I recently dealt with mold exposure and remediation outside of my home and wanted to share a resource I found extremely helpful.

Mold is a complicated subject that can have serious health implications but is unfortunately widely misunderstood and mishandled. Wherever there is moisture — and there are many ways moisture and water can accumulate in a building or home — there is potential for mold growth, even in dry climates. Our increasingly airtight structures can also contribute to humidity and moisture problems when ventilation isn’t adequate.

Health effects associated with moldy environments can vary significantly from person to person depending on a range of factors. One family member may experience significant symptoms while another has mild or none at all. Again, it can be a confusing landscape.

Adding to this is the unfortunate reality that remediation can range into Wild West territory; according to Change The Air Foundation, only 7 states have licensure or certification programs for mold remediators.

A few tried-and-true essentials for sunny days and nights away.

TERNS Mayday, Intensive After-Sun Recovery: I forgot to spray my feet with mineral sunscreen on a recent kayaking adventure and, wow, did they get burned.

I was given this lotion to try, formulated with a blend of bioactives that the brand says can “accelerate your skin’s natural healing, neutralize chronic inflammation, restore cellular damage, and minimize peeling.” I found it significantly reduced the swelling and redness of the burn, and therefore my sun guilt. I also layered castor oil over the lotion for a few nights, which may have contributed to the healing, but either way, TERNS is a keeper.

Hypochlorous Acid: Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, hypochlorous acid is a Swiss Army knife for every season, but I especially appreciate it in the summer. There are plenty of brands on the market, but what matters most is choosing one with a pH between 3.5 and 5.5. Because hypochlorous acid is an unstable compound, it should be stored in an opaque, sealed container.

Spray it on after a swim, a sweaty tennis match, or a flight. The list goes on.

AI DATA CENTERS

There are compelling reasons to use AI, and these podcasts with Erin Brockovich aren’t an attempt to vilify it. But there’s also a critical conversation to be had about the impact the massive data centers powering AI have on health, wildlife, and natural resources.

HIGH-LEVEL SUMMARY

1. Water

• Brockovich describes facilities using hundreds of thousands or millions of gallons per day for cooling.

• The concern is amplified when facilities are built in drought-prone regions or areas with over-stressed groundwater systems.

• Local communities reporting low water pressure, wells going dry, and turbid water.

• Concerns about PFAS & other chemicals associated with industrial cooling entering into wastewater systems or the environment, including through leaks from closed-loop systems.

2. Energy

• AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, creating demand for additional generation, substations, transmission lines, and other grid infrastructure.

• Brockovich asks who should ultimately pay for this infrastructure, and shares reports of dramatic increases in utility costs in some communities.

3. Land & Food Security

• Data-center projects can be enormous in scale, transforming rural areas that were previously farmland, ranchland, or undeveloped land.

• Brockovich questions whether we’re sacrificing land and other resources that could become increasingly valuable as climate and water pressures intensify.

4. Wildlife & Livestock

• One memorable anecdote comes from a Texas rancher who reported that his livestock haven’t had live births since an AI Data Center was constructed near his land.

• Significant habitat loss for wildlife with large-scale development.

• Brockovich raises concerns about changes in bird migration patterns during construction and once facilities become operational.

5. Health – Noise & EMFs

• Data centers aren’t just large; they’re continuously operating industrial facilities, with noise that can travel miles. Nearby residents have reported constant mechanical buzzing and vibration, as well as disrupted sleep and decline in mental and physical health.

• One woman with a pacemaker reported experiencing atrial fibrillation near a facility. Brockovich connects her experience to electromagnetic fields associated with the centers and says she’s heard similar concerns from others.

• The broader lesson Brockovich says she learned from cases such as Hinkley is that communities often notice something is wrong before the scientific evidence catches up. (In Hinkley, California, PG&E contaminated groundwater with hexavalent chromium, a case later made famous by the Erin Brockovich film).

Rowan Jacobsen, an award-winning science and nature writer, takes a topic often reduced to a single talking point — avoid the sun — and brings much-needed nuance back into the conversation in both his book, In Defense of Sunlight: The Surprising Science of Sun Exposure, and this podcast.

CLEANING CABINET

If you find yourself buying multiple (often expensive) cleaning products for different uses, here are a few resources to help simplify your routine down to four — maybe five — non-toxic essentials that can handle most tasks.

Two important but chemically and functionally different cleaning agents are soaps (such as Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Soap) and detergents (such as Sal Suds).

SOAP: Soap is made from natural fats or oils (such as vegetable oil or animal fat) that react with an alkali (usually sodium hydroxide). Best used with warm water.

DETERGENT: Detergents are made from synthetics (petrochemicals) or plant-derived compounds. They often contain enzymes and are effective on tougher, more specific stains. Detergents work well with both warm and cold water.

STELO GLUCOSE MONITOR

After reading Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspé, I was inspired to wear a glucose monitor. I found the data fascinating and informative. If you’re curious to learn what causes your spikes, and whether Inchauspé’s tips actually curb them (spoiler: they do), I found the Stelo monitor to be a good option. It’s surprisingly painless to apply, and the app is easy to navigate.

I personally didn’t love having a Bluetooth device directly on my body, but I still found it worthwhile to wear for a limited time to collect data.

While it appears to be a non-toxic option (the tin lists a blend of soy wax, coconut oil, and beeswax with a lead-free cotton wick), I learned it likely contains synthetic fragrance, which is unfortunate if you’re looking for a truly clean option.

Monastery handcrafts all of its clean beauty products in their San Francisco lab, with a philosophy rooted in supporting the skin’s microbiome and restoring the skin barrier.

I first came across aesthetician and Monastery founder Athena Hewett on a podcast and was struck by both her approach and rigorous sourcing standards.

NATURAL WINE SCRIPT

I love sharing natural wine recommendations with friends, but it can be difficult to track down exact bottles across different cities. Here’s a brief guide to what to ask and look for at your local shop:

Key question: Do you have any biodynamic, low-intervention wines? Something made in a traditional method with minimal additives?*

• *Simply asking for natural wine or a bottle made using traditional methods may be enough, but I’ve included the additional terms above, as you may need to be more specific depending on the shop.

• Organic wines alone don’t necessarily fit the bill, as this refers to how the grapes are grown, not necessarily how the wine is made and what may be added.

• These wines are often European (especially from France, Italy, Germany, and Austria). A knowledgeable shop can guide you to local exceptions, but when in doubt, I tend to look to these countries, where there’s a higher concentration of natural (and oftentimes generational) producers and stricter standards.

• You can also ask about importers like Louis/Dressner, Kermit Lynch, and Grand Cru Selections, which are known for sourcing natural wines.

THE PLASTIC DETOX

The Plastic Detox is a good introduction to the nuances of plastic exposure (fair warning: it’s done in a sort of splashy film style, but it gets its point across).

Shanna Swan, PhD, began exploring the decline in sperm count related to environmental factors after being appointed to a National Academy of Sciences committee in 1995. In the film, she structures an experiment with couples struggling with infertility, asking them to follow several key guidelines:

• Avoid food and beverages that come in plastic packaging (including takeout)

• Avoid fragrance products and perfumes

• Use only natural personal care products

• Avoid synthetic textiles and petrochemical dyes

• Avoid handling receipts

Her message is ultimately optimistic: “It doesn’t look great right now. It can change, and you can help with the change,” noting that it takes about 70 days to create new sperm.

While she acknowledges the study’s limitations (no control group and a small sample size, for example), Swan helps lay the groundwork for more comprehensive research.

I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s encouraging, to say the least.

If not, here’s a quick introduction to Jessie Inchauspé, the French biochemist making glucose both understandable and engaging. She explores the health impacts of glucose spikes (inflammation, heart health, hormone disruptions, and more) and shares simple graphics that break down food pairings and timing — for example, eating vegetables before carbs reduces spikes.

BONE BROTH PROTEIN

In a previous newsletter, I broke down clean protein powders. Paleovalley made the list, but I was curious about the organic flavors listed in their Chocolate, Vanilla, and Salted Caramel options.

Protein Powder List:

I reached out for insight, as “flavors” can sometimes be deceptive, but I found their detailed reply (outlined below) reassuring.

Paleovalley Response:

“While our blends remain proprietary information we can share organic flavors are derived from various organic and non-GMO plant materials including fruits, spices, and vegetables grown without the use of pesticides. The starting material for organic flavors cannot utilize synthetic extraction solvents, synthetic carriers, or artificial preservatives. Organic flavors are different from natural flavors.

Natural flavors can contain up to 100 ingredients including incidental additives like polysorbate 80, BHA, and BHT which are used to stabilize and preserve and are not required to be labeled. They can also be derived from starting materials grown with pesticides and genetically modified ingredients (GMOs), often utilizing a GMO corn-based carrier, and are far less regulated. Organic flavors allow us to optimize our products’ flavor without utilizing synthetic, genetically modified, or pesticide-containing ingredients.” - Paleovalley Support

The bone broth protein is crafted from 100% grass-fed and finished beef bones and extracted through slow simmering — no chemicals or solvents. While I feel comfortable with their explanation, Unflavored, Savory Original, and Turmeric Ginger are alternatives without organic flavors.

The Dark Side of Beauty Documentary

Absolutely no shame around past or present decisions, but this topic feels important given how ubiquitous and normalized neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, Jeuveau, and Letybo) have become. Most women (and increasingly men) don’t second-guess their decision to get botulinum toxin injections, likely because adverse effects aren’t often discussed — or even connected.

The documentary explores the risks, noting that “the statistics are that 1 in 100 women are likely harmed or injured by these injections.” Here’s an introduction to the film by the creator, Aaron Everitt.

Just when I thought I’d rid my kitchen of all sneaky culprits, it was pointed out to me that my Nespresso milk frother was lined with that dirty, dirty word — Teflon. (For reference, I had the Aeroccino 3. Apparently, the Aeroccino 4 now has a ceramic coating).

Granted, there are fewer chances for scratches inside a milk frother than a pan, but I’d still prefer to avoid Teflon as much as possible. Brands such as Efferdent, Retainer Brite, and others often use persulfates (specifically potassium monopersulfate) in their dissolving tablets, a powerful oxidizing agent also used in textile bleaching and to “shock” pools to break down contaminants. While some may argue the risk is minimal because the solution is rinsed off, I cautiously avoid altogether.

I’ve found the easiest, non-toxic way to clean dental appliances is using an ultrasonic cleaner, like the ZIMA, with a drop of unscented castile soap. Let the device do its thing, then rinse after.

THE JOY OF BOOK READING

I just finished Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, ahead of the release of the new film adaptation. The movie appears to be far more sensualized than the book, which reads as a dark tragedy more than a traditional romance (but who am I to judge Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie getting steamy on the big screen?).

Whatever the draw, I appreciate that people are purchasing books, with sales of the gothic classic more than doubling in 2025, according to a New York Times article — coinciding with the ramp-up of the film’s promotion.

MINI TRAMPOLINE: I’ve landed on 100 jumps — often while staring at the sun — to get my lymphatic system moving each morning. While fun, you can forego equipment and stick with bodyweight movements instead.

Speaking of which (and especially for the guys)… have you seen Mike Holland’s routine? It includes lymphatic shakes/hops, body waves, arm swings, trunk twists, dead arms, golf swings, marches, ballet squats, and horse stance.

INFRARED PEMF MAT: This mat is a multitasker, and it took me longer than I care to admit to learn how to optimize it by adjusting the Hz levels: sleep (Level 1), grounding (Level 2), meditation (Level 3), or focus (Level 4).

SHAKTI ACUPRESSURE MAT: Are the plastic spikes on the mat sharp? Yes. Does it hurt (in a good way) until you take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to sink into the mat and its acupressure points? Also yes. The brand claims it can “melt tension in minutes,” and honestly, I think it delivers by activating acupoints with 8,000 pokey points spread across the mat.

I purchased the premium mat made from organic cotton and plant-based foam (sourced from trees in India and Sri Lanka). The spikes are attached via a clipping method with no chemicals or glue.

POPSICLE MOLDS: There are great facial ice rollers on the market, but it’s simple enough to add filtered water to popsicle molds and pop them in the freezer. Once frozen, the handle makes it easy to gently roll over your face (just be sure they’re not too frozen to avoid ice burn).

Egyptian Magic Cream

On a recent ski trip, I rediscovered Eqyptian Magic cream in my travel kit. Think of it as a natural alternative to Vaseline or Aquaphor, without refined petroleum ingredients. AN INCONVENIENT STUDY

It felt timely to highlight the documentary An Inconvenient Study, given the CDC’s updates to the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule earlier this week.

The CDC’s changes focus on three groups, with a reduced recommended schedule intended to better align with peer nations. This newsletter by board-certified pediatrician Dr. Joel Gator offers a concise breakdown. This follow-up post addresses legitimate concerns.

Back to the documentary: it’s under 90 minutes and, in my view, well worth a watch — even if only out of cautious curiosity.

A few key highlights:

• We’re told the 72 previously recommended dosages were safe and effective. But “not one has ever been subject to a pre-licensing placebo-controlled trial” - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Note: While placebo-controlled trials are considered the gold standard for pharmaceutical products, the topic is nuanced. Ethical considerations are cited as the defense for placebo groups receiving older versions of a vaccine or an active control rather than an inert saline placebo.)

• Based on the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, you “can’t sue a manufacturer of a vaccine; it’s one of the only products in America that has what they call liability protection.”

Uncomfortable Studies

• Protection at a high price: A comparative study conducted by Dr. Peter Aaby of vaccinated and unvaccinated children receiving the DTP vaccine in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, found that while immunization protected against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, the vaccinated group had a higher overall mortality rate.

  • “…the vaccine did protect against the disease they were vaccinated for — the kids didn’t die of diphtheria, tetanus, or pertussis — only one problem… they were dying at a 5× rate from all these other issues.”

Why hasn’t a study been disclosed that clearly shows fully vaccinated children have better overall health outcomes than unvaccinated children?

• Marcus J. Zervos, MD, infectious disease expert at Henry Ford Health System, produced “Impact of Childhood Vaccination on Short- and Long-Term Chronic Health Outcomes in Children: A Birth Cohort Study,” but it was never published.

• Zervos states in the documentary, “It’s important information because it did show a difference between the groups,” but “publishing something like that, I might as well retire — I’d be finished.”

The study states, “ …in contrast to our expectations, we found that exposure to vaccination was independently associated with an overall 2.5-fold increase in the likelihood of developing a chronic health condition, when compared to children unexposed to vaccination.”

The film and buried study highlight the need for critical analysis and additional research:

“Can we say that the Henry Ford study proves that vaccines are causing the chronic disease epidemic? No, we cannot. A retrospective study does not prove causation. What we can say is that we believe it is showing a signal — a red flag waved in the air by the scientific method.”

NOTE: A reanalysis of the original study, discussed during a September 2025 U.S. Senate hearing, found that “the data shows that for symptoms characteristic of neuropathies in the autism spectrum, there is a 5.491-fold increase in the vaccinated cohort.”

Clean Protein Powders

While I don’t personally use protein powder, I’ve been asked for recommendations, including vegan options, and I do love a good deep dive. Here are a few clean choices with caveats noted.

ANIMAL-BASED

HUBERMAN LAB: Using Red Light to Improve Metabolism & the Harmful Effects of LED

An impactful episode that clearly explains the light spectrum, ranging from short wavelengths to long wavelengths, and the especially healing effects of longer wavelengths.

Speaking of healing light, I’ve been using beeswax candles around my place. It’s a nice nighttime transition, eliminating the need to always flip on lights as you go from space to space.

COPPER OUTDOOR BATHS

I didn’t know I needed a copper outdoor tub (dream home wishlist with a mountain view, of course), but now I can’t un-know it.

It makes perfect sense: copper retains heat exceptionally well, it doesn’t corrode, and the patina gets more beautiful with time. Because it helps maintain the water’s temperature, you can use these tubs for either hot soaks or cold plunges. They can even be outfitted with air jets, and since copper is naturally antibacterial — and there are no added chemicals like in a traditional jacuzzi — you can drain the water directly onto nearby grass or into a garden. I’ve clearly gone down a honey rabbit hole lately — bees are fascinating and their byproducts are therapeutic.

FORM WORKOUTS

I’ve been loving FORM, a digital workout platform with a great mix of classes — Strength, Mat Pilates, Pre- and Post-Natal, and other custom programs. You can check off a workout almost anywhere: some use weights, while others are equipment-free and travel-friendly. Most classes run around 30 minutes, but you can filter for longer 40+ minute sessions or 10–20 minute workouts when you just need some quick movement.

GARLIC HONEY REMEDY

There are plenty of benefits to consuming raw honey — it’s rich in antioxidants, antibacterial, antifungal, and supports immune health — and raw garlic, often called nature’s antibiotic, as it’s antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and detoxifying. Garlic even supports liver function and is known to help cleanse parasites.

I’ve found the easiest way to enjoy both of these powerhouses is by making a jar of garlic honey and taking a spoonful daily.

Remedy recipe:

1. Lightly smash 8–10 garlic cloves. Smashing releases the active compound allicin. Let the garlic rest for about 10 minutes to maximize allicin formation.

2. Fill a clean jar about two-thirds full with raw or manuka honey and add the garlic, leaving some space at the top. Stir to submerge the garlic fully, then seal tightly with a lid.

3. Store in a cool, dark place for at least 7 days, or up to a month, before consuming to allow gentle fermentation to occur.

Optional add-ins:

• 1 tsp raw apple cider vinegar

• ½ tsp freshly grated ginger

• ½ lemon peel strip or a squeeze of lemon juice

• A pinch of cayenne or turmeric

Notes:

• Do not give honey to infants under 1 year old (risk of botulism).

• The honey will become thinner and more garlic-infused over time.

• Use non-metal utensils — like wooden spoons — to preserve enzymatic activity.

As I get ready for a backpacking trip, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how far dehydrated food has come. Here are a few clean options that you’ll actually look forward to having at camp.

Instant Coffee

While plenty of products on the market, these are either sugar-free or sans conventional sugar.

• Four Sigmatic Organic Mushroom Latte: Organic coffee, functional mushrooms, coconut milk powder, and palm sugar. They also have organic mushroom instant coffee without the extras.

• Swift Coffee: This brand has lots of instant options, but their decaf is especially great as Swiss Water processed rather than chemically decaffeinated.

• Farm to Summit Instant Latte: Organic coffee, whole milk, and maple sugar.

• Alpine Start Coffee + Creamer: Colombian coffee, coconut cream powder, and no sweetener.

• Laird Maple Instant Latte: Coconut milk powder, functional mushrooms, and maple sugar.

Freeze-Dried Meals

• Wild Zora: A range of meals including AIP-compliant, paleo with grass-fed & gluten-free ingredients, and plant-based.

• Luxefly Basecamp: Gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free options with organic vegetables.

• Heather’s Choice: Grass-fed & gluten-free meals.

STAINLESS STEEL VITAMIX PITCHER

A sneaky plastic item that remained in my kitchen was my Vitamix container. The base/motor has held up well over the years, but the inside of the pitcher was covered in scratches. As with other plastic products, friction against the surface — think frozen ingredients hitting the sides — can release micro- and nano-plastics into your food.

Opt for thick glass or stainless steel pitchers instead.

I replaced mine with this one made from 304 food-grade stainless steel. For extra peace of mind, you can also purchase directly from Vitamix (at a higher price point, of course).

PEPTIDES & BIG PHARMA’S INFLUENCE

There’s much discussion on peptides, often with calls for FDA oversight to ensure safety and quality. This podcast explores a less discussed topic: how pharmaceutical lobbying influences those regulations. Brigham Buhler, founder of the functional-medicine clinic Ways2Well, shares his experiences with the agency and argues that big pharma may undermine quality and innovation.

• Buhler argues that Big Pharma—companies like Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk—seeks to monopolize and patent peptides (keep in mind peptides are short chains of amino acids naturally produced by the body, but can be lab-synthesized).

• Trying to patent over 150 peptides.

• He explains how compounding pharmacies can offer safer, cheaper, and more individualized therapy (for example, blends or a “micro-dose” to suit individual patients and reduce side effects).

• He argues that the commercial GLP-1 products are typically dispensed at higher doses—and therefore higher prices—due to insurance reimbursement incentives.

• Listen for more details, as well as a discussion on the federal farm bill that would greatly limit or bar lawsuits over glyphosate (Roundup) and other pesticides.

EXAMINING THE GLASS STUDY FURTHER

A recent study published in The Journal of Food Composition and Analysis found that glass bottles contained significantly more microplastics—sometimes up to 50 times more—than plastic bottles or cans. That said, nuance is important.

The microplastics are likely from the polyester-based paint on the metal caps, which can flake off through microscopic scratches caused by friction during storage and transport.

It’s also important to consider the types of beverages primarily implicated: sodas, beers, and lemonades, in contrast to water and wine, which contained relatively low levels.

For example, Mountain Valley is a popular spring water option and their caps are not painted.

OAT MILK REVIEW

While tasty, I’m not sure how oat milk became widely perceived as a healthy choice as oats are often high in glyphosate (a toxic pesticide). Exacerbating things further, inflammatory canola oil is a common ingredient and the high carbohydrate content and added sweeteners spike blood sugar.

Unsweetened coconut, macadamia, or hazelnut milk are better dairy-free alternatives.

• 1 cup unsweetened hazelnut or coconut milk: 1g or less

INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS: BANNED BUT BENEFICIAL

In 2022, the Department of Energy set a minimum efficiency standard of 45 lumens per watt for general service lamps. This effectively phased out the manufacture of most incandescent bulbs when it went into effect in 2023.

While perhaps this sounds like a good energy decision, the standard severely limits consumer choice leaving us primarily with LEDs and fluorescents as “modern light” options.

Incandescent bulbs give a warm, beautiful glow, but aesthetics aside, there are also serious health benefits. As listed in the article, The Hidden Sleep Destroyers Inside Your Home, some of the main differences between these bulbs include:

“Incandescents (these are old school bulbs):

· Smooth, continuous, balanced light spectrum

· Dominated by red and infrared light wavelengths

· Blue light is minimal, especially when dimmed

· Practically zero flicker, to where it doesn’t pose a problem

· Mimics the warmth of firelight → melatonin intact, nervous system calms

LED/Fluorescent (these are modern bulbs):

· Harsh spike in blue light, no red, infrared, or balanced light spectrum

· Flicker from the driver circuits → subtle stress signal with real effects

· Color temperature stays “cool” even when dimmed

· Tells your brain it’s broad daylight → melatonin suppressed, alertness prolonged”

A 2025 executive order calls for a review of energy-efficiency rules but unfortunately, this does not overturn the bulb regulations. While a lengthy federal process is required to reverse the rule, bills have been introduced to repeal existing standards.

Stock up while you can by scouring the internet for old product. Search terms like: incandescent A19 (standard bulb size) along with desired wattage. These treasures come with a scarcity markup, like this listing, but personally, I find it worth it given the benefits.
