The season ranking for the Truck Series look similar with that No. 11 crew up top and the No. 44 Niece Motorsports crew still holding strong in the second spot.

The No. 17 Tricon crew sees some close competition as the No. 9 CR7 Motorsports pit crew which is supplied by Richard Childress Racing continues their charge up the charts.

We got a chance to see POV of the fastest Truck Series pit stop of the year thanks to a post by No. 11 jackman Adam Lewis. This was a 12.4 second four tire change at Richmond Raceway.

In addition to the choreography changes, we will also see some development pit crew athletes and veterans get an opportunity to do Cup pit stops with the additional entries for drivers like Kevin Magnussen, Corey Heim, and Jimmie Johnson.

The fastest four tire stop of the day was set by the No. 9 pit crew of Grant Enfinger with a time of 13.20 seconds. The Tricon pit crew made also made appearances on that top 10 chart along with the No. 77 pit crew of Carson Hocevar and the No. 44 pit crew of Andres Perez De Lara.

That Richard Childress Racing pit crew was on a heater this weekend because they not only had the top spot in the Truck race but also took the top spot in the O’Reilly race with the No. 2 car of Jesse Love. That No. 2 crew is comprised of most of the same athletes as No. 9 truck crew other than Josh Thomas being swapped in as the front tire changer.

That No. 2 pit crew also had 2 of the fastest 5 pit stops in the race.

The No. 20 pit crew of Brandon Jones still leads the season rankings in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series but the No. 2 pit crew of Jesse Love continues to challenge them.

That No. 38 pit crew has been on the rise this year and I have ranked them around the top 10 all year so it wasn’t surprising to see them come out on top. They are employed by Joe Gibbs Racing and currently leased out to Front Row Motorsports.

NASCAR times the competition from timing to timing line which is why the times look different from the typical timing of a pit stop in a race. Here are those times ranked from fastest to slowest:

You can see just how much the driver entry and exit impacts the pit stop challenge time which is it’s important to have a driver that can handle pit lane well if you want to rank higher. The No. 38 pit crew was fast enough that it gave Zane Smith plenty of room not to rush but others were impacted by their drivers significantly.

It’s great to see the pit crews highlighted on their own broadcast but I would love to see the pit crew challenge separated from qualifying so that the broadcast follows the actual pit stop time instead of showing the overall qualifying time on the ticker. It would also be great to use the jack-to-jack time to make the times more uniform for what fans see the rest of the season.

My dream format would be to do something like what we see in IndyCar where you have a bracket format and two pit crews go head-to-head until they end up with a couple of finalists. I could imagine putting on a pit crew challenge at ZMax Dragway and using their 4 lanes to have 4 pit crews competing head-to-head until a winner is crowned.

The No. 2 pit crew has a lot of experienced pit crew athletes who also pit the No. 3 Cup car of Austin Dillon and the No. 9 truck of Grant Enfinger so they had a busy weekend but that didn’t impact their performance.

Consistency has been a huge factor for the success of that No. 44 pit crew and it can be seen on the median versus average chart where they stand out from the rest.

Other notables include the Tricon crew mentioned along with the No. 9 and No. 45 crews.

One important thing to keep in mind about Watkins Glen is that road course strategies can often impact pit stop time due to fueling time variations so we’ll likely see some changes in these rankings over the next couple of races.

The No. 23 pit crew of Bubba Wallace is starting to get back to their fast time from last year as they set a 8.02 second four tire change this week which timed them for the second fastest four tire pit stop ever completed in NASCAR. You can see the stop over on Bleacher Report.

The No. 43 pit crew of Erik Jones made their way into the top 3 on the pit stop averages chart this week and that was aided by their fastest ever pit stop which they completed in just 8.3 seconds.

Momentum from their win has allowed the No. 77 pit crew of Carson Hocevar to start making some moves and they have now cracked the top 20 in the rankings after being ranked as far back as 31st in Martinsville.

Other notable improvements can be seen from the No. 88 pit crew of Zilisch and the No. 48 pit crew of Alex Bowman as they both are on the the move towards the top 15.

We can see just how close the competition is at this point of the season when we look at the median versus average chart and see how the top 20 or so are basically in a pack.

Pit crews will have a new challenge this weekend as they head to Watkins Glen which requires pit stops in reverse direction and will mean that changers will swap ends of the car and everyone will have different cues. Pit stop times won’t be as critical as they were at Texas because fuel fill time will take center stage so it won’t be surprising to see averages in the 10 seconds range.

The No. 20 pit crew impressed on the individual pit stop time charts as well with their top stop of the day all the way in the low 12s. The No. 20 and No. 18 pit crew had 4 of the 5 fastest pit stops of the day.

The exemplary results continue to keep the No. 20 pit crew at the top of the charts but we’re seeing some shuffles below them as the No. 2 pit crew made their way into 3rd after Texas.

The No. 54 pit crew of Ty Gibbs also continues their dominant performance as they were less than a tenth of a second behind their teammates on the No. 20.

Top 13 Four Tire Averages at Kansas:

One notable entry on this list is the No. 12 pit crew of Ryan Blaney which has struggled in recent weeks but saw some changes ahead of Kansas. Rookie jackman Landon Honeycutt was moved over to the No. 21 of Josh Berry and swapped with veteran jackman Pat Gray. Unfortunately Pat hurt hurt his knee in practice and Graham Stoddard had to be pulled from the No. 4 of Noah Gragson and assigned to the No. 12 pit crew. This result in a shuffle in the jackman position of the other supported cars as well. The change seemed to positive for Blaney as Stoddard is a veteran leader on pit lane and can likely help get that crew back on the right path. I shared some of my thoughts on the initial swap on Dirty Mo Overdrive.

The No. 3 pit crew of Austin Dillon has also been affected by injury with front changer Josh Thomas out at Kansas with Dillon Caison in as the substitute. Caison has pitted the No. 33 Cup car and typically pits the No. 07 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and that No. 3 pit crew still ranked 16th for the day. Thomas is currently listed as returning at Talladega. Jesse Mills returns as tire carrier for the No. 2 pit crew of Austin Cindric after Zeke Nance subbed in at Kansas. That No. 2 crew has been as high as 10th on my rankings but currently sits 13th after a slower day at Kansas.

The consistency from the No. 20 pit crew was apparent at the top of the charts again but the surprising entry for one of the most consistent on pit lane was the No. 12 entry of Ryan Blaney.

The No. 17 RFK Racing pit crew of Chris Buescher had the fastest stop of the race and you can see the stop in full here on Bleacher Report Racing.

While that fast stop was impressive, the standout action for that pit crew happened on a busy exchange where Chris Buescher had to stop just before entering his pit stall. Jackman Nick Patterson recognized that there might be a penalty so he decided to reset back to the wall in order to avoid an “over the wall too soon” penalty.

We can see more evidence of the movement for the No. 12 pit crew as they made their way closer to the peak of median versus average chart.

Previewing Talladega

With the nature of racing at Talladega and the fact that pit stops often happen in OEM groups there really isn’t a pit stall that has stood out over the years. The analytics show that the second pit stall has the best average finish since the introduction of the current generation car but the rest aren’t too far away.

One interesting item I saw from the pit stall analytics is that even though the first pit stall is highly sought after it hasn’t really done well since 2022 as it is ranked 33rd on the list with an average finish of 23rd for the occupants of that pit stall.

The chart is mostly dominated by the usual suspects from JGR, RCR, and HMS but it is notable that the Haas Factory Team crew continue to make appearances in the top 10 considering how much smaller their pit department is compared to the others. The No. 54 pit crew of Taylor Gray were the only ones that were in the 12s alongside that No. 20 crew.

The Joe Gibbs Racing crews also dominated the individual fastest stops chart with 9 out of the 10 fastest pit stops coming out of that pit department with the No. 54 pit of Taylor Gray taking the top spot on the charts and beating their teammates on the No. 20 by just 0.08 seconds.

Completing one fast pit stop isn’t as hard as being consistent for an entire race and we can see who shined there based on how wide their line are in the chart below.

The improved performance from that No. 54 pit crew has allowed them to move into the top 3 for the season rankings making for a top 3 dominated by JGR pit crews. The sole JGR crew that isn’t in the top 10 is the No. 19 crew of Brent Crews that is in 11th.

We can see how there is now a distinct group of around 11 pit crew that have separated themselves from the rest of the field if we look at the median versus average charts. The No. 20 pit crew sits on its own island but the second group that consists of the No. 18, No. 54, and No. 2 isn’t far behind.

The JGR pit department has figured out how to put together a good mix of young athletes and veterans with Smith and Braxton having championship level experience while the rest have a lot of young motivation. Jackson Gibbs is a cousin of Ty Gibbs and works out with him frequently while McBeath is working his way back up to being one of the top tire carriers in the series after recovering from a back injury. Anderson is the most charismatic character on that pit crew who found his way into NASCAR after a conversation with Marty Smith during his time playing college football.

The top of the list was dominated by Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports pit crews with the Gibbs pit crew being the most notable at the top but it’s also significant to highlight the No. 77 pit crew of Carson Hocevar and the No. 47 pit crew of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. which Spire Motorsports and Hyak Motorsports lease from Hendrick Motorsports and are really getting their moneys worth.

Penske crews for Cindric, Logano, and Berry also showed up on the list but the crew of Ryan Blaney was missing as they ended up being ranked 31st for the day with a 9.95 second four tire average. I’ll be getting into some deeper analysis of that No. 12 pit crew later this week but there is a clear history and path forward that they can take here in order to improve.

JGR pit crews showed incredibly consistency with the No. 54 pit crew of Gibbs and the No. 11 pit crew of Hamlin being standouts.

The fastest pit stop of the race was completed by the No. 54 pit crew and you can watch that stop on Bleacher Report here.

The competition was so close at Bristol that the No. 54 pit crew beat the No. 9 pit crew by only a few hundredths of second for the best stop of the day.

It’s no surprise to see the No. 9 and No. 54 pit crews battling for the top spot because they are among those that lead the pack behind the standout No. 20 pit crew as seen on the average versus pit stop time chart below.

Previewing Kansas

Qualifying on the pole at Kansas will be significant because the first pit stall there has an average finish of 8.6 in the Gen 7 era. The only other pit stall with an average finish in the single digits is stall 38 which has an average finish of 9.9. Stall 24 and stall 8 are no far behind and have open outs much like stall 38. Stall 8 is also another with an open out while stall 37 is the highest ranked stall that has an opening coming in. Here is how the top 15 stalls look.

If we look at the historical pit stop time for each pit stall and map it against average finish we see that stalls with an opening out like pit stall 8 and 33 rank pretty highly so I expect those to be snapped up pretty early in the selection process.

The race winning No. 1 pit crew of Connor Zilisch is the only JRM pit crew that is provided by Trackhouse Racing and consists mostly of Cup pit crew members who pit for Zilisch on Sundays. This is likely to offer some positive momentum for that crew as they head into the race today.

Consistency is important and the top crews being able to adapt to changing conditions and challenges are starting to stand out. It was notable to see the No. 20 pit crew manage to gain a spot on pit lane at one point during the race while also making an adjustment to the car.

That No. 20 pit crew is so consistently quick that all 3 three of their four tire stops appeared in the list of the fastest individual pit stops.

It’s quickly apparent where the lines is drawn for the top pit crews compared to the rest when we look at the charts for how their pit stop times are spread out and it should be noted that the No. 2 RCR pit crew was so consistent that all of their pit stops are almost marked on top of one another.

The No. 18 pit crew made the largest leap in the full season rankings as they’ve now moved into the top 3. JGR pit crews now hold 3 of the top 5 spots. The No. 7 pit crew of Justin Allgaier has had the biggest improvement over the last few races as they were ranked 17th after Phoenix.

Outside of those two crews we saw some familiar team numbers on the top four tire stop including the top ranked No. 11 Tricon pit crew of Kaden Honeycutt.

This race saw some teams only competing a single four tire pit stop with how strategies played out so the list of average pit stop times looks pretty similar.

The race winning pit crew for the No. 62 of Christopher Bell ranked 13th on four tire average but they also had the fastest two tire stop of the race. That pit crew is provided by the Pit Crew Development Group (PDG) which is joint venture from 23XI Racing and Legacy Motor Club.

In the meantime, I have been working on some new charts to show how teams perform and have attached an example showing median pit stop time and pit stop distribution for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series so far.

It’s no surprise that the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing pit crew of Brandon Jones leads the charts once again but we now see just how consistent they are based on the distribution of their stops.

The median pit stop time is listed below each entry and it is also marked on the chart along with the average for each pit crew.

We can see just how much closer the competition is in the NASCAR Cup Series is with multiple teams having a median pit stop time that is within tenths of a second of each other.
