We often think of family photographs as things we inherit, familiar faces that sit quietly in albums and boxes, gradually becoming part of the background of our lives. But what happens when that photograph suddenly appears somewhere completely unexpected?

discovered exactly that when a photograph she had known all her life showing her family in Harbin in the late 1930s, appeared in an online group dedicated to the city’s Russian émigré community. The discovery led to conversations with strangers, previously unknown relatives and ultimately years of research that would become a published family story.

It’s a beautiful reminder that photographs don’t just preserve the past; sometimes they help us find the people who were lost within it.

A DNA percentage, a date, a number of descendants, even a Substack view count, can tell us what happened, but rarely tells us the story behind the number.

The number may be interesting. The human story is where the meaning lies.

Sometimes the record you aren’t looking for is the one that changes everything.

had largely ignored her Swedish branch for years. Then she came across a small newspaper clipping in Swedish and, out of curiosity, translated it.

What she discovered was that her fourth great-grandfather, Sven Johnsson Sol, had been murdered in 1851.

Suddenly, a relatively obscure ancestor on a family tree became a man with a life, a family, a difficult existence and a violent death. Even more remarkably, his own brother and a local constable were named as suspects.

Juliet’s investigation is a wonderful example of genealogy becoming detective work, but I particularly admire what happens when the evidence runs out. She doesn’t manufacture an ending. She leaves the unanswered questions where they belong waiting in an archive she can’t yet access.

Because sometimes telling the story honestly means admitting that we don’t know how it ends.

This week we have been reminded that the past is not simply contained within the records we can find. It exists in the things people said, the things they never said, the photographs that survived, the people who almost disappeared, and the questions that remain unanswered. We have seen the value of preserving our own stories, of looking beyond the obvious sources, of sharing what we discover and, perhaps most importantly, of knowing when the evidence asks us to stop rather than invent an ending. Because every week we search for the stories behind the records, we are also deciding which stories will continue to be remembered. And that is what makes this journey so worthwhile. Chiddicks Family Tree

Every family historian eventually encounters a name that refuses to let go.

This is the story of one such name.

It began with a discarded probate ledger and became an investigation that led through archives, newspapers and official records, gradually revealing the life of a woman who had almost disappeared from history.

More than anything, it reminded me that genealogy isn’t simply about discovering our own ancestors. Sometimes it’s about restoring someone else’s story.

The Book

Some books are treasured. Others are simply lucky to survive. This was one of them.

It was rescued from a skip when an old solicitor’s office in Cheshire was being cleared. To most people it would have looked like just another unwanted ledger, too old to be useful and too worn to be worth keeping.

My friend saw something different.

He had no idea what was inside. He simply couldn’t bear to see an old book thrown away. So he picked it up and took it home. Some time later, he passed it on to me. It joined the other old books on my shelves and, for a while, stayed there untouched.

When I picked it up, it was heavier than I expected, bound in dark leather that had softened with age. The corners were worn smooth from years of handling, and the spine had begun to crack where it had been opened thousands of times before. When I lifted the cover, the familiar smell of old paper drifted out. Anyone who has spent time around old books knows it instantly. It is the smell of paper, dust and time. The pages had yellowed with age, their edges darkened by years of use.

It wasn’t an official probate register. It was a solicitor’s working ledger, its pages filled with handwritten drafts prepared before the final probate documents were typed. I wondered who had opened it before me.

Solicitors.

Clerks.

For years it must have sat on a desk within easy reach, opened and closed almost every day as solicitors drafted probate documents by hand. Then, somehow, it had outlived the people who wrote in it, survived the office that housed it and found its way into a skip.

Eventually, I opened it.

The Address

I wasn’t looking for anyone in particular. I simply wanted to see what had been preserved inside. The book fell open on a page, it was a handwritten draft dated 5 April 1921. My eyes drifted down the page. It wasn’t the name that caught my attention.

It was the address.

3, Park Estate, South Ockendon, Essex.

I recognised it immediately.

South Ockendon wasn’t just another village on a map. Although I had never lived there, I knew it well. My Chiddicks ancestors had lived there for more than 150 years.

Over the years I had spent countless hours researching its families, its streets and its history. I had even worked there for a time. It was hard to believe that I was sitting in Cheshire with a solicitor’s ledger rescued from a skip, staring at an address more than two hundred miles away in a village I knew so well.

Only then did my eyes return to the top of the page. The name was Edith Kate Done. I had never heard of her. Yet somehow she was connected to a village I knew so well.

I needed to find out who she was.

The Name

The probate draft had given me very little to work with. A name. An address. A date. It was enough.

My first step was to order Edith’s death record from the General Register Office. I ordered her birth record as well. Between those two records lay an entire lifetime.

It wasn’t long before both records were available to download. I opened the birth record first. If I was going to understand Edith’s life, it seemed the obvious place to begin.

She had been born on 15 January 1883 in Bettisfield, Flintshire. The surname Done wasn’t hers at birth. Somewhere between the day she was born and the day she died, her life had taken another path. To understand Edith, I first needed to discover who she had married.

The Marriage

The birth record told me that Edith Kate Done had been born Edith Kate Huxley. The obvious next step was to find her marriage.

On 7 November 1904, at Ellesmere Register Office, Edith Kate Huxley married Charles Done. Charles was no longer just a name on a certificate. He was about to become part of Edith’s story. I knew almost nothing about him.

Who was he?

Where had he come from?

What kind of life had he and Edith built together?

The marriage certificate provided the first few clues. Charles was a labourer, living in Ellesmere. Edith was twenty-two years old. Like thousands of other young couples at the beginning of the twentieth century, they stood together before the registrar and began married life with every reason to believe the future lay ahead of them. On paper, there was nothing to suggest that their marriage would be anything other than ordinary.

The records would soon tell a very different story.

The Divorce Papers

Until that point, everything I knew about Edith and Charles came from the usual family history records.

Births.

Marriage.

Census returns.

Each added another small piece to the puzzle, but none hinted that their lives had been anything other than ordinary. Then I discovered something I hadn’t expected. There had been divorce proceedings.

I managed to obtain the divorce papers. At first, I assumed they would do little more than confirm that the marriage had ended.

I was wrong.

Instead, they opened a window into a life that had been hidden for more than a century. The bundle contained petitions, affidavits and witness statements. These weren’t simply legal documents. They were the voices of the people who had lived through the marriage.

As I began reading, one thing became immediately clear. The marriage certificate had recorded the day Edith and Charles’s life together began. These papers explained how it unravelled.

I began reading the papers slowly. Each page added another piece to the story. Taken individually, they seemed little more than statements made in support of a divorce. Together, they painted a very different picture. This was no ordinary marital disagreement.

As I worked through the papers, names, dates and places began to emerge. I unfolded the petition and began to read. At first it followed the familiar language of legal documents, setting out names, dates and addresses. Then the allegations began.

The petition stated that Charles Done had treated Edith “with great unkindness and cruelty.”

Those few words prepared me for what followed. The formal language could not disguise the violence it described. One allegation claimed that Charles had “violently assaulted and kicked the Petitioner and pushed her out of the house.”

Another alleged that he had “habitually assaulted your Petitioner, blackening her eyes and bruising her body.”

I stopped reading for a moment.

Until now, Edith had existed only through certificates, census returns and official records. Now, for the first time, I was hearing her voice through the legal system. This was no longer simply a family history. It was the story of a woman who had endured years of violence behind closed doors.

Among all the allegations, one in particular was difficult to read.

“...dragged your Petitioner out of bed by her hair... stood over her with a razor and threatened to cut her throat.”

Even after more than a century, the words retained their power. The petition revealed that the violence was only part of the story. It also alleged repeated adultery.

One passage stated that Winifred Florence Cornes had been:

“...delivered of a child... of which the said Charles Done is the father.”

The marriage certificate I had found only a short time earlier had marked the beginning of Edith and Charles’s life together. The divorce petition revealed just how completely that promise had been broken.

The Headlines

The divorce petition revealed what Edith had alleged. I wanted to know how those allegations had been reported at the time.

A search of the local newspapers soon uncovered several accounts of the case. Reading them felt very different from reading the legal papers. The petition had spoken in the measured language of the law. The newspapers told the story through the voices of the people who had witnessed it. For the first time, I could follow the events as they had unfolded more than a century earlier.

The first report appeared in the Nantwich Guardian on 22 June 1917 beneath the striking headline:

The report echoed many of the allegations contained in the divorce petition but added detail that only a newspaper reporter could provide. Edith described years of violence, black eyes, bruises and repeated assaults. She spoke of leaving Charles, only to return after promises that he would change. Those promises, she explained, were quickly broken.

The newspaper also introduced new voices. Neighbours described hearing screams of “Murder” coming from the house in Moorfields. One recalled seeing Edith running into the street as Charles followed behind her. Another witness described seeing a man intervene to stop a further assault.

Finally came the evidence of Police Constable Crowther, who found Edith with a badly swollen eye and blood on her cheek after she sought refuge at the police station late one evening.

Reading the newspaper, I realised I was no longer relying solely on Edith’s petition. Her account was being supported by neighbours, police officers and other witnesses who had appeared before the magistrates. One detail in the report caught my attention for a very different reason.

The events were said to have taken place at 29 Moorfields, Willaston.

I stopped reading.

Moorfields wasn’t simply another address on another historical record. It was the road where I now live.

Of all the places Edith’s story might have led me, I never expected it to arrive quite so close to home. For a moment, the distance between past and present seemed to disappear.

The Nantwich Guardian reported the separation proceedings in 1917. More than a year later, another newspaper carried the final chapter. The national newspaper The People, published on 24 November 1918, reported that Edith had petitioned for divorce on the grounds of cruelty and misconduct. Many of the details were familiar. But one sentence stood above all the others.

“A decree nisi was pronounced.”

After years of violence, broken promises and public court hearings, Edith’s marriage to Charles Done was finally coming to an end. The newspapers had done more than report a court case. They had restored Edith’s voice. For the first time since opening the probate ledger, I no longer felt I was researching a name. I was following the life of someone I had come to know.

The Unexpected Move

The newspapers marked the end of Edith’s marriage. They did not mark the end of her story. Once the divorce proceedings were over, I found myself asking a simple question.

What happened next?

I expected Edith to remain close to the places that had shaped so much of her life Crewe, Willaston, Nantwich.

Instead, the trail led somewhere I never expected. The next record I discovered showed that Edith had left Cheshire altogether. She had moved more than two hundred miles away. It was a surprising discovery. People certainly moved in the early twentieth century, but after spending so long following Edith through the familiar streets of Crewe and Willaston, I had almost assumed her story would continue there.

It didn’t.

I looked again at the address to make sure I had read it correctly. South Ockendon. I stared at the address for a moment. The village name was instantly familiar.

Not because of Edith. Because of my own family.

Long before I ever discovered Edith Kate Done, my own ancestors had lived there for more than a century. Of all the places her story could have taken me after leaving Cheshire, it had arrived in a village that already formed part of my own family history.

South Ockendon was a long way from the places Edith had called home. Nothing I had discovered so far suggested any obvious connection with Essex. There were no known relatives, no familiar addresses and no clues to explain why she had travelled there. The move raised more questions than it answered.

Why had she travelled so far?

Was she starting again?

Had she gone there alone?

Or was someone waiting for her?

Whatever had brought Edith to South Ockendon, it soon became clear that she hadn’t simply moved. She had started again.

The next records revealed that Edith had begun training as a midwife at the Plaistow Maternity Hospital in London. It was an unexpected discovery. After everything I had learned about her troubled marriage, I had assumed the years that followed would simply be a struggle to survive. Instead, Edith had chosen a profession dedicated to helping others.

For the first time, she seemed to be charting her own path, away from the darkness of her marriage and towards a life filled with new possibilities.

The hospital records, preserved by Barts Health NHS Trust, provided an extraordinary glimpse into this new chapter of her life. Thanks to the help of their archivist, Kate Jarman, I was able to follow Edith’s progress through her training.

She began her basic training on 13 March 1919, initially based at 17 Howards End, which formed part of the Plaistow Maternity Hospital. Training was demanding. The records show that Edith sat her Central Midwives Board examination in November 1919 but did not pass on her first attempt.

She tried again.

On 14 February 1920, she successfully passed the examination and was awarded her Central Midwives Board certificate in Midwifery. I smiled when I read that entry. After everything Edith had endured, it would have been easy to overlook what those few words represented. This wasn’t simply an examination result.

It was proof that she had rebuilt her life.

The Death Certificate

Edith’s future finally seemed to be taking shape. She had left Cheshire. Qualified as a midwife. Built a new life for herself. I couldn’t help wondering where that new beginning might lead. The next record answered the question.

It wasn’t the one I was expecting. It was Edith’s death certificate. She died on 5 April 1921 at The London Hospital. She was just thirty-five years old. The cause of death was recorded simply as diabetes.

I’d spent the previous chapter watching Edith rebuild her life. Now, without warning, it had come to an end. The certificate held one detail I couldn’t explain. The informant wasn’t a relative or a friend.

It was K. Mansfield, whose address was given as Canning Town Police Station. Immediately, more questions emerged.

Why was a police officer, or someone connected with the station, present?

Had Edith died alone?

Had there been an incident beforehand?

Or was K. Mansfield simply the official who happened to be there?

The records offer no answers. Some mysteries remain exactly that. Five days later, Edith was buried in South Ockendon Cemetery, section 2, Plot 56. The plot has no headstone, nothing marks the place where she was laid to rest.

Edith died intestate. Without leaving a will, which meant her affairs passed into the hands of the Probate Registry.

It was a strangely fitting discovery. The very record that had first introduced me to Edith was now there at the end of her story too.

The book had, quite literally, come full circle.

When I first opened that discarded probate ledger, Edith Kate Done was little more than a name. A few words in fading ink.

Since then, the records had revealed a daughter.

A wife.

A victim of abuse.

A woman determined to start again.

A qualified midwife.

Her life had been brief. Much of it will always remain beyond our reach. But she is no longer just another forgotten entry in an old book. She has her story back.

Closing The Book

By the time I reached the end of Edith’s story, I realised something had changed. Not the records. Not the faded ink on the pages of an old probate ledger.

Me.

The records never answered every question. They never could. Some mysteries always remain.

Why South Ockendon?

Why was K. Mansfield the informant?

What was Edith thinking during those final months of her life?

History is often like that. We inherit fragments, not certainty. But the records gave me something more valuable than answers. They gave Edith back her voice.

I closed the probate ledger where the journey had begun. Edith’s name was still there, written in the same fading ink. Nothing on the page had changed.

But everything behind it had.

And perhaps that is what stays with me after this week’s collection. Our stories are shaped by choices, preserved in unexpected places and often discovered in the smallest fragments of evidence. A letter, a court record, a gravestone, a photograph or even a box deliberately sealed away for fifty years can become the starting point for understanding a life. We can use new technology to help us, but we still have to ask the questions, weigh the evidence and decide what the story means. And perhaps that is our real role as family historians, not simply to find what has been left behind, but to make sure those fragments are understood and carried forward.

Next week, we’ll open another set of doors into the past, following more clues, more stories and, no doubt, a few more unexpected discoveries along the way. Until then, keep looking beyond the obvious, keep asking the difficult questions, and keep telling the stories that deserve to be remembered.

Chiddicks Family Tree

A single sentence. A name scribbled in the margin. A tiny detail that, at first glance, seems almost insignificant.

And sometimes, more than a century later, that tiny detail refuses to let you go.

In my case, it was a tattoo.

“I Love F. Bevens.”

Those words were written on the military medical examination record of a young man called John Edwin Barnes, when he enlisted in the British Army in 1906.

John wasn’t just another name in my family tree.

He was my great-grandfather.

I’ve known about the tattoo for years. In fact, I wrote about John back in 2019, tracing his military career, his family, his service and, as best I could, the life he left behind.

But there was one question I couldn’t answer.

Who was F. Bevens?

Was she a sweetheart? A girlfriend? Someone he hoped to marry? A childhood friend? Or was the tattoo the romantic declaration that it appears to be?

For years, F. Bevens remained just that: an initial and a surname attached to a mystery. Recently, I decided to have another look. I wasn’t expecting to solve it. In fact, I’m still not sure that I have.

But somewhere along the way, a woman began to emerge from the records who fits the clues rather better than anyone I’ve found before.

Her name was Florence Ann Bevans.

And what followed was one of those genealogy journeys that reminds me exactly why I love doing this in the first place.

The Tattoo

The starting point for all of this is a rather unremarkable looking Army attestation paper.

John enlisted into the Essex Regiment on 19 October 1906. He was recorded as 17 years and 4 months old, although we now know he was actually a little younger than that. He gave his occupation as a carman, and his address was 66 Hansworth Street, Canning Town.

And then, among the scars and other distinguishing marks recorded during his medical examination, there it was.

“I Love F. Bevens.”

The examiner added:

“front of L. forearm.”

That’s it.

Those words have survived for more than a century and, for years, left me completely stumped. There was no explanation. No surname I recognised. No accompanying letter or photograph. No family story handed down through the generations to tell me who F. Bevens was.

Just those words, permanently written into my great-grandfather’s skin.

I’ve often wondered what possessed a young man to have such a declaration tattooed on his arm. At seventeen, perhaps it seemed like a perfectly sensible thing to do. Anyone who has ever been young, hopelessly smitten and convinced that a particular person will be part of their life forever will understand the sentiment.

Of course, life has a habit of making fools of our certainty.

But was this even a woman?

That was one of the first questions I had to ask.

F. Bevens.

One initial, one surname.

And absolutely no idea who they belonged to.

But What If F. Bevens Wasn’t a Sweetheart?

The obvious interpretation of “I Love F. Bevens” is that F. was a woman John was romantically involved with. But I didn’t want to make that assumption. After all, tattoos don’t always tell the story we think they do.

Could F. Bevens have been a close friend? Someone John had known since childhood? A family member? Perhaps even a nickname or an inside joke between friends? And then there was another possibility.

What if F. wasn’t a woman at all?

John was a young man on the brink of military service, and the tattoo was already on his arm when he enlisted. Could it have been connected to a friend, a fellow soldier or some sort of military association? I considered the possibility of a bet or dare, too. Young men and questionable decisions have been going hand in hand for rather longer than tattoos have existed. Perhaps John and a friend had challenged one another to do something foolish, and “I Love F. Bevens” was the result.

It was possible.

But there was nothing in John’s military records to support it. So I looked elsewhere.

If F. Bevens was somebody locally well known, perhaps he or she was a sporting personality, performer or theatrical figure. Canning Town and the surrounding East End had no shortage of entertainers, sporting clubs and local personalities, and John was living right in the middle of it.

I explored those possibilities too. Again, nothing convincing emerged. There were plenty of people with an initial F. Plenty of Bevens, Bevans and similarly spelled surnames. But finding a name is easy.

Finding a connection is the difficult part.

And that became my guiding principle.

I wasn’t looking for somebody who merely could have been F. Bevens. I was looking for somebody who had a credible reason to have known John Barnes in Canning Town in 1906.

The more possibilities I tested, the more the same problem kept appearing. There was no evidence. No connection to John. No shared address. No family relationship. No military link. Nothing that could take a name from possible to plausible.

So, gradually, those avenues were put to one side.

I was beginning to realise that if I was ever going to solve this mystery, I needed to stop asking:

“Who could F. Bevens have been?”

and start asking:

“Who was actually around John?”

That brought me back to Canning Town. And eventually, back to the census.

Following the Trail

The first thing I discovered was that John’s address mattered. As it turned out, it would prove to be crucial.

When he enlisted in October 1906, John Edwin Barnes was living at 66 Hansworth Street, Canning Town. His attestation also tells us that he had been living in the Canning Town area during the preceding year.

So I had my first real clue.

Canning Town. Perhaps F. Bevens was local.

Perhaps he or she was somebody John had known before he joined the Army. Perhaps their paths had crossed through work, family, friends or simply the everyday life of a busy East London neighbourhood.

I started searching.

And, as so often happens with genealogy, the first useful clue didn’t come from the person I was looking for at all. It came from a 1911 census return.

I’d found the Bevans household while searching the area and began looking closely at the names recorded on the page. The census was anything but straightforward. There were names crossed out, additions, amendments and notes written across the entries.

And there, among them, was a name crossed out that caught my eye.

Florrie Bevans

The handwriting wasn’t entirely clear.

My first thought was obvious.

Could this be her?

Was this the mysterious F. Bevens?

At that point, I had no idea.

I didn’t know who she was, where she had come from, whether she belonged to the family or even whether I was reading the name correctly. But I had something I hadn’t had before.

A possible person.

So I started pulling at the thread. The more closely I examined the census, the more complicated it became. George Bevans had initially included several people on the return, but some entries had subsequently been crossed out, with “does not live here” written across them.

That was important.

Florrie wasn’t actually living in the household. But if George had thought she should be included, there had to be a reason.

Who was she? And why was she connected to this family?

I could have left it there.

Instead, I did what genealogists do when presented with a problem, I began reconstructing the family on the census.

Who was George Bevans?

Who was his wife?

Who were the children?

Where had they come from?

And that was when the investigation took its first unexpected turn. Because the further I went back, the more I began to realise that Florrie/Florence wasn’t simply a name on a census page. She was part of a much bigger family story.

And somewhere within that story, I hoped, was the answer to the question that had been sitting unanswered on my great-grandfather’s arm for more than a century.

Who was F. Bevens?

The Bevans Family

The first task was to establish exactly who this George Bevans was. That sounds simple enough. It wasn’t.

The surname immediately began causing problems.

Depending on the record, I found Bevans, Bevins, Bevin, Bavins and, on one particularly creative occasion, something that looked remarkably like Bebins.

This is one of those moments when you have to remind yourself that your ancestors weren’t responsible for how their names were recorded. They didn’t create the indexes we now rely upon.

Someone else did.

And sometimes, someone else’s handwriting can keep a family historian busy for hours. So I stopped searching for one perfect spelling and started following the people instead.

The first important piece fell into place when I found the marriage of George Bevans and Elizabeth Wilson in 1882. That was significant.

I now had a family name, a wife, a place and, crucially, a maiden name.

Wilson.

From there, the children began to emerge from the records.

George Robert.

Robert James.

James Robert.

Jessie.

Edward John.

The spellings continued to change, but the underlying family remained remarkably consistent. And then I came across something that made me look twice.

There was a Florence.

Not simply a Florence with the right surname, but a Florence who appeared to belong to this same family.

The date wasn’t quite what I had expected. Earlier research had contained a tantalising reference to “Flossie? 1888”, while the records I was now finding pointed towards a birth around 1886.

Close enough to be interesting.

Not close enough to be conclusive.

But genealogy is often about recognising when a clue deserves another look. So I followed Florence. Her records began to give me something I hadn’t had when I first saw that crossed-out name on the 1911 census.

A full name.

Florence Ann Bevans. And then came another piece of the puzzle. Her birth record gave her mother’s maiden name as Wilson.

That connected her directly back to the family I had just reconstructed.

George Bevans.

Elizabeth Wilson.

Florence Ann.

The pieces were beginning to fit. But I was still deliberately resisting the temptation to declare that I had found my answer. After all, Florence was a common enough first name, and Bevans was only one of several spellings I had encountered.

I needed more.

I needed to know what happened to this Florence. Was she really the same young woman who had appeared, albeit crossed out, on the 1911 census? And, more importantly, could she possibly have been the F. Bevens whose name had been permanently written onto my great-grandfather’s arm?

The trail had brought me this far. Now it was time to follow Florence’s life and see where it led.

Following Florence

With Florence now firmly attached to the Bevans family, the next step was to see what happened to her. This was where the trail became much more interesting.

The first significant record was her 1907 marriage.

On 8 September 1907, Florence Ann Bevans married Charles James Rayment in Canning Town. She was recorded as 21, and her father was named as George Bevans.

I remember looking at the date and immediately doing the arithmetic. John’s tattoo had been recorded on 19 October 1906. Less than eleven months separated the two events.

That was certainly interesting. But it was still only circumstantial.

A marriage record doesn’t tell us who somebody loved before they married. It certainly doesn’t tell us who might have had their name tattooed on an arm. So I resisted the temptation to jump to conclusions and carried on following Florence.

The 1911 census provided another useful piece of the puzzle. Florence was now living as Florence Rayment, with her husband James, at 28 Scott Street, Canning Town.

That was important for another reason.

It confirmed that the Florence we’d been following hadn’t simply disappeared after her marriage. She was still there, still in the same general part of East London, and now living under the surname Rayment. The 1921 census took us a little further. Florence was still living with James and their children, and her birthplace was recorded as Canning Town.

Then came the 1939 Register. This gave me a precise date of birth. 5 May 1886. And finally, the death index. In 1973, Florence Ann Rayment died in Essex at the age of 87. Her recorded date of birth was once again:

5 May 1886.

By this point, I was no longer dealing with a name that merely happened to fit. I had a woman whose life I could follow. Born Florence Ann Bevans. Daughter of George Bevans and Elizabeth Wilson. Born in the right part of East London. Unmarried at the time John enlisted. Married in Canning Town less than a year afterwards. And then traceable through the records for more than six decades under her married name.

The evidence was beginning to look remarkably persuasive. But there was still a problem. None of those records actually mentioned John Barnes. And that mattered. Because I wasn’t trying to prove that Florence Ann Bevans existed. I’d already done that.

I was trying to answer a much more personal question. Was she the woman John meant when he had those words tattooed on his arm?

That was where the evidence became much thinner. And it was time to stop looking at Florence for a moment and go back to John.

Back to John

I now had a very plausible candidate for F. Bevens.

But genealogy isn’t about collecting pieces that fit and ignoring the ones that don’t. So I went back to John.

The first thing I kept coming back to was that address:

66 Hansworth Street, Canning Town.

John wasn’t simply recruited in the area. His attestation tells us that he had been living in Canning Town during the preceding year. That was important. Because Florence was from the same part of East London.

John was living at 66 Hansworth Street, while Florence would later be found living with her husband at 28 Scott Street, both addresses in Canning Town, within the same tightly packed docklands community. And John wasn’t living there as a soldier. He was a young civilian, working as a carman, before he enlisted.

So, for at least part of 1905 and 1906, we have two young people living in the same East London neighbourhood.

John was about seventeen.

Florence was about twenty.

And somewhere during that period, the words “I Love F. Bevens” found their way onto John’s left forearm. Could that be a coincidence? Of course it could.

Canning Town was a busy, densely populated place. Thousands of people lived and worked there. Simply being in the same neighbourhood doesn’t prove that two people ever met.

But the pieces were starting to form a pattern. There was another detail I found particularly intriguing. When John enlisted, Florence was still Florence Ann Bevans. Her marriage to Charles James Rayment came less than a year later.

If the tattoo really was a declaration of love, the timing suddenly seemed rather poignant.

Perhaps John had fallen for a young woman who eventually chose somebody else.

Perhaps Florence had never felt the same way.

Perhaps the relationship had ended before it ever had the chance to become anything more.

Or perhaps the tattoo meant something completely different. That’s the frustrating thing about historical records. They are very good at telling us what happened.

I could establish where John lived.

I could establish where Florence came from.

I could establish when she married.

I could establish that the tattoo existed before that marriage.

What I couldn’t establish was whether John and Florence had ever actually met. And that was the point at which I had to make a decision. I could keep searching indefinitely, hoping that somewhere in some obscure archive there might be a letter, a photograph, a newspaper report or a family connection that finally gave me the answer.

Or I could step back and ask a more difficult question.

How much evidence is enough?

Because sometimes, in family history, the answer isn’t hiding in another record. Sometimes we’ve simply reached the edge of what the records can tell us.

What We Know and What We Don’t

I don’t think I have solved the mystery of F. Bevens. And I’m comfortable saying that.

There is no document that says “Florence Ann Bevans was the woman John Barnes loved.” No letter, no photograph, no diary entry and no family story has appeared to give us that final piece of certainty.

What we do have is something rather more interesting than a simple name match.

We have a young man called John Edwin Barnes, living in Canning Town, who had the words “I Love F. Bevens”tattooed on his arm before enlisting in 1906.

We have Florence Ann Bevans, born in the same East London world, the daughter of George Bevans and Elizabeth Wilson.

We have the right initial.

We have the right surname, allowing for the spelling variations so common in historical records.

We have the right period.

We have the same Canning Town connection.

We have Florence unmarried when John’s tattoo was recorded, followed by her marriage less than a year later.

None of those things, individually, proves anything. Together, however, they form a compelling circumstantial case. Is it enough to say that Florence was F. Bevens?

No.

Is it enough to say that she could have been?

Absolutely.

And, after all these years of wondering who that mysterious initial belonged to, Florence Ann Bevans is by far the strongest candidate I have found.

The Mystery Remains

Perhaps that is as close as I’m ever going to get.

Maybe somewhere, buried in an archive I’ve never found, there is a letter that would settle the matter in an instant. Perhaps there is a family photograph with John and Florence standing somewhere together. Perhaps a descendant has a story that has been passed down through the generations.

Or perhaps none of those things ever existed.

Maybe John simply carried the memory of Florence with him into the Army, along with a tattoo that seemed like a good idea when he was seventeen.

We will probably never know for certain.

But there is something rather wonderful about that. Because when I first looked at those words, F. Bevens was nothing more than an initial and a surname.

Now she is Florence Ann Bevans.

She has a family.

A birthplace.

A marriage.

Children.

A long life.

And a story that has survived more than a century. Perhaps Florence really was the woman John loved. Perhaps she wasn’t.

But for the first time, F. Bevens has become a person rather than a mystery. And perhaps that is what family history does best.

We don’t always find all the answers. Sometimes, we simply bring the people behind the records back into view. And sometimes, that’s enough.

And perhaps that is the thread I’m taking away from this week’s Observer.

Whether we are standing on an old battlefield, following a migration trail, trying to break through a brick wall, listening to the memories of a parent, opening an old family suitcase or wondering what will happen to our digital lives when we are gone, we are all trying to do the same thing: to stop lives from disappearing.

The records may give us some of the details, but it is the stories, memories, places and personal treasures that help us understand the people behind them. And sometimes, as William Rufus reminds us, even the evidence cannot give us a definitive answer. That uncertainty is part of the story too.

Perhaps our role as family historians is not to find every answer, or to preserve every detail, but to make sure that what we can discover is not lost again.

Because one day, the stories we are researching today will become someone else’s history.

So what will we leave behind for them to find?

Chiddicks Family Tree

Some involve illegitimate children, missing fathers or ancestors who seem to disappear into thin air.

And then there’s F. Bevens.

My great-grandfather, John Edwin Barnes, enlisted in the Essex Regiment in 1906. According to his army records, he was 17 years and 7 months old.

He was actually only 16 years and 7 months. Clearly, John was keen to grow up a little quicker than nature intended!

His enlistment papers also recorded his distinguishing marks: scars on his forehead and between his shoulder blades.

But there was one other distinguishing mark.

A tattoo on the front of his left forearm:

“I LOVE F. BEVENS”

Well, John… you’ve got my attention.

Who was F. Bevens?

A sweetheart? A fiancée? A fleeting romance? Or perhaps something else entirely?

I’ve searched for her several times, but so far F. Bevens remains stubbornly hidden in the records.

Of course, that means she has now joined my ever-growing genealogy to-do list.

John would eventually serve with the Essex Regiment at Gallipoli, where he died.

But before all of that, a 16-year-old boy decided to permanently declare his love for someone called F. Bevens.

And now, more than a century later, his great-grandson is still trying to find out who she was.

That’s genealogy for you. You never quite know where the next mystery will lead.

And sometimes… it’s written in ink on your ancestor’s arm.

Chiddicks Family Tree

At first glance, Postman’s Park appears to be just another peaceful green space, a welcome retreat from the pace of the capital. Shaded by mature trees and bordered by historic buildings, it offers a quiet place to pause, eat lunch or simply escape the noise for a few moments.

But step beneath a modest timber shelter at the edge of the park and you’ll discover one of Britain’s most moving memorials.

Lining a long brick wall are dozens of beautifully crafted ceramic plaques, each telling the story of an ordinary person who lost their life while trying to save someone else. There are no famous generals, monarchs or celebrated politicians remembered here. Instead, these simple tablets honour children, labourers, nurses, sailors, domestic servants and countless others whose final acts of courage might otherwise have been forgotten.

It is a place that asks us to slow down.

To read.

To reflect.

And perhaps to reconsider what it truly means to be a hero.

Unlike many of London’s great monuments, Postman’s Park does not celebrate victory or power. Instead, it quietly honours compassion, selflessness and the extraordinary bravery that can be found in the most ordinary of lives.

Behind every plaque is a story.

And together, those stories form one of London’s most touching and enduring tributes to everyday heroism.

The Story Behind the Memorial

The story of Postman’s Park begins not with the park itself, but with a remarkable Victorian artist who believed that history had overlooked a very different kind of hero.

George Frederic Watts (1817–1904) was one of Britain’s most celebrated painters and sculptors, renowned for his symbolic works and grand portraits of prominent figures. Yet despite his success, Watts believed that the greatest examples of human character were often found far from the spotlight.

Following the death of Princess Alice in 1878, Watts first proposed the idea of creating a national memorial to commemorate the countless ordinary men, women and children whose acts of courage went unnoticed. While society rightly honoured military victories and public figures with statues and monuments, he questioned why there was so little recognition for those who quietly sacrificed their own lives to save others.

To Watts, these were the true heroes of everyday life.

He imagined a memorial that would preserve their stories for future generations, not through grand sculptures or elaborate monuments, but through simple, honest inscriptions recording acts of selfless bravery.

That vision finally became reality in 1900, when the Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice was unveiled in the newly created Postman’s Park.

The park itself has an interesting history. Rather than being designed as a memorial garden, it was formed during the late nineteenth century by combining the former burial grounds of several city churches, creating a peaceful public space in the densely built-up City of London. It soon became a popular place for employees from the nearby General Post Office to spend their lunch breaks, giving rise to the name by which it is still known today ‘Postman’s Park’.

The memorial found a fitting home here.

Away from London’s grand ceremonial avenues and famous landmarks, the quiet surroundings reflected the very people it sought to honour: ordinary individuals whose courage had changed lives without expectation of recognition or reward.

When the memorial was officially opened, only four ceramic tablets had been installed. Watts had imagined a much larger wall capable of holding around 120 plaques, each recording another story of remarkable self-sacrifice.

Although he died just four years later, his vision did not end with him. His wife, Mary Watts, continued championing the project, overseeing the installation of many additional plaques and ensuring that her husband’s belief, that ordinary heroism deserved an extraordinary memorial, would endure.

Today, while the memorial remains unfinished in the way Watts originally imagined, that very incompleteness adds to its quiet power. Each ceramic tablet serves as a reminder that history is shaped not only by famous names and great events, but also by countless acts of compassion that might otherwise have been forgotten.

Stories Etched in Ceramic

Alice Ayres (1859–1885)

One of the memorial’s best-known names is Alice Ayres, a 26-year-old domestic servant whose courage captured the imagination of Victorian Britain.

On 24 April 1885, a fire broke out at a timber merchant’s shop and home in Union Street, Borough. As flames spread rapidly through the building, Alice found herself trapped on an upper floor with the three young daughters of her employer.

With escape cut off, she carried the children to an upstairs window and, one by one, helped each of them to safety, trusting they would be caught by the crowd gathering below. Having given the children a chance to live, Alice herself attempted to escape. She fell from the window and died from her injuries two days later.

Her story was widely reported in newspapers across the country and became one of the defining examples of Victorian self-sacrifice. In the years since, historians have questioned some of the dramatic details that appeared in contemporary newspaper accounts, but one fact has never been disputed: Alice remained with the children until they were safe, placing their lives before her own.

Her plaque in Postman’s Park preserves not just the memory of her final moments, but the timeless truth that genuine heroism is often found in the quiet decisions made when no one expects recognition.

Mary Rogers (d. 1899)

Not every act of heroism takes place on dry land.

On 30 March 1899, the passenger steamer SS Stella struck the Casquets Rocks near Alderney in the English Channel. The vessel began to sink rapidly, and as panic spread among passengers and crew, lifeboats were launched into increasingly desperate conditions.

Among the crew was Mary Rogers, a stewardess whose first instinct was not to think of her own survival, but of the passengers in her care.

When the opportunity came for her to take a place in one of the lifeboats, she refused, believing it was already dangerously overcrowded. According to eyewitness accounts, she gave her life belt to another passenger and remained aboard as the Stella slipped beneath the waves.

Mary’s final moments were widely reported in newspapers across Britain. One witness recalled hearing her cry, “Lord, save me,” before she disappeared beneath the water.

The loss of the Stella claimed more than one hundred lives, yet Mary Rogers’ quiet courage became one of the tragedy’s enduring stories. Her plaque in Postman’s Park honours not simply the way she died, but the compassion she showed in choosing another person’s chance of survival above her own.

In the midst of confusion and fear, her final act reminds us that true courage is often measured not by the certainty of success, but by the willingness to put others first.

Solomon Galaman (1883–1894)

Some acts of courage are born not from experience or training, but from instinct.

Solomon Galaman was just eleven years old when tragedy struck on a London street in 1894. As he and his younger brother crossed the road, an approaching horse-drawn carriage placed the younger child directly in its path.

Without hesitation, Solomon pushed his brother clear of the danger.

In doing so, he was struck himself.

His younger brother survived, but Solomon’s injuries proved fatal.

The few words recorded on his memorial plaque are among the most moving in Postman’s Park. They simply read:

“Mother, I saved him, but I could not save myself.”

Whether spoken in his final moments or remembered by those who loved him, those words have become inseparable from his story. They capture not only the tragedy of a life cut painfully short, but the instinctive love of an older brother whose only thought was to protect someone else.

Standing before Solomon’s plaque, it is difficult not to pause a little longer. His story reminds us that courage does not belong to age or experience. Sometimes it is found in the simplest of human instincts, the desire to protect those we love, whatever the cost.

Sarah Smith (Sarah Gibson) (c.1845–1863)

Not every act of courage takes place beyond the stage.

Performing under the stage name Sarah Smith, seventeen-year-old Sarah Gibson was a pantomime artiste appearing in Riquet With the Tuft at London’s Princess’s Theatre in January 1863. During one performance, the elaborate costumes and stage lighting that dazzled Victorian audiences became the setting for tragedy.

As one of her fellow performers, Anne Hunt, became engulfed in flames after her costume caught fire, Sarah instinctively tried to help extinguish the blaze. In doing so, her own highly flammable dress also caught fire.

Both women suffered terrible burns.

Anne Hunt eventually recovered from her injuries, but Sarah lingered in hospital for several days before dying on 28 January 1863, just seventeen years old.

Her memorial plaque in Postman’s Park records only the bare facts of that terrible evening. Yet behind those few words lies the story of a young woman whose first instinct, in a moment of sudden danger, was to help another performer rather than think of her own safety.

There was no audience applause for that final act of courage.

Only a ceramic plaque that continues to tell her story more than a century later.

Leigh Pitt (1978–2007)

The final story in this collection is also its newest.

More than a century after George Frederic Watts first imagined a memorial to ordinary heroism, Leigh Pitt became the first person to be commemorated with a new plaque in seventy-eight years, reminding us that acts of selfless courage are not confined to history.

On 7 August 2007, Leigh was walking beside Thames Lock Canal in Essex when he saw a young boy struggling in the water. Without hesitation, he entered the canal and succeeded in rescuing the child.

Leigh, however, was unable to save himself.

He drowned before help could reach him.

In 2009, his name became the first to be added to the Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice since 1931, ensuring that George Frederic Watts’ vision continued into the twenty-first century.

His plaque reminds us that compassion belongs to no single era. The circumstances may change, but the instinct to place another person’s life before our own remains timeless.

Standing before Leigh Pitt’s memorial, visitors are reminded that the wall is more than a record of Victorian courage. It is a living tribute to the enduring capacity for ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts of humanity.

The memorial remains unfinished because courage itself is unfinished.

A Wall That Speaks Quietly

Walking slowly along the memorial, it becomes impossible to see the plaques simply as works of ceramic craftsmanship. Each tablet represents a single moment when an ordinary life became part of someone else’s story.

Some of the people remembered here saved strangers. Others died protecting family members, friends or those placed in their care. Their backgrounds were different, their ages varied, and the circumstances surrounding each tragedy were unique. Yet they are united by one simple truth: when faced with a moment of extraordinary consequence, they chose compassion over self-preservation.

The memorial does not ask us to compare their courage or measure their sacrifice. Instead, it invites us to pause, to read their names, and to remember that history is shaped not only by those who changed the world, but also by those who changed a single life.

The Stories Behind the Tiles

The memorial’s ceramic plaques have become almost as recognisable as the stories they preserve. Their rich colours, hand-painted lettering and beautifully crafted borders catch the eye of almost every visitor, yet few realise that the tiles have a remarkable history of their own.

Many people assume that every plaque was created by the celebrated Arts and Crafts designer William De Morgan, whose distinctive ceramics are admired around the world. While this is partly true, the story is a little more complex.

When the first tablets were installed in 1900, they were produced by William De Morgan’s pottery, whose craftsmanship perfectly complemented George Frederic Watts’ vision of a memorial that was both beautiful and understated. De Morgan’s ceramics were renowned for their rich glazes, elegant lettering and exceptional quality, giving each plaque a quiet dignity that reflected the lives they commemorated.

However, after De Morgan’s pottery closed in 1907, work on the memorial continued using Royal Doulton of Lambeth, whose craftsmen carefully produced later tablets in a style that respected the originals. If you look closely, subtle differences can still be seen between the two makers, though together they form a remarkably harmonious whole.

The memorial itself also remains unfinished.

George Frederic Watts had imagined a much longer wall, capable of recording around 120 acts of heroic self-sacrifice. In reality, only 54 ceramic tablets, commemorating 62 individuals, were ever installed. Following Watts’ death in 1904, his wife, Mary Watts, worked tirelessly to continue the project, but changing priorities and the practical realities of maintaining the memorial meant that the original vision was never fully realised.

Yet perhaps there is something quietly fitting about that.

The unfinished wall serves as a gentle reminder that stories of courage can never truly be completed. Every generation produces its own acts of compassion, sacrifice and quiet heroism. The addition of Leigh Pitt’s plaque in 2009, after a gap of seventy-eight years, showed that George Frederic Watts’ idea was never confined to the Victorian age.

Today, visitors may first notice the craftsmanship of the ceramic plaques, but they rarely leave remembering the tiles themselves.

They leave remembering the people whose stories those tiles were created to preserve.

Why This Memorial Still Matters

It would be easy to think of Postman’s Park as simply a Victorian curiosity, a peaceful garden containing a memorial from another age.

Yet spending even a few minutes beside the wall of ceramic plaques quickly changes that impression.

The stories remembered here are not remarkable because they belong to history. They are remarkable because they show us that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.

Heroism is often imagined as something extraordinary, reserved for battlefields or moments that alter the course of history. Yet the people commemorated at Postman’s Park did not set out to become heroes.

They were domestic servants.

Children.

Stewardesses.

Performers.

Working men and women.

Ordinary people living ordinary lives.

Then, in a single unforeseen moment, they were faced with a choice.

Again and again, they chose someone else.

That is what makes this memorial so quietly powerful.

It reminds us that courage rarely announces itself in advance. It appears unexpectedly, in a burning house, on the deck of a sinking ship, beside a canal, or in the middle of a busy street. It asks for no recognition and offers no certainty of success. It simply demands a decision.

Perhaps that is why George Frederic Watts’ vision continues to resonate more than a century after the memorial was unveiled.

The names recorded here may never appear in history books, yet the values they represent remain as relevant today as they were in Victorian Britain.

Compassion.

Selflessness.

Kindness.

The willingness to place another person’s life before our own.

In a city filled with monuments celebrating kings, generals and great achievements, Postman’s Park quietly reminds us that history is also shaped by ordinary people whose greatest legacy was a single act of humanity.

Tomorrow, thousands of people will once again walk through the park.

Some will pause.

Some will read a plaque or two.

Many will continue on their way.

But for those who stop long enough to listen, the memorial offers something increasingly rare: a reminder that the measure of a life is not found in fame or fortune, but in the difference we make to others.

It asks us not to remember how these people died, but how they chose to live.

Visiting Postman’s Park

Postman’s Park is tucked away in the heart of the City of London, just a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral. Surrounded by busy streets and modern office buildings, it remains one of the capital’s most peaceful and contemplative spaces.

The park is free to visit and makes an easy addition to any walk through London’s historic centre. Whether you spend five minutes reading a single plaque or an hour exploring every story along the memorial wall, it is a place that rewards those willing to slow down.

If you do visit, resist the temptation to read every plaque in one visit.

Instead, choose a handful.

Read them slowly.

Pause between each one.

Allow yourself a moment to think about the lives behind the names.

You may arrive expecting to see a memorial.

You’ll leave remembering people.

Chiddicks Family Tree

Its soaring Gothic stonework dominates the skyline, while the great clock has watched over Münster for centuries.

But it isn’t the church that stays with you.

It’s three iron cages.

High above the marketplace they hang, black against the sky, too small to dominate the tower, yet too strange to dismiss as decoration.

Every visitor asks the same question.

Why are they still there?

Standing beneath St. Lambert’s Church, I found myself asking exactly that.

As I stood in the square with the warm midday sun bearing down on my face, Münster carried on as though it were any other ordinary day. Conversations drifted from the cafés. Cyclists passed without hurry. Children laughed as they wandered through the market with ice creams already beginning to melt. Nothing about the scene hinted at the story hanging overhead.

Then I looked up.

Looking Up

Three iron cages hung high above St. Lambert’s Church.

Empty.

Suspended between earth and sky, they had become more than iron cages. They carried a story that had survived almost five centuries.

To understand why those cages are still there, we have to go back almost five hundred years, to three men who believed they were building a better world.

They were not kings.

They were not generals.

They were not criminals.

They were believers.

Jan van Leiden was a charismatic young Dutch preacher. Bernhard Knipperdolling was a wealthy cloth merchant and respected citizen of Münster. Bernhard Krechting had once served as the town clerk in nearby Warendorf.

They came from different walks of life, but they shared the same conviction.

Europe was in turmoil. The old certainties were being questioned, and new religious ideas were spreading with remarkable speed. To many, these men offered something more than a new interpretation of scripture. They offered hope.

They believed the world was about to change.

Christ’s return was close.

Münster, they believed, could become the New Jerusalem, a city governed not by princes or bishops, but by God himself.

It was an extraordinary promise.

A city where wealth would be shared. Where faith, rather than birth or privilege, determined your place. Where the old order would be swept away and replaced by something new.

For many, it was a message of hope. And hope can be a powerful thing. As more people embraced their vision, Münster began to change.

At first, change came gradually. Adult baptism replaced infant baptism. Property was shared. But as the movement gathered strength, disagreement became increasingly difficult. Those unwilling to embrace the new order found there was less and less room for compromise.

What had begun as a dream was becoming something altogether different. History is full of movements that begin with hope and end somewhere their founders never imagined. The city was surrounded. Food became scarce. Fear replaced optimism.

Conviction hardened into certainty.

Rules that once seemed unthinkable became law. Even marriage itself was reshaped in ways many could never have imagined.

The siege lasted more than a year. By the summer of 1535, it was over.

The city fell. Jan van Leiden, Bernhard Knipperdolling and Bernhard Krechting were captured alive.

A Warning That Never Ended

Months later, on a cold January day in 1536, the people of Münster gathered once again in the marketplace.

This time, there was no promise of a better world.

Only judgement.

Their bodies were placed inside three iron cages and hoisted high onto the tower of St. Lambert’s Church for all to see.

It was a display intended to crush any lingering sympathy for their cause. They were never meant to become a memorial.

They were meant to be a warning. Warnings are usually temporary. Once their purpose has been served, they disappear.

These never did.

As I left the square, children were still laughing. Cyclists still drifted past. Coffee cups still clinked beneath café umbrellas.

Above it all, three empty cages still hung against the sky.

Almost five hundred years later, they still ask the same question of everyone who looks up.

I arrived in Münster expecting to remember the church.

Instead, I left thinking about three empty cages.

Sometimes history doesn’t whisper.

Sometimes it hangs above a busy market square, waiting for someone to look up.

Chiddicks Family Tree

When people first begin researching their family history, there’s a natural temptation to leap backwards as quickly as possible. We race through census returns, parish registers and birth records, eager to see how many generations we can add to our tree.

I completely understand the excitement. After all, discovering that you’ve reached the 1700s, or even earlier, feels like a real achievement.

But in that rush to go further back, one of the most valuable records in genealogy is often overlooked.

Death records.

At first glance they don’t seem particularly exciting. After all, they simply record the end of someone’s life. Compared with a marriage record full of new relatives or a census showing an entire household, they can seem rather underwhelming.

In reality, however, a death record can be genealogical gold.

For those of us who like our family trees to be tidy and complete, a death record closes the final chapter of an ancestor’s story. More importantly, it often opens the door to entirely new discoveries. Addresses, occupations, family members, burial locations and even previously unknown children or spouses can all appear on a single document.

Death Has Never Been Cheaper

For years, ordering death certificates could become an expensive habit, especially when you were working through several branches of your family.

Thankfully, the UK General Register Office has made life much easier. Digital copies of death entries can now be downloaded instantly for just £3.00, making it far more affordable to fill in the missing pieces of your family tree.

It’s one of the best-value investments you can make in your research.

A Case Study: My Great-Grandfather’s Death Certificate

Let’s look at my own great-grandfather’s death certificate and see just how much information one document can reveal.

Date and Place of Death

The certificate gives the exact date of death together with his full address.

That single address immediately provides several new avenues to explore. Electoral registers, property records, street directories and local newspapers may all contain additional information about his final years.

A simple address can unlock an entirely new chapter of someone’s life.

Occupation

His occupation is recorded as “Stained Glass Glazier (Retired).”

I had never previously discovered that he specialised in stained glass rather than simply working as a glazier.

That small detail immediately raises new questions.

Which churches or public buildings might he have worked on? Did he belong to a trade union? Were there newspaper advertisements or business directories mentioning his work? Occupational details like this can transform an ancestor from a name on a page into a real person with skills, experience and pride in their craft.

The Informant

Perhaps the biggest surprise came from the informant.

The death was registered by his daughter, Margaret Gladys Barber, whose address is also recorded on the certificate.

Not only does this confirm an important family relationship, but it also tells me exactly where she was living at the time, giving me another household to investigate.

Even better, I discovered that his son, E. T. Wootton, was living next door. That neatly connected addresses I’d previously seen separately on electoral rolls and helped piece together how the family remained close during his final years.

Would I eventually have found all of this without the certificate?

Possibly.

Would it have taken much longer, with a greater chance of missing something important?

Almost certainly.

That single certificate gave me more genuinely useful information than several hours spent searching online.

Why “Killing Off” Your Ancestors Matters

One of the most important jobs in genealogy isn’t finding new ancestors.

It’s eliminating the wrong ones.

Anyone researching families with common names will know exactly what I mean. In my own tree I have no fewer than nine Thomas Woottons and six William Woottons. Without properly documenting each person’s death, it’s incredibly easy to merge two completely different people into one, or worse, spend months researching the wrong family.

A death certificate allows you to confidently say:

“This Thomas Wootton died in 1938, therefore he cannot be the Thomas Wootton appearing in the 1939 Register.”

As any good detective will tell you, ruling somebody out is often just as valuable as identifying the right person.

Once you’ve confirmed the death, you’ve effectively “killed off” that ancestor, making every future search that little bit easier and preventing costly mistakes.

Finding Burial or Cremation Records

Once you’ve confirmed the death, the next challenge is locating where your ancestor was laid to rest.

Fortunately, you already have several excellent clues.

You know the date of death.

You know the address.

You usually know the registration district.

That gives you a very good starting point.

One of my favourite research tools at this stage isn’t a genealogy website at all, it’s Google Maps.

I simply enter the final address and begin looking for nearby cemeteries, crematoria and churchyards. Quite often you’ll discover several possibilities within walking distance of where your ancestor lived.

Religious background is another useful clue. Church of England, Catholic, Jewish, Methodist and other Nonconformist denominations all tended to favour different burial grounds.

That said, never assume your ancestor remained in the same faith throughout their life.

My own 2× great-grandfather, Thomas Wootton, was baptised into the Church of England. However, after marrying my 2× great-grandmother, Nicolina Elizabeth Stampa, whose family were of Italian descent, he converted to Catholicism shortly before his death.

As a result, they were both buried together in St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in London.

It’s a perfect reminder that people’s lives often take unexpected turns and so can our research.

Useful Online Resources

Many burial records have now been digitised, making the search much easier than it once was.

Some of my regular starting points include:

• Findmypast Burial Index

• Find A Grave

• Deceased Online

• Interment.net

• Local authority cemetery databases

• Individual cemetery websites, such as Brompton Cemetery

Bear in mind that coverage varies considerably by area, and some services require a subscription or charge a small fee.

Finding the Grave

Locating the cemetery is only half the journey.

Now comes the detective work of finding the actual grave.

Unfortunately, many ordinary families could not afford permanent memorials. Graves may be unmarked, headstones removed or inscriptions simply weathered away over time.

If possible, contact the cemetery office before your visit. Many hold burial registers and plot maps that aren’t available online.

And here’s my favourite tip of all.

Talk to the gravedigger.

It sounds obvious, but local cemetery staff often possess decades of knowledge that no database can replace. I’ve found several family graves only because someone working there remembered where an old section was or recognised a family name.

Most are incredibly knowledgeable and more than happy to help if they’re not busy.

Once you’ve found the grave, I always recommend recording as much information as possible:

• Photograph the grave and any headstone.

• Take a wider photograph showing its location within the cemetery.

• Record the exact plot number.

• Note nearby family graves.

• Write down any additional inscriptions that may be difficult to read in photographs.

Your future self will thank you.

One Final Tip

If you’re planning a day exploring churchyards or cemeteries, pack a flask, some lunch and wear comfortable, waterproof clothing.

Family history isn’t always spent sitting behind a computer.

Some of the best discoveries happen outdoors, standing in muddy boots, deciphering a weathered headstone in the rain.

And somehow, those are often the discoveries you’ll remember the most.

By documenting an ancestor’s death and burial, you’re not simply recording how their life ended.

You’re making sure their story is complete.

After all, one day someone may be researching us and hopefully they’ll be grateful that we left them a few good records to find before we became a death certificate ourselves.

Chiddicks Family Tree

Then there are places that make you stop because they’re quiet.

Tyneham is one of those places.

Before I ever learned its history, I saw photographs of empty cottages, a lonely church, and a village street that seemed to lead nowhere. At first glance, it looked like another abandoned settlement slowly being reclaimed by nature.

It wasn’t.

The silence wasn’t accidental.

It had been left there.

I’ve always been fascinated by places that history seems to have paused rather than finished.

Old railway stations with no trains.

Disused airfields where the wind is now the loudest sound.

Villages where someone locked the front door expecting to unlock it again a few weeks later.

Tyneham is perhaps the most heartbreaking example I’ve come across.

In late 1943, during the darkest years of the Second World War, the people of this small Dorset village were asked to leave their homes. The Army needed the surrounding land to prepare soldiers for the invasion of occupied Europe.

They were given just twenty-eight days.

It was explained as a temporary measure. A necessary sacrifice.

The villagers packed what they could, left behind what they couldn’t, and walked away believing they would return once the war had been won.

Who could have imagined they never would?

One of the things that stayed with me most wasn’t the ruined cottages or the abandoned streets.

It was a simple handwritten note.

Pinned to the door of St Mary’s Church, it asked those who came after to care for the homes the villagers had been forced to leave behind.

There was no anger.

No bitterness.

Just quiet hope.

“We shall return one day...”

Those words have echoed through more than eighty years of history.

They never came true.

I often wonder what the last day must have felt like.

Did someone pause before closing the garden gate?

Did children understand what was happening, or did they think it was simply an adventure?

Was there one last look back at the church tower before disappearing over the hill?

History records the dates.

It records the decisions made in government offices.

But it rarely records those small, deeply human moments.

Perhaps that’s why places like Tyneham affect us so much. They invite us to imagine the lives between the official documents.

Walking through Tyneham today isn’t like visiting a museum.

It feels more like walking through an unanswered question.

The schoolhouse has been lovingly restored to tell the story of the children who once learned there. St Mary’s Church still stands quietly at the heart of the village. Roofless cottages reveal fireplaces, staircases and fragments of everyday life that refuse to disappear completely.

The village isn’t frozen because nothing has changed.

It’s frozen because one chapter ended before anyone expected it to.

The war ended.

Peace returned.

The villagers waited.

But the promise that they would come home slowly slipped away.

The Army remained.

The training grounds expanded.

The village became part of the landscape rather than part of everyday life.

Generations grew older knowing the homes their parents and grandparents had left behind would never again belong to them.

It’s easy to call Tyneham a ghost village.

But I think that’s too simple.

Ghost stories belong to the past.

Tyneham belongs to memory.

Every abandoned place asks us a question.

Some ask what happened.

Others ask why.

Tyneham asks something altogether different.

What does home really mean?

Is it a building?

A village?

A place on a map?

Or is it something we carry with us long after we’ve been forced to leave?

Perhaps that’s why this story continues to resonate with so many people.

It’s not really about an abandoned village.

It’s about the people who believed they would return.

And about a promise that history never kept.

If you ever find yourself in Dorset on one of the weekends when the military ranges are open, I’d encourage you to visit Tyneham.

Walk slowly.

Read the names.

Stand quietly inside the church for a moment.

And remember that behind every empty cottage once lived an ordinary family who simply expected to come home.

Sometimes history isn’t found in castles or battlefields.

Sometimes it’s found in the silence that follows after everyone has gone.

But recently I found myself looking at heirlooms from a completely different perspective.

Each one has reinforced just how important it is to preserve not only the object itself, but the story that gives it meaning. But recently, I’ve found myself looking at heirlooms from a completely different perspective.

Instead of asking, “What treasures have we inherited?” I found myself asking a far more personal question...

What will I leave behind?

That question came after my recent blog about the tiny First World War aeroplane made from a spent bullet casing by Antony Marr’s great-uncle, John William Lord, known to the family as “Uncle Jack”.

For Uncle Jack, creating that little plane wasn’t simply about turning a piece of wartime metal into something decorative. It became something far more significant. More than a century later, it still tells his story and reminds future generations of the life he lived.

After I shared that story, Antony left a comment that stopped me in my tracks.

He asked:

“What item are you going to leave behind for your descendants? Not something that you’ve inherited, but something personal of our own. What will our own legacy be?”

What a wonderful question.

And, if I’m honest, one I’d never really stopped to consider.

Antony already knows what his answer is.

Having served for many years with the Metropolitan Police, the heirloom he intends to pass on is the police truncheon he carried throughout his service. It’s a deeply personal object that represents an important chapter of his life and will one day remind future generations that their ancestor served as a police officer.

That simple question made me pause. If someone was looking back on my life many years from now, what object would tell my story?

Or perhaps an even bigger question is this...

Will it be an object at all?

The Gifts That Can’t Be Held

While physical heirlooms are wonderful, perhaps the greatest legacy we leave behind cannot be placed on a shelf or stored in a box.

It’s the values we pass on.

The kindness we show.

The encouragement we give.

The traditions we create.

The love we share.

Our children, grandchildren, friends and colleagues may not remember every detail of our lives, but they will remember how we made them feel. They will remember the lessons we taught, the example we set and the way we treated others.

Those become heirlooms too.

Think about the people who shaped your own life. Perhaps it was your grandmother’s quiet kindness. Your father’s unwavering integrity. A teacher who believed in you. Or a friend who stood beside you when life became difficult. These are the gifts that live on long after possessions have faded or disappeared. They become part of the next generation.

What Will They Remember About Us?

As I’ve reflected on Antony’s question, I’ve realised that I hope my legacy will be more than the possessions I leave behind. Of course, I’d love there to be a few treasured keepsakes that tell my story.

But more than that, I hope I’ll be remembered for the love I gave, the kindness I showed, my curiosity about family history, and my determination to preserve the stories of those who came before us.

If future generations know anything about me, I hope they see someone who cared deeply about ensuring that family memories weren’t lost.

Because stories matter.

People matter.

Family matters.

A Legacy Is Built Every Day

Perhaps that’s the greatest lesson of all. Legacy isn’t something we create at the end of our lives. It’s something we’re building every single day.

Every act of kindness.

Every story we preserve.

Every person we encourage.

Every lesson we pass on.

Every memory we help create.

These become the invisible heirlooms we leave for those who follow us. So, as we treasure the wonderful heirlooms we’ve inherited, perhaps we should also ask ourselves one simple question.

What legacy am I creating today?

Because one day, someone may look back and wonder about us. What object will remind them of our lives?

More importantly...

What stories will they tell?

Chiddicks Family Tree

Most people would instinctively say yes. After all, a birth certificate is an official document. It carries authority. It is treated as evidence. And anything recorded on it is usually accepted as truth.

But what if that information is wrong?

This is one of the fundamental challenges in genealogy: how do we distinguish between fact, error, uncertainty, and occasionally, deliberate misinformation?

As genealogists, we search for truth. We gather evidence, test theories, and weigh up all available records before reaching a reasoned conclusion. But what happens when the “facts” themselves are unreliable?

When records don’t agree

Let’s look at a couple of common examples.

Sometimes the problem is a gap or inconsistency in the records themselves. A birth may be correctly recorded locally, but incorrectly copied into the national index held by the General Register Office. In effect, there are two records to consider: the original local register and the GRO index. While both are invaluable, the index is more susceptible to transcription errors and omissions.

Even timing can create confusion. A birth registered late in a quarter, or even in early January for a December birth, can lead to uncertainty: was Grandma born in 1908 or 1909?

Census records present similar issues. Between 1841 and 1901, household information was collected on paper schedules completed by residents, then copied into enumeration books by the enumerator. Those are the records we use today, but they are already one step removed from the original household schedules.

If a household was illiterate, the enumerator may have filled in the form verbally, introducing further risk of misunderstanding. And of course, there were times when individuals deliberately provided incorrect information.

We also have to consider that not all ancestors wanted to be found.

From bigamous marriages to brushes with the law, some individuals had strong reasons to avoid official records or disguise their identity. For those ancestors, tracing the truth 150 years later becomes significantly more difficult, though not impossible.

Sometimes, when certainty remains out of reach all we are left with is probability. We eliminate alternatives until only one explanation remains the most likely.

Are gravestones and certificates always reliable?

Even seemingly reliable sources such as headstones can contain errors.

The same applies to certificates. Much of the information recorded is only as accurate as the informant’s knowledge at the time. While a death date is usually reliable, birth dates are often less certain, especially when reported decades later.

From 1 April 1969, death certificates were updated to include date and place of birth, and for married or widowed women, maiden surnames. These additions can be extremely useful, but only if the information provided was correct in the first place.

Building a case from evidence

So how do genealogists decide what is true?

The key lies in evaluating all available evidence together, rather than relying on a single source.

A birth certificate, census entry, marriage record, 1939 Register entry, and military record may all relate to the same person, but each may contain slightly different information. Individually, they may conflict. Together, they can build a coherent picture.

This is where correlation becomes critical.

If multiple independent sources agree on a detail, such as a parent’s name, confidence increases. If the same information appears across records created at different times by different informants, the evidence becomes stronger still.

But we must always ask: are these truly independent sources, or are they repeating the same original error?

The quality of the informant matters

Not all evidence is equal.

We must consider:

• Who provided the information

• How close they were to the event

• How much time had passed

• Whether memory or transcription errors may have occurred

A 90-year-old informant recalling a birth many decades earlier may genuinely believe their statement, but memory is not always reliable.

Similarly, transcriptions introduce another layer of potential error, especially when handwritten records are misread or copied incorrectly.

So what is “fact”?

In genealogy, “fact” is often not absolute, it is a supported conclusion based on evidence.

The strongest conclusions come from:

• Multiple independent sources

• Contemporary records created closest to the event

• Agreement across different record types

• Careful resolution of contradictions

Even then, certainty is sometimes elusive. We work in probabilities, not absolutes.

A modern tool: DNA

Today, DNA evidence can sometimes provide confirmation where traditional paper records fall short. It can strengthen a hypothesis, break down long-standing brick walls, and in some cases, definitively confirm or disprove a line of descent.

However, DNA is not a shortcut that replaces documentary research. It still requires interpretation, careful correlation with existing records, and an understanding of matches within the wider family context. Without that, it can be just as open to misinterpretation as written records.

In many ways, DNA doesn’t change the fundamental challenge of genealogy, it reinforces it. We are still trying to build the most accurate picture from multiple sources of evidence, just with an additional and powerful layer added to the mix.

But that, of course, opens up an entirely different discussion and a subject for another article.

Final thought

So returning to our original question:

A father’s name on a birth certificate, is that a fact?

It is evidence, often very strong evidence, but it is not automatically the truth.

In genealogy, truth is not taken, it is built, carefully, from layers of evidence.

And perhaps just as importantly, it is always open to revision when new information comes to light.

A final reflection

Genealogy is rarely about certainty. It is about judgement, balance, interpretation and learning to be comfortable with ambiguity when the records don’t fully agree.

The discovery of Kathleen Lydia Wootton had already transformed my understanding of the family. What had begun as the tragic death of a six-year-old boy on a Herefordshire farm had grown into a story that stretched across Scotland, England, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Surely there could not be another chapter.

As every family historian knows, however, one answer often leads to two new questions.

Sometimes the next clue comes from a census return.

Sometimes it comes from a passenger list or a newspaper archive.

And sometimes it arrives unexpectedly in your inbox.

Shortly after publishing my research into the Gregson family, I received an email from a lady named Sheryl Whyte.

What followed would lead to one of the most remarkable discoveries of this entire journey.

Because before Alfred Arthur Gregson.

Before Kathleen Lydia Wootton.

There had been another child.

Her name was Jeanie McLeod Gregson.

And for decades she had almost disappeared from the family story.

The Child Before Alfie

Jeanie McLeod Gregson was born in Leicester on 23 September 1910, the first child of Arthur Gregson and his wife, Jeanie Smith Ritchie Sneddon.

Her middle name, McLeod, came from her mother’s family and would remain an important part of her identity throughout her life.

The 1911 Census records Jeanie living in Scotland with her mother and members of the Sneddon family, whilst Arthur appears separately in Leicester.

Why the family were living apart is impossible to say with certainty. Arthur was already building a career within the woollen industry and may simply have been working away from home. Whatever the reason, it hints at a family whose lives were already divided by geography long before tragedy entered the picture.

At this stage there was every reason to believe that Jeanie’s childhood would be ordinary.

Sadly, fate had other plans.

Tragedy Upon Tragedy

On 13 February 1914, Jeanie’s younger brother, Alfred Arthur Gregson, was born in Alloa.

Just over a month later, their mother died.

Jeanie Smith Ritchie Sneddon Gregson was only twenty-five years old.

Her death certificate records complications arising from an infection following childbirth, a stark reminder of how dangerous even routine motherhood could be in the early twentieth century.

In the space of a few weeks, Arthur Gregson found himself a widower with two very young children.

Jeanie was only three years old.

Alfred was barely a month old.

How Arthur coped is difficult to imagine.

Family recollections suggest that Frances Mary Wootton may already have been known to Arthur by this period and may even have helped care for young Alfred following his mother’s death. Whether this is true or simply family tradition is impossible to prove, but it is one of several intriguing questions that remain unanswered.

Two years later, on 3 June 1916, Arthur married Frances Mary Wootton at Byford.

By then another child had quietly entered the story.

Kathleen Lydia Wootton had been born in Islington in October 1913. No father was named on her birth certificate. Over the years family members would speculate about Kathleen’s parentage, but no evidence has ever emerged to prove who her father was.

For a time, life appears to have settled.

Then came August 1920.

And Lower House Farm.

The shooting that killed six-year-old Alfred Arthur Gregson has already been explored in the previous parts of this series.

A loaded shotgun.

A farmyard wall.

A tragic accident.

A young life lost in an instant.

The consequences would ripple through the family for decades.

The Girl Who Vanished

As I continued researching Arthur Gregson’s life, one absence became impossible to ignore.

I could trace Arthur.

I could trace Frances.

I could trace Kathleen.

Eventually I could follow their journeys to India, Australia and New Zealand.

But I could not find Jeanie.

After the tragedy of 1920, she seemed to vanish.

The harder I looked, the stranger that absence became.

Family stories suggested that she had been sent away following Alfred’s death.

Some believed she had gone to live with relatives.

Others suggested she may have been raised by one of Arthur’s brothers.

Canada was even mentioned in family recollections.

Yet despite extensive searching, I could find no documentary evidence to support any of these theories.

All I knew for certain was that Arthur’s eldest daughter appeared to have become separated from the rest of the family.

And for many years afterwards, her story seemed to disappear completely.

Jeanie Becomes Scheena

Then another clue emerged.

Not Jeanie Gregson.

Scheena Gregson.

At first I assumed I was looking at a different person entirely.

Yet the more records I examined, the more familiar details began to appear.

The middle name was McLeod.

The dates aligned.

The locations aligned.

Slowly the evidence pointed towards an extraordinary conclusion.

Jeanie McLeod Gregson and Scheena McLeod Gregson were one and the same person.

Why Jeanie became Scheena remains one of the great mysteries of this story.

Was it a family nickname?

A name given by relatives who raised her?

A way of creating a new identity after a childhood marked by loss and upheaval?

Or was there another explanation entirely?

Even her own descendants were left asking the same question. During our correspondence, one of the mysteries raised was simply:

“Why did Jeanie become Scheena?”

More than a century after her birth, no definitive answer has yet been found.

The records remain frustratingly silent.

What they do reveal is that Jeanie survived, built a life of her own and eventually married Christopher Roland Whyte.

One of the most significant discoveries placed Scheena in Coventry in 1939, providing the first concrete evidence of where Arthur’s eldest daughter had resurfaced after years of uncertainty.

The missing child had finally been found.

But the story was far from over.

A Father and Daughter Divided

As more information emerged, another piece of the puzzle came into view.

Through correspondence with descendants of Arthur Gregson’s later family in New Zealand, I was put in contact with David Gregson, Arthur’s son from his third marriage to Eunice McCulloch.

David knew stories that had survived within the family.

One detail in particular stopped me in my tracks.

According to David, Arthur had made several attempts to re-establish contact with his eldest daughter later in life.

Those attempts were unsuccessful.

Exactly when they occurred and under what circumstances is no longer clear. Like so many aspects of this story, the surviving evidence is incomplete.

Yet the fact that the story survived within the family is significant.

For years I had wondered whether Arthur and Jeanie had simply drifted apart.

Now another possibility emerged.

Perhaps they had not.

Perhaps Arthur had spent years trying to bridge a separation that neither time nor distance could repair.

If true, it adds a deeply human dimension to a story already marked by loss.

The further I followed Jeanie’s story, the harder it became to think of her as simply another name in a family tree.

She was a little girl who lost her mother, lost her brother and somehow lost contact with her father as well.

We can trace the records.

We can reconstruct the timeline.

But no certificate, census return or newspaper report can tell us how that felt.

We do not know why Jeanie became separated from her father.

We do not know who made the decision.

We do not know whether the tragedy at Lower House Farm played any direct role in what followed.

What we do know is that a little girl born in Leicester in 1910 spent much of her life apart from the father who, according to family testimony, later tried to find her again.

That fact alone is heartbreaking.

The Name She Never Lost

One small detail caught my attention during the research.

Although Jeanie McLeod Gregson became known as Scheena throughout much of her adult life, there is perhaps a subtle clue that she never entirely left her original identity behind.

One of her daughters was named Elizabeth Jean Whyte

Whether this was a conscious tribute or merely coincidence is impossible to know.

Yet it feels significant.

Perhaps, despite everything that happened, a small part of the little girl born in Leicester in 1910 remained present throughout her life.

Family history is full of such moments.

Tiny details that survive the passing of time and quietly connect one generation to the next.

A Family Reunited

Yet despite the unanswered questions, this story does not end in loss.

In fact, after nearly a century of separation, it takes an altogether more hopeful turn.

Whilst researching Jeanie McLeod Gregson, I found myself corresponding with descendants who knew parts of the story from their side of the family.

At the same time, I was learning more about Arthur Gregson’s later family in New Zealand.

Slowly a remarkable realisation emerged.

The two branches of the family had been separated for almost one hundred years.

One branch descended from Jeanie McLeod Gregson.

The other descended from Arthur Gregson’s later family in New Zealand.

Both possessed fragments of the same story.

Neither possessed the complete picture.

Then, through family memories, photographs, certificates, passenger lists, newspaper reports and countless emails, those fragments began to come together.

As photographs and records were exchanged between descendants on opposite sides of the family, the connections became increasingly difficult to ignore.

After seeing one particular family photograph, I remember writing:

“There is no doubting we have all the right pieces of the jigsaw.”

For the first time, the documentary evidence, family stories and family photographs were all pointing in the same direction.

During our correspondence, another observation stayed with me.

Reflecting on the tragedy at Lower House Farm and its long shadow over the family, one descendant remarked:

“Scheena hated guns with a passion. You couldn’t even mention guns around her.”

The thought of guns must have stayed in the family and haunted them for the rest of their lives.

Looking back across the decades, it is difficult to disagree.

The result was something I never expected when I first read a newspaper report about a tragic shooting in Herefordshire.

Branches of the same family tree, separated by tragedy, distance and time, had finally found one another again.

The Questions That Remain

One of the first lessons family history teaches us is that not every mystery can be solved.

Records survive by chance.

Memories fade.

People take secrets to their graves.

And sometimes the most important questions are the ones that leave the faintest trace behind.

Even after all the research, correspondence and discoveries that followed this story, several questions remain unanswered.

Was Arthur Gregson the biological father of Kathleen Lydia Wootton?

Why was Jeanie McLeod Gregson separated from her father and raised apart from the rest of the family?

Did the death of little Alfred Arthur Gregson contribute to the decisions that ultimately took Arthur and Frances to India, Australia and New Zealand?

The evidence allows us to speculate.

It does not allow us to know.

Perhaps it never will.

Yet what began as the story of a tragic accident at Lower House Farm became something far greater than I could ever have imagined.

A newspaper report led to a family mystery.

That mystery led to Scotland, England, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Along the way I discovered hidden stories, unexpected connections and lives that had almost disappeared from memory.

Most importantly, descendants of two branches of the same family, separated by tragedy, distance and time, were able to share their stories with one another.

For almost a century, neither side possessed the complete picture.

Now, at least, the picture is a little clearer.

We know what happened to Jeanie McLeod Gregson.

We know that Scheena Whyte and Jeanie Gregson were one and the same.

We know that Arthur never entirely forgot his eldest daughter.

And we know that despite everything that happened, the family story did not end with loss.

It continued.

In many ways, that is what family history is really about.

Not simply discovering who our ancestors were.

But rediscovering one another.

And perhaps that is the most remarkable part of this story of all.

Without little Alfie, none of these discoveries would ever have been made.
