Dear Readers,

I want to point out an important principle that can be applied throughout scripture, namely that reality is always far superior to the shadow. So many things and people in the Old Testament prefigured many realities in the New Testament. They are all far more inferior to the reality that they prefigured.

The manna given to the Israelites in the desert prefigured the Eucharist. In speaking of it and its inferiority Christ states: “Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world” - John 6:49

We can use this point to apply to anything or anyone that was clearly prefigured in the Old Testament. We can use this also grasp the reverence and devotion we ought to have to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Ark Was Prepared According to God’s Meticulous Instructions

When God commanded Moses to construct the Ark of the Covenant, He did not say merely, “Build a box.”

God gave remarkably precise instructions.

He specified: its dimensions; the wood from which it was to be constructed; its gold covering; its mouldings; its rings; its carrying poles; the mercy seat; the cherubim; and where the Ark was to be placed.

God said:

“And they shall make an ark of acacia wood.”
— Exodus 25:10

He then proceeded to give detailed instructions concerning its construction and adornment (Exodus 25:10–22).

Why such extraordinary care?

Because the Ark was not an ordinary object.

It was associated with the presence of God among His people.

God declared:

“There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat... I will speak with you.”
— Exodus 25:22

The Ark was therefore treated with profound reverence.

It was not to be handled casually. The Levites were given specific instructions concerning its transportation, and Numbers 4:15 warned that the sacred things were not to be touched.

When Uzzah reached out and touched the Ark, he was struck down (2 Samuel 6:6–7).

David himself was initially afraid and exclaimed:

“How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
— 2 Samuel 6:9

The Ark was holy because it was uniquely associated with God’s covenant and presence.

But What Did the Ark Actually Carry?

This is where the comparison becomes extraordinary.

The Ark contained sacred things associated with the Old Covenant.

Hebrews tells us that it contained:

“the golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.”
— Hebrews 9:4

Consider what these represented.

The tablets represented God’s Law.

The manna represented the miraculous bread from heaven.

Aaron’s rod represented the legitimate priesthood established by God.

The Ark therefore carried:

the Law, the Bread from Heaven, and the sign of the Priesthood.

But these things were ultimately shadows pointing toward Christ.

Mary Carried the Reality

The Blessed Virgin Mary carried something infinitely greater.

She did not carry tablets of stone.

She carried the Word made flesh.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
— John 1:14

She did not merely carry manna, the miraculous bread given by God in the wilderness.

She carried Jesus Christ, the true Bread of Life.

Christ Himself declared:

“I am the bread of life.”
— John 6:35

She did not merely carry a symbol associated with the Old Testament priesthood.

She carried Jesus Christ, the eternal High Priest.

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God...”
— Hebrews 4:14

The Old Ark contained objects associated with God’s covenant.

Mary carried the Author of the Covenant Himself.

The Old Ark carried signs of God’s presence.

Mary carried God incarnate.

The Ark Was Overshadowed by God’s Presence

There is another remarkable parallel.

When the Ark was brought into the tabernacle, the cloud of God’s glory covered it:

“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
— Exodus 40:34

Now turn to the Annunciation.

The angel Gabriel tells Mary:

“The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee.”
— Luke 1:35

The language of overshadowing recalls the divine presence associated with the tabernacle and Ark.

The Old Ark was overshadowed by the glory of God.

Mary was overshadowed by the power of the Most High.

And what happened within her?

The eternal Son of God took human flesh.

The Ark and Mary Both Go Into the Hill Country

There is another fascinating parallel.

After the Ark was recovered, David took it into the hill country of Judah:

“And David arose and went... to bring up from there the ark of God.”
— 2 Samuel 6:2

The Ark remained in the house of Obed-edom for three months, and the household was blessed:

“And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months; and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household.”
— 2 Samuel 6:11

Now compare this with the Visitation.

After receiving Christ within her womb, Mary:

“arose and went with haste into the hill country”
— Luke 1:39

She entered the house of Zechariah and Elizabeth.

And Mary remained there approximately three months (Luke 1:56).

What happens?

Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Ghost and cries out:

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
— Luke 1:42

Then Elizabeth asks:

“And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
— Luke 1:43

The parallels are remarkable:

The Ark
→ enters the hill country, → remains for three months, → brings blessing to the household.

Mary
→ enters the hill country, → remains for approximately three months, → brings the presence of Christ and blessing to Elizabeth’s household.

This is one of the reasons the Ark typology is so compelling.

David Leaped Before the Ark

There is yet another striking parallel.

When David saw the Ark approaching:

“David danced before the LORD with all his might.”
— 2 Samuel 6:14

And when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting:

“the babe leaped in her womb.”
— Luke 1:41

The unborn John the Baptist responds with joy to the presence of Christ, who has entered the house through Mary.

David rejoiced before the Ark.

John rejoiced before the New Ark.

David asks:

“How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
— 2 Samuel 6:9

Elizabeth essentially asks the corresponding question:

“And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
— Luke 1:43

Luke is presenting Mary in unmistakably Ark-like imagery.

The Greater the Presence, the Greater the Honour

This brings us to the central Catholic point.

Catholics do not worship Mary.

Worship—latria—belongs to God alone.

Mary is a creature. She is entirely dependent upon God’s grace.

But God chose her for a unique purpose that no other human being ever shared:

She became the Mother of God incarnate.

The Ark was honoured because of what God had chosen to associate with it.

Mary is honoured because of the One whom God chose her to carry.

And the difference is immeasurable.

The Ark carried: the tablets of the Law.

Mary carried: the Lawgiver.

The Ark carried: the manna.

Mary carried: the Bread of Life.

The Ark was associated with: the Old Covenant.

Mary carried: the Mediator of the New and Eternal Covenant.

The Ark was associated with: the presence of God among Israel.

Mary carried: God Himself made flesh.

If the Shadow Was Sacred, How Much More the Reality?

This is the logic of biblical typology.

The Old Testament contains realities that foreshadow greater realities fulfilled in Christ.

The Passover lamb foreshadowed Christ.

The manna foreshadowed Christ.

The Temple foreshadowed greater realities fulfilled in Christ.

The Ark likewise foreshadows the New Covenant reality.

And if the Old Ark was constructed with such meticulous care because it was associated with God’s presence, it is reasonable to ask:

How much more perfectly would God prepare the woman chosen to become the Mother of His Son?

Mary was not merely an instrument that God used and then discarded.

She was chosen to participate uniquely in the mystery of the Incarnation.

The angel called her:

“full of grace”
— Luke 1:28

And Mary herself prophesied:

“Behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.”
— Luke 1:48

Catholic honour toward Mary therefore does not compete with the honour due to God.

It magnifies God’s work in her.

We honour the masterpiece because we honour the Master who created it.

Mary Is Not Greater Than God—But She Is Greater Than Every Other Creature

There must be an important distinction.

Mary is not divine. She is not a goddess. She is not equal to Christ. She did not create herself. Everything glorious about Mary comes from God’s grace.

Yet among all created persons, God gave her an unparalleled dignity.

She is the woman chosen to bear the Son of God. She is the Mother of the Messiah.

She is the Mother of God according to His human nature, because the Person born from her is truly God.

And therefore Catholic devotion gives Mary the highest honour that can be given to a creature: hyperdulia.

God alone receives latria.

The saints receive dulia.

The Blessed Virgin Mary receives hyperdulia.

And Christ alone receives the worship that belongs to God.

The main point here is:

If God commanded meticulous preparation and profound reverence for the Ark because it was the sacred vessel associated with His presence...

how much more should we honour Mary, whom God Himself prepared to become the dwelling place of His Incarnate Son?

The Ark carried the shadow. Mary carried the Reality !

The Ark carried God’s covenant tablets. Mary carried the Word made flesh.

The Ark carried manna. Mary carried the Bread of Life.

The Ark was overshadowed by God’s glory. Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Ghost.

The Ark went into the hill country and brought blessing. Mary went into the hill country carrying Christ and brought blessing to Elizabeth’s household.

The Ark was treated as holy because of what it contained.

Mary is honoured because of Whom she carried.

And Scripture gives us the final word:

“Behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.”
— Luke 1:48

Mary does not take glory away from God.

She is one of God’s greatest demonstrations of grace.

And when the Church honours Mary, she ultimately points beyond Mary—to the One who chose her, sanctified her, dwelt within her, and came into the world through her.

**THE OLD ARK CARRIED THE SHADOW. MARY CARRIED THE REALITY.**

If the Ark was treated with such reverence because it carried signs of God’s presence, how much more should we honour the woman who carried God Himself !

Today, I want to look at the famous words from the book of Genesis, that we traditionally ascribe to the blessed Virgin Mary, namely those words spoken to the Serpent in the garden of Eden “I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.” Genesis 3:15

1. First, the grammatical question.

The Hebrew of Genesis 3:15 has the masculine pronoun הוּא (hûʾ), not a feminine hîʾ. The Septuagint likewise has the masculine αὐτός (autos). So if the question is:

“Does the Hebrew literally say ‘she shall crush your head’?”

the answer is no.

That is why modern Catholic editions based closely on the Hebrew generally translate:

“He shall crush your head.”

The Nova Vulgata, for example, reads “ipsum conteret caput tuum”—“he/it shall crush your head”—rather than ipsa.

But that does not destroy the Catholic interpretation of Mary. Let me give some clarity on this point.

2. The Catholic case does not depend upon a mistranslation

This is the crucial apologetic point.

A Protestant objection often goes:

“The Hebrew says he, therefore Catholics mistranslated the Bible to make Mary crush Satan.”

That conclusion does not follow.

The Catholic doctrine is not:

Mary replaces Christ as the Redeemer.

Rather:

Christ is the principal conqueror of Satan, while Mary is associated with Christ’s victory because she is the Woman whose seed is Christ.

Even the Hebrew text explicitly places the Woman and her seed together in opposition to the serpent:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your seed and her seed…”

The Woman is therefore not an incidental character. She is deliberately placed in enmity with the serpent.

And Catholic theology identifies the ultimate Woman of Genesis with Mary through the New Eve typology.

3. The New Eve is the real Catholic argument

Look at the biblical parallel:

This becomes particularly powerful in St. John’s Gospel.

At Cana, Christ calls Mary “Woman”:

“Woman, what have you to do with me?” (John 2:4)

And at Calvary:

“When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son!” (John 19:26)

That is not accidental Johannine terminology.

John deliberately presents Mary as “the Woman.”

And Revelation develops the imagery still further: the Woman stands in opposition to the ancient serpent/dragon, whose hostility is directed against her offspring (Rev. 12:1–17).

Thus the Catholic argument is considerably larger than one Latin pronoun.

4. But what about ipsa?

Here we need to distinguish two things.

The traditional Vulgate reads:

ipsa conteret caput tuum

literally:

“she shall crush your head.”

That is the famous Marian reading. The Clementine Vulgate and Douay-Rheims preserve it.

5. Why do Catholics defend the traditional “she”?

The answer is typological participation.

There is an important biblical principle here: the action of one person can be attributed to another who participates in that person’s victory.

For example, St. Paul says:

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”
— Romans 16:20

Who crushes Satan? - God.

Yet Paul says that Satan will be crushed under the Christians’ feet.

That doesn’t mean Christians replace God as the principal conqueror.

It means that God conquers Satan through and with His members.

The same principle allows Catholic theology to speak of Mary as crushing the serpent through her participation in Christ’s victory.

Christ is the ultimate conqueror. Mary is the Woman associated with Him. Hence, the fact both readings express theological truths is something Catholics have long noted. For example, the footnotes provided a couple of hundred years ago by Bishop Challoner in his revision of the Douay state, “The sense is the same: For it is by her seed, Jesus Christ, that the woman crushes the serpent’s head.” See also A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, edited by Bernard Orchard [New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1953, 186].

What is more is we could also add that there are other meanings to the passage should not be neglected. As we said, on the literal level the prophecy may refer to the general conflict between humans and snakes that we have seen throughout history. This interpretation would take “the seed” of the woman to refer to humanity in general—the children of Eve. This is a valid interpretation since “seed” can be taken either as a plural term (referring to all mankind) or as a singular term (referring to the Son of Man).

6. Mary does have a unique participation in Christ’s victory

This isn’t merely a medieval invention based on ipsa.

Consider the Annunciation.

God doesn’t simply appear in the world independently of Mary.

The Incarnation takes place through her freely given fiat:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

The woman whose obedience corresponds to Eve’s disobedience becomes the mother of the Redeemer.

Thus:

Eve’s disobedience → participation in humanity’s fall

Mary’s obedience → participation in humanity’s redemption

Not because Mary is the Redeemer.

But because God chose to associate her uniquely with the Redeemer.

7. This is why the Immaculate Conception is important

The Catholic interpretation of Genesis 3:15 actually becomes stronger when we don’t depend exclusively on ipsa.

Notice what God says:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman.”

The Catholic interpretation sees this as an extraordinary statement.

If there is to be complete and perpetual enmity between the Woman and Satan, then Mary is understood as the Woman who, by God’s grace, is never placed under Satan’s dominion through original sin.

That is precisely the logic Pope Pius IX invokes in Ineffabilis Deus when explaining the Immaculate Conception.

So the Catholic argument is:

Genesis 3:15 → the Woman is placed in extraordinary enmity with the serpent → Mary is the New Eve → Mary is uniquely associated with Christ → Christ conquers Satan → Mary’s victory is derivative and participatory.

The ipsa tradition beautifully expresses this theology, but the theology does not stand or fall on the grammatical gender of one Latin pronoun.

8. Who is He?

Even if the Protestant wants to insist on the Hebrew pronoun being “He”.

We can simply respond by asking: Who is the “he”?

The answer is the seed of the Woman—ultimately Christ.

Well then who is the woman?

The Catholic answer is ultimately Mary as the New Eve, prefigured by Eve and fulfilled in the Gospel.

So the Catholic interpretation doesn’t disappear when ipsa becomes ipse.

Instead, you get:

Christ is the one who crushes Satan’s head, and Mary is the Woman uniquely associated with Him in that victory !

When we put forward the Catholic devotion to Mary, the mother of Our Saviour, Protestants will often put forward the objection, where in scripture does it say we should kneel down before an image of her. They will say such a practice is idolatry. However, scripture itself gives us many examples of how bowing down in veneration before someone or something is not seen as adoration which is due to God.

The Old Testament contains several examples where Israelites bowed, prostrated themselves, or showed acts of reverence before created persons or sacred objects without those things being God. The important distinction is between adoration owed to God alone (latria) and honour/reverence given to creatures or sacred things.

Here are some of the clearest examples:

1. Abraham bows before the Hittites

Genesis 23:7, 12

Abraham stood before the people of the land and bowed down before them while negotiating for Sarah’s burial place.

“Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth.” — Genesis 23:7

He certainly wasn’t worshipping the Hittites as gods. His bowing was an act of respect/homage.

2. Jacob bows before Esau

Genesis 33:3

Jacob approaches Esau:

“He passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.”

Jacob bows seven times before Esau.

Again, Esau is obviously not God. The gesture expresses honour and submission, not divine worship.

3. Jacob’s family bows before Joseph

Genesis 42:6; 43:26, 28

Joseph’s brothers come before him and:

“Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.” — Genesis 42:6

This is particularly interesting because it fulfills Joseph’s earlier dream in Genesis 37:5–10, where his brothers would bow before him.

Joseph is not God. Yet Scripture describes the physical act of bowing down before him.

4. Moses bows before his father-in-law

Exodus 18:7

When Jethro comes to Moses:

“Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him.”

The Hebrew concept of shachah (שָׁחָה), often translated bow down, prostrate oneself, or do obeisance, can therefore describe an act directed toward a human being.

5. Ruth bows before Boaz

Ruth 2:10

Ruth asks Boaz why he has shown her favour:

“Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes...?”

Boaz is a man, not God.

Yet Ruth physically falls on her face and bows before him.

6. David bows before Jonathan

1 Samuel 20:41

David and Jonathan meet:

“David... fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times.”

Jonathan isn’t God, yet David bows before him.

7. Abigail bows before David

1 Samuel 25:23

When Abigail meets David:

“She fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground.”

Again, the act is directed toward a human being.

8. The Israelites bow before the Ark

Joshua 7:6

After Israel’s defeat at Ai:

“Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide.”

This is especially relevant to Catholic apologetics.

The Ark of the Covenant is not God. Nevertheless, Joshua falls on his face before it.

Why? Because the Ark is a sacred object associated with God’s presence.

9. Israel bows before the bronze serpent

Numbers 21:8–9

God commands Moses to make the bronze serpent, and those who look upon it are healed.

Later, however, the Israelites begin treating the bronze serpent improperly. 2 Kings 18:4 tells us that Hezekiah destroyed it because the Israelites were burning incense to it.

This gives us an important distinction:

• Using/honouring a God-commanded sacred object: legitimate.

• Treating the object itself as a god: idolatry.

The problem with the bronze serpent was not that it existed, but that it became an object of idolatrous worship.

The point is that scripture does not teach that every physical act of bowing before something or someone is automatically worship.

The context determines what the act means.

This is important when discussing Catholic veneration of saints, angels, relics and sacred images.

The Catholic argument isn’t “we can worship creatures.” Catholic theology explicitly reserves adoration (latria) for God alone.

Rather, Scripture demonstrates that bowing, kneeling, prostration and other physical gestures can signify honour without implying that the person or object is God.

And there’s an even stronger example relevant to the Catholic distinction: 1 Chronicles 29:20 says that the whole assembly bowed their heads and worshipped the LORD and paid homage to the king—showing the text itself distinguishes between divine worship and honour given to a human ruler.

While it is true that Catholicism is not a pacifist religion, it is equally important to recognize that Christianity was not established by a military conquest or imposed upon the ancient world by an army.

The Gospel was first proclaimed by the Apostles, and subsequently carried throughout the world by bishops, priests, religious, and missionaries. The early Christians possessed no army with which to impose the Faith. On the contrary, many of the first Christians suffered imprisonment, persecution, torture, and martyrdom rather than renounce Christ.

The Catholic Church therefore distinguishes between legitimate Christian teaching concerning warfare and the claim that the Christian Faith itself was propagated through warfare. Christianity’s expansion began principally through preaching, conversion, witness, sacrifice, and martyrdom.

The rise of Islam presents a substantially different historical picture. Muhammad was not merely a religious preacher; he also became the political and military leader of the emerging Muslim community. During his lifetime, Muhammad participated in military campaigns, and after his death the early Islamic caliphates expanded rapidly through military conquest across large portions of Arabia, the Middle East, North Africa, Persia, and beyond.

Islamic sources themselves contain numerous passages concerning warfare, including commands to fight Muhammad’s opponents. Consequently, the historical relationship between the expansion of Islam and military power cannot simply be dismissed as a later misunderstanding.

This does not mean that every individual Muslim throughout history was converted by force, nor that every Muslim community was established through conquest. Conversion occurred through many different means, including preaching, trade, intermarriage, political influence, and genuine personal conviction.

Nevertheless, there remains a significant historical distinction:

Christianity began with Apostles preaching Christ and accepting martyrdom; Islam began with Muhammad combining religious leadership with political and military authority.

The Christian Church conquered the ancient world primarily by converting hearts.

Islam, particularly in its early expansion, also possessed the sword as an instrument of political and territorial expansion.

For the Catholic apologist, the point is not to insult Muslims, but to examine the historical evidence honestly and ask an important question:

What kind of religion is being presented—and what means did its founder and earliest followers use to establish and expand it?

Let us make an objective examination of the question: What does the Qur’an itself teach about warfare, and how does that compare with the teaching of Jesus Christ and the Catholic understanding of a just war?

When the Qur’an’s military passages are read together—and then compared with early Islamic history—a significant difference emerges between the Christian Gospel and the Islamic conception of religious warfare.

1. The Qur’an Does Contain Commands to Fight

The first point is simply textual.

The Qur’an contains numerous passages commanding Muhammad and his followers to fight.

For example:

“And kill them wherever you overtake them…”
— Qur’an 2:191

The surrounding verses are important. Verse 191 speaks about people who had expelled the Muslims and explicitly says not to fight at the Sacred Mosque unless they attack first. Verse 192 also says that fighting should cease if the opponents cease.

Therefore, a Christian apologist should not turn 2:191 into the claim that Muslims are simply commanded to kill everyone everywhere.

But neither should we pretend the verse does not contain an explicit command to kill enemies in the context being discussed.

The next verse says:

“Fight them until there is no more persecution and worship is for Allah.”

— Qur’an 2:193

And Qur’an 2:216 states:

“Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you.”

The Qur’an therefore does not present warfare merely as an unfortunate phenomenon that has nothing to do with religion. Fighting can be religiously commanded.

Keep in mind that Islamic scripture contains well over a hundred passages that, in their historical and textual context, speak about fighting, killing, or waging war against unbelievers and opponents. These passages need to be read in context, but they cannot simply be dismissed as having nothing to do with religiously sanctioned violence.

2. The Qur’an Connects Fighting With Religious Allegiance

This becomes even more significant when we examine other passages.

Qur’an 8:39 says to fight until there is no more fitnah and “religion is entirely for Allah.”

Qur’an 9:29 commands fighting against certain members of the People of the Book until they pay the jizya.

The historical significance of this should not be ignored.

Jizya became a tax imposed upon non-Muslim monotheistic communities—including Christians and Jews—living under Muslim rule. Its application varied considerably according to time and place, and historians note that Muslim conquerors frequently adapted existing Byzantine and Persian taxation systems.

The important apologetic question is therefore not:

“Were all Christians forcibly converted to Islam?”

That would be historically inaccurate.

The better question is:

“Did classical Islamic political rule distinguish between Muslims and conquered non-Muslim communities?”

The answer is clearly yes.

3. Qur’an 9:5 Must Be Read Carefully—but It Cannot Simply Be Ignored

Another frequently debated passage is Qur’an 9:5:

“Kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them, besiege them, and sit in wait for them…”

This verse must be read in its immediate context.

Verse 9:4 makes an exception for polytheists who had honoured their treaties, while 9:6 discusses granting protection to a polytheist who seeks it.

Consequently, it is intellectually dishonest to quote 9:5 as though it were an unconditional command to murder every non-Muslim on earth.

But the opposite error is equally serious.

The contextual qualifications do not erase the fact that the Qur’an contains an explicit military command concerning polytheist enemies.

The Christian apologist should therefore argue from the actual text—not from exaggeration.

4. Qur’an 9:29 Raises an Even Deeper Question

Qur’an 9:29 says:

“Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day … from among those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the jizya … while they are humbled.”

This passage is especially important because it concerns the People of the Book, which includes Christians and Jews.

The question is therefore not merely whether Islam permits defensive warfare.

The deeper question is:

Can religious difference itself become a legitimate basis for military subjugation and the imposition of a special tax upon the conquered non-Muslim population?

Historically, systems involving jizya became an established feature of Islamic governance in many regions.

This does not mean that every Muslim ruler behaved identically or that every Christian under Muslim rule was persecuted.

History is considerably more complicated.

But it does demonstrate that the Qur’anic military and political framework had consequences beyond individual self-defence.

5. The Early Islamic Conquests Give the Question Historical Weight

The argument becomes stronger when we move from the Qur’anic text to history.

Following Muhammad’s death in AD 632, the Rashidun Caliphate expanded rapidly.

By the middle of the seventh century, Muslim armies had conquered enormous territories formerly belonging to the Byzantine and Sasanian empires.

The Battle of Yarmuk in AD 636 was decisive in the Muslim conquest of Syria. Muslim forces subsequently took major Byzantine territories, while campaigns against the Sasanian Empire brought much of Iraq and Persia under Muslim rule. Egypt was conquered beginning in AD 639.

This does not prove that every conquest was motivated exclusively by religious hatred. Political, economic, military and geopolitical factors were obviously involved.

But it does demonstrate something important:

Islam emerged not merely as a private religion but as a religious-political order that rapidly became an expanding empire.

That historical reality makes the Qur’anic military passages impossible to dismiss as irrelevant to Islamic history.

6. The Conquest of Egypt Is Particularly Significant

Egypt provides an illuminating example.

At the time of the Muslim conquest, Egypt was overwhelmingly Christian, although it was deeply divided by theological and political disputes.

Muslim forces under ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ invaded Egypt in AD 639, and the country subsequently passed from Byzantine to Muslim rule.

Again, we should resist simplistic claims.

The Christian population was not simply exterminated, nor was everyone immediately forced to convert.

Instead, Christians continued to exist under Muslim political authority, while non-Muslim communities were incorporated into the Islamic political and fiscal system.

This distinction is crucial.

Conquest and forced conversion are not the same thing.

A serious Catholic apologist should never confuse them.

7. Objection: What About the Crusades?

The obvious objection is:

Yes—but context matters.

The Crusades did not arise in a historical vacuum. They came after centuries of Muslim military expansion into territories that had been overwhelmingly Christian, including Syria, Palestine, Egypt, North Africa, and large parts of the Byzantine Empire.

The First Crusade was launched in the context of Byzantine appeals for military assistance after further Turkish advances into Christian territory, and its stated objective was to recover access to the Holy Land and defend Eastern Christians.

That does not mean that every action committed during the Crusades was morally justified. Christians, like everyone else, can commit grave sins even while fighting a war that has a legitimate cause.

But the claim that Christianity simply “started wars” through the Crusades while Islam was merely an innocent victim ignores centuries of preceding Muslim conquest and warfare.

The historical question is not simply, “Did Christians fight?”

Of course they did.

The real question is:

Why were they fighting, what caused the conflict, and were their actions morally justified?

Christianity does not teach that war is inherently good. Catholic teaching permits warfare only under strict conditions of justice, legitimate authority, and proportionality.

So the Crusades cannot honestly be used as a simplistic argument that Christianity and Islam had identical historical origins or attitudes toward warfare.

While some may say, yes I agree, but some Christian wars were unjust, and Christians must be willing to admit it.

Yes, no one denies this, however, this does not establish moral equivalence.

Catholic theology does not teach:

“Fight unbelievers because they are unbelievers.”

The Catholic tradition instead developed a doctrine of just war.

St. Augustine laid the foundations, and St. Thomas Aquinas later articulated three central requirements for a just war:

1. Legitimate authority

2. Just cause

3. Right intention

Aquinas explicitly condemns warfare motivated by hatred, cruelty, vengeance, or the desire for domination.

This distinction is absolutely fundamental.

The Catholic Church does not teach that simply being a Christian makes killing another person morally permissible.

8. Christianity Begins With the Command to Love One’s Enemies

Jesus Christ says:

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

— Matthew 5:44

He says:

“Blessed are the peacemakers.”

— Matthew 5:9

When Peter draws his sword at Christ’s arrest, Jesus tells him:

“Put your sword back into its place.”

— Matthew 26:52

And Christ’s kingdom is not established by an army conquering the nations.

The Apostles are commanded to:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

— Matthew 28:19

The weapon of the Apostolic Church is therefore fundamentally the preaching of the Gospel, conversion of the heart, baptism and grace.

Christianity certainly recognizes legitimate civil authority and the right of governments to defend their people. But the conversion of unbelievers cannot be accomplished by the sword.

9. Christianity Does Not Deny the Reality of War

This distinction matters.

The Catholic Church does not teach absolute pacifism.

A government may have a duty to defend innocent people against aggression. St. Thomas Aquinas recognized legitimate warfare under appropriate circumstances.

But there is a profound difference between:

“A nation may defend its people against unjust aggression.”

and:

“Fight until religious opposition disappears and religion belongs entirely to Allah.”

The first is a moral doctrine concerning justice and the common good.

The second raises the question of whether religious allegiance itself can become an objective of warfare.

That is where the apologetic comparison becomes particularly significant.

10. The Christian Gospel Conquers by Conversion, Not Conquest

The early Christians had no army.

For roughly three centuries, Christians existed as a persecuted minority within the Roman Empire.

They did not conquer Rome with swords.

They conquered hearts through martyrdom, preaching, charity, sacramental life and holiness.

The Roman Empire eventually became Christian—not because Christians militarily conquered Rome, but because the Gospel converted Romans.

This is beautifully summarized by Christ:

“My kingdom is not of this world.”

— John 18:36

Christ’s kingdom is not advanced by forcing people to profess Christianity under threat of the sword.

11. Christianity Has Its Own Dark Chapters—and we can admit that ! We don’t glory in human shortcomings !

Catholics have never claimed that every war fought by Christians was free from human sin, injustice, or abuse. Quite the contrary: Catholic moral teaching judges warfare—and the conduct of those who wage it—according to an objective moral law.

We do not judge Christianity by the sins of Christians. We judge Christians by the Gospel.

A Christian who murders an innocent person cannot simply say, “I did it for Christ,” and thereby make the murder Christian. The fact that someone commits an evil act while professing Christianity does not make that evil act a teaching of Christianity.

The Gospel judges the Christian; the Christian does not get to redefine the Gospel.

Therefore, when examining the Crusades, the Inquisitions, or any other historical conflict, the proper question is not merely, “Did Christians ever commit atrocities?” Of course human beings—including Christians—have committed grave sins.

The deeper question is: Were those actions consistent with the moral principles taught by Christ and His Church?

That distinction is essential. The failures of Christians do not invalidate Christianity any more than the crimes of a physician invalidate medicine. The standard remains the teaching itself—not the sinful failure of those who profess it.

12. The Crucifix Is the Great Christian Answer to the Sword

This is perhaps the deepest difference.

Islam’s sacred history contains military victories in which warfare is explicitly connected with religious objectives.

Christianity’s central symbol is not a victorious warrior standing over his enemies.

It is Christ hanging upon the Cross.

The King conquers by suffering.

The Messiah conquers through sacrifice.

The Christian response to persecution is not:

“Destroy your enemy.”

It is:

“Forgive them.”

Christ says from the Cross:

“Father, forgive them.”

— Luke 23:34

This does not make Christianity a religion incapable of defending the innocent.

It means that violence is not Christianity’s instrument for converting the human heart.

13. The heart of the matter.

The main point here is not to judge each individual in Islam, but rather to look at the rule that guides them.

What does your sacred text teach about religious warfare?

Then read the passages together.

Qur’an 2:191 speaks of killing enemies.

Qur’an 2:193 speaks of fighting until there is no more fitnah and worship is for Allah.

Qur’an 2:216 says fighting has been prescribed.

Qur’an 9:5 speaks of killing, capturing and besieging polytheists in its particular context.

Qur’an 9:29 commands fighting certain People of the Book until they pay jizya.

These passages deserve serious examination rather than slogans.

The issue is not whether Muslims can be peaceful.

Of course they can.

The issue is not whether Christians have ever sinned.

Of course they have.

The real question is:

What does each religion teach about the proper relationship between religious truth, political authority and the use of force?

The Catholic tradition says that war can only be morally justified under stringent conditions such as legitimate authority, just cause and right intention.

And the Gospel commands Christians to love their enemies, forgive their persecutors and preach the Gospel to every nation.

The Qur’an, meanwhile, contains explicit commands concerning fighting, warfare, military victory and the subjugation of particular religious opponents.

That distinction should not be hidden. Nor should it be exaggerated.

It should simply be examined honestly.

Conclusion: Read the Texts—Then Compare the Founders

The strongest Catholic apologetic argument is not:

“Muslims are violent.”

It is:

“Read the Qur’an. Read the Gospel. Examine the historical consequences of each. Then ask what kind of kingdom each founder established.”

Muhammad became a religious and political ruler who commanded armies and whose movement rapidly expanded into a territorial empire.

Jesus Christ established His kingdom through the Cross.

Muhammad’s followers conquered territories.

Christ’s Apostles conquered hearts.

Muhammad’s movement became an empire.

Christ’s Church began as a persecuted minority without an army.

And when Christianity developed a theology of warfare, its greatest theologians did not simply declare war permissible because an enemy was an unbeliever. They placed warfare under moral restrictions of legitimate authority, just cause and right intention.

That is the question worth putting before the reader:

If both religions claim to reveal the will of God, what does their teaching about the sword reveal about the nature of their kingdoms?

Read the Qur’an. Read the Gospel. Know the history. Then decide

The Assumption of Mary: Biblical, Historical, and Theological Evidence

Dear Readers,

When we begin expounding the assumption of Our Lady into heaven, we are often met with the Protestant objection: “The Bible Never Says Mary Was Assumed into Heaven.” . . .

That statement is true—but it does not settle the question. This reality is not mentioned in scripture simply because the bible was compiled before Our Lady departed this world. We can also add it wasn’t included because the main focus of the gospels and the letters of the various Apostles and Evangelists was to communicate the work of redemption accomplished by Christ.

That the bible didn’t record such a reality doesn’t mean it didn’t happen!

It is true to say that the Bible never gives us a sentence that says, “Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven.” Catholics do not claim that it does.

But the more important question is:

Does Sacred Scripture contradict the Assumption? Does Scripture provide principles and patterns consistent with it? And what does the earliest Christian Tradition tell us about the fate of Mary’s body?

When these questions are considered together, the Assumption emerges not as a medieval invention, but as a doctrine deeply consistent with Scripture, the Christian understanding of Mary, and the Church’s ancient Tradition.

1. Scripture Shows That God Can Take His Servants Bodily Into Heaven

The objection sometimes sounds as though bodily assumption into heaven would be completely foreign to Scripture.

It isn’t.

Genesis tells us:

“Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”
— Genesis 5:24

And 2 Kings describes Elijah being taken from the earth:

“And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.”
— 2 Kings 2:11

The point is not that Enoch, Elijah, and Mary experienced exactly the same event.

The point is that bodily translation into heavenly glory is already part of the biblical worldview.

God is perfectly capable of glorifying a human body.

Therefore, the question is not:

“Can God do this?”

He clearly can.

The question is:

“Did God choose to do something extraordinary for Mary?”

And Scripture gives us considerable reason to believe that Mary occupies an extraordinary place in salvation history.

2. Mary Is the Ark of the New Covenant

One of the most powerful biblical patterns supporting Catholic Marian theology is the relationship between the Ark of the Covenant and Mary.

The Old Covenant Ark was not merely an ordinary container.

It was the sacred vessel associated with God’s presence among His people.

And what did the Ark contain?

• The tablets of the Law.

• The manna from heaven.

• The rod of Aaron the high priest.

The New Covenant fulfills these realities in Christ.

Jesus is:

• the Word made flesh, the fulfillment of the Law;

• the Bread of Life, the true Bread from Heaven;

• the eternal High Priest.

And who carried Jesus?

Mary.

The parallels between the Ark narrative and Luke’s account of the Visitation are striking.

The Ark goes into the hill country of Judah

“And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baalejudah...”
— 2 Samuel 6:2

Mary likewise travels into the hill country:

“In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country...”
— Luke 1:39

David asks how the Ark can come to him

“How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
— 2 Samuel 6:9

Elizabeth says:

“And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
— Luke 1:43

Notice the striking correspondence:

Ark of the LORD → Mother of my Lord

The Ark remains for approximately three months

“And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months...”
— 2 Samuel 6:11

Luke tells us:

“And Mary remained with her about three months...”
— Luke 1:56

Luke is not merely recording travel arrangements.

He is presenting Jesus and His Mother against the background of Old Testament imagery.

Mary is the woman who carries within her the presence of God incarnate.

If the Old Covenant Ark was treated with extraordinary reverence because of what it contained, how much more significant is the woman who carried God Himself in the flesh?

3. Revelation Connects the Heavenly Ark With the Woman

There is another remarkable connection.

At the end of Revelation 11, John writes:

“Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple.”
— Revelation 11:19

Immediately afterward, John says:

“And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”
— Revelation 12:1

The Woman gives birth to:

“a male child, he is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron”
— Revelation 12:5

That is unmistakably connected with Christ.

The Woman in Revelation has multiple levels of meaning. She represents Israel, the People of God, and the Church. But she also has a direct Marian dimension because she gives birth to the Messiah.

And where does John see her?

In heaven.

This does not mean Revelation 12:1 is a simple proof-text saying, “Mary was assumed.”

It is more subtle—and more profound.

The biblical imagery presents the Mother of the Messiah as a heavenly sign, clothed in glory and crowned with twelve stars.

This is entirely compatible with the Catholic understanding that Mary was glorified body and soul.

4. Mary Is “Full of Grace”

Gabriel’s greeting is extraordinary:

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!”
— Luke 1:28

The Greek expression kecharitomene describes Mary as one who has been uniquely graced by God.

Catholic theology does not understand Mary as possessing divine power or as being a goddess.

Rather, everything Mary possesses is a gift of God’s grace.

Her privileges flow from Christ.

Her Immaculate Conception comes from Christ.

Her divine motherhood comes from Christ.

Her Assumption comes from Christ.

The Assumption therefore does not diminish Christ’s glory.

It magnifies what Christ’s grace can accomplish in a human being.

5. The Assumption Fits the Biblical Pattern of Christ’s Victory Over Death

Christianity does not teach merely that the soul survives death.

Christianity teaches the resurrection of the body.

St. Paul writes:

“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:20

Christ’s Resurrection is the beginning of the restoration of humanity.

Mary’s Assumption can therefore be understood as a unique anticipation of the destiny promised to the redeemed.

Mary is not the source of salvation.

Christ is.

Mary’s glorification is possible precisely because Christ conquered sin and death.

The Assumption therefore proclaims:

Christ’s victory over death is real.

6. But Where Is Mary’s Tomb?

This is not a proof by itself, but it is an important historical question.

The early Christians cared deeply about the bodies and burial places of the saints.

The burial places associated with apostles and martyrs became places of Christian remembrance and veneration.

Yet there is no universally accepted ancient tradition preserving a bodily relic of Mary comparable to the relic traditions surrounding numerous other saints.

There are ancient traditions concerning Mary’s departure from this life, particularly traditions associated with Jerusalem and, later, Ephesus.

But notice what is missing:

There is no universally recognized bodily relic of Mary.

That is interesting precisely because Mary was not an obscure Christian.

She was:

• the Mother of Jesus;

• present at the Cross;

• present among the disciples;

• associated with the beginnings of the Church.

If her body had remained in a known tomb and become an object of Christian devotion, we might reasonably expect a strong and universally recognized relic tradition.

Instead, ancient Christianity developed traditions concerning her Dormition and glorification.

That historical fact does not independently prove the Assumption—but it fits remarkably well with it.

7. The Early Church Spoke of Mary’s Dormition

The earliest surviving writings about Mary’s departure from earthly life are generally known as the Transitus Mariae traditions.

These texts are not inspired Scripture.

Nor should Catholics pretend that every detail contained in every Transitus account is historically established.

Their importance lies elsewhere.

They demonstrate that Christians were discussing Mary’s death and heavenly glorification very early in Christian history.

By the patristic period, the Dormition of Mary had become firmly established in the liturgical and theological life of the Christian East.

The Western Church likewise developed a strong tradition concerning Mary’s Assumption.

This is significant because the doctrine did not suddenly appear in the Middle Ages.

Rather, there is evidence of an ancient and developing tradition of Mary’s departure and glorification.

The Catholic claim is therefore not:

“A fifth-century document invented the Assumption.”

It is:

The Church inherited, preserved, developed, and eventually defined a belief concerning Mary’s unique glorification that had deep roots in Christian Tradition.

8. What About the Silence of the New Testament?

Another interesting question is why the New Testament does not tell us what happened to Mary’s body.

The New Testament records the deaths of prominent Christians.

Stephen’s martyrdom is described in Acts 7.

James’s martyrdom is described in Acts 12.

Yet the New Testament gives us no account of Mary’s death, burial, or tomb.

We should be careful here.

Silence is not proof.

The Bible does not record the deaths of many important Christians, so we cannot argue:

“The Bible doesn’t mention Mary’s death; therefore she was assumed.”

That would be too strong.

But the silence becomes more interesting when combined with the historical evidence.

The New Testament leaves Mary’s earthly fate unexplained.

Early Christian Tradition subsequently develops around her Dormition and glorification, rather than around a universally recognized bodily tomb.

That cumulative picture is worth taking seriously.

9. “But the Bible Never Says It!”

The Catholic response should not be defensive.

Instead, ask a more fundamental question:

Does everything Christians must believe have to be explicitly stated in one verse of Scripture?

If so, where does Scripture itself give us the complete list of inspired books?

Where does the Bible say:

“These 27 books constitute the New Testament”?

It doesn’t.

We know the canon through the authority and Tradition of the Church.

Likewise, Scripture does not contain a verse saying:

“The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three distinct Persons in one divine essence.”

Yet Christians rightly believe the Trinity because the doctrine is derived from the whole of Scripture and expressed through the Church’s doctrinal Tradition.

The same principle applies to the Assumption.

Catholics do not need to manufacture a verse.

We need to ask what is taught by Scripture read within the Apostolic Tradition of the Church.

10. The Assumption Is Not About Making Mary a Goddess

This objection misunderstands Catholic teaching.

Mary did not ascend into heaven by her own divine power.

Christ saved Mary.

Christ redeemed Mary.

Christ glorified Mary.

The Assumption is therefore ultimately a doctrine about Jesus Christ.

It proclaims that His victory over sin and death is so complete that He has already applied its fruits to His Mother in a unique and extraordinary manner.

Mary is not equal to Christ.

She is His creature.

She is His Mother according to His humanity.

She is His disciple.

She is the first Christian to say:

“Let it be to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

And she is the woman who stood faithfully beneath His Cross.

Her glory comes entirely from Him.

11. Mary as a Sign of the Church’s Future

The Assumption also points beyond Mary herself.

The Catholic Church teaches that Mary is a sign of what the Church herself will ultimately become.

Christ did not come merely to save disembodied souls.

He came to redeem the whole human person.

The final Christian hope is:

the resurrection of the body.

Mary’s glorification is therefore an anticipation of the destiny awaiting the faithful at the resurrection.

She stands as a living testimony that Christ’s victory over death will ultimately triumph in His members.

What happened to Mary uniquely anticipates what Christ promises to His Church universally.

Conclusion: The Question Is Bigger Than One Verse

So, does the Bible explicitly say:

“Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven”?

No.

But neither does the Bible say:

“Mary’s body remained in a tomb on earth.”

The biblical evidence gives us:

• Enoch taken by God.

• Elijah taken into heaven.

• Mary uniquely “full of grace.”

• Mary as the Mother of the Lord.

• Mary as the New Covenant Ark.

• Revelation’s heavenly Woman who gives birth to the Messiah.

• Christ’s victory over death.

• The Christian hope of bodily resurrection.

The historical evidence gives us:

• an ancient tradition concerning Mary’s Dormition;

• early Christian writings concerning her departure;

• the development of Marian liturgical traditions in both East and West;

• and no universally recognized bodily relic of Mary comparable to the relic traditions surrounding many other saints.

None of these, taken in isolation, constitutes a simplistic proof-text.

Together, however, they form a cumulative case.

The Catholic therefore does not say:

“The Assumption is obvious because one Bible verse says it.”

The Catholic says:

The Assumption is consistent with the biblical pattern, illuminated by the biblical portrait of Mary, supported by ancient Christian Tradition, and ultimately defined by the Church’s teaching authority.

And the doctrine points us back to its true center:

Jesus Christ.

Mary’s Assumption is not a rival to the Gospel.

It is one of the Gospel’s most beautiful consequences.

The woman who received the Word made flesh, carried Him in her womb, gave birth to Him, cared for Him, followed Him to Calvary, and remained faithful to Him is now a sign of the destiny Christ has won for His redeemed people.

Christ conquered death.

Mary is the first great sign of what that victory will ultimately accomplish in His faithful members.

The Assumption is therefore not primarily a doctrine about where Mary is.

It is a proclamation of where Christ’s grace can ultimately take those who belong to Him.

The reality of the matter is that in order for Protestants to try to convince themselves and others that the bible is not a Catholic text, they must so badly twist reality in order force such a false conclusion.

Let us set out what we mean by this.

The Bible, the Church, and the Problem of Sola Scriptura

Ten Presuppositions Protestantism Must Face

The Protestant doctrine of sola Scriptura—the idea that Sacred Scripture is the Church’s sole infallible rule of faith—is often presented as a simple return to biblical Christianity: “We simply believe what the Bible says.”

But that statement raises a prior question:

Which books belong to the Bible, who established that canon, who preserved those books, and who possesses the authority to interpret them when Christians disagree?

The Catholic argument is not that Scripture is unimportant. Quite the opposite. Catholics believe Scripture is the inspired Word of God and therefore deserving of the highest reverence.

The question is whether Scripture was ever intended to exist in isolation from the apostolic Church, Sacred Tradition, and the teaching authority Christ established.

The following ten points expose the historical and theological assumptions that must be made if one wants to affirm sola Scriptura while rejecting the authority of the Catholic Church.

1. The biblical canon can be known and fixed without the Church

Before someone can say, “The Bible alone is my final authority,” they must first establish what constitutes the Bible.

The Bible does not contain an inspired table of contents.

There is no verse saying:

“These 27 books constitute the New Testament.”

Nor does Scripture provide a complete inspired list identifying every Old Testament book that Christians are required to accept.

The early Christians therefore had to discern which writings were genuinely apostolic and which were not.

This was not always immediately obvious. Eusebius, writing in the early fourth century, distinguished between books that were universally acknowledged, books that were disputed, and books that were rejected or spurious. Among the disputed writings were James, Jude, 2 Peter, and 2 and 3 John, while the status of Revelation was also contested.

Eventually the Church’s canonical tradition settled upon the 27-book New Testament.

The Synod of Hippo in 393 and the Council of Carthage in 397 produced lists corresponding to the Catholic New Testament, and the African canon was reaffirmed at Carthage in 419.

The Catholic Catechism therefore states that “it was by the apostolic Tradition that the Church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of the sacred books.”

The question is unavoidable

If Scripture alone is the ultimate authority, where did you get the list of Scriptures?

You cannot appeal to the canon to establish the canon without reasoning in a circle.

The Catholic position is that Christ gave His Church the responsibility of guarding and transmitting the apostolic deposit, including the discernment of which writings belong to Sacred Scripture.

2. Scripture possesses a self-authenticating authority independent of the Church

A common Protestant response is:

“The Church did not give us the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word, and the sheep recognize their Shepherd’s voice.”

But this introduces another assumption: that individual Christians—or the Christian community generally—can infallibly recognize which writings are inspired.

The difficulty is historical.

Christians did not simply possess a universally agreed New Testament from the beginning. Questions concerning several books persisted for centuries. Eusebius’s testimony demonstrates that the early Church was still distinguishing between recognized and disputed writings in the fourth century.

The issue is not whether God inspired Scripture.

He did.

The issue is how Christians know which writings God inspired.

Catholic theology distinguishes between the cause of Scripture’s authority and the means by which the Church recognizes that authority.

The Church does not make a book inspired by declaring it inspired. Rather, she recognizes and definitively receives writings belonging to the apostolic deposit.

That is why the Catholic Catechism speaks of the Church discerning the canon through apostolic Tradition.

In other words:

God is the ultimate author of Scripture; the Church is the divinely appointed custodian and discerner of the canon.

3. Individual interpretation of Scripture is sufficient to determine doctrine

Sola Scriptura does not necessarily mean that every Protestant believes every Christian should interpret Scripture completely alone.

Most Protestants acknowledge pastors, teachers, confessions, historical theology, councils, and commentators.

But the fundamental question remains:

What finally settles a doctrinal dispute?

If two Christians sincerely read Scripture and arrive at contradictory conclusions, Scripture itself does not normally descend from heaven to announce which interpretation is correct.

Consider the history of Christianity.

Christians have disagreed about:

• Baptism

• Predestination

• Justification

• The Eucharist

• Baptismal regeneration

• Church government

• The perseverance of the saints

• The possibility of apostasy

• Spiritual gifts

• Women’s ordination

• The meaning of Revelation

• The Lord’s Supper

The existence of disagreement does not prove that Scripture is unclear in every respect. Nor does it prove that Protestants cannot know Christian truth.

It demonstrates something more fundamental:

A written text still requires an authoritative interpreter.

The biblical model repeatedly involves authoritative teaching.

At the Council of Jerusalem, Christians did not merely distribute copies of Scripture and tell everyone to reach his own conclusion. The apostles and elders assembled, debated the question, and issued an authoritative judgment (Acts 15).

Likewise, Christ gave His apostles authority to bind and loose (Matthew 16:19; 18:18), and He commissioned them to teach the nations (Matthew 28:19–20).

Catholicism therefore does not say:

“Ignore Scripture and listen to the Church.”

It says:

Read Scripture within the apostolic Church that received, preserved, proclaimed, and authentically interpreted it.

4. The Church of the first centuries can be separated from the Catholic Church

Another necessary assumption is that the Christianity of the early centuries can be separated from the Catholic Church that exists today.

This often appears in the argument:

“The early Christians weren’t Roman Catholics. They were simply Christians.”

But this creates a historical problem.

The early Church possessed:

• bishops

• priests

• deacons

• the Eucharist

• baptismal regeneration

• apostolic succession

• councils

• liturgical worship

• sacramental theology

• veneration of martyrs

• a developing Marian devotion

• authoritative teaching

• a visible ecclesial structure

The early Christian Church was not an invisible collection of autonomous Bible interpreters.

Even the word “Catholic” is ancient. St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote around the beginning of the second century:

“Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”

The precise institutional and theological development of later centuries is a legitimate subject for historical investigation. But the claim that the Catholic Church simply appeared in the Middle Ages does not fit the historical evidence.

The New Testament itself portrays the Church as a visible community possessing authority, ministers, discipline, sacraments, and doctrinal teaching.

5. Doctrinal authority resides in the text alone

This is where the Catholic understanding of Scripture and Tradition becomes particularly important.

Catholicism does not teach that Tradition is a collection of human customs competing with Scripture.

The apostolic deposit was transmitted both in writing and orally.

St. Paul explicitly commands the Thessalonians:

“Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.”

— 2 Thessalonians 2:15

Notice the two modes:

by word of mouth
by letter

That distinction is significant.

The Catholic position is therefore not “Tradition instead of Scripture.”

It is:

Sacred Scripture + Sacred Tradition = the apostolic deposit of faith.

The Catholic Church teaches that Scripture and Tradition come from the same divine source and together constitute one sacred deposit entrusted to the Church.

The Council of Trent likewise taught that the Gospel comes to the Church through both the written books and traditions handed down from Christ and the Apostles.

Thus the Catholic objection to sola Scriptura is fundamentally biblical:

Why would Paul command Christians to hold fast to apostolic traditions delivered orally if only written Scripture could function as an authoritative rule of faith?

6. Christ intended a purely written rule of faith rather than a living teaching authority

Jesus certainly used Scripture.

He quoted it, fulfilled it, explained it, and appealed to it.

But He never told His apostles:

“Write down everything I teach, and whoever possesses the resulting book will possess the complete and sufficient rule of faith.”

Instead, Christ established a teaching Church.

He told Peter:

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.”

— Matthew 16:18

He gave the apostles authority to bind and loose:

“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.”

— Matthew 16:19

He later gave this authority collectively to the apostles:

“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.”

— Matthew 18:18

And after His Resurrection:

“As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.”

— John 20:21

Christ therefore did not establish merely a book.

He established a Church.

That Church was commissioned to teach.

The Catholic Catechism summarizes this relationship by teaching that the authentic interpretation of God’s Word—written or handed on—belongs to the living teaching office of the Church.

This does not place the Magisterium above God’s Word.

Quite the opposite.

The Church’s teaching office exists to serve, guard, and faithfully explain the deposit entrusted to her.

7. The Holy Spirit guarantees correct interpretation without a visible teaching authority

A Protestant may answer:

“I don’t need the Catholic Church. I have the Holy Spirit.”

Catholics absolutely agree that Christians need the Holy Spirit.

But the question becomes:

Does the Holy Spirit guarantee contradictory interpretations simultaneously?

If one Christian says:

“Baptism regenerates.”

and another says:

“Baptism is only symbolic.”

both cannot be correct in the same sense.

If one denomination teaches:

“Christ is truly present in the Eucharist.”

while another teaches:

“The Eucharist is merely symbolic.”

both cannot simultaneously represent the same doctrinal conclusion.

Yet both groups may sincerely claim the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The New Testament’s answer is not that every Christian becomes an autonomous infallible interpreter.

Instead, the Holy Spirit operates through the Church.

St. Paul calls the Church:

“the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.”

— 1 Timothy 3:15

The Catholic position is therefore not that individuals receive no illumination from the Holy Spirit.

They do.

Rather:

private illumination does not replace the public, apostolic teaching office Christ established.

8. The Church’s authority is subordinate to Scripture in a way Scripture never explicitly defines

This proposition deserves careful consideration.

Catholics certainly believe that the Church is subordinate to God’s revelation.

The Church cannot simply invent revelation.

She cannot declare that Christ was not truly God, or that the Resurrection never happened, or that the apostles taught something they did not teach.

The Church is the guardian, not the author, of divine revelation.

But sola Scriptura introduces a different claim:

that Scripture alone is the sole infallible rule of faith.

Where does Scripture explicitly teach that?

2 Timothy 3:16 says that Scripture is inspired and profitable for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness.

Catholics wholeheartedly affirm this.

But the text does not say:

“Scripture is the only infallible authority.”

Indeed, Scripture itself points beyond Scripture to apostolic teaching.

Paul tells Timothy to:

“follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me.”

— 2 Timothy 1:13

And:

“what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

— 2 Timothy 2:2

That is a chain of transmission:

Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others.

This is remarkably close to the Catholic concept of apostolic succession.

9. The biblical canon can be accepted while rejecting the authority of the Church that transmitted it

This is perhaps the most historically provocative question.

Suppose someone says:

“I accept the 27 books of the New Testament, but I reject the authority of the Catholic Church.”

The question becomes:

Why these 27 books?

Why Matthew but not the Gospel of Thomas?

Why Revelation but not the Apocalypse of Peter?

Why James but not the Shepherd of Hermas?

Why 2 Peter despite the historical debates concerning it?

The early Church had to make these distinctions.

Eusebius’s fourth-century testimony demonstrates that the process involved questions concerning which writings were genuinely apostolic and which were not.

The councils of Hippo and Carthage provide important historical examples of the Church formally listing the canonical books. The Carthaginian canon contains the four Gospels, Acts, Paul’s epistles, the Catholic Epistles, and Revelation—the same 27 books that constitute the New Testament today.

The irony of the situation is therefore obvious:

The Protestant Bible is inherited from the historic Christian Church, while the authority of that Church is rejected.

That does not logically prove every Catholic doctrine.

But it creates a serious historical question for anyone claiming that Christianity was supposed to operate according to Scripture alone.

10. Later doctrinal divergence represents a restoration rather than a departure

The final assumption is perhaps the largest:

that Protestantism represents the restoration of original Christianity rather than a departure from the historical Christian Church.

This is a historical claim, not merely a biblical one.

If Protestantism says:

“The Catholic Church corrupted Christianity, and the Reformers restored biblical Christianity,”

then the burden becomes:

When did this corruption happen?

What happened to the supposedly pure biblical Church between the apostolic age and the sixteenth century?

Was Ignatius of Antioch corrupted?

Was Irenaeus corrupted?

Was Augustine corrupted?

Was the universal sacramental structure of early Christianity corrupted?

Was the Eucharistic faith of the Fathers corrupted?

Was apostolic succession corrupted?

Was the canon itself corrupted?

And if so, where is the historical evidence for a completely different invisible Christianity surviving alongside the Catholic Church for centuries?

This is particularly important because Protestantism does not merely reject a few medieval practices.

The Reformation produced fundamental disagreements concerning:

• justification

• the sacraments

• the Eucharist

• confession

• baptism

• the priesthood

• episcopal authority

• apostolic succession

• the role of Tradition

• the canon of Scripture

• ecclesial authority

The Catholic claim is therefore not simply:

“Protestants disagree with Catholics.”

It is:

The Protestant principle of sola Scriptura itself creates the problem of determining which interpretation of Scripture represents authentic apostolic Christianity.

The Deeper Problem: Who Has the Right to Interpret the Book?

The Catholic argument ultimately comes down to authority.

Imagine receiving a constitution without any institution authorized to interpret it.

Every faction could claim:

“We simply follow the text.”

But if the factions reach contradictory conclusions, the text alone does not settle the dispute unless there is an agreed interpretive authority.

The Catholic Church claims that Christ solved this problem by establishing a visible apostolic Church.

That Church possesses:

Sacred Scripture — the inspired written Word of God.

Sacred Tradition — the apostolic faith handed down in the Church.

The Magisterium — the living teaching office entrusted with authentically interpreting God’s Word.

These are not three competing revelations.

They are three interconnected elements of the one divine economy of revelation.

The Second Vatican Council’s Dei Verbum expresses this explicitly: Scripture and Tradition constitute one sacred deposit entrusted to the Church, while the Magisterium authentically interprets the Word of God written or handed on. It also insists that the Magisterium is not above the Word of God but serves it.

The same basic Catholic framework is reflected in the Catechism: Christ’s revelation was handed on through preaching and writing, Scripture and Tradition form one deposit, and the Church continues to transmit that faith through her doctrine, life, and worship.

The Bible Did Not Fall From Heaven

This is the crucial point.

The Catholic Church does not claim to have written the Bible in the sense of inventing its contents.

God is the ultimate author of Sacred Scripture.

The human authors were genuinely inspired by the Holy Spirit.

But those Scriptures arose within the apostolic Church, were transmitted within the Church, preserved within the Church, proclaimed within the Church, and ultimately discerned as canonical within the Church.

The Catechism teaches that the books of Scripture are canonical because they are inspired by God and handed on to the Church herself.

So the Catholic argument should not be reduced to:

“The Catholic Church wrote the Bible.”

A more historically precise formulation is:

“God inspired the Scriptures; the apostles and their collaborators wrote them; the Church preserved and transmitted them; and the Church discerned and defined the canon.”

That formulation is both stronger and more accurate.

Conclusion: You Cannot Separate the Bible from Its Apostolic Context

The fundamental Catholic challenge to sola Scriptura is not an attack on Scripture.

It is an appeal to the full biblical picture.

The New Testament presents:

Christ → Apostles → Church → apostolic teaching → Scripture and Tradition → successors of the Apostles.

It does not present:

Christ → Bible → autonomous individual interpreter.

The Bible itself came to us through the historical Church.

The canon had to be discerned.

The Scriptures had to be preserved.

The apostolic faith had to be transmitted.

Doctrinal disputes had to be resolved.

And the Church had to continue teaching after the apostles died.

This is why the Catholic Church does not ask Christians to choose between Christ and His Church, or between Scripture and Tradition.

She asks Christians to receive the whole apostolic inheritance.

As Dei Verbum puts it, Scripture, Tradition, and the Church’s teaching authority are so closely united that they cannot properly be treated as isolated realities.

The issue, then, is not:

“Bible or Church?”

The Catholic answer is:

The Bible came from the apostolic Church, was preserved by the apostolic Church, was canonized within the apostolic Church, and is authentically understood within the apostolic Church.

Dear Readers,

Often Protestants will use the reality of Christs unique role as mediator between God and man as a divide - as though there can thus be no other participation in that reality. This is false.

Christ is the light of the world and the fullness of the truth. And yet he tells explicitly “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16 . In this we simply participate in His light ! Our light or truth is not a reality somehow independant from Him.

And so it becomes clear that the Protestant anti-catholic polemic in the false exegesis of “One Mediator”.

Another example of the Protestant construct of anti Catholicism is the false exegesis on how Protestants try to use the phrase one mediator against Catholics.

They isolate First Timothy chapter two verse five. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).

This is quoted to claim any intercession or mediation besides Christ is forbidden especially asking saints in heaven to pray for us. Yet the very same passage begins with Paul urging supplications prayers intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men (1 Tim 2:1).

The word intercessions is a form of mediation. Paul commands believers to mediate through prayer for others. If verse five banned all subordinate mediation Paul would contradict himself in the opening verses.

Catholics fully affirm Christ as the one unique mediator. He alone reconciles us to the Father through his sacrifice. Saints and believers participate subordinately in that one mediation. We intercede through him as members of his body the church. This is the same as asking living Christians to pray for us which Protestants do without issue.

There is one mediator between us and the first person of the Trinity. That is the second person of the Trinity our high priest Jesus Christ (1 Tim 2:5). He alone reconciles humanity to the Father through his unique sacrifice and priestly mediation.

Yet scripture shows that those baptized into the body of Christ are made present in the heavenly reality. We have come to Mount Zion to the city of the living God the heavenly Jerusalem to an innumerable company of angels to the general assembly and church of the firstborn enrolled in heaven to God the judge of all to the spirits of just men made perfect and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant (Heb 12:22-24). Baptism unites us to Christ and incorporates us into his mystical body the church which spans earth and heaven. This makes the baptized present in this heavenly assembly where the spirits of the just made perfect surround us.

We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses (Heb 12:1). This cloud is the faithful departed who have run the race before us. They bear witness to faith and encourage us in our struggles. In humility and with understanding of the power of prayer why can we not ask these spirits of the just to pray with us or ask them for their prayers? Asking for intercession is not bypassing Christ. It is participating in his one mediation. Just as we ask living brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for us (Jas 5:16) we ask those perfected in heaven. They are more alive in Christ more united to him and more capable of interceding through him.

The prayers of the saints rise like the smoke of incense before God (Rev 5:8 Rev 8:3-4). In heavenly worship the elders and angels offer golden bowls full of incense which are the prayers of the saints. This shows the communion of saints where the prayers of Gods people on earth are presented in heaven. The saints in glory join in this offering uniting their intercession to Christs.

Do you not believe or see this because you do not have the faith to believe the mystical body is more than a metaphor? Scripture presents it as a living reality. We are one body in Christ (1 Cor 12:12-27). Death does not sever this union. The head is Christ who is alive forever. The members in heaven remain connected through him. The cloud of witnesses surrounds us the spirits of the just are present in the heavenly Jerusalem. In faith we recognize this mystical body as real not mere symbol. Honest reading of these passages affirms the Catholic truth of the communion of saints where we humbly seek the prayers of those perfected in Christ knowing all mediation flows through our one high priest Jesus.

The early Church Fathers understood this verse in harmony with the sacrificial worship of the Mass. St John Chrysostom in his homilies on First Timothy explains the unique mediation of Christ as the incarnate God-man who alone bridges divinity and humanity yet this does not exclude the churchs participation in prayer and offering. St Cyril of Jerusalem in his Catechetical Lectures refers to the Eucharist as the offering made through Christ the one mediator drawing on First Timothy to affirm the Mass as the true worship where thanksgiving is offered through him.

The pattern continues with thanksgiving. Paul lists supplications prayers intercessions and thanksgivings (1 Tim 2:1).

The Greek word for thanksgiving is eucharistia. It is the direct root of the word Eucharist.

Eucharistia means thanksgiving. The Eucharist is the ultimate thank offering. It is the supreme act of thanksgiving to the Father for the redemption won on the cross.

In the Mass the church offers thanksgiving through Christ the high priest. This thanksgiving is united to the sin offering of the cross. The Eucharist makes present the one sacrifice of Calvary in an unbloody manner.

It is the true Passover anamnesis. Anamnesis means remembrance but in biblical liturgy it is not mere mental recall. It is a real making present of the saving event. Jesus commanded do this in remembrance of me (Luke 22:19 1 Cor 11:24-25). The apostles understood this as the liturgical re-presentation of his Passover sacrifice.

Paul confirms this when he writes for as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup you proclaim the Lords death until he comes (1 Cor 11:26).

The proclamation is the anamnesis. The Eucharist proclaims and makes present the Lords death. It is the thank offering for the sin offering. The body and blood are offered in thanksgiving for the redemption achieved once for all on the cross.

Malachi foretold this from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the Gentiles in every place incense is offered to my name and a pure offering (Mal 1:11).

The pure offering is the clean oblation. Early church fathers saw this as the worldwide Eucharistic sacrifice. It is the thank offering among the Gentiles replacing the old sacrifices.

This false exegesis of First Timothy two five to forbid asking saints in heaven to pray for us began in Protestant history during the Reformation. Reformers like John Calvin in his Institutes rejected invocation of saints arguing it undermined Christs sole mediation. This was part of the broader anti-Catholic reaction against practices seen as Roman corruptions though the early church universally practiced asking for the intercession of martyrs and saints from at least the third century onward.

Protestant literalism ignores this context. It separates verse five from the command to intercede and give thanks. It overlooks eucharistia as the liturgical thanksgiving tied to the sacrifice. Honest exegesis shows the text supports the Catholic reality. Christ is the one mediator. His body the church participates in his mediation through prayer and in his sacrifice through the Eucharistic thanksgiving. The scriptures consistently affirm the fullness of this truth in the Catholic faith.

Whenever Catholics bring up the topic of confession Protestants will often put forward the objection, “why do we need to go to a priest when we can go straight to Jesus”!

The objection sounds legitimate until we actually look at what Jesus Himself taught us !

How Did Jesus Want Us to Confess Our Sins?

The question is simple: Did Jesus intend us to confess our sins directly to God alone—or did He establish a ministry through which His forgiveness would be given through His Apostles and their successors?

Look carefully at what Jesus actually said.

1. Jesus gave the Apostles authority to forgive sins

After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the Apostles and said:

“As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
— John 20:21

Then He did something extraordinary:

“He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’”
— John 20:22–23

Notice what Jesus did not say:

“If anyone confesses directly to Me, tell them their sins are forgiven.”

Instead, He entrusted the Apostles with a genuine authority concerning the forgiveness of sins:

“If YOU forgive… they are forgiven.”

And:

“If YOU retain… they are retained.”

That distinction is crucial.

If the Apostles were merely preaching that God forgives sins, there would be no reason for Christ to give them the authority to retain sins as well as forgive them.

The language makes much more sense if Christ intended them to exercise a real ministry of reconciliation.

2. But doesn’t God alone forgive sins?

Yes.

Catholics absolutely believe that God alone is the ultimate source of forgiveness.

That is precisely why the Pharisees reacted when Jesus forgave sins:

“Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
— Mark 2:7

They were correct that God alone has the divine authority to forgive sins.

But they missed something crucial:

Jesus is God—and Jesus can communicate His divine authority to His ministers.

The same principle appears throughout Scripture.

God alone saves, yet He uses human missionaries.

God alone heals, yet He uses physicians and other instruments.

God alone baptizes interiorly with grace, yet He commands His ministers to baptize with water.

And God alone forgives sins, yet Christ explicitly gives His Apostles authority to forgive and retain sins.

The priest does not replace Christ.

The priest is Christ’s instrument.

3. The Apostles were sent to continue Christ’s ministry

Jesus didn’t merely give this authority to the Apostles for one afternoon.

He said:

“As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

The Apostles were commissioned to continue Christ’s visible ministry.

And Scripture shows the Apostolic ministry being continued through ordained ministers:

“What you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2

This is the basic principle of Apostolic succession:

Christ → Apostles → their successors → priests and bishops today.

Therefore, when a Catholic confesses to a priest, he isn’t confessing to a random man who decided he wanted to hear people’s sins.

He is approaching a minister who participates in the Apostolic ministry Christ established.

4. Scripture actually speaks of confessing sins to other people

James writes:

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”
— James 5:16

The Catholic practice of confessing sins is therefore not some medieval invention.

The New Testament explicitly speaks of confessing sins to others.

There is also evidence of public confession associated with the Apostolic ministry:

“Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.”
— Acts 19:18

And John the Baptist’s ministry involved people publicly acknowledging their sins:

“They were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.”
— Matthew 3:6

These passages do not, by themselves, establish every detail of the later sacrament of Penance.

But they certainly demonstrate that the biblical concept of confessing one’s sins out loud and in the presence of God’s ministers or other believers is not foreign to Christianity.

5. 1 John 1:9 and John 20:23 fit together

Consider these two passages:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
— 1 John 1:9

And:

“If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
— John 20:23

There is no contradiction.

God is the source of forgiveness.

Christ is the author of the sacrament.

The priest is the minister.

The priest does not forgive sins by his own divine power.

He forgives them in the authority Christ gave to His Apostles and their successors.

This is why Catholics traditionally describe the priest as acting in persona Christi—“in the person of Christ.”

6. Why would Jesus require confession to another person?

Because Christ knows what human beings are like.

Sacramental confession gives us at least three things:

Assurance

Instead of wondering:

“Has God really forgiven me?”

the penitent hears the minister of Christ pronounce absolution.

Christ gave His Church authority to forgive sins precisely so that His people could receive an objective sign and declaration of His mercy.

Accountability

Sin thrives in secrecy.

Confessing our sins aloud forces us to confront what we have actually done.

The priest can also offer counsel, correction, and practical guidance to help the penitent avoid falling into the same sins.

Humility

Pride is at the heart of sin.

Remember the serpent’s temptation:

“You will be like God.”
— Genesis 3:5

Sin tells us:

“I decide for myself.”

Confession requires us to humble ourselves and admit:

“I was wrong. I sinned. I need God’s mercy.”

That is spiritually therapeutic.

7. Jesus uses physical signs because we are body and soul

Christianity is not merely an invisible relationship between a disembodied spirit and God.

Christ gave us visible sacraments communicating invisible grace.

Consider:

Baptism:
Water + God’s grace.

Eucharist:
Bread and wine + Christ’s Body and Blood.

Confession:
The penitent’s spoken confession + the priest’s spoken absolution.

God could have chosen to communicate His grace in countless ways.

But this is the way Christ chose to establish His sacramental ministry.

So am I “skipping Jesus” by confessing to a priest?

No. Quite the opposite.

When I confess my sins to a priest, I am not bypassing Jesus to reach a human being.

I am going to Christ through the means Christ Himself established.

Jesus said:

“If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.”
— John 20:23

So the Catholic does not say:

“I don’t need Jesus. I’ll confess to a priest.”

The Catholic says:

“I need Jesus—and I will receive His forgiveness through the sacramental ministry He gave to His Church.”

God forgives.

Christ established the sacrament.

The Holy Ghost gives it power.

The priest ministers it.

And the sinner receives God’s mercy.

The priest is not the source of forgiveness.

Christ is.

The priest is the instrument Christ chose to use.

So when I go to Confession, I am not skipping Jesus.

I am obeying Jesus.

Apostolic Succession: The Mark of the True Church

The Church Christ Founded Must Be Apostolic

In the Creed we profess our belief in “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.”

These four marks are not merely admirable characteristics of Christianity. They identify the Church founded by Jesus Christ and distinguish her from religious bodies that arose independently of the apostolic foundation.

If Christ founded one visible Church, then that Church must possess the marks He gave her: unity, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity.

Of these, apostolicity is especially important because it establishes the Church’s historical and ministerial continuity with the Apostles themselves.

St. Paul writes:

“You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.”
— Ephesians 2:19–20

The Church, therefore, is not an institution invented by later Christians. She is built upon a definite foundation: Jesus Christ and the Apostles whom He commissioned.

The Catholic claim is that the Church founded by Christ must therefore remain connected to those Apostles—not merely by claiming to believe what they taught, but through a genuine continuity of doctrine, sacramental ministry, ecclesiastical authority, and mission.

What Is Apostolic Succession?

Apostolic succession is the lawful continuation of the apostolic ministry through the bishops who succeed the Apostles.

It is not merely a genealogical chain of men. Nor is it simply the possession of valid ordination.

In its fullest Catholic sense, apostolic succession means the continuation of the Church’s apostolic ministry through a legitimate succession of pastors who preserve the same apostolic faith, the sacramental order established by Christ, and the mission entrusted to the Apostles.

The Catechism summarizes this principle clearly: Christ entrusted His mission to the Apostles, and the Apostles left bishops as their successors so that the Gospel and apostolic ministry would continue throughout the ages.

Thus the Catholic Church does not merely claim:

“We believe what the Apostles believed.”

She claims something much stronger:

“We are the historical Church whose bishops, doctrine, sacraments, and mission descend from the Apostles.”

That distinction is fundamental.

Apostolicity Requires Lawful Mission

Sacred Scripture repeatedly teaches that divine ministry is not something a person simply appoints himself to perform.

St. Paul asks:

“How shall they preach, unless they be sent?”
— Romans 10:15

And God Himself says through the prophet Jeremiah:

“I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”
— Jeremiah 23:21

The principle is clear: divine authority requires divine mission.

The same principle applies to the sacred ministry.

St. Paul writes:

“No man takes the honor to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was.”
— Hebrews 5:4

The priesthood is therefore not something that a Christian simply assumes for himself.

Christ entrusted His Apostles with a mission:

“As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.”
— John 20:21

The Apostles then transmitted their ministry to others.

St. Paul demonstrates this principle explicitly in his instruction to Titus:

“For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee.”
— Titus 1:5

Here we see an apostolic minister exercising authority to establish ministers who will continue the Church’s work.

This is precisely the principle of succession.

Christ sends the Apostles.

The Apostles establish ministers.

Those ministers continue the apostolic ministry.

The Church therefore does not begin anew with every generation.

Apostolic Succession Preserves More Than Ordination

It is important to make a distinction.

Apostolic succession is not simply the possession of valid Holy Orders.

A man may possess valid orders without possessing legitimate jurisdiction or full communion with the Catholic Church.

Consequently, apostolicity must be understood in a fuller sense.

The Church must preserve:

1. Apostolic Doctrine
The same faith handed down from Christ through the Apostles.

2. Apostolic Orders
The sacramental ministry transmitted through legitimate episcopal succession.

3. Apostolic Mission
The authority to teach, sanctify, and govern that comes from Christ through the apostolic ministry.

4. Ecclesial Communion
The unity of the bishops with the Church and, above all, with the successor of St. Peter.

The Catechism describes the Church as apostolic precisely in these dimensions: she is founded upon the Apostles, preserves their teaching, and continues to be taught, sanctified, and governed through their successors—the bishops—in communion with the successor of Peter.

Thus apostolic succession is not merely a chain of hands.

It is a chain of mission, doctrine, sacramental ministry, and ecclesial authority.

Christ the New Moses

The apostolic structure of the Church becomes even clearer when we consider the relationship between the Old Covenant and the New.

Christ is the New Moses.

The Old Testament foreshadowed the Church that Christ would establish.

Moses gathered the people of God and established a visible order of worship, priesthood, teaching, and governance.

Christ likewise established a visible society.

The Gospel presents several striking parallels.

There were:

• The many disciples — corresponding broadly to the people of Israel.

• The seventy disciples — recalling the seventy elders associated with Moses.

• The Twelve Apostles — corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel.

• Peter, James, and John — forming Christ’s inner circle in a manner reminiscent of Moses’ privileged companions.

The number twelve is particularly significant.

Christ did not randomly choose twelve Apostles.

He deliberately established Twelve as foundational figures of the New Israel.

This becomes especially clear after Judas’ death.

In Acts 1, St. Peter insists that Judas’ place must be filled. Matthias is chosen so that the apostolic college might be restored.

The Apostles were therefore not merely twelve temporary preachers.

They were foundational officers of the visible Church Christ was establishing.

St. John later sees the heavenly Jerusalem described as having twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve Apostles (Revelation 21:14).

The symbolism is unmistakable: the Church is permanently apostolic because her foundation is apostolic.

The Apostles Were Not Meant to Disappear Without Successors

Christ promised to remain with His Church:

“Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”
— Matthew 28:20

Yet the original Apostles would eventually die.

If Christ intended the apostolic ministry to disappear with them, then the visible pastoral government of the Church would have had no permanent continuation.

But Scripture presents precisely the opposite.

St. Paul instructs Timothy to preserve what he has received and transmit it to others:

“The things which thou hast heard of me by many witnesses, the same commend to faithful men, who shall be fit to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2

Notice the progression:

Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others.

This is transmission.

This is continuity.

This is the principle of apostolic succession.

The Catholic Church therefore understands the bishops not as men who invented a new ecclesiastical office after the Apostles, but as those who continue the apostolic ministry in the Church.

The Catechism explicitly teaches that the Apostles designated successors to continue and consolidate the work they had begun, and that the episcopal office continues their pastoral ministry without interruption.

The Apostles and Their Successors Are Not Identical

At the same time, Catholic theology makes an important distinction.

The bishops succeed the Apostles in their office, but they do not inherit every extraordinary privilege possessed by the Apostles personally.

The Apostles were unique witnesses of Christ’s Resurrection and occupied a foundational role in establishing the Church.

Public Revelation itself was completed with the death of the last Apostle.

The bishops, however, are not new Apostles receiving new public revelation.

Their task is to preserve, explain, defend, and transmit the deposit of faith entrusted to the Church.

This is why Apostolic Tradition is so important.

The Church does not claim that every later teaching was delivered as a new revelation. Rather, she holds that the one apostolic deposit can be faithfully transmitted, clarified, and more precisely expressed as new questions arise.

The Catechism teaches that apostolic Tradition continues through the Church’s doctrine, life, and worship, preserving and transmitting what the Church received from the Apostles.

The Acorn and the Oak

This helps explain the famous analogy associated with Cardinal John Henry Newman.

An acorn does not look like the oak tree into which it develops.

Yet the oak is not a different organism that replaced the acorn.

It is the same living organism brought to maturity.

Likewise, the Catholic Church of the first century and the Catholic Church of later centuries need not possess identical external forms in order to be historically and organically continuous.

The Church can grow in her understanding, discipline, liturgy, theological terminology, and institutional expression while remaining faithful to the same apostolic deposit.

What cannot change is the substance of the Faith itself.

Development is not contradiction.

Clarification is not invention.

Growth is not abandonment of the original.

The Holy Ghost guides the Church into a deeper understanding of the truth Christ entrusted to the Apostles.

Our Lord Himself told the Apostles:

“When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth.”
— John 16:13

The Church’s historical development must therefore be understood as organic development within continuity, not as the replacement of apostolic Christianity with something fundamentally different.

Apostolic Succession and the Four Marks of the Church

Apostolic succession also illuminates the four marks of the Church.

One

The Church possesses a visible structure of unity centered upon the apostolic faith and communion.

Holy

The Church possesses the means of sanctification instituted by Christ, especially the Sacraments.

Catholic

The Church preserves the same apostolic faith throughout the world and throughout history.

Apostolic

The Church remains rooted in the Apostles through their doctrine, sacramental ministry, pastoral office, and legitimate succession.

These marks are therefore not isolated characteristics.

They reinforce one another.

The Church is one because she remains united in the apostolic faith and communion.

She is holy because Christ entrusted her with the means of sanctification.

She is Catholic because the apostolic faith is universal in space and time.

She is apostolic because she remains historically and spiritually connected to the Apostles.

What About Churches That Claim Apostolic Succession?

At this point an important objection arises.

The Catholic Church is not the only Christian body to claim some form of apostolic succession.

Eastern Orthodox Christians, for example, possess bishops and a genuine historical episcopal succession.

Therefore, merely saying:

“We have bishops who descend from the Apostles”

does not by itself settle every question concerning the identity of the Church Christ founded.

The Catholic argument must go further.

The Church founded by Christ is not only apostolic in orders.

She must also be apostolic in faith, communion, and mission.

This is why Catholic ecclesiology connects the apostolic college with Peter.

Christ did not establish twelve independent churches.

He established one Church and placed Peter in a unique position within the apostolic college:

“Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church.”
— Matthew 16:18

And to Peter He entrusted the task:

“Feed my lambs... Feed my sheep.”
— John 21:15–17

The Catholic claim is therefore not simply that the Catholic bishops possess an historical chain of ordination.

It is that the Church possesses the fullness of apostolic succession in communion with the successor of Peter.

The Catechism likewise identifies the apostolic Church as one governed by the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter.

Valid Orders Are Not the Same as Full Ecclesial Communion

This distinction is especially important when considering schism.

A separated community may retain elements of the apostolic ministry while nevertheless being separated from the fullness of Catholic communion.

Consequently, validity and legitimacy must not be confused.

The Catholic Church teaches that the sacrament of Holy Orders is transmitted through the apostolic line and that bishops are the successors of the Apostles.

But apostolic succession is more than the bare fact that a sacramental ceremony can be traced backward.

The fullness of apostolicity includes communion in the apostolic faith and ecclesial order.

Thus, the Catholic position can distinguish between:

valid orders

and

full ecclesial communion.

This is why the mere existence of bishops does not automatically prove that a separated body possesses the fullness of the Church founded by Christ.

The Witness of the Fathers

This understanding was not invented in the Middle Ages.

The Fathers of the Church repeatedly appealed to apostolic succession when defending the true faith against heresy and schism.

St. Irenaeus famously appealed to the succession of bishops as a public means of identifying the authentic apostolic teaching.

St. Cyprian likewise emphasized the unity of the Church and the necessity of remaining within the ecclesial order established through lawful succession.

The principle was simple:

Where did this doctrine come from?

Who taught it?

Who authorized those teachers?

Can their ministry be traced back to the Apostles?

This was especially important because heretics could claim to possess Scripture.

The Catholic response was not merely to debate isolated biblical verses.

The Church could point to the historical succession of her bishops and say:

This is the Church that received the Scriptures, preserved the apostolic faith, celebrated the Sacraments, and handed the faith from one generation to another.

The Fathers therefore understood apostolic succession as a safeguard against privately invented Christianity.

The Church Is Not Re-founded in Every Generation

This has enormous implications for the modern Christian world.

If Christ founded a Church, then Christians should not have to rediscover that Church from scratch.

They should not have to ask:

“Which interpretation of the Bible do I personally find most convincing?”

The question must be deeper:

“Which Church did Christ establish, and where does that Church still exist?”

Apostolic succession provides an objective historical principle for answering that question.

The early Christians did not possess thousands of competing denominations.

They belonged to a visible Church with bishops, priests, deacons, sacraments, doctrine, worship, discipline, and apostolic authority.

That Church did not vanish.

She continued through history.

The Catholic Church therefore does not claim merely to resemble the early Church.

She claims to be organically continuous with her.

The Church of the Apostles and the Catholic Church of today are connected by an uninterrupted historical and sacramental continuity.

The Church has grown.

She has developed.

She has faced heresies, persecutions, schisms, councils, controversies, and cultural changes.

But the fundamental organism remains.

The Catholic Church and the Test of History

This gives us a powerful apologetic principle.

Suppose someone claims to represent the Church founded by Christ.

We can ask:

Where is your apostolic foundation?

Where is your succession of pastors?

Where is your historical continuity?

Where is the same apostolic faith?

Where are the Sacraments transmitted through the apostolic ministry?

Where is the Church’s legitimate mission?

Where is the visible unity Christ intended for His Church?

The Catholic Church can answer these questions by pointing backward through history.

Her bishops do not trace their authority merely to a sixteenth-century reformer, an eighteenth-century revivalist, a nineteenth-century preacher, or a modern interpretation of Scripture.

Their ministry claims continuity with the ancient Church and ultimately with the Apostles themselves.

That continuity is not an accidental historical curiosity.

It is part of what the Church is.

Apostolic Succession Is the Continuity of Christ’s Mission

Ultimately, apostolic succession is about Christ.

Christ did not merely leave behind a book.

He established a Church.

He chose Apostles.

He gave them authority.

He sent them to preach.

He entrusted them with the Sacraments.

He commanded them to teach.

He promised to remain with His Church.

And He provided that their ministry would continue.

The Church therefore remains apostolic because Christ’s mission continues through the ministry of the Apostles’ successors.

As the Catechism puts it, Christ continues to act through the bishops, who exercise the apostolic ministry today.

The chain ultimately leads back to Christ:

Christ → Apostles → Apostolic successors → Bishops → the Church today.

And this succession involves more than the laying on of hands.

It is the transmission of:

Doctrine.
Sacraments.
Mission.
Pastoral authority.
Ecclesial communion.

That is the Catholic understanding of Apostolic Succession.

Conclusion: The Church That Christ Founded

The Catholic Church therefore does not claim to be apostolic merely because she uses the word apostolic in her name.

She claims to be apostolic because she possesses what the word signifies.

She is founded upon the Apostles.

She preserves their doctrine.

She possesses the apostolic ministry.

Her bishops succeed the Apostles.

Her Sacraments continue the sacramental life entrusted to the Church.

Her mission continues the mission Christ gave to the Apostles.

And her bishops remain united with the successor of St. Peter.

The Church of Christ is not a theological abstraction.

She is a historical reality.

She did not disappear after the Apostles died.

She did not need to be rediscovered centuries later.

She continued.

And the question confronting every Christian is therefore not merely:

“Do I believe the Bible?”

The deeper question is:

“Which Church received the apostolic faith, preserved it, and continues the apostolic mission Christ Himself established?”

For the Catholic, the answer is found in the Church that can trace her doctrine, her sacraments, her ministry, and her mission back through the centuries to the Apostles—and ultimately to Jesus Christ Himself, the Founder and Head of His Church.

The Catholic Church is not merely a church that claims apostolic succession.

She claims to be the Church that Christ founded, continuing His apostolic mission through history.

THE POPE IS NOT “INFALLIBLE” IN EVERYTHING HE SAYS ! - THIS THE CATHOLIC POSITION !

Catholics do NOT believe that the Pope is an infallible man.

This is because she acknowledges that the Popes can:

• Make bad decisions
• Exercise terrible judgment
• Express erroneous personal opinions
• Make political mistakes
• Give imprudent advice
• Sin and sin greviously
• Govern badly
• Misunderstand particular matters
• Even be wrong in theological opinions that are not definitively taught by the Church

Church history gives us plenty of examples of imperfect popes.

SO WHAT DOES “PAPAL INFALLIBILITY” ACTUALLY MEAN?

Papal infallibility is a very limited protection from doctrinal error.

According to the Catholic doctrine defined at Vatican I, the Pope is preserved from error when, acting as supreme shepherd and teacher of all the faithful, he definitively proclaims a doctrine concerning faith or morals that is to be held by the whole Church.

That is a far cry from:

“Everything the Pope says is automatically true.”

It means the Pope is not personally incapable of error.

It means that Christ protects His Church from being bound to error when the Pope solemnly defines a doctrine of faith or morals for the universal Church.

Therefore:

His political opinions? Fallible.
His personal theological opinions? Fallible.
His prudential judgments? Fallible.
His judgments concerning particular people? Fallible.
His interviews and casual remarks? Fallible.
His administrative decisions? Fallible.
His personal conduct? Fallible—and capable of sin.

THE COMMON OBJECTION

“But Pope X was wrong about ______!”

That may demonstrate that Pope X was wrong about something.

It does not, by itself, refute papal infallibility.

Why?

Because Catholicism has never taught that every papal statement is infallible.

The real question is:

Was the Pope exercising the specific authority to which Christ attached the Church’s protection from error?

If not, the doctrine of papal infallibility is not even being tested.

Dear Readers,

At times Protestants will ask us, if scripture alone is not sufficient, what else must we believe that is not explicitly laid out in scripture.

I will give some time to answer this point in our article today.

That said, our response here, should first be to ask, where in scripture does it say, that what we must believe is to be found in scripture alone?

Well there answer is nowhere!

What is more is that the people of God from the very beginning where never a bible only people. God always from the very beginning worked through the Patriarchs, the Prophets, the high Priests, the priests etc to guide, lead and direct his people. It was never through scripture alone. And rejecting those whom He had set over the people as an authority was akin to rejecting Him.

Our Lord Himself build on this reality points out in St. Matthews’s gospel saying:

“If thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shall gain thy brother. And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican” [Matthew 18:17]

No of his listeners where scandalized by these words because this was already the practice in Our Lords time. Israel (the Old Testament Church) had a real authority. Its foundation wasn’t scripture, it foundation rested on God who lead His Church by means of the hierarchical authority he had well established.

Hence, we can grasp why Christ tells the new pillars of His Church, the 12 Apostles, (set up to replace the 12 tribes of Israel) “He that hears you, hears me; and he that despises you, despises me; and he that despises me, despises him that sent me.” - Luke 10:16

He never once said, He that rejects the bible rejects me, simply because the people of God where never historically a people of the bible only, they were however always a people guided by the established authorities that God had placed over them.

That said; let us be very clear; The Catholic Church does not teach that Tradition is something added to Scripture. But the Catholic Church teaches that Christ entrusted the Apostles with the fullness of the Christian faith, and the Apostles handed that faith on both in writing and orally.

Let us look at giving some clarity on a few things before we put foward a full response to the question.

1. St. Paul explicitly commands Christians to hold BOTH written and oral Tradition

This is perhaps the most direct passage:

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:14

Paul identifies two forms of apostolic transmission:

BY WORD — oral apostolic teaching
BY EPISTLE — written apostolic teaching

And what does Paul tell Christians to do?

Hold fast to both.

Notice what Paul does not say:

“Hold only the traditions that have been written down.”

That idea has to be imported into the text.

2. Scripture itself came from the Church’s apostolic Tradition

Consider the New Testament. Where does Scripture tell us which books belong in Scripture?

Where is the inspired table of contents?

Where does Jesus give us a list of the 27 books of the New Testament?

Nowhere.

Christ established His Church and commissioned His Apostles to teach.

The Church subsequently received, preserved, recognized, and transmitted the inspired Scriptures.

Therefore, even the Christian who says:

“I believe only in Scripture”

must first answer:

“How do you know which books are Scripture?”

The answer cannot simply be:

“Because the Bible says so.”

The Bible does not contain a canonical list of itself !

3. The Apostles preached before they wrote

The Christian faith did not begin with the New Testament.

The Apostles preached the Gospel before the New Testament existed.

St. Paul says:

“For I delivered unto you first of all, that which I also received.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3

Paul received apostolic teaching and then handed it on.

Likewise:

“The things which thou hast heard of me by many witnesses, the same commend to faithful men, who shall be fit to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2

Notice the chain:

Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others

That is transmission of apostolic teaching.

4. Not everything the Apostles taught was written in Scripture

St. John tells us something extremely important:

“Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book.”
— John 20:30

And again:

“But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if every one of them were written, every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written.”
— John 21:25

Therefore, Christianity never operated according to the principle:

“If it isn’t written in the New Testament, it isn’t apostolic.”

The Apostles taught far more than what was eventually committed to writing.

5. The early Christians did not practice Christianity as “Bible alone”

This becomes especially obvious when we examine the earliest post-apostolic Christians.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, writing around the beginning of the second century, speaks repeatedly of the bishop, presbytery, and deacons.

He commands Christians to remain united with their bishop and describes the Eucharist as the flesh of Christ.

That is remarkably close to Catholic Christianity—and this is only a generation or two removed from the Apostles.

The question therefore becomes:

Where did these Christians get this understanding?

The simplest historical answer is:

They received it from the Apostolic Church.

6. The Bible does not contain a complete description of the Mass

Jesus commanded:

“Do this for a commemoration of me.”
— Luke 22:19

But where does Scripture provide the complete Eucharistic liturgy?

Where are all the prayers? Where are the liturgical vestments?

Where is the precise order of worship? Where are all the Eucharistic prayers?

Where are the ceremonies? Where is the liturgical calendar?

It isn’t there. Yet Christians worshipped.

They celebrated the Eucharist. They baptized. They ordained ministers.

They appointed bishops. They prayed. They fasted. They transmitted doctrine.

The practical life of the Church could not possibly have depended upon a complete written liturgical manual !

Much of this was handed down through the living Church.

7. “But the Bible is sufficient!”

A Protestant may respond:

“2 Timothy 3:16–17 says Scripture is sufficient.”

But notice what the passage actually says:

“All scripture is inspired of God, and profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice: That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work.”

Scripture is indeed inspired and immensely profitable.

Catholics wholeheartedly affirm that.

But the passage does not say:

“Only Scripture is the sole infallible rule of faith.”

Nor does it say:

“No apostolic teaching exists outside Scripture.”

In fact, Paul had already commanded Christians to hold apostolic traditions transmitted by word as well as by letter.

8. The Church is called the “pillar and ground of the truth”

St. Paul writes:

“But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
— 1 Timothy 3:15

Notice the biblical description.

Paul does not call Scripture:

“the pillar and ground of the truth.”

He calls the Church:

“the pillar and ground of the truth.”

The Bible belongs within the life of the Church that received and preserved it.

9. Sacred Tradition is NOT merely human tradition”

This distinction is essential.

Jesus condemned traditions that contradicted God’s commandments:

“You have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.”
— Matthew 15:6

Catholics completely agree with Christ.

The Catholic Church does not claim that every human custom is Sacred Tradition.

There is a difference between:

Human traditions
customs created by men which may be changed or rejected

and

Sacred Tradition
the apostolic faith handed down from Christ through the Apostles and preserved in the Church.

The former can be discarded.

The latter must be preserved.

10. The real problem with Sola Scriptura

Here is the fundamental difficulty.

Ask:

“Where does Scripture teach Sola Scriptura?”

Not:

“Can you find verses that support Scripture’s authority?”

Of course you can.

The question is:

Where does Scripture teach that Scripture is the ONLY infallible rule of faith?

There is no such verse.

Instead, Scripture commands Christians to:

Believe the apostolic preaching. Hold fast to apostolic traditions.
Guard the deposit of faith. Receive oral teaching.
Listen to the Church.

And Christ did not leave His followers with a book alone.

He established a Church.

“He that heareth you, heareth me.”
— Luke 10:16

“If he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.”
— Matthew 18:17

Christ gave His Church authority to teach.

THE CATHOLIC POSITION

Therefore, the Catholic position is not:

Bible OR Tradition

It is:

SACRED SCRIPTURE + SACRED TRADITION + THE MAGISTERIUM OF THE CHURCH

These are not three competing sources of revelation.

They belong to the one Deposit of Faith entrusted by Christ to His Apostles and preserved in His Church.

Scripture

The inspired written Word of God.

Tradition

The apostolic faith handed down in the Church, both orally and through her life and worship.

Magisterium

The teaching authority of the Church established by Christ to authentically preserve and interpret the Deposit of Faith.

THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH DID NOT SAY:

“Give me a Bible and let every Christian independently determine Christianity.”

Rather, the Apostles established Churches, appointed bishops, ordained ministers, preached the Gospel, celebrated the Eucharist, baptized converts, and transmitted the faith.

That is why the Catholic argument ultimately comes down to one profound question:

If Christ established an Apostolic Church, why would Christians reject the very Apostolic Tradition through which that Church preserved the faith and even transmitted the Scriptures themselves?

The Catholic does not have to choose between the Bible and Tradition.

The Catholic receives the Bible within the Apostolic Tradition of the Church that Christ established.

The Bible did not create the Church.

Christ created the Church—and the Church received, preserved, proclaimed, and transmitted the Bible.

It is clear beyond a doubt that Christ and His Church by a divine power changed the face of earth in so many profound ways.

However, it is important to understand that our belief in Christ and His historical existence isn’t merely a Christian claim or a sentimental reality but one of objective history. In fact, one of the main reasons we have in the creed the words “crucified under Pontius Pilate”, is precisely to make clear the historical reality of Christ and how we was put to death and rose again as a historical reality.

That said, let us examine His impact on the early world after His resurrection and ascension into heaven from the writings of non Christians.

The claim that “Jesus is not mentioned by a single Greek or Roman historian during the first century” is misleading. While surviving non-Christian references are relatively few, there are important early witnesses to Jesus and to the Christian movement that arose in His name.

1. Flavius Josephus — Jewish historian

The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, writing around AD 93–94, refers to James as “the brother of Jesus who was called Christ” in Antiquities of the Jews 20.200.

This passage is especially significant because Josephus was not a Christian. He had no reason to promote Christianity, yet he casually identifies James in relation to Jesus.

There is also the famous Testimonium Flavianum in Antiquities 18, which refers to Jesus, His teachings, His crucifixion under Pontius Pilate, and the continuation of His followers. Although the passage has clearly been modified by a later Christian copyist, most scholars believe it contains an authentic core originating with Josephus.

2. Tacitus — Roman historian

The Roman historian Tacitus, writing around AD 115, provides another important testimony.

In Annals 15.44, Tacitus explains that the Christians took their name from Christus, who suffered execution during the reign of Tiberius under the authority of Pontius Pilate.

Tacitus was certainly no friend of Christianity. In fact, he expresses considerable contempt for Christians. That makes his testimony particularly valuable: he was recording what he understood to be the historical origins of the Christian movement, not attempting to defend it.

3. Pliny the Younger — Roman governor

Around AD 112, Pliny the Younger, governor of Bithynia, wrote to Emperor Trajan asking how Christians should be treated.

Pliny describes Christians meeting on a fixed day and singing a hymn to Christ “as to a god.”

This is remarkable evidence for how quickly devotion to Jesus had spread throughout the Roman world.

Only a few generations after Jesus’ death, Roman authorities were already dealing with communities whose central devotion was directed toward Christ.

4. Suetonius — Roman historian

The Roman historian Suetonius, writing in the early second century, refers to disturbances among Jews in Rome associated with someone called “Chrestus.”

The precise interpretation is debated, and it should not be presented as an unequivocal reference to Jesus. Nevertheless, it demonstrates that the Christ movement had become sufficiently prominent in Rome to attract the attention of Roman historians and authorities.

5. The historical impact of Christianity

The evidence becomes even more striking when we consider what happened after Jesus’ crucifixion.

Jesus did not leave behind:

• an army,

• political office,

• wealth,

• a government,

• or a worldly empire.

Yet His followers proclaimed that the man crucified under Pontius Pilate had risen from the dead.

Beginning with a small group of disciples in first-century Judea, Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire.

Christians endured:

persecution → imprisonment → torture → martyrdom

Yet the movement continued to grow.

Within the Roman world, Christians established communities, cared for the poor and sick, rescued abandoned infants, assisted widows and orphans, and developed a distinctive culture centered upon the dignity of every human person created by God.

The point of the evidence

The historical argument for Jesus does not depend upon finding dozens of Roman historians writing biographies of Him.

Jesus was a Jewish teacher from a relatively obscure province of the Roman Empire. We should therefore expect the surviving contemporary pagan evidence to be limited.

But limited evidence is not the same thing as zero evidence.

By the end of the first century and beginning of the second, we have multiple non-Christian witnesses demonstrating that:

Jesus existed.
He was known as Christ.
He was executed under Pontius Pilate.
His followers continued after His death.
They worshipped Him.
And the movement bearing His name had spread throughout the Roman world.

And there is an even bigger historical question:

How did a crucified Jewish preacher, whose followers initially appeared powerless, become the center of a movement that would transform the Roman world and eventually reshape Western civilization?

The existence of Jesus is not a historical mystery requiring us to pretend the evidence doesn’t exist.

Jesus Christ was not a myth invented centuries later.

The Christian Scriptures provide our earliest and most extensive testimony, but they are not the only historical evidence.

Jewish and Roman writers provide independent non-Christian testimony to Jesus and the movement that arose from Him.

And the historical impact of Christianity is undeniable.

The Cross did not end the movement.

It began it.

JESUS CHRIST: HISTORICAL PERSON.
THE GOD=MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD !

It is clearly that from the onset of things, namely that from the writtings and monuments left behind for us by the early Christians, that the early Church was Catholic.

Ignatius of Antioch: The Early Church Was Already Catholic

Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–107), bishop of Antioch and a martyr under Emperor Trajan, wrote seven surviving letters on his journey to martyrdom in Rome. His writings are among the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament and provide a remarkably clear picture of the Church at the beginning of the second century.

1. “Where the bishop is, there is the Catholic Church”

Ignatius writes:

“Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people also be; even as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”

— Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8

This is strikingly early evidence for the term “Catholic Church” being used as an identifiable description of the universal Christian Church.

Ignatius does not describe Christianity as a loose collection of independent congregations interpreting Scripture individually. Instead, he repeatedly emphasizes:

• the bishop

• the clergy

• unity with the bishop

• the Eucharist

• apostolic authority

• unity of the faithful

• the universal Church.

2. Rome has a special “presidency”

In his opening to the Romans, Ignatius addresses the Roman Church as one that:

“holds the presidency”

and speaks of its “presidency of love.”

— Letter to the Romans, Introduction

This passage has been debated by scholars, particularly concerning precisely what Ignatius intended by “presidency.” It would therefore be too strong to claim that this single sentence proves the fully developed later doctrine of papal jurisdiction.

But it does establish something historically significant: Ignatius singles out the Church of Rome for a distinctive position among the churches.

And this is extraordinarily early—around the beginning of the second century.

3. Rome was a teaching Church

Ignatius tells the Romans:

“You have envied no one; but others you have taught. I desire only that what you have enjoined in your instruction may remain in force.”

— Letter to the Romans, 3

Again, the picture is not of Rome as merely another congregation with no wider significance.

Ignatius recognizes the Roman Christians as having taught other Christians, and he desires that their instruction remain authoritative.

4. Peter and Paul are associated with Rome

Ignatius also writes:

“Not as Peter and Paul did, do I command you. They were apostles, and I am a convict.”

— Letter to the Romans, 4

Ignatius is addressing the Roman Church and naturally invokes Peter and Paul in connection with it.

This fits the broader early Christian tradition that Rome was the Church associated particularly with the martyrdom and apostolic ministry of Peter and Paul.

The important apologetic point

The significance of Ignatius is not that every later Catholic doctrine can be read word-for-word into his letters.

The significance is that the basic Catholic structure is already visible extremely early:

Christ → Apostles → Bishops → Eucharistic Church → Catholic Church → Communion among the Churches → Rome’s distinctive position

So when someone argues that Catholic ecclesiology was invented centuries later, Ignatius presents a serious historical problem for that claim.

The early Church does not look like modern denominational Christianity.

It looks sacramental, hierarchical, episcopal, Eucharistic, apostolic—and explicitly Catholic.

And those “30-year-old books”…

If the objection is that Catholic apologetics books merely cite ancient Christian writings that were somehow unknown until recently, that objection misses the point.

Modern apologetic works are secondary sources. Their footnotes point readers back to the ancient primary sources.

Ignatius himself lived approximately AD 35–107. His letters are not modern Catholic inventions; they are ancient Christian documents that have been studied, preserved, translated, edited, and debated for centuries.

The question therefore isn’t:

“When was this Catholic apologetics book published?”

The better question is:

“What did Christians closest to the Apostles actually believe and practice?”

And when we open the writings of Ignatius, we encounter a Church with bishops, Eucharistic worship, apostolic succession, unity, the Catholic Church, and a distinctive Roman Church—all within living memory of the Apostles.

The Catholic claim isn't that Ignatius invented Catholicism.
The Catholic claim is that Ignatius is evidence that Catholic Christianity was already there.

Today, I want to give you a brief look at the life of Muhammad, the founder of the false religion know to you as Islam.

The primary historical sources for Muhammad’s life (c. 570–632 AD) are Islamic ones: the Sīra (biography) of Ibn Ishaq (as edited by Ibn Hisham), early historians such as al-Tabari and Ibn Sa’d, and collections of hadith (especially Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). These are the same texts Muslims regard as authoritative. Non-Muslim critics and some secular historians highlight certain episodes recorded in those sources as morally troubling by later or external standards. Muslims generally interpret the same events as justified responses to persecution, treaty-breaking, wartime necessity, or the norms of 7th-century Arabian tribal society.

Christ warned us that many false prophets shall arise (Matthew 24:11). He told us that we shall know them by their fruits (Matthew 7:16).

Muhammad, the founder of Islam, from an object stand point, live the life of an immoral savage to say the least:

1. Marriage to Aisha – He was a pedophile who married a six year old !

According to multiple reports in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (narrated by Aisha herself), Muhammad married her when she was six and consummated the marriage when she was nine. He was in his early fifties. The sources present this as unremarkable in context; classical Muslim scholars accepted the ages without controversy. Modern critics regard the consummation with a prepubescent child as pedophilia. Some contemporary Muslim apologists dispute the ages using secondary chronological arguments, but the earliest and most authoritative hadith collections state six and nine.

2. Treatment of the Jewish tribes of Medina

After the Hijra (622), Muhammad concluded agreements with the Jewish tribes of Medina (Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, Banu Qurayza).

• Banu Qaynuqa were expelled after a dispute (624).

• Banu Nadir were expelled after alleged plots (625).

• After the Battle of the Trench (627), Banu Qurayza were accused of negotiating with the besieging Meccan coalition and thus of treason. They were besieged and surrendered. Sa’d ibn Mu’adh (an ally of the tribe who had been wounded) judged that the adult males should be executed and the women and children enslaved. Muhammad approved the judgment as consistent with divine ruling. Traditional accounts (Ibn Ishaq, al-Tabari) put the number of men beheaded at 600–900 (some later sources lower it to ~400). The women and children were distributed as captives; Muhammad took one (Rayhana) for himself.

Critics describe this as a massacre of non-combatants after surrender. Traditional Muslim accounts frame it as punishment for betrayal during a existential siege of Medina.

3. Assassinations of critics and poets

Several individuals were killed on Muhammad’s order or with his approval for composing satirical or hostile poetry, or for agitating against him:

• Asma bint Marwan (a poetess nursing an infant) was killed in her sleep (c. 624).

• Abu Afak (an elderly poet) was assassinated.

• Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf (a Jewish poet and critic) was lured out and killed after composing verses against Muhammad and the Muslims. Other targeted killings of opponents (including some Jews of Khaybar) are recorded in the Sira.

These are presented in the sources as eliminating threats and silencing propaganda. Critics call them political assassinations of non-combatants for speech.

4. Military campaigns, raids, and treatment of captives

Muhammad led or authorized dozens of expeditions (ghazawat and sariya). Early ones included raids on Meccan caravans. After Badr (624), some prisoners were executed (e.g., al-Nadr ibn al-Harith and Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt). At Khaybar (628), the Jewish settlement was conquered; Kinana ibn al-Rabi was tortured (fire on his chest) to reveal hidden treasure and then killed; Muhammad took his widow Safiyya as a wife/concubine. Captives from various campaigns were enslaved, and the distribution of booty (including women) was standard.

Traditional accounts emphasize defensive or retaliatory motives after years of Meccan persecution. Critics note the shift from the earlier Meccan phase of non-violence to offensive warfare, the taking of sex slaves, and specific acts of torture or execution of prisoners.

5 A few other things to consider:

• Marriage to Zaynab bint Jahsh after she divorced Muhammad’s adopted son Zayd; a Quranic revelation (33:37) explicitly permits it and abolishes adoptive-son barriers.

Polygamy (traditional lists give 11–13 wives plus concubines) and reports of sexual privileges.

6. Commands or precedents regarding apostasy, treatment of polytheists, and later expansion.

These episodes are recorded in the earliest Muslim biographical and hadith literature. The sources themselves do not hide the events; the disagreement is over moral evaluation and historical context. And so in short, the events are not disputed. However his followers try to justify such savage behavior. The reality is he lived an immoral life by any real rational standards of morality !

It isn’t hard to grasp that such a person is not someone to immitate let alone to hold as a golden standard to follow !

I want to look at the question of sacred images and give you a deeper insight into why sacred art is of such profound importance and why it isn’t about the image itself.

ICONOCLASM: THE WAR AGAINST CHRIST

When Images Become a Battleground for the Incarnation

“In a picture even the unlearned may see what example they should follow; in a picture they who know no letters may yet read.”

- St. Gregory the Great; Ep. ix,105, in P. L., LXXVII, 1027.

More than a Debate About Art

Few controversies in Christian history have shaped theology as profoundly as Iconoclasm—the rejection and destruction of sacred images. At first glance, it appears to concern paintings and statues.

At first glance, iconoclasm appears to concern paintings, statues, and religious decoration. In reality, it reaches to the very heart of Christianity.

The question is not merely whether Christians may paint Christ.

The real question is: Did God truly become visible?

The Catholic answer is a resounding yes, because Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). If God truly entered history as a visible human being, then the material world can legitimately become a bearer of divine truth.

St. Paul points out that Christ “is the (visible) image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.” - Colossians 1:15

In short, this means for us that Our Lord Jesus Christ is not just a reflection; He holds all the traits and fullness of God inside Himself. When people look at the life, love, and actions of Jesus in the Gospels, they are looking at the exact expression of the invisible God

Thus, the controversy over icons is ultimately a controversy about the Incarnation itself. That is the heart of the matter.

What Is Iconoclasm?

The word comes from the Greek:

🔵 Eikon = image

🔵 Klao = to break

Literally: “Image-breaking.”

Historically, iconoclasm refers to movements that rejected or destroyed sacred images because they believed such images violated God’s commandment against idols.

Yet Catholic theology distinguishes carefully between:

🟢 Idolatry - Worshiping created things as gods.

🟢 Sacred Images - Honoring representations that direct the believer toward God.

The difference is enormous.

The Biblical Foundation

Critics often cite: “You shall not make for yourself a graven image...” (Exodus 20:4)

Yet Scripture itself immediately provides the proper interpretation.

God later commands Israel to make sacred images:

🟢 Cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25)

🟢 Bronze serpent (Numbers 21)

🟢 Temple decorations (1 Kings 6)

Therefore the prohibition cannot mean all images.

It condemns:

🔴 False worship

🔴 Pagan idolatry

🔴 Replacing God with creatures

The Bible distinguishes images from idols.

The Incarnation Changes Everything

The decisive event is not the Old Testament. It is Christ. Saint Paul calls Jesus:

“The image (eikon) of the invisible God.” (Colossians 1:15)

The invisible became visible. The eternal entered time. The Creator assumed matter.

Therefore matter itself can become an instrument of grace.

This explains: the sacraments, relics, churches, crucifixes, icons, statues.

Catholicism is profoundly incarnational.

Catholicism is unlike every religion that seeks escape from the material world. The Son of God did not merely appear to have a body; He truly assumed human flesh, sanctifying creation from within. Because Christ possessed a visible face, Christians may depict Him without denying His divinity. To refuse every image of Christ risks suggesting that His humanity was only an illusion—a mistake the early Church firmly rejected.

The Early Church

The earliest Christians decorated: Catacombs, Tombs, Churches - with images of: Christ, the Good Shepherd, Noah, Jonah, Mary, the Apostles.

These were never understood as idols. Rather, they proclaimed the Gospel visually.

The Iconoclastic Controversy

During the eighth century, the Byzantine Empire entered a severe crisis.

Emperors ordered: destruction of icons, persecution of monks, confiscation of religious art

Motivations included:

Political - Emperors wanted greater control over the Church.

Military - Some believed God punished the empire because of images.

Cultural - Influence from neighboring traditions that opposed religious imagery.

Theological - Fear that Christians confused honor with worship.

The Church fathers respond:

Many Fathers recognized that radical iconoclasm unintentionally echoed earlier heresies such as Docetism, which denied the reality of Christ's human body. If Christ was truly seen, touched, and known in the flesh (1 John 1:1), then depicting His humanity bears witness to the reality of the Incarnation.

St. John of Damascus

Among the greatest defenders of sacred images was John of Damascus.

His central argument remains foundational: “I do not worship matter. I worship the Creator of matter who became matter for my sake.”

This single insight transformed Christian theology.

Matter is not evil. Matter can communicate grace because Christ assumed human flesh.

St. Theodore the Studite goes even further by pointed out that refusing to depict Christ undermines the Gospel itself. Since Christ possesses a true human nature united to His divine Person, portraying His humanity affirms rather than denies the mystery of the Incarnation.

The early Councils : The Second Council of Nicaea (787)

The Seventh Ecumenical Council definitively taught:

🟢 Images of Christ are legitimate.

🟢 Images of Mary are legitimate.

🟢 Images of the saints are legitimate.

'We declare that we preserve intact all the written and unwritten traditions of the Church which have been entrusted to us. One of these traditions consists in the production of representational artwork, which accords with the history of the preaching of the Gospel. For it confirms that the incarnation of the Word of God was real and not imaginary, and to our benefit as well, for realities that illustrate each other undoubtedly reflect each other's meaning.' - Council of Nicea (787 A.D.)

It carefully distinguished:

Latria: Only God receives worship.

Dulia: Saints receive honor.

Hyperdulia: Mary receives unique honor because of her role in salvation history.

Thus Catholics never worship statues.

Honor passes to the person represented.

As the Council explained: “The honor shown to the image passes to its prototype.”

And so in short. The Catholic Church teaches that :

🔵 Sacred images lead us toward Christ.

🔵 Christian veneration differs essentially from idolatry.

🔵 Visible beauty serves invisible truth.

As St. Basil said so well; "Whoever venerates an image venerates the person portrayed in it" - St. Basil, De Spiritu Sancto 18,45.

Why Images of the Saints?

The saints are not alternatives to Christ.

They are reflections of Christ.

Just as a family treasures photographs of loved ones, the Church preserves images of those who most perfectly reflected the life of Christ.

Sacred images remind believers that holiness is possible and that “we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1).

Why Human Beings Need Images

Psychology helps explain why sacred art is powerful.

"The beauty of the images moves me to contemplation, as a meadow delights the eyes and subtly infuses the soul with the glory of God" - St. John Damascene, De imag 1,27.

Humans are embodied. We remember through: vision, symbols, stories, beauty

Images: educate memory, inspire virtue, awaken emotion, focus attention.

Even modern education relies heavily upon visual learning.

Neuroscience

Brain research confirms: Visual information is processed extraordinarily quickly.

Images: strengthen memory, evoke empathy, sustain attention, shape imagination.

Christian art therefore participates in formation. It teaches even before words are spoken.

Philosophy

Catholic philosophy rejects both extremes.

Materialism, - Matter is everything.

Gnosticism - Matter is evil.

Both are false.

Catholicism teaches:

Matter is created good. Sin wounds creation. Grace heals and elevates creation. Icons witness to redeemed matter.

"The composition of the image is not the invention of the painters, but the result of the legislation and approved tradition of the Church" - Synod Nicaea II, Actio VI, 331, 832.

Sociology

Every civilization tells stories through images.

Flags. Monuments. Photographs. Memorials. Family albums. National heroes.

People naturally preserve visible reminders of what they love.

Sacred images function similarly within Christian culture.

Economics

Throughout history sacred art has:

preserved craftsmanship, encouraged architecture, inspired music, supported education, promoted pilgrimage, enriched local economies.

Beauty often becomes an engine of cultural flourishing.

Political Dimensions

The enemies of our faith know the real meaning and value of sacred images, hence their desire to destroy them !

Throughout history, those seeking to reshape society have often begun by destroying its symbols. Ancient iconoclasts shattered holy images; modern revolutions have frequently toppled monuments, erased historical memory, and rewritten cultural identity. The battle over images is often a battle over the soul of a civilization.

Iconoclasm has frequently accompanied revolutions. Destroying images often seeks to erase: history, identity, religion, collective memory.

Ancient emperors destroyed icons. Modern revolutions destroy monuments.

The underlying struggle is often about who defines reality.

Technology

Today’s iconoclasm is often quieter than smashing statues.

It appears in ridicule, censorship, digital manipulation, pornography, consumerism, and the endless flood of images that distract rather than elevate the soul.

Every culture is shaped by what it contemplates. The question is no longer whether we have icons.

Not the smashing of statues— but: Ridicule of religion, censorship, algorithmic invisibility, replacement of beauty with spectacle.

Digital culture forms imagination just as medieval icons once did.

The question remains:

What images are shaping our souls?

A New Iconoclasm

Modern society sometimes rejects not only religious images but also the very idea that human beings bear the image of God.

The greatest icon is not painted.

It is the human person.

Genesis declares: Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God. (Genesis 1:26–27)

Whenever human dignity is denied—through exploitation, violence, abortion, racism, trafficking, or dehumanization—the image of God is obscured.

This is a deeper iconoclasm.

The wisdom of our forefathers was clear. They understood the reality that sacred art, lift minds to God, teach the faith, express authentic beauty, serve the liturgy.

Beauty is therefore evangelical. It attracts before it argues.

The Church has always undertood well that beauty is a path to God.

When truth and goodness appear beautiful, the human heart becomes open to grace.

Sacred images participate in this evangelization.

CONCLUSION:

Christ, the Perfect Image of the Father

The history of iconoclasm is not ultimately about paintings, mosaics, or statues. It is about the mystery that stands at the center of Christianity:

The eternal Son of God truly became visible in Jesus Christ.

Because of the Incarnation, creation is not discarded but redeemed; matter is not despised but elevated to serve God’s saving plan.

Sacred images therefore proclaim, in color and form, the same Gospel preached in words.

The Church rejects both idolatry and the destruction of holy images. Instead, she proposes a sacramental vision in which beauty, truth, and goodness converge in Christ. Every authentic icon points beyond itself to the One who is “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15).

When Christians venerate sacred images rightly, they are not stopping at wood, paint, or stone—they are lifting their hearts to the living Lord.

In an age filled with distorted images and competing visions of humanity, Catholics are called to become living icons of Christ !

As Christians contemplate the face of Christ, they themselves are transformed:

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)

The goal of every sacred image is not admiration of paint or stone, but conformity to Christ Himself. Icons point beyond themselves to the living Lord, until His image is restored in every believer through grace.

More and more it is become clear that we have to know our Catholic history. History is often rewritten by the enemies of our faith to fit their anti-Catholic narrative.

When we look at the Catholic efforts against the Muslims who have worked their expansion across the Middle East and reached into Europe and Spain, we need grasp the various ways Catholics responded.

Here we will briefly consider the response in Spain.

What was the Reconquista?

The Reconquista (”Reconquest”) refers to the centuries-long effort (roughly 711–1492) by the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula to recover territories conquered after the Muslim invasion of Visigothic Spain in 711.

Catholics of the period generally understood this not as a new war of conquest but as the recovery of a Christian kingdom that had been invaded.

The theological principles behind it

The Church did not teach that Christians should conquer lands simply because they were non-Christian. Rather, support for the Reconquista rested on several existing principles.

1. The Just War doctrine

Following St. Augustine of Hippo and later St. Thomas Aquinas, a war could be morally legitimate if it met conditions such as:

• It was declared by lawful authority;

• It had a just cause;

• It was fought with right intention;

• Force used was proportionate.

The Christian kingdoms argued they were defending their people and recovering lands unjustly seized.

2. Defense of Christendom

The medieval Church viewed Christian civilization as something rulers had a duty to defend.

If Christian populations were attacked or occupied, rulers could legitimately wage defensive war to protect:

• Churches,

• Monasteries,

• Pilgrims,

• Clergy,

• Christian subjects.

This differs from saying people may be converted by force.

3. Recovery rather than aggression

The medieval understanding was that Spain had been a Christian kingdom for centuries before the Muslim conquest.

Thus many churchmen regarded the Reconquista as restoring legitimate Christian rule rather than initiating an unprovoked conquest.

Was it considered a Crusade?

Eventually, yes.

Several popes granted crusading privileges to campaigns in Spain similar to those given to crusaders in the Holy Land.

These included:

• Indulgences (spiritual blessings),

• Spiritual privileges,

• Encouragement for Christians to assist militarily.

This reflected the belief that defending Christian lands against invasion could fall within the broader idea of a crusade.

Were Muslims forced to convert?

In short no ! That said, we need to give some greater clarity here.

During much of Muslim rule in Spain, Christians and Jews were permitted to practice their religions, though with legal disabilities.

Likewise, after many Christian reconquests, Muslim communities often retained property, mosques, and legal protections under negotiated treaties.

However, after the fall of Alhambra in 1492, policies hardened considerably due to the fact that it became evident that both Muslims and Jews where working to undermine the Christian social fabric of society. This led at time to expulsion from the lands.

The Catholic teaching has always been clear on the question of conversion. There can never be any compulsion in matters regarding a persons conversion to the faith.

Does the Church teach forced conversion?

No.

Faith requires a free act of the will.

St. Thomas Aquinas argued that unbelievers who had never accepted Christianity should not be forced into baptism, because genuine faith cannot result from coercion.

The Church has consistently taught that baptism administered against a person’s will is contrary to the nature of faith.

Modern Catholic teaching

The Church today continues to uphold:

• The right of legitimate self-defense;

• The principles of just war (though recent popes have emphasized peace and made the application of just war criteria increasingly restrictive);

• The dignity of every human person;

• The rejection of coercion in matters of faith.

Common misunderstandings

Some claim the Reconquista proves the Church teaches religious conquest. That is inaccurate.

The Church’s support was grounded in principles such as:

• Defense against invasion,

• Restoration of legitimate authority,

• Protection of Christian communities,

• Just war.

These principles are distinct from a universal doctrine requiring Christians to conquer non-Christian lands or compel conversions.

The Church believes, as her entire missionary efforts have shown, the conversion of non Catholic lands by means of preaching of the gospel !

In summary, there is no official Catholic “Reconquista doctrine.” Rather, the Reconquista was understood by many medieval Catholics as a legitimate effort—under the principles of just war and defense of Christendom—to recover Christian territories lost through conquest. The Church supported many of these campaigns, especially when they were framed as defensive or restorative, but this support arose from broader moral teachings on war and political authority rather than from a unique doctrinal teaching called the “Reconquista doctrine.”

Whenever we cite a reference from the Old Testament texts, like the book of Machabees, Protestants will respond by saying such texts don’t belong to the canon of scripture. However what they fail to grasp is that not only is that false, but what is more is that those texts are still of great theological (and historical) importance regardless of their erroneous position on the canon of the Old Testament.

That said, I want to respond in this article to the false claim that “When Jesus went to read in the synagogue, the available canon matched the modern 39-book Protestant Old Testament, not the Catholic 46-book canon.”

The fact of the matter is that the claim that Jesus read from a synagogue containing the same Old Testament canon as the modern Protestant Bible cannot be demonstrated from either Scripture or history. In reality, neither the New Testament nor the historical evidence supports such a conclusion.

1. The Gospel Never Identifies the Synagogue’s Canon

In Luke 4:16–21, Jesus is handed the scroll of Isaiah and reads from it during the synagogue service.

The passage says nothing whatsoever about the complete contents of the synagogue’s collection of sacred books. Luke merely records that the scroll of Isaiah was present. To conclude from this that the synagogue possessed exactly the same canon as the modern Protestant Old Testament is an argument from silence.

The text simply does not address the question.

2. There Was No “39-Book Canon” in the First Century

The expression “39-book Old Testament” is historically anachronistic.

The number thirty-nine is the result of the Protestant method of dividing the books of Scripture. First-century Jews did not count their Scriptures as thirty-nine books. Instead, they generally counted twenty-two or twenty-four books by combining books that Protestants separate:

Samuel (1–2 Samuel)

Kings (1–2 Kings)

Chronicles (1–2 Chronicles)

Ezra–Nehemiah

The Twelve Minor Prophets

Thus, it is impossible to claim that Jesus read from a “39-book canon,” because no such canon existed as a numerical concept during His earthly ministry.

3. Judaism Did Not Possess a Universally Fixed Canon

Second Temple Judaism was not monolithic.

Different Jewish communities preserved and valued somewhat different collections of sacred writings.

The Dead Sea Scrolls contain copies of:

Tobit

Sirach

the Letter of Jeremiah (Baruch 6)

alongside Isaiah, Genesis, Psalms, and the other universally accepted Scriptures.

While the Dead Sea Scrolls do not by themselves prove that every community regarded these books as fully canonical, they do demonstrate that the boundaries of the canon were not universally fixed and that these writings circulated among Jewish religious communities as revered sacred literature.

There is no historical evidence that every synagogue throughout Palestine possessed an identical, universally recognized canon.

4. The Septuagint Was the Bible of Much of the Jewish World

Several centuries before Christ, the Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek in what became known as the Septuagint (LXX).

By the first century this had become the Scriptures used by millions of Greek-speaking Jews throughout the Mediterranean world and by many early Christians.

Importantly, the Septuagint included the books now called the Deuterocanonical books.

The New Testament writers frequently quote the Old Testament using wording that agrees with the Septuagint rather than the later Masoretic Hebrew tradition, demonstrating the authority and widespread acceptance of the Greek Scriptures in the apostolic age.

5. Jesus Never Rejected the Deuterocanonical Books

During His public ministry, Jesus repeatedly corrected false interpretations of Scripture, condemned corrupt traditions, rebuked the Pharisees, and exposed religious error.

Yet He never once declared Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, or 1–2 Maccabees to be false Scripture.

If these books had been illegitimate additions corrupting God’s Word, this silence would be remarkable.

The argument from silence therefore cuts both ways.

One cannot claim Christ endorsed the Protestant canon merely because He quoted Isaiah while simultaneously arguing that His silence proves the exclusion of the Deuterocanonical books.

6. The New Testament Never Gives an Inspired Table of Contents

Neither Christ nor the Apostles ever provide a divinely inspired list of Old Testament books.

Nowhere does Scripture enumerate the contents of either the Old Testament or the New Testament.

The canon of Scripture was recognized and authoritatively defined by the Church over time, culminating in formal conciliar decisions such as those of Hippo (393), Carthage (397 and 419), and later reaffirmed dogmatically by the ecumenical Councils of Florence (1442) and Trent (1546).

Therefore, appealing to Jesus reading Isaiah cannot establish the boundaries of the Old Testament canon.

7. The Earliest Christians Accepted the Broader Canon

The earliest generations of Christians overwhelmingly used the Septuagint.

Many of the Fathers quote the Deuterocanonical books as Scripture or with scriptural authority.

The regional Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397 and 419) listed the same Old Testament canon recognized by the Catholic Church today. This canon was reaffirmed by Pope Innocent I (405), accepted throughout much of Christendom for over a millennium, and dogmatically reaffirmed at Florence (1442) and Trent (1546).

The burden of proof therefore rests upon anyone claiming that Christ or the Apostles taught a narrower canon than the one received by the historic Church.

Conclusion

The assertion that “Jesus read from the same 39-book Old Testament used by Protestants today” cannot be demonstrated from Scripture or history.

Luke simply records that Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah.

The concept of a “39-book canon” did not exist in the first century.

Second Temple Judaism did not possess a universally fixed canon.

The Septuagint—containing the Deuterocanonical books—was already in widespread use throughout the Jewish world.

Jesus never identified or endorsed a Protestant-style Old Testament canon.

The New Testament never supplies an inspired table of contents.

The historic Church, not Scripture alone, authoritatively recognized the canon received by Christians.

At most, Luke tells us that the synagogue possessed the scroll of Isaiah. He does not tell us which other books were present, nor does he identify the precise boundaries of the Old Testament canon. Consequently, the claim that Jesus used the modern Protestant Old Testament is an assertion without biblical or historical support.

One of the clear foundational errors of Protestantism regarding the righteous (saints) who have departed this life, is to automatically presume that those who have died are somehow unable to hear us or know our happenings on earth. Yet, both scripture and the entire body of Christian theology prior to the reformation (and our own personal experience as Catholics) tell us the very contrary.

Let us look at a few biblical examples even beyond that which I had previously used in my early post on the matter.

The saints in heaven pray for those on earth. . .

The bible is clear: the righteous departed are alive, aware and intercede for God’s people.

“I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” - Matthew 22:32

2 Maccabees 15:11–16 is one of the clearest biblical passages supporting the idea that the righteous departed are alive, aware of events on earth, and intercede for God’s people.

2 Maccabees 15:11–16 records a vision given to Judas Maccabeus before battle. He sees Onias, the deceased high priest, and Jeremiah, the deceased prophet. Onias is described as “praying with outstretched hands for the whole body of the Jews” (v. 12), while Jeremiah is identified as “he who loves the brethren and prays much for the people and the holy city” (v. 14). Jeremiah then gives Judas a golden sword as a sign of God’s assistance. This passage explicitly portrays holy men who have died continuing to love, pray for, and assist God’s people on earth.

This reality fits perfectly alongside the New Testament evidence:

2 Maccabees 15:12–16 – Onias and Jeremiah, though dead, pray for Israel on earth.

Revelation 5:8 – The twenty-four elders present the prayers of the saints before God.

Revelation 8:3–4 – An angel offers the prayers of all the saints upon the heavenly altar before God.

Hebrews 12:1 – Christians are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses.”

Luke 15:7, 10 – Heaven rejoices over the repentance of sinners, showing awareness of events on earth.

Luke 16:19–31 – The rich man and Abraham remain conscious after death and are aware of earthly affairs.

Matthew 17:1–3 – Moses and Elijah appear with Christ, demonstrating that the righteous remain alive after bodily death.

Going even further : The transfiguration:

At the Transfiguration:

Moses had died about 1,400 years earlier (Deuteronomy 34).

Elijah had been taken into heaven centuries before (2 Kings 2).

Yet both appear alive, conscious, and speaking with Christ (Luke tells us they spoke of His coming Passion in Jerusalem; Luke 9:30–31).

Peter, James, and John witness the event. Although astonished, they never express horror or accuse Christ of consulting the dead. Instead, Peter wishes to remain in their presence and build three tabernacles (Matthew 17:4).

That last point is particularly significant. If first-century Jews believed it was inherently unlawful for the righteous departed to appear or converse by God’s will, we would expect at least some protest. Instead, the Gospel presents the event as a revelation of Christ’s glory.

The point here is that - The Transfiguration shows that death does no server communion between God people.

The Transfiguration shows that death does not sever the communion between God’s faithful servants. Moses and Elijah are not memories or unconscious souls—they are living persons who know Christ’s mission, converse with Him, and participate in one of the greatest moments of salvation history.

When you place this beside 2 Maccabees 15, the picture becomes even more clearer:

2 Maccabees shows the departed righteous praying for God’s people.

The Transfiguration shows the departed righteous alive, aware, and conversing with Christ about His redemptive work.

Revelation shows heaven presenting the prayers of the saints before God.

Together they form a consistent biblical theology of the Communion of Saints rather than isolated proof texts.

What is more is that in Hebrews 12:22–24. After describing the “great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), the author (St. Paul) says Christians have come to “Mount Sion... the heavenly Jerusalem... innumerable angels... the spirits of just men made perfect... and Jesus.” The Church on earth is portrayed as worshiping in communion with the saints in heaven. This bridges the gap between the Transfiguration and Revelation by showing that Christ’s Church encompasses both the faithful on earth and the perfected righteous in heaven.

Taken together, these passages present a consistent biblical picture: those who die in God’s friendship are not cut off from the Church. They remain alive in His presence (cf. Matthew 22:32), love God’s people, and participate in His work by presenting prayers before His throne. This is the biblical foundation for the Catholic doctrine of the Communion of Saints and the intercession of the saints.

Dear Friends,

When ever a Catholic will demonstrate clearly from scripture examples of one person interceding for another before God in the Old Testament or before Christ in the New Testament, Protestants will bring up the objection saying, but such persons were not dead or they were people who where on earth, as if somehow such persons no longer have power that they are now with God in heaven.

However to give this objection a more detailed response, let us look at scripture itself and gain some clear insight.

Apocalypse 5:8

One biblical foundation for the intercession of the saints is Apocalypse/Revelation 5:8:

“And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.”

This passage reveals that the saints in heaven are not passive observers. The twenty-four elders present the prayers of God’s people before the throne of the Lamb. The image is one of active participation in the heavenly liturgy, where the saints are involved in presenting the prayers of the faithful to God.

This teaching is reinforced in Revelation 8:3–4:

“And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.”

Here, an angel likewise presents the prayers of God’s people before His throne. Revelation therefore portrays a consistent heavenly reality: both the glorified elders and the angels actively participate in presenting the prayers of the faithful to God. Far from depicting heaven as detached from the Church on earth, these passages reveal the inhabitants of heaven sharing in God’s work on behalf of His people.

If the saints in heaven can present our prayers before God, then it follows that they are aware of those prayers and participate in God’s plan of answering them. This provides biblical support for the Catholic practice of asking the saints to pray for us. Catholics do not worship the saints or ask them to answer prayers by their own power; rather, we ask them to intercede with God on our behalf, just as Christians on earth ask one another for prayers (cf. James 5:16).

The imagery in Revelation also recalls the ministry of the Archangel Raphael in the Book of Tobit. Raphael identifies himself by saying:

“I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and enter before the glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:15).

He then explains his role:

“When you and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer before the glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:12).

The prayers Raphael presents are clearly petitions (see Tobit 3:1–6, 11–15), demonstrating that heavenly beings can carry the prayers of God’s people before God. Revelation portrays the same heavenly ministry, showing that not only angels but also the glorified elders present the prayers of the faithful before the throne of the Lamb.

Taken together, Tobit 12, Revelation 5, and Revelation 8 reveal a consistent biblical pattern: God permits members of His heavenly court—both angels and glorified saints—to participate in His providence by presenting the prayers of His people before His throne. Since Scripture depicts the inhabitants of heaven as actively involved in offering our prayers to God, it is entirely reasonable to ask for their intercession. Their prayers do not compete with Christ’s unique mediation but participate in it, just as the intercessory prayers of Christians on earth do. As St. Paul urges believers to pray for one another (1 Timothy 2:1; Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 4:3), so too the saints in heaven continue to exercise that ministry in perfect union with Christ, “who always lives to make intercession” for His people (Hebrews 7:25). Christ remains the one Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), while all Christian intercession—whether on earth or in heaven—derives its efficacy entirely from His one perfect mediation.

Today I look at the reality of why Protestant foundation ideas have no biblical basis. In fact Protestantism at the core of it goes directly against solid biblical principles.

The New Testament and the Question of Denominations

The Bible never gives individual Christians the authority to establish separate churches that teach doctrines contrary to those handed down by Jesus Christ and His Apostles. On the contrary, the New Testament repeatedly condemns division within the Church, warns against altering apostolic doctrine, and commands believers to preserve the unity of the faith.

The Command for Doctrinal Unity

Scripture consistently presents Christ’s Church as one visible body united in faith.

Ephesians 4:4–5 declares:

“There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Likewise, 1 Corinthians 1:10 records Paul’s appeal:

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another... that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Jesus Himself prayed for this unity shortly before His Passion:

John 17:20–21

“That they may all be one... so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

The New Testament therefore presents unity not as an optional ideal, but as a defining characteristic of Christ’s Church.

Warnings Against Altering Apostolic Doctrine

The Apostles also issued some of Scripture’s strongest warnings against changing the faith they had received.

Galatians 1:8

“Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.”

2 John 9

“Anyone who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God.”

Jude 3

Believers are instructed to:

“Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

The expression “once for all” emphasizes that the apostolic deposit of faith was delivered definitively rather than being subject to later revision or replacement.

Paul also foretold a time when many would abandon sound doctrine:

2 Timothy 4:3–4

“The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching... but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”

How Different Christian Traditions Explain Their Existence

Since the New Testament strongly emphasizes unity and fidelity to apostolic teaching, different Christian traditions offer differing explanations for the existence of multiple churches.

1. Apostolic Succession

The Catholic Church maintains that Christ founded one visible Church governed by the Apostles and their successors. It points out to us that apostolic authority has continued through the bishops, preserving the same deposit of faith throughout history. From this perspective, later ecclesial bodies that separated from this historic Church lack biblical authorization for their separation.

2. Restoration (Most Protestant Traditions)

Many Protestant communities argue that significant corruption entered the life and teaching of the historic Church over time. They therefore understand the Reformation not as the creation of a new Church but as an effort to restore the original apostolic faith using Scripture as the supreme authority.

3. Unity in Essentials

Many modern evangelical denominations maintain that Christians can remain united despite disagreements over doctrines they consider secondary. According to this view, denominations are different expressions of the same universal Church, provided they agree on what are regarded as the essential doctrines of Christianity.

A Traditional Catholic Evaluation

From a traditional Catholic perspective, the New Testament nowhere grants believers authority to establish separate ecclesial bodies based on differing interpretations of doctrine. The apostles consistently condemn schism, command unity in faith, and insist that the apostolic teaching is to be preserved intact.

Consequently, if Christ established one Church and entrusted one deposit of faith to the Apostles, then competing churches teaching contradictory doctrines cannot all represent the fullness of that apostolic faith. The existence of conflicting denominations is therefore understood not as something authorized by Scripture, but as the result of divisions that arose after the apostolic age.

Whether one accepts that conclusion depends upon one’s understanding of the Church, apostolic authority, and the interpretation of Scripture. Catholics argue that Scripture, read together with the witness of the early Church, points to the preservation of one visible Church rather than the legitimacy of multiple independent churches teaching conflicting doctrines.
