“Video killed the radio star.”

In 1960, making music was hard.

You needed musicians, equipment, a studio, engineers, money.

Getting people to hear it was even harder.

You needed a label. Radio. Records. Trucks. Stores. Shelf space.

Then the barriers started falling.

Recording got cheaper.

Distribution got easier.

Napster kicked the door off the hinges.

Then came downloads, YouTube, Spotify, streaming.

Today, someone can make a song in a bedroom and reach the other side of the world before breakfast.

That doesn’t mean the song is good.

It means the old barriers are gone.

Production changed.

Distribution changed.

Demand remained.

People still wanted the music.

Maybe Michael Jackson had it right.

Just beat it.

Because I think something similar is happening in tennis and pickleball.

And we still have a remarkably difficult question:

Why do we win?

Why do we lose?

It certainly isn’t because we’re short on information.

We have ratings.

Scores.

Standings.

Video.

Match histories.

Player profiles.

Tournament draws.

Statistics.

Podcasts.

YouTube instruction.

Slow-motion breakdowns.

Every player has a camera in their pocket.

Every league has results somewhere.

Every coach has content.

Every famous player has an opinion.

Information is everywhere.

Which creates a different problem.

What do I do with all this information?

I lost 11–7, 11–8.

Okay.

My rating dropped.

Okay.

I have the video.

Great.

I know my opponent’s rating, my partner’s rating, our previous results and where everybody sits in the standings.

Wonderful.

Now tell me something I actually want to know.

Why did we lose?

Was the other team better?

Did we play badly?

Was the matchup wrong?

Did we attack the wrong player?

Was my partner off?

Was I?

Did we lose because of something we can fix?

Or am I about to change something that isn’t actually broken?

The scoreboard gives us an outcome.

It rarely gives us an explanation.

Then comes the drive home.

The great laboratory of amateur sports analysis.

The match ended twenty minutes ago.

Your brain disagrees.

You replay the return you missed at 8–8.

Then the speed-up you shouldn’t have hit.

Then the three balls your partner left high.

By the time you reach the highway, you have a theory.

Your partner has one too.

Unfortunately, it is a different theory.

“We weren’t aggressive enough.”

We were too aggressive.

“We should have stayed away from her.”

She wasn’t the problem.

“We played terribly.”

Did we?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Memory has a funny habit of promoting whatever hurt the most into evidence.

One bad point becomes the point.

One bad decision becomes the strategy.

One loss becomes proof the partnership doesn’t work.

This is why competitive players don’t really want more data.

They want help making sense of what already happened.

The match ended. The analysis didn’t.

Historically, the best solution was a good coach.

And a good coach still matters enormously.

But there is a problem nobody talks about much.

Attention doesn’t scale very well.

A coach might know the game brilliantly.

They might know you pretty well.

But they may also have 50, 100 or 200 players passing through their world.

They didn’t watch every match.

They don’t remember every opponent.

They aren’t comparing every partnership.

They can’t answer every text after every league night.

And even when they know the answer, another problem appears.

Sometimes coaches see something they can’t quite articulate.

“You’re getting rushed.”

“You’re too passive.”

“You need to attack more.”

“You’re leaving balls up.”

Maybe all of that is correct.

But the player still needs translation.

When?

Against whom?

How often?

Is that actually why I lost?

What should I do differently next time?

Knowing something and making it useful are not the same skill.

That matters.

Because the real luxury in high-level sports was never just access to statistics.

The luxury was having somebody good enough to think about you.

Somebody who remembered.

Somebody who connected the dots.

Somebody who could take what happened and turn it into something you could understand and use.

Most ordinary players never had much access to that.

Instead, sports built an entire economy around proximity.

Train with the famous coach.

Attend the camp.

Join the academy.

Subscribe to the pro.

Follow the player.

Get closer to expertise.

There is value in that.

But there is also an uncomfortable question:

Does the expert actually know your game?

A coach can have 500,000 followers.

They can have coached champions.

They can give fantastic advice.

But do they know who you played Tuesday night?

Do they remember that the same problem showed up three weeks ago?

Do they know which partner actually produces your best results?

Do they know whether your latest loss was a pattern or an outlier?

Maybe not.

That doesn’t make the advice bad.

It makes it less personal.

Expertise scales. Attention doesn’t.

For a long time, follower count was a great proxy for distribution.

How many people can I reach?

That mattered enormously.

It still does.

But I wonder whether the more interesting question now is becoming:

How well can I understand one person?

Because reach and relevance are different businesses.

Music ran into a version of this problem too.

Once almost every song became available, scarcity moved.

The question stopped being:

Can I get the music?

It became:

What should I listen to?

That is where the algorithm became important.

The algorithm could remember what you played.

What you skipped.

What you returned to.

What people with similar tastes liked.

It could turn abundance into relevance.

Sports may be approaching a similar moment.

We already have the information.

The opportunity is connecting it.

Who did you play?

Who did you play with?

What happened last time?

What keeps happening?

What changed?

Which results matter?

Which ones don’t?

The algorithm doesn’t need 500,000 followers.

It needs to know one player well.

That changes the economics of attention.

A human coach has limited hours.

A system can remember continuously.

That doesn’t mean replacing coaches.

It means solving something coaches have always struggled to provide at scale:

context.

Memory.

Continuity.

Interpretation.

And maybe most importantly, articulation.

Take what happened.

Make it legible.

Then help the player decide what to do next.

That is the bet behind Brian’s League.

I’m not building it because competitive players need more information.

They don’t.

I’m building it because they already have the information and still leave the court confused.

Brian’s League remembers the player.

The matches.

The partners.

The opponents.

The results.

The patterns.

The questions.

Then the player can ask what they actually wanted to ask all along.

Why did I lose?

Why did I win?

Who should I play with?

Why does this team keep beating us?

Is this partnership working?

Am I actually improving?

What am I missing?

What should I do next?

The job isn’t to produce another statistic.

It’s simpler than that.

Turn what happened into something the player can understand — and use next time.

That’s the product.

And I think that’s the larger opportunity too.

Technology did not create the player’s curiosity.

It did not create the frustration after losing.

It did not create the argument with the partner.

It did not create the drive home.

Those were already there.

Just like the desire for music was already there.

The barriers changed.

The distribution changed.

And now, perhaps, access to meaningful interpretation is changing too.

Tomorrow, somebody will walk off a court.

They’ll know the score.

They’ll know their rating.

They may even have the video.

And before they reach the highway, they’ll ask:

Why?

The question never changed.

The access to the answer did.

Look at the back of an MLP jersey.

Ignore the point. Ignore the player for now. Just look at the lettering.

The fonts are an eyesore.

Some names are strangely large. Others are difficult to read. The lettering can look disconnected from the uniform and from the professional product surrounding it.

This is Major League Pickleball. Elite athletes. Serious investors. National sponsors. Growing television distribution. Six player franchises representing cities across the country.

Then a player turns around.

That sounds petty.

It isn’t.

The fonts are not the problem. They are evidence of one.

Somewhere between professional ambition and public execution, nobody with enough authority, judgment or taste stopped the product and said:

This isn’t good enough.

That is what makes small signals valuable. They reveal things an organization never intended to say.

The amateurism is being broadcast.

The Flea Market

Attend an APP event and the signal becomes an entire environment.

It can feel less like a professional sporting event and more like a pickleball flea market.

Vendor tents. Paddle companies. Clinics. Amateur brackets. Promotional booths. Players wandering between courts. Professional matches happening somewhere inside it all.

Everything is present.

Except hierarchy.

The vendors are not the problem.

Major golf and tennis tournaments contain enormous commercial villages. Sponsors activate. Merchandise gets sold. Spectators walk, eat and shop.

But the commerce is organized around the competition.

At an APP event, the commerce can feel like the event. The professional competition is something happening nearby.

A professional sporting event tells the audience:

Look at the athletes.

A flea market tells them:

Look around.

The difference is not money. It is judgment.

Someone has to decide what matters most, then direct everything else around it.

Pickleball has assembled many of the pieces of a professional sport. It has not always established the hierarchy that makes those pieces feel professional.

The People Who Moved First

This is not an indictment of the amateurs who built pickleball.

It is an acknowledgment of what they accomplished.

They organized games, created leagues, launched tournaments, streamed matches, started businesses and introduced millions of people to the sport. They did not wait for established sports institutions to approve the opportunity.

They moved.

Pickleball removed the gatekeepers.

That openness became its advantage. Someone could discover the sport, develop an idea and begin building without credentials, institutional support or permission.

Professionals may have studied the opportunity longer.

Amateurs built the sport while they were studying it.

Without that energy, pickleball might still be treated as a recreational activity hidden inside retirement communities and municipal parks.

Amateurism was not the weakness in the system.

It was the engine.

But every engine eventually reaches a speed that demands better steering.

The money grows. The audience expands. Athletes build careers around the sport. Sponsors expect results. Television exposes details that were once visible only to the people beside the court.

Access can create an opportunity.

It cannot guarantee expertise.

That is the tension pickleball now faces:

How does a sport develop standards without rebuilding the gates it worked so hard to remove?

Team Franchises

MLP itself may be one of the strongest arguments that pickleball is professionalizing.

The league has good bones. The format is distinctive. The schedule provides direction. Six player rosters create decisions that individual tournament pickleball does not require.

MLP has built a professional platform.

Not every team franchise has developed the judgment required to operate professionally inside it.

Some team management still resembles fantasy football. Players become names, rankings and recent results. A strong weekend creates belief. A poor weekend invites criticism.

The people making those judgments may not understand the players they are evaluating.

They see the outcome.

They do not always see what produced it.

Partnership compatibility matters. Playing style matters. Roles, temperament and matchups matter. A player can look completely different beside another partner or against another team.

A good decision can lose.

A bad decision can win.

Yet a player can be publicly criticized as if one result revealed everything about the performance and everyone involved understood exactly why it happened.

That is the fantasy football problem.

The roster is visible. The score is visible. The person and the conditions producing the result are harder to see.

Anyone can criticize a player.

Professional management has to understand one.

The News Is Fast. Meaning Is Slow.

Pickleball broadcasts are getting better.

The production is improving. Distribution is expanding. Graphics are cleaner. Commentators are developing a deeper familiarity with the players and patterns inside a match.

The fans are also becoming more familiar with the commentators.

That matters. Audiences build relationships with the voices that repeatedly guide them through a sport. A broadcast begins to feel like a recognizable place instead of a stream someone happened to turn on.

Pickleball news media faces a different challenge.

Outlets such as The Dink and The Kitchen are covering a sport whose information moves faster than its reporting structure.

A roster move appears on Instagram. A controversy begins inside a group chat. A rumor moves through players and agents. Tournament results update while the next match is already beginning.

By the time an outlet publishes the development, much of the audience already knows what happened.

So the outlets chase.

They chase announcements, transactions, results and social posts because speed is visible. Interpretation takes time.

But reporting what happened is becoming a commodity.

The opportunity is explaining what it means.

Why does the roster move matter?

Was the upset an isolated result or evidence of something larger?

Which part of the announcement is substance?

What should the audience watch for next?

Podcasting exposes another side of the same issue.

Anyone can buy a microphone, invite a guest and publish a conversation.

That accessibility helped pickleball grow. It gave the sport voices before traditional media considered it worthy of attention.

But access to a microphone can also be confused with authority.

Knowing the players is not the same as understanding them. Repeating information is not reporting. Having an opinion is not interpretation.

Pickleball has plenty of people talking.

It still needs more people who can see.

The Missing Layer

The jersey fonts, the APP flea market experience, uneven franchise management and the race to publish news may appear unrelated.

They are signals from the same stage of development.

Pickleball has begun building professional infrastructure.

It has not yet developed enough professional interpretation.

The sport has leagues, teams, events, broadcasts and media outlets. The visible pieces are arriving.

The missing layer is judgment.

Who notices that the lettering weakens the product?

Who decides where the audience should look?

Who understands a player before criticizing the performance?

Who explains why something matters after everyone already knows it happened?

The solution is not to remove the enthusiasts and replace them with executives from established sports. Outsiders can bring experience and polish. They can also misunderstand the energy that made pickleball grow.

The sport does not need new gatekeepers.

It needs better standards.

That distinction will shape what comes next.

Pickleball grew because people were free to enter the room.

Its future will depend on whether the people inside the room can recognize who actually understands what they are seeing.

In the late summer of 2007, I lived in SoHo and ran adult tennis programs throughout Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.

One morning during the US Open, I sat in a café in Nolita reading a story that I never forgot.

Police were cracking down on ticket scalping outside the National Tennis Center. But they were not only chasing professional brokers who worked the sidewalks for a living. Ordinary tennis fans, including tourists with extra tickets, were being caught in the operation.

Some had bought tickets for friends who could no longer attend. They were not operating criminal enterprises. They were trying to recover the cost of tickets they had purchased legally.

Undercover officers approached them.

Criminal summonses followed.

They were not running a scalping business. They were tennis fans holding extra pieces of paper.

I remember that story because tennis was my life in New York. I was not reading about a distant industry. I spent my days organizing players and programs across the city. For two weeks every summer, the US Open became the center of our tennis world.

And I knew the geography.

New York law prohibited ticket resale within 1,500 feet of the venue. As a local, you knew where that line effectively began.

You stepped off the 7 train and you were already inside it.

There was no neutral area where a tourist could arrive, realize he had an extra ticket and find another fan who needed one. By the time you reached the tournament, you had entered the enforcement zone.

There were no velvet ropes marking the boundary. No sign announced that an ordinary exchange between two tennis fans could become a police matter.

You were simply expected to know.

Nearly twenty years later, is defending the US Open against criticism over ticket prices.

Roddick is the last American man to win the US Open.

He is not the first American I would ask what it costs an ordinary fan to get inside.

Inside the gates

Roddick knows the US Open as well as almost anyone alive.

He knows its courts. He knows its pressure. He knows what Arthur Ashe Stadium sounds like when an American is trying to win it.

But knowing how to win the US Open is not the same as knowing how ordinary people pay to enter it.

Roddick experienced the tournament as a player. Today, he also interprets it as a podcaster. I experienced it first as a local tennis professional arriving with everyone else.

Andy Roddick understands the US Open from inside the gates. I first understood it from the 7 train.

That difference matters now.

A public argument erupted this week after investor Bill Ackman drew attention to a day-one grounds pass listed for $363. The original face value was reportedly $65.

Roddick pushed back. His argument was that the USTA had priced the ticket affordably. The $363 listing came from a reseller responding to supply and demand on the secondary market.

His distinction is understandable.

It is also incomplete.

It would be a compelling defense if the secondary market were separate from the US Open.

It is not.

The official secondary market

Ticketmaster is not merely a resale website where US Open tickets happen to appear. It is the Official Fan Ticket Marketplace of the US Open.

The USTA and Ticketmaster describe a long-term partnership that allows fans to buy, sell and transfer verified tickets through Ticketmaster, USOpen.org and the tournament’s own app.

The partnership began in 2008.

That date should stop us for a moment.

In August 2007, a New York Times story documented police issuing summonses to fans trying to sell tickets near the National Tennis Center.

In 2008, the US Open Ticket Exchange allowed fans to buy and sell verified tickets through the tournament’s new official partner.

The behavior did not disappear.

It acquired a platform.

According to current reporting, the USTA’s contract with Ticketmaster also provides the organization with a small commission when tickets are resold.

That does not mean the USTA personally chooses every resale price. It does not mean the organization typed $363 into the listing.

It means the USTA is not a disinterested observer.

It selected the marketplace. It integrated that marketplace into the US Open ticketing system. It promotes the marketplace as official. And it participates financially when tickets are resold there.

Roddick is defending the face value.

The criticism concerns the system.

The USTA did not eliminate scalping. It brought scalping inside the gates.

From summons to service fee

The language changed first.

A fan on the sidewalk was a scalper.

A seller on Ticketmaster is a verified reseller.

The paper ticket became a digital asset. The sidewalk became a marketplace. The markup became dynamic pricing generated by supply and demand. The person standing between buyer and seller stopped being an undercover police officer and became a technology platform.

Then the money changed hands.

Twenty years ago, an exchange outside the system could result in a criminal summons.

Today, the same basic exchange conducted inside the approved system can produce fees and commissions.

The moral line was never where the 1,500-foot boundary began.

The real line separated transactions the institution controlled from transactions it did not.

That is why the current defense of US Open pricing feels incomplete. Saying that the USTA charges only $65 asks us to look at the first transaction and ignore everything the organization built around the second one.

The USTA does not have to control every resale price to have responsibility for the market it authorizes.

It also has choices.

Wimbledon restricts resale and operates its own tightly controlled return system. The Australian Open and French Open place different limits on what sellers may charge.

Each model involves tradeoffs, but each demonstrates that an open resale market with enormous markups is not a law of nature.

It is a design decision.

The USTA chose access, transferability and market pricing. Those choices make ticket ownership more flexible. They also allow scarce tickets to move rapidly from their original price into a market that many ordinary families cannot afford.

And when the governing body shares in the revenue generated by that movement, it loses the ability to describe the result as somebody else’s market.

Give the US Open credit

The US Open has also done something meaningful for access.

It expanded the event by adding a fun third week before the traditional fortnight and opened seven days of Fan Week to the public for free. Fans can watch qualifying, see world-class players practice and experience the National Tennis Center without purchasing a ticket.

That matters.

For families, local players and serious tennis fans, qualifying week may be one of the best values in professional sports.

Before the expensive fortnight begins, the US Open gives New York seven days for free.

The USTA deserves credit for building it.

It also makes the contradiction harder to ignore.

The same organization that can create seven days of free access has chosen a resale system that can turn a $65 grounds pass into a $363 purchase.

Those two facts can exist together.

The US Open can be unusually generous during Fan Week and unnecessarily permissive in its secondary market. An organization does not lose responsibility for one decision because it made a better decision somewhere else.

Fan Week proves the USTA knows how to create access. The secondary market reveals what happens when it chooses to monetize scarcity instead.

What changed?

I have no nostalgia for strangers exchanging cash around a train station. Street scalping created real problems. Counterfeit tickets existed. Tourists were vulnerable. A verified digital marketplace offers security that a sidewalk never could.

But security does not explain a fivefold markup.

Verification does not absolve the institution that designed the market.

And calling the transaction official does not transform its effect on the fan.

The person paying $363 for a $65 grounds pass does not experience a philosophical distinction between the primary and secondary markets.

He experiences the price.

That is the piece missing from Roddick’s argument.

As a former champion, his tennis authority is unquestionable. As a podcaster, his defense of the ticketing system deserves the same scrutiny as anyone else’s.

The point is not that Roddick is dishonest. It is not that the USTA is indifferent to ordinary fans. Fan Week proves otherwise.

The point is that separating the face value from the official resale market gives us an incomplete picture of the system the fan must navigate.

I remember the tourists. I remember the newspaper story. I remember getting off the 7 train and knowing exactly where the line was.

The US Open once relied on that line to distinguish legitimate ticket sales from scalping.

Today, the meaningful line is digital.

Sell the ticket in the wrong place and you are a problem.

Sell it in the approved marketplace and everyone gets paid.

Twenty years ago, scalping outside the US Open could get you a criminal summons. Today, it gets the USTA a commission.

Scalping did not become acceptable.

It became a business model.

Good question.

Maybe they do.

I have good news and bad news.

I’ll start with the bad news.

It’s all your fault.

Not the wind.

Not your partner.

Not the refs.

Not the line call.

Not the paddle.

Not the draw.

You.

I can already hear the objections.

“What if the call was terrible?”

“What if I got unlucky?”

“He keeps hanging his drops”

Maybe.

Maybe every word is true.

The problem isn’t whether the story is true.

The problem is what happens after you believe it.

Most players don’t realize they’re carrying around a lens.

A lens that turns every setback into evidence.

Evidence that they got unlucky.

Evidence that someone else caused it.

Evidence that the game happened to them.

It’s a comfortable lens.

It explains everything.

And changes nothing.

The victim mindset isn’t dangerous because it’s wrong.

It’s dangerous because it’s powerless.

If your partner caused the loss, your future depends on your partner.

If the refs caused the loss, your future depends on the refs.

If luck caused the loss, your future depends on luck.

That’s the trap.

The story might be true.

But it leaves you with nowhere to go.

Now for the good news.

It’s also all your fault.

Because fault isn’t the point.

Agency is.

The moment you ask:

What is my adjustment?

Everything changes.

Your partner is struggling.

What is my adjustment?

The wind is swirling.

What is my adjustment?

The refs missed the call.

What is my adjustment?

You missed an easy volley.

What is my adjustment?

That’s the lens.

Not blame.

Not denial.

Not pretending reality is fair.

Agency.

The best competitors don’t spend much time arguing with reality.

They spend their time navigating it.

Bad bounce.

Adjustment.

Bad call.

Adjustment.

Partner struggling.

Adjustment.

Missed sitter.

Adjustment.

That’s why responsibility is so powerful.

Not because it feels good.

Because it creates options.

The victim asks:

Why did this happen?

The competitor asks:

What do I do next?

One creates a story.

The other creates a future.

The funny thing is, you’re already the writer.

The director.

The producer.

The editor.

You’re already deciding what every event means.

The only question is whether the story creates blame or possibility.

Most people don’t need more reasons.

They need more options.

The wind.

The partner.

The bad call.

The missed volley.

Maybe the story is true.

Maybe it isn’t.

But if you keep writing the same ending, don’t be surprised when the story never changes.

At first glance, this looks like another story about pickleball noise.

It isn’t.

It’s a story about what happens when intelligent people spend years trying to solve the wrong problem.

Across the country, homeowners are filing lawsuits.

Boards are facing recalls.

Neighbors who once enjoyed living beside one another have stopped speaking.

Every community has its own explanation.

Players blame the neighbors.

Neighbors blame the board.

Boards blame developers.

Developers blame demand.

None of those explanations fully answer one simple question.

Why does the same conflict keep appearing in community after community?

Whenever different people keep producing the same outcome, it’s worth asking a different question.

What if the problem isn’t the people?

What if it’s something underneath them?

That question led me to three South Florida communities.

According to reporting by The Palm Beach Post, Parkside at Boca Trail, Polo Trace, and Crescent Lakes have each become flashpoints in the growing debate over pickleball noise.

The details are different.

The pattern isn’t.

At Parkside, residents filed suit after saying the sound from nearby courts invaded their homes. One homeowner described it as feeling “like they’re playing in my kitchen.”

At Polo Trace, homeowners challenged courts built close to homes and plans for additional expansion.

At Crescent Lakes, converting tennis courts into pickleball courts helped spark a recall effort against the board.

Three communities.

Three different stories.

One remarkably familiar ending.

That’s when I realized I had been asking the same question everyone else was asking.

Who is responsible?

It turns out...

...that was the wrong question.

Because this story stops looking like a neighborhood dispute.

It stops looking like a legal dispute.

It even stops looking like a pickleball dispute.

It starts looking like an engineering problem.

We measured how loud pickleball is.

We may have forgotten to measure why it bothers us.

A decibel meter can tell us how much sound reaches a home.

It cannot tell us what that sound feels like once it gets there.

That distinction matters.

People don’t experience noise as a spreadsheet.

They experience it as interruption.

Think about fingernails scraping across a chalkboard.

Now think about the door of a well-built luxury car closing.

Neither sound is silent.

Most people would gladly hear one a hundred times before hearing the other ten.

Why?

Because our ears don’t simply measure volume.

They experience character.

Traditional pickleball paddles often produce a sharp, high-frequency crack.

Not once.

Hundreds of times.

Sometimes thousands over the course of a busy day.

To the player, it becomes part of the rhythm of the game.

To the neighbor sitting on a patio, it can become the rhythm of the afternoon.

That may explain why conversations focused exclusively on decibels have struggled to resolve the conflict.

This isn’t just about making pickleball quieter.

It’s about making it easier to live beside.

That’s a different question.

And different questions usually produce different solutions.

By now you may be thinking:

“That’s great for the next community.”

“What about the ones already living with this?”

That’s the right question.

Because the goal isn’t to win an argument.

The goal is to restore peace.

Fortunately, physics doesn’t care whether a court was built yesterday or ten years ago.

It follows the same rules either way.

Which means the same science that can prevent tomorrow’s conflict can also reduce today’s.

No, there isn’t a magic solution.

There is something better.

A series of practical ones.

Each removes a little friction.

Each lowers the temperature.

Each moves a community one step closer to peace.

The first place to look isn’t the paddle.

It’s the path.

Sound travels.

If you interrupt that journey before it reaches the nearest patio or bedroom window, you’ve already changed the conversation.

Thoughtful landscaping.

Reasonable hours of play.

Each improvement may seem modest on its own.

Together, they begin changing what neighbors experience.

Complex problems are usually solved exactly this way.

Not with one giant leap.

With a series of intelligent decisions all pointing in the same direction.

One of the most overlooked tools may also be the least visible.

An acoustic study.

Most people think of it as another report.

Another consultant.

Another expense.

I see something different.

An acoustic study isn’t a permit.

It’s a glimpse into the future.

It lets a community hear tomorrow before it pours concrete today.

A proper study can model distance, orientation, elevation, court activity, and the way sound reflects through a neighborhood.

It doesn’t eliminate disagreement.

It eliminates unnecessary surprise.

And surprise is often where conflict begins.

A board approves a conversion expecting recreation.

A homeowner opens a window and hears something entirely different.

The courts become wildly successful.

The success exposes a problem nobody anticipated.

By then, the concrete is down.

The players are invested.

The neighbors are frustrated.

Every solution has become more expensive.

Communities rarely fail because they ask too many questions.

They fail because they ask them too late.

Good planning is the art of discovering problems while they’re still inexpensive.

By now, the lawsuits make more sense.

So do the recalls.

So do the angry meetings.

They were never really fighting over a game.

They were fighting over a shared environment.

For years, everyone searched for someone to blame.

The players.

The neighbors.

The board.

The developer.

Reality never picked a side.

Reality just kept operating.

Physics doesn’t care who won the vote.

It doesn’t care who filed the lawsuit.

It simply follows the same rules every single day.

Once you understand that, the conversation changes.

Communities stop asking,

“Whose fault is this?”

They begin asking,

“What can we change?”

That question is remarkably hopeful.

Because physics can be measured.

It can be modeled.

It can be interrupted.

It can be respected.

And when it is...

Players don’t have to lose.

Neighbors don’t have to lose.

Boards don’t have to lose.

The best solutions rarely produce winners and losers.

They reduce conflict for everyone.

The goal isn’t silence.

It’s peace.

During COVID, I kept seeing the same woman at the tennis courts.

She wasn’t playing matches.

At some point I walked over and invited her to one of my classes.

She showed up.

A few months later she met a man in that group.

Years later he proposed on the same court where they met.

I attended their wedding in Mexico.

Today they’re expecting a baby.

Nobody gets married because of a better backhand.

For years I told that story as a tennis story.

Now I think it’s about something else entirely.

It forced me to ask a question I had somehow avoided for most of my career:

What business was I actually in?

Not what did I sell.

What did people actually buy?

A few weeks ago I spent an evening reading old Google reviews from Backhand City.

I expected comments about coaching.

Better serves.

Better volleys.

Better footwork.

Instead I found something else.

One player thanked me for understanding how they learned.

Another talked about meeting friends through class and spending time with them outside of tennis.

Another mentioned being connected with the right group.

Another described going from complete beginner to confident competitor.

The details were different.

The message wasn’t.

Every review was saying the same thing.

I just wasn’t reading them closely enough.

People weren’t thanking me for tennis.

They were thanking me for recognition.

At first that sounded too simple.

Then I started thinking about the people who changed my own life.

A teacher.

A coach.

A mentor.

A friend.

None of them handed me a new identity.

They simply saw one before I did.

Recognition is one of those things you don’t think about until it’s missing.

Most people can remember the teacher who believed in them.

The coach who gave them confidence.

The boss who gave them a chance.

The friend who invited them into a group.

Not because those people gave them information.

Because those people made them visible.

I think we’ve misunderstood community.

Community isn’t the starting point.

Recognition is.

Before people join a community, someone usually notices them.

Invites them.

Welcomes them.

Remembers their name.

Makes room for them.

Community comes later.

Recognition comes first.

Community is what happens after recognition.

That’s why I think loneliness is often misunderstood.

Most people assume lonely people need more people.

I’m not sure that’s true.

I think they need more recognition.

People know their name.

Nobody knows them.

That’s a different problem.

For years researchers have documented the decline of civic life.

Fewer clubs.

Fewer organizations.

Fewer places where people gather.

Robert Putnam famously called it Bowling Alone.

His diagnosis made sense.

Americans were becoming disconnected.

Then Mark Zuckerberg happened.

The internet didn’t eliminate participation.

It moved it.

Today we belong to Facebook groups, Slack channels, Discord servers, group texts, Reddit communities, and countless digital networks.

We’re connected to more people than Putnam could have imagined.

And yet loneliness remains stubbornly high.

That’s the puzzle.

So the question is not whether loneliness is real.

The question is whether we understand what people are actually missing.

If connection was the cure, we should be thriving.

Instead many people feel invisible while connected to everyone.

I think Putnam identified the symptom.

Recognition identifies the mechanism.

The last twenty-five years taught us something important.

Connection and recognition are not the same thing.

The internet scaled visibility.

It didn’t scale recognition.

Visibility says:

I can see you.

Recognition says:

I understand you.

Visibility says:

I know your name.

Recognition says:

I know your story.

Visibility says:

You appeared in my feed.

Recognition says:

You matter to me.

That’s why loneliness isn’t simply the absence of people.

It’s the absence of recognition.

A person can have five close friends and feel deeply known.

Another can have fifty thousand followers and feel completely invisible.

The variable isn’t connection.

It’s recognition.

People rarely accept guidance from someone who hasn’t first recognized them.

A coach.

A teacher.

A mentor.

A friend.

A writer.

The order matters.

Recognition first.

Advice second.

Stephen Covey built an entire habit around this idea in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”

That may be the deepest rule in coaching, teaching, friendship, and leadership.

People don’t change when they are given information.

They change when they feel understood.

Maybe that’s why certain teachers stay with us for decades.

Maybe that’s why some coaches change lives while others simply teach skills.

Maybe that’s why millions of people listened to Jordan Peterson.

Not because he gave them new rules.

Most of the rules were old.

Responsibility.

Discipline.

Meaning.

Purpose.

What was new was the feeling that someone finally understood what they were struggling with.

Recognition came first.

The advice landed second.

Looking back, I spent years saying I was building community.

I don’t think that’s what I was doing.

I was helping people become visible.

The woman hitting tennis balls alone against a wall wasn’t looking for a community.

She probably wasn’t looking for a husband either.

She was looking for a place where she belonged.

A year ago, it felt like a gold rush.

Every week seemed to bring another announcement.

New courts.

New investors.

New facilities.

New memberships.

The logic appeared simple.

Pickleball is booming.

Build courts.

People will come.

And they did.

So why are some clubs already struggling, looking for buyers, or quietly disappearing?

At first, I assumed the answer was financial.

Too much debt.

Construction costs.

Competition.

Bad locations.

Expensive memberships.

Reasonable explanations.

But the more I looked, the less convinced I became.

If those were the entire answer, why were some clubs thriving under the exact same conditions?

Something wasn’t adding up.

I recently found myself reading hundreds of comments from pickleball players around the country.

Not owners.

Not consultants.

Players.

I expected to find discussions about court availability, membership pricing, and facility quality.

Instead, I kept seeing the same phrases.

Home away from home.

Pickleball family.

Welcoming.

Supportive.

Second home.

Friendly.

Kind.

The comments felt strangely similar.

And eventually I noticed something.

Nobody ever said:

“The EBITDA was fantastic.”

They said things like:

“It felt like home.”

Nobody ever says, “The EBITDA was fantastic.” They say, “It felt like home.”

That stopped me.

Because nobody falls in love with Court 7.

Nobody tells their friends about a reservation system.

Nobody stays because the lighting package exceeded expectations.

Yet people routinely drive past other facilities to play somewhere specific.

Why?

Most owners spend years preparing for opening day.

They solve physical problems.

Permits.

Construction.

Lighting.

Insurance.

HVAC.

Software.

Financing.

Every challenge behaves logically.

Then the doors open.

And every important problem becomes human.

The beginner who never comes back.

The advanced player who quietly leaves.

The clique that forms.

The new member nobody introduces.

The volunteer nobody thanks.

The conflict nobody addresses.

The owner thought the hard part was construction.

The hard part was people.

They prepared for construction. They underestimated human nature.

Then the paradox finally appeared.

The things creating value often show up on the spreadsheet as expenses.

Staff.

Pros.

Programming.

Hospitality.

Leadership.

The easiest thing to cut is payroll.

The hardest thing to replace is culture.

And because one is measurable and the other isn’t, smart operators get fooled.

Not because they’re bad businesspeople.

Because they’re often very good ones.

The spreadsheet shows an expense.

The member experiences something entirely different.

The spreadsheet improved. The business got worse.

The more I thought about it, the more the entire industry started looking different.

Owners think they’re opening one business.

They’re actually opening two.

The first business is obvious.

Build courts.

Sell memberships.

Manage operations.

The second business is harder to see.

It’s the business of making people want to come back tomorrow.

Not because they reserved Court 4.

Because they missed the people.

Because they knew someone would notice if they weren’t there.

Because it became part of their routine.

Part of their identity.

Part of their life.

A facility can be copied.

A culture cannot.

You can spend millions building courts.

You cannot spend millions and automatically buy trust.

Or friendship.

Or belonging.

Those things are earned one interaction at a time.

The clubs that survive won’t necessarily have the best courts.

They’ll have the strongest reasons to stay after the match is over.

Because people don’t just want a place to play.

They want a place that feels like theirs.

And that’s the second business.

The first business builds the courts. The second business gives people a reason to come back tomorrow.

Three new pickleball clubs are opening within a few miles of each other.

Every pickleball club is successful on opening day.

The courts are finished.

The easy part is over.

The grand opening will be packed.

The memberships will come in.

The photos will look great on social media.

Everyone will feel optimistic.

That’s the easy part.

The real competition starts on Tuesday night.

That’s when members decide whether to come back.

That’s when operators discover what business they’re actually in.

Most think they’re in the pickleball business.

Some think they’re in the court business.

Others think they’re in the membership business.

A few think they’re in the technology business.

They’re all asking the same question.

How do we fill the courts?

They’re asking the wrong question.

The question isn’t how to fill the courts.

The question is how to keep filling them.

Week after week.

Month after month.

Year after year.

Courts are purchased. Demand is earned.

Most operators don’t realize this until it’s expensive.

Because courts are visible.

Demand is invisible.

The court shows up on a balance sheet.

The relationship doesn’t.

The trust doesn’t.

The anticipation doesn’t.

The habit doesn’t.

Yet those are often the assets doing the heavy lifting.

When members stop showing up, operators usually blame the market.

The weather.

The economy.

The competition.

Almost anything except the real problem.

They misunderstood what business they were in.

The courts were never the business.

The business was demand creation.

The business was giving people a reason to return.

You can finance courts. You can’t finance demand.

Demand has to be created.

Then recreated.

Again.

And again.

And again.

This is where many operators get into trouble.

They build the facility.

Launch the memberships.

Open the doors.

Then they start looking for places to save money.

The conversation inevitably lands on payroll.

A little less salary.

A little less experience.

A little less investment in staff.

The spreadsheet improved. The business didn’t.

The mistake is understandable.

A court looks like an asset.

Payroll looks like an expense.

One appreciates.

The other depreciates.

At least that’s what the spreadsheet says.

But pickleball clubs aren’t built on spreadsheets.

They’re built on behavior.

They’re built on relationships.

They’re built on the reasons people choose one club over another when they have options.

That’s where the best operators think differently.

They don’t see great staff as payroll.

They see great staff as demand creation.

A great pro isn’t payroll. A great pro is demand creation.

A great pro is marketing.

A great pro is retention.

A great pro is onboarding.

A great pro is customer success.

A great pro creates reasons for people to return.

The operator sees an expense.

The member experiences a reason to stay.

Those are not the same thing.

The clubs that survive understand this.

The ones that struggle usually don’t.

Not because their courts are worse.

Not because their technology is outdated.

Not because their memberships are priced incorrectly.

Because they misunderstood what business they were in.

The operator sees an expense. The member experiences a reason to stay.

Three clubs can open in the same market.

All can have beautiful courts.

All can have memberships.

All can have software.

All can have grand openings planned.

The question isn’t who built the nicest facility.

The question is who built a demand engine.

Because once the novelty wears off, the game changes.

Now members have choices.

Now the market gets efficient.

Now operators discover whether they built a facility or an engine.

You can scale courts. You can’t scale empty courts.

The next few years will tell us.

Some operators built facilities.

Others built demand engines.

Only one of those scales.

The easiest thing to build is a pickleball club.

The hard part is building one people miss when they’re not there.

Nobody likes blaming math.

Math has terrible public relations.

It doesn’t tweet.

It doesn’t go on television.

It doesn’t commit hard fouls or argue with referees.

It doesn’t celebrate after big wins or apologize after ugly losses.

Math simply sits in the corner and waits for everyone else to finish telling stories.

Then it tells the truth.

The Boom

By almost every measurable standard, the WNBA is winning.

Attendance is rising.

Television audiences are growing.

Expansion plans are accelerating.

Franchise valuations are climbing.

Sponsors are paying attention.

Investors are paying attention.

Media companies are paying attention.

For years, the league fought for relevance.

Now it has relevance.

For years, the league fought for visibility.

Now it has visibility.

For years, the league wanted a breakthrough moment.

Now it has one.

And when success finally arrives, everyone naturally wants to talk about the growth.

Very few people want to talk about the dependency hidden inside it.

Because growth feels good.

Dependency does not.

Yet the two often arrive together.

Booms have a strange habit of hiding the very thing that eventually threatens them.

The larger a system becomes, the more important it becomes to understand what is actually driving the growth.

Not the story.

The source.

Not the headlines.

The math.

Because growth can come from many places.

A diversified system is resilient.

A concentrated system is vulnerable.

Which brings us to one of the most important concepts in business.

And one of the least discussed concepts in sports.

The Most Dangerous Number in Sports

Executives have a phrase for it.

Concentration risk.

The term sounds boring.

Most important things do.

Concentration risk simply describes what happens when too much value becomes dependent on one thing.

One customer.

One supplier.

One product.

One employee.

One revenue stream.

One asset.

The larger the percentage becomes, the larger the risk becomes.

Not because the asset is bad.

Because the dependency grows.

Apple worries about it.

Movie studios worry about it.

Technology companies worry about it.

Investment managers worry about it.

Every serious organization worries about it.

Because concentration risk creates leverage.

And leverage changes behavior.

At first, concentration feels wonderful.

One product is outperforming everything else.

One creator is driving all the traffic.

One salesperson is generating all the revenue.

One athlete is attracting all the attention.

The results are undeniable.

The growth feels unstoppable.

The numbers look incredible.

Then someone asks an uncomfortable question.

What happens if something changes?

That is the moment concentration stops feeling like a gift and starts feeling like a responsibility.

The conversation shifts.

Not publicly.

Quietly.

Inside boardrooms.

Inside executive meetings.

Inside strategic planning sessions.

Inside future forecasts.

Because concentration risk isn’t measured by today’s performance.

It’s measured by tomorrow’s dependency.

Every league wants a superstar. No league wants concentration risk.

The challenge isn’t creating a transformational star.

Every league dreams of that.

The challenge comes later.

When the star succeeds.

When the audience grows.

When the numbers become impossible to ignore.

When the concentration becomes visible.

Most discussions about sports happen in the present.

Rivalries.

Injuries.

Standings.

The business world thinks differently.

The business world thinks in future windows.

Future negotiations.

Future contracts.

Future leverage.

Future optionality.

Which brings us to a date that most casual fans have never heard about.

October 2028.

The WNBA’s new media-rights package runs through 2036, but the contracts reportedly include a reset provision after the 2028 season.

That matters.

Because a reset is not a slogan.

It is a business mechanism.

It gives the league and its media partners a chance to revisit the economics if the league’s value keeps rising.

Normally, that would be an important contract detail.

During a period of explosive growth, it becomes something else entirely.

It becomes a countdown.

October 2028 isn’t a date. It’s a countdown.

Executives understand this instinctively.

Investors understand this instinctively.

Agents understand this instinctively.

Because future leverage is still leverage.

In some cases, it is the most powerful leverage of all.

If the league keeps growing, the people selling the product may soon have a chance to reprice the product.

Which means the calculations are already happening.

Not when the date arrives.

The moment everyone knows it is coming.

The calculations don’t begin when the deadline arrives. They begin when everyone knows the deadline is coming.

And once you start looking through that lens, different questions begin to emerge.

Questions that sound less like sports.

And more like business.

How much future value is being created?

Who controls it?

Who captures it?

Who benefits from it?

And perhaps most importantly—

How much of that future value depends on a single person?

That is where the story changes.

That is where the math begins.

And once you see it, it becomes very difficult to look away.

Every league wants a superstar.

No league wants concentration risk.

The distinction becomes much more important when the business has a chance to revisit the math.

And after the 2028 season, it reportedly does.

What happens when the plan breaks?

Pressure doesn’t reveal potential.
It reveals behavior.

The best athletes I’ve ever watched weren’t always the most talented.

They were the hardest to break.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately while watching Major League Pickleball.

Not the shots.

Not the score.

The people.

Tyson McGuffin is a good example.

When things start going sideways, Tyson gets bigger.

Not physically.

Behaviorally.

He communicates more.

Connects more.

Competes harder.

He raises the floor of the people around him.

The same thing shows up in different forms.

Rachel Rohrabacher touches the ball and entire rallies begin bending around her decisions.

Christian Alshon quietly stabilizes chaos.

The best players don’t just make plays.

They make mistakes survivable.

Great players don’t just raise the ceiling.
They raise the floor.

And that’s when something clicked for me.

Maybe we’ve been evaluating athletes backwards.

We start with results.

Then statistics.

Then performance.

Then narrative.

But the story often begins much earlier.

With behavior.

How does someone respond after three straight misses?

How do they treat a struggling partner?

What happens when opponents find the pressure valve?

What happens when certainty disappears?

Those moments rarely appear in the box score.

Yet they often determine the box score.

The invisible layer of sports isn’t talent.

Talent is easy to see.

The invisible layer is behavior.

That’s where trust lives.

That’s where leadership lives.

That’s where pressure lives.

That’s where truth lives.

The ceiling is what a player can become.
The floor is who they are when everything starts falling apart.

Everybody wants a higher ceiling.

Owners want it.

Coaches want it.

Players want it.

Fans want it.

I get it.

Ceilings are exciting.

But championships are often won by something else.

A floor that refuses to collapse.

A partnership that survives adversity.

A player who doesn’t fracture when momentum shifts.

A team that remains itself when the plan dies.

Great players raise the ceiling.

The rare ones raise the floor.

And the more sports I watch, the more convinced I become that we’re looking at the wrong thing.

Not because the visible layer doesn’t matter.

Because it’s the invisible layer that explains it.

The ceiling is potential.

The floor is truth.

“The courts were never the real infrastructure. The professionals were.”

The racquets industry has spent decades trying to “grow the game.”

New courts.
New leagues.
New certifications.
New technology.
New formats.
New initiatives.

Every era arrived with the same promise:

This will grow the game.

And to be fair, many of these initiatives worked.

League tennis transformed club culture.

Cardio Tennis increased participation and utilization.

QuickStart lowered the barrier for kids.

Certification programs professionalized teaching.

Apps and booking systems modernized operations.

The industry evolved.

Then came pickleball.

Not as a small programming addition.

As a complete acceleration of operational demand.

More leagues.
More beginners.
More social play.
More scheduling pressure.
More communication.
More court politics.
More member expectations.

The sport changed faster than the professional structure supporting it.

And underneath all of it, the actual delivery system barely changed.

Because behind every initiative was still the same person:

The teaching professional.

The pro explaining the game.

The pro calming frustrated members.

The pro organizing leagues.

The pro handling politics.

The pro managing personalities.

The pro retaining players.

The pro building culture.

That was always the infrastructure.

Not the courts.

Not the apps.

Not the committees.

The professionals.

That’s the part the industry often misses.

For decades, tennis organizations and clubs focused heavily on:
participation,
facilities,
events,
technology,
and programming.

But far less attention was given to modernizing the structure surrounding the people actually delivering the experience every day.

And while the industry evolved, the expectations placed on professionals evolved even faster.

Today’s racquets professional is no longer just:
feeding balls,
running drills,
and teaching forehands.

The modern pro is now expected to be:
a coach,
an operator,
a communicator,
a marketer,
a content creator,
a retention specialist,
a technology adapter,
a tournament organizer,
and often an unofficial therapist for frustrated members.

All while operating inside compensation structures that in many cases still resemble systems from decades ago.

That gap matters.

Because membership fees increased.

Initiation fees increased.

Court demand increased.

Waitlists exploded.

The value of club access skyrocketed.

Pickleball accelerated all of it.

But payroll often lagged far behind.

Especially for the professionals actually delivering the experience members were paying for.

The expectations of the modern pro evolved faster than the compensation structure surrounding them.

And inflation certainly did not wait.

That’s why a first year pro and a ten year veteran can sometimes earn nearly the same amount inside the same structure.

The industry evolved.

The labor model often did not.

Meanwhile, responsibility kept growing.

Hospitality expectations increased.

Member expectations increased.

Technology expectations increased.

Communication expectations increased.

And pickleball introduced a completely new layer of operational intensity.

Suddenly the same professional was expected to:
manage open play,
understand DUPR,
organize leagues,
navigate court allocation battles,
retain aging tennis players,
onboard beginners,
run social events,
and keep everybody happy at the same time.

The amount of emotional regulation required from professionals increased dramatically.

But many club systems still compensate primarily for:
hours covered,
courts filled,
and lessons taught.

Not necessarily:
retention,
culture,
community,
engagement,
adaptability,
or operational intelligence.

That creates a strange dynamic inside racquet sports.

The people closest to the friction often have the least influence over implementation.

They see the problems first.

They hear:
“We need more beginner pathways.”

“Our communication is fragmented.”

“The schedule is confusing.”

“We need more coaches.”

“We need younger members.”

“We need better court utilization.”

The information already exists inside the building.

But the feedback loop is slow.

Very slow.

Especially at clubs.

A problem appears.

Members complain.

Committees discuss it.

A proposal is written.

The board reviews it.

The season changes.

Momentum fades.

Months later, maybe something happens.

Maybe.

The industry does not have an intelligence problem.

It has a speed problem.

In Wilmington, a pickleball facility filed for bankruptcy.

In Houston, a high-end pickleball and restaurant concept shut down.

And now, Pickleball Country Club — after two and a half years — has closed its doors.

Three different models.

Same outcome.

The Mirage, Updated

In Part I, the Mirage looked like this:

Build courts.
Demand shows up.
Business works.

That assumption is breaking.

Because now we’re seeing something else:

Demand shows up.
The business still doesn’t work.

Wilmington: No Margin for Error

The Wilmington facility followed the modern playbook:

• Build fast

• Brand it

• Fill it

It didn’t last a year.

The runway was short.
The costs were fixed.

Time ran out before the model worked.

Houston: Smarter Idea, Same Pressure

The Houston concept tried to improve the model:

• Courts + restaurant

• Social atmosphere

• Experience-driven

A better version of the idea.

And still:

It couldn’t survive its own cost structure.

Because combining businesses doesn’t reduce risk.

It multiplies it.

This is what that looks like in real time.

Houston Again: Community Wasn’t Enough

Pickleball Country Club lasted longer.

They built:

• a real community

• competitive play

• consistent activity

By all visible measures:

It worked.

And still, they closed.

The business couldn’t keep up with the cost of serving the community.

Full courts don’t fix a broken model.

The Marketplace Trap

There’s another version of the Mirage forming.

Clubs that look full…

…but aren’t actually operating a real business.

They’re operating a marketplace.

• Outside operators run events

• Clubs rent courts

• Activity is high

But the money flows elsewhere.

• Club makes: $500–$1,000

• Operator makes: $25,000

The club provides the stage.
Someone else sells the show.

Clubs competing on access.

• Lower court fees

• Open play as the core product

• Discounting to fill time

If your only advantage is having courts…

You’re already in the race.

Margins compress.
Experience drifts.
The business becomes fragile.

On the other side:

Clubs building something harder to copy.

• Structured programming

• Clear identity

• Consistent experience

They’re not selling court time.

They’re selling clarity, improvement, and belonging.

And those don’t compete on price.

A Note on Franchises

Franchises promise something simple:

Clarity.

A system.
A shortcut.
A way to avoid costly mistakes.

And when they deliver that…

The fee makes sense.

Think about brands like Domino’s or McDonald’s.

They don’t just exist.

They advertise relentlessly.
They stay in front of the customer.
They drive demand to the operator.

That’s the deal.

Pickleball isn’t there yet.

The brands are new.
The behavior isn’t standardized.
The demand is still local.

Even the biggest names don’t operate with that level of brand pressure.

They’re not flooding the market with demand.

They’re selling the idea of a system…
not the certainty of one.

And that matters.

Because without strong, proven demand generation…

The value shifts back to the operator.

They still have to figure out:

• programming

• community

• retention

Which leads to a simple question:

What exactly are you paying for?

If the system doesn’t create demand…
and doesn’t reduce mistakes…

it’s not a fee.

The Opportunity

This is the part worth paying attention to.

The Mirage doesn’t mean pickleball is broken.

It means the easy version is.

You want them to believe there’s a real player underneath it.

The problem is…

aside from those numerals…

and you buying the reset online

your game isn’t very clear.

You hesitate.
You hold the ball a beat too long.
You wait for something to feel obvious.

Under pressure, you don’t simplify.

You don’t recognize the moment.

You don’t decide.

You react.

You hope.

And the only reason anyone believes there’s something there…

is because of that decimal point.

Move it one way or the other…

and everything changes.

Take the figures away…

and now we’re just watching your decisions.
