If I changed my mind, I wanted you to know what happened. If I made a decision somebody didn’t agree with, suddenly I was presenting evidence like we were in court.

And I told myself I was just explaining.

But somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t always explaining. Sometimes I was asking for permission after I had already made the decision.

Sheesh.😮‍💨

That one made me sit with myself for a minute because I started noticing how much energy I was spending trying to make my choices make sense to other people. I didn’t just want to make the decision. I wanted everybody to understand the decision, agree that it was reasonable, and preferably tell me they would’ve done the same thing.

But that’s exhausting.

Because sometimes people aren’t going to understand why you’re doing something differently. They don’t live inside your head. They haven’t had every conversation you’ve had with yourself. They don’t know what something has been costing you or what you’ve been wrestling with when nobody else was around.

And honestly, sometimes they just disagree.

I’m learning to be okay with that.

There’s a difference between communicating with the people who are affected by my decisions and feeling like I owe everybody an explanation for them. The people I love deserve communication. But everybody doesn’t get a presentation, supporting documents, and a Q&A just because I made a choice they wouldn’t have made.

At this stage of my life, I’m much more protective of the energy I spend trying to be understood.

Sometimes my no can simply be no. Sometimes I changed my mind because I changed my mind. Sometimes something doesn’t work for me anymore. And sometimes the only person who needs to understand why I made a decision is me.

Because maybe the goal was never to become so good at explaining myself that nobody could disagree with me.

Maybe the healthier thing is becoming comfortable enough with myself that they can.

And I think that’s where the peace comes in. When I stop spending so much energy trying to manage how somebody else feels about my choices, I have more of that energy for the life I’m actually trying to live.

That feels worth it to me.

Worth It Wednesday: What are you still over-explaining because a part of you wants someone else to tell you it’s okay?

Sit with that one.

Candice

Worth It Wednesday is my free midweek conversation inside The Reinvention Years about what’s actually worth our time, energy, money, attention, effort, and peace at this stage of our lives.

If this conversation made you think, Monday is where I go deeper. That’s where I share the personal stories, uncomfortable truths, and real-life experiences behind my own reinvention, the things I don’t unpack all the way here. Paid subscribers also receive my monthly Letters After the Letter audio reflections and quarterly live conversations.

If Wednesday feels like your kind of conversation, come sit with me on Mondays. If I said no, I needed you to understand why. If I changed my mind, I wanted you to know what happened. If I made a decision somebody didn’t agree with, suddenly I was presenting evidence like we were in court.

The Reinvention Years is a reader-supported publication. Sometimes I was asking for permission after I had already made the decision.

Mannnn.

Worth It Wednesday:

Where are you spending too much energy trying to get someone to understand a decision you’ve already made?

Sit with that one.

Candice

Worth It Wednesday is my free midweek conversation inside The Reinvention Years about what’s actually worth our time, energy, money, attention, effort, and peace at this stage of our lives.

If this conversation made you think, Monday is where I go deeper. That’s where I share the personal stories, uncomfortable truths, and real-life experiences behind my own reinvention…the things I don’t unpack all the way here.

And this week is a good week to join us. This Thursday, August 27 at 7 PM ET, I’m hosting our quarterly Live Q&A exclusively for paid subscribers. We’re taking these conversations off the page and talking together in real time.

Paid subscribers also receive my monthly Letters After the Letter audio reflections, full Monday letters, and quarterly live conversations.

If Wednesday feels like your kind of conversation, come sit with me on Mondays …and join us live this Thursday. I needed to understand why something happened, why somebody did what they did, why things ended the way they did, or why I never got the apology I thought I deserved. Somewhere in my mind, I had convinced myself that if I could just understand it, then I could finally put it down.

The problem was, sometimes the answer never came.

And even when it did, it didn’t always make me feel better.

That was probably the bigger lesson for me. I had given other people way too much responsibility for my ability to move forward. I was waiting for a conversation, an explanation, an apology, some missing piece of information that would finally make everything make sense.

But baby, some things are never going to make sense.

Some people aren’t going to give you the apology. Some conversations aren’t going to happen. Some endings will always have unanswered questions. And I’ve learned that continuing to knock on a closed door looking for an explanation can cost you more peace than the explanation is worth.

At some point, I had to ask myself what I actually wanted more: the answer or my freedom?

Because those aren’t always waiting in the same place.

For me, getting healthier emotionally has meant learning that I don’t need somebody else to complete every story for me. Sometimes I get to decide that what happened was enough information. Sometimes the way I was treated was the answer. Sometimes the ending itself was the closure.

And sometimes I simply have to say, I may never understand this, but I’m not carrying it with me anymore.

That kind of closure doesn’t require anybody else to participate.

And these days, I think that kind might be worth a whole lot more.

Worth It Wednesday:

What are you still waiting for someone else to give you before you’ll give yourself permission to move forward?

You’re supposed to let it go. Give them grace. Don’t take it personally. Understand where they’re coming from. Don’t respond. Don’t make it a big deal. Keep the peace.

Okay, but whose peace are we keeping?

Because if everybody else gets to walk away comfortable while I’m the one replaying the conversation in my head, biting my tongue, and carrying feelings I wasn’t allowed to express, I’m starting to wonder if being the bigger person is actually worth what it’s costing me.

And that’s the part I’ve been thinking about lately: the cost.

At this stage of my life, I’m paying a lot more attention to what things cost me beyond money. What does it cost me in time? Energy? Attention? Peace? What am I spending just to keep something going that may not even deserve that much of me anymore?

Baby, some of these bills are getting too damn high.

That doesn’t mean every situation deserves a confrontation. Sometimes walking away really is the healthiest thing you can do. But I’m learning there’s a difference between choosing peace and constantly choosing silence so everybody else can stay comfortable.

Maybe that’s part of getting healthier. You stop automatically asking, How do I keep everybody happy? and start asking, What is this costing me?

Because my time has a cost. My energy has a cost. My attention has a cost.

And my peace definitely has a cost.

Peace that requires me to constantly abandon myself is too expensive.

And baby, I’m not paying that bill anymore.

Worth It Wednesday:

What are you currently paying for with your peace that simply isn’t worth the price?

Sit with that one.

Candice

Worth It Wednesday is my free midweek conversation about what’s actually worth our time, energy, money, attention, effort, and peace at this stage of our lives.

If this conversation made you think, you’ll probably love what happens on Mondays. That’s when I go deeper inside The Reinvention Years, sharing the personal stories, lessons, and conversations that are shaping my own reinvention. They talk about healing. They talk about growth as if it’s this beautiful, exciting journey where you finally step into the life you’ve always wanted. And sometimes it is.

But what about the grief.

Not the grief of losing other people. The grief of leaving behind a version of myself.

For a long time, I thought that if I ever changed my life, it would feel like relief. I imagined waking up one day, confidently walking away from the woman I’d been, never looking back because I’d finally become the woman I was meant to be.

Instead, I found myself missing her.

Because the truth is, something was wrong. I was living in survival mode. Somewhere along the way, surviving stopped being something I was doing and quietly became someone I was. I became so good at carrying everything, fixing everything, anticipating everything, and pushing through that I didn’t even realize I’d built an identity around simply making it through.

The woman I was made decisions from that place. She loved from that place. She built a career from that place. She showed up for everyone around her from that place. And you know what, I have so much compassion for her because she wasn’t weak. She was incredibly resourceful. She learned how to keep going when stopping didn’t feel like an option. She figured things out. She adapted. She survived.

Looking back now, I realize I let her drive for a very long time.

She had to.

She was driving through seasons where survival was the assignment. She didn’t have the luxury of daydreaming about what else was possible because she was too busy making sure we stayed afloat. She was keeping the bills paid, figuring things out, making impossible decisions, and doing whatever needed to be done to keep life moving forward. When you’re working that hard just to keep your head above water, you don’t spend much time wondering what else might exist beyond survival. You’re just trying not to sink.

She made the best decisions she could with the information, strength, and resources she had at the time. She knew how to get us through seasons I didn’t think we’d survive, and because she was so good at it, I stopped questioning whether she was still supposed to be the one behind the wheel.

And if I’m honest…

She got me here.

That’s why leaving her was harder than I ever expected. It doesn’t feel like walking away from someone I hated. It felt like saying goodbye to someone who spent years protecting me. Someone who carried me through seasons that the woman I’m becoming will never have to survive.

Sometimes I catch myself negotiating with the idea of becoming someone new. I remind myself that everything in my life wasn’t bad. There were so many beautiful moments. She did the best she could. So why doesn’t that feel like enough anymore?

But underneath all of those thoughts is the question I’ve been almost afraid to ask:

Am I being ungrateful for wanting more?

More work. More responsibility. More growth. I don’t think I realized that this decade would ask me to question so many things I thought I had already figured out.

Over the last several years, I’ve changed careers, moved to a new city where I knew almost no one, rebuilt my health, lost over 40 pounds, started new ventures, and let go of versions of success that no longer felt aligned with the life I wanted to create. Looking back, I can see that none of those decisions happened overnight. They happened one choice at a time.

What surprises me most is that reinvention rarely looks the way we think it will. We tend to imagine a big moment. A breakthrough. A dramatic turning point. In reality, it often begins with a quiet realization that something no longer fits.

For me, it wasn’t that my life was bad. In many ways, I was grateful for what I had built. But there came a point where I could no longer ignore the feeling that there was more available to me. Not more in terms of achievement, but more in terms of alignment. More joy. More peace. More intention. More honesty about what I actually wanted.

That realization changed the way I think about self-care.
