towns. The big Wayzata and Excelsior events come later in September: James J. Hill Days is September 11–13, the Real Runabouts Rendezvous is September 11–13, and Excelsior Apple Days is September 18–20.

🌊 Lake Minnetonka Labor Day Weekend — Sept. 4–7, 2026

⭐ The best bets for a true locals’ weekend

🎸 Friday, September 4

1. Excelsior Brewing — Paws + Pints

Excelsior Brewing Company

4.2

•Brewery•Open

Website•Directions•(952) 474-7837

Noon–4 p.m.

A particularly good way to start the weekend if you’re looking for something that feels local rather than touristy: Paws + Pints Happy Hour, with $2-off pints and free pup cups.

Then stay in Excelsior for:

Ozzy Harris — 7–10 p.m.

The listing describes the show as classic rock, Americana, blues and acoustic favorites.

Locals’ move: downtown Excelsior → brewery → dinner → live music, rather than fighting the crowds at a big Twin Cities event.

2. Lord Fletcher’s — Mike Bustin

Lord Fletcher’s Old Lake Lodge

3.2

•American restaurant•Open

Reserve•Website•Directions

6–9 p.m.

Lord Fletcher’s is one of the better places to capture the classic Lake Minnetonka Labor Day atmosphere: boats, docks, outdoor seating and live music. The Sept. 4 listing has Mike Bustin, 6–9 p.m.

This is particularly good for a sunset dinner followed by music.

3. Birch’s on the Lake — Bjorn Briel

Birch’s on the Lake Brewhouse & Supperclub

3.5

•American restaurant•Open

Reserve•Website•Directions

7:30–10:30 p.m.

Friday Night Acoustic with Bjorn Briel — singer/songwriter/pianist in the Brewhouse, no cover.

This is one of the better choices if you want music without turning the night into a loud bar crawl.

4. The Narrows — Ragtown

The Narrows Saloon

3.5

•Restaurant•Open

Website•Directions•(952) 471-3352

8–11:30 p.m.

This is probably my No. 1 Friday-night locals’ bar pick.

Ragtown is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, followed by Craig Clark Band Saturday. The Narrows describes itself as a casual Lake Minnetonka bar/restaurant with a particularly active Friday/Saturday music scene.

It’s exactly the sort of lesser-known neighborhood pub you were asking for.

5. Wayzata Legion — Karaoke

8–11 p.m.

Tonka Insider lists the Wayzata Legion’s weekly Friday karaoke from 8–11.

This is the anti-Wayzata-glamour choice: inexpensive, informal and much more neighborhood-bar oriented.

🌽 Saturday, September 5

6. Gale Woods Farm — Saturday Morning on the Farm

Gale Woods Farm

This is one of my top family recommendations.

Three Rivers’ current programming lists Saturday, September 5: Saturday Morning on the Farm.

The program is built around hands-on seasonal farm activities that can include collecting eggs, feeding sheep, kitchen activities and other farm chores.

Best use: make this the Saturday-morning anchor, then head toward Minnetrista/Excelsior for lunch.

7. Minnetrista Farmers Market

Be careful with this one: a search result initially looked like a local Minnetrista event, but the actual Minnetrista Museum & Gardens website is in Muncie, Indiana, not Minnetrista, Minnesota. I therefore would not count that farmers market as a Lake Minnetonka event.

Better local-market strategy

For this particular weekend, I could not verify a major official farmers market in the exact communities you specified with sufficient confidence. The Mound Farmers’ Market & More does have a Sept. 5 listing, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m., and is worth putting on the tentative/local list.

I’d check its social page before driving over because that listing is hosted through Facebook rather than a municipal calendar.

🍺 Saturday afternoon → evening

8. It featured more than 150 artists, live music, food and family programming.

No James J. Hill Days yet

Wayzata’s big three-day festival is the following weekend, September 11–13.

No Excelsior Apple Days yet

Apple Days is September 18–20.

No Real Runabouts this weekend

The 50th Real Runabouts Rendezvous at Lord Fletcher’s is September 11–13, not Sept. 4–7.

So if you’re specifically hunting for a big outdoor art festival, boat festival or community celebration, I’d actually recommend not trying to force one into Labor Day weekend. This weekend is better for lake recreation, small live-music venues, pubs, food and family activities.

🎷 Jazz / open mic / unusual entertainment

Excelsior Brewing Open Jam

This is worth flagging because you specifically requested open-mic/jam nights.

Excelsior Brewing has a recurring Wednesday Night Open Jam, 6–10 p.m.

Unfortunately, that’s Wednesday, Sept. 2, rather than Labor Day weekend.

Hopkins Depot Open Mic

The Depot Coffee House in Hopkins has an all-ages open mic, first Thursdays, 7–9 p.m.; the September date was Thursday, Sept. 3, immediately before the weekend. Performances are family-friendly.

So if you’re willing to start your long weekend one night early, this is a very good locals’ add-on.

Jazz

I found a Brilliant Colors Jazz Trio patio performance at CoV Wayzata on Thursday, Sept. 3, 5–8:30 p.m., rather than during Sept. 4–7.

That’s another excellent “start Labor Day weekend Thursday” possibility.

🕵️ Speakeasy-style / hidden-bar night

There isn’t a clearly documented speakeasy-style bar inside the specific west-lake communities that I would confidently label as such for this weekend.

If you’re willing to stretch the geography into Minneapolis, Volstead’s Emporium is the obvious speakeasy-style choice, with a Prohibition-era atmosphere and frequent jazz/live entertainment. Volstead’s Emporium Uptown

But for your requested Lake Minnetonka locals-only plan, I’d favor the opposite: Narrows + Wayzata Legion + Excelsior Brewing. They have much more of the genuine neighborhood-bar feel.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Best family activities

Strongest picks

1. Instead, it has something arguably better for a local: small bands, neighborhood bars, brewery nights, ice cream, beaches, trails, farm activities, boats and lakefront patios. The major festivals intentionally bookend the holiday — James J. Hill Days the following weekend and Apple Days later in September.

Thanks for reading Lake Minnetonka Odds & Ends! Recent reports indicate bass and northern pike remain the most consistent targets, while cooler water should increasingly improve muskie activity and begin moving pike and other fish toward shallower structure.

🎯 Largemouth Bass — Very Good

Bass are still the best overall bet. Recent guide reports have found them concentrated around 12–20 feet of water along outside weedlines, with abundant minnows and sunfish providing plenty of forage.

Best approach this week:

Jigworms and plastic worms worked slowly through the weeds

Ned rigs

Texas-rigged plastics

Fish the outside weed edge in roughly 12–20 feet

On bright, calm days, check docks and shaded shoreline cover

A particularly good tactic is to let the plastic sit on the bottom for several seconds, then give it a couple of subtle hops before letting it sit again. Recent reports have produced bass including fish around 21 inches and nearly 6 pounds.

🐊 Northern Pike — Good to Very Good

Pike continue to provide a reliable bite. Recent anglers have been catching them while trolling the deeper weedlines, particularly in 14–22 feet. Bluegill-colored deep-diving crankbaits have been productive.

The coming week could be a turning point. With nighttime temperatures dipping into the 50s and water temperatures beginning to fall, expect some pike to gradually move shallower.

Try: deep-diving crankbaits along weed edges, then switch toward spinnerbaits in shallow weed beds as the water cools.

🐺 Muskies — Improving

This is the species I’d watch most closely as we approach September. Recent reports say the water has begun cooling and muskie activity is increasing, with topwaters and bucktails producing fish.

The coming week should offer increasingly favorable conditions, particularly after windy or cloudy weather. Concentrate on:

Weed edges

Points

Current areas

Shallow weed flats adjacent to deeper water

Minnesota’s statewide muskie minimum for keeping a fish is 54 inches, so most anglers should plan on catch-and-release.

🐟 Walleye — Fair, Improving

Walleye are being caught as part of the mixed bag, although they aren’t currently as consistent as bass or pike. Recent Lake Minnetonka reports have included walleyes mixed in with pike and bass.

The best opportunity should come during low-light periods—early morning, evening and after dark. As the lake cools, look for walleyes to become more active and move shallower.

🐠 Panfish — Fair to Good

There is a tremendous amount of forage in the lake right now. Recent observations have shown schools of minnows being chased by sunfish, with loons also feeding heavily on the same bait.

Bluegills and crappies should be available around weed growth and structure. A small jig or Ned-style presentation can produce a mixed bag.

🌡️ The Big Story: Cooling Water

The weather pattern is favorable for the beginning of the fall transition. The current forecast calls for highs around 80–82°F Wednesday through Saturday, followed by another warm-up Sunday, with nighttime temperatures dropping into the upper 50s and 60s.

That means the fishing may change noticeably over the next week. Don’t abandon the deep weedline yet, but start checking shallow weeds, points and flats—particularly following cool nights.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" during the day, then becoming easterly and lighter Wednesday night. Thursday trends toward light winds.

Note: Lake Minnetonka does not have the same official NOAA marine-zone forecast format used for the Great Lakes. The wave heights above are a boating-oriented estimate based on the forecast wind, not an official NWS wave-height forecast.

🚤 72-Hour Boating Conditions

Wednesday: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ GOOD
Cooler morning with northeast winds around 8–10 knots. Expect some light chop, particularly on more exposed portions of the main lake. Conditions should be comfortable for most boats, although smaller craft will notice the breeze.

Thursday: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ EXCELLENT
The lightest winds of the period. Winds generally 4 knots or less at times should produce very calm water—excellent conditions for cruising, fishing, pontoons and paddlecraft.

Friday: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ GOOD to VERY GOOD
Warm weather and generally light winds make for favorable boating conditions. Because Friday is farther out in the forecast period, check the morning update for thunderstorms or a wind shift before heading out.

🛥️ Overall 72-hour boating outlook

Best day: Thursday, August 27.
The combination of light winds and mostly sunny weather should produce the calmest water of the three-day period.

For Wednesday morning, the 8–10-knot northeast wind is the main boating consideration. A launch such as Lake Minnetonka Gray’s Bay Boat Ramp or Lake Minnetonka Regional Park Boat Launch can provide convenient access, while exposed main-lake waters are likely to be somewhat choppier than protected bays.

5:00 AM boating call: GO — with light chop Wednesday morning; excellent conditions developing Thursday.

Thanks for reading Lake Minnetonka Odds & Ends!
