Where: Conflict-affected and frontline regions, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhya, and Poltava.

The Situation

Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the war has had devastating and prolonged impacts on both people and animals. Millions of families have been displaced, infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, and access to food, income, and basic services has been severely disrupted.

Animals have been deeply affected by the conflict. Companion animals have been injured, abandoned, or left without access to veterinary care, while farmers have lost livestock, income, and the means to sustain their families. As the war continues, the needs have shifted from short-term emergency response to longer-term support that helps households stabilize and rebuild amid ongoing uncertainty.

In response, Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) has established long-term partnerships with Ukrainian animal welfare organizations, veterinary teams, farmer groups, and community-based partners. Together, we are addressing urgent animal health needs while supporting families in protecting livelihoods, restoring food security, and regaining a sense of stability in the face of a protracted crisis.

What We Are Doing

VWB’s Ukraine program combines emergency veterinary support with livelihood recovery initiatives, recognizing that families cannot wait for the war to end to begin rebuilding their lives. Our work focuses on the following interconnected areas:

1. Emergency veterinary care and essential supplies: We provide pet food, medicines, vaccines, and veterinary supplies to animal shelters, volunteer initiatives, and vulnerable households. This includes preventative care such as spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and parasite treatment to reduce disease risks in shelters and communities.

2. Support for animal shelters and animal welfare organizations: Working with local partners, we support shelters affected by the war through facility repairs and upgrades, equipment provision, and operational support. Where possible, we assist with shelter assessments and rebuilding efforts to ensure animals can be cared for safely and humanely.

3. Livelihood recovery through small-scale farming: As the conflict continues, VWB supports households to rebuild livelihoods through poultry and livestock initiatives. Farmers receive animals, feed, veterinary support, and training in sustainable production and basic business skills. These initiatives help families restore food security, generate income, and reduce reliance on humanitarian aid.

4. Capacity strengthening and knowledge exchange: We work alongside Ukrainian veterinarians, animal welfare professionals, and farmer organizations to strengthen local capacity through collaboration, resource-sharing, and online learning opportunities. This includes free webinars and technical exchanges between Ukrainian and Canadian professionals to support ongoing service delivery during the crisis.

Why This Approach Matters

In a protracted crisis like the one in Ukraine, caring for animals is inseparable from caring for people. Preventing disease in shelters and households helps protect public health, while supporting veterinarians, animal welfare groups, and farming families strengthens local capacity during a time of extreme strain. Animals also play a vital role in family life and emotional well-being, and protecting their health helps communities maintain stability, dignity, and hope amid ongoing conflict.

This was one of the largest attacks on the capital during the entire war.

❗️Kyiv is dealing with the aftermath of a massive Russian attack, the State Emergency Service reported.

Rescuers continue to work at the sites of strikes on civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.

⚡️Russia launched a massive combined overnight strike on Ukraine using 90 missiles and 600 drones of various types.

The main target of the attack was Kyiv.

According to preliminary data, as of 09:30, Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed 604 targets — 55 missiles and 549 drones of various types:

▪️11 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;

▪️44 Kh-101, Iskander-K, and Kalibr cruise missiles;

▪️549 enemy UAVs of various types.

As of 09:30, 16 missiles and 51 strike UAVs were recorded hitting targets at 54 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at 23 locations.

❗️At least 83 people were injured, and there are fatalities as a result of the Russian attack, President Zelenskyy said.

According to the president, Russia used about 90 missiles of various types, including 36 ballistic missiles, as well as around 600 drones. He noted that the highest number of strikes was recorded in Kyiv, the main target of the attack.

“Putin can’t even pronounce the word ‘hurray’ properly — he mumbles — and yet he still strikes residential buildings with his missiles,” President Zelenskyy said.

The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed the Oreshnik strike.

According to the ministry, Russian forces used the missile to strike what it described as Ukrainian “military command facilities,” along with Iskander, Kinzhal, and Zircon missiles.

Ukraine reported that the Oreshnik missile struck Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region. The exact location of the impact has not been disclosed.

Local authorities said that a garage cooperative and company buildings in the area were damaged.

🤔 Russia has likely increased production of Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missiles, according to Defense Express.

The publication noted that nearly a year passed between the first and second Oreshnik strikes on Ukraine, while only about 4.5 months elapsed between the second and third launches. Analysts say this could indicate a higher production rate of these medium-range ballistic missiles.

At the same time, Defense Express questioned the effectiveness of Oreshnik missiles in their conventional, non-nuclear configuration.

According to the publication, the most recent Oreshnik strike on Bila Tserkva reportedly hit a garage cooperative rather than the declared military target.

Defense Express also noted that previous Oreshnik strikes appeared to be largely demonstrative and psychological in nature — aimed at pressure and intimidation.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) struck three Russian vessels and military equipment in occupied Crimea.

Fighters from the SBU’s Alpha Special Operations Center carried out a coordinated operation on the temporarily occupied peninsula.

The following were hit:

▪️ A military vessel of an unspecified type

There are also reports of a possible strike on a Project 21980 Grachonok anti-sabotage boat.

Ukraine’s private air defense units have shot down a jet-powered Shahed drone for the first time, in the Kharkiv region, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said.

The private air defense project was launched by the government in November. It allows critical infrastructure companies to form their own air defense units under military command.

Fedorov previously reported the first intercepted drones (also in the Kharkiv region) on March 30. However, this is the first confirmed interception of a jet-powered drone, which was flying at speeds exceeding 400 km/h.

Private air defense units are currently being formed at 19 enterprises. They are integrated into the Air Force's unified command system and operate within the overall air defense architecture.

The Russian Federation has largely exhausted its economic reserves, and the macroeconomic situation has become more complicated than in previous years, said Maxim Reshetnikov.

Speaking at the All-Russian “My Business” forum in Vsevolozhsk, he noted that new taxes are placing an additional burden on entrepreneurs.

According to him, amid structural changes, some sectors are finding new opportunities, while others are forced to adapt or even scale back operations.

He stressed that the economy had previously managed to create jobs under relatively stable market conditions, when reserves were still available.

“Now, however, this margin of safety has largely been exhausted, and the situation has become more complex,” he said.

Russia is running out of money and running out of time. Per Jason Jay Smart, Putin has approximately 11 weeks of reserves.

Today, the world celebrates International Day for Monuments and Sites, a day dedicated to honoring and safeguarding global cultural heritage. For Ukraine, however, this day serves as a reminder of the many landmarks that have been destroyed by Russian attacks. Russia’s invasion has systematically targeted Ukraine’s cultural and historical sites in an attempt to erase Ukrainian identity.

Most of you are aware that my fiancée is in Odesa. I am still waiting for my documents to be processed to enter Ukraine. The Consulate in Kyiv said I can enter on my passport; however, there have been instances at the Moldovan border with Ukraine where border agents have denied US citizens entry.

My fiancée has been in the hospital for the past week, being treated for severe migraines. The treatments are injections and Botox. I receive very limited information due to poor internet and cell service. Below is a screenshot of the list of meds in Ukrainian. I can translate the list; however, I do not know and underestand there use. I will appreciate your help.

On February 24th, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. My world changed on that day. I wasn’t in Ukraine; however, I had friends in Ukraine and in Russia. Before the invasion, I decided I wanted a tattoo, not knowing exactly what I wanted or truly understanding why. Of course, I researched, came up with a few ideas, and reached out to a local artist. The process included an interview. She asked about my interests, where I have traveled, and my heritage. Yes, I am Sicilian. My grandparents immigrated from Messina. One question she asked struck a chord: "Are you religious?" My answer is no, not really. She suggested a painting of Archangel Michael. I had been to Rome and seen the painting, and I knew the significance. I chose Michael, or should I say, Michael chose me. The project began in the Fall of 2021.

Russia invades Ukraine. As I mentioned, I had friends in Russia, and I have friends in Ukraine. Pay attention, “ Had Friends” and “ Have Friends” . My Russian friends said this would end quickly, and my Ukrainian friends knew otherwise. When Russia did not take Kyiv in three days, there was no doubt Ukraine would fight for its freedom and country. Bucha, a city northwest of Kyiv, Ukraine, became a global symbol of atrocities after Russian forces occupied it in March 2022 and killed over 450 civilians before retreating. I watched the videos of men, women, and children being slaughtered in the streets by a horde of ruthless invaders. I called one of my friends in Russia and asked, have you seen this? Her response, this is propaganda. Our Russian Army would not do this.

In March of 2022, my friend in Kharkiv contacted me. She asked for help. The flat she owned did not have heat or electricity. I sent her what I could, knowing she was one of many who needed help. Today, she is in Odesa. One day, I will be in Odesa with her and my adopted family. The family has grown to include a friend of my fiancée and her son.

Melania Trump has, for the fourth time, accelerated the return of Ukrainian children deported by Russia, the White House said in a statement.

As a result, six more minors will return to their families in Ukraine.

It is also noted that another Ukrainian child will be returned to family members later this month.

I will not praise her efforts in bringing back six children, while Russia, a terrorist state, continues to deport innocent children from occupied areas in Ukraine.

The following are the current reported figures:

• Verified by Ukraine: Ukrainian authorities have officially verified the identities of 19,546 children who were forcibly deported or transferred to Russia, Belarus, or Russian-occupied territories.

• Independent Estimates: Groups like the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab (Yale HRL) estimate the true number of abducted children to be closer to 35,000.

• Russian Claims: Russian officials, including Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, have claimed that more than 700,000 children have been “relocated” to Russia since the start of the invasion, though they maintain these were for “safety” and not forcible.

• Ukrainian High-End Estimates: Daria Herasymchuk, Ukraine’s Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights, has stated the actual number of abducted children could reach between 200,000 and 300,000.

Key Facts and Efforts for Return

• Children Returned: As of early 2026, approximately 2,000 children have been successfully returned to Ukraine through various rescue initiatives, including the Bring Kids Back UA program and efforts by organizations such as Save Ukraine.

• Conditions in Russia: Abducted children are often placed in re-education camps or foster homes, where they are subjected to Russification, forced to adopt Russian citizenship, and, in some cases, undergo military training.

• International Legal Action: In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova for the war crime of unlawful deportation of children.

While the vast majority of documented deportations have been to Russia and Belarus, there have been reports and investigations into Ukrainian children being taken to other locations, most notably North Korea.

Reports from Ukrainian authorities and independent investigators as of April 2026 highlight several key destinations and claims:

• North Korea

  : At least two Ukrainian children (aged 12 and 16) were reportedly sent to the Songdowon International Children’s Camp.

• Russian-Occupied Territories: While not “foreign countries” in the eyes of international law, thousands of children are transferred to

  Crimea

  and other occupied regions of Ukraine for “re-education” and military training.

• Contested Claims (Turkey talks): During high-level negotiations, there have been claims that some children listed by Ukraine as abducted were actually located in European nations like Poland, Germany, France, and England. having fled as refugees rather than being forcibly deported. In February 2026, the National Police of Ukraine confirmed the location of 161 such children in

  Germany

  .

Yes, leading Russian state-owned energy and oil companies, specifically Gazprom and Rosneft, have been directly implicated in the systematic deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children.

Key Findings on Oil Industry Involvement

A March 2025 report from the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) provided the first definitive evidence of these companies’ critical roles:

• Funding and Logistics: Gazprom and Rosneft facilitated the transfer and “re-education” of at least 2,158 children from occupied regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia) between 2022 and 2025.

• Company-Owned Camps: Researchers identified at least six camps used for indoctrination that were either directly owned by Gazprom subsidiaries or sponsored by Rosneft.

• Militarized Indoctrination: At these facilities, such as the Prometey camp, children were subjected to pro-Russian propaganda and military training, including hand-to-hand combat and weapons handling.

• Corporate Vouchers: These companies financed the abductions by providing over 1,000 “vouchers” that enabled the transport of children to these camps at no cost to the state.

Economic and Political Context

• Sanctions Evasion: While the parent companies are sanctioned, approximately 80% of the subsidiaries and trade unions involved in these transfers are not currently under U.S. or EU sanctions.

• International Outrage: U.S. lawmakers have cited these findings to call for the reinstatement of full sanctions on the Russian oil sector, arguing that these companies are “willing accomplices” in war crimes.

• U.S. Market Exposure: Recent reports highlight that, due to temporary U.S. sanctions waivers aimed at stabilizing global oil prices, these companies may be profiting from U.S. consumer spending while simultaneously funding child deportations.
