Of course, climate change isn’t that straightforward. It’s bigger, it touches everything, how we power our homes, run our economies, and live our daily lives. But it’s tangled up in politics, money, and competing interests in a way the ozone crisis never quite was.

This aligns with Finland’s broader social philosophy: that happiness, health, and social equality are just as important as economic success. It’s no coincidence that Finland has consistently ranked as the world’s happiest country for several years in a row.

The Benefits of a Shorter Workweek

3. Economic Concerns for Employers : Some business owners worry that paying the same salary for fewer hours could hurt profitability, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Transitioning to a 4-days model might also require significant cultural and structural adjustments.

The reason is simple but uncomfortable: these platforms didn’t fail because Twitter users were loyal to a brand or Elon Musk. they failed because they misunderstood what Twitter (X) actually was.

Most social platforms are built around content, Twitter on the other hand was built around events.

It functioned as:

• a public arena for political and cultural conflict

• a discovery engine where journalists, celebrities, institutions, and ordinary users collided.

Twitter was never designed to be comfortable, It was designed to be fast. Replacing Twitter meant rebuilding this infrastructure, not just recreating the timeline or the character limit. Its alternatives tried to improve Twitter by removing its worst qualities, without realising those qualities were also its strengths.

Threads : Scale Without Urgency

On paper, Threads had everything it needed to succeed.

It launched with:

• Meta’s financial power

• instant access to Instagram’s massive user base

• a clean, familiar interface

But Threads misunderstood why people use Twitter in moments that matter.

Threads prioritises:

• brand safety

• positive engagement

• algorithmic calm

Twitter thrives on:

• breaking news

• raw, unfiltered reactions

• public disagreement

On Twitter, news breaks before it is confirmed.

On Threads, it appears once it is safe to discuss.

This makes Threads pleasant but irrelevant during moments of urgency. When something major happens in the world, users don’t want polished discourse. They want immediacy,

Bluesky: The Right People, Not Enough People

Bluesky came closest to recreating the spirit of early Twitter.

It attracted:

• writers

• developers

• journalists

• long-time Twitter power users

For many, it felt like a return to thoughtful conversation. But that promise was repeatedly undercut by practical issues.

As user numbers grew, Bluesky struggled with technical instability. Users frequently reported problems logging in, intermittent outages, slow performance, and features that felt unfinished or unreliable. For a platform positioning itself as a serious alternative to Twitter, these issues created friction at the worst possible time, just as people were looking for a stable new home.

Beyond the technical quirks, Bluesky also lacked the scale and discovery mechanisms that made Twitter addictive. Conversations often felt siloed, and growth felt uneven. Instead of becoming a true public square, it felt more like a promising beta that never fully left its testing phase.

Bluesky didn’t fail because the idea was wrong.

Mastodon may be the most principled Twitter alternative.

It offers:

• decentralisation

• freedom from corporate ownership

But Twitter’s success was never rooted in ethics. It was rooted in simplicity.

Mastodon asks users to:

• choose servers

• understand federation

• learn platform-specific social rules

Twitter asked none of that.

You joined. You posted. You watched the world respond.

For a platform built on speed and visibility, Mastodon’s friction was fatal. Most users don’t want to understand infrastructure, they just want to speak.

The Common Mistake They All Made

Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon all tried to remove Twitter’s most criticised traits:

• Chaos

• Conflict

• Unpredictability

But those weren’t flaws, they were part of what made Twitter, Twitter.

Twitter mirrored society in real time. Messy, loud, contradictory, and uncomfortable. Sanitising that didn’t produce a better Twitter. It produced something else entirely.

Why Twitter (X) Still Survives

Twitter (X ) still survives not because it is universally loved or well-managed, but because it occupies a space no one else has successfully rebuilt.

It remains:

• the fastest place for breaking news

• the loudest digital public square

• the most chaotic discovery engine on the internet.

Twitter is not a community.

It is infrastructure.

And that infrastructure is far harder to replace than an app.
