• Gordon Solie and Ole Anderson open the show. They talk about an unfortunate incident with Bob Armstrong. The Masked Mr. R is giving trouble to Ted Dibiase. Ron Garvin has the money for Jake Roberts this week.

• Brad Armstrong vs. Roger Bond. Squash. Brad interview. Bob has crushed cheekbones. He vows revenge on Dibiase.

• Paul Ellering interview. He wants the money but Garvin has $31K. Ellering says no and gives him one more week. Bumps it up to $37.5K.

• Johnny Rich interview. We see Omni clips of his good friend Mr. R (Tommy) attacking Ted.

• TV Champion Jake Roberts vs. Terry Ellis. Squash. We want Garvin chants.

• Ted Dibiase is upset. He smells a rat. It’s Tommy Rich. Ted is growing out his beard. He’s gonna take Mr. R’s mask and head off! Good promo.

• Jake Roberts interview. He’s hyping tonight in Huntington. He wore black for Garvin. Taking it all. DDT is going on tour.

• Road Warriors vs. Paul Garner and Mark Hill. Squash.

• National Champion Ted Dibiase vs. Randy Barber. Squash. Ole holds Brad back and Mr. R attacks!! Big pop.

• Paul Ellering interview. He’s taking the Legion Of Doom to new heights.

• We see Omni clips of Stan Hansen cleaning house on the Road Warriors with a 2x4.

• Stan Hansen taped promo. The blood is pumping through his veins. Calls the 2x4 his Texas toothpick. He doesn’t need it for the Warriors.

• The Spoiler vs. Mike Starbuck. The newest person for Ellering to manage. Spoiler does lots of interesting rope walk offense.

• Brett Sawyer vs. Mike Starbuck. Squash

• King Kong Bundy squash.

• Solie and Ole put over Greg Gagne and the AWA. They show clips of a Gagne squash win. He’s one half of the High Flyers. Ole put over all the names like coming in including Nick Bockwinkel. We see clips of Ronnie Garvin beating up Iron Sheik, Jerry Lawler beating up Hulk Hogan, Buzz beating up Tony Atlas, and Larry Zbyszko beating up Paul Orndorff. Ole explains how their smaller guys can beat up bigger guys. A fascinating segment with Ole firing back big time at Vince.

Ole says if Tommy does something outside the letter of the law, he might get Dibiase. They’re teasing Rich is going to jump Ted on tour. Ole hypes up all talent here today.

• Bob & Brad Armstrong vs. Chick Donovan & Roger Bond. Big cheers for The Armstrongs being back in town. A showcase win for them.

• Ted Dibiase vs. Johnny Rich. A pier six brawl with Johnny getting revenge! Johnny is really good again. Ted is frustrated but works his way to control. A real match here. Rich has great punches. Ted uses his experience and wins. A very good TV match.

• Hyping Jan 15 Omni with Buzz Sawyer vs. Jos Leduc, Ted Dibiase vs. Bob Armstrong, and Jake Roberts vs Jerry Lawler!

• Buzz Sawyer interview. He’s coming to Marietta for Dibiase.

• Jimmy Valiant vs. Paul Garner. Squash. Jimmy has no beard! His music is going and he wins in 24 seconds.

• NWA World Champion Ric Flair arrives. There’s a lot happening. He likes to meet the best head on. Come downtown to try and beat the man. He puts over Solie in a nice moment.

• Ole thinks Ellering is behind bringing Jos LeDuc in. They show film of his strongman feats like pulling a bus. We cut to a tape promo on Buzz. Wonders if Buzz has ever been bit? Great character and promo.

Paul says a rematch with The Sawyers is in the making. Jake tells Ron Garvin to sell his house. If he wants the shot, he has to put the money up.

• King Kong Bundy interview. Talks about his $15K challenge.

• Ted Dibiase interview. He’s not afraid of Rich.

Sat. Jan. 14 World Championship Wrestling

• Gordon Solie and Ole Anderson talk about Ted Dibiase injuring Bob Armstrong’s face. Ron Garvin has another week to get the money for a match with Jake Roberts.

• Paul Ellering interview. $35K is what it will take Garvin to wrestle Jake. He’s brought Jos LeDuc in to take out Buzz Sawyer. All Jos understands is fighting. LOD will reign forever. Show again Warriors against Hansen and Bugsy from The Omni on Christmas. Next he’s brought the world traveled Spoiler in today.

• The Spoiler vs. Mark Hill. Squash. Solie talks about Spoiler’s ominous reputation. Goes quick to the rope walk. He really holds the head in place for his rope offense.

• Ted DiBiase interview. It won’t be Bob in The Omni. Tommy and Johnny Rich are gone. Brad coming for revenge. Thinks he’s stupid for facing him.

• National Champion Ted DiBiase vs. Mike Jackson. Ted really picks Jackson apart. Good squash. Pulls him up and Johnny Rich comes in to help. Ted is a step ahead and takes him out too. Really putting Ted over strong.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Mike Starbuck. Solie mentions he’s just talking to sportscaster Craig Sager. Buzz squash.

• King Kong Bundy interview.15K bodyslam challenge. Gotta be a man who can slam him.

• Television Champion Jake Roberts interview. Any time for any one else than Garvin.

• NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. Zane Smith. All offense Flair squash.

• The Spoiler interview. Number one in action. Paid big money to come in here and soon they’ll pay bigger money to get rid of him.

• Paul Ellering interview. Solie runs down all of Ellering’s affiliations. If you’re an Ellering fan, this time period is for you. Take a look at LeDuc’s feats of strength and a promo on the Mad Dog. Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee music video. Hyping Lawler up to come face Jake. Buzz comes out and runs off Ellering.

• NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Les Thornton vs. Mike Jackson. Flair joins Solie on commentary. He’s the best conditioned champion of all time and he has sixty minutes to show it every night. Competitive match here. Les wins.

• Ted DiBiase interview. He’s kept all of his promises. Tells Johnny Rich he just needs himself to get the job done.

1. 5STAR Grand Prix 2025 Semi Final: AZM vs. Rina (Aug. 23, 2025 Stardom 5STAR Grand Prix 2025 - Night 13). The popular charismatic new sensation Rina attempts to overcome the dynamic AZM with a spot in the final on the line. Great intensity throughout.

2. ROH World Tag Team Title Match El Sky Team (Mascara Dorada & Mistico) (c) vs. Los Hermanos Chavez (Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja) (Jul. 10, 2026 CMLL Viernes Espectacular). The Chavez brothers donned masks and spotlight Sky Team in this Arena Mexico main event with ROH commentary.

3. Double Dog Collar Chain Tag Team Match The Nasty Boys vs. The Public Enemy (Jul. 7, 1996 WCW Bash At The Beach 1996). WCW was a promotion in transition here and it almost feels strange that this occurred on the same show as the nWo formation. The bar for dog collar matches has been raised a ton and this isn’t one of those but I still enjoyed it as a Nastys brawl. Maybe their last good one? I spent much of it envisioning a Nastys ECW run.

4. TNA International Title Match Mustafa Ali (c) vs. Erin Ordo (Jul. 5, 2026 APC Triumph In Paris). I covered APC previously for their anniversary show where Andrade showed up and Ricky Sosa made international waves. That was in their typical small room. This was in a bigger venue in Paris with Mustafa Ali and Kris Statlander making the trip. Ali has been on a great in-ring run in TNA and gives Erin Ordo the match of his life. A great showing from Ordo who will probably get picked up sooner than later.

5. Triple Crown Title Match Suwama (c) vs. Joe Doering (Oct. 21, 2017 AJPW Jun Akiyama & Takao Omori 25th Anniversary). Doering sadly passed away in June of this year of brain cancer. This is a look back at the start of his 2nd Triple Crown run. Doering works as a pretty classical, hard to knock off your feet, big man against Suwama.

6. 16 Carat Gold Tournament 2026 Quarter Final Match Tetsuya Naito vs. Ahura (Mar. 7, 2026 wXw 16 Carat Gold 2026 - Night 2). One of the triumphs of 2026. Ahura is doing the best work of his career and works very well around Naito’s current form. The result is Naito’s best singles match in a number of years and one that he may not top.

7. IWGP Heavyweight Title Tournament Final Match Giant Bernard vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi (Jul. 17, 2006 NJPW Circuit 2006 Turbulence - Night 12). The first reign as IWGP Heavyweight Champion begins for the Ace as he must topple a foreign monster. Bernard is great in his role here as a monster heel who can move. Tana is all guts and emotion, capturing the hearts of the audience.

8. Takumi Iroha & Sareee vs. Mio Momono & Senka Akatsuki (Jul. 26, 2026 Marvelous Funabashi Arena Main Event). A road to tag on Marvelous that doesn’t even show on some results sites. High energy and action packed with some quality Senka and Sareee time.

Full Show Picks:

1. JTO Girls Title Match MIRAI (c) vs. Tomoka Inaba (Jul. 10, 2026 JTO 7th Anniversary). JTO gets a good Korakuen Hall crowd with Saya Kamitani on the semi main. The main is a physical war of attrition with lots of struggle and fight. Well worth watching.

2. Loser Leaves Town Coal Miner’s Glove On A Pole Steel Cage Tuxedo Street Fight Ted DiBiase vs. Jim Duggan (Mar. 22, 1985 Houston Wrestling). What a fight! If you’ve never seen Ted or Duggan prior to their WWF work, you have to drop everything and watch it. Blood, violence, and just two people trying to hurt each other. Ted is one of the best at giving you nothing to cheer for while Duggan has such a likability for a big man.

3. West Coast Pro Heavyweight Title Match Adam Priest (c) vs. Titus Alexander (Jul. 25, 2026 PrideStyle/West Coast Pro Rooted). Priest is at his best as a heel champ. Titus showcases how polished he’s become. A natural matchup with lots of great selling. Had a lot of fun with this.

The year 1983 saw Buzz Sawyer fully transform into the Mad Dog, have violent dog collar matches with Roddy Piper, and the Last Battle of Atlanta cage match with Tommy Rich. Buzz even turned good guy and joined forces with his brother Brett to end the year.

Larry Zbyszko arrived in March and quickly became a great weekly TV character. He stalled, hired mercenaries, refused to wrestle on TV and used every trick to capture and hold the National Title. He even bought the belt!

The debuting Road Warriors took Georgia by storm in June under the direction of “Precious” Paul Ellering. Jake Roberts arrived in the fall as a cold and calculating heel. He linked up with Ellering and the Road Warriors as the Legion Of Doom heading into 1984.

Whenever Ric Flair was the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, he made Georgia a consistent stop including feuds with Tommy Rich, Butch Reed, and Tony Atlas.

Buzz Sawyer lost his hair in a cage match to Butch Reed but prevented them from showing the footage. Stan Hansen showed up to support Tommy Rich against Buzz and Ole Anderson.

Bruiser Brody and Abdullah the Butcher battle to a draw at The Omni.

Tito Santana knocks Buzz’s headgear off during a match.

Tony Atlas returns to a big pop. The Superstar temporarily aligns with the faces against Buzz and Ole to teach them a lesson. Stan Hansen Superstar is being truthful.

The Last Battle of Atlanta on October 23 ends the Rich-Sawyer rivalry inside a steel cage with Rich winning. This was considered a holy grail match for a very long time that we now have in full. Jake Roberts attacks Ole after the Ellering cage match to become the new top heel.

Jimmy Valiant arrives bringing tons of energy and teams with Pez Whatley.

Ole Anderson debates banning the DDT of Jake Roberts because it’s so lethal.

Also at The Omni, Jake Roberts took apart Brett Wayne for over twenty minutes for the National Title before the attack on Ole at the end of the night.

1. $10,000 Peso Match Gringo Loco, Iron Kid, Turbo & Vengador vs. Bandido, Mexa Boy’s (Noisy Boy & Spider Fly) & Zonik (May 29, 2026 RIOT Lo Mismo Pero Sin Cambios). The Highly acclaimed lucha multiman that’s gotten a lot of buzz. Unbelievable action and atmosphere. A couple of name you probably know and some that you should.

2. Marina Shafir vs. Zayda Steel (Jun. 16, 2026 ROH YouTube Special Episode #9). Zayda is a perfect underdog for Marina to throw around. Marina’s presence translating into her matches makes them high on my list of things to watch.

3. Bret The Threat vs. Joe Dashou (Apr. 18, 2026 FSW Natural Born Killers 5: Hostile Territory). A nifty shoot style match that maybe snuck under your radar. Dashow is Josh Barnett trained.

4. Amazing Red vs. Kevin Knight (May 22, 2026 HOG Waging War 2026). Right before his heel turn, Knight shows those instincts in a great one against the veteran Red.

5. The Briscoe Brothers vs. Ringkampf (Timothy Thatcher & WALTER) (Oct. 6, 2017 wXw World Tag Team League 2017 - Night 1). A glorious flashback with some of the best wrestlers in the world delivering a hard hitting tag team war.

6. Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair (Jun. 18, 1995 WCW The Great American Bash). On the shortlist for best WCW matches of 1995 and arguably the best of the many these two had together. For new subscribers, I have a full journey into 1995 WCW available.

7. TNA World Tag Team Title Match Christopher Daniels & Kazarian (c) vs. AJ Styles & Kurt Angle (Jun. 10, 2012 TNA Slammiversary X). Excellent, sub 15 minute match. Styles and Angle meshed well as a team and Bad Influence were on top of their game.

8. Kyushu Pro Title Match Genkai (c) vs. Kodai Nozaki (Jun. 29, 2026 Kyushu Pro 18th Anniversary). I’ve been tracking Kyushu Pro since starting these free match comps and recently they held a big show, drawing over 2.5k in Fukuoka for their anniversary. The main event was a true heavyweight war, gripping and emotional. Absolutely in love with it. This was unfinished business from over 3 years ago and it got settled in front of some of wrestling’s best fans. Watch the full show too and you’ll get some giant panda business…

It’s 1933 in Mexico City and the promotion that would come to be known as CMLL begins as EMLL (Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre). Fast forward to 2023 and the company produces a series of videos commemorating their 90th anniversary. These are their highlighted moments and images celebrated throughout the series along with a few extra notes that I found interesting.

2010’s

2010: La Sombra wins two masks and Volador Jr. claims the prestigious Copa Bicentenario (Bicentennial Cup) as Mexico commemorates 200 years of independence. At Homenaje a Dos Leyendas, Sombra unmasks Felino (Mar. 19) and at the Anniversario, (Sept. 3), he unmasks Olimpico in a 14-man mask vs. mask cage match. The unlikely duo of Atlantis & Máscara Dorada win the Torneo Nacional De Parejas Increíbles or “National Incredible Pairs Tournament” over Team Jalisco (La Máscara and Negro Casas). Parejas Increibles is the pairing of a tecnico and a rudo. In this version, they teamed up wrestlers from the region they were trained in. Angel De Oro unmasks Fabián el Gitano (Jul. 10). Volador Jr. defeats Mistico in the final of the Copa Bicentenario (Sept. 17) which honored lucha libre legends Cien Caras, Satánico, Mocho Cota, Ringo Mendoza, Tony Salazar, Talismán, Halcón Ortiz, Fishman, Lizmark, and Sangre Chicana.

2011: The first ever FantasticaMania tour begins in Japan, establishing it as CMLL’s premier international event that still runs to this day. The tour launches on January 22 in partnership with NJPW highlighting stars like Mistico and Averno. On April 15, CMLL showcased lucha libre at Brazil’s Cultural Festival. Angel De Oro claimed the Reyes Del Aire tournament defeating Virus and the Forjando un Ídolo tournament defeating Polvora. Volador Jr. won Leyenda De Plata defeating Jushin Liger (Oct. 7). At the Juicio Final, La Máscara unmasks Averno (Jun. 17). At the 78th Anniversario, Rey Bucanero shaves Felino in a 10-man hair vs. hair match (Sept. 30). Blue Panther won a controversial hair match with Felino via DQ (Dec. 16). Silueta won the CMLL World Women’s Championship (Oct. 18). Dragón Rojo Jr. won CMLL World Middleweight Championship from Jushin Liger (Nov. 18).

2012: Lucha legend Bobby Bonales was honored at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. Blue Panther and Negro Casas went to a draw in a hair vs. hair main event resulting in both having their heads shaved. Hombre Bala Jr. & Super Halcon Jr. won the masks of Rayo Tapatío I & II (Jan. 1). Angel De Oro won his second consecutive Reyes Del Aire over Mr. Aguila. Amapola is honored among 100 Women Leaders of Mexico. Princesa Blanca unmasked Goya Kong in the Infierno en el Ring ten woman mask vs. cage match (Jun. 29). Marcela defeated Tiffany in a hair vs. hair match (Jul. 5). Aéreo lost his mask to Pequeño Nitro (Jul. 15).

2013: CMLL celebrated its 80th anniversary in style. La Sombra defeated Volador Jr. in the Reyes Del Aire Tournament (Feb. 15 Arena Mexico). Soberano Jr. defeated Taurus in the final of Torneo Sangre Nueva (New Blood Tournament - Mar. 12 Arena Mexico). At Homenaje A Dos Leyendas honoring Rayo de Jalisco, Rey Cometa and Stuka Jr. defeated Namajague & Okumura in a mask & hair vs. mask & hair with Namajague being unmasked and Okumura losing his hair (Mar. 15). Namajague became NJPW’s El Desperado. La Sombra and Volador Jr. defeated Atlantis and Último Guerrero in the Torneo Nacional De Parejas Increíbles. Máscara Año 2000 unmasked Mr. Águila in the 10-man Infierno en el Ring hair vs. hair cage match that also included Averno, Blue Panther, Brazo de Plata, Máximo, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero, Rey Escorpión and Rush (Jul. 19 Arena Mexico). The exhibition “Arena México: 80 Years of Lucha Libre” opened at Las Rejas de Chapultepec, featuring over 100 photographs commemorating CMLL’s eight-decade legacy (Sept. 9). A mural by artist Miguel Valverde was unveiled at Arena Mexico depicting lucha libre’s history (Sept. 11). The Main Event of CMLL’s 80th Anniversary show featured La Sombra unmasking Voldaor Jr.

2014: Ultimo Guerrero sees his mask fall at the hands of a living legend. At Homenaje A Dos Leyendas, honoring Cien Caras and Don Salvador Lutteroth González, Marcela claimed the hair of Dalys (Mar. 21 Arena Mexico) . At CMLL’s 81st Anniversary Show (Sept. 19), Atlantis retained his iconic mask defeating Ultimo Guerrero in a mask vs. mask match. Marcela & Princesa Sugehit defeat La Seductora & Princesa Blanca in a Mask & Hair vs. Mask & Hair Match (Aug. 1 Juicio Final) with Seductora being unmasked while Blanca lost her hair and also retired. The Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations were introduced on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 transforming Arena Mexico and establishing a new tradition.

2015: Atlantis faced another tough challenge for his mask. At Homenaje A Dos Leyendas, Volador Jr. & Máximo defeated Rey Bucanero & El Terrible in a hair vs. hair match. Atlantis overcame the odds and unmasked La Sombra at the 82nd Anniversary show (Sept. 18). Atlantis followed that up by winning the Universal Championship Tournament defeating Ultimo Guerrero in the finals. To close out the year, The Panther unmasked Súper Comando in a 12-man mask vs. mask Infierno en el Ring cage match.

2016: Volador Jr. established himself as a big star. Negro Casas defeated Volador Jr.’s father Super Parka in a Hair vs. Hair match (Jan. 1). Volador Jr. vowed revenge and got it claiming Negro Casas’ hair at Homenaje A Dos Leyendas. Esfinge had a breakout year winning Copa Jr. and La Gran Alternativa, sponsored by Volador Jr. In the Grand Prix Internacional (International Grand Prix) Torneo Cibernetico, Volador Jr. led Team Mexico to victory. At the 83rd Anniversary Show, Rey Bucanero won a hair vs. hair match against Super Crazy. Valiente surprised his regular trios partner Volador Jr. to become the Universal Champion. Zeuxis unmasked La Vaquerita in the 10 woman mask vs. hair Infierno en el Ring cage match.

2017: Niebla Roja and Princesa Sugehit lost their masks. Volador Jr. won the Universal Championship Tournament this time, defeating Ultimo Guerrero. Gran Guerrero unmasked Niebla Roja and Zeuxis claimed Princesa Sugehit’s mask at the 84th Anniversary Show. Zeuxis and Sugehit was the first women’s mask match at an Anniversary show. Sanson won the first Rey Del Inframundo (King of the Underworld) Championship, a specially designed belt for the Dia de Muertos celebrations.

2018: Barbaro Cavernario became one of the winners of the Leyenda de Plata tournament solidifying his status. Angel de Oro lost his mask at Homenaje A Dos Leyendas. Volador Jr. and his nephew Flyer won La Gran Alternativa over Último Guerrero and Templario.

2019: Francisco “Paco” Alonso Lutteroth, CMLL’s president for over 30 years, passed away on July 6. Paco is credited with modernizing CMLL. Perro Aguayo died on July 3rd and Mr. Niebla passed away on December 23. The first ever Universal Women’s Championship is held in August. Chamuel became the first mini to lose his mask at an Anniversary show to Microman. Valiente & Star Jr. defeated Místico & Fugaz in La Gran Alternativa. Volador Jr. won the Internacional Grand Prix Torneo for the second time. Último Guerrero claimed the hair of Mascara Ano 2000 and Negro Casas.

Bonus Notes

• Mistico leaves in early 2011 for WWE and the Sin Cara run. He spends a couple years in AAA before returning to CMLL as Caristico in late 2015. He keeps that moniker until 2021 when he becomes Mistico again. The current Dralistico had been portraying Mistico until he left the promotion.

• Último Guerrero, Atlantis and Negro Casas were consistently featured throughout the decade.

• Rush, La Sombra, and Dragon Lee all broke out at different points in the 2010’s. With Rush and Dragon Lee on the outs with the promotion, neither are featured above but were a big part of CMLL. Rush turned into the violent head of Los Ingobernables with La Sombra and La Mascara. Dragon Lee had an incredible series with Kamaitachi (Hiromu Takashahi). Sombra leaves for WWE in 2016 where he takes on the Andrade name.

• Marco Corleone (the former Mark Jindrak) was featured throughout the decade in CMLL and joined Los Ingobernables. When Tetsuya Naito toured the promotion in 2015, he joined the group then formed the famed LIJ (Los Ingobernables de Japon) when he returned to New Japan. Sombra and Rush feuded then made amends before Sombra left the promotion.

• CMLL and ROH struck a working deal that saw talent crossover during the back half of the decade. Matt Taven was one of the more active and successful ROH wrestlers in Mexico during this partnership, peaking with a hair vs. hair match at the 85th Aniversario. El Barbaro Cavernario & Rush defeated Matt Taven & Volador Jr. Taven and Volador had their heads shaved. Rush debuted in ROH as the decade came to a close and won the World Title from Taven.

• The Lucha Brothers had a brief stint in the promotion in 2018-19 using the names King Phoenix & Penta El Zero M.

• LA Park returned in 2018 for a feud with Rush.

• Lucha Libre Elite partnered with CMLL and actually was able to run CMLL arenas including Arena Mexico. This partnership created some unique matchups before it dissolved. Many of which can be found on Youtube still.

• World TV Title Jake Roberts vs. Ron Garvin. This one has a 60 minute time limit. Garvin goes after the arm and Jake goes after the knee. Jake uses the arm and pays for it. Great in close work with Garvin’s headbutts. This is a selling clinic. Garvin hopping around popping jabs!! Ellering pulls his foot down and Jake wins. A bit abbreviated but the match itself was very good.

• Ellering and Sheik interview. Buzz must face the most feared man in wrestling.

• Road Warriors squash.

• Bugsy McGraw vs. Snake Brown. Squash. Road Warriors jump Bugsy and Stan Hansen makes the save swinging haymakers! Hansen and Bugsy are a little crazy.

We see Omni clips of the Road Warriors and Ellering beating up Hansen and McGraw. Also Ronnie Garvin will be here next week with a substantial amount of money to challenge for the TV Title again. A cool angle.

• TV Champion Jake Roberts vs. Mike Jackson. Mike gets a comeback before Jake takes him out.

• King Kong Bundy interview. There’s gotta be someone who can slam him for 15k.

• Dibiase interview. They’re hyping Jan. 7 in Marietta vs Sawyer and Jan 15 at Omni

• Jake and Ellering interview. 1984 will answer a few questions.Rrough and smooth. How can something so hot be so cool inside.

• Bugsy McGraw interview. He wants a match vs Road Warriors.

• Road Warriors vs. Paul Garner and David Jones. Squash.

• Ole is talking to the board about Rich.

• Dibiase interview. People are crying about Tommy losing. He’s finished. He can’t wrestle. Ted’s the best. He did what he promised.

• Les Thornton is sick of Ole jumping into his matches. Let’s see how good Tommy Rogers is. Les is a very British man.

• Buzz and Brett interview. Bob Armstrong teaming with Brett. Brett’s a rough promo.

• Ted Dibiase vs. Mike Starbuck. Squash

• Bundy interview. Insults all the wage workers

• World Junior Champion Les Thornton vs. Tommy Rogers. Les is the veteran in control. Tommy makes an explosive comeback. Les does a great takedown. this shows Les much better. He won’t give Rogers space. Solie really likes calling Les matches. Rogers gets the pinfall but not he title. Buzz congratulates Rogers. Les is fired up at Rogers. They’ve finally given him something to do.

• Gordon Solie says it’s a most unusual program tonight. He brings out Paul Ellering and Jake Roberts. There will be a rematch between Ron Garvin and Jake. He’s not happy with the result last week. Jake will show us that The Snake is fair.

• Road Warriors vs. Mike Jackson and Tracy Stohr. Squash.

• National Champion Ted Dibiase interview. He wants the NWA World Title. The National Title is the stepping stone. Ted runs down his accomplishments. He beat Flair for the Missouri Title and tells him to look over his shoulder. Ted and Flair would have been a great program with Ted as the heel.

• World Television Title Jake Roberts vs. Ronnie Garvin. A more back and forth match than their previous matches. They’ve got good chemistry. Jake is getting frustrated. He suckers Ronnie in. Another time limit draw. Good match.

• Dibiase interview. He’s going back to Cleveland to rid WCW of Tommy Rich. Buzz Sawyer is sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.

• Jake interview. Time is running down for Buzz.

• Results: Ric Flair d. Mike Starbuck. NWA National Television Title Match Jake Roberts (c) vs. Ronnie Garvin ended without a winner as a time limit draw. Chick Donovan d. Snake Brown. Road Warriors d. Mike Jackson and Tracy Stohr

Sun. Dec. 4 Best of World Championship Wrestling

• NWA World Champion Ric Flair interview. He enjoys the sight of two of the best. He’s on top of his profession now. In 1981 he was just a kid and now he’s a man. Everyone wants to be in the ring with Flair.

• Omni clips from the tag tournament with the Mongolians, Randy Savage, Magnum TA. Ole puts over Volkoff big.

• Jake and Ellering interview. He’s still the champion. He’s not going to fall. No one can take it away in 10 minutes.

• Dibiase interview. He’s gotta get the job done. He’s wearing a great sweater.

• Dibiase interview. More on Buzz. He bit off more than he can chew. He’s sick of the reunion with Brett. It shows weakness.

Sun. Dec 4 at The Omni

• Bob Roop vs. Mike Jackson. This was mostly a squash for Roop.

• Chick Donovan vs. Johnny Rich. The crowd is into it. A good face heel dynamic. They work off the arm wringer well. Johnny’s good in the ring. He has Tommy’s fire and some toughness. Rich throws a good dropkick. He wins. I really enjoyed this.

• Ronnie Garvin vs. Cy Jernigan. A quick win for Garvin.

• NWA National Television Title Jake Roberts (w/Paul Ellering) (c) vs. Pez Whatley. Pez gets on the mic and tells Jake he’s tougher to a big pop. Pez shines early with Jake running out the clock. He plays it well like an Arn or Regal would in the future. Pez has a boston crab on as the time is expiring. Pez is very over. The match continues after the time limit. Jake is doing hide the gimmick and the crowd eats it all up. He does a great wobble sell off a headbutt and faceplants. This got even better after the time mark then Pez goes into a very long headlock for no good reason. This ends in a time limit draw. There were some really good stretches in this before it petered out.

• NWA National Heavyweight Title Ted DiBiase (c) vs. Buzz Sawyer. Mostly cheers for Buzz and big heat on Ted. Buzz brings the fight to him and gets the whole crowd barking! It shows how quick fans can turn. This is a great display of heel Ted bumping around. A really good solid match develops before Buzz winds up hitting ref for a DQ. Buzz gets the chair and Ted stands down. People like buzz as a top face

• NWA National Tag Team Title Brett Sawyer vs. The Road Warriors (w/Paul Ellering). Brett is on his own and gets jumped. Buzz comes back out to join him. The crowd is their loudest all night! It settles into a match. Brett flies in to help. The fans eat this up. The Road Warriors were so easy to work off of if you’re a good team. They toss around Brett and get heat on him. Buzz and Brett win clean surprisingly! They’re a good team and this was an entertaining match.

• NWA World Heavyweight Title Ric Flair (c) vs. Tommy Rich. A huge pop for Wildfire and boos for Flair. This felt like a good glimpse at what a title defense looked like for Flair that didn’t have a ton of set up. Rich gets the advantage and Ric takes small shortcuts. They had to work the crowd back into it. Flair using the ropes gets them riled up and this peaks towards the end. Flair blades late. Rich gets a visual pin. Flair hits him with the belt to retain. The fans are quick to head for the exits. I wonder why Flair often bladed at the finish? For photos?

• Ole Anderson claims he is back from the big World Junior Title match in Manila. He’s interested in seeing Bugsy McGraw.

• TV Champion Jake Roberts vs. Jason Walker. Jake showing his skills. He’s avery good squash match worker. Spikes the DDT.

• Christmas Night at The Omni

• Ted Dibiase interview. He’s facing Rich on Christmas night. His credentials speak for themselves. He’s gonna hurt him

• Jake interview. He’s gonna defend vs Brett Sawyer. The world will stay in his hands. I love him referring to the TV Tile as The World. Great promo.

• King Kong Bundy interview. Wearing a great suit. His 10k challenge is running. Bugsy McGraw come and get it at The Omni!

• Road Warriors vs. Mike Jackson and Mike Trickey. They’re tossing Mike Jackson around like crazy!!

• Bugsy McGraw is here with music and rollerskates. What a wild character. Solie laughs. Bugsy is coming for Bundy

• Road Warriors interview. Buzz Sawyer is getting soft. A coward. They have Stan Hansen and Bugsy at The Omni.

• Bugsy McGraw interview. Another wild interview. Bugsy for president. It’s time to stand up.

• Dibiase interview. He’s tired of Rich. He’s gonna give him a vacation.

• Jake interview. There’s not a man who can beat him in 10 minutes. The 25th might be the day for Santa but not Brett Sawyer. Jake’s a commanding presence..

1. Senka Akatsuki vs. Amira (Apr. 18, 2026 PrideStyle Sobre La Luna). Two physical forces collide as the rising star from Japan travels to the United States to take on one of the best on the independents.

2. Nic Nemeth vs. Dylan Fabrizio (c) - Revolución Lucha Libre World Title (Mar. 28, 2026 Guerra de Titanes Ambición de Poder). An enjoyable traveling heel effort from Nic Nemeth in front of a good sized crowd in Chile. Fabrizio was impressive again much like he was when Zack Sabre Jr. made the trip last year.

3. “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and One Man Gang brawl (May 30, 1986 UWF). A terrific quality update and a great look for anyone who is unfamiliar with Duggan’s pre-WWF work. He cuts a promo in here as well.

4. Liiza Hall vs. Dreya Mitchell (Mar. 28, 2026 BOOM! The Coco Harriet Invitational 2026). Liiza is an impressive submission and mat specialist. Dreya displayed a lot of presence as a heel. Physical and charismatic.

5. ROH Pure Title Match Lee Moriarty (c) vs. Cheeseburger (Apr. 25, 2026 LOL The Exhibition). Honor is real in the Philly-based Labor of Love promotion. A match that had meaning and delivered.

6. Carlos Amano vs. Mariko Yoshida (Apr. 30, 2004 GAEA Yoyogi Limit Break). Amano is criminally overlooked and always brought it 100%. About as good of an 11-minute match as you’ll see.

7. Vacant Pandemonium Tag Team Title Match Midnight Heat vs. Sinner And Saint (Feb. 22, 2026 Pandemonium Pro Dual At Don Quixote) Two of the consistently best teams on the independents with contrasting styles. Pandemonium Pro has been putting out some interesting lineups this year and is a promotion to keep your eye on.

8. AAW Women’s Title Match Heather Reckless (c) vs. Sierra (Apr. 24, 2026 AAW Crush & Destroy 2026). A direct, intense brawl between two rivals. It made me want to check out more of their work from AAW. Heather is gaining traction as Heather By Elegance in TNA.

9. NWA United States Tag Team Title Match The Midnight Express (c) vs. The Fantastics (May 14, 1988 NWA World Wide Wrestling). When tag team wrestling was so rich that it needed secondary titles. Two of the best teams of their era go all out. It’s always welcome to see more quality upgrades on Worldwide where some of the best TV matches of all-time took place. The crowd at the finish is awesome.

10. Atsushi Onita, Crusher Bam Bam Bigelow & Genichiro Tenryu vs. Lionheart, Vampiro Casanova & Warlord (Jul. 17, 1994 WAR Revolutionary Yojo ‘94 - Night 2). A reported 11k filled Ryogoku Kokugikan on the night for the Super Battle Of 6 Men Tournament. This is very WAR where you just have to watch it.

• Solie and Ole give a run down of the champions. Ted Dibiase won the National Title from Brett Sawyer in Cleveland in a classic match that put Ted in the hospital.

• Randy Rose & Jimmy Randolph vs. Bob Brown and Johnny Rogers. Squash.

• Paul Ellering interview. Quick.

• Buzz and Brett Sawyer interview. They’re happy that the family is back together. Solie talks about letters from Portland saying they were brothers. Brett explains the change. It was a surprise.

• Les Thornton vs. Pat Rose. Squash. Les has a big Junior Heavyweight Title match across the pond coming up.

• Road Warriors vs. Tracey Stohrer and Joshua Stroud. Squash.

• TV Champion Jake Roberts interview. It doesn’t matter who it is. He’s ready for everyone. step on up. will give Garvin one more chance. Ellering mocks the Sawyers. He got an injunction that Brett cannot wrestle with a cast.

• Brett Sawyer is upset about not being allowed to wrestle with the cast. He does sound a lot like Buzz. Ole tries to get him to relax

• We see a montage of wrestlers coming soon: Butch Reed, Randy Savage, Bruise Brothers, Jim Duggan, Magnum TA, Ric Flair. There’s a lot of interesting names for me but Georgia no longer feels like the center of the NWA universe at all. Wrestlers used to come in for runs and feel like part of the promotion.

• Brett Sawyer vs. Jimmy Rogers. Squash. Sure he’s smaller but Brett can really wrestle.

• The Mongolians vs. Tracey Stohrer and Mike Starbuck. Squash. Mongolians are big guys.

• Jake Roberts & Paul Ellering interview. Jake doesn’t need 52 ways to beat Garvin. Rematch next week.

• King Kong Bundy interview. He wants two opponents, no wimps. Five count gimmick.

• King Kong Bundy vs. Bob Brown and Paul Garrett. Squash.

• National TV Champion Jake Roberts vs. Pat Rose. A cocky Jake squash. He takes his time piecing Pat up. Pat gets a comeback started but is immediately cut off with DDT. Jake maximizes his time again.

• Road Warriors vs. Cy Jernigan and Snake Brown. Squash. Buzz Sawyer and Tommy Rich clear the ring of the Warriors together!!! Buzz and Rich will team up vs Road Warriors. A quick pivot to them teaming up but the fans ate it up.

• Solie opens the show telling us Ric Flair has regained the NWA World Championship. At this point I realized that they never hyped or even mentioned Starrcade on Georgia TV from what we have. Jake and Garvin are going to have a rematch today. Solie brings out FLAIR! He says he disappeared from the center of the wrestling scene here in Georgia but he’s back and better than ever. He’s a man that has learned to diversify his time. He still drives the women wild. He is only going to defend his title when he wants to. He’s very much in sportsman mode.

• Chic Donovan vs. Tommy Rogers. A good competitive match. Rogers hits a sick criss cross powerslam. Rogers wins.

• Buzz Sawyer and Brett interview. They’re going on tour.

• King Kong Bundy vs. Zane Smith & Roger Bond. Squash.

• TV Champ Jake Roberts & Paul Ellering interview. The Legion of Doom. Lots of wrestlers digging a hole for themselves. The Sawyers, Rich, Ole, Pez Whatley. They’re gonna pay. Jake is dealing with 1984. The DDT is over.

• Hyping Flair vs. Rich, the Warriors versus Brett and a 7’4” mystery partners, and Dibiase vs. Buzz for the December 4 Omni show.

• Jake & Ellering interview. Talking about a Columbus six man.

• Buzz & Brett Sawyer vs. Pat Rose & Bob Brown. Squash.

• National TV Title Jake Roberts vs. Ronnie Garvin. One fall, 15 minutes. Garvin focuses on the arm. Jake sells it convincingly. That base sets us up for something really compelling. Garvin gets caught up in the ropes and Jake goes to work in a creative cut off. There’s a nice counter out of the the piledriver. This goes to a time limit draw and they keep fighting.

• Road Warriors interview. Animal gets beeped and Solie gives him a death stare.

• King Kong Bundy interview. 15k challenge coming to geeks in Ohio

• National Champion Ted Dibiase Columbus interview. did what he promised.

• Ted Dibiase vs. Cy Jernigan. Squash.

• Jake Roberts and Paul Ellering interview. He’s not scared of Garvin.

• King Kong Bundy interview.

• Ted Dibiase interview. He’s back to get the job done.

• Les Thornton vs. Jason Walker. Squash.

• NWA World Champion Ric Flair vs. Pat Rose. Flair is now a three-time champ. Solie says it was a delight to be in Greensboro. He still doesn’t say Starrcade, though. Flair outwrestles him and shows his wrestling acumen. He gives Rose a little bit but this is a great contrast in the difference between early 80’s Flair and late 80’s Flair. He wins with a great lateral pin. At some point in the 80s the idea that the World Champion would often display why they are a superior wrestler went away.

• Buzz and Brett interview. Talk upcoming dates. Buzz wants Flair and his belt.

• Road Warriors vs. Bob Brown & Zane Smith. Squash. No mercy.

• Results: NWA World Heavyweight Title Match Ric Flair (c) d. Pat Rose

• We’re opening with a big National Title match with Jake vs Brett Wayne. Solie feels like it’s going an hour which is why it’s starting. Ole says they visited a woman in a hospital in Tampa. She had two sons and they both wrestle. One was the black sheep. One wrestles as Brett Wayne. They’re slowly explaining that he’s Buzz Sawyer’s brother.

• National Title Brett Wayne vs. Jake Roberts. Brett mainly works a headlock early. Jake cuts him off. Buzz Sawyer comes out to watch. He’s getting upset about Jake’s tactics. Paul Ellering and Buzz get into it. Buzz is moving with Brett’s punches. This is such a good reveal. Brett makes his comeback and Buzz cheers him on. Ellering cheap shots Brett and Buzz throws down Paul then tackles Jake to a huge pop. Good match and angle. Buzz raises havoc and cleans house with Brett. Must watch.

• King Kong Bundy vs. Frank Lavert. Ferocious squash.

• Paul Ellering interview. Buzz is letting sentimentality get the better of him. He was gonna get rid of him anyway. Now he has Abdullah The Butcher and time is running out for Buzz. The babyface pivot after a feud blowoff is classic booking of the time.

• Jake Roberts interview. He’s tired of people getting involved in his matches. People keep popping up at the wrong time. He’s got another title match coming.

• Ole Anderson. Brett Wayne comes up and tells Buzz to come home. Ole and Solie let people know that Buzz and Brett are brothers. They appeal to Buzz to make a change in his life.

• Les Thornton vs. Pat Rose. Les is the man of 1001 holds. He wins. OK match..

• Harley Race vs. Reggie Parks. Squash from Florida. Reg was insanely jacked.

• Great Kabuki squash from Mid Atlantic

• Road Warriors vs. Tracy Stohr & Mike Jackson. Squash.

• Ellering and Abdullah interview. The man from Sudan backs up from no man.

• Taped JJ Dillon interview with Abby being weird behind him. The promo is about Buzz. He claims Abdullah is the African heavyweight champion. A bit strange to do this after the Ellering stuff.

• NWA World Television Title Ronnie Garvin (c) vs. Jake Roberts. Jake must win the belt in the first 10 minutes. The match is built around Garvin’s punches and Jake trying to avoid them. He does a great woozy sell. It feels like Garvin’s over just based on how great his punches are. There’s a great bit where Jake’s in a headlock, hears the 3 minute time call and turns on the gas to try and win. He’s so good at working the psychology of these matches in. Garvin makes his comeback with one minute left but Jake has a hidden weapon. Wins the title with the DDT. Good match.

• Jimmy Valiant vs. Great Kabuki. Valiant remains mega over. He beats up Gary Hart too. Kabuki sells a lot for him. It’s simple and effective. Ref bump. Valiant works beyond the back row. He chokes Gary Hart and pins Gary Hart. The ko’d ref counts it. Silly finish but fans were happy.

• Abdullah The Butcher vs. Buzz Sawyer. Buzz blindsides Ellering and we have a hot start. Babyface Buzz is a ball of energy. Abby quickly bloodies him. Lots of outside the ring brawling in front of the people. Buzz fires up. He’s working a lot like Rich. He gets the fork and nails Abby! The fans are super into this. The moms in the crowd are pumping their fists for Buzz. A wild violent brawl and a bloodbath. Buzz hits the ref and they keep fighting after the bell. Great match and a great start for babyface Buzz Sawyer.

• NWA National Tag Team Titles Match Road Warriors (c) vs. Brett Sawyer and Dusty Rhodes. Dusty and Brett do a fun spot early where Brett slips in between Dusty to punch Hawk. The stick and move stuff works well. Hawk and Animal are noticeably bigger from when they debuted. They bump around more than you’d think in these Omni matches. Dusty with a little twirl of the hand can get the whole crowd with him. There’s a great spot where he teases a low blow, gets the ref distracted and pretends he’s innocent. They settle into some heat on Brett and the fans are really behind him. Dusty as well. Match goes to a non finish. Ellering batters Dusty with his shoe. Bloodies him up. Then he tries to break Brett’s arm. Wrestlers clear out to help but they keep the damage. Finally Buzz comes in to clean house and the crowd LOSES THEIR MIND. Dusty back in too. Unbelievable pop.

• Tommy Rich vs. Ted DiBiase. Tommy starts firing great punches and Ted bumps big. I love how Ted gets furious that Tommy got the better of him. He goes to the gut and takes over but only briefly. Tommy and Ted are a perfect match in the ring. Tommy gets a great crimson mask and Ted works it over with the black glove. There’s nothing likeable about Ted in the ring. A consummate heel. Ted gets DQ’d and the two have to be pulled apart.

• Results: Les Thornton d. Pat Rose. Brad Armstrong d. Joe Lightfoot. NWA National Television Title Match Jake Roberts d. Ron Garvin (c) - TITLE CHANGE!!! Jimmy Valiant d. The Great Kabuki. Abdullah the Butcher vs. Buzz Sawyer ended without a winner as a double disqualification. NWA National Tag Team Titles Match Brett Sawyer and Dusty Rhodes vs. Road Warriors (c) ended without a winner as a double disqualification. Tommy Rich d. Ted DiBiase by disqualification

Sat. Nov. 12 World Championship Wrestling

• Ole and Solie talk about the change in Buzz Sawyer and his brother Brett. Brett was told to stay home with an injured hand. The Road Warriors have rejoined forces with Paul Ellering to form a big heel faction with Jake. They show clips of a masked “fan” attacking Tommy Rich that looks suspiciously like Ted Dibiase.

• The annual Thanksgiving night card in The Omni has a $50K Tag Team Tournament, Ted Dibiase vs. Tommy Rich, Jake Roberts vs. Mr. Wrestling II, and The Road Warriors vs. Buzz Sawyer and a partner. Magnum TA and RANDY SAVAGE are in the tag team tournament.

• Ted Dibiase vs. Tracy Stohr. Squash.

• Magnum TA vs. Super Destroyer from Mid South. They put over TA.

• Bruise Brothers and Jimmy Hart interview from Memphis. Jimmy plays The Gentrys “Keep on Dancing.” Bruise Brothers are big bad , rough and tough. They’re Dream Machine and Porkchop Cas in black suits and hats. They come off GREAT here. I absolutely love them. Dream Machine can talk.

• Road Warriors vs. Zane Smith & Greg Wallers. Squash. As mentioned, Paul Ellering is back with them. A very vicious squash. They’re showing what they’ll do to Buzz Sawyer. Before I started this, I had no idea the Warriors broke from Ellering and then rejoined with him.

• We see Omni clips of Buzz taking out the Warriors. Awesome moment with people going wild.

• Jake Roberts and Paul Ellering interview. He’s the new TV champion and promoting the Thanksgiving Omni. Ellering says the reunion feels good and Buzz has nowhere to go without him.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. He explains how Brett kept trying to get him to do things the right way. He just couldn’t take it anymore. He’s speaking normal.

• Jake Roberts interview. He has great jackets. He’s injured more opponents than anyone with the DDT. It’s perfectly legal and lethal. Great interview

• Buzz Sawyer interview. Gives his memories. We’ve gotten a different side of Buzz lately. Life has changed him. He shows his scars. Good promo.

Sun. Oct. 23 at The Omni - Last Battle Of Atlanta

• Les Thornton vs. Joe Lightfoot. Lots of boos for the ref. The ring is bouncy. Joe’s bridge up snap mare is nice. Good wrestler. The ambiance feels like sports. They have a headscissors battle. Les the first one to strike. Les can’t escape the cravat. There’s a cool counter sequence and Les wins. Joe had all the holds until Les found a counter.

• Pat Rose Vs. Bruno Sammartino Jr. This felt closer to TV match with quick action. They run lots of spots. Rose heels it up. Bruno gets the crowd going and wins fairly quick.

• Mr. Wrestling II Vs. Bob Roop - Mask vs Mask. There’s big heat as Mr. Wrestling is ordered not to wrestle by the doctor. Roop is a substitute. If he loses, Mr. Wrestling must unmask. The crowd pops for that so they were pissed at the switch. They’re into this and II. Roop stooges well. The fans really want that mask off the imposter. The grannys and the crowd are irate when a crutch is used for the heel cut off. II dances during his comeback and they fight it out. He rolls up Roop for the win and the crowd ERUPTS! Good match and an example of how popular II still was in The Omni. Mr. Wrestling unmasks but we can’t see him.

• National Title Match: Brett Wayne vs. Jake Roberts. Big cheers for Brett and a bigger but mixed reaction for Jake. This is the first long match of the night and it goes 20+ minutes. Jake maximizes everything he does. Brett scores first and he bails. Jake uses the ropes to get the advantage. They really work the test of strength and a Brett counter gets a big pop. This is all working for the live crowd. Jake punches the injured leg, Brett tries to walk it off and Jake mocks him. When Brett punches, Jake begs off. He’s actually creating space for a cheap shot and attacks the knee viciously. A methodical dissection. Brett is a great underneath babyface. The fans are screaming at the ref for letting Jake get away with using the ropes. Jake slithers and attacks to big heat. Brett is bloodied up bad. They do one big dramatic kickout and the crowd erupts. Brett fires back and all the investment they made paid off. Buzz comes out to watch as Jake ups the viciousness on the leg. The ref stops it. Ole comes in to shield Brett. The announcer says the only way to win the title is pinfall or submission, though. That felt cheap. Brett lunges at Jake. Jake and Buzz even have a faceoff, teasing a face turn and that Buzz has a connection to Brett. I LOVE this match. It put Jake over as the top heel and that it might take a Mad Dog to stop him. When people talk about Jake being a master of in-ring psychology, I’d point them to this as an example of how it’s done.

• The Great Kabuki w/Gary Hart vs. Ronnie Garvin. Ron decks Hart before the bell. They work strikes versus martial arts. There’s a long nerve hold and the people come up big for Ron. The match goes beyond the 10 minutes where the TV Title can change hands. It’s hard to see the finish but Gary Hart gets involved and Kabuki wins. Good match. Garvin is over with the fans.

• National Tag Team Titles The Road Warriors vs. Jimmy Valiant & Pez Whatley. Huge reaction for the Roadies. Valiant and Pez are popular too. Hawk and Animal bump all around for them and the crowd is red hot. The Warriors being ultra protected on TV then bumping around for the live crowd works. A short, fun match that ends in chaos and a DQ.

• Closed Steel Cage Match Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer. The infamous “Last Battle of Atlanta.” There’s a big pop for Tommy coming out while Buzz is being Buzz. He makes sure to show he’s trapped. Tommy elbows that cage and Buzz attacks the arm. He bloodies Rich up. The match is very direct and to the point. They use the cage very well. Rich has that great selling and fire while bloody. It’s all punches. They don’t run any spots at all. Buzz gets bloody and he goes for broke but smashes himself into the cage to a big pop. Rich rams him into it for the great. A perfect babyface win cage match. The point was not to have a back and forth match. It was so the audience could expect the heel to get what was coming to them if they got in a cage match. Buzz also doing a clean loss helps with what he was teasing earlier.

• Steel Cage Match: Paul Ellering vs. Ole Anderson. Ellering gets lowered down and Buzz sells it great. Ole gets a big pop for battering Precious Paul. People are visibly leaving as this goes on too long. Paul is bloodied and Ole wins. Decent but too long and I don’t think Paul and Ole’s deal was really that big. However, Jake assaults Ole after and gives him a vicious beating to cement him as the new top heel of the territory.

• Results: Bruno Sammartino Jr. d. Pat Rose. Les Thornton d. Joe Lightfoot. NWA National Television Title Match The Great Kabuki d. Ronnie Garvin. Mr. Wrestling II d. Bob Roop. • Ole Anderson is showing the effects of beating at The Omni. He puts wrestlers over football players.

• Ted Dibiase taped interview. Ted’s suspension is lifted and he’s going after Tommy Rich and the National Title. Ted says he’s going to Japan for five weeks and will be back to pick up where he left off. He talks a lot about money without being a cartoon character. Ole is concerned about his return. Earlier on Ted felt like he could have been a babyface NWA World Champion. Now he feels like a heel World Champion.

• The hype the Nov. 6 Omni with NWA Champion Harley Race defending against Tommy Rich. The Road Warriors versus Dusty Rhodes & Brett Sawyer. Abdullah the Butcher vs. Buzz Sawyer. Great Kabuki vs. Jimmy Valiant. Jake Roberts vs. Ron Garvin. Brad Armstrong back. Good card on paper.

• National Tag Team Champions Road Warriors vs. Ben Terrell and Joe Lightfoot. Squash.

• Jake Roberts and Paul Ellering interview. Jake is one of the greats today. Precious Paul has two contracts. One for the World TV Title and one for the National Title. Paul is there to handle the paper problems. Jake gets the National Title match next week versus Brett Wayne. They’re hyping it big!

• Jake Roberts vs. Mike Jackson. Mostly a showcase for jake but Mike gets in some offense. Fun match.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. He’s facing Dusty in Cincinnati then Abby in Omni. Paul is looking at him and stroking his beard...

• Jake and Ellering interview on upcoming dates. Hyping Cincinnati shows a lot. Battle Creek, Michigan! Tour dates get as much hype as The Omni.

• Road Warriors interview. No one comes close. A low key interview for once.

• Jake Roberts and Paul Ellering interview. Jake can’t deal with politics and people but Paul can. I like the reasoning for the pairing.

• We see Omni clips of Brett Wayne upsetting Larry Zbyszko to become the new National Champion.

• National TV Title Ron Garvin vs. Mr Wrestling. II is still coming for the mask. I uses a loaded boot. He shoves the ref for a DQ. Just ok. II goes in after the mask after the match.

• Promoting Cincinnati heavily on October 1st. The promotion has definitely split its focus from The Omni.

• Jake Roberts vs. David Jones. Lots of good character work by Jake in this. He’s fully committed.

• Roddy Piper does an insane interview for a dog collar match with Buzz Sawyer on the Cincinnati show. It’s probably more insane that the two had another one of those with how brutal it was.

• National Champion Brett Wayne vs. Bob Brown. A showcase for the new champ. The Road Warriors warn Brett after.

• Jake Roberts interview. He’s going worldwide. Everyone can see him just once in their town. He wants the National Title.

• King Kong Bundy squashes a couple job guys. In his street clothes.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. Talks about Piper, Dusty, and Rich. This is an example of what I was talking about earlier. Instead of being laser focused on one feud at The Omni, he’s talking about three different ones. Dusty Rhodes taped response. He’s got Buzz in Cleveland. Mostly talks about Cleveland. Buzz and Ellering respond saying everyone wants the mad dog.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Joe Lightfoot. Buzz press slams him to the floor! Looks brutal. Joe wins by DQ. Buzz is crazed.

• Jimmy Valiant squash from Mid Atlantic. He’s going crazy. Very over.

• King Kong Bundy interview. A souped up hippie is no match for him. Offers 15k to any man who can slam him!

• Ernie Ladd interview. He can match Bundy’s size.

• Les Thornton vs. Pat Rose. This is all mat wrestling. Les wins.

• Gordon Solie talks about the Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer situation. They’ve agreed this will be their final match and NWA agreed to it. Ole Anderson throws to President Bob Geigel. Last Match Ever. Contracts have been signed. This will be the end. Great hype. I think we’re missing something substantial from last week. This feels like it came out of nowhere based off all the TV. A good idea to move some tickets but watching in context, Tommy hasn’t been featured as well and the feud peaked earlier. The hype itself is well done.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Pat Rose. Buzz squash

• Omni Oct 23rd - The Battle of Atlanta hype!

• Gary Hart interview from Mid Atlantic. Great Kabuki is coming to take out Ron Garvin. He’s gonna settle in Atlanta and take care of business.

• Paul Ellering is upset about being in a cage above the cage!

• Jake Roberts squash. Jake is adding some size. Hits the DDT!

• Buzz Sawyer and Paul Ellering interview. It’s the last time. No more screaming from Buzz.

• Dusty Rhodes taped interview. The most dangerous match. It’s in Grand Rapids.

• Show footage of Ric Flair defending the NWA World Title against Jumbo Tsuruta. Putting over how global Flair is.

• Jake Roberts interview. He tells Brett to step up and defend the title.

1. Open The Twin Gate Title / Sou Ryuo Tag Team Title Match PARADOX (Kagetora & Susumu Yokosuka) (c) vs. Love And Peace (JACKY KAMEI & Riiita) (c) (Apr. 26, 2026 DG Golden Colosseum 2026). A match I saw a lot of hype about and just got in under the wire. JACKY and Riita are brilliant together and in a year of great tag team wrestling, this is right up there.

2. Marina Shafir vs. Alex Windsor (Apr. 12, 2026 AEW Dynasty 2026 - Zero Hour). A perfect undercard match. In my world, I’d have more of these on the actual PPV as they make the actual show flow better. 9 minutes of fury from these two. Windsor has been a hit in AEW and Marina has found her way after they’ve taken the time to show her as a bad ass rather than just tell everyone about it.

3. Maxwell Jacob Friedman (w/Stokely Hathaway) vs. Darby Allin (Mar. 30, 2018 Limitless Only Fools Are Satisfied). A great one to revisit with Darby’s shock AEW World Title win over MJF. It’s always been about the headlock takeover. Really cool to watch if you’ve seen any of their AEW matches.

4. BOOM! Vancouver City Title Match Casey Ferreira (c) vs. Travis Williams (Feb. 27, 2026 BOOM! Work Of Art). A legitimately great match in front of a terrific crowd. Casey is just 22 and I’m sure he’s about to break even more. Travis feels like a young vet and he’s a consistent presence on these playlists. I really have to put over the production and the camera work especially here. BOOM! uploads all their stuff and it’s very well worth a look.

5. ROH Women’s Pure Title Match Deonna Purrazzo (c) vs. Gisele Shaw (Mar. 27, 2026 ROH/MLP Global Wars Canada). The Maple Leaf shows have provided a great setting for more “technical” wrestling. The crowds, the production, and the emphasis from the promotion really help. Deonna shines in her element and for her, the Pure Rules structure are a benefit. Gisele got to show some range here.

6. Goldberg vs. Saturn (Apr. 19, 1998 WCW/nWo Spring Stampede 1998). A very raw match that displays the dynamic that made Goldberg so special. There’s a few things in here that would help make the Goldberg-Raven match so special.

7. BJW World Strong Heavyweight Title Match So Daimonji (c) vs. Kazumasa Yoshida (Jan. 31, 2026 BJW). BJW released this one for free as part of the build for the rematch and it’s well worth checking out if you haven’t seen much from Daimonji’s title run. It’s been great, he’s been great and Yoshida is one to know as well.

8. WPW Women’s Voyageur Cup Final Match Shayna Baszler vs. Jody Threat (Mar. 14, 2026 WPW Voyageur Cup 2026 - Night Two). A cool match from Winnipeg as the winner of the Cup would then face Mercedes Mone for the promotion’s title. Baszler established herself as the bully of the tournament and the beloved Jody Threat had to bring her A game in the final. Great stuff.

9. Open The Brave Gate Title Match Ricochet (c) vs. Dragon Kid (May 6, 2012 Dragon Gate Dead Or Alive). These two can still perform at a high level athletically over a decade later but I’m always wowed when I go back and see their matches from this time period. There are so many things in here that are commonplace but rarely will you find anyone do them as well as these two. A special time in Dragon Gate.

10. The Spectral Envoy (Frightmare, Hallowicked & UltraMantis Black) vs. Cheeseburger, Tracy Williams & Weber Hatfield (May 25, 2025 PPL A Link To The Past). A fitting main event trios match for a show entitled “A Link To The Past.” If you’ve liked their work in the past or enjoy the art of a crowd-pleasing trios, this is for you.

• Tommy Rich vs. Bob Roop. Rich wins a good competitive match. It feels like he’s been de-emphasized in 1983. Solie shows Omni clips of Rich and Irwin where Rich cuffed and whipped him then Gary Hart and Kabuki attacked.

• Larry Zbyszko interview. Calls Bruno Jr. a punk.

• Road Warriors interview. They’re coming to rip faces off! Brett Wayne is a cry baby.

• King Kong Bundy interview. From Mid South. He’s suited and looking like a boss. He’s from Atlantic City and grew up tough. He’s coming to the mecca, Atlanta, to take out Tommy Rich. He wants to be the biggest name in wrestling. He’s got the five count gimmick. Really strong interview and presentation.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. David Jones. Buzz squash.

• Junkyard Dog interview. Also from Mid South with a young Jim Ross. There’s only one dog! Talks about frustration and humiliation. He comes off like a mega star. Buzz Sawyer responds in the studio and wants this dog fight.

• National Tag Team Champions Road Warriors vs. Joe Lightfoot & Mike Jackson. Total squash. Brett Wayne comes out but Ole holds him back.

• King Kong Bundy vs. Kelly Kiniski. A good squash from Mid South.

• National Champion Larry Zbyszko vs. Randy Barber. Squash.

• Junkyard Dog vs. Boris Zurkhov. Another one from Mid South.

• Jerry Brisco vs. Red Dog Lane. From Mid-Atlantic. Jerry works the mat and wins.

Sat. Sep. 10 World Championship Wrestling

• Ted Dibiase vs. Chief Joe Lightfoot. Ted has bulked up since the last time he was in Georgia. He has the black glove now. Ole talks about Ted’s change in attitude and says the fans can judge for themselves. He looks great here. Ted says he’s back where the action is. Solie asks him about the glove and he claims it’s a hand injury. Nice guys finish last. He talks about how he was dropped on his head because he was a nice guy. A very good reintroduction.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. It’ll be a dog fight versus JYD.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Tony Zane. Squash

• Junkyard Dog taped interview. He’s coming to take out the Mad Dog. Buzz signs the contract and this feels like a big match.

• Wild Bill Irwin vs. Brett Wayne. A competitive match with Rich cheering Wayne on. Irwin has it but Rich pulls the leg up. Brett rolls up Irwin for the shock win. The crowd reacts big. Irwin says he has someone coming to take care of Rich. He’s bringing in King Kong Bundy! It’ll be a tag match against Piper and Rich in The Omni. Irwin jokes that Tommy gets blown up doing interviews.

• King Kong Bundy interview from Houston. A scrawny Piper is making a big mistake. He’s the man who slammed Andre! Good interview again from Bundy.

• Wild Bill Irwin vs. Pat Rose. Squash.

• Ted Dibiase vs. Tony Zane. Dibiase showcase. He pulls him Zane up and uses the Figure 4. He says after that he’s learned how to dish it out. His old friend Tommy Rich is the man to beat and he’s here to beat him. I like how he references his past history in the territory.

• Mr. Wrestling vs. Mr Wrestling II. II goes for the mask but the Road Warriors attack him. Big brawl.

• Jake Roberts music video. Set to ominous music. vicious. He’s tall and skinny but has something unique. There’s a run down on screen of his attributes including Estimated Time of DDT. Show finishes with slowmo of the DDT. A great video!!

• Buzz Sawyer interview. An unhinged promo in response to Slater.

• Gary Hart and Great Kabuki interview from Mid Atlantic. Where have they been? Hart heard Piper and Rich need to be handled. They were the kings of Atlanta.Targeting Pistol Pez. Very good interview. Solie puts them over big and shows a squash match from Mid Atlantic. Kabuki’s expanded his presentation since he has last in Atlanta.

• Dick Slater interview. Buzz is worried now. He’ll be the Mad Dog.

• Wild Bill Irwin vs. Tony Zane. Squash

• Show a Briscos win from Mid Atlantic. Some slick mat work from Jack.

• Road Warriors interview. They’re on tour. They’ve hopped on the Harley’s cemetery tour. Hawk is getting his interview style down.

• Buzz Sawyer and Larry Zbyszko interviews. No more games.

• Roddy Piper taped interview. His toughest matches are versus Buzz. He rips Ellering and Gary Hart. He’s a trouble shooter and wants to come back. Piper’s fired up! Ellering and Buzz respond quickly.

• Larry and Buzz interviews again. Time is running out.

• Dick Slater taped interview from Mid Atlantic. He has a crazy reputation. He used to be off the wall but he’s settled down. Now eh’s quiet and dangerous. Very good interview. Buzz responds saying he’s been through them all. Slater’s another notch.

• Wild Bill interview. Tommy Rich runs likes a dog. Handcuff match.

• Road Warriors interview. They’re upset about Brett Wayne. They’re fine with no DQ matches. They’ve slept in alleys. Hawk with an insane look and interview! They jump Brett Wayne. I’m surprised they went back heel with them so quickly.

• Larry Zbyszko vs. Joe Lightfoot. They’re hanging flags now instead of the WCW banner. Larry leaves and loses by countout.

• Results: Buzz Sawyer d. The Wrestler. Brett Wayne d. Bob Brown. Joe Lightfoot d. Larry Zbyszko by countout

Sun. Aug. 28 Best of World Championship Wrestling

• Great Kabuki, Greg Valentine, Gary Hart interview from Mid Atlantic. The NWA backdrop looks slick. JCP fully feels like the A territory in comparison whereas Georgia used to feel superior. Hart wants Ole to watch what Kabuki does to Pez. They show a Kabuki training video.

• Briscos interview. How can they deal with Road Warriors in a Texas Tornado match? They can whip a tornado. Good promo.

• Buzz, Larry tour interviews. Larry is having a B town feud with Bruno Jr.

• Road Warriors interview. They don’t care about people. They just bust heads.

Sun. Aug. 28 at The Omni

• Clips from Aug 27 TV. High quality. Tommy is Rich gonna cuff and whip Irwin. Buzz has been through them all. Slater just another notch. Road Warriors tell Briscos the only way out is suicide. Pre recorded comments from Jack and Jerry. Road Warriors got confused when they wrestled them so they resorted to brawling. They wrestle tornados every day in Oklahoma.

• Joe Lightfoot vs. Mr. Wrestling. Good solid wrestling to open the card. Joe has a brief flurry and the hated Mr. Wrestling hotshots him then puts him away.

• Brett Wayne vs. Bob Roop. Bob is a big bruising heel, Brett scrappy underdog. He uses his quickness well and fans are into it early. They work to their strengths well. Good dynamic. Brett catches him with a rollup coming in for the pin to a good pop.

• Paul Ellering vs. Bruno Sammartino Jr. This is decent. Crowd enjoys Bruno Jr. outwrestling Paul. He unloads with big punches. Hits a press slam. Paul gets counted out.

• NWA World Tag Team Titles (Mid-Atlantic-Version) Texas Tornado Match Jack Brisco and Jerry Brisco (c) vs. Road Warriors. All four are in the ring fighting and it feels organic. The Briscos use teamwork to counteract the power of the Warriors. They work the story of the match with smarts versus brute force. The Briscos attack their legs and bring in big orange chairs. The Roadies back down and leave. The fans love it. A bit short but effective.

• National TV Champion Larry Zbyszko vs. National Champion Mr. Wrestling II. II throws down the belt and dates Larry to get it. There’s a great start where Larry runs into II’s punches and the crowd chants along. Larry is in his element with an over babyface toe work against. The match is good fun. Larry uses the ropes to steal it and the fans are irate. II hits his knee after and Larry flees.

• Handcuff Match Tommy Rich vs. Bill Irwin. The loser gets cuffed and bull whipped. Rich bleeds early and sells. Irwin’s solid but he doesn’t feel that over or established. The match is good. Rich catches him in a cradle to win. Rich cuffs and whips him until Kabuki attacks Rich. Pez and Ole make the save. Great heat for this and it rolls into the next match.

• Pez Whatley vs. The Great Kabuki. Ole roots Pez on. His punches are great. This is very heated and probably had more sustained heat than any match on the card. I love how Pez celebrates his own kickout after Hart tripped him. Ole trips Kabuki in response and Pez wins with a headbutt! Huge pop. Good stuff again for Pez. Gary Hart heels on the crowd after and gets a ton of heat. Kabuki shoves down Hart. Hart slowly covers his face to calm him down. A good bit to distract from the loss.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Dick Slater. Slater meets him outside and they start fast. It clams back down in the ring. It’s mainly Slater grinding on the arm. Ellering gets a shot in. Buzz grinds down Slater. It’s quite long. Buzz gets bloodied. Slater gets DQ’d for using an object. This was pretty disappointing.

• Results: Mr. Wrestling d. Joe Lightfoot. Bruno Sammartino Jr. d. Bob Roop. Larry Zbyszko vs. Mr. Wrestling II ended without a winner as a double disqualification. Handcuff Match Tommy Rich d. • Larry Zbyszko and Paul Ellering interviews for Omni tonight. Mad Dog’s world!

Sun. Aug 14. at The Omni

• Arn Anderson vs. Joe Lightfoot. Arn’s fundamentals are good. They get the crowd to bite on the first big spot they run. There’s a double pin but Arn lifts his shoulder to win.

• Rick Rude vs. Mr. Wrestling. Rick is young and skinny. This is very simple and they go to a time limit. The referee’s decision was that Rude won and Mr. Wrestling jumps him. Just ok and Rude getting experience.

• Iron Sheik vs. Brett Wayne. The crowd is loud with USA chants and Sheik is easy to work off of. There’s a good criss cross spot. Brett gets busted open and Sheik bites the cut. Brett shows a good scrappy underdog effort and wins to a huge pop. Good match. Ellering attacks Brett after and a fan tries to ge in the ring. Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer are both out with Rich protecting Brett.

• TV Title Ron Garvin vs. Larry Zbyszko. The rule is that the title is on the line for the first ten minutes. There’s big heat on Larry. Garvin is introduced as the one man gang. His punches are incredible. Larry bails but now as challenger, this strategy works against him. Larry has to actually turn up the heat to try and win the title. Garvin counters a piledriver to win. Good match again.

• National Tag Team Titles The Road Warriors vs. Mr. Wrestling I & II. The Warriors jump them. II is still very over with the Georgia crowd. The fans are hooting and hollering with every blow. The ref doesn’t see Animal clobber I for the cut off. The Road Warriors win to tons of heat. This was a blast.

• US Champion Greg Valentine vs. Pez Whatley. Pez gets a good pop and Greg does some nice work before the match to set up an initial Pez attack. You can feel Greg’s blows land. I like the way once he gets ahold of Pez, he makes him fight. The people come up big for Pez’s first comeback. Greg targets the arm but Pez uses headbutts instead. I’m really impressed with his selling. The match keeps progressing to bigger and bigger pops for Pez’s comebacks. Greg sues the belt and gets DQ’d. Pez gets toe fire back after and Greg has to flee. A very good match that also helped Pez a lot.

• Tommy Rich vs. Bill Irwin - Bull Whip. The whip is on a pole and whoever gets it, gets to use it. The ring announcer is a bit confused. Rich is the consummate babyface, never stopping to fire back. I’m impressed with Irwin as a big, solid heels who bumps well. An actual good pole match! Irwin gets the whip first. Rich fires back and there’s some good struggle. The crowd goes wild as he gets some shots in. Irwin leaves and gets counted out. Another good match.

• Roddy Piper vs. Buzz Sawyer - Dog Collar. Piper is very over as a babyface. They battle over the chain to start and violence is in the air. I like how Buzz sells one whip with the chain to put it over. They actually do the thing wrestlers talk about of making every blow count. Buzz is crazy but he can’t out crazy Roddy. Piper gets busted open big time. Piper is excellent in this. He makes an incredible big violent comeback in front of the people. He ties up Buzz with the chain and pins him. GREAT MATCH!

1. EVE International Title Kris Statlander (c) vs. Charlie (Mar. 8, 2026 EVE 146: Wrestle Queendom VIII). The UK-based women’s promotion puts on their biggest show. The former Dakota Kai and Evie works her first match in a year and puts in a very good showing against the former AEW Women’s Champion.

2. WCW World Heavyweight Title Big Van Vader (w/Harley Race) (c) vs. Cactus Jack (Mar. 7, 1993 WCW Main Event). It’s been awhile since I revisited this match in their series of battles and it landed great with me. Sometimes these WCW taping crowds could be hit or miss in this period but they were going for this on.

3. Reptil & Young Hunters (Falcon Kidd & Leon Negro) vs. El Cartel (Jhoan Stambuk, Trent Blunt & Trevor Blunt) (Mar. 21, 2026 Gladiadores Gladiversario MMXXVI). I’ve had this Peru based promotion on my radar for a bit but haven’t jumped in. This match made me glad I did. A traditional trios with well defined rudos and tecnicos, combination offense, and more. I want to investigate Gladiadores a little more.

4. Heart Of SHIMMER Title Tournament Final Three Way Elimination Match Candice LeRae vs. Heidi Lovelace vs. Nicole Savoy (Apr. 2, 2016 SHIMMER Volume 80). The third match of the night for all three and a great snapshot in time. Savoy, the suplex and submission specialist, did a great job getting heat on her two beloved opponents. A fitting final and it’s great that SHIMMER is putting up so many full matches.

5. Kyushu Pro Title Hitamaru Sasaki (c) vs. Genkai (Mar. 8, 2026). Kyushu has an incredible crowd and you may remember Genkai from his incredible match with Mentai Kid last year. This time he’s facing the technical wizard veteran Hitamaru Sasaki in an emotional battle.

  • Super Asia Title Rina Yamashita (c) vs. Miya Yotsuba. A wonderful match. I really dig seeing Rina outside of the death match stuff. Probably the best match of this whole playlist. Miya has risen very fast in ChocoPro.

• Mar. 29, 2026 IWRG

  • IWRG Mexico Title Hell Boy (c) vs. Jack Morris. A wicked battle as Morris shows a nastier side against a rudo Hell Boy trying to protect his title at all costs. I wasn’t expecting this to go as hard as it did.

• Mar. 26, 2026 Stardom New Blood 30

  • Future Of Stardom Title Ranna Yagami (c) vs. Aya Sakura. The free New Blood shows have the next wave of talent. A super impressive performance by Ranna here and she looks more than ready to make an impact.

• Nov. 9, 2025 NAP Faneto

  • Joshua Bishop vs. Tommy Davis. This is a total throwback to an underdog versus monster match. Bishop has Sid type presence and Davis is a hard hitter. It’s short and electric. One of my most fun finds of this month.

In the June 18th, 1985 edition of the Japanese Weekly Pro Wrestling Magazine (No. 97), they took a look at the state of TV ratings as of the first half of the year. This feature included a unique scenario with NJPW, AJPW, and UWF taping on the same day, insights on what was and wasn’t moving ratings, and a full breakdown of all the ratings up until that point.

On May 31st, 1985, NJPW, AJPW, and UWF all filmed for TV on the same day for the first time. That fact along with the steady increase in AJW’s ratings prompted this piece.

What The TV Schedule Looked Like

• New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW): Broadcasts live on TV Asahi every Friday at 8PM

• All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW): Broadcasts on tape delay on Nippon TV every Saturday at 5:30PM. Heavily rumored to be returning to primetime in the fall.

• Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF): Matches aired on a three week delay as part of Tokyo TV’s “World Pro Wrestling” broadcast along with US matches. It was reduced to a monthly special but is said to be returning to weekly every Monday at 7PM on June 24.

• All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling (AJW): Broadcasts taped matches every Monday at 7PM on Fuji TV as well as sometimes during daytime. Matches are usually a few weeks old. Broadcasts include musical performances as well.

The story notes that the viewership ratings are from the Video Research company which is one of two companies that conduct television rating research. They note that the figures tend to be more conservative and represent the Kanto region in Japan. The region includes seven prefectures (Tokyo, Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Tochigi) and the Greater Tokyo area.

The article came to a few key points on TV ratings:

Promotional turmoil does not translate to TV ratings

This was a period that featured a lot of talent jumping ship and concern in the magazines about the inner turmoil within the major promotions. TV ratings remained relatively stable in spite of it all and what fans reacted in the buildings, didn’t always move ratings a lot.

The example given is Riki Choshu and his Army leaving for All Japan. It was supposed to be a big blow and there was a lot of negativity amongst magazine fans about the Machine Army but ratings remained about the same. At this point, only Inoki really moved ratings outside the norm for New Japan. They were also down from the 20%+ ratings they achieved during Tiger Mask’s run.

One interesting note as that Choshu was said to draw more female fans during his peak in New Japan. His jump to All Japan didn’t translate in huge ratings for them but it did raise the floor for ratings which can be considered a success. The article notes that they were seeing bigger fluctuations before the Ishin Army arrived.

The only things that seem to negatively impact ratings at the moment are baseball and sumo.

Katsumi Matsuoka, TV Asahi producer, noted: “Selectively speaking, people who watch TV want to see Inoki; they’re satisfied as long as he’s on screen.”

Even still, the major Inoki and Brody match following Brody’s jump was still only in the upper range of New Japan’s TV ratings (16.7%). The highest ratings for the first half of 1985 were for Feb. 5 (Inoki/Bundy, Hogan/Fujinami) and Mar. 15 (Inoki/Schultz, Fujinami/Higgins, Strong Machines/Hiro Saito & Umanosuke Ueda). The sure bet for New Japan was airing Inoki and Fujinami matches together but nothing, not even Brody was getting them back to the Tiger Mask numbers.

Demographics skew younger

This was a trend that began during the Tiger Mask boom where wrestling audiences began skewing younger. That has remained during this period and the audience was more loyal with less big swings in ratings. The stability has helped but nothing appears to be on the table to get wrestling back above the 20% benchmark.

Crush Gals and women’s wrestling surges

A major point of the story was how competitive AJW was with the AJPW and NJPW in TV ratings with a Crush Gals collision between Chigusa Nagayo and Lioness Asuka on April 22 hitting a 16.8% TV rating. In 1984, weekly ratings were in the 6-7% range but now they consistently exceed 10%.

Of all the promotions, it was the only one showing tangible growth. On average for regular night episodes, NJPW was doing 16%, AJPW was doing 11%, AJW was doing 11% and World Pro Wrestling was doing about 5%.

I found it difficult to find which matches aired on what episode of TV beyond the one mentioned. If someone has those, please let me know.

US and Shoot Style draw smaller audience

Lastly, it was interesting to see how the UWF was doing on TV as part of a block with US matches. The World Pro Wrestling block started as a way to show US and Mexico matches in Japan and feed that appetite. While it seems to have dropped off in 1985 ratings wise, there was still an audience for it. The best UWF being able to do is get a match here and there on a few weeks delay doesn’t speak too well for them and the promotion wouldn’t last to the end of 1985.

The strongest weekly numbers were for Flair/Brody matches on Jan. 12 & Feb. 2. A recent special with Flair/Race did the highest total numbers.

• Pez Whatley vs. Pete Martin. Squash. Pez showing he’s not a fluke. Tommy Rich and Steve O help him even the odds against the heels.

• Larry Zbyszko interview. He says it’s only just begun for Pez. It’s long road down. They’re really hyping this match well. Buzz comes out saying they created a monster!

• Larry Zbyszko vs. Rick Rude. Rude is skinny and the national arm wrestling champion. He gets some offense but Larry wins.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. Tommy Rich is sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong. He’s hinting at a Loser Leaves Town match. He’s gonna put Rich out of wrestling.

• Buzz Sawyer vs. Ronnie Garvin. They’re back at it with more hard hitting action. Some quality headbutts. Buzz reverses a cradle for the win. A good one for him after putting over Pez.

• Paul Ellering and Iron Sheik interview. Sheik took a loser leaves town match with Garvin to put him out of wrestling.

• Bruno Sammartino Jr. vs. Bob Brown. Squash. It has been a few years since he was here.

• Wild Bill Irwin interview. He’s coming to The Omni tomorrow.

• Road Warriors vs. Jim White and Tracey Stohrer. Quick squash..

He got his friend Mr. T aka. his tire iron! The police came and he left town. Now he got a call from his friend Wildfire Tommy Rich and eh’s more than happy to oblige. Piper’s whipping himself with a belt! We kill mad dogs! GREAT PROMO! Buzz responds. He ran Piper out of town. Another much needed appearance.

• Buzz Sawyer interview. Everyone thinks they can beat the Mad Dog. We get a new Roddy Piper interview from Mid Atlantic. He has a big pipe this time. While Sawyer was learning to wrestle, he was learning to fight. Buzz is upset and viciously squashes his opponent. Sawyer turns around after and PIPER IS ACTUALLY HERE! Piper attacks him! Great surprise. Rich and Irwin out to help.

• US Champ Greg Valentine vs. Bret Hart. From Mid Atlantic. Not that Bret Hart!

• Buzz Sawyer and Bill Irwin interview. CRAZY! Buzz breaks a board over his forehead until he bleeds!

• Mr. Wrestling I & II vs. Bob Brown and Zane Smith. Extended squash. They’re getting ready to face the Road Warriors. Road Warriors come out and I & II invite them in. Warriors don’t go.

• Jack & Jerry Brisco interview from Mid Atlantic. They can do a lot but Roadies can only do a little. Jerry is the better interview here. They’re the world’s best tag team. They’ve all bitten the dust. Wrestlers versus street fighters. I love the build for this. They’re gonna run them out of gas!
