There’s a moment many of us know too well: standing in front of a bursting wardrobe, thinking, “ugh, I have nothing to wear.” Not because there aren’t clothes, but because so much of what is hanging there belongs to a past version of us. The outfit we bought for that one event, the tailored blazer from a fantasy job we never had, the “must have” bag that never really became us. Our closets quietly fill up with stories, impulses and almosts, while the pieces we actually love go on heavy rotation and everything else just sits.

I say this with full, painful honesty: I am part of that problem too.

As a lifelong clotheshorse, I have shamefully accumulated a ridiculous amount of clothes. If I were to actually catalogue everything, we would not be talking in the hundreds. It would be in the thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of garments.

I have multiple storage units.

Multiple!.

It is mortifying.

At one point my husband looked at me and very reasonably asked, “Why are you paying monthly storage fees for things you never see, let alone wear?” I did not have a good answer.

LOUVELLE is not trying to be a giant free for all marketplace. It is curated from the start: members are screened, and the inventory leans heavily into designer labels, think Chanel, Alaia, Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, and similar brands.

• Support platforms that align with the future, not the past. Every time you choose rental or secondhand over fast fashion, you are quietly voting for a different system.
