I should also mention it was my birthday on Saturday, so we had a lot going on this weekend. Overall, this past month has been pretty low-key, so it was nice to have a busy one.

Friday
Started the day meeting a friend for breakfast at S&P. We have an annual catch-up there once a year. I normally go for the pastrami and eggs with a peanut butter bacon sandwich for dessert, but today I went with a BEC on white toast.

After breakfast I walked over to the new Uniqlo in Union Square to pick up a fresh white T-shirt for Saturday. I absolutely love their T-shirts. They don’t last super long...or I just get them gross really quickly. You decide!

I then stopped by Sephora to pick up a fresh eyebrow pencil and to select my birthday gift from the Beauty Insider! While I was there, I suddenly realized I needed to get a deck started for work (yikes), so I headed home.

Right before I headed home, I stopped into Goods for the Study because I had bought some vintage pens on eBay as one of the prizes for tomorrow, only to discover they were all dried out.

Luckily, they had the perfect replacements for only $5. Fun fact, it is very easy to replace the ink in a pen.

After a few hours at my desk, I walked over to Magnolia to pick up dessert for the following day.

The dessert? Forty small banana puddings.

For what?

My birthday party!

They told me to arrive at 2, but with the work interruption I didn’t get there until just before 4, only to learn they still weren’t ready. I asked what would’ve happened if I had actually shown up at 2. They apologized with a complimentary drink and offered me any treat I wanted. Considering I’d already been eating dessert multiple times a day (birthday week!), I somehow managed to pass.

Carried the puddings home and got to work on the party.

This year’s party favor was a little cookie box with four cookies inside. My mom and I decided that I would handle the chocolate chip cookies and the coconut cookies from City Bakery (RIP).

I had prepped the chocolate chip dough a week earlier but still needed to make the coconut cookies. After baking about 90 cookies, I was finally able to turn off the oven.

Before I started baking, I stopped by the venue to drop off a few things: my speaker (for trivia), decorations, a tote bag filled with loose supplies I might need (scissors, tape, etc.), and the prizes.

Party tip! Always find ways to make the day of easier. In this case, I figured out how much I could deliver in advance so I’d have less to carry the next day. Some people might prefer doing one big trip, but when you’re by yourself it’s often much more manageable to make a few smaller deliveries.

Ended the night going over my to-do list for the next day. Another party tip: write down everything you need to do. It’s the only way to make sure you don’t forget something.

Saturday
Wake up! It’s your birthday!

I did and got right to work.

I normally host a birthday dinner, but this year I decided to do a lunch. Why not take advantage of my birthday falling on a Saturday?

9A: First thing on the to-do list: pack the cookies and gather the final things I needed for the party.

10A: I needed to sign for the balloons, which were scheduled to be delivered to the venue by 1030, so I was waiting to get the call that they were on the way.

Then I had a thought: Let’s just go now and drop off the cookies and wait there instead of rushing over/worry about being late once I get the call.

Again, always think of ways to make your day easier.

Dropped off the cookies, walked to the bank to get cash for tips, then stopped into CVS to grab an extra roll of Scotch tape so we wouldn’t have to keep passing one roll back and forth. Again, always look for little ways to make the day easier, even if it costs a few extra dollars. In this case, it was about $3. She’s rich!

Waited in the park until I got the call that the balloons had arrived, handed them off, and headed home.

11A: Fixed my hair and got myself ready.

That’s when it happened.

The monsoon.

We knew it was going to rain. We just didn’t know it was really going to rain.

12P: I walked over to the party wearing a plastic bonnet over my hair and a trench coat that was completely soaked by the end of the eight-minute walk.

My family graciously arrived early and, unfortunately, they were all a bit wet too. We each had jobs to do and quietly worked our way through the setup, mostly because we were all stressed about the weather.

You can do everything right and still have something unexpected happen, which is exactly why I always try to get as much done ahead of time as possible. It gives you room to deal with the speed bumps.

1P: Guests began arriving at Mighty Quinn’s, where I was hosting the BBQ lunch (Western wear encouraged!).

Sadly, the storm caused a lot of delays. Some of my friends even received emergency alerts telling them not to leave their homes.

But...what if you have a birthday party to get to?

The party wrapped up around 4P, the energy was great and the staff was so helpful! By 5P I was home for night as my family had given me a ride to my storage unit to drop off my speaker before helping me bring the rest of my supplies home.

My birthday ended the moment I walked through my apartment door. I was exhausted. I put everything back where it belonged, wrote thank-you notes to everyone who had so thoughtfully brought a gift, and called it a night.

Sunday
Left the house at 11, starting with an Amazon return at Whole Foods.

Another party tip! Wrap everything up as soon as possible. You’ll want your life to go back to normal, and the easiest way to do that is to treat the next day as the final item on the party to-do list.

Walked up to Gramercy, then hopped on the bus to Bloomingdale’s. My friend got us tickets to the 215 showing of The Odyssey, so we planned to wander around Bloomingdale’s beforehand, followed by lunch at Forty Carrots (obviously).

Tried on some shoes for fun, with the highlights being...

Got to the theater at 155 only to discover our tickets were actually for Village East, not Cinema 123.

We jumped into a taxi and, thankfully, caught mostly green lights on the way downtown.

We made it with enough time to use the bathroom and grab snacks before settling in for the three-hour movie.

The film was as epic as you could imagine. I kept thinking to myself that not a single scene looked like a fun day of shooting.

This goes without saying, but I strongly recommend seeing it in theaters. It’s an experience.

We left with a few comments, but overall really enjoyed it. I also found it to be one of the easiest Nolan films to follow—if that’s something you struggle with. Or maybe that’s just me. Please do not ask me what happened in Interstellar or Oppenheimer after the bombing.

Walked home, repeatedly saying, “What a beautiful day,” to no one in particular.

As I made my way through the neighborhood, I caught the final ten minutes of the World Cup Final at a local restaurant, where I bumped into a friend who also lives nearby.

Spent the rest of the evening at home watching Rear Window, a personal favorite since it takes place in my neighborhood and feels like the perfect New York summer movie.

• The Fly, Roast Chicken

Where have I been?! Honestly, nowhere. Feel like Kelly Taylor would be really disappointed with me.

The past few weekends have been super chill (still lovely), and by Sunday I’ve been too lazy to put together a recap. I don’t know–blame the sun!

Some highlights from the past few weekends:

• Friday, June 13: Went to a nightlight(?!) exhibit at The Future Perfect showroom.

• Saturday, June 14: Walked by City Hall where I found leftover orange and blue confetti in the bushes. I grabbed a few pieces to get framed. Reminder: “Art can be anything” - Chelsea Baken

• Saturday, June 21: Went to the beach for a birthday party and received two summer blessings:

  • Saw multiple dolphins in the water. Yes, multiple!

  • Found a crab just hanging out along the shore and, seeing as it was the first day of Cancer season, I took it as a positive sign for the year ahead. So naturally, I said a little prayer to the crab. (For those who don’t know, my birthday also falls during Cancer season.)

• Weekend of June 28: Spent the weekend in Westchester with my family enjoying some time outside.

Friday
I was meeting my friends in Brooklyn at 930 to head down to the beach. I sent a text at 845 to confirm we were still on, only to get a reply that they were having car trouble.

While I waited, I put together a quick deck for work (she does it all) before getting another text letting me know the beach wasn’t happening.

Since I was already in my swimsuit, I decided to head over to my pool instead.

I don’t need to be the 50th person to tell you how hot it was this weekend, but after about an hour I decided maybe this wasn’t worth it. I really enjoy going, but when I’m there by myself I can’t tune out everyone else’s conversations and inevitably become way too invested (irritated) in whatever nonsense is happening around me.

Headed home and worked on a few things for my upcoming birthday. It was the kind of heat that made you want to be inside anyway.

Stopped by the grocery store and gasped when I saw one of my all-time favorite ice cream flavors: Jeni’s Watermelon Taffy. I thought it was a limited release back in 2024, so seeing it back on the shelf felt like spotting an old friend.

It’s the perfect summer treat–a creamy, tangy watermelon sorbet with just the right amount of sour. I genuinely can’t get enough of it. And somehow it’s also the most beautiful shade of pink. I can’t recommend it enough.

After spending the day at home, I decided to take myself to the movies. Before heading to the theater, I walked over to Madison Square Park for a Shake Shack hot dog (they’re very good!) The park was practically empty, but I had to make sure I got a holiday dog.

I saw the 715 showing of The Invite. It was incredibly entertaining–lots of laughs and surprises. It was also just a nice film to watch. Great production design, beautifully shot, and well edited. The cast was excellent, although I have to admit I wasn’t entirely convinced by Edward Norton. A firefighter? I don’t think so.

I came out of the theater to tree branches scattered all over the sidewalk. I guess it rained...a lot? I had fomo!

Saturday
Spent the morning at home until I needed to leave the house at 215. Before meeting my friend, I stopped into Gristedes to pick up one of my go-to party contributions: a case of Capri Suns.

Whenever I’m going to a party (especially one where I don’t know many people), I bring them for three reasons:

1. They’re usually a conversation starter. “Who brought the Capri Suns?!”

2. I don’t often drink alcohol, and I don’t drink anything carbonated, so they’re my little security blanket.

3. After a few drinks, people inevitably start reaching for them…they get pretty excited.

Met my friend on the subway platform and we headed over to Clinton Hill. A friend of hers was hosting a holiday BBQ, and I was happy to accompany her.

There was a massive spread of homemade salads, all elevated takes on the classics–pasta salad, potato salad and such. And goes without saying freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs.

I mainly stayed out on the deck because it wasn’t too crowded, so I could comfortably sit and chat. Which, to be honest, is my ideal position at any gathering, including weddings: a chair and a conversation.

The highlight of the party was one of the desserts–which isn’t shocking to anyone who knows me enough on its own, but that’s not even the surprising part.

Someone had taken break-and-bake sugar cookie dough, pressed it into a sheet pan like a giant cookie cake, topped it with canned vanilla frosting, and finished it with strawberries.

I thought, that sounds inedible.

So, naturally, I politely took a slice. It was fantastic.

Then I kept going back for tiny slivers. I have been thinking about her all Sunday.

After the party, we walked over to another friend’s apartment because she has a view of downtown. I wasn’t sure we’d be able to see much of the fireworks, but luckily we could. Downtown Brooklyn blocked part of the skyline but I guess you could say it was giving authenticity.

One year I’d really like to watch them from the Manhattan Bridge, curious what time someone needs to go to get a spot. Comment below.

A fun bonus was all the neighborhood fireworks being set off around us. Some of them felt like they were practically exploding right overhead.

Sunday
Stayed home (the solid grey skies were a real vibe killer) and did some birthday prep (all will be revealed soon!) while binging Running Point. Very cute, I like it a lot better than Mindy’s new show NSFW.

Bites of the week:

• Short Rib Taco, Taco Lane (a new taco spot on 13th btwn 5 + University, they need customers, the tacos were delicious!)

That’s not exactly a unique observation. Plenty of people have talked about how united they’ve felt with the city during this run, and I’m not trying to claim that I needed it more than anyone else. But it’s something I’ve never experienced before, and I’m genuinely grateful to have finally felt it.

What is it like to love a team your whole life? How do you believe that every year this could be one? How does it feel to watch an entire town gather around a sport every Friday night?

I’ve never known that feeling, and I’ve always been jealous of people who do.

Growing up in Westchester meant we never really had a team that everyone rallied around. My town didn’t revolve around Friday night football. Maybe one or two students a year were recruited to a D1 school, but sports were never the center of our community.

In many ways, I’m grateful for that. It created a more well-rounded environment. But whenever I watched Friday Night Lights, all I wanted was that life. A town united by a team. It seemed so simple and, honestly, kind of beautiful.

Yes, I’m sure there’s plenty of darkness that comes with places that put sports on a pedestal, but let a girl dream while she’s watching her show.

I wanted that connection–the unspoken agreement that everyone was invested in the same thing, all at once.

So naturally, because I was starving for that sense of community, I chose to attend a tiny design school in New York City. No sports. No campus. Not even a library.

I’d visit friends at what I lovingly called “real colleges,” where Saturdays revolved around the game.

One personal highlight was experiencing the infamous Duke tailgates. Fun fact: they didn’t even go to the game there…

Those weekends scratched the itch. They made me long for that version of community–the experience of being tucked away on a campus, in the middle of nowhere, sharing an identity and a routine with thousands of other people during that brief but important chapter of life.

It doesn’t help right now that I also recently watched Rooster and Off-Campus which both take place in small college towns. How cozy!

But alas, I always got back on the plane. My community wasn’t gathered in a stadium; it was the fellow interns passing around a spare Milk Bar cookie in the hallway of Condé Nast.

Sure, during that time the Giants won a Super Bowl, and the Yankees definitely won a World Series. But not everyone is a Yankees or Giants fan. Those victories belonged to millions of New Yorkers, but they never felt universal. There were moments of camaraderie–parades, commercials, conversations, but you could easily miss them if you weren’t actively looking. They never seemed to take over the city in the way I imagined a true sports town would. And yes, New York City obviously has a lot going on besides athletics…

Just two years ago, I spent a weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to experience college football at the University of Alabama, and it was one of the most eye-opening and joyful weekends of my life.

What stuck with me most was how people greeted each other and ended conversations with “Roll Tide.” It wasn’t just a slogan; it felt like a shared language, a universal truth everyone had agreed upon.

At a time when everything is so divided, I found myself completely immersed in a town united by a single identity. Here I was, in a state I don’t necessarily align myself with, captivated by a community that seemed to speak its own language. And for one weekend, I got to be part of it.

I even held a Crimsonette baton. It was incredible.

For a long time, I wanted to find a football team to call my own. I wanted my own version of “Roll Tide”–something that felt woven into my identity.

After years of trying out different teams, I landed on the Buffalo Bills, which have become a big part of my fall. A major reason was that I was looking for connection. Many of my closest friends had left the city, and I found myself with more and more empty windows in my schedule. I started watching games simply because it was a fun way to pass the time.

Now I spend Sundays either at home or at a Bills bar. More often than not, I’d text friends and beg them to come along so I wouldn’t have to sit there alone. There is still a real sense of community, especially after a big play when the entire bar erupts in celebration. But walking home afterward, I’d often still feel that familiar pit of isolation.

Yet everything changed this spring.

We had all felt the energy building during last year’s playoff run, and the fact that the Knicks seemed destined for another run brought a growing excitement to the city. The air was slowly beginning to change.

Then it exploded.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. The city transformed. Everyone, including myself, had merch on for every game (no surprise that I love school/team merch). I even bought a new hat after the “Trump loss” because it felt like we all needed a fresh start.

Storefronts of every kind were suddenly covered in orange and blue merchandise but also custom vinyl graphics plastered across entire storefronts. I couldn’t help but laugh at how quickly these marketing teams managed to get approvals. So you can get approval in 24 hours?!

Sorry, back to what’s important.

Everyone was doing the same thing. I was seeing friends on Monday evenings then again on Wednesday! I was once in Soho before a game and the entire neighborhood felt deserted because everyone was doing the exact same thing: watching the game.

And then we started ending conversations with “Knicks in 4 then to 5”

We had our own language, just like in Alabama.

Bodegas blasted the game out onto the street for people who didn’t make it to the bar. The city was silent when the game looked intense. Thousands of people flooded the entire length of Seventh Avenue. Everywhere you looked, the city finally seemed to be rallying around the same thing. I hadn’t felt this since Obama won and it was such a delight that this time it had nothing to do with politics.

Like everyone else in this city, this year has felt like a fresh start. In many ways, the story of this team felt like a reflection of New York itself. They weren’t carried by a single hero–they were a true team, winning by working together.

I don’t know how long this feeling will last, but after 36 years, I finally got to experience something I’d been searching for.

A city united behind one thing. A shared language. A sense of belonging.
And it was everything I hoped it would be.

Minus the explosives.

I am writing this from jail! Things got a little out of control on Saturday – who could blame me?

Ugh, obviously none of that is true, but it would have been cool.

Welcome to NYC 2.0! I can’t recall hearing a single car horn all Sunday. Suddenly taxis are $7 again, the Village is full of creative bohemians, and the bus is always on time.

Before we get into Saturday evening, let’s talk about everything else.

Friday
I don’t know if anyone else felt this way, but between the heat and the energy of the city, this weekend really felt like the first weekend of summer to me.

Although I would appreciate the temperature dropping about 20 degrees because we are technically still in spring. And I don’t know about you, but I really don’t enjoy seeing that it’s 20 degrees above average for any given day.

By Friday, I embraced the heat.

I caught up on work in the morning, then spent the afternoon at my gym’s rooftop pool. We’ve talked about her before and I just love it. It’s peaceful (no guests or music) and I feel incredibly lucky to have somewhere I can cool off during the summer.

I did some reading, got a little restless and hungry, so I left around 245.

Stopped by another new Swedish candy store: Vannest. Yes, we are currently in a Swedish candy crisis, but this one might be my favorite.

The selection was fantastic – they even had these mini Nerds Rope-type candies I tried back in December that were somehow better than the original. The space itself was also beautifully designed so thank you for that.

As I mentioned, something about the weather put me in a very specific mood and I decided I needed a summer lunch. So on my walk home I stopped at Luke’s Lobster for a lobster roll. A place I haven’t been to in maybe 10 years.

I was the only person there, alone; on a Friday afternoon.
She is living, everyone.

Took a work call midway through the roll, headed home, and sent one final email.

I wanted a quiet night in because there has been a lot of socializing lately thanks to the Finals. Is everyone else exhausted being out until midnight twice a week?

I was watching the game at a friend’s apartment the following night and wanted to bring dessert, so I went with something easy: Rice Krispy Treats. I added a little Knicks flair with blue and orange sprinkles plus mini M&M’s (the true hero of the M&M family).

Followed by me finishing Season 6 of my Girls rewatch. I feel like half of New York did the same thing after reading Lena’s book. I hate season 6 because, I like many, was so disappointed by the Hannah pregnancy plot line. Oh! The young woman finally gets her life together because she had a baby! She did it! I find the baby at the end of any plot such a cliche. Give me something else!

Saturday
Started my day with canceled afternoon plans, so I felt eager to do something on such a gorgeous day.

I decided to venture out on a Citi Bike. My route was going to be the southern perimeter of Manhattan, starting around 20th Street.

The first half, along the West Side Highway, was an absolute dream. Not crowded, gorgeous light, perfect weather.

By the time I got down to Battery Park, it became a total nightmare. Tourists were wandering in every direction, often directly into the bike path. Also, this Battery Park construction feels endless. After finally making it through, the route abruptly ends because of the East River Park construction.

Note: do not do this route.

I was getting frustrated by the constant detours and uncertainty on the East Side bike path, so I decided to make a last-minute detour into Brooklyn. I rode my old favorite route over the Manhattan Bridge and, while crossing, decided to continue through the Navy Yard, down Kent, and back over the Williamsburg Bridge. She was on a e-bike so this ride was obviously effortless.

This route is hardly a secret, but it’s a favorite for a reason. The roads are usually quiet, the bike path is wide, and most importantly, it’s completely flat.

Biked back into Manhattan and headed home for a short rest.

Later I was on my way to Soho for a hair appointment when I noticed a festival happening in Washington Square Park. Naturally my first thought was: I bet they have face paint.

Specifically, I thought I could get an orange-and-blue tiger painted on my face for the Knicks.

Why the face paint? Because I feel beautiful in face paint. What an absolute delight to suddenly have a mystical portrait appear on your face in the middle of an otherwise ordinary day.

As I got closer, I realized it was a Hare Krishna festival and began wondering if a face-paint tent would still be involved.

Lo and behold, there was one.

Unfortunately, the designs were significantly more festival-appropriate than what I had envisioned. Mostly hand painting. My tiger dream was officially dead.

After my blowout, I headed home to get ready for the game.

I felt conflicted about my plans for the evening.

Part of me wanted the giant crowd experience because it felt historic. But I also know myself. I’m too short to see anything, I don’t want to stand for five hours, and every person within a ten-foot radius would annoy me.

What I really wanted was a giant crowd that somehow remained quiet except during important moments, outdoors, with plenty of seating and perfect sightlines.

So, impossible.

A friend was hosting an outdoor viewing in Prospect Heights, so I got off at Grand Army Plaza, home to my favorite fountain in all of New York. I walked over and said a prayer for the game.

Later my friend asked what I had said to God. I told her I wasn’t praying to God. I was praying to the city of New York.

We watched the incredibly tense game outside on a giant projector while hearing neighboring buildings react to the exact same moments. I think we all know what happened by the end! Screams were shouted. Everyone was in disbelief.

It also felt slightly anticlimactic with the game being on the road. I was hoping for orange and blue confetti. But none of that really matters. I could not be happier for this team or for the fans who have been waiting their entire lives for this moment.

Afterwards we hit the streets looking for a little more energy but never quite found the crowd we wanted. Note: it was not on Flatbush or Atlantic - turns out is was an avenue over on Lafayette. Eventually we split up, with me heading back into Manhattan.

Instead I wandered through the chaos of the West Village and honestly felt pretty good about my decision.

The crowds confirmed why I shouldn’t watch there: Sweet Caroline blasting from portable speakers, people climbing on things they shouldn’t be climbing on (that was cute), and trash absolutely everywhere. The garbage was upsetting me so much that I actually asked a group of police officers if they needed volunteer trash collectors.

They looked at me like I was insane.

I headed home around 130, partly because I was alone and had seen enough and partly because I was eager to see all the videos from around the city.

Sunday
Super low-key day, mostly spent consuming content from the night before.

I eventually forced myself out for a walk only to discover it was incredibly humid.

I headed over to the East Village to try a sandwich at Compton’s. I originally wanted something built around a chicken cutlet, but by the time I got there I couldn’t fathom eating anything hot, so I pivoted to the tuna. Which was lovely!

On the way there I passed an adorable brand new taco spot called Tacos Domingo.

Spent the rest of the day at home working on my birthday party, which is right around the corner(-ish.) More to come!

Bites of the week:

• Dry-Fried Green Beans w. Minced Pork, Uncle Lou

The bagel was too big, too sweet, and the dough never really came together. Also, the blue coloring bled into the cream cheese and I did not appreciate that.

Took a few work calls at home and by the time it was 2PM it felt too late to really do anything before my evening plans.

Headed out around 4, starting with a very necessary trip to Manolo Blahnik. They had just released a gingham collection and I needed to see it in person. I think it is safe to say I was the first person to ever wear a Knicks jersey inside that store.

Then I hopped on the bus further uptown and immediately found myself in a situation.

An older woman was loudly gossiping with her friend on speakerphone while another elderly woman with a walker couldn’t understand the bus driver, who was trying to explain how to position herself so he could put the ramp down. She kept missing what he was saying, he was losing patience, so I ended up helping her off the bus. Hey sir! This city is coming together right now, she clearly cannot understand you.

The speakerphone woman thanked me, then spent the next few stops asking me questions about how the NYC bus system works. When I say system I mean, questions like, ‘how do you know what stop is next?’

My friend and I were meeting uptown to watch the Knicks game and it quickly became a disaster. Everywhere was fully booked. My enthusiasm began fading rapidly. I told her this would be the last time I came uptown for a game.

We eventually found a spot outside, only to learn they didn’t serve food. Fine, we’ll order delivery. Denied from everywhere! Too much demand.

At that point I had completely lost my will to do anything and grabbed an objectively bad slice across the street.

The pizza place was chaos. I happened to be standing next to the same girls who were sitting next to us at the bar, and I took it upon myself to ask the team (a few times) what was happening. It took more than ten minutes to get a single slice.

I finally got it, walked back over while ranting about the experience to our area, and immediately watched the slice slide off the plate and onto the sidewalk. It was at this moment I was sure the Knicks and myself were going to have a bad night.

A few minutes later, the girls I had suffered alongside in the pizza shop walked over. I told them my slice had fallen on the ground and they said, “Oh yeah, we know. He [motioning to one of their boyfriends] texted us.”

Then they handed me a fresh slice. I almost cried. Perhaps the Knicks would have a good night?

The game started and we discovered the outdoor TVs weren’t going to have sound, leaving us with the commentary of a drunk man who believed he was doing an excellent job filling in.

After halftime, and with the bar shutting down outdoor service at 10, we headed back to my friend’s apartment to finish the game.

I don’t need to recap what happened, but as someone with very few stakes beyond the dignity of my city, it was not a pretty game, but they managed to win by the skin of their teeth.

Afterwards I walked over to Fifth and took the bus home because at that hour it’s essentially a three-dollar cab.

Once home, I spent the rest of the night watching all the footage pouring in from around the city (and apparently East Hampton too) of people celebrating.

I know everyone keeps saying this, but I honestly haven’t felt this much civic pride in a long time.

The best thing about New York has always been the sense of community, and right now it feels unstoppable.

Even the team itself feels like a very New York story. A collection of castoffs, trades, overlooked pieces, experienced players brought together from all over, coming together to become possible champions!

Saturday
Started my morning waiting outside Empire Cake. The second the doors opened, I walked in and asked for their 6-inch raspberry lemon cake.

I was heading to New Jersey to meet my friend’s new baby and it had been her birthday the day before. How could I possibly show up without a birthday cake? What am I, a farmer?

Took the subway down to South Ferry and hopped on the Seastreak to Highlands, New Jersey. We love a ferry. What a beautiful mode of transportation.

Speaking of beauty, the girl behind me had her feet propped up on the seat next to me.

After a few side glances, I realized she wasn’t getting the hint, so I turned around, looked at her chipped nail polish, and said, “Do you mind?”

Her feet quickly disappeared while her boyfriend quietly informed her that this outcome was inevitable.

Have we lost all dignity?

Got picked up at the dock and spent the afternoon on a front porch with a newborn asleep in the crook of my elbow. And yes, we cut into the cake.

Headed home on the 730 ferry after some beachside pizza, only to discover it was absolutely pouring in the city.

Once we docked, I used my backpack to shield my hair and took a much longer route home to minimize my time outside in the rain.

Ended the night watching fireworks (?!) outside my window at 11. Anything is possible!

Sunday
It was another friend’s birthday and every year her close friends very generously host us in a box at a Yankees game.

Personally, I love it because there’s bottomless everything, but more importantly, the view of the crowd is spectacular. I often spend half the game taking photos of the stadium or trying to get on the Jumbotron. (Pro tip: it is very hard to get on the Jumbotron from a suite.)

Got offered a ride by a couple who own a car and live a few blocks away. When I went to meet them, my friend greeted me with an Uncrustable.

Announcement: this is how I would like to be greeted by all friends moving forward.

We got to the game with zero traffic and enjoyed a gorgeous day at the stadium. The highlight, without question, was the ice cream drumstick. I went in with low expectations and was genuinely blown away by how good it was.

After the game we drove over to Arthur Avenue for dinner at Dominick’s with the birthday girl and her family. I personally requested the penne vodka and it was absolutely demolished (I mean, greatest pasta of all time.)

At one point my friend made sure to announce to the entire table that I wanted everyone to know my dish had been fully eaten.

Mortifying. But also funny.

Home by 8 to spend the evening doomscrolling videos about Trump ruining tomorrow because he is a total narcissistic loser.

Let’s have a good week. Knicks in four!

As you read last week, I spent the weekend in Portland because I actually needed to be out west for this weekend. Back in January, some friends and I decided we were going to see BTS in Vegas. Once the tickets were secured, I figured I might as well turn the whole thing into a proper west coast trip – which is how Portland finally happened.

After Portland, I flew down to LA for the week to catch up with friends, revisit favorite spots, and take a few meetings.

Enough about the week though – let’s get into the weekend.

Friday
BS (Before Substack), I used to travel to LA constantly. Working in advertising had me out there throughout the year. But my last few productions have all shot in New York, so I really haven’t had a reason to go lately. As I mentioned above though, this felt like the right time to make a visit.

I had Friday off from work, so I was actually able to enjoy the full day. I was also very responsible and stayed on east coast hours while I was there. And to be clear, my version of east coast hours is waking up at 7A PT… which is 10A EST.

I continued that streak Friday morning by waking up early and forcing myself into some movement. I hiked Runyon Canyon and luckily it was overcast, which made the incline significantly more tolerable. The views, however, were not exactly delivering.

Afterwards I walked over to Equinox for a class, then headed back to the hotel where I enjoyed toast and fruit in bed. And yes, when I placed the room service order I specifically requested an assortment of jams.

I stayed at Sunset Tower, which remains one of my favorite hotels. Are there “better” hotels? Sure. But there’s something about her. The energy is deeply alluring. I’ve also stayed there over 200 nights at this point, so I know the staff and the space well enough that it genuinely feels like another home.

I had an appointment at Wi Spa at 130 – a Korean spa in KTown – only to discover they had never confirmed the booking. I called and they said they could squeeze me in at 5 instead. Missing Wi Spa was not an option, so I rearranged the rest of my day around it.

To kill time I stopped by The Grove for one of my favorite strawberry frosted doughnuts from Bob’s Coffee and Donuts, then made myself a bag of sour candy at Dylan’s to enjoy during the flights and downtime later this weekend.

After that I visited a friend on the east side. She lives in one of those unbelievable California bungalow homes perched on a hill that genuinely makes you question the laws of physics.

Then: Wi Spa.

This place is always a mandatory stop for me in LA. I love a bathhouse and it’s one of the best ways to decompress after work travel. You wash off, rotate through the baths, and everything seems to just wash away.

I was sitting in one of the baths reading Lena Dunham’s memoir when another woman stopped to ask what part I was on. This happened multiple times over the week.

After soaking for a while I got a body scrub treatment. If you’ve never had one: a woman essentially scrapes every bit of dead skin off your body. It’s incredible and deeply humbling.

At one point I started quietly laughing while lying on the table — partially because the sensation is oddly ticklish, but also because I looked around and saw women of every age, shape, and size stretched out on these little slabs while another human calmly exfoliated us like we were in some sort of communal morgue spa hybrid.

And honestly? It reminded me how absurdly hard we are on ourselves and our bodies. In that room everyone just looked… human. Existing. I always leave places like that feeling softer toward myself. I’ll let Emma Thompson take it from here.

Afterwards I went to Drybar for a blowout. I’ve said this before, but if you’re someone who regularly blows out your hair, getting one while traveling is a great way to avoid packing all the tools.

My dinner plans ended up getting canceled, so I took myself to La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills for a caesar salad followed by spaghetti and meatballs.

Saturday
My friend graciously offered to drive me to the airport, so I thanked her with a coffee and doughnut from Randy’s before heading to LAX and flying off to Vegas.

Okay, I don’t know if I’ve said this here before, but I believe Vegas is the most beautiful city in the world. There is truly nothing like it. Such spectacle. You can be or see absolutely anything you want. The lights, the old signs, the strange charm of downtown – I love it all.

Sure, is it slightly horrifying seeing someone chain-smoking at a slot machine at 11A? Absolutely. But there’s also something deeply beautiful about sitting poolside next to an unlimited crab leg tower before heading off to a magic show an hour later.

Landed around noon and enjoyed the bliss of a 14-minute drive to the hotel (another pro). I stayed at the Four Seasons which sounds far fancier than it actually was. It’s attached to Mandalay Bay and honestly ended up cheaper than some other options. The main draw was that it was directly across from the stadium. Plus I used my Amex hotel credit. Still can never decide if that thing is worth it.

Also: if you need to go to Vegas but aren’t really a Vegas person, I highly recommend this setup. The Four Seasons section is very quiet, there’s no casino, and it’s tucked away from most of the chaos while still being less than ten minutes from the airport. Con: the breakfast buffet is mid.

Before the trip, a friend from Vegas told me about “the Vegas sandwich” – you hand over your ID and credit card at check-in with a folded $20 bill hidden in the middle to try to secure an upgrade.

I did exactly that.

The woman at the desk continued her hotel speech, returned my cards, informed me there were no upgrades available…and kept the $20 without even acknowledging it.

A reminder: the house always wins.

Already defeated, I changed into a sleeveless top because it was 96 degrees and headed out to explore. I spent most of the afternoon photographing old signs, abandoned motels, and downtown corners I hadn’t seen before. I love that side of Vegas.

At one point I was absolutely melting and stopped at Luv-It Frozen Custard. They rotate flavors daily – I sampled cookie dough and mango (both great) but ultimately went classic vanilla. Sat on the curb in the shade watching a pigeon cool itself under a parked car.

After the heat became unbearable I headed back to the hotel and immediately got in the pool.

Like many people right now, I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed by the general state of everything. While floating in the pool I was admiring a dad playing around with his daughter while reading the chapter in Lena Dunham’s memoir where she realizes she’s falling in love with Jack, and suddenly Lovely Day started playing overhead.

And I thought: okay… maybe today will be one.

While waiting for my friends to arrive, I took myself to dinner at Carbone Riviera, their new location overlooking the Bellagio fountains. Listen – I am a complete sucker for this setup. Dinner and fountain shows? Say no more.

I ordered the scallops and the waiter gently informed me that would not be enough food, so I begrudgingly added the rigatoni vodka. I hadn’t had it in years and honestly? I ate the whole thing. It was excellent.

Went back to the hotel for some quiet time before heading out again.

Started the night at Frankie’s Tiki Room off the Strip. Fun fact: I love tiki bars. Which should surprise absolutely no one because they’re usually old, themed, and everything tastes like punch.

I chatted with a friendly couple next to me who insisted I needed to go to Burning Man (they attend every year). I replied with: Oh, hmm I don’t know. I don’t really like the feeling of dirt on me.

Eventually I met up with my friends at Park MGM where – for the first time ever – I gambled.

That’s right everyone. She risked it all.

Meaning: I put $100 down at the craps table and somehow walked away with $570.

She can retire!

No but seriously, I had a blast. My dice were HOT. The whole table was cheering. I think I loved it because craps feels oddly communal – for instance, if I rolled a ten, we all won money. How fun is that?

At one point I asked how everyone was doing and the table applauded. Then before my next roll I shouted “WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!” followed immediately by saying: “High School Musical!” as the dice landed on the winning number and the entire table erupted.

Honestly? A star is born.

Once I got over $500 I decided to walk away (one of those $100s was a tip from the guy next to me, in fact, he said if kindness was on the table she’d be a billionaire!) I really enjoyed playing around the $25–$50 range because it felt exciting/easy without becoming terrifying.

I also tried roulette and hated it. You lose money way too quickly. Not for me.

Then I tried a slot machine and was shocked to discover you don’t stop the reels yourself – you just press a button and the machine decides?! The screen made me nauseous.

No card games for me because I still have no idea how to play them. But I’m eager to learn! Learning any type of card game has been a goal for a few years.

We wandered through a few more casinos and by 2 I was exhausted, my sandal straps were cutting into my toes, and I could no longer tolerate the cigarette smoke, so I headed home.

Sunday
Started the day walking around the Arts District. I wanted to try this slightly tacky bakery because their funfetti cake videos keep appearing on my feed and I felt obligated to experience it for myself.

We had a brunch reservation at 1215, so I decided to walk there. Along the way I popped into antique stores, admired a few more wedding chapels, and then rushed over to the Wynn.

While walking, I overheard a full argument between a group of girls in bikinis heading to a day party. By the fourth traffic light they had resolved things, but I guarantee another fight will break out poolside by 230.

Met my friends at the Wynn and let me tell you – she is the one.

The opulence, the flowers, the scale of everything. Over-the-top, yes, but somehow less ridiculous than Caesars or Bellagio. I was completely sold. If I come back to Vegas, I’m staying there.

The buffet was absolutely out of control. Endless options, both good and questionable. Everyone’s plates looked completely different. My favorite breakfast item was this breakfast tostada situation, and my favorite dessert was a made-to-order s’more plus this slightly junky Almond Joy cookie that I took two for the road in a wrapped napkin and shoved into my purse.

Pro tip: make a reservation. The standby line looked at least two hours long.

We had the afternoon free, so a group of us went to Topgolf. The walk there was excruciating. The heat, the crowds, the complete lack of pedestrian-friendly street crossings – I was losing it.

Luckily an hour at the driving range revived everyone. I even won the first round of Topgolf which, honestly, is a game much better suited for people who don’t hit especially far.

PS: I had been carrying that slice of funfetti cake since 11.

We split up and I raced back to the hotel for one hour at the pool followed by a mandatory “towel/garbage time reset with AC” session before the show.

Then it was finally time to reunite with Jimin.

Have we discussed BTS on here before? Maybe? I honestly can’t remember. But I adore them. The music is fun, the dancing is incredible, and they are genuinely beautiful little angels sent here to bless us with their stage presence.

The fandom is…intense. The entire thing can veer into cult territory, but I try to tune that out and simply enjoy the experience.

The concert itself was super fun. I purposely avoided the setlist beforehand so I could still be surprised, which made everything way more exciting. The second they walked onstage I went feral.

After the show – and what felt like an endless walk back toward the Strip – I had zero energy left for the floor and decided to call it a night.

I skipped the cabs because I was tired of paying $30 for ten-minute rides and motivated myself through the walk by promising I could get McDonald’s afterwards since there was one next to the hotel.

At 1214 I walked up to the doors.

Locked.

Filled with concert-goers inside, laughing with their meals!! They must have closed at midnight. Mind you Google Maps said 24-hours.

I dragged myself back to the room furious at myself for taking too long and finally got into bed where, five hours later, I finally sampled the slice of funfetti cake I had been carrying around all day. The cake was excellent the frosting was not my style.

As of right now this is my only real vacation of the year, so… see you back in the city!

Bites of the week: LA Edition

This weekend was a real breath of fresh air – literally. I spent it in Portland, Oregon, which also happens to be the 48th state I’ve visited.

For those who don’t know, I’ve been visiting every state as a personal little project and we’re getting very close to the end. The last two are Hawaii and Alaska and, if I’m being honest, I probably won’t get to those until 2028 or 2029. The goal is to finish by 2030, which feels very doable. PS everyone needs to stop volunteering to go with me to Hawaii, where were you for Arkansas?!

Also… kind of horrifying that 2030 is only four years away.

Also known as the year I turn 40. Eek. I’m beginning the countdown toward the inevitable “what did I even accomplish in my thirties?” spiral.

But before we collapse, let’s focus on what I actually did accomplish in my thirties – starting with this weekend.

Friday
Jolted out of bed by my alarm at 6AM. We normally don’t book an early flight but sometimes you can’t avoid it!

Landed in Portland around noon where my friend met me at the airport. Turns out this is one of those cities where people pick you up. What a delight!

Immediately I felt like I had entered the exact Portland I had always seen in photos. Outside the plane window: endless pine trees. Inside the airport: abstract haircuts, long shorts with many pockets, and a massive hiking group gathering at baggage claim.

The authentic experience continued because… it was raining.

We had lunch at Sweedeedee where the authentic experience continued. Before putting our name down the staff managed to turn the record over, clean some glasses and pour some tea. Once seated, I ordered a potato gratin topped with an egg – and obviously added bacon. They also had a bunch of excellent looking baked goods, so we left with a cookie.

After lunch we headed to Nike HQ because, like many Portland folks, my friend works there. I love visiting a company campus – it’s such a different work environment than anything I’ve experienced. Yes, I asked where is the cafeteria. We walked around most of the property and every building was themed around one of their athletes, with mini museums in the lobbies tied to the sport or player. American history, people!

My one request was to see the Michael Johnson track. I can’t fully explain it, but I have wanted to see this track for decades. Why? Because it’s a standard track… surrounded by trees!! Have you ever seen anything like that?

It was everything I hoped it would be.

After the tour we went to the employee Nike store. I assumed it would be a cute little shop with a few exclusive pieces. Wrong. It was enormous. Between the two of us we left with five pairs of sneakers.

After Nike I had some quiet time – a requirement on any trip. I stayed at The Woodlark which, importantly, comes with a complimentary daily martini. How chic!

We ended the night with dinner at RingSide Steakhouse. On the drive from Nike my friend pointed it out and said it was a classic Portland steakhouse famous for the onion rings. I said: say no more, we’re going.

We shared the onion rings, a caesar, and a ribeye. Then finished the evening with a creme brulee. One of my favorite types of dinners.

Saturday
Started the day with breakfast at G-Love. Strange name, in my opinion.

The restaurant had the vibe of a very standard brunch spot, but I ordered this pork belly toast dish and was genuinely impressed. I had never had anything quite like it.

After breakfast we wandered through some shops on 23rd street before heading to these adorable stores the being: Fine Art Fruit and another called The Yo Store. I need to say something that I think really defines Portland: this city is full of stores run by people simply selling whatever they want.

You can’t categorize them. It’s not “home goods” or “women’s clothing.” No. These people are just out here living the dream, curating little worlds. It’s whatever they want it to be.

The Yo Store was exactly that. They had the cutest childrenswear – brands like Halcyon Nights and Tinycottons – but also women’s clothing, home goods, candy…?!

Then we stopped into more shops including Frances May, which carried gorgeous brands you’d find in New York or Japan. I ended up buying a sparkly bracelet as my Portland souvenir, but also as a little marker for completing my visiting all of the continental United States.

It felt important to have something physical tied to the project – something to remind me of the dedication and joy of it all. Perhaps a watch for 50?!

My friend said, “only you would buy a sparkly bracelet in Portland,” and I told her I could find one anywhere.

Other standout stores:

• Space Camp – sold candy by the pound, D&D things (I don’t know what to call it), fragrances, and high-end sportswear and more!

• Stand Up Comedy – gorgeous retail space with very cool clothing, funkier than Frances May

• POUBELLE and MARSHALL – antique store where I left with a Mickey Mouse Disneyland wallet (I already own the Donald Duck version)

PS Portland has no sales tax! Wahoo!

Around 3PM my body naturally required a slice of pizza, so we went to Baby Doll Pizza. Listen, as we know, pizza outside New York is never going to fully satisfy me, but it got the job done.

After that we went to Lauretta Jean’s, a bakery with an overwhelming number of pie options. We split three: chocolate, fruit, and cream. Which honestly feels like the correct pie trio.

The banana cream was the winner. The others (cherry and chocolate honeycomb) made me wish I had trusted my first instincts on ordering other options.

We spent the afternoon driving around the city and passed a video rental store my friend loves called Movie Madness. I immediately insisted we go in.

There are very few things I miss more than a video rental store and this was the best one I had ever seen. Endless shelves, an incredible archive – I was deeply impressed and equally jealous.

After some quiet time back at the hotel, we met up again for dinner at Han Oak, a Korean restaurant with fantastic flavors and a completely different energy from the steakhouse the night before. Both good, but nice to see a variety of vibes within the city.

Sunday
My last day started with sunshine(!!!) and solo breakfast at Ken’s Artisan Bakery where I had the daily omelet and sampled a pastry called the Passion Fruit Escargot. Basically a croissant situation filled with passion fruit – a lot but fun to try.

After breakfast I stopped into Cotopaxi to pick up a belt bag. I was going hiking later (you know me, always hiking!) and had only packed a purse, which… wasn’t going to work. I’m also continuing my travels after this weekend, so it felt smart to have a more casual option. She goes for walks!

Then I went up to the Rose Garden. Sadly it wasn’t peak bloom yet, but I still got to admire some incredibly vivid colors. Also, due to all the rain most roses were covered in water droplets which gave a very dramatic flair.

After that my friend picked me up and we headed outside the city to spend time with the trees.

Before we started, I warned her not to expect dramatic oohs and ahhs from me because I’m not always someone who gasps at waterfalls or nature moments. And let me tell you – I spent the entire hike making little comments of amazement.

I was completely in awe of the different trees and mosses. I had never really experienced this kind of climate before and the variety of greens was so impressive! Everything looked lush and alive. And the air! My lungs were probably starving for it.

After the hike we grabbed lunch at Sugarpine, this adorable drive-up spot with beautiful salads, sandwiches, and some of the best vanilla soft serve I’ve ever had.

We drove back into the city and naturally got more vanilla soft serve at Cheese & Crack. I was mostly there for the chocolate cowboy hat topping (it was very I feel like you’re just here for the zipline), but I was far too full to properly enjoy it.

After some drinks outside, we shared a few pastas at Luce before I headed back to the hotel.

One thing my friend had been trying to do all weekend was get me to see Mount Hood. It had been hidden the entire trip from overcast and she kept insisting I needed to experience it.

As we said goodbye she told me to look for it while crossing the bridge because the sky had finally cleared.

And then I saw it!

I gasped – “there it is!”, I shouted in my Uber. This enormous mountain suddenly appearing in the distance – so cool, but also slightly terrifying. There was something very intimidating about it.

It felt like the perfect way to close out the weekend.

Yes, I’m back after a week off – not because of anything fabulous, unfortunately, but because I had some sort of stomach bug. So my weekend was mostly spent alone catching up on TV. Current favorites: Margo Has Money Troubles and Rooster.

We are feeling much better, which means I left the house multiple times. Here’s what we got up to:

Friday
Started the day with a blowout, then spent the rest of it at home working. Normally by Friday I’m mentally checked out, but there was a lot to get done and suddenly it was 6PM.

While working, a friend texted asking if I wanted to join her for dinner at La Cantine. I headed over after work and we shared a few dishes – my favorite was the burrata appetizer. I wish I could expand more on what they did with it but I don’t remember but it was a nice fresh take on it!

However, things took a turn at dessert…

Storytime!
We were sitting at the counter and I noticed a jar of chocolate chip cookies. As you can imagine, I spent the entire meal staring at them. They weren’t on the menu, so I assumed they were leftovers from lunch service.

I finally asked the waitress what the deal was with the cookies and she said, “oh, those are just display cookies. We have some in the back from earlier today for us.”

Now, I understand she said they were for them but I um made it clear that too was interested in a cookie. And honestly, I felt fairly confident she was going to return with our dessert and a little bonus cookie moment. Because that’s just how restaurants work. I don’t make the rules.

The cookie never arrived.

Listen, I know she said they were technically for the staff, but if a customer implies they want a leftover cookie during a friendly little kiki… I don’t know, I feel like you give them the cookie.

So yes, I was deeply upset. Completely normal behavior for a woman my age. Not just about the cookie, but about the decline of society. The waitress simply was not picking up what I was putting down and hospitality as a concept is crumbling!

After dinner we caught the second half of the Knicks game (gotta support the team.) at Lou’s Athletic Club.

Before getting on the train I stopped at the grocery store and stocked up on Trix cereal. They’ve removed the food dye, so I needed to grab a few ‘older’ boxes while they still have the vibrant colors.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t have time for this. Let me eat my lime green watermelons. I do not need them to look natural.

Can we focus on bigger issues and leave Trix alone?? This goes back to my biggest rant on how we are removing all the color from the world.

Bonus: train arrived right when I got to the platform.

Saturday
Slept in way too late – she’s been up doom scrolling! Someone take my phone away.

As I was waking up, a friend called saying she was going to be in the neighborhood and wanted to see if I wanted to grab a coffee.

I had roughly thirty minutes to get myself together. Normally I would’ve just thrown on something casual, but I needed to head to New Jersey later that day, so it felt like the right moment to fully get ready.

Met my friend for a late morning walk and breakfast treat, then we wandered over to Soho. I was heading to New Jersey for my friend’s daughter’s communion and needed to pick up a little gift. For the older daughter I had gotten a Swarovski teddy bear necklace, so I needed to match that energy. Was very hard to not keep it.

Only to discover the Soho Swarovski location had closed?! That store was so beautiful – what a loss.

Also, if it’s not clear, I have a huge soft spot for Swa. They make really fun pieces that I feel like people overlook.

Luckily, there’s a location directly next to Penn Station. A miracle. Seems like G-O-D was on my side today.

I picked out a cute floral piece and headed for the train. Also got incredibly lucky because I hadn’t checked the schedule and if I missed the train leaving in twenty minutes, there wouldn’t be another for two hours. PS: NJ Transit needs more weekend trains!

Got on the train and immediately felt a tap on my arm – my cousin was also heading out of the city.

Made my way to Montclair and hopped in an Uber. Earlier in the week I made sure my friend was serving the same incredible cake she had at a previous party and thank god (no pun intended), she was. Thought about my upcoming slice the whole ride.

Hung out for a few hours, including catching up with the girls (approx 8 girls under the age of 10), who immediately asked about my purse. I finally brought out the heart bag and received full approval from the nine-year-olds. Honestly, thank god.

Took an Uber to the path because, once again, terrible train timing.

Had a short rest at home, then needed to get ready again.

A good friend of mine was throwing her 35th birthday at Lucia Alimentari. A birthday party serving unlimited fresh pizza is exactly where I want to be.

After grabbing my slices, I went up to the staff pouring wine and asked if they could get me one of the canned Gatorades they sell at the slice shop. I think they were impressed by my knowledge of this. I don’t know for sure but I believe this is the only place in Manhattan that carries canned Gatorade.

After dessert – which included my cookies – we headed to The Folly for the afterparty. We were about to leave when the DJ played Beauty and a Beat, so naturally we stayed for one more song.

Sunday
Started the day with a leftover slice of cross-cake then spent the morning cleaning, then headed over to Wogie’s (half the fun of sports is the bar food.) to secure a table for the Knicks game. First-come, first-served situations make me irrationally stressed, so naturally I was the first person in the bar. My brother and his girlfriend arrived shortly after.

After the victorious win we walked over to Birdie’s where there was no line, so we grabbed yogurt – only for a massive line to form by the time we left. Again, luck was on my side this weekend!

By the time I got home it was already late and I needed to get myself ready for the week.

Did everyone mark themselves safe from the Correspondents’ Dinner on Facebook? I, fortunately, was not invited – apparently my journalism hasn’t reached them yet.

But here is my weekend reporting.

Friday
Started the day with a hair appointment, then went for a morning walk. The walk was…to a bakery. Listen, the walk needed a destination.

Earlier in the week I saw a “10 best brownies in NYC” post and sometimes the algorithm really does its job. The top spot was a bakery I hadn’t heard of – clicked through and it was a few blocks from my apartment. Well look at that.

The bakery is called Noa. Not entirely sure how to pronounce it. In my head it’s either like a teenager saying “no-wa” or just Noah? I could have asked. I did not.

I grabbed a brownie, a cinnamon roll, and a chocolate chip cookie. For anyone who is concerned, I don’t eat it all at once I took a knife to them throughout the weekend. Everything was fine. The brownie tasted a bit underbaked to me – not in a gooey way, more like slightly raw?! It just didn’t have that cake density texture you are looking for. Good flavor, just not my favorite. For the record, my top brownie is still Hani’s. Yowza!

The cinnamon roll was the standout (especially when I put it in the microwave the next morning for 20 seconds), and the cookie was good but not great. The space itself is really nice and right next to a small park, so it’s a great spot to grab something and sit outside. For more tips on how to enjoy treats - click to subscribe!

Headed home to do some work, but by Friday… it’s over. I can’t do it. I’d much rather work Sunday, especially when the weather is nice.

Wrapped around 4 and met friends for dinner at Bonnie’s. We shared a bunch of dishes – highlight was the sundae. Then we went to a birthday at Roses R&R a few blocks away, which, to my surprise, is a tiki bar. Fun fact: I love tiki bars. I love fruit, I love sweet cocktails – all to say this really isn’t a stretch.

I don’t go to birthday drinks like this as much anymore, but three of my closest friends were in town and it felt oddly surreal how normal it all felt. Like 2015. Just another Friday night. I even left saying “see you soon,” which is… not true. They don’t live here. But it felt that normal.

Bonus: I got ID’d and my friends didn’t. She’s still got it! And also umm I forgot my ID so my friend had to discreetly get me a drink.

On my way out I ran into two other friends who invited me to drinks earlier in the week but I had to pass because of this party. Running into them at the end of the night felt very kismet. Especially because I had plans with one of them the following morning in the same neighborhood.

Saturday
What’s this? Rain? 50 degrees? On a Saturday? DJ, play This Is What Dreams Are Made Of. What a thrill.

As much as I wanted to stay in bed, I had morning plans. I met a friend and her kid for breakfast at Sunset Diner. I got a BLT and a hot chocolate and I was genuinely thrilled it was cold and rainy so I could squeeze in one more before it gets too warm.

After breakfast we went back to their place where we played with blocks, read books, and sang her child’s current favorite song: Happy Birthday.

Headed home and told myself – that’s it for the day. Time to enjoy the rain.

Did some things around the apartment, then put on a movie. If I’m staying in all day on a Saturday, I try to watch something I’ve never seen before. I went with Blow-Up. What a kooky little film. I enjoyed it, but once again felt sad about not being alive in the 60s.

Later I went out to pick up dinner – one of my goals this year is to stop defaulting to delivery and actually go get it. Especially in the rain, because as we’ve discussed, food tastes better when you’ve earned it by walking through cold, wet weather.

Watched the Knicks game – we’re back in it !!! and then spent the rest of the night scrolling.

Sunday
Spent the morning watching cable and got pulled into a movie I had never seen before: Serpico. From the cover, I always thought it was some kind of period piece about Jesus, but I was fully into it. Also to be clear, it is not about Jesus. Didn’t get to finish it, so now I need to find it on cable again. Cable is our last hope everyone!

After a slow start at home, I met up with my friends from Friday at the playground in Union Square. We ran around and scared the children! Jk they have two kids so they were playing around with other kids while we sat in the sun.

Before meeting up, one of their kids said, “if we see Chelsea maybe she’ll take us to get a cookie,” and I love this reputation. I will always take you to get a cookie. Ask me any day.

After the playground we walked to Schmackary’s. Are they the best cookies? No. But they have great options for kids. We split six flavors between the four of us. My favorite was the Spring Spirit.

We split up after walking down to Soho. I stopped at one of my favorite grocery stores – the Morton Williams on Bleecker to pick up baking ingredients.

Headed home for some quiet time, then went back out for a slice of pizza and a pedicure (she’s blessed). I love a pedicure, but this is also the time of year where you have to start going more often… it’s exposed toe season! Be safe out there. Kind reminder on my personal thoughts on toe polish.

While there, I caught up on my book and indulged in a 20-minute foot massage. She’s the definition of luxury!

Made my doughs for cookie orders and stayed in for the rest of the night. How is everyone feeling about this season of Euphoria? Can anyone stand Rue? I find her character so incredibly annoying.

It was my generation’s once-in-a-lifetime show. I knew while I was watching it that it was going to change me. And it did.

Crazy?
Nope. Here’s what happened:

The OC is what made me discover fashion or really, fall in love with it. From pointed ballet flats to, most importantly, Chanel. It also made me realize I really (really) loved shows about teenagers.

After that, my mom introduced me to movies like The Breakfast Club (“I think you’ll like this”) and shows like 90210. I started renting every movie I could find and buying every YA magazine I could get my hands on. Then came the bible: Teen Vogue.

I couldn’t get over it, finally, girls my age were wearing outfits I actually wanted to wear, and people like Mischa were on the cover.

At the same time, shows like Laguna Beach (thanks to the success of The OC) started airing, which then led to The Hills. In the first episode, Lauren gets a job at – we all know – Teen Vogue. I couldn’t believe it. I ran into my mom’s room to tell her Lauren was working there “in the closet!!!”

My mom then told me about people like Anna Wintour, this book called The Devil Wears Prada, and casually said, “yes, you could work at a magazine.”

Me?? How?!

Well, I’d have to move to New York City. Which means I’d have to go to college there. So let’s look at options. Columbia? Lol. NYU? Maybe. Parsons? The Project Runway school? Oh… that could be something.

But before any of that, I needed a strong application and I should probably know how to make a magazine.

“You should join yearbook,” a new friend told me.

So I did.

I quickly realized yearbook is just a giant magazine. I worked my way up and, before I knew it, I was editor-in-chief my senior year.

My teacher and supervisor sat me down one day and asked, “what do you want?”

I told her: I want to see every student in this school holding my yearbook. Smiling with their friends, reading the greatest yearbook of all time.

That yearbook went on to win a Scholastic Yearbook of the Year award. It also became the most expensive yearbook my school had ever produced. Not my fault! Every single copy had two ribbons hand-glued in. Yes, I insisted. And yes, I did say, “I will die if we don’t get the ribbons.”

Do I wish I could redo 85% of that book? Of course. It’s a typographic nightmare. Some of those layouts… I didn’t know what a grid was. We move on.

Anyway – The OC ended. Marissa died. Neither the show nor I ever fully recovered.

But I did get into Parsons.

I found out at The Original Pancake House while visiting my grandparents in Florida. Just like that, it was official – I was moving to New York City.

About a year into Parsons, Amy Astley – Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue – came to speak. I went with friends and stayed after for the book signing.

I handed her my book, and she looked at my hands. More specifically, my nails.

At the time, they were painted Chanel Jade. The Chanel Jade. The impossible-to-find, must-have shade of the season.

And yes – of course I had it.

Amy looked at me and said, “wait, are you wearing Chanel Jade?”

“Yes! I am.”

I started telling her how I tracked it down and, somehow, in that moment, I said – by the way, I’ve owned every issue of this magazine since it launched, and I would love the opportunity to work here.

She paused, then wrote down an email address and said to tell them she sent me.

Two months later, I was interning at Teen Vogue. Just like Lauren. The office even knew me as the Chanel nail polish girl.

Where did I learn about Chanel? The OC.
How did I learn about Teen Vogue internships? The Hills.
How did The Hills exist? The OC.

I couldn’t believe it. I was working at the place I had dreamed about for years. Everything I had been working toward led to that moment and it actually happened.

I stayed for years. I met some of my closest friends there. One of them told me about an agency called Chandelier. Around the same time, another friend of mine had started working there, and I tucked it away in my mind.

As graduation got closer, I started to worry I wouldn’t be offered a full-time role at Teen Vogue. So I reached out and by “reached out,” I mean I fully stalked – that former colleague from the magazine to ask about opportunities at the agency.

I walked up to her and said, “oh my god, so crazy to see you here!” It was her party.

I got the job.

I stayed for over ten years. Made some of my closest friends, traveled, and found what I still love doing today: advertising. But more specifically, production – the process of building an image, shaping it, and watching it come together with type before it ends up on a screen or in, you guessed it, a magazine.

So no, I wasn’t exaggerating.

The OC was the catalyst for all of it.

Could I have gotten here another way? Maybe. But this is the path that unfolded, and I know exactly where it started.

Okay, if I’m being perfectly honest, all of that is true, but what I really actually wanted to talk about is this:

As we all know, Marissa Cooper is a style icon. Anyone who watched The OC can remember a piece of hers that stuck with them. For me, there are a few, but one has had a lasting hold: the 2004 Chanel Heart Chain Flap Bag.

A heart chain?! Have you ever seen anything like that! No, I think not!

She wore it (in lavender)in the season two episode, The Family Ties and I never forgot it. For the past twenty years, whenever people talked about goals and dreams, I would say mine was to own that bag. And before anyone panics – yes, I have other goals – but this has always been up there. And I stand by this: it’s okay to have material goals too.

The thing is, this bag is not easy to find. I’ve looked for years. Even in major resale cities like Tokyo, where I’ve shown it to top sellers there and no one has ever had it.

Cut to January 2026. Remember when I said I paid myself to go to the gym? And I mentioned that I secured the camo saddle, but I didn’t tell the full story.

That bag is also hard to find, and there was one seller in the city who had it. We hit a few roadblocks: canceled meetings, lack of professionalism and I eventually lost interest. It was frustrating, but I moved on. After some umm slightly angry emails from me…

I found another one online and reached out to the seller. She was incredibly kind and responsive, so I bought it from her. After purchasing, I went back to browse her site and… there she was. The Heart Chain.

I gasped.

I didn’t even think this was possible. But there she was.

And now I’m thinking – what do I do? I just bought a bag I really wanted. I can’t possibly buy another. But I also can’t leave this one behind.

So I messaged her. I told her how much the bag meant to me and how long I’d been looking for it. She responded saying she would take it off the site and hold it for me because she wanted it to go to someone who would have it for life. She understood.

I asked her to give me two months. I could have bought it right then, but mentally it felt like too much. I waited until after tax season so everything would feel a bit more… grounded. (If only I could write it off…) Also, to my mother don’t worry I can afford it. You should be very proud!

It’s been just over two months (I kept my word as did she) and the bag is now with me. Perfect condition.

I just sat at my desk working with it on my shoulder, fully in disbelief. The pride I felt dragging my finger across the tiny multi color hearts.

And the craziest part – if that first seller hadn’t fumbled things, I never would have gone elsewhere. I never would have met Vivian. I never would have found this bag.

All of it ties back to The OC. This bag feels like a marker – a full-circle moment. When I was 14, I don’t think I truly believed I’d ever own it. Maybe a small part of me hoped. But now I do.

It represents both the years of wanting something, of working, of believing. Of the bag AND my career. And I couldn’t be happier to finally have her.

I recently talked to someone at a party who said my Substack makes them feel bad about how little they do on the weekends. Let me tell you something – you are in for a real treat today because I barely left the house.

Listen, I had a cold, which usually doesn’t take me down, but I really couldn’t find the energy. But the show must go on.

Friday
Got my hair blown out, then did something I’ve been wanting to try for a while: I picked up a cinnamon roll from Loser’s. Are you familiar? I want to call it a bakery, but it’s technically a ghost kitchen – not open to the public, just set up for delivery. Look at me, Webster’s Dictionary over here!

Anyway, they have this giant cinnamon roll people rave about, so I thought, let’s see. I picked it up and… I was disappointed. There wasn’t enough icing and it just didn’t hit. It felt like I was eating underbaked sourdough with melted butter. I’m open to trying it again – maybe it needed to be eaten fresh and not reheated?!

I had a work call that afternoon. At 1PM. And somehow that became the entire day. I cannot possibly do anything else – I have a call.

It was another gorgeous day and I had a very specific craving: pasta, outside. Luckily a friend texted asking if I was around and I said yes, we are getting pasta.

We went to Bar Pitti, ate outside, and let me tell you – the moment my spaghetti and meatballs hit my lips, Life Is Worth Living by Justin Bieber started playing in my head.

We then shared a pint of phish food while watching the Drag Race finale. PS: I hadn’t had that ice cream in years and wow… no flavor comes close.

Later on I watched Sabrina perform at Coachella – I forgot how fun it is to watch a concert at home.

Saturday
“Oh no, I don’t think so” was the theme of the day. I truly could not find the energy. My Mucinex PM hit a little too hard and I was… not well.

The day before, a friend and I were told to go see Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York and we said sure, why not, so we got tickets for that evening.

I forced myself out and walked up to Times Square since I hadn’t left the house all day. Sadly, only about 6,500 steps.

We met for an easy dinner at Los Tacos, then headed to the show. It was super cute – lots of charm. I did have a few production questions about the storyline, but I won’t ruin it.

Sunday
I woke up, saw it was cloudy, and could not have been more excited. We’re entering that time of year where you feel guilty staying inside on a nice day, so this was a gift.

I forced myself to try a new gym class. The teacher was scary, but it’s good to shake things up sometimes. On my way there I told myself: this is all you have to do today.

The second class ended, I practically ran home and spent the rest of the day with Bravo. Caught up on Ladies of London , can someone please get Margo on a plane back to LA so we never have to see her again? While they were fighting I was working on my home renovation project and then I also watched the first three episodes of RHORI – and I have to say, we might be on the precipice of greatness with that group. I would strongly suggest one cast member should dye their hair blonde to stand out but I’m not in PR…Cannot wait to see where it goes. Besides Rosie – she can see herself out.

Bites of the week

• Banana and Original yogurt, Go Greek

Yikes I totally forgot to take pictures this weekend and I even mention forgetting other small things as well..should I be concerned?! Is this the end?!

Friday
Started the day at the gym, then… I think I hung out at home? To quote the great Samantha Jones: I need to start writing things down. I cannot remember. I’m blaming this on not working right now – the days really blur together. And I spend too much time scrolling.

I decided to head over to Go Greek because I thought it had opened. Wrong. The grand opening was Sunday. The guy told me to come back then because there would be a lot of people. Yeah, no – I don’t want anyone there. I’m not waiting in line for yogurt. The LA locations are empty and I expect the New York one to be the same… but I have concerns. I’ll go this week. There are never lines in the middle of the day anywhere.

At that point I was hungry, but it was already 430 so I felt a bit lost – what is a girl to do when she can’t have her afternoon froyo?! I needed to pick something up in the East Village, so I decided to try the new hot dog spot on 8th Street: Whits. My brother and I had tried to go earlier in the week and got turned away because of their grand opening was later that day. All to say I had a lot of bad luck with openings this week.

The hot dog was good, and they told me I was the their first customer to get their to-go hot box. Even though I said to stay… I didn’t want to ruin the moment. One complaint: $6 for a hot dog is a lot.

Then I walked over to From Lucie. I was having a friend over for dinner and he told me he had a perfect meal last week: frozen pizza and a slice of carrot cake from Whole Foods. Honestly, a dream. So I decided to recreate it – just not from WF.

I picked up a slice of their chocolate (best in the city) and carrot cake. They were advertising her cookbook preorder and a block party signing on the 18th. While standing there I thought, wait… did I already buy this? Did I?! Wait I bought this right?! I checked my phone – yes, I did. Through a Strand partnership. Preorders are dangerous! You can really forget. So I walked over there to see if my book had arrived.

Went to the customer service desk where a man missing half his teeth barely answered my questions, only to tell me I would have gotten an email if it was here. And honestly… for the best. Bad teeth is a huge problem for me. I needed to leave immediately.

Got home and cleaned up the apartment – oh! that’s what I did this morning. Eureka! I just remembered. I switched out my closet for the season.

I don’t have a walk-in (tragic), just a terribly designed 80s sliding-door situation (tears). Also, no coat closet. Where is my coat closet!! So my dad installed an extra rack when I moved in - these ‘contractors’ really do the least when they design these spaces.

I moved all my winter coats and clothes to the top rack and brought spring/summer down below. I also edited a few pieces out and tried everything on again before putting it back – highly recommend.

Closet PSA: at the end of the season I always take my winter coats to the cleaners so I can store them in the bags and have them ready for next year.

Left the house at 715 to pick up a pizza from L’Industrie. I will not wait on that line – and (tip) you don’t have to if you order ahead.

My friend came over, we watched the Lalaparuza episode of Drag Race, then tried to get into a show at the Comedy Cellar. No luck. But we did manage to grab two seats for cocktails at Dante, so not the worst ending.

Saturday
Spent the morning at home, then decided to head out around 1 for a walk. Until… I got a text from friends asking if I was home because they were at Happiest Hour down the block.

Fun fact: the last time I was there was also because of an impulsive “are you home?” text from the same group. I was not – I was a few blocks away at McDonald’s. I managed to get over there to see them.

Pulled myself together and headed over. We all felt slightly guilty being inside on such a gorgeous day, but we stayed for a few hours before eventually relocating back to my place to regroup and snack on candy.

We made a brief return outside to enjoy the weather, then naturally went back in.

Separated around 7 and I stayed in for the rest of the night got dinner delivered and enjoyed some quiet time at home.

Sunday
My mom works in the party business and had an event in the city today, so I offered to help out. I set up a full gift bag assembly line, which I was very happy to do.

The party was for a man’s 70th birthday at the Ziegfeld and he spared no expense. The theme was SNL and he really committed – over 400 guests. Even I did an eyebrow raise by that amount of birthday invites.

Throughout the space he had displays of items he’s saved over the years, from special t-shirts to the yarmulkes from bar mitzvahs and weddings he’s attended. As one archivist to another, I really appreciated it.

After finishing up I grabbed a burger at Benoit – hot tip: it was fantastic.

Got home a little before 4, took a rest with the cat, and basically called it a day.

Bites of the week

• Hots Pizza: Spicy Vodka

PS I just checked my phone and I did write down the closet clean out to not forget.

I spent most of mine away at a wedding, so this won’t be a full city recap, but here’s what I did get up to:

Friday
I needed to meet my friends uptown at 230, so I spent the morning at home. We were heading down to LBI for the wedding. Fun fact: house rentals in LBI do not come with bedding or towels. So you need to bring your own. Which meant it looked like I was moving in for six months when I arrived. PSA: that Rimowa trunk really came in handy.

We drove down to the shore with enough time to make our beds and get ready for dinner. A lot of the island is closed for the off-season, but I booked us a table at Black Whale Bar & Fish House. We shared a bunch of fried seafood, including clam strips (a personal favorite). We had to run, so I ordered the check with a slice of coconut cream pie to-go. Hey, it was the special! I always try to order something off the specials and I am never passing up a slice of pie.

Then we met up with the rest of the wedding guests for welcome drinks to kick off the weekend. My friends and I secured a section at the bar for the night. Highlight: discovering a full candy platter about an hour in and bringing back an assorted selection for the group.

Headed home and got into the welcome bag snacks.

Saturday
I have to say, I love an off-season beach weekend. There’s something about it that feels very luxurious – the colder weather, empty roads, the quiet. Every time I go, it makes me want to only visit during that time of year. If you’re feeling stuck in the city right now, book a weekend in the Hamptons. It’s a fraction of the price and there’s still plenty to enjoy. I once went in the dead of winter and couldn’t have been happier.

Anyways, back to LBI…

My friend and I were up early – do you also have trouble sleeping in somewhere new? We decided to go pick up coffee and doughnuts for the house. As we were leaving, I asked if she could drive me to a building we had seen the day before so I could photograph it. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve asked for a ride – especially to photograph something – I’d have a personal driver by now.

We got there and, of course, it was completely backlit at 8A. I have a feeling those photos are not going to be great.

We stopped at a chocolate shop to grab some treats, then went to a doughnut spot that said it was open… only to find it closed when we walked inside to see it was not a currently functioning business. This is a PSA for Shore Good Doughnuts at 14 S Bay Ave, your doors are unlocked.

Picked up the rest of the group and went to Uncle Will’s for breakfast. The highlight was the banana chocolate chip pancakes I ordered for the table.

Went down to the beach to say hello to the ocean, picked up some fudge in town (I suggest the chocolate marshmallow). Then had some quiet time back at the house while everyone slowly got ready for the wedding.

At 4PM sharp our shuttle arrived, and we discovered the driver had decorated the inside with white balloons and paper bells. A delight!

We got to the wedding and made sure our group was all seated together – a bit now for over ten years. Table 9!

Danced, ate cake, and took the last shuttle home. A personal highlight: when I got on the bus, someone shouted, “Hey! It’s the Pink Pony Club girl!” Let’s just say when that song came on earlier in the night, I got a little excited. Apparently I pushed the saxophonist out of the circle? I don’t recall this, but I’ll take their word for it.

Sunday
Packed up the beds and headed out. We grabbed excellent bagels at Bagel Shack, then went to the other Shore Good Doughnuts – I called to make sure they were open, to sample a few before hitting the road.

Got back to my apartment around 1 and felt completely drained, so I took a hot bath and slept until 4.

Grabbed a cheeseburger at McDonald’s, then met a friend for a movie at AMC 34th. We saw The Drama and ended up having a full discussion about it on the walk home. I can’t say much without spoiling it, but I can say I really liked how it was edited and shot.

We grabbed a late dinner at our local favorite, Bar Six, then headed home. Walked in, saw everything I had left on the floor earlier, and decided… that’s a tomorrow problem.

Could you stay for six days? Sure. But three days is more than enough to have a fantastic trip.

Shopping – okay, name a city and I can find you somewhere to shop. Is this a brag or a cry for help? You decide. Obviously not an innovative take here, I feel comfortable saying this is the best shopping city in the world.

Note: this list does not include vintage. I love a good consignment bag shop, but when it comes to clothing, vintage stores rarely carry my size, so I usually skip them. Let me know if you’d like to dive into that topic for the next 24-hours.

Flabelus: 45 Rue Bonaparte
Every Mary Jane you could imagine. Mostly velvet, with endless colors, textures, and styles. They also carry slides and smoking shoes for men.

Tabio: 32 Rue Saint-Sulpice
A Japanese sock brand I love. If you can’t get to Japan, go here. Multiple locations with a fantastic range from solids to delicate patterns, for both men and women.

Maison Ola: 33 Rue de Grenelle
A fabulous hat store focused on classic styles like pillboxes and wide brims – perfect for both winter and summer.

Antoine de Macedo Watchmaker: 28 Rue Madame
A great selection of vintage watches if you’re looking for a bigger investment. That said, if you’re really serious about vintage, I’d suggest waiting for Japan – the selection in Tokyo is bananas.

The Bergdorf/Harrods of Paris. A beautiful department store with a wide selection – perfect if you’re short on time and want to see a lot in one place.

Officine Universelle Buly 1803: 6 Rue Bonaparte
Very well known at this point. Great for gifts, combs, and custom pieces. Pro tip: there’s a location inside Bon Marche if you just want the products that aren’t customizable.

Deyrolle: 46 Rue du Bac
An incredible taxidermy store where everything is for sale – tigers, flamingos, you name it. In the back, thousands of insects that can be framed on the spot. No photos allowed.

Astier de Villatte: 16 Rue de Tournon
Ceramics store that becomes especially magical during the holidays with an extensive ornament selection.

Okay, I feel like we need to talk about Rubirosa’s. This store has gained a ton of popularity – the colors are rich, the button-downs and sweaters are beautiful, and the space itself is very well designed.

But…I don’t like it in there.

I find the staff dismissive and I can’t quite understand why it bothers me so much, but it does. I feel in the way, not welcome, and for that reason… we have beef.

A rotating menu blending Asian and Italian influences. Super delicious.

Le Relais de l’Entrecote: 20 Rue Saint-Benoît
The steak-frites institution. Do not skip dessert.

Brasserie des Pres: 6 Cr du Commerce Saint-André
Beautifully decorated and great for an afternoon drink. The upstairs is worth seeing. (Haven’t tried the food.)

Perfect for both sweet and savory souffles.

Kodawari Ramen (Yokochō): 29 Rue Mazarine
A ramen spot designed like Tsukiji fish market with incredible flavor. There’s a second location in the 1st.

A great spot to invest in a proper hairbrush or treatments. They have different brushes tailored to specific hair types.

A ribbon store with every color imaginable in multiple widths. Truly stunning selection.

Very high-end bespoke shirts - she’s fancy! TBH I have never gotten anything made but I would like to!

Okay, this might technically be in the 8th, but it’s very close to the Tuileries so we’re counting it. This restaurant is inside the Grand Palais, so I’d suggest pairing it with a visit there.

Definitely on the pricier side, but the space is beautiful and the food is wonderful. Great for a ladies who lunch energy day.

An alternative to the original entrecote, with the added bonus of burger and chicken options.

Our dinner was lovely and I really liked the space itself but the thing I haven’t stopped thinking about is the 60 euro pavlova. Best bite of that trip. This is at the Louvre so it’s a great option post your viewing of Winged Victory.

Stumbled in here last time and loved it. A really fun, elevated take on costume jewelry.

An incredible store selling only pastels, they have over 1200 colors. Note: they are only open Thursday afternoons.

Okay, I have never done this but everyone says it is incredible. I believe it is only opened on the weekends.

Again, this isn’t everything, but these are the places that have made the biggest impact for me. I hope to keep evolving this list, and please share any of your musts!

Since I am taking some time off I decided to spend the weekend in Paris. Two of my closest friends are pending some extended time there so it was an excuse to go. I think I have said this before but being in new York going for a long weekend just isn’t that wild. I really think 3-days is all you need. You could easily go for seven but a three day little weekend is an absolute delight! (note: this does not include travel days). Here’s what we got up to!

Friday
Started the day as anyone should: pastries.

My vacation rule and honestly sometimes even in New York is to get whatever I want, even if it’s just a bite and toss the rest. Yes, a little wasteful, but I want to try everything and there’s simply no room to finish it all. Sometimes you take one bite and go, oh no… not interested. But at least you tried it.

We did a little pastry crawl starting at Mamiche where I got a custard-filled beignet and a chocolate croissant. The beignet was the winner – but I’m biased toward anything custard.

Then down the block to Babka Zana for a small chocolate babka. Very good, super fluffy, but Breads still reigns supreme.

Finally, two blocks over to Le Comptoir de Madeleine where I was the first customer of the day. I got three madeleines: salted caramel, original, and chocolate chip. The salted caramel… wow. So delicious I almost went back for another. Highlight of the morning.

Stopped back at the hotel to drop off the half-eaten pastries, then popped into a few stores nearby including L’Appartement Sézane and Balzac –
great button-down options (if you like a ruffle), the store was giving J.Crew energy.

Met a friend for lunch at L’Atelier Entrecote & Volaille. Similar to the original L’Entrecote but this one takes reservations and has a burger and chicken option. We split a steak and a burger and both were great. The original is still better, but this scratched the itch. The line there is just too long at the original and New York has one anyway.

That said, everything thinks it’s all about the steak frites, however I had the best creme brulee and raspberry sorbet of my life there back in 2016… I still think about it.

Knocked around the area, including a stop at Ultramod Mercerie – the most beautiful ribbon store. Colors I’ve never seen before.

Dragged my friend to Galeries Lafayette to check the Chanel collection: nothing.

Headed back to the hotel for some quiet time. I was staying at La Fantaisie – it had great style (you know a little over the top but done very tastefully), plus, a very convenient location. But the real draw was the spa in the basement: four different baths, two saunas, and a hammam. I spent about an hour down there, then went fully horizontal.

This, to me, is a key part of vacation. This is your time off – lie down.

Met friends for dinner at LouLou where I insisted on ordering the $60 pavlova and it was absolutely worth it. We ate the entire thing. Bite of the day!

Saturday
Slept in – a lot. Hey, it’s vacation.

Met my friends at Bon Marche to wander and specifically check out the Chanel collection. Better selection than before, but still nothing too exciting. I was also on the hunt for a flat black loafer. I have a pair I live in, but they’re a bit heavy and don’t work with everything. Found a great super simple pair at Chanel… of course, not in my size.

We spent the afternoon knocking around the 6th. I stopped into Maison Ola, a hat store I’d been curious about. I went with a grey rounded-brim hat – I was channeling Madeline. I also tried on a few pillbox styles and loved them, so maybe more hats in the future. She’s a hat girl?!

Rubirosa’s is right next door so we popped in. I had been recently and I just don’t fully get the hype. Yes, the store is beautifully designed and the colors are lovely, so there is that, but I’m not that moved by it. I think it’s the staff…

Grabbed lunch at L’Arret – our friend did the branding!! We support friends here!

After lunch, before splitting up, we stopped by Antoine de Macedo to look at vintage watches. Then I went over to Herve Chapelier. I’ve had one of their totes since 2001 (and brought it with me), and thought it was time for a refresh. I went with the next size up so now I have options. These nylon bags come in great colors and clearly last forever.

I then walked across the Seine to Chanel to check their in-store selection… nothing. Total waste of time.

Met a friend for dinner at an Italian spot called Adela. It was fine. The entire place was filled with French Gen Z girls, so very much a girlies spot.

We finished the night with a drink at my hotel.

Sunday
Okay, I can’t remember exactly how I started the day...I think I had breakfast at the hotel (it came with the room).

I was solo, so I headed over to the Marais. Started by picking up a few pairs of socks at Tabio, a personal favorite from Japan. Then I made an assorted taper candle box at Trudon and picked up a pair of loafers (finally) at Alohas.

For “lunch” I went to Carette (a must for me): hot chocolate, strawberries, and Chantilly cream.

Walked over to Sabre – back in October it was packed and I bailed, but today it was empty. I got six dessert forks and, since they do custom, I did one side lavender and the other tortoise. Also picked up a rice spoon (I cannot find mine) in half light blue, half red-and-white gingham. Have fun.

On my way to the subway I passed a gorgeous jewelry display, went in, and left with earrings and a ring. I never buy jewelry and want to start, so this felt like a good place.

Then I thought, you know what, let’s burn it down and go to Saint Laurent. I’ve been obsessed with the pairing of windbreakers with silk and wanted to see it in person. I really wanted the red/pink jacket but it was sold out. Honestly, a blessing – but I was ready to commit.

Headed back to the hotel to drop everything off, then met my friend for dinner at Bouche in the 11th. It was right next to a slice shop I’ve been wanting to try, so I insisted we go there first for an appetizer. We tried three slices – pepperoni was my favorite. The area felt very Dimes Square, lots of cool kids hanging around.

Ended the night with one final visit to the baths. Headed home the next morning.

Can I just say, no one ever tells me how their weekend was. I live alone and work remotely, please feel free to share!

I’m currently between projects and during these stretches I become a real…sloth. Every day is Saturday. I find I can’t possibly do more than one or two things a day, anything beyond that feels unreasonable. It becomes a very, I can do that tomorrow.

Once you get a taste of not working, you realize how wonderful it is. I actually laugh when people say they could never do it. Oh no, honey… give it a week. The days are gorgeous!

Here’s what I got up to during my – let’s keep it chic: hiatus.

Friday
Slow start at home, then I realized I needed to get my day going. Headed to soho for a blowout at 3, then – you guessed it – stopped by the storage unit. Strictly a drop-off.

Earlier this week I was walking home from Midtown and saw that M&J Trimming is STILL having their going-out-of-business sale. It’s been happening since October 2024. Hey, I’m not complaining. They are finally, finally at 50% off ribbon. What kind of “everything must go” sale is this? We need 80% and this ribbon would fly off the shelves and quite beautifully…

I grabbed a bunch of plaid ribbon, focusing on holiday colors since those will be harder to find at these prices once they close. The guy working there gave me a ton of deals. Highly recommend stopping in.

All that to say: I went to the unit to drop the ribbon on my gift-wrapping shelf.

Headed home and started decorating a cookie order for the next day. Looked up and it was already around 6, so I had to pause.

Met up with a friend for cocktails at Overstory in the Financial District. The setting is a real treat and the cocktails were lovely. The view is bananas and you can even go outside, which we did. We were on the 64th floor, it was very windy, and I don’t love heights, so I went back inside pretty quickly. It was spooky!!!

At one point, a husband sitting to my right would not stop talking to us. I know some people like to socialize at bars, but his wife really should have said, “hon, those women don’t want to talk to you.” The conversation ended pretty quickly when he asked me how I feel about the Middle East three minutes into meeting me. Sir, what? He then let me know he was a republican and I said “yeah I picked that up.” Buzz off bro.

We then met friends at Swan Bar for some “light bites” (when are we retiring this term). I will say, the mini latkes with caviar were divine.

Afterwards we went back to my friend’s apartment to hang a bit longer with McDonald’s. They forgot my apple pie. Suing!!

Saturday
Continued decorating the cookies – they were for my friend’s 50th birthday that evening. Once I finished the order, I cleaned up and headed downtown to drop them off.

Oh, I almost forgot – before I left the house I sat down to watch the BTS concert on Netflix. I had canceled my Netflix a few months ago as a form of protest over the possible WB merger (I am pretty confident they noticed it), but I will absolutely pay $17 for Jimin. Unfortunately, I will and have paid much more for Jimin…

PS if you don’t know who Jimin is…pfft here you go.

Their new album came out on Friday, so they performed some of the new tracks in Seoul. It took me a few listens to get into it, I obviously have notes but it is growing on me. I’ll be seeing them in the most beautiful city in the world Memorial Day Weekend. I’m sorry you don’t know what city I’m talking about? It’s Las Vegas and no I’m not joking. More on my hot take on that in May – I feel pretty confident in saying that will be a good weekend post.

Walked down to 9 Orchard – yes, the same place I was at the night before. I had hoped to grab a slice on the way, but there were lines everywhere. Saturdays in Manhattan have become an absolute nightmare.

Handed off the cookies, then stopped by Sandy Liang. I had a decent amount of store credit from returning the most fantastic dress in the fall (it looked awful on me. And to give myself some credit, the cut was very basic and really only works on one body. Sorry, Sandy. I said it!)

They had the mini pleated skirts (always been a fan) back in stock and, since I’m going out of town next weekend, I picked one up along with a complimentary sweater. With that credit from six months ago, it all felt free. Thank you, Chelsea!

Finally grabbed a slice at an empty spot on the Lower East Side – it was fine, then headed home to get ready for the party.

Earlier this week, my friend and I were figuring out where to eat beforehand. We wanted something low-key. She said, “you can say no, but would you be down for Katz’s?” I haven’t been in years. I let her know I would never say no to that.

After emotionally suffering through the loud man behind me on line, we split a sandwich and fries and then headed to the party.

It was a classic dance party setup – great drinks, another incredible city view, and everyone dancing until midnight. Highlight: a fantastic slice of cake from Mia’s Bakery.

Sunday
Woke up to canceled breakfast plans and immediately thought: all I want is that cake. And yes, I did ask for a slice to go and was denied. I knew my future self would have wanted it.

Had an easy start to the day, then tackled a little DIY kitchen project. I’ve mentioned I’m working on some home updates and the kitchen is first. One of the big items was covering my black backsplash. It is so ugly it makes me sick.

I tested a few peel-and-stick tile options a few weeks ago and landed on a classic white subway tile. It felt like the best fit for the space.

It took a decent amount of time and there were a few challenging areas, really leaned into my BFA, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Once everything is finished I’ll do a full post, but it’s a good reminder that you can improve your home without a full renovation. Maybe you can’t gut the kitchen, but you can find ways to make it feel closer to what you envisioned. For now, in my rental, it’s peel-and-stick tile.

Went for a walk around the neighborhood around 5, then ended the night with a cookie order.

Friday
Started my day at noon with a blowout, then had to meet two friends at Nine Orchard to look at the event space.

On my way there I wanted breakfast, so I stopped by The Smile to go. Since it was 1230 they were already serving lunch (cmon!) and everything looked a bit cumbersome. They had a sprinkle cookie, so I went with that. Just my luck – it was terrible, so I tossed it.

Grabbed a slice at Scarr’s and my luck returned because there was a fresh pie, so it didn’t even need a reheat.

Met my friends at Nine Orchard. One of them is throwing her 50th there next weekend and wanted to walk through the space with fresh eyes. I had never been to the roof before and it was really something. The space is decorated beautifully and the view is bananas. I’ll snap a photo next weekend.

Headed home to get some work done, then finished around 6 to run errands. I needed to pick up a birthday present for a one-year-old and stopped by the hardware store on the way. I got a new showerhead over the holidays that came with a handheld attachment, and TLDR the handheld mount adhesive wasn’t adhering with the tile, so I needed a new type of adhesive.

They suggested a glue, and let me tell you – when I leave a hardware store something comes over me. I’m like nothing can touch me. I could demo my kitchen today. Anything is possible. Meanwhile I left with one thing of glue.

I went up to Kidding Around to pick up the gift for a one year old. I wanted to get her an oversized bunny. There were so many options I really couldn’t decide, then I started worrying the oversized bunny was too oversized and I didn’t know if the parents would appreciate that. Then I was choosing between twenty different bunny options in the next size down and suddenly they felt insignificant, so I pivoted and got a set of farm animals: a bunny, lamb, and chick.

I also felt guilty leaving behind all the bunnies I didn’t choose. All smiling at me with their pink noses.

When I went to pay I even asked the cashier if she thought all the bunnies would be bought for the holiday and so on, she laughed. I’m sorry – did I look like I was making a joke?

Then I walked over to Greenwich Letterpress to pick up a birthday card. While I was there I grabbed a set of the blank stationery cards I like to use for thank-yous. Yes, you should still be sending those.

On my way to the register I noticed they had fake bowls of Fruit Loops, so yeah… I bought one.

Met some friends for dinner in Chinatown at Hwa Yuan, then we headed to a 40th birthday a few blocks away. As we were leaving dinner I got a text from the birthday boy asking if I could pick up some disposable razors (for context: I knew there was a tattoo artist at the party). Unfortunately we didn’t pass any on the way.

I was adamant about finding them, so I left my friends as they headed inside. I just couldn’t show up without them. As someone who hosts parties, I understand the panic of a last-minute needed item, so I felt obligated to find it.

Because of the location and time of night it took a while (apparently I was in a dead zone for corner stores/delis). I ended up walking up toward Soho and finally passed a spot on the way to Spring Market. Bought a box and jumped in a cab because my toes were freezing.

I got in around Mott and Broome and told the driver, “Mott and Canal.” He asked for the exact address.

Okay. I’m going to say this: nothing annoys me more than this. Learn the roads. The drivers in London train for four years. I told him we were just going down Mott and pulling over at Canal – a few blocks straight down.

At nearly every light he asked if we should keep going and I said again, yes, keep going until we hit Canal. The street signs will say Canal. And also, for the love of Christ, how do you not know Canal Street? This world is doomed.

Got to the party, handed off the razors, and hung out there for the rest of the night. Cake slice one of the weekend: Carrot.

Home around 12.

Saturday
Headed to the Upper East Side at 12 for a first birthday. The subway gods were not on my side today and I had to wait about nine minutes for both of my trains. Don’t they know who I am??

When I got to the party the magic show was already in full swing, and I noticed there was face paint (I can sense it from a mile away). I was heavily tempted, but I had plans to go shopping afterwards and showing up to Bergdorf in Spider-Man face paint would have set an odd tone. Why can’t I just be me?

Party tip of the month: my friend’s aunt placed a stack of paper plates under the back end of the sheet cake to give it a tilt. This lets the top of the cake face forward for photos. I was blown away.

Cake slice two of the weekend: Wegmans celebration sheet cake. I went for the chocolate with vanilla frosting. This is usually my preference with the classic options.

After the party I headed down to Bergdorf because I heard they already had the Chanel collection out. AND no one even acknowledged me! Don’t they know who I am?? PT II. And TBH I hate how often that happens there. They didn’t really, so I moved down the street to Chanel.

There was a line and a sales associate approached me to add my name to the list. Before committing I asked if they had the shoes I was looking for. They did not, so I left.

Can I just say: the line is humiliating. It creates this ridiculous façade and it’s offensive. Let’s make people wait to spend money here. I don’t appreciate it.

I then went over to Saks – she’s still standing for now. A salesman approached me by the shoe elevator and told me they’re getting the shoes on Tuesday and put a pair on hold for me (no guarantees). But significantly better service.

I just need one pair so when I do my closet tour I can say, “and of course here are the slingbacks from Matthieu Blazy’s debut SS ’26 collection.”

Took the bus home and stayed in for the rest of the night.

Sunday
Baked a batch of cookies to give my family later. I went with a recipe I had made during the holidays. They were a big hit! (the recipe doesn’t ask for this but I coat the bottom of each cookie with a layer of melted dark chocolate)

Met my parents in Midtown (they had been at a birthday) and drove back with them to Westchester for dinner and a show. The show being: the Oscars. The most sacred day of the year. On the way there I was seeing everyone arriving and thought to myself, wow, people are getting there early.

Cake slice three (unplanned) of the weekend: From Lucie chocolate cake. This has become my favorite chocolate cake in the city. (We shared this one.)

We decided to make a little steakhouse dinner, and as we were finishing up cooking I looked at the TV and saw Timmy walking the carpet. Hmm… 655 EST? That feels early for him. Then suddenly Deathly Hallows Part I was playing on E! and I said wait – something’s not right. I ran over to the TV, switched it to ABC, and there it was: the Oscars. How long has it been on at 7? (Turns out, since 2024) But we didn’t even have dinner yet. This is a disaster.

We put the show on pause (god bless DVR) and enjoyed dinner. At one point my dad went for seconds and I told him that was unacceptable.

Cake slice four of the weekend: homemade funfetti cake with cookies-and-cream frosting as a belated birthday for one of my brothers.

We eventually sat down and fast-forwarded through every commercial break of the entire show. Did we miss anything?

Overall thoughts:

• I liked Conan hosting. He gave us some good laughs in the opening monologue.

• I would have loved to see Marty win for costume and casting. I thought they did some really unique work there, but here we are.

• The In Memoriam was very moving but also quite long, which makes me feel weird when people like the writers of Golden can’t properly give a speech.

• Okay, we have to talk about Timmy. He’s been driving me nuts since A Complete Unknown. Let this please be a wake-up call for him to just do less. The voting was already closed before the whole ballet thing – just sit down and be quiet. And please get a new stylist, and please lose the facial hair. We are so tired. Also wild how since Kylie he has looked worse and worse while she somehow looks better and better (minus the hair last night - hon).

• PS: when was the last time Leo looked this good? He should have swapped that awful goatee for a mustache years ago.

Took a late train back into the city since I was expecting an early delivery the next morning.

Is everyone feeling alive? More daylight and warmer weather – it feels like everyone had a fresh start today. Isn’t winter my favorite season? Yes. But I still enjoy when it gets warm. Seasons are beautiful; they’re such a clear reminder of time and change.

I ended up getting slammed with some last-minute work, so there’s not a ton to report, but here we are.

Friday
Kicked off the day with a few meetings, then quickly ran out for my hair appointment. What a waste that turned out to be with the fog – the number one kryptonite for my hair.

On my way home I stopped by McNally Jackson to pick up a new book. I’ve been spending way too much time on my phone, so I figured a new book might pull me away from it.

I picked up Dungeon Crawler Carl – felt like it was time to start a new series.

Then I called my brother and asked if there was any romance involved. He said, “I’m on book four and…nothing so far.”

What the hell kind of book series is this?! Even sci-fi usually has a little something…

On my home I grabbed lunch and my favorite cookie at Olive’s.

I ended up needing to cancel my evening plans because of work, so I was at my desk until around 10. I did manage an evening walk to pick up some dinner. I’ve been trying this new rule where if I want delivery, I actually have to go get it. Make myself work for it a little.

And honestly, I think it tastes better that way. There’s more buildup. The most ideal scenario? Picking up Chinese food in the rain. That wonton soup hits differently.

Saturday
Slept in and walked over to Equinox for a class at 12. Headed home afterwards to get some work done and wrapped up around 5.

My shoulder blades/upper back have been killing me - too much desk! So I went downstairs to Shun Fa for a 30 minute massage. That place is a bit wild but it gets the job done for the right amount of money.

Caught up on some TV, then headed out around 10 for a birthday. I wanted to bring a sweet treat but left a little late. Little Cupcake was still open, so I walked over there, but as I touched the handle I suddenly felt like it wasn’t the right option. A gift box from BonBon felt easier and like something people could enjoy the next day, versus cupcakes disappearing at the party.

It was my friend’s birthday – she and her twin threw a giant party in Brooklyn. Okay social queen!

The low of the night was learning that when it is your animal in the new year, it actually means it is not your year. So naturally I had a meltdown. All this inspiring Year of the Horse messaging just for me to discover I’m apparently supposed to shelter indoors. What am I to do now?!

At the end of the night a friend offered me a ride home and I couldn’t believe it. What a thrill. I love a ride, and being in a car with friends in the city is always such a fun little delight.

Sunday
Happy Daylight Saving! Ay yi yi – this day is always a mess.

I signed up for a stretching class at Equinox and I’m starting to think this should become a weekly activity.

Afterwards I grabbed a slice at Fermento, then headed to Nordic Knots. I went last year to browse carpets and never made a decision, so it felt like time to start over. Before I got there I was still hungry, so I grabbed another slice at Lucia (lol). It was $6.80. What the hell is going on?

One thing I do really like about Lucia is that they sell canned Gatorade. Very rare.

Picked up a few swatches, then walked over to Chanel on Wooster. I wanted to see the new collection in person only to find out it won’t be in New York until March 17th. Okay, see ya then!

On the way home I took my jacket off (could it be?!) – what a delight to have some warmer weather.

Headed home briefly and tested out the carpet swatches. The ones I liked for the kitchen suddenly made me worry they weren’t working with the rest of the room. That led me to ask: do I get this rug and then change my pillows and cushions to match?

That feels…extreme.

So I’m going to take a moment and think about it.

Then met a friend at Old Town (wearing a skirt with NO tights!) for dinner before finally seeing Wuthering Heights at AMC. I never finished the book (listen, it is hard for me to always..understand what’s going on), but now I want to so I can see the differences.

I know it didn’t get great reviews, but I was quite entertained. The set design was incredible and it was beautifully shot. My biggest issue was some of the costumes – very overly shiny, modern fabric. I was extremely confused by that decision.

Jacob… looked great.

Happy March. I’m sure I said this last year, though I’m a girl who refuses to look at the past (as if, although maybe this could be the new me), but I really do think March is the ugliest month of the year. Someone has to be. It’s a tough one: still cold, somehow damper, perpetually gray, and the outfits are confusing. The upside? Daylight saving time is next week. We did it!

Friday
Let’s start with the dramatics: I was tossing and turning all night. I had a fever. What was I going to do? A damsel in distress all alone!

By 4A I decided to take some medicine and ended up sleeping until noon. By then the fever seemed to have disappeared. Could it all have been an elusive dream?

I worked from bed and didn’t leave the house until 7. It’s amazing how the day oddly drags when you start it so late. Looking at the clock and seeing it’s already 4 with nothing to report, yet somehow feeling exhausted, is a unique experience. Anyone else?

I finally left at 7 to meet friends at Julius. A dear friend is spending a few months in Paris, so he was hosting a little bon voyage. We got there early to secure a table and shared a greasy dinner.

Left around 1030 to get a better night’s sleep.

Saturday
Okay, I really leaned into today being the first day of the rest of my life. Like last week was finally the start of my new year. It began with a good night’s sleep and a full “blood-flow reset”.

I had an acupuncture and cupping appointment at 1130 at WTHN. It’s fine there. I don’t love the “millennial VC wellness spaces”, but they get the job done. I’ve been feeling sore since the party breakdown and snow shoveling, so I needed a little adjustment.

I’ve officially lived in this apartment for five years this March, and I’m finally committing to some updates. I’ve mentioned this before, new rugs, reupholstering and this is the year it happens! I am putting it in writing!

The list:
Living room

• New rug

• Reupholster couch and chairs (x2) I’ve had the chairs since 2009 and the couch since 2012 - it is overdue.

Kitchen

• New rug (yes, she’s a kitchen rug girl. TBH, I hate the tile, so I want one large enough to cover most of it)

• Curtain to cover the dishwasher (it’s hideous and I use it as storage)

Bedroom

• New mattress

• Replace my full-length mirror (it was supposed to be temporary… it’s been five years)

I’m feeling overwhelmed sourcing fabrics, so I decided to start with the easier task: mattress.

I headed to the Saatva showroom and wow–what a strange experience. A bunch of strangers lying on mattresses in activewear. Couples pretending to sleep. Get me out of here. I couldn’t stop thinking about that SNL sketch.

After testing them all, I landed on the “Saatva Classic, 11.5” Luxury Firm”. Okay, sure. My main complaint was the salesman kept saying my name too loudly “how are we feeling about the foam top Chelsea?” I don’t need anyone in Saatva knowing anything about me - thank you!!!

While texting outside, I ran into my friend who threw the going-away party. We took a short walk and grabbed salads at Sweetgreen. Shared a final goodbye! Then I popped into Paragon to get a few pairs of insoles for my running and gym sneakers. The bottoms of my feet have been hurting during classes and runs, so as part of my “fresh start,” I’m fixing another problem. She does it all!

Headed home briefly, then, of course–to my storage unit. It was quick, I swear! I dropped off the remaining party items from the cleaners: the heart dress and tablecloth. Grabbed an afternoon treat at Homie’s. Last time I was here they didn’t have the jelly. This time…they did!

Walked over to Vanity Projects for a manicure. I’m still on edge from the nail drama last summer and keeping a close eye on things. Slightly worried this is just “part of me” now.

On my way home I grabbed a slice at Upside, then stumbled upon the soon-to-open Go Greek. I overheard last fall that it was coming – when I interrupted two girls on line to ask where they heard that. Sorry, but I needed confirmation.

For those who don’t know, Go Greek is a California-based Greek frozen yogurt shop. The yogurt is unbelievable. The best I’ve ever had. Anyone who’s had it knows. It’s also like $20, which is insane. Think Sixteen Handles format but elevated Greek yogurt, mostly fruit toppings, a few fun extras, nothing too chaotic. They also sell regular non-frozen greek yogurt. But who cares about that?!

This will be their first New York location. This will be the summer of my life. Financially ruined by frozen yogurt.

Spent the rest of the night at home which is exactly what I wanted. I watched Heat for the first time. Al Pacino was absolutely unhinged. What a kooky little man. But the cinematography? Just divine.

Sunday
Woke up at 11 to the cat crying outside my door. I let him in and climbed back into bed. He followed, curled up beside me, and we both fell back asleep. I looked up the definition of blessed and it was this picture:

After emotionally spiraling over how I needed to leave this moment, I got up around noon. The cat was completely passed out. I tried making the bed around him, but he too accepted it was time to start the day. We both left the apartment at 130.

I was heading to meet my friend’s new baby, so I picked up a dozen bagels and assorted cream cheeses for her family. Then I stopped at Lucky Wang for gifts for the newborn and the older brother. If you haven’t been, it’s a funky kids’ store in Chelsea with great taste. The clothes lean more gender-neutral (still very fun), and the book and stuffed animal selection is especially good – really unique pieces.

Took the 2 to Brooklyn to meet her for a Marketplace pickup, then we headed back to her place in the East Village to snack on bagels and the baby.

Afterwards she requested cake, so I suggested From Lucie. We devoured a slice of Victoria sponge and a mini chocolate cake , which now having for the second time I think is my favorite there.

After we parted ways, I picked up flowers at Sunny’s on 6th and 2nd, then took the 102 bus to Midtown. My friend was hosting her annual Ramadan iftar and I was so happy to attend. Her mom makes an incredible Egyptian feast. It fully reminded me how much I want to visit Egypt.

Headed home at 9, in fact, I said, “I have to go write the Substack.” Caught the M3 downtown and had the entire bus to myself.

Bites of the week:

• Plain Yogurt, Birdies - also they had a very good candy selection AND it was designed well. Plus the owner was working the yogurt machine and very friendly. This store is Chelsea approved!

Here’s what we did:
I started officially planning over holiday break. First, I wrote down every idea and task. Then I reorganized everything in the order it needed to happen (for example: ordering ice is day of, while ordering balloons can be done a month in advance). The biggest undertaking? Decorations. So I began there.

I always look back on the year before and ask myself where can I make things easier? What can I afford to do?

The past few years, I’ve handled the flowers myself–something I genuinely love. But waking up at 5A the week of the party to run to the market and assemble everything the day-of or before? The stress and mess start to compete with the fun.

This year, I decided to hand it off.

I reached out to Maka Flora in early January to secure the date before the Valentine’s rush. I sent over inspiration and outlined exactly what I wanted: two sculptural arrangements using only red flowers–one for the kitchen and one for the living room.

Booked. Confirmed. Check. Moving on!

Sometime last year, I came up with the visual concept for the party: cover the entire apartment in paper hearts. To pull that off, I did what I always do: worked backward. If you want a party to feel effortless, every detail has to be mapped out in advance, from the last fork placed to the invite sent.

The Materials:
To create this look, I needed:

• Paper hearts

• Ribbon

• Tape

• Hot glue

The concept was simple: cut ribbon pieces, tape them to the back of each heart, create a small loop at the top with hot glue, run scotch tape through the loop, and stick it to the ceiling. Because the materials are lightweight, standard tape works perfectly.

I sourced the hearts from Etsy–a mix of sizes, textures, and shades within my palette. Around December 27th, I ordered about 2,000 hearts. It sounds excessive. It wasn’t.

To add depth and dimension, I layered in paper honeycomb hearts, mylar heart garlands, and glitter heart strands between the flat paper pieces.

The Math (Yes, There Was Math)
I measured from the ceiling to determine how low I wanted the hearts to hang. The goal: visible in photos but not blocking faces. I landed on an average of 3 feet.

36 inches (per ribbon) × 2,000 hearts = 72,000 inches of ribbon.

A completely reasonable situation.

I ordered spools from Amazon, Etsy, and Michaels–mixing textures, materials, and colors for variation.

Once the ribbon arrived, I cut it into varying lengths to create movement across the ceiling. Each strand was attached to a heart using festive washi tape (from washitape.com).

This took up the second half of holiday break.

Installation
On January 10th, installation began.

It quickly became clear this was… ambitious. There were moments of regret asking myself out loud “Oh what have I done?”. After two full days of taping hearts to the ceiling, I realized I was running out.

I had planned this amount for the entire apartment. I hadn’t even finished the kitchen. This is why you start early. It leaves room to pivot.

I decided the kitchen would be the only paper heart room. I realized I had all these extra mylar hearts (the amount i had of those was correct), so, I draped about 50 heart garlands across the living room ceiling, creating what I started calling the “heart fountain.” During a marathon of Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Interiors, it all came together.

The remaining garlands were taped along the hallway walls, and I ordered 30 pink balloons to fill the ceiling in that space for a soft, floating effect. (yeah so I forgot to photograph this)

Ten days later, I returned to finish applying the rest of the hearts. After a few more films and a lot more tape, it was complete.

A few other January to-dos:

• Design and send the invite by January 14th. Sent.

• Create and upload the playlist to YouTube. She went live January 31.

• Decide what I’m wearing. Chosen and at the tailor.

• Book party support. Confirmed.

Hello, February.
With the decor complete, it was time to focus on the food.

When I first started planning, I reviewed last year’s menu and made cuts. As much as I love abundance, not every guest eats 30 cookies. What?! To simplify things, I decided to serve half the number of cookies compared to last year and added options that didn’t require baking.

The first new idea: a chocolate buffet. It felt almost ridiculous that I’d never featured a large heart-shaped chocolate box before–it’s practically the symbol of Valentine’s Day.

In January, I started sourcing vintage lace-trimmed chocolate heart boxes on eBay. My one requirement: ruffles along the edges. After securing three, I brought them to See’s Candies on the first of the month.

The staff was incredible. They loved the concept and even offered to place all the chocolates directly into the vintage boxes. I gave them a list of specific flavors, and they handled the rest. Pickup was set for the 12th.

They were especially grateful I came in two weeks before Valentine’s Day–consider that your reminder to plan ahead.

The next thirteen days were mapped out with precision. Each day had a specific assignment: make a dough, order candles, call Balloon Saloon to confirm delivery, visit the storage unit, and so on.

Planning this far in advance makes an event of this scale feel completely manageable. At first, the vision can seem overwhelming–almost impossible. And when you don’t prepare, the day-of turns into chaos.

But spacing it out and checking off one task at a time changes everything. By the time the party arrives, there’s no scrambling–just enjoying what you built.
