This Thursday (9/3) some very cool, very free programming is happening at the Brooklyn Public Library: a reggae set by our pal Max Glazer, followed by a screening of Machel Montano’s Like Ah Boss: Journey Of A Soca King, projected on the library façade and introduced by Machel himself.

I’m not involved with this event, just sharing because it’s dope.

This is a pro-library publication!

I spent a weekend in Trinidad interviewing Machel for the cover of The FADER two decades ago, after discovering his hyperspeed U2 cover that made me want to backflip down a football field in the rain (spoiler alert: still does). We talked about the X-Men and Criss Angel and Michael Jackson’s jetpack while I learned about the genders of local beers.

Obviously, it was a delight.

There’s a new Billy Preston documentary that promises to shed new light on the journey(s) of this one-of-one keyboard prodigy and “fifth Beatle,” a ubiquitous collaborator / talented solo act whose life was very much life-ing.

I’m sure it will be an emotional watch — “Can a movie lift your heart and break it at practically the same time?” — stuffed with side quests.

Besides the Beatles, Preston played with the Stones, Sam Cooke, Little Richard and Luther Vandross. He lent his inimitable keys to the Streisand album that Steely Dan wrote a song for, a Fastball track (lol) and the Chili Peppers, twice: their Pretty Woman OST contribution (sadly, not Juliacore) and a Stadium Arcadium deep cut twenty years later.

Even this Coke Boys classique would not exist without the first few bars of a Billy original that Joe Cocker would later make iconic.

Leaving out a ton.

But I came here to focus on the time he absolutely smoked West German public television, a moment that you should now drop everything to enjoy for the next five minutes and forty seconds.

I mean!!!

There’s more songs in the set, including a cover of “My Sweet Lord” (which George Harrison originally wrote for Billy while he was signed to Apple), but “Summertime” is thee one. Not just for its place in the Gershwin to Lana pipeline, or the melancholy funkiness of BP’s arrangement; this clip encapsulates performance itself, raw and utterly magnetic.

“Now, this is the way I would imagine Bach would play it…” COME ONNN.

Janky blue screen only makes it go harder. No surprise that the viscerally human imperfections of old lenses and analog TV cameras are en vogue once again during these technofascist times (ugh). But I take solace in the fact that, as a species, we are naturally predisposed to watch one another get busy.

I wouldn’t say that “living is easy.”

But I prefer it to the alternative.

Tubi is truly the people’s streamer.

I make this statement solely off content offerings, though the brand’s Super Bowl pranks and pride merch also go hard (do not look into the ownership).

It’s the only site where you can watch legit classics and cult obscurities next to borderline public access schlock for the monthly sum of zero dollars, all thanks to intermittent ads for dietary supplements and “off brand boner pills.”

This used to be opp fodder. “Tubi CEO Combs Through Goodwill Used DVDs Looking For Movies To Upload,” hardeee har har.

But they merely adopted the used DVD bin.

I was born in it, molded by it…

And now, I am OD excited to binge The Monkees’ complete TV series for the first time since it aired on Nick At Nite. That was in honor of the band’s 20th anniversary; we’re now celebrating their 60th (!!!) with lone survivor (and Billy Corgan podcast guest) Micky Dolenz still on road, while his eternally youthful avatar holds it down in the streaming equivalent of a rerun block.

I’ll let other folks sell you on what makes the band / show so goofily compelling. Fan-turned-manager Andrew Sandoval recently compiled a complete history of the “manufactured Beatles,” tho even as a kid I found that take reductive.

If industry plants were real, we’d all be gardeners!

Svengali’d or not, their tunes and televised hijinx forged a genuine connection over multiple generations. Personally, I love this group as a one-of-a-kind pop culture constellation whose stars somehow unite Jack Nicholson LSD trips, Run-DMC samples, My Two Dads (also streaming free), Gorillaz (duh) and the Liquid Paper fortune.

Also have to shout out a spot-on 1990 grunge parody featuring Bob Odenkirk as Stone Gossard / Mike Nesmith, which begs the question: will we ever be able to add The Ben Stiller Show to that endless queue of dreams?

Fabolous, “Lorena Freestyle” — imagine loving anything as much as Fab loves matching his clothes and going to the Dominican Day Parade.

Ken Russell’s The Devils trailer — dug this stroboscopic cut-up (and cannot wait for 1971 Oliver Reed perving out in 4K). Ben Affleck’s Animals teaser also went with “stress” as primary editing aesthetic, while Liv Morgan’s Takashi Miike Cinematic Universe debut Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo pulses close behind. Are we in a world (slaps knee) where trailers r fun again?

There is a certain strain of AGGGGHHHHHHH that re-enters the chat whenever August inches towards its midway mark, like Sunday scaries on PEDs.

Not to be confused with “Mercury Retrograde has a gun” — and this most recent one was strapped, with another coming up in October — but I digress.

Despite where it lands on the schedule, don’t think I’m dealing with backpack commercial seasonal affective disorder (I like school) or any form of RTO anxiety (ur boy clearly does not have a real office job lol). If this feeling is regret, blame it on a generational pursuit of efficiency, because I think it all stems from not finding a way to maximize… leisure?

Am I upset with myself for not chilling enough this Summer?!?

Just spent several bucolic days upstate with friends watching sunsets, jumping into pools and consuming various breads. I’ve had other things to focus on, but c’mon, these activities should not be relegated to a single weekend.

Learn from my mistakes.

My album UFO turns seven next week.

Not a traditionally important year of observance (married ppl get wool, gross) but hey, give it up for rando milestones! Elvis Costello is currently celebrating a 49th anniversary (“I thought the whole idea of celebrating a 50th was preposterous”), and My Aim Is True is stuffed with all-timers.

I merely made some bleep bloops in 2019.

But as my dog Steve Miller says (not Stephen, double gross), time keeps on slipping slipping slipping into the future (doot doot doo doo) so if you find yourself with anything worth commemorating, grab a candle and blaze it.

Along with the aforementioned bleeps, UFO showcases vocals from Nasty Nigel, Mattie Safer, Mr Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Fire Alarm and FATHERDUDE at their waviest. There’s also remixes by Shash’U (still the funkiest thing anyone has ever done to one of my songs), Masayoshi Iimori of Trekkie Trax, Tony Quattro and more.

I don’t know if I would classify the release as a “win” by most commercial metrics (streamed double wood, tho we moved all 300 vinyl copies) or critical ones (6.6 on da Fork, crickets everywhere else).

As the artist, I’m OK with that.

As the designer, it remains one of my favorite projects to date.

I am my own dream client!

I’ve always loved collage art in all its forms; UFO was a cut-and-paste process sonically, even more so visually.

Each single and remix featured its own cover that I would create layer by layer out of crusty newspaper scans, vintage sci-fi / girly mags, recycled textbooks, janky fonts, old comics, electrical diagrams, Zipatone, clip art esoterica…

A glue stick universe of unfiltered Nickness.

I animated each drop as well, culminating in a full club flyer music video for “Ecstasy Hot Line” with Nigel. We threw a release party in NYC, another one in Los Angeles, then got pandemic’d lol.

Pahty dun!

I’ve kept making music in the years since, but haven’t felt the itch to drop anything new in album format (yet). But a half decade and change later, I still appreciate that every single element of UFO was made by a crazy person with love, an obsession to detail, and a bespoke, original creative language.

In a world of shark biters and data center slopadelica, that ain’t nothing.

Before internet search becomes completely useless, I wanted to collect all these in one place on their birthday and share ‘em. You can also hire me to flex this skillset (amongst others) for your own projects, btw.

Twisted Teens, “Florida Water Blues” (Dir. Jack Massucci) — darkly mischievous music video from one of my fav recent releases (and TT’s second this year). Lo-fi punk / country / Strokes-circa-This Is It vibes, with a whisky bottle wistfulness that gets its hooks into you.

Neel Ghosh standup — “musical comedy” is a place where things go to suck. But in the rare cases when it doesn’t (i.e., Neel’s absurdist hee-hees) I’m all in.

The early 1990s were an age of innovation where the Venn diagram of “ridiculous” and “sublime” was simply… a circle.

In the space of a few years, our greatest minds blessed us with Crystal Pepsi, Girbaud Jeans and perhaps my personal favorite:

Comic book swimsuit covers.

Technically, Jim Lee’s mutant pool party was a bonus spread in X-Men #1 (still the Guinness World Record holder for best selling single issue of all time) rather than an actual cover. It was predated by the peak long butt Marvel Swimsuit Special a few months earlier (“TAKE A WAKANDA WILD SIDE!”) and countless others since, but c’mon, this the one.

It doesn’t just capture the soapy essence of the X-Men, but the inherent goofiness (complimentary) of comic books and superhero logic as a whole.

Wolverine is wearing cut-off jorts!

Kare Andrews’ new “swimsuit variant” Justice League Unlimited is cooking with that OG recipe, from Aquaman’s glizzy trident to Power Girl’s… flotation devices.

I have always found the hubba hubba awooga element of these covers far more silly than sexual — no shade to the manga pervert community — and appreciate how objectification extends to the fellas, in a very Baywatch sort of way.

Which brings us to Bruce in the deep end (slow clap).

Not Master Wayne’s first beach day, but just as dumb / perfect.

Is this the cure for superhero fatigue?

I rewatched the 1989 Batman on 70mm (!!!) at Lincoln Center a few weeks ago and was reminded of just how playful it was. And this is a film about product safety tampering (shout out the programmer for noting that Smylex was a CIA invention) and violent facial disfigurement!

After seeing all the “serious” trailers that have dropped around Comic-Con…

But if you are a music business professional, plz give me a minute of your time.

You likely know that a Performance Rights Organization (PRO) “collects public performance royalties for songwriters, composers, and music publishers by licensing music use, tracking public plays, and distributing money.”

I’m signed up with ASCAP, who are great (and alerted me to several un-cashed checks hiding inside old statements at a time when I could really use ‘em).

Their president is Paul Williams, one of the few humans to have successfully collaborated with Brian DePalma, Daft Punk and Kermit, so I’d expect no less.

It costs nothing to register with ASCAP. Same goes for other PROs; I’m sure they’re all solid, but mine is the only one that Jadakiss rhymed with “get your ass capped.” And every few months, they deliver some human monies into my bank account that previously were not there.

Emphasis: some human monies.

Present streaming math is roughly 1M plays = $5K.

That pie is divided further as labels / distro / etc get involved, which is its own can of worms deal. But if you are self-published / signed up with a PRO, there’s additional money that the organization will collect on your behalf and pay out to you directly, which is what I’m discussing.

Since 2021, there’s additional additional money courtesy of the Music Modernization Act and its distribution arm, the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC). The MLC “updates the copyright law to make statutory licensing more fair for creators and more efficient for digital music providers.”

Whatever you say, Ghost Of Orrin Hatch!

I’m not sure where the efficiency part comes in, since I’m now spending the day re-registering all my songs through the MLC portal, something I wouldn’t have even known to do without a heads up from ASCAP.

But if I didn’t, any cents owed to me would simply get passed on / distributed to other artists via “market share.” Almost as if the system is intentionally arcane and onerous to discourage people from taking part…

It’s annoying and it sucks and it’s yet another thing to do.

But these are my pennies, which will be turned into my coffee.

And yours!

Graham Coxon, “Easy” — clicked a (seemingly) new GC record in the feed and realized it was just a single from his 1998 solo LP reuploaded in 4K. Still rips! And it lead me to his new one, the Kinks-ian Castle Park. I remain very much in the bag for Old Blur (don’t need to know how many plays I am personally responsible for on this 2023 BBC live clip of “The Narcissist”) and seeing middle-aged GC strum around town with coffee and a newspaper makes me quite happy. Kanopy is a free streaming service you can watch with your library card.

If you don’t have a library card, jump off a bridge go get one!

The site features tons of (once again, completely free) titles I don’t encounter on other services, with a solid selection of indies and docs; Pretty Ugly: The Story Of The Lunachicks ticks every one of those boxes.

For those who didn’t grow up within the Coney Island High fallout zone, Lunachicks are an all-girl punk crew who made a name for themselves mashing lowbrow theatrics (ofc they met at Fame school) with Noo Yawk chaos and “babysitters on acid” charm.

The filmmakers lean into that spirit of sisterly mayhem. Every shot of the band kicking around the East Village as teenagers — an endless stream of sitcom references and goofy song ideas to crack each other up — is priceless.

Lunachicks were very much outside, from early Sonic Youth days (Kim and Thurston were set to produce their debut) to Warped Tour’s cultural peak; I caught them opening for No Doubt and Weezer in scenic Holmdel, NJ circa ‘97. But the commercial success of their peers remained elusive.

Midway through Pretty Ugly, we see The Offspring start touring with Lunachicks as an unknown, hair-braided support act. Their roles reversed once “you gotta keep ‘em separated” became an arena chant, seemingly overnight.

The Opener’s Journey is a product of fate.

For the Mountain Goats’ latest, John Darnielle (his episode of Poker Face is excellent btw) starts out riffing on one of the true ya had to be there ‘90s phenomenons and ends up with the best song Fountains Of Wayne never wrote, a big-hearted picaresque of kids with guitars (and “Ben, our friend who worked the business end”) stumbling through their own breakthrough: a summer spent warming up festival tents for a soon-to-be alt rock footnote.

You know exactly how this story ends once they touch the (flannel) hem of greatness, but the mood remains gently wistful rather than Tom Petty bleak. Their A&R man still don’t hear a single, “but if we ever find Ben we'll probably do it again, like we were young men — as we were then — with Candlebox.”

Every band’s realest opp is the indignity of time.

The paper of record asked Mick Jagger (!!!) if there’s anything good (“physically or metaphysically”) about getting older. His answer? “Nothing.”

There’s a particularly vulnerable moment in Pretty Ugly when guitarist Gina Volpe — fresh from visiting an enormous Vans billboard featuring a vintage (and sanitized) live photo of the band — wonders aloud about “the struggle of always being broke, and always trying to figure out, ‘what am I doing, this is crazy, I’m too old to be piecemealing my life together, I should have a real job…’ but that’s just not me. I’ve never stopped creating. If I stopped, I would probably die.”

There’s an even better one as she waffles over a (then theoretical) Lunachicks reunion with L7’s Donita Sparks, who immediately cuts her off and borderline screams, “stop thinking! Because thinking has never helped. You just go do what you’re built to go do.”

Sage advice at any age.

Just go do what you’re built to go do.

Flashing Lights was a (crazy) electronic dance party in the moments riiiiiiiight before “EDM” that Jubilee, DJ Ayres and myself threw with promoters Mean Red and Good Peoples at dim sum spot 88 Palace in Chinatown.

Technically, we started in 2008 at Public Assembly, a club in Williamsburg that was once Galapagos (and now, ironically, a Patagonia). There were also editions in Mehanata Bulgarian Bar’s ice cave, Gowanus’ BKLYN Yard, the late, lamented Glasslands and the even later / more lamented Studio B (literally on its closing weekend).

But 88 Palace, c’mon, print the legend!

An embarrassment of riches litness.

Open-minded musical selections, unpretentious vibes, and a wholly DIY enterprise from lasers to subs (shout to everyone who helped load in and out).

At the time, Flashing Lights was beloved as “NYC’s best (and only) house-techno-disco rave in a Chinese restaurant.” Guests included La Roux (her first US show), Todd Edwards, Flosstradamus, Kill The Noise, Congorock, The Martin Brothers, Dre Skull, Toddla T, Anna Lunoe, Douster, Kingdom, Nadastrom and tons more.

We even won Best Party at Paper Magazine’s sixth-annual Nightlife Awards but no one told us and the trophy remains lost to the sands of time.

Props aside, I truly loved that Flashing Lights was one of the rare places where you could see all your friends at once.

Our night was very dark, very fun and we sold drinks in Ziploc bags with glowsticks inside — a magical combination for many things, snapping flicks clearly not among ‘em.

This party has become increasingly impossible to look up on (thoroughly useless) Google, and all the photogs who were actively documenting at the time no longer seem to have websites. But here’s what I got!

Personally, I think the FL crew is long overdue for a reunion behind the decks; will leave that one up to the disco gods. But as a bonus beat, here’s three years of promo mixes re-upped on Mixcloud for ur streaming DJ enjoyment.

Mid-delirium from fasting (schedule ur colonoscopy, fellow kids) I find myself hyperfixating on the summer movie fast food tie-ins of 2026.

They are as stupid as I am hungry.

I’m stupid too! Weaned on Happy Meals, Kay-Bee and Saturday morning television, though ur boy has since retired from nugget-based dining out of bodily respect. Long after active duty deployment in the halcyon decade of Batman Forever glassware and Casper hand puppets, I continue to salute this medium from afar as a decorated veteran.

A quarter century removed from slinging Mace Windu pogs, Colonel Sanders is currently holding the bag for Supergirl, a film that children of all ages seem profoundly uninterested in. Nevertheless!

We’re turning the summer blockbuster ritual into a full fried chicken experience. Whether you’re Team Supergirl, Team Lobo or just here for the tenders, box meal meets the box office this summer in the most finger lickin’ good way.

Re: finger lickin’, I believe Lobo would find his, uh… signature sauce as appealing as this commemorative chalice.

Since Nolan already came through and crushed the buildings with a genius IMAX popcorn bucket — he put his whole Odussy in it — I’ll skip further concession stand offerings.

Besides, AMC is not a fast food chain, despite the best efforts of Bavarian Bites.

Neither is Denny’s (sorry Skeletor shake, you’re in a diner) or Papa Johns (takeout pizza requires its own cursed category, so I will rip on Toy Story 5’s Space Ranger Roni and Rootin Tootin Ranch at another time).

We come to this place for Burger King.

The Home Of The Whopper also bet on a franchise underperformer, tho I must admit their Mando crown goes hard. Grogu’s Garlic Chicken Fry 12pc — designed to fit in a car cup holder! — would get destroyed on a weekly basis if it came with a side of the metabolism I possessed during Episode One’s theatrical run.

McDs pivoted to the pitch this year, leaving Wendy’s as the last childhood staple worth breaking edge for.

Not just to dunk a french fry in a shake once again, but to enjoy this season’s only decent drive-thru pairing…

Just got back from a long weekend in Tennessee for the 13th Annual Chattanooga Film Festival, the long-running genre destination where my short film Packages made it’s debut.

Indie film vibes are… in flux!

But the homespun energy here was fantastic.

Went in dolo on Thursday to soak up the programming (Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex was a delight, as was Italian tone poem Orfeo), the local offerings (shout out Crocbuster Video’s fine VHS selection and Snapdragon Hemp’s Lemonade Haze) and the aquarium (a fantastic place to hear women with Glorilla’s accent pronounce “aquarium” while dudes with Nate Bargatze’s mutter “that’s a big fella” every couple feet).

On the closing day of in-person screenings, my producer Sandy and costume designer Cass joined me (and our very special guest) to present alongside the rest of CFF’s Sunday shorts — our first time seeing Packages in a proper theatre, alongside humans who didn’t help make it.

Felt great!

It was thoroughly inspiring to watch everyone else’s shorts, a unique mix of styles and approaches from around the globe. One featured the voice of Ben 10 as a private eye, one had music by old pal Bird Peterson, one starred a wall udder.

When I was passed the mic, all I really wanted to express was appreciation for the fact that a movie can be anything, and how happy I was that we all made our own distinct, personal versions.

Keeping an eye out for what everyone does next…

Missing tomorrow’s parade for my flight is an enormous bummer, but it has been an absolutely magical start to Summer 2K26.

While I’ve never counted myself amongst their ranks, very happy for everyone who has since moved on to losing their minds over the World Cup.

Always down to partake as a casual — lunch beers are lunch beers — but outside of a stray Baggio sighting or general “guess I’m glad USA is good?” I have no real emotional connection to specific countries / matches / players, etc.

With one giant exception…

I mean, hell yeah amigo.

The Purple One is no stranger to inspiration, but now there’s an added solidarity component? Considering the uptick in overall xenophobia over the last few years, this promo put me in my feels to a degree I was not prepared for.

Legit emotional over this comment: “Grimace is technically Filipino because he’s made out of ube but Mexicans are our cousins anyways so all good 🤝”.

It’s silly, but so are sports (said with love). Doesn’t make either any less poignant or unifying!

“In its most simplistic form, people just want community.”

If you go looking for bad you’ll find it, especially if it involves fast food, billionaire-owned athletic franchises or (gulp) regional pride. But when the basic concept of togetherness feels harder and harder to grasp IRL, I’ll take the imperfect vessel.

As an old person geriatric millennial, I should be used to the fact that all pop culture commemorations and release date observances feel legit insane now.

Still, haven’t been able to wrap my head around the fact that Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper” is currently celebrating it’s thirtieth (!!!) anniversary.

If you’re not up on band lore, there is a documentary with the fantastic title The Hole Truth And Nothing Butt as well as an oral history of Texas punk out this fall with an even better one, Someday All The Adults Will Die!

TL:DR is broadly: Austin maniacs who turned druggy experimental music and confrontational live performances into a multi-decade career, littered with side quests from Todd Flanders to CB4 to Supreme.

“Groundbreakingly talented and undeniably perverse,” as David Letterman put it moments before frontman Gibby Haynes attempted to burn down the Ed Sullivan Theatre.

The most perverse thing they ever did was have an actual hit.

Like many of their peers, BH caught a whiff of Buzz Bin-adjacent success in Nirvana’s wake. But Cornholio himself could never in a million years imagine this band going Top 40 with “Pepper” in the Summer of ‘96.

Some pegged the tune as a piss take on Beck’s “Loser,” but that’s selling it short. In fact, Gibby’s on record as a fan, per “Songs That Explain The ‘90s”:

Beck meeting the lead singer of the Butthole Surfers, and the lead singer of the Butthole Surfers liking Beck, it’s like finding out that the Muppets universe coexists with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre universe. My first thought was, Beck and Gibby Haynes don’t live on the same planet. And my second thought was, Of course they fucking do.

“Pepper” was — and still is! — a candy apple with a worm rotting inside, pulling a gold certified fast one in the final days of major label largesse and MTV monoculture. Breakbeats were powering everything from Madonna to “MMMbop” at the time (shout out Dust Brothers, always) but the Surfers were interested in subversion, not sample pop.

There’s a Charles Burns’ Black Hole quality to Gibby’s teenage sex ‘n death lyrics: “Marky got with Sharon / Sharon got Sherice / She was sharin’ Sharon’s outlook on the topic of disease / Mikey had a facial scar, and Bobby was a racist / They were all in love with dyin’, they were doin’ it in Texas…”

Meanwhile, Gavin Bowden’s music video paired Lee Harvey Oswald aesthetics with Erik Estrada and a conga line of cops in cowboy hats.

This isn’t ironic collage; it’s Misfits-worthy Americana.

Their (death) trip hop detour would also bless us with a Romeo+Juliet OST highlight — no small feat — plus some UNKLE and Rabbit On The Moon remixes, tho the band never truly capitalized on “Pepper” and its surprise success.

I doubt they even wanted to!

Three decades later (again: yikes) I still have an enormous soft spot for anything that shares even a hint of “Pepper” DNA. Feels like there’s been an uptick lately, from FCUKERS’ slack sprezzatura to this Monster Rally x Allah-Las jam, both carrying the weirdo torch of their ancestors.

Quite possible these aren’t individual moments so much as one ongoing loop.

The Cleaners From Venus’ spoken-wordish “No Go (For Louis Macneice)” — a 1990 cassette release based on a 1930s poem about societal decay — stopped me cold at Furnish Green the other day, while my brain screamed YOOOOO HE DID THE “PEPPER” FLOW FIRST!?!?

This is a safe space to scream about flows.

Gibby’s got a month-long residency happening at Union Pool in August, and the band’s Electriclarryland follow-up LP finally drops in its original, unedited form at the end of the month.

Time is a flat circle.

JK, I am clearly talking The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s latest Big Ass Movie (complimentary) and an adaptation of Homer’s (not that one) epic poem.

Release week MOTU buzz has been pretty quiet outside of Tomatometer debates and Denny’s commercials (idc got tix for Thursday). But Chris and the boys are kicking off their full-court promo press early, starting with this three-way GQ cover shoot that’s already one of the Summer’s best.

Not for any of the fits — tho who couldn’t use a flowy diaphanous tank or Belt By Artemas Quibble — but the full cast’s commitment to Blue Steel.

I mean?!?

Need textless version ASAP to craft HOW THE HOT POCKET LOOK AT U FROM INSIDE THE MICROWAVE meme.

Lewks-maxxing abounds; we also get fisticuff antics, that reflecting pool up top (shout out Plastic Little) and various props of enormous scale.

Perhaps the lesson is that working on a Serious Epic Film, The Kind They Just Don’t Make Anymore and busting incredibly silly moves in even sillier outfits aren’t mutually exclusive pursuits.

Been a long stretch of “it feels crazy out there,” in ways that are increasingly difficult to articulate.

I am partial to these guys: 🥴😵‍💫🫠.

When it comes to language’s inability to meet our present moment, closest I can get to verbalizing my feelings towards the New York Knicks’ first Finals appearance since 1999 — off a winning streak that is “literally the most dominating 11-game run in the history of the NBA, regardless of playoffs or regular season” — is roughly AGKSDGKJHSDFKJHDSJKFHGKJ.

It’s the sort of thing that makes grown men write headlines like ALL THE PAIN WAS WORTH IT while seriously considering the role of pro wrestler Danhausen’s role in cursing / uncursing the (once perennially disappointing) franchise.

That might seem over the top, but it’s on brand; I have definitely yelled “KILLING SELF POSTPONED” at the buzzer of a close one, and “NEED TO SEE THE BODY” while Tyler Kolek gets looks in the closing minutes of these recent blowouts.

Blowouts! What is happening?!?

“Since 1999” is a span of time that encompasses my entire adulthood and all its respective ups and downs, wins and losses, etc (not like anything particularly auspicious is happening in my life at the moment lol). Could get more reflective but I’m just glad we are trauma bonded sharing a positive collective experience for the first time in quite a while.

Even in a time of increasingly brain-stabby daily indignations…

The best parts of Martin Scorsese’s Apple TV doc are clips of his teenage production Vesuvius VI, filmed with a few friends (and a lotta fake blood) in and around the family apartment, well before our guy spent a single day in film school.

I’m lying, actual best is whenever ex-wife Isabella Rossellini finds a new way to refer to him as a short, angry guy (“theees minuscule man, feeeld with so much rage…”) but for the sake of this post just rock with me.

Director Rebecca Miller shared some Vesuvius context with Interview:

It’s fun watching [Scorsese] grapple with his pattern and almost be uncomfortable with some of his early choices. Of course, he wouldn’t be who he is if he hadn’t gone through all of that… he was so worried about it because he still cares. It’s juvenilia, but it’s still his film. He was like, “Please don’t use that shot. Use that shot.” His criticism was still extending to even his 16-year-old self.

I’d link the actual short here, but blessedly cannot.

If Marty were a kid today, it would have hit YouTube or TikTok the second he finished the edit, then continue to circulate everywhere in perpetuity.

It’s a gift to get your earliest reps in outside of the public eye.

New grads are currently taking cap ‘n gown photos (congrats and/or sorry) while multi-purpose cleaning fluid once again sends notes of “empty dorm” wafting through the East Village, a Proustian madeleine leading me by the nose to my first ever design gig: making student posters for the NYU Program Board at the dawn of the early-aughts “rock revival.”

Those are insane five-dollar lineups.

RIP Gregg Foreman.

Shout out Dan Traci for commissioning all this art in the first place (though it’s likely I was the only board member who volunteered). These PB posters were literal ephemera, printed out, taped up and sent to the recycling bin within a week or two. I cranked ‘em out monthly on a cracked Photoshop 6 for a few years, and the 11x17s that survived are now on my floor.

Some are dope, some are cringe, some just deeply mid. Occasionally all at once (what am I, a Drake album?) but individual merit aside, these amateur efforts tapped a deep well of creative freedom — a place to abuse DaFont dot com and sample LIFE Magazine ads without oversight, forming the Lucy skeleton of an aesthetic signature that’s stuck around in one form or another to this day.

I was always looking at other people thinking I wish I could do this, and eventually your style just kinda comes out. Like your handwriting, you can try and copy somebody else's handwriting and it always reverts back to your own when you start going faster or concentrating on what you're writing rather than the way the writing looks. But in both writing and art, what comes out, if you're being honest, is yourself.

By the time I flung my own mortarboard like a Shmurda fitted, there were some solid entries in the catalog. I still dig this riff on Chip Kidd’s Plastic Fang sleeve and the time I paired Ian Svenonius with a lil' Japanese candy dude.

The moral here isn’t the two keepers, but that enormous stretch of open road before ‘em, filled with experimentation and not knowing any better. Naivete is a superpower, and creation remains an instinctive, iterative process at every level.

For instance, Zach Cregger calls his writer’s block antidote “elfing.”

He pretends that he is an elf (lol) hired on the cheap to write a screenplay as fast as possible, knowing that the results will 100% be terrible — he’s an elf after all — but at least they will be done, and hopefully contain some nugs of true inspiration that overthinking (again, impossible for elf) would have blocked. Then Human Zach can come in afterwards to revise and refine and revise and refine a completed script until it resembles something close to worthwhile.

May we all get our bad drafts out, post haste.

Was saving that Biggie bon mot for a Chainsaw Awards acceptance speech, but life is short and so is my film.

Now that the announcement is live, I can finally share that Packages is an official selection of the 2026 Chattanooga Film Festival!

We’re playing alongside all these shorts on Sunday, June 21st.

Very much looking forward to watching Packages for the first time on a proper screen in a dark room with a bunch of strangers. Extremely curious to meet my fellow filmmakers and see what the rest of the programming has in store; the CFF lineup looks bugged out in the best possible way.

Passes are available on their website, and there’s also a virtual component for folks who want to stream the festival programming at home.

Any time something even mildly positive happens within a 20 mile radius, I like to exclaim “the city is electric!”

I am prone to exclamations.

On occasion, it is actually true.

This time last year, Peak Spring was colliding with a Knicks playoff surge, and the ambient energy could only be described as an inverted Ghostbusters II situation, with the underground river of psychomagnotheric slime turning everyone happy / horny / helpful instead of shitty / cranky / evil.

The vibes were immaculate.

Perfect time to go outside and make a movie!

It’s been nice to have this Substack as a real-time filmmaking diary of my first short, from lead up and on-set documentation to post production, crew screenings and the emotional rollercoaster of festival submissions.

Developments on that last front can be announced (!!!) soon, but what I most want to express now — after three intoxicating days of making followed by 365 of waiting — remains an ocean of thanks for all the folks who dove in with me.

I’m jotting this down after running into our 1st AD while grabbing a Sunday morning coffee; literally could not have made Packages without her, and the same goes for everyone else in the mix.

Fung Wah Bus memories — salute a real soldier. It’s fun when bands are pals!

Considering how commonplace the guest appearance is in other genres, it still feels rare whenever you catch a properly fuzzbox’d team-up.

Even more so three decades ago…

These peak alt-era collabs have serendipitously made their way back into heavy personal rotation (shocking). When it comes to personal favorites, I’m leaving out Prodigy ft. Republica and Korn ft. Deftones for being a bit too uuurrrrggghhh (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and overlooking obvious supergroup situations. It’s my party and I’ll be as non-comprehensive as I want to!

These are just some sweet n’ sour jams that happen to play nice with each other.

Nick Egan deserves a dedicated ‘stack; the Anthology Film Archives screening of his and Malcolm McLaren’s Duck Rock this past January was a highlight of my birthday weekend. Quick shout for directing this Catherine Wheel / Belly single (a wholesome outlier on the deliciously dour Happy Days) will have to do.

While we’re sprinkling praise throughout the Case Logic binder, gotta big up Kimberly Ann Deal for being the feature GOAT, pulling a Dinosaur Jr alliance and a Sonic Youth guest spot together within the space of two Lollapaloozas.

Would love for SY’s video-only Bikini Kill cameo “Bull In The Heather” to count here solely so I can post Kim on Letterman in a Starks jersey while the Knicks are (for now) playoff contenders. Alas…

Weezer / That Dog extended universe has it’s fair share of crossovers but this atomic weapon of power pop crunch still tops Blue Album / Pinkerton b-side power rankings by a wide margin, no small feat.

Only recently discovered the Manics / Cardigans earworm that won “Best Track” at the 2007 Q Awards (was busy that year, my bad).

Haley Williams might be our O-negative for this phenomenon circa 2026, linking up with This Is Lorelei, Jay Som, Moses Sumney and David Byrne over the past year before popping up on Failure’s fantastic planet new album last Friday.

Hoping it’s a harbinger for more!

Today is Kerin Rose Gold’s birthday!

Since my wife spends her time in the newspaper instead of writing Substacks, gonna use today’s blast to shout out some of her recent and incredibly sparkly projects (that all dropped within what felt like a single week).

Already did my Borat voice joke so no further preamble needed, but I would like to note: while I obviously have much gratitude for KRG’s fine work in the field of keeping me alive our lights on, all these are included solely because I think they are / she is very cool.

These (as seen in the pic up top) are an original a-morir creation, the Chibi. Insane work in the best possible way; if you’re in LA go try a pair on at Gogosha Optique.

Kerin designed the Chibi in her studio, recently showcased in this cute vid by alt milk upstarts Minor Figures. It is filled with many, many, many crystals (that I will occasionally find on my body and mistake for a burrowing tick).

It’s also where she crafted a bonkers Crocs (!!!) outfit for Dixie D’Amelio…

And these embellished pointe shoes (which you still have a couple days to bid on) for the annual Youth America Grand Prix benefit at Lincoln Center, where they also snapped her hurtin ‘em in a caftan.
