We have asked that question before.

When aviation transformed transportation, we created regulatory bodies to establish safety standards. When pharmaceuticals transformed medicine, we created systems to test effectiveness and protect the public. When nuclear technology emerged, governments recognized that extraordinary power required extraordinary oversight.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly approaching that same threshold. Today, AI systems are being integrated into healthcare, financial services, education, transportation, communications, scientific research, and military planning. Their influence continues to expand at a pace that would have been unimaginable only a few years ago.

Yet our governance structures remain fragmented and reactive.

Many technology leaders argue that regulation will slow innovation. History suggests otherwise. Well-designed regulation often strengthens innovation by creating public confidence. People are more willing to adopt new technologies when they believe appropriate safeguards are in place. The question is not whether artificial intelligence should continue advancing. It should.

The question is whether society can develop intelligent oversight before a major failure forces us to do so under crisis conditions. Good governance is not the enemy of innovation. It is one of the foundations of sustainable innovation.

What concerns me most is not that AI is becoming more capable. What concerns me is that our institutions are not becoming more capable at the same rate.

Technology is moving at exponential speed. Governance is moving at human speed.

That gap may become one of the defining challenges of the coming decade.

If artificial intelligence is truly as transformative as its advocates believe, then perhaps it deserves the same level of thoughtful oversight that society has applied to every other technology with the power to reshape civilization.
