I don’t remember exactly what Levi wrote, but I remember reading it and thinking: Wait, adults can still do that? Not softball. Not some hypercompetitive men’s league filled with 24 year olds who are still convinced the Rangers might discover them. Baseball. Actual baseball, with gloves and wood bats and people standing around in the outfield talking about their knees.

So I reached out to the Friendly Baseball League in Fort Worth, and that’s how I met Mark Zubizarreta, which is an unnecessarily long way to spell Zubi. He has a Rollie Fingers mustache, an apparently unlimited supply of energy, and a pretty simple philosophy about joining his baseball league.

Just show up. Bring a glove. If you don’t have a glove, that’s OK, we have extras.

So I showed up.

There were no tryouts. Nobody asked for my Baseball Reference page. They just picked captains and divided up teams the way we did at recess when we were kids. Everybody hits. Every inning, everybody finds a position and runs out there. Maybe you play shortstop one inning and right field the next. Maybe you play somewhere you haven’t played since you were 12. Then you come back to the dugout, talk baseball, make fun of each other and wait for your next turn.

Nobody is getting scouted. Nobody is getting a scholarship. Nobody’s dad is screaming at an umpire about a strike call.

It’s just baseball.

That was four or five years ago, and one of the great unexpected things about Friendly Baseball, and playing for the Fort Worth Panthers, is how many people I’ve met who I otherwise never would have known. We have different jobs, different backgrounds, different ages, different everything, really. There is no logical reason many of our paths ever should have crossed except that we all still like the feeling of throwing a baseball around.

Zubi deserves a lot of credit for that. He has a remarkable ability to find people who understand what the whole thing is supposed to be about, and maybe more importantly, keep away the people who don’t. You can be good. You can be bad. You can be young. You can be old. None of that really matters as long as you’re there for the right reasons.

Baseball and friendship.

Brief aside about Zubi: I don’t believe he sleeps. He has a wife and a young child, plays baseball, organizes and manages baseball leagues all week, plays hockey and has two jobs. I have one job, one family and one reconstructed knee and frequently feel like I need a nap around 2:30.

Zubi is an A plus human.

Anyway, last December I got a message from him.

“Hey, do you want to play at the Field of Dreams in August?”

Now, I am not what you would call a long-range planner. I’m occasionally unsure what I’m doing later that afternoon. So my response was something like, “Mark, I’m not sure what I’m doing tomorrow, but that sounds cool.”

He asked if my brother Kevin might want to come. Absolutely. Send him an invitation and I’ll hound him until he says yes. Then I asked if my son Ben could come. Sure. And before long, Kevin, Ben, my nephew Jared and I were all signed up.

We were going to Iowa. We were going to walk out of the corn. We were going to play baseball at the Field of Dreams. Team names were based on historic Iowa baseball teams, and uniforms ordered.

And then, about a week later, my knee exploded.

I was at Texas Rangers Fantasy Camp, and I know many of you have heard this story before, so I’ll give you the abbreviated version: Fantasy Camp was fantastic right up until the moment it wasn’t.

I had actually hit a stand-up triple off the wall earlier, and I stayed at third instead of trying to score because I was being smart. Save the hamstrings. Don’t be a hero. Understand that Bruce Bochy was probably not hiding behind the dugout with a contract.

Then came a routine fly ball.

I took two steps backward and heard two pops. The ball hit the ground, then I hit the ground, and then came the sound you absolutely do not want to hear while lying on a baseball field: the collective gasp from both dugouts.

The trainer, Kate, walked me back to the dugout, wrapped up the leg and told me I was done for the day. This seemed like a perfectly reasonable medical diagnosis right up until about an hour later, when my brain began telling me that perhaps everything was fine.

The knee hurt. It had made two popping sounds. I had collapsed on the field.

But, you know, maybe I was OK.

So I led off the next game, hit a ball down the line that was a no-doubt double and did not make it out of the batter’s box.

OK.

Maybe I wasn’t fine.

I watched the rest of Fantasy Camp and eventually made it home with a knee roughly the size of a cantaloupe. After the MRIs and doctor’s appointments and all the other fun that comes when you are a middle-aged man who suddenly believes he is 17 again, I learned I needed two procedures: MACI and an MPFL reconstruction.

The simplest explanation is that the MACI was to repair damaged cartilage in my kneecap. It’s actually a fascinating two-stage procedure where they first harvest healthy cartilage cells, grow them on a special membrane and then implant those cells back into the damaged area. The MPFL reconstruction was to stabilize my kneecap so it would track correctly and, importantly, not destroy the brand-new cartilage they were putting in there.

In other words, they were going to fix the damage and then fix the thing that helped cause the damage.

The first surgery was in February. The big surgery came at the end of March, and that’s when my world became remarkably small for a while. I was in a locked leg brace for about six weeks, then crutches, then endless physical therapy. I did PT at the clinic and PT at home, and for four hours every day I had to sit in a range-of-motion machine that slowly bent my knee back and forth.

Four hours is a very long time when you don’t particularly enjoy sitting still.

I watched an unreasonable amount of Who’s the Boss? I started writing my list of the 50 most influential Americans. I learned that Tony Micelli could solve most family problems in roughly 22 minutes, and I did exercises. Lots and lots and lots of exercises.

When my surgeon first explained the recovery, I had a few questions. The first was about work because I didn’t want to miss much of it. He wasn’t sure how I could possibly do my job while I couldn’t walk, so this became the moment when 20 years of accumulated sick days finally paid off.

Then I asked if I would be able to walk without crutches for Ben’s graduation in May.

He thought I should be right around there.

Finally, I asked the question I’d been thinking about ever since he started explaining the surgery.

“What about the Field of Dreams in August?”

He didn’t say yes. He didn’t say no. He said we’d see.

My physical therapist, Heath, was a little more optimistic. On the first day, he told me that if I really worked at it, he thought I could probably get there.

That was enough.

Recovery is strange because we imagine it as a straight line. You start at zero, then every day you get a little better until one morning you wake up and you’re healed. It doesn’t work that way at all. You have a great Tuesday and think you’re three weeks ahead of schedule, then Thursday your knee swells up and you become convinced you’ve ruined everything.

There are milestones that seem ridiculous until they belong to you. Bending your knee 60 degrees. Then 90. Getting out of a chair without thinking about it. Taking a few steps. Walking across a room. Walking without crutches.

Ben’s graduation became my first finish line.

I made it.

I walked into my son’s graduation without crutches, which months earlier had seemed like an enormous goal. Then, almost immediately, my attention moved to the next one.

Iowa.

That one never felt certain. At an appointment in June, I asked my surgeon’s assistant about the Field of Dreams and she said I’d have to ask Dr. Stuhlman at my next appointment. Maybe I’m reading too much into things, but “you’ll have to ask the doctor” does not generally sound like medical code for “absolutely, start taking batting practice.”

So I kept working.

Once I could walk comfortably again, I started walking every night. I cleaned up my diet, cut my calories way down, mostly by eliminating the bored snacking that had become one of the primary activities of knee rehabilitation, and lost about 20 pounds over the summer.

PT. Walking. Exercises. More PT.

There was a baseball field in Iowa.

In early August, I went back to see Dr. Stuhlman, fully expecting him to tell me no. He moved the knee around, checked everything, asked about physical therapy and told me I was doing good work and that everything seemed to be healing well.

So I asked, half joking because sometimes half joking makes it easier to hear the answer you don’t want.

“Well, can I play at the Field of Dreams with my family?”

He paused.

“Yes.”

I don’t think he understood at first why I was suddenly tearing up in his office. I really had convinced myself the answer was going to be no. He gave me one major restriction, absolutely no sliding, which was an easy promise considering I was not exactly known for my Rickey Henderson style aggressiveness on the bases even before they rebuilt my knee.

Then he said something that has stuck with me.

“Brian, you did all your PT. That’s what happens when you do.”

So we flew to Minneapolis, spent some time there and then made our way down to Iowa.

And eventually, there it was.

The farmhouse. The lights. The corn. The field.

There are places you’ve seen so many times in photographs and movies that you almost feel like you’ve already been there. Then you arrive and realize that you haven’t. Not really.

We played catch. We walked out of the corn because, I mean, come on, you have to walk out of the corn. We enjoyed temperatures in the low 80s, which after a Texas summer felt like someone had installed air conditioning over the entire state of Iowa.

Then we played baseball.

For our first game, they asked Ben to start on the mound. I looked around and saw my son pitching at the Field of Dreams, my nephew Jared in left field and my brother Kevin in right. I started as the extra hitter, which was probably exactly where a guy seven months removed from being unable to leave the batter’s box belonged.

Then came my first at-bat.

I slapped a single down the line, got to first base and immediately called for my pinch runner.

And, really, that could have been it.

I could have walked off the field right then and considered the entire trip a success. Seven months earlier I had hit a double and couldn’t make it out of the batter’s box. Now I’d gotten a hit at the Field of Dreams with my son, brother and nephew on the field.

What else could I possibly need?

But the games kept going, and I kept getting at-bats. I played first base. I played third. At various points we had basically a Ketcham family defense, with Ben at short, Kevin at second or third, me at first or third and Jared in the outfield.

Fun was had, I got plenty of singles, and had a great time. Contact hitting has always been my thing. Ben played great, Jared made one of the best catches of the weekend on David Allison’s near Home Run, and Kevin had a great time, and got ejected for having some disagreements on how wide the strike zone was.

We lost our first couple of games by a run or so, but we did win our last game.

I think. I honestly haven’t thought much about the scores.

Maybe that’s one of the things baseball gives back to you when you get older. When you’re young, the score is everything. Did we win? How many hits did I have? What’s my batting average? Where are we in the standings? Then you get older and start to understand just how absurdly lucky you are to be standing out there at all.

Zubi has assembled this wonderfully strange collection of people from Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Ohio, Florida, South Carolina and other places. We range in age from 18 to 73. There are fathers and sons, grandparents, college kids, guys who have played forever and guys who simply love baseball.

Think about that for a second.

Years ago, Levi posted something online saying that if you had the chance to play sandlot baseball, you should do it. I happened to read it. That led me to Friendly Baseball, which led me to Zubi and all these people I never would have met, which eventually led to a message last December asking if I wanted to go play baseball in Iowa.

That’s baseball, I suppose. One person throws a ball. Somebody else catches it. And somehow the game keeps connecting people.

More importantly, Ben is here. Kevin is here. Jared is here. My son, my brother and my nephew are playing baseball with me at the Field of Dreams.

There is a famous line in the movie, of course: “If you build it, he will come.” But I’ve never really thought Field of Dreams was about a magical baseball field. It’s about time. It’s about fathers and sons and second chances and the things that disappear from our lives so slowly that we don’t realize they’re gone until they’re gone. It’s about that almost childlike wish that maybe, somehow, you could get one of those things back.

Maybe you could have one more catch.

That’s probably why this place works. There aren’t giant grandstands or luxury suites or some enormous scoreboard. There’s grass and dirt and white chalk and a wall of corn. That’s about it.

A few years ago, when I asked Zubi what I needed to join Friendly Baseball, he told me to show up and bring a glove. If I didn’t have one, they’d find me one. I had no idea where that simple invitation would take me.

I certainly didn’t know last December what the next eight months would bring. A routine fly ball, two pops in my knee, two surgeries, a locked brace, crutches, hours in a machine, physical therapy, Ben’s graduation and months of wondering whether Iowa was going to happen at all.

Then, in August, my doctor said yes.

And now I’m here, standing on a baseball field in Iowa with my brother, my nephew, my son and a bunch of friends I probably never would have known if I hadn’t seen Levi’s post all those years ago. Gloves are popping, people are laughing, and somewhere somebody is complaining about a hamstring because there are certain baseball traditions that must be respected.

Maybe that’s enough of a lesson.

You don’t know how many games you have left, or where some random invitation might take you, or when you’ll get another chance to stand on a baseball field with people you love.

So when somebody asks if you want to play baseball at the Field of Dreams, say yes.

And bring your glove.

I have finished my America’s 50 Most Influential Americans list, and several people have asked me the same question:

What happened to everybody else?

Zach even joked to “Release the Ketcham List” and since I don’t want that trending, well, here they are.

When I started this project, I didn’t start with 50 names. I started with roughly 300 Americans who I thought had some kind of legitimate claim to enormous influence on the country. Presidents and inventors. Activists and industrialists. Scientists and entertainers. People who built institutions, people who destroyed old ones, and people whose influence was so woven into everyday American life that we barely notice it anymore.

Then I started cutting. And cutting. And moving people around. And occasionally staring at a name and thinking, How in the world am I leaving this person out?

So before anybody gets too worked up about the order below, let me make something very clear:

This list is in ……. an order.

I am not prepared to go to the mat arguing that Elizabeth Cady Stanton is exactly No. 117, that Steven Spielberg is precisely No. 69, or that Michael Jackson is definitely 179 spots more influential than Joe Biden.

And I am certainly not saying that Jacob Riis, Ida Tarbell, Johnny Carson, Yogi Berra or Alfred Matthew Yankovic couldn’t have cases made for moving much higher.

They absolutely could.

This is essentially the giant working list I started with. And one of the things I learned while writing the Top 50 is that the deeper you dig into somebody’s life, the more influential they become. That was actually one of the great dangers of this project.

You start researching somebody you have ranked No. 83 and, three hours later, you’re staring at your computer thinking, Wait … is George Gallup one of the 40 most influential Americans who ever lived?

Because suddenly you’re not thinking about a guy who invented polling. You’re thinking about elections, advertising, television, political campaigns, public opinion, market research and an entire society increasingly obsessed with measuring what everybody thinks. Believe me, that all happened in my head.

Do that 300 times and eventually everybody belongs in the Top 50.

But they can’t. So choices had to be made.

However,

There were ten names, in particular, that I kept coming back to. These were the people standing immediately outside the door while I tried desperately to figure out whether there was another chair somewhere inside.

51. Frederick Douglass

This is probably my biggest miss.

I thought about Douglass almost every day I worked on this project. There were moments when I wondered whether he belonged not merely in the Top 50, but somewhere near the Top 10.

Think about the American questions his life touched: slavery, abolition, the Civil War, emancipation, Reconstruction, citizenship, voting rights, women’s suffrage and the country’s evolving definition of freedom.

And he didn’t merely witness those debates but helped shape them.

Douglass escaped slavery and then spent more than half a century forcing America to confront the distance between the promises written into its founding documents and the country that actually existed.

Every time I tried to squeeze him into the 50, somebody else had to come out.

I never found the right move, and I hate that.

52. George Westinghouse

Nikola Tesla gets the mythology, but Westinghouse built the system. That’s an oversimplification, obviously, but it gets at why Westinghouse was so difficult to leave out. Alternating current generation and distribution became the infrastructure through which America was electrified.

Electricity is one of those technologies where the invention itself is only half the story. Somebody has to figure out how to make it work at enormous scale. Westinghouse did.

It came down to ideas vs. infrastructure. I’m annoyed because I could make a perfectly serious argument that he belongs somewhere in the Top 30. Even ahead of Tesla.

53. Lyndon B. Johnson

My friend Elizabeth probably made the best argument for anybody I left out.

Just look at the list.

Civil Rights Act. Voting Rights Act. Medicare. Medicaid. Federal education funding. Immigration reform. The Great Society.

Now look at how long he was president.

LBJ’s domestic presidency was an extraordinary burst of legislation that fundamentally altered Americans’ relationship with the federal government. Vietnam will forever complicate any discussion of Johnson’s presidency. It should. But this wasn’t a list of the best Americans. It was about influence.

In that sense, LBJ feels a little like the 20th century James K. Polk: an astonishing amount of consequential history packed into a remarkably short period of time.

I love how smart Elizabeth is, I hate how I didn’t ask her until it was too late.

54. Thurgood Marshall

People naturally think of Marshall as a Supreme Court justice.

But his case for this list was largely built before he ever joined the Court.

Marshall and the NAACP’s legal campaign systematically attacked the constitutional foundations of segregation. It was patient, strategic work that built precedent upon precedent until it culminated in Brown v. Board of Education.

Brown alone puts Marshall in this conversation. Period.

Everything else makes leaving him out even harder.

55. Eli Whitney

This is the uncomfortable one.

Whitney’s cotton gin helped transform the economics of cotton and contributed to the explosive expansion of slavery across the American South and West. Meanwhile, his manufacturing work became associated with the development and spread of interchangeable-parts production.

One influence helped industrialize America. The other helped strengthen one of the most horrific institutions in American history. Influence isn’t always good.

Sometimes the people who most change history change it in terrible ways.

56. Frederick Law Olmsted

Olmsted might be the perfect example of what I eventually realized this project was really about: finding the hidden systems behind American life.

Central Park is just the beginning.

Parks. Parkways. Campuses. Suburbs. Public spaces. The idea that rapidly growing American cities should deliberately preserve green spaces where ordinary people could escape the noise, congestion and chaos around them.

Millions of Americans have experienced Olmsted’s influence without ever knowing his name. Those became some of my favorite people on this list. Hate he didn’t make it.

57. Booker T. Washington

For roughly a generation, Washington may have been the most politically powerful Black American in the country.

Tuskegee. Vocational education. Philanthropy. Business networks. Political connections. An enormous web of influence that extended far beyond his public speeches.

His accommodationist approach to segregation drew powerful criticism, most famously from W.E.B. Du Bois, and that debate itself shaped Black political and educational thought for decades.

Wish he would have squeezed in too.

58. Vannevar Bush

Here is all one of my favorites. And I suspect most of you just said: Who?

Bush helped establish the modern American relationship between the federal government, universities, scientific research and national defense. That sounds bureaucratic but I’m over simplifying. Big time.

That system helped create the postwar American research machine, the sprawling network of universities, laboratories, federal funding and private industry that fueled advances in computing, medicine, aerospace, electronics, defense and countless other fields.

You may not know him but you live in his America.

59. Claude Shannon

Another hidden giant.

Shannon developed information theory, providing the mathematical foundation for modern digital communication. Computers. Telecommunications. Data compression. Networks. Digital storage. The information economy.

Strip away enough layers of the modern world and eventually you start bumping into Claude Shannon. And of everyone on this list, he might be one of the people whose ranking looks most ridiculous 50 years from now.

60. Jane Addams

Addams is another person whose influence didn’t arrive as one invention, law or presidential decision.

Her life was full of Settlement houses. Social work. Urban reform. Public health. Labor reform. Women’s political participation. Progressive government.

Hull House became both a direct force in Chicago and a model for reformers around the country. So, that is the near missed, now there is another lesson I learned from this whole thing.

Maybe America’s 50 Most Influential Americans You’ve Never Heard Of would have been even more fun.

Give me Vannevar Bush and Malcolm McLean. Claude Shannon and George Gallup. Benjamin Wright, who helped engineer the Erie Canal. Robert Noyce and Jack Kilby, whose work helped give us the integrated circuit. Alfred P. Sloan, who helped create the modern corporation. DeWitt Clinton, who pushed through the canal that helped make New York, “New York”. Edward Bernays, who helped invent modern public relations. William Knudsen, who helped turn American industry into the arsenal of democracy.

There are dozens of them.

People whose names aren’t on buildings or money. People who don’t get biopics. People who aren’t usually included in high school history textbooks. But change one decision they made, remove one system they created, or erase one idea they introduced and suddenly modern America looks different.

Those were the people I enjoyed discovering most. And maybe someday I’ll make that list. For now, though, here is where the original list went after No. 50.

Again: do not take the exact order too seriously.

The biggest thing I learned writing this series is that influence is almost impossible to see while you’re standing inside it.

I remember presidents because their names organize our history books, generals because wars give us beginnings and endings, and inventors because they give us something we can point to. I love timelines and end dates.

But America was also built by people who created systems, how goods move, how electricity reaches our homes, how information travels, how cities grow, how corporations operate, how universities conduct research, how we consume news, how food reaches us, and how our children are educated. Systems is one of the big takeaways for me from this whole thing.

That was what made this project so much fun. I started out trying to rank people. Somewhere along the way, I realized I was really trying to understand America.

Why does this country look the way it does? Why do we work and live the way we do? Why do institutions that seem permanent exist in the first place?

Behind almost every answer, somewhere, there is a person. Sometimes it’s Washington or Lincoln or Franklin. And sometimes it’s Malcolm McLean or Norman Borlaug.

Thanks to everyone who read along, argued with me, corrected me, suggested someone I forgot, or told me I had somebody 30 spots too high or 40 spots too low.

I knew when I started there was no correct list.

I’m even more certain of that now.

And I think that was the point.

I’ve been looking forward to writing this one for months.

I know putting Benjamin Franklin at No. 1 is going to surprise some people. Some will argue for Washington. Others for Lincoln. I understand both arguments, and after spending the better part of a year writing this series, I don’t think either choice would be unreasonable.

He didn’t at number one. He moved around, but every time I tried to move Franklin somewhere else, I ran into the same problem.

The America we recognize today kept looking more and more like Benjamin Franklin.

Not just the nation he helped found.

The people who live in it.

I’ve always believed Franklin was the first person who acted unmistakably American before there was an America to act like. He reinvented himself over and over. He started businesses. He retired early to pursue passion projects. He invented things because they seemed useful. He volunteered. He organized civic groups. He loved science without looking down on practical work. He made money, but never seemed satisfied with simply making money. He wanted to improve things, and then improve the improvements.

In so many ways, he feels less like an eighteenth-century Founder than a remarkably modern American who somehow wandered backward through time.

I think if Benjamin Franklin walked into 2026, he’d spend about fifteen minutes marveling at smartphones, another fifteen asking how they worked, and by the end of the week he’d have an app, a podcast, and three nonprofit organizations.

Washington would feel like a visitor.

Jefferson might.

Hamilton probably would too.

Franklin would somehow feel right at home.

This one is also personal.

My son is named Benjamin.

Not after my father. Not after my grandfather.

After Benjamin Franklin.

When he was born, my wife and I briefly considered naming him Hamilton instead. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. Hamilton Ketcham probably spends a lifetime explaining his name.

Benjamin Ketcham gets to carry the name of the man I believe best represents what America became.

A few years ago, after seeing Hamilton on Broadway, I had the chance to meet Lin-Manuel Miranda. Like thousands of other history nerds, I wanted to ask him something that had been bothering me for three hours.

“Where was Benjamin Franklin?”

Lin smiled.

“Oh, he was in it.”

He explained that he’d actually written Franklin into the musical. The problem, he said, was that every time Franklin appeared, he stole the scene. Before long, the show was becoming less about Alexander Hamilton and more about Benjamin Franklin, so Franklin eventually disappeared from the script altogether.

I’ve always loved that story because it sounds exactly like something Benjamin Franklin would do.

He had been stealing scenes his entire life.

This was the song they cut from Hamilton sung by The Decemberists called Ben Franklin’s Song.

One of my favorite scenes in American history doesn’t happen at Independence Hall.

It doesn’t involve a kite, or electricity, or diplomacy.

It begins with bread. (Carbs are the key to my heart)

In 1723, a seventeen-year-old runaway apprentice arrived in Philadelphia with almost nothing to his name. He was dirty from the trip, exhausted, and carrying all the possessions he owned. Hungry, he walked into a bakery and asked for enough bread to get by. Not knowing exactly what to order, he ended up with three enormous rolls. One tucked under each arm, another in his hand, he wandered awkwardly down Market Street, chewing on one loaf while trying to carry the others.

Standing in a doorway was a young woman named Deborah Read.

She watched the strange young man shuffle past with bread sticking out in every direction and later admitted she thought he looked rather ridiculous. Walter Isaacson calls it one of the most improbable first meetings in American history. Neither one could have imagined they were looking at the person with whom they would spend much of the rest of their lives.

I love that image.

Not because Franklin looked impressive, because he didn’t. America’s greatest self-made man entered the city looking like he’d lost an argument with a bakery.

Franklin’s life was really one long exercise in reinvention.

He had been born in Boston, the fifteenth of seventeen children in a family that could barely afford to feed everyone. His father made candles and soap. Benjamin was expected to help. Formal schooling ended after only two years because there simply wasn’t enough money to continue. For most people, that would have been the end of the story.

For Franklin, it was merely the beginning. He educated himself. He borrowed books, and read constantly.

Copied essays by hand to teach himself how better writers built sentences. He would rewrite articles from memory, compare them to the originals, and figure out where he had fallen short. He taught himself languages because he wanted access to more ideas. H.W. Brands argues that Franklin viewed self-improvement almost as a lifelong experiment, constantly testing ways to become more capable than he had been the day before. That strikes me as deeply American, not believing you’re finished.

Believing you can become something else.

Franklin’s older brother James owned a printing shop, and Benjamin apprenticed there. The arrangement quickly deteriorated. James was talented, stubborn, and not especially interested in taking advice from his younger brother. Benjamin, meanwhile, had already developed one of the traits that would define his life.

He had opinions, lots of them.

When James refused to publish Benjamin’s essays, the teenager came up with a wonderfully Franklin solution. He invented a middle-aged widow named Silence Dogood, slipped her letters under the shop door at night, and watched as readers became captivated by the mysterious writer. Week after week the essays appeared in the newspaper. They were funny, observant, occasionally biting, and widely discussed throughout Boston.

Only after everyone had fallen in love with Silence Dogood did Benjamin admit that she never existed.

He was trolling colonial America before America existed.

If you are looking for an apology for working in any National Treasure Clip, you are not getting one here.

Franklin also understood something about publicity long before anyone coined the term. His biggest rival in the almanac business was Titan Leeds, and Franklin decided the easiest way to outsell him was to announce that Leeds was going to die.

In Poor Richard’s Almanack, Franklin confidently predicted the exact date and even the hour of his competitor’s demise. The only problem was that Titan Leeds stubbornly refused to cooperate by remaining alive.

Franklin wasn’t discouraged.

He simply declared that the man still publishing under Leeds’s name had to be an impostor. The real Titan Leeds, Franklin insisted with a straight face, had indeed died exactly as predicted. Every new edition doubled down on the joke, insisting the living Leeds was merely a ghost or fraud pretending otherwise.

It was ridiculous. It was hilarious. And it sold an awful lot of almanacs. Franklin understood something advertisers still understand three centuries later. Sometimes the best marketing campaign is making sure everyone is talking about you.

Franklin eventually left Boston, but he didn’t leave behind his understanding of people. Another one of my favorite stories about him comes from his early years as a printer in Philadelphia. He noticed something curious.

Customers didn’t merely want good work. They wanted to believe they were doing business with the hardest-working man in town.

So Franklin made sure they saw him working.

Instead of hiring someone else to move paper through the streets, he pushed the wheelbarrow himself. If heavy bundles needed carrying, he carried them himself. He understood that industry wasn’t just something you practiced.

It was something people noticed. Isaacson points out that Franklin consciously cultivated a reputation for diligence because reputation, like capital, compounds over time.

Long before anyone talked about personal branding, Benjamin Franklin understood the assignment.

Success came quickly.

His newspaper flourished. Poor Richard’s Almanack became one of the best-selling publications in colonial America. His printing business made him wealthy enough that, at the age of forty-two, he did something almost unimaginable.

He retired.

Not because he wanted to stop working, because he wanted to start learning. Most people spend their lives working toward retirement, Benjamin Franklin retired so he could begin his next career.

Benjamin Franklin’s retirement lasted about as long as you’d expect. Which is to say, not very long.

He had made enough money to stop working forever, but Franklin had never really been motivated by money in the first place. Money had simply purchased something he valued much more.

Freedom. Freedom to read. Freedom to experiment. Freedom to ask questions no one else was asking. Freedom to become someone else all over again. Most people spend the first half of life building a career. Franklin built six or seven.

This is where most biographies begin talking about electricity.

I think that’s selling Franklin short. Electricity wasn’t his greatest invention.

Curiosity was.

Franklin seemed constitutionally incapable of walking past a mystery without stopping to investigate it. Why does lightning strike? Why does warm air rise? Why do storms behave the way they do? Why do chimneys smoke? Why do lenses work the way they do? His questions ranged from the profound to the wonderfully ordinary, but they always shared one characteristic.

He wanted answers he could use.

That’s one of the reasons I think Franklin feels so modern. He wasn’t interested in knowledge simply so people would think he was intelligent. He wanted ideas that solved problems. A lightning rod protected homes. Bifocals helped aging eyes. The Franklin stove heated rooms more efficiently. Flexible urinary catheters made life easier for his brother John. His famous glass armonica delighted audiences throughout Europe, including Mozart and Beethoven. Time and again, Franklin asked the same question.

How can I make life a little better?

That’s a remarkably American instinct. H.W. Brands argues that Franklin’s genius lay not in discovering abstract truths but in relentlessly connecting ideas to practical improvements that ordinary people could actually use.

Ben Franklin has said that the Glass Armonica was his favorite Invention.

Just as remarkable as what Franklin invented was what he refused to do.

Just like Jonas Salk, he never patented any of it.

When someone asked why, Franklin replied that just as he had benefited from the inventions of others, he believed his own discoveries should remain freely available for everyone to improve upon. Imagine that today. The inventor of the lightning rod, bifocals, and one of history’s most important discoveries about electricity simply shrugged and said, “Take it.”

The world became a little richer because Benjamin Franklin chose not to become richer. Of course, Franklin also understood that solving problems wasn’t limited to laboratories. Sometimes the invention was an institution.

When Philadelphia needed a lending library, Franklin helped create one. When the city needed a volunteer fire department, Franklin organized one. When it needed a hospital, he helped establish one.

An insurance company. A philosophical society. An academy that eventually became the University of Pennsylvania. The list keeps going.

I’ve always been struck by how often Franklin looked around, noticed something missing, and simply asked, “Well...why don’t we build one?”

He didn’t wait for someone else, that might be his greatest lesson.

Franklin’s approach to religion was equally practical. Although he never fit comfortably inside any single denomination, he believed deeply that religion, at its best, encouraged people to become kinder neighbors and better citizens. So he donated money to nearly every congregation in Philadelphia: Presbyterian, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, Quaker, Catholic, Jewish, and others, regardless of whether he agreed with their theology. Franklin cared less about which church someone attended than whether it inspired them to do good.

It seems fitting, then, that when Franklin died in 1790, ministers from numerous Christian denominations, along with Philadelphia’s Rabbi, joined one another in paying tribute. Few Americans have ever been claimed by so many different faiths at once.

That says as much about Benjamin Franklin as any invention ever could.

Franklin’s humor deserves almost as much attention as his inventions. History has a bad habit of turning brilliant people into statues. Franklin would have hated that.

He loved practical jokes, clever observations, and making people laugh. He filled Poor Richard’s Almanack with sayings that have outlived almost everyone who first read them.

“Early to bed and early to rise...”

“A penny saved is a penny earned.”

“Fish and visitors smell in three days.”

Even when people can’t remember where those sayings came from but they remember them. That’s influence.

Franklin also believed fresh air cured almost everything.

His preferred treatment became known as an “air bath.” The process was wonderfully simple. Open a window. Take off your clothes. Sit there completely naked for an hour.

Read. Write letters. Think. Play Chess with a female guest.

Franklin insisted it was healthier than soaking in water.

I’ve often wondered what hotel management in 2026 would think if Benjamin Franklin checked into one of their rooms. He’d probably be asked to leave before breakfast.

Franklin loved people almost as much as he loved ideas. He enjoyed conversation. He enjoyed parties. He enjoyed food. He enjoyed wine. And, yes...

He enjoyed women.

Franklin’s marriage to Deborah Read was genuine, affectionate, and enormously important to his success. She managed the printing business, raised their family, and held life together in Philadelphia while Franklin spent years overseas. She deserved far more credit than history usually gives her.

At the same time, Franklin’s long absences from home and his undeniable fondness for female companionship are impossible to ignore. Walter Isaacson and Stacy Schiff both paint the picture of a man who remained endlessly charming, flirtatious, and deeply attractive to many of the women he met, particularly during his years in France.

Franklin, it turns out, was not only one of America’s first celebrities.

He knew it.

Then came France.

By the time Benjamin Franklin arrived in Paris in late 1776, the American Revolution was hanging by a thread. George Washington had suffered defeat after defeat around New York. Congress had fled Philadelphia. The Continental Army was desperately short of food, ammunition, uniforms, money, and perhaps most dangerously, hope. The young United States needed loans, supplies, and an ally powerful enough to challenge Great Britain.

There was really only one nation that could provide all three.

France.

The challenge wasn’t finding France. It was convincing France that America was worth betting on. Congress sent Benjamin Franklin.

I’ve often wondered if they fully understood what they were doing. They weren’t merely sending a diplomat. They were sending the one American capable of walking into a room full of Europe’s smartest people and somehow leaving with every one of them believing they had just met the most fascinating man alive.

Franklin understood something politicians, advertisers, and entertainers still understand today. People don’t simply support causes. They support stories.

So Benjamin Franklin became one.

Rather than dressing like a European aristocrat, Franklin leaned into the image the French already wanted to believe. He wore plain brown clothes and his famous fur cap. He spoke with the confidence of someone who had absolutely nothing to prove. He looked less like a polished diplomat than a wise philosopher who had wandered in from the American wilderness.

The performance was deliberate.

And it worked.

It worked better than Franklin himself could have imagined. Paris didn’t simply admire Benjamin Franklin. It began imitating him. Aristocratic women styled their towering powdered hair into what became known as the coiffure à la Franklin, arranging it in tribute to the distinctive silhouette of his fur cap.

Imagine that for a moment.

One of the most fashionable cities in the world looked at a balding, bespectacled American in a plain hat and decided, That’s the look.

Franklin, naturally, turned even this into a joke. He suggested that if French gentlemen and ladies simply wore their own hair instead of paying expensive wigmakers, and sent him half the money they saved, he would have enough to employ all those newly unemployed hairdressers himself.

Paris fell in love with him. His portrait hung in homes. His face appeared on snuffboxes, medallions, porcelain, jewelry, and walking sticks. Fashionable Parisians quoted him. Scientists sought his company. Philosophers debated with him. Noblewomen flirted with him. Stacy Schiff describes the city as suffering from something close to “Franklin fever.” He wasn’t simply America’s ambassador.

For millions of Europeans, he was America.

That may sound superficial, but it wasn’t.

While Paris celebrated Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Franklin was persuading France to save the American Revolution. He secured desperately needed loans, military supplies, and eventually the alliance that brought French money, French soldiers, and the French navy into the war.

Without French ships trapping Cornwallis at Yorktown, there is no final victory there.

Without French gold, the Continental Army may not survive long enough to reach it. Washington won America’s greatest military victory. Franklin made sure Washington had a chance to win it.

Yet what amazes me most is that Franklin never stopped being curious.

Most people become more certain as they grow older.

Franklin seemed to become more interested.

He remained fascinated by science well into his seventies and eighties. He corresponded with inventors, physicians, philosophers, and politicians across Europe. He debated electricity one day and economics the next. His letters wandered effortlessly from serious discussions of constitutional government to jokes, inventions, weather observations, and recipes.

He never became trapped by expertise, and he stayed teachable. I think that’s one of the reasons he aged so well intellectually. He never believed he had finished becoming Benjamin Franklin.

That willingness to keep growing may be most evident in one of the final chapters of his life.

Franklin had owned enslaved people when he was younger. Like many colonists, he accepted slavery far longer than he should have. But unlike many of his contemporaries, he changed.

Late in life, Franklin became president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. His final public act was submitting a petition to Congress urging the abolition of slavery. The petition went nowhere. Congress tabled it almost immediately.

Franklin knew it probably would.

He submitted it anyway. One of the things I’ve admired most while writing this series is the people who remained willing to change their minds. Washington evolved slowly on slavery. Lincoln evolved on emancipation. Franklin evolved too.

Growth doesn’t erase earlier failures. But it does matter.

Near the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, as delegates walked out of Independence Hall, a Philadelphia woman named Elizabeth Willing Powel reportedly asked Franklin a question that has echoed through American history.

“Well, Doctor, what have we got?”

Franklin answered:

“A republic, if you can keep it.”

People quote that line all the time. I think they’re quoting the wrong half.

The important word isn’t republic.

It’s you.

Franklin didn’t say Washington or Congress would keep it. He didn’t say the Supreme Court would keep it. He placed the burden exactly where he believed it belonged.

On the citizens.

Franklin spent the final months of the Constitutional Convention sitting beneath a carved half-sun on the back of George Washington’s chair. Throughout the long summer, delegates debated whether the carving represented a rising sun or a setting one. Franklin later admitted he often found himself wondering the same thing as the Convention lurched from one disagreement to the next.

When the Constitution was finally signed, he said he knew the answer.

“I have... the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting sun.”

I’ve always loved that image.

Franklin spent his life believing tomorrow could be better than today. He believed ordinary people could improve themselves. He believed communities could solve problems together. He believed knowledge should be shared, that curiosity was a virtue, and that free people could govern themselves if they were willing to do the work.

In other words...

He believed in a rising sun.

And nearly 250 years later, I think we are still living in the America Benjamin Franklin imagined.

Think for a moment about an ordinary day in America.

Maybe you wake up and reach for your glasses.

You are getting older now, and your eyes don’t make the transition from the phone in your hand to the television across the room quite as easily as they once did. So you look through one part of the lens to read and another to see across the room.

Maybe before you leave the house, you check the weather. There is a thunderstorm coming. You know it is coming because people have spent generations studying how storms move across the continent. You watch lightning flash in the distance and don’t think of it as some mysterious fire thrown from the heavens. You know what it is.

Electricity.

Benjamin Franklin.

Maybe you drive past a fire station.

There are men and women inside waiting for a bell to ring, ready to rush toward somebody else’s worst day because a community decided long ago that fighting fires shouldn’t simply be left to whoever happened to own a bucket.

Maybe you walk into a library.

Think about how strange a library really is.

There are thousands of books in there that you don’t own. You can walk inside, choose one, take it home, learn whatever you want from it, bring it back, and then take another.

Maybe a package or letter arrives at your house.

Maybe you donate to a hospital, join a civic organization, volunteer for something in your community, subscribe to a newspaper, argue about politics under a fake name online, or sit around with a few friends saying, “You know what this town really needs?”

Maybe you have an idea.

It isn’t a particularly profound idea. You just notice that something doesn’t work quite as well as it should.

So you mess with it. You take it apart. You try something. It doesn’t work. You try something else. And eventually you make it a little better.

Maybe you decide at 40 or 50 or 60 that you aren’t finished becoming whoever you’re going to be.

You change careers or start a business. You learn something new. Go back to school. Take up a hobby. Write something. Build something. You look at the life you’ve already lived and decide there might still be another version of yourself waiting.

Maybe you realize you were wrong about something. Something important. And instead of spending the rest of your life defending what you once believed, you change your mind.

Benjamin Franklin.

And maybe you look around at your community, your school, your neighborhood, your city, your country, and see something that isn’t working.

You can complain about it.

Franklin certainly knew how to do that.

But then you ask the more important question:

Well...why don’t we build something better?

That is Benjamin Franklin too.

That is why I kept coming back to him.

George Washington gave America its indispensable leader. Thomas Jefferson gave it its greatest statement of ideals. Alexander Hamilton built its financial foundation. John Marshall helped establish the rule of law. Abraham Lincoln gave the Union a second chance. Franklin Roosevelt restored confidence when confidence had almost disappeared. The Wright brothers made the world smaller.

Every one of them changed America.

Benjamin Franklin did something slightly different.

Before there was an America, he started acting like an American.

Curious. Restless. Funny. Ambitious. Skeptical. Practical. Civic-minded. Occasionally ridiculous. Forever convinced that whatever existed could probably be improved if somebody was willing to roll up his sleeves and try.

And almost 250 years later, we’re still doing it.

We invent things.

We start things.

We join things.

We argue.

We volunteer.

We reinvent ourselves.

We screw things up.

We change our minds.

We try again.

We look at something that doesn’t work and think we can make it better.

That America is Benjamin Franklin.

And that’s why Benjamin Franklin is No. 1.

Imagine winning a revolution.

Your army would follow you anywhere. Congress is weak. The Articles of Confederation are barely holding together. There is no Constitution, no presidency, no established government capable of telling you “no.” Across Europe, nearly everyone assumes you will do what victorious generals have done throughout history. Julius Caesar had done it. Oliver Cromwell had done it. Napoleon soon would. Revolutions almost always replaced one ruler with another.

George Washington did something no one expected.

He walked away.

King George III, who had spent years trying to crush the rebellion, reportedly heard that Washington intended to resign his commission and return to Mount Vernon. The king paused before replying that if Washington truly did such a thing, “he will be the greatest man in the world.”

That may be the most remarkable compliment Washington ever received.

Not because it came from an enemy.

Because it came from another king who understood exactly how difficult that decision really was.

History has produced brilliant generals. It has produced courageous revolutionaries and gifted politicians. America has had extraordinary presidents. But George Washington occupies a category almost entirely by himself because he accomplished something rarer than winning power.

He convinced the world that power could be surrendered voluntarily.

That sounds obvious today because every four years we watch presidents leave office, shake hands, and climb aboard a helicopter headed home. We take peaceful transfers of power for granted because America has almost always experienced them.

Washington is the reason we do.

Before there could be Jefferson writing the Declaration, Madison designing the Constitution, Hamilton building the financial system, Marshall defining judicial review, Lincoln preserving the Union, or Roosevelt leading America through depression and war, someone first had to prove that this strange new experiment called a republic could survive the ambitions of the very people who created it.

George Washington did that.

Which is why I have him at No. 2.

The funny thing is that young George Washington probably wouldn’t have recognized the man history remembers.

He was ambitious. Very ambitious.

He desperately wanted respect. Born into Virginia’s planter class but never inheriting the enormous fortune of families like the Carters or Randolphs, Washington spent much of his early life trying to climb into the colony’s highest social circles. He carefully cultivated his manners, his appearance, and his reputation. Ron Chernow describes a young man intensely aware of status, eager to prove himself worthy of standing among Virginia’s elite.

Sometimes we imagine Washington as if he had emerged from the womb wearing a powdered wig and carrying the Constitution under one arm.

The real George Washington had to become George Washington.

One of the details I love most comes from Mount Vernon itself.

For generations, historians believed Washington’s mansion had been painted in subdued colonial colors, pleasant creams, soft whites, understated earth tones that fit the popular image of America’s modest founding father.

Then conservators began restoring the house. As they carefully peeled away centuries of paint, they discovered something completely different. Washington’s home had originally been stunning.

The exterior featured brilliant white sand mixed into the paint so the walls sparkled in sunlight, while the wood was scored and painted to resemble expensive stone. Inside, visitors encountered rich blues, vivid greens, and striking vermilions. Those pigments were enormously expensive in the eighteenth century. They weren’t accidental choices. They announced wealth, refinement, and success to everyone who crossed the threshold. Chernow notes that Washington understood architecture and design as statements of taste and stature as much as places to live.

That discovery changed the way I thought about him. Washington wasn’t pretending to be a simple farmer. He was an eighteenth-century Virginia gentleman, and he wanted the world to know it. Not because he was vain, but because in his world, appearances inspired confidence. People followed leaders who looked capable of leading.

Washington understood that long before he ever wore a general’s uniform.

His education wasn’t remarkable by the standards of the Founding Fathers. Jefferson seemed to read everything ever written. Madison devoured political philosophy. Hamilton wrote like a man trying to outpace his own thoughts.

Washington learned differently.

He measured land.

As a teenage surveyor, he spent months crossing the Virginia wilderness with little more than instruments, notebooks, and determination. Surveying demanded patience, precision, and the ability to see an entire landscape instead of merely the few feet in front of you. Joseph Ellis argues that those years shaped Washington’s lifelong habit of careful observation and practical judgment. He learned to solve problems by quietly studying them before acting.

It was not the glamorous beginning of a legendary life.

It was exactly the right one.

Then came the French and Indian War. Washington entered the conflict eager for military glory. Instead, he found chaos.

The defining moment arrived in 1755 during General Edward Braddock’s disastrous march toward Fort Duquesne. British regulars, dressed for European battlefields, stumbled into an ambush in the Pennsylvania wilderness. The disciplined lines dissolved almost instantly. Officers fell one after another. Horses screamed. Soldiers fled. Braddock himself was mortally wounded.

Washington, who had already been ill and had joined the expedition despite severe sickness, suddenly found himself riding back and forth across the battlefield carrying orders and trying to salvage what remained of the army.

When the fighting finally ended, two horses had been shot from beneath him.

Four bullets had pierced his coat. Not one had touched him.

Years later, an aging Native American leader who had fought against the British reportedly told Washington that his warriors had deliberately aimed at the tall Virginian again and again. After watching him survive untouched, they became convinced the Great Spirit protected him because no ordinary man could live through such fire. Chernow recounts the story not as proof of divine intervention, but as evidence that Washington’s extraordinary survival became legendary even among his enemies.

Washington himself wasn’t quite so mystical. He simply believed Providence had spared him for some purpose not yet revealed.

History suggests he may have been right.

If George Washington had been judged solely by his victories, he probably wouldn’t rank anywhere near the top of this list.

That sounds strange until you remember how the Revolutionary War actually unfolded.

He lost New York. He lost Philadelphia. He lost battle after battle. Retreat became so common that many Americans began to wonder if independence had been nothing more than a beautiful dream. Washington understood something that many of his critics did not.

The Continental Army did not have to conquer the British Army.

It simply had to outlast it and that distinction may have saved the Revolution. The British could win battles indefinitely. They could occupy cities. They could scatter American forces. But they could not win unless they destroyed Washington’s army.

Washington never gave them that chance.

Joseph Ellis makes the point that Washington’s true military genius wasn’t dazzling battlefield tactics so much as strategic endurance. He knew that every day his army remained in the field was another day Britain was paying enormous sums to fight an increasingly unpopular war three thousand miles from home.

Sometimes survival is the strategy.

Nothing illustrates that better than Christmas night, 1776. The Revolution was hanging by a thread.

The army had been chased across New York and New Jersey. Enlistments were about to expire. Many soldiers planned to go home in a matter of days. Washington knew that if the army dissolved before the new year, there might not be another one.

So he gambled.

In the middle of a freezing night, with ice floating down the Delaware River, Washington led roughly 2,400 men across the water toward Trenton.

People often remember the painting. The truth was colder. And the photo above is more accurate.

The crossing took far longer than expected. The weather was miserable. The soldiers marched through snow and sleet with bleeding feet. Some left bloody footprints in the frozen ground. By the time they reached Trenton, the attack was already hours behind schedule.

It didn’t matter. The victory wasn’t especially large in military terms, but psychologically, it was enormous. Americans suddenly remembered something they had almost forgotten. The British could lose.

Washington understood morale as well as any commander who has ever lived.

He understood symbols, and timing and hope. Those aren’t qualities usually taught in military academies. They win wars anyway.

Valley Forge may be the greatest example. Popular memory tells us that Valley Forge was a story about suffering and it was.

But suffering wasn’t the point. Holding together was.

Thousands of soldiers endured hunger, cold, disease, and inadequate clothing during the winter of 1777-78. More importantly, they stayed. Baron von Steuben arrived and transformed an army of brave volunteers into a disciplined fighting force. Washington spent that winter doing what he often did best, keeping people together long enough for tomorrow to become possible.

Great leaders don’t merely inspire people during victories. They convince them not to quit during defeats. This was one of his best moments.

One of my favorite Washington stories isn’t about a battlefield at all.

It’s about a pair of eyeglasses.

In 1783, with the war essentially won, many officers had become furious with Congress for failing to pay them. Some quietly discussed using the army’s strength to pressure the government. Others whispered about making Washington something very close to a king.

The moment could have destroyed the republic before it even began. Washington walked into the meeting and addressed his officers. Then, reaching into his pocket, he paused to put on a pair of spectacles. Many of the men had never seen him wear them.

“I have grown gray in your service,” he said quietly, “and now find myself growing blind.”

The room fell silent.

The officers who had marched with him for eight long years suddenly saw not an untouchable hero, but an aging man who had sacrificed as much as they had.

The conspiracy evaporated. No threats or arrests. No need for speeches about patriotism. Just honesty.

Chernow calls it perhaps the greatest moment of Washington’s life, and it’s hard to argue with him.

There are other victories we rarely remember because they happened in whispers instead of cannon fire.

Washington built one of America’s first sophisticated intelligence networks. The Culper Spy Ring, operating largely around New York, supplied crucial information about British troop movements, military plans, and even Benedict Arnold’s treason before it could fully unfold. Washington read invisible ink, protected informants, and appreciated something military leaders have understood ever since.

Sometimes the most important battle is the one the enemy never realizes you’ve won.

If there is one thing that surprised me while reading about Washington, it was how much he loved farming.

Not owned a farm. Loved farming, and there is a difference.

Whenever war or politics allowed, his thoughts drifted back to Mount Vernon. He experimented with crop rotation long before it became common practice. He tested new grains, explored better methods of fertilization, and became fascinated with mule breeding after receiving breeding stock from Spain. His remarkable sixteen-sided threshing barn wasn’t built because it looked interesting. It was designed because Washington believed it would make harvesting grain more efficient.

He approached agriculture the same way the Wright brothers approached airplanes.

Observe. Experiment. Improve. Try again.

Mount Vernon wasn’t simply where Washington lived. It was where he thought.

On December 23, 1783, George Washington entered the Maryland State House in Annapolis wearing his blue military uniform for what everyone assumed would be another ceremonial appearance.

Instead, he did something almost no victorious general had ever done.

He resigned. Not because he had been defeated or because someone forced him.

Because he believed the army should always answer to civilians, and because he believed republics only survive when those with the most power willingly surrender it.

Imagine the temptation.

For eight years his soldiers had marched wherever he pointed. Millions of Americans already regarded him as the indispensable man. Congress was weak. The government barely functioned. If Washington had announced that the United States needed a king, a remarkable number of people probably would have nodded in agreement.

He never seriously considered it. That may be the greatest military victory of his life.

Washington returned to Mount Vernon believing his public career had finally ended.

He meant it.

He wasn’t playing politics or pretending to retire while secretly planning a comeback. He wanted to farm. He wanted to improve his fields, experiment with crops, entertain guests, and spend whatever years remained enjoying the home history had repeatedly taken away from him.

Then, yet again, history interrupted.

When delegates gathered in Philadelphia in 1787 to repair the broken Articles of Confederation, everyone understood one thing.

If George Washington didn’t attend, the convention might fail before it even began.

He reluctantly packed his bags once more. I’ve noticed something about Washington while writing this series. Nearly every great chapter of his life begins the same way. He tries to go home. America asks him not to.

Even after the Constitution was written, there remained one enormous unanswered question. Would anyone trust it? The document itself couldn’t create confidence.

Paper never can. People trust people before they trust institutions, and once again, America turned to George Washington.

His election as the nation’s first president was unanimous, something that has never happened before or since. Yet Washington didn’t greet the news with celebration. Friends noticed anxiety instead. He privately admitted that accepting the office felt “like a culprit who is going to the place of his execution.” Chernow notes that Washington understood better than anyone that if the first presidency failed, the presidency itself might fail with it.

He wasn’t simply becoming the first president.

He was inventing the presidency.

Every decision became a precedent.

How should a president be addressed? One suggestion was "His Highness the President of the United States of America, and Protector of Their Liberties."

Should he ride in a carriage?

Should he shake hands? How often should he appear in public?

Could citizens criticize him? How much authority should the executive possess?

Washington knew that future presidents would copy whatever he did.

That kind of pressure is difficult to imagine and there was no instruction manual.

He was writing it.

One of the things that strikes me most is how often Washington chose restraint over ambition. He could have crushed political opposition, but he didn’t.

He could have ignored criticism but he listened. He could have sought revenge against enemies, he usually declined. He could have remained president for life, instead, after two terms, he announced he was finished.

Today that hardly seems revolutionary, in the eighteenth century, it was astonishing.

There was no constitutional limit on presidential terms. Nothing prevented Washington from serving until he died. Had he sought a third term, he almost certainly would have won.

Instead, he walked away. Again.

It is impossible to overstate how important that decision became. More than a century before the Twenty-second Amendment limited presidents to two terms, George Washington had already established the custom that power should be temporary.

America didn’t adopt that tradition because it was written into law. America adopted it because George Washington lived it.

There is another contradiction that belongs in Washington’s story.

He spent most of his life owning enslaved people. That fact should never be softened.

It should also never be ignored that his thinking evolved in ways that many of his contemporaries’ did not. By the end of his life, Washington had come to believe slavery was incompatible with the principles for which the Revolution had been fought. In his will, he directed that the enslaved people he legally owned be freed after Martha’s death, making him the only major Founding Father to emancipate his enslaved people in that way. It did not erase the injustice of a lifetime spent participating in slavery.

Nothing could. But it reminds us that even Washington remained a work in progress. Even if he benefited from his slow change on this issue. History’s greatest figures are still human beings, and not perfect.

George Washington did something even more fundamental.

He made self-government believable.

That sounds abstract until you realize how many revolutions throughout history collapsed into dictatorships. The American Revolution could easily have become another one. The army adored him. The public trusted him. Foreign governments expected him to become some version of a monarch.

Instead, he demonstrated that a nation could be built on laws rather than personalities. Every peaceful transfer of presidential power since 1797 traces back to that decision. Every inauguration. Every concession speech. Every former president who returns home. All of it begins with George Washington.

I’ve always loved the story about King George III. I know. I’ve mentioned it above, but it is that important.

When the British king heard that Washington intended to resign his commission and return to private life, he reportedly said, “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”

The king understood something that many Americans still overlook.

Winning the Revolution made Washington famous.

Walking away made him indispensable.

Nothing after that could have been done if the first American President had decided that one man mattered more than the republic. George Washington taught America its first and perhaps greatest civic lesson. Power is never more honorable than when it is voluntarily surrendered.

That is why, two hundred and twenty-five years after his death, every president still follows the path he walked away on.

And that is why he is No. 2.

The first thing most of us think about when we picture Abraham Lincoln is how sad he looks. The photographs don’t help. Neither does the Lincoln Memorial.

Everything about him seems solemn. Heavy. Almost impossibly burdened. The people who actually knew him often remembered something entirely different.

They remembered how hard he laughed.

David Herbert Donald writes that Lincoln’s face, at rest, could appear almost painfully melancholy. Then he would begin telling one of his stories. His eyes would brighten, the deep lines would soften, and before long the entire room would be laughing with him.

I’ve always loved that contrast, because no American ever carried more sorrow.

And perhaps no American understood better that sometimes laughter is what keeps sorrow from winning.

Lincoln himself once admitted, “If I did not laugh, I should die.”

That wasn’t simply a clever line, it was almost certainly true.

Visitors to the White House often arrived expecting to find a commander in chief buried beneath military maps, casualty reports, and impossible decisions. Instead, they frequently found Lincoln telling one of his famous frontier stories. Some thought it inappropriate. Others wondered how a man leading a nation through civil war could possibly joke at a time like that.

Eventually, his cabinet understood, the stories weren’t distractions from the burden., they were how he survived it.

Doris Kearns Goodwin describes meeting after meeting where Lincoln used humor to relax a room before asking people to wrestle with the hardest questions imaginable. He instinctively understood that people think more clearly when fear loosens its grip, and a well-timed story often accomplished what anger never could. It’s one of the reasons I think Lincoln became the right man at exactly the right moment.

He knew how to carry despair without letting everyone else drown in it.

That gift didn’t come from books, nope, it came from the frontier.

Lincoln’s childhood looked nothing like those of Washington, Jefferson, or Franklin Roosevelt. There were no tutors. No elite schools. No influential family connections. He grew up in one-room cabins in Kentucky and Indiana, splitting rails, clearing fields, and doing whatever work needed doing just to help the family survive.

Books were rare, which made them priceless.

Neighbors remembered the tall, awkward boy who would walk miles simply to borrow one. He read everything he could find, Aesop’s Fables, Robinson Crusoe, the King James Bible, Shakespeare, Blackstone’s Commentaries of English law, anything that happened to cross his path. Ronald White notes that Lincoln wasn’t simply collecting information. He was teaching himself how to reason. Later, as a young lawyer, he even worked through Euclid’s geometry because he believed if he could understand mathematical proof, he would write and argue more clearly.

I have always found that remarkable. Imagine becoming one of America’s greatest writers by deciding you needed to understand geometry. Lincoln believed that if his own thinking became clearer, his words would follow.

They did.

Before Lincoln became known for speeches, however, he became known for something entirely different.

Wrestling.

New Salem, Illinois, was a rough frontier town, and every rough frontier town seemed to have someone everyone knew not to challenge. In New Salem, that man was Jack Armstrong, leader of the Clary’s Grove Boys. They sized up the lanky newcomer and decided the new store clerk needed to be tested.

Armstrong challenged Lincoln to a wrestling match. Lincoln accepted.

Accounts vary on exactly how the contest ended, but every version reaches the same conclusion: Lincoln proved he was nobody’s pushover. When some of Armstrong’s friends began crowding the ring, Lincoln reportedly backed against a wall, raised his fists, and calmly announced that if they wanted a fight, they could all have one.

Instead, Jack Armstrong laughed, shook Lincoln’s hand, and became one of his closest friends. Lincoln had won something more valuable than a wrestling match.

He had earned respect.

One of my favorite Lincoln stories happened years before anyone imagined he might someday become president.

He almost fought a duel.

That sentence feels like it belongs in Alexander Hamilton’s biography.

Not Lincoln’s.

But in 1842, after Lincoln anonymously published several satirical letters ridiculing Illinois State Auditor James Shields, the deeply offended Shields demanded satisfaction. As the challenged man, Lincoln had the privilege of choosing the weapons.

He chose cavalry broadswords. Not because he had suddenly developed dreams of becoming a swashbuckling hero. Because he was six-foot-four with extraordinarily long arms. (I read one source which claims his wingspan was right at 7’)

According to Ronald White, Lincoln even demonstrated his advantage by reaching up and slicing a willow branch far above anyone else’s head. Whether that display persuaded Shields or simply reminded everyone how foolish the whole affair had become, cooler heads prevailed and the duel was canceled before either man drew blood. Lincoln later looked back on the episode with embarrassment, believing his own pride had nearly led him into a tragedy.

I think that story tells us something important.

Even before Lincoln became the Great Emancipator, he already possessed an unusual instinct. He wanted to win. He just didn’t want victory to require unnecessary destruction.

By the time Lincoln entered national politics, people knew him for two things.

He could explain difficult ideas so plainly that ordinary people felt smarter after listening to him, and he could tell a story better than anyone in the room.

Those gifts would carry him through the Illinois legislature, onto the legal circuit, into the famous debates with Stephen Douglas, and eventually onto the national stage.

But none of that had happened yet. For now, Abraham Lincoln was simply a self-educated lawyer from Illinois with an odd sense of humor, an endless appetite for books, and no idea that history was quietly preparing to hand him the heaviest burden any American would ever carry.

For much of his career, Abraham Lincoln was famous for losing.

He lost his first race for the Illinois legislature. He lost business ventures. He lost bids for Congress before finally winning one. He lost a Senate race that many people thought he should have won.

If success were measured only by election night, Abraham Lincoln might have become one of history’s forgotten politicians. Instead, one of his defeats changed America.

The debates with Stephen Douglas in 1858 remain some of the greatest political debates in American history.

Thousands of people gathered in town squares. Newspapers printed every word. Farmers left fields. Shopkeepers closed stores. It was politics treated like the World Series. Douglas was one of the most accomplished politicians in America. He was polished, experienced, and immensely popular. Lincoln was known mostly within Illinois.

By the time the debates ended, Lincoln had lost the Senate election. He had also become impossible for the rest of the country to ignore. Ronald White points out that while Douglas won the office, Lincoln won something much larger. Americans who had never heard him speak suddenly knew exactly who he was and, more importantly, how he thought.

Sometimes history rewards the loser.

When Lincoln was elected president in November 1860, celebration quickly gave way to catastrophe. Before he even took the oath of office, South Carolina left the Union.

Then Mississippi. Florida. Alabama. Georgia. Louisiana. Texas.

By the time Lincoln stood on the Capitol steps in March 1861, nearly a third of the country had already announced it was leaving. (Thanks a lot James Buchanan.)

Imagine beginning a new job under those circumstances. There is no training manual for becoming president of a nation that is dissolving before you’ve even unlocked the front door.

One of the first great decisions Lincoln made wasn’t military. It was personal. He filled his Cabinet with people who had wanted his job. William Seward thought Lincoln was unqualified. Salmon Chase believed he should have been president himself. Edward Bates thought Lincoln was inexperienced. Even Edwin Stanton had once dismissed Lincoln as a long-armed ape and publicly humiliated him during a legal case.

Most presidents would have surrounded themselves with loyal friends. Lincoln surrounded himself with rivals. Not because he enjoyed disagreement but because he wanted the strongest minds he could find.

Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals makes the point beautifully: Lincoln possessed an unusual confidence. He wasn’t threatened by talented people. He believed the country needed them more than his ego needed protecting.

That’s remarkably rare. It still is. Can you image that today…

As the war dragged on, Lincoln found himself making decisions that no president should ever have to make. Every casualty report represented fathers who wouldn’t come home. Brothers who would never grow old. Children who would never know their fathers.

He visited military hospitals constantly, shaking hands until his own hands became swollen. Soldiers later recalled how he lingered beside hospital beds, speaking quietly with wounded men whose names history would never record. More than once, Lincoln left those visits visibly shaken. David Herbert Donald writes that the suffering weighed on him in ways few people around him fully understood.

Those hospital visits changed him. The war changed him.

So did slavery.

One of the things I admire most about Lincoln is that he kept growing.

Today we often imagine Lincoln as though the Emancipation Proclamation sprang fully formed from the day he entered office.

It didn’t.

Lincoln hated slavery long before becoming president, but he also understood that if the border states joined the Confederacy, the Union might not survive. His first responsibility, as he saw it, was preserving the nation.

Then the war itself began changing the question.

Lincoln watched enslaved men and women flee to Union lines seeking freedom. He listened to abolitionists. He read military reports. He watched the conflict become inseparable from slavery itself. And Lincoln changed. Not because he lacked principles. Because he was willing to let reality teach him.

I’ve always believed that’s one of the marks of genuine wisdom. Stubborn people cling to yesterday. Great leaders allow new truths to reshape tomorrow.

The Emancipation Proclamation did not immediately free every enslaved person. It didn’t even apply to the loyal slave states. Critics still point that out today, as though it somehow diminishes its significance.

It doesn’t.

The proclamation transformed the purpose of the war. Saving the Union and ending slavery were no longer separate goals. They had become the same mission. That changed America. It also changed the world.

Then came Gettysburg.

Four months after the battle, Lincoln stood before a crowd expecting a long speech. The featured speaker, Edward Everett, had already spoken for more than two hours.

Lincoln rose.

Spoke for barely two minutes. And quietly delivered 272 words that remain among the greatest ever written in the English language.

I’ve always loved that.

The greatest speech in American history is shorter than most opinion columns. Shorter than this story on him. Lincoln had spent years teaching himself to think clearly. By Gettysburg, he had also learned how to say only what needed saying.

If Abraham Lincoln had died in 1862, history would probably remember him as an overwhelmed wartime president whose best days never arrived. History is funny that way. Sometimes greatness isn’t found in how someone begins. It’s found in how they grow.

That’s one of the reasons Lincoln has always fascinated me. Washington seemed destined for greatness. Hamilton burst onto the scene already brilliant. Jefferson wrote the Declaration before turning thirty-four and Lincoln became Lincoln.

The man who entered the White House in 1861 wasn’t quite the same man who left it in 1865. The war changed him. The burden changed him. The responsibility of sending hundreds of thousands of young Americans into battle changed him.

He never stopped learning. That may have been his greatest strength.

Eventually, Lincoln found the general he had been searching for.

For years he cycled through commanders who hesitated, retreated, or found reasons not to fight. George McClellan built a magnificent army but seemed perpetually convinced he was outnumbered. Others showed flashes of brilliance followed by long stretches of caution.

Then came Ulysses S. Grant.

Grant wasn’t perfect. He drank too much at times. His uniform was often muddy. He wasn’t particularly interested in impressing politicians or newspaper editors.

He simply fought. When critics complained about Grant’s drinking, Lincoln reportedly replied, “If I knew what brand of whiskey he drinks, I’d send a barrel to my other generals.”

Whether those were his exact words is still debated by historians. I almost hope they were. If they aren’t true, they should be, because they sound exactly like Lincoln, he always cared far more about results than appearances.

One of my favorite Lincoln qualities was his refusal to let anger make permanent decisions. When generals disappointed him or politicians infuriated him, he often wrote blistering letters.

Then, he folded them and put them in a drawer.

And never mailed them.

Historians have found dozens of these “hot letters.” They were never meant for history. They were therapy. Lincoln understood something most of us learn too late. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do with the perfect response, is sleep on it.

Despite the unimaginable pressure surrounding him, Lincoln never completely lost the ordinary man underneath the presidency.

He adored his boys.

The White House often felt less like a palace than a family home constantly interrupted by a war. Tad Lincoln raced through the halls with goats, welcomed soldiers, and occasionally wandered into Cabinet meetings as though they were family dinners. Cabinet secretaries sometimes smiled despite themselves because the president did too.

Those little moments matter. They remind us that while the nation saw Abraham Lincoln, his children simply saw Dad.

One of those moments became part of American folklore.

Late in 1863, a turkey named Jack arrived at the White House destined for Thanksgiving dinner.

Tad had other plans.

He begged his father to spare the bird.

Lincoln did.

Whether we call it the first presidential turkey pardon or simply an indulgent father saying yes to his son, I love the story because it happened in the middle of the Civil War. On Lincoln’s desk were casualty lists unlike anything America had ever known. Yet he still found time to save one frightened turkey because it mattered to a little boy.

Sometimes kindness survives because someone refuses to believe there isn’t time for it.

Near the end of the war, Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address.

I’ve always thought it deserves to stand beside Gettysburg and maybe above it.

The speech doesn’t celebrate victory. It doesn’t humiliate the South. It doesn’t pretend one side possessed all the virtue and the other all the blame. Instead, Lincoln reflects on slavery, providence, suffering, and reconciliation with a humility almost unimaginable after four years of bloodshed.

Then came the words that have echoed through every generation since:

“With malice toward none, with charity for all...”

Think about that. Not after a minor political disagreement. After four years of civil war, hundreds of thousands of deaths and seeing the nation nearly destroy itself.

Lincoln wasn’t asking Americans to forget. He was asking them to rebuild.

Five weeks later, he was dead.

John Wilkes Booth’s bullet ended Lincoln’s life just days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. He never saw Reconstruction. He never saw the Thirteenth Amendment fully implemented. He never watched the nation he had preserved begin the long, unfinished work of becoming what it claimed to be.

History rarely gives its greatest figures the chance to enjoy the future they build.

I’ve always thought Lincoln’s greatest legacy wasn’t simply saving the Union. It was changing the meaning of America. Jefferson declared that all men are created equal.

Lincoln insisted those words weren’t merely beautiful, but binding. The Declaration stopped being simply the nation’s birth certificate. Lincoln made it its promise.

That promise wasn’t fulfilled in his lifetime.

It wasn’t fulfilled in the lifetime of Frederick Douglass.

Or Susan B. Anthony.

Or Martin Luther King Jr.

You could make a convincing argument that we’re still trying to fulfill it today.

But every generation that has pushed America closer to its ideals has reached back to Lincoln just as Lincoln reached back to Jefferson. That chain matters as ideas survive because someone refuses to let them die.

I’ve struggled throughout this series to separate accomplishment from influence.

Sometimes they’re the same thing, Sometimes they aren’t. Lincoln certainly accomplished extraordinary things. He preserved the Union. He transformed the Civil War into a fight against slavery. He helped secure passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. He redefined the presidency.

But I don’t think that’s why he’s No. 3.

He’s No. 3 because when America faced the greatest crisis in its history, he somehow became larger than the crisis itself.

And somehow, through all of it, he never stopped believing that the American experiment was worth saving.

George Washington gave America its beginning.

Thomas Jefferson gave America its ideals.

Abraham Lincoln refused to let either one die.

Every baseball manager knows there are seasons you simply can’t plan for.

Your ace tears his shoulder in spring training. Your cleanup hitter blows out a knee in May. Half your bullpen lands on the injured list by July. The manager doesn’t get to choose those problems. He just gets judged by what happens next.

The presidency works the same way.

As I have stated in my Madison essay, Bill Clinton didn’t ask to be dealt the strongest economy in a generation, though he was certainly happy to play that hand. George W. Bush didn’t wake up hoping September 11 would define his presidency. James Madison never volunteered for the War of 1812.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt didn’t choose the Great Depression.

He didn’t choose the Dust Bowl.

And he certainly didn’t choose World War II.

History dealt him perhaps the three hardest hands any American president has ever received, and he kept playing anyway.

That, more than any single law or speech or program, is why he sits at No. 4 on this list.

One of the enduring mysteries of American history is how Franklin Roosevelt became Franklin Roosevelt.

He wasn’t born in a log cabin.

He wasn’t self-made in the way Abraham Lincoln or Alexander Hamilton had been. He grew up at Hyde Park, one of the grand estates overlooking the Hudson River, surrounded by servants, tutors, horses, sailing boats, and every privilege money could provide. If Hamilton spent his youth wondering where his next meal would come from, Roosevelt spent his wondering which books to read next.

On paper, he had every reason to become another pleasant Hudson Valley aristocrat. Instead, he became the champion of people whose lives looked nothing like his own.

Jean Edward Smith calls him the great paradox of American politics: a wealthy patrician who permanently altered the relationship between ordinary Americans and their government.

That transformation didn’t happen overnight. It happened because life kept introducing him to people who lived very differently than he did.

Franklin’s confidence came early.

His mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, adored him with a devotion that bordered on overwhelming. She believed almost instinctively that her son was destined for great things, and children have a remarkable tendency to believe what the people who love them believe.

That confidence never really left him.

Even Eleanor, who understood him as well as anyone ever would, believed that the quiet certainty his mother instilled in him became one of the foundations that allowed him to face impossible circumstances later in life. Doris Kearns Goodwin argues that Roosevelt’s emotional stability rested on two pillars: the unconditional love of his mother and the discipline forced upon him by polio.

It turns out that confidence can be a gift, so can suffering.

If Theodore Roosevelt was the cousin who burst through the front door talking loudly before anyone else had even taken off their coat, Franklin Roosevelt was the cousin who quietly smiled from across the room until everyone eventually wandered over to hear what he had to say.

People often compare the two because they shared a last name. I think they’re fascinating because they solved leadership in opposite ways. Theodore inspired motion. Franklin inspired calm, and America eventually needed both when they were called to serve.

Franklin also made what might have been the smartest political decision of his life.

He married Eleanor Roosevelt.

Actually, that’s selling Eleanor short. Franklin married one of the most remarkable women in American history.

She was Theodore Roosevelt’s niece, painfully shy as a young woman, deeply compassionate, endlessly curious, and far more willing than Franklin to wander into places polite society preferred to ignore. When they became engaged, Theodore happily agreed to give his niece away at the wedding, making the occasion feel almost like a passing of the Roosevelt torch from one generation to another.

Their marriage was never simple.

Franklin’s affair with Lucy Mercer nearly destroyed it. Eleanor formed deep friendships of her own that became the subject of endless speculation. They eventually lived lives that were, in many ways, emotionally separate.

And yet, they became one of the most consequential partnerships in American history. Franklin understood politics and Eleanor understood people. Together, they saw more of America than either one ever could have seen alone.

Then, in the summer of 1921, everything changed.

Roosevelt was thirty-nine years old.

He had already served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He had been the Democratic nominee for vice president. He looked every bit like a future president. Tall, handsome, athletic, he loved sailing, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and anything that got him outdoors.

Then he went on vacation and within days, his legs stopped working. Doctors eventually diagnosed poliomyelitis.

One photograph from that summer has always struck me. It shows Roosevelt visiting a Boy Scout encampment at Palisades Park just before he became ill. Historians believe it is the last photograph ever taken of him standing and walking without assistance. At the time, no one behind the camera could possibly have known they were preserving the end of one life before another began.

For months, Roosevelt wondered if he would ever walk again, and for years, he fought to prove that he still could.

It’s tempting to say polio made Franklin Roosevelt a great president.

I don’t think that’s quite right, I think Polio made him a different man. Before the disease, Roosevelt possessed enormous confidence. Afterward, he added something equally important.

Empathy.

Jean Edward Smith argues that Warm Springs exposed Roosevelt to a kind of poverty he had never truly encountered. Year after year he lived alongside farmers, laborers, and working families whose hardships could not be solved simply by trying harder. The privileged young aristocrat who had once viewed government from a distance began to understand what it felt like to depend upon it.

Suffering has a strange way of introducing people to one another.

Warm Springs, Georgia, became far more than a rehabilitation center.

When Roosevelt first lowered himself into the naturally heated mineral waters, he was astonished by their buoyancy. The water held him upright in ways dry land no longer could. He wrote excitedly to his mother after spending more than an hour in the pool, convinced he had finally found something that might help him recover. Henry Brands describes the place almost like a second home, where Roosevelt paddled, laughed, exercised, made friends with local families, and rediscovered something he feared polio had taken forever: hope.

But the most beautiful part of the story isn’t that Roosevelt found healing there, it’s more that he decided other people deserved the same chance.

He eventually bought Warm Springs and transformed it into a rehabilitation center for thousands of polio patients. He wandered the grounds calling himself “Old Doctor Roosevelt,” leading water exercises, encouraging discouraged patients, joking with children, and convincing people who had almost given up that tomorrow might still be better than today.

That doesn’t sound much like a politician, more like someone learning how to lead.

When Franklin Roosevelt stood on the Capitol steps on March 4, 1933, the United States wasn’t simply in an economic depression, It was in the middle of a panic.

Those are different things.

Factories had closed. Nearly one out of every four workers had lost a job. Families who had done everything right suddenly found themselves standing in bread lines. Farmers watched crops fail while banks failed even faster. By the time Roosevelt took the oath of office, banks in state after state had simply shut their doors because too many frightened customers had rushed to withdraw their money all at once. Money itself had become something people no longer trusted.

Confidence had disappeared and once confidence disappears, economies become surprisingly fragile. Hamilton had understood that more than a century earlier.

So did Roosevelt.

That is why I think his most famous line is often misunderstood.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

We’ve turned it into a motivational poster. What Roosevelt meant something far more practical.

Fear was causing perfectly healthy banks to collapse. If everyone believes a bank is about to fail, everyone rushes to pull out their money. The bank, unable to produce everyone’s deposits at once, actually fails.

Fear had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Roosevelt wasn’t telling Americans to “think positive.” He was trying to stop the panic before it destroyed the country.

One of his first acts as president was something that sounded almost crazy.

He closed every bank in America. Can you imagine that happening today. No checking account or ATM or direct deposit or even online banking. Everything simply, Stopped.

Then the government inspected the banks one by one. Healthy banks reopened first. Weak ones remained closed until they could be repaired or reorganized. Americans waited nervously to see what would happen.

Then Roosevelt sat down behind a radio microphone.

The Fireside Chats remain one of the greatest communication ideas any president has ever had. It’s difficult for us to appreciate today because we’re surrounded by podcasts, livestreams, social media, cable news, YouTube, and a thousand competing voices.

In 1933, families gathered around one radio. Then the President started talking.

Not shouting or yelling or calling people dumb. Talking.

He explained banking in ordinary English. He described why the banks had closed, what inspectors were doing, and why people could trust the institutions that reopened. He never sounded like a lecturer. He sounded like the neighbor who happened to understand finance a little better than you did.

Millions listened. Even more remarkable, millions believed him. When the banks reopened, Americans deposited more money than they withdrew.

Think about that. His greatest economic victory may have begun with a conversation. Jean Edward Smith argues that Roosevelt possessed an almost uncanny ability to explain complicated problems without making people feel foolish. The Fireside Chats weren’t simply speeches. They were lessons in confidence.

The New Deal has become one of the most argued-over chapters in American history.

Some believe it saved American capitalism. Others believe it permanently expanded the federal government beyond what the Founders intended.

Reasonable people can, and still do, disagree. But regardless of where someone lands politically, it’s difficult to deny the sheer scale of Roosevelt’s response. He wasn’t interested in one solution. He tried dozens. Some succeeded brilliantly and some failed completely.

Roosevelt himself joked that if one method didn’t work, he’d simply admit it and try another. For a politician, that was a surprisingly scientific approach.

The Civilian Conservation Corps might still be my favorite New Deal program.

It put hundreds of thousands of unemployed young men to work planting forests, building trails, fighting soil erosion, constructing campgrounds, restoring parks, and improving public lands across the country.

If you’ve ever hiked a trail through a national forest, crossed a stone bridge in a state park, or admired one of those beautiful rustic park shelters built from native rock and timber, there's a decent chance the CCC built it.

Those young men planted more than three billion trees. Three billion. Sometimes history leaves monuments. Sometimes it leaves forests.

Roosevelt also believed electricity shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for cities.

The Tennessee Valley Authority transformed one of America’s poorest regions through dams, flood control, navigation improvements, and rural electrification. Families who had lived their entire lives without electric lights suddenly found themselves reading after sunset, refrigerating food, pumping clean water, and using appliances that urban Americans had almost begun taking for granted.

It’s easy to underestimate what electricity meant. It didn’t simply make life easier, it expanded life. I’m convinced if it wasn't for the TVA, there would still be parts of that region without power today.

One of the most enduring pieces of Roosevelt’s presidency actually bears someone else’s fingerprints.

Frances Perkins.

You’ve already met her in this series.

She had carried the lessons of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire into Roosevelt’s administration, and together they built Social Security, a promise that Americans who worked their entire lives would not necessarily face old age alone.

The law has been amended countless times. Argued over endlessly. Predicted to collapse every few years. Yet generation after generation continues to rely on it. That is influence.

While Roosevelt battled economic collapse, nature decided to pile on.

Years of drought, poor farming practices, and relentless winds turned huge portions of the Great Plains into the Dust Bowl. Black clouds of topsoil rolled across states like enormous storms. Families swept dirt off their dinner tables only to find more waiting by bedtime. Some tied damp cloths over children’s faces while they slept so they wouldn’t inhale dust through the night.

It almost sounds fictional. It wasn’t. The Depression wasn’t one crisis. It was several happening at once. It did lead to one of my favorite solutions, the Shelter Belt.

If Franklin Roosevelt became the nation’s voice during those years, Eleanor became its eyes.

She traveled constantly. Coal mines. Tenant farms. Segregated schools. Military hospitals. Mining towns. Indian reservations.

She went places presidents rarely visited and then returned to tell Franklin exactly what she had seen. Doris Kearns Goodwin describes Eleanor as Roosevelt’s indispensable field reporter, bringing home stories and perspectives that statistics alone could never provide.

She wasn’t always gentle with him and was some of the few who challenged him and pushed him and sometimes she simply refused to let him ignore suffering that others found easy to overlook.

Great presidents often have great advisors, Franklin Roosevelt happened to marry his.

One story captures Eleanor perfectly.

In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow the great Black contralto (rarest classical singing voice type) Marian Anderson to perform in Constitution Hall because of her race.

So, Eleanor resigned from the organization, then she helped arrange a different concert, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Which more than 75,000 people attended and millions more listened on the radio.

I love this story, sometimes it’s as easy as just deciding exactly where to place a stage.

Just when it seemed Franklin Roosevelt had finally steered America out of one catastrophe, another arrived.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor. Battleships burned. More than 2,400 Americans were killed. By the next day, the United States was at war.

Roosevelt didn’t panic. He had spent nearly a decade learning how to speak to frightened Americans and now he would have to do it again.

His address to Congress lasted barely seven minutes, yet it became one of the defining speeches in American history. Most Americans remember the phrase, “a date which will live in infamy.” What often gets overlooked is the calm confidence that surrounded those famous words. Roosevelt wasn’t trying to inflame the country nearly as much as he was trying to steady it.

Leadership, once again, meant convincing millions of people that tomorrow was still worth believing in.

In many ways, Roosevelt had been preparing the nation long before Pearl Harbor.

He watched Adolf Hitler’s rise with growing alarm while much of America wanted desperately to stay out of another European war. Roosevelt understood the country’s reluctance. The memory of World War I still lingered, and isolationism remained politically popular.

So he moved carefully and he strengthened the military and he supported Britain through Lend-Lease.

He famously called the United States the “Arsenal of Democracy,” arguing that America’s factories could become as important as its soldiers. Before long, Detroit wasn’t simply building automobiles anymore. It was building tanks. Typewriter companies produced rifles. Vacuum cleaner factories manufactured aircraft parts. The greatest industrial economy in the world became the greatest military supplier the world had ever seen.

Henry Ford had helped teach America how to build things quickly, and Franklin Roosevelt asked the country to build freedom the same way.

Another one of my favorite Roosevelt stories from the war has nothing to do with strategy.

It involves a dog.

Fala, the little Scottish Terrier who followed Roosevelt almost everywhere, became one of the most recognizable dogs in America. Political opponents eventually spread a ridiculous rumor that Roosevelt had accidentally left Fala behind during a trip to the Aleutian Islands and had supposedly sent a Navy destroyer back to retrieve him at enormous taxpayer expense.

The story wasn’t true and Roosevelt could have ignored it.

Instead, he turned it into comedy. At a campaign speech in 1944, he joked that while attacks against him never bothered him, Fala deeply resented the accusations.

“His Scotch soul was furious.”

The audience erupted in laughter. I’ve always admired that moment. Even in the middle of a world war, Roosevelt understood that sometimes a country needs permission to laugh.

Humor, too, can steady people.

There were lighter moments in the White House as well.

In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth became the first reigning British monarchs ever to visit the United States. Roosevelt welcomed them not with an elaborate state banquet but with an American cookout.

The menu?

Hot dogs.

Some critics were horrified. A king eating hot dogs seemed beneath the dignity of the occasion. The King apparently enjoyed them just fine. I’ve always loved that story because it feels unmistakably American. If you’re going to visit the United States, you might as well eat like everyone else.

Roosevelt’s greatest strength may have been something impossible to measure.

Hope.

Not blind optimism and definitely not pretending everything would be fine. Hope rooted in confidence that problems, even enormous ones, could be solved if free people worked together.

You hear that confidence throughout the Four Freedoms speech. Roosevelt didn’t merely speak about defeating Germany and Japan. He imagined a postwar world built upon freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Whether the world has fully achieved those ideals remains an open question.

The fact that we’re still talking about them more than eighty years later says something about the power of the vision.

Of course, no honest look at Franklin Roosevelt can ignore the darker chapters.

The internment of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans remains one of the gravest violations of civil liberties in our nation’s history. Many families lost homes, businesses, farms, and years of their lives despite having committed no crime beyond sharing the ancestry of America’s enemy. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066.

That decision belongs to his legacy.

So does his failed attempt to expand the Supreme Court after justices repeatedly struck down parts of the New Deal. His plan alarmed many Americans, including members of his own party, who feared he was upsetting the constitutional balance between the branches of government.

Greatness isn’t the absence of mistakes, sadly history rarely gives us that luxury.

It asks instead whether the achievements outweigh them. Readers will answer that question differently. They should.

By the spring of 1945, Roosevelt looked exhausted.

The smile remained, and the cigarette holder still tilted upward at its familiar angle. But the years had taken their toll.

On April 12, while sitting for a portrait at Warm Springs, Georgia, Roosevelt complained of a terrible headache. Moments later, he collapsed from a massive cerebral hemorrhage.

He was gone within hours. Harry Truman suddenly found himself President of the United States. Less than a month later, Germany surrendered. Four months after that, Japan surrendered as well. Roosevelt never lived to celebrate the victory he had spent years leading America toward.

I’ve often thought about the way Roosevelt’s life came full circle.

The man who arrived at Warm Springs searching for hope ended his life there. The place that had given him back his confidence became the place where his remarkable journey ended. There is something fitting about that.

Warm Springs never completely healed Franklin Roosevelt’s legs. It healed something even more important. It transformed an ambitious politician into a leader capable of understanding suffering that privilege alone never could have taught him.

Franklin Roosevelt permanently changed the relationship between Americans and their government.

Whether that change was entirely for better or not is a debate that has never really ended. It probably never will. But influence isn’t measured by unanimity. It’s measured by how long it lasts.

Millions of retirees receive Social Security because of Franklin Roosevelt.

Millions of Americans trust that their bank deposits will still be there tomorrow because of reforms born during his administration.

Families hike trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps without realizing who first sent those young men into the forests. Rural communities still benefit from dams, power lines, and infrastructure that transformed entire regions of the country. And when Americans face national crises, they still instinctively look toward Washington expecting leadership.

That expectation, more than any single law, may be Roosevelt’s greatest legacy.

History dealt him three impossible hands.

He didn’t play them perfectly. No one could have. But he played them well enough that America was still standing when the cards were finally laid on the table.

And sometimes.

That’s exactly what greatness looks like.

If someone told you this afternoon that they had a meeting in London tomorrow morning, you probably wouldn’t think much about it.

You might ask what airline. You might complain about airport security. You might wonder whether they managed to get upgraded. You would almost certainly not question whether the trip itself was possible.

That’s easy to forget.

For almost all of human history, distance was one of life’s unchangeable facts. Oceans separated civilizations. Mountains isolated communities. Families said goodbye knowing they might never see one another again. The Atlantic Ocean wasn’t simply wide.

It was final.

Then, on a cold December morning in 1903, two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio, made the world smaller.

Not all at once. Their first flight lasted only twelve seconds.

But after those twelve seconds, every ocean became a little narrower, every continent a little closer, and every generation that followed inherited a planet that felt just a little less impossible.

People often say the Wright brothers invented the airplane.

That’s close, but it isn’t quite right.

There were airplanes before the Wright brothers. There were gliders. There were engines. There were brilliant scientists, wealthy inventors, and government-funded experiments. Men had been trying to solve the mystery of flight for centuries.

The Wright brothers solved a different problem. They invented controlled flight and there’s a reason that’s more important. Flying once doesn’t change history.

Flying whenever, and wherever, you choose to fly changes everything.

One of my favorite things about Wilbur and Orville Wright is how utterly ordinary they appeared. They weren’t professors or military officers. Neither had attended college.

They didn’t work for a university or receive government grants. They weren’t backed by wealthy investors or famous laboratories. They repaired bicycles for a living, wore shop aprons over their suits, kept a joint bank account, and still lived at home with their father and sister well into adulthood. David McCullough describes them as almost inseparable. They worked together six days a week, shared nearly every meal, and often seemed to think as one mind with four hands. Their father liked to say they were “inseparable as twins,” despite being four years apart.

If you had walked into their bicycle shop in Dayton in 1898, you would not have guessed you were standing in history. You would have guessed your tire needed air.

The story really begins years earlier with one of the greatest Christmas presents in American history.

Their father, Bishop Milton Wright, returned home one day carrying a small toy helicopter made of cork, bamboo, paper, and twisted rubber bands. It had been designed by the French inventor Alphonse Pénaud. Milton held it in his hands, released it, and watched as it fluttered toward the ceiling.

The boys were captivated. They flew it until it broke, so they built another.

Orville would later say that the little toy planted a seed that never stopped growing. McCullough writes that the brothers always traced their fascination with flight back to that simple gift from their father.

It reminds me that history sometimes it begins with a father bringing home a toy.

The Wright family itself deserves more credit than it usually receives.

Milton Wright believed children should ask questions. He filled the house with books instead of luxuries and encouraged curiosity without trying to dictate where it might lead. Their mother, Susan, possessed remarkable mechanical ability. She built toys, repaired household objects, and seemed capable of making almost anything with her hands. Orville later admitted that whatever mechanical talent he and Wilbur possessed came largely from her. Their sister Katharine, the only college graduate in the family, became the emotional center of the household. She encouraged the brothers, handled many of the social obligations they happily avoided, and quietly gave them the freedom to spend years chasing what most people considered an impossible dream.

History remembers the Wright brothers, but it really should remember the Wright family.

The bicycle business turned out to be the perfect education. That sounds strange until you think about what riding a bicycle actually is. A bicycle is not naturally stable. Push one down a hill by itself and it immediately falls over.

A child climbs aboard and wobbles. An experienced rider climbs aboard and glides effortlessly down the road. The bicycle hasn’t changed, just the rider.

Most of the world’s aviation pioneers, including the distinguished Samuel Langley, believed the challenge was to build an aircraft stable enough to fly by itself. The Wright brothers saw something entirely different. Their years repairing and riding bicycles convinced them that instability wasn’t a flaw. It was simply something a skilled operator learned to manage. Author Peter Jakab argues that this insight separated the Wrights from virtually every serious competitor of their era. They weren’t trying to eliminate the need for a pilot.

They were inventing one. That realization may have been the single most important breakthrough in aviation history.

Samuel Langley was no fool, Quite the opposite actually. He was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, one of the nation’s most respected scientists, supported by government funding, talented assistants, and an engine superior to anything the Wright brothers possessed. If you had asked almost anyone around 1900 who would first conquer powered flight, Langley would have been the overwhelming favorite.

He failed and the Wright brothers succeeded.

Not because they had better resources, because they were asking a better question. Langley wanted a machine that could take care of itself, and the Wrights wanted to teach a human being how to fly it. That difference changed the world.

Another man deserves mention here.

Octave Chanute.

If the Wright brothers were the stars of this story, Chanute was its mentor.

An accomplished engineer nearly forty years older than Wilbur, Chanute had spent years collecting every experiment, success, failure, and wild idea anyone had ever attempted in the pursuit of flight. His remarkable book, Progress in Flying Machines, became the textbook from which the Wright brothers began their education. More importantly, Chanute answered letters. He encouraged young experimenters. He shared information freely at a time when many inventors guarded every secret.

He believed knowledge should be passed along and the Wright brothers agreed. Their friendship became one of the great partnerships in the history of invention.

So the brothers didn’t begin by building an airplane, but began by learning. They devoured Chanute’s work. They studied Otto Lilienthal’s glider experiments. They read everything they could find about birds, wind, lift, balance, and control. When they finally traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they didn’t arrive carrying certainty. They arrived carrying questions because the Wright brothers never considered themselves dreamers, they considered themselves students.

And the first lesson they learned was perhaps the most important of all.

Before you can build a machine that flies, you have to understand what it means to be the one flying it.

By the time Wilbur and Orville Wright arrived at Kitty Hawk in 1900, they already knew something that almost everyone else in aviation had missed. The airplane wasn’t the hardest problem, the pilot was and that realization changed everything they did.

While other inventors rushed to bolt larger engines onto larger machines, the Wright brothers slowed down. They had no interest in becoming the first men to leap briefly into the air if they couldn’t control where they landed. They wanted something much more ambitious. They wanted an airplane that could be flown on purpose. That meant learning to fly before they built an airplane capable of doing it.

Their first flying machines weren’t really airplanes at all, they were more like… man carrying kites. That surprised me when I first learned it.

The brothers intentionally tethered some of their early machines to the ground, allowing them to study how the wings responded to steady winds without worrying about long glides or dangerous crashes. Peter Jakab points out that these kite experiments let them isolate one problem at a time, which is exactly how great engineers think. They weren’t trying to prove they could fly.

They were trying to understand why flight worked. Every successful experiment raised another question. Every failure became another lesson.

Kitty Hawk itself wasn’t chosen because it was famous. It became famous because they chose it. The Outer Banks offered something few other places could provide: strong, reliable winds, wide stretches of soft sand, and enough isolation that two quiet bicycle mechanics could spend weeks crashing strange-looking machines without attracting much attention.

It was, in many ways, the world’s largest laboratory and laboratories are supposed to contain failures. The Wright brothers had plenty.

One of the things I admire most about Wilbur and Orville is that they refused to worship experts.

That sounds almost arrogant. It wasn’t, it was more scientific.

The accepted aerodynamic data of the day came largely from Otto Lilienthal, whose glider experiments had inspired the brothers in the first place. They respected him immensely. But as their own gliders accumulated flight after flight, something didn’t add up. Their machines weren’t producing the lift the accepted formulas predicted.

Most people would have assumed they were making mistakes. The Wright brothers wondered if the textbooks were. That’s a dangerous question and also the question that changes history.

So they built a wind tunnel. Not a government laboratory, or university research center. It was a homemade wooden box, roughly six feet long, with a fan at one end and tiny test wings mounted inside. There, over weeks of painstaking work, they tested more than two hundred different wing shapes and gathered thousands of measurements. Tom Crouch notes that the wind tunnel became their greatest scientific breakthrough because it allowed them to replace guesswork with reliable data. The brothers weren’t simply building an airplane anymore.

They were inventing modern aeronautical engineering. It’s one of my favorite moments in American history. The numbers disagreed with the experts, so the Wright brothers trusted the numbers.

There is a wonderful Orville Wright quote that captures their mindset.

“Isn’t it astonishing that all these secrets have been preserved for so many years just so that we could discover them?”

I love that. Orville wasn’t saying they were smarter than everyone else. He was marveling that nature had patiently waited for someone willing to ask the right questions.

Even after solving the mathematics of lift, another enormous problem remained.

Engines.

The automobile industry was still in its infancy, and no manufacturer made an engine that was both light enough and powerful enough for flight. Most inventors would have waited for someone else to build one.

The Wright brothers walked into the back room of their bicycle shop and asked their mechanic, Charlie Taylor, if he thought he could make one.

He had never built an airplane engine before, neither had anyone else. So, Taylor simply smiled and went to work.

In just six weeks, using little more than his machine tools, skill, and intuition, he built the lightweight four-cylinder engine that would power the Flyer. He rarely sought recognition afterward, which may be why history doesn’t mention him nearly enough.

It should. Every great achievement has names that end up in textbooks, it also has Charlie Taylors.

The brothers even had to invent their own propellers. What? I always thought of a propeller as a spinning fan.

The Wrights realized it behaved much more like a rotating wing. Since no scientific formulas existed for designing efficient propellers, they created those too, eventually producing propellers that were astonishingly efficient even by modern standards. David McCullough points out that they solved not one engineering problem but several entirely new fields of engineering at the same time.

It’s easy to say they invented the airplane. It’s more accurate to say they invented almost everything the airplane needed.

Finally, after years of failures, calculations, gliders, kites, wind tunnels, homemade engines, and countless adjustments measured in fractions of an inch, the morning of December 17, 1903, arrived.

The wind was cold. The sand was damp. Five local men helped steady the machine.

Orville climbed aboard and Wilbur ran beside the wingtip.

The Flyer lifted into the air.

Twelve seconds.

One hundred twenty feet.

History has a strange habit of disguising itself as ordinary moments. There was no cheering crowd or brass band, not even a single newspaper reporter. Just a handful of witnesses watching two brothers prove that humanity had crossed a line from which it would never return.

When the fourth flight that day stretched to 852 feet and lasted fifty-nine seconds, the experiment was over. The age of flight had begun. The remarkable thing is that the Wright brothers didn’t celebrate very long. They packed up and went home.

And immediately started figuring out how to make it better and I love that. For Wilbur and Orville Wright, success wasn’t the finish line, it was simply the next experiment.

If you think the world immediately celebrated the Wright brothers after December 17, 1903, It didn’t. In fact, one of the strangest parts of the story is how little attention they received. Their hometown newspaper barely noticed. Many journalists assumed the reports coming out of Kitty Hawk had been exaggerated or misunderstood. After all, newspapers had spent years publishing stories about inventors who claimed they had solved flight only to watch their machines crash spectacularly into rivers or explode across fields.

The Wright brothers sounded like just another entry on a long list of dreamers. The difference, of course, was that they weren’t dreaming anymore. They had receipts.

Ironically, Europe believed them before America did. When Wilbur traveled to France in 1908 to demonstrate the Flyer, even many of the spectators arrived expecting another disappointment. Then Wilbur climbed into the machine, circled effortlessly through the sky, banked gracefully, and landed exactly where he intended.

The crowd stood in stunned silence, they weren’t amazed that a machine had flown., they were amazed that someone was flying it.

One French newspaper summed up the mood perfectly after watching him maneuver through the air:

“He is no longer merely flying. He is directing his flight.”

That was the breakthrough. Not lifting the plane, not the power of it, but how they controlled it. The audience understood immediately that they weren’t watching a novelty. They were watching the future.

Back home, America finally caught up.

Military officers suddenly became interested. Governments realized airplanes might someday become tools of war. Businessmen imagined carrying passengers. Engineers began improving speeds, engines, and materials.

The Wright brothers had opened a door. The rest of the world rushed through it.

There is another detail about the brothers that has always touched me. After 1908, Wilbur and Orville made a promise to their father. They would never fly together again. They knew the risks better than anyone alive. If an accident happened, they wanted at least one brother to survive and continue the work.

Think about that for a moment.

The two men who trusted each other more than anyone else on Earth voluntarily stopped sharing the cockpit because the work had become more important than either one of them. There is something adorable about that.

Then came heartbreak.

In 1912, Wilbur Wright contracted typhoid fever. Within weeks, he was dead.

He was only forty-five years old.

Orville later said, “Wilbur was almost superhuman.”

I don’t think that was simply a grieving brother speaking, as history agrees.

Wilbur had always been the strategist, the philosopher, the one who seemed able to visualize solutions before anyone else could even see the problem. Orville often described their partnership as so complete that neither brother could honestly separate his own ideas from the other’s.

Losing Wilbur was like losing half of himself.

Orville lived another thirty-six years.

That meant he witnessed something extraordinary.

When he first lifted off the sand at Kitty Hawk, the Flyer traveled about thirty miles an hour. Before he died in 1948, he had watched aircraft cross the Atlantic, carry passengers around the globe, fight two world wars, and approach the speed of sound.

Imagine inventing something and living long enough to watch it transform civilization.

One of my favorite moments came much later.

When Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk on the Moon, he carried with him a small piece of fabric and a fragment of wood from the original 1903 Wright Flyer. I can’t imagine a more fitting tribute.

Sixty-six years earlier, the Flyer had remained airborne for twelve seconds, and now part of it had traveled nearly a quarter of a million miles to another world. History occasionally writes poetry, and this was one of those moments.

Much like the Apollo missions, I’ve always believed every great achievement has famous names and forgotten ones.

The Wright brothers knew that better than anyone.

There was Charlie Taylor, building an engine no one had ever built before.

There was Octave Chanute, encouraging young experimenters through countless letters and refusing to hoard knowledge.

There was Katharine Wright, running the household, entertaining visitors, calming nerves, handling reporters, and giving her brothers the freedom to devote years to a dream that paid almost nothing. David McCullough goes so far as to suggest that without Katharine, the brothers’ story would almost certainly have unfolded very differently.

History remembers Wilbur and Orville and it should, But history should also remember that even the greatest inventions are rarely built alone.

People will ask why the Wright brothers rank this high on my list? Fair. It’s because they didn’t simply invent a machine. They changed humanity’s relationship with distance.

For thousands of years, geography had the final word. Oceans divided families. Mountains isolated cultures. Crossing a continent required months. Crossing an ocean required weeks. The Wright brothers looked at those limitations and quietly decided they were engineering problems.

Today we think nothing of eating breakfast in New York and dinner in Paris. Fresh flowers arrive from South America. Organs for transplant cross states in hours. College students study abroad. Grandparents attend weddings on the other side of the country. Humanitarian aid reaches disaster zones overnight.

I’ve written in this series about Samuel Morse shrinking America with the telegraph. Malcolm McLean shrank the cost of moving goods. Willis Carrier made much of the South and Southwest livable.

The Wright brothers made the planet smaller.

That alone earns them a place near the top of this list, but I don’t think their greatest breakthrough was the airplane. It was the question they asked.

Samuel Langley had more money, better connections, a more powerful engine, and the full weight of the Smithsonian behind him. The Wright brothers had a bicycle shop.

Langley tried to build an airplane that could fly itself.

The Wrights knew better.

Years of repairing bicycles had taught them that balance isn’t built into the machine. A bicycle stays upright because its rider constantly makes tiny corrections. They believed an airplane would work the same way.

They were right.

Sometimes history changes not because someone builds a better machine, but because someone understands people a little better.

On a windswept stretch of sand at Kitty Hawk, two bicycle mechanics didn’t simply teach a machine to fly.

They taught the world that the horizon wasn’t a boundary.

It was an invitation.

I’ve noticed something while writing this series.

Every one of the people near the top of this list had a different superpower.

Henry Ford could take something complicated and make it available to everyone.

Thomas Edison could turn experimentation into an industry.

Alexander Hamilton built systems almost faster than anyone else could understand them.

Thomas Jefferson’s gift was different.

He could see tomorrow.

Long before America became a continental nation, Jefferson imagined one. Long before public education became common, he believed an informed citizenry would be the foundation of a republic. Long before the Library of Congress became the nation’s intellectual treasure, he envisioned a country whose greatest wealth would not be measured only in acres or dollars, but in knowledge.

Jefferson was rarely content with the America that existed. His mind was almost always living in the America that could. That was his genius.

It also became, at times, his greatest blind spot.

One of the reasons Jefferson fascinates me is that he almost never stopped learning. Some people collect trophies. Jefferson collected questions.

He wanted to know how governments worked. He wanted to know how plants grew. He wanted to know why fossils appeared on mountaintops, how architecture influenced behavior, what languages Native Americans spoke, whether sheep from Spain produced finer wool than sheep from Virginia, and which grape varieties might someday thrive on American soil.

His curiosity had no off switch. One of his best biographers, John Meacham describes Jefferson as a man driven by inquiry, and that’s exactly right. Curiosity wasn’t simply one of his personality traits. It was the engine that powered everything else. He carried that curiosity everywhere.

Jefferson kept meticulous weather records for decades, jotting down temperatures and conditions with remarkable consistency. He filled notebooks with observations about agriculture, inventions, architecture, and daily life. Friends joked that almost nothing escaped his notice because almost nothing failed to interest him.

I’ve always thought that’s one of the hidden lessons of history. The most influential people are often the most curious people. Jefferson didn’t wake up one morning and decide to write the Declaration of Independence. He spent years preparing himself without even realizing it.

When Jefferson arrived in Philadelphia in 1775, he wasn’t the loudest delegate in the Continental Congress. That distinction belonged to John Adams.

He wasn’t the most famous. That belonged to Benjamin Franklin.

He wasn’t the commanding military hero. That was George Washington.

Jefferson possessed something else. When it came time to explain why thirteen colonies should separate from the most powerful empire on earth, everyone looked toward the young Virginian with the remarkable pen.

Adams later admitted the choice was obvious. Jefferson wrote better than anyone else.

The Declaration of Independence has become so familiar that it’s easy to forget what an astonishing piece of writing it really is.

Jefferson wasn’t merely announcing independence, it was more of a explanation of it.

He understood that revolutions don’t survive on anger alone. They survive when people believe there is a moral reason for what they’re doing. So he reached beyond taxes and tea and individual grievances. He appealed instead to universal principles.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...”

History has a way of sanding those words smooth because we’ve heard them so often.

Try reading them again as though no one had ever written them before.

Kings ruled because they inherited power. Empires expanded because they possessed armies. Jefferson suggested something radically different. Governments existed because ordinary people allowed them to exist. That single idea has outlived every king who dismissed it.

Of course, Jefferson didn’t write the Declaration alone.

Benjamin Franklin trimmed some of Jefferson’s excesses, softening a few phrases and sharpening others. John Adams pushed, encouraged, and defended the document when debate grew difficult. Jefferson later admitted that the Declaration represented “the harmonizing sentiments of the day,” not merely his own.

That’s worth remembering. Even America’s most famous document was a collaboration. History often remembers the author forgets the editors, and they matter.

Jefferson’s greatest classroom may not have been Philadelphia. It may have been Paris. As America’s minister to France after the Revolution, he immersed himself in everything Europe had to offer. He wandered galleries. He studied Roman architecture. He toured gardens, examined farming techniques, collected books by the hundreds, tasted wines, and filled crates with seeds, ideas, and inventions that he hoped might improve life back home. Some Americans traveled to Europe and became more European. Jefferson traveled to Europe hoping to become more useful to America.

His letters from France reveal someone who seemed incapable of walking into a building without studying how it had been designed. He admired proportions. He noticed light. He measured staircases. He sketched floor plans. He wasn’t simply sightseeing. He was taking notes. That habit never left him.

Monticello wasn’t merely a beautiful house perched atop a Virginia hill. It was Jefferson’s laboratory. Hidden dumbwaiters allowed wine bottles to appear without servants entering the dining room. A revolving bookstand let him consult several volumes at once. He owned one of the earliest polygraph copying machines, allowing him to keep copies of the thousands upon thousands of letters he wrote. Skylights, hidden storage, ingenious clocks, and carefully planned spaces reflected a man who believed that even buildings should keep learning. He didn’t simply decorate his home, he experimented with it.

Books, however, remained his greatest love.

Jefferson once wrote, “I cannot live without books.”

I believe him.

His personal library eventually grew into one of the finest collections in America because he refused to think of reading as a hobby. Books were tools. They were teachers. They were companions. If he wanted to understand architecture, he bought books. If he wanted to improve farming, he bought books. If he became fascinated by Native American languages, ancient history, astronomy, law, philosophy, or botany...

He bought more books. Jefferson rarely met a subject he didn’t think was worth understanding.

One of my favorite Jefferson stories isn’t about politics at all.

It’s about music.

Despite everything else competing for his attention, Jefferson remained an accomplished violinist throughout much of his life. Friends remembered evenings when he would happily disappear into music after long days of public business. I’ve always liked that image because it reminds us that the man who wrote the Declaration wasn’t simply a statesman.

He was, in many ways, an artist. Perhaps that’s why the Declaration reads less like legislation and more like literature. Jefferson understood something every great writer eventually learns. Facts convince the mind but words move the heart and in the summer of 1776, America needed both.

Thomas Jefferson once said that he preferred “the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.”

He was almost always looking over the next hill. He wanted to know what the nation might become if people simply had enough freedom, enough education, and enough room to grow. He wasn’t interested in preserving America exactly as he found it.

He wanted to improve it. That made him both an inspiring visionary and, occasionally, a frustrating idealist.

His presidency presented him with the perfect example.

For years, Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton had fought over how to read the Constitution. Hamilton believed it should be interpreted broadly enough to allow the federal government to meet challenges the Framers could never specifically list. Jefferson insisted that if the Constitution didn’t explicitly grant a power, the federal government probably shouldn’t exercise it.

The disagreement wasn’t academic.

I’ve addressed this before, but here again because it is so interesting.

Hamilton argued that the Constitution allowed Congress to create a national bank, even though the document never mentioned one. Jefferson objected. If the Constitution didn’t specifically authorize it, he believed, then the government had no business creating it.

Hamilton saw the Constitution as a framework. Jefferson often treated it more like a blueprint. Then Napoleon Bonaparte changed everything.

In 1803, France unexpectedly offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory.

Jefferson suddenly found himself staring at perhaps the greatest real estate opportunity in human history. For roughly fifteen million dollars, the United States could double in size, secure control of the Mississippi River, and remove France as a major power from North America.

There was just one problem. The Constitution never specifically says the President can buy half a continent. Jefferson knew it.

He even considered asking for a constitutional amendment before realizing that Napoleon might not wait while Americans debated constitutional theory.

So Jefferson did exactly what circumstances demanded. He acted. Then came one of history’s wonderful ironies.

The strict constructionist not only embraced a broad reading of presidential power to make the purchase, he relied on Alexander Hamilton’s financial system, and Hamilton’s national bank, to help finance it.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate while writing this series, and I’ll repeat myself for those of you not paying attention, (yes, you Mason), is that governing has a way of humbling even our strongest philosophies. History doesn’t always wait while politicians settle theoretical arguments.

The Louisiana Purchase wasn’t merely about land. For Jefferson, it was about possibility. Most presidents would have looked at 828,000 square miles and seen farms, rivers, and forests. Jefferson saw questions.

What plants grew there? What animals had never been described? What mountains lay beyond the horizon? Which Native nations called it home? What languages did they speak? Could there be a practical route to the Pacific? His curiosity immediately became America’s curiosity.

That is why I have always thought Lewis and Clark received the greatest homework assignment in American history.

Jefferson’s instructions read less like military orders than a professor assigning a semester-long research project. Observe the rivers. Record the mountains. Collect unknown plants and animals. Study the soil. Meet the Native nations. Learn their customs. Establish trade. Look for a practical route to the Pacific. Bring back everything.

Jefferson wanted maps, certainly. But he wanted knowledge even more.

The expedition returned with hundreds of previously unknown plant and animal specimens, detailed maps, Native vocabularies, astronomical observations, and enough scientific information to occupy scholars for generations.

That was exactly what Jefferson had hoped for.

One of my favorite little Jefferson quirks found its way into the expedition.

He had become fascinated by enormous fossil bones discovered in Virginia and elsewhere. Jefferson convinced himself that giant creatures, perhaps even living mammoths, might still roam the unexplored American West. The scientific world increasingly believed such animals were extinct. Jefferson wasn’t entirely convinced.

So while Lewis and Clark were looking for rivers and mountain passes, part of Jefferson secretly hoped they might stumble across a living mammoth. They didn’t.

But I admire the optimism.

Jefferson’s love of knowledge appeared again after one of the darkest moments of the War of 1812. In August 1814, British troops marched into Washington and burned the Capitol, the White House, and the Library of Congress. Thousands of books vanished in the flames.

Jefferson didn’t simply mourn the loss. He offered Congress his own library. More than six thousand volumes covering history, science, philosophy, religion, architecture, agriculture, mathematics, literature, and virtually every subject imaginable. Some members of Congress complained that Jefferson’s collection contained too many books unrelated to government.

Jefferson’s answer was wonderfully Jefferson.

A legislature, he believed, should know about everything.

Congress agreed, purchasing his library for $23,950. The price was well below what the collection was truly worth, but it accomplished two things at once. It gave the young nation the foundation for a new Library of Congress, and it provided Jefferson some desperately needed financial relief. Years of generous living, ambitious building projects at Monticello, and chronic debt had left him in difficult financial circumstances. In a very Jeffersonian way, the books he had spent a lifetime collecting ended up serving both his country and himself one last time.

The modern Library of Congress still owes much of its foundation to Thomas Jefferson’s shelves.

History books sometimes make the early republic feel dignified. It wasn’t. Americans argued then with about the same level of civility we manage today. One anonymous letter sent to Jefferson captured the mood perfectly.

“I think you ought to get a damn kicking, you red-headed son of a bitch. You are a pretty fellow to be President of the United States of America, you dirty scoundrel.”

In other words...

Jefferson was getting flamed more than two centuries before anyone invented social media. Politics has changed less than we’d like to admit.

I also love that many historians thought he was red headed, but this letter is what helped confirm that.

Yet Jefferson never entirely lost faith that people could persuade one another.

He disliked public confrontation but loved long dinners. John Meacham notes that Jefferson believed conversation over good food and wine could accomplish things speeches never could. Politics, in Jefferson’s view, worked best when people spent less time shouting across rooms and more time sharing tables.

I’m not sure he’s wrong.

Near the end of his presidency, Jefferson looked over a nation that had doubled in size, survived fierce political divisions, and begun looking confidently toward the continent beyond the Mississippi.

He had spent his entire life imagining an America that stretched farther than the one he inherited. Remarkably, America was beginning to catch up with his imagination.

There is no honest way to tell Thomas Jefferson’s story without arriving here.

In many ways, Jefferson imagined a better America before anyone else did. He envisioned a nation stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific. He believed ordinary citizens should be educated because republics depended on informed voters. He championed religious liberty, freedom of conscience, and the idea that governments existed to protect rights rather than grant them.

Then you arrive at slavery.

And the man who saw so far into America’s future suddenly seems unable, or unwilling, to see the injustice standing in front of him.

That contradiction has followed Jefferson ever since.

Jefferson wrote one of the most celebrated sentences in human history.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...”

He also enslaved more than six hundred people over the course of his lifetime.

Those two facts are not compatible.

They never have been.

Jefferson himself understood that slavery was morally corrosive. He called it a “moral depravity” and feared that God could not remain just forever while such an institution existed. He predicted slavery would eventually destroy the nation if it remained unresolved.

And then... he never found the courage to free the people he held in bondage. History rarely presents us with contradictions this stark. Modern scholarship has also settled another question that Americans debated for generations.

Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings. That fact is no longer seriously disputed by most historians. There is another detail that should never be overlooked. Sally Hemings was Martha Jefferson’s half-sister.

The same father. Different mothers.

Martha was born free because her mother was white. Sally was born enslaved because her mother was enslaved.

The relationship existed within a system where one person possessed freedom and legal power while the other did not. Whatever affection may have existed, and historians continue to debate parts of that relationship, it cannot be separated from the enormous imbalance of power that slavery created. Annette Gordon-Reed’s work has done more than anyone’s to restore Sally Hemings and the Hemings family to their rightful place in Jefferson’s story rather than treating them as a footnote.

Jefferson’s achievements deserve to be remembered.

So do his failures.

History is big enough for both.

One of the great ironies of Jefferson’s life is that he believed slavery would gradually fade away. Instead, it expanded.

When Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, Jefferson admired the invention. Like many Americans, he underestimated what it would do. Cotton production exploded. Slavery became even more profitable. The institution Jefferson hoped would slowly disappear instead dug itself deeper into the nation’s foundations. Even visionaries sometimes fail to see the future.

What has always fascinated me, though, is what happened after Jefferson was gone.

The people who fought slavery didn’t throw away the Declaration of Independence because Jefferson owned slaves. They quoted it.

Frederick Douglass, Abe Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. all quoted it. Again and again, reformers reached back to Jefferson’s own words and held America accountable to them. In a strange way, Jefferson’s greatest contribution became an argument against some of Jefferson’s own actions. History is full of ironies. That may be the greatest one.

Jefferson spent his retirement at Monticello doing what he had always done best.

Learning. He corresponded with scientists, architects, inventors, and old political rivals. He founded the University of Virginia because he believed education might become the republic’s greatest defense against tyranny. Remarkably, when he wrote his own epitaph, he didn’t mention serving as President of the United States.

He chose only three accomplishments.

Author of the Declaration of Independence.

Author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.

Father of the University of Virginia.

Not the presidency, but Ideas. Jefferson believed ideas lasted longer than offices.

Perhaps the most beautiful chapter of his final years involved John Adams.

The two men had once been inseparable. Then they became bitter political enemies. For years they barely spoke. Finally, thanks largely to Benjamin Rush, they began writing to one another again. Those letters became one of the greatest correspondences in American history. Two aging revolutionaries reflected on politics, philosophy, religion, old friends, and the astonishing nation they had helped create.

Time had done what politics never could. It reminded them that they had always been on the same side of history.

Then came July 4, 1826. Exactly fifty years after the Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson lay dying at Monticello.

A few hundred miles away, the eighty-nine-year-old John Adams was dying as well.

Jefferson died first.

Hours later, Adams reportedly whispered his final words:

“Thomas Jefferson survives.”

He did not know that Jefferson had already gone. I’ve always thought that’s one of history’s perfect endings. The author of the Declaration and its fiercest defender left the stage on the nation’s fiftieth birthday, each forever linked to the other.

I’ve struggled more with Thomas Jefferson than almost anyone else on this list.

It would be easy to write only about Monticello, the Declaration, the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, the Library of Congress, and the University of Virginia.

It would also be easy to write only about slavery and Sally Hemings.

Neither would tell the truth. The truth is more complicated. Thomas Jefferson asked America to aspire to a standard that he himself never fully reached. That should not be ignored. Neither should the standard.

Because if influence is measured by how long an idea continues to shape the people who inherit it, then Jefferson’s greatest creation wasn’t Monticello. It wasn’t the Louisiana Purchase or even the presidency.

It was a sentence written by a thirty-three-year-old lawyer in Philadelphia that generations of Americans have spent the next two hundred and fifty years trying to make true.

Jefferson spent his life imagining a better America.

His greatest triumph is that America is still trying to catch up.

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a long time.

Long before Broadway made Alexander Hamilton cool, I was already the strange guy trying to convince friends that he might have been the most fascinating of the Founding Fathers. My wife and I even talked about naming our son Hamilton back in 2008. She wisely pointed out that asking a kindergartner to survive life as Hamilton Ketcham might be a bit much, and cooler heads prevailed.

I’ve never stopped rooting for Hamilton. Never.

Not because I always agreed with him. I certainly don’t. In fact, no Founder probably inspires stronger disagreements than Hamilton. Thomas Jefferson looked at America and saw fields. Hamilton looked at America and saw factories. Jefferson trusted ordinary people. Hamilton trusted institutions. Jefferson believed liberty was safest when government stayed small. Hamilton believed liberty would never survive unless government was strong enough to hold the country together.

You can disagree with almost every one of Hamilton’s conclusions. It’s much harder not to admire the force of the man who reached them.

One thing the Broadway musical gets exactly right comes before Hamilton ever becomes a statesman.

In musical theater, writers often introduce the main character with what’s called an “I Want” song. It usually appears early in the first act, and its purpose is simple: tell the audience what the hero wants more than anything else. It’s the song that launches the journey. The song that makes you root for the character before you know how the story ends.

Hamilton’s “I Want” song is My Shot.

I’d argue it’s one of the greatest “I Want” songs ever written.

Most people hear it as a song about opportunity. I’ve always heard it as a song about hunger.

Lin-Manuel Miranda understood something fundamental about Alexander Hamilton. He recognized that Hamilton wasn’t simply determined not to throw away his shot.

If there’s one place I think the musical undersells him, it’s this: the real Alexander Hamilton wanted even more than the character on stage. He wanted education because it was his escape. He wanted Washington’s respect. He wanted battlefield glory. He wanted to build institutions that would outlive him. He wanted to shape the future of a country that wasn’t even his by birth.

He didn’t simply want success. He wanted significance.

Hamilton wasn’t simply determined not to throw away the opportunities that came his way. He was constantly creating new ones.

And once you start looking at Hamilton’s life through that lens, everything else suddenly makes sense.

No other Founder began with less.

George Washington inherited land.

Thomas Jefferson inherited Monticello.

James Madison inherited wealth and education.

Hamilton inherited uncertainty.

He was born on the Caribbean island of Nevis, to unmarried parents. His father eventually disappeared. His mother died while Hamilton was still a boy. Shortly afterward, the cousin who briefly took him in also died. Before most children today have finished middle school, Alexander Hamilton had already learned that life could pull the floor out from underneath you without warning.

If America is the land of reinvention, Hamilton may have been its first great example.

He found work as a teenage clerk for a trading company on St. Croix, and it’s difficult to overstate how extraordinary that was. Most boys his age were sweeping floors or loading cargo. Hamilton was managing inventories, tracking international shipments, extending credit, balancing accounts, negotiating with merchants, and sometimes running the business when the owners were away.

In other words, before he was old enough to vote, Hamilton already understood global commerce better than many men twice his age. Years later, when he designed America’s financial system, he wasn’t working from theory alone. He’d already lived inside the machinery of international trade.

Then came the hurricane.

In 1772, one of the most violent storms ever recorded tore across St. Croix. Hamilton sat down afterward and wrote a remarkable account of what he had witnessed. It wasn’t simply a weather report. It was vivid, emotional, almost biblical in its imagery. Local residents read the essay in the newspaper and couldn’t believe someone so young had written it. They took up a collection.

Not for storm victims but for young Alexander Hamilton. They raised enough money to send him to North America for an education. I’ve always loved that story.

Hamilton’s life changed because of an essay.

As someone who has now spent months writing about America’s most influential people, I find something wonderfully hopeful in that. Sometimes words really do change lives.

When Hamilton arrived in New York, America became his chosen country.

One detail from Ron Chernow’s biography has always stuck with me. Hamilton had grown up in the Caribbean. He had never experienced a true northern autumn before. Imagine seeing trees explode into brilliant reds and oranges for the very first time. We who have lived our whole lives here take seasons for granted. Hamilton didn’t. America itself must have felt like discovery.

He threw himself into King’s College, today’s Columbia University, with the same intensity he would later bring to almost everything else. Then the Revolution interrupted.

Hamilton never looked back.

At first, he became known less for his sword than for his pen.

His pamphlets defending the patriot cause displayed such remarkable command of history and political philosophy that many readers assumed they had been written by an experienced lawyer rather than a teenager. Hamilton seemed to possess an almost supernatural ability to absorb information, organize it, and then explain it with breathtaking clarity.

Writing opened doors for him once before and it was about to do so again. Guess who noticed this time? George Washington.

Washington needed talented officers. More importantly, he needed people he could trust.

Hamilton quickly became one of his aides-de-camp, drafting letters, organizing troop movements, handling delicate correspondence, and serving as Washington’s right hand during some of the darkest years of the Revolution. It wasn’t glamorous work. In fact, Hamilton grew increasingly frustrated that everyone viewed him as a brilliant secretary rather than a soldier.

He wanted command, battlefield glory and he wanted the chance to prove himself where bullets, not words, decided reputations.

Hamilton wasn’t shy about asking for it, either. That was another remarkable thing about him. When he wanted something, he almost always told you.

Eventually, his persistence paid off.

During the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, Washington finally gave Hamilton the opportunity he had craved for years. Leading American troops against Redoubt No. 10, Hamilton ordered his men to unload their muskets before charging with bayonets, minimizing the risk that eager soldiers would stop to fire instead of advancing. The assault succeeded with astonishing speed. In a matter of minutes, Hamilton had earned the battlefield reputation he believed had long been denied him.

He had finally gotten his shot.

Of course, for Alexander Hamilton, one achievement was never enough.

The war was ending. The real work, the work that would change America forever, was only beginning.

When the Revolution ended, America had won its independence. Whether it could keep it was another question entirely.

Ah, winning was easy, young man. Governing's harder.

The new nation was broke. States argued over money almost as often as they argued over politics. The Continental Congress had borrowed heavily during the war but lacked the authority to pay many of its debts. Foreign governments weren’t convinced the United States would survive long enough to honor its promises. The country had freedom.

It didn’t yet have credit.

Hamilton understood that this was more dangerous than many Americans realized. Countries don’t run on good intentions. They run on confidence. The twenty-dollar bill in your wallet isn’t valuable because the paper or the ink is worth twenty dollars. It’s valuable because all of us believe the United States will stand behind the promise printed on it. Hamilton understood that long before modern economists had names for it. A nation’s credit, its reputation for keeping its word, was one of its greatest assets. Lose that, and everything else begins to wobble.

Hamilton saw that before almost anyone else.

The Constitution gave him the opportunity he had been waiting for.

When George Washington became America’s first president, choosing a Secretary of the Treasury may not have seemed like the most glamorous appointment. There was no Treasury Department to speak of, no established financial system, and very little money to manage.

Hamilton looked at that empty canvas the way Michelangelo must have looked at a block of marble. He didn’t see what was there, he just saw what could be.

It’s difficult to overstate how productive Hamilton was. Sometimes we remember him for one duel or sometimes for one Broadway musical. He deserves to be remembered for his paperwork. That sounds absurd until you realize what those papers accomplished.

In a series of reports to Congress, Hamilton proposed that the federal government assume the Revolutionary War debts of the states, establish the nation’s credit, create a national bank, encourage manufacturing, stabilize the currency, improve tax collection, and convince both Americans and European investors that the United States intended to pay every dollar it owed. It wasn’t simply bookkeeping. It was nation-building.

I’ve always thought Rockefeller understood systems. Hamilton invented one.

He recognized that debt itself wasn’t the enemy. Properly managed, debt could become the foundation of national strength because creditors suddenly had a reason to believe in America’s future. If investors trusted the United States, they would lend to it. If they lent to it, businesses would grow. If businesses grew, the country would prosper.

Today that seems almost obvious. In 1790, It was revolutionary.

His opponents thought he was giving too much power to the federal government.

Jefferson worried that Hamilton admired the British financial system a little too much. Madison feared ordinary farmers would eventually lose influence to bankers and merchants. Their disagreements became some of the greatest political debates in American history.

The remarkable thing is that both sides were asking important questions. Jefferson was right to worry about concentrated power and Hamilton was right to worry about national weakness. America has spent more than two centuries trying to balance those competing instincts.

Their philosophical disagreements occasionally collided with practical reality.

Jefferson believed the Constitution should be read strictly. If the document didn’t specifically grant the federal government a power, then, in Jefferson’s view, Washington probably shouldn’t exercise it.

Hamilton saw the Constitution differently.

He believed it wasn’t an instruction manual listing every permissible action. It was a framework. If the Constitution didn’t prohibit something, and if it helped carry out the government’s legitimate responsibilities, then the government should have the flexibility to act.

That disagreement wasn’t just theoretical. It shaped the young republic.

Hamilton argued there was constitutional authority to create a national bank, even though the Constitution never explicitly mentions one. Jefferson insisted there wasn’t. “It doesn’t say you can,” was essentially his argument. Hamilton’s reply was just as simple: “It doesn’t say you can’t.”

Then history handed Jefferson a test.

In 1803, Napoleon unexpectedly offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory. Overnight, Jefferson found himself staring at perhaps the greatest land deal in history.

There was just one problem. The Constitution never specifically says the President can buy half a continent.

Jefferson knew it. He even considered asking for a constitutional amendment before concluding that Napoleon might not wait for America to settle its constitutional debate. So Jefferson did exactly what Hamilton had argued a flexible Constitution sometimes required.

He acted. Then came the delicious irony.

Jefferson used Hamilton’s financial system, and Hamilton’s national bank, to help finance the Louisiana Purchase. The very institution he had argued was unconstitutional became one of the tools that made doubling the size of the United States possible.

Man, can you see that grin on Hamilton’s face? I can.

Hamilton was still alive, he died in July 1804, but he actually surprised many Federalists by supporting the Louisiana Purchase. He thought it was an extraordinary strategic opportunity, even if it strengthened Jefferson politically.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate while writing this series is that governing has a way of humbling even the strongest philosophies. History doesn’t always wait while politicians settle theoretical arguments.

Hamilton rarely waited for anything. When he believed something needed doing, he simply started doing it. Need a national mint?

Build one.

Need customs officials to collect tariffs? Create the Customs Service.

Need ships to stop smugglers from avoiding those tariffs?

Hamilton established the Revenue Cutter Service, the direct ancestor of today’s United States Coast Guard. Millions of Americans know the Coast Guard’s motto, Semper Paratus, Always Ready.

Very few know they owe its existence to Alexander Hamilton.

The New York Post has changed ownership, politics, headlines, and fonts over the centuries. It still traces its beginning to Hamilton’s restless mind.

One of my favorite Hamilton stories doesn’t involve politics at all.

It involves paint.

By the time Hamilton built The Grange, his country home overlooking upper Manhattan, he had finally achieved the success he had spent his entire life chasing. Visitors entering the house were greeted by what appeared to be an elegant marble floor in the foyer.

It wasn’t marble.

It was a stretched canvas, painstakingly painted in oils to imitate marble at a fraction of the cost. I love that detail.

Hamilton appreciated beauty, but he also appreciated a good balance sheet.

Just off that foyer sat his study, painted a deep, rich green. Today it seems like an ordinary design choice, but around 1800, green was one of the most expensive paint colors available. The pigments relied on copper, making them far costlier than the whites and lighter shades found in most American homes.

That room wasn’t an accident. Hamilton understood that people notice details. Visitors stepping into his study saw a successful statesman, a respected lawyer, and a man who belonged among New York’s elite.

There is something wonderfully Hamilton about that.

The orphan from the Caribbean who had spent his youth wondering whether he would ever belong never completely stopped trying to prove that he did.

For all his confidence, Hamilton carried insecurities that never fully disappeared.

One letter reveals him wondering why he wasn’t more handsome. Friends remembered his relentless energy, but they also noticed how deeply criticism could wound him. He had climbed farther than perhaps any American of his generation, yet part of him never escaped the orphan who had arrived in New York determined to prove he deserved a place at the table.

Perhaps that’s why he wrote so much.

Ron Chernow estimates Hamilton produced enough letters, reports, essays, legal briefs, pamphlets, and public papers to fill dozens of volumes. He wrote fifty-one of the eighty-five Federalist Papers, often at astonishing speed, making the case for ratifying the Constitution with arguments so persuasive that they remain required reading in law schools more than two centuries later.

Hamilton never seemed afraid that he might run out of ideas.

Only that he might run out of time.

There is another story I can’t leave out.

When British Major John André was captured after conspiring with Benedict Arnold, Hamilton was among the American officers who came to know him before his execution. André impressed nearly everyone who met him. Hamilton later wrote with genuine sadness about the young British officer’s courage and dignity, recognizing greatness even in an enemy.

I love that story because it reminds us that Hamilton’s fierce patriotism never prevented him from recognizing character wherever he found it.

He argued passionately and he usually fought relentlessly, but he could still admire an honorable opponent.

America could use a little more of that today.

By the mid-1790s, Alexander Hamilton had accomplished more than most people accomplish in three lifetimes. Remarkably, he was still only getting started.

For all of Alexander Hamilton’s brilliance, there was one battle he never quite figured out how to win. The one inside himself.

His greatest strength and his greatest weakness came from the same place. The relentless drive that allowed him to build a financial system from scratch also made it nearly impossible for him to leave an argument unfinished, an insult unanswered, or an opportunity unexplored. Hamilton lived as though every day might be his last chance to matter.

In the end, he was right.

The episode that best illustrates Hamilton’s complicated nature wasn’t financial or military. It was deeply personal.

In 1797, journalist James Callender accused Hamilton of financial corruption while serving as Treasury Secretary. Today, most politicians would issue a carefully worded statement, deny everything, and let their attorneys take over.

Hamilton chose another path. He published nearly one hundred pages explaining, in exhaustive detail, that he was not guilty of financial corruption.

He was guilty of adultery.

The document became known as the Reynolds Pamphlet, and it remains one of the most astonishing acts of political self-destruction in American history. Hamilton believed his honor mattered more than his reputation. He would rather confess to betraying his wife than allow Americans to believe he had betrayed the public trust.

It’s difficult to imagine anyone making that calculation today. Whether it was noble, foolish, or both, it was unmistakably Hamilton.

That decision devastated Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton.

Eliza had married the brilliant young immigrant when few members of New York’s elite thought he belonged in their world. She believed in him before most of America did, stood beside him through war, politics, and endless controversy, and together they built a family that became the center of Hamilton’s life.

Their marriage survived the scandal, but it would soon face something far worse.

In 1801, Hamilton’s oldest son, Philip, accepted a duel after defending his father’s honor. Like so many young men of that era, he believed reputation demanded it.

The duel ended almost immediately. Philip was mortally wounded. He died the following day at just nineteen years old. The grief nearly destroyed Hamilton.

Friends noticed a different man afterward. The boundless energy remained, but there was a sadness beneath it that had not been there before. History has a cruel sense of irony. Three years later, Hamilton would walk toward the very same dueling ground at Weehawken, New Jersey.

Carrying the very same pistols.

His opponent was Aaron Burr.

By then, the two men had spent years circling one another. Burr was every bit as ambitious as Hamilton, but where Hamilton seemed incapable of hiding what he thought, Burr revealed almost nothing. They had opposed each other politically, personally, and professionally until the rivalry became one of the most famous in American history.

The duel has been romanticized, dramatized, and turned into Broadway theater, but stripped of all that, it was simply tragic.

Two extraordinarily gifted Americans reached the point where neither could imagine another way forward. Hamilton had written that he intended to reserve his fire. Whether he intentionally fired into the air or simply missed will always be debated. Burr did not miss. Hamilton fell and died the next afternoon.

He was forty-nine years old.

Whenever I think about Alexander Hamilton, I find myself playing one of history’s great “what if” games. What if he had lived another twenty years? What else would he have built?

Because that’s what Hamilton did.

He built.

He built a Treasury Department. He built America’s credit. He built confidence in its currency. He built a banking system. He built the Revenue Cutter Service that eventually became today’s Coast Guard. He helped establish the United States Mint. He founded what became the New York Post. He wrote more than half of The Federalist Papers, helping persuade Americans to ratify the Constitution.

He seemed almost incapable of seeing a problem without immediately asking how to solve it.

Washington once gave America a government. Hamilton spent the rest of his life trying to make sure it could pay its bills. That sounds far less glamorous than winning a revolution, but I’d argue it was just as important.

I’ve always thought Hamilton understood something that every successful nation eventually discovers.

Ideas matter. Principles matter. Liberty matters. But eventually someone has to balance the books. Someone has to convince the world your promises are worth believing.

Hamilton understood that confidence itself becomes a national resource. A country whose word means something is capable of extraordinary things. A country whose word means nothing struggles to accomplish anything at all. That lesson feels just as relevant today as it did in 1790.

One of Hamilton’s lesser-known observations has become one of my favorite quotes.

“Opinion is the governing principle of human affairs.”

He understood long before modern polling, cable news, or social media that perception shapes reality. Governments function because people believe they will function. Money has value because people believe it has value. Markets rise and fall because confidence rises and falls.

Hamilton didn’t simply create financial institutions. He understood the psychology behind them.

For decades after his death, Hamilton slowly faded into the background of American history. Hamilton never had the chance to grow old, but Eliza did.

She spent the next half century raising their children, preserving Alexander’s papers, defending his reputation, and helping establish New York’s first private orphanage. Much of what we know about Alexander Hamilton today exists because Eliza quietly devoted the rest of her life to making sure history wouldn’t forget him.

O, and THIS story from Ron Chernow I have always LOVED.

Late in life, after James Monroe had finished serving as president, he came to pay Eliza a visit. Monroe apparently hoped that age had softened old political wounds. Time had passed. They were both nearing the ends of their lives. Surely, he suggested, bygones could be bygones.

Eliza wasn’t interested.

She entered the parlor where Monroe was waiting. He politely stood. She very deliberately did not invite him to sit back down. Monroe spoke of the years that had passed and how old quarrels should be forgiven. Eliza looked him in the eye and replied, “Mr. Monroe, if you have come to tell me that you repent, that you are sorry, very sorry, for the misrepresentations and the slanders and the stories you circulated against my dear husband, if you have come to say this, I understand it. But otherwise, no lapse of time, no nearness to the grave, makes any difference.” Monroe quietly picked up his hat and left.

I have to admit, part of me cheers for Eliza there. History often tells us to forgive, but Eliza simply asked for something to forgive first.

Washington became the Father of His Country. Jefferson wrote the Declaration. Lincoln saved the Union.

Hamilton became the man on the ten-dollar bill.

Then, improbably, a Broadway musical reminded millions of Americans what earlier generations already knew.

Before there was Wall Street, before there was the Treasury Department, before the United States became the world’s largest economy, there was an immigrant orphan from the Caribbean who refused to believe that America should think small.

The musical deserves enormous credit for introducing Hamilton to a new generation.

But the real man was, in some ways, even more remarkable. He wanted more than applause. He wanted permanence.

I’ve wondered over the years why Hamilton has fascinated me for so long.

Maybe it’s because he represents something uniquely American. He wasn’t born into privilege. He wasn’t handed opportunity. He wasn’t even born an American.

He chose America. Then he spent the rest of his life trying to build the kind of country he believed it could become. Sometimes that relentless drive got him into trouble. Sometimes it exhausted his friends and made enemies he didn’t need to make, and ultimately, well, it got him killed.

But he also left behind institutions that still shape the lives of every American.

He arrived in America with almost nothing except talent, determination, and an impossible amount of want.

More than two centuries later, we’re still living in the country he refused to stop imagining.

There are presidents.

And then there is Theodore Roosevelt.

Most presidents eventually become statues. Theodore Roosevelt seemed to spend his entire life trying to outrun becoming one.

He boxed in the White House until he permanently damaged the sight in one eye. He chased horse thieves across the Dakota Badlands. He hunted grizzly bears, climbed mountains, explored jungles, read books at a pace that seemed almost physically impossible, and once delivered a ninety-minute speech after being shot in the chest because, as he famously explained, “It takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

He kept a horse at the White House. He occasionally went skinny-dipping in the Potomac with ambassadors and cabinet members. He inspired one of the most beloved toys in American history. He nearly died exploring an unmapped river in the Amazon.

If Theodore Roosevelt had merely been an adventurer, we’d still be talking about him.

If he had merely been president, we’d still be talking about him.

Somehow, he was both.

But before Theodore Roosevelt became the embodiment of American energy, he was a little boy who couldn’t breathe.

When Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858, nobody would have predicted greatness.

He was painfully sickly. Asthma attacks left him gasping through the night. His eyesight was poor. His body was weak. There were evenings when his parents feared he might not survive until morning. In an era before modern medicine, there wasn’t much anyone could do except hold him upright near an open window and hope fresh air might help.

It’s strange to imagine America’s most vigorous president beginning life that way.

Then his father changed everything.

Theodore Roosevelt adored his father. Years later, after meeting kings, generals, presidents, cowboys, and explorers, he still wrote simply,

“My father was the best man I ever knew.”

One day his father looked at his undersized, brilliant son and told him something that became the defining challenge of his life.

“You have the mind,” he said, “but you have not the body.”

Then came the sentence that changed American history.

“You must make your body.”

Most people spend their lives accepting the hand they’ve been dealt. Theodore Roosevelt treated his as an assignment.

He built a gymnasium in the family home and attacked exercise with the same enthusiasm he would later bring to politics, ranching, hunting, writing, and war. He lifted weights. Boxed. Wrestled. Hiked. Rowed. Climbed. If his lungs betrayed him, he simply worked harder. It never became easy. He simply became tougher.

That theme would follow him for the rest of his life. Roosevelt never believed obstacles disappeared. He believed character was built by charging directly through them.

His autobiography is full of that spirit. Again and again, he returns to the idea that courage isn’t the absence of hardship but the willingness to face it anyway.

“Far and away the best prize that life offers,” he wrote, “is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

Nobody worked harder.

He was also, thankfully, a wonderfully odd child.

He collected animals with the enthusiasm other boys collected baseball cards. Birds, mice, turtles, snakes, if it crawled, flew, or scurried, Theodore probably wanted to study it. He carefully preserved specimens, filled notebooks with observations, and created what he proudly called the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History.”

His love of wildlife never really faded. It simply grew up with him. That childhood fascination would eventually help preserve more wilderness than any president in American history.

The Roosevelt household itself sounds like something from a Mark Twain story.

Theodore loved telling stories about his family, including one about his grandfather, who, as a boy, supposedly rode an angry pig straight through a church congregation after Sunday services. Roosevelt delighted in the absurdity of it, and you begin to understand where his own playful streak came from.

Humor stayed with him his entire life. So did boundless energy.

Friends often joked they couldn’t keep up with him. He read a book before breakfast, spent the afternoon on horseback, attended political meetings into the evening, then stayed awake writing long into the night.

H. W. Brands (whose book T.R.: The Last Romantic I highly recommend) describes Roosevelt as if he possessed an internal motor that simply refused to shut off. Even in old age, after illness, injuries, and years of public service, he slept only a few hours each night because he simply couldn’t stop living.

His personal life seemed just as blessed.

In 1880 he married Alice Hathaway Lee, the woman he adored almost beyond words. Friends thought Theodore Roosevelt had finally found something capable of slowing him down. They built a home together. He entered politics. A daughter was born.

Then came February 14, 1884.

Valentine’s Day.

It remains one of the most heartbreaking days in American political history. That morning, Theodore’s young wife died from complications following childbirth. Hours later, in the same house, his beloved mother died of typhoid fever.

Two women is the same day and it shattered the young husband.

Roosevelt opened his diary and wrote only a single black X across the page. Beneath it, seven words.

“The light has gone out of my life.”

There are moments that divide a life into before and after. This was Theodore Roosevelt’s.

He could have disappeared. Most people would have. Instead, he did something that almost seems impossible. He walked away from everything.

Leaving his infant daughter in the care of family, Roosevelt headed west to the Dakota Territory, determined to lose himself on the frontier. Some biographers have called it escape. Others call it healing.

I think it was both.

Because somewhere on the frozen plains of North Dakota, surrounded by cowboys, cattle, blizzards, and endless miles of open country, Theodore Roosevelt reinvented himself for the second time. The sickly boy had built his body. Now the grieving widower would build the man America would one day call Teddy Roosevelt.

The Dakota Territory didn’t just heal Theodore Roosevelt. It revealed him.

He arrived in the Badlands as a grieving New York politician wearing spectacles and tailored clothes. The locals weren’t quite sure what to make of him. One cowboy later joked that Roosevelt looked like someone who ought to be asking for directions to the nearest library rather than investing in a cattle ranch.

Then they watched him work.

He rode as hard as anyone. He accepted the same miserable weather, the same long days in the saddle, and the same dangers everyone else faced. He wasn’t pretending to be a cowboy. He was trying to become one.

One of my favorite Roosevelt stories happened there.

Three thieves stole one of his boats from his ranch, intending to drift down the icy Little Missouri River. Most people would have reported the theft and moved on.

Not Theodore Roosevelt. Nope.

He quickly built another boat, recruited two ranch hands, packed flour, bacon, coffee, and, because he was Theodore Roosevelt, a copy of Tolstoy, then spent days chasing the thieves through freezing weather. When they finally caught them, Roosevelt stood guard through the nights, reading Anna Karenina while his prisoners slept nearby. It is difficult to imagine another future president spending his evenings protecting captured criminals with one hand while turning the pages of Russian literature with the other.

That’s Theodore Roosevelt in a single story. Adventure, books, duty, and a touch of delightful absurdity.

O, did I mention Roosevelt sometimes read books while riding a horse

Riding.

Imagine trying that today.

That’s such a wonderfully Roosevelt image.

The West also gave Roosevelt something he would carry back east forever. A love of wild places.

He hunted constantly, and modern readers sometimes struggle with that fact. Roosevelt never apologized for being a hunter. But he also believed deeply in what he called “fair chase.” Hunting wasn’t about slaughter. It was about respecting the animal, respecting the land, and understanding that if Americans wanted wildlife to survive, someone had to protect the places where wildlife lived.

That conviction would eventually change the map of the United States. Stay tuned. We’ll circle back to that.

Roosevelt returned east tougher, wiser, and somehow even more energetic than before.

He remarried, this time to Edith Carow, a childhood friend who would become one of the great First Ladies in American history. Together they built a family that seemed to operate somewhere between a household and a three-ring circus.

The Roosevelt children raced through the White House, played practical jokes, wrestled on the furniture, and filled the executive mansion with enough noise to make previous presidents wonder if they had accidentally moved into a playground.

Roosevelt also decorated the White House the way only Theodore Roosevelt would. Mounted bison heads, elk antlers, animal trophies, and pieces collected from his western adventures found their way into the Executive Mansion. To some visitors it probably looked unusual. To Roosevelt, it simply reflected the America he loved: wild, rugged, and worth preserving.

Then there were the animals. I have read about these in multiple sources and Teddy’s autobiography, and it sounds like a zoo.

Dogs.

Cats.

Ponies.

Guinea pigs.

Snakes.

A badger.

A one-legged rooster. (huh)

A hyena.

A bear.

One pony, Algonquin, became something of a White House celebrity after the Roosevelt children rode him into the elevator and took him upstairs to visit young Archie while he recovered from illness. Depending on which version of the story you believe, getting the pony back downstairs proved considerably more complicated than getting him up.

It remains one of the few logistical challenges the Secret Service probably never practiced for.

If the White House sometimes felt like organized chaos, Alice Roosevelt often served as its ringleader. Theodore's oldest daughter was brilliant, funny, fearless, and every bit as impossible to contain as her father. She smoked in public, drove far too fast, climbed onto rooftops, and scandalized Washington society with a grin on her face. She later became famous for a line often attributed to a pillow in her home: "If you can't say something good about somebody, come sit next to me."

You can spend a lifetime studying Theodore Roosevelt before realizing his greatest challenge may have been raising someone even more unforgettable than himself.

Roosevelt loved the chaos. He believed children should climb trees, scrape knees, ask questions, and wear out their shoes. He treated the presidency with enormous seriousness, but he refused to believe childhood should ever become overly polished.

Neither, for that matter, should adulthood.

Roosevelt even turned family walks into adventures. In a game the children called “point-to-point,” he chose a distant landmark and insisted they reach it by the straightest possible route. Roads were optional. Fences, streams, hedges and mud were simply obstacles to be crossed. Most fathers took their children for a walk. Theodore Roosevelt led minor expeditions.

Roosevelt and members of his cabinet occasionally escaped for early-morning swims in the Potomac River, skinny-dipping together before beginning the day’s work. Foreign diplomats sometimes found themselves unexpectedly invited along, creating scenes that almost certainly never appeared in official diplomatic correspondence.

It was wonderfully, unapologetically Theodore Roosevelt.

By then, Roosevelt had earned another nickname.

Actually, several.

As a child his family called him “Teedie.” Newspaper reporters eventually christened him the “Cyclone Assemblyman” because he attacked corruption with relentless energy. During the Spanish-American War he became forever linked with the Rough Riders. Later he would be called the Trust Buster, the Bull Moose, Colonel Roosevelt, and, of course, Teddy, a nickname he personally disliked even as the rest of the country embraced it.

Like Babe Ruth, America seemed incapable of giving him just one name. Perhaps because one personality wasn’t quite enough to contain him.

His rise to the presidency happened almost by accident, or perhaps by political miscalculation.

By 1900, Roosevelt had become governor of New York, and Republican party bosses had reached an uncomfortable conclusion. He was becoming impossible to control.

Roosevelt had taken on powerful business interests, challenged corruption within his own party, and possessed an unnerving habit of believing exactly what he said in public. Men like Senator Thomas Platt decided the best way to neutralize Roosevelt was to make him vice president.

The office, one political insider famously observed, wasn’t worth “a pitcher of warm spit.” Surely, they thought, Roosevelt could do little damage there. It became one of the great backfires in American political history. Just six months after taking office, President William McKinley was assassinated.

At forty-two years old, Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest president America had ever had. The politicians who tried to sideline him had accidentally handed him the presidency.

Roosevelt attacked the office with the same energy he attacked everything else. Previous presidents often viewed themselves as caretakers. Roosevelt saw the presidency as a bully pulpit, a wonderful phrase he used not to mean bullying people, but a magnificent platform from which to persuade the nation.

He took on monopolies that had grown powerful enough to dominate entire industries. He pushed for safer food and drug laws. He helped negotiate peace between Russia and Japan, earning the Nobel Peace Prize, the first American ever to receive it.

But if there’s one part of his presidency that still shapes America every single day, it isn’t trust-busting. It’s what he refused to let disappear.

Long before conservation became fashionable, Roosevelt realized the country’s forests, rivers, mountains, and wildlife could not survive if every acre was treated simply as something to be sold.

Congress often resisted him. Western politicians accused him of locking away valuable land. Business leaders complained he was placing too much of America’s resources off limits.

Roosevelt’s response was wonderfully Theodore Roosevelt.

If Congress moved too slowly, he looked for another way.

The Antiquities Act of 1906 gave presidents the authority to protect places of historic or scientific importance as national monuments. Roosevelt read the law, smiled, and went to work. During the frantic closing days of congressional sessions, and on more than one occasion before opponents could organize to stop him, he signed proclamation after proclamation, setting aside millions of acres that he feared might otherwise be lost forever.

He didn’t just preserve famous places. He preserved places that would become famous because he saved them.

Devils Tower in Wyoming became America’s first national monument. Then came Montezuma Castle in Arizona, Petrified Forest, Chaco Canyon, Muir Woods just north of San Francisco, and even the Grand Canyon, which Roosevelt protected as a national monument years before Congress finally made it a national park.

“Leave it as it is,” Roosevelt would later say of the canyon. “You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it.”

By the time he left office, Roosevelt had established five national parks, eighteen national monuments, fifty-one bird sanctuaries, four national game preserves, and protected roughly 230 million acres of public land.

Two hundred thirty million acres.

That’s nearly the size of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, combined.

Every time Americans hike through Yosemite, stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon, watch elk in a national forest, or take their children camping beneath skies that still look much as they did centuries ago, they’re walking through Theodore Roosevelt’s greatest gift.

He hunted because he loved nature. He preserved nature because he understood hunting alone wasn’t enough. America would always need places that remained wild.

By 1908, Theodore Roosevelt was only fifty years old, remained the most popular political figure in the country, and probably could have won another term. There was only one obstacle.

Theodore Roosevelt had promised not to run.

Roosevelt made the announcement on election night in 1904, almost immediately after learning that he had won an overwhelming victory. Although he had served only three and a half years of McKinley’s term before winning one term of his own, Roosevelt said he considered those inherited years the equivalent of a first term. He believed George Washington’s two-term tradition concerned the substance of power, not the technical wording of the Constitution. He therefore declared:

“Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for or accept another nomination.”

Why announce it so soon? Partly principle. Roosevelt wanted to prove that his enormous victory had not made him hungry for permanent power, and he wanted to remove any suspicion that every decision of his second administration would be calculated toward reelection. There was also pure Roosevelt impulsiveness in it: once he decided something was right, he wanted to say it plainly and immediately. He apparently did not even warn Edith, who understood instantly that he had made himself a lame duck before his elected term had begun. Roosevelt later regretted the announcement and reportedly said he would have cut off his hand to take it back, but his reputation for keeping his word mattered too much for him to run in 1908.

So, Roosevelt shifted his thoughts to Africa.

Immediately after leaving the White House, he departed on a year-long Smithsonian-sponsored expedition that collected thousands of animal specimens for museums and scientists. Newspapers naturally focused on the lions and elephants. Roosevelt cared just as much about the insects, birds, and plants. Even on safari, he wasn’t simply hunting.

He was studying. He had spent his entire life believing that the best way to love nature was to understand it.

And somehow, after crossing Africa, giving speeches across Europe, meeting kings and emperors, and returning home to a hero’s welcome, Theodore Roosevelt decided he wasn’t quite finished with politics. Not even close.

The Republican Party, however, had changed while he was away.

Roosevelt had handpicked William Howard Taft to succeed him, believing his friend would continue the progressive reforms they had begun together. Instead, Roosevelt became convinced Taft was moving the party backward. The disagreement grew into one of the most dramatic political divorces in American history.

When Roosevelt failed to win the Republican nomination in 1912, most former presidents would have accepted defeat. Theodore Roosevelt started another party.

Of course he did.

Officially it was called the Progressive Party. Nobody remembers that but everyone remembers the nickname.

The Bull Moose Party.

Asked how he felt after surviving an exhausting campaign schedule, Roosevelt declared he was “as fit as a bull moose.”

America instantly had its new political symbol.

It fit perfectly. Bull moose aren’t graceful. They’re powerful. Stubborn. Impossible to ignore. So was Theodore Roosevelt.

For years, I had one question that no history teacher ever seemed interested in answering.

How, exactly, did Theodore Roosevelt ride a moose?

You’ve probably seen the picture. Roosevelt, looking perfectly comfortable, sits astride a giant bull moose splashing through a river. I stared at that photograph for years wondering if there was some forgotten chapter of presidential history where Teddy had somehow tamed North America’s largest deer.

Then one day I stumbled across the full image.

Roosevelt wasn’t alone.

William Howard Taft was riding an elephant. Woodrow Wilson was riding a donkey.

It turns out I had fallen for one of the earliest viral images in American politics. Around the 1912 election, artists created a remarkably convincing photo composite, carefully combining separate photographs to show the three candidates riding the symbols of their political parties. Primitive Photoshop, more than a century before Photoshop existed.

I’ll admit I was slightly disappointed.

Then again...

If there was one president I was willing to believe had actually ridden a moose across a river, it was Theodore Roosevelt.

The campaign soon produced one of the most astonishing moments in presidential history.

On October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was walking toward a campaign speech in Milwaukee when a would-be assassin shot him in the chest.

The bullet first passed through a folded fifty-page copy of his speech and then through a thick eyeglass case in his coat pocket. Together, they slowed it just enough to save his life.

Doctors urged him to go immediately to the hospital. Roosevelt coughed into his hand.

No blood. That meant, he concluded, the bullet had probably not pierced his lung. So he walked onto the stage anyway.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot.”

The crowd gasped.

Roosevelt smiled.

“But it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

Then he spoke.

For ninety minutes.

With a bullet still lodged inside his chest.

READ THAT AGAIN!

I’ll wait.

Ok, so the doctors later decided removing it would be more dangerous than leaving it there. Roosevelt carried that bullet for the rest of his life.

Only Theodore Roosevelt could turn an assassination attempt into a campaign story.

Not every Roosevelt story involves impossible toughness.

Some reveal something sweeter.

One November day in Mississippi, Roosevelt accepted an invitation to hunt black bear. After hours of searching, his guides cornered an exhausted old bear, tied it to a tree, and invited the president to shoot it.

Roosevelt refused. There was no honor in killing an animal that had no chance.

A political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman sketched the scene for The Washington Post. Before long, a Brooklyn shopkeeper named Morris Michtom placed a small stuffed bear in his store window and asked permission to call it “Teddy’s Bear.”

The toy became an overnight sensation. I’ve always loved the irony.

The toughest president America has ever produced became forever associated with one of childhood’s softest companions. Only Theodore Roosevelt could inspire both the Rough Riders and bedtime.

There was one final great adventure still waiting for him.

In 1913, Roosevelt traveled to South America to explore an unmapped tributary of the Amazon known simply as the River of Doubt.

Even by Roosevelt’s standards, it was an astonishingly dangerous undertaking.

The river was filled with deadly rapids. Food ran short. Insects swarmed constantly. Men became sick with malaria. Equipment disappeared into the current. One expedition member murdered another before fleeing into the jungle. Roosevelt himself gashed his leg on a rock, and the wound became badly infected.

His fever climbed. His strength disappeared. For perhaps the first time in his life, Theodore Roosevelt believed he was slowing everyone else down.

He suggested that the expedition leave him behind.

“I have lived my life,” he told his son Kermit. “It is better that one man should die than that we all should perish.”

Kermit refused.

There would be no leaving Theodore Roosevelt behind.

The expedition struggled onward together, eventually emerging battered but alive. Roosevelt never fully recovered. The malaria and infection permanently weakened his health. Even so, it’s hard not to smile at the name. The River of Doubt. There may never have been a man less suited to leave one unexplored.

Roosevelt died in his sleep on January 6, 1919, at just sixty years old.

Vice President Thomas Marshall reportedly remarked, “Death had to take him sleeping, for if Roosevelt had been awake, there would have been a fight.”

Whether Marshall actually said those exact words hardly matters.

It’s exactly what everyone believed.

When I started this series, I thought influence would mostly be measured by inventions, laws, and wars.

Roosevelt reminds me that influence can also be measured by example. He taught Americans that conservation wasn’t weakness.

That public service could be joyful and that reading books and climbing mountains belonged together.

That vigorous debate was healthier than quiet cynicism.

That children should play hard and that adults should keep exploring.

That life’s greatest risk wasn’t failure, it was refusing to attempt anything worthy of failure in the first place.

Roosevelt once gave a speech in Paris that contained what has become known as “The Man in the Arena.”

Those words have outlived nearly every political argument of his era because they weren’t really about politics. They were about life.

No American ever squeezed more living into a lifetime than Theodore Roosevelt.

He wasn’t remembered because he was fearless.

He felt fear, and knew grief more than most of us. He failed spectacularly and he lost elections. He buried people he loved while carrying physical pain for decades. He simply refused to let any of those things convince him to live a smaller life.

That’s why Theodore Roosevelt belongs in the top ten.

Not because he taught America how to win.

Because he taught America how to live.

And more than a century later, it’s still awfully hard to read about Theodore Roosevelt without feeling like you ought to close the book, go outside and do something that would make him smile.

Every game eventually reaches the same moment.

The crowd is roaring. One manager is screaming. The other manager is screaming louder. One side insists the runner was safe. The other demands he was out. Twenty thousand people are absolutely convinced they know the correct answer.

Then the umpire makes a call. Half the stadium boos, the other half the stadium cheers. The important part isn’t that everyone agrees.

The important part is that everyone agrees someone has the authority to decide.

Without that, baseball isn’t baseball. It’s just nine innings of arguments. America faced the same problem.

The Constitution was a remarkable document. It divided power. It protected liberty. It created Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court. But it never explicitly answered one enormous question.

Who gets the final word when everyone disagrees about what the Constitution actually means?

For the first decade after it was written, nobody really knew.

Then John Marshall climbed behind home plate.

John Marshall may be the most influential American that most Americans have never heard of.

George Washington won the Revolution and James Madison designed the Constitution. Marshall did something with less fanfare, but no less important.

He made the Constitution matter, not as a collection of inspiring words, but as law.

Every time a governor loses a Supreme Court case. Every time Congress passes a law that gets struck down. Every time a president discovers there are limits to presidential power. Every time Americans say, “This will probably wind up before the Supreme Court.”

They’re living in John Marshall’s America. Whether they know his name or not.

Like so many remarkable Americans, Marshall hardly looked the part.

He wasn’t especially handsome. Several contemporaries remarked that he looked more like an ordinary Virginia farmer than one of the nation’s great legal minds. He dressed simply, carried himself without ceremony, and seemed almost allergic to pretension. Had you passed him on the streets of Richmond carrying groceries home from the market, and he often did, you might never have guessed you had just walked by the Chief Justice of the United States.

That was exactly how Marshall preferred it. His greatness didn’t come from commanding attention. It came from earning trust.

He was born in rural Virginia in 1755, the oldest of fifteen children in a house that valued books almost as much as hard work. His father, Thomas Marshall, had little formal education but possessed a sharp mind and an enormous curiosity. He filled the family’s modest library with Shakespeare, Pope, Blackstone, history, philosophy, and the classics. John later credited his father with teaching him not simply what to think but how to think.

There would be another father figure before long.

George Washington.

Marshall admired Washington almost from the beginning of the Revolution. By the end of his life, that admiration had become something closer to devotion. Decades later he would spend years writing the first great biography of Washington because he believed no American had better understood the man who held the fragile republic together during its earliest years.

It’s difficult to understand John Marshall without understanding that Washington wasn’t merely his first president.

He was his model.

Marshall didn’t learn government in a classroom. He learned it at Valley Forge.

He enlisted in the Continental Army at twenty years old and endured one of the harshest winters in American history alongside thousands of hungry, cold, poorly supplied soldiers. Shoes fell apart. Blankets wore thin. Disease spread. The army survived not because conditions improved but because men like Washington somehow convinced exhausted soldiers that America was still worth believing in.

Marshall never forgot those months.

He saw first hand what happened when states refused to cooperate, when supplies failed to arrive, when Congress lacked the power to effectively support its own army. The Revolution taught him something that would shape every major opinion he ever wrote. A nation that cannot govern itself cannot remain a nation for very long.

After the war, Marshall studied law in what today would seem almost impossibly brief fashion. A few months of lectures at William and Mary under George Wythe, one of America’s finest legal minds, combined with an insatiable appetite for reading, proved enough. Marshall possessed one of those rare minds that seemed capable of seeing not merely the facts of a case but the structure underneath it.

Friends noticed something else. He loved people.

One of the greatest surprises in the biographies is just how much everyone seemed to enjoy being around him. Marshall laughed easily. He told stories constantly. Dinner parties often stretched late into the evening because nobody wanted him to stop talking.

Justice Joseph Story, who served beside him for years, perhaps captured him better than anyone.

“I love his laugh,” Story once wrote. “It is too hearty for an intriguer.”

What a remarkable compliment.

Not that he was brilliant or well educated, but that his laugh was too honest to belong to someone who played political games.

His rise to national prominence came during one of the stranger diplomatic episodes in American history.

In 1797 President John Adams sent Marshall to France as part of a commission attempting to avoid war. Instead of formal negotiations, French officials demanded enormous bribes before they would even begin talking. Marshall refused. The diplomats returned home and a scandal exploded.

Americans knew it simply as the XYZ Affair because the names of the French intermediaries had been replaced with the letters X, Y, and Z.

Marshall’s reputation soared. He had demonstrated exactly the sort of calm integrity Americans admired. He wasn’t loud. He wasn’t theatrical. He simply refused to compromise principles that weren’t his to compromise. Sometimes character becomes famous almost by accident.

Not long afterward, Adams asked Marshall to become Secretary of State.

He accepted. Then history took another unexpected turn.

The election of 1800 was one of the bitterest in American history. Adams lost to Thomas Jefferson. Before leaving office, Adams scrambled to fill as many federal judicial positions as possible with Federalists, hoping they might provide stability for the young republic regardless of who occupied the White House.

Among those appointments was one that barely caused a ripple at the time.

John Marshall became Chief Justice of the United States.

Looking back, it may be the single most important appointment any president ever made.

The Supreme Court Marshall inherited hardly resembled the institution Americans know today.

It met in cramped rooms. The justices were not particularly respected. Some had already resigned out of frustration. Congressmen attracted more attention. Presidents wielded more influence and state courts often mattered more to ordinary citizens than the nation’s highest court.

In baseball terms, the umpire had a rulebook but nobody was entirely convinced he had the authority to use it.

Marshall intended to change that. Not by demanding power but by slowly earning it and the opportunity arrived sooner than anyone expected.

It came wrapped in a lawsuit so seemingly ordinary that almost no one recognized they were about to witness one of the most important decisions in American history.

A case called Marbury v. Madison.

Marbury v. Madison is one of those Supreme Court cases that generations of students memorize and almost nobody understands. As an former 8th grade history teacher, take my word on that.

The thing is the names are forgettable, and the legal details can be exhausting. What I tried to explain is, yes, it may be boring, but how it changed America forever, is not!

Here’s the simplest version.

As John Adams prepared to leave office, his administration hurried to fill dozens of judicial appointments. William Marbury was supposed to receive one of those commissions. The paperwork had been signed. It had even been sealed.

It simply hadn’t been delivered before Thomas Jefferson took office.

Jefferson wasn’t interested in cleaning up Adams’ unfinished business. He instructed his new secretary of state, James Madison, not to deliver the commission.

Marbury sued.

On its surface, the dispute seemed almost petty. One man wanted his government job, but instead, it became the case that defined the Supreme Court.

Marshall faced an impossible problem.

If he ordered Jefferson to deliver the commission, the president could simply ignore him, making the Court look powerless. But if he ruled for Jefferson outright, the Court would appear weak and politically submissive. So, Marshall found a third option.

The sort of option only John Marshall seemed capable of finding.

He ruled that Marbury had indeed been wronged and he deserved the commission. He also was pretty firm that Jefferson had acted improperly. Then Marshall calmly explained that the law giving the Supreme Court the authority to order the commission delivered conflicted with the Constitution.

And when a law conflicts with the Constitution; the Constitution wins. Not Congress. Not the President.

The Constitution.

Therefore, the Court could not grant Marbury what he wanted. Jefferson won the immediate case. Marshall won something infinitely larger. For the first time, the Supreme Court declared an act of Congress unconstitutional.

Judicial review had arrived.

What’s remarkable is that Marshall managed to increase the Court’s power while simultaneously denying the very request before him. Jefferson celebrated because Marbury lost. Marshall smiled because the Supreme Court had just become a coequal branch of government. That’s not merely good law, that’s brilliant strategy.

Marshall understood something that every great referee eventually learns.

Authority isn’t something you demand, It’s something players gradually accept because your judgment earns their confidence. He spent the next thirty-four years earning that confidence. One decision at a time.

His next great opinion came in McCulloch v. Maryland.

And I can once again vouch that like Marbury, the legal dispute itself sounds almost boring to 8th graders.

Could Maryland tax the Bank of the United States?

Most students hear that question and immediately begin thinking about lunch. Marshall heard something much bigger. Could one state weaken the national government whenever it pleased? His answer became another cornerstone of American law.

“The power to tax,” Marshall wrote, “involves the power to destroy.”

If Maryland could tax the national bank out of existence, then every state could slowly dismantle the federal government piece by piece. The Constitution, Marshall reminded everyone, had created a nation, not merely a collection of neighboring states.

Then came perhaps my favorite sentence he ever wrote.

“We must never forget that it is a Constitution we are expounding.”

In other words, the Constitution wasn’t written like an instruction manual for assembling furniture. It wasn’t intended to anticipate every invention, every technology, every economic system, or every crisis America would ever face. It established principles sturdy enough to guide generations that its authors would never live to meet. That’s why those words still matter.

Then came steamboats.

I realize that sentence probably doesn’t sound especially dramatic.

Bear with me, please.

Before railroads connected America, rivers were highways. Steamboats carried people, freight, ideas, and commerce across the young nation. When New York granted one company an exclusive license to operate steamboats in its waters, another businessman challenged the monopoly.

The case became Gibbons v. Ogden.

Once again, Marshall saw past the boats because the real question wasn’t transportation, it was commerce. Could individual states carve America into fifty different economic kingdoms, each making its own rules?

Marshall said no.

The Commerce Clause gave Congress authority over interstate commerce because the Founders hadn’t fought a revolution merely to replace thirteen competing colonies with thirteen competing countries. That decision still shapes everything from trucking regulations to airline travel to internet commerce.

People who have never heard of Gibbons v. Ogden still live under it every day.

Marshall’s opinions kept building.

Dartmouth College v. Woodward strengthened contracts and reassured businesses that governments couldn’t simply rewrite agreements whenever politics changed. (Our old friend Daniel Webster shows up here too.)

Cohens v. Virginia confirmed that state courts could not have the final word on federal constitutional questions.

Individually, each case mattered. Together, they transformed the United States from a loose collection of states into a functioning nation governed by one Constitution. That’s Marshall’s true achievement. He didn’t simply decide cases. He stitched America together.

One of the smartest changes Marshall ever made had nothing to do with constitutional theory. It had to do with teamwork.

Before Marshall became Chief Justice, Supreme Court justices often behaved like professors writing separate essays. Each justice delivered his own opinion, even when they generally agreed. The result was a collection of individual voices rather than one institutional voice. Marshall hated that.

He believed the Court would command greater respect if it spoke together whenever possible.

So he persuaded his colleagues to issue a single majority opinion. Today we barely notice that practice. Because of John Marshall, it feels natural. Before John Marshall, it wasn’t.

Not everyone appreciated what he was building.

Certainly not Thomas Jefferson.

The two Virginians had once shared patriotic ideals, but they gradually became philosophical opposites. Jefferson feared centralized power. Marshall feared a nation too weak to govern itself.

Their disagreement wasn’t simply personal. It was philosophical.

Jefferson generally believed the Constitution should be read strictly, with the federal government exercising only those powers specifically granted to it. Marshall believed the Constitution had been written broadly enough to allow the nation to meet challenges its authors could never have anticipated.

The funny thing is that governing has a way of testing even our strongest principles.

In 1803, Jefferson eagerly purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, instantly doubling the size of the United States. It was one of the greatest bargains in American history.

There was just one problem. The Constitution never explicitly says the president can buy half a continent.

Jefferson privately admitted he wasn’t entirely sure the purchase was constitutional and even considered proposing an amendment before deciding the opportunity was simply too important to lose. Sometimes even the strongest advocate of a narrow reading of the Constitution discovers that history doesn’t always wait for perfect consistency.

Marshall understood that tension better than almost anyone. He believed the Constitution had been written not as a detailed instruction manual but as a framework sturdy enough to let future generations govern a changing nation.

Their disagreements became legendary.

Jefferson once joked that if Marshall asked him whether the sun was shining, he would hesitate to answer because Marshall possessed an almost supernatural ability to lead people, step by careful step, toward conclusions they had never intended to reach. It was Jefferson’s way of admitting that arguing with John Marshall often felt dangerous because Marshall’s logic was so relentlessly clear.

It’s one of the highest compliments an opponent can accidentally pay.

For all his legal brilliance, Marshall never behaved like someone who believed himself important.

Richmond neighbors regularly saw him walking through the marketplace carrying baskets of groceries under his own arm. Visitors who expected ceremony instead found a man eager to swap stories, laugh over dinner, and spend an evening playing quoits, the nineteenth-century cousin of horseshoes, with friends.

Justice Joseph Story treasured those evenings.

There was even a delightful tradition among the justices during their boardinghouse dinners. Wine was officially permitted only when it rained. Whenever the skies looked clear, Marshall would jokingly ask Story whether there was any rain.

“No,” Story would reply.

Marshall would grin.

“Our jurisdiction extends over so large a territory,” he observed, “that it must be raining somewhere.”

The wine was served.

It’s probably my favorite John Marshall story. Because only the man who spent his life defining the reach of federal jurisdiction would use it to justify another glass of Madeira.

By the time John Marshall finished his thirty-four years as Chief Justice, Americans no longer questioned whether the Supreme Court had authority.

They simply argued about how it should use it.

That’s a very different conversation, which set the stage for every constitutional battle that would follow.

John Marshall remained Chief Justice for thirty-four years.

Think about that for a moment.

He took his seat while Thomas Jefferson was beginning his presidency. He was still there when Andrew Jackson occupied the White House.

Six presidents. Thirty-four years. More than a thousand opinions.

By the time he died, an entire generation of Americans had grown up assuming the Supreme Court had always occupied its place as the final interpreter of the Constitution.

They had forgotten that, when Marshall arrived, none of that was guaranteed. Perhaps that’s the highest compliment anyone can pay him. He made something revolutionary feel inevitable.

One of the great ironies of John Marshall’s life is that the man who expanded the power of the Supreme Court never seemed particularly interested in expanding himself.

He hated ceremony and disliked unnecessary titles.

He often walked through Richmond carrying his own market basket, chatting with neighbors who sometimes had no idea they were talking to the Chief Justice of the United States. One famous story tells of a man criticizing one of Marshall’s own Supreme Court opinions right to his face without recognizing him. Marshall listened politely, asked a few questions, smiled, and never revealed who he was.

Whether every detail of the story has survived perfectly almost doesn’t matter. It captures the man. Marshall never confused authority with ego.

His home reflected much the same spirit.

He adored his wife, Mary “Polly” Marshall, whom he had married during the Revolutionary War. Their marriage lasted nearly fifty years, but it wasn’t always easy. Polly struggled with severe physical and emotional illnesses for much of her adult life, becoming increasingly withdrawn as the years passed. Marshall remained devoted to her anyway. Friends often remarked on his extraordinary tenderness toward her, quietly arranging his life around her needs without complaint or public display.

It tells you something about a man. The same patience that allowed him to persuade fellow justices rather than overpower them also defined his life at home.

If Marshall possessed a superpower, it wasn’t simply intelligence.

It was persuasion.

He almost never humiliated colleagues. He almost never sought the dramatic flourish. Instead, he listened, reasoned, asked questions, and gradually led people toward agreement. Justice Joseph Story marveled at Marshall’s ability to unite very different personalities behind a single opinion. He wasn’t simply writing decisions.

He was building consensus and as we have seen on this list, that’s considerably harder. Anyone can win an argument. Very few people can leave both sides believing they were heard.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, himself one of the greatest justices in American history, later wrote that if American law could be represented by one figure, “it could be only John Marshall.”

That’s astonishing praise coming from someone who knew exactly what the job required. But I think Marshall’s greatest achievement wasn’t a single opinion. It was something larger. He convinced Americans that the rules mattered more than the people playing the game.

That sounds obvious now, but it wasn’t then.

When Marbury v. Madison was decided, Jefferson hated it. Andrew Jackson would later ignore another Supreme Court decision he disliked. Congress frequently bristled when the Court struck down laws.

A generation later, Andrew Jackson would effectively refuse to enforce the Court’s decision in Worcester v. Georgia, allowing the forced removal of the Cherokee to continue despite Marshall’s ruling recognizing tribal sovereignty. A famous quote is often attributed to Jackson, ”John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it.” Historians debate whether Jackson actually said those words, but they accurately captured the constitutional crisis.

Marshall understood something uncomfortable about the judiciary.

The Supreme Court has no army. No treasury. No ability to enforce its own decisions.

Its authority ultimately depends on the willingness of the American people, and their elected leaders, to respect the rule of law.

That may sound fragile. Remarkably, it has endured.

Marshall understood something that still feels remarkably modern. A constitutional republic doesn’t survive because everyone gets their way. It survives because everyone eventually accepts that no one gets the final word alone.

I’ve always thought baseball offers a wonderful analogy here.

The umpire isn’t the most talented person on the field. Nobody buys tickets to watch the umpire or wears his jersey. They never want to becomes the story. In fact, if the umpire has done his job well, people barely notice him at all.

Until there’s a close play. Then suddenly, everyone wants to know who gets to make the call.

Marshall spent thirty-four years making sure America always had an answer to that question.

There is another irony that makes me smile.

Marshall and James Madison spent much of their lives solving the same problem from opposite directions. Madison wrote the rulebook and Marshall enforced it.

Madison worried about human nature and designed a government that assumed people would disagree. Marshall made sure those disagreements didn’t tear the government apart.

Both built systems. One designed the game and the other made sure it could actually be played.

Today the Supreme Court sits in one of the most recognizable buildings in Washington. Every June, reporters camp outside waiting for decisions that shape everything from elections to education, from healthcare to free speech. Television cameras analyze every justice’s question during oral arguments. Confirmation hearings dominate the news for weeks.

None of that existed when John Marshall became Chief Justice. Marshall didn’t inherit that institution, he had to create it.

Near the end of his life, Marshall reflected on the Constitution he had spent decades defending. He never viewed it as perfect. He viewed it as durable. His famous reminder remains one of the wisest sentences ever written by an American judge:

“We must never forget that it is a Constitution we are expounding.”

Not a statute, or a temporary law.

A Constitution.

A framework intended to outlive the people who wrote it, and the people interpreting it.

George Washington gave America its first indispensable leader. James Madison wrote the blueprint and John Marshall made sure no one could change the rules every time they became inconvenient.

That’s a different kind of greatness. The best referee isn’t the one everyone notices. It’s the one both teams trust enough to keep playing.

For more than two centuries, Americans have argued over elections, executive power, free speech, religion, guns, privacy, immigration, voting rights, and questions John Marshall himself could never have imagined.

The remarkable thing isn’t that we still disagree. It’s that we still know where those arguments belong. John Marshall made sure of that.

And because he did, the game has never stopped.

Every baseball team has one.

The superstar hits forty home runs. The ace throws complete games. The closer gets the dramatic ninth inning. Those are the names everyone remembers.

Then there is the guy in the video room who notices the opposing hitter drops his hands just before a fastball inside. Nobody buys his jersey. Nobody asks for his autograph. But the team wins because he saw something no one else did.

History works that way too.

George Washington is the towering hero on horseback. Thomas Jefferson wrote the soaring poetry of the Declaration. Alexander Hamilton dazzled everyone in the room. Benjamin Franklin could seemingly invent, negotiate, charm, and joke his way through any situation.

And then there was James Madison.

Five feet four.

Barely one hundred pounds. Soft spoken. Not physically impressive by any measure.

If you had walked into Philadelphia in the summer of 1787, your eyes probably wouldn’t have found him first. They would have drifted toward Washington, whose mere presence seemed to fill a room, or Franklin, whose reputation had already crossed oceans. Madison looked more like the smartest student in the class than the man who was about to design the government under which more than 340 million Americans still live today.

History has a habit of underestimating people like that.

One of the things that struck me while reading these biographies was how often Madison has been described as shy. Lynne Cheney spends a good deal of time pushing back against that idea. He wasn’t timid. He wasn’t socially awkward. He simply understood that not every battle needed to be fought with the loudest voice. Sometimes silence was an advantage. Sometimes letting other people underestimate you was the smartest move available.

The older I get, the more I appreciate people like that. They don’t need to win the room. They just need to solve the problem.

That was James Madison.

He grew up at Montpelier in Virginia, the oldest son of a prosperous plantation family, but comfort never seemed to make him complacent. Even as a young man he worried constantly about ideas. At Princeton he devoured history, philosophy, law, political theory, and ancient republics with the appetite of someone who suspected the future might someday require all of it.

Most college students hope the exam will cover chapters three through seven. James Madison seemed determined to read the whole library.

His classmates remembered him studying so relentlessly that they worried about his health. It wasn’t unusual to find him awake long after everyone else had gone to bed, surrounded by books and notes. Irving Brant describes a young man whose preparation bordered on obsessive because Madison believed important questions deserved serious thought.

Fortunately for America, one of those important questions happened to be, “How should a free people govern themselves?”

Long before there was a Constitution, there was another experience that permanently shaped him.

Madison watched Baptist ministers thrown into Virginia jails simply because they preached without approval from the established church. The sight disgusted him. He wrote passionately against religious persecution, insisting that government had no business deciding how, or whether, a person worshiped. Those convictions eventually helped produce the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom alongside Jefferson, and later found their way into the First Amendment itself. Cheney argues that Madison’s lifelong defense of liberty grew directly out of those early experiences.

Sometimes history changes because someone witnesses an injustice they simply cannot forget.

When the Revolution ended, America had won its independence but not much else.

The Articles of Confederation had created a nation that was, in many ways, a nation only on paper. Congress couldn’t effectively tax. It couldn’t reliably raise an army. States argued with one another like neighbors disputing a fence line. Foreign governments wondered whether this new republic would survive another decade.

Madison studied all of it. While others complained about what wasn’t working, he wanted to know why it wasn’t working and that distinction changed history.

If you’ve ever renovated an old house, you know there comes a point when patching another crack in the wall stops making sense. Eventually someone has to admit the foundation itself isn’t right. That’s where Madison found America.

He didn’t want another repair. He wanted a redesign. Quit throwing good money at a bad problem.

By the time delegates gathered in Philadelphia in 1787, Madison had spent years preparing for a convention most people weren’t even sure would happen. He read everything he could find about ancient Greece, the Roman Republic, the Swiss Confederation, the Dutch Republic, the failures of history’s republics, and the rare examples that had endured. Ralph Ketcham (no relation) describes a man who arrived carrying not simply opinions but an extraordinary body of research few others had assembled.

Imagine showing up to the Super Bowl after watching every snap of film from every game your opponent had ever played. That was Madison entering Independence Hall.

The Virginia Plan that he helped develop became the framework for nearly every major debate that followed. It wasn’t adopted word for word, compromise would shape the final document, but nearly every conversation in that room began with Madison’s blueprint. People often call him the Father of the Constitution.

I actually think “architect” is the better title.

Fathers inspire but architects calculate. They anticipate where walls will bear weight. They decide which beams matter and which can move. They think about storms that haven’t arrived yet. Madison wasn’t trying to write a government for perfect people.

He knew better than that. He was trying to build one sturdy enough to survive imperfect ones.

One of my favorite Madison quotes isn’t the famous line about angels.

It’s another observation that feels just as relevant today.

“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance.”

He believed an educated citizenry wasn’t simply helpful to a republic. It was essential. A free government only works if its people understand enough to keep it free. It’s remarkable how often his ideas sound less like the eighteenth century and more like tomorrow.

Then there is perhaps the greatest gift Madison ever gave historians.

He took notes. Bless him.

Page after page. Day after day. While the Constitutional Convention met behind closed doors, Madison quietly recorded what was said, who argued, which compromises emerged, and how the delegates reached them. He kept those notes private until after the last surviving delegates had died, believing history deserved an honest record rather than political ammunition.

Without James Madison, we would know astonishingly little about how the Constitution actually came to be. He didn’t just help write history he brought us into the room, hundreds of years later.

And somehow, amid all of this reading, writing, debating, and helping design the machinery of American government, James Madison found himself facing a problem no amount of political philosophy had prepared him for.

He had fallen in love.

I had always wondered home Jimmy Madison pulled a total babe like Dolly Madison, and the story did not disappoint.

Dolley Payne Todd was one of the most admired women in Philadelphia. Recently widowed after yellow fever claimed both her husband and infant son, she possessed an easy warmth that seemed to draw people toward her. Friends remarked on her wit as much as her beauty, and one Quaker acquaintance jokingly advised her, “Really, Dolley, thou must hide thy face,” because men seemed incapable of looking anywhere else.

Madison, meanwhile, was forty-three years old, brilliant beyond measure, and had somehow never married. So what did the future Father of the Constitution do?

He asked Aaron Burr to introduce them.

Yes... that Aaron Burr.

History remembers Burr for one famous duel. America owes him at least partial credit for one famous marriage. Dolley later delighted in telling friends that Burr had informed her “the great little Madison” wished to call on her that very evening. She welcomed him wearing a mulberry satin dress and yellow glass beads, and before long the quiet Virginian who rarely revealed much emotion was completely captivated.

The best part comes next.

Madison apparently found constitutional conventions much easier than courtship. Too embarrassed to express his feelings directly, he enlisted their mutual friend Catharine Coles to speak on his behalf. Coles happily reported to Dolley that Madison thought about her all day, dreamed about her all night, and “burns to such an excess that he will shortly be consumed.” She added that every word had been approved by Madison himself, who listened with what she described as “sparkling eyes.”

For all the brilliance that would eventually give America the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and The Federalist Papers, James Madison was still just a man trying to impress a woman who made him forget every carefully prepared speech.

Fortunately for him, it worked. History has produced stranger marriages than James and Dolley Madison. I’m just not sure there have been many more delightful ones.

James Madison was brilliant, disciplined, methodical, and happiest surrounded by books. Dolley Payne Todd was charming, outgoing, effortlessly funny, and seemed capable of making every person in a room feel like the most important guest there. If Madison quietly built coalitions, Dolley filled the room with people willing to join them.

They complemented one another perfectly. I’ve spent enough time reading about James Madison to conclude he may have been the smartest man in America. I’ve also spent enough time reading about Dolley Madison to conclude she was almost certainly the better politician.

When they married in 1794, some people questioned the match. Madison was seventeen years older, physically unimposing, and hardly what anyone would describe as dashing. Dolley was one of the most admired young widows in Philadelphia, known for her warmth, humor, and remarkable social grace.

History contains a few enduring mysteries.

How the pyramids were built.

Why socks disappear in the dryer.

And how James Madison somehow landed the most captivating woman in the new republic.

Whatever his secret was, it worked.

If George Washington gave the presidency dignity, Dolley Madison gave it personality.

Long before Americans expected First Ladies to play a public role, Dolley understood something James instinctively knew but rarely practiced himself: government runs on relationships as much as laws.

She remembered names, birthdays, and everyone’s children. She welcomed political rivals into the same drawing room, coaxed conversations between men who barely trusted one another, and somehow made Washington society feel less like a battlefield and more like a neighborhood gathering. She never cast a vote, but she influenced plenty of them.

By then, Madison had already added another remarkable accomplishment to his résumé.

He had helped write the Constitution. Now he had to convince Americans to accept it.

Together with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, Madison wrote the essays we now know as The Federalist Papers. Hamilton wrote more of them, but Madison authored what many scholars consider the two most important, Federalist No. 10 and Federalist No. 51.

One explained why factions were inevitable. The other explained why ambition had to be used against ambition. It’s one of the great paradoxes in American history. Madison didn’t design our government because he trusted politicians. He designed it because he didn’t.

“If men were angels,” he famously wrote, “no government would be necessary.”

They aren’t. So government had better assume that. That may be the most realistic sentence ever written about politics.

One of my favorite Madison stories is that he was perfectly willing to change his mind.

Originally, he wasn’t convinced the Constitution even needed a Bill of Rights. He worried that listing specific rights might unintentionally suggest government possessed every power that wasn’t listed. Then he listened.

State conventions kept raising the same concern. Ordinary Americans wanted explicit protections for speech, religion, the press, assembly, and due process. Madison could have dug in his heels. Instead, he did something rarer in politics.

He admitted the other side had a point.

The man who had questioned the need for a Bill of Rights became the man who wrote one. That tells me as much about James Madison as anything else in his life. His loyalty was never to his own opinions. It was to building the strongest republic possible.

There’s another irony here that has always fascinated me. Madison spent years warning about factions in politics. Then he helped create America’s first political party. Not because he suddenly decided parties were a wonderful idea. Because he concluded Alexander Hamilton’s vision for the country required organized opposition.

History has a funny way of forcing people to compromise with their own theories.

When Thomas Jefferson became president, Madison served as his secretary of state. The two men worked together so closely that it often felt like they shared a single political mind. Jefferson painted in broad strokes. Madison worried about the details. Jefferson dreamed. Madison figured out how to make the dream function.

Then, in 1809, Madison inherited the presidency.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about presidents is that they don’t get to choose the cards they’re dealt.

Bill Clinton didn’t ask for the economic boom of the 1990s, but I'm sure was happy to take it. George W. Bush certainly didn’t ask for September 11. Franklin Roosevelt didn’t request the Great Depression.

James Madison didn’t wake up hoping Great Britain would seize American ships, impress American sailors into the Royal Navy, choke off American trade, and drag the young republic into a war it was barely prepared to fight.

History deals the cards. Presidents simply have to play the hand.

The War of 1812 has never enjoyed the reputation of the Revolution or the Civil War. It feels smaller in our memories than it did to the people living through it.

To Madison, it felt enormous. The American military was underprepared. Political divisions remained fierce. New England openly opposed the conflict. Britain, having just spent years fighting Napoleon, could finally devote its full attention to America.

Then came August of 1814. British troops marched toward Washington. Madison did something no sitting president has done before or since. He rode out to the battlefield himself.

The smallest commander in chief in American history, barely five-foot-four and weighing around one hundred pounds, was suddenly on horseback trying to understand troop movements, confer with generals, and encourage soldiers as the Battle of Bladensburg unfolded.

It didn’t help. The battle collapsed into chaos. Madison barely escaped capture as British forces marched into the capital. It remains one of the darkest days any American president has ever experienced.

Back in Washington, Dolley Madison was facing a crisis of her own.

She had been urged to flee.

Instead, she delayed her departure long enough to rescue important government papers and, most famously, Gilbert Stuart’s magnificent portrait of George Washington. The painting has become the legend, but what strikes me most is the calm determination behind it. Dolley understood that symbols matter. Saving Washington’s portrait wasn’t simply about preserving a painting.

It was about preserving continuity. The British could burn buildings. They weren’t going to burn the idea of the United States. The British set fire to the White House, the Capitol, and other government buildings.

It looked, for a brief moment, as though Madison’s great constitutional experiment might be ending almost as quickly as it had begun. Instead; it endured. The Constitution survived the flames. So did the republic. And perhaps that is the greatest testament to James Madison’s work. He had designed a government sturdy enough to withstand catastrophe.

The War of 1812 eventually ended much the way so many wars do.

Not with perfect victory. With exhaustion. The Treaty of Ghent restored things largely to where they had been before the fighting began, which has led generations of students to ask whether the war accomplished much of anything.

The answer, oddly enough, is yes.

Quite a lot.

Americans emerged with a renewed confidence that their republic could survive a war against the world’s greatest military power. The Battle of New Orleans transformed Andrew Jackson into a national hero. Francis Scott Key, watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry, wrote the poem that eventually became The Star-Spangled Banner.

And James Madison?

He watched the government he had helped design survive its first truly existential test. That may have mattered more than any battlefield victory.

The war also produced one of the stranger records in presidential history.

Madison is the only president ever to lose two vice presidents while in office.

George Clinton died in 1812.

His replacement, Elbridge Gerry, the same Gerry whose name gave us the word gerrymander, died two years later.

It’s one of those wonderfully odd bits of presidential trivia that almost nobody remembers, largely because Madison had more pressing things to worry about than replacing running mates.

When his presidency ended, Madison finally had something he had rarely enjoyed during public life.

Time to think. He retired to Montpelier, but retirement for James Madison looked suspiciously like another full-time job. He advised younger politicians, corresponded with old friends, helped Thomas Jefferson establish the University of Virginia, and continued wrestling with the great question that had haunted him since his youth:

How do you preserve liberty? One of his favorite answers never changed.

Knowledge.

“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance,” he wrote. “And a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”

Madison believed republics didn’t survive because of parchment. They survived because citizens understood the parchment.

Like so many of the Founding Fathers, Madison also wrestled with the greatest contradiction in American history.

He had devoted his life to building a republic based on liberty while owning enslaved people at Montpelier. That contradiction troubled him increasingly as he aged, but unlike Washington, he never freed those he enslaved.

It’s impossible to tell Madison’s story honestly without acknowledging that painful truth. The Constitution he helped design contained the seeds of freedom that later generations would use to challenge slavery, but it also reflected the compromises of its own time. Madison understood many of those tensions better than anyone.

He simply never solved them. History rarely gives us perfect heroes. It gives us complicated ones.

There’s another irony that has always fascinated me. James Madison spent years studying why republics failed. He worried about ambitious politicians and regional rivalries. He worried about political parties and about demagogues. He worried about majorities trampling minorities, minorities obstructing majorities.

In other words he spent an astonishing amount of time worrying about us.

Then he built a government anyway. He did not think Americans would always make wise decisions, Because he believed free people deserved a system capable of surviving their unwise ones. That is a remarkably optimistic form of realism.

Every so often someone declares the Constitution outdated. Someone else insists it has become almost sacred. Madison would probably have been uncomfortable with both extremes. He expected Americans to argue. In fact, he designed the system assuming they would.

The branches compete, and so do the states. Ideas, Political parties, idea all compete.

Hell, Ambition competes against ambition. The machine only works because nobody gets everything they want. That isn’t a flaw, it’s more like the design.

Sometimes I wonder what Madison would think if he could see America today.

He would undoubtedly be astonished by airplanes, satellites, smartphones, and the internet. He might be even more astonished that the framework he sketched with a quill pen still governs a nation of more than 340 million people.

It has survived a Civil War. The Great Depression. Two world wars. Presidential assassinations. Watergate. The Cold War. Terrorist attacks. Impeachments. Television. Social media. Cable news.

And roughly two and a half centuries of Americans passionately disagreeing with one another.

The remarkable thing isn’t that the Constitution has solved every problem but more so that it has survived every one of them.

James Madison never became America’s tallest Founding Father, in ability, charm, or strength but he built something less visible and the least visible things are often the ones that last the longest.

I’ve always loved architecture because the best buildings eventually disappear into everyday life. You stop noticing the beams, the foundation, and the load-bearing walls, not because they aren’t important, but because they’re doing exactly what they were designed to do.

That’s James Madison.

Most Americans rarely think about separation of powers until there’s a constitutional crisis. They rarely think about checks and balances until one branch challenges another. They rarely think about the Bill of Rights until one of those rights feels threatened. Madison would probably consider that a compliment.

If the architecture is doing its job, people spend their time living inside the house rather than worrying whether it will stay standing.

George Washington helped build the nation. Thomas Jefferson gave it its ideals.

James Madison designed the operating system that made all of it work.

More than two centuries later, it’s still running. That’s why James Madison belongs in the Top 10. Not because he gave America its most inspiring words.

Because he gave those words the best chance to endure.

I’ve changed my mind more about this essay than any other in this series.

For a while, I seriously considered leaving Neil Armstrong off the list altogether. It wasn’t that I questioned his importance. Quite the opposite. I just wasn’t sure he was really the right person to represent what happened on July 20, 1969.

At various points I considered replacing him with John F. Kennedy. After all, without Kennedy’s challenge, perhaps none of it happens. I thought about calling this chapter “The 400,000 Americans Who Took Us to the Moon,” because that number feels far more honest than pretending one man accomplished the impossible alone. For an afternoon, I even toyed with naming it after Michael Collins, the often-forgotten astronaut who orbited the Moon alone while the rest of humanity watched Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin make history below.

Every option had something going for it. Every option had one problem. None of them took that first step.

Neil Armstrong did.

And if you asked Neil Armstrong himself, he’d probably tell you that distinction mattered a lot less than everyone else thinks it does.

History has a habit of placing one face on accomplishments that really belong to thousands.

Henry Ford didn’t build every Model T. Walt Disney didn’t draw every cartoon. Steve Jobs didn’t engineer every iPhone. Neil Armstrong didn’t take America to the Moon.

He simply happened to be the one who climbed down the ladder first.

That’s not diminishing his achievement. It’s honoring the way he understood it. Because if there was one quality everyone remembered about Neil Armstrong, it wasn’t fearlessness.

It was humility.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born in the tiny town of Wapakoneta, Ohio, in 1930. His father worked as an auditor for the state of Ohio, which meant the family moved constantly during Neil’s childhood. By the time he graduated from high school, he had attended more than a dozen different schools.

For many children, that would have been unsettling.

Neil simply found something that never changed.

Airplanes.

Before he could remember makes or models of automobiles, he could identify aircraft overhead. Friends recalled that if a plane crossed the sky in the middle of a conversation, Neil’s eyes immediately followed it upward. He knew the engines, the wings, the manufacturers, the performance. Long before he became the world’s most famous astronaut, he was simply the kid who couldn’t stop looking up.

People often assume that Neil dreamed of becoming an astronaut. He didn’t. Why not? Well, there weren’t any astronauts yet. He dreamed of becoming a pilot. Space was simply where aviation eventually led.

One of my favorite discoveries while reading about Armstrong had nothing to do with NASA.

It had everything to do with the Boy Scouts. And as an Eagle Scout myself, I feel obligated to share it.

Neil earned the rank of Eagle Scout at sixteen, and the stories from those years sound remarkably familiar once you know the adult he became. During one required twenty-mile hike, his troop was dragging after hours of walking when Neil suddenly announced he needed to pick up the pace.

Why?

Because he had to get to his after-school job at the local bakery. His friends watched him alternate between walking and jogging from telephone pole to telephone pole until he disappeared ahead of them. The next morning, he was at work on time.

That’s Neil Armstrong in one story. No drama or complaints, just doing what needed to be done. Years later, when he stepped onto the Moon, Neil carried something with him that almost nobody remembers.

Not just an American flag, a giant wrench, or a scientific instruments, he carried the World Scout Badge. It wasn’t there for publicity. Most people never knew.

It was simply one way of thanking an organization that had helped shape the boy long before the world knew the man. Even after Apollo, Armstrong regularly wrote congratulatory letters to new Eagle Scouts until the requests became so numerous, nearly a thousand at a time, that he finally stopped, explaining that those letters should come from someone who actually knew the Scout, not from a famous stranger.

I’ve read a lot about Neil Armstrong, and that’s about as Neil Armstrong as anything I’ve ever read.

At sixteen, before he even had a driver’s license, Armstrong earned his pilot’s license.

Think about that for a moment. He could legally fly an airplane before he could legally drive to the airport. He paid for flying lessons by working odd jobs, including that bakery, and by the time he graduated from high school he had already accumulated more hours in the cockpit than many adults.

The Navy interrupted college, sending him to Korea, where he flew seventy-eight combat missions before returning to Purdue University to finish his engineering degree. From there he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, NACA, which would eventually become NASA.

It was the perfect fit. Neil loved solving problems that most people didn’t even know existed.

One of the biggest surprises for me while reading these books is that Neil Armstrong may have done his greatest flying three years before Apollo 11.

Almost no one remembers Gemini 8, however pilots never forgot it.

In March 1966, Armstrong and David Scott successfully completed the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit, one of NASA’s most important milestones. Then everything went wrong. A thruster jammed open and the spacecraft began spinning. Slow at first, then faster.

Soon it was rotating so violently that both astronauts were beginning to lose their vision. They were approaching the point where unconsciousness, and death, were only moments away.

Armstrong never panicked.

While the spacecraft spun nearly once every second, he calmly diagnosed the problem, shut down the correct systems, and used the reentry thrusters to stop the spin.

The mission ended immediately. Their lives didn’t. David Scott later said something remarkable. He believed Neil Armstrong had probably “saved the Moon.”

Because had Gemini 8 ended in disaster, Armstrong almost certainly would never have commanded Apollo 11. NASA already knew Neil Armstrong was one of its finest pilots. Gemini 8 proved something even more valuable.

When everything fell apart, Neil Armstrong did not.

If Gemini 8 proved Neil Armstrong could save a mission, Apollo 11 asked an entirely different question.

Could he finish one?

By the summer of 1969, America had spent nearly a decade racing toward the Moon. President Kennedy had challenged the nation to do something that sounded almost ridiculous in 1961: land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the decade was over. The challenge wasn’t simply political. It was technological. The computers required didn’t yet exist. Neither did many of the materials, manufacturing techniques, navigation systems, or software.

The Moon wasn’t waiting for America. America had to invent the tools to reach it.

That’s one reason I kept wondering whether this chapter should really be called “The 400,000 Americans Who Took Us to the Moon.” Because that’s roughly how many people made Apollo possible.

Neil Armstrong simply became their face.

One of the wonderful things about reading Team Moon is discovering how many ordinary people quietly built one of history’s most extraordinary accomplishments.

There were the Grumman engineers on Long Island who designed the Lunar Module, a spacecraft so fragile that it looked like it had been assembled from aluminum foil and optimism. They joked that it couldn’t survive a strong wind, which was fortunate because it would never encounter one. It was the first spacecraft designed to fly only in the vacuum of space, where elegance mattered far less than weight.

There were the women at ILC Dover in Delaware, many of whom had spent years sewing bras and girdles before NASA hired them to stitch space suits. Every seam had to be perfect. One skipped stitch, one tiny flaw invisible to the naked eye, could mean death nearly 240,000 miles from home. America trusted astronauts to walk on the Moon.

The astronauts trusted seamstresses.

There were software engineers at MIT led by Margaret Hamilton, whose team built guidance software unlike anything the world had ever seen.

During the landing, the Lunar Module's tiny computer suddenly started flashing the now-famous 1202 and 1201 alarms. Imagine trying to do your homework while someone keeps asking you questions, the phone is ringing, the dog is barking, and the doorbell won't stop ringing. The computer wasn't broken, it was simply being asked to do too many things at once. Thanks to software designed by Margaret Hamilton and her team at MIT, it did something revolutionary. Instead of freezing or crashing, it set aside the less important tasks and kept working on the one job that mattered most: landing on the Moon.

It prioritized.

That decision, made years before the launch by programmers sitting behind desks in Massachusetts, may have saved the Moon landing.

Then there was Jack Garman.

He’s one of my favorite people in the entire Apollo story because almost nobody knows his name. Sitting in Mission Control at just twenty-four years old, Garman instantly recognized the meaning of those 1202 alarms. Gene Kranz looked at him and asked the question that mattered more than any other:

“Can we continue?”

Garman answered with one word.

“Go.”

Sometimes history turns on one engineer who did his homework. That’s Jack Garman.

And then there was Gene Kranz.

Every baseball team has a manager who somehow appears calmer than everyone else, even when his stomach is in knots. That was Gene Kranz. He was Bruce Bochy, with a smaller head.

Before the Apollo 11 landing, he attended Mass, listened to John Philip Sousa marches, and put on a crisp white vest sewn by his wife specifically for the mission. Those white vests would eventually become his trademark, but on that day they also became a quiet reminder that everyone in Mission Control understood the magnitude of what they were attempting.

People often remember Apollo as three astronauts.

It was also a room full of men and women refusing to blink.

Gene Kranz’s even finer moment might be during Apollo 13, getting the astronauts back home.

Meanwhile, three astronauts were doing their own jobs.

Buzz Aldrin was exactly the partner Armstrong needed. Brilliant, analytical, and endlessly energetic, Aldrin often thought out loud while Neil listened. They balanced one another beautifully. Armstrong rarely sought attention, and Aldrin never apologized for embracing it. Together they made an outstanding crew.

Then there was Michael Collins.

Like I said, I honestly thought about naming this essay after him.

While Neil and Buzz descended toward the Moon, Collins remained alone aboard the command module Columbia. Every time he passed behind the far side of the Moon, he became the most isolated human being who has ever lived. No radio contact. No visual contact with Earth. Just one man orbiting another world, knowing that if something went wrong below, he would have to come home alone.

Yet Collins never sounded bitter. Years later, he joked that if the landing failed, he would become “a marked man.” That’s vintage Michael Collins.

When Neil and Buzz finally climbed back aboard after their moonwalk, Collins later admitted he had the overwhelming urge to kiss Buzz on the forehead. Embarrassed by the thought, he settled for a handshake instead.

History remembers heroes. I love moments that remind us they’re also just friends.

The landing itself almost didn’t happen.

As Armstrong looked through the window, he realized the computer was guiding Eagle toward a boulder field. So he took manual control and the fuel ticked downward.

Sixty seconds.

Thirty seconds.

Dust filled the windows as Mission Control waited. Then, finally, came one of the calmest transmissions in history.

“Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

The room erupted.

Neil Armstrong didn’t. That was never really his style. A few hours later, he climbed down the ladder and stepped onto the lunar surface. He spoke eleven words that every American can almost recite by heart. We don’t need to repeat them here.

History already has.

What I find more moving are the words that came afterward.

Armstrong looked into the television camera and said,

That’s Neil Armstrong.

Standing on another world and talking about everyone else.

He even packed reminders that the mission belonged to more than himself.

Along with the American flag, Armstrong carried the World Scout Badge, medals honoring Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Komarov, Apollo 1 memorial medallions for Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee, and other small keepsakes honoring people who had helped make the journey possible.

Even on the Moon, he was thinking about those who weren’t there.
