The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded with a singular, unambiguous mandate: to protect human health and safeguard the environment. Yet, under the Trump administration, the agency has increasingly functioned as a rubber stamp for corporate chemical giants.

The toxic herbicide trifludimoxazin, a highly potent “forever chemical” withdrawn from the market after environmental groups successfully sued the agency in 2022, has now been reapproved by the EPA for use on several foundational crops in the American diet.

Even as a new environmental lawsuit from a coalition of public interest advocates, including the Center for Food Safety, wends its way through the courts to block its use, trifludimoxazin is currently being sprayed on crops across the nation on corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, cereal grains, lentils, beans, peas, peanuts, and citrus fruits. This means it may well be in your morning cereal, orange juice, PBJ sandwich, and family dinner.

Scientifically known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), “forever chemicals” have virtually unbreakable carbon-fluorine bonds, so they never degrade and therefore accumulate in our soil, our water, and our bodies.

Once internalized, they are not easily metabolized or excreted, meaning they bioaccumulate over time and can trigger a wide range of chronic effects, including elevated risk of cancer, heart disease, liver toxicity, immune system suppression, and pregnancy complications.

Internal EPA assessments admit that trifludimoxazin displays “suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential.” Furthermore, the EPA’s own ecological reviews calculated that this single herbicide would likely cause harm to 884 endangered or threatened species and devastate 326 critical habitats, threatening vulnerable populations of Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, and Atlantic sturgeon.

How does a federal agency justify unleashing a known carcinogen that threatens hundreds of biological ecosystems? Profits.

Trifludimoxazin, produced by the German chemical giant BASF, is prohibited in the European Union, yet the EPA pushed it through while explicitly acknowledging the chemical’s catastrophic risks. It is now the fifth PFAS-based herbicide the agency has fast-tracked into commerce under the Trump administration.

While foreign corporations cannot donate directly to U.S. political campaigns, BASF exerts massive influence through its domestic corporate PACs and aggressive lobbying, using loopholes created by the 2010 Citizens United ruling.

Financial disclosures tracked by OpenSecrets demonstrate that manufacturing and chemical industry PACs have funneled millions into Donald Trump’s political apparatus and allied committees. This financial pipeline has successfully installed a revolving door of former chemical executives and industry lobbyists into key regulatory positions at the EPA and USDA.

Political power is temporary, but a “forever chemical” is permanent.

Long after this administration leaves Washington, its practice of putting corporate profits before public health means these toxic chemicals will course through our bloodstreams and remain in our organs, tissues, and bone marrow for the rest of our lives while massive profits continue to course through the pockets of corporate billionaires.

After George Washington died in 1799, an itinerant parson wrote a biography that portrayed the first president as a flawless moral role model for young Americans, creating the fable of chopping down the cherry tree as a moral lesson on honesty.

As the fable goes, six-year-old George Washington was given a hatchet on his sixth birthday and playfully chopped down his father’s prized English cherry tree. When his father discovered the damaged tree, he angrily demanded to know who did it. Young George bravely confesses, saying, “I cannot tell a lie, Pa; you know I can’t tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet.”

Instead of punishing him, the story goes, his father embraces him, saying his son’s honesty is worth more than a thousand cherry trees.

For more than two centuries, this story about the virtue of honesty has served as a foundational tool for moral education in American schools and homes. It appeared in grade school textbooks in the 19th century. Teachers used the story to link personal honesty with patriotism, suggesting that being a good American meant being truthful like the nation’s father. The tale was even regularly recited or performed in school plays every February to celebrate Washington’s birthday.

President Donald Trump is now personally spearheading an initiative to take over and expand the East Potomac Golf Links, adding 50 acres of public parkland to the course to build a luxury, championship-level venue capable of hosting PGA events.

In the process, Donald Trump is cutting down historic and beloved cherry trees. The golf course will also consume open land that is currently used for public picnics, fishing, open green spaces, and grasslands. The Riverside Bicycle Trail, a popular four-mile loop around the peninsula for cyclists, runners, and walkers, is omitted from the new course maps.

Opponents argue that converting open, free recreational space into restricted golf terrain violates the 1897 Congressional Act that legally established East Potomac Park strictly for the “recreation and pleasure of the people.” The removal of more than 60 trees has also sparked intense legal scrutiny because a federal judge previously instructed the government not to remove more than 10 trees from the property without giving the court advance notice.

Trump’s expansion will also demolish the property’s historic miniature golf course, wiping out a recent $1 million renovation. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest continuously operating mini-golf course in the United States, the 1931 landmark sits just off the National Mall.

Framed by iconic cherry blossoms, it has drawn millions of families and schoolchildren, many of whom likely recounted the George Washington cherry tree fable while putting their way around the course.

In 1941, it made national history when Black golfers staged a protest against its whites-only policy. In response, Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes desegregated the entire park, making it one of the very first public recreation spaces in the country to integrate during the Jim Crow era.

“I CANNOT TELL THE TRUTH”

Donald Trump refuses to acknowledge cutting down any historic cherry trees for his golf course overhaul at East Potomac Park; instead, his administration officially attributes the recent tree removals to “routine maintenance.”

From the tearing down of the East Wing of the White House to the debacle of making the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool “American flag blue,” Trump has a history of destroying public treasures without notifying or seeking authorization from Congress.

His playbook is always to lie and deflect, blame others, and then falsely declare total victory. For Donald Trump, it’s par for the course.

Roughly 50 million years ago, a dog-sized mammal called Eohippus (the dawn horse) lived in North American forests. Over millions of years, it evolved into Equus, the modern horse.

From North America, these ancient horses traveled across the Bering Land Bridge into Asia and Europe, regularly traveling back and forth and interbreeding as sea levels rose and fell. Then, more than 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, most of the North American horse population vanished.

Horses returned to North America by ship, carried by Spanish explorers and conquistadors beginning in the late 15th century. Some escaped their captivity and went wild again, stepping right back into the exact ecological niche their ancestors had occupied for millions of years.

Today, more than 60,000 wild mustang horses live on 25.5 million acres of federal public lands across 10 Western states managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. However, under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, the BLM is legally required to maintain a “thriving natural ecological balance” by periodically culling the herds.

Ecological balance sounds like great policy, but in reality, the government is keeping the herds small to protect public ranges for corporate livestock companies, whose millions of grazing cattle and sheep generate billions in annual revenue.

The “Slaughter Pipeline”

Private helicopters round up the wild horses, traumatizing them into a high-speed stampede and driving them for miles across rugged ground toward hidden corrals made of metal panels, with long wings of jute fabric extending outward from the corral entrance like a funnel.

As the panicked herd nears the mouth of the trap, handlers release a trained, domesticated horse that the wild horses instinctively follow directly into the camouflaged corral, and handlers quickly slam the gates shut behind them. That horse is actually called the “Judas” horse, named after the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot.

Once captured and branded, the healthier younger horses are put up for adoption. The older horses are funneled into the “sale authority” program, where they become highly vulnerable to the international slaughter pipeline.

While horse slaughterhouses have been banned within the United States since 2007, a little-known loophole makes it legal to export live horses across American borders for slaughter abroad. While the BLM vehemently maintains an official policy against selling horses for slaughter, government records and live inspection documents reviewed by investigators tracked a sharp increase in these sales under the Trump administration… all apparently done with a wink and a nod.

While it costs $3,000 to capture and process each horse, they are sold for as little as $25 apiece, yet fetch up to $750 at a slaughter plant. As the New York Times has just reported in an exclusive exposé, “While the bureau can’t kill wild horses, it can use a series of bureaucratic maneuvers and financial transactions to transform them on paper into domestic livestock, stripping their legal protections.”

Middlemen buy the horses, signing a contract with the BLM promising not to slaughter them, then immediately flip the horses to secondary middlemen, called “kill buyers,” who have never signed a contract with the federal government and use highly secretive methods to prevent animal welfare advocates or the public from tracking the horses. They then transport the horses across the border to Canada, where they are slaughtered for human consumption, with most of the meat shipped to Asia at great profit.

During President Trump’s first term, the BLM introduced an Incentive Adoption Program that paid individuals $1,000 to adopt a wild horse, which similarly resulted in a wave of people flipping the horses to “slaughter middlemen” for quick profits. Corporate ranchers and lobbying organizations representing public-lands livestock producers have given millions of dollars in campaign contributions to Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

The administration’s 2025-6 budget proposes slashing the Wild Horse and Burro Program’s funding by 25% (from $145 million down to $106 million) and explicitly requests that Congress remove long-standing prohibitions against using federal funds to kill healthy, “excess” horses or sell them directly to slaughterhouses. Thus far, Democrats in Congress have managed to maintain legislative language protecting horses from direct slaughter.

Project 2025, the conservative Heritage Foundation masterplan for Trump’s second term, proposes the euthanasia and uncapped sale of wild horses alongside a broader rollback of federal land protections to prioritize commercial industry over conservation. The blueprint also advocates for expanding corporate livestock grazing rights, unlocking public lands for resource extraction, stripping away regulatory barriers like environmental reviews, and potentially transferring federal land to state or private control.

America’s wild horses are living symbols of our national spirit. Their powerful presence stands as a testament to the vast, untamed wilderness that our country has long been committed to preserving for future generations.

Sending these majestic animals to slaughterhouses for corporate profit is a dark stain on our nation's moral fabric. When public land policies prioritize private ranching interests over federally protected wildlife, we compromise our ethics while treating an irreplaceable national treasure as little more than disposable waste.

American cattle ranchers long backed Donald Trump, but his promises to make America great again now ring hollow as his tariffs and trade wars threaten to destroy their livelihoods.

Trump’s actions have driven up equipment and feed costs, squeezing ranchers on thin margins as livestock prices plummet and foreclosures and bankruptcies rise.

Now, in a politically motivated push to brighten MAGA prospects for the midterms, Trump is trying to lower the price of hamburger meat for American consumers by suspending tariffs on imports of up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef that he says will be sold “at 25 percent below current prices.”

Major American cattle ranching associations have issued unified, sharp condemnations of the tariff waiver, calling the decision a “slap in the face” and a “shot in the gut” to domestic producers.

They also emphasize that importing hundreds of millions of pounds of ground beef from nations like Argentina or Brazil poses severe biological risks and forces strictly regulated American ranchers to compete against foreign operations that violate deforestation, forced labor, and disease-control protocols.

Then there’s the quality issue. Trump refuses to say where the 300,000 metric tons of ground beef is coming from, but market analysts and trade groups point directly to Argentina as a primary source. Trump calls its corrupt, authoritarian leader, Javier Milei, known for silencing political opponents, independent journalists, and public protesters, his “favorite president.”

30,000 pounds of Argentine beef were recently recalled after missing a required inspection in the U.S. Earlier this year, China rejected a 22-ton shipment of Argentine beef after testing detected traces of chloramphenicol, an antibiotic strictly banned in Argentine livestock production since 1995 because of severe human health risks.

Ground beef is inherently higher risk because meat from hundreds of different animals is blended together. A single carcass containing banned antibiotic residues, heavy metals, or growth stimulants can contaminate an entire commercial batch of hamburger meat.

The most critical long-term concern for the U.S. cattle industry is Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), a highly contagious viral illness that causes painful blisters on livestock and can force the mass slaughter of herds. The USDA does not recognize northern Argentina as entirely free of FMD, and the Trump administration’s own Agriculture Secretary, Brooke Rollins, has raised public alarms that Argentina’s baseline cattle health gaps pose lingering biosecurity complications.

Here’s My Take:

Donald Trump has used the presidency to generate some $2.4 billion in personal profits since returning to the White House for his second term.

He has made millions on high-frequency stock trades that coincide with positive presidential announcements about specific corporations, causing their stock prices to soar. His oil and gas holdings have skyrocketed, fueled by volatile energy markets tied to the Iran War. Trump has also profited from investments in private prison stocks that shot up after the U.S. government allocated $45 billion to build and maintain massive ICE detention centers across the nation.

It’s never been about making America great again; It’s always been about Donald Trump’s insatiable lust for wealth and power. However the mystery beef import works out, my bet is that, somehow, in some hidden way, Donald Trump will squeeze a profit out of the deal, and American cattle ranchers and consumers will ultimately pay the price.

More than 45,000 Canadians gave their lives fighting fascism in World War Two. They stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought in Italy and Sicily, battled the Japanese in the Pacific, liberated the Dutch from Nazi rule, fought the German army in Belgium and the Netherlands, and helped liberate Hitler’s concentration camps.

They fought in the Korean War, crossed the border to volunteer for the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, sent warships, fighter jets, and a field hospital to support the Persian Gulf War, and deployed over 40,000 personnel to Afghanistan following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, suffering the third-highest casualty rate among coalition nations that joined the conflict.

Over the weekend, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy appeared on Fox TV to defend Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada, stating:

“Canada gets the benefit of trading with the U.S. more—way more—than the U.S. gets the benefit of trading with Canada. It’s a country that doesn’t have a military. It has a country that has a single-payer healthcare system that’s failing... And so to think that they’re going to go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the U.S., I think it’s foolish on their part.”

This incredible gaffe, along with demeaning our longtime ally as foolish, came amid a worsening trade war between the United States and Canada, with Trump imposing a 50% tariff on Canadian goods and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announcing "dollar-for-dollar" retaliatory counter-tariffs.

Duffy, an ardent Christian Nationalist and former Fox host, just completed a “Great American Road Trip” reality television series with his wife and nine children. Filmed over seven months, its official goal was to encourage families to turn off their screens, hit the open road, and experience America’s shared civic history and natural beauty firsthand.

The trip was fully paid for by a nonprofit funded by major corporate sponsors, including Boeing, Toyota, Shell, United Airlines, and Waymo, all of which are directly regulated by or do business with Duffy’s Department of Transportation.

The series drew viral attention for a subplot in which one of Duffy’s daughters, Paloma, considered attending Harvard University. On camera, Duffy told her he would not allow it, arguing that Ivy League schools “indoctrinate” students with viewpoints that run counter to their family’s Christian values.

Harvard students, he argued, get “perverted and contorted,” and exposed to “woke ideology,” telling her, “If I send you there, I think what happens is they have professionalized figuring out how they can take good young girls like you, and I think corrupt their minds.”

Duffy may have forgotten, or never paid enough attention to know that Harvard’s perverted, contorted, and woke liberal graduates include Ted Cruz, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tom Cotton.

Duffy attended conservative Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona, Minnesota. A more liberal education might have deepened his understanding of history. He might even have learned that Canada has a military. It’s called the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), which includes the Canadian Army, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

He may also have learned that the United States and Canada share the world’s longest undefended border, which serves as the ultimate symbol of peace, absolute trust, and economic interdependence between two sovereign nations.

Spanning 5,525 miles, it demonstrates that global superpowers can coexist with smaller neighbors without military intimidation, without Trump’s threats to make it the 51st state, without disparaging its leaders, and without waging senseless trade wars.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese military launched a surprise air raid on Pearl Harbor.

When the USS West Virginia was hit by a series of torpedoes, a young man named Doris “Dorie” Miller was inside the hull on laundry duty. As an African American in a segregated military, Miller was barred from combat training and relegated to washing clothing and preparing food, yet he immediately ran topside to the deck.

Miller carried wounded sailors to safety through waist-deep water on the oil-slicked deck, even as Japanese aerial torpedoes left his ship listing and taking on water under a sky swarming with enemy planes.

He then manned a .50-caliber anti-aircraft gun, and without any prior instruction, fired at invading Japanese warplanes until his ammunition ran out.

Miller’s heroism that day earned him the Navy Cross

Some eighty years later, on January 20, 2020, the naming of a future Gerald R. Ford–class aircraft carrier (CVN-81) as the USS Doris Miller was announced at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremony at Pearl Harbor, marking the first time in U.S. history that a supercarrier was named after an African American and an enlisted sailor.

Yet, reports have now surfaced that the Navy is actively discussing stripping Doris Miller’s name from the multi-billion-dollar warship. The proposed replacement? A five-time draft dodger with a history of disparaging those who served: President Donald Trump.

This isn’t just an unprecedented, self-aggrandizing pivot to name an active supercarrier after a sitting commander-in-chief. It is a calculated, deeply symbolic erasure that acts as the perfect microcosm of the Trump administration’s ongoing assault against people of color within the United States armed forces.

It aligns precisely with a sweeping, ideological campaign spearheaded by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to systematically purge minority and female leadership from the Pentagon. Under the guise of a war against “wokeism” and a crusade against “diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hires,” Hegseth has overseen an aggressive restructuring of the military brass.

Since taking office, Hegseth has forced out or abruptly retired dozens of senior military leaders with impeccable reputations, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General C.Q. Brown and Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. General George was reportedly ousted in part because he refused to follow Hegseth’s directives to remove highly qualified Black and female officers from promotion lists.

A majority of the top commanders forced out under Hegseth’s watch have been Black or female. He has personally intervened to veto or block dozens of senior promotions for women and minorities, including striking Black male and female captains from lists destined for one-star admiral ranks. The result has been the lowest percentage of diverse military advancement nominations in this century by an administration that values partisan and racial conformity over actual merit and uniform readiness.

Doris “Dorie” Miller, the son of sharecroppers, was born in Waco, Texas, on October 12, 1919. At 6 feet 3 inches tall and over 200 pounds, he became a star fullback for his high school football team, earning the nickname “The Raging Bull” from his coaches and teammates for his physical power.

Miller enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was just 22 years old when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor. He was killed in action in 1943 at age 24. In addition to the Navy Cross, Miller received the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal – Fleet Clasp, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Here’s My Take:

When Hegseth and the administration target these leaders, they dismiss their decades of unblemished service and send a deeply prejudiced message: women and people of color do not belong at the highest levels of American defense.

Stripping Doris Miller’s name from CVN-81 is the cultural crown jewel of this purge. Miller represents the ultimate counter-narrative to the administration’s ideology. He proved that even when an institution deliberately suppresses a person due to their race, they cannot erase their heroism and patriotism.

True military readiness is built on the reality that heroism knows no race, rank, or background. When Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly originally announced the ship’s name in 2020, he declared that the selection was meant to recognize generations of enlisted sailors of every background who make the Navy great.

The Pentagon’s quiet attempts to appease the White House by downgrading Miller’s name to a lesser vessel, while dangling a long-delayed Medal of Honor as a consolation prize, fool no one. It is a classic bureaucratic bait-and-switch designed to soften the blow of a blatant insult to Black veterans and active-duty service members.

Replacing the name of this true war hero who gave his life for this country with the name of a sitting president who avoided service would also be a profound degradation of the “warrior ethos” that Pete Hegseth claims to defend.

If the administration succeeds in erasing Doris Miller from the hull of our nation’s most powerful warships, it will send a chilling signal that the modern Pentagon values political loyalty and racial exclusion far more than actual heroism and sacrifice.

The “Smoking Gun” that toppled a corrupt President

In 1974, secret White House audio tapes revealed that, despite repeated denials, President Richard Nixon had ordered the cover-up of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Building in Washington, DC.

Up until this startling revelation, Nixon and his administration repeatedly denounced journalists covering the Watergate Scandal as biased, hostile, and part of a communist conspiracy. During Congressional hearings into the Watergate Scandal, Republicans sought to undo the probe by endlessly demanding, “Where’s the smoking gun?”

Now the smoking gun was right there on the table, proving that Nixon had not only orchestrated a massive, illegal cover-up from the Oval Office, but he had also used the CIA to block the FBI investigation, paid hush money to the burglars, and lied to the American public about it.

Four days later, on August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace to escape certain impeachment.

Now, the campaign to “Make Nixon Great Again” is underway, led by Vice President JD Vance and convicted felon Roger Stone, a junior scheduler for Nixon’s 1972 re-election campaign who sports a large tattoo of Nixon’s smiling face on his back, became a Trump political advisor and key strategist behind the January 6 Insurrection.

The makeover attempt is not driven by the uncovering of new archival material that paints a different portrait of the man. Instead, it is an audacious strategy to reframe Nixon from a cruel and corrupt president who repeatedly broke the law and subverted democracy into a populist martyr who was unfairly maligned by the press and then destroyed by the alleged “Deep State.”

During an appearance at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum last month, Vice President Vance gushed, “I always liked Richard Nixon.” He then praised Nixon as a political genius, called the idea that the Watergate Scandal took down a presidency “crazy,” and argued that the 37th president’s historical legacy is experiencing a well-deserved renaissance.

Then, with a little smile and self-serving twinkle in his eye, Vance added, “You know, young senator, Vice President, writes some bestselling books, is hated by the media — it kind of sounds like JD Vance.”

Despite the Vice President’s attempts to downplay the scandal, Watergate remains one of the most egregious abuses of presidential power in U.S. history. Far from an isolated event, it was a symptom of a much deeper disease that now also infects the current administration.

Throughout his time in office, Nixon conducted secret warfare, political sabotage, and aggressive domestic policies that severely damaged both American democracy and global stability.

He sabotaged international peace talks for campaign advantage. He illegally ordered the IRS to audit his enemies list and used the CIA to obstruct justice. He smeared his enemies as communists and ordered the Justice Department to investigate them. When his underhanded actions were exposed, he plunged the nation into a constitutional crisis by firing the independent prosecutors investigating him.

Here’s My Take

By attempting to excuse and normalize Nixon’s worst abuses of power, Trump’s acolytes are seeking to retroactively legalize executive overreach, signaling that they view the rule of law not as a sacred constitutional boundary, but as an annoying obstacle to be dismantled.

The goal is to condition the public to view any form of institutional oversight, whether from federal prosecutors, independent courts, congressional committees, or the free press, as nothing more than a partisan witch hunt by deep state subversives, commies, and radical leftists.

If the Watergate cover-up was just a minor media distraction, then modern attempts to obstruct justice or ignore subpoenas can be dismissed as standard political combat, and any modern president can wield the Department of Justice as a cudgel against political rivals with impunity.

The ongoing effort to resurrect and cleanse Richard Nixon’s reputation is not a harmless debate over 20th-century history. It is the latest chapter warning of a dark, authoritarian future where accountability is crushed and absolute power prevails over the land.

On March 25, 1911, a young woman named Frances Perkins stood in Washington Square and watched in horror as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory burned. Trapped behind locked exit doors, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, leaped to their deaths or perished in the flames.

For Frances Perkins, this was not just an unavoidable tragedy. It was a burning exposé of the brutal reality of unregulated capitalism, where profits eclipsed human lives.

At the time of the blaze, Perkins was Executive Secretary of the New York Consumers League, which lobbied the state government for better working conditions, shorter hours, and a 54-hour workweek limit for women and children.

Because of her advocacy, the Governor of New York appointed her chief investigator for the Factory Investigating Commission created to look into the fire. Factory owners and Republican lawmakers immediately decried the investigation as an invasion of the private sector and an unconstitutional threat to capitalism and the free market. They argued that the Triangle Fire was an isolated tragedy and that new safety mandates would destroy jobs and drive factories out of New York State into states with cheaper, unregulated labor markets.

But Frances Perkins fought back, working with labor unions to organize massive public rallies to defend the proposed new safety codes, which included fire escapes, alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and evacuation drills. In the end, 36 landmark safety laws became law, completely reshaping American workplace safety forever.

Decades later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Frances Perkins Secretary of Labor, making her the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. She held the post from 1933 to 1945, making her the longest-serving Labor Secretary in history. Through sheer determination, she turned the Department of Labor from a weak, impotent agency into a powerhouse for social justice.

Perkins became the quiet architect behind the New Deal's most lasting reforms. She championed the Social Security Act of 1935, which created a safety net for the elderly, disabled, and unemployed. She drove the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which finally banned child labor, established a nationwide minimum wage, and limited the standard workweek to 40 hours. She also pushed for workplace safety laws, federal unemployment insurance, and massive public works programs to get citizens back to work during the Great Depression.

Corporate groups, conservative newspapers, and Republican politicians denounced her as a radical, a communist, and a socialist. They argued that her social policies would destroy free enterprise and replace capitalism with a Soviet-style dictatorship. Most of all, they were outraged that a woman was in charge and questioned her right to lead men.

The hostility climaxed in 1939. Right-wing lawmakers launched a bitter impeachment inquiry against her. They accused her of being soft on communism because she refused to deport Harry Bridges, a radical labor union leader. Perkins defended herself with calm, razor-sharp legal logic. She proved she was following the constitutional rule of law, not shielding subversives.

The impeachment effort failed, but it highlighted the deep vitriol she endured to prove that government could be an ally to the ordinary citizen and protect American workers.

Today, the battles Frances Perkins fought are being waged once again. President Trump and the GOP routinely denounce opponents of the administration’s policies as radical commies, un-American subversives, and domestic terrorists.

Under Trump, workplace safety protections and environmental standards are being aggressively rolled back, and the federal regulatory agencies designed to shield regular citizens from corporate overreach are being systematically dismantled.

This modern crusade exposes a permanent truth in American politics: the fierce struggle between unchecked corporate profit and basic human dignity never truly ends, and the go-to label to trigger knee-jerk panic against those who fight for justice and equality remains the “commie bugaboo.”

The factory owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, were never held criminally liable or faced jail time for the fire and the deaths.

In 1913, just two years after the disaster, inspectors caught Max Blanck locking the exit doors during working hours at another garment factory he owned. They issued him a simple warning and fined him $20.

The following year, in March 1914, Blanck and Harris settled 23 individual civil lawsuits brought by the victims' families in the Triangle Fire, paying just $75 per life lost.

Following this settlement, the factory’s insurance company paid Blanck and Harris roughly $400 per dead worker to cover their property losses. This meant the owners actually profited from the tragedy, making about $325 extra per victim.

Electric shock is the operational logic of “clean” violence, allowing the state to inflict severe pain while leaving no forensic trail for human rights lawyers, inspectors, or journalists.

Totalitarian secret police forces like the Soviet NKVD and the East German Stasi understood that visible wounds fueled public outrage and damaged the state’s international image, so they beat their subjects with rubber-coated instruments to avoid leaving bruises or scars.

Under the Apartheid regime, the South African Security Branch used hand-held shock batons to subjugate and interrogate Black anti-apartheid activists because they provided immediate, agonizing pain to instantly force compliance while minimizing the physical evidence.

During the Civil Rights Movement, southern police turned electric cattle prods on peaceful demonstrators to break up protests and inflict intense pain, again without leaving visible marks. The lack of physical evidence of their brutality gave them plausible deniability; the ability to minimize public outrage by avoiding the graphic, blood-stained images that usually galvanized national support for the movement.

Now ICE is in the game, announcing plans to spend $20 million to equip ICE agents with heavy-duty leather patrol gloves that deliver high-voltage, painful, and debilitating electric shocks; a chilling shift toward a form of compliance policing deeply rooted in the historical tactics of authoritarian states.

It’s called the “G.L.O.V.E.”, an acronym for a “Generated Low-Output Voltage Emitter.” A key feature of the glove is not just the pain it inflicts, but how it also conceals that damage. Traditional weapons, like firearms or projectile tasers, are loud, highly visible, and leave an unmistakable trail of evidence. They project prongs, draw blood, or leave entry wounds. The G.L.O.V.E., by contrast, requires only an agent’s touch on the victim’s body, giving it the insidious dynamic of camouflage.

Onlookers cannot see or hear the glove deliver a debilitating shock. On a smartphone camera or to a bystander across the street, an agent appears to be simply placing a hand on a protester or detainee’s shoulder or arm, while in reality, that agent could be administering an agonizing electrical current to force compliance. This transforms a violent assault into an act that appears benign and peaceful.

As if it’s a humanitarian breakthrough, the manufacturer explicitly boasts that the device leaves “no burns, marks or scars.” This is far from a compassionate innovation. Instead, it is a calculated effort to bypass accountability by making the infliction of severe pain imperceptible.

Americans oppose ICE tactics by a 2-1 margin, and a majority continue to demand an end to its occupations of American cities. Since 2025, up to 60 people have died in ICE custody. Its agents have committed eleven fatal public shootings during public protests and arrests, including the killing of American citizens Renee Nicole Good, Alex Pretti, and Ruben Ray Martinez.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has systematically blamed the victims, refused to allow outside investigations, and declined to release evidence until legal battles forced the release of long-withheld evidence to local prosecutors.

Here’s My Take

When we give state agents who hide behind masks a tool that inflicts terrible pain, conceals that pain from the public eye, and leaves no physical marks on the victim, we echo the dark history of totalitarianism and police states while simultaneously stripping away our national humanity.

Such a weapon is fundamentally incompatible with a constitutional democracy built on the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, due process, and absolute accountability.

If we allow state violence to become completely invisible, we lose the ability to police the state itself, and the ongoing shock to democracy becomes painfully existential.

After dissembling, denying, and deflecting the serious concerns of military families over conditions for 5,000 troops aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for more than 250 days, the Pentagon is now reversing course and sending in the USS George Washington to relieve the ship.

This is the situation aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln: military families are raising urgent concerns about sailors’ mental health, multiple sailors are reported by families and military outlets to have attempted to go overboard, and roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines are enduring a deployment now in its ninth month.

This isn’t just one outlet’s reporting. Navy Times has reported allegations of multiple overboard attempts during the extended deployment. Stars and Stripes covered an emotional town hall where families confronted Navy leadership over mental health and self-harm concerns. The Guardian later reported on both, and Snopes reviewed earlier reporting on food shortages and deteriorating conditions aboard the ship.

The Navy has not released a precise number of alleged self-harm or overboard incidents. It says the carrier has counselors, chaplains, and medical staff available and that leadership is monitoring sailors’ psychological readiness. That official response must be noted—but so must the families’ accounts.

At the town hall, attended by about 200 relatives, families described growing fear over the impact of the prolonged deployment. Stars and Stripes reported that concerns about mental health and self-harm were directly raised with Navy leaders. One spouse said her husband texted that he hoped he would not wake up the next day. Navy Times reported that Annabelle Loma said her husband attempted to jump overboard after repeated extensions of his deployment. Another sailor’s wife described an incident in which her husband stopped a fellow sailor from going over the side.

WHEN SAILORS ARE REPORTEDLY TRYING TO GO OVER THE SIDE OF A CARRIER, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG.

The Lincoln has now spent roughly 250 consecutive days at sea in a deployment repeatedly extended due to combat operations tied to the war with Iran. Sailors and families have also reported poor living conditions, including broken sanitation systems, limited laundry access, intermittent hot water, and inadequate food and hygiene supplies.

The Navy disputes this picture, saying sailors currently have access to clean water, functioning air conditioning, and adequate food, and that it has not seen an increase in reported suicidal ideation or attempts. That difference in accounts is significant.

What makes Pete Hegseth’s response so troubling is what came earlier. When reports surfaced about food shortages and poor conditions aboard the Lincoln, Hegseth dismissed them as “fake news.” Snopes confirmed he used that characterization regarding those earlier reports.

To be clear, he was not referring to later reporting on alleged suicide attempts. But the issue is the pattern: when credible concerns about sailors’ living conditions emerged, the response from the top of the Pentagon was dismissal, not urgency or investigation.

That is unacceptable from the Secretary of Defense.

These sailors operate one of the most complex warships in the world, in a combat environment, far from home. They work long hours maintaining aircraft, weapons systems, and nuclear-powered machinery under constant operational pressure. They should not be fighting for basic living conditions, nor should their families be forced to plead for attention while leadership dismisses concerns as “fake news.”

SUPPORTING THE TROOPS IS NOT A SLOGAN.

It means proper food, functioning sanitation, adequate rest, accessible mental health care, and—above all—listening when sailors and families raise alarms.

Rep. Mike Levin has said sailors should at minimum have hot water, working toilets, and adequate food. Rep. Jason Crow, an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, has warned that strain on the Lincoln’s crew is mounting.

Leadership is not rhetoric about toughness. It is responsibility. It is accountability before crisis. And it is taking reports like these seriously instead of dismissing them.

When military outlets report that sailors may be attempting to go overboard, the response from the Pentagon should be urgency and transparency—not deflection.

The nickname “Seven Sisters” was coined by Enrico Mattei, the head of Italy’s state-owned oil company, ENI, in the 1950s, to characterize the post-WWII global oil cartel that colluded to fix prices, limit global oil supplies, and crush any outside competition.

In Greek mythology, they were called the Pleiades, seven sister-goddesses who moved across the sky as a single cluster, completely unreachable by mortals. Mattei used this metaphor to mock and demean the oil giants, who were tightly bound by secret agreements, acted as a single unit to control the global energy market, and were completely untouchable by regular laws or smaller nations.

These omnipotent oil companies, including the ancestors of today’s ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and British Petroleum (BP), did not just drill for crude oil. They rewrote the rules of global politics for more than a century. In their relentless pursuit of wealth and power, they overthrew sovereign governments, forced millions of people into systemic poverty, and poisoned the natural environment with toxic waste.

Human rights and democracy were simply threats to the bottom line that had to be quickly eliminated. When democratic nations tried to control their own natural resources, the Seven Sisters coopted governments and used Western intelligence agencies as their personal enforcement squads. Anyone who championed the welfare of the people was falsely accused of being a communist and condemned as an enemy of the public good. Those who persisted faced incarceration and even assassination.

When Iran’s Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh democratically nationalized Iranian oil in 1953 to help his citizens, the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, now BP, orchestrated a coup with the CIA and MI6. They fomented a staged revolution, tore down a democracy, and installed a brutal dictator, the Shah, to maintain their control of Iran’s massive oil industry.

In Nigeria, the Ogoni Nine were environmental and human rights activists from the Ogoniland region whose group led non-violent protests against the massive oil pollution and environmental destruction caused by the oil giant Shell (then Royal Dutch Shell) in the Niger Delta. Shell provided salaries, monetary bonuses, and logistical transport to security forces within the Nigerian military government to crack down on the protesters, and demanded that it intervene and “deal with” community protests.

The Ongoni Nine were arrested on trumped-up charges, tortured, and executed on November 10, 1995. To prevent their graves from becoming a memorial site for protestors, the military put the bodies into an unmarked mass grave and poured acid over them to fast-track decomposition.

This corporate greed and political complicity has been dubbed the “resource curse,” a reality in which countries with abundant natural resources, such as oil, gas, or minerals, tend to have lower economic growth, less democracy, and worse development than countries with fewer resources. It is not some accident of nature; it is a business model.

In the Ecuadorian Amazon between 1964 and 1992, decades of Texaco’s oil spills turned fertile lands and clean rivers into toxic waste zones. The soil was ruined, fishing communities lost their livelihoods, and local people suffered from high rates of cancer and respiratory illnesses as the industry dumped all the environmental costs onto the public while pocketing all the profits.

It was one of the worst environmental disasters on Earth, often called the “Amazon Chernobyl.”

From Angola to Venezuela, Nigeria to Iran, Guinea to Gabon, oil money enriched a small group of corrupt elites and corrupted governments as it simultaneously produced massive poverty and pollution. The corporations took their staggering profits back to Western capitals, leaving local economies hollowed out, with the average citizen lacking clean water, basic healthcare, and proper schools.

All along, the oil companies knew about the environmental dangers of fossil fuels. Yet, they hid the science and spent millions of dollars on public relations to deny climate change while, on the ground, their operations ruined entire ecosystems.

The old Seven Sisters, Exxon, Mobil, Chevron, Texaco, Gulf Oil, Shell, and BP, didn’t disappear; they ate each other. Driven by market pressures and the need to pool resources, a wave of mega-mergers in the late 1990s and 2000s shrank the group, yet today’s oil giants still put billions in quarterly profits above the survival of the planet.

They relentlessly lobby against renewable energy, receive massive government subsidies while rewriting laws to avoid paying for their pollution, and continue to funnel money into campaign coffers and puppet governments whose leaders will readily do their bidding.

It’s no surprise that during his 2024 presidential run, Donald Trump hosted top oil executives at his Mar-a-Lago Club, reportedly asking them to raise $1 billion for his campaign while promising policy changes that would yield multibillion-dollar windfalls for the industry.

The abduction of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces last January has directly helped Western oil companies by unlocking access to the world’s largest oil reserves.

Trump’s war against Iran, launched in February, has sent energy prices skyrocketing, triggering massive profit windfalls for Big Oil.

Trump’s ongoing threats against the sovereignty of Greenland have just been proven to be connected to a Texas-based fossil fuel company named “Greenland Energy,” in which major billionaire Trump donors quietly hold large blocks of shares.

“Greenland Energy” plans to exploit a pristine Arctic basin rumored to contain up to $1 trillion in crude oil. Last week, the company deployed drilling equipment to the shores of Greenland despite lacking permits and facing heavy opposition from government officials.

Enrico Mattei’s active defiance of the Seven Sisters, such as offering Middle Eastern and African nations much better 75% profit-sharing deals, ultimately made him a marked man.

In 1962, he died in a highly suspicious plane crash, which later Italian judicial investigations concluded was an assassination carried out via a sabotage bomb.

Following a high-stakes visit on May 21 by Donald Trump’s hand-picked Greenland Envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the United States relocated its diplomatic mission to a much larger, permanent U.S. Consulate building in the capital city of Nuuk.

This aggressive footprint triggered immediate local backlash. Hundreds of Greenlanders took to the streets of the capital, carrying the island’s flag and chanting “Greenland is not for sale” and “No means no” to protest the expanding American presence.

Simultaneously, Trump stoked international tensions by posting an AI-generated meme on Truth Social of his giant face looming ominously over a Greenlandic village, with the caption “Hello, Greenland!”

While the White House frames its obsession with Greenland through the lens of Arctic national security against Russia and China, an aggressive corporate apparatus has been operating behind the scenes. Despite Greenland’s historic 2021 official ban on all new oil exploration licenses, a Texas-based fossil fuel company named Greenland Energy has actively laid groundwork to exploit a pristine Arctic basin rumored to contain up to one trillion dollars in crude oil.

The company’s chairman and major shareholder, financier Larry Swets Jr., maintains direct access to Trump’s inner circle, and major billionaire Trump donors quietly hold large blocks of shares in the company. In a brazen escalation last week, an unauthorized tugboat and barge bypassed regulatory frameworks to unload heavy drilling equipment and specialized containers along Greenland’s remote eastern coast. This was not a mistake. It was a corporate beachhead.

The government of Greenland immediately issued a strong warning and a sharp public rebuke, reprimanding the Trump-aligned firm for carrying out unauthorized machinery movements on sovereign territory.

MILITARY AND ECONOMIC COERCION

This heavy-handed Arctic posture mirrors a broader shift toward transactional, resource-driven foreign policy. Following the U.S. military operation in early January 2026 to abduct Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the White House openly confirmed that military and economic mechanisms were on the table regarding Greenland. Trump has explicitly refused to rule out the use of force, threatening European allies with devastating twenty-five percent import tariffs if Denmark refuses to cede the autonomous territory.

Eric Hoffer claimed he was born to working-class, immigrant parents in the Bronx in 1902. Or so the story goes.

The exact details of his youth have always been murky and impossible to verify. Biographers now suspect that his entire early-life narrative was a myth. Hoffer may well have been born in Germany, arriving in America later in life and concocting his Bronx childhood to conceal a lack of legal residency as World War II approached, which likely would have resulted in detention and internment.

According to his own lore, he was not yet five years old when his mother, Elsa, fell down a flight of stairs while carrying him. She died from her injuries two years later. Shortly after, seven-year-old Eric mysteriously went blind, spending his childhood isolated at home, raised by an abusive father who openly dismissed him as an “idiot child.”

At age 15, Hoffer’s vision returned as inexplicably as it had vanished. Terrified that it wouldn’t last, Hoffer read everything he could find in both German and English.

When his father died a few years later, Hoffer headed west to California, landing on Los Angeles’s notorious Skid Row. For the next decade, he lived in cheap flophouses, worked manual labor, and read intensely at the Los Angeles Central Library. He left Skid Row during the Great Depression to become a migrant farm worker, hop freight trains, and pan for gold, all while furiously scribbling notes on human nature.

During this time, Hoffer wrote an unpublished novel and numerous essays heavily focused on human behavior, psychology, and the constant struggle against apathy and despair.

In 1943, Hoffer moved to San Francisco and became a longshoreman on the city’s waterfront. For nearly a quarter of a century, he treated the docks as a living laboratory, seeking to understand how people become radicalized, join mass movements, and trade their personal freedom for the comfort of a crowd.

Hoffer concluded that when people lose faith in themselves, they look for a way to dissolve their individuality into something bigger, be it a political party, a religion, or a revolution. By joining a mass movement, they no longer bear the burden of their own choices or failures; the collective group thinks, speaks, and acts for them.

He wrote his masterpiece, The True Believer, while still actively loading cargo ships. The intellectual world was stunned that a self-educated dockworker wrote a profound psychological analysis of fascism, communism, and cultish groupthink. The book catapulted him to national fame, earning him the nickname “The Longshoreman Philosopher.”

Arguing that “passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life,” he held that true believers are not idealists seeking to build a better world, but frustrated individuals desperate to escape an unwanted self. By sinking themselves into mass extremist political, religious, or social movements, Hoffer argued, these insecure souls exchange their flawed, fragile autonomy for the illusion of holy, immutable power.

Hoffer criticized both sides of the political spectrum, noting the far left dreams of a future utopia, while the far right dreams of a golden past, but both use these illusions as an excuse to burn down the present and eliminate individual freedom. The movement, the tribe, the cult provides validation, belonging, and a sense of superiority, especially when it is solidified by a common enemy, a focal point for their fear, loathing, and hatred.

Today, as the United States grapples with the MAGA movement merged with Christian Nationalism, White Supremacy, and American fascism, Hoffer’s insights offer a powerful explanation for the chaos. We are not witnessing a standard political debate or new social movement; we are witnessing a mass outbreak of the True Believer Syndrome, a psychological refuge for the frustrated, the disaffected, and the spiritually displaced being exploited by political manipulators.

MAGA does not function as a traditional political coalition bound by pragmatic legislative goals; it operates as a secular religion of self-renunciation. Donald Trump does not demand policy coherence; he demands absolute, faithful submission. In return, he offers his followers a powerful transaction: in exchange for their individuality, they receive a grand narrative where their personal grievances are elevated into a historic, glorified battle for the soul of the nation. The true believer no longer faces their own inadequacies; they are cast as heroic defenders of a lost golden age, vindicated by a powerful leader who promises to break the system on their behalf.

MAGA’s Christian Nationalism strips the gospel of its compassion, humility, and loving kindness while twisting scripture to argue that intolerance, violence, and hatred are what an angry God ordains. It thus weaponizes faith to provide the ultimate moral absolution for the fanatic. By framing policy disagreements as literal demonic warfare, the true believer’s desperate need for an enemy is fulfilled. Hatred becomes a unifying sacrament. To loathe the immigrant, the secularist, or the institutionalist becomes a holy duty and proof of devotion to the collective tribe.

This synthesis of political grievance and religious absolutism is the classic breeding ground for American fascism. It thrives by cultivating a boundless faith in a miraculous future while fiercely rejecting present-day facts, science, and democratic norms. The true believer is immune to evidence because their belief system is built on an emotional necessity to be a warrior for a righteous cause. To abandon this myth would require abandoning their grandiose identity and returning to the agonizing reality of their own isolated, frustrated self.

America’s current crisis cannot be solved by simple fact-checking or standard political compromise. You cannot reason someone out of a bunker they entered to save their soul. To counter this rising tide, the nation must address the root systemic frustrations, economic alienation, social isolation, and loss of purpose that make self-renunciation seem like salvation.

Until we rebuild a society that offers individuals dignity and hope within their own lives, the siren song of the mass movement will continue to find willing ears, and the true believer will continue to march into battle.

Eric Hoffer eventually received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan in 1983, the same year he passed away. Even after achieving international fame, television specials, and a teaching position at UC Berkeley, he refused to leave his dock job until forced into retirement at age 65.

As Hoffer famously observed: “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.”

The political sickness consuming the United States did not begin with Donald Trump. Trump intensified it, vulgarized it, and organized much of his movement around grievance, enemies, humiliation, and revenge. But the architecture was already in place.

One of the most consequential accelerants was Newt Gingrich and the political culture that developed around him. Gingrich did not invent negative campaigning or partisan warfare, but he helped institutionalize a style of politics in which opponents were increasingly portrayed not simply as wrong, but as dangerous, corrupt, and illegitimate.

The evidence is unusually explicit. In 1990, GOPAC—the Republican political organization Gingrich led—distributed a document titled Language: A Key Mechanism of Control. According to a cover letter signed by Gingrich, the document was drafted by GOPAC political director Tom Morgan, and the words in it grew out of focus-group testing of political ideas and language. Gingrich wrote that he hoped the material would prove useful in speeches and other campaign communications.

The memo itself could hardly be clearer about its purpose. It tells candidates that “language matters,” urges them to memorize its words and phrases, and divides them into two categories. “Optimistic Positive Governing Words” included truth, courage, prosperity, family, liberty, freedom, and strength. “Contrasting Words” were specifically intended to help candidates define their opponents, their records, their proposals, and the Democratic Party. That list included decay, failure, destructive, sick, pathetic, traitors, radical, corruption, incompetent, greed, anti-family, and disgrace.

Claim the language of virtue for yourself. Attach the language of danger and decay to your opponent.

That strategy matters because it changes the nature of politics. A disagreement over taxation, labor, health care, immigration, or regulation can be a contest between competing philosophies of government. But once the opposition is routinely portrayed as corrupt, destructive, traitorous, or fundamentally anti-American, compromise begins to look like collaboration with something dangerous.

Politics then becomes less about persuading fellow citizens and more about convincing them that the other side is unworthy of trust.

This is also where what I call the stupidification of America enters the story. By stupidification, I do not mean that Americans are inherently stupid. I mean the erosion of critical thinking through a political culture that substitutes emotionally charged labels, repetition, slogans, and tribal cues for analysis.

Instead of asking citizens to examine a policy, weigh evidence, understand tradeoffs, or consider what an opponent actually believes, this style of politics offers a shortcut: attach a frightening word and let the label do the thinking.

Terms such as communist, Marxist, traitor, radical, and enemy can become substitutes for argument. A critical thinker hears the word socialist and asks: Which policy? What does it actually do? Is the comparison historically accurate? What are the alternatives? A person conditioned by political stupidification hears the label and treats it as the conclusion.

If the label is powerful enough, you no longer have to win the argument.

The method works best when emotional reaction outruns careful reasoning—when people stop asking whether the accusation is accurate and simply absorb the association.

Gingrich was not solely responsible for American polarization. The country had already experienced ideological realignment, racial conflict, economic upheaval, cultural change, and bitter partisan battles. But he was an important accelerant in a Republican political style that rewarded confrontation and the systematic delegitimization of Democrats.

Rush Limbaugh then carried that culture into millions of American homes. His nationally syndicated radio program became one of the most influential forces in conservative media, turning partisan combat into daily entertainment through mockery, provocation, and ridicule. He did not merely criticize liberal policies; he helped make contempt for liberals part of the performance.

Fox News later became the dominant television news source for much of the Republican electorate and an enormously powerful force within the broader conservative media ecosystem. The vocabulary hardened further. Democratic politicians and policies were increasingly characterized as socialist, Marxist, communist, radical, anti-American, or destructive.

The particular accusations changed, but the method remained recognizable: reduce complexity, attach a frightening label, repeat it often enough, and allow emotion to replace examination.

Stupidification works when a word triggers fear before the mind asks whether the word is true.

By the time Donald Trump became the dominant figure in Republican politics, he did not have to invent this vocabulary. He inherited a movement and political culture that had spent decades cultivating it, and then he pushed it further.

Trump has repeatedly described opponents as Marxists and communists, portrayed domestic adversaries as enemies, and used similarly apocalyptic language about immigration and political opposition. His particular political talent has been simplification: complicated problems become slogans, entire groups become nicknames, and policy disagreements become accusations.

That style of politics asks very little of citizens except emotional allegiance. It requires reaction far more than understanding.

A functioning democracy requires citizens capable of distinguishing evidence from propaganda, argument from insult, policy from personality, and fact from repetition. When political movements reward the opposite habits, democratic culture weakens.

If Democrats are communists trying to destroy America, why examine their policies? If journalists are enemies, why listen to reporting that challenges your assumptions? If political opponents are traitors, why regard their victories as legitimate?

This is why I believe the Republican Party bears a particular responsibility for the condition of American political life today.

There is a documented lineage from a Gingrich-led Republican organization distributing campaign guidance telling candidates to define Democrats with words such as radical, sick, traitors, and corruption, through the rise of conservative talk radio and Fox News, and ultimately into Trump’s repeated portrayal of political opponents as Marxists, communists, and enemies.

You cannot spend decades teaching Americans to fear and despise one another and then profess bewilderment when the country becomes divided.

Nor can you replace argument with labels for decades and then be surprised when critical thinking deteriorates.

This is where I draw an absolute personal boundary. I will disagree with Republicans about taxes, immigration, government spending, health care, regulation, foreign policy, or virtually any other legitimate political issue. I have no objection to serious conservatives arguing passionately for what they believe.

But I want nothing to do with people who casually dismiss Democrats as communists, Marxists, traitors, or enemies of America. That is where the buck stops for me.

Those labels are not arguments. The Democratic Party is not a communist or Marxist party, and disagreeing with Democratic policies does not make someone a communist any more than disagreeing with Republican policies automatically makes someone a fascist.

When someone genuinely believes that tens of millions of Democratic voters—teachers, nurses, veterans, factory workers, clergy, business owners, retirees, public servants, neighbors, friends, and family members—are communists or Marxists simply because of how they vote, meaningful political conversation has already begun to collapse.

Disagreement I welcome. Demonization I reject. Stupidification I refuse to participate in.

The damage is visible everywhere. Americans increasingly inhabit separate political realities. Families avoid political conversation. Friendships fracture. Churches split. News consumption is heavily sorted by ideology, and many citizens assume bad faith before someone on the other side has even spoken.

That is why the phrase United States of America can sometimes feel more aspirational than descriptive. We remain one constitutional republic, but democracy requires more than elections and institutions. It requires citizens willing to think, question, investigate, distinguish, and occasionally change their minds.

Newt Gingrich did not create every division in America, but he helped accelerate a political culture in which contempt became strategy. GOPAC helped codify the language. Rush Limbaugh helped popularize a confrontational conservative media culture. Fox News became its most important television platform among Republican voters. Donald Trump then took the vocabulary of enemies and betrayal and pushed it further.

America did not become this divided simply because our policy disagreements grew larger. It also became divided because powerful political and media figures learned that resentment mobilizes, fear persuades, outrage attracts attention, and simplistic labels can be more politically useful than complicated truths.

That is the essence of stupidification: not teaching people to think more carefully, but giving them a word that tells them whom to fear and whom to hate.

The Republican Party built this political culture. Donald Trump supercharged it.

Until Republicans reckon with that history—and until Americans reject both the demonization and the intellectual laziness that sustain it—the word United in the United States of America will remain less secure than any of us should be comfortable admitting.

In the year 415, a mob of Christian zealots intercepted the carriage of Hypatia, the leading mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher of ancient Alexandria. Dragged into a nearby church, she was stripped naked, murdered with sharp tiles, her remains torn apart and burned. It was not a random act of street violence. It was a politically orchestrated execution carried out by a fanatical militia loyal to the city’s patriarch, Cyril.

In the fifth century, Alexandria was not just a city; it was the intellectual and economic hub of the Mediterranean world. As its patriarch, Cyril held one of the highest and most powerful offices in the global Christian church.

Cyril’s militia was called the Parabalani. Like all religious zealots, they did not view themselves as political thugs, but as soldiers of God whose righteousness gave them license to commit unspeakable violence and atrocities. To Cyril, Hypatia was the ultimate threat: An independent, highly educated woman whose intellectual authority owed nothing to Christian dogma. In a society where the church sought an absolute monopoly on truth, her dedication to empirical science and critical thinking wasn’t just a rival philosophy; it was an existential threat to the patriarchy itself.

With the masses suffering from economic stagnation and imperial decline, Cyril also needed a scapegoat to distract the lower classes from his own failures to improve their lives. By portraying Hypatia not as a scientist and philosopher but as a political conspirator and a practitioner of “black magic,” he successfully shifted the blame. By directing the rage elsewhere, Cyril was then able to consolidate and expand his own power.

The murder of Hypatia signaled the end of Alexandria as an open, pluralistic center of classical learning, ushering in an era in which the threat of sanctioned violence enforced ideological conformity. It was a world in which truth and fact were crucified on the altar of religious dogma, authority was unquestioned, and reason itself was burned at the stake.

Hypatia’s story offers a chilling mirror to the weaponized grievance, anti-intellectualism, and populist rage driving the MAGA movement.

If she lived in America today, the zealous mob would condemn Hypatia as a member of the “Deep State” whose “wokeness” is subversive, socialist, and demonic. Just as she was falsely accused of being a threat to society, today’s academia, scientific institutions, medical experts, mainstream media, and election officials are vilified as being under the control of corrupt elites dedicated to the downfall of “real Americans.”

The same zealotry and righteousness of the Parabalani was on full display during the January 6th Capitol insurrection. Driven by the “Big Lie” of a stolen election, ordinary citizens transformed into a unified, destructive force. Echoing the ancient mob that dragged Hypatia from her carriage, they hunted politicians down the halls of Congress and erected a gallows to hang the Vice President.

In both ancient Alexandria and modern America, the utter and complete rejection of truth, facts, and reason became a prerequisite for membership in the movement and fueled the mob mentality. They felt fully vindicated by their leaders’ rhetoric, operating under the delusion that their lawlessness was a higher form of patriotism guided by God’s will.

Crucially, the instigators of this mob violence rarely wield the weapons themselves. Patriarch Cyril never explicitly ordered Hypatia’s murder; he merely cultivated the toxic atmosphere that made her death inevitable, later absorbing her political influence once she was gone. Today’s MAGA leadership uses the same playbook of stochastic terrorism. By deploying fiery rhetoric, using terms like “vermin” to describe opponents, and exhorting followers to “fight like hell,” Donald Trump was channeling Cyrus, establishing plausible deniability while signaling exactly what actions he desired.

The darkest lesson of Hypatia’s brutal murder lies in the epilogue. Immediately after the mob ripped her to pieces, the Roman imperial court launched an investigation. However, Cyril used his power and the church’s immense wealth to bribe imperial officials. Though the government briefly attempted to strip Cyril of his private army, within a couple of years he successfully lobbied the Emperor to return the Parabalani to his direct command, establishing himself as the undisputed ruler of Alexandria.

The institutions had failed, and then the history was rewritten. Following his death, the church declared Cyril to be a Saint. The mob who killed Hypatia was praised for eliminating a practitioner of “black magic” and “Satanic wiles.” She was posthumously stripped of her status as an intellectual authority and reduced simply to a “pagan witch” who deserved her fate.

Centuries later, in 1882, Pope Leo XIII elevated Cyril to the rank of “Doctor of the Church,” a prestigious title reserved for the most important teachers in the history of theology.

Cyril’s survival and subsequent ascendance prove a terrifying historical truth: without strong, unyielding institutional guardrails, the architects of political violence are often rewarded rather than punished. History warns us that when a society allows mob mentality to dictate its politics and silence its institutional voices, it does not achieve stability; it sacrifices its intellectual and democratic core.

We must recognize Alexandria’s past not as a distant tragedy, but as an urgent warning of what happens when rage replaces reason, and everyday citizens turn a blind eye. The threat will not fade on its own; we the people must boldly confront the instigators of chaos before the darkness of antiquity becomes our permanent reality.

In a single 48-hour window, the President of the United States flooded the internet with over 40 bizarre, AI-generated images. Far from harmless digital slop or childish fantasy, these posts offer a window into a deeply disordered mind in profound psychological crisis.

Beyond revealing personal vanity and profound self-delusion, they signal an unhinged detachment from reality by the world’s most powerful executive; a visual alarm bell that all is not well.

It is the increasingly erratic behavior of a leader who can no longer distinguish between his personal grievances and statecraft, creating an alternative reality in which he asserts ultimate dominance over history, geography, and God, obliterating all resistance and taking over the world.

It is tempting to merely mock this madness, but the comedy fades instantly when we remember where this man sits. Trump is not an anonymous internet troll. He is the Commander-in-Chief. He operates within the Oval Office. The actual nuclear launch codes sit merely steps away from a man escaping into sci-fi fantasies of being a “Cosmic Commander” as the real-world geopolitical crises he has created continue to rage.

When the president’s official media presence blurs the line between truth and fiction, objective facts cease to matter. His loyal followers see a hyper-masculine savior who conquers nations. His critics see a laughingstock. Meanwhile, the baseline of shared truth required for a functioning democracy vanishes entirely.

A leader’s psychological stability is the ultimate foundation of national security. We are currently witnessing a president who prefers a digital sandbox over the massive responsibilities of his office, a profoundly insecure and troubled man who replaces real-world military strategy with imaginary heroics and self-aggrandizement.

When the leader of the free world retreats into a manic loop of digital self-worship, it is not normal. It is not a joke. Adorned with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, the custom-made ring is a watch-sized monstrosity featuring a Superman-style logo spelling out 4547 in honor of Donald Trump’s two terms in office. Inside, it bears the engraving: “Crafted in Antwerp for Donald John Trump.”

It is gaudy, loud, and at $35,000, blindingly expensive. It is also, in the most literal sense, a trophy of geopolitical transactionalism.

For decades, Trump’s public persona has been defined by an unyielding affection for shiny objects. From the 24-karat gold-plated fixtures in his Trump Tower penthouse to the gilded ballrooms at Mar-a-Lago, his aesthetic taste, or lack of it, has always gravitated toward the ostentatious.

But this lifelong obsession with glitter and gold is not merely an eccentric design preference. It functions as a precise psychological map. In Trump’s worldview, value is not measured by abstract ideals, ethical boundaries, or institutional norms. It is measured by weight, sparkle, and most importantly, cash value. Only months earlier, the Belgian diamond industry had pulled off a massive lobbying coup, successfully securing crucial U.S. tariff relief. To follow up a major policy win with a personal, $35,000 diamond-encrusted token of appreciation creates an optics nightmare that would sink any ordinary politician. For Trump, it was just another Tuesday.

Trump eagerly accepted the ring, even beaming into a prerecorded video message to offer a “very special thank you to my friends from Antwerp.” In doing so, he once again shattered long-standing White House norms designed to prevent foreign governments and corporate cartels from buying influence. Government ethics experts have rightly raised the alarm, noting that accepting such an extravagant personal gift erodes the very bedrock of anti-corruption standards.

Yet, this dynamic is entirely consistent with a political career built on a willingness to trade favors for gifts, access, and campaign donations. We have seen this playbook unfold repeatedly. Whether it is foreign officials booking blocks of empty rooms at his Washington, D.C. hotel during his first term, or billionaires flocking to Mar-a-Lago fundraisers to secure promises of favorable tax cuts and deregulation, the message has always been clear: access to American policy is a commodity available to the highest bidder.

The “Freedom 250” ring is a physical manifestation of this transactional presidency. It is a literal ring of power, forged by a foreign industry that directly benefited from U.S. executive decisions, and worn by a man who views the presidency through the lens of personal branding. By sliding the ring onto his finger, Trump signals to special interests worldwide that the machinery of the American government can be influenced by those willing to flatter his ego and fill his display cases.

Simply have Israel do the dirty work of launching a strike to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the Iranian people, who had been staging massive protests demanding an end to the Islamic Republic and a transition to a government that respects human rights, would rise up and overthrow the oppressive regime.

But instead of a popular uprising, the assassination triggered a wave of nationalism, mass public mourning, and furious demands for vengeance. Rather than dismantling the state, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) used the public outrage to solidify its grip on power and launch retaliatory strikes against U.S. and Israeli targets.

The illusion that this conflict could be contained died the moment the first retaliatory missiles left their launchpads. We are no longer observing an isolated duel; we are witnessing a systemic breakdown as an ever-expanding roll call of nations is being violently dragged into the vortex of the war, thus threatening global geopolitical stability and plunging the international economy into uncharted peril.

The war that began on February 28, 2026, is now in day 151, with no immediate end in sight.

Trump’s quick victory with this “excursion” failed to materialize. His boasts that everything was being decimated and the enemy was begging for peace were hollow bluster.

Neighboring Gulf states, including Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, have seen their critical infrastructure, five-star hotels, and desalination plants targeted. In Yemen, Houthi rebels have expanded operations to strike deep into Saudi Arabia’s backup energy corridors, demonstrating that no alternative bypass is safe. The United States has cycled through intense bombing campaigns, fluctuating ceasefire negotiations, and defensive posturing, while its weapon inventories run low and the cost of the conflict soars.

The potential consequences for global stability are catastrophic.

By entangling numerous Middle Eastern monarchies, the war has effectively dismantled decades of delicate diplomatic normalization, diverting attention and military capital from existing global flashpoints in Eastern Europe and the Indo-Pacific, including the war in Ukraine and ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.

Economically, the world is paying a devastating “Hormuz tax.”

Iran’s weaponization and selective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the choke point for 20-percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), has triggered what the International Energy Agency rightly terms “the greatest energy security challenge in history.”

The financial pain cascades far beyond gas pumps.

Maritime insurance rates have skyrocketed to near-uninsurable levels. The shock to Middle Eastern fertilizer and urea production has sent food prices soaring worldwide, generating a devastating food security crisis that hits emerging economies the hardest. Even structurally independent energy producers like the United States are feeling the burn, as globalized pricing structures mean American households are facing crushing inflation in transportation and basic consumer goods.

This war of attrition has broken the traditional playbook of geopolitical crisis management. For the first time in an energy crisis, the very nations generating the price shock cannot get their products to market to reap the windfall. They are being choked financially while Iranian missile attacks have reduced portions of their infrastructure to rubble.

Today, a fresh wave of major attacks by both sides shattered the brief pause in fighting. President Trump continues to insist that the U.S. and Iran are currently engaged in “very friendly negotiations” and “very deep talks” to establish a new ceasefire.

THE DARK AGES DESCENDED 1,550 YEARS AGO WITH THE COLLAPSE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE.

Driven by centuries of political instability, economic decay, plagues, and military overstretch, the fall into darkness was virtually imperceptible.

As the complex, interconnected global economy of Rome slowly fractured into localized feudal estates, the centralized institutions that maintained libraries and funded education vanished. Without access to verifiable information, public ignorance spread, leaving people “in the dark.”

Monasteries and cathedral schools became the only institutions preserving literacy, mathematics, and books, but it was an exclusive enterprise designed to train an elite religious and administrative class, not to inform or uplift the common peasantry. The clerics fiercely opposed any rational inquiry that directly threatened the church’s spiritual or political authority, especially within its own ranks. If a church scholar’s rational conclusions openly contradicted scripture or papal decrees, they were swiftly branded as heretics and faced imprisonment, torture, and death.

By convincing society that the Church alone held the keys to eternal salvation or damnation, the clergy gained total leverage over every level of medieval life, from peasant farmers to emperors. Questioning their authority was not just treason; it was a mortal sin that guaranteed eternal damnation.

FROM THE DARKNESS TO THE LIGHT

The Renaissance brought us out of the Dark Ages, bolstered by the invention of the movable-type printing press that broke the Church’s monopoly on information. By 1500, over 1,000 print shops operating across Europe produced more than 10 million books. Access to these books rapidly spread science, literacy, and new ideas emphasizing reason, inquiry, and rational thought over dogma and divine intervention.

YET TODAY, ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, FEWER THAN HALF OF ALL AMERICAN ADULTS READ A SINGLE BOOK OF ANY KIND OVER THE COURSE OF AN ENTIRE YEAR.

Our attention has been hijacked by social media. Its algorithms are designed to addict us to the compulsive act of obsessively scrolling for the next emotional hit, outrage, or affirmation of our biases. This has left most of us cognitively fatigued and increasingly incapable of the attention and focus needed to read a book, much less to fully comprehend the world in which we live.

As our attention spans fragment and evaporate, critical thinking gives way to rapid emotional responses. The dopamine of outrage transforms anger into self-righteous moral indignation. Digital echo chambers amplify this false sense of certainty as conspiracy theories and disinformation eclipse scientific fact, academic insight, and reasoned judgment.

This dumbing-down of the public has given us the rise of Donald Trump and the cult of MAGA, which rejects science, academia, empirical evidence, and proven fact in favor of grievance, division, anger, and insult. It is a world in which truth has been sacrificed on the altar of tribalism and public oratory based upon logic, fact, and moral character has given way to insults, slurs, dog-whistles, and obscenities.

Trump’s communication style is perfectly suited to an oral society. He employs epithets—“Low-Energy Jeb,” “Little Marco,” “Sleepy Joe”—that are easy to remember and repeat. He contradicts himself as though there is no record of his previous statements. Even his writing is almost indistinguishable from his speech. (It makes sense; Trump reportedly prefers dictation to composition.) His online posts are full of idiosyncratically placed punctuation, capital letters, and exclamation points. Many are memes with little text: One featured an image of an American warship hitting an Iranian airplane with a laser beam and included the phrase “Lasers: Bing, Bing, GONE!!!” ~ Rose Horowitch, The Atlantic

Like the rulers of the Dark Ages, Trump often claims to be anointed by God, places his name and images on public buildings, weaponizes power to punish his enemies, and seeks to rewrite history as he enriches himself and his family.

The “Shining City on the Hill” that Ronald Reagan once conjured to praise the promise of America is being replaced with dark authoritarianism that prioritizes absolute personal power over democratic institutions.

Yet, just as the thinkers of the Renaissance in the 14th Century rose up from the darkness that had consumed Western civilization, we possess the power to reclaim our intellectual sovereignty. The antidote to a fragmented digital age lies in our own hands: the conscious choice to unplug from the noise, engage with nuance, and revitalize the habits of deep reading and critical inquiry.

History proves that the forces of division or distraction cannot permanently suppress the human thirst for truth, reason, and knowledge. By choosing focus over outrage and empirical evidence over tribal illusions, we can re-illuminate our path of progress, defend our democratic ideals, and ensure that the light of reason continues to guide our human story forward into a brighter future.
