Sunscreen isn’t part of the routine. It’s the reason the rest of the routine works.

I say this as someone who spent years treating SPF like a beach accessory. Something you dig out of a drawer in May and forget exists by September. That was a mistake, and it was an expensive one, because the sun doesn’t take the winter off and neither does the damage.

This Substack is reader-supported. It’s cumulative UV exposure. Not “one bad sunburn in 2011” exposure. Daily, low-grade, didn’t-even-notice-it exposure, through your car window, through your office window, through the clouds.

UVA rays age you. UVB rays burn you. Both travel through cloud cover, and UVA specifically travels through glass, which means the drive to pick up your kid or your commute to work is quietly contributing to the state of your face in ten years. The American Academy of Dermatology puts it bluntly: about 80% of the sun’s damaging UV radiation still reaches you on an overcast day. There is no such thing as an off day.

And the numbers on why this matters long-term aren’t subtle. Roughly one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays when it’s applied correctly and “correctly” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, because most people apply somewhere between a fifth and half of what’s actually needed for that number to hold. That’s the real argument for buying a sunscreen you’ll actually reach for every single day, generously, without negotiating with yourself about it.

This isn’t a vanity argument dressed up as a health argument. It’s both, at the same time, and you don’t have to pick one to justify the habit.

What Daily Actually Buys You

A one-year clinical study on daily broad-spectrum facial sunscreen use found measurable, visible improvement in photoaging, not just “no new damage,” but actual improvement, from consistency alone. No lasers, no procedures. Just showing up every morning.

That’s the whole pitch. Sunscreen is the only skincare product that’s simultaneously prevention and treatment. Everything else in your routine is trying to undo or soften what the sun already did. Sunscreen is the one product stopping it from happening in the first place.

The Top 5 Face Sunscreens Worth Actually Using

A sunscreen only works if you’ll tolerate it enough to wear it every day, so this list isn’t “highest SPF wins.” It’s finish, feel, and whether it plays nice under makeup because the best sunscreen is the one that doesn’t end up back in the drawer by June.

1. d’Alba Piedmont Waterfull Tone-Up Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++<a Vintage western pieces styled just right for the feed. A caption that sounds like I’ve got it together. A business with a name people are starting to recognize, Vault No. 5, built from nothing but an eye for good fashion and a refusal to quit. And under all of it, two toddlers who need me, a divorce that tried to take me apart, and a version of “busy” that most people don’t actually understand until they’ve lived inside it.

I want to talk about what this actually costs. Not in a woe-is-me way, I’m not looking for anyone to feel sorry for me. I’m one of the lucky ones, and I know it. But I think there’s a real gap between what people see when they scroll past a small business account run by a single mom, and what it actually takes to keep that thing alive while also keeping two small humans alive, fed, loved, and steady. I’m doing three, and none of them clock out. I teach fitness classes, which means my body is the product, I show up and perform, tired or not, sore or not, because a room full of people is waiting on me to bring the energy. I do social media marketing for other people’s businesses, which means someone else’s deadlines live in my phone alongside my own. And then there’s Vault No. 5, my own business, which doesn’t pause for any of that… sourcing trips, listing photos, packaging, customer messages, the actual selling. Every one of those things wants to be the priority. Only one of them can be, at any given hour.

Layer two toddlers on top of that, and you stop thinking about your day in hours. You think about it in windows. Nap time is not rest. Nap time is when I edit photos or answer a backlog of DMs or return client emails, moving as fast as I can because I know exactly when that window closes. Bedtime isn’t the end of my day, it’s the start of my second one. I’ve built an entire business in the after-hours of parenting, in the cracks between snack requests and diaper changes and the fortieth rewatch of the same show, because those cracks are what I have.

People ask how I “balance it all,” and the truthful answer is that I don’t, not really, not in the calm, candle-lit way that word implies. What I do is triage. I decide, constantly, what absolutely has to happen today and what can wait, and I’ve gotten ruthless about protecting the things that can’t wait, which are almost always my kids.

This Substack is reader-supported. It was high-conflict. It was the kind of experience that reorganizes you from the inside makes you sharper about what you’ll tolerate, and a lot more protective of your peace and your time. When you go through something like that, especially with kids in the middle of it, you come out the other side needing structure the way other people need air. Structure became my safety net.

Having my kids most of the time means the scheduling isn’t optional, it’s load-bearing. Every appointment, every class I teach, every client call, every sourcing run for the business gets slotted in around drop-offs, pickups, meals, and the version of consistency my kids need to feel secure, especially after everything they’ve already lived through with the divorce. I plan my weeks the way some people plan a business quarter. I have to know, days in advance, exactly when I’m working out logistics for someone else’s product launch versus when I’m at the park pushing a swing. There’s very little room for spontaneity in my life right now, and I’ve made peace with that, because the alternative is chaos landing on two kids who’ve already had enough of it.

What it costs me specifically is the stuff that used to be automatic… sleep, downtime, the mental space to just sit and not be solving something. I don’t get a lot of that right now. I sacrifice a full night’s sleep more often than I’d like to admit. I sacrifice the version of self-care that looks like doing nothing, because “nothing” isn’t really available to me most days. I sacrifice spontaneity, last-minute plans, the ability to say yes to things on impulse. Some weeks I sacrifice patience I wish I had more of, and I have to actively work to get it back before my kids notice it’s gone.

Why I’m doing it anyway

Here’s the part I need to be clear about: none of this is a complaint about my kids, or even really about the workload. It’s a complaint about how invisible the cost of all this can be if you’re not the one living it. Because from where I stand, every sacrifice is in service of something specific, I want my kids to have a life they deserve. Not a life of things, necessarily, though I want them to be comfortable. A life where their mother is stable, present, and building something real, so that one day they look back and see a woman who didn’t fall apart when things got hard. She got organized, got resourceful, and built anyway.

That’s what Vault No. 5 actually is to me, underneath the vintage western pieces and the resell listings. It’s proof. It’s a business I built with one of my closest friends while rebuilding a life, during a season when a lot of people would have understandably just tried to survive. Every piece I source, every order I pack, every post I write for the brand is happening in stolen time, squeezed between clients, between classes, between two kids who have no idea their mom is running an entire operation out of nap times and late nights. than almost anything else in this post: I am a present mother. An active one. This isn’t a story about a mom who’s checked out, running a business from a laptop while her kids raise themselves in front of a screen. I am on the floor with them. I am at the park. I am the one who shows up to pickup, who reads the same book four times in a row because they asked, who knows their little routines and rhythms because I’m the one living them every single day.

The way I make that true, while also running a business and teaching classes and managing other people’s social media, is by being fanatical about when work happens and when it doesn’t. When I’m with my kids, I try hard to actually be with them, not half-present with a phone in my hand, thinking about a caption I haven’t finished. That boundary is honestly one of the hardest things I’ve built, harder in some ways than the business itself, because work will always try to bleed into everything if you let it. I don’t let it. Not during our time.

So when I say this costs me something, I mean it costs me sleep, ease, spontaneity, and a lot of what used to be “free time.” What it hasn’t cost me, and what I refuse to let it cost me, is being the mother my kids need. If anything, going through the divorce and building this business at the same time taught me how to protect that above everything else. Everything else gets scheduled around it, sacrificed for it, rebuilt around it when it breaks.

I don’t know if this is inspiring or just honest. Probably just honest. But if you’re a mom out here running a business, working a job or three, holding your kids together through something hard, and wondering if anyone sees what it actually takes, I see it. I’m living it right alongside you, one nap-time deadline and one bedtime story at a time.

This Substack is reader-supported. The person in your comments talking shit about you right now? They’re on payroll. Your payroll. They don’t know it, they’ll never say it, but every time they type your name with that much anger behind it, they just clocked in for a shift you don’t pay for. And you’re the one who cashes out. Okay?

I need you to really sit with that, because once it clicks, it changes how you move through everything.

The Math Nobody Tells You

Platforms don’t care if it’s love. They care if it’s activity. A comment is a comment whether somebody’s typing “this changed my life” or “this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.” A share is a share whether your girl’s tagging you saying “you need to see this” or somebody who can’t stand you is tagging their friend saying “can you believe her.” The algorithm isn’t reading tone. It’s reading movement.

So when somebody stops scrolling, really stops, gets heated, types out three paragraphs, screenshots you to send to the group chat, they just told the whole platform “show more people this.” That’s it. That’s the entire mechanism. Their anger is a signal, and the signal says amplify.

You didn’t ask for that. You didn’t beg for that. They gave it to you for free, because you got under their skin enough that they couldn’t keep scrolling. That’s not a loss. That’s the most expensive kind of marketing that exists, and you didn’t pay one dollar for it.

Let’s Talk About the Mean Girls

Now let’s be real about who we’re actually talking about, because it’s not some faceless “they.” It’s mostly women. I said what I said. The ops, the ones who live in your comments, who screenshot everything you post, who somehow know your posting schedule better than your own team does, that’s usually a woman. And no, nobody likes a mean girl. Nobody’s out here rooting for her. But mean girls make us money. Period.

Think about it. An employee you pay watches your business because it’s her job. A mean girl watches you for free, around the clock, unprompted, because something about you is living rent-free in her head and she can’t evict it. She’s not doing it for you. She’s doing it because she can’t help herself. And while she’s over there building you a whole shrine made out of resentment, you should be over here building your bank account off the traffic she’s sending your way.

Every stitch. Every “let her cook” post she made to be cute with you. Every reaction video somebody filmed just to drag you. That’s distribution. That’s reach you didn’t have to build yourself, and she signed her own name to it.

Stop Taking It Personal, Start Reading It As Data

This is where you gotta make a decision, because none of this works if you just feel a way about it and move on with your day.

If a certain topic, a certain look, a certain thing you said gets people foaming at the mouth, that’s information. That’s you finding out what actually moves people, and that’s worth more than a hundred posts that get polite silence. Silence doesn’t pay you. Reaction pays you. Once you know what sets people off, you’re not a bystander in your own controversy anymore. You’re running it.

And don’t argue back. The second you hop in the comments defending yourself, you left the position of power and got in the ring with somebody who has nothing to lose. Let the discourse do the work for you. You don’t have to respond to every check that’s being written in your name — you just have to stay visible enough that the checks keep coming.

This Doesn’t Just Work Online

Here’s the part people miss. This isn’t only a phone thing. It works in real life too. It works in the room. It works in the situation.

The more your name gets brought up at work, in a friend group, in your industry, anywhere, the more people know who you are. The more they’re gonna look at you. The more they’re gonna go home that night and look you up. Somebody arguing about you at a dinner table is doing the exact same thing as somebody arguing about you in your comments, they’re putting your name in rooms you’re not even standing in. And that’s free advertising for whatever you’ve got going. Your business, your job, your brand, whatever it is. It doesn’t matter what room it’s happening in. Attention is attention.

So the move isn’t to get upset when your name comes up messy. The move is to use it. Every single time.

Okay, so that’s the mindset. That’s the background you needed before any of this makes sense. But mindset alone doesn’t put money in your account. Somewhere between “I understand this” and “I actually saw the deposit hit,” there’s a real, repeatable process, how the views become checks, how the noise becomes deals, how the talking becomes word-of-mouth that sells for you while you’re asleep. That’s what I want to walk you through next, in detail.

This is the part I actually get paid to know, so pay attention. Three lanes. Views, deals, word-of-mouth. Here’s exactly how each one turns into a check.

How the Views Actually Turn Into Money

Attention is inventory, and inventory sells. Every platform with a creator fund or ad-share program pays you on volume, and controversy is the cheapest way to buy volume you didn’t have to build with a whole content calendar. A post that gets ratio’d doesn’t just get comments. It gets completion rate, rewatches, saves-to-argue-later, and shares into group chats that never would’ve seen you otherwise. Here’s what to actually do with that:

Pull your last 90 days of payouts or insights and sort by earnings, not by likes. Circle whichever post got the most negative comments. Nine times out of ten, that’s your top earner. That tells you what to make more of.

Stop deleting the messy post. Deleting it kills the algorithm run before it’s finished paying you. Let it ride at least 48–72 hours before you touch it.

When you see a comment section going left, post a follow-up within the hour, a stitch, a duet, a part two. You’re not chasing the drama, you’re extending the payout window on it.

If a platform has a bonus or fund program, check the payout dashboard the day after a big wave of hate. That’s usually your biggest single-day number of the month. Screenshot it. That’s your proof for lane two.

How the Noise Turns Into Deals

Brands don’t sign quiet accounts. They sign accounts that move numbers, and “moves numbers” includes negative engagement, because the media buyer isn’t reading your comments for vibes. They’re reading your analytics for reach. Here’s the actual move:

Every time you get a wave of hate, screenshot the reach spike, the follower bump, and the comment count within 24 hours, before it settles back down. Keep a folder. That folder is your pitch deck now.

When you reach out to a brand, or a brand reaches out to you, don’t lead with “everybody loves me.” Lead with “here’s what my reach looked like the week people had opinions about me.” Attach the screenshots. Numbers close deals, not personality.

Ask for a rate based on your highest-reach week, not your average week. If a brand’s paying for reach, pay yourself for the week you actually had the most of it.

Polarizing creators get paid more per post than agreeable ones, consistently, because a beloved audience watches and a reactive audience clicks, buys, and argues about the product too. Say that sentence, almost word for word, in your next pitch email.

How the Talking Turns Into Sales

This one’s the slowest burn and the most valuable. Every mean girl arguing about you in a group chat, every “did you see what she said” at brunch, every “I don’t even like her but...” is doing something a paid ad could never do… she’s making you the topic of a conversation you’re not even in the room for. That’s earned attention, and it converts better than anything you pay for, because the person hearing your name trusts their friend’s opinion more than they’ll ever trust an ad. Here’s how you actually catch that money:

Keep your link in bio current, always, not just when you remember. That link is the net. If it’s broken or outdated when the curious ones show up, you just lost the sale the mean girls already paid for.

Have one clear, always-live offer. Not “link in bio for more info” an actual thing they can buy, book, or subscribe to in under 10 seconds. Word-of-mouth traffic doesn’t wait around while you figure out your funnel.

Set up an auto-reply or pinned comment that catches spikes in DMs or comments, something as simple as “here’s exactly what I do / where to find me.” You will not personally answer everyone who shows up curious after a group chat argument, so make sure something does it for you.

Track where your best customers or clients actually heard about you. If “someone was talking about you” keeps showing up in that answer, that’s confirmation the mean girls are your highest-converting sales channel. Lean all the way into it instead of being embarrassed by it.

The Real Flip

The people who talk about you the loudest, online or in the room, are the ones who can’t leave you alone the longest. That’s not an insult you need to absorb. That’s a metric you get to use. Every time somebody spends their energy trying to tear you down, whether it’s in your comments or at a table you’re not even sitting at, they’re handing you their audience, their reach, and their credibility for free, because you live in their head and they moved in without asking.

You didn’t put yourself there. They chose that.

So let them stay. Let them scroll, let them screenshot, let them talk at dinner. Every second they spend on your name is a second they’ve decided you’re worth their time, and time, attention, and reach are the only currency that’s actually real here. They think they’re exposing you. What they’re really doing is funding you.

Stop flinching at the noise. Start reading it as a receipt.

What Nobody Tells You About Escaping a Trauma Bond

I was married for four years.

Brianna Workman

I was married for four years. And the truth is, there are so many ways to do it. But before you chase any of them, you have to get your affairs in order. That’s what Part 1 is about… the foundation. Do this stuff first, and everything else gets easier.

1. Fix your profile first

When someone lands on your profile, what do they actually see? Read your bio like a stranger would. Does it reflect who you are? Does it reflect the kind of content you post? People decide in seconds whether to follow you, so make it obvious. When they reach your profile, they should immediately know what they’re looking at and what they’ll get if they stick around. Make yourself easy to understand.

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

2. Get a dedicated email for collaborations

This is one I struggled with too, and fixing it helped me stop missing opportunities. Do not run your partnerships through the same email you’ve used for everything since high school. Set up a separate inbox just for collabs and brand deals. It keeps you organized, it looks professional, and it makes sure a real opportunity never gets buried under everything else in your personal inbox. So many people skip this, and it costs them.

3. Have a plan: know your four content pillars

You need to know what your four content pillars are, and you need to actually post within them. Yes, there will be times you post a fun “fluff” piece to pull in traffic and grow your following. That’s fine, that’s part of the game. But the real goal is trust. You want people to feel like they know you, not like they stumbled onto some random account posting random things. Consistency inside your pillars is what turns a viewer into someone who trusts you enough to buy what you recommend.

4. Give people one place to go: your link in bio

Once someone likes your content, don’t make them dig. You need a single link in your bio that leads to everything… your other platforms, your offers, your freebies, whatever matters. A clean link-in-bio hub (Linktree, Stan, Beacons, your own page) turns attention into action. Attention is worthless if there’s nowhere for it to go.

5. Post consistently and show up

You can’t build trust with people who forget you exist. Pick a cadence you can actually keep (it doesn’t have to be every day) and stick to it. The algorithm rewards consistency, but more importantly, your audience does. Showing up regularly is what makes people feel like they know you.

6. Engage back — this is a relationship, not a billboard

Reply to comments. Answer your DMs. Talk to the people who talk to you. So many creators broadcast and then disappear. The ones who build a loyal, buying audience treat it like a two-way relationship. When people feel seen by you, they stick around and that loyalty is exactly what you’ll monetize later.

7. Have your media kit ready before you need it

When a brand finally reaches out, you don’t want to scramble. Put together a simple media kit now: who you are, your audience, your numbers, past collabs, and how to work with you. Having it ready makes you look professional and lets you respond fast and speed wins deals.

Get these seven things in order first. This is the setup that makes everything else possible. In Part 2, I’ll get into the actual ways to turn all of this into income.

This Substack is reader-supported. The word gets an eye-roll now. It’s been slapped on so many pastel graphics that people forget there’s something real underneath it. So let me pull it out of the vision-board aesthetic and put it back in your hands, where it belongs. Because here’s the truth I keep coming back to: you don’t attract what you want. You attract what you focus on. And most of us are focusing on all the wrong things without even realizing it.

Your brain is a bouncer, and you’re the one at the door telling it who to let in

Let me give you the part that made it click for me.

There’s a bundle of neurons in your brainstem called the reticular activating system — the RAS. Think of it as the bouncer of your mind. Your brain takes in something like 11 million bits of information every second, but you can only consciously handle around 40 to 50 of them. So the RAS decides what makes the cut. It filters out the noise and only lets in what you’ve told it matters.

Here’s the wild part: YOU program the bouncer. Whatever you decide is important, your brain starts finding it everywhere. It’s why the second you fall in love with a car, you suddenly see that car on every street. Nothing changed out there. What changed is what your mind was told to look for.

So when you walk around focused on lack, on the thing that went wrong, on the person who hurt you, your brain goes and collects more of that. Not because the universe is punishing you. Because you handed your bouncer a photo and said “let this one in.” And it will. Every time.

Now flip it. When you decide to focus on possibility, on what you’re building, on the version of your life that feels good, your brain starts pulling those opportunities out of the noise for you. The doors, the people, the small openings that were always there. You start seeing them.

That’s the real magic of manifestation. It’s not woo. It’s attention. And attention is a muscle you get to train.

Positivity isn’t a personality. It’s a rewiring.

Here’s what I need you to really hear, because it’s the thing that gives me so much hope: your brain is not set in stone.

For a long time scientists thought the brain got fixed sometime in childhood and that was that. Turns out that’s completely wrong. Your brain is plastic, it keeps rewiring itself your whole life based on what you repeat. It’s called neuroplasticity, and it means every thought you think is casting a vote for the kind of brain you’re building.

Every positive thought reinforces a neural pathway. Do it enough and that pathway becomes the default, the road your mind takes automatically. Researchers have watched this happen on brain scans: consistent practices like gratitude, compassion, and mindfulness create measurable, structural changes in the brain in as little as eight weeks. Eight weeks. That’s a season.

So when I tell you a positive mindset can change your life, I’m not being soft. I’m telling you that you are, quite literally, building the brain you’re going to live inside of tomorrow. Choose the thoughts you’d want to live in.

The part nobody talks about: what you keep talking about, you keep alive

Okay. This is the piece I most wanted to give you, because it changed how I move through hard things.

When something bad happens, the instinct is to grab it, hold it up to the light, and tell everyone. You replay it in your head. You text three friends. You bring it up at dinner. You let it live rent-free in every conversation.

And I understand it, it feels like processing. But there’s a difference between processing something and feeding it.

Subscribe now

Psychologists have a word for the loop: rumination. And the research is honestly a little sobering. Every time you run back through the same painful story, you strengthen the neural pathway that makes the next replay more automatic. You’re not releasing it. You’re rehearsing it. You’re teaching your brain to make that road the highway.

It gets even more real when we do it out loud with other people. There’s a specific thing called co-rumination (hashing out a problem over and over with someone without ever moving toward anything new). Studies have found it can actually keep you stuck and even raise your body’s stress response. So the very thing we do to feel better: venting, rehashing, giving it airtime, can quietly keep the wound open.

So here’s what I’ve come to believe, and what I practice now: when something bad happens, I don’t build it a home. I don’t decorate it. I don’t invite it to stay for dinner and introduce it to all my friends.

Because whatever you give your focus and your voice to, you keep alive in your circle. You keep that person, that thing, that experience relevant. You keep the door propped open for it to walk back in. And when you stop feeding it, stop the replays, stop the group-chat retellings, stop letting it be the main character… it loses its oxygen. It gets smaller. It stops finding its way back to you.

That’s not denial. Denial is pretending something didn’t hurt. This is something different. This is feeling it, learning what it came to teach you, and then refusing to keep it on the guest list.

So here’s my invitation to you

Guard your focus like it’s the most valuable thing you own, because it is. It’s the setting on the filter that decides what your whole life looks like.

Talk about what you’re building more than what broke you. Give your good things the airtime. Let the hard things be felt and then let them get quiet. Watch who and what you keep repeating, out loud and in your own head, because you are casting votes every single day for the life that shows up.

You are not at the mercy of what happens to you. You are the bouncer. You decide who gets in.

Choose beautifully.

Easy Ways To Make Easy Money

(That Won't Turn You Into A Person You Hate)

Brianna Workman

Let me set expectations before we get emotionally invested in each other. This is not one of those posts where a stranger promises you’ll quit your job by Friday and be sipping something expensive on a yacht by Sunday. If that’s what you clicked for, I love you, but go log off.

This is about extra money. The nice-to-have kind. The kind that covers your iced coffee habit, or a flight, or the thing in your cart you keep pretending you’re not going to buy. Some of it can grow into real income if you actually feed it. But mostly we’re here for a little breathing room, earned from your couch, in a way that doesn’t require you to become someone with a whiteboard and a five-year plan.

The goal is what I’ve decided to call the soft-life side hustle. You keep the soft life. You just quietly fund it. Let’s get into it.

1. Start a Substack and Get Paid to Have Opinions

Yes, I know, very meta of me to pitch you on Substack from a Substack. But hear me out, because this one is my favorite, and not just because you’re reading it.

The whole idea is simple. You write about something. People who enjoy it subscribe for free. Some of those people eventually like it enough that they’ll pay a few dollars a month to keep reading, or to get the extra stuff you keep behind a little paywall. That paid part is where the passive-ish income lives. You write it once. People pay for it on repeat. You are not clocking in.

Here’s the part that made me actually do it. You can do this from anywhere. Your kitchen table, a coffee shop where you nurse one drink for three hours like a menace, a beach chair with sand getting into places sand should not be. Nobody knows and nobody cares. The work is the words. The words travel with you.

A few things I’d tell a friend before she starts:

- Pick a lane you’d talk about for free. Because for a while, you will be. Whether it’s budgeting, breakups, houseplants you keep killing, or restaurant reviews of places in your neighborhood, the topic needs to be something you won’t get bored of by week three.

- Post before you feel ready. You will never feel ready. Ready is a myth invented by people who don’t publish.

- Keep the free stuff genuinely good. The free posts are the sample tray at the grocery store. If the sample is sad, nobody’s buying the block of cheese.

- Turn on paid subscriptions early, even if it feels silly. A few dollars from a few people who like you is a real thing. It adds up quieter than you’d expect.

Will you get rich? Probably not this month. But there’s something a little addictive about waking up to a notification that someone, somewhere, paid to hear what you think. It’s a nice feeling. It also pays for lunch.

2. Sell the Stuff You’re Currently Storing for No Reason

Okay. Deep breath. We need to talk about your closet. And your garage. And that drawer. You know the one.

We all have piles of perfectly good things we are simply... keeping. For who? For what? For the version of us who was going to wear those jeans again? She’s not coming. Let her go, and let her make you forty bucks on the way out.

This is the fastest money on this whole list because you already own the inventory. It’s just sitting there being furniture. The move is to photograph it, list it, and let someone else fall in love with your mistakes.

Where to list what:

- Poshmark for clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s social and a little chaotic in a fun way, and buyers there actually want to shop, not just haggle you into the ground.

- Depop if your stuff skews cute, vintage, trendy, or Gen-Z coded. That crowd will pay real money for the exact windbreaker you were about to donate.

- eBay for basically everything else. Electronics, collectibles, random household things, the weirdly specific item that has one very devoted buyer out there somewhere. eBay finds that person.

Two small tips that make a real difference. Take the photo in daylight, near a window, on a plain background, so your sweater doesn’t look like it was photographed inside a cave. And write the listing like a human. What is it, what size, any flaws, why it’s great. People buy from listings that sound like a person and not a ransom note.

The best part is the double win. You make money and your space gets lighter at the same time. It’s a little smug, honestly. I recommend it.

Subscribe now

3. Amazon Affiliate Links, aka Getting Paid for Recommendations You’re Already Making

You already tell people what to buy. You do it for free, constantly, with great confidence. The lamp, the mascara, the kitchen gadget that changed your life. Affiliate links just let Amazon pay you a small cut when someone buys through your recommendation.

Here’s how it works, minus the jargon. You sign up for the Amazon Associates program. You get special links for products. You share those links, and if someone buys, you get a small percentage. The person pays the same price they always would. The money comes out of Amazon’s end, not your friend’s wallet, which is why it doesn’t feel gross to do.

The cleanest way to do this is to build a little storefront, which Amazon lets you set up for free. Think of it as your personal shelf of “here’s what I actually use and like.” Your skincare, your desk setup, your cozy blanket, the specific water bottle you’re weirdly loyal to. Then you drop the storefront link in your Substack, your Instagram bio, your videos, wherever people already ask you “wait, where’d you get that?”

The honest note here: this one works best when you already have people paying attention to you, even a small handful. It pairs beautifully with numbers 1 and 4 on this list. On its own, it’s a slow drip. Layered on top of an audience you’re already building, it’s found money for stuff you were going to mention anyway.

Just recommend things you genuinely like. People can smell a fake endorsement from across the internet, and your credibility is worth more than a $3 commission.

4. Point a Camera at Yourself and Talk

I can feel some of you tensing up. Stay with me.

You do not need to become an influencer. You do not need a ring light, a personality transplant, or a face full of makeup. You need a tripod, your phone, and something to talk about that other people actually want to hear.

That last part is the whole game. The platforms will pay creators based on views once you hit their thresholds, and views come from making something people want to watch. Not something impressive. Something watchable. There’s a difference, and the difference is why regular people talking about oddly specific things go viral while polished corporate content flops.

So prop up the tripod and film yourself doing whatever you’re already doing, as long as it’s useful, funny, comforting, or interesting to someone who isn’t you.

Ideas to steal:

- Teach the one thing you’re weirdly good at. Everyone is an expert in something they think is obvious. It is not obvious to the rest of us.

- Bring people along for something. Cleaning, cooking, organizing, a slow morning, running errands. “Come with me” content is soothing and people eat it up.

- Have an opinion. Reviews, hot takes, “things nobody tells you about X.” Opinions travel.

And here’s the layering trick that ties this whole list together. In those videos, you mention your Amazon storefront. You mention your Substack. You show a product with an affiliate link. Suddenly one video is quietly working three jobs while you sit there being charming. That’s the actual magic. Not any single thing on this list, but all of them holding hands.

Consistency beats quality here, and I say that as someone who deeply resents that it’s true. The person who posts okay videos regularly will out-earn the perfectionist who posts one flawless video a season. Just keep showing up.

The Actual Point

None of this is a get-rich scheme, and if anyone tells you it is, keep your hand on your wallet.

It’s the extra cushion that means you don’t wince when the group chat picks the expensive restaurant.

What I love about all of it is that it fits into the life you already want. No commute. No boss standing over you. No pretending you have a five-year vision when your actual vision extends to “what’s for dinner.” You can do every single one of these from your couch, your favorite coffee shop, or a beach chair, in your softest clothes, on your own schedule.

Pick one. Just one. Do it this week, badly, before you overthink it into the ground. The stuff-selling one is the easiest place to start because you already own everything you need. Then, once you’ve felt the tiny thrill of unexpected money hitting your account, come back and add another.

Soft life, funded. That’s the whole assignment.

Now go sell those jeans. She’s not coming back for them.

The Real Reason Your Face Doesn't Look Like It Used To

(It's Not Just "Getting Older"

Brianna Workman

(Quick disclosure before we get into it: I'm not your doctor, so please don't quote me at your next physical. You blamed “just aging I guess.” But a huge chunk of what’s actually changing your face isn’t age on its own… it’s inflammation, quietly rearranging your skin and the structure underneath it, one low-grade flare at a time.

This Substack is reader-supported. You get a cut, it swells, it heals, done.

Chronic inflammation is the annoying roommate that never leaves: your immune system stays low-grade “on” for months or years, quietly releasing inflammatory chemicals (cytokines, CRP) into your system nonstop. Nothing feels acutely wrong. But nothing is calm either.

And yes, it also affects your body (it’s tangled up in joint pain, weight that won’t budge, and blood sugar issues) and your mood (research now links chronic inflammation to a nearly 2x higher risk of anxiety and depression, since those same inflammatory chemicals can cross into the brain and mess with serotonin and dopamine). Both of those deserve their own conversation. But today I want to zoom all the way in on your face, because it’s the most visible, most ignored part of this whole story.

The Actual Reason Your Face Changes: It’s Structural, Not Just “Wrinkles”

Here’s the thing that finally made this click for me: your face isn’t just skin sitting on top of your skull. It’s layers: skin, fat pads, muscle, and bone all held up by collagen and elastin like scaffolding. Inflammation doesn’t just make your skin look tired. It goes after the scaffolding itself. Here’s how, layer by layer.

1. Collagen and elastin get chewed up from the inside.

Chronic inflammation triggers enzymes (MMPs) that break down collagen and elastin faster than your body can replace them. Less scaffolding means less bounce, more sagging, and fine lines that show up earlier than they “should.”

2. Sugar is literally welding your collagen into cardboard.

This one’s wild: when you eat a lot of sugar, some of it bonds directly to your collagen fibers in a process called glycation, forming compounds called AGEs (advanced glycation end-products). AGEs stiffen collagen, make it less flexible, and give skin that dense, less-supple “cardboard” texture dermatologists talk about.

3. Your face literally loses volume and support underneath.

Facial fat isn’t spread evenly, it sits in specific compartments that, over time, shrink and slide downward, leaving cheeks flatter and creating hollows under the eyes. At the same time, facial bone remodels: you can lose meaningful bone density around the eye sockets, upper jaw, and jawline over the years, which is a huge part of why the same face can look hollow in one decade and heavy-jawed in another. Inflammation and oxidative stress accelerate both processes, since they slow down the cells responsible for rebuilding bone and fat support.

4. Stress puffs you up in a very specific, very visible way.

Ever notice your face looks rounder and puffier during a stressful stretch? That’s “cortisol face”. Elevated cortisol causes your body to retain sodium and fluid (including in your cheeks, jawline, and under your eyes), while also breaking down collagen and shifting fat distribution in the face. It’s not in your head, and it’s not permanent.

5. Your gut is quietly running the show on breakouts and flare-ups.

About 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, and when gut bacteria get out of balance, that inflammation travels straight to your skin via what’s called the gut-skin axis — showing up as acne, rosacea, or eczema flares. This is why “your skin is a reflection of your gut” isn’t just an Instagram caption, it’s an actual immunological pathway.

6. The barrier breaks, which just... makes more inflammation.

A weakened skin barrier lets more irritants in, which triggers more inflammation, which weakens the barrier further. It’s a closed loop, which is exactly why over-exfoliating or over-treating irritated skin usually backfires.

Put it all together and you get the full picture: puffiness, dullness, hollowing, sagging, breakouts, and a jawline that seems to have its own agenda, a lot of it traceable back to inflammation, not just “time passing.”

Ok So What Do We Actually Do About It: The Hot Takes

Here’s where I get opinions. These are the things with real evidence behind them for your face.

Hot take: fix your sleep before you buy a single product.

What it’ll do: lowers inflammatory markers overnight (literally), reduces next-morning puffiness, and gives your skin its actual repair window. This is the highest-leverage, zero-cost thing on this whole list and everyone skips it because it’s not glamorous.

Hot take: your sugar habit is aging your face faster than the sun is.

What it’ll do: cutting back on added sugar slows glycation, which means less collagen stiffening and fewer AGEs feeding the inflammation loop. Do it for a few weeks and people ask if you got something “done.” You didn’t get filler, you got less glycated collagen.

Hot take: stress isn’t just “in your head,” it’s in your jawline.

What it’ll do: managing cortisol (therapy, walks, actual boundaries, breathwork) calms the fluid retention and collagen breakdown behind “cortisol face.” You will not out-skincare a stress-puffed face, you have to address the hormone.

Hot take: cold exposure is the fastest de-puff you’re not using.

What it’ll do: cold triggers a norepinephrine response with real anti-inflammatory effects, and a 2025 meta-analysis of 11 clinical trials confirmed cold exposure measurably lowers inflammatory markers. On your face specifically, that means less puffiness, tighter-looking skin, and a genuine (not just cosmetic) reduction in the swelling driving that “heavy” morning look. You don’t need a cryo chamber, however they do work wonders… an ice roller, a cold splash, or a cold shower finish hits the same pathway, just gentler.

Hot take: red light therapy is the one device actually worth the hype for your face.

What it’ll do: red and near-infrared light (630–850nm) penetrates skin and lowers inflammatory cytokines directly, with research showing up to a 40% reduction in inflammatory markers in chronic skin conditions, plus more collagen production and faster healing. A direct counterattack on the collagen breakdown we just talked about. The at-home panels and masks use the same wavelengths as professional pods, so 10 consistent minutes a night while you scroll actually beats one intense monthly spa session.

Hot take: if you want to feel the full-strength version before buying equipment, go try it once.

What it’ll do: gives you a no-commitment way to test cold and red light before dropping money on a home setup. If you’re in Houston, The Well House Collective on Richmond Ave has a cryo chamber and a red light pod (plus infrared sauna and NAD+/glutathione IV drips) all in one place.

Hot take: glutathione is the antioxidant everyone name-drops but nobody explains.

What it’ll do: it’s your body’s “master antioxidant”. Instead of just cleaning up damage after the fact, it flips the actual switch (NF-kB) that turns inflammatory genes on and off, which matters directly for skin since that same pathway drives the cytokine cascade behind dullness and breakouts. It also recharges vitamin C and E and protects your cells from oxidative stress, which is a big part of what ages collagen.

Hot take: your gut health is a skincare product.

What it’ll do: supporting your gut microbiome (probiotics, fiber, fermented foods, less ultra-processed junk) calms the gut-skin axis directly, which is often the missing piece for stubborn acne, rosacea, or eczema that skincare alone never fully fixes.

Hot take: your skincare routine can help or actively make this worse.

What it’ll do: a barrier-supporting routine (fewer harsh actives, more ceramides and antioxidants) stops your skin from generating its own extra inflammation, and daily SPF matters here specifically because sun damage and this exact inflammatory aging process share the same molecular fingerprint. Over-exfoliating irritated skin is doing the opposite of what you think it’s doing.

(One more time for the people in the back: run any new supplement by your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you’re on blood thinners or other meds. This is friend-advice, not medical advice.)

The Actual Point

Your face isn’t just aging. A lot of what you’re seeing in the mirror is inflammation actively reshaping the scaffolding underneath your skin: collagen, fat pads, even bone. Which sounds scary, but it’s also genuinely good news, because inflammation is one of the few aging factors that actually responds to what you do today. Sleep, sugar, stress, cold, light, gut health… none of it is exotic, all of it is doable, and unlike bone density, it starts showing up in the mirror embarrassingly fast.

Pick one hot take. Just one. Your face is going to notice before you do.

This Substack is reader-supported. So when I tell you these five things are worth your money, understand that I am not a woman who hands out praise for free. I have been disappointed by overpriced avocado toast in three states. If something makes this list, it earned it.

Here’s the deal: Houston will happily let you spend money on things that are fine. Just fine. Forgettable. I’m not here for fine. I’m here to tell you exactly where to put your hard-earned cash so you stop wasting it on mediocrity, and I’m backing it up with the actual receipts. Grab a coffee because we’re going deep on this.

1. LHTX Membership

I will die on this hill. Bury me here. Yes, I work there, and no, that is not why this is number one. It’s number one because I would say this exact thing if you’d never met me and I was just some woman ranting at you in a Target parking lot.

LHTX Fitness isn’t just a gym membership, it’s a whole ecosystem. You’ve got The PowerFormer for reformer Pilates, Bounce & Burn if you want to feel like a kid on a trampoline while also questioning your life choices, and PowerMat for when you want to move to the beat in the heat.

But the real thing that gets me is the community. The instructors actually know your name. They notice when you’re off your game. It doesn’t feel like a transaction, it feels like people who are genuinely invested in you not quitting on yourself. That’s rare. That’s worth paying for.

2. Bacon, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Tacos from Bebidas

I need you to understand I do not make declarations like “best in Houston” lightly. This is a city that treats breakfast tacos as a personality trait, and everyone has an opinion, and everyone is wrong except me.

Bebidas started as a cold-pressed juice and coffee bar, which honestly undersells what’s happening with their food. The bacon, egg, and cheese taco is the kind of thing that makes you sit in your car in the parking lot and eat it before you even get home, no shame, zero regrets. Ask for extra salsa. I am not saying this as a suggestion, I am saying this as a directive. You’re welcome in advance, like I said. I already know how this ends for you.

3. Brazilian Blowout at Extend Houston

Listen, I slept on Brazilian blowouts for embarrassingly long. I thought I was fine. I was not fine. I was a woman living in Houston humidity with untreated hair, which is essentially a self-imposed hostage situation every time I stepped outside.

Extend built their whole brand around making your hair actually blend with your life…extensions, custom color, the kind of finish where every strand looks like it was born that way, not styled that way. Once you combine that kind of work with a Brazilian blowout, you have hair that survives a Houston summer without surrendering by 9am. And my girl Reagan (@reagansmithhair, go follow her on Instagram right now) is the reason I will never let anyone else near my head again. She gets it. She gets me. It’s a whole relationship at this point.

If you’re on the fence about the cost, here’s your sign: the cost of the blowout is nothing compared to the emotional cost of fighting frizz for three months straight. Not a hard call.

4. Fancée Nails

This one’s a hidden gem and I almost don’t want to tell you about it, because the parking is already tight enough as it is. But I care about you more than I care about my own convenience, so here we are.

Fancée is small, it’s intentional, and it feels like it was built by people who actually wanted to be there. The nails come out natural-looking, clean, exactly what you asked for and not some version of it that got lost in translation. The technicians are the best I’ve found in this city, full stop. And the pedicure situation includes a hot stone massage and a collagen foot mask, which is the kind of detail that tells you they’re not just checking a box, they actually want you to leave feeling like a person who has her life together. Even if you don’t. Especially if you don’t.

5. Katami

Just go. I mean that, but I also know you need more than two words to hand over your credit card, so here’s the case.

Katami is run by Chef Hori-San, a five-time James Beard-nominated chef, alongside a team that clearly does not believe in cutting corners. Over 80% of the fish is coming straight from Japan, which is not a small logistical flex, that’s a level of commitment most sushi spots aren’t making. Add in a sake list with more than 75 bottles, some of which you cannot find anywhere else in Texas, and you’ve got a restaurant that’s not trying to be the trendiest room in Houston, it’s trying to be the best plate on your table. It succeeds.

Go for the omakase if you want someone else to make the decisions for you. Go for the a la carte if you, like me, need to be in control at all times. Either way, you’re eating well.

That’s the list. Five things, zero apologies, and a bank account that will thank you later even if it’s mildly confused about it right now. If you try any of these and love them, tell me. If you try any of these and don’t love them, I’d also like to know, mostly so I can explain to you what you did wrong.

More soon. Go treat yourself, you’ve earned it, and if anyone questions the spending, forward them this post.

Let's Get Started...

So happy you're here!

Brianna Workman

Hey y’all,

Welcome, or welcome back. Houston adopted me eight years ago, and somewhere in between the two, I built a whole life: two little humans, two businesses, and a personality that apparently a lot of you want to pay for. Bold of you.

My babies, DJ & Sylvie run the show, whether I like it or not.

By day I’m the girl sweating it out at LHTX in the heated room. By trade I run Rebel Atelier, my digital marketing company, and by whatever you want to call the third thing, I’ve built a social presence out of just being authentic and honest online. Turns out that works.

Then there’s Vault No. 5. The one that actually keeps me up at night, in the good way. Vintage western, luxury pieces, capsule drops, custom designs on the way that I’m dying to show you. Co-founded, obsessed, still pinching myself.

I also hoard information like it's currency, so expect the receipts: beauty hacks, health secrets, who to call in Houston for the treatments and products actually worth your money, and exactly what I do to stay in shape when I'm not teaching class. I don't gatekeep the good stuff.

Here’s the part people don’t expect: I’m also a certified restaurant snob who will drive across town for the right plate, a night-out girl who believes balance means both a morning workout and a good bottle of wine, and under all of it, a woman who’s done a lot of growing to become who’s writing this. That last part’s the real story. I’ll be telling it in pieces here, not all at once, because I’m dramatic like that.

So pull up a chair. This isn’t an interview. It’s a story, and you just walked into chapter one.

This Substack is reader-supported.
