For the last year and a half, Mark Carney has made concession after concession to Trump. He quietly dropped most of the counter-tariffs against the U.S. He agreed to raise military spending to Trump’s target of five per cent of GDP. He bent the knee on the Gordie Howe International Bridge and then tried to lie about it.

None of these capitulations stopped Trump from announcing his latest round of 50 per cent tariffs. In the ensuing negotiations, it became an open secret that Carney was once again prepared to give a lot for little in return.

According to inside sources, Carney was ready to drop all of its counter-tariffs; to return U.S. booze to store shelves; to modify supply management policies to make more room for American dairy; as well as complete the $88-billion purchase of American fighter jets; give the U.S. first pick over its critical minerals; and opt into Trump’s Golden Dome continental missile program.

In exchange, the U.S. would cancel the planned 50 per cent tariffs but only lower the existing tariffs against autos, steel, aluminum, and lumber. Negotiations around the CUSMA free trade agreement would also be re-opened.

While the press mused about the deal being a tough sell for Carney, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew reported that Carney had begged him to return U.S. alcohol to liquor store shelves.

In the end, the Americans made last-minute demands that would have been utterly humiliating for Mr. Elbows Up to accept. Namely: modifications to tariffs on Canadian autos and limits on Canada’s ability to make free trade deals with other countries. Apparently they also demanded the relaxation of laws requiring French language on packaging sold in Canada as well as laws protecting Canadian cultural content.

Carney has since announced he will be retaliating with tariffs of his own.

My boss stole my wages, now my coworkers and I are fighting back

The following is a submission from a member of the RCP in Edmonton, who is organizing with their comrades and coworkers a picket to recover stolen wages from their boss. I worked for the Better Baker on Whyte Ave in Edmonton, for about 5 months. I started back in August 2025 when I had just turned 18. The owner, Vinny, was extremely unprofessional and consistently late with paycheques. So much so that some months, he would just “forget” to pay me. It was my first job out of high school so I let a lot of these things slide out of naivete.

It came to the point where I couldn’t cover my portion of rent and bills on time. I was struggling with monthly expenses already, but since he was late with my wages I also had to pay late fees. I finally had to walk. It was costing me more to keep the job and I couldn’t do it anymore.

After I quit, I would reach out to Vinny frequently to ask for my paystubs, paycheques, vacation pay, and my Record of Employment. He would reply very passive aggressively or not at all. The more I asked, the less he kept replying. Finally, I filed an employment standards complaint.

This was a painstaking and stressful process. After spending a lot of time jumping through a lot of hoops, I got some sort of help from them, but Vinny has just been ignoring the labour board. My $2,904.10 is still waiting to be approved by a collections officer. I’ve been waiting for what I’m owed for over 8 months.

There are many elements of this issue that have angered me but the one that takes the cake is the double standard of theft on rich versus poor people. When you steal money or product from a large corporation or a wealthy person you are prosecuted immediately. Police are involved and justice is brought to the rich in the most efficient time. Dealing with this experience I’ve been extremely disheartened to see the amount of bureaucracy that a worker has to go through in order to get what is rightfully theirs. This shows the horrific dichotomy between the ruling and working class and how laws are applied and enforced. I had to go through five months worth of hours, e-transfers, bank statements, and text messages to give enough proof for a claim to be made. This being my first job, I had very little knowledge as to how these things worked, it was easy to feel discouraged and I could understand why people may choose to just let these things go, almost as if that’s the intent with these processes in the first place. It is clear the only way to get justice for the workers is to make our presence known and take to the streets.

With the demand of my money in my last messages to Vinny, I also mentioned how I would not hesitate to picket if it meant getting paid quicker. Vinny has threatened me with police if I chose to speak out publicly. I was of course scared to do anything, until I got in contact with several other former employees who all experienced similar issues. Within conversations with these individuals we all realized an appalling pattern. More than half of us involved were under the age of 21 and all started at the Better Baker either fresh out of high school or as broke university students. Vinny clearly hired the people that were in the most vulnerable positions and knew exactly how to exploit and milk them until they left.

Me and my coworkers decided to create an Instagram page demanding our money and exposing him. Vinny just blocked us and brushed us off as a “fake account with fake documents”. But through this Instagram page we’ve received tons of support and even got more former employees reaching out and vouching for our stories. Since the creation of the account (August 20th) the pressure has made Vinny pay 1/6 employees.

The bakery is going viral right now because an influencer allegedly “bullied” him for cultural appropriation. We thought with all the attention he’s getting it would be a good time to ride the wave and call him out. Me, my coworkers, and my comrades from the RCP will be protesting at the bakery this Saturday, August 29th starting at 8:45 AM. We’ll be at 10324 Whyte Ave in the alley across the farmers market picketing the business, asking people to boycott the Better Baker until we are paid what we are owed.

In total this guy still owes $8,000+ amongst the 5 former employees (including myself) in unpaid wages and vacation pay. Until we are paid, we are going to be telling everyone walking into the bakery what kind of an operation Vinny is running.

The situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is on a knife edge. The mass movement, which was forged over the last three years and which has now reached revolutionary proportions, is on the move. As it has grown in size, so have its demands. By such actions, it has thrown down the gauntlet to the Kashmiri authorities and the Pakistan government.

Amazon desperate to crush union at B.C. warehouse

Eight hundred workers at an Amazon warehouse in Delta, B.C. are fighting to defend their union. While there have been other attempts to unionize at Amazon, workers at Delta could be the first to actually force Amazon into a collective agreement. Of course, the $2.5-trillion company is doing everything it can to stop them. Their latest move is a decertification campaign.

There, they will attend a summit where Mark Carney will pitch “Canada, Inc.” to them in a bid to rustle up $500 billion in investment for major projects and reverse the catastrophic outflow of capital that Canada has experienced in the recent period.

Capitalism has plunged the world into its deepest crisis in living memory. Billions face skyrocketing costs and austerity, while the ruling class crowns its first trillionaire. The so-called “rules-based international order” is dead: the imperialist vultures arm to the teeth, fighting bitter battles over markets, unconcerned by the bloody destruction left in their wake. Meanwhile, the relentless pursuit of profit is destroying the environment—and putting the very existence of humanity itself into question.

But the billionaires won’t get the last word. In just a few years, mass movements have erupted in more than a dozen countries: from Nepal to Kenya, from Serbia to Bangladesh, from France to Italy. Even the US—the belly of the beast of world capitalism—isn’t safe, as the Minneapolis uprising shows.

The pattern is clear: we have entered an epoch of revolutions. Millions of ordinary people have begun to question the system and are striving to take their fate into their own hands.

And yet, these revolutions have failed to solve any of the fundamental problems of society. That’s because, heroic and inspiring as they are, they have failed to destroy the root cause: capitalism itself.

As the crisis deepens, broader and more powerful revolutionary movements are inevitable—even in Canada. This raises burning questions: How can the working class end capitalism? What ideas and organizations are necessary? What role should communists play?

The housing crisis seems to have no end in sight. While Mark Carney promised he would solve it, housing starts have fallen and now he is bailing out condo developers. Paradoxically, the government has made it clear that they in fact don’t want prices to fall.

Housing minister Gregor Robertson, when asked if he wanted housing prices to come down, said, “No. I think that we need to deliver more supply, make sure the market is stable. It’s a huge part of our economy.” Justifying the condo bailout, Carney explained that developers “don’t want to sell at a loss.”

In a recent report, the CIBC summed up the situation when they explained that, “Prices are still too high to buy and not high enough to build.” The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) therefore projects housing starts to fall from 259,000 in 2025 to 247,000 this year, 223,000 in 2027 and 216,000 in 2028. This is in spite of the fact that Carney promised to construct 500,000 new homes per year.

This strange situation is due to the fact that the Canadian ruling class is addicted to the housing market and doesn’t want to bring the gravy train to a halt. They are desperately trying to keep the housing bubble inflated, because if it burst it would send the entire economy into a tailspin.

A sorry end to the B.C. nurses’ strike

With the strongest mandate in their history, B.C. nurses went on strike for the first time in a generation. Faced with ER closures, thousands of nursing positions left vacant, and patients being treated in hospital hallways, this was a fight that went beyond wages and benefits.

Everything was in the nurses’ favour. They were striking in the middle of the World Cup for maximum impact, public support was high, and every major union had declared their support. The bosses knew what kind of threat the nurses posed, as the more than 1,400 reports of intimidation against the nurses can attest to. Still, not even the risk of losing their licenses could bring down the nurses’ fighting spirit.

But suddenly, on July 14, the union executives pulled the picket lines down. Then, just ten days later, they ended the strike entirely—all without a vote from their membership. Shortly after, they revealed the real reason for ending the strike: behind closed doors, they had agreed to submit the nurses’ contract to binding arbitration.

Mobilization against data centre in Sherbrooke

In early July, the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, voted in favor of a preliminary agreement with Keel Infrastructure for a new AI data centre. Very little information has been made available about the $1.8 billion project. Residents concerned about the project’s impact launched a petition that gathered more than 5,000 signatures in one week.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has released his “AI for All” strategy, in an attempt to convince ordinary people that implementing AI will benefit them.

With the AI arms race underway, Carney is clearly worried Canada will be left behind. His strategy talks about increasing “Canada’s business adoption of AI from 12 per cent today to 60 per cent by 2034” and about “the unlocking of a three per cent increase in GDP… from labour productivity.” It also proposes to build “sovereign AI infrastructure”—a fancy way of talking about building data centres here.

But this AI push has a problem: massive opposition to AI across Canada. A 2023 poll showed that half of Canadians perceive AI as a threat to humanity, and 79 per cent worry about AI replacing jobs. Trust in AI amongst Canadians is one of the lowest in the world.

In reality, this strategy is not much more than a PR operation for an industry that is hated by most people—and understandably so.

Liberals fast-track Big Brother spying bill

On June 18, the House of Commons passed Bill C-22, formally called the Lawful Access Act, bypassing any further debate. The controversial bill has been criticized by privacy experts, civil rights lawyers, and tech companies for its far-reaching powers, secret orders, and shadowy rules. The bill is now headed to the Senate. If it passes, it will represent a massive expansion of the state’s spying powers, and will no doubt be used to crack down on protests, strikes, and Indigenous land defenders.

WestJet flight attendants must learn from Air Canada

Over 4,000 WestJet flight attendants have voted overwhelmingly to strike. On July 14, 2026, CUPE Local 8125 announced a strike vote of 99.4 per cent, with a 97 per cent turnout. A strike could come as early as Aug. 2, almost a year after Air Canada flight attendants defied a federal back-to-work order for the exact same reasons—unpaid work and low wages.

Less than a month after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that seemingly ended the war between the US and Iran, hostilities have recommenced. This time, US imperialism is dragging the whole world towards a precipice.

The agreement has seemed to teeter on the brink of collapse from day one. Netanyahu systematically attempted to bring the agreement down through provocations in Lebanon. But in the end, Trump himself collapsed it.

The latest pattern of escalation began on 7 July. Iranian drones allegedly hit three vessels travelling through the Omani rather than the Iranian route through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians claim that even those travelling through the Omani route must gain Iranian approval to transit.

The Americans took a contrary view, and responded by reimposing sanctions on Iranian oil and by bombing Iranian naval vessels. The Iranians responded by hitting American bases and headquarters in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. And, in turn, the Americans have hit targets all over Iran, including IRGC targets, ballistic missile targets, and infrastructure including, provocatively, the bridge from Mashad on the day that Ali Khamenei’s remains were laid to rest in that city.

Trump lashed out at the Iranians as “scum” and “sick people”. The ceasefire is over, the war is back on.

On Thursday evening, Mark Carney and Danielle Smith held a press conference where they announced, at long last, that a company had been found to build a new pipeline from Alberta to BC’s Pacific coast.

The announcement followed the signing of a “Memorandum of Understanding” between Carney and Smith in November of last year, the main point of which was an agreement to approve the Alberta-proposed pipeline so long as certain conditions were met. However, no company had come forward offering to build it at the time.

Now, to many people’s surprise, the project has been handed over to the state-owned Trans Mountain Corporation—surprising because, until now, both Carney and Smith had insisted that the new line would be built by a “private sector proponent.” Instead, as with the first Trans Mountain pipeline, the government has once again stepped in to pick up the slack—and at a potentially great cost to the Canadian taxpayer.

In fact, the eventual involvement of the federal government was all too predictable (and in fact was predicted in our articles). Alberta’s oil barons had long since signalled that they saw no business case in building a new pipeline as proposed by Smith. In May, Enbridge’s CEO stated it plainly: “Enbridge is not a proponent of this pipeline. And frankly, nobody is at this point in time as the conditions just don’t exist to commercialize such a proposal.”

The private sector worried that a new pipeline could meet the same fate as other past projects, including the cancelled Northern Gateway pipeline—an outcome that would prove catastrophic to their balance sheets. The public sector remained the only proponent capable of absorbing the risk. In his own statement in May, Trans Mountain’s CEO hinted that the federal government “know[s] very well that we’re here and what we’re capable of doing.”

Government attacks right to strike—prepare for class war!

The Canadian ruling class is preparing a comprehensive overhaul of the Canadian Labour Code. This represents a full-frontal assault on the right to strike.

Two different reports—one from the federal government, and one from the Senate—have called on Parliament to further restrict or even remove the right to strike for workers in federally regulated sectors. This should serve as a warning to the labour movement.

The School of Revolutions in Edmonton!

We have entered an epoch of revolutions. In the past few years, revolutions and mass movements have erupted in more than 10 countries. From Nepal to Kenya, Serbia to Bangladesh, ordinary people are taking their fate in their own hands, and trying to find a way out of the crisis of capitalism.

Despite tremendous efforts, these revolutions have not solved any of the fundamental problems of the masses. Many have stalled, and some have even taken steps backwards. This is because these revolutions left the root problem – capitalism – in place.

With capitalism in its deepest ever crisis, more and more revolutions are inevitable across the world, even in countries like Canada. This raises vital questions: what role can we play in the revolutionary process? How can the energy of the working class be channelled toward ending capitalism? What theory and organization do we need to get there?

The purpose of this Communist Summer School is to answer these questions. To do this, we will analyze past revolutions – a rich source of lessons for how revolutions can win today – as well as Marxist theory, the guide to revolutionary action.

The Revolutionary Communist Party is working to arm all those who hate capitalism with the knowledge and skills to fight for their class, and work towards the overthrow of capitalism. At this moment in history, nothing serves this purpose better than a study of revolutions.

Faced with unbearable pressure from US imperialism, during an extraordinary session on 18 June, the Cuban National Assembly adopted a series of economic proposals. If implemented, these proposals will lead directly to the restoration of capitalism.

On Friday 12 June, at a morning press conference, President Díaz-Canel announced far-reaching economic reforms. On Wednesday 17 June, the plenary session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) met and, with unprecedented speed, the following day the National Assembly of People’s Power approved no fewer than 176 measures. Taken as a whole, these measures, if implemented, spell the end of the planned economy and the restoration of capitalism.

There is no other way to analyse the decisions taken. This is not a matter of a few reforms, nor of a partial opening up to the market. We are talking about nothing less than the complete restoration of a capitalist market economy in Cuba. A qualitative leap, not merely a quantitative one. And this will have very serious and historic consequences.

Canadian press calls Montreal shooter a ‘revolutionary communist’—he wasn’t

Montreal was rocked Monday as a shooter opened fire in its Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. Three were left dead, including the shooter. Canada’s right-wing mouthpieces were quick to label the attack as being fuelled by left wing ideology or antisemitism—or both.

B.C. condo developers handed $3.2b bailout: Expropriate the parasites!

Flanked by towers of unsold million-dollar condos, Mark Carney and David Eby announced that the architects of B.C.’s housing crisis would be given $3.2 billion, buying up their unsold condo stock. This mirrors a similar bailout given in Ontario by the Doug Ford Conservatives.

In Vancouver, workers spend 60 per cent of their incomes on rent, and condos range anywhere from $800,000 to well over $1 million. Needless to say, this is completely unaffordable. Even B.C.’s largest developers’ association recognizes this, confessing, “we no longer build what people can afford.” As one mortgage broker put it, “They minted money like robber barons… for 20 years they reaped the benefits of their sales and kept pushing prices upwards endlessly, and made fortunes.”

Government debt: a ticking time bomb

Mark Carney is trying to spend his way out of the capitalist crisis. The government debt is ballooning out of control. But this won't save the system and the ruling class will force working-class people to pay for this bloated debt through cuts to social services.

This 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the US and Iran represents a humiliation for Trump, a strategic defeat for US imperialism, and a turning point in the world situation. For the Israelis – who were not consulted and are not signatories to an agreement that is, nevertheless, binding on them – the implications are potentially even graver.

Desperate men are prone to desperate measures. As these lines are being written, Netanyahu is bombing Lebanon in a transparent attempt to collapse this agreement. There are those in the neocon establishment in the US who would be egging him on.

The latest news is that Israel’s arm has been twisted into signing a ceasefire with Hezbollah. While things remain tentative, we can say this: there is no better deal out there for Trump. Although these are terms of surrender, they are the best US imperialism can hope for!

Montreal police rocked by racism scandal

On Friday, June 12, in an unprecedented move, Montreal police (SPVM) officials announced the dismantling of an entire night patrol unit: two officers were suspended, and 14 other members of the 39th Precinct in Montréal-Nord were reassigned.

The limited information that has been released is damning: the officers allegedly encouraged and coordinated with one another to racially profile Black and Arab people. They went so far as to collect locks of hair from their targets—dreadlocks—as if they were war trophies.

SPVM Director Fady Dagher says he is “very surprised.” It’s just a few bad apples, an isolated case, something “unprecedented.” But no one is fooled. In reality, what the SPVM has been forced to disclose is merely the tip of a hideous iceberg.

Bending to pressure from mining and oil and gas corporations, this bill backs away from stating that First Nations people have the right to clean drinking water. The World Cup has come to Canada! Scandalously, ticket prices make attending a match out of reach for most Canadians. This is in spite of the fact that the government paid well over $1 billion to host the games in Vancouver and Toronto. On Oct. 19, Albertans will participate in a referendum to decide whether to have a referendum on separation. This confusing question has infuriated both hardline separatists and staunch federalists.

FIFA World Cup 2026:Capitalism is ruining sports

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.A. from June 11 to July 19. While millions of people from the host countries and across the world want to attend the tournament, exorbitant ticket prices prevent them from doing so. Worse still, the entire public is being saddled with the billions of dollars in costs for hosting the tournament, while all the profits go to FIFA. Instead of a celebration of the game, the World Cup has turned into a party for the rich.

EHSAN ALI RELEASED! A victory for international solidarity!

After three torturous months in captivity, Ehsan Ali – Chairman of the Awami Action Committee Gilgit-Baltistan (AAC-GB), and a leading comrade of the Inqalabi Communist Party (RCP) – is a free man! This is a huge victory for international solidarity, which would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of workers, labour leaders and radical youth all over the world.

Since his arrest on 10 March on trumped-up terrorism charges for the ‘crime’ of attending an iftar dinner and discussing peaceful protest, Ehsan Ali has endured horrific conditions in prison. Just like during his previous arrest in 2025, the authorities pressured him to confess to all manner of scandalous lies, while threatening his relatives and comrades into denouncing him.

He was denied proper medical care, and a senior police officer in Gilgit-Baltistan admitted there were orders “from above” to “let him die.” But in defiance of his captors, he endured this ordeal with courage and fortitude, refusing to capitulate. He leaves jail today alive and well, ready to continue his lifelong struggle to defend the poor and exploited people of the region.

His release comes days after farcical elections in Gilgit-Baltistan. The timing of his imprisonment was likely no accident. The authorities wanted to keep the main leader of the AAC off the streets during this so-called democratic process, which has installed even more supplicant toadies of Islamabad in the Assembly in Gilgit. They will continue to facilitate the looting of this rich and fertile region.

This escalation of our campaign comes at a vital time. The authorities have launched a widespread crackdown on dissent in the run up to June 7 elections in Gilgit-Baltistan. Just last week, as part of these attempts to silence the democratic rights of the people of the region, three more supporters of the Awami Action Committee were arrested.

It is evident that the Pakistani state aims to silence and intimidate any voices speaking out against the plunder and suppression of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, while carrying out sham elections that will have nothing to do with their will or interests.

We are proud to publish the final version of our 2026 perspectives document, which provides an overview of the key processes shaping the course of the class struggle in Canada, with the aim of guiding the actions of revolutionaries in the coming period. It is the result of several months of debate across the cells of the Revolutionary Communist Party, culminating in its adoption at the party Congress held on the weekend of May 16–17.

This well-known quote from Lenin aptly captures the period we are living through. Compacted into a short period of time, a flood of shocking events has transpired, drastically upending the old world order.

After cracking at the seams, the U.S.-led international order is now dead. The year 2026, which opened with the kidnapping of Maduro and Trump’s renewed threats to take over Greenland, put the last nail in the coffin. The death of the old world order is now an inescapable fact, as is now being openly admitted by world leaders.

As Carney said in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, “We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy.” The Munich Security Conference this year also echoed this, stating, “more than 80 years after construction began, the U.S.-led post-1945 international order is now under destruction.”

But what new order will take its place? And what place will Canada take in it?

As Alberta prepares for a referendum (on whether to hold a referendum) on seceding from Canada, the infamous Clarity Act is back in the spotlight.

The federal government has so far rejected the possibility of applying it to the Alberta referendum. Nevertheless, the referendum has brought renewed attention to the fundamentally anti-democratic nature of the law, while exposing the untenable contradictions within the Canadian federal system.

The economic consequences of the war in Iran

The rising conflict between the major imperialist powers over the world markets is ending a process of lowering trade barriers that lasted for decades. This will not just have a short-term impact on prices. Rather than having one big manufacturing plant that can export to the whole world, companies will be forced to invest in many smaller, less efficient production sites, to circumvent trade barriers of all kinds. This will lower productivity and raise prices. It will mean persistently higher inflation that will force workers to fight harder to maintain their living standards.

Such was already the situation back in February—a very unstable, fragile situation. Trump, however, has a way of making us all forget about his past adventures as he embarks on new ones. Nonetheless, they all play a role in the crisis that is now unfolding. Prior to the Iran War, the world economy was not in a healthy state. On the contrary, all it needed was a good push, and Trump might have given it just that.

Britain in crisis

Britain is in a deep crisis. The economy has declined and living conditions are deteriorating. The political landscape has polarized to the right and left as voters look for solutions outside the establishment parties. Canada's future can be seen in Britain.

This week, Joel is joined by Ben Curry of the International Secretariat of the Revolutionary Communist International to discuss the crisis in Britain and what Canadian revolutionaries can learn to prepare for similar developments in Canada.

In Toronto during the long weekend of May 16–18, the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) held its third annual congress. Taking place at a time of immense turmoil, the 437 participants discussed the depth of the capitalist crisis and the necessity of building a party up to the task posed by history.

The hall buzzed with excitement and conversation for the three days of the congress, reflecting the fact that the RCP grew from 716 to 890 members in the last year. As Hélène Bissonnette from the Executive Committee said, “I feel like I’m facing a party I know very well, but also a brand new party.” With dozens of new members building new party cells all over the country, the future bodes well for the forces of communism in Canada!

The working class response to Smith’s referendum

On May 22, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that there will be a fall referendum on (whether or not to pursue a binding referendum on) Alberta separating from Canada. This might seem strange on the surface, but Danielle Smith is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

For her entire tenure, she has presided over an unholy marriage of two distinct parties within the “United” Conservative Party (UCP). If not contained, the infighting within the UCP threatens Danielle Smith’s own job, or even a fracturing of the party itself. Smith is desperate to avoid both of these fates, and this convoluted referendum is her attempt to hold everything together.

Unfortunately for Smith, it hasn’t worked. Smith is trying to balance on a tightrope between separatists who want independence, and oil barons who want stability. But the question she’s putting to a vote just made everyone angrier.

A Florida federal prosecutor has indicted the Cuban Revolution leader Raúl Castro with charges of conspiracy to kill US citizens and murder. This is a very dangerous escalation of the Trump-Rubio campaign to smash the Cuban Revolution and must be strongly repudiated by the working class movement internationally. The Revolutionary Communist International rejects this stepping up of US aggression against Cuba. We stand unconditionally for the defence of the Cuban Revolution.

China sets the agenda at the Xi-Trump summit

Concretely speaking, little or nothing was achieved at the ‘G2’ summit between China and America last week. No shift from China on Iran, no shift on tariffs, no shift on rare earths, nor on Taiwan. But in the relations of imperialist powers, the intangibles of prestige and appearance can be decisive, just as between two sets of gangsters trying to call each other’s bluff.

In this respect, the summit was a Chinese success. It left a general impression of an unmoved Chinese leadership receiving a petitioner desperate for help. The Chinese not only agreed to change nothing of importance, they also said nothing besides some words of warning regarding Taiwan, and did not have to. That was the point. Trump, on the other hand, said a lot, and in doing so gave off a general air of both desperation and awe at his hosts.

Nine years ago, when Trump last had a state visit to China, Beijing strove to assert and convince that it was a great power of similar standing to the US. This time, it had no need to do anything of the sort. Instead, it let Trump say it for them, as he did on multiple occasions, declaring Xi Jinping an incredibly powerful and impressive leader, and China a ‘partner’ with whom the US hoped to have a ‘beautiful’ relationship.

As if to presage the character of the summit, Marco Rubio decided to fly to China in an identical tracksuit to that worn by Maduro when he was flown in handcuffs to meet his new masters in New York. He obviously thought this underlined his own power by reliving the glory days of the US raid in Caracas five months ago. But it only served to remind everyone of how long ago that now seems in the wake of Trump’s colossal blunder in Iran. Thanks to that blunder, it was now Trump and Rubio in a weakened position who were flying to meet a powerful president; thus, the tracksuit was more apt than Rubio realised.

If anyone thought that US imperialism’s embarrassment in Iran would deter it from its escalating campaign of aggression against the Cuban Revolution, they were very mistaken. On several occasions, President Trump has indicated that he would “deal” with Cuba after he was finished with Iran. Since the 29 January executive order imposing an oil blockade on the island, Washington has continued to increase the pressure.

On 14 May, CIA Director John Ratcliffe travelled to Cuba to deliver a clear message: submit, or else. While there was no official US readout of the meeting (the CIA published pictures on its social media), unnamed officials briefed Axios, which has become Washington’s favourite conduit for signals and disinformation, that “Ratcliffe urged the Cuban officials to take a lesson from the Jan. 3 operation that toppled Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela” – a clear threat, straight from the Vito Corleone school of diplomacy.

John Reed, the author of Ten Days that Shook the World, once said that Lenin was the most loved and the most hated person alive. He was loved by tens of millions who wanted to change society, but hated by the ruling class and their apologists.

The life of monopolistic capitalism in our time is a chain of crises. Each crisis is a catastrophe. The need of salvation from these partial catastrophes by means of tariff walls, inflation, increase of government spending and debts lays the ground for additional, deeper and more widespread crises. The struggle for markets, for raw material, for colonies makes military catastrophes unavoidable. All in all, they prepare revolutionary catastrophes. Truly, it is not easy to agree with Sombart that aging capitalism becomes increasingly ‘calm, sedate and reasonable.’ It would be more apt to say that it is losing its last vestiges of reason.

So wrote Trotsky in 1939, a few months before the outbreak of World War II. From those years of chaos and madness emerged a new world order, dominated by the American empire. Today, as this world order crumbles before our eyes, these remarks once again apply perfectly to the times. As then, it seems that capitalism “is losing its last vestiges of reason.”

Israel’s ‘Gazafication’ of Lebanon

Israel is subjecting Lebanon to a campaign of ‘Gazafication’ – systematically levelling villages, displacing populations and targeting journalists and medical staff – under the pretext of ‘fighting Hezbollah’. Their intention is clearly to prevent any ceasefire between the US and the Iranians, and to seize Lebanese territory by force of arms while much of the media’s attention is focused on Iran.

Just three days into the conflict with Iran, Israel intensified its military operations in Lebanon, ongoing since 2023, by launching another ground invasion into the south of the country. This was combined with a heavy air assault nationwide, including in the capital, Beirut. The current death toll stands at over 2,500 (not including the many uncountable bodies under rubble), while 1.2 million people, a fifth of the country’s population, have been displaced.

How the RCMP spied on the Indigenous rights movement

A recent investigation by CBC journalists has dug up thousands of RCMP files from the 1960s and 1970s, exposing a widespread program of surveillance and infiltration called the “Native extremism” program. Part of the RCMP’s Security Service, it was designed to gather “racial intelligence” (a term borrowed from the FBI’s COINTELPRO) to prevent “violence” or “extreme acts” by Indigenous people.

In reality, this program was an attempt by the state to undermine Indigenous peoples’ ability to organize for democratic rights and self-determination—using means both ridiculous and illegal, usually at the same time.

We have entered an epoch of revolutions. In the past few years, revolutions and mass movements have erupted in more than 10 countries. From Nepal to Kenya, Serbia to Bangladesh, ordinary people are taking their fate in their own hands, and trying to find a way out of the crisis of capitalism.

Despite tremendous efforts, these revolutions have not solved any of the fundamental problems of the masses. Many have stalled, and some have even taken steps backwards. This is because these revolutions left the root problem – capitalism – in place.

With capitalism in its deepest ever crisis, more and more revolutions are inevitable across the world, even in countries like Canada. This raises vital questions: what role can we play in the revolutionary process? How can the energy of the working class be channelled toward ending capitalism? What theory and organization do we need to get there?

The purpose of this Communist Summer School is to answer these questions. To do this, we will analyze past revolutions – a rich source of lessons for how revolutions can win today – as well as Marxist theory, the guide to revolutionary action.

The idea of publicly owned grocery stores is having a moment.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani first drew attention to the concept last year with his proposal to establish a network of city-owned grocery stores. In March, Toronto followed suit by approving a pilot project to create four city-run stores of its own. The NDP’s new leader Avi Lewis has gone further—promising a national network of publicly-owned outlets.

The motive behind these moves is not hard to understand. In early 2026, food inflation in Canada topped seven per cent—the highest rate of increase for G7 countries. Food bank usage is at record highs nationwide.

Meanwhile, the five grocery giants that dominate Canada’s market are universally loathed. Loblaw Chairman Galen Weston Jr. is one of Canada’s most hated men. Millions go hungry while the tycoons profit.

In this difficult environment, the notion of a public grocer that could slash prices has struck a chord. But will the concept as proposed by Mamdani, Lewis and others actually work?

‘Team Canada’ hypocrisy all over again

While Carney says this is a “diverse group”, it is clearly a group of corporate elites, representing the Canadian capitalist class. Of the 24 members, nine are CEOs, two bankers and six represent major employer associations.

Apparently, these people are supposed to represent “us”. Minister Dominic LeBlanc presented things as a case of “governments, workers, businesses, and industry leaders pull[ing] in the same direction.” Carney says his committee allows the government to draw on “the broadest perspectives”.

But just one look at the resume of some of these people shows what a sham this is.

Can Carney’s ‘defence industrial strategy’ revive the economy?

In late February, the federal government announced its new “defence industrial strategy.” This strategy presents the massive increase in military spending as economic policy with the aim of reviving the Canadian economy. The government claims this will trigger $300 billion in private investment and create “125,000 high-paying careers.”

This plan has been welcomed by the ruling class with open arms. The Business Council of Canada called the defence industrial strategy “an important step towards strengthening Canada’s security and economic resilience amid rising geopolitical uncertainty.” The Globe and Mail claims the plan will “jump-start private investment” and could even create a “golden age of reindustrialization.”

But will this plan create a “golden age of reindustrialization” with “125,000 high-paying careers”?

RCP Third Congress fundraising campaign: $240,000 to build Communist Revolution

We are living through the most turbulent period in history. As the American empire declines, led by a decadent and senile ruling class—the so-called “Epstein class”—it is dragging the world into the abyss. This fall is provoking wars, trade wars and all manners of horrors in its wake. Meanwhile, from the Minneapolis general strike to the Gen Z revolutions, a revolutionary consciousness is being born among the masses around the world.

This consciousness will express itself one day or another in revolutionary explosions. We are building the Revolutionary Communist Party with the aim of bringing this coming revolution to victory and putting an end to the sick system of capitalism. To this end, we are urgently building a professional apparatus of full-time revolutionaries.

The winter leg of our 2026 fundraising campaign was a great step towards building this party, raising $260,000 out of our annual goal of $500,000. Thanks to these fundraising efforts, in January we were able to take on the first of our planned three hires for 2026: an organizer to oversee the growing work in Ontario outside of Toronto.

But we have more work to do. In particular, we need to strengthen our paper, Communist Revolution. The ruling class have their media—the whole media—which they use to deceive, demoralize, confuse and keep the workers from organizing in opposition to their rule. We need our own working-class media.

While we have greatly improved our paper’s quality and design in the last few years, we believe Communist Revolution has the potential to advance far, far more. Millions of people across Canada and Quebec are looking for revolutionary ideas.

But this requires more resources. To that end, the goal of our summer fundraiser is to raise $240,000 to finance two hires.

One area we need more resources is in the layout of the paper, which is currently being done by a single staff member. Therefore, the first hire will work on the paper design starting in May. This new hire will in turn help free up our best writers and editors so they can focus on helping us produce even more, and even better, articles.

Another area we can improve is in the use and distribution of the paper. Communist newspapers need to be available in every city, on every campus, in every neighborhood, in every workplace. To this end, we have already hired a new staff member as national paper organizer, dedicated to spreading the paper.

As revolutionary consciousness grows and people look for answers, we need to be there with answers to provide clarity and guidance. Growing our newspaper, as well as the rest of our media presence, is crucial to combat the lies of the Epstein class.

We still have a lot of work to do to get there. But both of these hires are vital to laying the foundation. And we can only afford them, as well as fund the rest of our operations, if we raise $240,000 in this fundraising campaign.

“Total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it.” With these words, Donald Trump described the two-week ceasefire with Iran announced last night.

Just hours prior, Trump had threatened that “an entire civilization will die” – which elicited not a word of criticism from America’s allies. But shortly before his own deadline expired, Trump chickened out before the eyes of the world. He has now, at least in words, agreed to discuss on the basis of a 10-point Iranian proposal, mediated by Pakistan, as a step toward a permanent end to hostilities.

If you believe the White House, the ceasefire is the result of the US having “met and exceeded” all military objectives. Trump is now claiming that a “Golden Age of the Middle East” awaits. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt boasted of the “unbelievable capabilities of our warriors” and credited Trump with having “got the Strait of Hormuz reopened” – the apparent grand prize of the war, never mind that it was open before the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February.

The ceasefire is very fragile and could fall apart at any minute. But whether it holds or not, this is a serious defeat for the US and Trump personally.

The last month has exposed both the limits of Trump’s gunboat diplomacy and of US imperialism in general. The world economy has suffered severe damage, the US’ allies have been systematically alienated, Trump’s base is divided, and now a question mark hangs over the future of US influence in the Middle East.

The Bolsheviks and the Russian Revolution: An introduction

Perhaps no other event in history has stirred as much inspiration and as much vitriol at the same time as the Russian Revolution of 1917.

For the rich and powerful it is a nightmare they can’t forget. That’s why the revolution is so maligned by the powers that be today, from school textbooks to Hollywood movies. They describe 1917 as a coup or a plot, something foisted on the people by the elitist conspiracy of Lenin and his Bolshevik Party.

For revolutionaries, however, it is the greatest event in history. Except for the brief, heroic episode of the Paris Commune of 1871, this was the first time the working class took power into its own hands and began building a socialist society. Thanks to this, Russian society advanced tremendously, going from an undeveloped semi-feudal society to an advanced industrial power in a few decades, lifting tens of millions out of miserable drudgery and backwardness.

Revolutionaries today have much to learn from the Russian Revolution. This history is packed with lessons on the dynamics of revolution, but most importantly, by studying the example of Lenin’s Bolshevik Party, we learn what it takes to win. No party before or since has ever connected so deeply with the class it led, nor led a revolution resulting in such a powerful transformation of society. Studying the Bolsheviks’ role in 1917 is essential to learn what type of party we must build today, and what ideas and tactics we must base ourselves on, so that we can help lead today’s revolutions to victory.

It is imperative that we study the Russian Revolution, and dig it out from under the mountain of slanders it’s been buried under. We can only scratch the surface of this history in a short article, but we hope that it will inspire a much deeper dive into this great event.

Quebec 2012: How a Student Strike Brought Down the Government

In 2012, Quebec students went on a months-long strike to reverse a planned 75 per cent tuition increase. At its height, hundreds of thousands of students refused to attend class, making it one of the largest movements in Canada’s history. It ended with the fall of the provincial government and the cancellation of the tuition hike. Quebec students had fought and won.

Today, post-secondary education is being cut to the bone. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that student funding to help pay for tuition will be changed from being mostly grants to mostly loans—plunging students deeper into debt. Similar cuts have been announced, or are being threatened, in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and B.C.

Given all of this, it’s no surprise that Quebec 2012 is being discussed in English Canada like never before. People want to know how this movement was built, and why was it able to win.

“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

This well-known quote from Lenin aptly captures the period we are living through. Compacted into a short period of time, a flood of shocking events has transpired, drastically upending the old world order.

After cracking at the seams, the U.S. led international order is now dead. The year 2026, which opened with the kidnapping of Maduro and Trump’s renewed threats to take over Greenland, put the last nail in the coffin. The death of the old world order is now an inescapable fact, as is now being openly admitted by world leaders.

As Carney said in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, “We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy.” The Munich Security Conference this year also echoed this, stating: “more than 80 years after construction began, the U.S.-led post-1945 international order is now under destruction.”

But what new order will take its place? And what place will Canada take in it?

Trump faces impossible dilemma as Iran gets the upper hand

Four weeks into the US-Israel war of aggression against Iran, the war aims of US imperialism have not only not been achieved, but they look further away than before. Trump is faced with an impossible situation. If he cuts his losses and declares victory now that would represent a massive humiliation for US imperialism, and a massive personal blow. But any attempt to escalate would be fraught with danger and carry serious risks with only a slim chance of success. At the present time he appears as if he is attempting to do both at the same time.

The fight against OSAP cuts: A balance sheet thus far

Nearly seven weeks have passed since Doug Ford’s announcement of dramatic cuts to Ontario’s OSAP program—a program designed to help students pay their tuition.

The response from students since then has been nothing short of historic. On March 4, thousands of postsecondary students from across Ontario gathered at Queen’s Park at the call of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario (CFS-O) to voice their anger at the politicians sitting inside. This was easily one of the largest protests of postsecondary students in Ontario in recent memory—and a sign of things to come.

On March 11, thousands of high school students staged walkouts at their schools, also in protest of OSAP cuts. Organizers estimate that some 120 schools participated in the walkout, a figure made more remarkable when one considers that high schoolers have no student unions and very little resources with which to organize. In most cases, it only took a few Instagram posts to draw a few dozen or even a few hundred students into the streets.

The most notable feature of this movement has been the growing popularity of the idea of a student strike. In the past, this demand was put forward almost exclusively by small groups on the left, including our own. But even this has started to change.
