The same cup, drunk in silence for two minutes before the day begins, is a ritual. One depletes; one returns you to yourself.

The same is true of getting dressed. Reaching for whatever’s clean, without a thought, is a routine. Choosing - even for thirty seconds - what today’s version of you actually wants to wear, is a ritual. Nothing changes about the clothes. Everything changes about the woman putting them on.

I used to think alignment came from getting my whole life “right” - the perfect system, the optimised schedule.

It doesn’t.

Alignment is built in small, repeated returns - tiny moments where you step out of momentum and ask:

Is this still me? Is this still mine?

You don’t need an hour or a retreat. You need a few deliberate pauses woven into the life you already have: a breath at the threshold of your front door, a question before you open your laptop, a moment of stillness before you reply, a pause before you dress.

These are the hinges a sustainable life turns on - not a dramatic overhaul, but quiet, repeated alignment.

Because sustainability doesn’t begin with what we buy. It begins with how we choose to live.

When we live in alignment with our values, we naturally consume more consciously, lead with greater integrity, and make decisions that are kinder to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. The outer changes we hope to see are the result of the inner choices we make every day.

That’s the whole premise of The Sustainable Self: not a bigger life, a more attentive one.

What’s one routine in your day you could turn into a ritual this week?

Thanks for reading The Sustainable Self ! href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/your-choices-really-own-lou-stokes-tw5ze/">cost of living on autopilot and how much of our lives run on patterns we never quite chose on purpose. It came up again in the Conscious Choice Workshop that followed, and in so many of your replies, almost always as a version of the same question:

Thanks for reading The Sustainable Self ! And it’s smaller than you’d think.

Somewhere between the impulse and the action, there’s a gap. It can be tiny, sometimes only a breath wide. The urge to reach for your phone, and the reaching. The pull toward the cart, and the buying. The sharp reply forming, and the saying of it. Most of us move straight through that gap without ever noticing it’s there.

But that gap is where everything actually happens.

We tend to imagine that our lives change in big decisions, the clean break, the new habit, the grand commitment. In my experience, it lives somewhere much quieter: in the half-second where you catch yourself, and choose.

When I introduced The Sustainable Self, I called this regulation, creating space between impulse and action. What I’ve come to appreciate is how trainable that space is. It isn’t willpower, which tends to run out by the afternoon. It’s presence: the simple, repeatable act of noticing you’re about to react, and pausing long enough to choose differently.

You won’t catch it every time. I don’t. But each time you find the pause, it widens a little. And a widened pause slowly changes everything downstream of it.

I notice it most in small, ordinary moments. The pause before I reach for my phone. The pause in a conversation, before the quick reply. The pause in front of an open wardrobe, the one that turns what should I buy into what do I already have that feels like me. Same gap, every time. Just a breath, and a choice.

This is why I said last time that conscious living begins with conscious choosing. What I’d add now is this: conscious choosing begins with a pause.

An Invitation

Pick one moment you usually move through on autopilot, the first reach for your phone, the mid-afternoon scroll, the automatic yes or rushing to purchase the next item in the shopping cart. The next time it arrives, don’t try to change it.

Just pause. One breath. No judgement. And notice what’s actually there:

What am I reaching for, underneath the reaching?

Is this aligned with who I’m becoming or simply familiar?

What would I choose, if I were choosing on purpose?

You don’t have to do anything with the answer. Noticing is the whole practice. The choice tends to follow on its own, in time.

Because the work was never to control every impulse.

It was to create enough space to meet them.

What do you find, when you pause?

Lou Stokes is the Founder of The Sustainable Self, Conscious Fashion, Embodied Leadership and Intentional living. on the back of beautifully designed brand packaging.

Buy less. Buy better.

Thanks for reading The Sustainable Self! It gets shared. It gets printed on tote bags, which is its own kind of irony.

And I understand why it took hold. After decades of relentless overconsumption, telling people to slow down and invest in quality felt radical. It still does, in some circles. But I’ve been teaching sustainable fashion at university level for years, running yoga retreats, sitting with women in rooms where we actually talk about their relationship to their wardrobes and their bodies and their sense of self and I can tell you with certainty:

Buying better is not the answer.

Not because it’s wrong. But because it starts in the wrong place.

The industry’s blind spot

The conscious fashion movement has done extraordinary work exposing the damage caused by fast fashion: the environmental cost, the human cost, the psychological cost of a culture that tells us we are always one purchase away from the version of ourselves we want to be.

But in its efforts to fix consumption, it has largely focused on the product. Better materials. Better certifications. Better supply chains. Better brands. The implicit promise is: if we can just redirect your spending toward the right things, the problem is solved.

It isn’t.

Because the problem was never really about the shopping. The shopping is a symptom.

What’s actually underneath it

I’ve worked with women who have sustainable wardrobes full of thoughtfully sourced pieces and who still feel completely disconnected from how they look. Still open their wardrobe every morning and feel nothing fits. Still buy things they don’t need, even when those things are ethically made.

I’ve also worked with women who couldn’t tell you a thing about fibre provenance or factory audits and who have an extraordinarily clear, grounded relationship with how they dress. Who waste almost nothing because they know exactly what they’re looking for and why.

The difference isn’t knowledge. It isn’t budget. It isn’t even access to better brands.

It’s self-knowledge.

The women who get dressed with ease, who consume thoughtfully without making it a constant act of moral discipline, who feel genuinely expressed by their wardrobes, they know who they are. They trust themselves. Their relationship with what they wear is an extension of a much deeper relationship with their own values, their own bodies, their own sense of what they’re here to do.

You cannot shortcut to that through better shopping.

Why behaviour change without self-knowledge doesn’t stick

This is what I keep coming back to in my university lectures, in my retreats, in conversations with women trying to align their lives with their values and finding it harder than it should be.

We are asking people to change behaviour without doing the foundational work first.

Sustainable fashion education, at its best, asks: what should you know about what you’re buying? It rarely asks: who are you, and what do your choices actually say about how you see yourself?

And so women make the shift, for a while. They clean out their wardrobes. They research better brands. They feel virtuous. And then life gets complicated, and the old patterns creep back, because the root was never addressed.

The root is always the self.

What a different starting point looks like

Imagine approaching your wardrobe, your consumption, your leadership, your business, your body, not from a place of discipline and guilt management, but from a place of genuine self-knowledge.

You know your values clearly enough that they actually guide decisions, rather than conflicting with them.

You have a relationship with your body that is grounded and honest, not shaped entirely by what the market told you it should look like.

You understand your own style as an expression of identity, not as a performance for someone else’s approval.

From that place, sustainable choices don’t feel like sacrifice. They feel obvious. They feel like integrity. They are just you, acting in alignment with who you actually are.

That is what I mean by the sustainable self. Not a set of shopping rules. Not a certification to achieve. A way of being in your body, in your wardrobe, in your work that is rooted, expressed, and genuinely yours.

This is where we start

This Substack is not about what to buy.

It’s about who you are underneath everything you’ve been told to buy, to wear, to perform, and to present.

It’s about the intersection of conscious fashion, embodied practice, and values-led leadership and the belief that real sustainability begins with the self.

If you’ve outgrown the conversation that conscious fashion has mostly been having, you’re in the right place.

We start with you. We start from the inside.

That’s the only place any of this actually changes.

Lou Stokes is the Founder of The Sustainable Self, Conscious Fashion, Embodied Leadership and Intentional living.
