In our first essay, we wrote about understanding each other in different languages. Looking back now, we realize language was only part of the story.

People often assume the biggest challenge in a relationship like ours is learning how to speak to each other. It isn’t, at least in our case. Simply because language can be learned, but the harder part is realizing that the person you love grew up in a completely different version of the world.

Before we met, we had both spent more than two decades becoming experts in our own normal– we had our own way of celebrating birthdays, talking to our friends and families, working, and spending our free time. Each of us built a structure around every aspect of our lives, such as the way we communicate, how affection is shown, how conflict is handled… and none of it ever felt unusual because it was simply the way life worked.

Then we met each other.

At first, the differences were fun. We laughed about words that meant different things, the foods we missed from home, the songs one of us knew by heart while the other had never heard before. It all felt charming, intriguing, refreshing. We thought understanding each other would simply be a matter of time.

However the difficult part came later, when the differences became quieter. They started showing up in places we weren’t expecting: in the way we made plans, in how we apologized, in what each of us imagined when we said we wanted to spend time together. Sometimes one of us would walk away from a conversation feeling deeply cared for (or deeply hurt, even), while the other would quietly wonder if anything meaningful had actually been said.

Neither of us was trying to love the other the wrong way, of course. We were simply loving the way we had learned to. And that’s a difficult thing to notice, because we rarely question the kind of love we grew up with until you start having to adapt to someone else’s structure, which is usually completely different, in order to make things work out and continue building upwards.

Over time, maybe not that long ago, we’ve stopped asking ourselves who is right. Instead, we’ve started asking a different question: what does this mean to you? It sounds simple, but it isn’t. Sometimes the answer surprises us. Sometimes it changes us. More often than not, it reminds us that understanding another person has very little to do with agreeing with them.

We still misunderstand each other. Probably more often than we’d like, we admit that. The difference is that now, instead of assuming we already know what the other means, we ask. Asking instead of assuming makes a huge difference, and it has become one of the most meaningful ways we know how to love each other.

Lately, we’ve been realizing something else too: that we didn’t arrive in this relationship empty-handed. We brought expectations we had never questioned, simply because they had always felt normal.

It was already dark when I arrived. The apartment was quiet, lit only by the warm lights from the living room.

I entered still wearing my gym clothes, my bag across my body and the heat of the workout trapped beneath my shirt. My shoulders were tired, and there was still sweat drying against my skin.

I closed the door and placed my keys on the table.

Then I looked toward the living room.

Ian was stretching on the mat near the window. His hands were pressed against the floor, his legs apart and his body folded forward beneath the yellow light.

For a moment, I stayed near the entrance and watched him.

Four years had passed since that other scene. We were in another apartment, our routines had changed, and so much had happened between us.

But the effect he had on me was exactly the same.

Ian did not turn around when I arrived, but I noticed a small pause in his movement when the keys touched the table.

He knew I was home.

I left my bag near the entrance and pulled off my shirt. The air felt cooler against my warm skin as I began walking toward him.

When Ian gives me his full attention, I become fixed on him. Everything else in the room seems to move farther away. He knows exactly how long to hold my eyes and how still to remain while I am the one losing patience.

“You’re staring,” he said.

“I know.”

There was something in the way he said it that made going to the shower feel impossible.

He guided me closer without taking his eyes away from mine.

I leaned over him, placing one hand on the mattress. Ian moved onto his back and let his hand travel from my wrist to my arm, then around the back of my neck.

So… the conversation started just as the sun was beginning to set on a warm Sunday evening. One of us was sitting on the couch, the other gently rocking back and forth in the hammock in our living room.

At first, it felt like any other conversation– we were talking about something small, something neither of us can fully remember now. The thing is somehow, by the time the sky had turned dark, we were no longer talking about the same thing.

We weren’t yelling., we weren’t saying anything particularly hurtful, we were just... missing each other. And it took us longer than we’d like to admit to realize we weren’t arguing about the same thing.

One of us was trying to explain a feeling, the other was trying to solve a problem.

One of us was speaking through the words, the other was listening for the meaning behind them.

Neither approach was wrong.

But somewhere between three languages and two very different ways of growing up, we had quietly learned to hear different things in the exact same sentence.

We’ve noticed this happens more often than people think. Because language goes beyond vocabulary and grammar. It’s where we learned to express. To apologize. To disagree.

It’s where we learned what silence means, what affection sounds like, and how love ends up feeling like when something hurts.

Some expressions and some emotions don’t survive translation.

There are moments when “I’m fine” carries a completely different weight depending on who says it, and there are jokes that only one of us understands instinctively.

There are words we avoid because they sound harsher in one language than another, even if they mean exactly the same thing.

When people ask us which language we speak together, we usually laugh. The honest answer is...

all of them. And none of them completely.

Over time, we’ve become less interested in saying the perfect words and more interested in making sure the other person feels understood. Of course those aren’t always the same thing.

We’re still learning. Not just new words, but new ways of listening.

By the time the room had gone completely dark that evening, we hadn’t solved the argument.

But we had started understanding it.

And maybe that’s what loving someone from another culture really asks of you– curiosity. Not fluency.

Just the willingness to believe that, sometimes, the other person isn’t saying the wrong thing. They’re simply speaking from a world you’ve never lived in.

Only familiarity.

The quiet confidence of two people who no longer need to explain every invitation to come closer.

Tired versions.

Versions that were angry, distracted, hopeful or unsure.
