Happy late summer! I hope it’s been a season of flourishing for you, and that some good tea has played a part in that.

First, I’d like to share a small reflection with you.

Last month, I got to take a vacation to the Canadian Rocky Mountains and visited lakes, rivers, and glaciers there. Among other things, I learned that 70% of the world’s freshwater is stored in glaciers, and 20% of the world’s freshwater supply is in Canada. As it turns out, water from various Canadian rivers feed directly into the Great Lakes, which in turn supplies the drinking water for lots of cities around the Midwest — which is where I grew up. Turns out that, even a place as remote from my world as these mountains, a place that was never even on my radar until this summer, I was already connected to. Which brings me back, again, to tea, and to a teaching about tea from Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, in his book How To Eat: “You know that you are drinking a cloud; you are drinking the rain. The tea contains the whole universe.”

How to Visit Our Tea Room

We have some new readers as of late - welcome! - so I thought I’d reintroduce our tea room. We have a small and cozy members-only tea room, uniquely located on the 12th floor of the CIC office building at 245 Main St, Cambridge. (If you’re subscribed to this newsletter, congratulations, you’re already a member! ) Visits are generally Thursdays through Sundays by reservation. Private tables have a $15 reservation fee, while the communal table is free to book (but please cancel or let us know if you’re not able to make your appointment!). If you happen to be walking in the area on Thursdays and Fridays, you’re also welcome to pop in and see if we are open and have any tables available.

We offer 2 types of sit-down tea service (no to-go cups), small pot and gongfu. Small pot is more hands-off and brewed with reverse osmosis-filtered water, while gongfu includes a mini private tasting using special teaware, and is brewed with local spring water. Both options offer unlimited steeps of tea, hence we kindly ask for a minimum order of one tea per person. We have one food option, a traditional tea snack bento box, which includes rotating snacks like chocolates, nuts, dates, and shortbread cookies, which are chosen to complement the flavors of our teas without overpowering them.

Hard to believe it’s been two months since our last newsletter and we’re in a completely different season now! As you read this, I hope you are enjoying a beautiful day, wherever and whenever you may be.

April & May Recap

First up, a quick photo recap of some recent adventures in Taiwan and New Hampshire!

Taiwan

In late April, Jonathan and I took a short but wonderful 4-day trip to Taiwan during the spring tea-making season in the north. We spent most of it with our tea maker friend Mr. Fu and his friends in Pinglin and Taipei, learning about the processing of Tieguanyin (aka Iron Goddess) and Baozhong.

In short, we learned that making these teas is EXTREMELY complicated and requires an unbelievable amount of dedication, physical labor, and intuitive skill. There are numerous steps, the execution of which entirely depends on each tea maker’s judgment, experience, as well as artistic style. If you’d like to take a deep dive with us, we put together a little podcast episode — our second in as many years; it might even become a regular series at this rate…! — about our trip, where we share what we learned about making tieguanyin, as well as talk a bit about how we source and buy teas in general.

New Hampshire

In May, we got to participate for the second time in the Northeast Coffee & Tea Festival in Concord, NH. The weather was much more cooperative than last year, and with part of it being a 22-hour outdoor market across two days, we were very grateful for that! I also got to teach not one but two different tea classes this year. Both seemed to be well-received, and I’m keeping them in mind with an eye towards expanding our classes at the tea room in the future. Speaking of which, by the way, if there are any tea topics that you, dear readers, would be interested in taking a class with us on, we’re always open to suggestions!

Our new 2026 spring harvest teas have begun to roll in! First up, two new Taiwanese oolongs from Mr. Fu and friends: 2026 Orchid Dew Baozhong and 2026 Traditional Milk Oolong. From southern China, we’ve also received the latest vintages of our classic dancong (单枞) oolongs: 2026 Hummingbird’s Dream and 2026 Honey Orchid. All of these teas will age well, but there’s something special about drinking them fresh, right after they’re made.

I’m calling the class “intro” to welcome newcomers, but the class will be adapted to the knowledge and skill level of whoever wants to come brew & learn. Happy March! The days are getting longer, the snow is melting, and the air has been tasting a little sweeter and fresher lately. Spring’s on her way!

Interestingly, there are often parallels between winters here in New England and in the tea mountains of southern China and Taiwan where we source the majority of our teas from. This year, just like us here, those tea regions experienced a more wintry winter - which usually means even better spring teas (if weather conditions around budding and harvest align as well 🤞)! The reason is that a longer, colder winter helps the tea plants to properly slow down and store energy before bursting forth in the spring with extra aromatic and complex-tasting leaves. If that isn’t a book we can all take a page from, I don’t know what is…!

If you’ve been meaning to come visit us in person - in either a low-key or high-key way - this month is a great time. We’ve got a small but stellar set of events and classes lined up!

Friday 3/20: We’re bringing back Tea & Movie Night this month - and this time, with dinner from WeiToGo as well! Each ticket includes your choice of a lu rou fan (pork) or lu wei (vegan kombu and tofu) bento box + screening of Eat Drink Man Woman (Ang Lee, 1994) + hot tea service during the movie. Friday 3/27: Hands-On Intro To Gongfucha is a class I’ve been wanting to teach for a while. There is a technical aspect and a knowledge-based aspect to gongfucha, but also a spiritual & intuitive side to brewing tea which is what makes it a “practice,” a way to continually deepen our understanding of tea and of ourselves. There are several ticket options available, including packages with teaware or tea to take home, plus an early bird discount through 3/13!

Over the past 2 weeks, Broken Cup has gotten a little press! 🙌 On February 17, in the morning, I had the pleasure of talking with WCVB’s The Chronicle (a popular TV program, if you’re out of the loop like I am) at our tea room to hear our story and learn about gongfucha culture (the segment just aired this past Wednesday!). And in the afternoon, I had the privilege of joining Irene Li (!!) on WGBH’s The Curiosity Desk (a very fun radio show) to talk about Lunar New Year and the tradition of tea. Happy February! Hard to believe we’re already in the second month of the year, as I’m still in a reflective mood. One thought I keep coming back to lately is the number four. In Chinese culture, four is not generally regarded as a lucky number, but I beg to differ. As it turns out, BCT is now 4 years old (!), while our tea room just turned 4 months old.

And - we now have a team of 4!!!! It has been the biggest blessing for me to meet these fine humans, all of whom, in addition to loving and supporting BCT, are wonderful artists and creatives in their own right. I could write a lot more about them here, but for now I’ll just say that something I’m really excited about is making BCT a place where each one can share their passions and talents with the greater community. Last year, we hosted writing workshops with Allison and a chabu crafting workshop with Ciana. Please look forward to even more staff-led special events this year!

So that was three already; here’s a fourth auspicious four: this year, for our 2026 Lunar New Year Gift Boxes, we’ve got a whopping 4 options for you to choose from! Friday 2/13: Our first ever Tea & Movie Night! Join us for a cozy vintage screening of Whisper Of The Heart (a 1995 Studio Ghibli classic) with hot tea service and good company. It’s Valentine’s Day Eve, so yes we picked a love story. But it’s not overly romantic; it’s also about music and writing and working hard and chasing your dreams! So either bring a Valentine or simply come and enjoy your own lovely company.

We’re also trying to add more tea classes into our regular rotation! Here is one to kick things off:

Brewing Looseleaf Tea Simply & Intuitively. First date: Friday, 2/20. This class is for anyone ready to move beyond the very specific steeping instructions printed on tea packaging (1 tsp, 185°F, 4 minutes…) and learn how a little knowledge and observation can help you brew any loose leaf tea well. You will learn to read a tea's physical characteristics and brew it with confidence, using only a mug!

New Teas

As BCT’s tea selection grows, I’ve been thinking about how to do it in an intentional way. On the one hand, the economy still doesn’t feel great. So I’m looking harder than ever for more affordable, great-value, bang-for-your buck, interesting teas that still pass our rigorous quality threshold. On the other hand, we want to continue to source and to spotlight the very best teas we can find. So these new additions are a reflection of this dual intention.

1. Hongshui Oolong and Red Jade: 2 new teas from last month’s trip to Taiwan. One is sweet, roasty, and comforting; the other wild and funky. Both on the affordable side, and only available to taste at the tea room for now.

2. Jasmine Green: A stellar version of a classic. Think honeydew and cherry blossoms. And with only 1.5 g needed per mug (with re-steeps), the value on this tea is unbeatable.

3. Champagne Empress: First flush late spring/early summer pick of one bud, two leaves. Soft, graceful, oozing honey.

4. Tropical Lapsang: Top-shelf stuff. Expertly processed to give peach, papaya, and mango notes, with a mineral base. For the past 3 years, I’ve sourced a new fruity-style lapsang every year, and this one is my favorite yet.

Happy fall! I don’t know about you, but fall always feel like such a sentimental season to me. We’ve just released November reservation dates and times! Please note that the tea room will only be open for regular reservations during the first half of the month. For the second half, we’ll be closed for regular reservations due to a tea trip to Taiwan (with side quests for food of course) + Thanksgiving. My good friend Luyao is currently visiting from Jiangsu, China, where her family grows a little tea at their old house in the countryside. Even though she doesn't work in tea herself, I asked her if she'd be willing to share some stories of growing up in a tea-making household. Despite initially feeling shy, she ultimately agreed!

Thank you so much for your patience as we keep working to make the tea room the best that it can be. I’m excited to let you know that we’ll be reopening our doors on Wednesday, September 17 and Thursday, September 18 for the next stage of our soft opening!

Because of our unique location inside an office building, we’re experimenting with finding a format that works best for everyone involved. For the time being, the tea room will be a private, members-only space, available by reservation only. The good news is that becoming a Tea Room Member is simple and free: just sign up for this newsletter, which you’ve already done — so you’re all set! Hours for Wed 9/17 & Thu 9/18:

• 11:00am–5:00pm → book a 1h15 or 1h45 session at the table of your choice

• 6:00pm–8:00pm → book a 2-hour evening session at the table of your choice

Our full menu will be available throughout the day, and I’m excited to share a brand-new addition: 2025 Champagne Empress, a top-shelf, first flush dongmei (東美) style tea that blew me away with its delicate yet rich honey-and-rose sweetness. The producer we usually source Classic Beauty from (our standard-grade dongmei) experienced unusually heavy early-summer rains this year, resulting in a very weak mid-summer harvest. Because this style of tea is bug-bitten, it’s grown more naturally and with fewer interventions (even if not officially certified organic) to attract the tea jassid insects. That natural sensitivity makes it more vulnerable to extreme weather — and this year, the harvest reflected that.

Although we’re unable to offer a standard-grade version of this tea at the moment, for customers looking for a more oxidized and fruity oolong, we’ve been pointing them toward Osmanthus Red, our own in-house blend and roast! And of course, we’re thrilled to introduce the new premium-grade Champagne Empress — available only in the tea room for now, with possible retail release later.

Bookings for our tea room’s Soft Opening Day this Friday, August 22, 11 am to 9 pm, are now open to everyone!! We will be open for one day only (for now), after which we’ll take a short pause to reflect and fine-tune before fully opening very soon.

Because of our unique location inside an office building, all visits are by reservation only; unfortunately we aren’t able to accommodate walk-ins. Over the weekend, our NuMarket crowdfunders got early access and really showed up for reservations (THANK YOU!) — but there are still plenty of time slots and tables left!

• Our regular small tables are almost fully booked; most of the remaining availability is for the floor tables (seats 2-3) and the regular large table (seats 4-6).

It’s been a busy few months at Broken Cup Teahouse — between sourcing new spring harvest teas, keeping up with orders, and preparing the tea room, there’s been no shortage of excitement. I’ve been meaning to share an update for a while, and now there’s so much to tell — so grab a cup and buckle up!

Cambridge Tea Room

We’ve been steadily bringing our tea room to life! All of our furniture is in, most of the lighting is installed, our staff are trained, and the menu is nearly finalized. Here are a few snapshots from our trial run a couple of weeks ago to prove it:

From the way the light falls on the tables to the curve of a teacup in your hand, every part of our design is the result of hundreds of small choices — each one thought about and set into place with intention so that the whole space feels quietly alive. While there are still a few loose ends to tie up, we’re finally ready to welcome our first guests for our Soft Opening Day!

After our soft opening day, we’ll take a little time to reflect, fine-tune, and make improvements before opening our doors full-time… stay tuned!

New Wholesale Partners

Over the past few months, we’ve also welcomed two new local wholesale partners! First up is Gracenote, a Boston-based coffee roastery of the highest tier. With two downtown locations and the hidden treasure that is their Listening Room, you’ll now find a rotating selection of our oolongs at all three.

Next is Darling, the coolest new cocktails + dim sum spot in Cambridge’s Central Square — basically just down the street from us! Find our teas on their menu as an NA option, as well as in the Forbidden City cocktail. ✨

New Teas

I haven’t managed to send out a formal announcement yet, but some of you have already spotted our NEW 2025 spring teas in the online store! As I mentioned in the last newsletter, the colder weather in tea-growing regions this past winter has made this year’s spring teas especially good.

Here’s what’s new, so far:

• 2025 Baozhong — it’s back, and grassier, fresher, and orchid-ier than ever! If you are one of the people who’s been asking me for a punchy green oolong (you know who you are), this tea is for you.

• 2025 Spring Lily — lovely, creamy, elegant. This year’s vintage feels extra harmonized with excellent mouthfeel.

• 2025 Osmanthus Green — our house blend & roast, using Spring Lily as a base with osmanthus flowers. The osmanthus imparts a soft apricot blossom sweetness on the tea. You won’t find this one made anywhere else!

• 2025 Stone Chocolate — a perfectly dark-roasted masterpiece of a tea. Mr. Chen told me that this year’s leaves were more fire-tolerant (耐火), so the final roast is ever so slightly lighter than last year’s. He was happy with the flavor and didn’t feel the need to roast it more just to match last year’s profile. I loved hearing that — it’s a reminder of how artisanal tea-making is guided by nature as much as by skill. Unlike large-scale production, the goal is to make the best tea every year, not the same tea every year. It’s a topic I could go on about, but I’ll save it for another time…

Four weeks ago, when I embarked on our crowdfunding campaign, I imagined that, as the 30-day time limit drew near, I would be announcing that we had raised xyz amount, and writing one last plea for people to chip in. Instead, I have the absolute pleasure and privilege of writing that 85 of you have already helped us meet our goal and raise more than $10,000 to open our — and Boston’s — first Asian-style teahouse!!! The past four weeks of this crowdfunding journey have been heart-warming, tear-jerking, and confidence-boosting. People I knew I could count on showed up. People I didn’t expect to showed up. And even people I don’t know yet showed up. All of your support means the world to me — it means I can secure crucial inventory, hire staff, prepare the space to welcome YOU, and open our doors very soon! It is even more meaningful to me because I know we are all currently facing global economic pains and uncertainties, and everyone is budgeting and spending more mindfully. So for thinking of and including us in your budget, especially at this moment - thank you, thank you, thank you.

If, by any chance, you were hoping to contribute and didn’t get to yet — our campaign is still active until May 15th! A Weather Report from Origin

We are now well into the 2025 spring tea buying season, and it’s going to be a good one! If you’ve been with us for the last few years, you might notice that we are debuting our new teas later this spring than in years past. This is because, through conversations with our tea producers, we’ve learned that several of our core tea regions - including southeastern China and Taiwan - experienced a colder winter this year (just like us here in New England) and a later spring harvest. This, however, also means that the tea is very likely to be even tastier this spring, and worth the extra wait. We are very excited for our new teas, which will start arriving in a week or two!

Meanwhile, our Yuja Peel from Jeju, Korea, which is typically harvested in early winter, suffered a crop failure this past winter. The yuja fruits are grown 100% organically, which makes them more susceptible to harsh environmental conditions. Last summer, the typhoon season in East Asia was an especially severe one, so much so that the yuja trees hardly produced any flowers; even those that did flower didn’t bear much fruit. Unfortunately, the tea maker was not able to procure enough fruits to make a 2024 vintage, and there will likely be a significant price increase on the next batch he makes or sells.

Luckily, we still have ample stock of the 2023 vintage, and will keep our price stable as long as we can. Furthermore, as customers who have tried it will tell you, this tea, because it’s made in the same style as Chinese chenpi (陳皮), is meant to be aged, and will only get sweeter and tastier with age.

Today is the day! We are thrilled to announce the launch of our crowdfunding campaign, to help open our - and Boston’s! - very first traditional Asian-style teahouse in Kendall Square! We are already working hard to transform a room inside the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) office building into a beautiful and comfortable tea room, a space for slow, meaningful moments over tea. A place to learn, connect, and experience the kind of tea we’ve been sharing all along: traditionally handcrafted, single-origin, full-leaf teas with stories to tell.

Having our own tea room - aka a tea home - means that we’ll be able to have tea with our community more regularly, and not only see you at pop-ups and special events. We’re also creating comfy nooks where you can share tea moments with the people *you* love (not just with me!).

We’re bringing our dream teahouse to life with the help of NuMarket, a crowdfunding platform. When you contribute, you’ll receive 120% back in credits to spend on sit-down tea experiences, single-origin teas, vintage and artisanal teaware, and classes. Plus, these credits never expire!

Support Our Campaign

To be honest, it’s kind of an uncertain and scary time to be opening a new business - especially one like mine - given the political and economic climate. One thing that I keep reminding myself is that tea culture, as a part of human civilization, is at least 2,500 years old. During that time, dynasties have risen and fallen, borders have expanded and shrunk, and people - including my ancestors - have suffered through war and other man-made calamities. But the spirit of tea has always persisted. Deep in my heart, I believe that tea plays a positive role in our world, and I want to keep doing what I can to share it with others and keep this treasure of human culture alive.

Last but not least, I’d like to share a short poem with you. It’s an unorthodox reading of some famous lines from a Tang dynasty poem, with my own addition to them:

山中无历日，寒尽不知年。(太上隐者，《答人》，唐)
寂寂炉烟上，茶香静里传。(关愔)

I hope your spring is off to a great start! So, I have some big news to share… I still can’t quite believe that, 3 years into our journey, it’s finally happening… we’re opening a teahouse in Cambridge by Kendall Square!!! To be fair, it is more of a “tea room” than a “teahouse,” but nonetheless, I am so excited to fill this little room with beauty, good tea, and good people (you!). Here’s a sneak peek of what the room currently looks like, after we filled it with plants:

Among other things, I’m planning to change up/add more seating in the space (including floor seating!), add pendant lights/table lamps, and bamboo shades on the sides of the room. Hoping to have everything ready by late/spring early summer (aka very soon!). As for its exact location - it shall be revealed in our upcoming crowdfunding campaign…!

Speaking of our campaign - perhaps you’ve already heard of NuMarket, where you get the opportunity to invest in a local small business in exchange for 120% in credits to spend there after they open! Happy solar new year, and happy almost lunar new year! The Lunar New Year starts on Wednesday 1/29 this year, and to celebrate, we are collaborating once again with Cambridge-based, über-talented baker Em Tang to bring you a special gift box!

Though we focus on highlighting oolong teas most of the time, once a year, we proudly shine the spotlight on black tea. It is a common tea style familiar to many, but when it comes to artisanal-level, handpicked and hand-crafted small-batch black teas, their artistry should not be overlooked. This year, we have curated a selection of 3 black teas + 1 oolong tea for this RED-themed box, together with Em's *NEW* Dark Honey & osmanthus shortbread cookies to start your new year off with a bang!

Two of the four teas - Dark Honey and Stone Chocolate - are crowd favorites, and the other two are new and limited-edition:

• 2024 Heritage Red is a tea made from leaves of Camellia formosensis, a cousin of the tea plant that is indigenous to Taiwan. Sweetly toasty like roasted sweet potatoes or oats, with a soft, slightly malty broth, a bit of cherry tomato on the nose, and a lingering mineral finish.

• 2024 Peach Lapsang is a delightful game-changer when it comes to black tea, with its papaya-like fruitiness and freshness, and an aftertaste that ranges from fresh to caramelized peaches. We applied an additional light electric roast on this tea ourselves to amplify the body for a richer mouthfeel while maintaining the bright fruit and honey notes.

• Tuesday 1/28 at Cambridge Naturals, Sip & Savor: An Oolong Tea Journey. An in-depth introduction to 4 beautiful oolong teas. Participants will also receive a 15% off coupon for Cambridge Naturals.

• Our Dark Honey is a relatively light-oxidized and light-roasted black tea; one of the reasons it is part of our curation is its potential for aging. The 2023 vintage has aged nicely over the past year, acquiring some additional richness and depth. We are keeping it on the shelf until the end of November, before pulling it to age ourselves until some future time. If you’d like to restock this vintage, please buy it before the end of this month.

We haven’t hosted a tea class in a while and have been getting a lot of requests, so we’re squeezing one in this month! The menu will be 5 teas omakase-style (tea host’s choice), and seating is limited to 6 people. Both new and experienced tea drinkers are welcome. • Our 2023 vintage of Yuja Peel is now available! This is the 4th vintage that we have sourced from Mr. Park in as many years. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, dried and aged citrus peel is warming in nature, and especially good for the lungs. Perfect for this time of year.

• Just a few boxes left of 2022 Yuja Peel! Over time, this has transformed into a sweeter tea, while the newest vintage is a little more tart. (Mr. Park actually doubles the price of his older yuja peel every year, but we’re keeping them all the same, for now at least…!)

• Osmanthus Green and Osmanthus Red, our own blended & lightly roasted oolongs that debuted over Mid-Autumn Festival, are now in the online shop! They are available individually or together as a set.

• We’re slowly starting to say goodbye to 2015 Longevity, our aged shou mei white tea. This was one of the first non-oolongs that we featured, and while we’ve been fortunate enough to restock it several times over the past two years, the tea maker has finally sold out of it, and has not made it in the same style since. When it comes to vintage-specific teas, once a tea is gone, it is gone for good. If you are a card-carrying member of this tea’s fan club, please take note! We will definitely be on the lookout for a new white tea (and maybe some other non-oolongs!) soon.

Some of you might remember from a previous newsletter that local musician and tea enthusiast Jonathan Kronheimer and I started a podcast! We brew and discuss 2024 Spring Dawn, the picking and processing of high mountain oolongs, brewing them “thickly,” and Rachmaninoff’s ‘Lilacs’. Our Beauties are back! Specifically, 2024 Classic Beauty and 2024 Royal Beauty, our latest vintages of these summer oolongs from western Taiwan. If you know Oriental/Eastern Beauty or champagne oolong or dong mei (東美) or bai hao oolong (白毫烏龍) - they are all different names for this same style of tea. Just like last year, we are pleased to offer 2 fantastic grades of it. The Classic Beauty is our standard grade (i.e. what we believe should be the standard, and we have a high bar!). The Royal Beauty is a premium grade; it delivers everything you would expect, and then some. Above and beyond. Surprise and delight.

An Osmanthus Mid-Autumn

If you haven’t heard yet, Korean Momma and I are teaming up to bring you “Life is Peachy: 花好月圆," an osmanthus-themed oolong tea and cheesecake set this Mid-Autumn! We are proud to present 2 new teas for this special occasion, a green oolong and a red oolong, both blended with osmanthus and electrically roasted in-house. And although mooncake is the traditional dessert of choice for Mid-Autumn, we think that Korean Momma’s ultra creamy Basque-style cheesecake is a fun twist on this tradition. Like mooncake, it is round, has a rich flavor, and is meant to be shared with loved ones. And it could not pair more perfectly with our osmanthus oolong teas! 👌
