The best end of summer present, ever, just came… I was featured in VOGUE! What in the actual hell?! It’s a literal dream come true and I’m going to write more about this next week, because it was more than just an article to me. So much ‘came up for me’ with a recognition like this, with life lessons worth sharing. I’m just beyond humbled and grateful. Wow, thank you, thank you Vogue!!! 💫

Other than that, I had a slow, simple, and delicious summer. It was the most freeing, liberating summer EVER — a long list of personal stories I will share for another time — and it allowed me to be… probably the most productive I’ve ever been in my life, all while successfully mastering the art of actually savoring the summer. So, I’d venture to say it was a pretty perfect summer.

I know it’s really annoying to say that Summer is over, but all my fashion girls know this: September-October is our Super Bowl. So while everyone takes their end of summer vacations, we are locked the fuck in and working OT in the name of fashion to get us giddy for SS27. I have three more New York trips on my calendar this year, a work trip to Amsterdam in a few weeks, and I need to squeeze in Taipei and hopefully Seoul (why not so close right?!) soooooo…

Ok well I’m starting to shop for all things Fall — specifically in search of new jeans and boots — and will report back. In the meantime, the end of summer sales are starting to roll in and I’ve listed a few worth browsing. I’ve been trying to publish this all week, but damn, there are not enough hours in a day. I will say, I do love whatever is in the water right now because I’ve been productive and energized as hell. I’ve been having just as much ~*fun*~ as I’m working hard, and every time I notice this balance, I feel on top of the world. It’s been equal nights of champagne and steak dinners to farmer’s markets and home cooked meals to late night cackling in sexy bars and B list celebrity sightings and getting in bed at 8pm to obsess over my dragon books — all while working my ass off for the most fun and exciting brands and launches and big things to come (!!!!)

Summer is never ‘over’ in LA, but I’m starting to feel it winding down as work ramps up for September and October, with somehow most of my calendar booked up through Thanksgiving (what the actual hell?). It’s going to be extra beach time, extra margaritas, and extra fun until we say summer is officially over.

Anyway, last night was a late one, so we balance it out by 9pm in bed tonight. I just made these collages while chatting on the phone with my bestie in New York gossiping about a hilarious last night while she packs for her Euro summer. I just sent her my packing list, so here it is for you too.

NOTES FROM THE WEEK 💌

1. THE wet vac that I’ve somehow become known for is currently 44% off! Yes, it vacuums and mops at the same time. I use this in my kitchen at least 3-4x a week after I cook and it gets all the oil splatters gone in seconds. I cannot live without this.

I’ve done a lot of reflecting lately and the good news is, I’m pretty sure my life is just getting started. I’m a ‘find the silver linings’ kind of girl, but the thing about silver linings is that you don’t necessarily find one without that dark and stormy cloud having been real first.

I went on a date earlier this year in New York. We were having such a great time at dinner that we decided to continue the night and go for a nightcap at a cool, underground sake bar (iykyk). We walked in and he excitedly asked me, “Have you been here before?!” thinking he was the first to bring me here. It took me a few seconds to recognize where we were and the lightbulb went off. I’d been here with an ex and we had gotten into one of our worst fights. It was a miserable experience inside a very cool place, where I huffed and puffed until we left. I can still remember it vividly… the fight ending in the streets somewhere along 2nd Avenue. I was so, so miserable.

On my cab home after this more recent date, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. I had successfully rewritten history. This time around at the sake bar, I sat cozied up to a sexy stranger I had only met three hours ago. We laughed, we drank, we kissed. We stumbled onto 9th Street and crossed 2nd Avenue where he bought me flowers from a bodega and asked me on a second date. We kissed in front of someone’s door, then walked to 1st Avenue where he called me a car back to the Upper West Side.

It’s moments like this where I can’t help but think: Thank god for that shitty experience back then, because it made this new experience infinitely better.

Perspective is a complex, beautiful, and absolutely necessary thing. It doesn't erase the bad memories. The fight on 2nd Avenue still happened… but now when I think of that bar, a different night comes first. We’re not tied to that once-shitty moment forever, we don’t have to hold a grudge against that person. We can break free from it. That's the rewrite! That's the whole thing!

I have countless experiences like this from dating… I could write an entire book. And I’m realizing that perspective is part of my superpower. I’m meant to experience different types of love (it’s part of my Human Design, full post on this coming soon!!) Rewriting history means chipping away at the healing. And it’s all types of healing, not just heartbreak from a boyfriend… after all, all pain is interconnected. And now I finally understand that being single at 36 isn’t failure. I’ve had multiple, beautiful loves and the reframe is: how lucky am I? I have endless memories, truly fond ones. I’ve lived nine lives.

And it's not just romance that gets rewritten this way though. I also constantly think about how different my life is without my mom, who I lost to cancer six years ago. It’s gotten ‘easier,’ but the sadness comes in waves. It hits me out of nowhere. Just the other day at Trader Joe’s, I saw a petite woman who had the same framework as my sweet mama and it shattered me momentarily. I froze, then went through a quick cycle of sadness to anger to acceptance to gratitude. It took me twice as long to finish my shopping because I was in such a daze. It really threw me off.

I can’t always pinpoint what I'm ‘grateful’ for yet when it comes to losing her, but perspective doesn’t come when we want it to, it just sort of… happens in a random, (usually) unexpected moment. I think of a Joseph Campbell quote I recently read that said: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” I think walking back into hard places like the sake bars, the grocery stores, writing these essays… is somehow the whole point. And as I’ve written before… the only way out is through.

Fittingly enough, I finally cancelled my mom’s cell phone line from our family plan this week. It took me six and a half years. I had genuinely forgotten about it, but closing that line was powerful shed I didn’t realize I needed.

My brother and sister in law just sold their house that mother passed away in (we did at-home hospice) — and knowing I never have to be within those four walls again is unexpectedly freeing. It's not something I thought about every time I walked in over the last six years, but I feel the weight lift now that it's gone. And in a strange, beautiful twist of timing, they’re moving back into my childhood home, which has been renovated, but still recognizable. There’s something about being in a home that my mother so lovingly created for us — a safe space where my niece and nephew now get to call home. How beautiful and full circle is that?

Death and heartbreak are universal experiences that I find myself talking about over and over again. I’m always finding the lessons… the silver linings. I’m wildly optimistic and writing this reminds me that I want to continue leaning into that. And it seems like a small corner of the Internet finds solace in knowing that I see you.

My bestie Amanda and I are constantly talking about the daily ins and outs of life. I told her a story about a boyfriend from ~roughly~ five boyfriends ago, and she laughed and said, “How have I never heard of this guy?! You’ve really lived nine lives.” And voila, all thanks to my girl, we found the name of my Substack.

It’s been two years since I’ve been writing here and I’m so glad I waited to find a name that felt right. So long “Cat’s Substack”… you were wonderful and I loved you. Thanks for getting me on my own two feet, but onto the next life.

So, I’m here to officially rebrand. WELCOME TO NINE LIVES! This will continue to be a place where I talk about the experiences that’ve shaped me and my thinking, but now with a bit more purpose and direction. I’m going to share more on love, loss, and friendship, sprinkled in with the light and breezy recommendations, travel, work, and whatever is on my heart. And of course, tell me what you want to read more of! I’m an open book and ready to write my heart out.

I have no idea what number life I'm on now, but it feels early and the plot is just getting started. 36 years young with an entire lifetime ahead. As my best friend said to me tonight — “You should ABP” aka always be peaking!! — and I couldn’t have said it better myself. The best is yet to come and I genuinely can't wait to see what comes my way — and I’m bringing you along for the ride :)

FROM THE ARCHIVES 💌

So much has happened since I wrote about that absolutely perfect trip to Venice and Lisbon. I had to re-read that post, because I genuinely couldn’t remember what I have and haven’t shared yet. Now that I’m well-rested and slowly getting caught up on ‘life’ (do we ever? what does this even mean?) — I’m here to share the latest in Vol. 11.

This Mercury in Retrograde nearly killed me, but I’m here to tell the tale. Work has pretty much taken up every minute and I feel nothing but gratitude for the opportunities and fun I have along the way. So yeah, I didn’t leave Pasadena this weekend, aside from dinner with besties at Living Room on Friday night, which filled my friendship cup to the brink and I couldn’t be happier. I count my lucky stars for weekends like this — staying in bed with a book and coffee, the farmer’s market, a yoga class, cooking every meal, arranging fresh florals, watering my garden, FaceTime-ing my family, working on this!!!, cleaning and organizing odd corners of my house with jazz playing and the AC blasting.

Here’s the jazz playlist I’ve been listening to, with the cover art from a night wandering the streets of Tokyo with a lover. I remember stopping in my tracks at this beautiful display of azaleas and taking this photo — and while he took a photo of me, taking a photo, he took a step back and a woman on a bike slammed into him, she fell off her bike and he got a huge gash on his leg. Everyone was fine, then we drank a fuck ton of sake. Oh memory lane… what a blessing and a bitch!

NOTES FROM THE WEEK 💌

1. These $35 Sun Earrings from the Luv AJ x Target collection. I’ve been wearing these and this bangle set all summer. Yes my bestie Amanda is the coolest girl in the world!!

2. Chan Luu goes Bridal. We launched the Bridal Collection last week in between 2 (!!) photoshoots and it’s a really special capsule. Brooches, jewelry, and ready to wear. This Techno Taffeta Shift Shirt that doubles as a dress is PERFECT

3. These cotton Chan Luu pants that I got complimented on more than anything else this month. Not to mention, they are chic as fuck!

4. Very into wall clocks. I have two from Japanese design firm Lemnos and can’t recommend them enough. I have this blue one, but I love this one and this one.

5. This slim, tan leather clutch that goes with everything. The quality is unmatched, I’ve been using it daily.

6. I’m obsessed with Fourth Wing. I admittedly still love ACOTAR more (so far at least), but guys, I looooove it.

7. These Minnow French Terrycloth Shorts. I’ve been living in these at home and running around town. I wore them to the farmer’s market this morning with a white Hanes Tank and white Salomon sneakers.

8. Nail Polish of the Week is Babydoll by Celisse. Two coats of this is best sheer-ish baby pink and I’m probably going to wear this until… forever. Don’t forget to add the Cuticle Pen and Top Coat to your cart, it’s the best top coat since Seche Vite IYKYK

9. A $10 collapsible stepping stool for every room in the house. I have one in my laundry room, each of my closets, the garage / kitchen. They are tiny and so easy to store.

10. My favorite summer tinted SPF and sheer, dewey coverage. I really do wear this every single day. I loved how my skin looked while wearing this in Europe in humid weather too. I’m shade ST11 in the summer and ST9 in the winter :)

11. Hanes Tanks, 6 for $20. I’ve literally worn one of six Hanes tanks every other day for the last month. No matter how many other plain white tanks I own, I still love these the most. I cut them all in half with these $9 fabric scissors — and yes, I cut them in various cropped lengths because you need a different length for different occasions (ie work appropriate vs not)

12. On a sneaker hunt and these are on my list: Adidas x Song for the Mute come in really great colors and these Dries van Noten suede in yellow.

13. More cute shoes I want. I have never been a jelly shoe girl, but these Heavenly Jelly ones are changing my mind after I’ve seen my girls and wearing them.

14. I also need a simple black wedge and these are perfect.

15. Buck Mason Toughknit White Tee. It’s a crispy, just heavy enough white tee that should earn a spot in your white tee collection. I’ve been wearing it for the last couple of months and will be perfect for cooler months ahead. I wear an XS but an S or M would be ideal too.

16. I need to write a piece on interior design styling kits. Adding this to my to-do list, but two things I used on set this week: a rug rake and a duster.

17. This Nicky Kehoe Lemon Pitcher. I first saw share this a few days ago and now I can’t stop thinking about it.

I keep it pretty lite on the main attractions, I avoid anywhere with too many reviews, and I could easily sit for a four hour lunch without seeing the sites. So, this is by no means a travel guide, but a little diary of my favorite things I got to see that I recommend :)

LISBON 💌

I’ll start with Lisbon, because I really did leave a piece of my heart there. I’d been there once before, but this trip absolutely sealed the deal for me, confirming that Lisbon is in fact one of the most incredible European cities. The warmth and friendliness of the people are contagious. I couldn’t help but smile the entire time

I stayed at a home in Santos, and even with my limited knowledge of Lisbon, I’ve already decided this is where I would live. Every corner is a cute café, coffee shop, bar, restaurant or park. Attractive, stylish people. A very active nightlife.

This is a bold statement, but Lisbon might be one of the best culinary cities. Every single of bite of food was so beautifully presented and delicious. It’s healthy, they don’t over do it with the portions, and it’s much more affordable (compared to the US).

My favorite bites: Albi for breakfast, get the huevos rancheros with an iced coconut water matcha latte. Da Noi for the impeccable vibes at the bar and the cacio e pepe beans. An outdoor table at Magnolia for a late lunch when it’s not crowded. Café de São Bento for a perfect martini, potato crisps, and steak for when you need a break from the seafood.

My favorite spots: Praça das Flores (aka PDF) for the vibes, especially during the World Cup. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara has one of the best views of the city, especially lovely at sunset. Grab a beer at Jardim do Alto de Santa Catarina, also at sunset. A Vida Portuguesa is by far the cutest store. I didn’t do much shopping this trip, but I’d go here for the chicest tinned fish, stationary, and kitchen goods.

I actually spent two entire days in Lisbon catching up on work and resting after Venice, which had me cosplaying as a resident of Lisbon and I’ve got to say, it’s a good life there. We had a beach day at Praia do Rei, which is only a 30 minute taxi ride from the city, where there are beautiful beach clubs to grab drinks. Like I said… it’s kind of a perfect city. I’m missing so many things, but these are the highlights :)

VENICE 💌

How is this place real? For starters, book a private water taxi from the Venice airpot into the city well in advance (it’s nearly impossible to get one same day to the airport during the high season). The experience is worth every penny, and also comparable to the price of an Uber from Pasadena to LAX, so there’s that.

I went for the Biennale and holy hell is there a lot of art to consume. We spent most of our time at the Giardini della Biennale, which blew my mind away. Each country’s pavilion carried so much pride within every detail, particularly the architecture that housed the season’s featured work. The entire concept of the permanent pavilions moved me… I love that a place like this exists in the world. We were lucky enough to catch the Fondazione Dries Van Noten at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, and if you happen to visit Venice in the next few months, I highly recommend a visit before it closes in October. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection was impressive — Picasso, Calder, Pollack galore. Amoako Boafo’s work at the Palazzo Grimani was beautiful. We barely scratched the surface on all the exhibits across the city, but what I did see was absolutely incredible.

We had a spectacularly decadent and delicious night at the Airelles for cocktails and dinner with friends. But overall, the food in Venice was subpar and I don’t have anything to recommend. It was all a bit too touristy for me, with silly things like €33 mini martinis at Gritti Palace. We had an adorable dinner in a quiet square one night and I didn’t even get the name of the restaurant, but it was perfect.

I would have spent some time perusing Murano glass if I wasn’t art-ing so hard, so I guess I’ll have to find my way back.

WHAT I WORE 💌

I did an absolute shit job at taking photos of my outfits while I was there, but I took these photos while I was packing — and I wore all of these a couple of times. Sooo here’s the breakdown.

1. The shoes that got me through 20K+ steps a day. I’m new to discover Thousand Fell and I am shocked at how comfortable these shoes are. The insole is so soft and supportive and require zero time to break in. I took a risk and wore them on Day 1 and can confirm they are incredible. I wore them on both travel days and literally ALL day for art hopping in Venice.

By week, I’ve been heads down in work, working out, sleeping, cooking, enjoying solitude in Pasadena, and just some good ol fashion adulting.

By weekend, it’s been FUN o’clock. We work hard and play hard around here. Damn, I love summer so much!! Let’s see… it’s been everything from hours and hours on the beach, rooftop DJ sets, pizza night at home with my gfs, party buses, a 4th and 40th birthday party, World Cup games, sleepovers with my besties, James Blake at the Greek, and so much rosé and spicy margaritas.

I also spent a lot of time organizing my Substack this last week to make it a bit easier to navigate as I invest more time and energy into creating on here. I’m also starting a new series called Dear Diary this week (hopefully!!), which is going to be all about love and dating and my journey and learnings. 4. My 2 minute summer skin routine is easy breezy glowy and beautiful. I was doing my makeup with my bestie before brunch the other morning and she told me I had to share the rundown, so here you go!

   1. Saie Glowy Gel is the best glowy skin prep product. I use Starglow or Warmglow. It’s an instant glow — sometimes I just wear this, SPF, and a little bronzer.

The best trips are the ones that you actually come home feeling alive, inspired, and rejuvenated. You’re glowing from the humidity. You read 1-2 books. You drink lunch wine, you swim in the ocean, you take sunset naps.

My travel style's changed a lot over the years. I used to cram it all in — I made my bffs Rach and Marly do absolutely everything in Paris on two separate trips. Now I go to Paris and all I want to do is sit in the Tuileries. Someone asked me what I do in Taipei every year and I really had to think about it, because aside from eating, so much of it's just spent relaxing at our home with my dad.

I’m very calm with flight delays and detours now, too. (If any of my ex-boyfriends are reading this, I’m sure you’re howling but it’s true now). Maybe because I don’t have children to rush home to? Or I’ve simply surrendered to what’s out of my control? (I like to think this, at least). One of my favorite travel memories was a storm that cancelled my flight from London to Lisbon. I spent the rainy night in London and went directly to Dishoom to drink martinis and eat butter chicken. Or more recently, the NYC blizzard trapped me in the city for five extra days, where I had the most magical, wine-induced-coma at my bestie’s house on the Upper West Side while frolicking through a freshly dusted Central Park.

This year has actually been one of my slowest in a while, travel-wise. I'm staying local-ish this summer and couldn't be happier. I'm locked the fuck in with work and big life changes, and being home in LA just feels right.

TRAVEL MUST HAVES 🌎

1. Carry On. I bring either this Classic Black Leather Bag or this Straw Tote to my seat (yes, they both zip!) and these are the things I must have in my carry on to happily sit in 36G:

   1. Eye Drops. You know you’re getting dry eyes after a snooze on the plane, and these are the best of the best.

   2. Eye Mask. The best $19 you can spend for a significantly better plane nap.

   3. Hand Sanitizer. A slim hand sanitizer that smells like Eucalyptus or Lavender.

   4. Hand Wipes. Yes, I double down.

   5. Kiehl’s Hand Cream. Best ever. Nothing worse than dry hands after you wash your hands on the plane! (currently on sale for Prime Day!)

   6. Kindle. It’s the greatest for travel, do not argue with me on this!

   7. Necessaire Lip Balm. I keep this in my pocket on the plane for easy access.

   8. Portable Charger. This one is magnetic and slim (I also love it for work while I’m on set). This one is sliiiightly larger but it charges quicker.

   9. And all of this goes in this bag!

2. Coin Purse. Always, always have cash in the local currency! And have a coin purse for change like this cutie $50 brown leather one, but also this red Jil Sander, or pink!

3. Dual Voltage Hair Tools. T3 finally made a dual voltage airwrap and I’m shocked it took this long?! We can finally do our hair for European weddings!!!!

4. Dual Voltage Travel Steamer (currently on sale!). I’ve owned mine for a year+ now and it’s steamed multiple wedding guest dresses, entire clothing collections for brand photoshoots, and it even has an iron setting. This is the absolute best of the best.

5. Headphones. I only bring my noise cancelling headphones for international flights because they take up too much room in my bag 🙃 but I’m a forever Bose girl (and they’re on sale!)

6. Journal and Pen. I get some of my deepest thoughts and best ideas when I’m on the road (at least for vaca). I always, always have my journal and pen with me — especially when I’m walking around a city.

7. Packing Cubes (currently on sale!). These compression cubes changed my life 3 years ago and I’ve never ever looked back.

8. Pillow-ish. The least offensive and least embarrassing travel ‘pillow’

9. Portable Chargers. This one is magnetic and slim (I also love it for work while I’m on set). This one is sliiiightly larger but it charges quicker.

10. A lightweight scarf. Why are flights either so hot or freezing? Pack this scarf which is small and easily fits in your carry on.

11. SNACKS!! Fear of starvation on a plane is real, which is why I always have Chomps (I have this on a subscription lol) and protein bars on me.

12. Suitcases. I love checking in a bag… sue me. I’ve been an Away girl since they launched 10 years ago and this is my line up:

    1. Carry-On. I have the Carry-On Flex which even passed an EasyJet flight carry-on which is the only test worth passing.

    2. Check In. I finally started using a Trunk this year and I’m obsessed with the functionality. It’s sooo much better than a regular sized suitcase, but I do have this Medium check-in bag which is perfect because it’s hard to go overweight with it.

    3. Plane Bag. It must have a strap to hang onto the carry on itself and a zipper. I have this Leather Black Bag and this Straw Tote — two very different vibes but both super sturdy and reliable.

13. Supplements.

    1. Activated Charcoal. An absolute must have. Take these if you get an upset stomach from foreign food and it’ll save you.

    2. Wellness Liquid Drops. To help fight extra germs from the plane.

    3. Put all your supplements in reusable pill bags like these.

14. A sweater no matter the weather. I always miss the comfort of my favorite cozy sweater when I’m away from home. Pack something light and neutral like this!

15. Tea + Drinks. I prefer to drink the local fare, but if you’re a creature of habit, I’ve traveled with all of these in case your hotel room isn’t stocked.

    1. These instant coffee packets are sooooo good if you hate a Nespresso pod like me. This mushroom coffee alternative is amazing too.

    2. If you need a morning matcha, look no further than these individual matcha packets from Cap Beauty cc . Code: CAT15

    3. These individual honey packets are the cutest and I use them all the time!!

    4. This Coconut Powder Creamer is sooo tasty, the vanilla is great too

16. Toiletry Case. I have two sets of this Cuyana set and I love them. This one for the men!

    1. My post flight ritual is a Dr. Dennis Gross Peel followed by a Biodance Sheet Masks (currently on sale for Prime Day!), always. Trust me on this deep clean and deep hydration combo! And they are so easy to pack.

    2. Summer Fridays Eye Patches, duh!

    3. Mini Toothpaste. I can’t live without my favorite toothpaste, so mini I must. The drama!

    4. Mini DAMDAM Oil Cleanser (code cat15) or Cerave Makeup Wipes are a must.

    5. Mini Glowy Super Gel in Warmglow is a glow and bronzer in one. The original size is really big — this mini version is worth it.

Between weekend beach days (I officially got my base tan) and busy work days, I promised more on the delicious date nights from last week’s notes. If you’re in LA, consider all of these places to add to your date nights with your lovers and girls night out. Turns out, I’m a terrible Carrie Bradshaw type when it comes writing about dating in real time. I’ve become pretty private about the active, live dating experiences — but that’s mainly because I haven’t liked any of those guys (or vice versa lol). I could write a novel about the dates that went nowhere — the stories are truly iconic. I only write about a few of them after the fact, usually from a therapeutic POV.

I don’t fully know what’s possessing me to share with my 1,000+ subscribers that I met someone I like, but I think it’s because I want to celebrate it vs. hide it and live in a low-grade state of fear that it might disappear. I’m going to be judicious in what I share, but the sentiment is to love out loud, even when it’s scary.

Dating in my 30s has been a journey. I’ve had big loves. I’ve had gut wrenching heartbreaks. I thought I knew what I wanted, but every one of those loves and chapters taught me what I didn’t want and what I truly want. I’ve been wildly optimistic and patient about finding love again. I never complained about the apps or not finding my future husband at a party. I’m a hopeless romantic who has always, always believed that my time will come.

So, while this new crush/connection/lover is still very fresh and very tender, I’m throwing out the societal dating rulebook entirely — and I’m going to talk about dating him! I’m a grown ass adult who knows what I want, knows what a real, deep connection feels like, and whatever happens from here was always going to happen.

I’ll save more for next week’s post. More on the date nights, more on the fears, more on the late nights of dancing and pure joy, and of course, more on the realness of dating in your mid-late 30s and 40s.

For now… a gentle nudge to let go, be brave, love, and live life to its fullest, my lovers. Go on the date, take the leap, and don’t worry so much. Joy, happiness, and love is everywhere if we open ourselves to it 💫

I don’t mean to be cryptic, but so much has been happening in my personal world and I am learning to trust in timing and how life unfolds. I think they call it ‘surrendering.’

I was in a non-stop work grind until Friday night when I decided I needed to make time to celebrate what would have been my angel mama’s 67 birthday. Time and life paused and nothing else seemed to matter but the magical two hours I had with my bestie Marly. We had a perfect, cozy, simple night. We laughed, we cried, we ate, we drank. We held hands, we hugged, and we reminisced and dreamed about our futures. I drove home with a full heart… thanking my lucky stars for my friendships and the tears of sadness and gratitude just flowed. Grief is a wild thing.

Girlfriends are absolutely everything, and my mama loved my girlfriends more than anything. She’d always cook for us and send the girls home with work lunches for the next day. I’m so damn lucky that my best friends who knew and loved my mama help me keep her spirit alive. Marly brought a big bouquet of flowers for my mama, and if that’s not the most touching thing ever, I don’t know what is. I have the flowers in vases throughout my house now and I can feel my mama even more.

Like I said, it was an exhausting week for a number of reasons and to end a Friday night celebrating my sweet mama with my best friend was a gift. I know she’s watching over me — just as fiercely protective as she is encouraging me to live boldly.

Anyway, I’m lite on the links this week, because I haven’t had much time, but there’s still some good stuff down there. My brain isn’t functioning anymore and I desperately need to get off a screen. I hope you all have a beautiful week ahead and find little glimmers of joy wherever you may be 💫

1. A new Barefoot Dream lover. I never thought I’d be obsessed with a Barefoot Dreams blanket, but here I am and ready to die on this hill: it’s the coziest blanket of all time. I know it’s not a secret, but I was averse to it forever until I got my hands on one and… I’m forever changed. I got it in ‘Beach Glass’ and it’s such a soothing color. Who am I?!

2. My friend ’s first cookbook, Riviera, launches this week! If you know Mel, everything she touches turns to gold and her taste is unmatched. I love watching my friends soar above and beyond. I can’t wait for my copy to arrive!!

3. The Chan Luu Summer Collection launched! And it’s the best one yet IMO! I don’t even know where to begin, but this jacket is a showstopper, this outfit is a must, and new Techno Taffeta colors are here. And yes, that’s what I was doing over in the Canary Islands a couple weeks ago :)

   

4. Baby shower gifts 🩵 I try to stick to the registry, but I when there isn’t one, I always go for a pack of Coterie Diapers and this Honest Baby 3-pack onesies, wrapped in a cute basket and pretty bow.

In case you missed it 💌

I’ve been listening to this playlist all day. My body woke up naturally at 6am. I made my hot water and lemon and got back into bed for the rest of the morning. I made myself a hearty breakfast, then scrubbed my outdoor fountain clean. I watered my plants, I drank a cappuccino in my backyard in a big chair in the sun. My bff FaceTimed me from Hawaii and I took a long walk while talking on the phone with another bestie. I did my laundry and hung dry a few pieces. I spent a couple hours working in preparation for a few very busy weeks ahead. And yesterday, I went to the farmer’s market and stocked up my kitchen. I’ve cooked every meal and made every coffee at home. And I even brought a bed pillow (iykyk) to the couch for an afternoon nap.

I was invited to an art gallery opening, a Malibu beach day, and a house party this weekend. And instead of pushing through, I honestly told each friend that my social battery is completed depleted and I needed to recharge. Something I wouldn’t have done in the past.

My best friend reminded me: “No, but like, you just got back from Africa.” And it’s true. I went on a six day work trip to the Canary Islands and Paris. Ok the Canary Islands is technically a Spanish island, but to be fair, it’s off the coast of Africa. Point being, it was a looong journey with non-stop work in a short amount of days.

I pinch myself with how much I love my work. We shot the Chan Luu summer campaign and all I can say is… you better be paying attention this week :) The gratitude I have for all my career experiences are endless. I love looking back on every work chapter and nod in approval of my younger self. I really did all that. And I watch all my previous colleagues rise the ranks and seeing where they are now and makes me feel proud of how far we’ve all come.

Anyway, back to my ~*freedom*~… I described to a girlfriend recently how at peace with my day to day life I’ve been feeling. I hate to admit how traumatized my last big relationship left me. Little things like not being able to listen to my own music in our home or in my car when he was around. Not having a say in our schedule. And when I did speak up (which was always), I always forfeited my needs (that’s mostly on me). I think I’m still trying to believe that I can do whatever the fuck I want to do now.

I always wanted to be a grown up since I was a little girl. I couldn’t wait for my independence. And I think I’m finally where I wanted to be all those years ago. The last 20 years were a test run. Something about the last few months are making me believe it’s all actually real. I’ve never actually given myself the chance to be alone and to experience this sort of freedom. To embrace and to truly love this time in my life where I can focus on myself. I know it won’t be like this forever, so I’m savoring it.

This probably could have warranted a standalone piece, but don’t worry, there’s plenty more where this came from :) I’ll share more photos from Paris and the Canary Islands in my next post, because this one got a bit lengthy. So I leave you with a playlist I made when I first moved into my Pasadena bungalow, a year and a half ago when I first started to feel what I now know is freedom. It’s peaceful and homey and cozy. 7. A $29 foldable drying rack. I finally got a drying rack because I decided it was time to grow up and not ruin all my clothes.

8. Travel sized oil cleanser for $10. It’s either this or these $11 biodegradable makeup wipes.

So much so, that I genuinely haven’t had a chance to catch you guys up. I was in New York for 2 weeks in February, which is the last time I rambled, so let’s see what I can ramble about LA from the last month. Marvito is my favorite fun restaurant in LA right now — the margaritas are so damn good. Shaken, no ice in a martini glass. Tower Bar is still the best for a nice night and a big fat martini with your girlfriends and celeb sightings (this time was Brooklyn & Nicole sitting in a very public table, definitely to be seen 👀). Living Room is the hot spot with no shortage of attractive people — also sprinkled with celebrities, with my ex-boyfriend being one I didn’t need to run into, but that’s little ol LA for you. All Time is still my favorite for both brunch (Greek Salad with steak or the BOAT) and dinner (steak for 1 or fish with crispy rice and sweet potatoes). I went to SIX birthday dinners in one week, how do I know so many Aries?! I ran into a guy I dated at a party and his outfit was so… wrinkly. My gf and I couldn’t stop laughing. I’ve had two past lovers do the ol circle back this week… just like clockwork. I went on a date and he took me to Vidiots in Eagle Rock, which is the most east side thing, ever. I sat at a diner talking with a hottie until 5am about god knows what. The Pineapple, Prosciutto, Jalapena pizza from Triple Beam and their Veggie Chopped Salad is the best thing I ate in the last month, wowowow. I went to Silver Lake Lounge for the first time in years and smoked cigarettes with cuties and I think I hated it but maybe enjoyed it a little. That pretty much sums up the funny and yummy stuff 🫠

ANYWAY! I’m heading on a veryyyy exciting work trip at the end of the week and I pinch myself every day that I get to do what I love with the people I love. I’m going to bed tonight with all the gratitude in the world. I hope you’re all having a beautiful start to week and I’ll be back after my trip xoxo

1. A $10 clarifying shampoo that works wonders. My hair was screaming for a break from product and I got the CeraVe clarifying shampoo and am once again blown away by CeraVe products. I just ordered these $11 biodegradable makeup wipes for travel. They are so affordable and so good.

3. Long shorts are IN. I’ve worn these Chan Luu shorts more than any other piece of clothing in the last month and I always get complimented on them. And they’re comfortable. And they’re cool. That should be enough reasons!

4. My favorite pair of Alex Mill white pants are back! I wore these allll last summer and they are it. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and can be dressed up or down. I traveled with them and threw on a sneaker or heel. 10/10 recommend.

   

5. These Jimmy Choo sunnies! I love these three: the Benna, the Lou, and the Marais with blue lens.

6. The 5 Year Journal. I posted this on my IG a few weeks back and so many of you love this as much as I do. I got it as a gift for my birthday and it’s such a sweet and fun thing to do every day. I can’t wait to look back on my answers five years from now.

I accidentally spent 12 days in New York after getting snowed in. The trip started with hosting the Chan Luu FW26 Presentation at Flynn McGarry’s Cove. The energy of Fashion Week is FUN and I loved seeing all our NYC friends and had even more fun sharing all of Tessa’s latest designs with the world. Then we hosted a Lunar New Year dinner at the OG Mr. Chow on 57th Street where TT and I closed down the restaurant with two old men sending us a final night cap.

After a jam-packed work week, I somehow squeezed in gallery hopping at Pierre Augustine Rose and Magen H Gallery, two(!) dates, a girls night at Bemelman’s Bar, a blizzard frolic through Central Park, a visit to McNally Jackson’s Goods For The Study, two dinners at ’s King (as always and it was perfect both times), dinners at Omen, The Odeon, and 12 Chairs. Oh and Court Street Grocers, twice :)

I only lived in New York for four years and sometimes I wonder what it would’ve been like if I stayed longer. I adapt to the pace and lifestyle so quickly every time I return that it really does feel like home. I don’t wait for stop lights, I walk really fast, I surf on the subway. I was the only person not panicked when every flight on Sunday and Monday got cancelled from the blizzard because I was lucky enough to perch up at my bestie’s house on the Upper West Side and damn, I love it there. I was there for 7 nights and actually thought I was Kathleen Kelly by the end of it. Wandering through Central Park after the blizzard was one of those moments I’ll never forget. I couldn’t think about anything other than gratitude — it was that moving. If I ever move back, it’s a toss up between returning to Carroll Gardens or venturing uptown to the Upper West Side with Central Park as my backyard. Anyway, this is me completely daydreaming while also Redfin-ing Pasadena homes.

As soon as I landed in LA, work brought me straight into Art Week fun. Frieze was really lovely this year, I had a beautiful dinner at Carpenters, went on a couple gallery walks, stopped by VDL with Francis Gallery for the closing of John Zabawa’s show, had a girls night at Living Room, went to the farmer’s market and have pretty much exclusively been eating at home since New York. LA is such a bubble and this week really reminded me of the community I’ve built here. Running into friends at every one of these stops is so special.

And unsurprisingly, I am now sick in bed. It’s only March 2 and I’ve been to Amsterdam, Mexico City, and New York for photoshoots, fashion week, art week(s), and a birthday at home. My body is officially knocked out and I’m taking this a sign to stay put for a while. Sending you all the love from wherever you are in the world today xx

1. Streak Free Polish Cloth. I was at King and Altro Paradiso last week and saw the bartenders using these cloths, which reminded me to share with you guys. I’ve been using these for years to wipe down my wine glasses and stainless steel at home and it’s no surprise the best restaurant teams are using them too. 2 for $9 — you can’t beat it. I posted a video of it in use and you guys went feral over it!

   

2. New Chan Luu. The Spring 26 Ready to Wear collection has taken the Internet by storm and this is a bandwagon I highly suggest you jump on! PS. I wear a Size 1 in all Chan Luu!

   1. I wore this kaftan + Techno Taffeta Pants to multiple art week events in LA this week and got asked about it no less than 10x. I got stopped at Frieze 5x! The combo is the definition of ‘effortlessly chic’. I can’t wait to wear the kaftan and a bikini somewhere along the Mediterranean soon…

   2. This stunning coat will having people staring at you, in a good way. Our girl Mimi Ngyuen wore it last week and looked like an absolute vision! I wore it for a night out at Bemelman’s Bar and it was… perfect. Tell me it doesn’t remind you of the John Galliano Spring 1992 coat Margot Robbie just wore!!

      

   3. I wore the Techno Taffeta Collarless Coat in Black to our presentation with the Ultra Wide Leg Taffeta Trouser and it was the perfect simple and chic look.

   4. The OG Pinch Waist Cardigan has been in every cool girls rotation, and now there’s a Jacquard version. I wore this last week and got asked about it multiple times in a single crossing in the Hotel Chelsea lobby.

   5. This Crinkle Mesh top is so cool. Wore this with the Techno Taffeta Pants and a classic Jimmy Choo heel and once again, got stopped by the girlies for outfit details.

   6. Don’t sleep on the jewelry. Like the Horsebit Collection and the butterflies 🦋

   

3. New Sezane is too good. I just ordered this adorable cherry red collar dress, this perfectly tailored leather jacket, suede mules, and adorable embroidered mini skirt that I’m going to wear with this oversized tee I already have in my closet.

   1. Do not sleep on Sezane’s Home line. I’m a sucker for a ‘letter’ mug, I can’t help myself. This one is sooo cute, and makes a great gift.

4. The best underwear. My girlfriends and I rave about these and I just restocked on 12 more pairs because they’re only 6 for $30?!

   

5. The Dermstore sale is major. If you’re interested in trying some tried and true, affordable products + some higher end product, this is the time to buy. I would stock up on these:

   1. La Roche Posay: Toleriane Moisturizer ($25) and Cleanser ($19) and the Anthelios Sunscreen which I always buy when I’m in Europe.

   2. Dr. Dennis Gross Daily Peels — I always travel with this and use it the night after a flight!

   3. Augustinus Bader The Cream — I’ve been using this on and off for years and love it.

   4. Dr. Diamonds Metacine — If you’ve wanted to try, this sale is the time to buy. I’ve used all of their products to the last drop and was totally obsessed.

      

6. 3-minute Hair Mask. Ok this is life changing! My favorite part is that it’s only 3-minutes. My hair has been so soft and shiny after using this and my girlfriend told me I have mermaid hair (aka what a compliment!!). I’m obsessed and adding it to my Master Beauty List.

7. T3 Blow Dryer. The best part about staying with girlfriends is discovering new things! I didn’t pack my trusty Dyson blow dryer and was so impressed by this T3 one.

8. K18 Shampoo. Another new find staying at my girlfriend’s house. When I say I had the best hair ever last week.. I was blown away. No frizz and all volume (with the help of ROZ Lift Spray, obviously!)

   

9. Intimissi Turtleneck. I borrowed this from my girlfriend and I just ordered one for myself. It’s the perfect turtleneck that comes in allll the colors.

10. Negative Bras. Of all the bras I’ve owned, this is the one I wear the most under a t-shirt. The Whipped Collection really is that good. I know it’s an investment, but I have so many pieces. My absolute favorite combo is: the Henley + Mini Short… it’s sexy, cute, and comfy. What a combo?!

    

11. No more plastic wrap, please! Try these reusable bowl covers instead. Plastic wrap is one of the hardest plastics to break down… it can take hundreds of years. All for something we use once and toss. Switching to reusable food covers if one of the easiest things you can do 🌎🙏🏼♻️ Code CAT25 to make things even easier!

    

12. Compression packing cubes. I’ve been using these for years and they are excellent. The compression part is key. I use them for every single trip!

13. Cacao powder. I’ve been a Cap Beauty girl for a long time and this cacao powder is IT. I put a tsp in my morning cappuccino during my luteal phase and voila… a healthy mocha. It’s so damn good. , you are amazing!

    

14. A feel good drink. I’ve been drinking these Cann drinks at night every once in a while and damn, they are good. I’ve been texting all my friends about them. The Ginger Lemongrass flavor taste just like the original Ghia Spritz. CODE: CAT10

Rewind to celebrating my 36th birthday! Here’s a little IG recap. I also spent some significant time reflecting on major themes I took from 35 — it was a really big, beautiful year and I wanted to write it all down and share with the world. So here’s a birthday weekend recap and 35 lessons at 35!

Then, I bopped over to Amsterdam for a work trip and wow, have I been living under a rock? I’ve already started looking at real estate. Granted I didn’t see much, but I’m sold — the people, the charm, the design. It’s one of my favorite new cities I’ve visited in a while. Here’s the IG recap.

I just got home last night from a 48 hour girls trip to Mexico City. We danced, we laughed, we saw a sunrise, we made new friends, and it was the best reminder that going on quick girls trips are good for the soul!! I’m not a CDMX connoisseur so I won’t go into a hit-list, but I do need to go back for a quieter, chill visit — because my last two trips there were ~*wild*~

I’m heading to New York this weekend for work and I can’t wait to show you guys what we’re scheming up over at Chan Luu ;) We launched our Spring 26 Collection this morning and it’s gorgeous if I do say so myself!

And of course, I watched Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance as soon as I landed last night and WOW. What a JOYFUL, beautiful performance! You could feel the pride in every detail… and the way it made millions of people feel seen.. what a gift in a dark America. I LOVED Lady Gaga’s cameo too, wowowow. It was all simply incredible. I am so obsessed with him!!!!

1. My birthday outfit! Absolutely no surprise it’s from Chan Luu. It’s a dress that comes with a belt, but I wore it as a tunic with jeans and mostly unbuttoned.

6. An $18 serum that gives you glass skin. I’ve been using this Versed serum 3x a week for the last couple of weeks and I am blown away at how great it is. And for $18?! I’m adding it to my Master Beauty List.

7. A date top! This is a classic Doen top that be in your closet forever. I wore it on a date with blue jeans and heels. And someone asked, but I wore these nipple covers instead of a bra because it’s sheer.

   

8. Diamond Earrings. I’ve been wearing these Luv AJ cuties in my daily rotation and I just love them.

9. Baggy jeans so good I’ve been wearing them on flights. I was just introduced to EB Denim and I’ve been wearing this pair dressed up and down. I wore them on a 12 hour flight to Amsterdam and on my flight to and from Mexico City. And I wore them out with heels. They’re seriously so good!

   

10. My carry-on kit. I should really do a dedicated post on my can’t live without things on a flight. It’s short and sweet so here you go:

    1. Cuyana Travel Case. I have the duo set and I use the mini one in my purse to hold the following things!

    2. Necessaire Lip Balm. I don’t go anywhere without this, let alone a plane ride.

    3. Kiehl’s Hand Salve. Is there anything worse than dry hands after washing your hands at the airport / on the plane?! I’ve been using this hand cream for 15 years.

    4. Noshinku hand sanitizer in Eucalyptus. It’s super thin, so it fits in my little pouch and it smells great.

    5. Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. These for short flights and then the big guys for anything over 6 hours.

    6. Portable charger. My fear of a dead phone should be studied.

    7. Carry-on. I’m a tried and true Away girl. I use the Carry-On Flex and it’s perfect.

    

11. Biodance Face Masks. This is nothing new, but this really is the best face mask. I use one at least 1x a week. It doesn’t get all gooey and slipperly like some of them (you know?!) I put this on last night immediately after my everything shower post CDMX flight when my skin was dry AF.

12. Dr. Dennis Gross Peel Pads. A must for traveling because they don’t take up any space and your skin will thank you after a travel day. I’ve been using these for years!

    

13. A cashmere polo. This is so soft and cute, I’ve been wearing it to work and cozy enough to wear on my flight to Amsterdam.

14. A lace body suit and pashmina. I got this over the holidays but have been wearing it for nights out and I love the combo, or separately!

    

15. William Sonoma Oven Mitts. A reminder that if you think it’s time for a new pair of oven mitts, it probably is. These are $16 and so cute. Also, matching towels are the best kitchen towels ever.

16. Freezing things!! I have a hard time going through all my produce living alone, so I got really into freezing things. Berries and spinach for future smoothies are the obvious. But my bff brought me a ton of lemons from her tree, so I got small ice cube trays to squeeze lemon juice for my daily morning hot water and lemon. I also love these silicone trays for freezing soup and broth. Whenever you want to reheat a bowl, you just pop it out!

    

17. Every day socks, 3 for $13. I swear by Uniqlo socks and I tend to acquire them anytime I’m in a new country and randomly need a new pair of socks. I’be been wearing these white ones with my Vans or Sambas lately!

    

18. A chic toilet scrubber. There’s no cute way to say this, but this is in fact, the cutest option for a toilet bowl scrubber. I get a new one every few months to keep it fresh.

A quick Amsterdam recap ❄️

1. Rijsel. Not that I needed a reason to love Amsterdam more, but this restaurant sealed the deal. I don’t say this lightly — this made my top 10 restaurants in the world. It was (to me), perfect in every way. The ambiance, the menu, the food, the wine, the people.

2. Rika Studios. We stumbled on this shop on the canals, and it was our lucky day because the founder, Rika, was in the shop. We spent an hour talking with her, admiring her pieces. I highly recommend stopping by!

3. The Lebanese Sajeria. One of my favorite bites of food on the trip. We wanted something quick and easy and wow, this blew our minds. It was a simple wrap but hot damn it was so good!!!

4. Van Gogh Museum. We only had time to go to one museum and I’m so glad we got to see his work. The Sunflowers really took my breath away.

2. New Bathmats! I stand by the fact that the smallest upgrades make every day life so much more enjoyable. I finally upgraded to these Frontgate bathmats in the color Chiffon. How cute is the border!! I have the bath sheets, hand towels, and face towels in Chiffon too and I won’t shut up about how fluffy and perfect they are. I was introduced to these a few years ago and have never looked back.

3. Almond Cow. It’s a nut milk maker that I’ve used 1-2x a week for the last two years. I truly have not bought milk from a store since.

In case you missed it

I had a really beautiful birthday celebration this year and I’m still basking in gratitude for the love from my family and friends. The last six years have been a goddamn roller coaster. My mama passed away eight days after I turned 30 and it felt like an uphill battle for a long time after that. The last few birthdays were pretty weird, to be honest, so I’m going to take the W on a really great few days of celebrating this year!

I hadn’t felt this giddy for a birthday is a long time. I also hadn’t hosted much at my new-ish house and what do ya know… it brought me so much joy to have all my girlfriends under one roof. All I wanted was something simple at my house, a place that’s become my cocoon for the last year and a half. It was effortless, easy, and we drank way too many spritzes and wine. It was so me. And on my actual birthday, I spent a perfect 75 degree day in Malibu with my ride or dies drinking more spritzes, laughing our asses off, singing at the top of our lungs in the car with the windows down while also hollering at hot men down PCH. Capped it off with an impromptu walk-in at RVR with ‘just one glass’ of wine which turned into a lot more than that. Ugh, it was just all so fun!!!

I had every intention to post this on my actual birthday, but I haven’t had a moment to put pen to paper. I spent my first week of 36 in Amsterdam on a magical and inspiring work trip, and otherwise, have been pretty heads down with some big work projects. But here we are!

Before I get to my big 35 lessons… I’ll start off with my mantra for 36: What’s meant for me will not miss me. I’m deep in my ~*trust in the universe*~ phase and good things keep happening. So... I am rolling with it. Hello 36!! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for me!!

35 LESSONS

1. Choosing JOY is the key to life! Key word is choose. I didn’t understand that I could actively choose joy until I went to the Hoffman Process. What a simple concept, right? Turns out it wasn’t so simple for me. This means I can choose the way I live my life — and it turns out that living it from a heart full of joy is a daily, hourly, minute by minute choice.

2. Prioritize FUN! I’m a work hard, play hard kind of girl. If you catch me in the work zone, I’m 110% locked in. But when I’m not working, having fun with whatever it is I’m doing is so important. Maybe some of you can relate, but I didn’t have the most ‘playful’ childhood and I was actually quite serious, so I’ve had to do a lot of work to rewire that part of my system and learn how to channel my inner child to let go and truly have fun (once again, thank you Hoffman Process). Belly laughs and being silly and playful is a must for the rest of my life.

   

3. Nourish your friendships like your life depends on it. We need to tak turns taking care of each other. 34 was an absolute shit show for me, and 35 was all about pouring back into my friends. I truly don’t know what I’d do without my girlfriends.

4. I settled into the friendship / motherhood dynamic transition. I’ll be honest, I had a hard time during the first couple of years as my bffs became first time moms. I felt like I had lost them to their babies. I don’t think we talk enough about how difficult that transition is for female friendships, but now that I’ve gotten to the other side, watching my friends be parents and being Auntie Kitty is the most beautiful thing in the world.

   

5. Spending time with friends and making new friends who are in similar life stages was big for me this year. In the aforementioned dynamic transition, it’s healthy to keep living my life and be in the same orbit as other women in the same life phase. To be clear, it’s not about replacing friends. It’s simply expansion.

6. Romanticizing and cherishing this period before I (hopefully) have my own children one day. Working hard, adventuring more, a quiet house, sleeping in, staying out all night, doing nothing… and (trying) not to feel guilty about any of it.

   

7. It’s important to have a few nights a year to party my pants off. I’m talking dance all night, laughing my ass off with gfs, watch the sun come up and stay in bed the entire next day without feeling bad for it. I had a handful of these nights this year and damn, I have the most fun girlfriends in the world.

8. But staying in on a Friday or Saturday night and waking up early on a Saturday or Sunday is equally as incredible.

9. Working is a privilege. Having job(s) that I love makes me feel so beyond lucky.

   

10. Learning to be alone is an active lesson for me. This is the longest I’ve been “single” and whaddya know… it’s been one of my favorite years yet. I’m learning how to actually enjoy my own company. I used to stay busy every night of the week during my short single stints, because I hated being alone, but I finally understand that solitude doesn’t mean emptiness.

11. I learned how to navigate anxiety of being alone in a healthier way. Staying home when I’m feeling lonely and telling myself to “just be alone” isn’t always the answer. It’s understanding that I need healthy connection, like a hug from my best friend.

    

12. Time is the greatest gift. I really, I mean really, got to reflect on my past relationships because I wasn’t distracted with a new one this year. I needed proper time to be alone and heal. I’m so thankful for their lessons and I’m even more thankful those relationships ended when they did. I know this for certain: every relationship that ends is a blessing in disguise. Sometimes we just need some time to pass until we realize that truth.

13. Dating was eye opening this year. I went on a record number of first, second, and third dates and it was clear to me that none of them were a fit. This is vulnerable to admit, but I probably would’ve settled for a mismatch in the years before this.

    

14. Emotional vagueness doesn’t work for me anymore. If it’s not clear, honest communication… no thank you. The right love stands with you and keeps you next to them in every sense (wise words from my lover).

15. Despite the 100 dates I went on, I did date one incredible man this year that set the bar really, very, quite high — and I am so thankful for him. He got not only one, but two, pieces written about our time together.

16. Compatibility is a lot harder to come across than advertised.

    

17. Doing “the work” is really, really rewarding. I grew a lot in the last 1.5 years and I am so grateful for therapy, conversations with friends, and alone time.

18. Journaling became one of my most powerful tools this year. The simple act of writing out my feelings helped me through so many tough moments this year… wow.

19. Same with exercise. Hot yoga became my safe place. Long walks became therapeutic. Cardio to move stagnant energy. The body keeps score…

    

20. Not looking at my phone for the first hour of the day is life changing. I did it last March when I was processing something difficult and it got me through that time. I would journal first thing and I couldn’t believe how much noise was in my head upon waking up. The subconscious is so powerful. Reminder to do this again.

21. Taking time to respond is always the right decision.

22. There’s no need to over explain or justify a decision. A no can simply be a “no thank you!” or “I can’t!”

    

23. The beauty of vulnerability. I’ve opened up about a couple of daunting fears to my best friends this year and it’s like 1,000 pounds lifted off my shoulders. We don’t have to carry burdens alone… We’re never as alone as we think we are.

24. I attempted to eat out less and I think generally succeeded. I couldn’t be happier cooking a simple meal at home.

25. Mastered the art of cooking for one. Like buying a ribeye from the butcher and cutting it in half to cook because leftover steak is never good.

    

26. Packing a lunch for office days or packing up a cooler for days in my car is the best. I hate buying lunch out — it’s expensive, not that good, and they give you too much food imo, so then I over eat.

27. Say yes to attending weddings! Especially in different countries and/or going solo. I made two of my closest friends at destination weddings this year and I shudder to think how different my life would be if I didn’t go.

    

28. Community doesn’t happen by accident… you have to tend it. Friendships require intention, especially if you live alone or work for yourself. That means carving out time that isn’t behind a screen, saying yes to plans, and choosing to show up.

29. Hmm how do I say this one without sounding like I’ve lived in LA for a decade? It really is a glow / energy you put out that makes people drawn towards you… and vice versa. I know when something feels right: conversations flow, I leave lighter after spending time with someone. Energy is ~real~

    

30. Rushing to get somewhere or to finish something is never a good idea.

31. I deeply value consistency from others. Follow through and presence. My body knows the difference between reassurance and reality now.

32. Not over sharing. Keeping things close to the chest doesn’t necessarily mean you’re hiding… it’s actually just listening to my intuition.

    

33. Human design is fascinating. I did a reading right before I turned 35 but it’s helped me understand how I operate and my decision styles in business, friendships, and love.

34. Sometimes you just need to go to sleep and start over again tomorrow.

35. We can’t see around corners. Thanks to my girlfriend for sharing this one with me. We never know what’s coming our way. Jesus take the wheel, baby!!

Now that I’m actively tracking my notes from the week, I’m shocked at how many recommendations, conversations, and general things are passed through the short time and space of seven days.

It’s been such a lovely, peaceful start to the new year in LA with some serious Capricorn energy pulsing through my veins. It’s been all about work and finances and setting the rhythm for the year (and my life) and I feel damn proud. Next up is a birthday celebration, then a work trip to Amsterdam and shortly after that, more work in New York! Life is good.

1. New Bathmats! I stand by the fact that the smallest upgrades make every day life so much more enjoyable. I finally upgraded to these Frontgate bathmats in the color Chiffon. How cute is the border!! I have the bath sheets, hand towels, and face towels in Chiffon too and I won’t shut up about how fluffy and perfect they are. I was introduced to these a few years ago and have never looked back.

2. Good Hang with Amy Poehler. This is a perfect podcast. It’s light, fun, and funny. Amy’s voice is so soothing. I’ve been listening to it while I cook dinner and it’s like listening to friends. The episodes with GP and Ina Garten are my favorites so far.

   

3. My WFH Office Set Up. I was shocked at how many people clicked through to see what’s in my office. The $12 mouse pad is my high-low for to accompany my Apple mouse and keyboard. 4. A new runner for my hallway. It’s sooo soft and cozy, and most importantly, affordable. And I just checked, it’s on sale! I love it so much. Code: catchen15

5. People We Meet on Vacation. God I love an easy to watch rom com. First of all, Tom Blythe is so hot and Emily Bader is so pretty. I attempted to read the book last year and didn’t get through it, so I was surprised at how much I loved the movie. and I were texting during the movie obsessing over the whole thing. As someone who doesn’t own a TV and doesn’t watch that many shows or movies, I’ve been addicted again between this and Heated Rivalry. Highly recommend!

   

6. A red cashmere cardigan. Lunar New Year is quickly approaching and red is obviously the lucky color to wear. Do I need to do a roundup of some of the best red clothing right now?

7. Knife Sharpener and Knife Set. I finally sharpened my knives this week and wow, I need to do this more often. And apparently you all do, because a lot of you clicked on the link this week! Ps. I use the Material Trio Knife Set in Cool Beige and Black. Code: catmaterial

   

8. Uniqlo Heat Tech. I’m going to Amsterdam next week!! It’s my first time and I’m so damn excited. I get so giddy going to a new country. It’s obviously freezing there and I’m thankful I have so much Uniqlo Heat Tech from when I lived in New York ten years ago. Yes, it still holds up and I still wear the same pieces!

9. Thin Cotton Trouser Socks. Wearing thin socks with loafers extend the shelf life of your heel 10x. I’ve had these J.Crew socks for 4 years now and they’re still holding up.

   

10. Kristin Fontana Astrology. My bestie Tracey introduced me to this astrologist and I look forward to her weekly readings. This week’s reading for my sun in Capricorn was so spot on I got the chills and can’t stop thinking about it. More on this soon…

11. Reduce, reuse, recycle. A reminder to bring back your containers or egg cartons to the farmers market each week! Vendors will gladly reuse. I forget that the saying goes: reduce, reuse then we recycle. What else can you reuse this week?

    

12. Baby Foot. Yes you read that right. I texted this to a friend who wanted a solution for dry, cracked heels. THIS IS IT, I promise you. Alyssa and I swear by this and yes, we will send each other photos of our peeling feet. You basically have a new foot after five days. Slightly gross, but 100% amazing. Also, winter is the best time to do this because we’re mostly wearing socks and boots.

14. Hot Yoga. I’ve been slowly getting back into a workout routine and my body has been craving hot yoga lately. This year, I’m really focused on leaning into how I’m feeling with my cycle and the seasons. I shared the best hot yoga towel on my IG this week, so sharing it here too.

    

15. Almond Cow. It’s a nut milk maker that I’ve used 1-2x a week for the last two years. I truly have not bought milk from a store since.

16. De'Longhi La Specialista. To be clear, I am so far from a coffee connoisseur. I’ve been told the all-in-one machines aren’t ‘the best,’ but I am very happy with this purchase from six years ago.

I’ve had my eyes set on leveling up this Substack for a while now. And considering a year ago today, I was evacuated from my house from the Altadena fire wondering if my house would burn to the ground… this year is off to a way better start.

To that point, I’ve realized how much of my life lives in fragments. Screenshots, saved links, voice notes, texts sent to the group chat. If I don’t write it down on a notepad or my Notes app, it didn’t happen.

Notes from the Week is where I’m keeping track of the everyday things and thoughts that make up a week: links I sent to friends, recipes I actually cooked, what I’m reading, wearing, and recommending. 1. A pretty rummikub set. Let’s be real — the original set is ugly. This one is much more appealing to the eye. Also, if you haven’t gotten into this game yet… what are you waiting for?!

2. Heart the Lover by Lily King. I loved this book and finished it in two days. It’s a story about love through different chapters of life and how love can linger. The ending wrecked me. It was such a beautiful read.

3. I convinced my bff to get a Kindle. It’s so nice to read on a plane or in bed without the lights on. It’s light and easy to travel with. And the Kindle prices for books are significantly cheaper. That said, there are certain books I prefer to get in physical form. It’s just a ~feeling~ I guess :) I just went to Vroman’s in Pasadena the other days and spent an hour wandering the aisles. It’s heaven.

   

4. A knock box for your espresso machine. I was making an espresso and my bestie’s house and she didn’t have one, which made me realize how useful this is! PS. I’ve had the De’Longhi La Specialista for five years and love it.

5. These espresso cups. I bought these for my best friend and another best friend’s mama for Christmas and they were such a hit.

   

6. The easiest and most delicious roasted chicken recipe. It’s 3 ingredients: a chicken, olive oil, salt. This recipe really goes to show that simple is best. I should start a series on cooking for one, because I’m really mastering it. This lasts me an entire week and it’s versatile. I use the carcass to make broth — just add water, whatever scraps you have (celery, herbs, lemon, onion peels, whatever) and simmer for hours. I let mine go overnight so it’s upwards of 12-16 hours. Then, I freeze half of it in these incredible silicone trays. Then I put the carcass and scraps into my Mill Food Recylcer — yes, the bones too! — and it’s a zero waste meal. Pretty incredible, right?! Thanks to my dear friend Hayley for this recipe. And my friend also agrees that roasting a chicken is life-changing.

   

7. Ottolenghi’s Roasted Eggplant with anchovy and oregano is so damn good. I helped my girlfriend Anna make this on NYE and it was so easy and delicious. Ps. all of Ottolenghi’s cookbooks are my favorite.

8. The LL Bean Tote. As basic as it is, I really do use the LL Bean Tote a lot. I have the Medium, which is the perfect size to fit my lunch and liquids to the office.

   

9. The wet vac + vacuum combo. No matter how many times I post this wet vac on my Instagram, it gets the most clicks and someone’s buying it. It also prompted me to share the best vacuum (Miele, obviously) again. Wet vac for hardwood floors, Miele vacuum for rug / carpet. No better combo.

10. Winter skin must haves:

    1. Saie’s Super Glowy Gel in Warmglow gives you an instant warmth and glow on your face.

    2. OSEA’s Body Oil + Body Butter and/or Body Lotion combo is what I swear by in the dry winter months (and the post-beach summer months too). Code: catchen10 :)

    3. Cosrx snail mucin sheet masks 2x a week in the winter is a must.

    

11. Nail polish of the week: The Celisse Sheer Quickcoat in Vanity is the perfect nude. I had it on for 10 days before a chip! And the top coat might be one of the best I’ve tried since Seche Vite — IYKYK! I just added both of these to my Master Beauty List, by the way!

12. Great turtlenecks. I lived in this Guest in Residence cashmere turtleneck all week (and all winter) and it’s currently on sale! Then rotated in this Christy Dawn cherry red turtleneck that’s sadly sold out, but all their sweaters are incredible.

    

13. Loafers. I’ll admit I don’t wear them often, but when I do, they are the best of quality because you really can’t be walking around in shitty leather. This week was my tried and true Penny Loafer in Oxblood by Jamie Haller and my Aime Leon Dore loafers — both of which I’ve had since 2021. I really thought I was the baddest bitch on the block when I got those baby blue ALD loafers… they are still cute though!

14. RŌZ Root Lift Spray. I ran out of it a couple weeks back and finally got a new bottle and wow, I can really tell the difference without it. Thank god for the restock. (code: cat15)

    

15. It’s humidifer season. My mom was so good about having a humidifier in our house growing up and I just pulled mine out of the garage a few weeks ago. It’s such a game changer to combat dryness.

16. This $12 stainless steel vase. It’s actually a mint julep cup, but I saw post this once and I was easily sold. The steel with roses makes me so happy.

    

17. It’s fireplace season. If you didn’t see what I bought myself for Christmas, it was a delivery of 1/2 a cord of almond wood for my fireplace. I swear by these natural firestarters. I am not a duraflame girl. PS. If you live in Pasadena or are in East Los Angeles, call my buddies at Alpine Firewood for firewood delivery, or swing by to pick up a wheel barrow of great firewood. I can never get the bundles from Whole Foods again.

18. Butterfly clips and a kids apron. Two adorable gifts I recently got for my little besties.

19. To-go containers for traveling. I just texted this to my bestie. I got these so I can bring my own food on the airplane and toss afterwards. They don’t leak and are the perfect size. I also use these chefs containers at home and for travel!
