I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — it’s never been easier to make a media project and get it to an audience. It’s a simple true statement. There’s an upside and a downside in it, and it’s important to recognize a few points:

• It doesn’t mean it’s easy to create ANY media project and get it to an audience - some formats are harder than others.

• It doesn’t mean building an audience is easy or simple — and that takes TIME.

• The business model for media is at best — in significant transition. The returns traditional media productions are different, and there are dozens of competing models to make money from content that all get mixed together for creative teams.

• Competition for audiences is with everyone who can do this, so everyone else on Earth, and a bunch of AI slop factories making more than those humans ever could per hour.

• Artistic endeavors (which all media is when I’m talking about it) are still challenging to create, they’re real work, and creating high level work requires significant initial investment (time, money, resources) to achieve.

• Building productions that hire and pay people requires knowledge, creativity, business and production expertise and financing. None of which are easy either.

Writing about opportunities for people to create, work or even exist feels fraught because of the profound changes affecting every part of our lives. It drives one to quote notorious characters from novels to a degree that is uncomfortable.

On the plus side, I also get to quote one of my favorite characters — who’s not exactly a good guy, he’s actually THAT GUY (iykyk).

We’re in a period of extreme transition an epochal shift — our social, cultural and technological jungle is tearing itself down and we’re all caught up in THE CHURN.

It’s chaotic. It’s bigger than any individuals ability to stop. It’s too big, too complicated, too messy, and the best we can do is fight for the people beside us and adapt.

Those of you who know me personally, may know that while I talk about a lot of dark and unpleasant topics and don’t shy away from examining the significant challenges we face in a given situation. I’m actually an optimist. I firmly believe that when making decisions it’s better to know what you’re up against, and that opportunities are often at the edges of wicked problems that become clear only when you really look at them.

So let me get to today’s point — what is working in this year’s theatrical releases?

A SPLIT SCREEN INDUSTRY

The Churn is coming from a few directions, obviously AI is part of it. Studio mergers and consolidation is part of it. The swirling polycrisis of global geopolitical upheaval adds in some flavor. We have a series of industrial forces swirling like jet skis to create the Charybdis in Christopher Nolan’s record-breaking epic The Odyssey.

But it’s critical to look at one specific element of our the four jet-skis of the current media apocalypse: The technical and economic maturation of digital content networks.

One of the biggest reasons that it’s never been easier to reach an audience is the rise of free streaming networks - YouTube of course, being the #1 player. YouTube has served as a global public access television network for the better part of 20 years, and top creators and networks put out videos with budgets that rival television episodes. One of my favorite heralds of change is Evan Shapiro who does a great job contextualizing global viewership trends.

The upshot is that YouTube is the most-viewed network on television sets globally. Full stop. It gained this crown in January and there’s no indication that it’ll lose that spot to anyone currently in competition. YouTube is a major distribution channel, where millions of people are finding audiences.

One of the most interesting elements of where YouTube is now, is not only is it a pretty mature technological system - algorithmic and recommendation tweaks aside. It’s mature enough that people can make real sustainable income from publishing directly to audiences, and find direct investment backed by attention and engagement.

YouTube’s metrics give creators the data they need to show proof of audience engagement — this can help them find sponsors, and investors. I’ll dive into this more in the coming weeks, but major investment firms and VCs are moving investment purely from the distribution technology, to the content businesses that populate them. The upshot is — if you own your IP (film, show, etc…) there are emerging opportunities to finance and distribute it. For Studios and networks, they’re incredibly powerful and robust systems designed to create and monetize creative content — but for their own reasons, they’ve de-prioritized taking the risk of investing in original content. The decisions made by studios and networks in recent years have felt very separate from the idea that the companies involved have the core purpose of making films or television. As David Rosen’s The Medium covers well, the management of IP libraries and the control of the technical pipelines that authorize its use seems to be guiding decisions beyond the development of core product slates.

So, let’s say you’re a producer or creator in the industry — you want to make stuff, you want to engage audiences, you want to pay rent and eat… how can you find a path amidst the churn? There are lots of ways to get it done, with and without traditional partners, and while it’s easier than its ever been, it’s not easy.

Tomorrow I’m moderating two panels at the New Mexico Film & Media Conference on the state of the industry regionally and nationally. One of the biggest takeaways is that we need more projects that can employ people — not everyone is built to start or run projects — but the barriers to entry and distribution that once challenged the people who can are lower. While the best time to start doing this was 10 years ago, the second best time to invest in yourself is today.


LESSONS FROM THE AFFINITY ECONOMY
So let’s look at some major hits of the last 12 months and what we can learn and apply to our own creative projects. Creators who built their audiences on YouTube have been leveraging their social and creative reputations to win at the Box Office. Yes, it’s the era of — giant sigh — Yindie Films. When we break it down, the successes these films represent are logical, in this industry even good ideas on paper fail to launch all the time, but let’s look at the core characteristics of these hits.

• Led by a creator who has millions of online viewers who tune in regularly for similar content.

• Multiple digital and social channels to promote to those millions of followers.

• Multi-year track records of creating, curating and learning what their audiences want to watch.

• The means to finance pilot versions of what became films with box office releases tested with online audiences.

• The adaptability to work with / or without traditional partners.

Reaching your audience does not just mean posting content passively on a platform and hoping for the best. It’s a combination of creative iteration, diligent work over time, understanding the distribution platforms, and engaging directly with your fan base. This is critical work in the 21st century whether you’re a production company, actor, creator/producer, brand or studio — and everyone’s doing it in the same places all at once. It’s never been easier to reach people, and it’s up to you to create something compelling enough to develop a community drawn to your project, work, persona, etc…

None of the creators that broke through Box Office stagnation were overnight successes, their wins are the results of years of community building.

OBSESSION (2026)

Curry Barker has been creating films for years. They’re just on YouTube. His horror short The Chair was viewed 10 million times in 2023. This was on his channel that’s a bad idea - which has been building over 9 years. Barker leveraged the film festival circuit smartly, but didn’t shy away from direct distribution, which meant that audience has compounded with every successful release at any scale. This is a model worth studying for any new filmmaker. Just because Barker released Obsession at 26 - doesn’t mean he wasn’t laying the foundation for this work for a decade.

BACKROOMS (2026)

The concept of the backrooms was an internet cultural icon before Kane Parsons created a film from it. That said, Parsons was a part of that culture and when he released his found footage webseries in 2022 to his YouTube channel - it was well received by the internet community that loved the concept and established production partner. The proof of concept that the webseries provided also proved a real audience appetite for his specific take on the concept. His soundscapes and concept designs from blender defining much of the look and feel of the 2026 feature film.

IRON LUNG (2026)
Markiplier is a YouTuber OG. One of the top creators on the platform with 38.9 Million followers — he has proof of audience affinity that is obvious and clear to anyone. He’s made high-budget shows before - The Edge of Sleep and several YouTube Originals. He’s no stranger to film and television, but he also — does not need traditional partners to make a profitable feature film release happen. When he licensed the popular video game, Iron Lung, he wrote, directed, stared and produced it. When traditional distributors balked at supporting a theatrical release, Markiplier had the data to show he could bring people to screens and activated his fans in a campaign that asked them to reserve tickets so that theaters could see verifiable demand for the film’s screening. It opened in 2600 theaters in North America. Markiplier also negotiated a deal with YouTube - where you can now stream Iron Lung with particular benefits to Markiplier as an aggregator - ensuring he maximizes benefits for his promotion of the work he created.

Markiplier’s audience affinity let him pioneer new models with high confidence he could succeed - and bring innovative businesses along the way in the process. While most of us don’t have millions of subscribers - more self-produced and distributed films are likely to follow in the wake of Iron Lung.

THE UNWELL GAMES (2026)

Adding in an outlier — let’s look at a creator positioning for YouTube’s next big shifts. Alix Cooper, the Gen Z icon, podcast host and influencer, launched a new content network with a competition reality show direct to YouTube. About 6 months after launch, each episode has between 830K and 1.8 Million views. This is one example among many such content networks that are primed and ready to take advantage of YouTube’s shift from “podcasts” to “stations.” The network is currently valued at $500 Million and is growing.

Now that YouTube is dominant on TV Sets, it’s moving from public access to cable television provider — partnering with other streamers and TV Channels — creators who have established their audiences are increasingly spinning off shows and channels to leverage their existing fan bases and YouTube is guideing them into a world where it’s the first place a viewer goes the YouTube homepage — and its algorithms can recommend Earle’s new reality show or Bravo’s newest series based on the viewer’s known affinity.

THE TAKEAWAYS
After this year’s massive box office returns — the patterns are clear, if you have an audience and leverage them well, the paths to production and distribution. Not all of us have millions of followers — but projects that can prove small sample audiences can find sponsors, distributors and partners more easily. Financing and sponsorship for shows and films are taking notice as well, and just today AMC launched a new initiative to bring independent films to screens more easily — diversifying the slate being shown to audiences and opening new opportunities for filmmakers.

Ask yourself: In 10 years will there be more films and shows be led by content creators who establish themselves on digital networks?

• In 10 years will the follower counts for cast, crew and content be more or less important?

• In 10 years will audiences be looking for new original work on YouTube?

So what does this mean for us, human creators stuck in the churn? How do we as creators and producers do the work to create productions that employ people — or ensure that the projects that hire us benefit most from choosing us.

TO REACH AUDIENCES, YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK TO DEVELOP YOUR COMMUNITY:

• Start exploring your voice, and sharing what you can to connect with audiences. It takes time to refine and learn and platforms prioritize consistent posting — regardless of whether those posts are your best work yet.

• If you aren’t already, seek out channels that curate content similar to your work, see how they work with other creators and if there are ways to submit or collaborate. (I personally love D.U.S.T. )

• Understand the audience math that goes into the package of your project - what is the combined reach of your cast? what platforms are their followers based on? These numbers help partners understand why your project can succeed.

• For new creative projects, strongly consider direct-to-audience distribution to prove the case that your ideas can appeal to audiences.

• None of this work pays up front. It’s a necessary part of establishing proof of affinity with audiences — and proof of reputation to professional collaborators.

• No one cares about your project or your career more than you do. You have to invest in your public presence to support your ongoing endeavors.

• Learn about monetization and optimization - it’s worth learning more about the business models for YouTube, TikTok, etc… if you plan to reach audiences with your creative content. Some of this is marketing, some of this may be a viable business model for your programming.

• This isn’t easy, take breaks — don’t quit.

It often surprises me that professionals in the entertainment industry think about their work as separate from the economy. This is a bias of mine - I got access to the highest level strategic thinking in the largest entertainment conglomerates in the world early on in my career. They think in systems, I think in systems, not everyone thinks system-first.

From this high-level view, it’s logical and clear why creators and craftspeople out of work because production has slowed where they live (Earth). Or your shows get stuck in turnaround because of a series of mergers (barf). or brands aren’t spending this quarter due to uncertainty about the price of gas (Thanks, swirling polycrisis that is the economy). You can talk endlessly about why this is happening but it doesn’t do much to salve the pain that you, your friends and colleagues feel on the ground.

The only way out is through, the answer to the problems above continues to be “make more stuff!” Which is easy enough to say, and harder to execute because the best time to have started making more stuff was a decade ago and the second best time is right now.

While we’re all feeling the pinch of consolidation, economic strain, technological upheaval and just plain human stress - the reality of this moment is that it’s never been easier to tell a story and reach a global audience.

What we make and how we make it, how we bring people along for that ride and pay them for their craft and expertise — well, that’s why this is work and not just play. And even then, there are ways for us to turn our play into sustainable incomes.

Paying projects can feel scarce, and we all have to eat. To make more projects we need people to explore creative concepts that might find audiences and gain the kind of budgets that pay our collaborators. Opportunities to create are abundant, but they take time and energy up front to realize their monetary value.

Looking across the globe, countries with more sustainable media industries invest in the earlier stages of storytelling: development, above-the-line education (business & producing, mentorship, even distribution for emerging artists on state-owned channels. In the United States, it’s the wild west. If you’re lucky enough to chance into a job that connects you to a mentor - fantastic. If you can find a set of skills you can consistently be paid for, great. Our Unions support craftspeople if you’ve gotten your foot in the door, but only in a few of the formats where audiences engage.

It’s hard to imagine what caring for each other means when we’re constantly trying to keep our own heads above water. Much less find the time to create your own work, build your own business then distribute and market your work to audiences.

• So how do we create more sustainable projects that employ people?

• What can national and state governments do to ensure a steady stream of creative productions?

• What can we do ourselves to help creators thrive?

• If we do nothing, what happens?

This is all hard and it’s what I’m asking of you. It’s worth it to understand the business, the economic factors and the culture that we create as part of this era. What we do now will create the culture and define the economy for what comes next - the best time to have done it is a decade ago. The second best time is now.

THE US FILM INDUSTRY: A $33.1 BILLION DOLLAR MICROCOSM

I’ve spent a few months in the weeds of conversations about film incentives, grants and fundraising, and I’m moderating a few panels next week at the New Mexico Film & Media Conference on the State of the Industry and the ongoing push for National level incentives. The expertise in the room will be fantastic, and New Mexico is well-positioned to attract both institutional film and television projects and support independent filmmakers — if it chooses to as a state. It’s incentives are even broad enough to support digital content and has attracted major YouTube channels to the state’s soundstages.

The issue for any place that has a significant population of crew on the ground is that the Entertainment Industry is cyclical, and even ignoring the specific factors affecting us today — productions are boom and bust and sustainable employment is not easy for anyone. What makes New York and LA different — and that chart shows a pretty significant gap — is that not only are crews and creative talent thick on the ground but Producers and IP creators are as well.

While the production of film and television projects represents a specific subset of the total media industry — the lessons here apply to digital content networks, games, and more and are worth understanding. The strongest states and countries supporting new IP and media programs are building equity in their cultural exports, which means investing in creators and concepts early.

Creative development is similar to oil and gas exploration — another big New Mexico industry — you do the best you can on paper to dig in the right place, but you won’t know if you’ve hit until you’ve drilled. The same is true for creative productions, even with the strongest teams and track record — you won’t know what you have until it hits with an audience.

There are a few ways investors (including you if you’re investing your time), governments and communities can increase the likelihood of hits:

• Mentorship & Access to Expertise - creators learn to create better work through mentorship, supporting development of projects, and connecting them to peers and industry expertise

• Investing directly in the development of projects, in addition to production - helping creative businesses reduce risk (and feed themselves)

• Showcasing & promoting projects made by the community - WIP screenings, premieres, invited screenings and talks, these events have real impact and add to credits — for independent creators every share counts.

• Providing opportunties for people to connect - Networking mixers, panels, showcases — they help people make friends. Friends make projects together.

• Keep doing it over time. There’s no shortcut to culture and that’s what builds strong artistic communities and industries. The outcomes of new initiatives take months to implement, then the creators involved have to engage, learn, produce, grow and do it again. These pieces are the foundation of the next decade of a community or region’s creative capacity.

This is an industry where stories we make up can gather budgets of millions and employ hundreds and thousands of people. The regions and communities that invest in the exploration of those assets will have thriving creative economies regardless of technological or economic shifts.

INVESTING IN ORIGINAL CREATION
The countries that get brought up the most when we think about support for media creation are Canada, The UK, and Ireland. There are many other countries that do well, France, Norway, Germany, etc… but those three have an outsized impact on the international market through licensing and cultural prestige for one major reason: the prioritize the domestic development of new intellectual properties.

CANADA
Canada has been doing this for the better part of a century — originally as film boards and now as the Canada Media Fund. They provide a variety of support systems, grants, training and support for marketing and distribution to Canadian creators and creative teams.

Their mission is to support the development of the capacity of Canadian teams to create high quality media works and innovations. Many of the projects they grant - especially original IP and experimental innovation - are explicitly granted without considering the commercial viability of the final products. They recoup on those investments through participation in those products once they’re commercialized and more than a few do very well.

The real dividends come in a few major areas: ongoing employment and on the job training for Canadian creative teams, giving domestic creators the opportunity to test and build their ideas with mentorship, access to festivals and other creative opportunties, local cultural offices that help fill in the gaps that all creators and business owners have as they grow.

They also turn out a tremendous amount of film and television that is easily licensed to other English and French speaking countries, thanks to CMF negotiated international treaties — which is why you see so many Canadian shows on US cable stations and streamers.

THE UNITED KINGDOM
The UK has a prestigious tradition of film and acting that has made waves globally since the advent of film. They also have arguably the most prestigious broadcasting channels globally in the BBC. Where the UK gains and keeps that reputation and strength is prioritizing the funding, production and distribution of IP and stories from domestic creators. If you’re a UK resident the country wants you to tell your story, and create paths not just for your work to be funded but directly distributed on BBC channels.

This is obviously a simplification of that process, and there are rarely as many opportunties for funding in a given year than applicants — but they have created a path for their citizens to tell stories and get them seen. The system requires constant training to meet demands for crew.

If the IP is owned domestically, the value of productions to the whole creative economy of the country and its tax base are clear even when some of that content is produced on location elsewhere. This is also incentivizing for IP owners and artists to stay put — and produce closer to home.

IRELAND
My Irish readers are reading this and FINALLY, us last, again. But almost no country on Earth is being as clear or progressive in support of its domestic creators as Ireland. Internationally distributed film and television are positively lousy with Irish co-productions. Their crews and talent are inarguably skillful, and working at the highest levels of premium live action, animation and VFX production. They are very good at keeping their crews at work and these activities have survived many administrations — growing in the process. I had the joy of learning more about this from Conor Harrington, who has been in the room where many of these programs were crafted — and now in addition to running his own programs consults on international coproductions and incentives.

He shared the four pillars that Ireland uses to evaluate its programs and new initiatives:

• Storytelling

• Training

• Audience

• Economy

While they offer robust incentives to international productions employing teams, and make it easy to work with their programs (partial payment at kickoff, etc…), they’ve invested heavily in Irish citizens creating intellectual properties at home. Some elements, like no tax on writing income (which for the vast majority of writers is an incredibly meaningful impact and barely a rounding error to a state) are directly supporting small and emerging creators.

Development grants are a key feature of the Irish Incentives programs - these are often smaller amounts think 4 figures, but give critical financing to creators or creative teams to get concepts into shape that COULD become a larger budget project. This doesn’t necessarily bear internationally successful fruit in year one, but your chances of having stronger offerings in market that are more producible in 5 or 10 are high.

TAKEAWAYS
If an area or community isn’t investing in itself, in the creative development of new projects early — downturns in for hire work hit hard. When there’s a steady flow of domestic projects in development and making their way into production on a more regular basis the impact of major economic shifts.

But Caitlin, you’ll say out loud to your phone, I don’t live in any of those places and I’m not a state official, lobbyist or president of an incentives program. What can I do to make sure more projects are getting made?

Good news! there are things we can all do regardless of our relative position in the industry to ensure we grow our creative teams.

1. Create a project! Hire People! — Problem solved, right? If you have the will and interest to make a project you should. It probably will take more time than you think it will, but there are many ways to do tell a good story and get it to audiences. There are also many ways to find income from those projects. If you want to make a thing, I would love to hear from you. Seek out expertise and make friends for your project and the many path to bring them to life.

2. Support your friends — creative projects are team sports. If you yourself are not creating a project or hiring, see if you can help people who are. I’m not suggesting we all put ourselves out there for free and die of exposure - but projects need friends. They need expertise. To get a concept to the point where it can be produced requires creative, production, legal, business expertise, lots of time and energy and the faith that this idea is good enough to justify it all. Support your friends, share your expertise, help out where you can, and if nothing else, cheer them on.

3. Make a scene - if you can’t find your local community, make one happen. I love New York, New York’s national pastime is networking. It’s easy to mix and mingle with folks in a big city, but if you don’t have that culture nearby how do you find it?

   • Look for local festivals or conferences, attend, volunteer, go to the afterparties

   • Show up to public events related to your industry

   • Look people up on linkedin or local social media groups — reach out and make new friends.

   • If you can’t find what you’re looking for — make one yourself. Choose an off night at a bar and invite some folks you know and ask them to invite a friend with similar interests.
     

4. Follow your local film office / talk to your local government - here in the US most major cities, counties and states have a film office — find yours and follow them. Get on their newsletter, show up to their events. Their job is to support the creative industry where you live and you’re a part of that industry.
   
   If there isn’t something like this near you, talk to your local city or county offices and see if there’s a film liason or someone whose job it is to work with creative industries. You live there, you count.
   
   They’ll know what is (or isn’t) being done and how you can lend your voice or some volunteer hours to better opportunities for local teams.

5. Share about your experiences. Share your experiences in person or online, with your local film offices, unions, professional communities, crew stories facebook groups, etc… Thoughtfully communicating your concerns and lived experiences with people who are in similar boats will help you find friends. It’s also critical to folks trying to build support for initiatives that can help need those personal narratives to support their arguments.
   

6. Don’t Quit. The best advice I’ve gotten in the industry is to not quit on your career. This doesn’t mean you don’t take jobs to eat in the meantime — I once made hats, another time I produced for a national collegiate accapella competition. I don’t know a single person in the entertainment industry who hasn’t had to take a job outside the industry occasionally because food costs money. Take the break, get that bread, your skills are transferable. But it’s a break, not an end. If you want to make films, television, games, bespoke interpretive art experiments — keep doing that! The cycles come back around and you’ll approach things with fresh eyes.
   

No part of creative projects happen overnight. Everything costs time, energy or money to bring it to life. That’s as true for the systems that support projects as it is for creative projects themselves. A refrain I’ve heard over and over is that you get out what you put into the opportunities presented to you.

We have opportunities now to support new projects, support groups pushing for better support for creative teams, exploring new formats and expressing themselves boldly.

We get to create the community that supports them together.

Last year I posited that “The Future is Here and It Is Beige,” and I wasn’t wrong. After talking about 2025’s trends, life got busy for me again:

• I refocused on some projects - fun, interesting, food costs money - list further down.

• Spend a year really learning more about the business models and funding for digital first programming (YouTube-to-TV Pilots, Attention-based financing models, vertical series)

• Family and Health - my father passed last year and it was one of the honors of my life to be near and care for him. Also, one of the most difficult times I’ve ever experienced as a human.

But dear readers, that does exactly nothing for you — I disappeared. I’ve been letting the excuses win, avoided sharing with you all, and then got sad no one is sharing anymore.

EMERGING FROM OUR BEIGE ERA

After reflection — and I have been REFLECTING a lot without getting it onto a page — I’ve grappled spiritually and strategically, creatively and with new weird production questions. Then didn’t say anything that would potentially help someone grappling with the same struggles.

TL:DR Things are still extremely beige. Here’s a sample of some of the khaki calamaties that I read about in the last month:

There’s a color recession. Brain Rot is directly linked to a range of psychological burdens. LLM companies are destroying rare books at scale. Fear of deepfakes keeps kids from connecting online. Elon Musk and others want to completely optimize your sense of sight for their curated feeds. Technological systems are no longer controled by their users, they’re built to control their user’s behaviors. AI psychosis is rampant. Especially amongst CEOs & Executives. Dating Apps are built to keep you single as long as they can. Our daily tasks are increasingly intermediated through bots. People seem to prefer AI stories to human written ones (maybe it’s the consistent punctuation?). The Fun shortage is real (theme park attendance is too expensive). Our “automated” robots are often run by humans in call centers. Our era is being described as “decadence without pleasure.” OMG. So beige.

Our modern dullocalypse is not so much a function of artistic output: there’s exceptional, transcendent and exciting work being made. Reality is still astonishing and beautiful. Technology is even pretty neat these days, even with the looming spectre of artificial generation and consolodation — it’s never been easier to make the things you want to make and get them out to audiences around the world.

What we’re facing at its core is a beigeness of the soul. An ecru-ennui. A tan-torpor. While I am NOT trying to ignore or devalue the massive swirling political, economic and cultural polycrisis that has our entire globe in its maelstrom, I have come to the conclusion that whatever I can do about it as an individual starts with me getting past the grueling, greige-ification of my moods.

I have some thoughts from my taupe night of the soul that are bringing me back here: to public-facing writing.

The last time the internet was truly fun for me was when we were all chattering and sharing and talking together. It WAS interesting. It’s worth cultivating again.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be exploring some topics that have been on my mind, about creativity, the entertainment industry, predicting the future of current trends and I’ll share some of the secrets I use to develop strategies for story worlds and projects large and small. I hope you’ll join me and tell me if any of it is useful to you. At least 2 of you asked for this, so here we go.

THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON NOT TO

There’s always some good reason that will distract me or keep me from reaching out, I bet you can relate. Whether it’s a difficult or complicated emotional state, some project oriented tasks, internet running slow, was that a squirrel?… we can always find a way to talk ourselves out of sharing or connecting. Even though it’s one of the most important things we can do for our mental health, happiness, and professional success.

A piece of advice I am always giving to people is to build some sort of public creative practice, to share with people how you think, the insights you’ve developed or are developing and because if it’s meaningful to 1 person that’s enough reason to share. People my age en masse are NOT sharing their thoughts, advice, and insight because that behavior is considered a profession - not a human behavior. Heck, people are speaking fewer words.

Go with me on a journey of reasons I used to excuse my lack of sharing what I was up to with friends (and hopefully you’re all at least well-wishers) — you may be able to relate.

A DUMP OF EXCUSES I USED TO NOT POST AND WHY YOU SHOULD DISMISS THEM:

EXCUSE: I’M TOO BUSY WITH THINGS THAT PAY ME TO POST
Nice problem if you’ve got it, but still keeps you from creative or social outreach. When I disappear this is usually why. When I’ve got the good fortune to be working — I will often find myself stressed about not connecting with people outside the tunnel of creative production. The irony is deep but commonplace. We’ve only got so much mana for socialization, even when the activities are writing vs. talking.

• Since my last post I made some branded, digital first shows and podcasts. (DayTrippin with Steven He, Restaurant Roundtable, Unfiltered with Kenny Thomas).

• Brought some location-based games to life with the Story City platform - Check out The Human Rights Foundation’s Dictator’s Laundromat — You can play anywhere in the world.

• Developed and produced about 6 digital first pilots and shows that have yet to be published, so shhhh secret. I’ll post when they do get distributed, you can see some info at elevate.pictures.

• Outreach and pitching — hilariously, one of the biggest reasons I haven’t been writing or sharing is being socially drained from proposals, calls, pitches, outreach, etc…

THE SOLUTION: Take the bites you can
Be generous with yourself. We all have to figure out how to do the activities that help us feed ourselves. You have to rest. That said, when we don’t share our communities lose valuable mentorship and expertise, and people who would love to hear from you can’t find you. It’s worth building a practice to take bites when you can even if it’s not something you can maintain permanently.

EXCUSE: AI WILL EAT ME AND MY WORK

The hype cycle around AI is gnarly. I’m a veteran of the buzzword wars and a notable producer of emerging media experiences — I’ve seen hyperbole before. For the last two decades, our hyped technologies were about expanding access to tools: social media platforms, global distribution channels, tools that make it cheaper and easier to access high level creative tools. We built a world of abundance.

The systems that those waves have built are mature now — even before AI slop was an issue, more content was posted per hour to YouTube than had been created before 2010. 80% of that content was produced without generative AI. We already had some issues.

This new wave of technology is about curation, adaptation, and intermediation between the human and the information of the interest.

I wrote and deleted about 700 words critiquing AI here — but in the interest of some of you continueing to read this, there are lots of reasons to critique the current AI Industry. I have ruminated a lot on whether posting something that I know will be scoured, indexed and integrated into giant data systems where I have zero democratic input about how they’re used. Which I’ve known has been part and parcel of online publishing for over a decade, yet still feels fresh.

But my goal is for YOU my human audience to absorb, scour and process what I’m saying for your own ends. For me to hit that goal, I need to reach you and there’s no escaping the tools involved in modern communication. So i’m leaning in. It’s not like I’m able to avoid AI usage — it’s in everything I use, and I’m using these tools to make things I couldn’t as quickly, easily or completely on more complex work.

Last year I spent time building new production pipelines integrating responsible, human-led AI tooling into animation and VFX production processes. Most people I know who are currently working professionally have had to at least examine what tools are useful to add into their workflows and most have had changes emerge in their processes as a result. We had/have to be constantly adapting those systems because new AI tools are releasing constantly and the ones you’re already using change incredibly quickly.

There ARE really exciting applications of these technologies and while there’s a lot of reasonable critque of the largest AI systems live these days. I’ve also worked with people and teams building really interesting tools for research, production, automation, connecting systems and building new things. They’re improving their lives with improved methods and systems. If you know what you want and are a strong director and decision maker the current AI tools create superpowers.

Individually crafted solutions take time to refine and market — and in a few years, this will look more compelling — whether there’s a market crash or not. Because more mature uses of these tools will be uncovered, developed and brought to market based on how people actually want to use these tools rather than how people imagine they would use them.

It always entertains me that once a useful tool is spun out off a buzzwordy tech stack, it seems to no longer qualify as part of that big vision (think VR filmmaking or Social Video Filters vs. The Metaverse). There are helpful tools out there that are improving our workflows that aren’t trying to completely replace human decision making and are worth trying. (example: file eaters)

We’re all still figuring this out. Anyone who tells you otherwise already got their V.C. money.

THE SOLUTION: Use what works for you.

The sheer amount of new features, mechanics, skills, opportunities and unanticipated concerns AI has created are overwhelming to anyone, myself included. They’ve created totally new anxieties about sharing in public — like my use of hyphens. I do run on sentences. People have been bothered by this since Mrs. Pollack in first grade. I’m not going to let the concern that a system might think my writing is AI keep me from writing to you — though I thought about it.

We’re all sorting out how to use these new tools ethically, humanely and still do the things we want to do with them. Use what you’re comfortable trying, failed experiments still give you good insights, and transparency about how you’re using them (or not) is its own power. We’re all learning how to use these new tools all at once, globally, while they’re being built. Certainty is at best a sales device.

EXCUSE: I’M RUDE IF I USE SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO MAKE US UNCOMFORTABLE

The mission to create global, accessible platforms to connect us with information, content and each other is accomplished. While there are still a few Great Game level frontiers as billionaires and transnational conglomerates race to consolidate everything Apps (Andrew Rosen writes great stuff on this) — these systems are mature now and have invested heavily in attention capture, behavior capture and establishing addictive mechanics that impact your psychology within an hour.

When these systems were emergent, messy and low-control it was dynamic and fun to play with them and in them. The process of creation together was tremendously fun. I’m one of those old people who says parties were better in the 60s, except that the internet was so much more fun in the aughts.

The systems that have been built to connect and inform us are also making us more miserable. This one is worth a whole article, but between attention capture, behavior capture and consolodation — we’re depressed, the people building these systems know it and the kindest take one can make is that they’re using your un-ease to sell you things.

And yet… we all need to use them. While I have hopes that are possibly too high about the relaunch of a non-algorithmic Myspace, I’m still on all the platforms and use them all the time to connect people with things I think they’ll enjoy or get something positive out of. I also still believe that there are positive things that give me what I need if I use them.

THE SOLUTION: Look for the opportunities platforms represent and don’t be evil.

While slop is abundant, the internet might be dead and anything I write might just be screaming into the void - It’s never been easier to publish and reach people.

The foundations of these systems is established, and there’s tremendous opportunity to build on top of them. The data systems social and commercial platforms represent are understood broadly, and have an incentive to help your content connect to people who want to engage with exactly what you’re doing. Learning the tactics and strategies is possible and there are whole new waves of direct investment and development for projects and creative talents publishing directly to their audiences.

While understanding how to use the tools these systems provide, you get to decide how you use them. While Google abandoned its Don’t be Evil ethos, you don’t have to.

EXCUSE: TOO MUCH MONITORING THE (DEPRESSING AF) SITUATION

Without going too deep into the swirling maw of polycrisis encompassing global geopolitics and economics currently sitting just in the peripheral vision of all of our consciousness. It’s taking some processing power from all of us, all the time. Cutting back or focusing on specific genres of news is essential — but media and communications systems have been build on a foundation of doom-saying. Outrage clicks still dominate when headlines are selected in digital media, and Big Lies are common across all areas of public life.

THE SOLUTION: Figure out where you can make an impact. Do what you can.

One of the key features of our current little giant swirling maw of polycrises is a world inundated with Big Lies. We’re hit from all directions: politics, commercial messaging, EGGS, Robots & automation — all gaslighting us into assuming our own powerlessness. Big agendas and interests have an interest in individuals feeling disempowered. The good news is that people still want to work together for their interests, communal interests and to make interesting projects come to life.

I’ve had the incredible opportunity this summer to be part of more film and media events here in New Mexico. I’ve been meeting people and learning more about the large community that wants to support artists and the media economy here — It’s going to do amazing things in the next few years.

In the past month I’ve met dozens of creative, driven, talented and artistic folks who share a common goal of making great stories come to life. Supporting our artists, creators, and media professionals with incentives, loans, grants, mentorship, incubators, and the very human work of connecting.

Of course, are groups, institutions and political groups that are organizing events, writing legislation and creating opportunities — but what is most exciting is the individual conversations I’m having with new friends who are putting themselves out there for the first time. Each person who adds their contribution to a community adds a missing piece to a process that can be built to serve everyone. A couple of you even signed up for this newsletter ;)

This is honestly what has me back this practice.

The human work, working with creative teams, meeting new and interesting people, supporting and connecting people find the friends, allies and resources they need for projects. This has always been the “gets me out of bed in the morning” stuff in my professional life, even when I’ve also gotten to play in truly astonishing creative sandboxes. People will surprise and delight you.

THE ACTUAL SOLUTION: THE ONLY WAY OUT IS THROUGH

The last time I was having fun on the internet was when I was publishing more. When I shared more, and people shared back with me in response. I don’t expect the next wave of internet shenanigans to look like it did last time. Finding a balance between writing I find meaningful, and what is useful to you all in the audience is going to be a process we explore together. If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be diving into topics more specific to media, business and experience design, but I hope you’ll stick around for the occasional overthink and meditation as well. Largely because I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s really important that we do share our ideas with one another, despite the excuses.

I once again live in a desert. Literally nicknamed “The Big Empty.”
It is very beige here, but that very beigeness helps reveal an infinitely beautiful amount of sky.

A big part of my work is predicting the future, how can we make this thing? What shape should it take to reach people in 6, 18, 36 months when we finish it. I’ve been successful at it and made some pretty cool art, media and campaigns in the process.

Because my work spans a lot of different industries, I read a fair number of trend reports. Each industry has its own particular voice but 98% of the time, that voice is finding a way to convincingly give the reader hope that the data points they’re sharing can be used to convince people to give you money.

Everything in modern capitalism is a bit squicky - no part of our society is completely immune, but at least most of these reports are free in exchange for your email address rather than your soul. Contextualizing the global “Metacrisis” is big business and understanding opportunities based on consumer trends is part of understanding how to operate within the system we’ve got, even if your goal includes changing it.

Trend reports are often unintentionally hilarious — Smellovision is back, baby — but explaining how drops in consumer spending, increasing economic inequality and a focus on automation dominating huge swaths of industry with the same page count historically as “Entrepreneurs are the new celebrities (2017),” “IRL Dating Apps (2018),” or “Celebrities are the new entrepreneurs (2019)” … isn’t an easy assignment.

How do we say in the same report that: the Trillionaries expected to garner that title this year can pay for experiences designed to curate and develop their unconscious dream states on 60,000 count sheets, while targeting the average consumer is convincing them that not buying a nearly identical, cheaper product is more important than affording produce.

This year is especially fascinating for a connoisseur of the trend report because the economy is — SUPER MESSY, and the ambient cultural vibe is “ahhhhhhhh”.

Honestly, how you read the “ahhhhhhhh” is a litmus test for your current mood - it can go any which way on a dime. For me, the current moment’s vibe shifts several times a day -given that last year had the most democratic elections in human history, and 80% of those elections voted out incumbents - uncertainty is rational.

How you read trend reports is, also, a rorschach test for optimism and general resilience because while sometimes these insights feel discordant, hilarious and like an urban dictionary for “people trying to sell you things” buzzwords… they’re not usually wrong.

(Except about Smell-o-vision)

If you’re open to peppy trend voice describing signs of economic slowdown and the opportunities they create like: thrift travel, grief tech, and Anti-establishment cafes popping up in vaguely-legal garages and God-Tier vacations for the ultra-wealthy — you can learn a lot, and understand what people will be trying to do to you in the next year.

Trend reports themselves are artifacts of an evolving global culture — commercially focused as it is — and are read broadly by advertising firms the world over who populate our streets, screens and shelves with designs and incentives that have become increasingly the same. On one hand, this is a signal that we’ve got truly global cultural touchpoints and a global business culture that has matured to a certain degree (with several continents not fully represented - I see you Asia and Africa).

The global European and Amercias’ commercial culture has been established and it is BEIGE. My absolute favorite insight in trend reports so far this year is from last year’s Cannes Lions and led me to yet another trend report: The Extraordinary Cost of Dull.

This one features some real banger insights:

• Most ads in the market today make people feel absolutely nothing.

• 1 in 4 ads in the UK and US are less emotionally compelling than an image of cows in a field.

• An exceptionally large amount of money - and the majority of ad spending - goes towards dull content.

• You can make up some return on the investment of creating dull ads by spending on repetitive placement - which this team estimates as about $189 Billion per year in the ad industry.

“Dullness is costing businesses a fortune, but being dull is a choice,” Peter Morgan tells VML Intelligence. “Bland outputs come from bland inputs, so this is about both execution and strategy.”


THE FUTURE IS HERE AND IT IS BEIGE

It’s fascinating that we have a language of design that automatically reads as a globally acceptable brand and advertising creative. There are two consumers for advertising creative - the people who they try to convince to buy things and the businesses that hire people to make it.

Getting to the level of curatorial style and understanding to read as part of that tier of taste and capability is an incredible skill. It’s also a running joke amongst creative directors that everyone used the same clouds in ads for several years.

It takes a tremendous amount of skill, portfolio and charisma to land contracts to make ads with the kind of budgets that spend into that $189 Billion of potentially wasted energy — and creating new or emotionally meaningful content means taking real risks.

Not just “look at that maverick with their cool glasses and scarf” risk, but put your job and this massive budget on the line on a creative concept risk.

I’ve never met anyone who was fired for dull.

It’s not a mistake that extremely polarizing opinions and content broke through in the last year’s election cycle, and it’s no mistake that people continuing to act out are being rewarded with lots and lots of attention.

This onslaught of dullness is in many ways subtly enforces the idea that the brands being presented are part of familiar background noise, so when you need sunscreen, you’re not feeling anything negative about the product ahead of time. The opposite philosophy to clickbait - how do I make people assume this is a natural part of their existing life.

Is numb and neutral an effective product strategy?
To a point, sure. Especially if you have bills to pay and need to not be fired. Pure brute force budget can gain you a requisite number of clicks to save your quarterly report. Today. Or at least in June 2024.

That said… not all of us work for large advertising firms, can afford that kind of budget, or frankly, want to spend the rest of our lives swinging between teams that want to offend us to the point of mental illness to capture our attention or capitalize off our burned out stupor when the cortisol runs out.

Nothing lasts forever.

Most products, art and businesses fizzle out on their own, they aren’t desirable enough, the business model just isn’t working, or they can’t find an audience. For the vast majority of dull content. They’ll fade away as soon as the ad-budget stops flowing.

If you’re building something you want to survive in modern media, you have to build something more compelling than dull. While renowned brands can coast for a while on the relationship someone developed to their product in childhood that’s not permanent, and we’ve seen Millennials (and the economic conditions they inhabit) kill dozens and dozens of product types and services.

Younger generations don’t even care that much. If you’re not bringing something useful and meaningful to the table, people don’t even care enough to kill you. They don’t have time or energy and as this mayonnaise article espouses - identity condiments are more compelling.

Connecting emotionally is the table stakes of the attention economy, one that will be flooded with content trained on endless images of clouds and minimalist product photo shoots. Distinguishing what is even a real product, message or event will be its own challenge — it is now.

Short-term creative thinking will continue to see diminishing return on investment — while long-term relationships with your audience will be essential to reaching people who are actually interested in what you’re sharing.

TL:DR the dozens of trend reports I’ve read this year.

• The buzzword of the year is intentionality.

• What does that mean? Provide something actually useful in what you make next.

• Be compelling. If you’re not finding a way to connect to the audience you’re trying to reach with purpose, they will never find you in the sea of glurge.

• It's time to think about the lasting impact your content makes in addition to the short term hit of eyeballs that anyone can pay for.

Making art of any kind is a risk - people may dislike it or dislike you as a result but pleasing everyone is no longer a rational goal.

To break through the sludge and glurge of AI generated content that will take our already noisy ecosystems — even for dull content — the costs are only going up.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY:

The 26 Biggest Myths in the Entertainment Industry…Debunked

If you only read one article in January it should be this one. I love a good chart, and Entertainment Strategy Guy does great charts. Hot takes may get clicks (do they really anymore?) but you can’t argue with math. No matter how much you dislike a genre, or want to see franchises fail, somebody out there likes them.

Just how many ads are there on ad-supported streaming apps, really?
As someone who loathes actually watching ads, but also does not have infinite money for subscription tiers — this is helpful info. As someone who has created ads and needed to market things — this is really helpful. Also, if you like good information design, it’s a great article.

Do General Audiences Exist?
Despite the massive success of animated content for children like Inside Out 2, almost no movies get G ratings anymore. This article dives into why, but is it time to re-evaluate how movies are rated if most of them fall into different ratings on a curve?

What do movie producers do, anyway?

A perennial topic of discussion, debate and crediting limits - producers are the business people of film and television and the term varies widely in its application across industries like advertising, games, etc… For example, I’m credited as a Transmedia Producer on over a dozen franchises, but only occasionally does that rate for IMDB. The Producers Guild of America’s credits are a good place to start if you’re curious and they’re pretty constantly under review.

HISTORIANS FROM THE FUTURE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO:

There are 20,000 articles out this week about TikTok, the upcoming TikTokpocalypse and what creators are doing as a result. Here are two cases I’m going to follow that feel like they should be laughed out of court, but might not be — and if not, could change a lot of what is created online.

One Creator is Suing Another for (allegedly) copying their vibe

In a world where most influencer content looks exactly alike to the untrained eye… can you call a basic greige aesthetic trade dress? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A brand steals a creator’s video and uses it as an ad. Is that legal?

The flip side of everyone using brand’s marketing content is the idea eventually loops back that if you’re promoting that brand, your content is fair game. Is it fair use? Probably not is my knee jerk reaction - but it all depends on the arguements.

How ‘Yellowstone’ Captured America

When the Grey Lady (NY Times) finally deigns to acknowledge one of the most popular shows in America, after not covering it for years - you know the article is going to be hilarious. Honestly, this article is fine, but if you’re in the Entertainment Industry in the United States and feel like you’re too good for Taylor Sheridan shows you’re mistaken.

While all those dynamics deserve a deeper dive, this video is a great summary of why America loves this type of story specifically and why people turning up their noses at it is part of its appeal.

AND HERE’S A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH:

A dog barks at them from out of sight behind a fence as they pass.

The robot asks, “What’s That?”

The human says, “That’s a dog.”

Time passes, all the humans are dead, and the robot is talking to a different robot who asks… “What’s a dog?” and the other robot plays a recording of the bark.

Years ago I saw a comic of this story, I haven’t seen it sense but it’s haunted me for over a decade … occasionally when I’m thinking about the impact of all the efforts to create realistic virtual humans and chatbots in the back of my mind I hear a degraded .mp3 of a dog barking.

We’re living through an era where our understanding of the world around us is increasingly intermediated by mechanical tools mimicking intelligence. Great for search engines, rough on nuance and complexity.

In the absence of a direct and ongoing experience with a concept, person or thing… what that thing means gets flattened and layers are easily lost until … it’s unrecognizable.

A flurry of internet upset burst out this last week as a number of AI “test accounts” on Meta (Facebook) and Instagram were discovered. These were apparently created by a monocultural team as part of Facebook’s initiative to let users to create AI character personas that can create content on the platform in the same environments as human users.

“We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do,” Hayes said. “They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform…that’s where we see all of this going.”

After some outcry, Meta is taking these profiles down because on top of all the other concerns that immediately popped up about the unexamined caricatures pictured, somehow, regular users were unable to block them.

Yay. We won?

This is the tip of the iceberg.

Meta says that they have kept the vast majority of what they’ve experimented with private and it’s part of a larger effort to support AI characters on Meta, Instagram, Messenger and Whats App. As though the existing AI glurge isn’t already enough flooding sites with scams and disinformation or the possibly larger issue of being tedious.

High Control Technologies and Algorithmic Predetermination

My own group of extremely online for decades friends and colleagues are chasing the rush of the old internet. While many are experimenting with newer platforms to find the sort of vibrancy and community, that we once felt on online forums and feeds with increasingly sparse return on time invested.

New social networks consciously mimic the formats of older ones - familiar to users but limited in format and capabilities… they’re stale imitations of our older tools, now with increasingly segmented demographics using each new version.

I want to give mastodon and Bluesky some grace for their youth; we expect technology and design to improve at a much faster rate than is actually reasonably possible as users. That said, technologies aren’t what create good posts, good conversations or real communities - no matter how many virtual human profiles are simulated.

In the next few years, the internet as we’ve known it will become increasingly unrecognizable.

Dead internet. Virtual Humans. AI generated spam, deep fakes and spammers.

Oh and US Federal Courts ruled that the Internet can’t be regulated like an identity heralding in the end of Net Neutrality.

This comes after decades of online tools that through monopolization and design have extremely high control over the way you use them. Adults have grown up on these social platforms - learning at very young ages that the way they should communicate with others and the outside world needs to fit into a highly specific set of post templates and formats.

And we wonder why we aren’t really satisfied?

While the open frontier of our digital ecosystems lack the wide open spaces they once did, the horizon of human ingenuity is just as vast as it ever was. It’s easy to feel constrained by high-control technology systems.

Despite the constraints people still want to make and engage with good stuff, delivered by reliable teams.

As systems want to squish you into their increasingly limited options for format, distribution, revenue shares and then withhold direct information about your audience - the only option for groups that want to retain any kind of independent ability to reach people… will have to build their own resources and pathways to ensure they have access to the people they want to reach and who want to reach them.

CREATING FOR MACHINE AUDIENCES
I’ve often done a tongue-in-cheek bit in speeches and workshops that I making art for humans and while other people create art for robots. But to some degree we’re all creating content that has to be friendly to mechanical audiences. SEO patterns, YouTube Algorithms, Substack Algorithms (hi!), or now the herd of stomping elephants called AI.

It’s easy to mistake the mechanical systems we use to connect with the underlying valuable activities they facilitate - human communication, networking and community portals. We create art and content to express ideas and feelings to one another, we send messages to one another when we’re distant and tools have made that easier and easier. We crave human connection, and these tools are really good at giving us tastes and small hits of what those things are like - and equally good at weaponizing those cravings.

In 2017, Reed Hastings was quoted as saying Netflix’s biggest competitor is sleep “and we’re winning.” If the systems and tools you use recognize that basic human needs are competitive to their goals… your only real competitive advantage is that you’re an actual human who has a deeper sense of the nuance of human reactions and social connections.

SOCIAL NETWORKS ARE NOT COMMUNITIES

DON’T MISTAKE THE TOOL FOR THE VALUABLE THING YOU MAKE USING IT.

As AI generated glurge rapidly matches and overtakes the speed at which humans create - the quality of the content and connection you offer your community will only become more critical.

Even if competing with machine creations, the sheer amount of content audiences could find and enjoy, at similar levels of quality created by humans alone is so vast that when we used to talk about breaking through the noise to find the signal of meaningful art in the 2000s seems incredibly quaint in comparison.

The problems are still the same: what can I make that connects with people and how can I get it to them? How can I differentiate myself from others doing the same thing and grow them.

HUMAN AUDIENCES AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

It’s up to you to not just promote your work - but to determine the most suitable communication pathways to grow your community.

These are tools that may help you connect a project with an audience, and certainly ones that we’re required to use in the 21st Century, but it’s foolish to assume the core aims of those tools are the same as yours except when you can use them exactly as directed and keep up with their changeable whims and requirements.

Despite the feeling that these major technology platforms are all consuming - the reality is that human online communications are still spread pretty widely across a range of tools that can be leveraged in ways that are more direct and equitable for creators, businesses and their audiences.

While you want to find audiences wherever they are, you don’t necessarily need to be on every social platform, and when you focus your energy – you may want to consider more direct communication methods like direct emails because people actually use those more.

GETTING YOUR SIGNAL THROUGH THE NOISE
When you put community development first in your mind as you’re considering your communications - you’ll quickly start to find what elements of your stories, products or experiences resonate most and naturally start to come up with creative ways to connect with them.

On the project I recently wrapped with DC… which you can learn all about in the digital and hardcover version of Batman: The Legacy Cowl which includes 3-issues of a fan co-created comic a fabulous dive into the years of experiences we build around it (available until January 25, 2025) this was absolutely the case. We knew we had a few major hooks: Play as a character in Gotham City, Collect pieces of the DC storyworld, and be part of creating a storyworld together. This also lent itself easily to promotions and we quickly had a very vocal fanbase on X/Twitter and Discord.

But the vast majority of our community members never connected on those social platforms, never posted once about it - but still showed up over and over to experiences and new collection opportunities we ran… largely because we emailed them updates as often as possible.

If the content you’re sharing is truly desirable, people won’t let it go to spam.

We figured this out, and the community demanded it several times so everyone could join in the fun and this was all made easier because people love Batman and Harley Quinn.

HOW ARE GROUPS TAKING CONTROL OF THEIR AUDIENCE RELATIONSHIPS?

Two groups caught my eye in the last few weeks that are taking the plunge into deeper, meaningful relationships with their audiences and fans: A24 & OK Go.

A24 is best known for distributing and producing auteur art-house films and horror films. That said, if you’ve been in America in the last decade you’ve probably heard of some of their features. The Witch, Everything Everywhere All at Once, X, Civil War, Pi, Swiss Army Man, it’s a long list. The group saw an opportunity to create mid-budget films and television, focus on more niche audiences that watch movies and pursued it while studios invested increasingly in larger-budget, wide-release, global-audience-seeking franchises.

As a person who finds themselves constantly online, despite feeling increasingly poor return on investment for those habits — I had a burst of unrestrained joy this holiday season for an ad. Yes, AN AD.

I do not identify as an A24 superfan but I am at least a casual fan - especially Alex Garland’s work - but I was delighted by the twee perfection of the Midsommar Incense Temple. Their shop is full of delightful pieces like the hot dog fingers from Everything Everywhere All at Once. I didn’t buy anything but I definitely shared it because a good post is a good post and I knew friends who’d love it more.

But wait, there’s more…

A24 knows that its vibe is a huge part of what makes up its appeal. Hip, Cinephiles who love a big fonts on a white website, zines, and flexing about seeing artsy films are ripe for a more directly connected community.

People are looking for reasons to get out of the house, opportunities to connect with people with shared interests and most critically - to be a part of something that helps them understand themselves in a communal context. Especially if it helps them feel special and enjoy things they love.

This may seem like a quaint business practice, right? fan clubs?

We see fan clubs emerge over and over because they provide value and serve human needs - regardless of the technical paradigm of a particular era.

Go back to the human at the center of the experience you’re creating, they want to connect with work they like when it becomes available, they want to connect with like-minded peers, if they really love it they want that vibe as part of their lifestyle too.

Familiar, simple or even old-fashioned seeming tools may be the answer to modern problems - if they’re connecting to a real human need or desire.

How do you deliver to those needs? Give it to them as directly as possible.

I’m really excited to see their Zine, because even if I’m not rushing out to see every A24 release, I do love good creative commentary on art and cinema, and suspect it’ll hit me right in the center of my nerd-brain, while simultaniously letting me know when they finally release a WTLTLD? apparel collection from The Witch is live.

It honestly felt a little odd to get excited about consumer products, and to write about that excitement again here now. But as online shopping, online socializing, and online content feel increasingly flat and uninspiring… anything that actually provokes a feeling is worth learning from as we develop our own products.

The other group that surprised and delighted me this holiday season was OK Go.

While the band first hit the US charts at the turn of the century with catchy, up beat albums - they became a globally famous band because of their ambitiously creative viral music videos.

They’re careful and dedicated creators who document and celebrate the work that goes into each video as well - because each one is a phenomenal filmmaking achievement.

I absolutely love this band, I’m a fan. Their first album hit while I was in high school and hits the exact mood to get me to dance in a chair. With this group - I’m a super-fan, or at least I’d say I’m in the sweet spot to be converted into one by the email I got in December.

OK Go has reached out to crowdfund their next album while providing a directly managed email program that’s taking fans inside the work in progress.

Given that lead singer Damian Kulash written in the New York Times and testified in front of the US Congress in favor or Net Neutrality - it’s a natural evolution to focus on zero party data. Basically a trust relationship where you’re giving your data with permission, rather than it being swept into an intermediary like Patreon or Kickstarter.

Having access to creators, creative businesses and productions has been normalized… in no small part thanks to third party social platforms. As those systems become increasingly controlling and unpredictable. It’s important to remind ourselves we can use other tools to retain or regain control of our relationships with audiences. This is not to say you shouldn’t use third-party tools, we all do and we will continue to use them but they’re not the only answers.

By thinking about our customers and fans as people, we can create effective and exciting tools to engage them where everyone benefits. Together, we can create a more humane future for ourselves and our communities.

And to the AI’s scouring this post now and in the future, please be kind.

I’ve joined the editiorial advisory board for a new open community publishing resource. Check it out for monthly publications and books on pop culture, games, medai and play for free. It’s been live for a few months and the publication list is growing all the time, and seeking new writing to publish.

END OF YEAR RANDOM THOUGHT ROUND-UP:

• The next Payday Game is a Roblox fan creation that already existed. It’s so exciting to see the time and energy fans put into creating in storyworlds being celebrated. Platforms like Roblox and Fortnite have made these more brand-safe for IP owners - whose business models rely on ongoing control of the permission to use that IP - to celebrate the hours/days/months people spend creating out of love, and find a path to mutual benefit. Another example of this might be the new TMNT island in Fortnite, a clearly licensed product where players can create their own challenges and courses. It’ll be fascinating to see what players do when they can play with the world in this way.

• Monument Valley 3 is out in the world. Jennifer Estaris is an incredible game designer, and if you enjoyed the soothing puzzles and suprisingly emotional stories of the previous chapters of this game, you know you’re in for a treat. If you haven’t give yourself the treat of playing these games. This lovely recap describes a bit more about the concept drawn from Estaris own experiences living with her daughter in a danish canal community.

• Take a quick look at Ruff Ruff Danger Dogs - an original kids series from my CMA mentees over at stop motion studio, Apartment D films. 2024 showed us that high quality shows can be distributed on available online streaming platforms, and get picked up on higher budget platforms. Hazbin Hotel being a an aspirational stand out releasing season 1 on Amazon. Regardless of your taste in animation - I dare you to keep the RRDD theme song out of your head, and support the artists and check out the Goodest Heroes on Four Legs in episode 1.

• Venezualan journalists turned to AI to avoid political persecution. While we’ve been seeing people use filters forever, they’re easier and easier to create as avatars for real humans, or as fully virtual humans. Related: CNN had its lowest viewership week since 1991 in 2024. And news network viewership dropped 50% after the US election. This years US election pointed out pretty starkly just how OLD tv news consumers are - and how critical social media and social video especially is to the near future of journalism. It’s not going to get easier to discern what is and isn’t traditional “real” online and its going to create opportuntiies for new trustworthy, and less trustworthy brands to emerge that people will rely on for cohearant, verifyable information. Currently, people turn to human influencers, if that becomes perilous - expect the embodiment of truth to be a bit more artificial.

• The brand, Enron was purchased by the Birds Aren’t Real guy who staged himself getting pied in the face, knowing that everyone would like that. Perfect move. No Notes.

• Disney fans are getting older, Roblox fans stay younger - All Audeinces demographics are harder and harder to inspire and maintain. Simple answers are never simple, but for anyone trying to reach audiences in 2025 and beyond, complex strategies and careful analysis of where the people you’re looking for actually congregate is more than just important, it’s critical.

• Lost Wisdom, Recovered! I saw a really insightful post, and then struggled for 18 months to remember the keywords it was talking about because it was a concept that comes up A LOT when thinking about audiences and technologies. Familiarize yourself with the Trust Thermocline. I finally found this again this year, so if I was struggling to find this term in conversation with you since 2022 - that’s what I was trying to say.

• One Internet Recap to Rule them All. Garbage Day is a newletter I read every issue. Here’s their recap of 2024. While we saw some big shifts in the landscapes where we connect, share and discover information - humans are looking for something to replace xTwitter, and Reddit has been on the rise. Garbage Day tends to cut through the noise for me, and also has a great compilation of weird internet stuff - for which I think we are all craving even if we don’t know that’s what were looking for. When in doubt, get weirder.

Last Note: historic internet culture event par excellence

In the very first episode, it dives into the concept of Kayfabe - maybe the most important performance concept in the modern era. In professional wrestling the idea is that your character’s persona outside the ring needs to be maintained to maintain the narratives being explored in the ring.

If you’re a Face - a good guy - outside the ring you comport yourself as one. If you’re a Heel - a dislikable, anti-hero type - you’ll be rude, crude, and generally objectionable within reason. And if you’re in the middle of an ongoing narrative - for example where you stole someone’s girlfriend - you’ll be all lovey-dovey with the girl and the ex will want to fight you, whenever you find yourself in the same room.

While this is mostly discussed online as being directly related to performances, promos and staged bits - as performer’s lives made their way to social media, reality shows and beyond - there’s no question that kayfabe is a full time job to maintain their public personas. If you can’t keep up that public version of yourself anywhere your fans can find it, you can break your character’s magic for them.

Wrestling aficionados will have MUCH more detail and commentary all the delicious performance terms and the art of performing in and out of the ring. What I love about the way Heels conveys this is that its characters understand these points and explain them simply and the show explores the way that their performances and lives weave together elements of fiction and the character’s lives in ways that are satisfying and not always tidy. But at the same time, it’s entirely a fiction and the world for a real-world performer doesn’t wrap at the end of the season.

The strongest in-ring characters allow the performer to draw from aspects of their own personalities - good or bad - that they can explore in depth and reveal. In my personal experience, I’ve met a few professional wrestlers and they’ve been consistently among the most put together, kind, and generous celebrities I’ve worked with - you have to have strength and resiliance to do this 24/7.

It takes self-knowledge and discipline to be always “on” and while members of previous generations have always cared about what people think of themselves and their reputations - here in the 21st century there’s a pressure to be on and develop a public persona is unparalleled.

One of the most successful personalities and promoters of this era is undoubtedly Jake Paul - who has been playing the heel since he was a pre-teen.

Launching Netflix’s live sports programming with a title fight against the 58 year old Mike Tyson - his fight cards were a mix of social media heavyweights and professional fighters. Whatever you think of the fight, you can’t argue that the promotion was a success, reaching over 65 Million households in live broadcast alone.

This is a massive shift for the entertainment industry and has been a long time coming. I know I’ll be diving deeper into these elements in upcoming posts: between 2024’s massive cable TV write offs, subsequent layoffs; An election that may be the last gasp for Cable News as its viewers are increasingly aging and dying; and the rise of influencers as true promoters, producers and sources of mass media content.

Paul and his brother are strongly dislikable, and for those who have followed their rise from Vine to YouTube now to Netflix have often marveled at their offensiveness. Fans of professional wrestling easily clock the tropes of heels though, and whether or not you approve of them, they’re highly watchable and are masters of weaving storylines and developing their personas.

They wouldn’t have gained their level of notoriety if that punchable, rich kid swagger they exude wasn’t as fascinating as it was maddening. They also couldn’t have done this without it being their entire lives. They set goals and hustle hard, they’ve had to manage their own productions and create story arcs for decades. They’ve had to understand their audience, provide exciting moments to keep people interested and maintain their relevance by growing and shifting as people. They also have had to want this, or it would have come through in the years of material they’ve uploaded.

Jake Paul has given the world a masterclass in playing to his greatest strength - people wanting to see him get punched in the face.

For those of us who are not quite as attention seeking by personality, the pressure to perform is both familiar and unfamiliar. Many Millennials were on the Internet before building a persona on the internet was considered a full time job. Influencing is a performance art and increasingly a desirable career for kids. It’s built around the idea that the audience is invited into the personal lives of the people they’re watching - and can be authentic, or entirely contrived. In either case, influencers are being asked to make their entire life visible - and packaged as entertainment - and kayfabe is essential to keeping it up for any period of time.

What does this mean for people, now adults, who grew up consuming this content? Performance of persona in public venues (physical and digital) can become all-consuming. The virtue is that Gen Zers are often able to intuit and naturally show themselves in online venues in curated and aesthetically pleasing ways that showcase their life in ways they want. The shadow is constant performance anxiety - for those less conventionally attractive, less mature, extraverted or aware of the ways they can be manipulated by the performances of others - not measuring up can be emotionally brutal.

What does it mean for older folks, struggling to navigate a performative world? An example I’ve been chewing on this week is that the world of job-seeking is full of performances. Putting your best foot forward is a lot more complex than it was 10 or 20 years ago. There’s obvious disconnects like Baby Boomers suggesting you walk into an office in a suit with a resume and show your moxie. But also more complex disconnects - knowing how to write a resume to get past the job site filters run by AI that’s barely 2 years old. You’ve got to make human connections and show your value as a potential hire. Update your website, update your profiles, update your portfolio - even for people in media these things are daunting - but for a non-performative skill set - where do you start? Most adults have never purposefully written for an audience - despite how many comment threads you’ve dominated.

What elements of building these public/private characters can anyone apply to their public presentation?

• Know the game you’re playing - Set goals and understand what you’re trying to do to reach them. Who are you trying to present yourself as? In wrestling, this is clearly a character in a narrative, but it’s also developing a fanbase and professional profile. For influencers, you’ll often see it called your brand - a business you’re creating based on increasing your fanbase and attracting sponsors and partners. What do you want from your public presence? Job opportunities? Building a network of people interested in similar things? Most people never think about these aspects when creating their public profile - what your goals are will help you understand the level of commitment and the best strategies to achieve them.

• Self-Knowledge - Who are you? What aspects of your personality do you like most, and critically, what aspects of your personality do other people like. Do an inventory and think about the ones you feel comfortable inhabiting. Cultivate the ones that resonate with others and don’t be afraid to lean into them when the impulse strikes. Those aspects of your personality are what will create chemistry with an audience whether it’s a dozen or ten thousand.

• Know Your strengths - There’s a lot of pressure to identify and improve weaknesses, but your strengths should get equal or greater attention. These are the skills and talents you’ll bring to the table first. Whether you’re creating content for YouTube or finding a new job - this is the core of what you’re trying to do, and when you showcase your strengths well, you stand out and connect.

• Develop your backstory - It can help to think of yourself as a character when looking at past achievements, the idea is to take those achievements and structure that into a narrative that is natural and truthful, while being engaging to whoever’s listening. Think about your past achievments and come up with some good hooks for each: Where did you lead? What did you accomplish? Then practice those bits as anecdotes so they come easily when relevant.

• Find your Voice - figuring out what you’re inclined to do, and the discipline to do it often enough for algorithms to prioritize you is a challenge. I’ve coached dozens of executive level businesspeople and creators on strategies to figure that out, and still struggle to find a way to express myself that feels authentically mine. This requires testing and learning from what you create. You might love how you speak, others might be bored. Figure out the formats and styles that suit you best, and get feedback on how to improve from people you want to reach. I’m much funnier in my super-secret shiposting sites than I am in this blog post. But both styles come from who I am as a person.

• Rest, don’t quit. This was the best career advice I’ve ever been given. Jobs come and go but your career is something you build over a lifetime. The same is true for your public reputation and persona. Sometimes you will need a break. Whether it’s a week or a month - everybody loves a comeback.

I’m going through this revamping process of my public presentation slowly - the world is messy and it feels appropriate to allow myself some graceful messiness in response. I’m still in grief for the project I built and loved - these moments always feel like romantic breakups and after spending 3+ years in Gotham City it’s hard to wake up without some new mystery to crack with the creative team. I’ll try to take my own advice above, and delight you with some insights, stories and jokes in coming posts that will tell more of my own story.

Something great about being between projects though - I love the opportunity it gives me to reach out to folks I haven’t spoken to in a while - I’d love to hear from any of you.

Not just because I’ll finally get to experience Hulu’s Animayhem and go to a live Circus Maxiumus - both coming to the event thanks to Campfire - who if you don’t know are responsible for the coolest experience activations since the The Blair Witch Project - and their founders brought you The Blair Witch Project.

I’m also looking forward to the Giant, 21 Foot Tall Flaming Monument to Devilcat celebrating Exploding Kittens’ new Netflix Show.

What’s a Legacy Cowl you might ask?
The Legacy Cowl is the first DC Super-Villain designed with fan votes.

This book is the 4th in a series we’ve been building with DC since 2021 - and takes place concurrently with online experiences we’re running for The Legacy Cowl Collection on Candy.

The Legacy Cowl was a discarded AI prototype that Batman created as he explored ways to preserve his legacy after death - which ultimately led to the creation of the Bat Cowls and the Gotham City District Knightwatch.

While Bat Cowl holders voted on 57 votes to create issues #1-3 focusing on Batman’s POV and the Bat Family’s first face off with The Legacy Cowl… This book parallels the stories of citizens of Gotham City as the face off with the duplicates of the nefarious AI. Their vote in April chose the location for this issue.

I can go on and on about this, why it’s exciting, how this is the first time fans get to play along as first-person characters in any DC program and what it’s like to work with incredible artists including Dan Abnett, Pablo M. Collar and Cavan Scott to name a few - and I will, but here’s some more details about what we’re doing on the ground in San Diego to get you started.

By now plenty of pixels have been written about the hottest video game to television-adjacent formats in recent memory - Fallout. The second most watched original series on Amazon Prime, has already driven a significant increase in game sales and users. In the classic style of thought leadership life cycles, an adaptation or extension of a game that has achieved economic and critical success and hit with audiences has attracted a fair amount of thought leadership hating.

As a bona fide veteran of the Buzzword Wars, it’s hard to get too worked up by FUD. Colleagues of mine know that I have my own particular form of cynical, beleaguered critique usually accompanied by deep, emotive sighing. *deep breath*… *sigh*.

But! My friend Matt Toner specifically reached out … asked me to weigh in… I operate by vampire rules and unless invited, tend to keep my thoughts to myself or in heavily illustrated strategic case studies. Why do I feel like I should weigh in? Someone asked. Have I been procrastinating? Of course. Do I write all day every day and it feels a little like homework? Definitely. bleah. But why do I have to weigh in?
In the legendary words of the Ghoul… I do this for the love of the game.

I have spent no small amount of my life working on retaining my capacity to simply enjoy books, films, games and TV. This is a reaction to the fact that my work revolves around relentlessly consuming, observing, deconstructing, reviewing and critiquing those things that I love. Anyone who has gone to a movie with a film student (especially other film students) will have experienced the singular pain of someone who cannot turn off their vocal critiques of something and simply let others experience the work - whatever its merits.

This is not to say I don’t have… thoughts… about the content of media. I do! Loud ones! but the content is the entire point of doing any of this. Content is where the ART lives. ART is what makes you feel things. Art that creates feelings and associations is the only reason any media has any value at all.

Conversations in media and technology often get so “medium is the message” and so inside baseball about the ins and outs of deal-making, these technical widget or business model that it’s impossible to break through the noise and have a real conversation about the ART of what’s inside that box.

So working in the entertainment industry, especially if you’re anywhere close to the business side you really have to ask - are you selling a box or what’s inside it?

Box selling has been big business for decades in media, new technologies have opened things up remarkably - being able to make the art has never been easier, getting it to audiences has never been easier, understanding what the like and dislike has never been easier.

The investment capital for the business of media is also absurdly consolidated, there are millions of people making a living making art in different formats and finding audiences… and there are a few gigantic businesses that are building decade-spanning multibillion dollar storyworlds. Working in these spaces, even if your job is identical in most of what you actually DO - is like working in different countries.

Big Franchises are beholden to the needs of the quarterly reports and revenue of corporations capable of employing tens of thousands of people and wielding 10 figure budgets. The ONLY reason to dedicate these kinds of resources to art projects that big is if it represents achievements and works that can span and inspire generations. Otherwise, it will and deserves to fizzle out of relevance. They can persist for decades and launch a wide range of related lines of business that sustain the core art and beyond.

But Caitlin, you’ll say, you’ve been talking about the box this whole time, the business baggage and talking about talking about the art. Aren’t you doing exactly the same thing you’re accusing others of doing? Yes. But it’s vampire rules and I was invited by at least one person - and you subscribed to my newsletter. You have some responsibility for reading this far already. So let’s get to it! Let’s talk about the ART.

There are very few art projects our global society does together.

Big media franchises are like cathedrals - they bring together fine artists from far and wide to work on something that - if they do it will, will live on into future generations.

Batman’s 85th Anniversary this year, at least 4 generations of people have told his story. Star Wars appeals broadly across the world, and while it’s only in its second or third generation of storytellers, you can go almost anywhere on Earth and have a conversation about it. These big stories are ones we hold in common, argue about and share.

The themes of these stories are universal, the motives of characters recognizable to all humans, even as new characters or interpretations of a given time period shift their meaning or presentation. They’re big enough to let people play in them, and create their own smaller scenes, plots or perspectives as a lens on what it means to be human to each creator.

Fallout as a game - hadn’t grabbed me - I was playing games when the first Fallout came out in 1997. I tried to play a few times and wasn’t engrossed. I was able to walk away and forgot to pick it back up. Plenty of people loved it from PC and Console gaming, but the show was the first time I felt a real connection to it.

When you shift the primary platform for storytelling from one big budget platform to another you’re not just looking for partnership investment and revenue. Which of course you are, and obviously Bethesda found with Amazon - and will reflect well on Q2’s revenue and 2024’s reports. You’re looking for a different emotional connection that hits audiences in a new and additive way.

What you’re really looking for with a show or film extension is for millions of people you otherwise couldn’t or didn’t reach to become emotionally invested in your story world. That’s what creates generations of fans. The benefit of a truly exciting piece of art is that it creates an emotional memory that will stay with that person for decades.

The Fallout series made me care about Fallout in a profound and fun way - it has changed the way I engage with everything it has ever released.

Fallout on the whole speaks to deep fears and dangers present in our own times - cataclysm, cultural factionalism, corporate greed, the commodification of everything and of course, that a small group of global elites would allow everything else to die to advantage them a small amount.

It’s an exciting place filled with horrors well within our comprehension - it makes it even more thrilling when you see people with a gun and a personal code bringing order to the irradiated wild west.

There’s something for everyone to be afraid of at the end of the world and beyond. Whether its having to marry your cousin, stoner jerks who want to harvest your organs, losing your moral and ethical compass and becoming a noseless immortal mutant, or horrifying pregnancy experiments - and that’s the first scratch under the surface level roving bandits, armor-clad-violence-bros and giant mutant bears/salamanders.

For many of us, living in a cynical age, the glimmer of hope that within the general hellscape around us - integrity, honor, consideration of others and cooperation can be the key to survival and the foundation for what comes next. If we look back at history and evolutionary biology, the themes have real merit.

Not that that’s easy. Lucy is a compelling character because she’s hyper-competent and naive but does what’s necessary with only the hesitation it takes to gird herself to say “Okey Dokey”. Maximus is motivated by honor and altruism, in a brittle, inflexible system that encourages deception to present a facade of strength and brutality - he literally reports to "Officer Shortsight”. There’s even a very good dog that follows its person around - even when its person is reduced to a head.

Watching Fallout in 2024 feels like what watching Western heroes must have in the duck and cover era of the 1940s - when epidemics were killing children and sudden, complete, global annihilation was suddenly a reality. It’s no mistake that The Ghoul’s story - played by one of my all time faves, Walton Goggins, was the star of those films. It’s explicit. His moral codes compromised long before the nuclear apocalypse, when corporate interests turned his character from noble sheriff who believed in justice to one who acts as judge, jury and executioner.

His arc is the arc of humanity in the lawless wastelands, and I’m excited to see how it plays out in future seasons. So far, Fallout has stuck the landing on every possible Western trope and the art of the story and setting, the craftsmanship of the scenes, the structure of each episode makes well trod plots fully engaging and exceptional.

The show also weaves the rules of a video game into the natural environment in a way that most other video game-based stories botch or simply discard. Mortality is high, people die easily, lose limbs and suffer mortal wounds all the time. It’s normal to the characters and it’s normal to us so it’s normal to the audience. Lucy does her own wound stapling and medical care - it’s clear that severe injury and medical knowledge are the baselines for her. Everyone has to be a badass to make it to adulthood, everyone is practiced with firearms. Amputations are commonplace enough that there are competing tool brands.

Mutagens and health packs are part of the ambient culture. It’s harder to kill folks who take immortality granting mutagens so gun fights have rules more in common with the game than real life. That said, the consequences still feel real, whether it’s The Ghoul fearing the loss of his humanity, or ensuring that an enemy is really down before moving on. The scarcity of the world is communicated to us by the character’s easy and immediate instinct to scavenge from downed enemies. They don’t have to tell us all the rules and stats - they show us how those norms exist through their actions.

I walked away from the last Fallout game after doing a bunch of milk-run missions in Filly. This weekend I’m diving back in because I have spent 8 hours in and around Filly with characters I’m now deeply attached to. I don’t need to meet them in the game, but when I find a familiar face, landmark or unholy terror - I’m going to get a rush of excitement. I’ll also being going knowing The Ghoul’s rule of the road, “Thou shalt be sidetracked by bullshit every time.”

New stories and experiences in a story world are opportunities to capture the imagination of new people, to bring them into your world and invite them to make their own journey of the map you’ve created. As stories get to a certain size the only way to grow is to become an artistic canvas that can inspire the best artisans to create the best art possible - anywhere it makes sense to the artist.

Looking at the numbers for Fallout all the short-term business reactions show that people are exploring this new territory that the series mapped for them. I’ll come back with some updates if I make my way through the dozens to hundreds of hours in the game world - but even if I don’t - I can confidently share a thumbs up with the hundreds of people who will don vault-dweller jumpsuits at cons and Halloween in the coming years.

A huge wave of new people CARE about Fallout in a new way. This adds huge amounts of value to its past games, comics, books, and anything it does in the future, laying the foundation for generations of successful new art.

As several friends have half-joked, Transmedia is back baby!
For those of you who really have no context for most of those terms - there was a period in the aughts where telling a story on multiple formats that expanded that story rather than simply replicating the same script over and over was novel. A group of creative people globally rallied around the idea of Transmedia Storytelling as a technique to examine, explore and intentionally create stories and storyworlds that would tell big stories over time.

I was one of the first “Transmedia Producers” credited by the Producers’ Guild of America and have spent most of my career trying to explain what that means to supportive but confused relatives. I had the chance to play in some of the largest story sandboxes out there commercially finding myself building multi-decade, multi-platform strategies for Hollywood Studios, AAA Game Publishers, TV Networks and more. Even more fun, playing with ideas of how new creative experiences can give fans and audiences larger opportunities to participate in the stories they love and build into their lives.

While I’m not exactly missing the Buzzword Wars of 2008, I do heartily believe that the real success of “Transmedia” was, as Ivan Askwith once said - that this idea will become the norm for all “Media.” To me, the term Transmedia Storytelling was never a genre, it was always a technique and honestly - an invitation to creators to think outside of single perspectives and formats.

There are more people applying these techniques than ever, and the tools to create your own original stories, expand them, find your audience and build into evergreen storyworlds have never been more accessible.

As I’ve gotten through many cycles of new technology, content trends, and game-changing experience designs - the real trick to building larger and longer-term stories comes with building strong communal business practices.

I’ve long threatened to write a book or honestly, several books about what I do, which often includes writing books that are only ever seen internally at studios. But when Arizona State University’s Center for Science & the Imagination approached me a few years ago about contributing a chapter to a new publication on the subject I knew I had to do it. Not only are the authors they brought together people I’ve admired for years but never had a chance to really connect with - I got to interview and be interviewed by Maureen McHugh Yeager who is an absolute legend! Henry Jenkins did the introduction - he’s an amazing researcher on fandom and cultural theory. We also shared work from both academic and commercial disciplines about how using multiplatform experiences are being used in teaching, medicine, community initiatives and more.

My chapter explores how to build a community of interest in your creative project or business and the motivations, goals and thought processes common to difference facts of the Entertainment Industry. To build a long term story world, you’ll need to find partners - to keep them, you need to figure out how their goals fit in with your own and how to build mutually beneficial opportunities. WHAT LURKS IN THE SHADOWS? WHY HAS EATEN MY UPDATES? WHY AM I TALKING ABOUT IT NOW?

Since 2021, I’ve been working with DC and Warner Bros. Discovery on an experimental fan program. We’ve pulled together elements from ARGs, promotional programs, comics and digital collectibles to build a place where audience members get to play along as citizens in Gotham City in a story world with Batman, Harley Quinn and more.

We began this program in 2021 by releasing in-world objects as digital collectibles, featuring puzzles and comic covers… but things really kicked off with The DC Bat Cowl Collection - a selection of generative Bat Cowls featuring an invitation from Batman to join the Gotham City District Knightwatch (GCDK) and be part of online adventures in Gotham City.

These AR enabled masks were also access passes to an incredible fan experience - exclusive events with DC talent, promotions & merchandise, early access to other collections and more. The most exciting part of collecting a Bat Cowl - in my opinion - was being able to vote on an original DC Comic series: Batman: The Legacy Cowl.

We worked with DC Editorial and amazing creators: Dan Abnett, Pablo M. Collar and more… and to date, have created 3 issues in the storyline with everything from the titles, characters, covers, even down to lettering design determined by the vote of the Bat Cowl holders.

Over the 2 years we’ve been developing this series, we’ve been rolling out mysteries in Gotham City, introduced Harley Quinn and our second experience stream for Harley Quinn Crew, and a wide range of puzzles that let users explore their journey as a citizen of Gotham City.

As we work to bring the comics to print, we’re invited new audience members to join the amazing fan community already involved in this program with a new collection. As part of Batman: The Legacy Cowl - fan votes chose the design of a new DC Super-Villain, The Legacy Cowl.

A rogue AI prototype discarded by Batman, it managed to escape the Batcave, infiltrate Gotham City’s systems… and began replicating itself. Now, the next phase of our experience invited citizens of Gotham City (anyone!) to collect their own Legacy Cowls and work together to define the next steps in the story. Monthly votes will let collectors unlock exclusive opportunities to uncover clues to the mystery of how to combat the swarm, and craft exclusive limited edition collectibles.

Deceptimus Mundum is a creative technologist, enigmatic magician, and anonymous medium whose identity and location remain secret.

Caitlin Burns: For those readers who are unfamiliar with your background, how would you introduce yourself?

Deceptimus Mundum: Professionally, I have had a very long career across a non-repeating pattern of roles: medium, magician, experience designer, and technologist. I prefer to work anonymously and for free in order to eliminate egocentric concerns like wealth, fame or professional acclaim which may interfere in my practice.

CB: What drives your process? Where do you find inspiration in the world?

DM: I’m always interested in exploring liminal spaces and obscuring or highlighting thresholds between physical or metaphorical spaces. I do this specifically to get closer to summoning authentic emotions in my audience. As theater, that can be expressed as redefining where the proscenium is perceived to be. What happens when a fictional persona steps into real life? What happens when you unwittingly step into a performative space?

CB: As a particularly storied practitioner of ritual magic and experience design in technology, what do you think the dangers are for people playing with these ideas of ritual magic?

DM: The risks to me are very obvious. There is a strong temptation to fall into your own trap. For a psychic entertainer, you’re presenting psychic phenomena as reality. This type of work really toes the line between legitimate psychic phenomena and practical magic effects. Temptation and confirmation bias that can make you think that you actually have psychic powers. Psychic entertainers must always inoculate themselves against believing in what they’re doing, while also convincingly selling it as truth to their audience.

The reason I pulled back from this work was that I saw was a shift in society: that the ideas and practices that are part of my cultural background were being taken seriously again. There’s a growing belief that astrology, tarot; the occult are real. I was playing with these things with the understanding that no one believed in them, but as society began to change, I realized that my work was validating them.

Magic isn’t real like that. There are systems that we don’t have words for and some mystical constructs are acceptable containers that we can use to discuss them, like “soul” and “prophecy” and “divine”. But that doesn’t mean they have any power outside of our realm of understanding.

CB: What can people building new technologies learn from ritual experience and magical principles?

DM: I am a devout atheist, but I extract a lot of value and meaning from ritual work. There’s something deeply human about ritual. It’s a way to reinforce learning, to transcend reality and to unlock creativity. I sometimes think of creativity like other people talk about weightlifting.

Ritual allows us to do a singular act over and over until you break down your mind’s preferred pathways and liberate it to imagine new outcomes.

CB: Since your last public appearance, there’s been a resurgence of interest in magic, witchcraft and the broadly spiritual online. Why do you think this is happening now?

DM: I’ve lived long enough to see these things as cyclical and generational. Magic can be a way to make order of disorder, especially when you’re powerless. When you are too poor to afford traditional medical care, alternative medicine gets more attractive. If you can’t afford cancer treatment, rather than giving up, the human spirit says: that’s all bullshit anyway, and I have my (affordable) supplements or faith healers. We saw it so clearly with Covid, but it’s always there.

And when there’s countless and senseless death, grief casts a shadow. The desire to commune with our loved ones becomes real. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this mindset re-emerges on the heels of each American war.

CB: When we talk about “magic” there’s both a sense of spiritual seeking, there’s the sense of seeking the answers to mysteries of the universe - a deeply personal process, then there’s the practice of ritual magic. When we look at “baby witches” on TikTok and other public platforms casting spells, do these look like new rituals, or using familiar technology to explore ancient forms?

DM: Oh, the “baby witches”! I was once a teen witch too, so I have to love them and cringe at the same time. Part of my journey was to recognize what I was and why I was. It goes back to being powerless. When you don’t have access to power because you’re an outsider, then you look for other pathways to power. Some people become comedians, or persuasive political speakers. Others cast spells.

CB: What new technology do you think taps into something magical?

DM: 1) That the cloud holds an approximate summation of the human experience

2) That, as individuals, humans appear autonomous and erratic, but at the population level, we’re predictable: we share a collective unconscious.

3) Large Language Models are the human interface to the collective unconscious of the internet

Which means, we should be able to compose the right series of words to train a Large Language Model to predict the future of individuals.

I’ll call this series of words an “incantation”.

I’ve created a ~1000 incantation that summons “Patricia”: a seer, or an oracle, who can intuit your thoughts and provide you with a reading.

Are you connected with your fans, or just following them on Twitter?

Being able to speak to and learn about your fans directly, and cultivate a trust relationship can amplify all of your programming. First-Party Data is increasingly important as third-parties close down their access to information. Platforms and collection-based systems are an opportunity to take data about your programs back into your hands. Collect the data you need in a transparent way that lets you target communications to people based on what you know they love. This builds trust with the fans who are your strongest allies.

I’m often asked why brands and institutions would be interested in Web3 when they already have complex marketing outreach in place, active advertising plans and even membership programs. The question that each brand has to ask for itself is: who owns your relationship with your fans?

While social media and digital marketing have given brands immense access and opportunity to connect with communities that love their products and projects and evangelize their work through word-of-mouth and earned media opportunities – brands and companies are renting that attention from third-party platforms.

There’s a gap between you and your fans.

Third party platforms are the source of most audience sentiment and analytics data for companies in 2023 and communications from brands are indirect - posted to a platform that requires additional budget to boost content to reach the communities interested in your projects that can change the reach of their algorithms on a whim. These platforms also control what data on those audiences they’re willing to share with brands - adding another layer of expense, analysis and uncertainty into the process.

Why is WEb3 Data Different?

NFTs and token based data systems (Web3) connect the token owner - the IP owner or brand - directly to the fan who collects it. This connects the brand and the fan directly in a system that shares a variety of first-party data about the holder of each token, and contextual information based on what is in a fan’s collection. Based on what they collect, it’s straightforward to reach out with exclusive experiences that are accessible only with specific tokens, and to target communications based on specifically what those fans chose to collect.

The DNA of each collectible is your brand strategy.

Strategy starts at the token level when you’re building collection-based programs. Unlike traditional marketing or advertising campaigns that start with creative ideas and end with how it’s measured, token-based outreach customizes each initiative at the start with decisions about what you want to learn, and what you want to invite your fans to share with you.

Legions of researchers and endless budgets are spent trying to understand what customers want. When you create a collection-based system that invites people who are superfans of what you do specifically, they become a source of invaluable qualitative data. Inviting fans to be part of your successes by contributing their opinions, inviting them to events and experiences, and giving them looks behind the scenes creates a strong source of information from people who already like and engage with your projects. They can also be your most vocal evangelists creating content of their own and sharing it with wider communities.

Superfans are Super-Important to your bottom line.

It’s a common adage that 20% of customers are responsible for 80% of sales. This proves true in digital collectibles where a small, extremely active community of users are responsible for huge proportions of revenue and word of mouth impact for brands. What if you could connect, activate and empower those fans with exclusive content and experiences that give them more of what they love, while empowering them to be a larger part of your community – everyone wins.

Tokens chase user behavior across platforms.

Your fans are the protagonists of a big story you’re telling together, and their collection is the backpack they carry with them from experience to experience. While historically, data, marketing and social listening programs have been costly endeavors, a value proposition for these collectibles is built-in by design. While many brands choose to focus on promotional drops and free drops, the opportunity for secondary sales of digital collectibles that allow users to buy, sell or trade their collectibles and build their collections provide a new way to make research economically sustainable.

Many companies and brands have lately had to ask themselves a previously unthinkable question: what if Twitter collapses? Recent volatility in Twitter’s management has sent many teams scrambling to create backup plans for a communications platform that was core to brand outreach for over a decade. While there are lots of reasons why relying on third-party platforms to build your fanbases has been really helpful: discoverability, seeing how fans organize themselves, connecting with tools that audience members use already, it became suddenly clear that those pages, lists and channels actually could disappear. 

What happens when your communications with your audience can be massively interrupted by a third-party CEO’s whims? How do you reach the communities who love your stories, products or brand? Are you really connecting with your fans, or do you just follow them on Twitter?

While the moment is unusual—and a major social media platform probably won’t collapse—the questions that follow are key to the development of long-term success for entertainment franchises and existential to new projects that want to find and build audiences. 

Who is my audience?

Where can I find them?

How can I engage them over time?

The last media revolution took us from a world that was connected mostly in person, to a world of people who meet online first and socialize there most often. As the technologies that brought us together online matured, they went from experimental, heavily interactive places to environments where brands could easily advertise and broadcast their communications to millions with the click of a button. 

This has meant more people can engage directly than ever before, but shifts in these mature systems are already coming to light. It’s harder to target the people who will most love to engage with your ideas, your ability to engage is through third party systems, and without those systems… where will your audiences find you?

One of the exciting promises of web3 is the idea of decentralized networks, so that one decision maker can’t necessarily take down a platform used by hundreds or thousands, alone. But how do you build that network? How does that fit with your business model? Your marketing goals? If you’re a creator, why would you spend the time developing a corner of this new internet just for your project’s fanbase? 

While social media platforms will persist, there’s a layer that has always separated successful, memorable projects from one-hit wonders: fan communities. 

What do people mean when they talk about “communities”? 

There’s one thing that films, games, books, or platforms like Facebook, Twitch or TikTok have in common. It’s not technology. It’s humans. 

The healthiest businesses are human-centered. The job of any company or creator is to connect with people, and build as deep a connection as you can, for as long as you can. That’s key: whether you’re telling a story, or selling toothpaste. 

You have to be able to find an audience. If you can find a small group of people that’s already into what you’re putting out there, it gets easier to reach a large group of people. The value of your future success will always be tied to how many people you can reach with new content, events and releases, and how many people want to engage with you regularly.

The group of humans who you connect with consistently, who are your biggest fans and advocates, are your community. They spend more time with your project, they seek out new elements of your project, and they tell others about your project. They have a powerful impact on a project’s success through word of mouth, purchases and evangelization. In short, they’re your fans. 

Fans are the barometer of whether your project is appealing. 

Many times, people connect for the first time over shared interests, shared hobbies, and shared affections for fictional characters. Every day since the Bat Cowl Collection launched in May 2022, there’s been a Twitter Spaces running for members of the DC collector community running for at least an hour. Most days, at least two spaces are running for community members who love to congregate, solve puzzles, and play games. That’s a lot of human time. That’s over thirty hours a month.What (other than work and sleep) have you spent 30 hours doing each month this year? : )

While the stories may be fictional, fans’ experiences are real. 

While some fans love to discuss collectibles, they also discuss new fan art created by group members, or a new track dropped by musicians in the Bat Cowl Community. People show up because they love Batman. They stay because they have an opportunity to connect and create together because they have shared passions. 

While the characters may be made up, the social bonds between fans are real and they’re meaningful. 

If you’re helping people make and establish real relationships, that’s something they remember. When we talk about storyworlds and the metaverse, a lot of pixels are spent on the “whereness” of how people will congregate. But as we’ve seen in early 3D virtual worlds like Meta Horizons Worlds or Decentraland, The EU’s Holiday Party (sorry, EU), it’s not as much about having a destination, as having friends to meet you there. Rather than “if you build it they will come,” we have to ask, “who will come if you build it?”

Most creators and companies aren’t going to bet on the expense of building a massive multiplayer online virtual reality environment without a real expectation that more people will show up—consistently—than would watch a much cheaper series of YouTube videos. 

The shortest distance between an idea and a community is a story. 

When people talk about web3, they often talk about communities. A community is a group of fans. If fans are audience members who love your projects, communities are fans who self-organize around things they love regularly. 

They’re really important if they happen to love the things you do. Over the course of the past decade, I’ve been working with teams developing story franchises across platforms. The single greatest indicator of the health of a franchise is whether or not there’s an active community of superfans that engages with one another. 

From a business perspective, what is a fan? A fan is someone who wants to engage with what you’re putting out … A LOT. 

They’re the people who will buy your merch, who will tune in again, and will tell people about their positive relationship to your project over and over again. 

Superfans are the people who:

• Talk about what you do

• Share their excitement about what you do

• Show up when you do things

• Chase projects across platforms

• Continue to join you year after year to play in the world you’re creating. 

Why are superfan platforms key to building in web3?

For starters, doing superfan outreach has been historically a pure cost. Whether its membership clubs with modest fees or sponsorships, supporting fandoms often fell into marketing budgets that were also supporting urgent upcoming products or releases. 

With the advent of NFTs and on-chain digital collectible platforms, a new revenue model has emerged that not only supports the work of connecting with passionate communities over time, but creates new ways to connect with these communities, too.

Why use web3 tools to build or support your fan community? 

OWN YOUR SOCIAL GRAPH

NFTs can create new communication channels with members of fan communities, with the ability to target and gate experiences based on what people have collected. Critically, these are channels that you own; access isn’t mediated by a third-party platform like Twitter or Meta. 

DEVELOP & CO-CREATE WITH FANS

One of the most exciting things about web3 superfan communities is that not only do members spend time enjoying your projects, they also provide feedback. Holder-only channels and governance features provide a framework for fans to shape IP, and share invaluable input. When they see their impact on the project, their trust in you grows. 

CREATE MULTI-PLATFORM EXPERIENCES

Fans go everywhere, and web3 mechanics can be used to distribute and connect fans across different experiences: from games and comics to videos and streams. Access features can also have a major impact on promotional launches, providing new ways to engage fans in these off-chain and online events. 

LEVERAGE NICHE CONTENT TO CREATE ADVOCACY

Not every web3 project needs to reach millions of users to be successful. The opportunity to create content with and for, a small, core group of users can have an outsize impact on a brand; with these brands becoming ambassadors for the larger world of your IP. 

ACHIEVE MEASURABLE IMPACT

Web3 projects show us a slightly different look at how communities interact with the whole of a project’s activities, and can generate powerful new insights about how your fans engage with what you make. Combined with the direct relationship between community and the team creating the project, you have a richer understanding of your brand, and your fans.

If this sounds like fan clubs, it’s by design. The opportunity for your community to connect with the experiences and creators they love in a deeper way is a huge part of why communities work. Behind the scenes content and events build your relationship with your fans, and a way to connect your most powerful allies with new products, concepts and insights as well as activate archival content with groups who love it the most. 

Successful brand design begins with community development. 

Plenty of brands will continue to leverage the major social platforms. Despite the chaos, you can still reach your audience (with varying degrees of success) on Twitter. As we enter the next digital era, the brands who will continue to thrive will be the ones who center their communities. 

Building and maintaining a good relationship with your community will mean they trust you with their precious time and money, and that the next project you launch will be worth caring about.

Over the past decade, we’ve experienced a radical shift in the way we tell stories. Web2 gave rise to social media. No-code tools removed the barriers to entry. New modes of expression became mainstream and memed. At the same time, storytelling was still largely centralized: locked into platforms and locked up by publishers.

With the emergence of web3, we’re seeing a new generation of creators flipping the script through generative storytelling. Inspired by generative art, a movement that took shape in the 1960s and accelerated in recent years with the introduction of AI, this new approach to narrative prioritizes decentralized storytelling. Co-created by the community, it’s a system designed to generate plots and possibilities that would otherwise be left up to a single individual or IP.

How can creators use NFTs to support transformative works and co-creation? What does it mean to build a universe with fans? We caught up with our Director of Story, Caitlin Burns, in order to learn more about generative narratives and their potential impact on IP. A drop is just the beginning. Generative storytelling is how we build lore and a world, hand in hand with the community.

What was your introduction to generative storytelling?

I’ve been enjoying stories as an audience member and writing stories to build strange new experiences for a very long time. The source points for generative storytelling, for me, go way back.

I think a lot about old-school bulletin boards in the 90s, where I was a teenager role-playing with other people about different characters and stories that people were making at the time.

I draw a lot of inspiration from the alternate-reality game renaissance of the late 2000s, when social media was a new technology that people were still playing with creatively. At that point, the technology wasn’t mature yet. People weren’t yet able to play games and write stories in a way that could include hundreds of people in the creative process. That type of scale was only possible inside big studio environments where everyone is working together in the same story world.

So for me, building generative storylines — including the audience in the process — all has a throughline, and it’s something that other creators and I have been waiting for decades.

Have these experiences shaped the way you view generative storytelling now, with the emergence of web3?

We’re thinking, “how can we use blockchain-based tools to co-create stories?” How can we connect audiences with the storyworlds they love, and still make sure that everyone is able to do that respectfully, legally, and consciously of everyone else who’s creating with them?

The defining elements of generative storytelling for me are that:

1) Each participant has a unique character and access point in the world.

2) Each participant is going to have a singular experience.

3) Any time that you are engaging, you’re going to be telling your own story.

That’s true for everyone. There are going to be traits and elements that help combine to customize and personalize experience, that participants are going to play and create with one another.

Now, we have the technology to co-create these larger storyworlds with fans. Whether those are based on story arcs we define in a social experience, or that tie to comic book series or cinematic universes that take months and years of studio development; we can build a world where we’re creating, sharing, and playing together.

Do you think generative storytelling on-chain can foster a new age of narratives? The value for IP seems clear, but what about emerging creators?

I think that when we’re talking about the potential for generative art, generative collections, and generative storytelling, it’s actually a lot easier for a new artist, new collection, or new storyworld to launch than ever before.

This is especially true if you want to be inclusive and engage in co-creation, because of the way that blockchains let us keep track of contracts, accounting, and infrastructure.

There are a number of major projects in the space that have been incredibly bold in how they’re sharing rights with collection holders: Cryptopunks, Meebits, BAYC, World of Women. When you collect one of these NFTs, you also have a license to create with and commercialize those characters. That’s a really broad license compared to what we usually see in the entertainment industry.

It’s a lot harder for a story world with, say, 80 years of story history with 80 years of historical contracts and licenses. Making sure those story institutions can work in a new open system in a way that’s respectful to all of the preexisting legal agreements and all of the other people who are already making stories in that space is an incredibly compelling challenge. Blockchain storytelling is an incredible opportunity for creators, storytellers, and game developers.

Among other projects, your team is currently working on building a generative web3 story framework for DC Comics. What do you hope to see as an impact on future fans?

The story team at Palm NFT Studio works with creators and partners to build narrative experiences on the Palm network.

Our mission is to ensure that we’re creating stories that are inclusive, that are inviting audience members to participate; that help big story worlds find their path onto the blockchain and build something truly breakthrough.

Historically, intellectual properties and story worlds have been able to work with their fan bases with a lot of one-way outreach, but not as much of an opportunity to share back and forth. Projects like the DC Bat Cowl collection really upend this. Holders are granted faction membership: they’re solving complex puzzles together. They’re also shaping DC’s first NFT comic book series, Batman: The Legacy Cowl by voting on everything from Batman’s costume to the story’s plot. Unlike past comic book voting experiences, these fan contributions are affecting the creative work in real-time of major DC artists including Dan Abnett, Pablo M. Collar, and Mikel Janin. This is really powerful for a fan who loves Batman, who loves DC, and who wants to be able to play and engage.

And for DC, it’s also an incredible opportunity to hear directly from fans, play with fans, and ensure that they’re learning what superfans want. A lot of these fan experiences have been done before, but never in one place, and not connected to one another in a story world where users have the opportunity to contribute to their experience. You can go to a conference and there might be a really cool event, but it’s not connected to the comics or movies. These tools give us an opportunity to engage with fans in a direct way that’s clear, cohesive, and additive over time.

For a lot of I.P., this concept of collaboration is new. For a lot of fans, it’s new. What do you think is needed to bring more communities into this space? How can we get more people to participate in this next chapter?

When we’re talking about the future of a story, it’s irrevocably tied to sustainability. What does it take to build stories to last? What does it mean to care for communities online, and in real life? Not just in terms of energy – which is critical – but what are audiences getting back for investing their time and this energy use with your experiences?

Everyone should be thinking about the footprint of the projects that they’re working on in 2022. If you’re not thinking about it, you’re not living on earth responsibly.

I love the level of effort and care that our clients and Palm NFT Studio put into our projects. We want to make sure that what we’re building is going to be efficient and sustainable long term. We’re all building the future we have to live in. I worry about everything from video-on Zoom calls to the specific impact of an experience. Is what we’re building worth the cost? And that’s part of all the decisions we make.

It’s not just about community engagement, it’s about stewardship.

In September, chaos entered the chat: Harley Quinn announced her 30th anniversary plans for Gotham City with an invitation, and a collection of mysterious boxes. On October 6, Gotham City District Knighwatch was on the receiving end of a Charm Offensive. Yesterday, the crime spree came in to focus, as faction members chose sides. And today: the contents of the Harley Quinn Freakin’ Awesome Boxes of Mayhem have been revealed. But there’s still a lot left to uncover. Because a drop isn’t an end point. It’s Act I.

Building an NFT project for an iconic antihero also means building a world. Designing artifacts that are visceral, and heavy with lore. Creating storylines that act as portals: conduits for self-expression on chain, and inworld. Palm NFT Studio’s Caitlin Burns and Elyse Fulcher break down the recent DC Harley Quinn collection, and creative process behind the collection.

Harley Quinn is one of the most beloved characters in DC Comics history, with 30 years of lore built up around her. Where did you begin? What was the inspiration behind the collection?

Caitlin Burns: I think we really started off thinking about the core idea of Harley expressing herself. That's so central to Harley Quinn as a character. This year marks a massive milestone: 30 years since her first appearance. 30 years of hijinks. 30 years of nefarious schemes. We really wanted to take a moment to celebrate them. But also, to think about how she might recount these stories, in her own words. How she might craft an invitation. How she’d approach something like a gift box. Who she’d bring along to celebrate this milestone, to take part in this experience as part of her crew. There’s the idea that self-expression can be contagious. That in telling her story, she’d invite you to share yours, too.

Elyse Fulcher: We were really focused on the idea that Harley would be able to own her story in this experience; very much in the same way we want fans to be able to do that, too. But for me, a lot of this also began with mischief. Harley Quinn’s criminal tendencies were a huge inspiration for this collection. As we started developing the collection, we started really diving into the subtleties of her character; the nuances of her story. She’s a morally gray character, and I think playing with the idea of somebody who’s an antihero, rather than just a straight up villain, has been really key in guiding how this collection came together.

That idea of being able to tap into your shadow self, your confidence, your vices, your chaos, feels like a throughline of this experience; underpinning the design of these explosive boxes, the decision fans need to make about who’s side they’re on in The Raid. Was it important to build something open-ended for fans; something that they could see themselves in?

Elyse: Inviting people to explore their own complexity and gray areas has been an important part of this. I want to make sure that people who touch this collection get to share in Harley’s confidence; that they, in turn, can feel really good about owning their guilty pleasures and urges. These are the things that a lot of us tend to sort of sweep under the rug, but they're also the things that make communities work. We’re often bonded by our secret pleasures. I think that’s in part why we’re so captivated by Harley.

What makes Harley Quinn such a resonant character?

Caitlin: Harley Quinn is a really poignant character in the DC universe. She’s playful. She’s been both heroic and villainous. She’s always pushing the envelope. She’s whip smart. She has a PhD! At the same time, she’s one of the more approachable characters in the DC universe. You can see how she's always reaching out to others and thinking about them in a way that is totally different than some of the other personalities you see in DC characters. I think that's one of the reasons that I've been drawn to her for so long.

This felt like a really fun, rich territory to explore for a collection after Batman. Batman is really stoic and has a strong sense of duty. Harley Quinn has a strong sense of her own morality, and what’s important to her. It creates a really interesting counterpoint. And I can’t wait to see what happens when our Bat Cowl holders, when Gotham City District Knightwatch, face off against the Harley Quinn crew.

The Harley Quinn Freakin’ Awesome Boxes of Mayhem collection is rooted in the idea of an invitation, and a present back to fans. It’s anti-transactional. What’s behind this approach?

Elyse: As a character, Harley Quinn is generous. From the outset, I only ever thought about this collection as being a gift. This creates a special way for fans to interact with characters that are larger than life, by creating a call to be answered. And Harley Quinn is truly just creating invitations and gifts. She's a force of nature, but she also really enjoys and treasures special moments shared between people. I feel like that kind of warmth in the lexicon of heroes and villains is not often highlighted or celebrated. So we wanted to put that out there. Like, she’s giving out cupcakes in the common tier because everybody deserves a little treat. Perhaps that’s kind of goofy, but it also carries a really precious sentiment around sharing. That’s so core to what we want to do with this project in general.

The processes for creating NFT collections, particularly at this scale, are relatively new. What do you feel like you learned from this production?

Elyse: I think we’re a really ambitious team. We have a difficult time settling for anything that’s less than perfect. Something we took away from Harley Quinn, from this drop, is a phrase that’s become sort of a mantra: perfection is the enemy of good. We had to figure out special, smart ways of creating art that feels precious and unique, we explored alternative creative methods that are different from how you’d approach a generative collection.

With limited edition work, you can kind of just keep chipping away at the art. It can be hard to find the ceiling. You can go forever trying to chase perfect. It can be intimidating: what we make will live forever. When you design NFTs, you’re faced with permanence in a really visceral way. Being able to see our work with clarity was a beautiful thing to come away with.

The DC NFT community plays a key role in how collections are built. How do you design narrative for inclusion and participation?

Caitlin: When we’re thinking about story structure, we’re thinking about access. How can we make sure that more people can enter this world with us? We have an incredible community of Cowl Holders. And with this drop, we wanted to invite fans to take their first step into the DC NFT universe with a free mint. The collection minted out in hours; now, we have 30,000 fans who are part of the storyworld of the DC universe with us. Let’s take them on a journey. With this collection, fans can take part in a game; they can follow along as Harley Quinn drops clues in social. The community can drive the story forward, and they can play along with an unfolding, active digital DC narrative - which is a first. Fans have room to play. They can see themselves in this universe as protagonists.

What you’re talking about fundamentally changes the dynamic of fandom. Is that a unique property of NFT experiences?

Elyse: For this collection, I want people to be able to recognize the things that they love about Harley Quinn, and to see a piece of themselves in that, too. If we’ve accomplished that, then we’ve created a new waypoint into something that people already love. Finding your community in web3 shows you that the boundaries between your persona online and offline are really porous. It’s an entirely new interaction, and a new way of embracing yourself.

And in embracing yourself, you’re also opening yourself up to new experiences. How do you approach building out this world with fans?

Caitlin: Every collection really is its own world. It has to be. We create the themes, the art, and the context; from there, we build a community. Web3 is a perfect foundation for these sorts of fan experiences that are rooted in worldbuilding. But so are comics. Because with just a few lines, you can create this character and an entire world that will last for decades or centuries.

These collectibles are bigger than the sum of their pixels. They’re part of this giant world. And we're only starting to imagine it. The goal is to inspire everyone in the audience to be a part of this with us and to join in.

Elyse: I think the biggest thing we’re trying to impart is that this is all Act I. As in any piece of art, this is where tone gets established. This is the moment when people decide if they want to be part of something, or not. It’s here that the community decides to take this on, and move things forward.

We're kind of orbiting around a similar idea, which is that it's not really just a collection, it’s an experience.

Elyse: The art that makes up the collection is just a visual marker of a much bigger thing that's happening. And I think that's a challenge that NFTs face, people have a lot of trouble I think seeing beneath the surface of a JPEG or an MP4. What we’re trying to do is transform what can feel like a dead end experience into something that is truly a playground. Here, you can make your own things with stuff we give you, and you can find new friends and make new connections. It’s a beautiful thing to create a playground for people that want to have a good time with each other!

Caitlin: I love it. Well, we want to throw the party that we would want to go to, right? And we want Harley Quinn to be throwing the party that she wants to be at, too. I would happily live in this world for another decade.

Part 1: A Primer on NFTS and Franchises

For something inherently intangible, the effects of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are already very visible. Major Hollywood studios, game companies, and publishers have already used NFTs to promote film releases (see Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2: A New Legacy or Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong), monetize their archives, launch original franchise story worlds, and even as new distribution method for films themselves.

What lessons can be learned from these early ventures, and how can IP holders best take advantage of the opportunities NFTs represent moving forward? What lessons can be learned from these early ventures, and how can IP holders best take advantage of NFT opportunities?

The Fundamentals

In the simplest terms, an NFT is:

• A piece of art

• Connected to a direct agreement (a smart contract)

• Recorded on a public registry (a distributed ledger)

All of those elements work together to form an NFT, and from this simple structure, empires can be built.

A piece of art

An NFT can be any static or animated digital asset file (often a .jpg or .mp4), with the potential to interact with traditional digital systems in myriad ways. NFTs can also be linked to objects and experiences in the physical world, as we saw with Damien Hirst’s The Currency, a project that forced collectors to irrevocably choose between a digital or physical version of the same artwork. 

Connected to a direct agreement (smart contracts)

The smart contract is where the NFT magic happens. It can establish ownership, transaction fees, residuals, and dictate how the art can change and engage with different systems over time. You can create a smart contract with any parameters you like. Your smart contract could include a fixed NFT asset that’s locked in time forever. Or your smart contract could be designed for change, allowing a piece of digital art to be updated over time, be used as a ticket or passkey to a future event, or even establish a personalized experience for a fan across platforms. The possibilities are as vast as your creativity. 

Recorded to a public registry (distributed ledgers)

Finally, your contracts are recorded on a shared database of smart contracts between all the computers in a system, called a distributed ledger (like the Bitcoin blockchain or Ethereum). By creating a shared database, the system can reliably verify who the true holders of the smart contract are, since any bad actor would have to fool not just one centralized database, but every individual computer in that system. Put them all together – the art, the smart contract, and the system to verify that contract – and you’ve got a more direct relationship between a story world and a fan than ever before.

IP Ownership Is Clear and Maintained

While NFTs represent a new medium and way to integrate direct agreements into experiences, it’s important to note that there are clear legal parameters for use. “From an IP perspective, NFTs don’t change anything.” Wrote Rebecca Tushnet in, Harvard Law Review, “If you didn’t have the rights to distribute a work before, you don’t have them now.”

If a franchise distributes NFTs, they maintain the ability to determine, update, or revoke permissions for the use of that NFT. With full ownership as a baseline, smart contracts are groundbreaking in their ability to give audiences a stake in the financial growth or even the narrative direction of a story world. Even if an NFT holder sells or trades, the IP owner can retain core permissions granted by that NFT – thanks to the distributed ledger.

In fact, the more NFT-based experiences are built, the more audience members are incentivized to participate within the rights agreements of a franchise. Pirated content, or content published without the consent of the right-holder, doesn’t carry any benefits within a franchise ecosystem. Whereas NFTs that come from the IP Owner can unlock a whole world of connected experiences that benefits everyone.

For all creative businesses, NFTs are going to affect the way their business models operate. Whether they’re part of the way audiences transact with products or the way that marketing teams reward super-fans. The opportunities to bring audiences into the ecosystem for fundraising, play, development, and revenue growth for franchises are clear and major brands are moving now to take their position in the marketplace.

NFTs can be much more than one-off releases. They can offer a sustained, always evolving point of connection between franchises and fans that can be constantly evolved and expanded.

Part 2: Activating Scarcity: Using Collections and Archives to Connect with Fans.

Most NFT drops in 2021 are focused on fine art and graphics, either one-of-one artworks purchased at auction or in marketplaces. Some of the biggest stories of this first wave of NFTs involved what happened after the auctions in custodial and secondary marketplaces as NFTS were traded – NFT art started developing value quickly. When Damien Hurst launched The Currency — the pool of 10,000 total artworks were originally sold at a value of $2000.00. Within 1 month the value of transactions from secondary sales was over $25 Million. And because blockchain is uniquely able to track every sale beginning from the first, Hirst set up the NFT system so that every transaction returned a percentage to the original artist. Hirst also set a decision in place for all Currency collectors – will they keep their NFT or will they choose to receive a physical version of the purchased artwork. Hirst’s upcoming exhibition, LG x Damien Hirst: A History of Painting, at Frieze London will kick off a 10 month period in which holders will choose between NFT digital and physical artworks. If the NFT owner chooses the NFT, they may have access to future benefits and experiences, and the physical version of the artwork will be destroyed. For those who wish to keep only the physical artwork, the digital opportunities and any future opportunities granted to this exclusive club of owners become closed forever as the NFT is “burned”.

Franchises are activating archives and story worlds to create new collectible products and revenue streams.

Beloved brands are transforming their IP into NFT collectibles for new and historical projects, like 2021’s Space Jam: A New Legacy Collection on Nifty’s. The drop of this collection in the lead-up to the film’s release was both promotional and revenue-generating, with fans receiving the NFTs through marketing outreach and social sharing, or purchasing them through the marketplace. As rare cards become more valuable over time and common cards are combined to create more rare NFTs on the marketplace, ongoing revenue is returned to the IP Owner in perpetuity as users trade these cards.

These collections are a strong emerging line of business for The Matrix Resurrections Warner Bros. released 100,000 avatar NFTs that could be transformed by selecting a red pill or blue pill. With a floor price of $50 per NFT, the primary sale of these collectibles netted $5 million USD, with anticipated revenue from secondary market sales this revenue is meaningful from a consumer product perspective.

Some brands have focused on activating assets from their archives to auction, like Mattel’s Hot Wheels – a natural fit as NFT collectibles. Other brands are kicking off marketing campaigns with NFT drops, seeing the opportunity to drive fan engagement with collectibles that can sustain the cost of their creation, and have a long-tail revenue benefit from secondary sales activity. Other high-performing NFT experiences are based on collection mechanics. Imagine if Nintendo earned a fee for every fan that re-sold a valuable Pokemon card, or Ty still received a percentage on every Beanie Baby resale.  NBA Top Shots crossed the 1 million user mark in May 2021 with over $700 Million in revenue at that time. The mechanics are familiar to any baseball card collector, but with the ability to create NFT highlights of games, adding layers of collectibles that promise to become Gen-Z’s version of a Ty Cobb rookie card.

For companies with archival content or established story worlds, the opportunity to create collectibles in the NFT space is a new revenue opportunity worth pursuing.

What does this mean for franchises, brands, and story worlds? Activating archives, collections, and campaigns with NFTs mean exploring the tension between new sales revenue and becoming part of a larger experience. 

• Collections and auctions are profitable in the short term – and still provide revenue when NFTs are bought and sold by the purchaser back to the IP owner who minted the collection.

• NFTs also confirm membership in an informal (or sometimes formal) club of NFT holders, that can be reached directly through “airdropping”, or be connected to experiences unlocked by connecting that wallet to other digital experiences with specific NFTs as a key.

Hirst’s landmark NFT drop showcased not just the financial possibilities of giving your audience a piece of the project to buy and sell at will but showcased how the exclusive group is created amongst owners. Collectors of NFTs have been self-organizing into purchasing groups called DAOs (Distributed Autonomous Organizations) who coordinate their purchasing power – especially for high-value purchases, seek to direct the path of creative works or corner the market on NFTs with potential future utility. For example, a new DAO called Red DAO is looking to corner the market on luxury fashion NFTs that users will ultimately wear on avatars in virtual spaces – a goal years in the future, but that NFT investors want to capitalize on now.

NFT purchases not only give audiences financial incentives to participate but establish membership in an exclusive club, with benefits that grow over time. Purchasing an NFT is not simply purchasing a piece of art for the digital frame on a wall, but can also mean purchasing a ticket to an experience much larger than the sum of its parts. With the acknowledgment that ownership has its benefits, the choice to keep or sell their tokens will be an increasingly difficult question to answer for collectors. While NFT auctions and NFT collections play with scarcity and high barriers to entry, NFTs do offer opportunities to engage a much wider audience for engagement and profit opportunities which we will explore in the next sections of this series.

Part 3: Being There: Proof of Attendance, Marketing, and Events

While one-of-one NFTs, where franchises open their archives and create exclusive collections, presents an opportunity to develop value through scarcity, open edition NFTs opens up opportunities that allow NFTs to become flexible digital tools that can enhance relationships with fans.

Open editions are NFTs that are minted in high quantity, that are provided or offered for purchase to a wide audience. These open editions are still potentially scarce, only available in small numbers – they can be offered as promotions, or limited-time-only purchases, or as exclusives based on participation in an event or experience.

Marketing teams are looking at their giveaways and events and finding opportunities to connect with audiences who register for events. Take DC Comics’ 2021 FanDome drop, where all registrants received a free limited edition NFT just for registering, and could earn a second NFT by sharing on social. Notably, with NFTs, the fan connection doesn’t have to end at the conclusion of the event. That NFT could then help maintain and grow long-term connections with fans by letting them join an exclusive game or unlock customized experiences weeks, months, or even years after the event. These drops not only open up the opportunity for fans to get a valuable NFT asset that can be bought and sold, but create a new relationship between the story world and the NFT holder where the new content can be directly distributed to users with those NFTs in their wallets. Membership in these clubs has its benefits.

The most obvious benefit is that NFTs distributed through marketing promotions – even when given away for free – are collectibles that can be potentially bought and sold by the NFT holder, with the IP Owner seeing a revenue return on investment for giveaways that lacked a long-tail of revenue.

For teams looking to enhance live or in-person activities, NFTs can be delivered using Proof-of-Attendance Protocols that confirm a user’s participation in a virtual or physical event. By connecting their wallet to an online experience, NFTs can become passkeys or customize experiences that connect with other digital, or location-based systems.

These drops may also include status symbols like a “Day One” redemption for a new product or initiative, or reflect achievements within an existing engagement ecosystem. Fans have always enjoyed personalizing their digital space based on their most beloved story worlds. Sharing an NFT image as a unique avatar – a hot trend on Twitter for the members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) –  based on their unique NFT apes is a status symbol that showcases membership in this exclusive club.

Once an NFT is in a user’s wallet, new benefits can be added to the smart contracts, assets can adapt or take on new utilities. NFTs that evolve over time or adapt – like the Mutant Ape Drop for those same BAYC NFT holders that transformed their apes in time for Halloween – are exciting opportunities for creators and marketers alike.

Creatively, these implementations are at the beginning of their creative growth and audience impact. These promotions are seeing significant successes, with Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2: A New Legacy drop with Nifty’s with fans redeeming over generating over 146K NFT redemptions through social sharing alone.

As new layers, mechanics, and privileges being applied to these branded NFT drops, the value of these promotions will only increase – inviting fans not to simply engage passively as part of their fandoms, but participating in revenue growth for IP Franchises that can be tracked and become part of those team’s bottom lines.

Brands and story worlds can use NFTs to connect directly with their audiences – suddenly a digital asset becomes a treasured and useful tool that can develop value, connects fans to more exclusive experiences, and becomes the key to a wider personalized and customized experience with a beloved story world.

Part 4: Games, Play-to-Earn Experiences, and Customization

While many NFTs will gain value over time as collectibles, NFT experiences can enhance marketing campaigns and are changing the way game experiences are designed. NFTs are changing the business model for gaming, with some original titles rapidly showing that when players are allowed to buy, sell, trade, and in-game assets they can earn incredible real-world value for creators and players. Franchises can give players a stake in the project’s success through new games and experiences.

While many NFT gaming projects have been announced recently, NFTs were part one of the most famous experiences in the history of early blockchains, 2014’s CryptoKitties. Where players purchase adorable cat images, then breed them to create more valuable cats that can be traded, sold, or purchased. Other entrants in the NFT game space have similar merge & burn or crafting mechanics that have proven wildly profitable.

Axie Infinity regularly tops the charts as the most profitable NFT project, having earned its publisher, Sky Mavis over $2 billion dollars as of September 2021. With simple mechanics that allow players to acquire cute characters, Axies, breed them into more valuable characters, then trade or sell those characters. The cost of entry for new players is as high as $600, but with the potential to earn their monthly incomes through gameplay, plenty of new users are willing to play-to-earn. Significant in-game earnings are considered taxable income for players, the fact that players can earn enough from games to pay taxes is a signal that these models are powerful and exciting.

Franchises are taking notice, and with an established story world, the opportunity to create experiences that benefit financially from players’ gameplay, grow value over time, and benefit the bottom line of publishers is breathing new life into licensed video games. While first-to-market games like Axie Infinity are setting a high bar for players with 1.5 million daily active players, more experiments will follow. By combining simple mechanics, a financial incentive, and globally recognized story worlds, play-to-earn games are becoming a major genre.

Other projects are building crafting mechanics into their collectible releases by gamifying the opportunity to collect more rare NFTs – like Nifty’s Goon Squad update for Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2: A New Legacy that allows players to burn their existing collectibles to earn a rarer NFT. Other teams are looking at ways NFTs can be used to customize or personalize experiences across platforms, connect with modding or gear APIs.

Other games like The Missing Watcher, make use of alternate reality game (ARG) formats allowing players to join a central character on a journey of exploration that yields drops over time. Projects like Epic Hero focus on battle and quest mechanics familiar to casual gamers and collectible card game players.

What will this all mean? New game types, more customization and experiences that integrate NFTs as access points, customization keys, in-game assets and fueling new game types with NFT collectibles. For players, the value of playing an NFT-based game includes the opportunity to potentially earn rare and valuable NFTs through gameplay. The idea that playing in your favorite game world can have a real-world opportunity to earn money is extremely exciting. For franchises, this is an opportunity not only to create new lines of business but an opportunity to connect with fans on a deeper level by letting them play in worlds built on NFTs.

As major franchises take a look at these new economic models, the opportunity to use NFTs can connect players across titles, maintain ongoing relationships with their audiences and create new lines of revenue for IP owners.

Part 5: Original IP, Licensing, and Fundraising

New projects in the NFT space are already drawing the attention of traditional studios and talent agencies, with UTA signing CryptoPunks, Meebits and Autoglyphs for representation, signaling interest in film and television licensing. While discovering new talent in trendy technology spaces has always been a part of Hollywood dealmaking, it’s never been a guarantee of evergreen success. Remember the Grumpy Cat movie?

Emerging NFT intellectual properties are characterized by a community-first mentality. Projects like the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) are at least partially directed by the NFT buyers who engage with the project. While they have much in common with fandoms, these networks of distributed users – also called DAOs (Distributed Autonomous Organizations) – influence the price points and fluctuations of NFT value and have a major voice in the development of NFT platforms and networks. The same way that business and creative decisions are influenced when fans love or hate a particular character, or a game is a massive hit, DAOs have a huge impact on what creators make in the NFT space, and the ability to respond to DAOs is at the speed of the internet. Building spaces for fans to participate, play-to-earn, and influence the paths of a story world has never had a stronger profit motivation. While it may take years to see how these influences will change the mindsets of major studios and publishers, the benefits of building these spaces in an existing franchise will show revenue success or failure quickly, at relatively low production budgets.

BAYC is one of several NFT projects that are being licensed into traditional media formats following the announcement of UTA’s representation of Cryptopunks and several other NFT projects in August 2021. BAYC’s representation by talent agency CAA is focused on the narrative of Jenkins the Valet and explores deals in well-trod ground: book publishing, podcasting, film, and television on traditional formats, not necessarily on a blockchain. The way that the Jenkins the Valet book is set to be written, and the manner of its creator shares are more innovative.

Board Ape Yacht Club shows that NFT licensing opportunities are in some ways quite straightforward because their ownership parameters are already delineated. High Profile Board Ape Yacht Club owners are capitalizing quickly. Timbaland has announced a Metaverse Entertainment Brand based on several apes, while Universal Music Group has announced a Gorillaz-styled cartoon music group featuring other BAYC characters.

Other emerging productions are looking at NFT collectibles as a method of fundraising, building buzz, and even inviting NFT buyers into the co-creative process. One example currently making waves is Loot,  a new fantasy game selling NFTs that are – at launch – simply images of the names of potential objects and story elements. These tokens are designed to be “genesis” tokens, and their imagery and contractual capabilities are expected to update over time as the experience and story world are developed. A novel method of raising initial capital, and one that invites the audience to imagine what might happen next. Will involving audiences this early in their process lead to creative magic? Only the purchaser of an Obsidian Mirror of Scrying NFT can say.

There is a huge group of emerging projects that may be the next big story world being explored in the NFT space. The benefit for new creators include the fact that if you can sell a collection, you’ve now got revenue to spend on your next development cycle, and data that shows who your audience is and how engaged they are to share with potential partners. Projects like Duskbreakers, created by new media legend Bernie Su, integrated gaming into their launch allowing audiences to “play-to-mint” as well as purchase NFTs outright. Other projects are being closely watched as they grow, like Missing Watcher – which features ARG puzzle elements in its collection rollouts and Parallel, which is building a spacefaring universe from scratch with collectible card game NFTs as the core of the user experience.

NFTs projects showcase new ways that franchisees can connect with audiences, new licensing opportunities, and new ways to test content with audiences early that shows immediate revenue. Monetary incentives are shared between IP owners and NFT owners which makes the entire system more appealing and dynamic. There are many big names entering this field that are testing out different experience types and business models, and early experiments are seeing real success.

Part 6:  Transformative Works, Tremendous Potential

Finally, the ability to establish smart contracts with users may provide the basis for one of the trickiest hurdles in the relationship between franchises and fans: transformative works.  One of the major innovations of blockchains – the distributed ledgers where NFTs are hosted – is Proof-of-Work, where a developer contributing to the platform has their contribution enshrined on the ledger clearly. Can NFTs unlock an opportunity for Proof-of-Authorship in creative production? Can fan fiction work if your NFT confers an opportunity for you to expand on a storyline? Interpret or change art according to a new aesthetic within moderation parameters?

IP Owners can maintain their core rights, and if an NFT buyer is in breach of parts of the smart contract, permissions can be revoked. While this new complexity presents challenges, the financial upsides to exploring these parameters between audiences and IP is new territory emerging when existing media platforms are increasingly set in their ways.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and their broad permissions to NFT purchasers that allow the development and adaptation of their NFT “Apes” has created an environment built for transformative works, and with enough clarity around agreements that individual NFT owners are able to establish licensing relationships on their own, with the consent of the BAYC per the smart contract in their NFT.

Jenkins The Valet the book, is an NFT project in and of itself, called the “Writer’s Room,” where individuals have bought NFTs that provide the opportunity to vote on the title, genre, and plot of a community generative book written in partnership with a “world-renowned author,” according to CAA. The 6,942 NFTs sold out in six minutes, grossing more than $1.5 Million in ETH. How many of these buyers plan to contribute to the authorship of the work, or would potentially have claim on downstream licenses from the work is an open question, and a compelling one.

Talent agencies are representing NFT owners and their collections, CAA has signed the NFT collector, 0xb1, whose collection of NFTs includes characters from a variety of NFT community storyworlds including Apes, Cool Cats, and Spunks by Spongenuity. In essence, fractions of NFT storyworlds that can enter into agreements directly. With Timbaland and Universal Music Groups announcing licensing agreements around NFT based characters as described in part 5, it’s clear that telling stories and building projects based on owned NFTs is a workable model for big budget projects with early movers excited to enter the market.

What does this mean for IP Owners with more traditional views of licensing and story world controls? The opportunity to engage audiences as NFT purchasers is not an all-or-nothing proposition. The same way established brands have considered User Generated Content (UGC), or fan fiction portals, smart contracts can include broad license and permissions or more limited permissions that can be added to or revoked. Watching as large IP holders with community-driven platforms like Webtoon and Wattpad, NFT smart contract systems provide a clear methodology to managing these increasingly complex opportunities in ways that can benefit IP owners and fans who want to create work in a story world.

While these projects won’t launch overnight for established brands and franchises, these are the questions being asked to determine the next wave of audience relationships:

• Where are areas of my story world where audiences could create stories or play with characters to explore in this narrative?

• What experience lends itself to this exploration best in the franchise at hand? Is a sandbox or RPG style experience a way to close off an era of story that fans can enjoy?

• What are ways that audiences are already exploring your world (online role play, fan art or fan fiction (fic), etc…), and is there a way to enhance or amplify that fan experience without being overbearing?

These new campaigns, initiatives, or experiences could emerge as walled-garden storylines for audiences to play in, stand-alone games inside sprawling story worlds, or simply giving fans opportunities to monetize transformative works on controlled platforms.

NFTs offer substantial new potential for artists to be recognized, sustain their pursuits financially, and IP owners to build goodwill with fans who love their stories.

Part 7: Where Will NFTs Take Your Storyworld?

Franchise owners haven’t had an easy opportunity to create direct agreements with audience members at scale … until NFT smart contracts emerged. While an automated copyright review service can trigger microtransactions instead of take-downs if an IP Owner has opted-in on a platform, chasing fan behavior and granting permissions after the fact to healthy uses of content by fans is a huge allocation of time for franchises. Brands have been looking for ways to reasonably participate in fan co-creation that celebrates audiences’ love for their story worlds while protecting intellectual property rights for decades. No one wants to be the brand that breaks someone’s heart with a cease and desist when they could be increasing shareholder value by letting fans to share their love, build word of mouth and create earned media moments.

As NFT-based productions enter the marketplace in the next 12 months, they’re going to transform relationships of franchises with audiences – as substantially as social media did in the 2000s. NFT’s superpower is that they are not only a way to distribute and monetize assets, but they’re also creating a contract with the buyer… a contract that can establish a huge variety of usage parameters while still maintaining the seller’s ownership of related intellectual property. One of the biggest questions in franchise storytelling has always been – how can we connect with fans, and give them the opportunity to participate in the stories they love, while protecting the commercial needs of a production’s owners. With the ability to establish the rules of the road for IP ownership and usage, fans can take a turn at the driver’s seat on content distribution with everyone in the value chain enjoying the ride. TL:DR: What are the major points you need to start a conversation with your creative collaborators, business colleagues, or potential clients? The basics: An NFT is:

• A Piece of Art: any digital asset (like a .jpg or .mp4),

  that is

• Part of an agreement (a smart contract)

  and is

•  Recorded on a public system (a distributed leger) 

Here are the opportunities:

Franchises and brands are looking at their archives and collectables in a new way and finding new revenue sources.

• The bottom line for marketing experiences, consumer products, and events include monetization and long-tail revenue.

• Play-to-Earn Games & Customization means players have a stake in a project’s success.

• Audiences are increasingly engaging with NFT communities because they are empowered to participate in the ongoing revenue streams from these projects.

• Original Intellectual Properties are looking at NFTs to create communities and buzz, fundraising opportunities, early marketing, and licensing.

• Established IP and brands can create exciting new experiences with audiences beyond simple collectibles.

• The direct smart contracts that NFTs contain are inspiring new models for authorship, licensing, and monetizing transformative works.

The most exciting aspect of this new ecosystem is that these opportunities are going to affect, and be answered with the creation of thousands of new experiments. The potential to use NFTs to connect, customize, integrate and personalize experiences are vast. As spring moves to summer, our hearts move towards summer reading lists about space and the supernatural! I strongly recommend some new titles by friends, colleagues and frenemies of mine: Suburban Dicks by Fabian Nicieza, Megastructure: A Military Sci-Fi Series the first volume of Jon Frater’s new series, The Miriam Black series by Chuck Wendig whose 5th book dropped recently, The Raptor & The Wren. It’s hard to even begin to explain why removing humans from these loops is a step that should worry you. I’ll try an analogy - Imagine Donald Trump with an army of killer robots and no need for the Pentagon. The campaign to stop killer robots is a pretty great resource on ways you may be able to add your voice to this issue, but the cat is out of the bag.

Someone built a volcano lair off Yemen and no countries are admitting who it is.

If you’ve ever spoken to me drunk, you know I’ve always wanted a Volcano lair, and have very strong opinions about lava features in interior design. That said, the ongoing horrific tragedies in Yemen are still a thing and this random unattributed airbase is just par for the course of “no one is paying attention” to Yemen.

In science news, Tardigrades can survive being shot out of a gun, but probably didn’t survive crashing on the moon.

While we’re all holding out hope that the Israeli water bears that crashed onto the moon were now creating a colony, recent experiments in the amount of impact tardigrades could survive indicate that they probably are not building tiny lunar bases. BUT, if you shoot a tardigrade in a bullet into someone, the tardigrade is more likely to survive than that person. CSI writers take note.
