My father passed away peacefully at his home in Greer, South Carolina, on Wednesday afternoon.

For our family, this loss is sudden, tremendous, and unimaginably painful.

Please pray for my mother, who dedicated more than 60 years of her life and love to their union. He was more than a spouse to her, they were best friends. Please pray for our family, as this year has been one of profound loss.

For me, I have lost not only my dad, but my idol, my mentor, and my one true hero.

Everything I know about strength, responsibility, hard work, service, family, and leadership began with watching my father. Long before I ever held a title or stepped into public life, I was simply a son watching the example of a man I admired more than anyone else in the world.

My dad did not have to give speeches about service. He lived it. For thirty years, he worked to keep young folks off the streets. Convincing them that they were valuable and needed. He didn’t have to tell people what leadership looked like. He demonstrated it. When Black students faced discrimination, he organized the teachers to speak out and take bold action on their behalf, risking his own career. He was a man who measured his life by whether he had done right by his family and his community. That example helped shape the man I am today.

My father was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School and Paine College, a prominent HBCU in Augusta, Georgia.

For 30 years, my dad ran the local community center, which housed key programs that kept local youths off the streets. His work shaped an entire generation of our community.

For decades, young people had a place to go because my father and others believed they deserved one. They had programs, structure, mentorship, recreation, and adults in their community who cared enough to invest their time in them. Those programs were not busywork or just passing ideas to my dad. They were about real children, real families, and the future of the community he loved.

When I think about his legacy, I think about those young people. I think about the parents who knew their children had a safe place to go with the freedom to be themselves, and the countless lives saved because my dad kept the community center’s doors open.

My dad didn’t make a lot of noise, but no one could deny his presence.

Dad came from a family that understood hard work, self-determination, and entrepreneurship. He was the son of Bennie F. Brown Sr. and Julia Paige McKinney Brown.

Our family built a longstanding tradition of serving families in the Upstate through our funeral business. My grandfather helped lay the foundation for that legacy, and my father and his brothers helped carry it forward. Together they preserved and grew that tradition of service. My dad eventually became the CEO of Upstate Family Funeral Services while also building Brown Rental Properties & Repair.

To some people, those were businesses. But to my father, they were responsibilities to our family and community. The funeral home exists to care for families during some of the most painful moments of their lives. The property business represents ownership, independence, and the belief that Black families could build something lasting and pass it to the next generation. That legacy was handed down to me.

But what my father passed down was far greater than a business. He passed down a legacy rooted in selfless service, duty, and compassion.

People knew my father in many different ways. Some knew him as an educator or from the community center. Some knew him as a businessman and through our funeral home. Others knew him simply as Mr. Brown. A neighbor who was always willing to lend a hand, a friend who could make you laugh until your ribs hurt, and a mentor who could inspire you to reach higher than you could ever imagine. My dad was a man folks could depend on. And he dedicated his entire life to our family and our community.

Our family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary outpouring of love, prayers, calls, messages, and support we have received.

We ask that you continue to keep our family and all who knew and loved my dad in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Behind every candidate who challenges expectations, there are people thinking several moves ahead. Professionals willing to tell the candidate what he needs to hear instead of what he wants to hear. There are people opening doors, building relationships, studying numbers, understanding communities, challenging conventional wisdom, and figuring out how to do more with less.

During my campaign for the United States Senate, two of those people were Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings.

Brandon Upson: The Strategist Who Likes the Tough Races

Brandon Upson has built a career around campaigns other people might consider too difficult or long shots.

He is a veteran political operative known for working with progressive candidates, working-class people, and candidates who do not necessarily begin their campaigns with the blessing or financial resources of the party establishment. Those are difficult campaigns to run.

They require creativity because money cannot solve every problem. They require discipline because mistakes are more costly. Most importantly, they require a willingness to believe that ordinary people can change the political equation. That philosophy became part of the DNA of our campaign.

Upson served alongside former congressman Tim Ryan as senior advisors to my campaign and helped craft a strategy centered on something remarkably simple: go everywhere, listen to people, organize them, and give them something worth believing in.

So we went everywhere. We visited all 46 counties. Not simply the places political consultants told us mattered or the largest Democratic counties. We didn’t look for the rooms where candidates traditionally go looking for endorsements. We went where the people were.

Barbershops, family reunions, parades, community meetings, and grocery stores. We gave out groceries and clothing items in some of the most rural and in-need communities. We supported students who needed a meal or a book, or a place to organize after our state’s Lt. Governor called them a woke mob. And somewhere along the way, what began as a campaign became a volunteer army.

Our policy agenda wasn’t developed inside a political vacuum. It was sharpened by conversations with South Carolinians whose lives are directly affected by the decisions made in Washington. Folks like Mr. Tyler, the disabled veteran in Gaffney who was awarded partial disability in 1995 due to service-related injuries but was denied 100% disability in 2024. He was denied even though his injuries have gotten worse over time. Or Ashlyn, the abortion and women’s health activist in Horry County who is fighting to protect a woman’s right to choose and a doctor’s Hippocratic oath.

We listened to people struggling and hurting at the hands of failed policies and flawed politicians. And we listened to rural communities that too often feel forgotten once Election Day is over.

Those conversations became part of our strategy and our message.

Upson also pushed our campaign to treat Substack as something more than another place to dump press releases or social media-style posts. We used this platform to speak directly to people, explain our positions, tell longer stories, discuss policy, and invite South Carolinians into the thinking behind the campaign.

It became part newspaper, part campaign diary, part policy shop, and part organizing tool. That approach reflected Brandon’s larger philosophy: don’t wait for someone else to tell your story. Build the infrastructure to tell it yourself.

Brandon’s political work extends far beyond my campaign. He has served as a strategic consultant to labor unions across South Carolina and advised Democratic elected officials in every corner of the state. He was also selected as a member of the Obama Foundation Leaders USA 2025–2026 cohort, recognition that reflects the leadership work he has spent years building.

And across South Carolina politics, he has played a monumental role in galvanizing Black voters and supporting candidates including Jason Belton, Tiffany Boozer, Sylvia Wright, Vincent Coe, and Jermaine Johnson.

Upson understands something about South Carolina politics that cannot be learned from a spreadsheet:

People want to know that you see them. Our campaign tried to make sure they knew we did.

Pastor Roderick Cummings: Understanding the Institutions That Hold Communities Together

If Brandon Upson brought a particular kind of organizing and campaign strategy to our effort, Pastor Roderick Cummings brought something equally valuable: a deep understanding of South Carolina’s faith community, its history, its relationships, and its people.

There is a difference between having someone’s telephone number and having a relationship with them. Pastor Cummings has relationships. His Rolodex stretches across hundreds of pastors, ministers, faith leaders, and community leaders throughout South Carolina and across America. And these aren’t simply names in a database; these are people he knows, and they know him.

But most importantly, they trust him.

Within South Carolina’s Baptist community, Pastor Cummings is widely known and respected. His understanding of the church and its leadership, traditions, networks, conferences, conventions, and role within the Black community gave our campaign an early strategic advantage.

During the campaign, Pastor Cummings helped put me in rooms that mattered.

Church services, district conferences, state conventions, and revivals. Gatherings of our people where relationships have been built over decades. He opened doors very few people in politics can open. But reducing his contribution to his relationships would miss what made his counsel so valuable.

Pastor Cummings understands South Carolina.

He understands our history, our people, and the complicated relationship between race, geography, faith, politics, family, and community that has shaped this state for generations. South Carolina is not one political community.

The Lowcountry isn’t the Upstate. The Pee Dee isn’t Columbia. A rural church community isn’t a suburban neighborhood outside one of our growing cities. And you cannot understand South Carolina politics without understanding the history that produced those differences.

Pastor Cummings understood that from the beginning.

His knowledge helped guide our strategic planning and informed how we approached communities throughout this state. From this I learned that sometimes the most important political advice doesn’t come from polling. It comes from understanding people.

We Learned To Do More With Less

Here is another number I believe deserves attention. Our campaign spent less than $3 per vote.

Think about that.

Campaigns can spend enormous amounts of money on television advertising, consultants, polling, mail, digital advertising, and voter contact.

We didn’t have unlimited resources. So we had to be strategic. We had to organize and build relationships. We had to travel and communicate differently. And we had to make every dollar count.

That is why the contributions of Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings were so vital. They helped us build something money alone could not buy. Trust.

There were people who didn’t believe our campaign could become a serious contender for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate. We heard the doubts and conventional wisdom. We knew what people were saying in their political bubbles and group text threads. They said we should have been “Dead on arrival.” Some called us a campaign of rejects.

We didn’t allow their narrative to become our reality. We went to work. We traveled all 46 counties. We centered policy. We created conversations around the real-life struggles of South Carolinians.

We competed. And we built a campaign that folks are now finally beginning to understand. I will always be proud of what our team accomplished. And although my campaign for the United States Senate has ended, the work has not.

Today, I continue working under the counsel and guidance of Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings as we turn our attention toward supporting our Democratic nominees heading into the general election and flipping South Carolina blue.

Because this was never supposed to be about one election. It was supposed to be about building something.

South Carolina Needs More Builders

Politics has enough people who know how to spend money. We need more people who know how to build power.

There are very few political strategists in South Carolina with the combination of relationships, institutional knowledge, organizing experience, cultural understanding, strategic instincts, and willingness to challenge conventional wisdom that Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings bring to the table.

And somehow, they have a habit of making very difficult work look easy. I know differently. I saw the late-night and early-morning phone calls.

I saw the strategy sessions that took them away from their families.

I saw the relationships being built.

I saw doors open.

I saw volunteers mobilized.

I saw plans change because the facts on the ground demanded something different.

I saw what happened when two people who understand South Carolina in very different ways worked toward the same objective. Candidates receive the applause. Strategists rarely do. So I wanted to take a moment after this campaign to give credit where credit is due.

Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings helped us build something that people were told couldn’t be built.

And they helped us do it without the enormous financial resources people often assume are necessary to compete.

There is a lesson in that for the future of Democratic politics in South Carolina. The next generation of successful candidates won’t simply need bigger advertising budgets. They will need better organizing. Deeper relationships. Stronger connections to churches, labor, community organizations, and working people.

They will need to understand South Carolina beyond voter files and polling models. They will need strategists who know that politics is ultimately about people.

Brandon Upson knows that.

Pastor Roderick Cummings knows that.

And I am grateful they were in my corner. If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone thinking about seeking public office in South Carolina, particularly someone preparing to take on a race that the political establishment has already decided is too difficult, it would be this:

Find Brandon Upson and Pastor Roderick Cummings.

And seek their help by any means necessary. Because I’ve seen what they can build. And South Carolina hasn’t seen the last of us.

But politics has a way of changing when voters begin to believe they have a better option.

A new independent poll conducted by Blueprint Polling shows Democratic nominee John Vincent trailing MAGA Republican Congressman Russell Fry by just 4.2 percentage points, 41.1% to 36.9%, with roughly 22% of voters still undecided.

That number alone should capture everyone’s attention. In a district Republicans have dominated for years. A district Donald Trump won by 10.5% in 2024. This race has quietly become one of the most competitive congressional contests in South Carolina.

John Vincent Is A Different Kind of Candidate

John Vincent doesn’t fit the mold of the typical democratic candidate. In fact, John breaks the mold and then throws the pieces out the window.

He doesn’t come from a political family or from folks connected to wealth. He’s not a Party loyalist either, which is perfect for this district. John is the son of an immigrant from the Azores who worked as an educator before becoming an assistant superintendent of schools. But that wasn’t enough to provide the opportunities he wanted for his family.

At night, after a full-time job, John’s father worked a second job waiting tables so his children could attend college. Those sacrifices paid off.

John spent 20 years in the US Navy. He eventually rose to become a Command Master Chief Petty Officer. Much of his career was spent aboard submarines, where leadership decisions carried life-or-death consequences.

Later, he led a large command spanning seven military bases and five branches of the armed forces, overseeing training, morale, readiness, and mission execution.

Those aren’t campaign talking points. They’re experiences that teach crisis management, accountability, and leadership under extraordinary pressure. After retiring from the Navy, John joined Gallup, where he became a leadership development consultant advising major corporations and organizations.

His life story is rooted in service, not political ambition.

Meanwhile, Russell Fry Is Looking For His Next Opportunity

While John is introducing himself to voters across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee, MAGA Congressman Russell Fry is asking voters to send him somewhere else.

Fry recently entered the Republican primary to replace Lindsey Graham in the U.S. Senate while simultaneously remaining on the ballot for reelection to Congress. That decision has sparked criticism from Republicans as well as Democrats.

The classiest response came from fellow MAGA Congresswoman Nancy Mace, who wrote:

“If you’re running for two offices at once, you’ve already told us who you are. That’s not about politics anymore — that’s about power. You’re either with the people you serve or you’re not.”

Regardless of party affiliation, the criticism reflects a broader question many voters are asking:

If you’re already campaigning for your next promotion, how focused are you on the job you were elected to do?

Many residents throughout the 7th District have expressed frustration that Fry has treated the seat as a stepping stone rather than a commitment to service. That perception has only intensified the crossover support John Vincent is receiving.

Why This Race Suddenly Matters

Since it was created in 2010, Democrats have struggled to compete in District 7.

John Vincent may be changing that equation.

His military service resonates with veterans. His leadership background appeals to business leaders. His focus on public service connects with independents. And his message appears to be reaching voters who traditionally haven’t considered supporting a Democrat.

The latest polling doesn’t suggest that victory is guaranteed. But it does suggest something far more significant:

Voters are listening.

When a district rated R+12 suddenly becomes a single-digit race with more than one in five voters still undecided, it forces everyone to pay attention.

More Than the Democrats’ Best Chance

Too often campaigns ask voters to support a party. John Vincent is making a different argument. He’s asking voters to support leadership. Whether you’re Republican, Democrat, or independent, elections ultimately become a choice between two people.

One candidate built his career serving sailors, leading organizations, and helping communities solve problems.

The other is now campaigning for a promotion while asking voters to let him keep the job he already has.

The latest polling suggests many voters are weighing that contrast carefully.

And if the numbers continue moving in Vincent’s direction, South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District may become one of the biggest political surprises of 2026.

We weren’t backed by the political establishment. We didn’t have unlimited resources. What we did have was something far more valuable: thousands of South Carolinians who believed our state deserved better.

To every volunteer who knocked doors, made phone calls, hosted events, prayed for us, or donated to our campaign, I want to say thank you again for all you did to support our people-power campaign. Our “little engine that could.”

You reminded me that hope is still alive. In fact, today I believe something even more strongly than I did when I first entered the race:

South Carolina can elect Democrats statewide in 2026.

Not because I’m an optimist, but because the numbers say we can.

In 2020, Jaime Harrison received more than 1.1 million votes in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Just two years later, in 2022, Governor Henry McMaster, who is arguably the most popular Republican governor in modern South Carolina history, won reelection with 988,501 votes.

Think about that for a moment.

A Democratic candidate has already demonstrated the ability to earn significantly more votes than the strongest Republican statewide candidate received in the following midterm election.

The problem has never been that Democrats don’t have enough potential supporters. The problem has been whether we can organize them. And for the first time in a very long time, I believe we can.

South Carolina is more organized today than it has been since Barack Obama and Organizing for America invested in building real grassroots infrastructure across our state between 2008 and 2012.

What’s happening now isn’t being driven from Washington. It isn’t being directed by consultants who fly into South Carolina a few months before Election Day. It’s being built by local organizers, pastors, and community leaders who have come together with a mission to flip this state blue.

They have organized themselves into independent grassroots organizations and are coordinating efforts in churches, barber shops, beauty salons, civic organizations, neighborhood associations, union halls, and local businesses across South Carolina.

Their mission is simple:

Find the voters who have been sitting on the sidelines and bring them back into our democracy.

Over 200,000 Black voters who participated in recent presidential elections did not vote in our last midterm elections. And over 400,000 Democratic voters have not voted in the last three midterm elections.

If we close even part of that gap, the political map of South Carolina changes dramatically. That’ll send our state into Democrat +2 territory! That means we break the republican supermajority while sending Jermaine Johnson and Sam Skardon to Columbia as our next Governor and Lt. Governor. That means we’ll protect the future of public education by electing Sylvia Wright as our next superintendent of education.

That’s why I remain hopeful. Not because victory is guaranteed. Because victory is possible. But possibility alone doesn’t win elections.

People do. Organization does. Resources do. And field programs do. Every dollar invested in grassroots organizing moves us closer to victory.

That’s why I haven’t stepped away from this fight.

I couldn’t.

After everything I saw during our Senate campaign, I know what’s possible when ordinary people decide to do extraordinary things together. I couldn’t watch this historic statewide Democratic ticket fight alone when I know we have a real opportunity to make history.

So I’m asking one more favor of everyone who stood beside me during my campaign.

If you believed in our vision for South Carolina and believed our campaign represented something bigger than one election. Please continue that fight.

The result? A Republican State Treasurer who remains in office after presiding over a financial debacle involving a $1.8 billion accounting blunder, a historic vote by the South Carolina Senate to remove him from office, and a crisis so severe that it led to the resignation of the state’s Comptroller General.

If fiscal responsibility actually mattered to the leaders of the Republican Party, Curtis Loftis would no longer be South Carolina’s State Treasurer.

Legislative investigations concluded that the Treasurer’s Office, the Comptroller General’s Office, and the State Auditor’s Office were aware of problems for years. This scandal cost taxpayers millions in forensic audits, legal expenses, and ongoing investigations. This isn’t an example of financial conservatism. It is an example of blatant corruption.

Former Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom resigned after accounting failures involving the state’s books were exposed to the public.

Then came an even more remarkable moment.

In April 2025, the Republican-controlled South Carolina Senate voted 33-8 to remove Republican State Treasurer Curtis Loftis from office for willful neglect of duty. This was a historic and bipartisan rebuke that reflected years of frustration over the handling of the state’s finances.

Think about that.

Republican senators investigated a Republican statewide official and overwhelmingly concluded he should be removed from office. Yet despite that overwhelming vote, Curtis Loftis remained State Treasurer.

The House declined to complete the removal process before the end of the legislative session. Governor Henry McMaster was said to have influenced the House’s decision by speaking out against removing Loftis from office.

That’s the contradiction voters should remember.

When ordinary South Carolinians make costly mistakes like this, they’re expected to accept responsibility. They either lose their jobs or they go to jail.

When Republican leaders collude in one of the biggest financial failures in South Carolina history, costing taxpayers millions of dollars, they get a slap on the wrist and hundreds of thousands of dollars funneled into their campaigns.

We Deserve Better!

This election presents voters with a clear alternative.

Democratic nominee Vincent Coe isn’t running on slogans. He’s running on a career built around financial competency and leadership, regulatory compliance, and protecting the integrity of large financial institutions.

For more than two decades, Vincent Coe has worked where accountability isn’t optional.

They’ve told us government should live within its means. They’ve criticized spending, attacked deficits, and claimed to be the party of accountability. But every time they’re handed the keys to government, they prove that fiscal responsibility is only their campaign slogan.

This week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed that the Republican-led Pentagon has already spent $37.5 billion on the war in Iran. Now, Trump’s Republican administration is asking Congress to approve another $70 billion war package.

Think about that.

In a matter of weeks, Republicans are prepared to spend well over $100 billion on another conflict overseas. And who pays that bill?

You do. The American taxpayer. We pay with our tax dollars. We pay every time instability in the Middle East drives up prices at the gas pump. And our military families pay the highest price of all, as young Americans continue to risk, and in some cases lose, their lives in another costly war.

Republicans tell us we can’t afford universal healthcare or to lower prescription drug prices.

They tell us we can’t afford affordable housing, childcare, or meaningful investments in public education.

Yet somehow, there is always another $70 billion available to fund their war.

That’s not fiscal responsibility. That’s reckless spending. And unfortunately, the same hypocrisy we’re witnessing in Washington is playing out right here in South Carolina. Our General Assembly has failed to perform one of its most basic constitutional responsibilities: passing a state budget.

The fiscal year began on July 1, yet South Carolina is still operating under a continuing resolution because Republican leaders who hold a supermajority in both chambers cannot agree on a final spending plan. That uncertainty ripples across every corner of state government. Agencies cannot fully implement new programs. Planned investments are delayed. Local governments, school districts, nonprofits, healthcare providers, and businesses are left waiting while Republican politicians continue negotiating behind closed doors.

Every day without a finalized budget creates uncertainty for the very people who keep our state running. The people of South Carolina deserve better.

And at the center of this dysfunction is Senator Harvey Peeler.

As Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Harvey Peeler is one of the most powerful elected officials in South Carolina. He is one of the chief architects of the state budget and one of the key negotiators responsible for bringing budget talks to a conclusion.

Instead, negotiations have stalled while he and other republican lawmakers continue arguing over earmarks and spending priorities.

Here’s where the hypocrisy becomes impossible to ignore.

Harvey Peeler has publicly criticized the scale of House earmarks while simultaneously sponsoring nine Senate earmarks totaling $9,992,257 of his own.

According to the Senate Finance Committee’s Rule 26(f) earmark report, Peeler’s requests include:

• $2 million for the City of York’s “Project Green Landing”

• $2 million for sidewalk improvements in the Town of Clover

• $1.5 million for a new animal shelter and recycling center in Union County

• $1.5 million for water infrastructure rehabilitation in Clover

• Hundreds of thousands more for historic preservation, volunteer fire equipment, downtown revitalization, and additional water infrastructure projects.

Let me be clear.

I’m not arguing that every one of these projects lacks merit. I’m arguing that every taxpayer deserves transparency.

Take the $2 million Project Green Landing earmark.

The official Senate report tells taxpayers almost nothing.

It simply reads:

“City of York — Project Green Landing — $2,000,000.”

That’s it.

The public report does not explain who ultimately benefits from the property, what land is being purchased, how the purchase price was determined, whether the City of York requested the funding, whether the York City Council approved the project, which nonprofit will take ownership of the land, or why the South Carolina Department of Agriculture is administering the funds.

Trusted reports out of the Statehouse alleged that the City of York never requested the funds to begin with.

Taxpayers are expected to shut up and accept that spending $2 million is justified without being given the information necessary to evaluate whether it actually serves the public interest. For a party that constantly lectures everyone else about government waste and accountability, that’s a remarkable contradiction.

South Carolinians deserve to know where every taxpayer dollar is going.

Here’s the bigger picture.

Harvey Peeler says government should be responsible with taxpayer dollars. Yet he is one of the chief negotiators holding up the state budget while simultaneously sponsoring nearly $10 million in his own earmarks.

Washington Republicans tell us there’s no money for working families. Then they find another $70 billion for war.

Columbia Republicans tell us we need fiscal discipline. Then they spend weeks fighting over earmarks for their pet projects while South Carolina operates without a permanent budget.

It’s the same playbook.

Different zip code.

Pete Hegseth and Harvey Peeler may hold different offices, but they’re demonstrating the same failed philosophy.

There is always money for their priorities but never enough for yours.

If Republicans have taught us anything over the last several years, it’s that accountability doesn’t happen by accident. It requires leaders who have integrity, understand public finance, respect taxpayer dollars, and believe transparency isn’t a talking point—it’s a responsibility.

That’s exactly why South Carolina needs to elect Tiffany Boozer as our next Comptroller General.

After the catastrophic mishandling of $1.8 billion under Republican State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, South Carolina was forced to confront just how damaging weak financial oversight can be. The “accounting error” shook public confidence in state government and exposed serious weaknesses in how our finances were monitored and reported.

Tiffany Boozer didn’t create that crisis.

She was brought into the Comptroller General’s Office after it to help strengthen financial reporting, accountability, and internal controls.

She stepped up when South Carolina needed someone willing to restore trust.

“Why can’t we win statewide in South Carolina?”

The answers usually sound familiar. We didn’t raise enough money. The state is too Republican. Voters weren’t engaged. The national environment wasn’t favorable. But I believe we’re asking the wrong question. South Carolina doesn’t have a candidate problem. South Carolina has had a campaign problem. And it is one that has been plaguing the Democratic Party for years.

Far too many of our highest-profile Democratic campaigns have followed the same blueprint. A promising candidate emerges. National Democrats take notice. Local party bosses take control. The campaign is encouraged to hire the “best” campaign manager, the “best” general consultant, and the “best” media consultant. Too often, those professionals come from Washington, D.C., or other political hubs with impressive résumés, the highest price tags, but very little understanding of South Carolina.

Overwhelmingly white and male, these guys know the Beltway and the K Street consultants. They know the guy who knows the billionaire donor or the executive director of the donor table. But they don’t know South Carolina.

They don’t know our political culture or our communities. They don’t know the relationships that have taken us decades to build. And too often, they arrive believing they understand our state or how to win in our state better than the people who have spent their lives organizing, campaigning, and serving here.

That mindset has consequences.

Instead of building a campaign rooted in South Carolina, they recreate the same campaign they’ve run somewhere else. They bring in their buddies, hire their own vendors, and rely on familiar strategies regardless of whether they fit our state or not. When the campaign ends, the consultants move on to the next race with money in their pockets, leaving the South Carolinians to deal with the political fallout. The candidate is left explaining another loss, local relationships have been strained, and South Carolina operatives and vendors are told to wait another cycle.

The consultants collect another line on their résumé while South Carolina collects another defeat and another excuse national organizations can use to skip over our state.

I’m not suggesting that only South Carolinians can successfully manage campaigns here. Please don’t confuse my point here. I understand that politics has always benefited from people bringing fresh ideas and diverse experiences.

What I am saying is that experience alone is not enough. Respect and intention go a long way.

If you don’t understand the people, the culture, the geography, the history, and the relationships that drive politics in this state, then you’re operating at a disadvantage before the campaign even begins. And if you are going to be successful, you have to come here with the intention to win, leave this state better than you found it, be willing to learn from the folks on the ground, and be humble enough to admit you don’t know it all.

There is a difference between knowing how to run campaigns and knowing how to win in South Carolina. Those are not the same thing.

I often think about the opportunities Democrats have missed over the years. And I ask myself, Would Jaime Harrison be a United States Senator today if his campaign had looked different? Would Elizabeth Colbert Busch have become Congresswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch? Or would Rob Miller have won his congressional race?

No one can answer those questions with certainty. But they are fair questions to ask because our current formula has produced the same outcome over and over again. Loss after loss. At some point, we have to stop blaming the voters and start evaluating the structure of the campaigns themselves. The importing of campaign managers, media consultants, and general consultants has cost us some of the most devastating defeats.

This year presents one of the greatest opportunities Democrats have had in a generation.

After decades of Republican dominance, voters are showing signs that they are ready for something different. And they’re willing to vote for it.

The Democratic primary produced nominees like Jermaine Johnson, Jason Belton, Sylvia Wright, Tiffany Boozer, and Vincent Coe. These are all candidates who connected with voters across geographic, racial, and generational lines and won their races despite being outspent and rejected by the insiders. The only hands that selected them were the hands of the people.

At the same time, the Republican Party has become increasingly defined by failure and extreme policies of Donald Trump. Their level of MAGA extremism doesn’t always reflect where South Carolina’s general electorate is. Additionally, the vacancy created by the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham has also produced a rare statewide election at a moment when voters are paying close attention and want something different.

These conditions do not guarantee victory. But they do create opportunity.

We’ve seen evidence of this before. Joe Cunningham flipped the First Congressional District by presenting voters with an alternative to a MAGA extremist opponent, Katie Arrington, who embraced the most polarizing elements of Trump’s national politics.

We’ve watched Democrats flip local governments in Georgetown after residents grew frustrated with leadership they believed prioritized developers over everyday people.

We’ve seen Democratic gains in communities like Rock Hill, Aiken, and Fairfax where local organizing, trusted relationships, and community credibility mattered far more than expensive television commercials or digital campaigns.

These victories weren’t accidents. They happened because people understood the communities they were organizing. That kind of knowledge cannot be downloaded from a polling memo. It comes from knowing why you should spend two hours sitting with former State Senator Glenn Reese at his donut shop. And understanding why a texting program aimed at Lee, Williamsburg, Chesterfield, Edgefield, McCormick, and Allendale counties is unlikely to move enough voters to justify the investment.

It comes from recognizing the value of folks like Lisa Sweeney, Sam Broom, Donald Gilliard, Kwadjo Campbell, and Veronica Cooper. Folks whose influence isn’t measured by their social media following or DC connections, but by the trust they’ve earned in their communities. And might I add The Vision Walkers and G.A.N.G.S. In Peace to the list.

Those relationships are political capital. Too often, campaigns overlook them.

We also have to rethink where we invest our resources. For years, campaigns have devoted enormous percentages of their budgets to television advertising. Television still has a role. But it cannot continue consuming the overwhelming majority of campaign resources while field organizing, digital engagement, coalition building, and local infrastructure receive comparatively little investment.

The consultants may be comfortable with that model. Heck, it puts the most money in their pockets. But the voters are telling us something different.

South Carolina already has extraordinary talent. We have campaign managers, digital strategists, compliance professionals, field organizers, and communications experts. We have people who have spent years learning how to organize in one of the toughest political environments in America for Democrats.

Many of them have produced remarkable results with limited budgets and nearly no recognition.

Imagine what they could accomplish if they were trusted with the resources and authority to lead. I’m not talking about tokenism, where you hire a bright young minority as your campaign manager and then their every move is governed by a committee of old white men or DC consultants.

This is not an argument against outside expertise. It is an argument for partnership instead of replacement and for respecting local knowledge instead of dismissing it. My argument is for building campaigns that reflect South Carolina rather than trying to import a campaign model from somewhere else. Because this moment is too important to waste.

Opportunities like this don’t come around often.

If we fail, let it be because the voters rejected our ideas—not because we repeated a campaign model that has failed too many times before.

South Carolina deserves better.

Our candidates deserve better.

And our future depends on whether we’re finally willing to build campaigns that belong to the people they’re asking to serve.

Progressive Democrats are right to call this a victory for immigrant families, civil rights, and the Constitution. This decision protects children from being used as political targets. It protects families from being torn apart by fear. It protects the idea that citizenship is not something a president can erase with the stroke of a pen.

Governor Gavin Newsom put it plainly: birthright citizenship is a constitutional guarantee, and today the Constitution prevailed.

Both responses matter.

The progressive response reminds us who is harmed when politicians attack constitutional rights: working families, immigrant families, Black and brown communities, and children who had no say in where they were born.

Jason Belton, SC democratic candidate for Secretary of State, response reminds us of something just as important: we do not have to apologize for defending the Constitution. We do not have to choose between moral clarity and constitutional clarity. On this issue, they are the same.

But we should not make the mistake of believing one Supreme Court decision ends this fight.

Donald Trump and his allies tried to rewrite the 14th Amendment once. They will try again. If they cannot win in court, they will try through Congress. If they cannot change the Constitution, they will try to change who has the power to interpret it, enforce it, and protect it.

That is why elections matter. And that is why South Carolina matters now more than ever.

In South Carolina, we are not just voting for candidates. We are voting on whether our state will stand with the Constitution or stand with political extremism. We are voting on whether we will protect families or punish them. We are voting on whether the rights guaranteed after the Civil War still mean something in the state where so many of those battles were born.

The 14th Amendment was written out of America’s struggle to repair the damage of slavery and define who belonged in this country. South Carolina knows that history. We live with it every day.

So when politicians attack birthright citizenship, voting rights, public education, labor rights, and equal protection under the law, we should understand exactly what is happening. These are not separate fights. They are part of the same project: deciding who counts, who has power, and who gets protected.

Today, the Supreme Court did its job.

Now we have to do ours.

We need to organize. We need to register voters. We need to turn out every community that has been ignored, targeted, or written off. We need to elect Democrats in South Carolina who will defend the Constitution, protect working families, and stand up when our rights are under attack.

This ruling is a victory. But it is also a warning.

Rights are only as strong as the people willing to defend them.

Together, we proved them wrong.

While we did not win the Democratic nomination, our campaign earned more than 110,000 votes from South Carolinians who believed in a different kind of politics. One rooted in service, integrity, and the conviction that government should work for working people.

For that, I am deeply grateful.

To every volunteer who knocked doors in the heat, made phone calls after work, hosted events, put up signs, shared our message online, donated what they could, and encouraged their friends and neighbors to vote—thank you.

To every supporter who believed in our vision and stood with us when others doubted us—thank you.

You helped make history.

This campaign was never powered by corporate interests, political insiders, or wealthy donors. It was powered by people.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Our campaign spent approximately $3 per vote. Our opponent spent nearly $60 per vote.

Think about that for a moment.

While others relied on money, we relied on relationships. While others invested in consultants, we invested in communities. While others measured success by fundraising totals, we measured success by the people we inspired and the movement we built. And that movement produced more than 110,000 votes across South Carolina.

That is not a defeat. That is a foundation.

That is proof that ordinary people can still accomplish extraordinary things when they come together around a shared purpose.

I am especially proud that our campaign helped create momentum for a new generation of leaders across South Carolina. Last night, candidates like Jason Belton demonstrated that grassroots organizing, community engagement, and authentic leadership can still win elections. Jason’s win positions him as the first African American secretary of state since Reconstruction.

The polls are open, and now the power belongs to you.

Every election is important, but some elections define the future. This is one of those elections.

Today, South Carolinians have a choice: continue with the politics that have left too many families behind, or choose a new generation of leadership that will fight every day to lower costs, strengthen public education, expand healthcare access, create good-paying jobs, and ensure every community has the opportunity to thrive.

As someone who was born and raised in Greenville, educated in our public schools, and dedicated my career to helping students and families succeed, I know firsthand the challenges our communities face. Over the last several months, I’ve traveled to all 46 counties twice. Driving from Greenville to Union, from Orangeburg to Charleston, from small towns that have been forgotten to neighborhoods where families are working harder than ever and still struggling to get ahead.

I’ve listened.

I’ve listened to parents worried about paying for gas and daycare. I’ve listened to seniors choosing between medicine and groceries. I’ve listened to young people who wonder if they’ll ever be able to buy a home, start a family, or build a future right here in South Carolina.

And I’ve listened to people who have lost faith that anyone in Washington is fighting for them.

I understand why.

For too long, Washington has worked exactly the way the powerful wanted it to work. The people with the biggest checkbooks get the loudest voices. The people doing the hardest work get left behind.

That’s why I’m running.

I’m not running because the party bosses told me to run, or because I want a title or to become a social media influencer.

I’m running because I believe South Carolina deserves a senator who understands the lives of the people he serves.

I wasn’t born into privilege.

I was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina by two public school teachers. The values that shaped me came from my family, my church, my community, and the educators who invested in me when they didn’t have to.

I learned early that success isn’t about what you accomplish for yourself. It’s about what you do for others.

That’s why I’ve spent my career helping students reach college, helping institutions grow, and creating opportunities for young people who simply needed someone to believe in them.

As Vice President at three Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people are given a chance. I’ve seen students lose hope for their future, and with a bit of support, encouragement, and at times, tough love, I’ve seen those same kids become doctors, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. I’ve watched lives change because someone invested in their future.

That’s what public service should be about. Not serving special interests or big donors. But serving people.

The choice in this election is becoming very simple.

Do we want a South Carolina that works only for the wealthy and well-connected? Or do we want a South Carolina that works for working people? Because right now, too many families feel like they’re doing everything right and still falling behind.

The cost of living keeps rising.

Healthcare costs keep rising.

Housing costs keep rising.

Gas prices are through the roof.

They said it was unrealistic to believe that ordinary people could accomplish extraordinary things. But I’ve spent my entire career proving them wrong.

I’ve seen what happens when people stop accepting limitations and start believing in possibilities. And I’ve seen what happens when communities come together around a common purpose.

My family taught me that.

Growing up, I learned lessons from people who worked hard every day without expecting recognition. People who believed that character mattered more than status. People who taught me that if God blesses you with an opportunity, you have a responsibility to help somebody else.

Those lessons still guide me today.

That’s why this campaign has never been about me.

It’s about the teacher who buys classroom supplies out of his own paycheck, the nurse working a double shift, the veteran fighting for the care she earned, and the small business owner trying to keep the lights on but can’t seem to catch a break in Trump’s economy.

It’s about the student wondering whether college is still worth it.

It’s about every South Carolinian who feels like Washington has forgotten them.

I haven’t forgotten you. And I never will.

Because I know where I came from. And I know who I am and who’s I am And I know the potential that exists in every community across South Carolina.

Now, Donald Trump is once again showing us how far we have drifted from that standard.

Over the past week, artist after artist reportedly withdrew from Trump’s Freedom 250 event after learning more about its political connections and deciding they could not, in good conscience, participate. Rather than reflect on why so many performers wanted nothing to do with the event, Trump responded by floating the idea of turning the celebration into a massive political rally centered around himself.

Think about that for a moment.

An event supposedly intended to celebrate America’s 250th birthday is at risk of becoming yet another Trump campaign spectacle.

This is not normal.

The 250th anniversary of the United States should be about the American people. It should be about our history, our democracy, our military families, our workers, our communities, and our shared future. It should not be about feeding one politician’s ego.

Yet time and time again, we see the same pattern. Public institutions become vehicles for personal promotion. Government resources become props for political theater. National celebrations become opportunities for self-glorification. And congressional Republicans, who should serve as a constitutional check on executive power, remain largely silent.

The corruption is no longer hidden. It is happening in plain sight. What is perhaps most remarkable is who finally drew the line. It wasn’t the elected officials who swore an oath to defend our Constitution.

It was musicians. Entertainers. Artists.

These individuals looked at the situation and decided that there are some things they simply would not endorse. They understood that participating would lend credibility to something they believed crossed a line.

That took courage. And in today’s Republican Party, courage has become increasingly rare.

Too many members of Congress know better. They know that our nation’s institutions should not be used for personal political gain and that no president should treat America itself as a branding opportunity. They know that public service is supposed to be about the people, not the politician. Yet they continue to look the other way.

As someone running for the United States Senate, I believe South Carolinians deserve leaders who are willing to tell the truth—even when it is uncomfortable.

The truth is that America deserves better than this. We deserve leaders who respect public institutions, who understand that patriotism is not a marketing strategy. And we deserve leaders who put country before party and democracy before personal ambition. Most of all, we deserve a Congress that remembers its job is to serve as a check on power, not a cheering section for it.

I am grateful that these artists and entertainers had the courage to stand by their principles. Their actions remind us that citizenship is not limited to elected officials. Every American has a responsibility to speak up when something is wrong.

The question now is whether the people we elected to lead will find that same courage. America’s 250th birthday should belong to the American people. Not to Donald Trump.

They’ll tell you not to spend too much time in places like Dillon County, Allendale County, Marlboro County, Bamberg County, or Williamsburg County. They’ll tell you the numbers don’t add up. They’ll tell you to focus somewhere else.

I disagree.

In fact, I believe that mindset is one of the biggest reasons South Carolina has fallen behind.

In only ten months, the Brandon Brown campaign has made rural communities a priority from day one. We did this not because it’s politically convenient, but because it’s the right thing to do. If we’re going to build a stronger South Carolina, we cannot leave entire communities behind and then wonder why our state continues to struggle with many of the same challenges year after year.

The truth is that increasing voter participation in our rural communities isn’t just important — it is absolutely necessary if we’re going to win in November.

And we can’t wait until a few months before Election Day to start showing up. We have to start now.

Too often, politicians only visit rural communities when they need votes. They parachute in for a campaign stop, make a few promises, and disappear once the election is over. The people who live in these communities deserve better.

As far as I know, I’m the only Democratic candidate in the U.S. Senate race who can say that. Because I believe a simple truth:
