Maybe in the jungle, maybe in someone’s living room, maybe under clinical supervision. Something cracked open. The walls you didn’t know you’d built came down, the story you’d been telling about yourself lost its grip, and for a moment — or many moments — you saw something true.

And then it ended.

And you had to figure out what to do with that.

This is where most people get lost. Not in the ceremony — in the aftermath. Because psychedelics open doors. They don’t walk you through them.

Plant medicine has been with us since the beginning — not as a trend, but as an essential technology of human healing. Indigenous traditions across the world have used these allies to access the sacred, process trauma, dissolve the calcified structures of the ego, and remember what we are beneath our wounds. Current research at institutions like Johns Hopkins confirms what those traditions always knew: these medicines work. They break the grip of the Default Mode Network — that neural hub of identity and self-reference — and in that loosening, healing becomes possible.

But the loosening is not the healing. It’s the precondition for it.

Psychedelics show you where you’re stuck, why intimacy is hard, what you buried to get on with things. They crack the egg. What comes out of the egg, and where it goes — that’s yours to determine. Many people mistake the opening for the destination and return to ceremony again and again looking for the experience rather than doing the work the experience pointed toward. This isn’t weakness. It’s the oldest trap in the book — looking outside for what can only be found inside.

Integration is the real work. It is taking all the pieces that broke apart and choosing consciously how to reassemble them. Not back into the old shape — into something more true. It is daily self-inquiry. It is unpacking the persona you built to survive. It is looking at the unconscious agendas beneath your choices and taking ownership of them. It is a way of life, not an event.

So where does that path lead?

High above the jungles of Peru — where so many of our plant allies and their ceremonies originate — there is another ancient healing tradition. Not jungle medicine but mountain medicine. The Andean path. Practiced by the descendants of the Inka in the high passes above the treeline, without psychotropic plants, without the darkness of the forest. This is the path of the paqo — the Andean priest-healer — and it is the natural complement to everything plant medicine opens.

The difference between jungle and mountain is more than geography. In the jungle, the unknown lurks in the foliage. The spiritual traditions that emerge from that environment navigate spirits, shadows, and forces that move through the dark. In the high Andes you can see for miles. There is no hiding. The darkness here is understood as internal — not a curse from outside but the unconscious, waiting to be owned and integrated. Everything is kawsay, conscious living energy. Nothing is inherently malevolent. The work is to refine yourself into a more coherent instrument of that energy.

Where jungle medicine cracks you open, the Andean path shows you how to rebuild. Its core principles — Munay (unconditional love), Ayni (energetic reciprocity with the living world), and Karpay (personal power in relationship with creation) — are a complete architecture for living after the egg breaks. Not a spiritual escape from ordinary life but a path of bringing the sacred into it. Creating heaven on earth, not escaping earth for heaven.

The paqo’s path — the qanchispatañan, or seven levels of personal evolution — is the long walk up the mountain after the ceremony ends. It is not about becoming a shaman. It is about becoming an evolved human being. One who has made peace with their darkness, owns their divinity, and knows how to move energy rather than be moved by it.

This is what lies on the other side of the psychedelic doorway.

The jungle opens it. The mountain teaches you to live in the new territory.

Both are medicine. In the right sequence, together, they are a complete path.

The Paqo Path

Share

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. free. They talk about it. They talk to it. They rail against it. They distract themselves from it. But they keep looping… It’s like they are trapped inside a pillowcase punching at the fabric but never able to break through it.

As a therapist you know the terrain. You’ve mapped the parts, tracked the narrative, maybe even suggested medication to manage their despair… the desperation… the depression, anxiety, insomnia, and addictions. And some of it helps. Until it doesn’t. What if the place you need to work is way upstream?

Current Western approaches to trauma assume the mind is generated by the brain. Map the malfunction, adjust the chemistry, fix the part. It’s a framework that has helped many people — and also left many still looping.

But what if the brain isn’t generating the mind? What if it’s translating it? Physics has already shown us that matter, broken down far enough, becomes energy — and that energy operates by entirely different rules. We may be at a similar threshold with consciousness. Rather than the brain being the origin of the mind, it may be more like a receiver — decoding a field of consciousness into perception, sensation, emotion, experience. If that’s true, then medicating the brain doesn’t heal the mind. It quiets the signal.

The pillowcase phenomenon, from this perspective, may well be a form of consciousness the mind generates in response to trauma. The self-consciousness of the mind freezes at the moment of trauma, creating a divide within the mind substrate. Part of the mind crystallizes into a less fluid, more frozen state. Within this sub-architecture of the mind we find the consciousness of the person at the moment they froze. It cannot flow like the rest of them can. So it gets tagged by the brain as a problem. The brain reads this split as a challenge to survival.

The pillowcase effect shows the separation of self the client experiences as a result of having gone through a period of physiological and psychological freeze — where the mind and body went into a temporary state of paralysis. This paralysis is a configuration of consciousness that remains as a residue in the mind’s field. But it is also woven throughout the body. To address the looping and vigilance that follows freeze-based trauma, we would want to work with recalibrating the consciousness driving the body’s perceptions, rather than modulate the molecular soup of the brain. Not that that doesn’t stabilize someone temporarily — but do they heal?

In this model, trauma is a perturbation in the web of a person’s personal consciousness — a pulse of chaos that reorganizes someone’s very energetic structure, resulting in all the symptoms we manage and all the parts we talk to. The freeze consciousness becomes its own organizing principle, directing the mind toward coping and the brain toward survival. Yes, it affects the brain. But instead of the brain being the origin of the problem, the brain is both reflecting this perturbation in consciousness and tuning itself to protect from it. Healing from trauma is ultimately about reorganizing personal consciousness. As that shifts, the brain shifts.

So how do we do that?

Not through more analysis of the parts. Through working upstream — at the level of the consciousness generating them.

There’s a healing tradition that has been doing exactly this for thousands of years. Not through peer-reviewed studies, but through something equally rigorous: empiricism. You use it. You watch what happens. You refine. The Andean healing traditions have been perfecting their engagement with conscious living energy — what they simply call sami — for millennia. Their proof is in the efficacy: when you engage with conscious living energy, it engages back.

They didn’t need quantum physics to get there. They just never stopped paying attention.

The Three Parts

In the Andean cosmovision everything is conscious living energy, or sami. Specifically, we are a set of three different conscious energy configurations: a core seed self, a body, and a mind or egoic self. Think of them as three concentric circles.

At the center we find the inka muju — the seed. An immutable divine intelligence, a specific individuated blueprint of self that cannot be broken or destroyed. No experiences in the world can change it. None. This is who we are. Pure essence, pure being-ness. Our home base, our internal GPS, living in seed form just under our hearts.

Surrounding the seed is the hanchi — the body, the soma. In our terms this would include the nervous system, equipped not only with the biological hardware we know, but also a set of energetic eyes, or ñawis, running the length of the spine. Just as the ears, eyes and skin pull in information about our environment, so too do these conical perceptive lenses. I see these as energetic transducers — translators of the fields of both personal and external consciousness we live in, into impulse, insight, intuition, emotion, and instinct. Things we can feel. The body, too, is conscious living energy. It is designed to translate the seed consciousness to sensation too — it is just subtler.

And finally, around both the seed and the body, there is the third aspect we receive at birth: the poqpo — a dynamic field of conscious living energy that carries every imprint of everything that has ever happened to us. It is the social interface, the organization of our mind, our egoic self. The Andean version of where the wounding and the narratives live. The parts. From queries by anthropologists, our best analogy is this: the poqpo is the soul self.

All three of these aspects of self form the wasi, or temple, of who we are: human configurations of intertwined conscious living energy. Different forms of the same substrate, speaking to each other, informing each other, and engaging with each other to create a life experience.

Trauma, in this framework, lives as distortion and imprint in the poqpo, which informs the hanchi. The survival incentive binds the pair to override the GPS messages of the seed. Healing from trauma, from this perspective, is a reconfiguration of consciousness problem.

Coherence, Not Management

We heal by melting down the frozen or disorganized energetic configurations trauma sets up and allowing them to reorganize around the seed. The seed is the ocean of divine essence innate to that being. We are restoring coherence between the body, the mind, and the seed — where the seed orchestrates the experience of being, instead of the trauma.

Think of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. The caterpillar does not break down into parts and rearrange them. It completely liquifies and reorganizes around some internal principle of consciousness into a completely different configuration — a butterfly.

For humans this reorganization requires intervention. We are adaptive creatures who will march on in our dysfunction — talking about it, taking medications for it, indulging in distractions from it, looping in our narratives about it — if we don’t stop to break it down. Breaking it down ultimately requires an energetic reorganization. We have to melt the dysfunction down and allow the person’s consciousness to reconfigure around their seed.

What It Actually Looks Like

In practice, this work begins with the poqpo — the energetic field carrying the freeze imprint. While we do talk about what brought the client in, our real work begins on the table. We run various forms of tuned sami through the poqpo, the hanchi, and the seed. Moving sami through the poqpo gives the practitioner feedback about where the freeze lives, as frozen sami, or hucha — and as it begins to melt, emotions release, trauma tremors release. The system starts to move again.

Once that purgative process is complete, the seed becomes an available resource. Sami can then reconfigure the hanchi and the poqpo around it. The seed doesn’t need to be taught or coaxed. It knows what it is. We’re just removing what obscures it.

This isn’t talk therapy with energy language layered on top. The sequence matters. The level of intervention matters. We are working with a different substance than thought. We are working with what created it.

What This Points Toward

The parts, the narratives, the compensating structures — these are intelligent adaptations to a system that lost its organizing principle. They deserve respect and skillful attention. They are the particle aspect of light.

But beneath all the parts there is an ocean. When trauma hits, parts of this ocean cool down and freeze. This creates currents and distortions. Frozen oceans do not carry messages from the seed well. We are no longer fluid. We feel separate from the outside world but also from ourselves. So all we see is the looping and anxiety, the anxiety and addictions. The pillowcase.

Beneath the frozen and the roiling there is a seed that trauma could never destroy. Healing is not the endless management of what grew up around those wounds. It is creating the conditions — safety, love, precise intervention at the right level in the right sequence — for the whole system to remember who it is and what it was always originally organized around.

The seed. The essence. Beaming through clear waters.

We are more than parts and molecules.

We are divine essence wanting to express itself, fully.

Share

Andean Mysticism Training

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. But now you can’t stop.

The worth meter runs constantly, even when you’re not looking at it. It’s a ping pong match happening in your head. You were hurt, or only rewarded when you achieved, so you serve up an accomplishment to overcome that. When you receive approval you return that worth ball to yourself with a little spin of validation. You feel briefly vindicated. Then the ball is in the air again and you’re already moving. The game never stops because stopping feels like losing. You feel it as restlessness. As the inability to sit still. As the next thing always waiting. Many overachievers don’t even register it as anxiety — they just know they can’t put the paddle down. Because when the ball stops moving, the silence says: not enough.

Here’s what the silence is actually saying: nothing.

It’s just silence.

Your worth was never in the ball.

In the path of Neuromysticism, we understand the self as three configurations of consciousness — the seed, the body and nervous system, and the egoic personality. The ego is the outer layer. It’s programmable, responsive, and deeply invested in the worth game. But the seed — your core divine self at the center — is immutable. It cannot be devalued. It cannot be lost. It was never up for evaluation. It simply is, quietly beaming your personal blueprint through everything you are, whether you’re performing or not.

The ego doesn’t know this. The ego thinks it is you.

That’s the mistaken identity. And deserving — that whole architecture of I deserve this, I don’t deserve that — is the ego’s game, not reality. Deserving is expectation dressed up as truth. It has nothing to do with your actual value, which was given, not earned, and cannot be taken.

It shows up most brutally in intimacy. Not sex — emotional intimacy. The place where you’d have to show up as yourself rather than your achievements. And that’s exactly where the performer freezes. Because if you stop performing and they still leave — what does that mean? The ego can’t risk finding out. So it keeps spinning, keeps achieving, keeps offering the trophy instead of the person. And wonders why connection never quite lands.

Here’s the thing about intimacy: you cannot achieve it. It isn’t a reward. It’s what happens when you stop performing long enough for another person to actually find you. The performer drives right past that, looking for the next fix of validation. And slowly, quietly, destroys the very thing it’s trying to earn.

Your emotions are the way home. Not the anxiety of the worth meter — that’s the ego’s alarm system. The quieter signals. The ones underneath. Those lead back to the seed, to the self that never needed to earn anything, that was whole before the world told it otherwise.

The worth game has a way out. Not through more achievement. Through recognition — that the player and the prize were never what you thought they were.

You were enough before you did anything.

You still are.

Share

Restore Your Balance

.

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. tradition, everything in creation is made of kawsay — conscious, living energy. Mountains breathe. Rivers listen. Rocks remember. All of reality begins in the kawsaypacha, an immaterial field of divine energy, and unfolds into form. From this perspective, nothing is inert or lifeless—everything is an extension of Source, awake and participating in the web of existence.

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. Unlike many spiritual or religious traditions that rely on intermediaries—angels, saints, spirit guides—mysticism holds that divine connection is innate. The sacred speaks through experience, not dogma.

Materialism: The World as Machine

Where mystical traditions like those of the Andes see all matter as alive and sacred, Western science offers a different lens: materialism. This belief system holds that the universe is made of inert particles—tiny building blocks like protons and electrons—arranged into atoms, molecules, and eventually everything we can touch and see.

In materialism, matter isn’t alive—it’s structure. A cell is not a being; it’s a machine made of molecules. A rock is not a spirit; it’s a solid lattice of minerals. The human body, too, is just an assembly of biological parts obeying physical laws. And consciousness? Just a byproduct of a complex brain.

This is the world of Newtonian physics: measurable, predictable, mechanical. It has given us airplanes, antibiotics, smartphones, and satellites. But it has also quietly shaped how we think about life itself—as something separate, limited, and devoid of inherent meaning.

In this view, there is no living energy animating the cosmos. There is no divine intelligence flowing through you. There are only atoms, moving according to laws.

Energy: The Invisible Medium of Life

While materialism teaches us to trust only what we can see and measure, the Andean worldview reminds us that life is more than particles—it is energy in motion. Not metaphorically. Literally.

In this tradition, energy is the animating force of the cosmos. Everything is made of it. Everything radiates it. You can feel it in your own body: the tingle in your hands when you pray, the heaviness in your chest during grief, the spark of joy in your gut when you’re aligned with purpose.

To the Western-trained mind, this may sound vague or unscientific. But in energy medicine, it is a working reality. Healers feel blockages. They sense flow. They guide energy with breath, intention, touch, or ritual. It’s not belief—it’s perception.

This isn’t just mystical thinking, either. Modern physics tells us that even “solid” matter is 99.999% empty space. At the quantum level, particles flicker in and out of being. The universe hums with energy we don’t yet understand.

In this light, healing isn’t just physical—it’s energetic. We are not broken machines; we are rivers with blockages, and energy is the water that wants to flow.

Consciousness: The Mystery That Knows Itself

What is consciousness? Science calls it an emergent property of the brain—a trick of neurons and synapses. But if you’ve ever been cracked open by grief or touched by grace, you know consciousness is more than a computational glitch. It is presence—awareness itself—the field in which experience unfolds.

In the Andean mystical worldview, consciousness is not in the brain. The brain is in consciousness. Just as a wave arises from the ocean, your awareness arises from a vast, intelligent field that surrounds and permeates everything.

This isn’t just poetic thinking. Some physicists and philosophers now wonder if consciousness might be fundamental—more basic than matter or time. In this view, we are not machines that have consciousness; we are expressions of it.

Trauma disrupts this natural coherence. It splits awareness, creates disconnection. We leave the body to escape pain. We numb. We freeze. Healing, then, is the return of consciousness to the body. It is presence reinhabiting form.

Every breath, every ritual, every moment of awe is an invitation to come home—to remember that we are not separate, not broken, not alone. We are consciousness, waking up to itself.

The Myth of Separation and the Mystery of Entanglement

We live inside a myth so old we rarely see it: the myth of separation. It tells us that you are over there, and I am over here. That my body ends at my skin. That the world is made of parts.

But modern physics is cracking that myth open. At the smallest scales of matter, particles behave in strange, relational ways. They become entangled—meaning what happens to one instantly affects the other, even across vast distances. There’s no signal. No delay. No local cause. Just knowing.

Entanglement isn’t a metaphor—it’s a measured reality. And yet, it echoes what mystics have always known: that we are not separate beings, but expressions of one indivisible field of consciousness.

The Andean kawsaypacha—the immaterial field of living energy—is not so different from what quantum physicists now describe: an invisible substratum from which all things emerge, already connected, already aware.

If this is true, then perhaps we are not broken. Perhaps we are not lost. Perhaps healing is not about adding something new, but removing what blocks the flow of what has always been connected.

Trauma, Filters, and the Loss of Self

From the moment the brain comes online, it begins filtering reality—shaping what we pay attention to, what we forget, and who we think we are. This is a survival strategy. But when trauma strikes, the filter narrows. The world becomes dangerous. The self contracts.

To cope, we build identities that make sense of the pain: “I’m unlovable.” “I’m not safe.” “I’m broken.” These aren’t just beliefs—they’re grooves in the brain, reinforced by a neural network known as the Default Mode Network, or DMN. This network keeps our story running. But when trauma is stored in the body, that story becomes a prison.

In the materialist model, we treat this with chemistry—molecules to adjust mood or behavior. Sometimes that helps. But it doesn’t restore the soul. Because the trauma wasn’t just a chemical imbalance—it was a rupture in connection: to self, to others, to the divine.

From a neuromystical perspective, trauma is not a flaw—it is a freeze. A disconnection from the river of living energy that wants to move through us. Healing isn’t about fixing a broken system; it’s about thawing the ice around the inka seed—the immutable spark of divine self that trauma tried to bury, but never could extinguish.

Whether through breathwork, ritual, psychedelics, or presence, the work is the same: soften the filter, reconnect to source, and let the sacred self lead the way home.

Neuromysticism and the Return to Wholeness

Neuromysticism is the practice of bridging the sacred and the scientific—of healing the soul through the nervous system, and awakening the divine through the body. It recognizes that the brain is not the source of consciousness, but its translator. That trauma is not pathology, but disconnection. That healing is not just recovery, but revelation.

In this path, we work with the filters—those mental and neural patterns that once kept us safe, but now keep us small. Through breathwork, sound, energy medicine, and, when appropriate, sacred plant medicines, we soften the grip of the Default Mode Network. We open the gates.

And when we do—when the mind steps aside, and the filters dissolve—something ancient stirs. We remember. We return. Not to who we were before the pain, but to who we’ve always been beneath it: the inka seed, glowing and unbroken. Our spark of creation.

This is the work of healing. Not repairing a broken machine, but freeing a sacred current. Not treating symptoms, but restoring connection—to the body, to the soul, to the living field of consciousness that holds us all.

This is the medicine that transcends psychiatry and shamanism.
This is the path of neuromysticism.
This is how we come home.
To the body. To the breath. To the quiet, radiant center that never left.

Learn More

Share

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. You see what needs to be done and you get it done. You work hard and you work late. You take care of everyone else and become the work you do. People praise you but you see where you could have done better. You tell yourself it’s about standards. But it’s deeper than that. It’s about staying ahead of that clenching feeling in your gut. It’s about being able to breathe. Because there is something trailing behind you, invisible, threatening to swallow you whole.

You can’t see it directly. You sense it by its absence — the hollowness behind your brilliance, the emptiness that makes intimacy quietly unbearable, the vacancy you paper over with another achievement, another late night, another thing done well. It’s shame. Not shame for something you did. Shame you absorbed at the hands of someone else when you were too small to defend yourself. Shame you aren’t even permitted to see. You just feel restless. Driven. Never quite arrived.

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. The print is bright and glossy but it’s the negative that gives it structure. Shame is your inverse. Your silent architect. And you don’t even know it’s there.

A long time ago something happened. You were a kid and you had no good options — you couldn’t fight, couldn’t run, so your nervous system did the only thing left. It froze you. Freeze is survival. But it doesn’t feel like survival. It feels like you let it happen. That feeling — that you didn’t fight back, that you allowed something sinister — that’s where the shame took root. And then your nervous system, trying to protect you, rewired itself to shut you down in future conflict. Which produces more shame. And if you came from a family that had no room for the emotions that needed to move through you, you learned that needing to feel was also shameful. So you found the only door left open. You ran. You performed. You achieved your way out of the burning building, over and over, every day.

I’ve sat across from men like you — brilliant, capable, successful men — who have never once connected those two things. The running and the fire. They came to me exhausted, or stuck, or quietly hollowed out in ways they couldn’t name. Not broken. Frozen. There’s a difference, and it matters.

As you mature the shame doesn’t disappear, it shape-shifts into anxiety. Into the critical voice that says not enough, not yet, not quite. Into depression that isn’t really depression — it’s shame on top of shame, a wet blanket thrown over your own light. Some men drink. Some work. Some disappear into screens or distance or a carefully managed life where no one gets close enough to see the negative behind the print.

And so here you stand. Successful by every measure. Alone even when you aren’t. A shiny trophy on a dusty shelf.

But you’re reading this. Something in you recognized the door…

…Step into Balance…

Christina Allen: Neuromysticism is a reader-supported publication. While the default stress responses are to flee or fight, neither is usually an option when we are small and dependent upon our abusers for survival. Children facing violence, abuse, or violations of their boundaries—and their bodies—have but one option: to survive it. A third stress response takes over: freeze.

When the nervous system chooses freeze, it does so by overriding our will. No one wants to freeze. It’s a form of paralysis. Without will, our agency, or ability to act according to our will, collapses. Now we are at the whims of our aggressors. To make matters worse, if this happens more than once our brain rewires itself to use freeze as the default stress response in the future. We are not making choices anymore in freeze. We are surviving them. What happens in the aftermath often causes far more harm than the event itself.

There is shame. Self-recrimination. And now a trigger-happy stress response putting us back into freeze at the smallest provocation. Freeze-based trauma steals our will, our agency, our self-respect… and with it, the quality of our future. Like interest on a maxed-out credit card, its effects compound daily. Especially when it happens early in life.

Compliance

Traumatic events that have a power differential often initiate the freeze-default neuropathway in our brain. The amygdala, the part of the limbic brain tasked with anticipating danger, stands like a sentry at the gate of our awareness. It bristles with attention, always ready to activate the stress response at a moment’s notice.

This is where the secondary damage from freeze-based trauma begins. The brain decides we’ll need the freeze response often, so it dials up our sensitivity to stress and keeps the response primed. Instead of running or fighting, we find ourselves, by default, unable to champion ourselves in times of conflict. Especially when we are up against someone who is stronger than us.

After we’ve frozen a time or two, we just collapse into freeze at the first sign of confrontation. They don’t even have to be aggressive to trip the switch. A bit of posturing, or even a difference in agenda, will do. When our sense of safety is challenged, the amygdala is on the job, Johnny-ready-to-save-the-day, and we are in freeze again. Unfortunately, this gives us the appearance of compliance, making it look like we agree with an aggressor —when in fact we do not.

Overriding The Bodily Shutdown Through Fawning

We go into a mild shock in freeze. Into a kind of paralysis. And then we dissociate, leaving our bodies to the circumstances at hand. We might watch it all happen from a safe place outside ourselves—or not. But we do survive. Maybe we remember. Maybe we don’t.

And now, in addition to enduring something we never wanted, our nervous system resets itself. We become primed for instant eject. We collapse at a moment’s notice whenever conflict arises. And we begin to hate ourselves for being so weak. We no longer trust people who say they care. We don’t even trust ourselves.

The only agency we seem to wield is to fawn—to beg, to plead, to appease, to compliment them—just to avoid freezing again. Strangely, we appear compliant in an effort to avoid freezing.

Fawning, however, puts us in a double bind. We befriend our predators so we won’t be preyed upon. It gives us the illusion of control, but it sets us up for more abuse. In the end fawning only adds to the shame we carry: for not being able to stop what’s happening —for not being strong enough to execute our true intent —and for seemingly encouraging something we did not want, through our efforts to be unthreatening.

And in the wake of all this, we begin to believe it was somehow our fault. That we consented. That we invited it. That we deserved it.

Consent

When we’re unable to stand up for ourselves, it can look like we’re agreeing to what’s happening. Stillness gets mistaken for compliance. Fawning gets mistaken for invitation. The lack of resistance in dissociation gets mistaken for consent.

It’s tricky territory. We become easy targets for opportunists, bullies, and gaslighters. Not because we are weak—but because our nervous system has overridden our will. We are stuck in survival mode. We’re not saying yes. We’re trying to live.

But others don’t always see that. And until we heal, we won’t see the loop we are caught in. In the aftermath, we look back and blame ourselves. We ask: Why didn’t I leave? Why did I go back? Why didn’t I fight? Why did I smile? Why didn’t I say no?

The truth is: we were caught in a survival trance, bound to the person harming us by the very biology trying to keep us alive.

Consent requires will. Will is intent, not the path of least resistance. It is not compliance.. It is consciously choosing. When we are frozen, our will is offline and our focus is on appeasing those who will hurt us.

Think about this a second.

And consider what is happening at the collective level right now… We are all being rewired for freeze. For compliance…

The Crash

When there is no way out of this cycle we finally implode. The nervous system, still trying to save us, down regulates our engagement with the world and puts us into a depression. Or it entices us with distractions and addictions. It takes us offline. It offers a place to hide. To collapse into.

Eventually, we’ve created such a mess that we turn completely inward—traveling so far into the darkness… that the only apparent exit is through death

Healing From Freeze

Healing from freeze-based trauma is complex.

It is not just rearranging the mental furniture of the mind. Or refocusing on better behavior. It is tearing down the house, rebuilding the foundation, and upgrading the wiring. It involves a complete reorganization of the self—of the personality—alongside a restructuring of the brain and nervous system. They go hand in hand.

Ultimately, thawing from the freeze is a journey of reclamation. It is to thaw the water of who we are—so we can feel again. So we can trust our instinct, follow our intuition, and reconnect with our will. It is to restore the dials on the dashboard of our being—choice, agency, presence, direction. It is to reclaim our inner authority and sovereignty. And it begins with finding that spark of will within us, and fanning it back to life.

When we finally heal —both as individuals and as a collective— our consent comes from that spark of being. From wholeness. From the expression of a restored will…where we feel our no’s —and can act on them. And ultimately, we feel safe enough to say yes. I want this.
<p class="button-wrapper" traditions, initiations take many forms. Most are ceremonial and symbolic. Christian priests baptize parishioners with water to mark a rebirth in Christ, or offer communion through the ritual of bread and wine. In Judaism, the bar or bat mitzvah celebrates a coming of age. These are gentle rites of passage.

Thanks for reading Christina Allen: Neuromysticism! Vision quests, burials, and Sun Dances are all deeply transformational…and often traumatic. In the Andes, some paqos, or Andean priest-healers, are said to be initiated by being struck by lightning. These are the altomesayokes, those who speak directly with the Apus, the mountain spirits. They are not chosen by human teachers, but by the cosmos itself.

While most traditional initiations involve ritual, community, and a symbolic death and rebirth, trauma reaches beyond ritual into a more primal embodiment based on true survival. Because trauma operates outside the bounds of ceremony, it transforms. It is a raw, embodied initiation… into death, and into rebirth.

There are much gentler initiations passed down in the Andean healing lineages from master to student. These are energetic transmissions, often invisible but deeply felt, which link an initiate to the lineage and subtly reorder their energy field, or poq’po. This energetic reorganization aligns the initiate more fully with their divine self and helps them express that divinity through their humanity.

These energetic initiations given along the qanchispatañan, or “seven steps,” guide a paqo through deeper levels of awareness and alignment with Source. They are part of a coherent and intentional unfolding.

Lightning, however, bypasses any ceremony. It blasts straight through the poq’po and into the nervous system, shattering the old sense of self. If the person survives, they are often plunged into what is known as “lightning sickness,” a disorienting period where body and mind are scrambled. The initiate must be tenderly cared for: attuned to, entrained, and painstakingly supported through energy work and prayer. But as the old self dies off, something new is born.

As with any trauma, the nervous system is suddenly repatterned. The brain becomes more vigilant, attuned to danger, and adept at scanning the environment. In the West, we call this hypervigilance and often pathologize it. In truth, it is both a burden and a gift.

After trauma, we are forced to reevaluate who we are and how we will stay safe. Our sense of self often fragments into strategies and roles, some of which abandon authenticity for survival. We lead with defense mechanisms. We adapt. We survive.

In our culture, we treat trauma as a dysfunction to manage. We medicate it, analyze it, apply behavioral tools, talk to the parts, and use therapeutic modalities like EMDR. And while these can be helpful, we rarely ask: What is this trauma trying to teach us? How are we being initiated? What gifts lie inside this rupture?

The deeper journey is to create a new container of self strong enough to hold the gifts that trauma awakens. This is the path of the altomesayoke, the one initiated not through lineage, but through lightning. And once that lightning clears the density of the old self, the initiations of the qanchispatañan can accelerate the initiate’s perceptual awareness. It is said that if you want deep healing… go to an altomesayoke.

The initiate does not choose lightning. But they do choose what to do with it. The same is true for every trauma survivor.

We are being invited, again and again, not just to manage, but to transmute. The path of the initiate is to hone the energetic self into a highly integral vessel for Source. To become, through our suffering, a more refined instrument of the divine.

True initiation rarely comes when we are ready. More often, it comes as rupture. But trauma, when held with intention and deep presence, can become a portal, one that cracks open our ordinary sense of self and reveals capacities we didn’t know we carried. In the Andes, this is the path of the altomesayoke, but we are all invited to walk it, if we choose to listen to what the break is trying to birth.

website

Thanks for reading Christina Allen: Neuromysticism!
