Tomorrow I’m flying home to help my mom pack up the house I grew up in.

She sold it.

Even typing that feels strange.

My dad built that house. He was a builder, and he poured so much of himself into it. It’s where he and my mom raised Lindsey, Ian and me, but calling it our childhood home doesn’t really explain what that house was.

It was the house.

The one everyone came to after school. Half the time I didn’t even have to be home. My friends would stop by anyway because they knew the door was always open and my mom would feed them. We hosted a million pool parties, sleepovers, holidays and gatherings there. It was the house everyone wanted to be at, where there was seemingly no such thing as showing up at a bad time.

We lived so much life in that house.

And then there’s Dad.

My dad died there in 2019, and I think part of what makes selling the house so painful is that he still feels incredibly present in it.

There’s the worn leather sofa where you could almost always find him sitting. It probably should have been replaced years ago, but none of us wants to see it go because we can still picture him right there.

There’s his garage workshop, where you could leave practically anything that was broken, from a necklace to something I was certain was beyond repair, and somehow he could fix it. His tools are still everywhere. His surfboards and skateboards and toys. His surfboard closet. His favorite coffee mug is still in the cabinet. His completely ridiculous DVD collection that absolutely no one needs and, apparently, absolutely no one is willing to part with.

And then there’s the backyard.

That was Dad’s oasis.

He wanted stepping outside to feel like you’d been transported to a tropical island, and somehow he pulled it off. He’d take people on his special “Captain Calypso” tours through the backyard, stopping at the koi pond and eventually ending at the tiki hut.

It was ridiculous and wonderful and so completely him.

There are pieces of him everywhere you look. And maybe that’s why this doesn’t feel like simply selling a house. After losing him, it became one of the last places where we could still walk through a door and be surrounded by him.

For my mom, I know this is even harder.

She isn’t just packing boxes and moving somewhere new. She’s leaving the home where she built a life with my dad, where they raised three kids, welcomed what sometimes felt like half the neighborhood, and made decades of memories. It’s the place where she loved him, lost him, and somehow learned how to live there without him.

We all know it is time for her to sell it.

But sometimes the right thing can still break your heart.

So tomorrow, we start packing. We’ll open closets and cabinets and decide what stays and what goes. Mom will inevitably make each of us take home every yearbook, school project, varsity letter and random childhood artifact she has graciously stored for us for the past 30+ years. We’ll argue over things nobody has cared about in decades and suddenly cannot imagine throwing away. And someone will somehow end up inheriting Dad’s apocalypse preparedness collection.

We’ll take the things we can.

But there’s so much you can’t put in a box.

I know we aren’t leaving Dad behind in that house. The pool parties and Mexican dip and Captain Calypso tours and Christmas mornings belong to us, not to an address.

But some places become so woven into the story of a family that saying goodbye to them feels a little like saying goodbye to that version of your family all over again.

Maybe home was never really the house.

Maybe it was my dad building it. My mom making sure the doors were always open. And all of us filling it with so much life that leaving it was always going to hurt.

At the beginning of every school year, I like to share a reminder about after-school restraint collapse, because it can show up at any age.

We first learned about it when Caroline started Kindergarten and would come home completely drained and emotional over the tiniest things. Another mom introduced me to the concept and suddenly it all made sense: kids spend all day holding it together, following rules, navigating friendships, learning, and managing expectations. Then they get home to their safe place and finally let it all out.

For little kids, that might look like tears or meltdowns. For older kids, it can look more like irritability, snapping at everyone, shutting down, or immediately retreating to their room. Sometimes that rough after-school version of your kid is really just an exhausted kid who has been keeping it together all day.

After six years, we said goodbye to Sprinkles.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know what a queen she was. She was the most well-traveled guinea pig, joined us for many family vacations, was the star of every family Halloween costume, loved greeting our friends (and the UPS man) from the front porch, was part of many family movie nights, spent her days free-ranging around the house, bossed Mabel around, was featured in magazines, and even had her own hashtag.

She was sweet, cuddly, endlessly patient with the kids, and somehow convinced thousands of you to care about a guinea pig you’d never met.

I won’t miss cleaning her cage, but I will miss her little squeaks every time someone opens the refrigerator.

For such a tiny little pig, she lived a very big life. 🤍

3. Make one meal that stretches into two. This is when I pull out my easiest meal plan so dinner is one less thing to think about.

4. Do a full calendar download. I look at the next two weeks and add every practice, appointment, birthday, camp, and random thing I forgot about while I was gone.

5. Give myself one catch-up day. No ambitious plans. Just laundry, inboxes, groceries, and getting the house back to baseline.

Every week there’s another headline about AI replacing search, blogs dying, creators changing everything they do, and people consuming content in completely different ways.

I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t made me question what I’m building.

But then I remember...

The internet has always changed. We all left Facebook for Instagram. Then everyone said blogs were dead. Then short-form video took over. Then newsletters exploded.

Every era feels permanent while you’re living through it.

Maybe AI changes everything.

Maybe it doesn’t.

Maybe people eventually get tired of perfectly summarized answers and start craving stories, personalities, and human experiences again. I don’t know.

What I do know is I’m going to keep showing up and creating content. Because no matter how much technology changes, I still believe people crave human connection.

We’re back from Positano, and I don’t think we’ve ever had a trip quite like this one.

Italy completely lived up to the hype. Wandering through the gardens in Ravello. Lemon sorbet in Amalfi. A dreamy day on the water in Capri. Coffee overlooking Positano every morning. Daily gelato walks. The best zucchini pasta I’ve ever tasted (so good we went back a second time just so I could order it again). Somehow every day managed to top the one before it.

But what made this trip so special wasn’t just where we were.

It was how much life slowed down.

No practices to rush to. No work emails. No never-ending to-do lists.

Just us.

Wandering hand in hand with nowhere to be. Looking at each other over and over saying, “Can you believe we’re here?”

Years from now, I’ll remember the incredible places we visited.

But even more than that, I’ll remember having an entire week with Matt where the only thing on our agenda was enjoying it together.

And honestly, that’s the best souvenir we could have brought home.

It’s our last day of sixth grade and fourth grade, which means summer break starts TODAY!

Which is exciting...but also seems to trigger some sort of annual panic-cleaning response in me. For the past week, I’ve had an overwhelming urge to get my life together before summer officially begins.

Not in a New Year’s resolution kind of way. More in a “there are about to be 17 kids in and out of my house all day, every day, for the next few months” kind of way.

Suddenly, I’m tracking down all our pool towels, setting up a garage water cooler, restocking the snack drawer, buying freezer pops in bulk, and switching over to food baskets for fewer dishes when a handful of extra kids inevitably stay for dinner.

Every summer, I’m reminded of one of the many reasons we love sleepaway camp.

The kids spend two weeks completely unplugged, making memories with their friends, staying up too late, and doing all the things they wait for all year long.

And for Matt and me, it creates a rare window where we can actually sneak away together.

A little Sprinkles update…
