La televisión y las películas reforzaban la fantasía: la vida familiar estadounidense siempre mostraba casas espaciosas y bellamente decoradas, con cocinas impecables que nunca parecían tener una pileta llena de platos. En Friends, seis jóvenes adultos en Manhattan pasaban una cantidad extraordinaria de tiempo tomando café en Central Perk, sentados en un cómodo sillón que, curiosamente, siempre parecía estar disponible cada vez que aparecían por ahí. Nunca parecían lidiar con las preocupaciones del trabajo, lo que nos dejaba preguntándonos cómo podían pagar un departamento en Nueva York. Incluso cuando la pobreza aparecía en la televisión estadounidense, generalmente era tratada como una complicación pasajera de la trama.

Crecer dentro de esa burbuja no significa creer que la pobreza no existe. Significa desarrollar una percepción distorsionada de qué tan cerca está de nuestra propia vida. La incómoda realidad se descubre más tarde: gran parte del mundo no se parece al mundo que nos mostraban. Como referencia, los estadounidenses se pusieron apopléjicos cuando la inflación recientemente superó el 3 % en un período completo de 12 meses. En Argentina, estaríamos encantados de tener una inflación así de baja en un solo mes, y probablemente sospecharíamos que alguien cometió un error y se olvidó de algún dígito.

Me encontré con esa realidad en Buenos Aires a través de una de las primeras películas argentinas que vi después de llegar acá: Elefante Blanco, protagonizada por Ricardo Darín. (Sí, otra vez Darín. A esta altura, es razonable preguntarse si en Argentina trabajan otros actores). Elefante Blanco me presentó un Buenos Aires que los turistas rara vez ven: una ciudad más allá de los cafés, las grandes avenidas, las fachadas europeas y los barrios prolijos que hacen que Buenos Aires sea tan fácil de idealizar.

Y fue inquietante, no porque la pobreza fuera algo que nunca hubiera visto o de lo que nunca hubiera escuchado hablar, sino porque estaba viéndola no como una noticia que ocurría en algún lugar lejano, sino como parte de la ciudad en la que yo recién empezaba a construir una vida.

El Buenos Aires detrás de la postal

Los visitantes se enamoran de Buenos Aires por razones perfectamente comprensibles. Ven la elegancia de la vieja aristocracia de Recoleta, el mundo cuidadosamente diseñado del Palermo de moda, las calles residenciales arboladas y casi increíblemente tranquilas de Belgrano, y los rincones de Retiro que parecen hechos para Instagram. Se quedan tomando un café, recorren librerías y galerías, admiran las imponentes fachadas europeas y se van encantados con una ciudad que puede ser extraordinariamente hermosa, al menos en el Buenos Aires que se les muestra a la mayoría de los turistas.

Pero esa belleza también puede ocultar algo importante.

La desigualdad de la ciudad no está escondida en algún lugar más allá de los límites urbanos. En algunos lugares, se encuentra casi absurdamente cerca del Buenos Aires de las postales.

Quizás el ejemplo más claro sea Villa 31, justo detrás de la estación de trenes de Retiro. Retiro es una de las expresiones más imponentes del Buenos Aires de otra época: arquitectura ferroviaria monumental, edificios públicos elegantes, hoteles costosos y ese tipo de grandeza urbana que alguna vez proclamaba la confianza que Argentina tenía en su futuro. Sin embargo, basta con cruzar la estación para encontrarse con uno de los asentamientos informales más conocidos de la ciudad.

El contraste quizás sea más impactante cuando tomás un tren desde Retiro. A la izquierda, las elegantes torres de departamentos de Recoleta se elevan sobre la ciudad; a la derecha, Villa 31 se extiende en una densa maraña de casas de colores, pasillos estrechos y una desconcertante red de cables eléctricos tendidos por encima. Los dos mundos están separados por poco más que una vía de tren.

He tenido la oportunidad de entrar varias veces a Villa 31 mientras hacía trabajo voluntario. Siempre íbamos acompañados por un vecino que conocía el barrio, y había una regla que nunca se tomaba a la ligera: teníamos que salir antes de que oscureciera. Muchos amigos argentinos míos ni siquiera considerarían ir. Mi hermana, en cambio, sin duda elegiría visitar Villa 31 antes que recorrer las galerías de Palermo. Siempre ha cuestionado las líneas que la sociedad traza por nosotros, una cualidad que siempre he admirado en ella.

Lo que más me llamó la atención de Villa 31 no fue simplemente que fuera pobre, sino lo completamente desconectada que parecía del resto de la ciudad que la rodeaba. Fue la rapidez con la que el barrio se volvía algo cotidiano una vez que estabas adentro. La gente seguía con su vida. Los chicos jugaban. Las familias trabajaban, conversaban y hacían las compras. Muchas de las casas estaban pintadas de colores vivos, y la infraestructura improvisada tenía su propio y extraño carácter visual. Incluso los pequeños papelitos que anunciaban “masajes”—un descarado guiño a la prostitución—estaban notablemente ausentes. En Buenos Aires, estos anuncios tan vulgares parecen reproducirse durante la noche, pegados en los postes de luz y cubriendo los enormes contenedores comunitarios de residuos que bordean las calles. Siempre me ha parecido profundamente degradante que en una ciudad se anuncie la venta de sexo con tanta naturalidad en la vía pública, como si la explotación que hay detrás de esos papelitos se hubiera convertido en una parte aceptada de la vida cotidiana.

Adentrarme en Villa 31 complicó mi manera de pensar sobre la pobreza. Ya no era una categoría abstracta. Era un barrio.

Y eso es precisamente lo que Elefante Blanco nos invita a ver.

El edificio que le dio su nombre a la película

El título hace referencia a un lugar real en Villa Lugano, en el sur de Buenos Aires: una enorme estructura de hormigón sin terminar que originalmente estaba destinada a convertirse en uno de los hospitales más grandes de Sudamérica.

La construcción comenzó en la década de 1930, cuando Argentina todavía tenía la confianza y los recursos necesarios para imaginar grandes proyectos públicos a una escala monumental. Pero el hospital nunca se terminó. Los cambios políticos, las crisis económicas y las prioridades que fueron cambiando terminaron frenando el proyecto, dejando atrás una enorme estructura esquelética de hormigón armado.

Durante décadas, el edificio inconcluso se alzó sobre una de las zonas más pobres de la ciudad. Con el tiempo, los argentinos terminaron llamándolo Elefante Blanco, en referencia a algo costoso y ambicioso que consume enormes recursos sin cumplir con el propósito para el que fue concebido.

El nombre resultó ser extraordinariamente apropiado. El edificio se convirtió en algo más que un hospital abandonado. En una zona marcada por la pobreza, su presencia en ruinas era un recordatorio cotidiano de una sociedad que había descuidado a quienes se suponía que debía proteger: un monumento físico a la distancia entre lo que un país promete y lo que finalmente cumple.

Ese es el mundo al que nos lleva la película.

Un barrio, no una estadística

Elefante Blanco transcurre en gran medida dentro de una villa porteña, un asentamiento informal que los angloparlantes podrían llamar slum o shantytown, aunque ninguna de las dos palabras realmente refleja la complejidad de estas comunidades.

Desde afuera, estos barrios pueden parecer caóticos: pasillos estrechos, casas construidas de manera progresiva, infraestructura improvisada y cables eléctricos colgando por encima. Pero desde adentro, son barrios. La gente se conoce. La vida sigue con toda su normalidad: los chicos crecen, las familias celebran cuando un hijo se recibe, la gente se enamora, discute con sus vecinos y se preocupa por el futuro.

Y, sin embargo, es fácil que esas vidas comunes desaparezcan de nuestra mirada. La pobreza tiene la tendencia a convertir a las personas en estadísticas. Hablamos de tasas de desempleo, índices de criminalidad, déficit habitacional y niveles de ingresos, y con el tiempo los seres humanos terminan desapareciendo debajo de los números.

La película se resiste a esa tentación. Sus habitantes no son presentados simplemente como personas pobres. Son presentados como personas que, entre muchas otras cosas, son pobres.

Parece una distinción pequeña. No lo es.

Mucho más que una película sobre la pobreza

A primera vista, Elefante Blanco parece una película sobre la pobreza. Y ciertamente lo es, pero esa descripción deja afuera gran parte de lo que la hace tan atrapante. El tema más profundo es lo que ocurre cuando el gobierno, la policía, las iglesias, las organizaciones benéficas y las buenas intenciones individuales chocan con problemas que se han acumulado durante generaciones.

En el centro de la historia hay dos sacerdotes que se han dedicado por completo a la comunidad. No aparecen como salvadores heroicos que llegan con un plan para solucionar todo. Saben que no pueden hacerlo. Su trabajo es mucho menos glamoroso: estar presentes, escuchar, ayudar, negociar, visitar a los enfermos, lidiar con las adicciones, apoyar a las familias y tratar de evitar que los jóvenes sean arrastrados por la violencia que los rodea.

Y al día siguiente, volver a hacerlo.

Esa es una de las ideas más poderosas de la película. A veces, hacer un trabajo significativo no consiste en solucionar un problema. A veces consiste en negarse a abandonar a las personas simplemente porque el problema es demasiado grande para poder solucionarlo.

Fe sin ilusiones

La manera en que la película aborda la fe es igualmente interesante. La religión no aparece como un conjunto de respuestas fáciles. Los sacerdotes se frustran, se enojan y se agotan. Se cuestionan a sí mismos y entre ellos. Son imperfectos. Cometen errores y, en ocasiones, se preguntan si lo que hacen realmente sirve de algo.

Y, sin embargo, continúan.

Su trabajo refleja la tradición de los curas villeros: sacerdotes católicos que eligen vivir y ejercer su ministerio entre algunas de las comunidades más pobres de Argentina en lugar de limitarse a visitarlas. Su labor va mucho más allá de predicar. Bautizan niños, visitan a los enfermos, consuelan a familias en duelo, ayudan a jóvenes que luchan contra las adicciones, median en conflictos e intentan construir relaciones dentro de comunidades donde las instituciones suelen ser vistas con desconfianza.

Se comparta o no su fe, es difícil no reconocer el valor de semejante perseverancia.

Violencia sin villanos fáciles

Otra de las virtudes de Elefante Blanco es que se niega a dividir el mundo de manera sencilla entre buenos y malos.

Hay delincuentes, narcotraficantes, funcionarios corruptos y enfrentamientos violentos. Pero la película no convierte a sus villanos en caricaturas. Tampoco pretende que todos los atrapados dentro del sistema sean igualmente responsables de lo que sucede.

Los jóvenes pueden verse arrastrados hacia el delito porque las oportunidades legítimas son escasas. Los policías trabajan dentro de sistemas que también tienen profundas fallas y, en ocasiones, enfrentan la poderosa tentación de la corrupción: hacer la vista gorda ante actividades delictivas o, más seriamente, participar en ellas puede ofrecer mucho más dinero que un sueldo honesto. Los políticos hacen promesas que son más fáciles de anunciar que de cumplir. Quienes trabajan en el ámbito religioso descubren que la buena voluntad no siempre alcanza.

Nada de esto justifica la conducta delictiva. Simplemente reconoce que los seres humanos rara vez actúan aislados de las circunstancias que los rodean.

La vida real, incómodamente, casi siempre es más complicada que una obra de buenos y malos.

La ciudad al lado de la ciudad

Vivir en Buenos Aires me ha hecho cada vez más consciente de lo cerca que pueden estar físicamente estos mundos diferentes.

Un turista puede pasar su tiempo acá comiendo algunos de los mejores cortes de carne del planeta, tachando de su lista los lugares que quiere conocer y recorriendo los parques y plazas de una ciudad cuya grandeza algo marchita todavía conserva su encanto. Nada de eso es falso. Buenos Aires realmente es hermosa, y su patrimonio arquitectónico es extraordinario.

Pero es una visión incompleta.

Detrás de la estación de Retiro está Villa 31. En otras partes de Buenos Aires hay otras villas y barrios que enfrentan la pobreza, una infraestructura deficiente y la violencia. Pero la desigualdad no termina en los límites de la ciudad. Hacia el sur y el sudoeste, adentrándose en la provincia, el paisaje económico vuelve a cambiar, con extensos suburbios de clase trabajadora y comunidades donde la infraestructura y las oportunidades pueden ser muy diferentes de las que encuentran los visitantes en la capital. Viajando más al norte, hacia provincias como Jujuy y Salta, las desigualdades se vuelven aún más marcadas. En algunas comunidades rurales e indígenas, el acceso confiable al agua dentro del hogar sigue siendo un problema serio; en el Noroeste en general, más de uno de cada cinco hogares no tenía agua dentro de la vivienda, según datos del censo. Estos lugares tampoco son otro país. Son parte de Argentina. La incómoda verdad es que el Buenos Aires que ven la mayoría de los visitantes es apenas una pequeña y prolija capa de un país mucho más grande y considerablemente más complejo.

Esa cercanía puede resultar incómoda porque hace que la desigualdad sea mucho más difícil de mantener a una distancia intelectual segura. No hace falta viajar a las afueras de una megaciudad en algún lugar de Asia o África para encontrarse con un nivel de vida radicalmente diferente. A veces, simplemente hay que cruzar una vía de tren.

Y quizás esa sea una de las razones por las que Elefante Blanco se quedó conmigo. La película se convierte en una puerta de entrada a una pregunta mucho más amplia: ¿qué sucede cuando la versión hermosa de un país oculta las vidas que se viven justo fuera de cuadro?

Por qué importa Elefante Blanco

Sería fácil describir Elefante Blanco como una película sobre la desigualdad. Sería correcto, pero incompleto. En el fondo, la película habla de la dignidad.

Los habitantes de la villa no son víctimas pasivas esperando que alguien venga a rescatarlos. Trabajan, se ríen, discuten, crían a sus hijos, se enamoran, cometen errores y lloran a sus muertos. La pobreza forma parte de sus circunstancias, pero no es su identidad.

Esa distinción importa mucho más allá de Buenos Aires.

Es sorprendentemente fácil hablar de la pobreza cuando los pobres permanecen en el anonimato. Se vuelve considerablemente más difícil cuando conocemos sus nombres, vemos sus casas y reconocemos las rutinas cotidianas de sus vidas.

Quizás ese sea el mayor logro de la película. No nos pide simplemente que sintamos lástima por la gente. Nos pide que la veamos.

Y ver a las personas con claridad suele ser bastante más exigente que sentir lástima por ellas.

Para mí, eso es lo que Elefante Blanco me reveló sobre Buenos Aires. La ciudad de la que me había enamorado seguía estando ahí: los cafés, la arquitectura, las grandes avenidas, las librerías y esas increíbles fachadas europeas. Pero había otro Buenos Aires junto a ese, uno que no podía reducirse a una atracción turística ni a una estadística desafortunada.

Cuanto más tiempo paso acá, más me doy cuenta de que para entender Argentina hay que mirar ambos.

La belleza es real.

Las dificultades también.

Y a veces las historias que más nos revelan algo comienzan donde termina la postal.

Television and movies reinforced the fantasy: American home life always showed spacious, beautifully decorated homes with spotless kitchens that never seemed to have a sink full of dishes. On Friends, six young adults in Manhattan spent an extraordinary amount of time drinking coffee at Central Perk—on a plush sofa that, remarkably, always seemed to be available whenever they wandered in. They never seemed to deal with the anxieties of work, leaving us to wonder how they could afford an apartment in New York. Even when poverty appeared on American television, it was usually treated as a temporary plot complication.

Growing up inside that bubble doesn’t mean believing that poverty doesn’t exist. It means developing a distorted sense of how close it is to your own life. The uncomfortable realization comes later: much of the world does not look like the world we were shown. For perspective, Americans became apoplectic when inflation recently rose more than 3% over an entire 12-month period. In Argentina, we’d be thrilled to have inflation that low in a single month—and probably suspicious that someone had made a mistake and missed a digit.

I encountered that realization in Buenos Aires through one of the first Argentine films I watched after arriving here: Elefante Blanco (White Elephant), starring Ricardo Darín. (Yes, Darín again. At this point, you may reasonably wonder if Argentina employs other actors.) Elefante Blanco introduced me to a Buenos Aires that tourists rarely see—a city beyond the cafés, grand avenues, European façades, and polished neighborhoods that make Buenos Aires so easy to romanticize.

And it was unsettling, not because poverty was something I had never heard of, but because I was seeing it not as a news story happening somewhere else, but as part of the city in which I was beginning to build a life.

The Buenos Aires Behind the Postcard

Visitors fall in love with Buenos Aires for understandable reasons. They see the old-money elegance of Recoleta, the carefully curated world of trendy Palermo, the leafy, almost improbably peaceful residential streets of Belgrano, and the effortlessly Instagrammable corners of Retiro. They linger over coffee, wander through bookstores and galleries, admire grand European façades, and come away enchanted by a city that can be extraordinarily beautiful—at least in the Buenos Aires that most tourists are shown.

But that beauty can also obscure something important.

The city’s inequality isn’t hidden somewhere beyond the urban fringe. In places, it sits almost absurdly close to the postcard version of Buenos Aires.

Perhaps the clearest example is Villa 31, immediately behind Retiro railway station. Retiro is one of the grandest expressions of the Buenos Aires of another era: monumental railway architecture, elegant public buildings, expensive hotels and the sort of urban grandeur that once proclaimed Argentina’s confidence in its future. Step beyond the station, however, and you encounter one of the city’s most famous informal settlements.

The contrast is perhaps most striking when you take a train from Retiro. On the left, the sleek apartment towers of Recoleta rise above the city; on the right, Villa 31 unfolds in a dense jumble of brightly painted homes, narrow passages and a bewildering web of electrical cables strung overhead. The two worlds are separated by little more than a railway line.

I have had the opportunity to enter Villa 31 several times while doing volunteer work. We were always accompanied by a resident who knew the neighborhood, and there was one rule that was never treated casually: we needed to be out before dark. Many Argentine friends of mine would never consider going there at all. My sister, on the other hand, would most certainly choose a visit to Villa 31 over the galleries of Palermo without hesitation. She has always challenged the lines society draws for us—a quality I have always admired in her.

What struck me most about Villa 31 was not simply that it was poor, but how completely disconnected it seemed from the city surrounding it. It was how quickly the neighborhood became ordinary once you were inside it. People were going about their lives. Children were playing. Families were working and talking and shopping. The houses were often painted in vivid colors, and the improvised infrastructure had its own strange visual character. Even the little scraps of paper advertising “massages”—a shameless wink at prostitution—were conspicuously absent. In Buenos Aires, these crude advertisements seem to reproduce overnight, pasted onto lampposts and plastered across the huge communal waste containers that line the streets. I have always found something deeply degrading about a city where the sale of sex is advertised so casually in public, as though the exploitation behind those scraps of paper has become an accepted part of everyday life.

Venturing into Villa 31 complicated the way I thought about poverty. It was no longer an abstract category. It was a neighborhood.

And that is precisely what Elefante Blanco asks us to see.

The Building That Gave the Film Its Name

The title refers to a real place in Villa Lugano, in the south of Buenos Aires: an enormous unfinished concrete structure that was originally intended to become one of South America’s largest hospitals.

Construction began in the 1930s when Argentina still possessed the confidence—and the resources—to imagine monumental public projects on a grand scale. But the hospital was never completed. Political changes, economic crises and shifting priorities gradually brought the project to a halt, leaving behind a vast skeletal structure of reinforced concrete.

For decades, the unfinished building loomed over one of the city’s poorest areas. Argentines eventually gave it the name Elefante Blanco, or “white elephant,” referring to something expensive and ambitious that consumes enormous resources without fulfilling its intended purpose.

The name proved remarkably appropriate. The building became more than an abandoned hospital. In an area rife with poverty, its crumbling presence stood as a daily reminder of a society that had neglected those it was supposed to protect—a physical monument to the distance between what a country promises and what it ultimately delivers.

That is the world into which the film takes us.

A Neighborhood, Not a Statistic

Elefante Blanco unfolds largely within a Buenos Aires villa—an informal settlement that English speakers might call a slum or shantytown, although neither word really captures the complexity of these communities.

From the outside, such neighborhoods appear chaotic: narrow passageways, houses constructed incrementally, improvised infrastructure, and electrical wires dangling overhead. But from the inside, they are neighborhoods. People know one another. Life goes on in all its very ordinary ways: children grow up, families celebrate when a son or daughter graduates, people fall in love, quarrel with their neighbors, and worry about the future.

And yet, it is easy for those ordinary lives to disappear from view. Poverty has a tendency to turn people into statistics. We talk about unemployment rates, crime rates, housing deficits, and income levels, and eventually the human beings disappear beneath the numbers.

The film resists that temptation. Its residents aren’t presented simply as poor people. They are presented as people who happen to be poor.

That sounds like a small distinction. It isn’t.

More Than a Film About Poverty

At first glance Elefante Blanco looks like a film about poverty. It certainly is, but that description misses much of what makes it compelling. The deeper subject is what happens when government, police, churches, charities and individual good intentions collide with problems that have been accumulating for generations.

At the center are two priests who have devoted themselves to the community. They aren’t portrayed as heroic saviors who arrive with a plan to fix everything. They know they can’t. Their work is much less glamorous: showing up, listening, helping, negotiating, visiting the sick, dealing with addiction, supporting families and trying to keep young people from being swallowed by the violence around them.

And then doing it again the next day.

That is one of the film’s most powerful ideas. Sometimes meaningful work isn’t about solving a problem. Sometimes it is about refusing to abandon people simply because the problem is too large to solve.

Faith Without Illusions

The film’s treatment of faith is equally interesting. This isn’t religion presented as a collection of easy answers. The priests become frustrated, angry and exhausted. They question themselves and each other. They are flawed. They make mistakes and occasionally wonder if what they are doing is making any difference at all.

Yet they continue.

Their work reflects the real-life tradition of the curas villeros—Catholic priests who choose to live and minister among Argentina’s poorest communities rather than simply visiting them. Their work extends far beyond preaching. They baptize children, visit the sick, comfort grieving families, help young people struggling with addiction, mediate disputes and attempt to build relationships within communities where institutions are often viewed with suspicion.

Whether one shares their faith or not, there is something difficult to dismiss about that kind of persistence.

Violence Without Simple Villains

Another strength of Elefante Blanco is its refusal to divide the world neatly between good people and bad people.

There are criminals, drug traffickers, corrupt officials and violent confrontations. But the film doesn’t turn its villains into cartoons. Nor does it pretend that everyone caught up in the system is equally responsible for what happens.

Young people can be drawn into crime because legitimate opportunities are scarce. Police officers work inside systems that are themselves deeply flawed, sometimes facing the powerful temptation of corruption: turning a blind eye to criminal activity—or, more seriously, participating in it—can offer far more money than an honest salary. Politicians make promises that are easier to announce than to fulfill. Religious workers discover that goodwill isn’t always enough.

None of this excuses criminal behavior. It simply acknowledges that human beings rarely operate in isolation from the circumstances surrounding them.

Real life, inconveniently, is almost always more complicated than a morality play.

The City Beside the City

Living in Buenos Aires has made me increasingly aware of how physically close these different worlds can be.

A tourist can spend their time here eating some of the best beef on the planet, ticking off the sights on their itinerary, and wandering through the parks and plazas of a city whose faded grandeur still manages to charm. None of that is false. Buenos Aires really is beautiful, and its architectural heritage is extraordinary.

But it is incomplete.

Behind Retiro station is Villa 31. In other parts of Buenos Aires are other villas and neighborhoods confronting poverty, inadequate infrastructure and violence. But the disparity doesn't end at the city limits. Stretch south and southwest into the provincia and the economic landscape changes again, with sprawling working-class suburbs and communities where infrastructure and opportunity can be dramatically different from what visitors encounter in the capital. Travel farther north into provinces such as Jujuy and Salta and the disparities become more pronounced still. In some rural and Indigenous communities, reliable access to water inside the home remains a serious problem; in the broader Northwest, more than one in five households lacked water inside the dwelling according to census data. These places aren't another country, either. They are part of Argentina. The uncomfortable truth is that the Buenos Aires most visitors see is only one small, polished layer of a much larger and considerably more complicated country.

That proximity can be uncomfortable because it makes inequality harder to keep at a safe intellectual distance. You don’t have to travel to the outskirts of a megacity somewhere in Asia or Africa to encounter a radically different standard of living. Sometimes you simply have to cross a railway line.

And perhaps that is one reason Elefante Blanco stayed with me. The film becomes a doorway into a much larger question: what happens when the beautiful version of a country obscures the lives being lived just outside the frame?

Why Elefante Blanco Matters

It would be easy to describe Elefante Blanco as a film about inequality. That would be accurate, but incomplete. At its heart, the film is about dignity.

The residents of the villa aren’t passive victims waiting for someone to rescue them. They work, laugh, argue, raise children, fall in love, make mistakes and mourn their dead. Their poverty is part of their circumstances, but it isn’t their identity.

That distinction matters far beyond Buenos Aires.

Poverty is remarkably easy to discuss when the poor remain anonymous. It becomes considerably harder when we know their names, see their homes and recognize the ordinary routines of their lives.

That may be the film’s greatest achievement. It doesn’t ask us simply to feel sorry for people. It asks us to see them.

And seeing people clearly is often considerably more demanding than feeling sorry for them.

For me, that is what Elefante Blanco revealed about Buenos Aires. The city I had fallen in love with was still there—the cafés, the architecture, the grand avenues, the bookstores and the astonishing European façades. But there was another Buenos Aires alongside it, one that couldn’t be reduced to a tourist attraction or an unfortunate statistic.

The more time I spend here, the more I realize that understanding Argentina requires looking at both.

The beauty is real.

So is the hardship.

And sometimes the most revealing stories begin where the postcard ends.

A Winston Churchill se le atribuye con frecuencia la frase: «La historia será amable conmigo, porque tengo la intención de escribirla».

Aunque durante mucho tiempo se ha debatido si Churchill realmente pronunció esas palabras exactas, la cita refleja una verdad perdurable: la historia rara vez es un simple registro de acontecimientos. Está moldeada por quienes la escriben, quienes la preservan y quienes deciden cómo quieren ser recordados.

Pocas figuras del siglo XX ilustran esto mejor que Eva Perón.

Para millones de argentinos, «Evita» fue la defensora compasiva de los pobres, la mujer que llevó esperanza a los sectores olvidados de la sociedad y que llegó a ser conocida como la Jefa Espiritual de la Nación. Para otros, fue una ambiciosa actriz convertida en política, cuya imagen pública cuidadosamente construida terminó siendo inseparable del ascenso del peronismo. Más de setenta años después de su muerte, las opiniones sobre ella siguen profundamente divididas.

Sin embargo, independientemente de lo que uno piense sobre la política de Eva Perón, pocos pueden negar que la historia que rodeó su muerte —y el extraordinario viaje que emprendería su cuerpo después— constituye uno de los capítulos más extraordinarios de la historia moderna. Tratamientos médicos secretos, intrigas políticas, uno de los funerales públicos más multitudinarios que se hayan visto y un cuerpo embalsamado que desaparecería durante dieciséis años antes de reaparecer en otro continente forman parte de una historia tan extraordinaria que casi desafía la credulidad.

Sin embargo, todo comenzó no con un drama político, sino con una emergencia médica aparentemente común.

La enfermedad detrás de la sonrisa pública

En enero de 1950, durante una aparición pública, Eva Perón, de treinta años, se desmayó repentinamente. Los médicos inicialmente diagnosticaron apendicitis y fue sometida a una cirugía para extirparle el apéndice. Aunque la operación fue considerada exitosa, quienes estaban cerca de ella notaron que nunca llegó a recuperarse por completo.

Su salud se deterioró cada vez más. Se debilitaba, se cansaba con facilidad, sufría frecuentes mareos, dolores persistentes y fuertes hemorragias vaginales. Públicamente, estos síntomas se atribuían al agotamiento provocado por su incansable ritmo de trabajo. En privado, sin embargo, los médicos de Eva llegaron a una conclusión mucho más preocupante.

Su ginecólogo sospechaba que tenía cáncer de cuello uterino.

En lugar de revelar inmediatamente el diagnóstico, Juan Perón decidió proteger a su esposa de conocer la verdadera gravedad de su estado. Si su decisión estuvo motivada por amor, paternalismo, cálculo político o una combinación de los tres sigue siendo objeto de debate histórico. Lo que está claro es que Eva continuó haciendo apariciones públicas mientras su salud se deterioraba inexorablemente.

Para 1951, mientras Juan Perón se preparaba para su campaña de reelección, el estado de Eva ya era imposible de ocultar.

Oficialmente, ingresó en el hospital para someterse a lo que fue presentado como una intervención ginecológica de rutina. En realidad, la operación no tuvo nada de rutinaria.

Sin hacerlo público, Perón gestionó en secreto la llegada a Buenos Aires de uno de los principales especialistas en cáncer de Estados Unidos, el Dr. George T. Pack, del Memorial Hospital de Nueva York. Su llegada se mantuvo con tal discreción que muchos argentinos no supieron de su participación hasta décadas después.

Solo después de que Eva hubiera sido sometida a anestesia general, el Dr. Pack ingresó al quirófano.

Lo que encontró fue devastador.

El cáncer había avanzado mucho más allá de su sitio de origen. En lugar de tratarse de una enfermedad localizada, se había extendido ampliamente por su organismo, dejando pocas esperanzas de curación. Los cirujanos hicieron todo lo que pudieron, pero la medicina de comienzos de la década de 1950 ofrecía muy pocos tratamientos eficaces para el cáncer de cuello uterino avanzado.

En cuanto terminó la operación, el Dr. Pack fue acompañado discretamente fuera del hospital y trasladado directamente al aeropuerto. Antes de que Eva recuperara el conocimiento, él ya estaba a bordo de un vuelo de regreso a Nueva York.

Durante un tiempo, la propia Eva permaneció ajena a la verdadera gravedad de su diagnóstico.

Juan Perón entendía que su esposa era mucho más que la Primera Dama de la Argentina. Se había convertido en el corazón emocional de su movimiento político. Su presencia despertaba una enorme lealtad entre los trabajadores, los sindicatos y los sectores más pobres. En un momento crucial de su campaña, hacer pública la noticia de que estaba muriendo podía tener profundas consecuencias políticas.

Por eso, la imagen cuidadosamente construida de fortaleza continuaría —aunque solo por un tiempo más.

Una nación se vuelca hacia Evita

A medida que la salud de Eva se deterioraba visiblemente, la preocupación pública crecía rápidamente. En Buenos Aires comenzaron a circular rumores de que la Primera Dama estaba gravemente enferma, aunque el gobierno continuaba ofreciendo declaraciones tranquilizadoras.

Paradójicamente, la incertidumbre no hizo más que fortalecer el afecto del público hacia ella.

A mediados de 1951, los sindicatos y los seguidores del peronismo comenzaron a pedir que Eva Perón integrara la fórmula presidencial como candidata a vicepresidenta. Era una propuesta sin precedentes. Nunca antes una mujer argentina había despertado un apoyo político de semejante magnitud.

El momento culminante llegó el 22 de agosto de 1951, cuando una multitud estimada en más de un millón de personas se congregó a lo largo de la Avenida 9 de Julio, en Buenos Aires, para pedirle a Evita que aceptara la candidatura.

La magnitud de la manifestación dejó al país atónito.

Para Juan Perón, el acontecimiento reveló algo que pocos políticos desean descubrir: la popularidad de su esposa había llegado a rivalizar —y quizá incluso a superar— la suya.

Pero debajo de los aplausos, las pancartas y los cánticos se escondía una dolorosa realidad.

Eva ya se estaba muriendo.

Físicamente debilitada y cada vez más dependiente de la medicación simplemente para poder presentarse en público, sabía que no podía soportar las exigencias de un cargo nacional. Después de varios días de una presión pública cada vez mayor, pronunció lo que se conocería como La Renuncia, rechazando formalmente la candidatura, aunque reafirmando su apoyo incondicional a su esposo y pidiendo al pueblo argentino que hiciera lo mismo.

Sería uno de los últimos grandes momentos públicos de su vida.

Los meses siguientes transformarían a Eva Perón de una figura política en algo mucho más grande: un símbolo nacional cuya muerte sumiría a la Argentina en el duelo y cuyo cuerpo se convertiría en el centro de uno de los viajes más extraordinarios de la historia.

Segunda parte: La muerte de un ícono

A comienzos de 1952, el estado de Eva Perón ya era imposible de ocultar.

La mujer que alguna vez había recorrido incansablemente el país, hablado ante multitudes y trabajado durante largas horas en favor de los pobres se había convertido en una figura peligrosamente delgada. El cáncer se había extendido por todo su cuerpo y hasta los analgésicos más potentes solo ofrecían un alivio temporal. Sin embargo, a pesar de su sufrimiento, seguía decidida a estar junto a su esposo cada vez que las circunstancias lo exigían.

Juan Perón obtuvo una contundente victoria en las elecciones presidenciales de noviembre de 1951 y asumió su segundo mandato el 4 de junio de 1952.

Eva estaba decidida a estar a su lado.

El costo físico fue enorme.

Incapaz de sostenerse por mucho tiempo, le colocaron un armazón de acero especialmente construido debajo de la ropa. Oculto bajo un elegante abrigo de piel, el dispositivo le permitía mantenerse erguida durante el largo desfile ceremonial por las calles de Buenos Aires. Para las multitudes que se alineaban a lo largo de las avenidas, parecía digna y serena. Pocos se daban cuenta de que la mujer que sonreía y saludaba desde el automóvil descubierto pesaba menos de treinta y seis kilos y dependía de una estructura metálica simplemente para poder mantenerse de pie.

Las imágenes de aquel día se convertirían en algunas de las últimas fotografías públicas de Evita.

A pesar del rápido deterioro de su salud, nunca perdió de vista lo que más le importaba.

Aunque la historia recuerda a Eva Perón como Primera Dama de la Argentina, actriz, personalidad de la radio, militante política y fundadora de la Fundación Eva Perón, esos títulos por sí solos no explican la extraordinaria devoción que despertó. Más que cualquier cargo oficial que haya ocupado, fue el afecto de los argentinos comunes lo que definió su legado.

Para millones, no era simplemente la esposa del Presidente. Era la mujer que escuchaba a los trabajadores de las fábricas, abrazaba a los pobres, visitaba hospitales y distribuía ayuda entre familias que sentían que habían sido olvidadas durante mucho tiempo.

Fue durante este período que el Congreso le otorgó formalmente el título que quedaría para siempre asociado a su nombre: «Jefa Espiritual de la Nación».

Años más tarde, Andrew Lloyd Webber captaría esta extraordinaria devoción popular en el musical Evita al plantear una pregunta memorable:

«¿Por qué intentar gobernar un país cuando podés convertirte en santa?»

La frase es teatral, pero refleja una realidad histórica extraordinaria. Para innumerables argentinos, Eva Perón se había convertido en algo que trascendía la política.

Se había convertido en objeto de una reverencia casi religiosa.

La noche del 26 de julio de 1952, a las 20:25, Eva Perón murió a los treinta y tres años.

En cuestión de minutos, las emisoras de radio de toda la Argentina interrumpieron su programación habitual para transmitir un solemne anuncio:

«A las 20:25 de esta noche, Eva Perón entró en la inmortalidad».

La elección de las palabras fue deliberada. El gobierno no se limitó a anunciar su muerte. Declaró el nacimiento de una leyenda.

Una nación de luto

La reacción fue inmediata y abrumadora.

Se suspendieron las actividades oficiales del gobierno mientras la Argentina entraba en un período de duelo nacional. Las campanas de las iglesias repicaron en todo el país. Las banderas fueron izadas a media asta. Los comercios cerraron sus puertas, las fábricas quedaron en silencio y miles de personas abandonaron lo que estaban haciendo para dirigirse hacia la Casa Rosada.

En poco tiempo, las multitudes habían alcanzado una dimensión que Buenos Aires jamás había experimentado.

La gente llenó las calles de los alrededores durante varias cuadras en todas las direcciones. Muchos llevaban flores, velas o mensajes escritos a mano. Otros simplemente permanecían en silencio, incapaces de creer que la mujer a la que llamaban cariñosamente Evita ya no estaba.

Las escenas no tardaron en volverse caóticas.

A medida que las enormes multitudes avanzaban para intentar obtener aunque fuera un fugaz vistazo de su féretro, varias personas murieron aplastadas. Más de dos mil personas necesitaron atención médica después de sufrir heridas provocadas por la presión incesante de la multitud.

Y, sin embargo, el flujo de dolientes nunca se detuvo.

Durante días, miles y miles de personas esperaron pacientemente en filas que se extendían por toda la ciudad. Algunos permanecieron más de veinticuatro horas de pie, simplemente para poder pasar unos pocos segundos junto a su féretro.

El dolor fue algo que la Argentina moderna no había visto hasta entonces.

Llegaban flores más rápido de lo que podían ser acomodadas. Las florerías de todo Buenos Aires agotaron rápidamente sus existencias, mientras nuevos cargamentos llegaban a la capital desde distintos puntos del país y del extranjero. Calles enteras quedaron bordeadas por enormes muros de ofrendas florales, llenando el aire invernal con su fragancia.

Más tarde, algunos visitantes describirían partes de la ciudad como enormes corredores cubiertos de flores, más que como calles urbanas.

Para sus seguidores, la muerte de Eva representaba la pérdida de una protectora y defensora que había dedicado su vida a las clases trabajadoras de la Argentina. Para otros, independientemente de sus opiniones políticas, la magnitud del duelo público revelaba algo imposible de negar: Eva Perón se había convertido en una de las mujeres más influyentes de la historia del país.

Una pregunta que todavía divide a los historiadores

Como ocurre con muchos aspectos de la relación entre Juan y Eva Perón, las circunstancias que rodearon la enfermedad de Eva siguen dando lugar a especulaciones.

Algunos historiadores han sostenido que la decisión de Juan Perón de ocultar el diagnóstico estuvo motivada principalmente por una necesidad política. Otros creen que realmente esperaba evitarle a su esposa la carga emocional de saber que padecía una enfermedad terminal.

También se ha debatido considerablemente el propio cáncer de cuello uterino de Eva.

Dado que la primera esposa de Juan Perón, Aurelia Tizón, también murió de cáncer de cuello uterino después de nueve años de matrimonio, algunos autores han sugerido que ambas mujeres podrían haber contraído el virus del papiloma humano (VPH) —la principal causa de la mayoría de los casos de cáncer de cuello uterino— a través del propio Perón. Aunque esta teoría se ha repetido ampliamente, no existe evidencia médica que permita confirmarla o refutarla, por lo que continúa siendo una especulación histórica y no un hecho comprobado.

Sea cual fuere la verdad, ambas mujeres murieron trágicamente jóvenes, y la coincidencia ha seguido fascinando a los historiadores durante décadas.

Mientras tanto, Juan Perón enfrentaba una decisión que definiría para siempre el legado de Eva.

Estaba decidido a que la Argentina jamás la olvidara.

Para lograrlo, recurrió a uno de los principales expertos del mundo en la preservación de los muertos.

El extraordinario viaje del cuerpo de Eva Perón estaba a punto de comenzar.

Tercera parte: El cuerpo que no quería descansar

Para Juan Perón, la muerte de Eva marcó el final de un matrimonio.

Para millones de argentinos, marcó el comienzo de una leyenda.

Si Evita se había convertido en un símbolo durante su vida, Perón estaba decidido a que su imagen perdurara mucho después de su muerte. Casi de inmediato, comenzaron los planes para preservar su cuerpo de manera permanente, de modo que las generaciones futuras pudieran seguir rindiéndole homenaje.

Para llevar adelante esta tarea extraordinaria, Perón recurrió a uno de los principales especialistas mundiales en anatomía.

El arte de preservar a los muertos

El hombre elegido para la tarea fue el Dr. Pedro Ara, un reconocido médico y profesor de anatomía español que se había formado en Viena antes de desarrollar una destacada carrera médica en Madrid. Ara había adquirido una reputación internacional por sus extraordinarias técnicas de embalsamamiento, que buscaban no simplemente conservar un cuerpo, sino recrear la apariencia de un sueño apacible.

Él no se refería a su trabajo como embalsamamiento, sino como «el arte de la muerte».

En lugar de utilizar métodos convencionales de conservación, Ara desarrolló un proceso minucioso que reemplazaba los fluidos del cuerpo por glicerina y otros agentes conservantes. El resultado fue extraordinario. La piel conservaba su apariencia natural, los rasgos del rostro permanecían suaves y los tejidos del cuerpo podían preservarse indefinidamente sin adquirir la apariencia rígida y sin vida que suele asociarse con el embalsamamiento.

Ara comenzó su trabajo casi inmediatamente después de la muerte de Eva.

Durante los meses siguientes, dedicó incontables horas a la meticulosa conservación de su cuerpo, documentando cuidadosamente cada etapa del proceso. Su objetivo no era simplemente prepararla para el entierro, sino crear lo que él describía como un cuerpo «incorruptible»: una figura que pareciera casi indistinguible de alguien que duerme plácidamente.

Los visitantes que posteriormente contemplaron el cuerpo de Eva solían comentar su asombrosa apariencia realista.

A muchos les resultaba difícil creer que estaban mirando a alguien que había muerto.

Una peregrinación como ninguna otra

Una vez finalizado el trabajo del Dr. Ara, el cuerpo embalsamado de Eva fue expuesto al público en la sede de la Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT), la poderosa organización sindical que durante mucho tiempo había sido una de las principales aliadas políticas de Perón.

La respuesta fue abrumadora.

Mucho antes del amanecer de cada mañana, los dolientes comenzaban a reunirse frente al edificio. Cuando salía el sol, las filas ya se extendían a lo largo de decenas de cuadras. Familias llegaban desde todos los rincones de la Argentina, muchas de ellas esperando durante horas simplemente para pasar unos pocos minutos frente al féretro cubierto con una urna de vidrio.

En el interior, el silencio había reemplazado al ruido de las calles.

El proyecto contemplaba un memorial colosal que superaría en altura a la Estatua de la Libertad. En su centro, el cuerpo perfectamente conservado de Eva permanecería expuesto de manera permanente, permitiendo que las generaciones futuras rindieran homenaje a quien muchos consideraban la encarnación de la justicia social.

Sin embargo, el monumento nunca llegaría a construirse.

La historia tenía otros planes.

Revolución y desaparición

El 16 de septiembre de 1955, menos de tres años después de la muerte de Eva, el gobierno de Juan Perón fue derrocado mediante un golpe militar conocido como la Revolución Libertadora.

Perón huyó de la Argentina y partió al exilio.

En medio del caos que rodeó su partida, una posesión extraordinaria quedó atrás.

Eva.

El nuevo gobierno militar veía al peronismo no simplemente como un movimiento político derrotado, sino como una ideología que debía ser eliminada de la vida pública. Se retiraron retratos, se desmantelaron monumentos, se prohibieron discursos y hasta pronunciar los nombres de Juan o Eva Perón en determinados espacios públicos podía resultar políticamente peligroso.

Pero quedaba un problema.

¿Qué hacer con el cuerpo?

Los funcionarios militares comprendieron rápidamente que los restos embalsamados de Eva se habían convertido en mucho más que un cadáver. Eran un poderoso símbolo político, capaz de mantener viva la lealtad de los seguidores del peronismo. Dejar el cuerpo expuesto al público implicaba el riesgo de convertirlo en un lugar permanente de peregrinación.

Pero enterrarlo públicamente también suponía riesgos similares.

En cambio, las autoridades tomaron una decisión extraordinaria.

Eva Perón simplemente desaparecería.

Dieciséis años sin una tumba

Durante años, casi nadie supo dónde había ido a parar el cuerpo de Eva.

Los rumores se multiplicaron rápidamente.

Algunos creían que había sido enterrado en secreto debajo de edificios gubernamentales. Otros insistían en que había sido escondido en cuarteles militares, trasladado al extranjero o incluso destruido por completo.

La verdad siguió siendo uno de los grandes misterios de la Argentina.

A puertas cerradas, los militares trasladaron secretamente el cuerpo de un lugar a otro, intentando impedir que se convirtiera en un punto de encuentro para la resistencia peronista. Solo un puñado de funcionarios sabía dónde se encontraba en cada momento.

Finalmente, después de años de secreto, el gobierno organizó el traslado del cuerpo de Eva fuera de la Argentina.

Utilizando documentación falsa, el féretro fue trasladado a Italia.

Allí, en el Cementerio Monumental de Milán, Eva Perón fue enterrada bajo una identidad falsa.

La lápida llevaba un nombre que no significaba prácticamente nada para quienes pasaban frente a ella:

María Maggi de Magistris.

Durante dieciséis años, una de las mujeres más reconocibles de la historia argentina permaneció oculta bajo el nombre de otra mujer, a miles de kilómetros del país cuyos habitantes alguna vez habían llenado sus calles por millones para llorar su muerte.

La mayoría de los argentinos no tenía idea de dónde descansaba.

Muchos dudaban de que alguien llegara a saberlo algún día.

Sin embargo, la historia tiene una manera curiosa de recuperar las historias inconclusas.

A comienzos de la década de 1970, Juan Perón —todavía exiliado— había descubierto un secreto que pocos creían posible.

Había descubierto dónde estaba enterrada Eva.

El extraordinario viaje de su cuerpo estaba a punto de tomar otro giro inesperado.

Cuarta parte: De vuelta a casa

En 1971, después de dieciséis años de secreto, Juan Perón finalmente descubrió qué había sido del cuerpo de Eva.

Todavía exiliado en Madrid, organizó discretamente el regreso de sus restos a España. El traslado se realizó con absoluta discreción, poniendo fin a uno de los episodios más extraordinarios de la historia argentina moderna.

Cuando el féretro llegó, Perón recurrió nuevamente al Dr. Pedro Ara para que examinara el cuerpo que había preservado casi dos décadas antes.

Aunque los restos de Eva seguían notablemente bien conservados, había señales de que no habían atravesado indemnes aquel largo y secreto viaje. Según relatos de personas involucradas, el cuerpo presentaba evidencias de los daños sufridos durante los años en que permaneció oculto y fue trasladado en repetidas ocasiones. Entre las lesiones descritas se encontraban una marcada hendidura en la nariz, moretones en el rostro y el pecho y marcas en la espalda. Si todos estos relatos son completamente precisos sigue siendo motivo de debate, pero existen pocas dudas de que el cuerpo había sufrido durante los años en custodia militar.

El siguiente capítulo de la historia es quizá el más surrealista de todos.

Según numerosos relatos históricos, el cuerpo embalsamado de Eva fue colocado en un féretro abierto dentro de la residencia de Perón en Madrid. Allí permaneció durante un período prolongado, convirtiéndose casi en un elemento permanente de la casa. Se dice que la tercera esposa de Perón, Isabel Martínez de Perón, cuidaba meticulosamente el cuerpo, le cepillaba el cabello y se aseguraba de que la habitación permaneciera impecable.

La imagen resulta difícil de asimilar: una de las mujeres más famosas del siglo XX, preservada después de su muerte, yaciendo en una residencia privada mientras el hombre que alguna vez había gobernado la Argentina planeaba su regreso político.

Una vez más, la realidad parecía más extraña que la ficción.

El viaje final

En 1973, después de dieciocho años de exilio, Juan Perón regresó a la Argentina.

Su regreso convocó a multitudes enormes y, más tarde ese mismo año, fue elegido Presidente por tercera vez. Isabel ocupó el cargo de vicepresidenta, convirtiéndolos en el primer matrimonio en ejercer simultáneamente los dos cargos más altos de la Argentina.

Sin embargo, el triunfo político duró poco.

Menos de un año después, el 1 de julio de 1974, Juan Perón murió en ejercicio de la Presidencia a los setenta y ocho años.

Durante un breve período, el cuerpo de Eva volvió a reunirse públicamente con el de su esposo, cumpliendo una visión que muchos peronistas consideraban que se les había negado durante mucho tiempo.

Finalmente, sin embargo, el gobierno decidió que Eva debía descansar por separado.

Today, many of us live with the quiet assumption that justice is either blind, painfully slow, or simply unlikely to arrive within our lifetimes. We watch investigations drag on for years. We see powerful people evade consequences. We grow accustomed to the idea that justice may eventually happen—but probably not soon, perhaps not at all.

Argentina’s new democracy faced a very different choice. The men being brought to trial were not distant figures from a forgotten past, nor were they safely beyond the reach of justice. They were alive, present, and standing trial as the former rulers of the country. The military they had commanded was still there, its influence had not disappeared, and neither had its capacity to threaten the fragile new democracy.

And yet, in 1985, Argentina put them before civilian judges.

That was Argentina in 1985.

A Democracy Still Finding Its Feet

When Argentina returned to democracy in December 1983, the celebrations were genuine. So were the anxieties.

The military dictatorship that had ruled the country since 1976 collapsed after Argentina’s defeat in the 1982 Malvinas (Falklands) War. Raúl Alfonsín became president, but the armed forces had not simply disappeared because a civilian government had taken office. The barracks were still there, the officers were still there, and they still had influence.

Many Argentines feared that investigating the dictatorship too aggressively might provoke the military into intervening again. It was not an unreasonable fear. Argentina had experienced several coups during the twentieth century, and civilian governments had been overthrown with depressing regularity. For many people, democracy did not yet feel like a permanent feature of national life. It felt more like something that might, once again, be taken away.

Alfonsín was therefore facing an agonizing choice. If he ignored the crimes, the new democracy would begin by abandoning justice. If he pursued them too aggressively, he risked provoking the very institution that had repeatedly overthrown civilian governments.

There was no guidebook for this. There was no precedent that could reassure him that a newly restored democracy could safely prosecute the men who had so recently controlled the country. And there was certainly no guarantee that the military would simply accept the verdict.

Crimes Without Names

During what Argentines call the Guerra Sucia, or “Dirty War,” thousands of people disappeared. The phrase sounds almost bureaucratic. It isn’t.

People were taken from their homes, their workplaces, universities, and the streets. Families were given no arrest warrant and often no explanation. They might not even know whether the person they loved was alive. They searched hospitals, police stations, military bases, and government offices, only to be told again and again that no record existed.

Some prisoners were held in secret detention centers. Many were tortured. Many were murdered. Pregnant women gave birth in captivity. In some cases, their babies were taken and raised under different identities while their mothers disappeared.

For years, much of what happened existed mainly in the form of testimony whispered between people who were afraid of being overheard. The dictatorship had left surprisingly little official paperwork, but it had left a great many grieving families.

And that created one of the enormous challenges facing the new democracy: how do you prosecute crimes that were designed to leave no evidence?

Building a Case Against Power

One of Alfonsín’s first acts was to establish the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons, known by its Spanish acronym, CONADEP. Its job was, in essence, to find out what had happened.

The commission interviewed survivors, collected testimony from relatives, documented secret detention centers, and assembled thousands of pages of evidence. The result was the landmark report Nunca Más—Never Again—a title that would become closely associated with Argentina’s attempt to confront its recent past.

But gathering the evidence was only the first step. Someone still had to take it to court. Someone had to stand before judges and accuse men who had only recently commanded the country.

That responsibility fell to a small team of prosecutors led by Julio César Strassera and his young deputy, Luis Moreno Ocampo. Neither had an army. Neither commanded a political machine. Neither could guarantee that the people they were prosecuting would accept the authority of the court.

What they had was evidence, a legal system that was still finding its feet, and the conviction that the law had to mean something even when the defendants had once seemed untouchable.

The Weight of Fear

Preparing the case was nothing like preparing an ordinary criminal prosecution. The witnesses were still afraid. Some had survived torture only a few years earlier. Others worried that speaking publicly might put their families at risk.

Investigators had to work through thousands of documents while trying to reconstruct events that had often been deliberately concealed. The prosecution faced pressure from every direction. Anonymous threats became part of daily life. Some people argued that the country needed to forget the past and move on. Others insisted that the military should never be subjected to civilian justice.

And behind all of this was the obvious question: what would happen if the military refused to accept the process?

The trial was not taking place in a country that had fully recovered from dictatorship. The trial was part of the process by which Argentina was trying to become a democracy.

Even the most basic questions were difficult. How do you prove a murder when there is no body? How do you establish responsibility across a chain of command? How do you ask a witness to describe the worst experience of his or her life in a courtroom full of strangers?

There were no easy answers. The case moved forward because people kept doing the work anyway.

Inside the Courtroom

When the trial began in April 1985, the world was watching. The defendants were not minor officials who had quietly disappeared from public life. They were former commanders of the military juntas that had ruled Argentina.

For months, survivors testified about kidnappings, torture, secret prisons, disappearances, and lives that had been destroyed. The courtroom was, of course, a place where a legal case was being heard. But it became something else as well: people whose voices had been silenced for years were finally speaking publicly.

Some of the testimony was almost unbearable. Parents described searching for children who never came home. Former prisoners spoke about being blindfolded, tortured, and kept in a state of constant uncertainty. Relatives carried photographs because they had no graves to visit.

The generals largely argued that they had been defending the country against terrorism. The prosecution’s position was more fundamental: however serious the threat facing a country might be, a government could not simply place itself above the law.

Behind the legal arguments was a question that went beyond the individual defendants. Could a democracy hold its former rulers accountable? And could it do so while those former rulers still had friends, supporters, influence, and connections within the institution they had once commanded?

“Nunca Más”

In September 1985, prosecutor Julio César Strassera delivered one of the most memorable closing arguments in Argentine history. He ended with two words: “Nunca más.”

Never again.

The phrase was aimed at more than the defendants. It was aimed at the country.

Later that year, several senior members of the military juntas were convicted and sentenced to prison, while others were acquitted. The outcome was far from the end of the story. The years that followed brought pardons, reversals, renewed prosecutions, and more legal battles. The process of holding those responsible accountable would continue for decades.

But the trial had nevertheless crossed an important line.

Argentina had shown that civilian courts could judge men who had only recently seemed beyond the reach of the law. Not military tribunals. Not revolutionary justice. Not revenge. Civilian courts.

And it had done so just two years after the dictatorship ended.

That timing matters.

We often imagine justice as something that happens after the danger has passed—after the perpetrators have lost their power, after the political situation has stabilized, after enough time has passed for everyone to agree that the past must finally be confronted.

Argentina did not have that luxury.

The country attempted to hold its former rulers accountable while the wounds were still open and the military still possessed considerable influence. That did not make the process easy. It made the decision to begin it extraordinary.

It was one of the first times in modern history that a country had prosecuted its own former dictators through its ordinary judicial system. The example mattered far beyond Argentina. Human rights advocates around the world followed the trial, and other countries emerging from dictatorship would later look to Argentina as evidence that accountability was possible, even under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

Justice did not erase the grief. Nothing could.

But the trial did establish something important. The testimony of the victims had entered the official record. The crimes of the dictatorship could no longer be dismissed as rumor. The disappeared would not be allowed to disappear from history as well.

Why This Story Still Matters

Walk through Buenos Aires today and, every so often, you’ll see a small bronze plaque set into the pavement outside an ordinary building. It bears the name of someone who lived or worked there before disappearing during the dictatorship. Most people walk past. Some stop. The plaques remain.

They are small, easy to miss, and quietly insistent: an ordinary person lived here. An ordinary person worked here. This person existed.

The Trial of the Juntas belongs to that same effort to remember. It was not only about punishment. It was also about refusing to let silence have the last word.

History tends to celebrate dramatic victories. This was, in many ways, a quieter achievement. Lawyers, judges, investigators, witnesses, and ordinary citizens decided that the rule of law was worth defending even when doing so was frightening and politically dangerous.

And perhaps that is what makes the story so remarkable to me.

One of the reasons I love exploring Argentina’s history is that its most important stories often become more interesting, not less, the further you look beneath the surface. A political event turns out to be a story about families. A legal case turns out to be a story about fear. A national tragedy becomes a story about people trying to decide what they can live with—and what they can no longer remain silent about.

Argentina did not wait for justice to become convenient. It did not wait for the perpetrators to become harmless. It did not wait for everyone to agree that the time was right.

It simply began, although not at all simply.

That decision helped redefine modern Argentina. And perhaps that is the part of this story I find hardest to forget: democracy was not restored simply because a military government left office. It had to be built, defended, and tested. In 1985, Argentina tested it in one of the most difficult ways imaginable—by asking its own courts to judge the men who had so recently ruled the country.

For a young democracy still finding its feet, that was an extraordinary thing to ask.

And an even more extraordinary thing to accomplish.

Those are the stories that stay with me long after I close the history books.

Even its most functional structures seem to carry an excess of intention, as though utility alone was never quite enough. At the turn of the twentieth century, as the city expanded at extraordinary speed, architecture became something more than shelter or infrastructure. It became a declaration—of wealth, of confidence, and occasionally, of imagination so large it bordered on myth.

Three buildings capture that moment better than any others.

One began as a reservoir and ended as a palace.

One was designed as a literary map of the afterlife.

And one—if legend is to be believed—was built out of social humiliation turned into concrete.

Palacio de Aguas Corrientes — The Palace That Hid a City’s Thirst

Av. Córdoba 1950, Buenos Aires

When the city acquired the land for what would become the Palacio de Aguas Corrientes in the late 1870s, the surrounding area was still semi-rural—an open expanse on the western edge of the expanding city. The spread of plague and other epidemics had already prompted wealthy families to leave the older, densely settled neighborhoods of San Telmo for cleaner, more spacious areas farther west, including what is now Balvanera.

Buenos Aires was confronting a crisis of its own making. Rapid growth had outpaced sanitation, while cholera and yellow fever exposed the limits of the city’s infrastructure. Clean water was no longer a luxury. It was survival.

So the city commissioned something extraordinary: a pumping and storage facility of industrial scale.

But by the time construction began in the 1880s, the city had already caught up with it. Stately residences rose along newly paved avenues. Schools appeared. Businesses followed. Land that had recently been peripheral was becoming part of an emerging urban elite corridor.

And so the building changed character before it even existed.

Rather than a purely utilitarian structure, it was reimagined as something closer to civic theatre. The final façade—completed in the 1890s—was an explosion of ornamentation: glazed ceramics from Belgium and England, decorative ironwork, and a symmetry that deliberately echoed Parisian institutional architecture.

Inside, however, the building offers a delightful surprise. You might expect crystal chandeliers, Baroque gold-framed mirrors, and marble floors; instead, the grandeur gives way to the building's stripped-down guts—massive iron tanks and a forest of pipes designed to carry millions of liters of water through the city. It remains one of Buenos Aires's most striking paradoxes: a building that dressed necessity in splendor, as if even something as mundane as quenching a city's thirst deserved a palace.

Palacio Barolo — A Building Written in Verse

Avenida de Mayo 1370, Buenos Aires

On Avenida de Mayo, where European-inspired façades line one of Buenos Aires’ most symbolic boulevards, Palacio Barolo rises like an architectural thesis written in stone.

Commissioned in 1919 by Italian entrepreneur Luis Barolo and designed by architect Mario Palanti, the building was conceived at a moment when Buenos Aires saw itself not as a colonial outpost of Europe, but as its intellectual equal—or at least its ambitious heir.

Palanti’s design drew explicitly from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Not as decoration, but as structure.

The building is divided into three conceptual realms:

• Hell occupies the lower floors, where heavy masonry and darker tones dominate.

• Purgatory rises through the central offices, where repetition and rhythm suggest ascent.

• Paradise crowns the structure, culminating in a dome and lighthouse.

At its peak, a rotating beacon was installed, originally intended to be visible across the Río de la Plata, symbolically guiding Dante—and by extension, humanity—toward enlightenment.

Even the building’s height was not arbitrary. It was designed using numerological references tied to Dante’s cosmology, making Barolo less a commercial building than a metaphysical diagram.

For decades, it housed offices, law firms, and commercial tenants, yet it never quite shed its literary ambition. The top floor once contained a bar and observation space, where visitors could look out across Buenos Aires and, at least in theory, contemplate the journey from inferno to illumination.

Few buildings in the city ask so much of the imagination.

Fewer still reward it so richly.

Kavanagh Building — The Vertical Legend of Retiro

Florida 1065, Buenos Aires

By 1936, Buenos Aires no longer needed to prove it could imitate Europe. It had begun to compete with it.

The Kavanagh Building, completed that year, was Latin America’s first true skyscraper—a 120-metre slab of reinforced concrete rising sharply above the aristocratic gardens of Retiro.

It was designed by architects Gregorio Sánchez, Ernesto Lagos, and Luis María de la Torre. Its lines were strict, modernist, almost severe. No ornament. No mythological carvings. No historical references embedded in its façade. It was, in appearance, a declaration of efficiency.

But cities rarely allow architecture to remain purely architectural.

The story that attached itself to the building belongs not to engineers, but to society gossip and enduring legend.

Corina Kavanagh was a wealthy woman from outside the traditional Buenos Aires elite. According to the most persistent version of the story, her daughter—or in some tellings, her own romantic ambitions—was rejected by the aristocratic Anchorena family, one of the city’s most established and socially exclusive dynasties.

The reason, as legend has it, was simple and cutting: she was not considered “good enough.”

What followed became one of Buenos Aires’ great urban myths.

In response, Kavanagh commissioned what was then the tallest building in Latin America, positioning it with almost theatrical precision across from the Anchorena Palace. It did not, as the legend sometimes suggests, block the view of the church they attended. What it did block was something perhaps even more precious: the glorious green expanse and stately trees of Plaza San Martín beyond it. And, as skyscrapers tend to do, the Kavanagh cast the street into heavy shadow. Visiting the legendary location today, it almost feels like stumbling into a forgotten alley—an oddly intimate remnant of a feud that once played out on one of Buenos Aires’s grandest stages.

Whether this was deliberate architectural revenge or retrospective storytelling is still debated.

What is not debated is speed.

The building rose with astonishing rapidity for its era—completed in just over a year—an engineering feat made possible by modern construction techniques and considerable financial force.

By the time it was finished, it had permanently altered the skyline of Buenos Aires and, according to the legend, the private view of at least one prominent family.

The building is now protected as a historic monument.

The story, meanwhile, remains unprotected—and very much alive.

A City Built as Argument

Taken together, these three buildings form something like a portrait of Buenos Aires at its most self-inventive.

The Water Palace disguises infrastructure as grandeur.

Palacio Barolo turns literature into geometry.

And The Kavanagh Building turns modernity into myth, while quietly proving that “never mess with a woman scorned” is advice worth heeding—especially when she has the money to build a skyscraper.

And the city sprawls out among them, teaching its lessons in stone, steel, and ornament: that necessity can be beautiful, architecture can carry a grudge, and buildings can become repositories of a city’s ideas, ambitions, and memories.

Buenos Aires has never been a city that builds simply what it needs. It builds what it believes it deserves.

And sometimes, what it wishes to be remembered for.

There’s always another story waiting just beyond the next corner.

And then there are the smaller stories.

They are easier to overlook. They rarely make it into the familiar photographs or the standard accounts of the period. Yet sometimes one of these stories tells you something about a country that the larger history cannot quite capture.

One of those stories belongs to an eighteen-year-old Argentine named Egidio Molina.

His story begins in March 1978, two years after the military junta seized power and announced what it called the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional. The name had the dry, bureaucratic quality that governments sometimes give to things they would rather make sound orderly. What was actually happening was considerably more serious. The new regime was trying to impose its idea of order on a society it considered dangerously disobedient and subversive.

Political parties and Congress had been shut down. Trade unions were restricted. Strikes were prohibited. The press was censored, part of a history of political censorship in Argentina that stretched back decades. People suspected of having left-wing political sympathies—or even of being associated with people who did—could be arrested, tortured or simply disappear.

The military government described its campaign as a struggle against subversion. The term was broad enough to be useful. Argentina had indeed been experiencing violent political conflict, including attacks by left-wing guerrilla organizations such as the Montoneros and the People’s Revolutionary Army, or ERP. But the state’s response reached well beyond armed groups. Students, unionists, journalists, intellectuals, activists and ordinary people suspected of being politically unreliable could all attract the attention of the security apparatus.

The boundaries of what constituted a threat became remarkably elastic.

You did not necessarily have to be carrying a weapon. Sometimes it was enough to refuse to behave in the way the authorities thought a good Argentine should behave.

That is where Egidio’s story becomes interesting.

The Wrong Kind of Argentine

Egidio was born in Argentina on September 1, 1959. In March 1978, shortly after his eighteenth birthday, he was called up for compulsory military service and sent about 800 kilometres southwest of Buenos Aires to the 181st Command Communications Battalion in Bahía Blanca.

There was nothing unusual about that part. Thousands of young Argentine men were doing their military service.

The problem began when Egidio arrived.

He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. His religious convictions included conscientious objection to military service and the bearing of weapons. He explained to the military authorities that he could not put on the uniform or take part in military training.

The army did not see this as a matter of religious conscience.

It saw disobedience.

During morning formation, the officer in command, Captain Landa, ordered Egidio three times to put on the uniform.

Three times, Egidio refused.

What happened next seems extraordinary now. The eighteen-year-old who had arrived to perform compulsory military service was taken into custody.

He had not been convicted of a crime. He had not even been tried.

Instead, he was placed in rigorous pretrial detention.

He would remain under military custody for the next two years without being tried or convicted.

The first three months were spent in a tiny cell, roughly two meters by one and a half meters. There were four such cells, without doors, opening onto a small area containing a metal hatch over a septic chamber through which the building’s sewage passed.

The smell was constant.

So was the deprivation.

There were days when Egidio was refused access to the bathroom. On those occasions, he had to lift the metal cover and use the septic chamber itself.

Sometimes there was no food. When a soldier did bring him something, it could be little more than leftover broth.

He was not permitted to bathe, shave or wash his clothes. Eventually he became infested with lice.

Then winter arrived.

Bahía Blanca can be cold enough in winter without spending it in a cell wearing clothes intended for summer. Egidio had arrived in canvas shoes, lightweight trousers and a short-sleeved shirt. As autumn gave way to winter, water began to seep through the floor and walls.

During the day, he had to stand.

At nine each evening, a mattress was brought to him.

At six the next morning, it was taken away.

After three months, his trousers had become so worn that they tore. His skin had gone pale from the lack of sunlight. His beard had grown unchecked. He lost enough weight for his ribs to become visible.

When he was eventually allowed to wash, he says he barely recognized the person looking back at him.

Then came the night he remembered most vividly.

The Coldest Night

It was winter, and at about ten o’clock one evening an officer took Egidio from his cell. He was ordered to put on the military uniform and perform the rapid movements used in military drill.

He refused.

He explained that he considered himself a civilian and that his religious conscience prevented him from wearing the uniform or taking part in military exercises.

The officer gave him another choice, if it can be called a choice.

If Egidio would not perform the exercises, he was to stand outside all night.

Two armed soldiers were placed on either side of him. They were instructed to shoot him if he moved.

So he stood there.

The wind swept through his summer clothes. The cold became progressively harder to bear. By about three in the morning, he remembers it becoming almost unbearable.

Still, he did not move.

He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, just enough to keep himself standing.

At eight the next morning, the guard changed. The new non-commissioned officer saw the young man standing outside and asked what he was doing there.

Egidio explained.

The order came to take him back to his cell.

That was when he discovered what the cold had done.

He could not walk. His knees and groin had become so cold that he could not take a step. The soldiers had to help him back.

There was another small problem. It was already after six, which meant that the mattresses and blankets had been removed.

But something had happened while he was outside.

Some of the other prisoners had hidden a sleeping bag.

They had done it secretly because soldiers who concealed mattresses or blankets could themselves be punished.

They put Egidio inside and told him to sleep. They would keep watch.

Within minutes, he began to warm up.

He fell asleep.

At about one in the afternoon, the other prisoners woke him because food had arrived. They gave him their military mess container, a marmita, and told him not to get up.

Eat, they told him.

Then sleep again.

So he did.

For Egidio, the sleeping bag became an answer to prayer. For the men around him, it was a small act of solidarity in a place where even something as simple as hiding a blanket could carry consequences.

That detail haunts me.

Dictatorships are often described through their institutions: armies, police forces, intelligence agencies, prisons. It is easy to forget that the people living inside those systems were still people. Some obeyed. Some participated. Some were afraid. And sometimes, quietly, someone helped someone else.

What Exactly Was the Threat?

Looking back nearly fifty years later, it is difficult not to ask what the authorities thought they were confronting in an eighteen-year-old who refused to wear a uniform.

The answer is partly found in the dictatorship’s understanding of order.

The junta was determined to impose national unity and eliminate what it called subversion. Its principal enemies were political: guerrillas, left-wing activists, unionists, students, intellectuals, journalists and others suspected of opposing the military project.

But the machinery of control did not stop at political organizations. The government was suspicious of independent organizations and ideas that did not fit comfortably within the society it wanted to create.

Jehovah’s Witnesses presented an awkward case.

Their religious beliefs did not allow them to participate in military service, salute the flag or take part in patriotic ceremonies, including the singing of the national anthem.

To people who regarded military discipline, patriotic education and national symbols as essential parts of social order, that refusal could look like something more than religious conviction.

The irony was that Jehovah’s Witnesses were not a revolutionary organization. They did not seek to overthrow the government. Their position was one of political neutrality.

But neutrality can become uncomfortable in a political system that expects visible demonstrations of loyalty.

In 1976, the Argentine government banned the religious activities of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Kingdom Halls were closed, religious literature was confiscated, meetings and preaching were prohibited, and the organization’s offices were shut down.

The contradiction was difficult to miss. On February 17, 1978, La Nación had proudly described Argentina as a country whose laws and people had a long tradition of religious tolerance, noting that the Constitution permitted other religions to “freely practice their religion.” Yet while La Nación was celebrating Argentina’s tradition of religious tolerance, the Supreme Court had upheld the government’s ban on Jehovah’s Witnesses.

On paper, religious freedom was a constitutional principle. In practice, it depended rather heavily on which religion you happened to belong to.

The consequences reached into schools and workplaces as well. Children were expelled from schools or prevented from enrolling because they would not participate in patriotic ceremonies. Some were denied examinations. Adults faced discrimination at work. Homes were searched. Religious literature was confiscated. Young men who refused military service were imprisoned.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights investigated the situation and concluded in 1978 that Argentina had violated fundamental rights, including freedom of religion, education, association, personal security and protection against arbitrary arrest.

By then, hundreds of young Jehovah’s Witnesses had reportedly been imprisoned for conscientious objection.

Egidio was one of them.

His experience was therefore not simply the result of one difficult officer deciding to make an example of an eighteen-year-old. It belonged to a larger dispute over how much control a government should have over the conscience of its citizens.

When a Magazine Became an International Alarm Bell

The persecution did not remain entirely inside Argentina.

In September 1978, Awake!, a magazine published by the Witnesses, devoted several pages to the situation in Argentina under the provocative headline “Argentina: Champion of Freedom—Or of Religious Intolerance?” The article described the government’s restrictions on Jehovah’s Witnesses and drew international attention to their treatment.

Its international readership was encouraged to make its concerns known to Argentine authorities. Letters came from outside the country protesting the suppression of religious freedom and the treatment of imprisoned Witnesses.

Whatever one thinks about the organization itself, the campaign is an interesting part of the story. The Witnesses had an international publishing network, and they used it. What was happening to their members in Argentina was turned into an international issue rather than something to be dealt with quietly inside the country.

The questions raised by the campaign were not particularly complicated.

Could a government decide which citizens were allowed to worship? Could it determine what they could read, which meetings they could attend, where their children could study, or whether an eighteen-year-old could follow the dictates of his conscience?

Those questions mattered in Argentina because the government’s treatment of the Witnesses was taking place alongside something much darker.

The Larger Darkness

It is important not to blur these things together.

The persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses was not equivalent to the dictatorship’s systematic campaign against political opponents. The state’s terrorism was vastly broader and more lethal. Thousands of Argentines were kidnapped, tortured, murdered or disappeared. Hundreds of clandestine detention centres operated throughout the country. Families were torn apart, babies were taken from imprisoned mothers, and fear became part of everyday life.

The first military junta consisted of Army commander Jorge Rafael Videla, Navy commander Emilio Massera and Air Force commander Orlando Agosti. They represented the three armed forces that had seized power on March 24, 1976.

The regime remained in power until 1983.

Its repression was not the work of one man or even one institution. The armed forces, security services and intelligence apparatus were central to it, while civilian institutions, businesses, courts, media organizations and religious figures occupied different positions ranging from collaboration and accommodation to opposition and silence. Argentina’s reckoning with those years remains complicated partly because the dictatorship did not operate in isolation from the rest of society.

That context matters when we look at Egidio’s experience.

His story is not a miniature version of Argentina’s Dirty War. It is something more specific, and in some ways more ordinary: an example of what happens when political authority reaches into the everyday lives of people who have done nothing more threatening than insist on living according to their own convictions.

What they wear.

What they read.

Who they associate with.

Who they worship.

These things can seem trivial until someone with power tells you that you no longer have the right to decide them for yourself.

A Young Man and a Very Large State

Egidio eventually survived those two years.

He did not defeat the Argentine military. He did not bring down the junta. He did not become a famous dissident. His name and face have never appeared on a wall in protest.

What he did was much smaller. He refused to put on a uniform. He simply refused to surrender the most sacred part of himself.

His conscience.

It is tempting to dismiss that as insignificant when placed beside the enormous history of Argentina’s dictatorship. But the uniform is precisely what makes his story worth remembering.

For the military authorities, it represented obedience and belonging. For Egidio, wearing it would have meant violating his conscience.

That is where the story becomes larger than the uniform itself.

Egidio was eighteen years old when he went into military custody. Today, he is a quiet man. Nearly fifty years have passed, but some experiences do not pass with them. They leave a mark somewhere deeper than memory, in places that time cannot simply erase.

Certain facts are unavoidable. These events must also be understood within the context of a country in which roughly 90% of the population professed to be Catholic at the time. Egidio Molina’s refusal to put on a military uniform might have seemed like a simple act of defiance. In retrospect, however, it carries a much greater weight. Five years later, Argentina would put members of its military on trial for grave human-rights violations. What if Egidio had put on that uniform? We cannot know what role he would have played, but he could have found himself serving an institution whose actions increasingly came into conflict with the very conscience that had compelled him to refuse it. His decision did not change Argentina’s history, but it ensured that he would not have to wonder whether he had contributed to its darkest chapter. Tragically, many others did—and many of those responsible were never brought to justice.

We tend to talk about freedom in enormous terms: democracy, human rights, constitutional government, liberty. Those ideas matter, obviously. But eventually they have to mean something to an actual person standing in an actual room, or they remain abstractions.

Sometimes that person is a child who simply wants to attend school without being forced to take part in a ceremony.

Sometimes it is someone who wants to worship according to the dictates of their conscience.

And sometimes it is an eighteen-year-old in a military barracks who says, quietly yet repeatedly, “I cannot do this.”

That is what Egidio did.

On that freezing night in Bahía Blanca, he had no political influence, no newspaper, no lawyer standing beside him and no army behind him.

He had summer clothes, two armed guards and a conscience.

And he stood there.

Perhaps that is the part of his story worth carrying away.

Not that one young man somehow defeated a dictatorship. He didn’t.

The state remained overwhelmingly more powerful than he was.

But there are moments when power is measured differently. A government can control a person’s movements, his food, his clothing and even the temperature at which he spends the night. It cannot necessarily make him believe that obedience is right.

Egidio’s refusal did not change Argentina.

But it meant that, in one small corner of that country, at least one person decided that there was something the state could not have.

His conscience.

Y después están las historias más pequeñas.

Son más fáciles de pasar por alto. Rara vez aparecen en las fotografías conocidas o en los relatos habituales de ese período. Sin embargo, a veces una de estas historias puede decirte algo sobre un país que la historia más grande no alcanza a captar del todo.

Una de esas historias pertenece a un argentino de dieciocho años llamado Egidio Molina.

Su historia comienza en marzo de 1978, dos años después de que la junta militar tomara el poder y anunciara lo que llamó el Proceso de Reorganización Nacional. El nombre tenía ese tono seco y burocrático que los gobiernos a veces les dan a las cosas que prefieren presentar como ordenadas. Lo que realmente estaba ocurriendo era mucho más grave. El nuevo régimen intentaba imponer su propia idea de orden sobre una sociedad que consideraba peligrosamente desobediente y subversiva.

Los partidos políticos y el Congreso habían sido clausurados. Los sindicatos estaban restringidos. Las huelgas estaban prohibidas. La prensa estaba censurada, como parte de una historia de censura política en Argentina que se remontaba a décadas atrás. Las personas sospechadas de tener simpatías políticas de izquierda —o incluso de estar relacionadas con personas que las tuvieran— podían ser detenidas, torturadas o simplemente desaparecer.

El gobierno militar describía su campaña como una lucha contra la subversión. El término era lo suficientemente amplio como para resultar útil. Argentina efectivamente atravesaba un período de violencia política, incluidos los ataques de organizaciones guerrilleras de izquierda como Montoneros y el Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo, o ERP. Pero la respuesta del Estado fue mucho más allá de los grupos armados. Estudiantes, sindicalistas, periodistas, intelectuales, activistas y personas comunes sospechadas de ser políticamente poco confiables podían atraer la atención del aparato de seguridad.

Los límites de lo que podía considerarse una amenaza se volvieron extraordinariamente elásticos.

No necesariamente había que llevar un arma. A veces bastaba con negarse a comportarse de la manera en que las autoridades consideraban que debía comportarse un buen argentino.

Y ahí es donde la historia de Egidio se vuelve interesante.

El argentino equivocado

Egidio nació en Argentina el 1 de septiembre de 1959. En marzo de 1978, poco después de cumplir dieciocho años, fue convocado para realizar el servicio militar obligatorio y enviado a unos 800 kilómetros al sudoeste de Buenos Aires, al Batallón de Comunicaciones de Comando 181, en Bahía Blanca.

Hasta ahí no había nada fuera de lo común. Miles de jóvenes argentinos estaban haciendo el servicio militar.

El problema comenzó cuando Egidio llegó.

Era testigo de Jehová. Sus convicciones religiosas incluían la objeción de conciencia al servicio militar y al uso de armas. Explicó a las autoridades militares que no podía ponerse el uniforme ni participar en el entrenamiento militar.

El ejército no lo consideró una cuestión de conciencia religiosa.

Lo consideró desobediencia.

Durante la formación de la mañana, el oficial a cargo, el capitán Landa, le ordenó tres veces que se pusiera el uniforme.

Tres veces, Egidio se negó.

Lo que ocurrió después parece extraordinario hoy. El joven de dieciocho años que había llegado para cumplir con el servicio militar obligatorio fue detenido.

No había sido condenado por ningún delito. Ni siquiera había sido juzgado.

En cambio, fue puesto en rigurosa prisión preventiva.

Permanecería bajo custodia militar durante los siguientes dos años sin ser juzgado ni condenado.

Los primeros tres meses los pasó en una celda diminuta, de aproximadamente dos metros por un metro y medio. Había cuatro celdas de ese tipo, sin puertas, que daban a un pequeño espacio donde había una tapa metálica sobre una cámara séptica por la que pasaban las aguas servidas del edificio.

El olor era constante.

Y también lo era la privación.

Había días en que a Egidio no le permitían usar el baño. En esas ocasiones, tenía que levantar la tapa metálica y utilizar la propia cámara séptica.

A veces no había comida. Cuando algún soldado le llevaba algo, podía ser poco más que caldo sobrante.

No le permitían bañarse, afeitarse ni lavar su ropa. Finalmente, se llenó de piojos.

Entonces llegó el invierno.

Bahía Blanca puede ser bastante fría en invierno sin necesidad de pasar la estación encerrado en una celda con ropa pensada para el verano. Egidio había llegado con zapatillas de lona, pantalones livianos y una camisa de manga corta. A medida que el otoño daba paso al invierno, el agua comenzó a filtrarse por el piso y las paredes.

Durante el día, tenía que permanecer de pie.

A las nueve de la noche le llevaban un colchón.

A las seis de la mañana siguiente, se lo retiraban.

Después de tres meses, sus pantalones estaban tan gastados que se rompieron. Su piel se había vuelto pálida por la falta de luz solar. Su barba había crecido sin control. Había perdido tanto peso que se le marcaban las costillas.

Cuando finalmente le permitieron lavarse, cuenta que apenas reconocía a la persona que veía en el espejo.

Entonces llegó la noche que recordaría con mayor claridad.

La noche más fría

Era invierno y, alrededor de las diez de la noche, un oficial sacó a Egidio de su celda. Le ordenaron que se pusiera el uniforme militar y realizara los movimientos rápidos utilizados en la instrucción militar.

Se negó.

Explicó que se consideraba un civil y que su conciencia religiosa le impedía usar el uniforme o participar en ejercicios militares.

El oficial le dio otra opción, si es que se puede llamar opción.

Si Egidio no hacía los ejercicios, tendría que permanecer afuera toda la noche.

Colocaron dos soldados armados a cada lado de él. Les ordenaron que le dispararan si se movía.

Así que se quedó allí, de pie.

El viento atravesaba su ropa de verano. El frío se hacía cada vez más difícil de soportar. Alrededor de las tres de la mañana, recuerda que se volvió casi insoportable.

Aun así, no se movió.

Cambiaba el peso de un pie al otro, apenas lo suficiente para mantenerse de pie.

A las ocho de la mañana siguiente cambió la guardia. El nuevo suboficial vio al joven de pie afuera y le preguntó qué estaba haciendo allí.

Egidio se lo explicó.

La orden fue llevarlo de regreso a su celda.

Fue entonces cuando descubrió lo que el frío había hecho.

No podía caminar. Tenía las rodillas y la ingle tan frías que no podía dar un paso. Los soldados tuvieron que ayudarlo a regresar.

Había otro pequeño problema. Ya eran más de las seis, lo que significaba que habían retirado los colchones y las mantas.

Pero mientras él estaba afuera había ocurrido algo.

Algunos de los otros presos habían escondido una bolsa de dormir.

Lo habían hecho en secreto porque los soldados que escondían colchones o mantas podían ser castigados.

Metieron a Egidio dentro y le dijeron que durmiera. Ellos lo vigilarían.

En cuestión de minutos, comenzó a entrar en calor.

Se quedó dormido.

Alrededor de la una de la tarde, los otros presos lo despertaron porque había llegado la comida. Le dieron su propio recipiente militar, una marmita, y le dijeron que no se levantara.

Comé, le dijeron.

Y después volvé a dormir.

Y eso hizo.

Para Egidio, aquella bolsa de dormir se convirtió en una respuesta a sus oraciones. Para los hombres que lo rodeaban, fue un pequeño acto de solidaridad en un lugar donde incluso esconder una manta podía tener consecuencias.

Ese detalle se me quedó grabado.

Las dictaduras suelen describirse a través de sus instituciones: ejércitos, policías, servicios de inteligencia, cárceles. Es fácil olvidar que las personas que vivían dentro de esos sistemas seguían siendo personas. Algunas obedecían. Algunas participaban. Algunas tenían miedo. Y a veces, en silencio, alguien ayudaba a otra persona.

¿Cuál era exactamente la amenaza?

Mirando hacia atrás casi cincuenta años después, es difícil no preguntarse qué creían las autoridades que estaban enfrentando en un joven de dieciocho años que se negaba a ponerse un uniforme.

La respuesta se encuentra, en parte, en la idea de orden que tenía la dictadura.

La junta estaba decidida a imponer la unidad nacional y eliminar lo que llamaba subversión. Sus principales enemigos eran políticos: guerrilleros, activistas de izquierda, sindicalistas, estudiantes, intelectuales, periodistas y otras personas sospechadas de oponerse al proyecto militar.

Pero el aparato de control no terminaba en las organizaciones políticas. El gobierno desconfiaba de las organizaciones independientes y de las ideas que no encajaban cómodamente en la sociedad que quería construir.

Los testigos de Jehová presentaban un caso incómodo.

Sus creencias religiosas no les permitían participar del servicio militar, saludar a la bandera ni participar en ceremonias patrióticas, incluido el canto del himno nacional.

Para quienes consideraban la disciplina militar, la educación patriótica y los símbolos nacionales como elementos esenciales del orden social, esa negativa podía parecer algo más que una convicción religiosa.

La ironía era que los testigos de Jehová no eran una organización revolucionaria. No buscaban derrocar al gobierno. Su postura era de neutralidad política.

Pero la neutralidad puede resultar incómoda en un sistema político que espera demostraciones visibles de lealtad.

En 1976, el gobierno argentino prohibió las actividades religiosas de los testigos de Jehová. Se cerraron Salones del Reino, se confiscó literatura religiosa, se prohibieron las reuniones y la predicación, y se clausuraron las oficinas de la organización.

La contradicción era difícil de ignorar. El 17 de febrero de 1978, La Nación había descrito con orgullo a Argentina como un país cuyas leyes y cuyo pueblo tenían una larga tradición de tolerancia religiosa, señalando que la Constitución permitía a otras religiones “practicar libremente su religión”. Sin embargo, mientras La Nación celebraba la tradición argentina de tolerancia religiosa, la Corte Suprema había ratificado la prohibición del gobierno contra los testigos de Jehová.

En el papel, la libertad religiosa era un principio constitucional. En la práctica, dependía bastante de a qué religión pertenecieras.

Las consecuencias también llegaron a las escuelas y los lugares de trabajo. Algunos niños fueron expulsados de las escuelas o se les impidió inscribirse porque se negaban a participar en ceremonias patrióticas. A algunos se les negó el derecho a rendir exámenes. Los adultos enfrentaban discriminación laboral. Se registraban viviendas. Se confiscaba literatura religiosa. Los jóvenes que se negaban a realizar el servicio militar eran encarcelados.

La Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos investigó la situación y concluyó en 1978 que Argentina había violado derechos fundamentales, entre ellos la libertad religiosa, la educación, la asociación, la seguridad personal y la protección contra la detención arbitraria.

Para entonces, cientos de jóvenes testigos de Jehová habían sido encarcelados por objeción de conciencia.

Egidio era uno de ellos.

Su experiencia, por lo tanto, no fue simplemente el resultado de que un oficial difícil decidiera convertir a un joven de dieciocho años en un ejemplo. Formaba parte de una disputa mucho más amplia sobre cuánto control debía tener un gobierno sobre la conciencia de sus ciudadanos.

Cuando una revista se convirtió en una alarma internacional

La persecución no quedó completamente encerrada dentro de Argentina.

En septiembre de 1978, Awake!, una revista publicada por los testigos de Jehová, dedicó varias páginas a la situación en Argentina bajo el provocador título “Argentina: ¿Campeona de la libertad o de la intolerancia religiosa?”. El artículo describía las restricciones impuestas a los testigos de Jehová y llamaba la atención internacional sobre el trato que recibían.

Se alentó a sus lectores de todo el mundo a hacer llegar sus preocupaciones a las autoridades argentinas. Llegaron cartas desde el extranjero en protesta por la represión de la libertad religiosa y el trato dado a los testigos encarcelados.

Más allá de lo que uno pueda pensar de la organización, la campaña es una parte interesante de la historia. Los testigos tenían una red internacional de publicaciones y la utilizaron. Lo que estaba ocurriendo con sus miembros en Argentina se convirtió en un asunto internacional, en lugar de algo que debía resolverse discretamente dentro del país.

Las preguntas que planteaba la campaña no eran particularmente complicadas.

¿Podía un gobierno decidir qué ciudadanos tenían permitido adorar? ¿Podía determinar qué podían leer, a qué reuniones podían asistir, dónde podían estudiar sus hijos o si un joven de dieciocho años podía seguir los dictados de su conciencia?

Esas preguntas importaban en Argentina porque el trato que recibían los testigos de Jehová se producía al mismo tiempo que algo mucho más oscuro.

La oscuridad más grande

Es importante no confundir estas cosas.

La persecución de los testigos de Jehová no fue equivalente a la campaña sistemática de la dictadura contra sus opositores políticos. El terrorismo de Estado fue muchísimo más amplio y letal. Miles de argentinos fueron secuestrados, torturados, asesinados o desaparecidos. Cientos de centros clandestinos de detención funcionaron en todo el país. Familias fueron separadas, bebés fueron arrebatados a madres encarceladas y el miedo pasó a formar parte de la vida cotidiana.

La primera junta militar estuvo integrada por el comandante del Ejército Jorge Rafael Videla, el comandante de la Armada Emilio Massera y el comandante de la Fuerza Aérea Orlando Agosti. Representaban a las tres Fuerzas Armadas que habían tomado el poder el 24 de marzo de 1976.

El régimen permaneció en el poder hasta 1983.

Su represión no fue obra de un solo hombre ni siquiera de una sola institución. Las Fuerzas Armadas, los servicios de seguridad y el aparato de inteligencia fueron fundamentales, mientras que instituciones civiles, empresas, tribunales, medios de comunicación y figuras religiosas ocuparon distintas posiciones que iban desde la colaboración y la adaptación hasta la oposición y el silencio. La revisión que Argentina ha hecho de esos años sigue siendo compleja, en parte porque la dictadura no funcionó aislada del resto de la sociedad.

Ese contexto importa cuando miramos la experiencia de Egidio.

Su historia no es una versión en miniatura de la Guerra Sucia argentina. Es algo más específico y, en cierto sentido, más cotidiano: un ejemplo de lo que ocurre cuando el poder político se mete en la vida diaria de personas cuyo mayor “delito” ha sido insistir en vivir de acuerdo con sus propias convicciones.

Lo que visten.

Lo que cantan.

Lo que estudian.

Lo que leen.

Con quiénes se relacionan.

A quién adoran.

Estas cosas pueden parecer insignificantes hasta que alguien con poder te dice que ya no tenés derecho a decidirlas por vos mismo.

Un joven y un Estado enorme

Egidio finalmente sobrevivió esos dos años.

No derrotó al ejército argentino. No hizo caer a la junta. No se convirtió en un disidente famoso. Su nombre y su rostro nunca aparecieron en una pared de protesta.

Lo que hizo fue mucho más pequeño. Se negó a ponerse un uniforme. Simplemente se negó a entregar la parte más sagrada de sí mismo.

Su conciencia.

Es tentador considerar eso insignificante cuando se lo coloca junto a la enorme historia de la dictadura argentina. Pero el uniforme es precisamente lo que hace que valga la pena recordar su historia.

Para las autoridades militares, representaba obediencia y pertenencia. Para Egidio, ponérselo habría significado violar su conciencia.

Y ahí es donde la historia se vuelve más grande que el uniforme.

Egidio tenía dieciocho años cuando quedó bajo custodia militar. Hoy es un hombre tranquilo. Han pasado casi cincuenta años, pero hay experiencias que no desaparecen con el paso del tiempo. Dejan una marca en algún lugar más profundo que la memoria, en lugares que el tiempo no puede simplemente borrar.

Hay ciertos hechos que son inevitables. Estos acontecimientos también deben entenderse dentro del contexto de un país en el que, en aquel momento, aproximadamente el 90 % de la población se declaraba católica. La negativa de Egidio Molina a ponerse un uniforme militar podría haber parecido simplemente un acto de rebeldía. Sin embargo, vista en retrospectiva, adquiere un peso mucho mayor. Cinco años después, Argentina llevaría a miembros de sus fuerzas armadas a juicio por graves violaciones de los derechos humanos. ¿Qué habría pasado si Egidio se hubiera puesto aquel uniforme? No podemos saber qué papel habría desempeñado, pero podría haberse encontrado al servicio de una institución cuyas acciones entraban cada vez más en conflicto con la misma conciencia que lo había llevado a negarse. Su decisión no cambió la historia de Argentina, pero hizo que nunca tuviera que preguntarse si había contribuido a uno de sus capítulos más oscuros. Trágicamente, muchos otros sí lo hicieron, y muchos de los responsables nunca fueron llevados ante la justicia.

Tendemos a hablar de la libertad en términos enormes: democracia, derechos humanos, gobierno constitucional, libertad. Obviamente, esas ideas importan. Eso fue lo que hizo Egidio.

Aquella noche helada en Bahía Blanca, no tenía influencia política, ni un periódico, ni un abogado a su lado, ni un ejército detrás de él.

Tenía ropa de verano, dos guardias armados y una conciencia.

Y permaneció allí.

Quizás esa sea la parte de su historia que vale la pena llevarse.

No que un joven haya derrotado de alguna manera a una dictadura. No lo hizo.

El Estado seguía siendo abrumadoramente más poderoso que él.

Pero hay momentos en los que el poder se mide de otra manera. Un gobierno puede controlar los movimientos de una persona, su comida, su ropa e incluso la temperatura a la que pasa la noche. Pero no necesariamente puede obligarla a creer que obedecer está bien.

La negativa de Egidio no cambió Argentina.

Pero significó que, en un pequeño rincón de ese país, al menos una persona decidió que había algo que el Estado no podía tener.

Su conciencia.

The man looked utterly ordinary.

He was fifty-four, slight and balding, dressed without distinction. He carried no briefcase full of state secrets, no bodyguards shadowed his movements, and no one who saw him gave him a second glance. To his neighbors, he was Ricardo Klement, a quiet factory worker who commuted each day to his job at the Mercedes-Benz plant in González Catán. He paid his bills, tended his garden, and returned home each evening to his wife and four sons, the youngest barely five years old.

There was nothing remarkable about him.

Except for what he had done.

If Buenos Aires had taught the twentieth century anything, it was that extraordinary stories often unfolded behind remarkably ordinary front doors.

For nearly a decade, Ricardo Klement had lived just such an ordinary life. He had rented modest homes, worked manual jobs, and gradually blended into the rhythms of suburban Argentina. He spoke little, attracted even less attention, and seemed to embody the postwar immigrant experience shared by hundreds of thousands of Europeans who had crossed the Atlantic seeking a fresh start.

There was just one problem.

Ricardo Klement did not exist.

The name appeared on identity papers. It appeared on employment records. It appeared wherever official documentation was required. But it belonged to no childhood, no birthplace, no family history. It was an invention, carefully assembled for a man determined to erase himself.

His real name was Adolf Eichmann.

To describe Eichmann merely as a Nazi officer is rather like describing the Titanic as a boat. He was not the architect of the Holocaust—that responsibility belonged to others higher in the Nazi hierarchy—but he became one of its principal organizers. As head of the SS department responsible for Jewish affairs, Eichmann transformed genocide into administration. He coordinated trains, timetables, deportation lists, and bureaucracy with chilling efficiency. Millions of people passed through a system that functioned, in part, because men like Eichmann ensured it ran on schedule.

When the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, many of its leaders lay dead. Others stood trial at Nuremberg before the eyes of the world. Eichmann, however, vanished.

For years, rumors flourished. Some believed he had been killed during the final days of the war. Others insisted he had escaped to the Middle East. His name surfaced periodically in Spain, Egypt, Syria, and Paraguay, only to disappear again into speculation and false leads. As the years passed, even seasoned investigators began to wonder whether history’s trail had simply gone cold.

It hadn’t.

While much of the world searched in the wrong places, Eichmann quietly built a new life nearly 12,000 kilometers from Berlin. He found work. He raised a family. He rode the bus to and from work. The man who had helped orchestrate one of history’s greatest crimes had become almost invisible—not because he was hiding in a mountain fortress or an underground bunker, but because he had mastered the far more effective art of appearing completely unremarkable.

It is one of the great paradoxes of the twentieth century that one of its most notorious fugitives was eventually found not in some remote wilderness, but walking home from work along a dirt road.

That discovery raises a question every bit as fascinating as the capture itself.

How did one of the world’s most wanted men end up living so quietly in Argentina in the first place?

The answer is neither simple nor comfortable. It lies in the chaotic aftermath of the Second World War, when Europe was rebuilding from catastrophe, millions of displaced people were searching for new lives, and Argentina opened its doors to an unprecedented wave of immigration. Among those seeking opportunity were honest laborers, skilled professionals, families fleeing devastation—and, hidden among them, a number of men desperate to leave far more than a ruined continent behind.

Before Mossad could find Adolf Eichmann, someone first had to help him disappear.

How Argentina Became a Refuge

To understand how Adolf Eichmann reached Buenos Aires, it helps to imagine Europe in 1945.

The war had ended, but peace looked remarkably little like peace.

Cities lay in ruins. Railway stations overflowed with refugees. Millions of people wandered a continent where homes had vanished, borders had shifted, and governments were struggling simply to count the living. Families searched desperately for missing relatives. Former prisoners of war trudged home on foot. Entire populations found themselves stranded on the wrong side of newly drawn frontiers.

It was the largest movement of displaced people in modern European history.

Against that backdrop, Argentina appeared less as a distant country than as a promise.

For decades it had actively encouraged immigration. The country’s vast agricultural economy needed workers. Its leaders envisioned Argentina as a nation built by newcomers, a belief neatly captured decades earlier by the statesman Juan Bautista Alberdi’s famous phrase, Gobernar es poblar—”To govern is to populate.” By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of Italians, Spaniards, Germans, Jews, Syrians, Lebanese, Poles, Croatians, and countless others had crossed the Atlantic, helping transform Buenos Aires into one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities.

When the Second World War ended, that tradition did not suddenly disappear.

The government of President Juan Domingo Perón continued to encourage European immigration, believing that skilled workers, engineers, technicians, farmers, and professionals could accelerate Argentina’s industrial and economic development. Between the late 1940s and early 1950s, hundreds of thousands of Europeans arrived legally, many fleeing the destruction of war rather than any criminal past. For the overwhelming majority, Argentina represented exactly what it had represented for generations: a chance to begin again.

But wherever there are rivers of legitimate migration, there are always those willing to drift unnoticed with the current.

Across Europe, clandestine escape routes gradually emerged. Historians later gave them a memorable name: the ratlines.

They were not a single organization or master plan, but a loose web of sympathizers, forgers, smugglers, corrupt officials, opportunists, and occasionally members of religious or humanitarian institutions acting for very different reasons. Some participants believed they were helping anti-communist refugees escape Soviet-controlled Europe. Others were motivated by ideology, profit, misplaced compassion, or simple indifference to the identities of the people whose papers they processed.

For men with enough patience—and enough luck—the system offered something more valuable than money.

A new identity.

False names became genuine passports. Genuine passports opened genuine borders. A man could leave Europe under one name, pass through refugee camps under another, obtain travel documents from international agencies, and disembark in South America as someone who had never existed before.

Adolf Eichmann was far from the only Nazi to exploit those routes. Men such as Josef Mengele, Erich Priebke, and Ante Pavelić would also find refuge in South America, though not always in Argentina and not always under the same circumstances. Their stories have often overshadowed those of the millions of ordinary immigrants who arrived at the same ports carrying nothing more sinister than family photographs, a few possessions, and the hope that their children might inherit a better future.

That distinction matters.

To reduce Argentina’s postwar immigration to “the country that welcomed Nazis” is to misunderstand both the scale and the complexity of what occurred. The vast majority of newcomers were honest immigrants rebuilding shattered lives. Yet it is equally true that among them were individuals responsible for some of the twentieth century’s greatest crimes—people who successfully exploited administrative weaknesses, international confusion, and political calculations to disappear into plain sight.

For nearly a decade, Adolf Eichmann was one of them.

He had crossed an ocean, exchanged one name for another, found work, raised a family, and convinced almost everyone that Ricardo Klement was exactly who he claimed to be.

Almost everyone.

Thousands of kilometres away, in the newly established State of Israel, there remained people who had not forgotten the man behind the paperwork. They had spent years collecting fragments of evidence, chasing rumours across continents, and pursuing leads that repeatedly dissolved into disappointment.

Then, quietly, one clue refused to disappear.

It pointed not to Berlin.

Not to Madrid.

Not to Cairo.

But to a forgotten outpost along a dirt road on the northern edge of Buenos Aires—a far cry from the comfortable life he had once known in Germany, and an unlikely place for one of history’s most notorious men to be hiding in plain sight.

The Hunters

History likes to celebrate the moment the trap finally springs.

It pays far less attention to the years spent searching for the trap’s location.

Adolf Eichmann was not discovered because a brilliant spy stumbled across him by chance. He was found because a handful of people, separated by continents and connected only by a shared refusal to let the past disappear, continued asking questions long after most of the world had stopped listening.

One of them was a German Jew named Lothar Hermann.

Hermann had endured imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp before escaping Nazi Germany and rebuilding his life in Argentina. Years of persecution had left him almost completely blind, but not incapable of recognizing danger. Ironically, it was not he but his teenage daughter, Silvia, who unknowingly wandered into history.

In the mid-1950s she met a young man named Klaus Eichmann.

The relationship seemed innocent enough. Young people meet. They talk. They dream. Parents worry.

Then Klaus began boasting about his father’s wartime service.

Not with shame.

With pride.

The surname was enough to unsettle Hermann. Adolf Eichmann had not been an obscure officer lost amid the chaos of the Third Reich. His name had become synonymous with the machinery of deportation that had destroyed millions of lives. Hermann urged his daughter to learn more, and slowly, almost imperceptibly, fragments began to accumulate. The father. The age. The German accent. The unexplained past. A man living under another name.

It sounded almost unbelievable.

So unbelievable, in fact, that when Hermann reported his suspicions, few believed him. Israeli intelligence initially regarded the information with considerable skepticism. The idea that one of the most wanted men in the world could be living in modest circumstances in an unremarkable corner north of Buenos Aires seemed implausible. Surely someone of Eichmann’s stature would have escaped with wealth, influence, and powerful protection. The lead was quietly shelved.

Hermann refused to let it die.

He continued writing letters. He continued pressing officials. German prosecutor Fritz Bauer, himself deeply frustrated by the reluctance of postwar West Germany to aggressively pursue former Nazis, quietly passed information to Israel because he feared it might otherwise disappear into bureaucracy.

Persistence, rather than espionage, kept the investigation alive.

By late 1959, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion authorized Mossad director Isser Harel to determine, once and for all, whether Adolf Eichmann had truly resurfaced in Argentina. There would be no dramatic commando raid—not yet. First came the far more difficult task of proving that Ricardo Klement and Adolf Eichmann were the same man beyond any conceivable doubt.

That responsibility fell largely to investigator Zvi Aharoni.

When Aharoni arrived in Buenos Aires in early 1960, the trail immediately went cold. The address he had been given was empty. Eichmann had moved only weeks earlier. Years of searching seemed about to collapse because of a simple change of residence.

Instead of returning home, Aharoni began doing what detectives have always done.

He walked.

He asked questions.

He watched.

He listened.

One small clue led to another until someone casually mentioned where the German family had relocated. Eventually the search arrived at a modest house on Garibaldi Street in San Fernando.

There, surveillance began.

The agents observed the house for days. They noted bus schedules, work shifts, family routines, and the exact time a balding middle-aged man returned home each evening from his job at Mercedes-Benz. Using a camera concealed inside a briefcase, Aharoni quietly photographed him from a distance. The images were sent to Israel, where they were compared with wartime photographs and physical records. There was no dramatic moment of revelation—only the slow accumulation of certainty.

One detail proved especially persuasive.

The man returned home on 21 March 1960 carrying flowers.

It happened to be his wedding anniversary.

Adolf Eichmann had married Vera Liebl on 21 March 1935.

Some coincidences are simply too precise to ignore.

By April, the conclusion was unavoidable.

Ricardo Klement had never existed.

Adolf Eichmann had been quietly living on the outskirts of Buenos Aires for nearly a decade.

Finding him, however, was only half the challenge.

The harder question remained.

How do you remove one of the world’s most notorious fugitives from a sovereign nation without firing a shot, provoking an international crisis, or allowing him to disappear for a second time?

The answer would become one of the most audacious intelligence operations ever attempted.

Eleven Days in Buenos Aires

Finding Adolf Eichmann answered one question.

Removing him from Argentina created another.

Israel had no realistic legal path to extradition. Approaching Argentine authorities risked alerting Eichmann, allowing him to disappear once again. Fifteen years of painstaking work could vanish overnight.

The decision was made.

They would take him.

Quietly.

In the spring of 1960, a small Mossad team entered Argentina under assumed identities. They arrived separately, rented ordinary cars, stayed in different hotels, and blended into Buenos Aires. There were no cinematic gadgets or dramatic confrontations. Their greatest weapon was anonymity.

For days they watched Garibaldi Street.

They timed buses.

Measured the walk from the stop to Eichmann’s house.

Observed neighbors.

Recorded every detail.

There could be no mistakes.

If Eichmann resisted loudly, the mission could collapse. If Argentine authorities intervened, agents of one country would be caught conducting an illegal operation inside another.

On the evening of 11 May 1960, the waiting ended.

As Bus 203 pulled away, Eichmann began his short walk home, unaware that history had quietly stepped from the shadows.

An agent approached and spoke a few words in Spanish.

Eichmann hesitated.

That moment was enough.

The team seized him, placed him in a waiting car, and disappeared into the Buenos Aires night.

The entire operation lasted less than a minute.

No shots were fired.

No bystanders were harmed.

The man who had escaped justice for fifteen years had vanished once again—this time from Argentina.

But capturing Eichmann was only the beginning.

Keeping him hidden for eleven days inside Buenos Aires was an extraordinary feat.

At a safe house, he was questioned and eventually acknowledged his identity. He also signed a statement declaring that he was traveling to Israel voluntarily, a document intended to strengthen Israel’s claim that the operation was more than a simple abduction.

Meanwhile, Buenos Aires continued as normal.

Buses labored across the city.

Commerce bustled along Florida Street.

Football dominated weekend conversations.

Almost no one knew that one of history’s most wanted men was being held nearby.

The escape depended on precision and luck.

Israel’s national airline, El Al, had arrived in Buenos Aires to transport an official delegation celebrating the 150th anniversary of Argentina’s May Revolution. The return flight provided the opportunity.

Clean-shaven, heavily sedated, dressed as an airline crew member, and disguised as a worker recovering from excessive drinking, Eichmann was moved through Ezeiza airport with little attention.

On 20 May 1960, the aircraft lifted off.

Only after crossing the Atlantic was the mission truly complete.

For the first time in fifteen years, Adolf Eichmann was no longer escaping justice.

He was finally being carried toward it.

Justice, Sovereignty, and Memory

On 23 May 1960, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion rose before the Knesset and delivered a brief announcement that reverberated around the world.

“Adolf Eichmann... is already under arrest in Israel.”

The reaction was immediate.

Survivors of the Holocaust, many of whom had believed they would never see another senior Nazi brought before a court, responded with profound emotion. Newspapers around the world carried the extraordinary news across their front pages. Yet alongside relief came another, unavoidable question.

Had Israel violated Argentina’s sovereignty?

The Argentine government lodged a formal diplomatic protest, arguing that the operation represented an unacceptable breach of international law. The dispute quickly reached the United Nations Security Council, which acknowledged that Argentina’s sovereignty had indeed been infringed while stopping short of questioning Israel’s determination to prosecute one of history’s principal perpetrators of genocide. Eventually, after delicate diplomatic negotiations, both governments agreed to resolve the dispute through mutual statements expressing regret over the circumstances while allowing the legal proceedings against Eichmann to continue.

The courtroom in Jerusalem became something far greater than the trial of a single man.

Unlike the Nuremberg Trials, where vast documentary evidence often dominated proceedings, the Eichmann trial gave unprecedented prominence to the voices of survivors. For weeks, witness after witness recounted experiences that many had never spoken of publicly before. Millions around the world watched televised proceedings in which the machinery of the Holocaust was explained not only through official records, but through the memories of those who had endured it.

Sitting inside a glass booth designed to protect him from possible attack, Eichmann appeared almost disappointingly ordinary.

He was neither theatrical nor charismatic.

He spoke in bureaucratic language.

He insisted repeatedly that he had merely followed orders.

The image unsettled observers.

Many had expected to encounter a monster.

Instead, they cofronted an administrator.

The philosopher Hannah Arendt, reporting on the trial, later coined the phrase “the banality of evil” to describe what she believed she had witnessed: not a demonic figure, but an ordinary man who had surrendered moral judgment to obedience and bureaucracy. Her interpretation remains controversial among historians and philosophers, yet it transformed discussions about personal responsibility, authority, and complicity in ways that continue today.

In December 1961, Eichmann was convicted on multiple counts of crimes against humanity, crimes against the Jewish people, war crimes, and membership in criminal organizations. His appeals were rejected. Shortly after midnight on 1 June 1962, he was executed by hanging—the only civilian execution ever carried out under Israeli law. His ashes were scattered beyond Israel’s territorial waters, ensuring that no grave could become a place of pilgrimage.

Yet perhaps the operation’s greatest legacy lies beyond the courtroom.

Operation Eichmann demonstrated that the passage of time does not necessarily erase accountability. It reshaped international conversations about universal jurisdiction, influenced later efforts to prosecute war criminals from conflicts in the Balkans and Rwanda, and reinforced the principle that crimes against humanity occupy a category unlike ordinary offenses. It also transformed Holocaust remembrance, bringing survivors’ testimony into living rooms around the globe and ensuring that millions encountered their stories directly rather than through statistics alone.

For Argentina, the episode remains an unusually complicated chapter. It forced the country to confront uncomfortable questions about postwar immigration, state sovereignty, and the presence of Nazi fugitives within its borders, while also reminding the world that history often leaves traces in the most unexpected places.

When Adolf Eichmann stepped off Bus 203 on that quiet autumn evening in San Fernando, he believed he was making the same short walk home he had made hundreds of times before.

He never reached his front door.

Instead, he walked into history.

And history, after fifteen long years, was finally waiting for him.

La crisis argentina de 2001 no llegó de golpe. Llegó por etapas: al principio, silenciosa; después, inconfundible; y finalmente, imposible de ignorar.

Cuando llegó a su punto culminante, el presidente de la República abandonaría el cargo en helicóptero, sobrevolando una capital que había dejado de escuchar.

Pero ese momento, por icónico que sea, fue apenas el último fotograma de una película mucho más larga.

Una moneda atada a la confianza

Durante buena parte de la década de 1990, Argentina parecía haber resuelto uno de sus problemas más persistentes: la inflación.

El Plan de Convertibilidad, implementado en 1991, fijó el peso argentino al dólar estadounidense a una paridad de uno a uno. Sobre el papel, sonaba maravillosamente tranquilizador. Después de todo, ¿quién no querría una moneda que valiera exactamente lo mismo que la del país más poderoso del mundo? En la práctica, era un poco como poner a un chihuahua y a un gran danés con la misma correa y esperar que caminaran exactamente al mismo ritmo. Durante un tiempo, sorprendentemente, funcionó bastante bien. Los precios se estabilizaron. Los comercios aceptaban dólares. Volvieron las inversiones extranjeras. Por un breve período, el país pareció predecible.

Pero la estabilidad basada en un tipo de cambio fijo no es lo mismo que la estabilidad basada en la fortaleza económica.

Es, más bien, una forma de confianza, y esa confianza debe mantenerse constantemente.

Y la confianza, a diferencia de la moneda, no se puede imprimir.

El ajuste

Hacia fines de la década de 1990, el sistema comenzó a mostrar señales de tensión.

El crecimiento económico se desaceleró. El desempleo aumentó. La deuda pública se expandió. Y, cada vez más, los argentinos comenzaron a hacer algo que definiría la crisis que estaba por venir: empezaron a retirar su dinero.

No todos al mismo tiempo. Al principio, silenciosamente. Después, de manera sistemática.

Los bancos, que alguna vez habían simbolizado el regreso de un orden financiero moderno, comenzaron a parecer menos instituciones de confianza y más recipientes de incertidumbre. El dinero seguía estando allí, al menos técnicamente. Pero empezó a debilitarse la confianza en que seguiría estando allí.

El corralito

En diciembre de 2001, esa confianza finalmente se quebró.

El gobierno impuso lo que pasaría a conocerse simplemente como el corralito: una medida que restringía las extracciones de efectivo de las cuentas bancarias en un intento por evitar un colapso financiero total.

Para los argentinos comunes y corrientes, el efecto fue inmediato y desconcertante.

Los sueldos existían, pero no siempre se podían retirar en su totalidad. Los ahorros existían, pero solo en teoría. Los dólares depositados en cuentas no necesariamente podían retirarse en dólares.

El sistema bancario no había desaparecido técnicamente. Había sido cerrado. Y fuera de ese cierre, la bronca comenzó a crecer.

Las calles

Las protestas se extendieron por Buenos Aires y más allá. Lo que había comenzado como frustración económica se convirtió en una crisis política.

Hubo saqueos de supermercados. Las manifestaciones crecieron. Los gobiernos se sucedieron rápidamente, y cada uno heredaba menos autoridad que el anterior.

En el centro de la indignación estaba el corralito: la restricción bancaria de emergencia que limitaba cuánto dinero podían retirar las personas de sus propias cuentas. No fue una confiscación en el sentido formal, pero para millones de argentinos la diferencia se volvió casi imposible de percibir: los sueldos existían en el papel, los ahorros seguían dentro del sistema, pero el acceso al efectivo de repente estaba racionado, demorado o directamente impedido.

Lo que no se podía retirar no se podía usar. Y lo que no se podía usar rápidamente dejaba de sentirse como dinero.

En cuestión de días, Argentina atravesaría varios presidentes en una de las secuencias políticas más turbulentas de su historia moderna.

Y aun así, el sistema apenas se mantenía en pie, como algo cosido a las apuradas en vez de construido.

Entonces llegó el sonido que terminaría definiendo aquel momento: los cacerolazos.

Desde departamentos y balcones de toda la ciudad, la gente empezó a golpear ollas y cacerolas en una protesta coordinada e improvisada. Era un ruido inconfundiblemente doméstico convertido en protesta política: utensilios de cocina transformados en instrumentos. No hacían falta consignas, ni un liderazgo central, ni un escenario. Solo metal contra metal, cuadra tras cuadra, hasta que la propia ciudad parecía protestar contra su propio silencio.

No era solamente bronca. Era presencia. Una manera de decir: estamos acá y seguimos mirando.

El helicóptero

El 20 de diciembre de 2001, el presidente Fernando de la Rúa renunció.

Abandonó la Casa Rosada en helicóptero.

Las imágenes del helicóptero elevándose sobre la Plaza de Mayo se convirtieron en una de las metáforas visuales más poderosas de la historia argentina moderna: un jefe de Estado que no se marchaba mediante una ceremonia, sino mediante una evacuación.

El papel

A medida que el sistema financiero se fracturaba, también lo hacía el significado del dinero.

Los ahorros quedaron congelados o fueron convertidos. Los controles cambiarios transformaron la vida cotidiana. Los tipos de cambio se convirtieron en instrumentos políticos más que económicos.

En la práctica, los argentinos comenzaron a experimentar una realidad dual y casi surrealista:

El dinero oficial seguía existiendo. Pero su valor y su disponibilidad ya no parecían confiables.

Los salarios perdieron poder adquisitivo casi de la noche a la mañana. Los ahorros de la clase media se evaporaron en términos reales. Y la confianza en los bancos, una vez dañada, no se recuperó rápidamente.

El derrumbe

A comienzos de 2002, el peso fue devaluado. Se abandonó la paridad fija con el dólar. Lo que siguió fue un ajuste brusco y doloroso que transformó por completo la economía.

Algunos sectores finalmente se recuperaron. Otros se transformaron por completo. Pero el efecto psicológico resultó ser más duradero que el financiero.

Para muchos argentinos que vivieron aquella crisis, la lección no tuvo tanto que ver con la inflación o los tipos de cambio. Tuvo que ver con las instituciones y con lo que sucede cuando se deja de creer en ellas.

El recuerdo

Más de dos décadas después, la crisis todavía proyecta una larga sombra.

Los bancos se siguen usando, pero no se confía plenamente en ellos. La manera en que la gente ahorra está determinada tanto por los recuerdos como por las tasas de interés. Las conversaciones sobre moneda suelen llevar implícito un tono de cautela que a veces resulta difícil de comprender para quienes vienen de afuera.

Argentina’s crisis of 2001 did not arrive with a single dramatic impact. It arrived in stages—quiet at first, then unmistakable, and finally impossible to ignore.

By the time it reached its climax, the president of the republic would leave office in a helicopter, flying over a capital that had stopped listening.

But that moment, iconic as it is, was only the final frame of a much longer film.

A Currency Tied to Confidence

For much of the 1990s, Argentina appeared to have solved one of its most persistent problems: inflation.

The Convertibility Plan, introduced in 1991, pegged the Argentine peso to the US dollar at a one-to-one exchange rate. On paper, it sounded wonderfully reassuring. After all, who wouldn't want a currency that was worth exactly the same as the world's most powerful one? In reality, it was rather like putting a Chihuahua and a Great Dane on the same leash and expecting them to walk at exactly the same pace. For a while, they managed surprisingly well. Prices stabilized. Shops accepted dollars. Foreign investment returned. The country felt, briefly, predictable.

But stability built on fixed exchange rates is not the same as stability built on economic strength.

It is, instead, a form of confidence—one that must be constantly maintained.

And confidence, unlike currency, cannot be printed.

The Tightening

By the late 1990s, the system was under strain.

Economic growth slowed. Unemployment rose. Public debt expanded. And increasingly, Argentines began to do something that would define the crisis to come: they started to withdraw their money.

Not all at once. At first, quietly. Then systematically.

Banks, which had once symbolized the return of modern financial order, began to look less like institutions of trust and more like containers of uncertainty. Money was still technically there. But the belief that it would remain there began to weaken.

The Freeze

In December 2001, that belief finally broke.

The government imposed what became known simply as el corralito—“the little fence.” A policy that restricted cash withdrawals from bank accounts in an attempt to prevent total financial collapse.

For ordinary Argentines, the effect was immediate and disorienting.

Salaries existed—but could not always be fully accessed. Savings existed—but only in theory. Dollars held in accounts could not necessarily be withdrawn as dollars.

The banking system had not technically disappeared. It had been sealed. And outside that seal, anger began to build.

The Streets

Protests spread across Buenos Aires and beyond. What began as economic frustration turned into political crisis.

Supermarkets were looted. Demonstrations grew. Governments changed in rapid succession, each one inheriting less authority than the last.

At the center of the anger was el corralito—the emergency banking restriction that limited how much money people could withdraw from their own accounts. It was not a confiscation in the formal sense, but for millions it felt indistinguishable from one: salaries existed on paper, savings remained in the system, but access to cash was suddenly rationed, delayed, or denied altogether.

What could not be withdrawn could not be used. What could not be used quickly ceased to feel like money at all.

Within days, Argentina would cycle through multiple presidents in one of the most turbulent political sequences in its modern history.

And still, the system held together only loosely, like something stitched rather than built.

Then came the sound that came to define the moment: the cacerolazos.

From apartments and balconies across the city, people began banging pots and pans—cacerolas—in coordinated, improvised protest. It was an unmistakably domestic noise turned political: kitchenware transformed into instrument. There were no slogans required, no central leadership, no stage. Just metal striking metal, block after block, until the city itself seemed to be protesting its own silence.

It was not only anger. It was presence. A way of saying: we are here, and we are still watching.

The Helicopter

On 20 December 2001, President Fernando de la Rúa resigned.

He left the Casa Rosada by helicopter.

Images of the aircraft lifting off above the Plaza de Mayo became one of the defining visual metaphors of modern Argentine history: a head of state departing not through ceremony, but evacuation.

What followed was not a single transition of power, but a rapid succession of interim presidents—each holding office briefly, each unable to restore stability, each watching the crisis deepen further.

The Paper

As the financial system fractured, so did the meaning of money itself.

Savings were frozen or converted. Currency controls reshaped everyday life. Exchange rates became political instruments rather than economic ones.

In practice, Argentines began to experience a surreal dual reality:

Official money still existed. But its value—and its accessibility—no longer felt reliable.

Wages lost purchasing power almost overnight. Middle-class savings evaporated in real terms. Trust in banks, once damaged, did not recover quickly.

The Collapse

By early 2002, the peso had been devalued. The fixed parity with the dollar was abandoned. What followed was a sharp and painful adjustment that reshaped the entire economy.

Some sectors eventually recovered. Others transformed entirely. But the psychological effect proved more durable than the financial one.

For many Argentines who lived through it, the lesson was not about inflation or exchange rates. It was about institutions, and what happens when they stop being believed in.

The Memory

Two decades later, the crisis still casts a long shadow.

Banks are used, but not fully trusted. Savings behavior is shaped by memory as much as interest rates. Conversations about currency often carry an undertone of caution that outsiders sometimes struggle to understand.

Because in Argentina, money is not just a medium of exchange. It is a memory of instability. And memories, unlike policies, are not easily reset.

Looking Back at the Moment Everything Shifted

It is tempting to reduce 2001 to a single image: a helicopter rising over Buenos Aires.

But that image only makes sense if you understand the years that came before it—the slow tightening of pressure, the quiet withdrawal of trust, the gradual realization that systems designed to guarantee stability can also, under strain, produce the opposite.

The collapse did not happen in a day. It happened when enough people stopped believing it wouldn’t.

For many English speakers, foreign-language films arrive with labels like “art house” or “subtitled,” which can make them sound like homework rather than entertainment. It is a shame, because some of the greatest films ever made are not simply foreign—they are universal.

Argentina has produced many remarkable films, but few have captivated audiences around the world like El Secreto de Sus Ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes). Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010, it begins as what appears to be a murder mystery.

It isn’t.

Or at least, not only.

Beneath the investigation is a much larger story about memory, justice, love, and a country struggling to preserve the rule of law during a period when institutions were beginning to lose their authority.

Like so much of Argentina’s history, the crime is only the beginning.

A Murder That Refuses to Stay in the Past

The story begins twenty-five years after a brutal rape and murder.

Benjamín Espósito, a retired judicial investigator, decides to write a novel about the case that has haunted him for decades. As he revisits old files and old memories, he is also revisiting a country that has changed dramatically.

On the surface, the mystery seems straightforward.

A young woman has been murdered.

A suspect is identified.

Justice should follow.

Instead, the investigation reveals something much more complicated.

Political influence.

Institutional weakness.

Fear.

The deeper Espósito searches, the clearer it becomes that discovering the truth is one thing.

Ensuring justice is another.

When Politics Entered the Courtroom

To understand why the story carries such emotional weight, it helps to understand Argentina in the early 1970s.

The country was becoming increasingly polarized. Political violence was escalating, with attacks from armed guerrilla groups followed by brutal responses from right-wing death squads. Governments changed frequently, and confidence in institutions continued to decline.

By the time the military dictatorship began in 1976, many parts of Argentine society were already experiencing a profound crisis of trust.

The film captures this atmosphere without turning into a history lesson.

There are no long explanations.

No speeches telling the audience what to think.

Instead, history is felt through the gradual realization that the justice system itself is vulnerable to political pressure.

The greatest obstacle is not identifying what happened.

It is recognizing that some people become protected when their actions serve those in power.

Justice Delayed

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its refusal to present justice as inevitable.

Many stories reassure us that truth eventually wins. Real life is far less predictable. Cases remain unresolved. Evidence disappears. Institutions move slowly.

Families wait years for answers.

The widower at the center of the story refuses to allow his wife’s memory to disappear into another forgotten case. His grief is powerful precisely because it is quiet. He does not seek dramatic revenge.

He simply refuses to forget.

That idea connects deeply with Argentina’s own relationship with memory.

From the dictatorship’s disappeared to unresolved questions of justice and accountability, Argentina has repeatedly faced the challenge of deciding how a society remembers painful chapters of its past.

The Other Story

Yet El Secreto de Sus Ojos is not only about crime.

It is also one of cinema’s most moving love stories.

Not because it is sentimental.

Because it is painfully human.

Espósito and his supervisor, Irene Menéndez Hastings, spend years circling emotions neither seems capable of expressing. Careers, timing, fear, and circumstance repeatedly intervene.

Their relationship exists in glances, unfinished conversations, and opportunities quietly missed.

It is love communicated through silence.

The murder investigation gives the story momentum.

The unspoken love gives it its heart.

Good mysteries surprise us.

Por lo general, miramos hacia arriba.

Hacia los antiguos balcones de estilo francés que parecen flotar sobre las calles. Hacia la elegancia de la arquitectura Beaux-Arts. Hacia los jacarandás que esparcen sus flores violetas sobre las veredas. Hacia los cafés, las librerías y los edificios majestuosos que hacen que Buenos Aires se sienta menos como una ciudad y más como un museo viviente.

Pero, a veces, si disminuimos el paso, Buenos Aires nos invita a mirar bajo nuestros pies.

Porque algunas de las historias más importantes de esta ciudad no están escritas en monumentos ni exhibidas detrás de una vitrina.

Están incrustadas en las veredas.

En distintos rincones de Buenos Aires, pequeñas placas enmarcadas por coloridos mosaicos interrumpen el pavimento frente a edificios comunes. Para quien pasa sin detenerse, podrían parecer simples placas conmemorativas, quizás dedicadas a una persona importante que vivió allí o a algún hecho ocurrido hace mucho tiempo.

Pero estas placas cuentan otra historia.

No recuerdan a presidentes, artistas ni a figuras célebres.

Recuerdan a personas comunes.

Personas que vivieron en esos edificios.

Personas que caminaron por esas calles.

Personas que, una noche, desaparecieron.

Sin embargo, no son recuerdos de un pasado lejano. Cada una lleva el nombre de alguien que vivió o trabajó allí antes de desaparecer durante la última dictadura argentina.

Una noche en San Telmo

En una noche empapada por la lluvia, hace casi medio siglo, un Ford Falcon modelo 1974 avanzaba lentamente por la Avenida San Juan en dirección a San Telmo. Los limpiaparabrisas trazaban breves arcos sobre el parabrisas antes de que la lluvia volviera a cubrir el vidrio.

Para cualquiera que lo viera pasar, era apenas un auto más.

Y ahí residía precisamente su poder.

El Falcon estaba en todas partes en la Argentina. Era un auto familiar. Un auto de trabajo. Uno de los miles que circulaban por las calles del país. Sin embargo, durante los años de la dictadura, ver uno detenerse frente a una casa después del anochecer bastaba para que una cuadra entera quedara en silencio. Las cortinas se movían apenas. Las luces se apagaban. Los vecinos desviaban la mirada.

Para muchos argentinos, el Ford Falcon dejó de ser simplemente un auto. Se convirtió en la imagen inconfundible del miedo.

El Falcon dobló por la calle Perú y redujo la velocidad frente al número 923. Sus faros se apagaron, pero el motor siguió regulando.

Varios hombres descendieron bajo la lluvia.

Dentro del edificio, la gente dormía.

Tal vez alguien oyó cerrarse la puerta del auto. Tal vez escuchó pasos sobre la vereda. Tal vez el ruido de la puerta de entrada al edificio al abrirse. Y después llegó el sonido imposible de ignorar: el seco crujido de la madera cuando la puerta del departamento estalló en pedazos.

Los pasos irrumpieron por el piso. Una mujer gritó. Un hombre respondió a los gritos. Hubo un forcejeo: cuerpos golpeando contra los muebles, el ruido sordo de los golpes, las voces desesperadas de personas arrancadas del sueño y arrojadas al terror.

Y entonces, detrás de esas paredes, los vecinos tuvieron que tomar una decisión que nadie les había pedido tomar. ¿Debían abrir la puerta? ¿Salir en ayuda de quienes vivían al lado? ¿Llamar a la policía, sabiendo que tal vez ignoraría el llamado o, peor aún, que podía ser parte de lo que estaba ocurriendo? ¿O la única forma de protegerse a sí mismos y a sus familias era guardar silencio y fingir que no habían oído nada?

¿Qué podían hacer?

No existía un secuestro completamente silencioso.

Alguien escuchaba una puerta derribada.

Alguien escuchaba un forcejeo.

Alguien escuchaba voces llenas de miedo.

Y después, tan de repente como había comenzado, el edificio volvía a quedar en silencio.

Antes del amanecer, tres personas habían sido sacadas de ese departamento.

Nunca regresarían.

Lo ocurrido en el número 923 no fue un hecho aislado. El mismo patrón se repetiría cientos, quizás miles de veces, en toda la Argentina durante los años siguientes: un auto que llegaba después del anochecer, una puerta derribada, una familia despertada por la violencia y, después, el silencio.

Cada día, cientos de personas caminan sobre el lugar donde desaparecieron aquellas tres personas.

La mayoría desconoce la historia que yace bajo sus pies.

Pero la vereda la recuerda.

Cuando un país perdió a su gente

Para comprender estas placas, primero hay que entender uno de los capítulos más oscuros de la historia argentina.

Entre 1976 y 1983, la Argentina estuvo gobernada por una dictadura militar conocida como el Proceso de Reorganización Nacional.

El gobierno afirmaba que estaba librando una guerra contra las organizaciones guerrilleras de izquierda y restableciendo el orden en un país sacudido por la violencia política y la crisis económica.

Pero la respuesta terminó convirtiéndose en algo mucho más aterrador.

Se instauró un sistema de represión estatal.

Personas sospechadas de oponerse al gobierno —o incluso de tener algún vínculo con movimientos opositores— fueron secuestradas, detenidas ilegalmente, torturadas y, en muchos casos, asesinadas.

Las sacaban de sus casas.

De sus lugares de trabajo.

De las universidades.

De las calles.

Algunas desaparecieron sin dejar rastro.

Esa palabra —desaparecido— se convirtió en una de las más dolorosas de la historia argentina.

Porque la muerte, por devastadora que sea, trae consigo una terrible certeza.

Una tumba.

Un funeral.

Un último adiós.

Pero la desaparición deja algo distinto.

Condena a las familias a vivir entre la esperanza y el duelo.

Una esposa todavía dirige la mirada hacia la puerta cuando escucha pasos afuera.

Un padre sigue conservando la fotografía de su hijo en un lugar donde pueda verla todos los días.

Cuando no hay un cuerpo, ni un funeral, ni una tumba, la esperanza y el dolor aprenden a convivir.

Y queda una pregunta que nunca deja de hacerse.

¿Dónde están?

Los niños a quienes les arrebataron su identidad

Entre los capítulos más desgarradores de aquel período se encuentran los casos de mujeres embarazadas que fueron detenidas.

Algunas dieron a luz mientras permanecían cautivas en centros clandestinos de detención.

Después del nacimiento de sus bebés, muchas de esas madres fueron asesinadas o pasaron a integrar la lista de los desaparecidos.

A los niños se los llevaron.

Algunos fueron entregados a familias vinculadas con las Fuerzas Armadas o las fuerzas de seguridad. Otros fueron adoptados mediante procedimientos irregulares. Muchos crecieron sin saber que la historia que les habían contado sobre sus orígenes estaba incompleta.

Celebraron cumpleaños que no eran los verdaderos.

Llevaron apellidos que no les pertenecían.

Crecieron amando a una familia mientras, en algún otro lugar, otra familia pasaba décadas buscándolos.

Imaginemos la crueldad de esa incertidumbre.

Una abuela mirando la fotografía de una hija desaparecida y preguntándose:

«¿Habrá tenido un hijo?»

«¿Estará vivo mi nieto?»

Para muchas familias argentinas, esas no eran preguntas históricas.

Eran las preguntas que marcarían el resto de sus vidas.

Y mientras la dictadura intentaba borrar personas de la historia, un grupo de mujeres decididas se negó a permitir que fueran olvidadas.

Con el tiempo, serían conocidas en todo el mundo como las Madres y Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo.

Caminaron.

Buscaron.

Exigieron respuestas.

Y demostraron que, incluso en los momentos más oscuros, la memoria puede convertirse en un acto de resistencia.

Las madres que se negaron a olvidar

El 30 de abril de 1977, un pequeño grupo de mujeres caminó hacia la Plaza de Mayo.

No eran políticas.

No eran revolucionarias.

Eran madres que buscaban a sus hijos.

Llevaban fotografías cuidadosamente resguardadas bajo pilotos empapados por la lluvia. Sus pañuelos blancos, firmemente anudados sobre el cabello, se agitaban mientras el viento recorría la Plaza. Algunas vestían sencillos vestidos bajo sus impermeables. Otras caminaban con zapatos de charol perfectamente lustrados, de esos que usaban mujeres que habían dedicado su vida a cuidar un hogar, criar una familia y creer que el Estado las protegería. No eran soldados. No llevaban armas. Solo llevaban los nombres de sus hijos e hijas, las fotografías de quienes les habían arrebatado y una pregunta que ningún funcionario quería responder:

«¿Dónde están?»

Al principio recorrieron oficinas gubernamentales, comisarías y dependencias militares repitiendo la misma pregunta desesperada:

«¿Dónde están nuestros hijos e hijas?»

Obtuvieron silencio.

Entonces decidieron dirigirse al corazón mismo del poder argentino.

Cada jueves comenzaron a caminar en círculos alrededor de la Plaza de Mayo, llevando las fotografías de sus hijos desaparecidos. Como las reuniones públicas estaban prohibidas, caminaban de a dos para que las autoridades no pudieran acusarlas de formar una concentración ilegal.

Lo que comenzó como un acto de desesperación terminó convirtiéndose en uno de los símbolos más poderosos de la defensa de los derechos humanos en el mundo.

El gobierno quería que los desaparecidos se volvieran invisibles.

Las madres se encargaron de que jamás fueran olvidados.

Sus pañuelos blancos se transformaron en un símbolo reconocido mucho más allá de las fronteras argentinas, un recordatorio de que las personas comunes pueden desafiar incluso a las instituciones más poderosas cuando están armadas únicamente de coraje y memoria.

El peso del silencio

Quizás la pregunta más dolorosa sobre la Guerra Sucia de Argentina no sea solamente qué ocurrió.

Sino durante cuánto tiempo se permitió que ocurriera.

Una dictadura no sobrevive únicamente mediante la violencia. También sobrevive a través del silencio. Algunas personas apartaron la mirada porque tenían miedo. Otras porque no querían saber. Y algunas porque creyeron la explicación del gobierno.

La historia rara vez está marcada únicamente por quienes cometen actos terribles. También está marcada por quienes deciden si hablarán cuando son testigos de una injusticia.

Esa incómoda realidad forma parte de lo que hace que la historia de Argentina sea tan difícil de enfrentar.

Como exploré en mi artículo anterior sobre La historia oficial, el cine a veces nos permite comprender la historia de una manera que los simples hechos no pueden. Una película puede mostrarnos no solo lo que ocurrió, sino también cómo se sintió para las personas comunes que intentaban comprender una realidad que había sido ocultada ante ellas.

La historia no vive solamente en los archivos.

Vive en los recuerdos.

En las familias.

En las preguntas que nunca encontraron respuesta.

Las piedras que hablan

Buenos Aires es una ciudad que recompensa a quienes caminan despacio.

Mira hacia arriba y descubrirás una arquitectura magnífica. Mira a tu alrededor y encontrarás cafés, librerías y barrios llenos de vida.

Pero a veces, mira hacia abajo.

Las veredas recuerdan.

Recuerdan el departamento de la calle Perú.

Recuerdan los pasos de las personas que caminaron por estas calles antes de desaparecer. Recuerdan a las familias que esperaron. Recuerdan a las madres que se negaron a dejar de buscar.

La propia ciudad se ha convertido en un archivo; no uno guardado dentro de un edificio, sino uno escrito en las calles.

Hace años, el poeta Pablo Neruda escribió:

Los desaparecidos de Argentina fueron arrancados de sus hogares, pero nunca fueron borrados.

Sus nombres permanecen.

Sus historias permanecen.

Y cada persona que se detiene junto a una de esas pequeñas placas en la vereda se convierte, aunque sea brevemente, en un testigo.

We are usually looking up.

At the old French balconies hovering above the streets. At the elegance of Beaux-Arts architecture. At jacaranda trees scattering purple blossoms across the pavement. At the cafés, bookstores, and grand buildings that make Buenos Aires feel less like a city and more like a living museum.

But sometimes, if we slow down, Buenos Aires asks us to look beneath our feet.

Because some of the most important stories in this city are not written on monuments or displayed behind glass.

They are embedded in the sidewalks.

Throughout Buenos Aires, small plaques bordered with colorful tiles interrupt the pavement outside ordinary buildings. To the casual passerby, they might appear to be ordinary historical markers—perhaps commemorating an important person who once lived nearby or an event that happened long ago.

But these plaques tell a different story.

They do not commemorate presidents, artists, or famous citizens.

They remember ordinary people.

People who lived in these buildings.

People who walked these streets.

People who, one night, vanished. However, they are not reminders of a distant past. Each one bears the name of someone who lived or worked there before disappearing during Argentina’s dictatorship.

One Night, in San Telmo

On a rain-soaked night nearly half a century ago, a 1974 Ford Falcon rolled slowly along Avenida San Juan toward San Telmo. Its windscreen wipers carved brief arcs through the torrent before the rain swept across the glass once more.

To anyone watching, it was just another car.

That was precisely its power.

The Falcon was everywhere in Argentina. It was a family car. A work car. One of thousands on the nation’s roads. Yet during the years of the dictatorship, the sight of one pulling up outside a home after dark was enough to silence a street. Curtains twitched. Lights went out. Neighbors looked away.

For many Argentines, the Ford Falcon became more than a car. It became the unmistakable shape of fear.

The Falcon turned left onto Perú Street and slowed outside number 923. Its headlights went dark, but the engine continued to idle.

Several men stepped out into the rain.

Inside the building, people slept.

Perhaps someone heard the car door close. Perhaps footsteps on the pavement. Perhaps the front door opening downstairs. Then came the sound that could not be ignored: the sharp crack of wood as the apartment door splintered into pieces.

Footsteps rushed across the floor. A woman screamed. A man shouted back. There was a struggle—the crash of bodies against furniture, the heavy sound of blows, the desperate voices of people being dragged from sleep into terror.

And then, behind the walls, neighbors had to make a decision without ever being asked to make one. Should they open their doors? Should they come to the aid of their neighbors? Should they call the police, knowing that the police might ignore the call—or worse, be part of what was happening? Or was the only way to protect themselves and their families to remain silent and pretend they had heard nothing?

What could they do?

There was no such thing as a completely silent kidnapping.

Someone hears a door forced open.

Someone hears a struggle.

Someone hears frightened voices.

And then, just as suddenly, the building falls quiet again.

Before dawn, three people had been taken from that apartment.

They would never return.

What happened at number 923 was not an isolated event. The same pattern would be repeated hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times across Argentina in the years that followed: a car arriving after dark, a door forced open, a family awakened by violence, and then the silence that followed.

Every day, hundreds of people walk over the place where those three disappeared.

Most do not know the story beneath their feet.

But the sidewalk remembers.

When a Country Lost Its People

To understand these plaques, one must understand one of the darkest chapters in Argentine history.

Between 1976 and 1983, Argentina was ruled by a military dictatorship known as the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional.

The government claimed it was fighting a war against left-wing guerrilla groups and restoring order to a country suffering from political violence and economic crisis.

But the response became something far more terrifying.

A system of state repression was created.

People suspected of opposing the government—or even simply associated with opposition movements—were kidnapped, detained illegally, tortured, and in many cases killed.

They were taken from their homes.

From workplaces.

From universities.

From the streets.

Some disappeared without a trace.

That word—desaparecido—became one of the most painful words in Argentine history.

Because death, as devastating as it is, brings a terrible certainty.

A grave.

A funeral.

A final goodbye.

But disappearance creates something different.

It traps families between hope and grief.

A wife still glances toward the door when she hears footsteps outside.

A father still keeps his son’s photograph where he can see it every day.

When there is no body, no funeral, and no grave, hope and grief learn to live together.

And a question that never stops.

Where are they?

The Children Who Were Given New Lives

Among the most heartbreaking chapters of this period were the cases involving pregnant women who were detained.

Some gave birth while imprisoned in secret detention centers.

After their babies were born, many mothers were killed or disappeared.

The children were taken away.

Some were given to families connected to the military or security forces. Others were adopted through irregular procedures. Many grew up without knowing that the history they had been told about their origins was incomplete.

They celebrated birthdays that were not their real birthdays.

They carried surnames that were not truly theirs.

They grew up loving families while another family, somewhere else, spent decades searching for them.

Imagine the cruelty of that uncertainty.

A grandmother looking at a photograph of a missing daughter and wondering:

“Did she have a child?”

“Is my grandchild alive?”

For many Argentine families, these were not historical questions.

They were the questions that shaped their entire lives.

And while the dictatorship tried to erase people from history, a group of determined women refused to allow them to be forgotten.

They became known around the world as the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.

They walked.

They searched.

They demanded answers.

And they proved that even in the darkest moments, memory can become an act of resistance.

The Mothers Who Refused to Forget

On April 30, 1977, a small group of women walked to Plaza de Mayo.

They were not politicians.

They were not revolutionaries.

They were mothers searching for their children.

They came carrying photographs tucked carefully beneath rain-soaked coats, their white headscarves tied firmly around their hair as the wind swept across the Plaza. Some wore simple dresses beneath their raincoats. Others walked in polished patent leather shoes—the kind worn by women who had spent their lives caring for homes, raising families, and believing that their government would protect them. They were not soldiers. They carried no weapons. They came with nothing but the names of their sons and daughters, the photographs of the children they had lost, and a question that no official wanted to answer: Where are they?

At first, they approached government offices, police stations, and military authorities asking the same desperate question:

“Where are our sons and daughters?”

They received silence.

So they went to the heart of Argentine power itself.

Every Thursday, they began walking in circles around the Plaza de Mayo, carrying photographs of their missing children. Because public gatherings were restricted, they walked in pairs so authorities could not accuse them of forming an illegal crowd.

What began as an act of desperation became one of the most powerful symbols of human rights in the world.

The government wanted the disappeared to become invisible.

The mothers made sure they would never be forgotten.

Their white headscarves became a symbol recognized far beyond Argentina’s borders—a reminder that ordinary people can challenge even the most powerful institutions when armed with nothing more than courage and memory.

The Weight of Silence

Perhaps the most painful question about Argentina’s Dirty War is not only what happened.

It is how long it was allowed to happen.

A dictatorship does not survive through violence alone. It also survives through silence. Some people looked away because they were afraid. Some because they did not want to know. Some because they believed the government’s explanation.

History is rarely shaped only by those who commit terrible acts. It is also shaped by those who decide whether they will speak when witnessing injustice.

That uncomfortable reality is part of what makes Argentina’s history so difficult to confront.

As I explored in my previous article about La Historia Oficial, cinema sometimes allows us to understand history in a way that facts alone cannot. A film can show us not only what happened, but what it felt like for ordinary people trying to understand a reality that had been hidden from them.

History lives not only in archives.

It lives in memories.

In families.

In questions that were never answered.

The River That Remembers

Today, one of the most powerful places to reflect on this history is the Parque de la Memoria, located along the Río de la Plata.

The location itself is meaningful.

During the dictatorship, many victims were killed in what became known as the “death flights,” where prisoners were thrown from military aircraft into the river below.

The river that gives Buenos Aires so much of its beauty also carries the memory of one of its darkest chapters.

Along the park’s walls are thousands of names.

Each name represents a person who once had a home.

A family.

A voice.

A future.

The monument does not allow them to remain statistics.

It gives them back what the dictatorship tried to take away:

Their identity.

Their existence.

Their place in history.

The Stones That Speak

Buenos Aires is a city that rewards those who walk slowly.

Look upward, and you will discover magnificent architecture. Look around, and you will find cafés, bookstores, and neighborhoods full of life.

But sometimes, look down.

The sidewalks remember.

They remember the apartment on Perú Street.

They remember the footsteps of people who walked these streets before disappearing. They remember the families who waited. They remember the mothers who refused to stop searching.

The city itself has become an archive—not one stored in a building, but one written into the streets.

Years ago, the poet Pablo Neruda wrote:

Argentina’s disappeared were taken from their homes, but they were never erased.

Their names remain.

Their stories remain.

And every person who pauses beside one of those small sidewalk plaques becomes, even briefly, a witness.

The rules of a line, or queue, are deceptively simple.

You determine who is the last person, stand behind them, and wait your turn. Every now and then, someone decides the rules don't apply to them, but lines have a remarkable way of administering swift justice.

Spanish is Spanish, too—or so I thought. A few years of high school Spanish, reinforced by decades of confidently ordering tacos and mas guacamole, leave you with the comforting illusion that you'll manage just fine. There may be different accents, regional expressions, and local quirks, but it's all the same language. You may not sound like a native speaker, but surely you'll recognize most of the words.

These two basic principles had served me perfectly well throughout my life.

Then I moved to Argentina.

The National Sport Nobody Talks About: Waiting

One simple rule has always served me well: if there’s a line, get into it.

Somebody knows something.

This served me particularly well when Carmen and I lived in London.

One of my favorite places was Borough Market. Heavenly aromas drifted from prepared foods representing every corner of the globe. Bakers displayed loaves and pastries that seemed too beautiful to eat, greengrocers arranged their produce like works of art, and the selection of cheeses was so vast that a Frenchman would feel quite at home. Everything looked irresistible—right up until you glanced at the price tags.

And, naturally, there was a queue (we were in London, after all).

A long one.

A very long one.

I would immediately join it.

Carmen would look at me.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting in line.”

“But the line is huge.”

“I know.”

“What are they selling?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

She would look at me, follow the queue to the front, then slowly back to me before delivering the universal language of wives: an eye roll, a shake of the head, and a sigh deep enough to register on the Richter scale.

"Somebody knows something," I would say, believing, as husbands often do, that the matter was settled.

And people in the queue always proved me right. A long queue was proof that someone, somewhere, had found something extraordinary: a sandwich overflowing with slow-roasted pork and crackling, a pastry that belonged in a museum, a cheese with a name you couldn't pronounce but immediately needed to try, or a doughnut worth sacrificing your dignity in the rain. There was always the chance that the people at the front had discovered free money, but whatever the reason, they knew something you didn't.

Argentina has made me reconsider this philosophy.

Because here, there is sometimes a line.

Except it isn’t really a line.

Everyone somehow knows who is next.

Except you.

You walk into a bakery, a pharmacy, a bank or some other establishment and find a group of people standing around. They appear to be waiting, but not in any recognizable arrangement.

Nobody is standing in a perfectly straight row.

Nobody is holding a numbered ticket.

Nobody has placed a shopping trolley behind them to mark their position.

And yet, somehow, everyone knows.

You, meanwhile, have no idea.

Eventually, you learn to ask:

¿Quién es el último?

Who is last?

Someone points at somebody.

You now know who is in front of you.

When another person arrives, they ask the same question.

You point at yourself.

Congratulations. You are now part of the system.

It is actually remarkably efficient. It simply requires you to understand that the queue is not necessarily a physical object.

It is more of an agreement.

There are, of course, moments when I find myself standing somewhere and wondering whether I am waiting in a line, whether I have accidentally joined a line, or whether everyone else is simply standing there for completely unrelated reasons.

This is when I return to my old Borough Market philosophy.

If there is a line, get into it.

Somebody knows something.

You may just need to ask who.

Learning Spanish Didn’t Prepare Me for Argentine Spanish

Before moving to Argentina, I learned enough Mexican Spanish from living in Southern California to know where I could relieve myself. I also knew a few words I had picked up from kitchen staff while working in restaurants. One of them, I thought, meant “Hurry up!”

So, naturally, I used it. Frequently.

And once in front of my Ecuadorian mother-in-law.

Her eyes widened and her eyebrows rose.

I had not, as it turned out, told anyone to hurry up. I had apparently told them to move a particular part of their anatomy in a manner that was considerably less polite.

This was my first indication that my Spanish education had been somewhat... specialized.

This turned out to be both useful and completely insufficient.

I could order food and ask for directions. I was not expecting to arrive in Buenos Aires and discover that the Spanish language had been quietly altered while I wasn’t looking.

Argentine Spanish is not simply Spanish with a different accent.

It has its own rhythm, its own vocabulary, its own pronunciation and, in Buenos Aires at least, a sound that can sometimes make you wonder whether Spanish has been left alone with Italian for too long.

There is vos instead of tú. There is the famous pronunciation of ll and y. There are expressions that are perfectly normal here but would leave a Spanish learner from another country wondering whether they had accidentally entered a different language.

And then there are the Spanish words you know and use that you cannot use here in Argentina because they take on a whole new meaning.

Carlos, one of our new friends, was originally from the United States but had been living in Buenos Aires for just over a year. He was also fluent in Spanish, thanks in part to his Peruvian mother. Carlos had therefore acquired the sort of linguistic knowledge that can be useful in Argentina, where a perfectly innocent word can occasionally turn up wearing a fake moustache and carrying a criminal record.

Before a social gathering we were hosting at our house later that evening, Carlos decided Carmen needed to know that the Spanish she had spent a lifetime speaking could, in Argentina, occasionally come with a warning label.

There was one word in particular.

Carlos sat Carmen down.

Not casually. Not in passing. This was not a quick linguistic tip offered while someone was opening a bottle of wine.

This was an intervention.

One of the words he emphatically warned her not to use was the word coger.

Carmen, a fully credentialed Latina with a mother born and raised in Ecuador and a Spanish father who was, of all things, a Spanish teacher, had always understood coger to mean “to take” or “to pick up”—a perfectly respectable word in most of the Spanish-speaking world.

In Argentina, however, the word has another meaning.

A considerably more offensive one.

And then, some time later that evening, as our new Argentine friends began to arrive, nerves got the better of her.

The word escaped. It slipped out. Innocently, but with the uncertain pronunciation of someone who has just discovered that she may be standing on linguistic thin ice.

Then came the realization. You could almost hear the air leaving her body, slowly and steadily, like a balloon with a very small hole in it.

It came out with such ease, confidence and authority that you would have thought she was presenting a carefully prepared statement before the United Nations.

The moment the word left her mouth, however, she realized something was wrong.

The room went quiet.

The sort of quiet that makes you immediately question your existence on earth.

She had not, as it turned out, told anyone to “take” something.

She had apparently encouraged a certain part of someone’s anatomy to take its responsibilities a little more seriously.

It was not the sort of thing one wants to state while trying to make a good first impression on a roomful of strangers who, one hoped, might eventually become acquaintances and, if things went well, friends.

And certainly not after saying it with the serene confidence of someone whose father was a Spanish teacher, whose mother was from Ecuador, who had taken AP Spanish, and who had spent years believing she knew exactly what the word meant.

This is one of the more entertaining hazards of learning a language. You begin with the innocent belief that knowing more words will make communication easier.

Eventually, you discover that knowing more words can simply give you more opportunities to say something you really should not have said.

There is also concha.

In Ventura, California, I went to school whose parents blessed their little girls with the adorable name “Concha,” which means “Shell.” It was a perfectly ordinary and acceptable name.

Here in Argentina, the word has another meaning. One that makes it considerably less suitable as a name for a little girl.

This is not generally included in Spanish textbooks.

The textbooks teach you useful things like how to ask for a train station.

They do not necessarily tell you which words could produce an awkward silence at a dinner party.

For example, the name Randy is a perfectly acceptable, endearing form of Randall. In England, however, “randy” means sexually aroused. In polite company in London, you would never name a child Randy unless you had deliberately decided to consign him to a lifetime of raised eyebrows, knowing smirks, and introductions he would come to dread.

Then there are the ordinary words that change from country to country.

A bus can be an autobús, a camión, a colectivo or a bondi, depending on where you are.

A car can be a coche, carro or auto.

The same language is being spoken, but sometimes it feels as though each country has been given the basic version and then made its own modifications.

Argentine Spanish has also acquired a distinctly Italian flavour, particularly in the way people speak. The intonation rises and falls. The hands become involved. A simple exchange can occasionally look as though it is about to become an argument, even when everyone is perfectly happy.

When Carmen and I lived in Boston we heard a news report of a woman in the North End—the Italian section of the city—had been robbed in her home, tied up, and had her valuables stolen. When the police asked why she hadn't screamed for help, she replied, with complete seriousness, “I couldn't. My hands were tied!”

And that is one of the things I love about Argentine Spanish. It is expressive.

It is warm.

It can be dramatic.

And it is full of words that I understand perfectly well but would still hesitate to use.

Eventually, you stop trying to translate every single word in your head. You listen to the rhythm. You watch people’s faces. You tend to focus on raised eyebrows or facial twitches. You learn from your mistakes. At first it’s embarrassing, and eventually it makes its way into your husbands blog.

And you learn that studying Spanish is not quite the same thing as speaking Argentine Spanish.

It is a bit like learning to drive and then discovering that the roads have been designed by someone with a personal grudge against straight lines.

The Things You Don’t Expect

These are the things you don’t expect when you move to another country.

You expect the history.

You expect the monuments.

You expect to struggle with the language.

You do not necessarily expect to spend several years learning how to join a queue.

You do not expect a word you learned in Spanish class to suddenly become something you should never say in Argentina.

But gradually, these things become normal.

You ask who is last.

You begin to understand Argentine Spanish.

That may be one of the stranger things about living abroad.

You arrive thinking you are going to learn about another country.

Instead, you discover that many of the things you thought were simply “normal” were actually just the customs of the place where you happened to grow up.

A queue.

A word.

Argentina has a way of taking ordinary things and making them just unfamiliar enough to force you to look at them again.

And perhaps that is why I continue to enjoy living here.

Every so often, the country reminds me that I am still a foreigner.

Usually when I am standing in the wrong place or using the wrong word.

But I’m getting there.

One invisible queue or one dangerous word.

You arrive thinking you understand queues and the language.

Then Argentina teaches you that a queue may not be a queue and Spanish may not quite be Spanish.

And the more you learn, the more you realize that the things you once considered ordinary are often the most interesting things of all.

Keep the Suitcase Open

At our first meeting, the country manager, Juan, asked me a question.

“What do you know about insurance?”

The answer seemed obvious.

I’d insured every car I’d ever owned.

I’d had homeowners insurance.

Life insurance.

Mortgage insurance.

Of course I knew about insurance.

Then he smiled and asked a second question.

“What do you know about insurance in Argentina?”

Judging by my blank stare, he realized the answer was “not much.”

Without another word, he swung his chair around to the credenza behind his desk, pulled a DVD from one of the shelves, swung back around, slid it across the table, and said:

“Watch this, then come back and talk to me.”

The DVD was Carancho.

I was completely unprepared for Carancho.

It’s one of those films you can’t really prepare for, and its ending—which I won’t spoil—is distinctly Argentine. Unlike much of Hollywood cinema, where every thread is neatly tied up before the credits roll, Argentine films often leave you sitting with uncomfortable questions long after the screen goes dark.

Carancho is one of those films.

But what stayed with me wasn’t the plot.

It was Juan’s implication that this wasn’t merely entertainment.

This was a glimpse into a world that actually existed.

The Business of Misfortune

If you’ve followed this series, you’ve probably noticed a pattern.

Argentine cinema has a remarkable ability to entertain while quietly revealing something deeper about the country itself.

La Historia Oficial explored memory.

Nueve Reinas exposed the fragile nature of trust.

Carancho turns its attention to something even less comfortable:

What happens when tragedy becomes an industry.

The film follows Sosa, a disbarred lawyer operating on the margins of society.

Yes, Ricardo Darín again. Argentina has many outstanding actors, but Darín appears repeatedly in this series for much the same reason Meryl Streep appears so often on lists of great American films: he possesses a remarkable ability to disappear into almost any role. When a story demands intelligence, vulnerability, humor, determination, or moral complexity, he seems capable of delivering all of them with equal conviction.

In Argentina, a carancho is a bird of prey.

In everyday slang, it refers to someone who circles human misfortune looking for personal gain. In English we might refer to them as an ambulance chaser.

When traffic accidents occur, men like Sosa arrive almost as quickly as ambulances. Their objective is simple: secure legal clients before someone else does.

The accident is only the beginning.

The paperwork is where the money is.

A World Hidden in Plain Sight

One of the unsettling things about Carancho is how little of it feels exaggerated.

Traffic accidents generate insurance claims.

Insurance claims generate legal fees.

Medical treatment generates invoices.

Every signature has value.

Where money exists, people gather around it. Where misfortune creates money, opportunists are never far behind.

The film imagines an entire ecosystem feeding on moments of crisis.

Lawyers.

Hospital employees.

Doctors.

Police officers.

Insurance intermediaries.

Tow-truck operators.

Some are corrupt.

Some are honest.

Most exist somewhere in between.

That ambiguity is what makes the film so effective.

The story is not about a handful of villains.

It is about what happens when enough people begin accepting small compromises.

Eventually, the compromise becomes the system.

Survival Inside a Broken System

What gives Carancho its emotional power is that almost nobody wakes up intending to become the bad guy.

Sosa isn’t a monster.

He’s exhausted.

Disappointed.

Trying to survive.

Luján, the young emergency doctor he meets, is equally worn down. Endless shifts, constant pressure, and a healthcare system stretched to its limits have left her running on little more than determination.

Neither character dreams of becoming rich.

Neither is chasing power.

They are simply trying to make it through another day.

That may be the film’s most uncomfortable observation.

Desperation rarely arrives all at once.

It accumulates.

One unpaid bill.

One compromise.

One disappointment.

One bad decision justified as temporary.

Then another.

Until eventually the line between survival and surrender becomes difficult to see.

Argentina’s Shadow

Although rooted in Buenos Aires, Carancho speaks to something larger than Argentina.

Every country has places where institutions function imperfectly.

Every society contains people who profit from bureaucracy, confusion, and vulnerability.

Yet the film resonates particularly strongly in Argentina because it reflects a reality many people recognize.

For decades, Argentines have navigated economic crises, inflation, political instability, and institutions that do not always perform as citizens hope they will. We are a resilient society.

The result is a culture that often relies heavily on personal relationships, informal networks, and individual ingenuity.

Most of the time, those qualities are admirable.

Sometimes they create opportunities for exploitation.

Carancho lives in that uncomfortable space.

Why Carancho Matters

The goal of the Behind the Film series is not to review movies.

It is to understand what they reveal about the societies that produced them.

What makes Carancho so powerful is that it refuses to offer easy answers.

It doesn’t suggest that Argentina is uniquely corrupt.

Nor does it argue that everyone operating within these systems is dishonest.

Instead, it asks a more difficult question:

What happens when people become so busy surviving that they stop expecting institutions to protect them?

That question extends far beyond insurance claims and traffic accidents.

It touches healthcare.

Politics.

Law enforcement.

Employment.

Every aspect of modern life depends upon a degree of trust.

When that trust weakens, individuals often find themselves carrying burdens that institutions were meant to shoulder.

And when people begin to believe that institutions are no longer capable of delivering justice, some may eventually conclude that justice must be pursued personally.

That is the deeper anxiety behind the recent case of Luigi Mangione—not that one individual’s actions can be reduced to a simple explanation, but that the reaction to them revealed how profoundly some people have lost faith in the institutions meant to protect them.

The point is not to equate his actions with the world of Carancho.

The point is that both raise a similar, deeply unsettling question:

What happens to a society when people stop believing that the systems around them can deliver justice?

That is what Carancho captures so brilliantly.

Not corruption itself.

But the exhaustion that corruption leaves behind.

Beyond the Film

One of the things I’ve discovered living in Argentina is that the country’s most revealing stories often exist in places visitors never see.

Not in the grand avenues or famous landmarks.

But in the spaces where ordinary people are trying to navigate complicated realities.

That is why films like Carancho matter.

They don’t simply entertain.

They help explain a country.

You have packed everything you own into a suitcase. You speak no Spanish. You have no job waiting for you, no friends waiting at the docks, and no real idea what will happen once you step ashore.

You have, however, made a decision.

You are leaving.

As your ship finally enters the port of Buenos Aires, the people waiting for you are not asking whether you belong here. They are asking what they can do to help you begin.

It sounds, in some ways, surprisingly modern.

It was Argentina more than a century ago.

Immigration is now one of the most politically charged subjects in the world. Governments argue about borders, vetting, quotas, visas, security checks, integration, assimilation, and who should—or should not—be allowed to enter.

But in the second half of the nineteenth century, Argentina took a very different approach.

It looked at its enormous territory, its fertile land, its rivers, its growing economy and, rather awkwardly, at the relatively small number of people living in all of it.

Then it decided that what the country needed most was people.

Lots of people.

So Argentina did something that seems almost extraordinary from a modern perspective.

It invited the world to come.

And millions did.

A Country Looking for People

Argentina in the mid-1800s was not yet the country we recognize today.

It had vast grasslands, fertile soil, enormous rivers and considerable natural wealth. What it did not have was a sufficiently large population to develop all of it.

What it lacked was people.

The Constitution of 1853 reflected this concern. Article 25 specifically encouraged European immigration and called on the federal government to support people who came to cultivate the land, develop industry and contribute their knowledge and skills.

The idea had already been expressed by one of Argentina’s most influential thinkers, Juan Bautista Alberdi.

His famous phrase became almost a national slogan:

Gobernar es poblar.

“To govern is to populate.”

It is difficult to imagine a modern politician winning an election with “We need more people” as a central campaign message. Yet for Argentina at the time, the logic was straightforward.

A country with enormous territory and too few inhabitants needed people to build farms, railways, businesses, factories, ports and cities.

The country did not simply hope that immigrants would arrive.

It went looking for them.

Selling a New Life

Agents promoted Argentina abroad. Steamship companies advertised passages. Letters from earlier immigrants circulated among families and communities in Europe.

For millions of people living with poverty, political instability or limited opportunities in Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe, Germany, France and elsewhere, Argentina offered the possibility of a new life.

Of course, immigration is rarely quite as simple as the romantic version suggests.

People did not generally cross an ocean because they were having a wonderful time at home and fancied a change of scenery.

They came because they were looking for something: work, land, security, opportunity, or simply a future that seemed increasingly difficult to find where they were.

And they came in extraordinary numbers.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, Buenos Aires had become one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.

Italian voices mixed with Spanish. French architecture appeared beside British-built railways. Jewish communities, Arab merchants, Welsh settlers, Germans, Croatians, Armenians and people from across Eastern Europe all added their own languages, customs and traditions to the country.

Argentina was not becoming less Argentine.

It was becoming Argentine in a new way.

The Hotel That Welcomed a Continent

For many newcomers, the first stop after arriving in Buenos Aires was the Hotel de Inmigrantes.

Despite the name, it was not a hotel in the sense most of us would recognize. There was no charming reception desk, no complimentary breakfast buffet and certainly no concierge asking whether you preferred a room with a view.

It was a state-run reception centre designed to receive, process and temporarily house large numbers of new arrivals.

People disembarked from their ships. They underwent medical examinations. They were fed and given somewhere to sleep. Officials helped connect them with employment.

Some remained for only a few days. Others stayed longer.

But the purpose was movement.

The Hotel de Inmigrantes was not intended to be the final destination. It was a place between one life and the next.

From there, people might find work on farms, on the railways, in factories, ports, construction or domestic service. Some remained in Buenos Aires, where industry, trade and construction were transforming the city. Others moved inland, following the expanding railway network and the demand for workers across the country.

There was no single immigrant experience.

A farmer from Italy, a merchant from Syria, a labourer from Spain and a family from Eastern Europe might all have arrived through the same doors, but what happened next could be completely different.

What mattered was that the doors were open.

Argentina’s Ellis Island

In the United States, Ellis Island has become almost synonymous with immigration and the search for a new life.

For me, however, Ellis Island is more than a symbol.

It is personal.

Several years ago, I stood in front of the records and found my grandfather’s name.

There he was.

His name. His age. His date of birth.

And beside him, the names of his parents.

They had arrived from Hungary and entered Ellis Island on May 14, 1901.

I had known, of course, that my family had immigrated to the United States. I had known the basic outline of the story. But there is something different about seeing a name written in an official record. History suddenly stops being something that happened to other people.

There it is.

Your grandfather.

A toddler, being transported to a place he had never seen before, with his parents beside him and an entire future still unwritten.

I often wonder what that day was like.

Were they afraid?

Did they understand what was waiting for them, or were they simply hoping that life in America would be better than the life they had left behind?

How much did the journey cost them—not only financially, but emotionally?

What did they have to sell, sacrifice or leave behind to make the journey possible?

Who did they say goodbye to, knowing that they might never see them again?

What did they bring with them, apart from whatever they could carry?

A suitcase, perhaps. A few possessions. Some Hungarian words that would eventually be joined by English. Memories of a place they had left behind. And the hope—always the hope—that the decision would prove to have been worth it.

I will never know the answers.

The people who could have told me are gone.

And that may be one of the strangest things about discovering your family’s history. You can sometimes find the exact date when your ancestors arrived in a new country, but not what they were thinking as they stood on the other side of the ocean.

You can find their names.

You can find their ages.

You can find the date they arrived.

But the most important parts of the story—the fear, the excitement, the doubt, the homesickness—are often left unwritten.

That is why immigration history has always felt particularly personal to me.

Behind every name in an arrival record was a human being who had made an enormous decision. Someone had left a familiar place and stepped into an uncertain future.

My grandfather and his parents were just three of the millions who did exactly that.

And standing there, looking at their names, I found myself wondering about the experience of people arriving in Argentina.

Argentina had its own great gateway.

Between the late nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth, millions of immigrants arrived in the country. They did not simply change their own lives. They changed Argentina.

You can still see the evidence everywhere.

Italian surnames.

Spanish cafés.

German clubs.

Welsh tea houses.

Synagogues.

Orthodox churches.

Lebanese bakeries.

The city became one of the world’s great cultural mosaics.

And, as anyone who has tried to explain Argentine identity will quickly discover, the question of what it means to be “Argentine” is not necessarily made simpler by the fact that your surname might be Italian, your grandparents might have come from Spain, your favourite food might have Middle Eastern origins and your city’s architecture might have been heavily influenced by France and Britain.

Somehow, it all became Argentine.

A Nation Built on Movement

There was also a practical reason Argentina needed immigrants.

The country was expanding rapidly.

Wheat exports were growing. Railways were spreading across the country. Cities were expanding. Agriculture, construction, industry and transport all needed workers.

In that environment, an arriving immigrant was not necessarily seen as someone competing for a limited number of opportunities.

They were part of the solution to the country’s central problem.

Argentina had land.

It had resources.

It had enormous ambitions.

What it needed was labour and people capable of transforming potential into reality.

The immigration system was therefore closely connected to the economic development of the country.

The idea was not simply: Come here and live.

It was closer to: Come here and help build the place.

The Legacy

Nearly every Argentine family has an immigration story.

Some arrived with money and plans. Others arrived with very little beyond a suitcase and a name written on a piece of paper.

They brought trades, recipes, languages, music, religious traditions, family customs and, presumably, strong opinions about how things should be done.

Over time, all of this became part of Argentina.

The country that emerged was not simply the result of the people who had been here before immigration began. It was also shaped by the millions who arrived afterwards.

History tends to remember the wars countries fought, the presidents who ruled them and the revolutions that changed them.

Perhaps we should also spend more time remembering the doors they opened.

The Last Stop

The former Hotel de Inmigrantes still stands in Buenos Aires today.

It no longer receives steamships full of exhausted newcomers. Its long corridors no longer echo with the sound of thousands of people speaking dozens of different languages, all trying to work out what happens next.

Today, the building is home to a museum and archive.

But it is not difficult to imagine what those corridors must once have felt like.

The excitement.

The uncertainty.

The exhaustion after weeks at sea.

The smell of the river.

The noise of unfamiliar languages.

The bewildering possibility of standing in a new country with everything you own inside a suitcase.

Every person who arrived carried a different story.

Together, they helped write Argentina’s.

Released in 2000 and starring Ricardo Darín and Gastón Pauls, it is one of Argentina’s greatest cinematic achievements. It is a crime film, a comedy, a character study, and a portrait of a society where trust has become something fragile.

On the surface, it is a story about two con artists trying to pull off the scam of a lifetime.

But beneath the deception is something much more interesting.

A country navigating uncertainty.

A society where everyone is looking for an advantage.

And a question that feels as relevant today as it did when the film was released:

Who is really fooling whom?

Buenos Aires: A City of Opportunity and Suspicion

The film opens in a Buenos Aires that feels immediately recognizable.

Busy streets.

Small cafés.

Convenience stores.

People rushing through their daily routines.

But beneath the ordinary rhythm of the city is another world operating quietly.

A world of tricks, shortcuts, and people searching for ways to get ahead.

This is where we meet Marcos, a seasoned con artist played by Ricardo Darín, and Juan, a young newcomer still learning the craft.

Their first encounter is almost accidental.

Juan attempts a small scam.

Marcos notices.

Instead of exposing him, he recruits him.

What follows is a single day that becomes a masterclass in deception.

The Art of Survival

One reason Nueve Reinas resonated so deeply with Argentine audiences is that the film understands a particular national reality: people often become experts at navigating uncertainty.

Argentines have lived through periods of inflation, currency controls, political upheaval, and economic crises that have required constant adaptation. In such an environment, knowing how to read people, spot opportunities, and avoid being taken advantage of can feel less like a talent and more like a survival skill.

Marcos embodies this world. He is not simply a criminal. He is someone who has learned to navigate a society where the rules often seem unstable and where appearances can be deceptive.

The film exaggerates these traits for dramatic effect, but it also reflects a familiar cultural experience. Most Argentines have heard stories about questionable deals, informal arrangements, or people who managed to get ahead through ingenuity rather than strict adherence to the rules.

The result is a film that feels authentic even when its events become extraordinary.

The Nine Queens

The famous stamps that give the film its title are, in many ways, beside the point.

What matters is the value people assign to them.

Argentina has experienced repeated moments when confidence itself became a form of currency. Trust in banks, trust in governments, trust in the peso, trust in promises—these have all been tested at various points in modern history.

By the time Nueve Reinas arrived in cinemas, many Argentines had already developed a healthy skepticism toward anything that seemed too good to be true.

The film captures that mindset perfectly. Every opportunity contains a hidden question:

¿Dónde está la trampa?

Where’s the catch?

It is a question that many Argentines have learned to ask instinctively, repeatedly.

Argentina at the Edge of Crisis

Part of what makes Nueve Reinas fascinating is when it was released.

Argentina in 2000 was entering one of the darkest economic periods in its modern history.

The country had spent years struggling with economic problems, rising unemployment, and growing frustration with political leaders. The dramatic financial collapse known as the 2001 economic crisis was approaching.

People were losing faith.

Not only in banks and politicians.

In institutions themselves.

The film captures that atmosphere without becoming a political statement.

It shows a society where skepticism has become a survival skill.

Everyone seems to be asking the same question:

Can I trust this person?

Can I trust this deal?

Can I trust the system?

And perhaps most importantly:

Can I trust myself?

Marcos: A Product of His Times

Ricardo Darín has built a career playing men who are intelligent but complicated.

Marcos may be one of his most memorable creations.

He is charming.

Funny.

Quick-thinking.

Almost impossible not to like.

And yet, there is always something unsettling beneath the surface.

The audience enjoys watching him work.

Then occasionally remembers what kind of work he is doing.

That tension is the heart of the character.

Marcos represents a particular kind of survival instinct.

The ability to adapt.

To read a situation.

To find an opening.

Those qualities can create entrepreneurs.

They can create leaders.

They can also create criminals.

The difference often depends on where someone chooses to draw the line.

More Than a Crime Story

The film certainly explores universal themes of greed, pride, ambition, and trust. Those elements help explain why it continues to attract audiences far beyond Argentina.

Yet its lasting appeal comes from something more specific.

Nueve Reinas understands the tension between trust and suspicion that often shapes everyday life. People need to trust one another in order to do business, build relationships, and create communities. At the same time, experience teaches them to remain cautious.

The film lives in that uncomfortable space between confidence and doubt.

The Buenos Aires of Small Details

Unlike films that showcase the city’s famous landmarks, Nueve Reinas lives in everyday Buenos Aires.

The streets. The cafés. The apartments The hotels. The conversations. The endless negotiation of urban life.

It captures a city where people are constantly interacting, debating, joking, bargaining, and observing one another.

For visitors, Buenos Aires can feel wonderfully theatrical.

Nueve Reinas suggests that perhaps some of that theatricality exists because Argentines are naturally skilled storytellers.

Everyone has an opinion.

Everyone has an explanation.

Everyone has a version of events.

The challenge is discovering which version is closest to reality.

The film also captures something familiar to anyone who has spent time in Argentina: the importance of personal relationships. Rules matter, but people matter more. Conversations open doors. Recommendations carry weight. Trust is built person by person rather than automatically granted to institutions.

That social dynamic gives the film much of its realism.

Why the Film Endures

One reason the film remains so highly regarded is that it rewards careful observation.

Viewers often finish the film wanting to discuss it immediately—not because of what happens, but because of what it says about perception, trust, and certainty.

The story encourages us to question our assumptions and to recognize how easily confidence can be manipulated.

That message felt particularly powerful in Argentina at the turn of the millennium, when many people were beginning to question institutions, promises, and economic certainties that had once seemed reliable.

Why Nueve Reinas Matters

It would be easy to describe Nueve Reinas as a clever crime thriller.

It is also a remarkably effective portrait of Argentina at the end of the twentieth century.

Beneath the scams and sharp dialogue lies a society grappling with uncertainty, where trust had become increasingly complicated and adaptability was often essential.

The film captures something that many Argentines understood instinctively: when confidence in institutions weakens, people place greater confidence in themselves, their instincts, and their ability to navigate an unpredictable world.

More than twenty-five years after its release, Nueve Reinas remains relevant because it is not merely about deception.

It is about the relationship between trust and survival.

That is why it deserves a place in any conversation about modern Argentine culture.

The film does more than entertain.

It reveals how a society sees itself at a particular moment in time.

And that is precisely what great cinema does when art begins to imitate life.

Beyond the Film

The goal of the Behind the Film series is not simply to discuss great movies, but to explore what they reveal about the societies that created them.

One of the things I’ve discovered living in Argentina is that the country’s greatest stories often exist in the gray areas. The same qualities that can create frustration—passion, improvisation, skepticism, and an ability to find solutions—are also part of what makes Argentina fascinating.

Nueve Reinas captures those contradictions beautifully. It does not present Argentina as a country to admire or criticize, but as a place full of people adapting, negotiating, and navigating an unpredictable world.

That is what makes Argentine cinema so compelling. The best films do more than tell stories; they reveal how a society sees itself.

Not 6:11.

God forbid, not 6:23.

Six.

By 5:59, my mother would have dinner on the table. My father would have changed out of his work clothes, washed his hands, and taken his seat. Moments later, Christine Lund and Jerry Dunphy would appear on the television with the six o’clock news, and another Southern California evening would unfold exactly as expected.

This seemed perfectly normal.

In fact, most people from the United States consider six o’clock a civilized hour for dinner.

Some don’t even wait that long.

Florida, for example, has elevated early dining to an art form. Entire restaurant business models revolve around the “Early Bird Special,” a phrase which loosely translates as, “We would like to eat before dark and be in bed by eight.”

My mother used to say that Florida was filled with old people and their parents.

At the time, I laughed. Now, after fifteen years in Argentina, I understand that when people from the US have dinner, Argentines are having merienda.

An Argentine merienda and a California Happy Hour are diabolically opposed, but they are united by a shared commitment to dishonesty. One is called “just a snack.” The other is called “just drinks.” Argentines present pastries, toast, dulce de leche; enough carbohydrates and sugar to render me comatose. Californians consume enough cocktails and fried appetizers to eliminate any practical need for dinner and call it "just drinks."

My first clue to the difference in the dining hour came shortly after moving to Buenos Aires.

I noticed that restaurants remained strangely empty at times when I would normally expect them to be busy.

At seven o’clock, waiters stood around polishing glasses.

At eight o’clock, tables remained available.

At nine o’clock, one could stroll into almost any restaurant in the city and choose a table as casually as selecting a seat on an empty bus.

The restaurants weren’t failing. The Argentines simply hadn’t arrived yet.

The realization was unsettling. Who exactly was eating all these dinners? And more importantly, when?

The answer arrived soon after our arrival in Buenos Aires courtesy of my friend Brett.

Brett was hosting an asado and kindly invited everyone over at 9:00 p.m.

I paused, for what seemed like an eternity, my mouth open in disbelief.

“Nine?” I finally managed. “At night? 9:00 p.m.?”

At nine o’clock, I don’t go out.

At nine o'clock I am in and begin negotiating with gravity, a comfortable chair, and a rerun of Seinfeld I've already seen often enough to recite the dialogue.

Nevertheless, determined to embrace local culture, I arrived promptly at nine.

This was my second mistake.

The first mistake had been assuming the invitation time meant people would arrive at that time.

The second was discovering that I was not merely the first guest.

I was early enough to qualify as unpaid labor.

The parrilla was still being set up. Instead of dinner, I was greeted by a display of raw beef that made me wonder whether Brett was hosting an asado or opening a butcher shop.

Chairs were being arranged.

Carlos had been sent out to find charcoal.

Dominick was giving each bottle of Malbec the sort of attention most people reserve for a newborn baby.

An invitation for 9:00 p.m., I learned, actually means: “Arrival before 10:00 p.m. may be interpreted as overly desperate.”

The first chorizos appeared sometime around 10:30.

By then, a few glasses of Malbec had softened my concerns regarding basic human feeding schedules.

The evening progressed beautifully.

Stories were told.

Wine was consumed.

Meat arrived in waves.

And around 11:30, Carmen and I surrendered and decided it was time to leave before the meat coma advanced to its final stage and we became permanent fixtures of the patio furniture.

As we were saying our goodbyes, Pablo and Camila were just arriving.

Not apologetically.

Not hurriedly.

Not with the embarrassed expressions of people who had shown up hours after the advertised start time only to discover they were right on time. They arrived with the relaxed confidence of people who apparently believed the evening was just getting started.

Which, in fairness, it was.

Years later, after becoming somewhat conditioned to Argentine dining habits, I returned to California to visit my sister in Ventura.

I had errands to run that day, so my sister told me to meet her and Larry later at their favorite Mexican restaurant.

Around eight o’clock my cellphone rang.

Debbie sounded concerned.

Actually, concerned is too mild a word.

She sounded as though a missing-person report was only moments away from being filed.

“Where are you?” she whispered into the phone.

I explained that I was on my way.

There was a pause.

Then came the words that revealed how thoroughly Argentina had rewired my brain.

“But… the restaurant closes at nine!”

Closes?

At nine?

I looked at my watch.

In Buenos Aires, restaurants are still stretching and warming up at nine.

At 9:00 p.m. in Argentina, the evening is merely clearing its throat.

When I arrived at 8:40, my sister looked at me as though I had just wandered onto the Titanic carrying a suitcase and asking which way the dining room was.

“Order quickly,” she whispered under her breath.

The waitress was not pleased.

My meal landed on the table with a thud and such speed that I suspect it had been prepared before I entered the building.

Before I could ask for salsa, another margarita, or possibly emotional support, she vanished.

At exactly 9:04, the chef marched past our table carrying a trash bag and gave me a look that seemed to say:

“You had all day, amigo.”

Over the course of the next several minutes I was treated to the glaring stare of our waitress who saw me as the reason she would miss tonight’s episode of The Housewives of Bakersfield. There was a certain urgency to the service that suggested my understanding of a 9:00 p.m. closing time differed significantly from hers.

At 9:27, we stepped outside to discover that Ventura had become remarkably deserted. The restaurant was empty, the streets were quiet, and the city workers were well underway in their nightly task of rolling up the sidewalks. Had we lingered much longer, I suspect they would have started collecting the streetlights as well.

Growing up, I thought dinner was about eating.

Argentina taught me that dinner is often about something else entirely.

It is about lingering.

About conversation.

About refusing to glance at the clock.

About treating a meal as an event rather than a task.

The difference becomes especially clear when observing families.

An American family arriving at a restaurant with children at 10:30 p.m. would likely trigger concern from social services.

In Buenos Aires, you’ll find families cheerfully settling into dinner at that hour.

Children aren’t being dragged through the evening.

The evening includes them.

And then there was Spain.

Years ago, Carmen traveled there with her mom and headed down to dinner at seven o’clock.

The dining room was empty.

Not empty as in “a few tables available.”

Empty as in “the waiter hasn’t even arrived yet.”

When he finally did appear, Carmen helped him set up the dining room.

By eight o’clock, hunger had overcome dignity and they became the first customers.

After finishing their meal, dessert, and coffee, they triumphantly requested the bill and headed back to the hotel.

As they walked out, families were just beginning to arrive.

Night after night they tried everything.

Afternoon naps.

Pre-dinner drinks.

Strategic planning.

Nothing worked.

Every evening they found themselves leaving restaurants just as nine-year-old Juancito and eleven-year-old Gabriela were arriving for dinner with their parents.

By the end of the trip, they wore the unmistakable expression of people who had lost a cultural battle they never realized they were fighting.

None of this prepared me for Argentina.

Fifteen years later, I’ve adjusted.

Mostly.

I still occasionally glance at my watch when someone suggests dinner at ten.

I still find myself calculating how many glasses of Malbec I’ll have to succumb to until the first course appears.

And if I’m invited to an asado that begins at nine, I’ll most certainly take a nap first.

But I’ve also come to appreciate something about the Latin approach to dinner.

People from the US schedule meals around life.

Argentines schedule life around meals.

One treats dinner as something to schedule, while the other treats it as something to savor.

And while my stomach may occasionally disagree with the timing, I have to admit they might be onto something.

Just don’t invite me for dinner at 9.

I’m still estadounidense after all.

Manhattan dominates the foreground.

Across the Hudson sits New Jersey (my birthplace, though I stubbornly maintain I was conceived in Connecticut), included almost as an afterthought—something for New Yorkers to look past on their way to the rest of America.

Beyond that, the United States stretches westward.

Then the Pacific.

Then Asia, faint and distant, at the edge of the frame.

It is, of course, a caricature—gentle, affectionate, familiar. But it also points to something larger. We tend to assume the stories closest to us are the ones that matter most.

Everything else recedes into blur.

Yet some of history’s most extraordinary chapters were written precisely in that blur.

Beyond the Frame: Buenos Aires

Thursday, 19 September 1974.

Just after 7:30 a.m.

A black Ford Falcon Deluxe moves through Avenida del Libertador, caught in the slow geometry of the morning commute.

Inside, three executives are on their way to work.

Nearby, nineteen armed men are waiting.

A traffic policeman steps into the road.

He raises his hand.

The Ford turns off the avenue.

There is no hesitation. No alarm. Only routine.

Nearby, telephone workers stand beside an open utility truck, as if repairing underground cables. The city continues to behave like a city.

It isn’t.

It is the last ordinary decision anyone in that car will make.

A pickup blocks the road ahead. Another slams into the rear.

The “policeman” is not a policeman.

The “workers” are not workers.

Submachine guns appear where tools had been seconds before. The ambush lasts less than a minute. The driver is killed. A company executive is killed.

The Born brothers are forced into a waiting car that merges back into the morning traffic as if nothing has happened.

For nine months, they disappear entirely.

Stories Outside the Frame

Growing up in the United States, I assumed I had received a reasonably complete education in twentieth-century history.

The wars were there. The assassinations were there. The defining moments were there.

Neatly arranged. Contained.

But much of what happened outside that frame remained invisible.

Americans of a certain generation remember Patty Hearst.

The Symbionese Liberation Army.

A kidnapping that became a national obsession—part crime, part televised psychological drama, ending in her reappearance as “Tania,” rifle in hand, during a bank robbery.

A case that introduced a generation to the unsettling idea that captivity could reshape identity.

What I did not know was that, in the same period, another kidnapping had taken place in Buenos Aires that would dwarf Hearst’s in scale, duration, and ransom value.

It was not an exception. It was part of a pattern.

Patty Hearst.

The Getty ransom.

Political violence running like a low current through the decade.

And then Argentina kept appearing.

Again.

And again.

Jorge and Juan Born.

At first, it felt implausible.

Then it became difficult to ignore.

These were no longer isolated crimes.

They were connected by something unseen.

A pattern.

An Entirely Different Kind of War

To understand it, you have to step into Argentina’s most turbulent decade.

The early 1970s were defined by political fragmentation, economic instability, and escalating confrontation between armed revolutionary groups and the state.

Among them, the Montoneros and the ERP were the most prominent.

They believed political transformation would not come through elections, but through force.

Revolution, however, requires infrastructure. Weapons. Safe houses. False identities. Logistics.

Money.

Kidnapping became a solution.

Not chaotic. Systematic. A parallel economy of political violence. Money did not need to be stolen.

It arrived through negotiation.

The Executive Lottery Nobody Wanted

The targets were rarely random. They were corporate executives. Industrial leaders. Foreign managers. Senior figures in multinational firms operating in Argentina.

Kodak.

Firestone.

Mercedes-Benz.

Esso.

British American Tobacco.

The most dangerous part of the working day was no longer the office.

It was the commute.

One executive was kidnapped twice.

Surviving once offered no immunity. Only delay.

Hollywood would have rejected it.

Argentina was already living it.

The Kidnapping of the Century

The ambush itself was brief.

Its consequences were not.

What followed was a prolonged negotiation between one of Latin America’s largest business dynasties and an armed guerrilla organization operating through a network of clandestine safe houses in Buenos Aires.

A ransom widely reported at around US$60 million in 1974—the equivalent of more than US$400 million today.

Among the largest ever recorded.

Some accounts also reference additional political and logistical concessions, though the details remain disputed.

Jorge and Juan Born were held for approximately nine months.

Released in June 1975.

The Price Beyond Money

The kidnappings were not isolated events.

They were a system.

A method.

A funding mechanism that reshaped how risk was calculated in corporate Argentina.

Executives changed routines. Security budgets expanded. Foreign investment decisions were reconsidered.

Some companies left entirely.

When One Crisis Became Another

The kidnappings were symptoms of instability.

Not its conclusion.

In March 1976, the military seized power. What followed became known as the Dirty War. Thousands detained without trial. Thousands tortured. Thousands disappeared.

A conflict that expanded far beyond its original targets—and far beyond its original logic.

Looking Beyond the Horizon

Perhaps that New Yorker cover understood something universal.

We assume the world is centered where we stand.

That what we see is what matters most.

Americans remember Patty Hearst.

Britons remember the Great Train Robbery.

Italians remember Aldo Moro.

But in Argentina, an entire ecosystem of political kidnapping unfolded with comparatively little global attention.

The deeper I look, the more often the same reaction appears.

And sometimes, the most extraordinary stories are the ones that begin just beyond the edge of the frame.

If you speak English, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to Hollywood. But beyond that lies an extraordinary world of cinema that rarely crosses linguistic borders. Some films become international successes. Others briefly appear on a streaming service before vanishing again. Many never reach English-speaking audiences at all.

And that’s a pity, because some of the finest films ever made aren’t simply entertaining—they help explain a country.

If I could recommend just one Argentine film to someone who wanted to understand this nation beyond its steaks, tango, and grand European architecture, it wouldn’t be an action film or a sweeping historical epic.

It would be La Historia Oficial (The Official Story).

Released in 1985, barely two years after Argentina emerged from military rule, it became the first Latin American film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Yet awards alone don’t explain its importance. La Historia Oficial wasn't merely admired. It became part of a national conversation about memory, truth, and the unbearable cost of silence. It arrived when Argentina was beginning to look in the mirror—and not everyone was ready for what they saw.

To appreciate the film, you first have to understand a different story.

Imagine that your daughter is expecting her first child.

You celebrate the news together. You wonder whether the baby will inherit your daughter's smile or her husband's eyes. You buy clothes that seem impossibly small. You imagine the first time you hold your grandchild, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the questions only a child can ask, the laughter that will fill your home, and the profound joy of watching a part of your daughter live on in another generation.

Then your daughter disappears.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just absence.

Weeks become months. Months become years. People gently suggest that it’s time to move on, to accept the unbearable possibility that she is never coming home. But another question refuses to leave you.

What happened to the baby?

Was the child born?

Is your grandchild alive?

Does someone else know their real name?

Would you even recognize them if they walked past you in the street?

For hundreds of Argentine families, these were not impossible questions born from grief.

They were real.

Between 1976 and 1983, Argentina lived under a military dictatorship that carried out what became known as the Dirty War. Thousands of people were abducted by state security forces and simply vanished. Many were young men and women accused—sometimes on the flimsiest of suspicions—of opposing the regime. Among them were pregnant women.

Historical investigations, court testimony, and later criminal trials revealed a chapter of this period that remains almost impossible to comprehend. Some imprisoned women gave birth in clandestine detention centers before their babies were taken away. Many of those children were placed with other families under false identities, while their mothers disappeared forever.

It is difficult to imagine a more complete theft.

Not only was a life taken.

A history was taken.

A name.

A family.

A future.

Some children grew up never knowing that somewhere, perhaps only a few kilometres away, grandparents searched for them year after year, refusing to believe they had vanished forever.

Those grandparents became one of the most extraordinary groups in modern Argentine history.

Every Thursday, they walked around the Plaza de Mayo carrying photographs instead of answers. They had no government files, no access to military records, and no certainty that the children were even alive. They possessed only memory and an astonishing refusal to surrender hope.

Decades later, advances in DNA testing would help reunite many of those children—now adults—with the families that had spent years searching for them. Every recovered identity became both a joyful reunion and a heartbreaking reminder of how much had been stolen.

This was the Argentina into which La Historia Oficial arrived.

It did not set out to accuse.

It did not preach.

It did something far more courageous.

It asked what happens when ordinary people begin to suspect that the comfortable stories they’ve always believed may not be the whole truth.

That question lies at the heart of the film, and it’s one of the reasons it remains as powerful today as it was more than forty years ago.

When the Official Story Was No Longer Enough

It would have been easy for La Historia Oficial to become a courtroom drama or a political thriller. Instead, it chooses a far more intimate path.

The film follows Alicia, a respected history teacher in Buenos Aires whose comfortable life begins to shift as seemingly ordinary questions refuse to go away. The brilliance of the screenplay lies in its restraint. Rather than shouting its message, it trusts the audience to feel the growing weight of uncertainty alongside her. As viewers, we aren’t handed a neat explanation; we’re invited to wrestle with the same unsettling doubts.

That is what makes the film so extraordinary.

It isn’t really about politics.

It’s about conscience.

It asks what happens when the stories we’ve always accepted begin to crack, and whether love is strong enough to survive the truth. In doing so, it avoids simple heroes and villains. Instead, it reminds us that history is often lived by ordinary people who don’t immediately recognize the forces shaping their lives.

Watching the film today, more than forty years after its release, is a different experience than it was in 1985. We now know much more about the dictatorship, the disappeared, and the painstaking work of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo to recover the identities of stolen children. Through advances in DNA science, well over a hundred men and women have discovered that the names they grew up with were not their own, reuniting with grandparents who had spent decades refusing to abandon hope.

Each reunion is both a celebration and a heartbreak. It reminds us that history is never entirely past. Sometimes it waits patiently for someone willing to ask one more question.

Perhaps that’s why La Historia Oficial remains so powerful. It tells a uniquely Argentine story, yet its questions belong to all of us.

How well do we know the stories we inherit?

What truths have been quietly buried beneath comfortable assumptions?

And what do we owe the past when it finally asks to be heard?

Those questions are as relevant today as they were when the film first appeared on cinema screens in a country still learning how to speak about its deepest wounds.

More than forty years later, La Historia Oficial is no longer simply an award-winning Argentine film. It has become part of the country’s collective memory—a reminder that healing does not begin when all the answers are found, but when people find the courage to ask the questions.
