I realize they’re looking for a recipe or a checklist.

You want investing to be like IKEA furniture. Just give me the instructions, tell me which screw goes where, and promise I won’t have any parts left over.

Unfortunately, the market doesn’t come with assembly instructions, and that’s one of the hardest parts for people to accept.

This is why copying someone else’s portfolio almost never works. You don’t know what problem they’re trying to solve.

Are they generating income? Building wealth? Reducing taxes? Raising cash? Hedging another position?

Without that context, a stock symbol tells you almost nothing.

That’s why I always say investing and trading aren’t about memorizing a recipe.

It’s about learning how to make decisions when there isn’t one.

The goal isn’t to learn my watchlist and ask, "What should I buy?" The better question is, "Teach me how you think."

Performance Overview

Monthly Options Premium Collected: $10,424
Positions traded: 13
These were my positions and strike prices:

No panic selling. No obsessing over a bad trade or a bad month.

Some decisions will be mistimed or simply wrong, and that’s part of the game.

But there are usually dozens of opportunities to manage your way through a situation, improve your position, or even turn it into a win.

If you get hung up on being wrong, you’ll start fearing the next decision.
And fear gets expensive fast.

Ask any other experienced trader and they’ll tell you the same thing: we can sit down with the exact same account size, the exact same stocks, and the exact same market conditions, and we’d probably do completely different things over the next thirty days.

Different entries.
Different exits.
Different position sizes.
Different levels of risk.

And neither of us would necessarily be wrong. We’re simply playing a different game.

That’s what makes investing so frustrating for some people and so freeing for others.

There isn’t one right answer.
There isn’t one perfect stock.
There isn’t one perfect strategy.

A great company can be a terrible trade.
A mediocre company can be a fantastic long-term investment.
A stock can be too expensive today and attractive six months from now.

Everything depends on context.

The company.
The valuation.
The momentum.
The market.
The opportunity cost.
Your own goals.

Investors get into trouble because they want someone else to do all the thinking for them.

They want to know which stock is better.

Which indicator is right.

Whether they should trade or invest.

But the better question to ask yourself is: Can I live with being wrong... or am I letting the fear of it keep me stuck?

Performance Overview

Monthly Options Premium Collected: $17,959
Positions traded: 10
These were my positions and strike prices:

For experienced investors, it feels familiar.

We’ve seen this before, and the challenge is that nobody knows where the top is.

That’s exactly what makes discipline so difficult.

Because trimming a winner almost guarantees you’ll spend some time watching other people continue to make money.

You have to be willing to accept that.

I was. And while I probably didn’t time things perfectly, I sleep perfectly fine.

I've been around the market long enough to know that the people who claim they consistently buy bottoms and sell tops are usually much better storytellers than investors.

Performance Overview

Monthly Options Premium Collected: $23,889
Positions traded: 14
These were my positions and strike prices:

But Wall Street loves to throw around terms like “capital expenditures,” which is a fancy way of saying these companies are spending absolutely massive amounts of money right now.

The tension is simple: Investors are patient… until they aren’t.

At some point, all of this spending has to translate into meaningful profits and real returns.

For now, earnings season kicked off with many of these companies blowing away expectations and raising forward guidance again, sending stock prices even higher.

This is usually the point in the cycle where people stop asking questions and start chasing momentum, but that’s where excitement can quietly turn into overexposure.

So let’s talk about discipline, What had been a straight climb into excessive valuations and unbelievable returns finally seemed to pause. With that came volatility, uncertainty, and opportunity for those willing to stomach the discomfort.

Despite being more selective and cautious throughout the month, I had a surprisingly strong month of premiums. I wasn’t chasing trades. I was intentional about where and how I put my capital to work, especially in a market that felt like it was moving quickly in both directions in any given day.

That said, I was assigned approximately $167K in stock, which reduced my available buying power. This is always part of the plan and something I preach loudly. Influencers who want you to think they trade options with a $50,000 account and consistently earn $10,000 a month are trying to sell you an unbelievable storyline. I only write options on positions I’m willing to own and I build wealth by staying in the long game, not by playing roulette, but it’s a reminder of how quickly exposure can increase in volatile conditions.

Performance Overview

Monthly Options Premium Collected: $8,532
Positions traded: 8
These were my positions and strike prices:

My muscles were shaking and everything in me wanted to stop at four.

And yet, tomorrow I’ll walk back in and do it again, maybe with more weight.

That moment of strain doesn’t scare me anymore. It’s familiar.

And it struck me how unusual that is.

For someone working out beside me, one session at my intensity might feel overwhelming. Not because they aren’t capable, but because it lives outside their comfort zone.

Ironically, that’s exactly how I feel about running. A few miles seems to drag on forever to me. Each time I do it, I swear never to repeat the experience.

Yet there are people who run every day.

They aren’t superhuman.

They’ve simply wired their brains to tolerate discomfort.

Discomfort Isn’t the Enemy

Some of us learn to live just beyond our comfort zone.

We lift heavier. We take risks. We try things we aren’t sure we can do.

Over time, discomfort stops feeling like danger and starts feeling like progress.

This matters far beyond the gym and applies to your financial life as well:

Starting a business.

Making financial decisions on your own.

Changing the trajectory of your life.

Doing something differently than you ever have before.

These things can feel overwhelming. Not because they’re impossible, but because they’re unfamiliar.

When it comes to money, making financial decisions on your own can feel intimidating at first - deciding to manage an account on your own, take on debt, or invest in something that will actually build your future.

Confidence isn’t going to come before action. Do it scared. Do it unsure. You’re going to screw up a few times and learn as you go.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" a ledge.

You don’t know exactly how far the drop is or where the other side is, so you hesitate.

But something interesting happens when you take that first leap and realize you’re still standing.

You didn’t break.
You didn’t disappear.
You didn’t lose everything.

The second leap still feels uncomfortable.

But you hesitate a little less.

By the third, you pause for only a second.

By the fourth, you hold your breath and step forward without overthinking.

Why So Many People Stay in the Box

By midlife, most of us have built lives around safety and predictability.

Whether you’ve stayed in the same job, followed the same routines, or made the “safe” financial decisions, you’ve adapted to avoid things that disrupt stability and safety.

And there’s a good reason for that.

We live in a world filled with noise:

miracle transformations

overnight wealth promises

quick fixes for everything

marketing designed to exploit fear

After enough exposure to scams and empty promises, our caution and intuition become a shield, but it’s also a double edged sword.

If you’re always waiting for someone else to make things safe before you move forward, you may never move at all.

What Actually Happens When You Take the Leap

Despite our fears, most people who step outside their comfort zone discover:

They didn’t lose everything.

They learned something.

They adapted.

They grew stronger.

There will be losses along the way. If you’re not making a wrong decision occasionally, you’re probably playing too small.

The people we see succeeding today didn’t win every time. They just kept going. Keep that in mind when their success story seems so smooth or their journey feels so far ahead. It’s not nearly as far away as you think.

Confidence in any area — money, fitness, or life — is only going to happen through repetition, adjustment, and trying again.

Bullish Habits is a reader-supported publication. What once felt overwhelming becomes familiar.

Research also shows:

Women tend to report higher financial anxiety despite equal capability.

Men are more likely to take financial risks earlier, while women often take fewer but more deliberate risks.

Women who do invest and take ownership of financial decisions often achieve equal or better long-term outcomes.

This has nothing to do with ability. It’s about exposure and conditioning.

If you tell yourself you’re not good at something, or wait to feel confident before beginning, you will be stuck there forever. You are only going to get better at this through experience.

How to Wire Your Brain for Discomfort

You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight.

Growth happens through repeated exposure to manageable discomfort.

1. Do one thing daily that feels slightly uncomfortable

Not overwhelming. Just unfamiliar.

2. Stay long enough to prove you can handle it

Your nervous system will learn safety through repetition.

3. Separate discomfort from danger

Growth feels uncomfortable but that doesn’t mean it’s unsafe.

4. Expect imperfection

Progress rarely feels graceful. (Bonus points if your early attempts are caught on video and make you cringe later. They become badges of honor.)

5. Stop outsourcing your courage

Courses and coaches are great, but no one can do the push-ups for you.

6. Let small wins recalibrate your confidence

Each experience rewires what you believe you’re capable of.

What Changes Over Time

Discomfort becomes familiar.
Fear becomes information instead of a stop sign.
Confidence grows because you’ve proven to yourself that you can adapt.

The people who keep growing aren’t fearless.
They’ve learned to live just beyond the edge of comfortable.

That can feel especially hard to do when it comes to money and financial decisions, but consider the cost of avoiding the unknown: you stay exactly where you are. And the cost of that is likely far greater than a few stumbles along the way.

You don’t need to pick up the 100-pound weight on day one. Just step slightly beyond where you stood yesterday.

Stay there long enough to prove to yourself that you can.

Then do it again. And again.

Over time, things will change.

And so will you.

If you know someone who would enjoy this content, please share a link to subscribe:

Share

And if you have any questions or enjoy dialogue, message me and introduce yourself:

Trading Diary — January 2026

This usually surprises people.

Beth @ Bullish Habits

This usually surprises people. When I tell people I trade, I can almost see the mental alarm bells go off.

Isn’t that risky? Is she gambling?

Most of my clients have been conditioned to see investing and trading as opposites. In reality, most thoughtful investors live somewhere in between. That gap between investing, trading, and gambling isn’t what most people think and understanding that difference is where confidence begins.

So I start this post with a reminder that curiosity is one of the most valuable traits of successful people. Stay skeptical. Don’t shy away from dumb questions. You’re not wrong and your questions are never dumb. And most importantly, stay determined to find out how things work - it’s exactly how you begin to understand anything.

Where I Sit on the Spectrum

We tend to think there are only two choices: buy-and-hold investing or high-risk trading.

In reality, there’s a spectrum.

Long-term investing
Owning quality companies or funds and letting time do the heavy lifting.

Strategic trading
Using shorter-term moves to generate income or manage risk.

Speculation
Trying to predict quick price moves, often driven by hype, headlines, or momentum.

None of these are inherently “good” or “bad.” They simply carry different levels of risk, time commitment, and intention.

Most of what gets attention on social media lives at the far end of that spectrum. Fast moves. Big promises. Dramatic wins and losses.

What rarely gets discussed is the middle ground - the thoughtful, repeatable decisions that build confidence over time.

This diary lives there. It isn’t about picking stocks. It’s about understanding how decisions fit together.

Because without context, trades are just noise.

Performance Overview

Monthly Options Premium Collected: $13,452
Positions traded: 4
These were my positions and strike prices:

I stopped outsourcing understanding

I didn’t need to become an expert in everything. I just needed to stop nodding along.

I allowed myself to ask questions, even the ones that made me feel stupid.

And that wasn’t easy to admit.

For a long time, I accepted the first answer I got. Not because I understood it, but because I didn’t want to be annoying or take up more time than I thought I deserved. So I nodded, thanked them, and walked away still confused.

At some point, I realized that wasn’t humility, it was me shrinking.

Understanding doesn’t come from being polite.
It comes from staying with the question until it actually makes sense.

When I finally let myself ask again (and again and again if I needed to), the fog lifted faster than I expected. Not because the answers were suddenly brilliant, but because I stopped abandoning myself halfway through the conversation.

I grew a few feet in this process and learned that putting yourself first sometimes looks like being willing to feel awkward, to feel slow, to feel exposed. It’s deciding that your clarity matters more than someone else’s comfort.

Confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything.
It comes from knowing enough to make your next decision and trusting yourself to keep going from there.

3. I paid attention to my habits, not just my numbers

I’ve always been good with money. I understand the mechanics, the math, and the strategy.

But being financially competent doesn’t make you immune to patterns.

I had to look honestly at my habits, where I avoided checking in, where I defaulted to “later,” and where I assumed things were fine because the numbers technically worked. That awareness mattered more than any spreadsheet.

Money decisions don’t fall apart because we don’t know better. They unravel when we stop paying attention to how we’re behaving.

Getting clear on my habits wasn’t about blame or being right.
It was about responsibility and giving myself a truer starting point.

4. I dealt with my emotions before I dealt with my money

Before I made financial decisions, I gave myself space to process all of it. The grief, the anger, the resentment and the unfairness of it all. And I set it all aside.

Not because emotions don’t matter, but because money decisions made in anger, fear, or panic don’t age well. I didn’t want to do anything to prove a point, send a message, or make someone else’s life harder.

I didn’t need to “win” the divorce. I had a next chapter to conquer.

And at that point, I was able to think clearly. I would say to myself, “What do I actually want my future to look like?” And once I had that answer, the financial decisions became easier because they were rooted in intention, not emotion.

Letting go of what had been made room to get excited about what was coming.

5. I made quiet moves

Nothing dramatic. No emotional outbursts or announcements.

I stopped letting everything live in my head and, instead of worrying or waiting for certainty, I started taking tiny, deliberate actions that moved the needle.

I scheduled meetings to confirm details, not because I lacked knowledge, but because clarity matters. I reviewed numbers, account structures, and access so there were no assumptions. Even without moving money, I was building certainty.

That step is foundational for someone who’s never been walked through their finances before and not something you want to be learning for the first time in a moment of crisis.

For me, I wasn’t making a leap yet, but I was no longer standing still.

Those small steps rebuilt confidence and eventually made bigger decisions feel possible.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I don’t even know where I’d start,” that’s more common than you think.

Most people don’t need motivation. They need a map and permission to begin quietly.

This is a conversation I’m having more and more, and one I’ll keep returning to here.

Because starting over doesn’t begin after something ends. It begins when you decide to understand.

December 2025 Trading Diary

Happy New It’s like catching the wave everyone else missed.

But once you’re up, the overthinking starts.

You wonder how long you should ride without jumping off early or worry about wiping out because you got greedy.

The Discomfort Test

If volatility alone makes you want to sell, the problem isn’t the stock. It’s your tolerance.

Markets are uncomfortable by design. That’s not a bad thing and weeds out most investors, allowing the rest of us to profit. In fact, price movement doesn’t mean anything is wrong, but we naturally interpret discomfort as danger.

Compounding wealth requires:

Accepting that you will look wrong before you look right

Sitting through drawdowns without constantly editing your strategy

Staying calm when prices move but nothing fundamental has changed

You have to be willing to be wrong temporarily without labeling yourself a bad investor.

That’s emotional control and trusting your process.

The Other Side of the Same Coin

Patience, however, isn’t blind loyalty and holding too long can be just as costly as selling too early.

Being “married” to an idea often causes us to:

Ignore overbought conditions or a run-up in value

Refuse to take profits during hype

Justify that “this time is different”

Rational investing isn’t about always holding. It’s about knowing why you’re holding or why you’re exiting.

The same discipline that keeps you from panic-selling should also be the same muscle you tap into when risk is no longer being compensated.

Think about driving in traffic. Discipline keeps you from slamming on the brakes That same judgement tells you when staying in the lane is actually more dangerous than changing it.

Emotions & Egos Are Costly

Most wealth is built by doing two unglamorous things incredibly well:

Spend less. React less.

Read those again and sit with it.

There’s nothing sexy about either one. They won’t get you a lot of attention or admiration and they definitely won’t scratch the “do something” itch. But these are two of the rarest traits among truly successful people.

And while the habits aren’t glamorous, the outcome most often is.

The most successful people, in any craft, move quietly and deliberately.
They have nothing to prove.
They don’t need constant feedback.
They do less explaining and produce more results.

The same is true in investing. In markets, the people doing the least talking are usually doing the best.

The Interference Rule

And this is the takeaway worth remembering:

Most investors don’t lose money by being wrong, they lose money by interfering with positions that would have worked.

You sell too early, you hold without intention, or you act to relieve discomfort instead of risk.

The hardest skill in investing isn’t intelligence, but restraint.

Because the only thing harder than picking a winning stock…

…is holding onto it long enough, and rationally enough, for it to matter.

Bullish Habits is a reader-supported publication. If you’re a natural dynamic decision-maker, you already have the skill set traders spend years trying to develop. That’s your edge, and I’ll encourage you to lean into it.

Think of it like trying to use a simple spreadsheet to track something that changes every second. If you tried to use static formulas for a constantly shifting input, you’ll break the sheet in minutes.

Most people try to trade the market using “static formulas” that lean on fixed answers, rigid rules, or someone else’s prediction.

But successful traders operate more like an Excel macro:

Assess the conditions in front of them

Make a decision based on that exact moment

Adjust as the data changes

Move forward instead of freezing

Course-correct if necessary

There’s no ego to it and no obsession with being “right.” Instead, you win by simply making a move (any move at all), adapting to what happens next, and then continuously managing your outcomes and improving.

This Is Why Most Investors Struggle

90% of people think trading is about finding the correct answer. (You may even be married to one.)

They want reassurance.
They want consensus.
They want someone who sounds authoritative and makes them feel safe.

But here’s the truth: Two smart people can look at the same chart and make completely different, but equally valid, decisions.

This isn’t about being right “globally.” It’s about what matches your reality, what you want and what you can comfortably handle right now.

And just like in your job or any other area you know well, the more you make these imperfect decisions, the easier it gets and the more confident you become.

Not from memorizing rules, copying someone else’s trades, or trying to outguess the headlines.

Confidence comes from learning how you make decisions in dynamic environments and trusting that process.

Trading Is a Skill of Movement, Not Perfection

You will not get every trade right.
That’s not the point.

Great traders do three things well:

Make a decision based on the data in front of them

Work with the outcome, even if it wasn’t ideal

Adjust without spiraling or freezing

Sometimes the trade goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.
Sometimes the market offers you a better path mid-trade and you pivot.

Your job isn’t to be perfect, but to stay in motion.

When a trade goes sideways, dynamic thinkers don’t panic. They:

Reassess

Problem-solve

Manage risk

Decide whether to stay, exit, or roll

Learn something valuable for next time

Static thinkers freeze and, while they fail to realize it, that moment of indecision is the decision. And it’s usually the one that costs the most.

If You Can Think on Your Feet, Embrace It

The ability to make decisions and adapt is a superpower and you absolutely have what it takes to steer your own portfolio, even if you still have advisor in the passenger seat. Advisors are partners, not puppeteers.

Don’t discount it. Don’t downplay it, and definitely don’t talk yourself out of the market because you think you need someone else’s permission or prediction.

You don’t.

You need a process, a framework, and the willingness to stay agile within a moving system (and spoiler...you have that already. 😉)

Bring This Back to the Market

Trading isn’t about knowing what the market will do.
It’s about knowing what you will do when the market moves.

That’s the game in it’s entirety.

The more you practice making decisions in motion, the better your intuition gets.
The better your intuition gets, the more confident you become.
And the more confident you become, so does your ability to stop letting other people steer your damn car.

This is a kind of empowerment most people never experience.

But you can.

And you will.

Bullish Habits is a reader-supported publication. They Don’t Track Anything (because it feels overwhelming).

Most people avoid looking at their finances for the same reason they avoid stepping on a scale: they’re afraid of what the numbers will say.

So they don’t track. They don’t categorize. They don’t look at subscriptions. They don’t know what’s hitting their account and when.

What it leads to:

Money “leaks” everywhere

No idea what they actually have available to invest

Panic instead of planning

How it shows up in investing:

They don’t invest because it feels like “one more thing” to manage. For them, avoiding the discomfort feels easier than confronting the truth.

2. They Buy Emotionally, Not Intentionally

We live in a world engineered for impulse spending:

One-click checkout

Flash sales

“Pay in 4” everywhere (Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna and Sezzle just to name a few)

Subscriptions for everything

Upsells baked into every app

All of this is dopamine-driven, not future-driven.

And when your money decisions are emotional, your investments become emotional too, leading you to:

Buy things to self-soothe

Confuse wants with needs

Stress when bills hit and there’s nothing to show for it

How it shows up in investing:

They think investing is “risky,” but the real risk is their spending habits. They never get to see the upside of compounding because their money is already gone.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" (stocks, real estate, art, whatever) is much higher than what it would be if you calculated its true value based on profits or earnings.

When people worry about a bubble, they’re saying: “This thing seems inflated — the price could fall or the earnings need to grow… fast. Otherwise, the price will have to adjust.”

One of the biggest key determinants is the Price to Earnings Ratio (P/E Ratio).

Here’s the basic formula:

P/E ratio = Price of the stock ÷ Earnings per share

Price = the market price; what investors are willing to pay today for the hopes of what the company will make tomorrow.

Earnings = what the company makes (profit) after expenses.

If the P/E is very high, it means: “Investors are paying a lot now for each dollar of earnings.”

If earnings don’t grow as expected, the price often drops to bring the ratio back into line.

How Bubbles Happen

A company might have:

A modest current profit (or maybe none at all)

Big hopes (and big spending) on future growth

Investors paying as if those hopes will definitely show up

In the world of AI, for example: companies invest heavily, hype is high, expectations are high. The question is: Will user adoption and practical profit come fast enough? Because if it gets delayed, the “price” part can’t keep up and the bubble may burst.

<picture><img src="/__u/substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3e25!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F92e9bfef-251c-42ee-bb40-66723040a8f5_1080x1609.png" width="496" height="738.9481481481481" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/92e9bfef-251c-42ee-bb40-66723040a8f5_1080x1609.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":1609,"width":1080,"resizeWidth":496,"bytes":null,"alt":"Nvidia's AI Bubble: The GPU Apocalypse · Can Resolve Itself

Earnings + Revenue Grow Fast Enough
→If profits increase and earnings rise, then the P/E ratio can stay high without risk. The price doesn’t need to crash if the “E” catches up to the “P”.
Example: Company A expected big-time profit in 2026; if by 2025 they hit huge adoption and revenue, the high price might be justified.

Price Comes Down (or Growth Slows)
→ If the earnings don’t materialize, or growth is slower than expected, the high price becomes harder to justify → P/E drops → price falls.
Example: Company B with lots of hype, but no real profits yet — if that stays the case, the stock price may drop rather than waiting for the “E” to catch up.

Why It Matters for You

You’re probably not a day-trader. You’re someone who wants control, clarity, empowerment.

When the news says “AI bubble” or “valuation risk”, you want to know what they mean. Understanding this gives you the power to ask better questions — with your advisor, with other investors, your own investments.

It helps you resist hype. Instead of being pulled into “buy now because it’s hot,” you want to ask: “Is this backed by real profit growth? Or just hope?”

Common Hype Phrases (and what they really mean)

“This is going to be massive!” → Means: The market expects big future earnings. But expectation ≠ guarantee.

“We’re in an AI bubble!” → Means: The price of many AI stocks is high vs their earnings. The risk comes if growth slows.

“Profit will follow.” → That’s the hope/promise. If profit doesn’t follow, risk of correction rises.

So What Should You Do?

We don’t know whether the bubble will burst tomorrow or keep expanding. The big flex is understanding the mechanics so you’re less vulnerable to surprise, hype, or confusion.

If you keep showing up, keep doing the work of asking questions about what you own and stick to your plan, that matters far more than trying to guess every market move.

Take a look at one of your stocks and ask: “What’s the earnings? What’s the price? What am I paying for?”

Stay curious about the “E” (profit, revenue) not just the “P” (price).

Lean into content like this — small nuggets, clear words, and real empowerment.

Ask your advisor or the next guy who throws you a hot stock tip: “What assumptions are built in? What has to go right for this to work?”

You don’t need to figure out everything. But you do need to know you’re asking the right questions.

You’ve got this. Keep learning. Keep owning your seat in the room.

Bullish Habits is a reader-supported publication.
