Although I no longer participate in Facebook, certain occasions require scouring Marketplace for treasures. Acquiring a beautiful playground set for free was among some of the fruits of my searching this summer. Recently “patio dining set” was on my wish list for eating outside and Autumn school days.

On this particular day, after a couple weeks of diligent scanning, a simple metal and wooden table with benches caught my eye. Only $100! The catch? It was nearly two hours away. In my vulnerable state, the nicely staged photo captured my attention and exposed my desire to acquire a dining table once and for all. I reached out, she would hold, and I was hooked.

I immediately created scenarios to include this acquisition into a productive round trip, maybe next Saturday…better yet, how about today! It was mid-afternoon. My husband was knee-deep in a project, one kid was napping, the others seemed content enough. I tossed them a box of macaroni and bike helmets and dashed out the door for my three hour and more round trip.

Now don’t get me wrong, three hours of silence, prayer, and catching up on phone calls is a rare treat for a stay-at-home mom. Yet I couldn’t kick this nagging feeling as the miles wore on, “What am I thinking??” Three phone calls and thirty minutes of solitude later I reached my destination in a nice enough neighborhood, with a nice enough fellow homeschool mom. I glanced at the table, still blinded by desire as the two home school moms proceeded to load the table and two benches in the back of my husband’s truck with one moving blanket and two ratchet straps that I was clueless as to how to use.

My first mistake was handing the seller $100 hard cash immediately before actually inspecting the desired specimen. There was a moment loading the table where I sheepishly muttered, “It looks a little rickety…”. Yet, the pressure of getting back home to my family who was surely losing their marbles without me and the vision of picturesque homeschool days kept me naive to the reality that this hunk of mangled wood was worth $20 at best.

I strapped down the piece of work well enough using knots in which my arborist father would be appalled by. I bid my comrade in arms farewell and drove off to my next stop, Lowes for an item for the home project and a can of stain for the table. Check. Last stop, mllk. I went out of my way to fill my jars determined to suck every drop of productivity and potential from this spur-of-the-moment road trip. I lugged the jars to the milk tank, pulled the lever, and nothing. No milk.The tank had already been emptied for the day. I left befuddled empty, literally, and began the last leg home.

Still, my thoughts were waffling between, “I should have never left the house.”, and “I can’t believe this lady got $100 out of me!” Mixed with the reality that up until this point I had yet to fully inspect my purchase in my haste. The moment of truth. I unloaded the benches. Sturdy enough, needs refinishing. Next was the table, horribly worn, the top consisted of cracked and warped boards.

My husband was not going to be happy about another project in the midst of all the others in the que! I walked into a kitchen exactly the way I’d left it, lunch dishes still sitting out. No dinner plans to speak of or in sight. The kids were alive, but unhappy. (The husband still diligently working.)

Again the discouraging thoughts nagged, less about the money, more about the frivolous use of my time. I chalked it up to a hard lesson learned and quiet time.

The next day I was cleaning our bookshelf and flipped through an old book in which was an envelope with a fifty dollar bill hidden for years. Immediately my mind went to the previous day’s goose chase and I felt the Lord’s hand upon me reminding me that he will provide even amidst my mistakes. A few days later, in the same week, a friend handed me a one hundred dollar bill out of the blue.

Mercy triumphs over judgement.

Whether or not my wild goose chase was sin, it wasn’t wisdom. It wasn’t considering the needs of my family above my own. I deserved a lecture from my husband at best and a good butt-kicking at worst. Instead, the Lord, out of thin air, not only provided the amount to cover my Facebook fiasco, but the gas to get there!

Life can feel intense. If you’re a type-A check-list driven gal like me, it’s easy to fall into “Drill Sargenting” and get stuck there. My God is One who accomplished it all, and provides more than enough. He’s not heavy-handed, not tied to dead-lines or anxious about tomorrow. In fact he has eternity in his grip.

He not only paid the price for our sin, he removed them as if they never occurred. We can rest in that.

We can rest in Him.

Lighten up and smile.

With Him we shall do valiantly.

The day after returning I turned thirty-six and celebrated like you do in your mid thirties with a long walk and a good nap. I have a tradition of asking the Lord for a verse for my year around my birthday. This year felt very poignant, “My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:8. And in case you missed it, 63 is 36 backwards…😳

SOUL: The seat of appetites, emotions, our physical being, the will, thoughts and character.

This is a picture of someone’s whole being clinging for dear life to something, someone stronger and more sure than they. It’s the opposite of isolation or self sufficiency. I began to observe the vines growing absolutely bonkers in my garden one afternoon. My eyes focused on a tiny yet determined little cucumber tendril wrapped around the twine. Fresh tears rushed to my eyes as the Lord reminded me of what it looks like to cling.

Such a delicate vine, using all its energy to find a stable source on which it can continue to grow, mature and bear fruit. The wind blows, the rain beats down but it bears down on something that will uphold it.

As we behold him we become like him. (2 Corinthians 3:18) There is glory I have not yet experienced and I believe he’s made an invitation to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8).

There is no striving to behold, no boxes to check, no formula to follow. Intimacy is being known, seen and loved. What would I look like if I opened up every part of my day, my inner world, my desires to his glory realm where I was so intertwined with him I forgot whose desires are whose. This is what my heart longs for in this thirty-sixth year.

Health

A quick garden update. Everything’s growing like wild. Bunnies and a wandering knight tried to freeload on my greens so an additional fence was installed and has kept out Peter Rabbit so far. I planted all the sprawling vines much too close and just picked the first zucchini.

As I trim and thin the plants, we’ve eaten the sprouts including using carrot tops like parsley and adding it to salads and pesto. I’ve sautéed pumpkin sprouts and beet greens in coconut oil and salt. Nothing wasted! Especially those lush micro-greens. Carrot tops are high in Vitamin C, A and K along with Potassium, Calcium, Iron and Chlorophyll. Be sure to chop them well or blanch quickly to soften the bitterness which makes them highly bioavailable.

If greens aren’t really your thing you can try a yummy new sourdough chocolate chip cookie recipe we loved! More sugar yes, but more healthy gut-healthy ferments.

Home

The “little foxes” that spoil the home. “Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards…” Song of Solomon 2:15. Solomon is addressing the things that take our attention away from abiding in Christ, the vine. If Solomon’s wife were to write this verse I think she would be talking about the random clutter throughout her home.

The one lego in the corner of the room. The random piece of hardware on the kitchen counter you can’t identify but you’re pretty sure your husband is waiting to fix something, the hair tie on the laundry room floor, the semi-important paper on the console table awaiting proper placement. The little things that take a slightly extra effort and energy to put away correctly - so they just sit there. For days.

These things add up to clutter which can drain our family’s creativity and spoil our spaces.

Here are two ideas for catching those little foxes:

1.) Practice the discipline of putting things away, ALL THE WAY.

Include kids in this process! Give them the one lego and ask that they make the trip to their room to return it to the lego bin. Take the five extra minutes after cleaning up the kitchen to actually put away everything off the counter (if you’re that person) and re-home those random little items. The joy of a cleared counter builds momentum to keep it that way. Whatever room you’re tidying up that day, make a visual sweep and make sure everything has found its home. If you live with another human(s) it’s not real life for everything to be in its place all at once. Perhaps one room at a time, one room a day.

2.) A pretty bowl.

Sometimes we just can’t get to it all. I love pretty little bowls that can hold the random things for a night when I don’t have time to file that receipt or put the lego away. Think of it as a temporary “junk drawer” or the “tomorrow bowl”. Sometimes there’s seasonal things that need to stay out. For example, our “Bug Thing” for bug bites that sits on top of our kitchen sink for the warmer months because it’s grabbed for so often.

Almost everyone I speak with frets about the speed in which summer is going. Whether it’s flying by or inching along, remember, there is a time for every season. We’re not to worry about tomorrow for today has enough trouble in itself. One day, one moment at a time. Breath deeply, smell what’s in bloom. Cling to Jesus, his love is better than life itself.

My Prayer,

Jesus you are the glorified man. You lived the perfect life, you died and now you are very much alive. Open up our senses to your glory all around us. Awaken us with fresh love that draws us near. Thank you for not keeping records of wrongs or a list of our shortcomings, but calling us and seeing us for who we are as a totally new creation in you. Holy Spirit help us yield to rest, to beholding your glory which is what transforms us. Sear us with love for your Word and bring fresh revelation as we read. Overcome us and overwhelm us as we cling to you.

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.^[b] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

After waffling between a new playground set for the kids and something a little more “Red Green”, we’ve relented to building out a natural play area - updates to come. So far we’ve gathered a large wooden spool, a handful of recycled tires and some pallets. Our baby seedlings are thriving in their new home and our farmland is blanketed with green sprouts. We’ve wrapped up Haven’s 4th grade home school year and everyone’s excited about it.

Heart

I don’t know how Mothers’ Day was for you, but increasingly all I desire to do is sleep past 6am and stare at my kids’ beautiful faces. Cam helped me plant three blueberry bushes. The apple trees from two years ago are hanging on. I’ve made it clear, if you want to buy me a plant, choose one that will feed me.

The inferno of motherhood is continually my training ground of sanctification. Holy Spirit, my best friend, my Helper parents me as I disciple my kids. I still get stuck in the false expectation that a peaceful, orderly home is the goal rather than the joy of mining treasure along the way. Mining is messy and a lot of hard work.

That’s how I feel most days, like I emerged from a mine shaft with my helmet on, axe in hand and the whites of my eyes the only soot-free part. Ever so slowly I’m settling into the reality that life is a lot like digging for gold. Every day the helmet of salvation is strapped on our head to keep us sane and alive. The Sword of the Spirit - our axe - unearths revelation. The soot of life clings, yet eyes set on Christ remain clear. Like dirt, egos are left in the washbasin of New Life. Every small victory is his glory shining forth.

The Father has been lighting the embers of my heart with anticipation that he doesn’t need me to get “all cleaned up” in order to dwell with him. My children likewise are not required to obtain outward religious reverence to experience God’s glory. Through Jesus’s body we’ve been given access and boldness to enter his very presence (Ephesians 3:12). Jesus made peace for us to dwell with the Father again (Colossians 1:20).

Like the swallow who chose to build her nest at the altars, so I will bring my children near the presence of God. Even through the whining, the quarrels, the noise, the mess because the Father doesn’t turn his back, he welcomes us, soot and all.

“Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.” Psalm 84:3

So I’ll turn on worship music again tomorrow morning, I’ll read another Bible story while getting pelted with a nerf gun bullet, I’ll communicate with my boys once again how to take turns, I’ll invite my son to sit on my lap with my Bible open, we will light our Sabbath candles once again this weekend and anoint our kids with oil. I desire to be one who leans into the Father’s arms in the midst of the mess instead of shrinking back, and one who brings my kids with me.

In the Kitchen

Salad season is upon us, and this one has been on repeat in our house thanks to Costco Magazine and my mom. If you didn’t know, Costco Magazine has recipe gems!

Peach + Blueberry Spring Salad

Dressing

• 3 Tb apple cider vinegar

• 2 Tb honey

• 1 Tb Dijon mustard

• ½ cup olive oil

• S + P to taste

Salad

• 10 cups spinach

• 2 sliced peaches

• 2 cups blueberries

• ⅔ crumbled goat or feta cheese

• ½ toasted walnuts (glazed if you want to take it up a notch)

Father, thank you for the Sabbath of and glory of Summer. Tune our ears to hear from you. By your grace empower us with whole-hearted devotion toward you. Illuminate your paths of peace and right living. Let us be ones who draw near your altar and become captivated with your voice. Holy Spirit show us the beauty and depth of the Father’s love in the Word this Summer and ignite your fire for you above any other thing or pursuit. “With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!” Psalm 119:19

Thanks to a dear friend (thanks Kendra!) who shared this DIY chocolate I am now the creator of my own cacao creations.

Here is the original ratio:

• ½ Cup Cacao Powder

• ¼ Cup Honey

• ⅓ Cup Coconut Oil

Melt coconut oil, combine well, pour into a glass container and set carefully in the freezer to harden. It freezes quickly! Store in the freezer.

If you’re like another of my friends who tried my variety, you may need to brace yourself. ;)

This is my preferred ratio:

• ½ Cup Coconut Oil

• ⅓ Cup Cocoa Powder

• 1 Tb Honey

Once poured into a container, lightly sprinkle sea salt and douse with unsweetened dried coconut flakes. The bonus of this version is it’s almost guaranteed your kids will not like it, therefore, not one square will be stolen.

As you can imagine, the varieties of this healthy and simple DIY chocolate bar are limitless. Choose your own adventure and you can thank me later.

Home

On the home front, I am slowly curating cozy corners and adding finishing touches to our work in progress. Like curtains in our master bedroom. We’ve ordered the storage solution to complete our master closet and prayer room space. I am making preparations for a “legit” vegetable garden this year. Local friends assure me our soil is so rich that we need only to put seeds in the ground despite doing zero soil prep last Autumn. We shall see if they speak the truth.

Heart

The Lord continues to captivate my heart with prayer and His Word as the true source of satisfaction. We attend a “House of Prayer” in town once per week where we come to behold Jesus and align with his heart and the works he wants to accomplish through his people. We were part of a conference this past month in the same location where we saw a room packed with people hungering after God, filled anew with his Spirit and pricked with conviction to continue to press in, he is our life.

By faith, I’m stepping more into my identity as an “intercessor”. That can be a big, religious word with a lot of connotations yet it’s really quite simple. Jesus, our brother was the Great High Priest and Intercessor and now we follow after him to intercede, or enact the Father’s will in people’s lives and situations he leads us to. The Lord even told Moses his intent, “and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” Exodus 19:6

Israel is a part and also a shadow of future Believers who would be grafted into the covenant. Peter echoes this in the New Testament by reminding believers of who they are, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Intercession is simply standing in the gap for someone else and proclaiming the excellencies of the promises of God. Through us, these prayers carry great authority and power for the sake of another. Which begs the question, if we don’t step into our identity as ones who will stand in the gap, will God’s works get done?

Making it practical.

I have three young children who are always with me. Life is full like everyone else’s. We even added “broken bone” to our parental resumé this month. My children wake me up early in the morning, making beating them out of bed nearly impossible for now. Scheduling a designated time of prayer, in this season, feels impossible.

The Holy Spirit is training me to meet with him in the margins. The five minutes of peace in the car ride, cleaning up lunch, going out on a walk, folding laundry, snuggling a kid at night, walking to get the mail, taking the long way home from a meeting. Saying no to distraction, yes to his word, yes to praying in the Spirit, yes to asking him questions.

I believe intercession can look like buying a friend a small gift, sending a random encouraging text, taking notice of your child’s specific needs or desires, initiating intimacy and yes, carrying another’s burden in prayer.

A caterpillar spends its days munching on leaves and growing larger for the transformation ahead. What are we feeding on in the margins? I believe as we learn to feed on him throughout the day we will experience a supernatural transformation that will only lead to God’s glory increasing in us. Learning to do so will continue to require us saying “no” to many inputs. I’ve noticed that the craving for distraction greatly decreases as I strengthen my “turning” muscles.

As Corey Russel shared at the conference hosted last week, “a fresh turning is required for a new season with God.” Sometimes it’s a turning toward Him, his word, others and other times it’s a turning away from certain relationships, distractions, et cetera.

“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.” Revelation 19:12-16

Meet me in the margins, behold his face afresh, and bring chocolate!

Prayer

Father, like the Apostle John we ask for strength to turn toward you again. As we turn, let us see you rightly, as you are and as a result ourselves. Thank you for the identity as a “Holy Nation and a Royal Priesthood”, we choose to believe that. Holy Spirit, you’re our help and power. Fill us anew with strength to turn, with insight as we do, and with hearts full of Jesus’s compassion to release the “excellencies of Christ” on those around us. Meet us in the margins!

It’s still cold enough to keep a fire stoked all day and embrace a hot oven baking fresh loaves of bread. Time to throw in some inspired learning as the last few months of homeschool roll along. A field trip? Yes. How about some fun state trivia? Done. Homemade donuts for lunch? Why not?

Sourdough and baked goods have been a family staple for over five years and two years we have been milling our own grain.

You can check out this past post for more of the benefits of freshly milled grains. The weekly joy of getting my hands into dough and seeing it transform into a work of art and then seeing my family delight in eating never gets old. My kids have been enjoying “cinnamon roll fry bread” on bread-making day with leftover discard. You’ll thank me later.

Cinnamon Roll Fry Bread

• Approximately ½ cup sourdough discard

• 1 tablespoon brown sugar

• ½ teaspoon cinnamon

• Dash of sea salt

• Dash of vanilla

Fry in butter on a cast iron, flip once bubbles begin to appear. Serve with butter and cinnamon sugar.

As I make my way through the Bible again this year I’m intrigued with the frequency of food and agriculture mentioned. I’m convinced the building blocks for health are found in its pages and the resources we need are provided for in creation. Jesus really is the Way - the way to wholeness. The Truth - revelation for every area of our beings. The Life - the only path to vitality, and he adds no sorrow to it.

“The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.” Proverbs 10:22

Sorrow is translated from the Hebrew “ʻetseb” which the Strong’s defines as: an earthen vessel; usually (painful) toil; also a pang (whether of body or mind):—grievous, idol, labor, sorrow.

The topic of health is limitless. You can find any “camp” you want to believe on the internet and I’ve gone down some of those rabbit holes - yet I’m convinced God’s way to vitality is one where the “burden is easy and his yoke is light” (Matthew 11:30). Technology, culture-imposed beauty standards and the focus of self easily makes wellness an idol. Like anything, take God out of the center and painful toil enters the scenario. Painful toil can look like anxiety, obsession, over-comparison and depression.

“The more self-conscious you are, the more miserable you are.” Jordan Peterson

Intertwined throughout the entirety of the Word is the good tidings and great joy of salvation. Salvation means whole, delivered, set free, safe and sound. Moses had clear eyes until his death (Deuteronomy 37:7). Joshua was eighty-five and still as strong as he was when a young man (Joshua 14:10-11).

I appreciate the work of Dr. Axe and Jordan Rubin. They’ve done the heavy lifting of digging into scripture and study to make practical what the Bible has to say about wellness. They’ve just released a new book on the subject I’m excited to read.

I’ve felt a renewed urgency for consecration in my life. Not that my pursuit is perfection or self righteousness or a life void of joy! Just the opposite, feeling a desire to draw near with full assurance in faith that I’m allowing his love to transform my mind, my body and my spirit. Instead of leaning on my own way in health, really trusting his. Our bodies are temples of the Spirit of the One who created the entire universe! I want to be open as the Holy Spirit gives keys of how to steward this body throughout my years even though I’ll only live in this body for “a vapor”.

Here are four practices that have been foundational in our health.

Bread

Swapping freshly milled grain for all of our regular baking has been a massive way to stock our cells with minerals like iron, magnesium, phosphorus (bone health), zinc and selenium. Vitamins like a full spectrum of B vitamins and high levels of Vitamin E (wards off viruses!). Active enzymes that aid in digestion. Compare this to store bought flour which is void of over twenty of these key nutrients and are more likely to harm than heal.

It’s a simple swap to make the typical breads, pancakes, muffins, cookies, bread, etc. Think of milling grains like using an over-sized coffee grinder, you simply mill enough for what you’re making and use it right away. Shortly after milling the grain oxidation begins to reduce nutrients through oxidization which is why freshly milling the grain is important.

Now bread is considered a “health food” in our home and a staple with meals and for snacks.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

Not until a kernel of wheat is crushed does it release beneficial and nourishing component for our flourishing. In the same way, Jesus, our Bread of Life was crushed in order to release over us peace and wholeness.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:51

Oil Pulling

Ok, you’re not going to find “oil pulling” in the Bible, however, you will find plenty of references to olive oil which you can use to oil pull! I’ve added this to my morning rhythm and it has two main benefits.

First, for the first 10-20 minutes per day I cannot say a word which has been very beneficial for growing the fruit of the Spirit in my life. Second, oil pulling helps reduce bacteria like streptococcus mutans that cause plaque and decay, fights plaque inflammation, cavities, freshen breath and my husband and I notice it helps whiten teeth.

Our nine year old is doing it too which is a plus for her oral health and a bonus of 15 minutes less per day of questions.

How I do it:

1. Take about a tablespoon of coconut oil first thing in the morning

2. Swish for 10-20 minutes through teeth and gums

3. Spit in the trash

4. Scrape tongue and brush teeth

I prefer doing it first thing in the morning for a “mouth detox” of bacteria that has built up throughout the night but it’s beneficial at any point throughout the day.

Outdoor Prayer Walks

As a 35 year old I’m taking strength training seriously to continue to build muscle and bone strength, but walking is the foundation for my movement. My daily walking window these days is after lunch when my two year old is down and the other two are settled into quiet time.

Fresh air is the most underestimated tool in our toolbox. The amount of times I’ve escaped for a fifteen minute walk and come back ready to tackle life with a renewed attitude and perspective are countless. I’m thankful for a wide open space out my front door with nothing in sight but prairie, pond and field but wherever you are, there is sky, trees and fresh air. Much of my walking time is communication and responding to messages, however, I’ve been taking the first mile just to pray or listen. To observe, ask the Lord what or who is in his heart.

Ever have those 2pm cravings for sugar? Two studies from the University of Exeter found that a 15-minute walk can curb cravings for chocolate and even reduce the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations.1 When all I want to do is graze I get outside!

Hate being sick? Take more Vitamin “W”! A study of over 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least 20 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less. And if they did get sick, it was for a shorter duration, and their symptoms were milder.2

Walking is a gift for the mind, body and spirit.

Sabbath

Practicing Sabbath has been something we have pursued as a family for awhile and it’s looked different throughout the years. Sunday’s are our Sabbath and although we’ve set this day aside to rest and be together, it’s become even more meaningful as of late. Reading Charlie Kirk’s final book, Stop in the Name of God, was a catalyst for a deeper conviction of the gift that it is.

It’s one thing to stop doing work one day a week, it’s another thing to have a day set apart. To delight in the Lord rather than a day of self-focus or entertainment without intention.

“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” Exodus 20:11

I don’t believe Sabbath is a religious burden. I believe it’s a treasure and an ancient rhythm for our flourishing from a good, good God. Our simple approach to Sabbath is to have a special meal Saturday night where we light two candles, one for “cease” and one for “celebrate”. Following God’s example when he completed his work of creation, not because he was tired, but because he was finished. I turn my phone completely off before dinner and don’t turn it back on until Sunday night or Monday morning.

Sunday we go to church, sit longer with our morning coffees, I typically take a nap without hesitation, spend time with my journal and Bible, take a long walk without any inputs, eat good food together, spend uninterrupted time playing with the kids, laugh as family, I take a break from any house work and don’t online shop. There’s time enjoying friends and family, and inviting others to enjoy this time together.

I won’t go into theology or make a case for if Christians are still bound to observe Sabbath today, all I know is that truly revering one day above the rest and delighting in the Giver of it has significantly shifted something in our home. Emotional margin, spiritual vitality and physical balance throughout the rest of the week are fruits of leaning into Sabbath. This is just a rough snap shot of what it means for us, and the varied benefits we’ve reaped as a result.

He wants us to draw near.

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

I hope this has sparked a hunger in you to yield your body to the Creator. I hope any toil, sorrow or anxiety you may feel about your health is swallowed up by faith. I hope there was a seed that will grow into greater revelation into practical application so that you can jump off the hamster wheel of the false narratives of the “health gods” of the internet.

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” 1 John 1:2

My Prayer

Father, I pray for every eye and every ear reading this. I pray that it would go well with her, that she may be in good health in direct proportion as it is with her soul. I ask you Holy Spirit to release your presence over her life and bring greater understanding that you’ve swallowed up death, fear and the grave. Your burden is easy and your yoke is light. I ask for courage to exchange the weight she’s carrying with the peace that Jesus purchased through his physical body being crushed. Jesus you are her peace, you are her healing. Thank you for a cleansing flow of your word to wash over my friend today as she puts her faith in you afresh.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

If you need a place to start, read Isaiah 53 today and meditate on the fact that Jesus willingly and joyfully endured the cross for you.

It’s 6:15am. My workout clothes are on, the tea kettle is steaming, the little boys’ breakfasts are being scarfed down. I sit down on my velvet green chair facing our flickering wood stove and crack open my Bible with a steaming cup of mushroom coffee beside me. In the background, worship leaders play soft music on my laptop screen. As I read the first few paragraphs, simultaneous toddler redirection is happening, noses are being wiped, and my lap transforms into a jungle gym climbed upon with sticky fingers. When the energy starts to rise in the room I remind my children, “This is a worship space right now, you can wrestle in the other room.” I say a short prayer of thanks out loud to remind us this is - for a moment - a sacred space.

Many days a word stands out, ripe for the picking. I grab a hold of its juicy fruit and try to savor its sweetness throughout the day. As suddenly as the day began, we are swept up in transition. Breakfast is cleared and the day marches on like a soldier to the battle line.

I wish I could say this is a magic morning method of a transformed home in which every family member willingly yields to his own desire and lovingly embraces the other at every opportunity. In which every person picks up after herself and goes about household chores with a happy heart, and the marriage relationship goes on without a hitch. Nope. There is no method to transformation, just diligence in seeking the One who alone can transform the heart.

The last year in particular has been one of sifting. Anger reared its head and threatened to consume me. Frustration lingered with strife in sibling relationships. Many times throughout the day I found myself escalating during stressful instances in which my emotional margin and spiritual maturity could not meet the demands of the moment. This makes for an easy target for the enemy to launch arrows of shame and discouragement. A wise friend encouraged me throughout this season that many in the Body of Christ are in an intense season of pruning. The Lord in his mercy pressing on fault lines of the heart in order to walk in the strength of purity. Turns out my children were never the problem, it was sanctification working itself out.

There has been a breakthrough of Heaven’s perspective and a measure of grace I’ve not experienced before. The familiar anger quick to surface at any sign of disorder is being replaced by peace, kindness and gentleness. The raised voices and demands are being replaced by wisdom to shepherd hearts through tense moments. Dread of the day is transforming to purpose as I see my home as a crucible for the Gospel. The place where the Gospel is to be taught and most importantly caught. The only credit I take is a sincere desperation for Jesus and a yielding to the pain of pruning. His grace really is made PERFECT in our weakness, and it really is enough. There’s no way I could muster this up in my own stregnth.

Home

Our first taste of relationships, morality, security, boundaries, identity, self-worth and creativity are established within a family. Family, the first institution a human being experiences that ideally lay a foundation for healthy relationships in the future.

Home, an environment which covertly cultivates and emphasizes ideals in either a helpful or harmful way. A cocoon to safely form identity, discipline and understanding until adequate strength is acquired to breakthrough and enter the world with beauty and grace. Sadly, many prematurely break free or are thrust out from this sacred space without the strength to fly or the form to function.

Despite our family of origin story, Christ makes us new and hands each person a clean slate to write a different story. Our homes are a sacred assignment.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1

“Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.” Proverbs 19:11

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 12:13-14

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:1-3

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”” John 13:34-35

I think the greatest manifestation of the Gospel is a family who carries a genuine love for one another when no one else is looking. Where day after day moments of strife are thwarted with a word of truth turning hearts toward Love. Where perfection is never the aim, but purity, pursuit and a fear of the Lord is. If we receive the grace to live out this truth in our homes, there is no place his power will not reach.

What would our world look like if our homes were little Gospel Universities?

How?

I believe the Lord is leading his people to turn back to the Word. In an interview recently, faith in culture advocate, Jenny Donnelly was calling for a “Bible Revival” and I couldn’t agree more. We need the whole Word, Genesis to Revelation. Not one-liners surrounded by flowery commentaries. How are we to lead our children in the Truth if we are ignorant of it?

There are many One Year Bible reading plans on YouVersion Bible App or in print. I prefer plans that include daily readings of the Old and New Testament. The first time through can feel tedious and even confusing but in faith just keep going, keep asking the Holy Spirit to open up wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17). He will begin to speak, reveal and weave together truth that WILL lead to transformation. Remember, Jesus IS the Word made flesh (John 1:1). When we open the Bible we’re not reading an antiquated history book we’re communing with the Lord himself.

We read in the morning, in the evening. We read with little kids with sticky fingers on our laps. We read while being interrupted by sibling rivalry. We read before bed, in the car, listening on our walk. We read during our lunch break, in the pickup line, at our children’s bedside. Like life, it looks messy but we pay the price because we can not afford NOT to know Him. Human wisdom is crushed under the weight of a lawless culture. Deception will blind us to the truth. We will be led astray. This is the price we pay if we don’t.

This is my urgent call for women and men to rise up with wings like eagles and renew their strength in the Word, and to take your families with you.

“but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 41:31

The love for the things of the world is going to have to die in order to grow in love with the Word. The flesh must remain crucified when it wants to scroll, watch the next episode or turn on a movie. We must yield to grace when margin presents itself more often than not and lean into the word rather than turn on the news, the podcast or the Youtube clip. It’s going to require spiritual muscle and endurance to pray in the Spirit for the few minutes when we’d rather drown in distraction. This is the battle of our age. Our attention.

“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” Proverbs 8:17

“My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield is better than choice silver.” Proverbs 8:19

“For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Proverbs 8:35-36

My Prayer,

Father, thank you for your Son, the Word made flesh. Holy Spirit we cry out for the spirit of wisdom and revelation as we open these pages. Light a fire in our hearts for your living word. Increase grace to turn to you and not be distracted. Give us vision, insight and understanding that will keep us secure in the fear of the Lord. Thank you for the fruit that comes as we diligently seek you. We ask for wisdom in our homes, peace, brotherly love and affection, joy and a supernatural unity that testifies your Gospel to those around us louder than words ever could. Thank you for sanctifying our homes, our kitchens, our cars

, our bedrooms with your presence. Reveal yourself to our children so that they know the sweetness of your presence and the hollowness of what the world will offer them. You are the way, the truth and the life. We will follow you.

Christmas came and went. As the abundance of the season begins to wane, hearts and homes absorb the blessing and make way for something new.

We celebrated the boys turning two and four with smore’s and a bonfire then rolled right into Christmas celebrations. We’re still at the stage that despite thoughtful new things to play with, empty wrapping paper tubes remain king of the toys. Mental note for next year ;)

Heart

My husband and I were gifted this season with earlier than normal wake up times from the youngest two children. A five o’clock wake up call just feels a little early these days, but, alas. What felt like a bummer turned out to be my greatest highlight this Christmas. Every morning we woke up with the boys, started the fire, made them a quick breakfast to eat at their “living room table” and turned on a prayer and worship set on our lap top. Early mornings turned into sacred spaces over oatmeal, sippy cups and hot mugs of coffee.

Oh, it wasn’t always calm and bright, but more than not we witnessed our kids engaging amidst bites of eggs and playing with wooden trains. Our little drummer boy played along on his favorite ottoman, and the other snuck cuddles on our laps. Toward the end of our mornings we took communion together while the Christmas tree sparkled in the background.

We chose not to put any wrapped gifts under the tree until Christmas morning as a reminder that Jesus really is our treasure and our prize. Making room for him is our greatest privilege. Consistently “looking up” in this season has marked our family. The afterglow of December has been a desire for his presence rather than overindulgence or buyers remorse I’ve felt in the past. This is the spirit of Christmas.

“Therefore as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Colossians 2:6

To be rooted in something requires total submersion. Roots exposed create vulnerability. By God’s grace my roots have grown a little deeper this year and I stand a little taller. It seems that in order to do so there’s a militancy required. We are in a war. In the Western world the threat isn’t so much to our lives as much as it is to our attention. Pruning social media completely out of my life this year has been a tremendous blessing which has created more space for him to consume my attention and affection.

The reality of war doesn’t mean a life of somber trepidation, but of joy, thanksgiving and a living hope.

When I feel overwhelmed, abound in thanks.

When my kids try to drive me mad, abound in thanks.

When I feel insignificant, abound in thanks.

When I don’t know what to do, abound in thanks.

Home

After three years of settling in and completing some major house projects I’ve finally found time to embellish some of the walls in our home. My secret weapon? ChatGPT! It’s like having a stylist in your back pocket, and I’m here for it. A wall here, a corner there. Much of what I’ve put up I have had on hand and found new uses for old things. Remember, you can always patch a nail hole or move a picture. Whatever blank wall you’ve been staring at for the last 5 years, take the leap of faith and make something beautiful.

Health

The first thing I do in the morning is guzzle as much water as possible before my cup of coffee. I fill a 40oz water bottle with water, a teaspoon of chia seeds, a serving of Essential Amino Acids and a dash of sea salt. The chia helps to hydrate and add fiber, EAA’s provide the first serving of easily digestible protein and the sea salt adds mineral density.

The dead of winter kindles my passion for hot baths. Why not maximize this time with a gentle detox?

My Prayer

Lord thank you for another day with breath in our lungs. We marvel at your faithfulness that spans eternity. Give us right perspective to release what’s not ours to carry and teach us to rest in your sufficient grace. Holy Spirit teach us truth in our inmost being so we don’t get off course. Inspire within us divine vision for the year to come to abide continually with you. Lead us to others to whom we have divine assignments to accomplish. You are worthy of our attention and our affection. Thank you for loving us first so completely and perfectly.

This November marks three years and countless projects being in this home which has earned the name Revival Farmhouse. As this 1900 home has experienced transformation it’s been our dream that those that enter our home will also be transformed by God’s presence.

We’ve taken the approach with this house to honor the history of the home in keeping with the farmhouse feel. Warm wood tones, brick, wood floors and white walls to highlight these features.

Looking back at that first walk through I think I was captivated by visions of Joanna Gaines home transformations and blinded by the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. Turns out remodeling an old house isn’t as easy as a forty minute TV episode makes it out to be.

There are still a few last larger remaining projects but one hidden blessing of a prolonged remodel process are all the little joys along the way. So much pride and accomplishment in every piece of the puzzle rather than one massive overhaul where the little details can get overlooked.

July 4th, 2022 Cam and I got the keys to our “new” house and headed over after Fourth of July cinnamon rolls to start the arduous process of ripping carpet throughout the entire house and pulling staples revealing original wood floors. It felt like I was living in my own “Fixer Upper” episode. The trim, built ins, pocket doors and woodwork are all original.

Devastatingly, I lost all my “before” photos of the house from our initial walk through. Thankfully these photos of post-demo were taken by our friends JD and Lia who spent a week helping with the remodel. Thanks guys!

Radiators were removed throughout the house and replaced by new HVAC. The North kitchen window overlooks our backyard, grove and our skating pond in the Winter. We kept the cupboards and replaced hardware. The laminate floors were ripped out to match with the wood throughout the rest of the house.

Our kitchen island was converted from a God-sent Facebook Marketplace score. An early 1900’s buffet. The original hardware and stain match the built ins in the dining room perfectly. It has three deep drawers and plenty of storage below. The countertop was added to create another eating area in the kitchen.

• I fell in love with these Kohler brushed gold faucets for the sink and hand wash sink. I touch these about 3,456 times a day, it may as well be pretty.

• Cam and my father in law custom build these beautiful shelves out of Fir 2X12 boards. Open shelving becomes a canvas for using functional objects as decor. Unlike cupboards, they can’t gather clutter and stay organized.

• Cam build this custom vent hood from an image I found. It grounded the entire kitchen and created a cozy feel. We found porcelain tile from The Tile Store and I couldn’t be more pleased. It plays well off the stamped concrete in the entry and pantry and created such warmth.

• Quartz countertops were another game changer. We chose Custom Craft Countertops from Menards in “Coastal”. They shine and wipe up like a dream.

• It was mom’s idea to tie in the wanes coating on this walk through wall from the dining room. Cam and his dad masterfully built this custom console table that also functions as a coffee bar. The mirror was a room maker from Wayfair.

• The shelves are a beautiful backdrop for every season.

What I’ve learned but don’t think I’ve mastered is the art of contentment. Isn’t it interesting that after every checklist item completed another project idea rears its head, another thing to update, another inspiration strikes? “Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied.” Proverbs 27:20 Everything we see with our eyes is passing away. It’s how we choose to abide in it that will last. So although I’m so thankful for a beautiful space to abide and a place to continue to cultivate and improve I remind myself often that we already have all that we need.

There’s always something better, bigger, newer around the corner. On the days the creaks in the floor boards and upkeep of an old house threaten to grate on my nerves I’m thankful for the hard work of restoration this house has offered us. It’s a constant reminder that I too, am on a continual journey of transformation into who I was always created to be in Christ.

Cheers to making a house a home and the endurance and grit to do so. Also BIG kudos to my patient husband and industrious father in law for making all these visions in my head a reality through many hours of work!

The final bushels of grain are in our bins. A month bursting with honored house guests, warming meals and special treats. Gallons of homemade applesauce stored away in the freezer for a cold winter morning. Along with apple orchard glory and cousin time on the farm.

After three years on our property I’ve never welcomed cold weather more warmly in anticipation for the final freeze and subsequent death of insects!

October’s harvest sparked an anticipation for enjoying the bounty of the land, but also the Spirit. It seems as if everywhere I go there’s a curiosity or desire for deeper communion with the Lord. My heart has been overwhelmed by the truth and reality as scripture exposes who Holy Spirit is, what he does in and through believer’s lives and how to receive all he has by faith.

I’d like to dedicate this month’s post to Him, and along the way share little glimpses of my relationship with the Person of the Holy Spirit - and give every reader the opportunity to know him too.

I accepted Christ at four years old with my mom by my bedside. It’s my earliest significant memory. I became a new creation in Christ and my understanding would continue to increase with age.

I had a beautiful and stable church community. Our family was a part of the same church my entire childhood where I received a solid foundation of faith, Bible and Godly leadership examples.

One Sunday around the fifth grade there was an elderly couple from the church who came to our Sunday School class to do a simple teaching on the Holy Spirit and gave those of us in the class an opportunity to be prayed for to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. With childlike faith and zero religious stumbling blocks I went up for prayer and without smoke, dim lights or worship music playing this precious couple laid their hands and I received the infilling of Holy Spirit and my prayer language.

It was a profound experience that marked my faith journey and made everything I knew intellectually, my reality. I had a deep desire to read the Bible and a spiritual ability to apprehend beyond my young mind’s ability to understand.

From that moment, Holy Spirit has been my best friend. There are countless experiences from childhood through my adult years of being in His presence, sensing His power flowing through me for the glory of God and upbuilding of others. Like the Israelites I’ve had seasons of turning my back in rebellion but it never lasted long because I was so aware of his presence and love it made no sense to continue on in my own filth.

I’ve been in church circles where Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts are widely encouraged and taught and others where doctrine dictates interpretation. I’ve studied the scripture for myself and become firmly rooted in who Holy Spirit is and the gifts that he freely gives.

• Jesus himself, being already God, was baptized in water and the Holy Spirit as an example for us to follow. Luke 3:21-22, Acts 10:38

• Jesus breathed new life and the disciples received salvation after his resurrection. John 20:21-23

• Jesus then told his disciples to wait to begin their ministry until they were clothed with power by the Holy Spirit. Luke 24:49

• Pentecost was the fulfillment of Jesus’s promise to clothe the disciples in power, and in this instance the evidence was speaking in tongues. Acts 2

• Paul says that the gift of the Holy Spirit is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call. The Holy Spirit is for every believer from that time on. Acts 2:39

• Speaking in tongues, spiritual gifts and the their proper order are beautifully explained in 1 Corinthians 13 and 14.

By no means is this an exhaustive list of scripture pertaining to Holy Spirit, rather a sampling of the simplicity and clarity of how we as believers can humbly and simply receive power after our identity and authority are restored as children of God.

I cannot turn the Person of Holy Spirit into a theological debate. That would be like my husband sitting in the room while I tried to prove the significance of our relationship to a friend. All the while, he’s in the room and would probably want to join in the conversation!

I wake up in fellowship with Holy Spirit. I’m growing in praying without ceasing because of the gift of my prayer language. Praying in tongues unlocks the Word, it reveals mysteries (1 Corinthians 14:2), words of knowledge and insight come and it’s the ability to pray beyond the limitations of my own mind. I sing, I pray outloud, I pray in my mind. I’m constantly thanking him for his presence in my life, for his his nearness and that he will bring to my remembrance the word every day (John 14:26).

Many times in prayer with others I have no idea what to pray or what they need, but Holy Spirit is so faithful to reveal words of encouragement or knowledge that brings profound freedom or healing that only he could do! He is the river flowing out of me to display the glory of God to the world around me (John 7:38). Just the other week I was in the car with all my kids singing along to worship music. My daughter was sitting in the front seat. In the moment I put my hands on her and prayed in tongues out loud for about a minute. When I was done she said,” Mom when you were praying I felt my mouth completely heal!” She had been dealing with an annoying sore on both sides of her mouth. What a simple yet profound demonstration of God’s love and power for her personally.

So how do we receive the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit? It is not something to achieve, rather we receive. There’s two ways I see in scripture:

1. Simply ask. God is such a good Father and gives good gifts. It’s received by faith. All alone you could say from your heart, God thanks for your amazing Holy Spirit. Thank you that I’m part of your family. I want all there is and I want to be completely filled today and everyday with your Spirit. Baptise me with the Holy Spirit and release my prayer language in Jesus name! Open your mouth in faith and begin to speak to him.

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11-13

2. Laying of hands.

Any believer who has received this gift themselves can in faith lay their hands on another believer to receive. I like walking with people and demystifying their prayer language through this time of prayer together. It builds faith and confidence.

“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:14-17

I cannot fathom life without him. Everyday I want and need a new measure of Holy Spirit’s presence - without it my soul and body start fighting for position. I pray that we continue and increase our honor for who he is. To welcome him, what he wants to do and who he wants to reveal himself as. He is the best way, the only truth and life abundant.

“For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.” John 3:34

My Prayer,

Father, thank you so much for the gift of the person of Holy Spirit. Jesus thank you for telling us it’s better that you left so that we can each receive your spirit on this earth. Forgive us for doctrine that restrains you, for a will that wants to control you and a life that doesn’t submit to you. Holy Spirit, come like a flood, flow through us like a river and we will be satisfied forever with you as our source. Increase our awareness, increase our power, increase your glory through our lives. Thank you for filling each person who hungers and thirsts for righteousness, for they will be filled! I pray for each person who has asked for a fresh filling of your Spirit to encounter your love, freedom and presence like never before. Thank you that we will be together forever, my best friend, Holy Spirit.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:15-17

It was hot and windy the afternoon of September 10th. Harvest was just getting rolling and we were getting in the swing of long days. I was loading the boys up for the golf range when I got the text from my sister-in-law, Charlie Kirk had been shot on a Utah college campus. My heart sank, I immediately began to pray and honestly I believed he would recover. He can’t die, I thought.

I resisted the urge to get online. I just looked to Heaven.

Everything moved in slow motion as I tried my best to hit a few balls and make sure my boys didn’t whack each other in the meantime. For thirty minutes it felt like I was carrying one hundred pounds on my chest as I earnestly prayed.

We finished and loaded up into the car. Then the next text came, Charlie Kirk was no longer alive in this world. I grabbed my steering wheel in shock staring into nowhere until the little voices in the backseat chattered me back to this planet.

I had no idea, no clue, no insights into what had just happened other than a deep knowing in my spirit that something significant and historic just took place. I’ve never experienced personal shock or loss but I imagine it feels a sliver like what I experienced. My head and heart went numb while my body went through the motions. I had three hungry children and dinner to get on the table. Then the bedtime brigade. All the while my heart was heavy with sadness and disbelief.

It wasn’t until that evening when my husband and I began to pray that the tears came. Deep grief, empathy and sorrow that not only had a precious family just been robbed of a great treasure - so did our country. Yet, it felt as if our intercession was reaching beyond even that. Why was I experiencing this deep grief for someone I’d never met?

As the days progressed it seemed I wasn’t alone in the strange in that although I respected Charlie Kirk’s work I was not a consistent follower. Yet I felt as though I’d lost my own brother. I listened to a conversation with him and wife, Erika Kirk several months back and felt instantly tethered to this couple, so resolute in their faith, family and calling.

In the weeks that followed the afternoon of September 10th I have cried more tears than I have in a very long time. I wept through Erika’s address to the nation two days after her husband’s graphic murder. I wept through the Memorial Service as I witnessed a spiritual awakening before my very eyes. The moment Erika forgave the young man responsible for her husband’s death the power and love of the Gospel went forth into a hundred million hearts. Not only was salvation presented, so was the importance of discipleship and spiritual strength through the Word and prayer.

I’ve held my husband closer. I’ve slowed down putting my kids to bed. I’ve cried tears of gratitude laying next to them as they fell asleep beside me. I’ve been overwhelmed with God’s gracious gift of creating me, putting me on his intricate creation called Earth, and allowing me to taste of his goodness in this life before I live eternally in the next.

Thank God I’m off social media and my soul hasn’t been traumatized in the aftermath. I’ve escaped the inevitable raging storm of opinion following September 10th other than a few life-giving voices.

This summer I experienced a personal revival. The Gospel became my reality at a new level and the hunger for Him is unlike anything I’ve experienced. Nothing else comes close to satisfying like only he can and I pray for the grace to continue in the depths of pursuit of him. I’ve tasted and seen, and I know he is good.

I acknowledge there is unexplainable tragedy that floods into our ears and eyes everyday through news channels. There are many hurting, grieving and each life is significant and deserving of honor. What is it about Charlie’s life and martyrdom that has catalyzed something deep within my spirit I can’t explain? I believe I am but a drop in the sea of multitudes whose hearts have come alive in the wake of his death.

As I’ve pondered my intense and personal response to this immense tragedy this is why I’ve wept.

Sentiment: I’m the same age as Erika Krik and have children the same ages as hers. As a wife and mother I can deeply empathize with what a tremendous sorrow it would be to walk through the loss of a husband who earnestly loved God and loved me and my children and continuing a life without his presence.

The Future: Charlie Kirk’s anointed work in the trenches standing for truth in culture, family, faith and government and rallying an entire generation toward the good and the beautiful was suddenly stolen. His influence among world leaders and coalition building was rare and of significant consequence.

Counting the Cost: Like never in my life I’ve sat with the reality of the cost of following Jesus. Would I be okay if I lost those most dear to me? If I lost everything? I am convinced that he is absolutely worthy of any price.

The Church: I’ve wept for the state of the Church. Is She ready? We know a lot of truth, but has it transformed us into happy warriors willing to follow him and carry our cross? Precious brothers and sisters in Christ have and continue to face fierce persecution all around the world. The reality of their suffering and subsequent glory is overwhelming.

What Was: I have this sense that everything has changed. I believe we’re entering a season where this scenario may not be the last. As Believer’s this life is not all there is - we’re living for something greater than this life. The days of “cheap Christianity” are over.

God’s Love: In the face of this I have experienced yet again the reality and strength of God’s love. I can believe it by faith, know it, agree with it, but experiencing his love compels me to crawl out of hiding to share it with others. At any cost.

We grieve, yet not like those who have no hope.

“Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalms 30:5b I suspect for many of us and certainly Charlie’s family there will be a season of weeping - but joy will dawn. This is my prayer and personal charge in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s death. Time will tell that a seed of revival and reformation is taking root. Fight as he may, the enemy and those on his side, are only and always a losing proposition.

For Erika. I’ve never met this woman but my prayers in the spirit are constantly set toward her. May the strength and magnitude of God’s unfailing love which is better than life itself consume her and her children. (Psalm 63:3) May God set the mantle to continue their ministry like a crown of glory in which nothing can stand against.

For the Church. As believers we must sprint to the secret place with Jesus and get in His Word for the sake of knowing him. We must be people to run with him and in him and apprehend things by the spirit not by our screens. “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14 When tests come, when inevitable chaos ensues we must be in submission to the head, which is Christ alone for our marching orders.

For Eternity. We must grasp a higher perspective. If we get trapped in the present and covet our possessions and relationships above the Lord we are sitting ducks for deception and disappointment. Let’s look through a lens of eternity, compelled by love, without fear of man. Let’s not imitate those in the world. “Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.” Philippians 3:19b-20a

For Family. As Erika so beautifully charged both men and women in her message at her husband’s memorial, family is the ultimate representation to the world that God is real and he is good. A God-centered marriage has the potential to radiate the glory of God. As we raise God-fearing children we disciple the nations. Let’s take our roles as fathers and mothers seriously and sacredly and not sacrifice our family on the altars of achievement. Revival starts in living rooms and at dinner tables.

For Your Lane. We each have our lane of influence, skill and gifting. Raise a bunch of Gospel-loving kids. Start a Bible study. Begin a Turning Point Chapter. Run for the school board. Speak up in your church. Love your family. Start a great company. Join a prayer group. Vote. Listen and obey. Change the world around you through the power of the Holy Spirit. Find your lane, and be faithful.

In my own minuscule way I will honor Charlie Krik’s life by doing these things but above all for the love of honoring my King. I pray you do the same.

My Prayer,

God, thank you for inviting us off the sidelines into the game. Thank you that there is no fear in love. You never fail, never give up, believe the best, hope in all things and endure any circumstance. Thank you for pouring out your hope in Erika’s heart through the power of the Holy Spirit and giving her divine insight and vision. You are a father to the fatherless and defender of widows. Defend her cause and make her face shine. May the Gospel fall on good soil in many hearts. Prepare us as your Bride to welcome many brothers and sisters in Christ. Give us clarity in our lanes as to how we can partner with you to display your transforming love. You are the strength of our hearts and our portion, forever.

You are worthy of it all Jesus.

Health

It’s settled. I will be a vegetarian a few weeks out of the year and live off of fresh garden produce. In the meantime, while our baby garden expands we’re thankful for the abundance from other’s yields.

First up I must share a no-fail muffin recipe we’ve been enjoying this month as early apple harvests come in. These are extra special made with homemade sauce although I’m confident store bought sauce will suffice.

Cinnamon Apple Oat Muffins

• 2 cup applesauce

• 6 tbsp olive oil

• 1/4 cup milk of choice

• 4 tsp pure vanilla extract

• 4 tsp apple cider vinegar

• 2 cup oat flour (finely blend 2 cups dry oats to make your own)

• 1/4 cup sugar (double if you prefer more sweet)

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tsp each: baking soda and baking powder

• 1/2 tsp cinnamon

• Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon sugar

Bake at 350* for 20 minutes, check for doneness.

Next up is this Apple Quinoa Salad. I changed nothing other than using roasted almonds instead of walnuts because it’s what we had on hand. It’s a meal in itself or top with chicken and extra greens.

Heart

During a recent morning visit to our friend’s house we enjoyed a garden tour. They took us through what reminded me of a Secret Garden. Trellis tunnels dripping with cucumbers. Vibrant flowers lining rows of carrots. Large pumpkins slowly finding their way to ripeness, and purple peas towering amidst vertical grates. My kids had fire in their eyes as they realized these plants were ripe for the eating and our friends graciously let them graze and sent us home with an armful of abundance. Next year plenty of basil and tomatoes is priority to ensure plenty of fresh Caprese…Mama Mia!

The abundance of the season is evident all around. The hard work of sowing, watering, weeding is coming together in fruitfulness. It’s a season to receive. To taste and see that the Lord is good. To be nourished. Whether a person is the greenest thumb or in the depths of a city jungle the garden makes our souls come alive. The Garden is our origin story and our destiny.

• We were created in a garden - the Garden of Eden.

• We were chosen in a garden - the Garden of Gethsemene.

• We were redeemed in a garden - the Garden of the empty Tomb.

• We are destined for a garden - the Garden in Heaven, the Paradise of God.

To know Jesus is to know Eternal Life. “Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” John 17:3 Although our bodies await the perfection of Heaven we embrace the continual feast of Heaven now.

We face the brokenness of earth yet reach for the ripe fruit of harvest that feeds our soul. We endure hardship while experiencing heavenly fragrances bringing joy to our hearts. We remain diligent in the mundane while our spiritual eyes apprehend radiant colors that rouse new life in our bones.

Just like my friends who labored to tend the garden we freely enjoyed, Jesus, the Master Gardener, has created an Eden of His presence for us to enjoy. Any time, anywhere. How sad to have the key to a Secret Garden and throw it away? We are refreshed in the Garden and transformed by the nourishment of love.

Take the keys, open the door, let wonder lead you along his paths of His decadent delights.

He’s the one your heart is longing for.

A Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence in our lives. Open up our spiritual understanding and awareness of you Kingdom at bloom all around us. May we feast on the abundance of Heaven throughout our days and become a garden for others to be nourished. May we taste and see that you are good. We confess that nothing else in the world can come close to satisfying us like you do. Give us a strategy to getaway with you in Secret Gardens and feast on the goodness of your house. Thank you for the abundance of the land that we get to enjoy as a foreshadow of the eternal reward to come - unhindered fellowship with you.

We have the fruit of our labors overflowing to the brim safely in the confines of our freezers. Seventy-five, well-fed chickens made it to the end. I was shocked to pick my first zucchini in our “baby step” garden and promptly whipped up a batch of muffins. You would have thought Julia Child herself was galavanting about my kitchen with the pride that swelled in my heart. My swing is slowly improving with golf lessons this summer with my daughter. It took thirty-five years to come to the conclusion that walking + outdoors + balls + family = fun. Living next to a golf course and being married to an excellent golfer also helps.

Our three year old learned to ride a bike. We turned a quick weekend family gathering in the Twin Cities into an unexpected week long getaway. I’m hoping the smell of chlorine wanes after summer with being at the pool so often. The dog days of summer.

Health

Chia seed water is still in full swing oer here. I don’t think I can go back. (Check out March’s post for details.) Vitamin D uptake is going strong. Daily walks, regular paddleboards and weekly weight training sessions are the preferred mode of movement. Daily doses of fresh milled grains, raw milk smoothies and protein balls (see May’s post for recipe) fuel summer days. Here’s the real kicker though this month…taco night with homemade shells. 😍 Nutrient density bonus if made with fresh milled grains. My next kitchen appliance will be a tortilla press for our weekly taco nights. Here is the recipe we’ve been so happy with. *Cook them less time than you think!

Heart

I have vivid memories in elementary school having random laugh attacks. A friend would say something, or something would strike my funny bone and I would spin into uncontrollable laughter. I sincerely didn’t want to cause distraction or disrespect but nothing other than a bucket of cold water on my head could quench my giggles. More than once I was sent out of the classroom to take a walk.

These instances came to my mind recently because I’ve noticed myself laughing more. Not just a chuckle but a belly engaged laughter stemming from unhindered joy. It’s sad that it’s almost caught me off guard. Where was my joy hiding? Call it the season of life rearing littles or life's reality sapping hope or drudgery from the grind of the mundane.

The truth? Jesus has transformed me and the reality of my salvation is settling deep within my spirit as the Holy Spirit breathes life within me. Before Christ I owed so much there is no way I could pay it back. Then he cancelled my debt. Before Christ my hope abided in my circumstances. Now my hope is on the One who never changes. Before Christ I lived for myself. Now I’m alive to love you. Before I was enslaved to fear of what other people thought. Now His Word has the final say about who I am. Before God’s attitude toward me was a “yes, no, maybe so”. Now it’s “yes in Christ” and I say, “amen to the glory of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:20

It’s the simple Gospel, received like a child. I’ve lost all right to have a bad day. Dead to me but alive in Christ. Nothing in all creation can separate me from Love. Isn’t it funny? Joy is springing up as the response.

We’ve been working on completing our kitchen - I’m excited to share with you the end result soon. In the process I’ve been moving things around and reorganizing. Something I never dread but am surprised how often I find myself at it again. I don’t have any revelatory organizing tips at this moment other than, expect to do it often or at least seasonally. Kids hit different stages requiring different flows, the seasons shift which changes what we use or how we use them, we acquire new things forcing us to (ideally) reckon with what we already own. Instead of dreading yet another closet refresh or pantry cleanout, see it as just another opportunity to prune, podcast, and serve the family as we make things efficient, beautiful and functional. Even if they don’t say so, an environment of order and beauty is a tremendous gift to everyone! Cheers to one organized drawer at a time ;)

A Prayer

Jesus, you are our source of all joy and hope. Holy Spirit, bubble up within us your truth in our hearts. Make it our reality that supersedes any circumstance. Transform us into the women you paid the highest price for us to become, in mind, body and spirit. Every one of your promises is a “yes” and “amen”! Thank you for your love, we receive it and every one of your great and precious promises. We declare that our joy can never be taken away. Let it bubble, let us giggle, and wrap us in your glorious presence.

[My greatest birthday gifts.]

• Walked 10 miles to church for the first outside service of the summer

• Turned 35

• Took my first “aquacise” class at the community pool

• Moved the boys into the same room

• Was without a cellphone for a week

In case you’re wondering, I highly recommend misplacing your cellphone for a minimum of 5 days. We were on the way back from a church service in the Twin Cities, stopped at a restaurant and ate on our way home. In the excitement of it all and trying to finagle feeding three children and a husband on the road I didn’t realize I had left it until we were an hour and a half into the trip. Long story short it took five days to retrieve it.

I sincerely do not think we comprehend just how distracted and overly connected we are. Cam and I laughed having to share a phone and verbally communicate where I’d be, when. I admit I didn’t venture too far out of town without Maps. ;)

I’m thankful for the spiritual reboot and the soulish pruning. We as a human race can in fact survive without our iPhones.

Something shifted in June, did you feel it? A spiritual shift. June 1st was Pentacost - no coincidence. I’ve known the Lord for the majority of my life yet it’s as if He’s peeling back veils I didn’t even know were on and letting me know by the Spirit the reality of the Gospel.

I’ve read through the Bible multiple times and been in the Word consistently since age 5, yet more than ever before it’s alive, it’s transformative, and it’s becoming my REALITY.

Back to first love. (Revelation 2) This is what the Lord is stirring in me right now. His Spirit is allowing me to grasp new depths of revelation like: I’ve been transferred out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. (Colossians 1:13) I have been born of God, changing my DNA, my inheritance, my literal identity. (John 1:13) Through his cross Jesus made me holy, blameless and above reproach before my Heavenly Father. (Colossians 1:22-23) The same power that raised Christ from the dead is living within me. (Romans 8:11)

Fruitfulness has been the result as the simplicity of the Gospel has exploded in my heart. Abiding in Him and the truth of His word. Things I’ve longed to see manifested through me are happening as He is perfecting love within me.

Here are a few of the catalysts to the spiritual shift I’ve experienced:

• Communing with God through His word

  • Instead of reading the Bible like a history book or a daily checklist I’m becoming accustomed to pausing and making verses personal. Thanking Him for what He did, for growing me up in the Truth, and worshiping Him. This is true communion with the Lord and actually changes our perspective, strengthens faith and transforms our lives.

• Turning off all other inputs

  • Deleting social media was the start. It’s a season where I’ve also paused other inputs almost entirely like podcasts, shows, movies and books other than the Bible. (We have enjoyed season five of The Chosen!) I believe He wants to take you and I to a new place in Him which at times require a militant focus. His grace is large, and motivated by love time with him becomes like literal food, not religiosity.

• Every answer is found in Him

  • “Seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you…” Matthew 6:33 I have things I want answers to, resolution for and solutions in. I tend to spend a lot of time pursuing them. When I believe Christ IS my life, when I believe he IS the source, Jesus IS the wisdom and power of God, I can take a big inhale. I keep my eye on Him and know He will deliver, heal, provide, encourage, set free.

The Challenge: Make it personal.

It freaks me out that I could read the Bible my whole life, sit under anointed preaching, and never change. If I don’t take ownership of MY faith and spend the discipline of TIME to receive personal revelation of the Word - I may intellectually increase but my love will run dry leaving a trail of destruction, not fruit.

I don’t want the seven Son’s of Sceva to be my legacy.

Here’s their story:

“A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!” Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered.” Acts 19:13-16

First, these religious boys “tried” using the name of Jesus like a good luck charm, not faith. At best it was an experiment to see if his name held power. Second, their revelation of Jesus was the One of “who Paul preached”, there was no personal revelation or conviction. Lastly, the demons did in fact respond to Jesus’ name but they did not submit to Sceva’s sons because they recognized that Christ was on their lips, not within their hearts. The result was a swift and violent beating from a demonic force who took advantage of an opportunity to kill, steal and destroy.

I don’t want to try, I want faith that moves mountains.

I don’t want to rely on others' revelation, I want my own history with Jesus and His Word.

I don’t want to be lion food, I want to walk securely in Christ’s power and authority.

Make it personal. A day with Him is better than a thousand anywhere else. The luxury of our Western Culture so easily entangles and woos us to sleep. I want to be wide awake, making daily sacrifices to silence the distraction and excess to allow space for Jesus to transform me by love.

My Prayer,

Father, thank you for your love. Holy Spirit make your Words my reality. Help me see you rightly. Strengthen and enlarge my Spirit to receive from you. Show me how to live, which paths to take. Strengthen my resolve that in you is everything I need. Thank you for all the ways you reveal yourself day by day. Open my eyes to your hand upon my life and give me wisdom of how I can help others see. Continue to draw others that are hungering and thirsting for righteousness, and they will be filled!

[When church is in the country, the best way to get there is to walk.]

If peonies don’t bring a smile to your face I don’t know how to help.

I’m here to confess that zero out of sixteen seeds that I tried to start sprouted. Then I planted a few seeds in the ground. Every morning for a number of days I looked like Eeyore shuffling out to the garden with a rain cloud over my head doubting any of those would pop through either. Then one miraculous morning I spotted something I was pretty sure was not another weed… nope, it was a… zucchini sprout! In an instant I could almost taste the zucchini bread I would soon make slathered with butter. Oh me of little faith. Then the squash started to appear, along with cucumbers, beans and even some flowers I thought were never going to grow.

On a more hopeful note we’re doing a pretty good job keeping around one hundred chickens alive. Each morning we head out for chick chores and marvel how these little fluff balls grow like literal weeds.

You won’t eat 100% of the zucchinis you never plant! Yet, I planted each of those seeds in doubt. Instead of having faith in this ancient, time-tested process and sowing with joy I was fixated on my inability and sowed in doubt. Not to over-spiritualize my rookie gardening experience other than it points toward a deeper reality the Holy Spirit has been opening up to me this month. The importance of perspective.

Heart

The motive of my heart is revealed in my reaction to life's circumstances. The way I “see” dictates how I will respond. The kids had great attitudes today, so did I! We have to save up more money and hold off on house renovations for now, I’m discouraged. The kids got sick, we canceled a trip, I got in a mood. A friend called to share a struggle and asked for prayer, I’m concerned. Each scenario is part of something called life. If I look at them through the lense of my ability, comfort, capacity my feelings will dictate. If I, however, look through the lense of the Gospel, my response of faith releases grace. If the old me is dead I now live through Christ and follow Him. If I’m not here to love my own life but alive to demonstrate His love to you, then the only right I have is a response of faith.

If my eye or my perspective is right, then my whole body (everything else) will find its right place.

“The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive, focused on God], your whole body also is full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. But when it is bad [spiritually blind], your body also is full of darkness [devoid of God’s word]. Be careful, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness.” Luke 11:34-35 AMP

How we see is everything. Saying farewell to social media has cut off a tremendous amount of noise in my heart, allowing more room for truth to bloom in my heart. Yet I long to give him every crack and crevice of my life to where overflow is inevitable.

By grace, through faith the kid’s attitudes don’t dictate my mood. By grace I’m content with what I have. By grace I care for my kids because it’s my privilege and I praise God that He’s growing our faith to a place where sickness loses any authority in our home altogether. By grace I pray for my friend in faith and point her to the Truth that sets her free.

I’m drawing a line in the sand that the old me is dead and I am alive in Christ and by His grace and mercy I will continue to grow in understanding.

Let’s talk about sanctifying our kid’s clothes shall we? ;) I love season changes because it’s an opportunity for a fresh perspective. Kid’s clothes are one of those areas that need constant attention.

My kid’s clothes philosophy:

1. Only keep a small handful of sentimental items for each child.

2. Once a child outgrows their clothes we give them away or sell.

   Kid’s clothes are a dime a dozen! I find between generous grandparents, friends, garage sales or thrift stores there is no shortage of clothes for very reasonable prices. For me not having to store excess clothes outweighs keeping bins of clothes for future kids.

3. For each season I put out a small but sufficient “wardrobe” that easily fits in a drawer or hangs in a closet that the child can pick out themselves.

   For my young sons this might be: 4 pairs of shorts, 5 t-shirts, 3 pairs of pants, 2 nice outfits for church, 1 rain jacket, 2 sweatshirts.

For me this means less laundry, tidier rooms and the kid’s self-confidence to get dressed and ready for the day. At the end of the season I give away what’s in good condition, put away what may fit next season and toss anything that got worn to a thread. Everyone and every kid has different preferences, find some version of simplicity that brings a sense of calm to your home.

In the Kitchen

This month Cam finished up planting. We had our first morning at the beach. Meals are a little less planned and more simple as we transition to life “outdoors”. Park play dates, beach trips and field work require quick snacks on the go. This month I’m sharing our protein ball recipe that tastes more like eating a cookie. 🙂

Peanut Butter Protein Balls

• 5 C organic oats

• ½ C honey

• 1.5 C peanut butter

• 6 T freshly ground flaxseed

• 1/4 C coconut oil

• 1/2 t sea salt

• 2 T beef gelatin or collagen protein powder

• 1 C mini chocolate chips (optional)

*Pro Tip: Blend the oats into flour with a high powered blender before mixing ingredients for more of a cookie dough texture.

Mix all ingredients (easiest in a stand mixer) and use a cookie scoop to roll balls. Store in the freezer.

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to you moms! I wish I could take each of you, grab your face and tell you how significant and eternal and wonderful your role as a mother is. How His grace is so sufficient for you each day. That your joy doesn't have to be dictated by what does or doesn’t get done, but that you can be so hidden in Christ that His joy is your strength and his Word is your food. And even so, I hope your coffee stays strong and your sourdough tastes rich! You are highly favored and in due time your children rise up and call you blessed.

My Prayer

God, we ask that your Holy Spirit would come and illuminate your truth to us. Give us right perspective to see you rightly. Any area that has become darkened by wrong thinking, illuminate with your word. We thank you that we are growing up in our faith and we are looking more and more like our Daddy every day. Thanks God that when you see us you see Christ. Thanks God that you’re excited to meet with us and talk with us every day. We lay down our own lives so that we can live in yours. It’s our joy to follow you and pick up our cross. Whatever you’re doing, saying, going we’re there too, following right behind. Thanks for grace and clear eyes.

The garden plans are sketched, seeds gathered and our broilers (meat chickens) are on their way. Homeschool and Holy Week are coming to an end, but divine expectation and His presence in my spirit only grows.

Recently I heard the Lord say, “It’s time to dream again!”. Previous to moving almost three years ago I was ripe with vision. Yet, ever since it’s been one of transition, growing roots and growing our family. I joke that we have been in “surthrival”, thriving in our survival. Remodels, starting a business, having children all take their toll while other seeds of dreams get buried and die.

Until that moment where divine timing and revelation dampen that seed, bringing it back to life and growing roots that soon begin to burst forth.

Seven years ago this month I released my first book, Food Freedom: Stop Hiding and Uncover Who You’re Meant to Be. A personal testimony of deliverance from disordered eating and a practical guide to walking out vibrant health with a Biblical foundation. I was less than a year postpartum with my first child when I started writing so it’s geared towards mothers and their families. Earlier this month I was invited to share my testimony again at a group of moms in the Twin Cities.

Seven years later the humble words in this book still ring true and I believe have a thread of revelation throughout. After all, our testimonies are divine weapons for overcoming. (Revelation 12:11) I shared with this group 4 Pillars of Vibrant Health referenced in Food Freedom. This month I would like to highlight a practical tool in each of these categories that I trust will be of encouragement on your health journey this Spring. You will find much more along with a fuller context in the book itself or in my former podcast, The Well Women Co Podcast.

Rest

Have you ever considered that a day actually begins the evening before? Genesis 1:5 says, “God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” If we desire to keep in alignment with God’s ways, we always begin with and from rest. It’s His natural order and when we forsake this original design, at some point will be compromised in our mind, body or spirit. When it comes to our health, sleep is the absolute foundation for healing and wellbeing. While we sleep our bodies heal, detoxify, rebalance hormones, improve immune function, grow brain cells, keep arteries clear, and naturally aid in a healthy weight. Rest is the first strategy to employ and prioritize in any healing or health journey.

What would you need to prioritize or shift this week to get an extra 30 minutes to 1 hour of sleep each night? How could this one shift impact your health?

Mindset

If rest is the foundation, then mental soundness is the supporting beams. A firm foundation is crucial but without beams all you have is a parking lot! What you think about your food and your body is as important as the food itself. John writes a profound key for us in 3 John 2, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (NIV) The key is this: to the degree that your mind is well determines the capacity of your physical health . Every New Age guru knows this to be true but it’s a Gospel truth treasure awaiting God’s Sons and Daughters to lay hold of.

What’s to be our mode of operation when it comes to our body? We operEAT from a place of love and gratitude, not scarcity and fear. I’d rather eat a cookie in gratitude than a plate full of kale in fear. The body can tell the difference and will have a different hormonal and metabolism response as a result. Check out Alia Crum’s *“Milkshake Study” that proves this to be true…

Can you identify one negative thought you have been believing about your body or health? What is the truth? Practice speaking the truth over that area this week!

Nourishment

If I wrote another book I’d breach the subject of “food theology.” Jesus is the original foodie. He calls himself the Bread of Life. He led his people into a land flowing with milk and honey. He took communion with his disciples with elements of bread and wine. He placed the first family into a garden and it’s all wrapped up in Revelation at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb! If you’re like me it’s easy to take control of physical health and think somehow the dietary advice in the Bible is “outdated”, especially because food quality today is different from the primarily unadulterated food during Biblical times.

What if the Bible isn’t an outdated nutrition manual? What if there were keys to our physical flourishing in the midst of these living pages? I encourage you to start taking notice every time food is mentioned in the Bible. You may be surprised. As Believers, we should be wary of any “expert” or diet counter to Biblical wisdom.

If the Father said, “It is good”, about His creation, then every whole food grown or raised on planet earth would be good. Food made in a lab should not be considered food at all and deviates from God’s intention of “life and life to the full” (John 10:10). Figuring out a healthful diet should be simple with this one idea. Enjoy an abundance of whole food ingredients, avoid “fake food” ingredients and substitutes.

Let’s make the case for the value of freshly milled whole grains. A kernel of wheat consists of three components; bran, germ and endosperm. In commercial milling the bran and germ are sifted out so the flour or bread product does not spoil due to the naturally occurring oil. Only the endosperm is left which consists of protein and starch. All the beneficial components in the bran and germ are removed including vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytonutrients, digestive enzymes, and important fatty acids like vitamin E. White flour and bread products are essentially devoid of these important vitamins, minerals and digestive aids. When freshly milled, whole grains contain perfect proportions of all of these things leading to proper digestion, mineral absorption and a healthy diet. Once the kernel of wheat is broken open (in milling) as much as 45% of the nutrients are oxidized, in the first day alone. In 3 days, just 72 hours later, 90% of the nutrients are lost, all because of oxidation.

Our family has been milling our own grain for the past six months with wonderful results. Grain mills are easy to use and a worthwhile investment. Simply swapping freshly milled flour with any recipe could have a profound impact on you and your family’s health. For more bread testimonies and information check out Sue Becker’s Podcast.

Jesus knew what He was comparing himself to. He didn’t call him the lamb chop of life or the cheese of wonder. He chose bread…I wonder why?

Take a Spring cleaning inventory of your pantry and refrigerator. Are there any “fake foods” or imposter ingredients on your labels? I challenge you to toss them and begin building fresh with whole foods and simple ingredients. Search Pinterest for simple healthy recipes that appeal to you or snack ideas to get you started.

Movement

During a homeschool seminar this Spring I learned that walking in nature for only one hour reduces cortisol levels for the next seven days! I see you heading for your walking shoes now.. In Dan Buettner’s studies of “Blue Zones” ( the highest populations centers around the world with the most number of centurions), walking was one of the key indicators for longevity and health.

We tend to make exercise complicated. Move your body. Do what you love. If you’re in doubt take a walk every day and if you want to take things to the next level focus on strength training 2-3 days per week (20-30 minutes per session). Focus on form and gradually increasing weight so you hit a max ability of 6-10 repetitions. I like Dr. Stacy Sims research-based approach to women’s fitness. I also have enjoyed Lindsey Bombgren’s free workout videos online.

As we age, maintaining and building muscle mass is critical. Not only for a leaner physique that feels comfortable in clothes, can carry heavy children and grocery bags but for bone density among many other factors. Plus, setting this example for our kids is so important. It’s a form of discipleship as are each pillar of vibrant health. More is caught than taught. I strap on my one year old and go for walks as my three year old bikes behind. When my husband and I head to the home gym usually the kids follow. Having a habit of going outside to play leads to an active lifestyle for our kids to build strength, dexterity and imagination.

Building muscle requires enough resistance and adequate protein.

Take an assessment of your weekly movement. What is one way you can incorporate more intentional movement this Spring throughout your week? Is it more walking, finding a strength training plan or something else you enjoy? Schedule it!

April was a longer post, I know! Thanks for sticking with me. I yearn for women to walk in freedom in their health in order to walk in strength and stamina in their God-given destinies. Women are the gatekeepers of our homes and the primary influence of health for their families. Food, health and body image can be extremely emotional, at times wrapped in shame and regret.

Culture's way is restriction laced with anxiety but the Kingdom way is life, satisfaction and abundance. Let’s shun unrealistic expectations of a very loud and opinionated world around us and narrow in with trust that God cares about and wants to lead us by the hand into a spacious place of abundant life.

Father, help us see as you see. Not fixated on the outward appearances but prioritizing our whole heart toward you. Holy Spirit leads us into the way everlasting. Highlight what needs to go, bring into our hands what we do need. We give you control of our physical health and repent for taking it into our own hands. By your stripes we are healed. We thank you for the precious blood of Jesus that covers over us and our families. Thank you for taking us to a new level of grace this Spring to steward the bodies you've given us on this earth. We bless our body. We bless our mind. We bless our spirit.

[Homemade graham crackers with freshly milled flour has been a snack staple this month.]

It’s March 12th and I noticed red buds protruding from our big oak tree in the backyard. Just in time for an obnoxious March blizzard. A new resolve to become the master gardener I’ve always dreamed bubbles to the surface. Mind you, I have never once single handedly grown anything edible whatsoever. Unless you count the superfluous dandelions that adorn our yard. By the way, I will absolutely be harvesting and eating dandelions this year. My inner critic relents to the possibility that perhaps I do have what it takes to keep chickens alive. A heaviness I wasn’t even aware I carried slips off my shoulders as the Spring sun warms my face. We’ve come out of hibernation to play at local parks and as a result have had more impromptu fun and new friends. A reminder that the long, cold, inwardly-focused days of Winter will not last forever. In fact, every season will come to an end.

Heart

As Spring peeks its head around the corner so has about one hundred ideas for homesteading, house projects and ministry waved “hello”. As I sit with them all swirling in my head it ends in a headache. As I read Jesus’s Parable of the Lamp in Mark, his words overwhelm me with hope that in Him is all the understanding and discernment I will ever need.

I have been challenged this month to physically pause three times a day. Morning, afternoon and evening. Like, actually lay down, for ten minutes. No books, podcasts, music, text messages. Nothing. (Other than periodically getting climbed on by one kid while another tries to sneak in a nursing session or simultaneously refereeing a sibling tiff from my perch on the couch.) I get quiet, still my breath and look to the Lord. This simplistic yet profound practice has been a practical fleshing out of what it looks like to “pay close attention to what you hear” for me. It’s been in these times I get clarity as to what is truly important for the day and my next set of tasks to execute. I get creative ideas. I have space to pray for others. I turn my thoughts toward gratitude. As a result my body takes the cue to dial down, get out of fight or flight, and embrace an attitude of rest. Mind, body, spirit.

Health

Walking and movement is a cornerstone of my life. I recently listened to an interesting podcast with Primal Foods founder Mark Sisson about the power of walking. He makes the case that running is bad for most people. Offensive to some of us road warriors, I know. This compelling conversation made me feel a bit better because it’s this time of year I get the itch to run a marathon - but I think I’ll stick to my daily walk for now. In an attempt to hydrate smarter, I’ve incorperated a new morning routine: chia seed water. Thankfully the result is not growing hair like a chia pet. In William Siff’s book, The Plant Medicine Protocol he shares,

“Consuming this viscous plant water facilitates deep, whole-body hydration; soothes and revitalizes the mucous membranes lining the GI tract; and provides a source of nourishment to the beneficial bacteria of the microbiome.”

Chia seeds are a great source of fiber and protein. One tablespoon provides 5-6 grams soluble fiber and 2-3 grams protein along with omega-3 fatty acids and trace minerals.

I’ve adapted my own drink from The Plant Medicine Protocol by combining about 2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon chia seeds and a splash of lemon juice and dash of Redmond’s Sea Salt for added minerals. Mix, let sit for a minute and drink. The chia seeds will clump up so keep stirring. Many days I’ll make another mid afternoon when I feel like a bar of chocolate but realize I’m just thirsty.

Recently I’ve favored make-your-own bowls of all sorts. Mainly because preparing a certain recipe each night got old. I prepare a base like rice or quinoa I have on hand, or prepare beans or lentils. I roast veggies and top with some sort of meat or nuts and seeds. Simple dressing like olive oil, salt, nutritional yeast, ketchup or balsamic are just fine. What makes these bowls the bomb is the addition of a homemade slaw. Not the refined oil laden variety, but something nourishing and homemade. Enter this Simple Asian Red Cabbage Slaw. I dressed with Spicy Nut Butter Sauce I adapted from a cookbook I’ve been enjoying lately, Beat Cancer Kitchen by Chris and Micah Wark.

Simple Asian Red Cabbage Slaw

For the salad:

• 1 head small red cabbage thinly sliced

• 4 large carrots shredded

• ½ red onion thinly Sliced

• 1 cup cilantro chopped

• ½ cup sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds

For the Dressing:

• ½ cup almond, tahini or peanut butter

• 3 tablespoons coconut aminos

• 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

• 1 tablespoon maple syrup

• 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

• ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper

• 1 large garlic clove, minced

• 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger

Use a food processor to quickly slice and grate salad ingredients. For the dressing, whisk together and dress the salad to your liking. There may be extra leftovers that can be stored in the fridge. Add to salads, brown rice noodles, grain bowl or use as a dipping sauce for chicken.

Home

Leadership is a theme on my heart this month. Many may not identify motherhood as a role of leadership, however, I can see almost no greater application for such skill. I know by now that typically behaviors or habits my children develop stem from me, good or bad.

• Not communicating tasks clearly and being frustrated by the lack of follow through.

• My own lack of follow through in carrying out swift consequences.

• Failing to manage my attitude and the tone of the home suffers as a result.

• Being ill prepared in the morning because of a lack of preparation or plan the night before.

• Complaining and nit picking instead of an attitude of gratitude.

Thankfully the reverse of all these scenarios can also be true.

I’ve noticed almost every time I take a 10 minute break and lay down my kids follow suit. They relax because I relax. They lay down because I lay down. Doing what is innate inside of them, following the leader.

So what sort of leader am I becoming? Becoming, what a splendid word. Exposed character flaws, all opportunities to journey forward on the continuum of leadership. Here are a few very tangible ways I’m becoming a stronger leader at home.

• The premier time for attentive read-alouds are amidst a delectable and prolonged snack time. To have said snack time, I must have forethought and nourishing snacks on hand to give! (Cheese sticks, muffins, protein balls, fried salami, banana bread, homemade crackers, dried fruit, toast or chocolate milk/hot cocoa.)

• The more I prepare and plan the night before the better the morning will go! The kitchen is clean and put away. There’s a direction of what’s for breakfast the next morning. Perhaps I soak a pot of oats and have it ready on the stove to start in the morning. Laundry is folded and put away. A school plan is written out for Haven to see in the morning. Meat is thawing in the refrigerator for meals the following day.

• Taking short times to stop and pause throughout the day as I’ve mentioned previously to gather my thoughts and let accumulating stress or overstimulation dissipate.

• Complete the “loop”. An idea expressed by David Allen in his book, Getting Things Done. As a multitasking, multi passionate woman I can tend to go about my days with a lot of half finished tasks. Laundry folded in the basket but not put away. Reorganizing a random drawer and leaving a handful of items without a new home sitting out on the counter. Dishes from three different baking project on the counter. The dirty diaper only made it halfway to the trash can in the other room. Finishing a task creates clearer head space.

• Making space for a healthy morning routine, drinking a big glass of water, having a nourishing breakfast, taking supplements. Prioritizing personal Bible time, journaling and movement throughout the day.

• Leading a Bible time at breakfast. Expressing my genuine desire to seek the Lord, worship and pray throughout the day out loud paves the way for kids to get swept up in the goodness of God.

I get it. None of it is revolutionary. Layering one discipline at a time over time is what becoming looks like. One day we wake up and realize these habits became part of our DNA. That’s the long game I’m after. Sure, there will always be a stray sock somewhere on the floor in my home, but unlike that sock, my life will have a fragrance of Heaven.

Lord, thank you for inviting us to lean our ear in close and hear what you have to say. We choose to hear by faith and receive more understanding in every area of lives. In you is the light and the life men. I confess that you are the perfect leader. Thank you for your grace and mercy. You can make my way straight in my home, in my body and in my heart. I give this day to you and for your glory.

Winter fare has me chopping a lot of onions. Soups, casseroles, and warm salads all require the edible bulb and afford me the opportunity to shed a few tears that can’t find their way out. I have noble intentions every time I slow down to chop an onion that I will get the perfectly uniform dice, but a little over half way through the onion layers get out of line and my good intentions dissolve along with my mascara. Clearly I’ve never been to culinary school.

I try to make a practice when I go to chopping to ask the Lord what’s on His mind since I’m a captive audience at the cutting board. Isn’t an onion just like life? So many layers, it makes you cry, good intentions fall short, yet it all gets thrown into the mix and makes something worthwhile, even delicious.

If the past three months have revealed anything it's that only in the midst of hardship that pruning and growth are exponential. Crushing produces new wine. Fire reveals gold. Agitation creates pearls. Storms cause the eagle to rise. Clay on a potter's wheel takes shape after the spin. It has been a cleansing yet sacred time.

As our family comes out of a rare season of prolonged illness it’s as if the clouds have parted and the sun is streaming through. We thank God everyday for reprieve and more rest. Wells went from crawling to running after his siblings. The boys are discovering new playmates in each other. Haven’s homeschool has morphed into piles of books for her to devour with some math on the side, and I’m seeking to manage this ship to the best of my ability. We even had a picnic in our jammies on the deck in early February! (Do we live in Minnesota or Missouri?!)

Here’s what else is on my mind this month…

Home

February is normally cold. We’re inside more and therefore using (and cleaning) our space more often. As the winter decor slowly moves out and my plants take center stage again I’m on the lookout to make spaces more functional and beautiful.

I had an “ah ha” moment recently when it comes to organization: NOT EVERY CONTAINER I OWN NEEDS TO BE FULL. In fact, the container is the boundary. If all the crayons don’t fit into the crayon bin, it’s time to throw or donate. The tumblers don’t fit on the shelf? It’s time to ditch a few. Can’t squeeze all my clothes on the rack? Time to simplify my wardrobe.

I’ve operated in a zone cleaning method for the past year that overall serves me well. Aside from the weeks it all piles up for Saturday… Each day while cleaning my designated area I look for places not just to tidy but to declutter. Is there anything I can throw away (art projects from three months ago, scrap papers, random plastic toys that have found their way in)? Is there anything I can add to the donation pile (kid’s clothes, dishes or kitchenware, toys or old books)?

Despite my best efforts some days caring for a home feels utterly overwhelming. Having a zone cleaning plan and even a small container or shelf I made visual progress to feels like a good accomplishment.

Health

Juicing has been a total game changer this winter. Just like I do coffee, I look forward to fresh juice when I go to bed each night! I wonder if that’s one of the reasons Cam and I have avoided all the crud this winter?

Cam and I perfected our favorite nutrient-dense morning juice recipe:

• 4-5 Carrots

• 4-6 Celery

• 1 Green apple

• ½ Beet

• 1 knob Ginger

• 1 Lime

Serves 2

For date night I’ll make our favorite green juice version with kale, lemons, green apple, ginger, celery and cucumber.

Juicing has led me to finally take the leap to forgo coffee for a couple months. *Gasp* I am still in the withdrawal stage which has revealed what a crutch my morning coffee has been the past three years of baby stages. It's time to nourish the adrenals! Simply addressing adrenal health for me looks like no caffeine, very little sugar aside from a bit of honey, no commercial dairy, lots of veggies and legumes, whole grains and some high quality meat like the juicy grass-fed steaks we had tonight.

That being said, a coffee alternative I’ve been enjoying is this Dandelion Latte:

• 1 Tablespoon Dandy Blend (thank me later)

• 1 teaspoon colostrum (optional but adds extra creaminess and nutrient boost)

• 1 teaspoon cocoa

• 1 heaping teaspoon coconut oil

• ¼ cup boiling coconut milk or milk of choice

• 1 cup boiling water

• Dash of sea salt

Serves 1

Mix together in a high powered blender or with a hand frother and enjoy!

Heart

Excellence is the fruit of the Kingdom. Perfection is the demand of a religious spirit. Pastor Bill Johnson made a similar point and it’s been ringing in my ears. I’ve been thinking about Mary and Martha. I always identified more with Martha, the type-A busy bee with a chip on her shoulder. As I reread this story however, I wonder if it’s meant to highlight a missed opportunity rather than a character assessment? In that society and time period it’s assumed that both Mary and Martha were hard workers and both clearly had affection for Christ, yet at this moment Mary caught hold of something greater than the task at hand. She sensed and seized a moment with her Lord. Perhaps in this instance, Martha just got caught up in the distraction?

What does excellence versus perfection look like in my home? In my eating habits? In my parenting? Sometimes I need to leave the messy kitchen to go sit with my son. Sometimes I need to invite my friend over to my tidy home besides the dirty floors I didn’t get to that week. I feel far from this ideal, yet I’m slowly beginning to discern between the two. The fruit of one is peace and confidence, the fruit of the other is anxiety and edginess. My motives also reveal whether I am operating in excellence or perfection. Is this task for the good of another or for my own reputation or preference?

“But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42

The bottom line is I continually desire Heaven’s perspective. Just today I was in the midst of the morning three-ring circus cleaning out the cupboard above the refrigerator. I needed to stand on an island stool to reach. I turned around to answer a child and caught a glimpse of the mess awaiting me. For some reason the mess and disorder didn’t look so bad from up there. A reminder that sometimes I just need to look at things from a little different perspective. If you ever visit and see me standing on stools, you’ll know why.

Just for fun

Winter is our season to snuggle up to more tv time than usual. Here’s a few we’ve enjoyed that bode well for the month of love.

All Creatures Great and Small: If I had to choose one tv series to watch this would be it. There’s a bit of language that’s fitting for the time period and setting, otherwise this is the most wholesome family show there is. James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in the 1930’s Yorkshire Dales get a glorious new adaptation based on his internationally celebrated books.

Someone Like You: A good Valentines Day flick, thanks to Karen Kingsbury. This one will make you think and also cry. After the tragic loss of his best friend, a grieving young architect launches a search for her secret twin sister.

Surprised by Oxford: I’ll let you in on a secret, if it’s based in Europe, has beautiful landscapes and is wholesome I’m probably going to like it. Bonus if there is a music element. A brilliant but emotionally guarded American student, arrives in Oxford focused solely on attaining her PhD. But through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, Caro begins to open herself up to vulnerability & love.

My Prayer

Lord thank you for a season of cleansing, for a time to slow down and detox heart, home and body. Your mercy truly is new every morning and even better than the best cup of coffee! Holy Spirit, continue to remind me of moments that require pause in your presence and freedom for times of diligent work. Fill me with wisdom from above that is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. By your grace teach me to host and honor your presence throughout my days. Bring me near those who need a touch from you as you desire to flow through me. In this season of reflection and stillness solidify your truth deeply within my heart. You are my savior and my Lord, have your way in me!

It’s always strange throwing out last year’s planner. 2024 is in the garbage so to say. If that’s not a great word picture of how fast a year goes and how fleeting time is I don’t know what is. I like paging through my planner before I toss it to remember days gone by and wonder what the new year will bring.

Christmas is packed away, new toys and gadgets have found their new homes, drawers are edited to make room for new outfits, last semester’s school bins have been cleaned out and refreshed. Oh, and if you’re wondering, our kids are healed and are coming out the other side with stronger immune systems and lots of praise!! 

Home

We completed our basement living area and converted a dusty old mechanical room into a workout space in the last several weeks. Thankful for the extra space in time for a long stretch of Winter. We spend a lot of time at home, which means I spend a lot of time staring at rooms and random pieces while doing mental jigsaw puzzles of how I could arrange, place decor, all while taking into consideration the space’s function.

I think it's creativity coming out of my cracks since it seems “home” is my primary creative outlet these days. Our home is a 1900 farmhouse that has been added to over time. We’ve created more of an open floor plan which left very little wall space for decorating. Instead of large wall spaces to beautify I like to create cozy corners that serve as places for play and connection. My unofficial formula for a good old fashion “cozy corner” consists of any combination of baskets, rugs and lamps. 

I can resist shoes and bags, but baskets…baskets get me every time. It’s nearly impossible for me to pass by a well structured basket on clearance or hiding out at a thrift store. Toys, diaper stations, library books, laundry, random catch-alls, magazines, all of these things and more. Baskets are simply a pretty and practical storage solution.

Rugs. Our entire house (besides the basement) are refinished 120 year old hardwood floors after tearing out a houseful of carpet. Rugs define a space and add warmth, especially in the winter. I like to throw extra rugs down to make a space that beckons one to linger a little longer.

Lamps. They say to “layer your lighting”. A single lamp on top of a card table can transform it into a cozy space. If there’s a space that’s falling a little flat, find a lamp, or a string of lights and plug that baby in!

We’ve slowly chipped away at renovations the past two years, which means most of the time our house has been in flux. That can feel frustrating, but I’ve learned to use what I have and not to wait until it’s “all done” to make a cozy corner or a nail hole or two with some thrift store art score. It’s our space! I want to enjoy it, even in the process. And let’s be real, are house projects ever really done??

Homeschool

We have our third grade year mapped out for Haven, which boils down to a few simple assignments each day of reading, writing and math. Mornings seem to be the ideal time to complete these things, however, now we have two other “students” (one and three years old) in the morning mix. My personality would much prefer to drill sergeant our way through each morning and get it done, but that’s led to kid’s tears and my unmet expectations. I’m giving myself permission to switch it up this semester by having our primary goal for the mornings be getting outside together, including Winter.

We have a pond in the backyard that’s become a great new space to explore and plenty of woods to tromp through. Instead of getting frustrated that our math lesson is getting interrupted by getting walloped with inanimate objects and silly name calling we will all have the shared goal of breathing in the fresh air and burning off energy. Reading at bedtime and experimenting with fitting in other academics elsewhere.

Along with being outside, our primary focus is shifting to life skills that Asher (our 3 year old) can participate in at some level. Learning how to use the grain mill, a sourdough refresher, cleaning the bathroom, planning out and planting the garden this Spring as examples on this list.

I’m continually being refined and challenged as a homeschool mom of these three “whole persons”. I’m learning it’s ok to flex, to slow down, to consider the family unit as a whole and do what brings peace and connection. I’m thankful for voices of mentors in this area like Carole Joy Seid and Jennifer Pepito. I recommend each of their podcasts if you too are feeling weary.

Food

Holiday feasting has subsided, making way for times of fasting and cleansing. This month Cam and I are doing a Daniel Fast, something we’ve practiced for a number of years together. It’s always a beautiful time of shaking off the slumber, saying no to sugar, and savoring Scripture. I have a Pinterest Board I refer to during these seasons and I enjoy switching up meal plans with simple and satisfying plant-based foods.

Asher and I juice together early in the morning and “cheers” to good health with our delectable carrot, celery and apple concoction. We even found a recipe to make carrot muffins with the leftover juice pulp. So this month we’re enjoying all things plants, whole grains, pungent seasonings, healthy oils, nuts and seeds.

Heart

The Father is parenting me right alongside me parenting my children. I feel shame when I miss the mark with my kids which feels like so often. For some reason I’m “not getting it”, so shame wants to fill the void. Shame hinders my ability to receive God’s love so that I can fully extend it. 

I’ve heard tender whispers that He is not disappointed or threatened by my humanity. Rather, He is committed to my process for the long haul. He sees who I really am, and He calls me by a new name. He is gentle and tender in heart.

It’s my affection and attention He’s after not a perfect performance.

When I allow them, difficult seasons are like a meat tenderizer to my heart. Smack after smack, my heart becomes more desperate for His presence as I come face to face with the utter disparity of self.

The last several months I can relate to Jacob as he journeyed to a new land. He stops for the night and finds a rock for a pillow. Personally, I would have reached for an oversized tunic. As he slept, Jacob had a profound dream and encounter with God. In the very place where the Lord has made a covenant with his forefathers before him…but Jacob didn’t know he was resting on holy ground. 

“Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” Genesis 28:16

He takes his pillow and builds a pillar as a sign that he will follow God and build a house for him. Everything changed when Jacob encountered the presence of God. What was ordinary, became holy. His journey became a calling. His purpose became a destiny.

“and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” Genesis 28:22

I don’t want to be found dozing in any season of life and miss His presence. 

I believe that hidden in each season there is a unique assignment. So I’m offering up each moment, cozy corner, dirty dish, plate of veggies, child-rearing moment as something Holy unto the Lord that will be unto a beautiful “house” for God. A place where He is delighted to dwell.

Like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, blessed to become a blessing. The Father is always doing a new thing, and I want to get swept up into it like never before. Here’s to cozy corners and fresh starts my friend.

A Prayer

Father, you are so gracious. Just like my kids I confess at times I am selfish, unkind and strong-willed. Thank you for being the perfect leader that never blows a gasket but instead leads me to repentance through your unending kindness. God, I receive it. Open my eyes like Ephesians 1:17-18, that I will not miss the average activities you want to anoint. Open my eyes to your mighty presence, forgive me for being unaware. Like you showed us in Jacaob’s dream, thank you for delighting to dwell with us. May it be on earth, in my places and spaces, as it is in Heaven. It is the greatest privilege of my life to host your presence. You can have me, my desires, my dreams, my plans, my year. I love you.

Anticipating bringing life into the world during Advent has been a unique treasure. Both home births were very different, yet I remember briefly thinking about Mary in the midst of my own labor wondering, “how in the world did the women of old do this in far less comfortable conditions?!” Labor with Asher was  an all night battle with a houseful of cherished support team by my side. My oldest daughter, Haven even experienced his birth. Wells was equally long, yet peaceful, quiet and bearable with only my husband and one midwife at the actual birth. It was a warm, cloudy winter day, with no snow on the ground. I’ll never forget lifting Wells to my chest for the first time and simultaneously (and only time that day) the sun came out streaming through the window on my face. It was as if Heaven were proclaiming another son of God had been born.

Christmas will be forever marked by these two births and experiencing the ecstatic JOY of new life. I’ll never forget silently weeping shortly after Asher was born, staring at him peacefully sleeping beside me, contemplating the cruel destiny and resulting glory Mary had to carry in her heart her son would endure. A baby boy who probably didn’t look too different than mine.

A newly born baby is pure innocence, completely dependent, fully trusting the mother’s inherent instinct to nurture. Then like Mary, we slowly release our children, letting them grow into their unique Kingdom destinies. Would my heart be found like Mary’s saying,  “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)?

Several years ago in January, my husband, Cam and I embarked on a thirty day Bible reading plan. You read right. Read the Bible, front to back in thirty days! An ambitious quest and to be fair I listened to a good portion of it, but we completed it in thirty days nonetheless. (Check out the reading plan on YouVersion Bible App under “30 Day Shred”.)

What was my takeaway? First, we can do almost anything if we put our minds to it. Second and most importantly, consuming the entire span of the divine story in a short time revealed like nothing else the genuine ache in my heart and subsequent relief when Jesus showed up on the scene! And just how does Jesus incarnate enter the drama? As a newborn.

Reading the Bible front to back that quickly is laborious. Mostly because the Old Testament is so long and so full of trauma, despair, and failed attempts to connect with the Creator that each heart so longs to be one with.

Have you read through the entire Old Testament?! Honestly, much of it is horrific to consider. Brutal rulers, ruthless ravaging of human life, preversion, God’s chosen people falling in and out of love with their Redeemer,  and utter chaos headline much of its accounts. Of course, since the Cross, there is a continued battle with good and evil, but now the power of the Cross and an indwelling Holy Spirit fill us with a living hope and restoration of all that was lost in the Garden. Before the sacred manger, it was an endless cycle of striving and a chronic restlessness as the people of God wondered when the Messiah would come.

From the manger to the cross. He came to die. Yet death didn’t have the final word. He overcame death and made a way for us to be one with Him!

As Advent nears its climax and creation relents to clean lines and desolate landscapes my hearts is being sifted so that only what matters remains. Our family is still on the mend, still nurturing little ones throughout the night. I’ve come face to face with my humanity as anger and victimhood want to hijack my peace. Our Christmas tree and the presents which anchor it are sparse. Holiday activities have ceased in light of healing. Days dance with the familiar rhythm of household chores and kid’s needs. Yet, as my discerning husband has so eloquently reminded me numerous times, “there is a treasure in this Christmas.” Like always, I think he’s right.

As I stare at the Christmas lights and candles glimmering in our home throughout the day, and as I take daily hikes in a winter wonderland and tune into His voice I’m slowly…slowly allowing my soul to find rest in Him. 

“But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.” Psalm 131:2

My prayer is that whether or not you have children of your own, whether or not you have given birth at Christmastime, your heart would actually feel the desperate ache you were created with. That you would have the courage to press through any numbness to feel again. To feel whatever it is that comes, and to experience them in His presence. May this ache be uniquely transformed into a deep and engulfing joy as you embrace the story of the stable and the King that chose it as his grand debut.

“Light dawns in the darkness for the upright…” Psalm 112:4a

A Christmas Prayer,

Father, give us courage this day to peel back the layers of subconscious futility brought on by our desires to satisfy our souls with lesser lovers. In this moment we confess that it’s you we long for and only you that brings satisfaction. Renew the wonder and joy of the reality of the birth of your Son to a simple woman yielded to your plan. Smash the lethargy we may feel and renew a right spirit within us to receive more fully the Gift that Jesus is. Show us how you desire to draw near to us today. Thank you Father for sending us your Son and for shining your all encompassing light on our darkness. You are the light and our life.

Merry Christmas Friends!

The other day I escaped (the baby was sleeping and I did my best to set the other two up with an activity that would yield at least 15 minutes of peace) for a brisk walk outside my doorstep.

For some reason, each year the clean slate of winter, grey tones and vast, barren landscapes become more and more beautiful to me. We live in the prairiescape of Southern Minnesota which means wind! Many winter days I walk laps on our ten acres, sheltered from wind by a large grove of trees. On this particular walk I was looking at these leafless trees withstanding a ruthless onslaught of another windy day and wondered how in the world they stand year after year amidst so much pressure?

I was reminded of the guy who we bought our two apple trees from this past Spring. “Don’t tie them to a stake. They need exposure to wind to grow strong roots.” This tidbit came up in my Spirit as I pondered. Roots. Why roots? When I so badly want a crutch?

In my kitchen sits a tray of remedies because we’ve been overcoming illness consistently for about two months. With two littles that equates to many long days and nights. This season, albeit short in the grand scheme, has challenged me to my core. It’s offered little time by myself, to read, write or recharge. I’ve wanted a crutch so bad. In eight weeks no crutch has worked. Social media? No longer an option. An extra sweet or salty snack? Just leaves me feeling regretfull. Airing my woes to everyone on my contact list? Venting only takes one so far… A quick workout? Other than a much needed mental break, those breaks don’t do much for restoring my soul. Online shopping? I hate accumulating clutter.

I’ve been thinking about the profound nature of a root. Hidden, strong, reaches down, looks messy but can withstand almost anything. Seems to me I’m in a perfect scenario to grow some.

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7

It’s literally Him, His word that satisfies. One verse here, one chapter there. I’ve done this so imperfectly but by God’s grace I will pass my test and dig deeper.

The best news of all in this particular season has been a revelation that Jesus Himself is quite literally, the root. 

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” Revelation 22:16

Isn’t that just like Him? No matter what the remainder of this unexpected December brings, I will follow my Jesus and become like a root, but ultimately trust in the strength of His.

Food

On a happier note, this month I have been relishing a nightly cap of raw milk hot chocolate accompanied by my homemade freshly milled chocolate chip cookie(s). More on my recent love of whole grains in an upcoming post. I find the sip to bite ratio to be about one and three-quarters cookies to one steaming mug of hot chocolate. I believe my hot chocolate is supremely delicious because of the added dash of sea salt, cinnamon and perhaps nutmeg with a scoop of collagen or colostrum frothed in. Most nights I sit by the wood stove staring at the Christmas tree with a beautiful recipe book or home design book spread on my lap as I wait for the first call of duty of the night…

Our mainstay this winter is simply bread. Sourdough with fresh milled flour. Our egg farmers are low on eggs, a natural occurrence in the winters. So in replacement of my normal two eggs, and carrot salad I am enjoying leaning into “seasonal eating” by replacing them with a thick slice of toast with almond butter and honey, with a good cup of jo of course. So satisfying and hearty. For other meals our bread is accompanied by a good brothy soup or chopped salad. Bread is life.

Home

I’ve fully embraced the magic of candles. We have them everywhere throughout the house and light them at each meal that we sit down together, even if it’s battery operated. Something about a flickering light gives pause, at least for a moment, to soak up the present. I pray someday my children savor these moments of delight as they grow in the ability to relish in times enjoying one another.

Our morning breakfast Bible time has been replaced by our favorite Advent Storybook which has been in the running for favorite Advent book the past three years. At night our oldest daughter, Cam and I are riveted by Arnold Ytreeide’s Family Advent Story Series, starting with Jotham’s Journey. I scored a History of Carols book complete with a CD last year at our local thrift store that serves as our history and music for the month. My favorite thus far is the story behind Silent Night. 

The soundtrack of my December has been Novo Amor. Not Christmassy but seems to capture my mood and calm my nerves. Don’t hold me to the lyrics. At home we listen to Midwinter Carols, Volume 2 by Joel Clarkson. Less noise, less Mariah Carrey, more beauty in the background.

Heart

As a homeschool family and the fact that our local library is one of two spots to go during colder months where we live, you could say we are regulars. Recently I wandered off to the cooking and home sections since I’ve embraced them as hobbies in this season. I have been pleasantly delighted how flipping through beautiful pages of food and home have given life to my soul. Plus at the end of the day I get to return them and they don’t become a pile to manage. I highly recommend taking advantage of your local library. 

One of my favorite authors I literally stumbled upon this Fall is Sally Clarkson. A “giant” of the faith and discipleship I’ve come to find out. Her books similarly contain such beauty, purpose and grace. Consider beginning with Teatime Discipleship. Her words have been water to a dry soul and have articulated what I feel like is a divine calling and assignment, which is centered around bringing others into the fold around my table. I cannot recommend her beautiful books enough whether a newly-wed or seasoned grandma. These are worth having.

Our days this month are simple, yet laced with intention. Quality over quantity. A continual mantra when my perfectionistic tendencies want to take the lead. One day at a time this December. Fantasizing about full nights of sleep… one day. Practicing a heart of thankfulness. I don’t think three days go by without thanking the Lord for a hot shower. I mean, what a luxury. Cherishing memories of last December preparing to and bringing our third child into the world in the dreamiest of ways, and our second born's third birthday in a few weeks. 

While everything outside is seemingly barren and dead I’m just over here in my little world growing roots. Psalm 73 pretty much sums it up for me this month,

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever Psalm 73:26

A Prayer

No matter the landscape of your December this year, may your roots grow deep in Him. May you be wonderfully refreshed by the Spirit as He washes over you with the washing of the Word, “your flesh and your heart may fail, but God is the strength of your heart and your portion forever.” “He is your help, and in the shadow of His wings you can sing for joy.” (Psalm 68) He is the best portion. He is the light in the darkness. He is why we sing.
