But perhaps it extends far beyond that.

Choosing a career even though you know you’re capable of more. Staying with a partner who reinforces the version of yourself you believe you deserve. Dismissing “small” mistakes while relentlessly blaming yourself for every inconvenience. Repeatedly feeding yourself things—physically or emotionally—that you know aren’t good for you.

I’m not saying that every bad decision is an act of self-harm. Rather, it’s the quiet, repeated abandonment of our own potential. It’s the subtle procrastination of becoming who we could be. It’s allowing others to hurt us because the pain feels familiar. It’s slipping back into patterns we already know will wound us.

I often wonder if these seemingly insignificant choices stem from a loss of control. Ironically, we begin to lose control the moment we silence our own instincts. Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is simply listen—to that persistent feeling in our gut, to what our nervous system is trying to communicate. Anxiety isn’t always telling the truth, but sometimes it’s pointing toward a truth we’ve been avoiding. Maybe the answer isn’t to keep fighting ourselves, but to become curious enough to listen.

Maybe the cruelest form of self-harm is not believing in yourself. Not trusting your own judgment. And perhaps it begins the moment you decide you’re unworthy of the life you’re capable of living.

oh how i wish to live

Lately, I’ve been waking up with a familiar ache in my chest.

Brown

Lately, I’ve been waking up with a familiar ache in my chest. I used to think it was something new — something sudden that showed up out of nowhere — but now I realize it’s been with me for years, always lingering quietly in the background. I just never had the courage to listen to it before. It comes and goes, but when it returns, it feels as if it’s always been there — like an old part of me I kept trying to run from. And oddly enough, when I feel it press against my chest again, I know it’s time to slow down. I don’t even have to think about it — I just start doing the things I should’ve done all along. I sleep when I’m tired, I wake up early, I sit with myself in silence, I breathe more consciously, and I begin to feel more in tune with my body than usual. It’s strange how this ache, which once felt unbearable, now feels like a soft nudge to take care of myself. I don’t know whether it’s my enemy or a misunderstood friend — maybe both. What I do know is that it always shows up when something in my life needs changing. The last time it visited me this deeply, I was still married to a man who had reduced me to a shadow of myself. I cared about him more than I did about my own well-being, and he saw that as an opportunity — to control me, silence me, dehumanize me. I was young and passionate, and I mistook his intensity for love. I confused his pain for intimacy, his harsh words for honesty. I believed I must’ve done something wrong to trigger him — and I accepted that version of the story. I stayed. I stayed even when I couldn’t breathe, even when my body began telling me in every way it could that I wasn’t safe. That same ache started to grow louder again — but I ignored it, thinking maybe this is just what love feels like. I called it butterflies, anxiety, the pressure of commitment. But deep down, I knew. It wasn’t love. It was grief. Grief for the parts of me I had buried so he could feel tall. The ache soon became unbearable — I couldn’t breathe, and yet the only person I turned to for comfort was the man who had taken my breath away in the first place. He called me weak. A weeping girl. And I hated how much I still wanted him to tell me who I was. I didn’t care if the neighbor’s dog liked me more, sensed something in me that was good — none of it mattered unless he saw it. I had collapsed into his emotions completely. If he was angry, I wept. If he was happy, I felt weightless. I lived inside his weather. So when the ache kept coming back, I started to resent it. I kept asking, why now, when I’m supposed to be happy? Why do I crave space more than I crave his presence, when all I thought I ever wanted was to belong to him? But eventually, I stopped asking and started listening. And that’s when I realized I wasn’t surviving anymore. I was disappearing. The ache wasn’t destroying me — it was trying to save me. So I left. And yes, it was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. Not because I feared being alone — but because I feared him. His reaction. His rage. I had gone so numb that by then, even the idea of physical violence didn’t scare me. I remember asking him for space so gently, like it was just a passing thought. But what followed was something I still struggle to put into words — a psychological storm I’ve never fully spoken about, not even a year later. Sometimes, late at night, I wonder if it broke something in me. If now I carry the scent of that pain into every room, every conversation, every relationship. What if I never fully heal? What if I’ve absorbed parts of him, the darkness, the coldness? What if I see his patterns in people who don’t deserve it? These thoughts haunt me. But I’ve decided that I would rather feel deeply, even if it hurts, than ever go numb again. I would rather carry this loyal ache — this sacred discomfort in my chest — than chase the illusion of a pleasure that threatens my soul. So now, when the ache returns, I don’t panic. I sit with it. I let it speak. I hold it gently. Because I know, finally and completely, that it is not my enemy. It is the part of me that has always known the truth. It is the part of me that loved me even when I didn’t. It is the part that chose to stay — to protect me, quietly, all along…

Writing today because it’s raining

I miss you so much and it’s making me sick.

Brown

I miss you so much and it’s making me sick.

Ash Bodies

I met you on Earth,

Brown

I met you on Earth,

but our stars collided somewhere higher—

in a sky that hadn’t opened for centuries.

The light was so violent,

it burned the sea.

It turned still water into wildfire.

We spoke in a language no one speaks anymore—

not with their mouths,

but with the ache in their bones.

I let you search my soul,

and I didn’t flinch.

I let you see all of it—

every wound still open,

every scar still warm.

You looked at me like it mattered.

And for a moment,

I believed I was worth that kind of looking.

We didn’t touch—

we inhaled the dust of our spirits.

Every word became poetry.

Every silence, a vow.

Our souls matched beat for beat

until I couldn’t tell

where I ended,

and where you began.

I didn’t fall in love, I remembered it.

Like I’d loved you a thousand times before

and would love you a thousand more.

They say when love reaches that kind of depth,

it starts to ask for blood.

And it did.

But we had none left.

We were both so tired—

cold in places the sun never reaches.

And love…

it didn’t hold us.

It devoured us.

Still—

it wouldn’t leave.

It haunts my body.

And I know it haunts yours too.

I only ever wanted to hold you.

Never to break you.

I wanted to be soft,

but I was jagged.

And you—

you bled so quietly,

I didn’t even hear it.

You want to wipe these tears,

but I can’t find your hands.

I can’t see you anymore.

Even though you’re still watching.

You’re ash now.

Burned by a love that asked too much.

And I’m here,

blind,

searching for the fire

that used to mean “home.”

where is my soul?

Each night, he calls my soul without a word.

Brown

Each night, he calls my soul without a word.

And though I beg it to stay, it slips through my ribs like light through lace.

Sleep is no sanctuary.
