A lot of CAD time and budget tends to get wasted before the actual design work even starts.

I’ve worked on plenty of projects where the first few hours, days, or even weeks were spent doing things like:

Tracing aerial imagery.
Sourcing and cleaning up old city or gov data.
Getting survey and creating site topography.
Hunting down missing site information.

Or trying to figure out whether the existing data was even accurate enough to use.

The problem isn’t always how fast we can draft.

Sometimes it’s the quality of the information we’re starting with.

And the better your base data is, the faster everything that follows becomes.

That’s why I’ve been such a proponent and active user of AI and Ecopia in particular lately.

Quick AutoCAD Tip: Don’t Trace More Than You Need

If you’re using aerial imagery, PDFs, GIS data, or consultant drawings as background information, avoid immediately tracing everything into AutoCAD.

Instead:

• Attach or reference the source first
• Identify exactly what your design actually needs
• Import or create only the useful geometry
• Keep reference data on organized layers or Xrefs

This keeps your drawings cleaner and can save a surprising amount of unnecessary drafting.

The goal isn’t to recreate the entire world in CAD.

It’s to have the right information available when you need it.

What I like most about it isn’t simply that it uses AI.

It’s that the AI is being applied to a repetitive task we already spend a lot of time doing: turning imagery into useful design data, and then qualified professionals are QA/QCing the data before we even see it. .

For the right project, that can mean:

• Less manual tracing
• Faster base-plan creation
• More detailed existing-condition information
• Less time preparing data before design begins

That’s the kind of automation I’m most interested in.

Not replacing the designer.

Just removing the repetitive work so we can spend more time actually designing.

A while back, I was working on a project when we realized we needed one more piece of existing site information.

Nothing major.

Just a feature that hadn’t been picked up clearly enough during the original survey.

The problem?

The survey had been done weeks ago.

Now something that might have taken a few minutes in the field turned into emails, digging through photos and notes, and in the end it needed another trip back to the site.

Costing us money, and Time!

If you’ve worked in civil, surveying, architecture, or engineering long enough, you’ve probably dealt with some version of this.

And it highlights a bigger problem with the traditional workflow:

We only bring back the information we thought we’d need at the time.

But reality capture has changed this quite a bit.

Instead of individually shooting every curb, ditch, tree, utility pole, fence post, sign, and spot elevation, we can capture an incredibly detailed digital record of the site once...

Then extract the information we need later.

And with newer “digital surveying” tools, we’re getting much better at turning that massive amount of reality data into something we can actually use in CAD.

Don’t Let Survey Data Destroy Your Layer Standards

One of the easiest ways to create a messy base plan is importing survey or consultant data directly into your working drawing without cleaning it first.

Instead, create a dedicated Survey / Existing Conditions Xref and standardize it before using it throughout your project.

A few things I like to check:

• Layer names and properties

• Units and coordinate system

• Duplicate or overlapping geometry

• Unnecessary points and objects

• Z elevations

• Linetypes

• Blocks and symbols

If the incoming layers don’t match your standards, LAYTRANS is a great tool for mapping them to your existing layer structure.

Clean it once.

Xref it into the project.

Then every drawing uses the same organized source of truth.

Turn LiDAR Into a Usable AutoCAD & Civil 3D Survey

We’ve gotten incredibly good at collecting reality data.

Drones, mobile mapping systems, and handheld LiDAR scanners can capture millions of points across a project site incredibly quickly.

But there’s still a problem...

Someone has to turn all of that data into a usable drawing.

That’s what I wanted to explore in this week’s video.

I’m testing Mach9 Digital Surveyor, which is designed to automate and streamline the process between:

LiDAR Scan → Survey Data → CAD Drawing

Using a real roadway scan from San Francisco, I walk through how Digital Surveyor can automatically identify and generate a large portion of the existing site linework.

Curbs
Road edges
Markings
Trees
Poles
Signs
And more

It can even automatically organize those features onto the correct CAD layers using predefined or custom layer templates.

From there, I test some of its semi-automated surveying tools.

The Linear Extraction Tool helps build and refine curb, gutter, roadway, and other linear features without manually clicking every vertex.

A Cross Section Tool lets you slice through the point cloud and quickly QA/QC the extracted geometry.

And the Grid of Points Tool lets you generate useful terrain and survey points from the scan without bringing millions of unnecessary LiDAR points into Civil 3D.

Once everything is cleaned up and verified...

We export the finished survey directly to a DWG and open it in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

That’s the part of this workflow I find most interesting.

We’re not just collecting more data.

We’re getting much better at turning that data into something designers can actually use.

TECH TOOL OF THE WEEK

Mach9 Digital Surveyor

What it does:
Turns LiDAR and reality-capture datasets into usable CAD, GIS, and survey information.

Why it’s interesting:
Digital Surveyor combines automatic feature extraction with semi-automated CAD and surveying tools.

Instead of manually tracing an entire point cloud, much of the initial linework can be generated automatically.

You can then review it, refine missing features, create additional survey points, verify geometry using cross sections, and export the finished result to DWG.

One feature I especially like is the ability to create or import your own layer templates.

That means the software can identify a curb, tree, pole, road edge, or other feature and automatically place it onto the layer that matches your existing CAD standards.

The end result is a workflow that looks something like:

Scan the Site → Automatically Extract Features → Digitally Survey → QA/QC → Export DWG → Start Designing

And I think that’s where reality capture becomes really powerful.

You’re no longer limited to only the individual features someone thought to survey that day.

If you need another curb line, terrain point, or roadway feature later in the project, the information may already exist in your scan.

You just need to extract it.

Less repetitive drafting. Fewer unanswered questions. Faster base plans.

Don’t wait until the end of a project to create your first PDF.

Generate check plots throughout the design process.

It’s one of the simplest ways to catch:

Fixing a small issue today is much easier than fixing twenty of them the day before a deadline.

When I came into the industry years ago, if someone told me I’d be using AI to generate 3D models, automate drawing reviews, create site plans from aerial imagery, and collect site data with a handheld scanner, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.

One lesson I’ve learned over the years is that the quality of your design is often limited by the quality of the information you start with.

Early in my career, I was certainly guilty of taking the shortcut/fastest setup route.

A survey or package of base linework would come in, and instead of properly organizing it into a clean Xref base drawing with organized layers, I’d simply paste everything directly into my working file and start designing right away.

It always feels faster at the time…

The problem usually shows up weeks or months later in the process.

A revised survey would arrive.
Additional utility information would be added.
New topographic data would come in.

Suddenly, updating every drawing became a headache, and keeping everything coordinated took far more time than I “saved” at the beginning.

Today, one of the first things I do on a project is create organized, accurate base drawings and reference them into my design files using Xrefs. That way, when new information arrives, I only need to update it once, and every related drawing automatically reflects the change.

Whether you’re working in civil engineering, architecture, surveying, or construction, having accurate and reliable base data can make or break a project’s budget, schedule, and quality.

This week I’ve been testing something that honestly feels a bit like the future of site visits and existing condition work.

As designers and engineers, we’ve all done it at least at some point in our careers.

Walking around a site with a tape measure, taking dozens of photos, scribbling notes on printed plans, and then inevitably realizing back at the office that we missed something important. Whether it was on us, surveyors or even the client, missing data/info can cause issues.

It usually leads to:

• another site visit

• missing dimensions

• uncertainty

• or trying to piece together incomplete information later

Recently I had the chance to test a 3D LiDAR scanner called the Realsee Galois P4, and it completely changed how I think about capturing existing conditions.

Instead of manually documenting everything, the scanner creates a full digital twin of the site that can then be brought directly into CAD workflows.

Honestly… seeing a real site turned into a usable point cloud and CAD-ready data in minutes was pretty impressive.

Quick Tip: Use Existing Condition Data to Improve Design Accuracy

One of the fastest ways to improve drawing quality and reduce costly rework is improving the quality of your existing condition information.

Even simple things like:

• accurate measurements

• current site imagery

• elevations/slopes

• surrounding objects and utilities

• vegetation and landscaping

• roadway geometry

…can drastically improve concept planning and reduce design conflicts later on.

Modern tools like LiDAR scanning and point clouds are making this easier and more accessible than ever before, especially for smaller firms and consultants.

Even if you don’t use a full 3D scanner, getting more complete and organized site information upfront will almost always save time later in the project.

Ever waste way too much time on a simple PDF?

I’ve been there.

You get a detail or pplan sent over but all you get is a df file and no CAD.
Suddenly you’re redrawing everything, trying to trace lines, double-checking dimensions… a pain and huge waste of time simply because the original CAD file went missing…

What should take 5–10 minutes turns into 30+.

The biggest issue?

Most people are using PDFs the hard way.

These things happen, but they don’t need to take us forever to digitize or setup in our drawings..

Once you understand a few simple workflows, they actually become one of the fastest parts of your process.

Quick Tip: Stop Importing Everything

Before you jump to PDFIMPORT…

Try this instead:

Use PDFATTACH (underlay) first.

• Lightweight

• Clean

• Perfect for tracing or referencing

Only import geometry if you actually need to edit it.

Most of the time:
Attach → Scale → Trace what you need → Done
