He could just say it: don’t go near the ridge. Instead he tells them what happened there. The eyes catching the firelight. The twig snapping under a paw. The sprint back to camp with his heart slamming against his ribs.

That’s the moment I keep coming back to this week, because it explains something every memoirist eventually has to reckon with: why the scene beats the summary, every single time.

"Where One Hears the Rain," a Storytelling Workshop is a reader-supported publication. They call it “neural coupling.” When information arrives as fact, the brain treats it like a filing clerk treats paperwork. It routes the sound to Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, translates it into meaning, and stores it. Cold, efficient, forgettable.

Story does something else entirely. When the hunter describes the chill off the mountain, the listeners’ own sensory cortices light up, as if the wind were touching their skin too. When he gets to the leap of the animal, their motor cortices twitch with the same impulse to run. Two separate minds, briefly, start acting like one. That’s not a metaphor. That’s measurable.

And the brain doesn’t just light up, it doses itself. Tension in the telling raises cortisol, which is what locks your attention in place and won’t let you look away. The vulnerable parts, the moment the hunter admits he was afraid, release oxytocin, the same chemical that bonds a parent to a child, and it’s what turns a stranger’s story into something you feel is partly your own. Then the resolution hits, the sprint that ends in survival, and dopamine seals the whole thing into memory like wax over a letter.

None of this is decoration. It’s why our ancestors who paid attention to stories outlived the ones who only paid attention to facts. A well-told danger let the whole tribe rehearse the danger without anyone getting hurt.

I bring all this up because it’s the entire argument for memoir, condensed into one prehistoric campfire. When a student tells me “my father was a difficult man,” nothing happens in the room. No coupling, no chemistry, no memory. But when that same student tells me about the specific Tuesday her father stood in the kitchen doorway and wouldn’t let her past until she’d redone her homework, correctly, standing there in his work boots, that’s when something ignites. That’s not a claim about her father. That’s an ember. And the reader’s brain does what brains have always done near a fire: it leans in and makes the scene its own.

This is why I keep pushing you, in class and in these pages, to trade your conclusions for your scenes. “I felt abandoned” is a filing cabinet. The room where it happened, what you could smell, what was said and what wasn’t, that’s the fire. Let the reader supply the word “abandoned” themselves. Their brain will do it faster and more permanently than your sentence ever could.

We didn’t outgrow any of this. We just moved the fire indoors, onto a page, into a theater, across a dinner table. The mechanism hasn’t changed since before we had a word for it.

A note on sourcing: the article that sparked this piece was passed along to me by my friend Ray Raines, whose book I’m helping him write. There’s a myth floating around that memoir only counts if it costs you something. That the genre demands full disclosure, like a confession booth with a book deal at the end. People think if they hold anything back, they’re cheating the reader, or worse, cheating themselves.

I tell them all the same thing. You never have to share anything you don’t want to share.

Nothing is mandatory here. Memoir isn’t a deposition. Certain things are nobody’s business, and they shouldn’t be. Writing in the first person doesn’t obligate you to come clean on every count. If anything, it asks you to do the harder thing, which is to choose. Not to dump everything on the page and call that honesty, but to select the moments that carry the truth you’re actually trying to tell.

That distinction matters. A memoir isn’t the complete record of your life. It’s a curated one. You’re not a court reporter transcribing every minute. You’re a writer deciding what belongs in this particular story, the one you’re actually telling, not the one you imagine some reader is hoping to pry out of you.

I think the pressure comes from a misunderstanding about what makes memoir work. People assume the shock is the substance. That the more exposed you are, the more powerful the writing becomes. But readers don’t stay for the exposure. They stay for the honesty of what’s on the page, however much or little that turns out to be. A memoir can be deeply true and still leave entire rooms of a life closed off. Those two things aren’t in conflict.

So when a client tells me there’s a chapter of their life they’re not ready to open up, or one they never intend to open up, I don’t push. I ask what they do want to say. Because there’s always a story sitting right next to the one they’re avoiding, and often it turns out to be the more interesting one anyway.

Here’s the part I really want to land this week. Once the book is out, you’re the one who has to live with it. Not your reader. Not your agent. Not your publisher, however much they might push for something juicier. You. That should be the only vote that counts when you’re deciding what stays in and what stays out.

Write toward what you’re willing to stand behind. That’s the whole assignment.

My book about all of this is Not the finish line. The place where the real work becomes visible.

Here’s what I mean. The first pass through a story is usually an act of retrieval. You’re pulling details up from wherever they’ve been sitting. The kitchen table. The hospital hallway. The voice on the phone that told you the news. You get it all down, and that’s not nothing. That’s the hard part, people tell themselves. But it’s only half the hard part.

What’s often missing from a first draft isn’t detail. It’s understanding. You’ve told me what happened. You haven’t yet told me what it meant, or what it represents, or why it still sits in you the way it does. Those aren’t things you usually know on the first attempt. You find them by writing past the facts and into the reckoning.

This is why some stories need to be written, revised, and then essentially started over. Not because the first version failed. Because the first version did its job: it surfaced the material. Now you can look at it with different eyes and ask what it’s actually about.

When you rewrite from that place, you’re not starting from nothing. You’re starting from knowledge you didn’t have the first time around. That’s when the emotional architecture shows up. The connective tissue. The thing that makes a reader feel the story instead of just following it.

I’m not telling you to throw out your pages. I’m telling you not to be afraid when you sense that a piece you thought was finished is asking to be opened back up. That’s not failure. That’s the story letting you know it’s ready for the next stage. Sometimes when you think you’re finished, you’ve actually just begun.

My book about all It lived in the space between them, in how the artist chose to set one small piece of glass beside the next.

I think about that a lot when I’m working with memoir writers, because so many of you get stuck at the same spot. You have the scenes. You have the memories, vivid ones, the kind that show up uninvited while you’re doing dishes or driving home. What you don’t have is the thread that ties them into one continuous story, and so you sit there convinced you can’t start until you find it.

"Where One Hears the Rain," a Storytelling Workshop is a reader-supported publication. You don’t need it.

For years I’ve taught the Hero’s Journey and In Medias Res as entry points into memoir structure, and they’re both still worth knowing. But they both assume the same thing: that a life reads best as one throughline, a single arc bending from beginning to end. Plenty of lives don’t work that way, and plenty of the best memoirs ever written don’t either. Sandra Cisneros never gave The House on Mango Street a plot. She gave it forty-four small, self-contained pieces, and let the accumulation do what plot usually does.

That’s the mosaic principle. You write your life in fragments: the smell of a specific kitchen at six in the morning, a fight in a parking lot, the exact words someone used the day they left. Each one stands on its own. None of them needs the others to make sense. But set them side by side in the right order, and something appears that no single fragment could hold by itself, a whole life, seen the way memory actually works. Not as a straight line, but as a handful of bright, particular moments the mind keeps returning to.

What I like about this structure is what it gives writers permission to stop doing. You can stop forcing a transition between the summer you were nine and the year your marriage ended, just because they happened in that order. You can stop writing connective tissue that isn’t true just to make the manuscript feel like it flows. A mosaic doesn’t ask you to explain how you got from one memory to the next. It asks you to choose the right memories, and to trust the reader to feel what sits in the gap between them.

That trust is the hard part, honestly. Mosaic writing looks easy because the individual pieces are short, but it demands more precision than a traditional arc, not less. Every fragment has to earn its place with specificity, because there’s no plot momentum to carry a vague one. And your voice has to stay remarkably consistent from piece to piece, because there’s no narrator explaining the connections for you. When it works, though, it captures something a straight line never quite can: the truth that most of us don’t experience our own lives as a story. We experience them as moments. Bright ones. The kind that stay lit long after the years around them go dim.

If this way of thinking about structure appeals to you, it happens to be exactly what we’re diving into this fall. The new online memoir session starts Monday, September 14, six Mondays in a row, 5 to 7 PM, and the mosaic principle is the centerpiece. I’d love to have you there. (Just shoot me an email-chris@chrisepting.com)

Either way, try picking up a pen this week and writing just one fragment. Don’t worry yet about where it fits. Trust me, that part comes later.

— Chris

My book about lal of this is Most people who say this really have lived something worth telling. A friend or a family member noticed it first, the way an outsider often sees a shape you can’t see from inside your own life. That instinct is usually right. The story is there.

But hearing “you should write a book” and actually sitting down to write one are two very different things. I’ve watched people freeze at that gap. They picture two hundred and fifty pages, a structure, an arc, a beginning and middle and end that somehow has to hold together. It’s an enormous ask to put in front of yourself before you’ve written a single sentence.

So here’s what I tell people instead: don’t start with the book. Start with one story.

Pick a single afternoon. A single conversation. A single moment where something changed. Write that. Just that. Get it down from beginning to end, with real detail, the way you’d tell it to a friend over dinner. Master that one piece before you worry about anything larger.

Here’s the part that surprises people: a book is not one long continuous performance. A memoir is a collection of stories. That’s it. Once you understand how to build a single story, one that has a shape, a turn, a landing, you’ve learned the actual unit of construction. Everything after that is arrangement.

When you’ve written four or five of these on your own, something starts to happen. Patterns show up. You notice the same themes surfacing in different decades of your life. You start to see what the book actually wants to be about, not what you assumed it would be about when you started. That’s when an outline becomes possible. Not before.

So if you’re one of the many people who’ve been told you should write a book, don’t let that sentence become pressure. Let it become an invitation to write one story. Just one. Everything else follows from there.

My book about all of this is here.
<div They’ve worked on it, revised it, maybe read it to a spouse or a friend before bringing it to the group. They finish reading, look up, and wait for reactions.

"Where One Hears the Rain," a Storytelling Workshop is a reader-supported publication. Before anyone offers praise or feedback, I usually ask a simple question.

“Why did you write it that way?”

Not “what did you mean.” Not “tell us more about your mother.” Just: why this scene, why these details, why did you choose to start here and end there.

And almost every time, something happens that the page didn’t do. The writer starts talking, unguarded, and details come pouring out that weren’t in the piece at all. The smell of the kitchen. The exact words her father said before he left the room. The fact that she was wearing her brother’s jacket that day, and she still doesn’t know why that detail matters to her, only that it does.

None of that was in the draft. All of it belongs in the next one.

I’ve come to think there are two different acts happening when someone writes a memoir piece, and they are not the same act. The first is composition. You sit down, you shape a memory into sentences, you make choices about structure and pacing, and you produce something that holds together. That’s real work and it matters.

But the second act, the one that happens when you’re asked to explain yourself out loud, right after, while the memory is still warm, is something else entirely. It’s not composition. It’s excavation. You’re not choosing words anymore. You’re reaching for the thing underneath the words, the thing you didn’t quite know how to write yet because you hadn’t fully admitted it to yourself.

I think this happens because writing and talking pull from different places. When you write, you’re managing an audience, even if that audience is just you. You’re editing as you go, deciding what belongs and what’s too much, what’s embarrassing, what might make you look foolish or unkind. That editing instinct is useful, but it’s also a filter, and filters catch things.

Talking right after reading, especially when someone else is asking a real question, bypasses that filter. You’re not composing anymore. You’re just trying to answer honestly, in real time, in front of people who are actually listening. The guard drops a little. And what comes out in that unguarded moment is very often the truest material in the entire piece.

I’ve watched this happen enough times now that I build it into every session on purpose. I don’t let a reading stand alone. I always follow it with questions, and not soft ones. Why that memory and not another from the same year? What were you not saying? What do you wish you’d included? What almost didn’t make it into the piece and why did you leave it out?

That last question is usually the one that cracks something open. People will tell you, almost apologetically, about the detail they cut because it felt too small, or too strange, or too painful. And that detail is nearly always the one that should have been on the page from the start.

Here’s the part I want every memoir writer reading this to take seriously. If you’re writing alone, without a workshop, without someone to ask you these questions, you are missing half the process. You can still get at this material, but you have to be willing to interrogate yourself the way a good listener would. After you finish a draft, don’t just reread it. Talk about it, out loud, to someone, or even to a recorder if you have to. Ask yourself the hard question a workshop partner would ask. Why this scene. Why this year. What did you leave out and why.

Then go back and write the second draft with that answer sitting right in front of you.

This is the layer that turns a competent memory into a vivid one. Not more polish. Not better sentences. A second telling, spoken instead of written, unfiltered instead of composed, that gives you access to the details your first draft was too careful to include.

The story you read aloud is rarely the whole story. The conversation that follows it usually is.

My book about all of this is here.
<div What did the kitchen smell like. What did the vinyl seat of your father’s truck feel like against the back of your legs in July. What did the ocean sound like from your bedroom window at night.

And then someone asked about dialogue. Where does it fit in all this?

"Where One Hears the Rain," a Storytelling Workshop is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

I found myself telling them something I hadn’t quite put into words before, even after all these years of teaching this: dialogue is sensory writing. It’s not a separate category sitting off to the side of your sensory toolkit. It’s arguably the most immediate sense you have access to on the page, because dialogue is sound. It’s the one sensory detail that doesn’t require the reader to imagine an approximation of an experience — it lets them hear it, in something close to real time.

Think about how memory actually works. You may not remember the color of your grandmother’s kitchen wallpaper. But you remember exactly how she said your name when you’d done something wrong — the particular flattening of her vowels, the pause before it, the way it was three syllables instead of two. That’s not information. That’s sound living in your body twenty, thirty, fifty years later.

When you write “she called me by my full name, the way she always did when I was in trouble,” you’re telling the reader something happened. When you write it as dialogue — her actual clipped, particular way of saying it — you’re letting them hear it. And once a reader can hear a voice, they’re not reading about your life anymore. They’re standing in the room.

This is why dialogue in memoir shouldn’t be smoothed out into perfect grammar or generic phrasing. The rhythm of how someone actually spoke — the incomplete sentences, the regional turns of phrase, the words they leaned on, the things they never quite said directly — that specificity is the sensory detail. It’s doing the same work as the smell of your mother’s coffee or the particular creak of a screen door. It’s putting the reader inside the scene through their ears instead of their nose or their skin.

So here’s the shift I want to offer you this week: the next time you’re revising a memoir scene, don’t just ask “is this dialogue accurate?” Ask “does this dialogue sound like something only this person would say, in this exact way?” If the answer is yes, you’re not just reporting speech. You’re doing sensory writing — you’re giving your reader something to hear, and once they can hear it, they’re already there with you.

That’s the whole trick of scene work, really. You’re not describing the past. You’re recreating the conditions under which someone else can feel like they lived it too.

<a A stretch of hours when the mind is sharp, the interior noise quiets down, and the words come with something close to ease. The trick is finding yours and then protecting it like it’s the most important appointment of your day — because it is.

For me, that window opens somewhere around seven in the morning and closes around ten or eleven. Those hours feel different from the rest of the day. The world hasn’t fully intruded yet. My mind is rested, alert, and loose in the right way. What I write during that stretch tends to be truer, more specific, more alive than what I produce later in the afternoon when the mental clutter has piled up. I’ve learned not to fight that. I’ve learned to show up for it.

You may be wired completely differently, and that’s the point. Some writers come alive at midnight. Others hit their stride right after lunch. A few do their clearest thinking in the late afternoon, once the day has settled. None of these are wrong. What’s wrong is ignoring the pattern and just writing whenever — treating your memoir like a task to check off rather than a creative practice that deserves your sharpest hours.

Finding your window takes a little honest observation. For the next week or two, pay attention to when writing feels most natural. When do your sentences come out whole rather than in pieces? When do you surprise yourself with a detail or a turn of phrase you didn’t know was coming? When do you sit back from the page and think, “yes, that’s it”? Write those moments down. A pattern will emerge.

Once you find it, build around it. If your window is early morning, protect your mornings. Don’t schedule calls. Don’t open email first. Don’t start scrolling. Give that time to the work before you give it to anything else. If your window is late at night, stop apologizing for being a night owl and set up your space accordingly.

This matters especially in memoir because memoir asks something harder of you than most other kinds of writing. You’re not just arranging words. You’re excavating memory, sifting through decades, making sense of your own life. That work requires the best version of your brain, not the leftover version.

There will be days when you have to write outside your window. Deadlines don’t always care about your peak hours, and life has a way of filling up the good parts of the morning before you even notice. Write then anyway. But know it’s the B shift, and give yourself a little grace for it.

What you’re really doing when you find and honor your window is telling yourself that this work matters. That your story deserves the same quality of attention you’d give to anything important. That you’re not just fitting your memoir in around your life — you’re making your memoir part of how you live.

Start by asking yourself one simple question this week: When do I feel most like a writer?

The answer is your window. Go open it.

My book about all of this is here.

<a If you’re telling your true story, how much do you owe the other people in it? You lived it too. You’re entitled to your version. So where’s the line?

"Where One Hears the Rain," a Storytelling Workshop is a reader-supported publication. It’s a story about you that necessarily includes other people, and they didn’t sign up to be characters. Your sister, your ex-husband, your old boss, your father. They have their own memory of what happened, their own wound or pride attached to it, and no say in how you render them on the page. That asymmetry is uncomfortable, and it should be. If it doesn’t bother you at all, you’re probably not paying close enough attention to what you’re doing.

But here’s the other half of it. You’re not obligated to write a version of events that everyone in your family would approve of. That memoir doesn’t exist, because that memoir would be fiction. The whole reason people read this genre is that someone was willing to tell the truth as they experienced it, including the parts that don’t flatter anyone, including themselves. A memoir scrubbed clean of anything that might upset somebody isn’t honest, and readers can feel the difference between a writer who’s being careful with the truth and one who’s avoiding it.

So you’re working with two real obligations that pull against each other. Tell the truth. Don’t be cruel. Most of the anxiety my students feel about this comes from treating those as the same obligation, when they’re not.

A few distinctions that help me when I’m working through this, whether it’s my own pages or a client’s.

**Your feelings are not the same as your facts.** You’re always entitled to write how something felt to you, what you believed, what you were afraid of, what you didn’t understand until years later. That’s yours, full stop. Where it gets trickier is when you’re asserting what someone else did, said, or meant. Those are claims about another person’s actions, and they carry more weight. The emotional truth is unimpeachable. The factual claims deserve more scrutiny, partly for ethical reasons and partly because memory is unreliable and you don’t want to be wrong about something you’re putting in print.

**There’s a difference between exposing someone and explaining yourself.** If a scene exists because it shows what you went through, that’s memoir. If a scene exists mainly to humiliate someone or settle a score, that’s something else, and readers usually sense it even when they can’t name it. Ask yourself why a difficult scene needs to be in the book. If the honest answer is “because it happened to me and it shaped who I am,” include it. If the honest answer is closer to “because I want this person to look bad,” that’s worth sitting with before you write it.

**Private people deserve more protection than public ones.** A parent, a sibling, a childhood friend who never asked for any of this gets more consideration than, say, a public figure acting in a public role. I’m not talking about legal exposure here, that’s a separate conversation, I’m talking about basic fairness. The barista who was rude to you once is not the same as the parent whose addiction shaped your whole childhood. Use your judgment about how much real estate someone gets in your book relative to how much they actually shaped the story.

**Changing a name doesn’t give you a free pass, and it shouldn’t.** A lot of writers think disguising someone solves the ethical problem. It solves a legal problem, sometimes. It doesn’t solve the question of whether you’re being fair to the person underneath the pseudonym. If you’d be ashamed for them to recognize themselves and call you on it, the name change isn’t doing the work you think it’s doing.

**Showing someone a draft is not the same as asking permission.** You don’t need anyone’s sign-off to write your own life. But there’s a real difference between writing in a vacuum and giving someone who appears prominently in your book a chance to say, “that’s not quite how I remember it,” or, “I’d rather you not include this specific detail.” You can still make your own decision afterward. But you’ll make a better one, and you’ll sleep better, having heard them out first.

I’ll tell you honestly that I don’t think you should write with a lawyer sitting on your shoulder, second-guessing every sentence. That kind of fear produces flat, hedged, lifeless prose, and a memoir that’s afraid of its own material isn’t worth writing. But there’s a difference between writing fearlessly and writing carelessly. Fearless means you’re willing to tell the hard truth even when it costs you something. Careless means you never stopped to ask whether the truth you’re telling is actually yours to tell, or whether you’re settling a score and calling it honesty.

The test I come back to, again and again, with my own work and with everyone I collaborate with: would I still write this scene if the person in it were standing behind me reading over my shoulder, not to approve it, but just to witness it? Not “would they like it.” They probably wouldn’t. But would I still feel, looking them in the eye, that what I wrote was fair?

If the answer is yes, write it, and write it well. If the answer is no, that’s not necessarily a reason to cut the scene. It might be a reason to write it again, until it’s true and fair at the same time. That second pass is usually where the better book is hiding anyway.

My book about all of this is here.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
