We, as modern independent filmmakers, are stepping into an entirely unfamiliar landscape.

For the better part of a century, the path was narrow, centralized, and understood. You scraped together financing, spent every ounce of your energy making a film, and brought the finished reel to the marketplace, hoping an acquiring distributor would buy it outright. If they did, you signed over your chain of title, gave up creative custody, and watched them handle the prints and advertising while hoping for a multi-week run in theaters.

In the past few years, we’ve watched that centralized machinery slowly breaking down. As traditional studio output contracts, streaming catalogs drown in a sea of interchangeable content, and multiplexes look for fresh ways to fill auditoriums, the old rules are just not bringing home the bacon for movie theaters that depend on a constant supply of movies to keep their seat filled. Emerging technology and hybrid pipelines now allow independent creators to achieve visual scale and cinematic world-building that once required tens of millions of dollars.

Yet, as thousands of ambitious creators rush toward the market, many find themselves unprepared for what comes after the edit is locked. They make the dangerous mistake of treating distribution as an afterthought, spending their entire budget on production, neglecting audience development, and entering meetings without the operational foundation required to do business.

To understand what exhibitors and distributors actually look for, and how independent filmmakers must prepare themselves to meet those expectations, I sat down with Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment.

Fathom has spent over two decades developing a specialized lane in event cinema. Releasing roughly 95 titles annually across more than 2,000 participating locations, their programming team evaluates over 3,000 incoming projects each year. What started as an innovative way to bring audiences into theaters during off-peak hours has expanded into a powerful model proving that curated, community-driven events can thrive where passive corporate programming stumbles.

The Reality Behind the Deal

The fundamental shift filmmakers must grasp is that distribution is no longer a passive handoff. Distributors are not waiting in an office tower to rescue a finished movie and manufacture an audience from scratch. They are looking for active, capable business partners.

“There is a whole business behind how you market, distribute, and reach audiences that is equally important to making the film,” Miller explained. “I don’t expect filmmakers necessarily to be experts in all those different areas, but it is critical that they understand what is behind them. When a contract comes across your desk, you need to understand what rights you are giving up, what you are collaborating on, and what the financial commitments really mean. People often say, ‘I made this great masterpiece.’ That’s fantastic, but now there has to be a whole other plan standing behind it to stand it up.”

That planning begins with a realistic understanding of distribution models. While traditional theatrical runs demand open-ended multi-week commitments and massive, speculative marketing budgets, event cinema operates on scarcity and precision.

“Fathom has built an alternative model where you can bring content to fans at scale without necessarily pursuing a traditional theatrical release,” Miller noted. “With a traditional release comes serious financial and operational variables: P&A spend, timing, audience guarantees, and the risk of selling your film outright and losing creative control. With event cinema, you are looking at one, two, or three focused playdates. It allows you to concentrate your promotional energy, build high urgency, and deliver an event rather than hoping people randomly stumble into a theater on a Tuesday afternoon.”

What the Filmmaker Must Deliver: Audience as Equity

When an independent creator approaches a distributor like Fathom, the conversation quickly moves beyond aesthetic ambition to a fundamental operational question: Who is the audience, and can you reach them?

Filmmakers often assume that landing a distribution partner replaces the need for self-promotion. Miller emphasized that a distributor provides the theater network, exhibitor relationships, and technical delivery infrastructure, but the filmmaker must supply the initial spark of organic demand.

“Don’t be deterred if you are catering to a niche audience,” Miller said. “If you have an audience that is passionate, they will show up. You don’t need to be in 2,500 locations to make an impact. If your goal is to connect with people, start building trust and credibility with that base early. They will evangelize on your behalf. They will bring their friends, and you create a community where people walk into that auditorium and immediately feel at home because everyone around them loves the content as much as they do.”

Miller pointed out that this relationship-driven model levels the playing field for independent creators:

“It isn’t about massive amounts of money. A band or a creator with an active, dedicated relationship with their community can post once or twice and sell out auditoriums for an event release. They didn’t need a multi-million-dollar studio ad buy because they already earned the relationship with their fan base. That fan is your North Star.”

Where Independent Capital Belongs

When independent creators do have promotional funds, they often fall into the trap of spending money on visible industry novelties, custom lobby displays, elaborate merchandise lines, and promotional gimmicks before establishing baseline demand.

Miller offered direct, practical guidance on where indie capital actually moves the needle.

“People see the over-the-top specialty popcorn buckets and elaborate merchandise for major legacy brands, but many of those items simply do not sell unless you already have a massive, established brand and a large fan base,” Miller cautioned. “If you are a filmmaker with limited capital and you are asking where your money is best placed, targeted digital advertising and generating quality earned media through PR are key.”

Miller advised creators to invest in strategic reach that directly converts into ticket sales:

“Partnering with exhibitors to hit known ticket buyers of comparable films, audiences who already showed up for similar genre titles, is far more effective. Finding the authentic voices and influencers who carry genuine authority within your specific niche community will serve you as a creator far longer than bells and whistles.”

Protecting the Window: Theatrical as an Engine

Another critical responsibility for filmmakers entering the market is respecting the commercial needs of theater exhibitors. If a creator wants a theater owner to dedicate valuable screen time, electricity, and staff to their project, the theatrical release must be treated with priority.

“If you are pursuing a theatrical release, you have to protect your theatrical window,” Miller explained. “Exhibition is taking an investment in their auditorium, and they want to know that their content partner is making the theatrical release their number one priority. If you announce that your film is dropping on streaming a week later, you are only cannibalizing your own demand.”

Protecting that theatrical window does not, however, mean ignoring home viewing; rather, it sets up a powerful downstream ripple effect. Miller shared data illustrating how a focused theatrical event directly fuels subsequent digital and VOD success.

“People often evaluate whether they should go theatrical or streaming, and the answer shouldn’t be either/or. It should be both,” Miller emphasized. “The highest consumers of content want the theatrical experience, and they want to watch at home. But the larger-than-life communal experience on the big screen drives awareness that pays off downstream. When Fathom brought Coraline back to theaters in August 2024, it had previously been sitting quietly on Amazon Prime. Within the first week of our theatrical run, it became a Top 10 most-purchased film on Prime Video. Theatrical and streaming worked in concert, not against each other.”

Building for the Long Haul

Entering the distribution landscape requires understanding that a professional reputation is built over time, across multiple projects. Distributors evaluate the professionalism of the creator just as much as the footage on screen.

Fathom’s programming team continues to rely on human curation, reviewing thousands of submissions without automated filters, looking for authentic storytelling, clean deliverables, and creators who understand the realities of the marketplace.

“We don’t look at our relationships as ‘one and done,’” Miller concluded. “Whether we’re collaborating with longtime studio partners like Laika or working with independent creators, it comes down to who is in the trenches with you. It’s about transparency, sharing best practices, and figuring out how to elevate what your content is without compromising your creative identity. If you are excited about your work, don’t give up, and don’t doubt yourself. Make sure you find partners who do justice to what you’ve created.”

For the independent filmmaker, the message is clear: mastering your production tradecraft is only step one. When you take equal responsibility for understanding the business, protecting your audience relationships, and approaching distributors with operational discipline, you can earn your seat at the table.

Building the digital workflow has been the hardest part, but for the best possible reasons. Every time I think I’ve got my pipeline locked in, a new animation or compositing model drops, and I have to download it, test it, and rework our process. The bright side? Once established, this pipeline makes producing and animating a full-scale sci-fi epic vastly more efficient and repeatable for whatever movies or shows Doug and I decide to build down the line. The downside? It demands days of testing and reorganizing every time a new tool lands. Overall, it’s worth it, but keeping up with the relentless pace of the tech feels never-ending.

There are incredible models out there right now, some impressive beyond belief. But as a guy with ADHD, I have to make tough choices to preserve the distinct visual style of Escape From Planet Omega-12 and avoid falling into the “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) trap. The most alluring promise of these new models is their perpetual tease of hyper-realism and ease-of-use. Both usually fall short of the hype, even if each new iteration inches closer to the mark.

On top of that, every commercial tool comes with heavy tradeoffs: strange licensing agreements, skyrocketing compute costs, or aggressive censorship. For instance, the new Minimax model is wildly good and damn near perfect when it comes to photorealism, but it’s mired in corporate lawfare and draconian Terms of Service hoops if you want to use its outputs commercially. Other top-tier video models cost around $8 a generation, making them a total non-starter for a production like ours.

So, for now, I’m sticking primarily with open-source models like WAN and LTX-Video, paired with subscriptions to Gemini, Kling, and Grok for specific pipeline tasks. I know that using cloud subscription tools isn’t strictly the “100% local compute” Gospel I usually preach, but I’d be a fool to turn down affordable tools that help me hit my deadlines today. As local models continue to evolve, and I know they will, I’ll wean myself off the cloud entirely.

Let’s also remember: I don’t share the same copyright anxieties that plague most pure “AI filmmakers.” Why? Because our script was written from scratch by Doug and me with zero AI assistance. All our creature and character designs started as physical drawings, sculptures, and kitbashes crafted in my shop. I hand-drew the storyboards. Many of our environments are physical miniature builds, shot with practical alien puppets, and blended with performance-capture data I filmed with actors myself. Our character voices are also real live actors. Our scenes aren’t simply “generated”; they are meticulously layered VFX composites built by a team of generous friends (like Chris Young, who provided the 3D animation added to the video below) and myself.

It’s a mountain of work, but the visual language holds together because I’m not chasing photorealism. I’m not trying to win “Best AI Film.” I’m making the best animated sci-fi movie I can; a sexy, profound, pulp adventure told in a style no one has ever seen before.

That is my singular focus for the rest of this year. There have been welcome distractions along the way; writing articles, giving talks, panel discussions, all great for spreading the word. But now the testing phase is rounding the corner. We’re actively talking with distribution channels and toy manufacturers while locking in the final cast and animation team.

Am I confident? Yes. No. I’m terrified.

My ambitions put me through the wringer every single time because I refuse to stop until I fulfill them. The expectations I set are ridiculous, but they are necessary, not just for the movie, but for me. When I said I’d make The Quantum Terror, people called me crazy. I had “friends” scream at me and tell me to give up because their brains broke at the thought of an indie filmmaker actually pulling it off.

I didn’t listen. I won. And I’m going to win again.

Once Omega-12 crosses the finish line, I won’t just have a movie. I’ll have a self-sustained studio pipeline where we can repeat this process as many times as we see fit.

God help me.

That is exactly why the system is scrambling to put us back on the plantation.

If you haven’t been following the drama, here’s the short version: early reviewers noticed telltale AI artifacts in a couple of animated sequences, a 1920s rubber-hose cartoon used to hypnotize kids, and an origin flashback for the film’s villain. When pressed on it, Roth initially claimed he sat down and hand-drew the frames himself because of his animation background. Then the credits rolled, revealing an AI VFX vendor named Dark Half. Twenty-four hours later, Roth issued a classic Hollywood backpedal, claiming he “misspoke,” and that AI was only used for a “very small portion” to help bring his vision to life. If you know anything about AI assists, it’s probable that Roth did draw key-frames for it, and then had AI handle the heavy lifting of finished animation… or maybe he didn’t. My feeling is, “Who cares?”

Well, naturally, the anti-AI crowd crash-outs on social media erupted, as they always do. Smelling blood in the water, the accused Roth of “stealing,” and declared the movie a moral failure before most people even had a chance to buy a ticket.

As an independent filmmaker who builds practical miniatures, sculpts monster puppets, and runs local AI diffusion models directly on my own hardware, I watched this entire PR circus unfold with a mix of frustration and utter exhaustion.

The problem with Ice Cream Man isn’t that Eli Roth used generative AI. I’m glad he did. He had a viability gap to fill, which, if you don’t know that term, I’ve written about before.

The problem is that he was terrified to admit it, and by lying, backpedaling, and apologizing, he handed the anti-tech pitchfork mob the exact conditions for victory they needed.

The Myth of the “Easy Button”

Let’s dismantle the biggest lie circulating in the film industry right now: the idea that incorporating AI into a visual pipeline is an “easy button” used exclusively by untalented hacks who don’t know how to make real art.

I draw. I paint. I construct physical sets in my shop, and I shoot practical special effects. I don’t use AI because I can’t do the work; I use it as an artistic forklift. When you are an independent creator trying to put studio-level scale, world-building, and visual ambition onto a screen without a $100 million corporate blank check, you use every single tool available to punch above your weight class.

If you need an unsettling, uncanny, dream-logic 1920s animation sequence that feels fundamentally off-kilter, blending hand-drawn keyframes with generative diffusion models is a brilliant, creative use of hybrid technology, good at adding that wonderfully weird feeling to a moment. It allows a mid-budget or indie film to achieve a specific stylistic texture that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive.

Using a power tool doesn’t make you a bad carpenter. But sitting there with sawdust on your shirt while swearing to a reporter that you cut every log with a hand-saw makes you look like a liar with something to hide, when you shouldn’t have had to hide anything in the first place.

The Cowardice of the Hollywood Backpedal

Eli Roth’s mistake wasn’t his means of making a movie; it was his press strategy.

He tried to play both sides of the fence. He wanted the speed, efficiency, and visual flair of generative tools in post-production, but he wanted the pure, artisanal “hand-crafted traditionalist” clout during his press junkets. He was terrified of the immediate online backlash, so he told a half-truth, got caught by his own end-credits, and then scrambled to issue a corporate-approved apology.

The moment you apologize to a mob, you validate their outrage. You signal to the world that there is something inherently dirty, unethical, or shameful about your creative process. You give them the authority to judge your legitimacy as an artist based on the software in your stack rather than the final image on the screen.

If you are going to use neural generation, ControlNets, or hybrid digital-practical workflows in your movie, own it.

Stand on the stage, look the audience in the eye, and explain the exact pipeline. Show them how the prompt, the keyframes, the local models, and the practical elements merged to create the shot. When you speak with total technical confidence and complete pipeline transparency, you strip the critics of their primary weapon: the thrill of “exposing” you. And let’s face it, they were never going to be on your side, or do a damn thing for your movie in the first place. They were looking for someone to destroy before they ever heard of you. They’re bottom feeders looking for clout they could never earn on their own, so they use anger to try and take yours.

What They Are Actually Scared Of

Let’s take that apart and look at it for a minute.

For decades, the studio system held a complete monopoly on scale. If an independent director had a wild, ambitious sci-fi or horror vision, they were forced to crawl on their knees to corporate boards, beg for development funds, and trade away their creative control just to get their movie made.

Local compute, open-source models, and hybrid AI workflows break that leverage permanently. When an independent creator can sit at a custom workstation, combine practical effects with local open-weight visual generators, and output a film that looks like it cost $50 million for a fraction of the price, the gatekeepers lose their power. They can no longer dictate who gets to build big worlds and who gets relegated to two people talking in a kitchen, and it drives these people crazy, because that’s the world they wanted us all to live in, where in their minds, they would get absurd amounts of money to be adored, shout orders on set, and walk flashy red carpets, while we forever sat on the sidelines with our quaint little indie films.

That is what the anti-tech mob is actually terrified of: creative sovereignty.

I love the tactile history of cinema. I love practical gore, rubber monsters, and physical sets. I still plan on using them, where it counts the most. But I refuse to pretend that technology stops being legitimate the second it makes a studio executive or a self-important guild lackey redundant.

Eli Roth had a chance to stand up for modern, hybrid indie filmmaking. Instead, he hid behind a press release and let the mob dictate the terms of his own art.

To every independent filmmaker watching this mess: don’t let anyone make you feel like you need to be ashamed for your toolbox. Master your gear, build on your own iron, tell the truth about your process (or at the very least don’t feel like you owe anyone an explanation), and put the best damn story you can on the screen. The audience doesn’t care about the internet’s hall monitors; they just want to see something great, and that’s where the paying field truly levels, because when everyone has the ability to put the exact same level of quality on screen, the only thing that can tip the scales is a killer story. That’s something they haven’t been able to create in ages, and they know that you can.

To be clear: I am a lifelong, unabashed lover of the Evil Dead franchise. I’m an independent filmmaker, a husband, and a father. I don’t mind the gore, the blood and tissue, or the unrelenting meanness of the Deadites. That is baked into the DNA of Sam Raimi’s sandbox. The Kandarian Demon isn’t supposed to be misunderstood or sympathetic; it is a force of unholy, chaotic malice. You go into an Evil Dead movie expecting to watch human bodies get put through a meat grinder.

What I didn’t expect from Evil Dead Burn was a script that hijacked the visceral thrill of body horror to subliminally pass along a shallow, resentful sermon against the foundational value of a loving family.

The Straw-Man Pipeline

From the opening act, the narrative goes out of its way to gaslight the audience into scorning the very concept of a devoted husband and a close-knit generational family. Oh, and yes, there will be spoilers here, although the plot’s climax is the exact same formula as the last two movies.

Consider how the film constructs its central domestic conflict. Normal, relatable marital frictions- a husband wanting to have children, expressing concern over his wife smoking for the sake of her health and their future child’s well-being, or being upset when she deliberately and publicly undermines him, before kissing his brother on the mouth- are not presented with dramatic nuance. Instead, these baseline human desires are grafted directly onto the most cartoonish, heavy-handed straw-man of a drunk, abusive husband humanly possible.

The film doesn’t explore the tragedy of a broken home; it manufactures a villain so absurdly unredeemable that the audience is forced to applaud his destruction.

When the husband inevitably perishes in a horrifically violent car crash, his widow shows up to his funeral wearing a casual hoodie, absent her wedding ring, and completely unprepared to offer a single word of solace to his grieving relatives. Yet, through the film’s ideological lens, we, the audience, are instructed to view his grieving family as the toxic antagonists simply for being hurt and bewildered by her coldness.

It doesn’t stop there. The grieving mother is turned into another straw-woman of perpetual bitterness and foolish choices. Her core motivations? She wants her family to be united, longs for her mother not to be ravaged by dementia (a heartbreaking reality countless real-world families, including my own, endure), and wishes her father hadn’t abandoned them. In a healthy narrative, these are deeply empathetic, human longings. In Evil Dead Burn, the screenplay treats these desires as inherently foolish, selfish, and deserving of violent subversion.

The film relentlessly takes potshots at the idea of a cohesive, generational unit, culminating in the lead protagonist screaming, “F your family!” before savagely carving up a demon-possessed family member.

Misunderstanding the Evil

As a storyteller, what frustrates me most about this thesis is how completely it fails its own genre logic.

If “F your family”* were the mantra uttered by the demons, the movie would actually work. Demons are supposed to be antithetical to God, light, grace, and human connection. Demonic possession in classic horror works precisely because the evil entity seeks to corrupt and tear apart the sacred bond of the family unit, making the human struggle to protect that bond heroic.

Instead, Evil Dead Burn flips the script in the worst way possible: the destruction of the family isn’t the tragedy orchestrated by the demons; it is the heroic catharsis of the protagonist. The movie frames a woman doing battle with everything her family stands for as an act of personal liberation.

The film uses the cover of an iconic horror brand to deliver a message to me and my daughter: that wanting a strong, supportive, generational family is inherently toxic, abusive, and claustrophobic all the way down.

The Cost of Cynicism in Storytelling

There are technically impressive cinematic elements in Evil Dead Burn. The practical effects carry weight, and the CGI isn’t too overused; the sound design is punishing, and the set pieces hit their marks. But all of that craft is hollowed out because the filmmakers prioritized a cynical, resentful worldview over real narrative truth.

We are living in an era of storytelling where many writers and directors treat personal cynicism not as a flaw to be overcome by their characters, but as a badge of intellectual superiority. They isolate their characters, sever their generational ties, and glorify detachment, while delighting in graphically killing beloved family pets and children. And we wonder why audiences leave the theater to rejoin the population feeling alienated, exhausted, and sad. The antidepressant epidemic shouldn’t be a mystery to anyone, yet so many don’t see it, because these movies are so good at covertly slipping it on, while we’re only looking for the next gross-out or jump-scare.

Real horror requires empathy, that word so many use as a cudgel, but so few practice. For a scare to hit, you have to care about what is being threatened. When a movie treats the human family as an institution that deserves to be dismantled rather than protected, the violence ceases to be scary; it just becomes ugly.

I love horror because it has the power to test the human spirit against the darkest forces in the universe. But as a father watching the genre I love with the daughter I cherish, who wants her to see the value and joy of having children, of being a part of a generational family that loves and supports one another, I refuse to accept the premise that the real monster in the room is a family trying to hold itself together.

Prologue: 2:30 AM and the Long Flight West

My alarm went off at 2:30 AM on Thursday. By 3:30, I was in an Uber rolling through the pitch-black Central Texas night toward Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

My driver was a great guy, and as soon as he heard I was heading to San Diego Comic-Con, his eyes lit up. He’d always wanted to go. We spent the thirty-minute ride talking about his love of Dragon Ball and Attack on Titan, sharing that pure, unpretentious enthusiasm for stories that pull you out of everyday life. It was an immediate, grounding reminder of what this culture actually means to real people before you step into the corporate machinery designed to monetize it.

Then came the Alaska Airlines flight.

If you’ve ever tried to catch up on sleep in a cramped coach seat while running on fumes, you know the specific flavor of slow torture I’m talking about. I was exhausted, the seats were brutal, and by the time my boots hit the tarmac in San Diego, I wanted to run screaming out of the jetway. It took me a good twenty minutes just to unpack the knots in my neck and back.

But San Diego greeted me with bright sunshine, cool ocean air, and my mom, a resident of the town, waiting at the curb.

We drove straight down to the harbor for breakfast burritos by the water. My grandmother, her mother, had passed away only a week prior, so sitting there in the quiet morning light, just the two of us eating breakfast by the harbor, was a moment of peace, serenity, and reflection on what really matters. We were both just grateful to be together at a time when we emotionally needed it most, sharing a quiet, grounding meal before stepping into the convention madness.

Act I: Ghosts of Artist Alley and the Floor in Zombie Mode

Navigating the San Diego Convention Center after twelve years away is an exercise in sensory overload, especially when operating on three hours of sleep.

My first challenge was just figuring out where to pick up my program participant badge. As I stood there staring at the floor map like a confused tourist, a woman named Tracy noticed my hesitation and helped steer me in the right direction. It turned out Tracy was in town assisting voice actress Erica Fett (I think that’s who it was, anyway), who was set to appear on Sara Frazetta’s Frazetta’s Fiercest Females panel later that weekend alongside legendary pin-up artist Olivia De Berardinis. Having known and interviewed Sara (the granddaughter of pulp cover artist and legend Frank Frazetta) previously, hearing her name right out of the gate was a cool, unexpected tie-in. Comic-Con has a strange way of dropping those small-world connections into your lap before you even cross the threshold.

Badge secured, I stepped out onto the show floor in full zombie mode.

The last time I attended Comic-Con was back in 2012, and my first visits stretch back to 1995 or 1996. Walking those aisles today is a jarring reminder of how drastically the landscape has shifted. Thirty years ago, Comic-Con was a sanctuary for craft. You could stand at a table in Artist Alley and have an unhurried, genuine conversation with the titans of the comic book medium, giants like Dave Gibbons, John Higgins, Eddie Campbell, and Dave McKean. You talked about line work, narrative rhythm, and ink. Today, much of that old guard has been priced out or pushed to the margins to make room for giant corporate activations, streaming tents, and endless lines for plastic consumer clutter.

Still, if you look closely enough, the heart of the medium is still beating in the quiet corners.

I wandered over to the Alex Ross Art booth and ran into Ross’s manager Sal Abbinanti. Years ago, when I was first trying to figure out how to make movies, Sal was generous enough to let me interview him and gave me crucial early encouragement. I walked up, shook his hand, thanked him for believing in me back when I had nothing to show for it, and handed him a physical copy of my first feature, The Quantum Terror. He was genuinely thrilled to see it. Running on fumes as I was, I forgot to ask for a photo with him, but that full-circle moment meant more to me than any studio photo-op ever could.

From there, I swung by the Big Man Comics booth (Booth 1705), the staging ground where Chris Gore and Alan Ng would later be signing Film Threat gear. While checking out their setup, I introduced myself to writer Mike Baron, the legendary creator behind Nexus and The Badger. Mike happens to be good friends with my close collaborator Val Mayerik (who illustrated some of the classic Badger runs), so we spent a few minutes catching up, and I picked up a copy of his newest book.

I kept moving, trying to stay ahead of the fog in my brain. I stopped by Billy Tucci’s Crusade Comics booth to pick up a copy of Shi. I chatted with his wife, Deborah, who was incredibly welcoming, but Billy was coming and going, slammed with fans, so I told her I’d loop back later. In the sheer madness of the afternoon, I completely forgot to make that second trip, a mistake I’m still kicking myself for, especially given the upcoming Shi action figure collaboration with Frazetta Girls.

I missed a few other favorites, too, including Sara herself and Ashley Wood, but the artists holding down Ashley’s Underverse booth were world-class talents in their own right, and we spent a good twenty minutes swapping contacts and talking shop.

By early afternoon, the tank was bone-dry. The noise of the floor was turning into white noise, and I knew I was done. My mom picked me up at the harbor curb, and I collapsed onto her couch, sleeping soundly until dinner.

After a quiet meal with my mom, my brother, and her boyfriend, I crashed onto an air mattress and slept like a rock. The brutal flight was behind me, the floor was scouted, and when Friday morning broke, I was awake, clear-headed, and ready for the panel.

Act II: The Merchant’s Eye, The Digital Circus, and The Aisle Blockade

Friday morning brought a fresh start. Fully rested and fueled by good coffee and breakfast, I walked down to the harbor toward the convention center. San Diego’s waterfront is stunning in the morning light, though the view carries a heavy, unmistakable shadow, the stark crisis of homelessness left to proliferate across the downtown area. Seeing that human struggle, right outside the glittering doors of a multi-million-dollar pop-culture cathedral, is a sobering reality check, one that speaks volumes in regard to how ignorant California is of its own ecosystem.

Once inside, I took my time exploring the floor with a clear head. I chatted with cosplayers about their builds, always fascinated by the obsession, time, and craftsmanship people pour into creating something purely for the joy of it. I browsed through original comic art pages, admiring the raw line work that started it all.

A major focus of my floor walk was scouting the licensed toy and collectible booths. Merchandising is at the top of my mind for my upcoming sci-fi movie, Escape From Planet Omega-12. Ever since George Lucas built his independent empire by keeping the licensing rights to Star Wars in 1977, I’ve understood that physical goods aren’t just extra revenue; they are the lifeblood of creative independence.

You can see that exact playbook being executed today by outfits like Glitch Productions with The Amazing Digital Circus. When I saw The Last Act in a packed theater, the entire crowd pulled out their phones as the credits rolled to scan the screen’s QR code and order plushies and vinyl figures while still in a heightened emotional state. That direct-to-consumer merchandising engine generated massive revenue that rivaled, and likely eclipsed, their theatrical box office. If you want to build a sustainable micro-empire outside the studio system, collectibles are non-negotiable.

With the afternoon approaching, I headed upstairs to scout Room 24ABC early. The San Diego Convention Center is vast, and navigating the dense currents of moving crowds requires getting your bearings ahead of time. After confirming the room location, I had a little time to spare and headed back down to the main hall.

That’s when I ran straight into the physical manifestation of Hollywood’s anti-AI crusade.

I walked past a booth where Guillermo del Toro was holding court, surrounded by a wall of people holding up phones to record him, completely choking the aisle. Looking at him standing there blocking the flow of traffic, a thought flashed in my head: “Hey Guillermo, I’m an independent filmmaker fulfilling my dream of making a sci-fi epic without Hollywood, using AI as part of my work pipeline, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve appreciated a lot of his earlier work as mid-tier, wannabe Tim Burton-style dark fantasy that had heart. But it’s rich watching a multi-millionaire director, who takes massive streaming checks from Netflix to re-tread comfortable public-domain IP like Pinocchio and Frankenstein, turn around and fire shots at independent creators trying new tools, and then play the victim like some third-world terrorist state lobbing rockets at his neighbors. He lectures from a high castle while acting like those making their own opportunities are somehow the soulless ones who should be stamped out.

It reminded me of Christopher Nolan, another studio favorite who loves to preach about the “purity” of the medium from behind an IMAX camera. This is a guy whose most iconic, memorable cinematic beats are lifted almost frame-for-frame from directors far more innovative than himself: Satoshi Kon’s psychological dream logic (Paprika, Perfect Blue), Michael Mann’s clinical heist mechanics (Heat), and Alex Proyas’s gothic, shifting architecture (Dark City, The Crow).

Seeing the legacy gatekeepers literally blocking the hallways of Comic-Con was all the motivation I needed. I turned around and headed back up to Room 24ABC.

Act III: Room 24ABC and the Real Reason We Build

I got to the room early and hung out in the hallway, talking with more cosplayers while the crowd began to gather. Before long, the rest of the panel arrived: Chris Gore, Joseph Kahn, April Wright, Jim Agnew, and Alan Ng. Chris got us organized quickly, and we took the stage in front of a nearly full room.

The panel was a blast. While the legacy industry spends its time panicking over changing models, our table offered practical, battle-tested advice on bypassing gatekeepers entirely. We spoke directly about how terrified the gatekeepers are, how now is the time to bypass them, with me adding the use of open-source software, local AI models, and hybrid practical-digital pipelines to close the “viability gap,” proving that an independent creator working out of a garage can now deliver cinematic scale without taking a studio leash.

The true impact of the trip, however, happened after the microphones were turned off.

When the panel ended, a group of five or six men approached me outside Room 24ABC. We stood in that hallway for forty minutes, where I talked about what is possible with these new tools, while they shared what they were hoping to create. I encouraged them to scan my QR code so they could follow my process on Substack and reach out directly if they ever had questions along the way.

Among them was a gentleman on prosthetic legs. He explained that due to his physical disability, being on a traditional, grueling 14-hour physical film set was nearly impossible for him. But with local AI tools, performance capture, and digital pipelines, those physical barriers are mostly dissolved. For the first time in his life, with the introduction of this software, he was realizing that he didn’t have to abandon his dream of directing his own feature film. He had the power to sit in his office and build his vision directly.

That single conversation validated every single article I’ve written, and every hour I’ve spent testing open-source workflows.

This isn’t about “saving money” or “replacing jobs.” It’s about human agency. The legacy gatekeepers want you to believe that art only belongs to those who can secure a ten-million-dollar budget and survive a brutal physical studio machine. But for that director on prosthetic legs, and for thousands of independent builders like him, open-source consumer technology is a gift of accessibility, giving creators back their voice.

Act IV: The Hangover, The Void, and The Micro-Empire Ahead

After the hallway conversation wrapped up outside Room 24ABC, I headed back down to the convention floor to check in at the Big Man Comics booth. Chris Gore and Alan Ng were hard at work signing merch for Film Threat fans, and the energy around the table was great. I had a chance to catch up with YouTuber “Press M to Start” and a few other creators standing nearby, and I made sure to thank Chris and Alan again for putting the panel together and bringing me into the fold.

A little later, I ran into a friend who was running his own booth on the floor, and he ended up introducing me to two toy developers. We talked shop about what was possible for an indie creator like me, as I showed them my binder full of designs for characters, robots, and aliens, adding another crucial piece to the puzzle for how I’m going to roll out the physical line for Escape From Planet Omega-12.

I spent my final hour on the floor doing some quick shopping for my family, grabbing gifts to bring back to Texas while soaking in the sheer volume of art, collectibles, and passion crammed into every square foot of the hall. Before I knew it, it was time to meet my ride.

The next morning, I was back at San Diego International Airport for my flight home to Austin. Sitting in the terminal, I was already kicking myself for leaving without making that second stop at Billy Tucci’s booth to grab his new Shi book, but overall, the trip had been a massive success.

Yet, stepping back into my quiet office in Texas that afternoon, I was hit by a very specific, heavy psychological reality: the post-convention void.

It’s an odd, quiet emptiness that almost every creator feels after an event like Comic-Con, even when things go amazingly well. One minute you’re inside a high-voltage pressure cooker of pure possibility, standing on a stage, speaking to a nearly full room, and connecting with people whose lives might be touched by the possibilities your words offer them, and less than twenty-four hours later, the noise completely stops.

You’re back at your desk. The room is dead silent, your body is still recovering from airplane seats, and you’re scrolling through social media, seeing all the things you missed or the opportunities you didn’t quite have time to chase. It’s easy to let that sudden contrast feel like a letdown, like you walked away leaving money on the table.

But the truth is, that void isn’t a sign of failure; it’s just the friction of stepping out of the arena and back into the workshop.

The high of the stage is fleeting, but the work is permanent. San Diego Comic-Con proved that the hunger for true creative independence is real. The artists, the fans, and the people who realized they can finally direct their movie. They don’t need a blessing from the studios. They need proof that an independent builder can carve out a path, own their IP, and deliver something extraordinary using the power of consumer tech, open-source software, and sheer force of will.

Now, the heavy lifting begins. I have a film to finish, toys to manufacture, articles to write, and a micro-empire to build right from my desk in Texas.

No gatekeepers. No permission slips. Just the work. Let’s get to it.

The Big News: Escape From Planet Omega-12

I couldn’t be more excited to share what I’ve been building. The official trailer for my upcoming animated sci-fi feature, Escape From Planet Omega-12, is here on this Substack for subscribers, and it will hit YouTube shortly after.

This project is the culmination of everything I stand for: marrying traditional practical effects, hand-built miniatures, and physical puppets with the power of consumer technology, open-source tools, and local AI workflows. It’s scale and vision that used to require a $50 million studio budget, built right on my own desk, and Guillermo del Toro can’t do a damn thing about it.

A few weeks ago, at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the deeply disturbing ritual that we’ve all become all too familiar with played out. Hisko Hulsing, a legendary director whose jaw-dropping, hand-painted textures on projects like Undone have spent years anchoring the vanguard of animation craft, premiered his new independent short film, Danse Macabre. True to its name, the film is a sweeping, visceral piece of art featuring haunting, apocalyptic imagery of skeletons dancing and riding through the frame, over landscapes of war and horror.

To achieve this haunting aesthetic, Hulsing treated machine learning as a natural extension of his classic mixed-media roots. He and his team spent months hand-crafting physical oil paintings and building precise 3D animation tracks, using a local model trained entirely on his own physical artwork to seamlessly marry fluid digital motion with the tangible, textured grit of his painterly brushstrokes. Far from bypassing the craft, the technology was integrated as a hyper-sophisticated compositor to execute a vision that would have been impossible through traditional means alone. It was a flawless, highly disciplined evolution of his lifelong visual vocabulary. I applaud it.

The response from a vocal contingent of the festival crowd wasn’t up for an artistic debate. They came prepared for an ideological execution without wanting to bother to know what actually went into its creation. Before the film even projected its first frame onto the screen, a hyper-coordinated mob wearing matching “Stop Generative AI” stickers staged a mass walkout. Those who remained started loudly booing and heckling the screen, screaming that a master painter should be “ashamed” of his own labor. They weren’t the audience. They were zealots who made sure they filled the seats so they could manufacture a reaction ahead of any possible real response from a true audience.

It was a textbook modern internet pile-on brought into the physical world; a synchronized performance of pure, unadulterated malice. And when you step back to look at the big picture of what is happening across our culture right now, the common thread becomes blindingly obvious: these people are the worst of the brainwashed, completely indoctrinated to view the entire universe through the exhausting, sterile lens of a permanent power struggle.

The Entitlement of the Non-Builder

To this hyper-conformist mob, there is no such thing as an individual locking themselves in a dark room for ten hours a day out of obsessive, unadulterated love for a craft. They cannot comprehend a human being who is so passionately consumed by a creative vision that they are willing to make an extension of themselves and their relationship with the muse with whatever tool sits on their desk, be it a photocopy machine in 1993, a green screen in 2010, or a localized neural network today, just to see their dream exist in physical reality.

They cannot comprehend earned status through labor and love, because they are fundamentally lazy. The best they can do is imitate it, adding a sprinkle of hipster pretension and an unhealthy heap of power-hungry propaganda, but even then, when it works, they’ll eventually find a reason to turn on the ones who start to stand out.

Because they lack the discipline to build, their only recourse to achieving social currency and a synthetic sense of security is the exercise of raw, destructive power. They view the creative hierarchy not as something to be earned through compounding interest of labor, but as something to be taken by force, threat, and relentless public harassment. They want to sit like unelected, absolute monarchs in the comments sections and festival rows, dictating who is allowed to create and who isn’t, enforcing a supremely narrow, focus-grouped vision of the world. Their “romantic” relationships must be a hell of paranoia and ridicule. Their children must feel hopeless.

My feelings of contempt for their limited vision and cowardice know no bounds. I wish I didn’t mean that, but it’s true.

And the ultimate irony? They carry out this mass bullying utilizing the exact platforms, networks, and computing architectures that greater minds built for them.

1960s master of the guitar Jimi Hendrix precisely diagnosed this spiritual warfare decades ago with a single, eternal truth:

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

The mob has zero interest in the power of love. They are entirely consumed by the love of power. They don’t look for nuance, they don’t look for context, and they don’t look for the human heart behind the canvas. They purposely avoid it, ducking, going around, looking the other way so they can pretend that it doesn’t exist, and only see an individual who has been freed by something like AI, stepping outside their approved matrix. They perceive that individual’s independence as a direct, lethal threat to the structural security they have encased their worthless little egos within. A sovereign creator who answers only to the muse proves that the mob’s collective rules are completely meaningless, and so they will destroy anything and everything they cannot control just to maintain the illusion that they are running the market.

The Sovereign Rejection

This power-obsessed entitlement has made Hollywood look completely irrelevant. I know I’ve said this before, but I am done. I have zero desire to join their clubs, compete with their legacy systems, or seek permission from them. True artists, from Claude Monet painting his light fields to independent directors carving out universes in their garages, succeed because they are driven by an uncompromised passion that has nothing to do with the approval of an ideological cartel.

We do not dig into these new mediums to show off technological tricks or to pick fights over software. We dig to uncover the human soul. My visual vocabulary is a weapon used to fight for the preservation of our collective relationships, to build stories that champion deep friendship, the renegotiation of broken trust, and the absolute necessity of keeping the door open for redemption. They see these things as weakness. When they boo, it’s because your value in contrast to their malevolent worthlessness offends them, and it’s easier for them to destroy you than do anything of value themselves.

The tragedy of the Annecy protest isn’t just that a crowd of useful idiots yelled at a master painter; it’s that their obsession with hating a tool—simply because they let someone else do their thinking for them (like a dictator) and that person told them to hate it—completely blinded them to the content of the film, which was an anti-war allegory warning against the rise of authoritarianism. They became the very monsters the film was warning them about, entirely unaware of their own hypocrisy.

If you are a creator standing on the modern frontier, the lesson of the Danse Macabre disruption is clear: stop walking on eggshells for a conformist mass that forgot how to build. When they stand up to demand you apologize for your tools, they aren’t trying to de-legitimize your methods, they are trying to de-legitimize you, because they are terrified of what you can accomplish without them.

Do not apologize, do not acquiesce to their brain-dead talking points and bogus concerns, and do not play their power games. Master your craft, protect your sovereignty, and let the love of your vision drown out their desperate, dying noise.dates, algorithms, or computers. I find it horrifying. It sometimes puts me on the edge of crashing out entirely.

They are entitled brats who refuse to do the heavy, agonizing, everyday internal work required to build an infrastructure, a movie set, or a personal visual dialect from scratch. They best they can do is imitate it, adding a sprinkle of hipster pretension, and an unhealthy heap of power hungry propaganda, but even then, when it works they’ll eventually find a reason to turn on the ones who start to stand out.

Because they lack the discipline to build, their only recourse to achieving social currency and a synthetic sense of security is the exercise of raw, destructive power. They view the creative hierarchy not as something to be earned through compounding interest of labor, but as something to be taken by force, threat, and relentless public harassment. They want to sit like unelected, absolute monarchs in the comments sections and festival rows, dictating who is allowed to create and who isn’t, enforcing a supremely narrow, focus-focused vision of the world. Their “romantic” relationships must be a hell of paranoia and ridicule. Their children must feel hopeless.

My feelings of contempt for their limited vision and cowardice knows no bounds. I wish I didn’t mean that, but it’s true.

And the ultimate irony? They carry out this mass bullying utilizing the exact platforms, networks, and computing architectures that greater minds built for them.

1960’s mast of the guitar Jimi Hendrix precisely diagnosed this spiritual warfare decades ago with a single, eternal truth:

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

The mob has zero interest in the power of love. They are entirely consumed by the love of power. They don’t look for nuance, they don’t look for context, and they don’t look for the human heart behind the canvas. The purposely avoid it, ducking, going around, looking the other way so they can pretend that it doesn’t exist, and only see an individual who has been freed by something like AI, stepping outside their approved matrix, and they perceive that individual’s independence as a direct, lethal threat to the structural security they have encased their worthless little egos within. A sovereign creator who answers only to the muse proves that the mob’s collective rules are completely meaningless, and so will destroy anything and everything they cannot control just to maintain the illusion that they are running the market.

The Sovereign Rejection

This power-obsessed entitlement has made Hollywood look completely irrelevant. I know I’ve said this before, but I am done. I have zero desire to join their clubs, compete with their legacy systems, or seek permission from them. True artists, from Claude Monet painting his light fields to independent directors carving out universes in their garages, succeed because they are driven by an uncompromised passion that has nothing to do with the approval of an ideological cartel.

We do not dig into these new mediums to show off technological tricks or to pick fights over software. We dig to uncover the human soul. My visual vocabulary is a weapon used to fight for the preservation of our collective relationships, to build stories that champion deep friendship, the renegotiation of broken trust, and the absolute necessity of keeping the door open for redemption. They see these things as weakness. When they boo, it’s because your value in contrast to their malevolent worthlessness offends them, and it’s easier for them to destroy you than do anything of value themselves.

The tragedy of the Annecy protest isn’t just that a crowd of useful idiots yelled at a master painter; it’s that their obsession with hating a tool, simply because they let someone else do their thinking for them (like a dictator) and that person told them to hate it, completely blinded them to the content of the film, which was an anti-war allegory warning against the rise of authoritarianism. They became the very monsters the film was warning them about, entirely unaware of their own hypocrisy.

If you are a creator standing on the modern frontier, the lesson of the Danse Macabre disruption is clear: stop walking on eggshells for a conformist mass that forgot how to build. When they stand up to demand you apologize for your tools, they aren’t trying to de-legitimize your methods, they are trying to de-legitimize you, because they are terrified of what you can accomplish without them.

Do not apologize, do not acquiesce to their brain dead talking points and bogus concerns, and do not play their power games. Master your craft, protect your sovereignty, and let the love of your vision drown out their desperate, dying noise.

Yet, cracking that software was notoriously easy. Key generators and patched files flooded the internet, and the tech giants did almost nothing to structurally stop it on a consumer level.

Why? Because it was a brilliant, predatory marketing strategy called “strategic tolerance.”

The logic was simple: make sure the entire world gets addicted to your specific visual vocabulary, your keyboard shortcuts, and your file formats. Bill Gates openly admitted to this playbook regarding overseas markets in 1998, famously stating: *“As long as they’re going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They’ll get sort of addicted, and then we’ll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.”*

Adobe ran the exact same play. They let an entire generation grow up mastering their ecosystem for free. But the second those self-taught creators entered the professional market or founded independent agencies, the trap closed. A legitimate business cannot risk a copyright audit. Suddenly, employers had to buy thousands of dollars in corporate licenses because their workforce didn’t know how to use anything else.

And once total market capture was achieved? Adobe killed off perpetual physical licenses entirely, rolled out the Creative Cloud, and trapped the entire creative class in a permanent subscription rental property. Gotchia bitch.

Remember kids, a mouse trap catches the mouse by offering it something for free. It turns out that comparison those old people were always making was right.

This historical context is the skeleton key to understanding the mass hysteria dominating our cultural timeline today.

The Architecture of Regulatory Capture

If you look at the current landscape, the hyper-coordinated “AI is a moral copyright violation” panic and the heavy AstroTurfing of the anti-data center movement are not noble, grass-roots defenses of human artistry or the environment. They are classic, textbook examples of regulatory capture orchestrated by corporate conglomerates desperate to protect their rental empires.

In the old days, breaking a tech semi-monopoly required massive, multi-million-dollar capital investments that only another centralized mega-corporation could afford. But open-source AI fundamentally alters the math. It democratizes the most expensive commodity in modern business: highly specialized engineering and digital labor.

For the first time in history, an independent filmmaker, a zine publisher, or a garage visual effects artist doesn’t have to choose between paying a corporate subscription tax or resorting to software piracy. They can simply download a powerful open-source base model, start vibe coding, train it locally on their own hardware using their own specific visual dialect, and own their digital infrastructure from day one.

You aren’t just opting out of a software ecosystem; you are escaping the consumer plantation entirely. And that terrifies the monopolies.

When a corporation can no longer compete on the objective merit of its product, it stops trying to build a better tool and starts building a higher legal wall. They deploy emotional, surface-level arguments to trick well-meaning, short-sighted people into begging the government for regulation.

The Intellectual Property Moat

By funding and amplifying the narrative that the mere act of computational training is an inherent copyright infringement, tech incumbents are trying to engineer a legal landscape where only companies with billions of dollars can afford the licensing fees to run or train models.

If the courts or state legislatures pass laws criminalizing decentralized model training without corporate-level licensing agreements, the solo creator working out of a garage is instantly outlawed. It creates a synthetic barrier to entry, ensuring you are forced to buy your tools from an authorized corporate gatekeeper.

The Eco-Panic Smokescreen

The sudden, frantic uproar over data center water usage and energy consumption follows the exact same script. While localized infrastructure management is a real logistical conversation, the extreme “Doomer” protests blocking development are heavily manufactured.

By manipulating public anxiety through carefully and prolifically placed propaganda, they turn eager virtue signalers into unpaid muscle (better known as useful idiots), demanding severe compliance penalties and federal sandboxes for computing infrastructure, they ensure that raw processing power remains a luxury restricted entirely to institutional incumbents.

The Illusion of “Safety”

It is a beautiful, deeply cynical trick. They get the crowd to carry the water for them, shouting slogans about “protecting the artists” or “saving the planet,” entirely blind to the fact that they are helping a centralized elite pull up the ladder behind them. I frankly find it amazing how good these oligarchs are at getting people to continually advocate against their own interests, fully willing to get violent and/or throw their own lives away, in favor of these corporations, while unironically believing that they’re anti-establishment. Really, the people who keep falling for this should feel embarrassed.

Let’s be entirely clear about the outcome of this corporate-led regulatory push: these laws will not stop the multi-billion-dollar studios or the tech monopolies from utilizing advanced AI. It will just stop YOU from using it.

They want to codify a permanent digital caste system where a handful of corporate conglomerates own the rendering machines, and the rest of us are relegated to being perpetual, cattle-like consumers, paying a monthly rental fee just for the privilege of expressing our own imaginations.

Do you remember when the World Economic Forum said, “You will own nothing, and be happy.”? Yeah, this is what they meant, and they’re good at getting us to help them, if we don’t pay careful attention.

The anti-AI doomers love to pretend they are fighting a righteous war against the cold machine, but they are looking at the landscape all wrong. A machine is a neutral piece of iron and code. The real enemy is the same old, boring corporate vanity that has been trying to corral human expression into centralized, focus-grouped tollbooths for a hundred years.

This isn’t a technological debate; it’s a war for individual sovereignty. We do not need corporate guilds, executive committees, or heavily funded hall monitors dictating the boundaries of what a free individual is allowed to build on their own desk. While there will always be new ways that they’ll try to corral us into some new company store, for now, the frontier is wide open, the open-source community is thriving, and the tools are officially ours. Refuse to be tricked into begging for your own chains. Master the tools, protect your creative privacy, and keep building your own kingdoms.

For a project born entirely on YouTube through Glitch Productions, these aren’t just good numbers for a web cartoon; this is a high-velocity blockbuster opening that puts modern Hollywood’s bloated, risk-averse studio system to absolute shame. It is an undeniable triumph for creator-led, permissionless art.

But now that the opening weekend dust has settled, we need to talk about what actually happened inside those theaters, and boy this is going to be tough to write. I have literally shed tears over this.

Since I walked out of that screening, the film has completely refused to leave my mind. It has done what so few modern, corporate-manufactured movies can do: it left me deeply moved, profoundly troubled, and thinking intensely about the raw psychological current running beneath the surface. It is a heartbreaking piece of work on multiple levels, capturing a genuine sense of generational grief that resonates with millions of viewers.

The Amazing Digital Circus is an absolute masterpiece of modern independent animation. It is a crucial, historic node in the greater cultural map of our times that will be studied and dissected for decades to come. Its creator, Gooseworx, is a brilliant, singular talent operating in full, unhindered communication with the subconscious muse.

Yet, precisely because it is a masterpiece, it demands a level of rigorous, mature psychological evaluation that goes deeper than standard internet praise. When an artist taps directly into the collective unconscious, they often bring back profound, universal truths that they themselves may not consciously realize they are projecting. And underneath the dazzling, retro-digital imagery of The Last Act, there is a quiet, destabilizing undercurrent of ideas being affirmed to a young audience that we desperately need to talk about.

To understand the psychological architecture of the Circus, we have to look past the superficial pixels and view it through a Jungian lens. Carl Jung mapped the human psyche as a delicate balance between the Ego, the Shadow, and the Persona, the psychological mask we construct to navigate, survive, and present ourselves to the external world.

In the Circus, the characters aren’t merely trapped in a digital prison; they are trapped inside extreme, irreversible caricatures of a persona. When characters like Pomni or Jax assume their avatars, they are locked inside a constructed identity completely severed from objective, physical reality. They are forced to perform, to smile, and to mask their deep internal alienation behind an artificial veneer of digital whimsy.

This brings us to the toughest, most necessary conversation of our cultural moment. It is a matter of objective biography that Gooseworx began life as a biological male, and when you look at the central, horrifying mechanic of the series, the concept of “Abstracting,” it is almost impossible not to recognize a powerful, subconscious allegory for the modern crisis of transgender identity and the fracturing of the self.

“Abstracting” occurs when a character completely loses their grip on reality, collapsing under the psychological weight of their environment until they morph into a chaotic, violent, glitching mass of black voids and screaming eyeballs. It is a devastatingly accurate representation of the mental health crises, the deep-seated distress, and the tragic, self-destructive tendencies that plague individuals navigating radical transitions.

Today’s hyper-individualistic culture feeds Gen Z the preconceived notion that if they simply change their outward mask, if they construct a completely new gender persona from scratch, they will instantly achieve the peace, validation, and happiness they crave. But reality tells a heartbreakingly different story. A constructed persona cannot rewrite objective biology. When the artificial mask inevitably clashes with the unyielding truth of physical reality, the internal world of the individual collapses into a state of total warfare.

This is a psychological trap I understand intimately from my own youth. In the 1990s, I was deeply embedded in the alternative goth and punk scenes. We wore black lipstick, painted our faces, and built elaborate, counter-cultural personas to shield ourselves from a world we felt alienated by. We genuinely believed we were finding our “true selves” by pushing the boundaries of societal expectations, and you know what? It was pretty damn cool. I still love goth culture and a lot of what comes with it. When I see young goths carrying on the tradition, it makes me happy.

But looking back from the threshold of fifty, with the benefit of decades of lived consequence, I see the truth clearly: much of indulging in a performance came at the expense of our actual, grounding reality. We were often too dependent on a stylized mask to run away from our real potential and the hard work of building actual resilience. (A personal journey that heavily informs the themes of my own upcoming creative works).

Modern therapeutic culture attempts to heal this generational fracturing with a shallow, bumper-sticker slogan: “You are perfect just the way you are, just love yourself.” We see this exact idea play out on the surface of the Circus when Zooble tells Gangle that she should just love every part of herself exactly as she is.

It sounds beautiful, but it is an incredibly dangerous sedative that leads directly to the stagnation of the soul. We are not perfect just the way we are. We all require deep, agonizing, conscious spiritual work. Gangle’s profound fragility, her complete inability to handle the slightest testing of her “metal,” her immediate collapse into a weeping, broken mess, is a massive flaw that prevents her from growing.

When you tell a young person that their weaknesses are flawless, you trap them in their own dysfunction. True self-respect isn’t about blind, uncritical self-love; it is about respecting your own latent potential enough to hold yourself to a standard, accept the reality of who you are, and do the brutal, everyday work required to build strength. If you strip away the requirement for self-improvement, you strip away hope itself.

This lack of hope leads directly to the isolation traps that dictate Gen Z’s worldview. Modern ideological gatekeepers frequently try to sway the minds of young people by systematically alienating them from their parents, framing family anchors as suspicious or outright hostile. When The Last Act portrays Ragatha cleanly cutting ties with her mother as an empowering, unalloyed good, it plays right into this tragic cultural script.

Family bonds are not immaterial; they are tied directly to our foundational reality. While family dynamics can be deeply strained and painful, the adult response is not permanent abandonment. True maturity involves erecting firm boundaries, letting the emotional fires cool, and allowing time to alter the landscape so that trust can eventually be renegotiated and rebuilt into something healthy. By celebrating total estrangement, the modern narrative robs young people of the chance to ever repair their anchors, leaving them entirely untethered and easily manipulated by outside forces.

Perhaps the most devastating casualty of this psychological landscape is Jax. On the surface, the audience is conditioned to view him as a purely “toxic” masculine bully who loathes Gangle for her fragility, affirming the idea that anyone who challenges your weakness is inherently hateful. But Jax is a far more tragic figure. He is someone who desperately wanted to be strong, but feared that showing even a shred of vulnerability would erode his armor.

He closed himself off because he had to survive a primary maternal figure who weaponized his openness against him, demonstrating the silent, crushing danger of the “toxic feminine.” Jax hardened his heart because he looked at Gangle’s unanchored, weeping collapses and realized that dropping your guard in a hostile world means instant destruction. I do not blame Jax for his attitude; his cruelty was the only shield that kept him tethered to a sense of personal agency for as long as he lasted. His belief that he had committed so deeply to his destructive persona that he could never be forgiven is the ultimate heartbreak of the film. From that perspective, I congratulate the the episode on addressing the men’s mental health epidemic, that still goes widely ignored, if not mocked.

Let me be unequivocally clear: I do not see Gooseworx’s storytelling as predatory or malicious. He is a brilliant artist using his canvas to work through the profound, subconscious fractures of his own life, his identity journey, and the systemic alienation of his generation. The fact that I don’t see eye to eye with him philosophy doesn’t mean I see him as a bad person, and this critique is not a judgment on his worth as a human being, his staggering talent, or his monumental success. We probably would have got along great at the old clubs and if we ever meet, I hope a big hug from me will be accepted.

The feelings Gen Z has about a broken world don’t come from nowhere, nor do the cautions that older generations hold regarding the lifelong consequences of identity experimentation. If we want these two generations to stop treating each other as mortal enemies across an ideological divide, we have to start leaving the door unlocked.

We have to build a culture where individuals who have wandered down paths of radical transition, destructive personal choices, anger, resentment, or subcultural isolation realize that no mistake is permanent. There has to be a path back to objective truth, back to reconciling with biology that can admittedly be difficult to wrestle with when you’re young, and back to community grace without facing absolute destruction or abandonment. Jax believed there was no coming back from what he had committed to, and it cost him everything. It didn’t have to be that way. God, when they dragged Pomni back, I wanted him to still be in her arms.

The Amazing Digital Circus has given us a masterpiece that accurately mirrors the tragedy of our times. Now, it is up to us to do the real work; to reject the lie of effortless perfection, respect the reality of who we are, and ensure that no matter how deep someone wanders into the digital circus, the door to help them find their way home remains wide open.

Micro-budget horror is eating the top five’s lunch, and alternative distribution models are pulling blockbuster numbers for niche properties. The definitive exclamation point on this shift arrived when Glitch Productions’ The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act (which I have covered extensively) shattered estimates by pulling in over $36 million globally over its opening weekend. It is an undeniable, historic triumph for creator-led, independent art.

But as I walked out of that theater, past the packed rows of a younger generation completely moved by what they had just witnessed and scanning the end credit’s QR code for merch, I didn’t find myself thinking about the box office metrics. I found myself thinking about the tools we use to tell our stories, and how easily the culture forgets its own history.

Seeing Glitch scale this project to the silver screen reminded me of the late 80s and early 90s, back when computer-generated imagery (CGI) first began creeping onto the scene. Back then, digital tools were widely decried as the ultimate, soul-killing “enemy” of the craft, a sterile mechanical threat prophesied to eradicate human talent and ruin the medium forever. Yet, decades later, those very same digital tools have been completely democratized. The creators at Glitch not only embraced CGI; they took a relatively simple, low-poly 3D aesthetic, a style that the mainstream industry never really took all that seriously, and used it to tell a profound, deeply personal story that is now doing historic numbers. Hollywood could never have predicted it, because they’ve lost the imagination to even consider the possibility of something outside of their scope.

It is a beautiful cycle, but it stands in stark contrast to a dangerous misunderstanding taking root in our modern cultural discourse.

Today, we are watching a literal rerun of that exact same technological panic. The second a modern filmmaker integrates an LLM, a diffusion model, or other machine learning into their pipeline, the utopians and the anti-AI crowd unite in a shared, short-sighted reflex to slap a reductive label on them: “AI Filmmaker.” (Also see: AI Broes, AI Slop, etc.) Just as before, the software is treated as a threat to the art, rather than an extension of it.

I am not an AI filmmaker. I am a filmmaker who uses AI.

And it is worth noting here: Glitch and many of the creators leading this theatrical charge are explicitly not on board with generative AI tools. They view them with deep suspicion. And you know what? That is completely okay. Because their stance, and my stance, isn’t actually the point. The debate over the means and media is a distraction from the real work of excavation.

The distinction isn’t semantic; it’s a fundamental definition of craft. For thirty years, I have operated as a mixed-media artist, working in everything from publishing, VFX, and showing at galleries, treating every new tool not as a medium unto itself, but as a brand-new type of lens to be incorporated into a much larger, highly personal visual dialect.

In his seminal book Understanding Comics, author and theorist (and former neighbor of mine) Scott McCloud laid bare a foundational rule of graphic storytelling: a medium’s visual vocabulary, its deliberate choice of lines, shapes, and iconic abstraction, is not just a passive container for the narrative. The vocabulary is the story. When an artist understands this, the tool never dictates the aesthetic boundaries; the artist’s intent bends the tool to fit their unique psychological universe.

My own visual vocabulary hasn’t been a straight line. It has evolved through four distinct, tactile eras, each building on the last to handle increasingly complex human landscapes:

The journey began in the 1990s underground zine culture. This was an era of raw, cut-and-paste DIY philosophy. My work relied on the beautiful physical friction of ink comics, photocopy textures, and layering physical textiles onto the glass of a Xerox bed. Materials like delicate lace, fishnets, and meticulously placed Zip-A-Tone sheets, which were those classic dry-transfer shading screens used before digital gradients existed, were chosen precisely because of how they would render under the harsh, scanning light of a copy machine. It was a visual vocabulary built to express isolation and construct an aesthetic armor for a counter-cultural generation. It was pretty damn cool and as someone who still loves goth culture, I intend to revisit those methods very soon.

From the copy bed, I moved onto cold pressed art boards, pushing into a deeply organic, physical form of painting. I began mixing coffee into watercolor washes, trying to emulate artists like Alex Ross and David Mack, layering acrylics and charcoal, and pouring thick coats of clear resin to permanently seal found objects collected on hikes: shells, bones, dried bugs, and even sun-dried animals that had died naturally in the wild, trying to also emulate artists like Dave MacKean and H.R. Giger. It was an admittedly morbid palette to some, but it was driven by an intense preservationist instinct: a desire to capture real, physical remnants of life and freeze them inside a frame to protect them from disappearing. (A personal journey that heavily informs the themes of my own upcoming creative works).

Then came the digital frontier. Entering the independent film space, I discovered Adobe platforms like Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere. But rather than abandoning the physical, I used the software to composite all those things I was already working with from the tangible world together. This was an era of green screens, puppets, and extensive, forced-perspective miniature set building.

This philosophy was fully realized when I collaborated with Emmy-winning actor Bill Oberst Jr. on his acclaimed one-man stage production bringing the words of science fiction author Ray Bradbury to life. Instead of relying on sterile, flat digital backdrops, we built a physical, forced-perspective tabletop jungle using real branches and a hand-painted sheet lit by halogen bulbs to ground Bradbury’s sci-fi world in tangible reality. The computer was simply a compositor for human hands, and a place where details could be refined or added that I otherwise could never do. That exact practical-meets-digital philosophy became the bedrock of my freelance VFX career, ultimately culminating in the subterranean, Lovecraftian world of my ‘Award This’ winning feature, The Quantum Terror, which led to me getting to write for you here on Film Threat.

Which brings us back to the present day: the AI era.

My current work utilizing advanced neural rendering pipelines is not a departure from the previous three eras. It is the ultimate, long-sought synthesis of them. For decades, I have wanted to tell sprawling, animated stories, uncensored and raw, but was limited by the hyper-prohibitive financial and technical walls of traditional animation studios. The biggest trap of the indie filmmaker is that while people will applaud your ability to do amazing things on a budget, they still see it as cheap, which will forever be reflected in your returns. It’s a ghetto of praise. Subjugation by the illusion of artistic integrity.

The current machine learning array is simply a new compositor. It can, for example, take live-action video-to-video performance capture, real, highly specific human theatrical choices, facial micro-expressions, and emotional vulnerabilities, and allows me to map them cleanly onto vivid, highly stylized characters. It is the fulfillment of my preservationist instinct. The machine isn’t generating the art; my hand-guided, thirty-year curation of texture, framing, and human performance is driving the machine.

This is exactly why The Amazing Digital Circus can be recognized as a masterpiece even if one disagrees with its surface philosophy or its creators’ views on technology. I have literally shed tears over this project because Gooseworx managed to achieve a historic cinematic feat by understanding (whether aware of it or not) the McCloud principle flawlessly.

On a purely technical level, the series utilizes a deceptively simple, low-poly early-3D CGI aesthetic. But because the creator understands visual vocabulary, that specific simplicity becomes a devastatingly effective conductor for feelings of alienation and deep psychological angst. The blocky geometry, flat textures, and saturated colors evoke the suffocating nostalgia of 90s edutainment software, creating a perfect aesthetic mirror for the internal entrapment and identity crises of the characters, digging deep into a simple medium to tell a universal story that speaks to an entire generation’s unaddressed desperation.

Every storyteller on the modern frontier needs to understand this, regardless of which side of the tech aisle they stand on. You cannot let the technology define your value. The “human moat” as I call it, the unique, multi-disciplinary soul of the artist, is the only thing that separates enduring cinema from disposable digital noise.

We do not dig into these mediums for the sake of showing off the technology or fighting over software updates. We dig to uncover the human heart. My visual vocabulary is not a celebration of algorithms; it is a lifelong weapon used to fight for the preservation of our collective souls.

I use these tools to build stories that encourage people to form stronger, more resilient bonds in their real-world relationships. I use them to craft narratives about the endurance of deep friendship, the renegotiation of broken trust, the beauty of profound, romantic connections, and the absolute necessity of keeping the door open for forgiveness and redemption.

Master those tools, expand your visual vocabulary, and never forget that the real magic only happens when the machine is forced to submit to the human soul. That’s you. Now, go tell your story.

For years, I have written columns analyzing the shifting tectonic plates of the entertainment industry. I have dissected the rotting corpse of the studio system, analyzed the psychological traps of creative ego, and documented the corporate-mandated struggle sessions that police the boundaries of the digital frontier. But as I stand on the precipice of turning 50, looking at a landscape fractured by automated panic and artificial gatekeeping, a profound clarity has taken hold.

I no longer care to argue. I am not here to convince the skeptical, appease the purists, or debate the philosophical boundaries of what “art” is with people who have never bled for a frame in their lives. Life is too short to sit in a room full of bureaucrats, checking the wind to see which way the cultural hall monitors are marching.

Let’s establish the boundary immediately: Mainstream Hollywood and I no longer have anything to do with each other.

I am not trying to join them. I am not trying to compete with them. I am not looking to pitch a script to a risk-averse committee, audition for a development green-light, or sign a restrictive guild contract that treats my imagination like corporate property. The legacy studio apparatus is a zombie system, copy-pasting dead intellectual property until the ink runs dry, entirely blind to its own creative irrelevance.

To the vocal doomers, the institutional gatekeepers, and the online mobs currently enjoying the blood sport of cancel culture: Keep your bloody distance. If your creative identity is dependent on policing how other individuals build their worlds, we are not speaking the same language. If you believe that human expression must conform to rigid, traditional labor metrics or certified guild approval to be deemed “authentic,” you are worshiping a golden calf in a crumbling temple. I am not playing your game, I am not operating by your rules, and I will never apologize to a committee for navigating the frontier on my own terms.

Like Claude Monet walking out on the elite Paris Salon of 1874 to set up a raw, unvarnished exhibition in a photography studio, I am stepping out of the building. The gates only matter if you are begging to be let inside the pasture. Once you realize the fence is an illusion, you just walk away.

The Manifesto of the Polymath

The Moonlight Method is not a technology tracking roadmap; it is an architecture of absolute sovereignty. It is designed for the independent polymath, the creator who refuses to be corralled into a single, specialized lane by a corporate pipeline.

• We Sovereigns Do Not Ask “Please.” The traditional filmmaking pipeline was engineered to make you dependent on middle-men, focus groups, and investor capital. The moment you adopt a localized, closed-loop technical stack—where neural networks, performance capture, and practical craft live on your own hardware, the permission machine dies.

• The Medium is a Colleague, Not a Dictator. We do not use technology as a shortcut to bypass human wisdom; we use it as an artistic forklift. The tool’s purpose is to handle the thousands of hours of manual digital rendering and administrative bloat so that the human antenna can remain focused entirely on high-level direction, universal archetypes, and raw storytelling vocabulary.

• We Honor the Tactile and the Digital. True independence is hybrid. It is building physical miniatures in a Texas garage, scanning them into a virtual workspace using volumetric AI tracking, and layering in performance capture to achieve massive visual scale without studio-mandated budgets. It is the marriage of raw grit and high-frequency calculation.

• The Market is Horizontal. We do not chase the mass-market illusion or the VOD streaming graveyard. We treat the edit as a fluid asset and build direct-to-consumer forts through boutique physical media, independent zines, and grass-roots theatrical exhibition. Taste travels horizontally through communities, not top-down from executive offices.

The Sovereign Invitation

To the creators who are currently holding back; the animators, directors, and writers who see the staggering potential of these new tools but are paralyzing their own evolution out of a profound fear of cancel culture: Drop the weight. The mobs do not own the canvas. They do not own the tools sitting on your desk, and they certainly do not own your destiny. The only way out of a toxic, dependent relationship with an industry that forgot how to entertain is to stop looking back at it for validation.

I am turning 50, and I have never felt more creatively alive. I am intent on doing my own thing, running my own multi-imprint studio, and speaking directly to an audience that is starving for raw, uncompromised, unapologetic human storytelling.

The guy who famously bypassed traditional publishing by posting The Martian as a free serial on his personal blog found himself on a media tour for the film adaptation of Project Hail Mary. During a casual podcast interview, Weir uttered a basic, unfiltered truth that every lifelong fan has been whispering for years: modern corporate Star Trek is garbage. He even added a bit of self-deprecating humor about his own past history with the studio franchise.

The reaction from the establishment hall monitors was instantaneous. Out came the pearl-clutching social media posts from legacy writers demanding acts of contrition under the guise of “professionalism” and “guild solidarity.” Within days, the pressure boiled over. The response wasn’t a debate; it was a public execution. The industry echo chamber swarmed him with mass backlash, nasty comments, and intense ideological policing. Most telling of all was the immediate invocation of his former mentor and executive producer, Guillermo del Toro, a staunch, vocal critic of AI who has famously likened the output of generative tools to “sharting” at a party. (I don’t doubt he’s done that himself.) The message between the lines was unmistakable: Look what you’ve done to your master’s house. Get back on the plantation. Within forty-eight hours, the immense public pressure shattered the project. Gutierrez issued a desperate public apology, axed his own series, and promised to “do better moving forward” just to survive the onslaught. It was heartbreaking to witness and I genuinely feel for the man. I hope he changes his mind and reclaims his project.

This isn’t a new phenomenon but rather a historical blueprint of the industry. Hollywood has never been an open paradise of free speech; from the union blocks of the 1930s to the blacklists of the 1950s, it has always operated like a tight, ideologically policed cartel. The industry uses public acts of contrition to ensure that creators remain locked inside a toxic, dependent relationship with the studio system.

The establishment loves nothing more than to make an outsider bend the knee, parading their apology through the press like a trophy to warn anyone else thinking of stepping out of line. Yet, you will notice a glaring double standard: you will never see a studio executive or a guild president issue an open letter apologizing to We The Audience for running beloved, decades-old franchises completely through the mud.

The tragedy of this modern blood sport is the unseen toll it takes on the independent community. Right now, there are countless talented filmmakers, animators, and writers who see the massive potential of integrating AI into their workflows. They know these tools can dramatically boost their production value, allowing a home studio to render cinematic visuals that can compete with $100 million studio budgets. But they are actively holding back, paralyzing their own careers, for no other reason than a profound fear of cancel culture.

It is a silent, creeping sabotage. The doomers want you to believe that their panic is a noble defense of the “artistic soul,” but that is a convenient fiction. It is pure, desperate cope from a bloated, centralized monopoly that has completely lost its grip on the cultural imagination. They are terrified of a decentralized market where creators no longer need their funding, their distribution, or their permission slips.

The lesson of this frontier is that once you are standing on your own terms, you do not owe a zombie industry an explanation for noticing that their empire is rotting. When you choose to type a prompt, hand-craft a miniature, or write an independent script, you are taking your destiny into your own hands. If the establishment demands you apologize for stepping outside their walls, you don’t bow down, and you don’t take your context back. You throw it right back in their face.

Once you realize that the tools on your desk mean you never have to say “please” to a corporate committee again, the gatekeepers lose all of their power. They know it, and that’s why they’re running scared. Stop walking on eggshells for the sake of an industry that forgot how to entertain, and start building your own kingdoms.

Then Nirvana’s second studio album Nevermind hit the shelves in the fall of 1991.

To say it was a paradigm shift is an understatement. Nevermind was a cultural earthquake that completely shattered the music industry’s established rules. Overnight, the stadium-sized smoke and mirrors looked completely ridiculous in the face of grunge rock. Kids didn’t want polished, over-produced, hyper-managed corporate products anymore. They started thrift shopping, grabbing pawn-shop guitars, and finding raw, unapologetic, visceral truth in crowded garage shows and dimly lit coffee shops. The gatekeepers didn’t see it coming because they were too busy admiring their own reflection in the studio mirrors.

Welcome to 2026. We are living through the exact same revolution, but this time, the stage isn’t a Seattle club; it’s a movie theater canvas being torn away by a new generation of filmmakers.

Autopsy of a Corpse

Mainstream Hollywood is a walking corpse. Its infrastructure is rotting from the inside out, hollowed out by a sterile, hyper-monetized, risk-averse machine run entirely by corporate committees, focus groups, and defensive egos. It is an ecosystem that copy-pastes dead intellectual property until the well runs dry, treating audiences like predictable data points while actively choking out any inkling of original thought.

The younger generation, Gen Z and the digital natives behind them, simply do not care about big-budget studio fare. They have completely walked away from the prefab pop-culture bubble. And rather than stepping up to look at its own creative bankruptcy, the legacy system has turned into a literal zombie; festering, rotting, and trying to “eat the brains” of the independent creators who are actually keeping the medium alive.

When a studio insider tries to break ranks and use the new frontier of technology to disrupt things, the zombie industry deploys its ultimate defense mechanism: the public struggle session.

Look no further than what just happened to director Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life). Amazon launched its GenAI Creators’ Fund, and Gutierrez attempted to step onto the new frontier to fast-track an independent project called Punky Duck. The moment he did, the establishment hall monitors swarmed. They subjected a seasoned creator to an online public lashing, (ironically led by “Temu Tim Burton” Guillermo del Toro) manufacturing enough mass backlash and pressure to force Gutierrez to publicly apologize, drop his project, and bend the knee to the guild-enforced status quo.

It is pure, desperate cope. The legacy gatekeepers know they have lost the audience, so they police their boundaries with pure intimidation, demanding that creators remain on the corporate plantation.

The Garage Bands of the Big Screen

But while the legacy studios are busy holding ideological trials for their own workforce, the new wave of garage-band auteurs is bypassing the gatekeepers completely. The underground isn’t begging for permission anymore; it’s seizing physical multiplexes.

What makes this shift truly terrifying for Hollywood is that none of these breakout hits relied on studio backing or massive budgets. They are succeeding on pure, raw craftsmanship:

• The Terrifier Series: Damien Leone proved that uncompromised, unapologetic, micro-budget practical effects could build a global cult phenomenon and hijack the box office entirely through grass-roots word of mouth.

• The Amazing Digital Circus: Born from an independent, creator-led animation studio (Glitch Productions), this viral internet phenomenon completely blindsided traditional distributors. It managed to bypass studio gatekeepers entirely, surging into a massive, multi-million dollar global rollout across over 2,000 physical screens.

• Iron Lung: Self-financed, produced, and distributed by YouTube native Markiplier, proving that a single digital-native creator can mobilize an iron-clad community straight into brick-and-mortar cinema seats.

• The Backrooms: Engineered by Kane Parsons, who taught himself visual effects via online tutorials in middle school, bypassing film school entirely to direct a feature-length A24 psychological masterpiece alongside Oscar-caliber talent at just 19 years old.

• Obsession: Written, directed, and edited by 26-year-old creator Curry Barker. Shot in less than a month on a shoestring budget of under $1 million, this masterclass in spatial tension and psychological horror has barreled past $100 million worldwide, pulling the younger demographic to the multiplex in droves.

With my own upcoming animated sci-fi feature, Escape From Planet Omega-12, I am throwing my hybrid hat squarely into this exact same ring. By layering high-intensity performance capture, handcrafted practical effects miniatures, and targeted AI tools, independent filmmakers are discovering how to achieve massive visual fidelity without the studio-mandated bloat. I know this will make me a target if I’m successful, but why should I care? They never cared about anything we did before, accept to step on us when we did something before they did. The zombies can choke on craft service brain rot.

Reclaiming the Canvas

The anti-AI doomers scream that new technology is a threat to the artistic soul, but they aren’t looking at the big picture. They are hyper-focused on AI as a scapegoat, using it to blame all of their problems on, when in reality, a machine is the least of their worries. Hollywood was already brain-dead and creatively bankrupt long before the first neural network was wired up.

The garage band revolution was already happening with digital cameras, home VFX and editing, miniatures, and sheer determination. But once independent creators fully integrate AI into this mix, it will be the definitive kill shot that takes out the zombie once and for all.

AI isn’t here to replace the soul of storytelling; it is a propellant that gives the independent polymath the scale, agility, and speed to run a home studio like a major production house. It cuts out the need for a hundred corporate middle-men, focus groups, and permission slips.

Hollywood can continue to hold its struggle sessions and cry about the future until they are blue in the face. They can stay in their crumbling temples, worshipping their flow chart-driven golden calves. The underground has stopped listening. We have our own kingdoms to build, and the garage bands are already playing.

But let’s be entirely honest with ourselves: Hollywood cemented its own creative doom years before a single AI data center ever went online.

The modern studio pipeline has long since evolved into a sterile, hyper-monetized, risk-averse machine run by committees, focus groups, and executive egos. It’s an ecosystem that copy-pastes intellectual property until the ink runs dry, treating audiences like cattle-like consumers while choking out original voices. The current industry-wide panic isn’t actually a noble defense of the “artistic soul” it is pure cope from a bloated legacy system that has lost its grip on the cultural imagination, desperately blaming new technology because it doesn’t want to pay the piper for its own bankrupt choices.

The real threat to the creative soul isn’t the technology we use; it’s our own inflated human vanity. To understand how an artist truly loses the muse, you have to look at what happens when a creator achieves the ultimate industry dream: absolute, uncompromised control.

The Trap of Pristine Intent

In 2008, I as a comic book fan got a copy of the Deluxe Edition of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s legendary 1988 graphic novel, The Killing Joke. I vividly remembered the visceral shock of reading that book for the first time, the toxic, suffocating atmosphere of the Joker’s madness. But when I opened the new anniversary edition, the wind was completely knocked out of my sails. It looked clean. It looked pristine.

And it was completely dead.

For the reissue, Bolland had used modern digital technology to completely recolor the book, stripping away John Higgins’ original 1988 colors. Bolland had always detested the original coloring, viewing it as a crude compromise forced by the primitive printing tech of the late ‘80s. Armed with modern software and high-gloss paper, he could finally show the world his exact, conscious intent.

He gave us realistic grey brick walls, natural flesh tones, and smooth, perfect digital gradients. In doing so, he accidentally proved a terrifying rule about the creative process: the moment an artist eliminates the natural friction of their medium, the magic vanishes.

To understand why the reissue failed, you have to look at the limitations Higgins was weaponizing in 1988. Comics were printed on cheap, porous newsprint using a restricted palette of 64 colors. The inks would bleed into the paper, turning everything muddy. Higgins didn’t fight the garbage paper; he surrendered to it. Because he couldn’t get photorealistic gradients, he used garish, clashing, expressionistic flat blocks of color. He drenched the panels in sickening lime greens, bruised magentas, and unnatural, psychedelic oranges. The colors didn’t tell you what the world looked like; they told you how madness felt. It was its own storytelling vocabulary born out of the paper it was printed on. Taking that away after the fact is like taking a fresh water fish and placing it the ocean, and then wondering why it goes belly up.

When Bolland “fixed” it with digital perfection on glossy waxed paper, he dragged the story out of the collective unconscious and into literal reality. Marshall McLuhan famously argued that “the medium is the message,” that the tools we use alter human consciousness far more than the content we pump through them. What happens to the artist when the tool becomes so smooth, so efficient, and so powerful that it no longer fights back?

The “Genie” in the Subconscious

We have a fundamentally broken understanding of what creativity actually is. We treat it like an active, conscious muscle, something we own and operate. But the ancient Romans understood it better. They didn’t believe a person was a genius; they believed you had a genius. The genius (the root word of “genie”) was an external, semi-divine entity that temporarily lived in your wall and whispered ideas to you while you worked.

In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan and tech investor Marc Andreessen parsed this exact phenomenon while discussing Stephen King. Rogan pointed out that he vastly preferred King’s work from the days when the author was completely blasted on cocaine and alcohol.

It’s a provocative point, but it uncovers a profound psychological truth: the creative process isn’t 100% ours. Carl Jung mapped this out with his concept of the Collective Unconscious, a deep, shared reservoir of archetypes and symbols common to all human beings. When King was operating in an altered, chaotic state, his conscious Ego was effectively knocked out. The background processing units of his mind were left entirely unhindered, plugging straight into the raw current of the collective unconscious to bring back terrifying, universal visions.

True creativity is a mechanism operating in the dark. We catch the vision, we feel the lightning hit the rod, and we do the manual labor of translating it into a story through the mediums of our time, whether that’s a film camera, an animation desk, or a digital canvas.

But then comes the trap: success.

The audience sees the finished masterpiece. They don’t see the dark, messy, subconscious pipeline; they only see you, and so how it made them feel is attributed to you. They applaud. They call you a genius, a smart guy with a big imagination. And your Ego (fat, happy, and inflated) believes them. You start thinking you are the god, rather than just the antenna. And that is exactly when you start getting in the way of the process.

The Chokehold of the Ego: From Lucas to Cameron

Once the Ego takes credit for what the subconscious delivered, the artist stops listening to the muse and starts manually steering the ship.

Look at George Lucas. When Star Wars exploded in 1977, it triggered a massive, global catharsis because it tapped perfectly into Aristotle’s principles of Poetics, specifically, the imitation of universal truths and organic unity. It didn’t belong to George Lucas the individual; it belonged to the cultural ether.

But decades later, Lucas’s Ego told him that Star Wars was his personal property (technically yes, but…), declaring that the original theatrical cuts were merely broken stepping stones toward his “true vision.” He went back and littered the frames with digital dewbacks, CGI rocks, and fundamentally altered characters (making Greedo shoot first). He treated a living, breathing cultural archetype like a piece of personal software that needed a patch update. The audience revolted because he violated the universal catharsis they had collectively experienced, all to serve his surface-level, conscious meddling.

James Cameron fell into the exact same trap. In his early, hungry days, his Ego was quieted by the sheer hustle of survival. He channeled visceral, raw, terrifying human survival beats in The Terminator, Aliens, and T2.

By the time he made Titanic, the surface-level talent had begun to mimic the old subconscious blueprints. Take a look under the hood: Titanic is structurally identical to The Terminator. You have a cold, unyielding, mechanical force (the machine / the iceberg) locked on an inevitable path of destruction. You have a working-class savior sent by fate (Kyle Reese / Jack Dawson) who rescues a woman trapped in an oppressive environment (Sarah Connor / Rose). The savior dies in ice or steel so that the woman can survive and evolve into a warrior.

It worked because the archetype was bulletproof. But by the time Cameron reached Avatar, the inflation was complete. Instead of letting a subconscious vision manifest organically through the physical friction of film making, he spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build an environment of absolute digital control. With no limitations left to fight, he used his massive platform to preach high-and-mighty, surface-level political allegories. The medium stopped being a tool for deep discovery and became a megaphone for his conscious opinions.

The Real Friction: Why Paradoxically AI Keeps the Muse Alive

This is why the current hand-wringing over AI is missing the entire point. The danger of AI isn’t the technology itself; it’s how the inflated artist reacts to it. If a creator treats a generative network as a magic shortcut to instantly output their surface-level conscious intent, or uses it merely to slap together slick, immediate commentary on current events, of course they will fail. They will become exactly like Brian Bolland with Photoshop or George Lucas with his digital dewbacks; technically flawless, visually polished, and entirely hollow.

However, if you actually look at how independent animators, VFX artists, and storytellers are using these tools to bypass the broken studio system, a completely different reality emerges.

AI does not eliminate friction; it fundamentally alters it. It introduces a brand-new, chaotic digital playground where the conscious Ego is stripped of total control. When an independent creator builds complex node structures, blends anything from CGI to live-action miniatures with neural rendering networks, or experiments with frame-to-frame parameters, they aren’t getting a perfect mirror image of their conscious intent. The machine constantly throws back beautiful, bizarre, unintended mutations, unexpected glitches, and visual artifacts. Why would any truly creative person see that as a flaw?

My friends, this is the exact point where the modern muse sneaks back into the room.

The tool forces the artist back into a state of discovery. You are no longer a dictator enforcing your high-and-mighty conscious blueprint upon the canvas; you are a collaborator standing on a new frontier, forced to react to the unexpected genius thrown at you by a new medium. It keeps you on your toes. It breaks your patterns. It forces your conscious mind to wait, to adapt, and to discover archetypes you could never have planned for on a whiteboard.

The muse is far too ancient and powerful to be killed by a new piece of technology. She survived the printing press, the synthesizer, and the digital camera. The tech isn’t the problem, the artist’s inflated ego is. The muse will step out of your way for that every time, but good luck doing anything worth while without her. If independent creators want to build an era of truly undeniable storytelling, we have to stop trying to kill new mediums because they don’t conform to the limited vision thinking that says, “this is how we’ve always done it so it’s the only way it can be done.” That’s just repeating old blueprints, and why Hollywood sucks today. We have to kick the “smart guy” out of the driver’s seat, and start listening to the unexpected lightning hitting our wires.

But a keen aspect of frontiers that most people are unwilling to accept is that they are never peaceful. As soon as a new territory opens up that promises to decentralize power and hand the keys of creation to the individual, the old guards and the bad actors move in to salt the earth. This is true for indie film makers striving in the face of Hollywood’s dying monopoly, but it’s important to understand that it also goes far beyond that.

Right now, we are witnessing a bizarre, hyper-synchronized hysteria sweeping through internet comment sections, town halls, and local zoning boards. If you believe the headlines drifting through the black mirror of social media, data centers, the literal engines of our digital now, and its future, are malevolent monoliths built solely to drain our water tables, crash our power grids, and boil the planet.

It is a terrifying narrative. It is also a carefully manufactured lie.

I’ve joked before that the anti-AI crowd has quickly become the new vegans of the digital world. Yes, some people are entirely sincere in their endeavors. Good for them. But the vast majority don’t actually know why they’re throwing a tantrum. They just want to make absolutely sure that everyone knows by blurting it out in every comment section of their scroll, at every conceivable opportunity. It requires zero creative output, but it instantly grants them membership into a self-appointed, morally superior class of people. It’s an identity badge earned by shouting shouting down other people’s efforts to build something new.

Dismantling the Static “1%” Myth

This moral grandstanding relies heavily on an infantilized, cinematic view of the world. The narrative always circles back to the same villain: an all-controlling, static “one percent” corporate cabal that manipulates the entire global dynamic from a smoky boardroom.

It’s an edifying cartoon, but it ignores how reality actually functions. The “one percent” is not a permanent aristocracy; it is a fluid statistical bucket. People enter it, lose their footing, and drop out of it constantly. Wealth and influence change hands because markets shift, legacy giants fail to innovate, and new technologies disrupt the status quo.

Furthermore, the entire global population has fundamentally benefited from this dynamic. The legendary economist Milton Friedman famously illustrated this using the example of a simple lead pencil. He noted that there is not a single person on earth who knows how to make a pencil from scratch. It requires the logs from Washington, the graphite from South America, the rubber from Malaya, and the voluntary cooperation of thousands of strangers who don’t speak the same language or share the same faith. No central dictator ordered them to build it; they cooperated because the system allowed them to trade their time to serve a mutual human need, and then profit from it so they can provide for their own needs by acquiring other products born out of the same process.

Massive technology shifts do not scale because of a one-sided, tyrannical power dynamic. They scale because they fulfill a collective need. If a corporation wants to stay solvent, it cannot simply loot and pillage like an ancient kingdom; it has to create something that people actually want and find useful.

Because we have scaled technology to serve mankind via this cooperative framework, we have achieved something miraculous. For the vast majority of human history, brutal, extreme poverty was the default state of existence for 90% of the planet. Today, thanks to industrial and technological distribution, global extreme poverty has plummeted to roughly 10%. We aren’t sliding into a corporate dark age; we are living in the most prosperous era human civilization has ever recorded.

The Geopolitical Sabotage

So, why the sudden, vicious pushback against data centers? Let’s look beyond the cultivated mass-hysteria for a five-minute stretch and look at the global chessboard. We are currently locked in a digital space race. The nation that secures dominance over advanced computing power will command the global economy, cybersecurity, and medical infrastructure for the next hundred years.

Our geopolitical adversaries know they cannot out-innovate a decentralized network of Western creators, engineers, and thinkers in an open market. They don’t have the culture of free expression required to catch lightning in a bottle. So, how do you win a race you can’t run? You trip your opponent.

By funneling dark money through opaque proxy organizations, shell NGOs, and automated bot networks, foreign intelligence agencies easily target specific Western voter blocks. They don’t have to convince you that their system is better; they just have to convince a couple hundred hyper-activated online activists that a data center down the road is going to steal their drinking water, who will then vote in someone too stupid to run the show, and poof, you have more effective disruption than a natural disaster. (Although, they my thrown in a wild fire for good measure.)

Suddenly, a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project that could discover localized cancer cures or revolutionize regional agricultural supply chains is tied up in local city council litigation for three years because a mob of protestors showed up with signs. The protestors think they’re saving the trees. In reality, they are operating as unpaid, long-distance foot soldiers for foreign regimes trying to cripple our technological sovereignty from within.

The Anatomy of the Lie

The propaganda works because it takes a microscopic grain of truth and inflates it into a monster movie, that feeds the egos of soft-headed, pathological narcissists who otherwise have nothing in their lives to make them feel special. The narrative insists that these data centers are running open taps, drinking the community dry, and plunging cities into darkness.

It’s an effective ghost story, but it completely ignores the reality of modern engineering. The latest generation of data centers don’t consume water the way a city does; they utilize closed-loop cooling systems. They recycle the exact same liquid payload indefinitely, sealed within a closed system like a high-end PC cooling rig or a car radiator. Some don’t even use water, but rather cooling tunnels that bring in cold air from the north.

Furthermore, data center operators are currently the single largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy on earth. Their massive capital investments aren’t draining existing local power grids, they are actively funding and constructing entirely new, robust green energy grids that wouldn’t otherwise exist. I personally think nuclear reactors, which have the smallest environmental footprint of any other energy sours would be better, and you can fact check me on that, but oh well.

However, we know that the mobs don’t look at engineering schematics. They don’t want to see how AI is being used right now to optimize power grids, predict blackouts, and manage distribution to prevent energy crises. They’re too busy being ignorant and endlessly tiresome to do anything other than see a scary number out of context in a comment section, throw up their hands in a fit of manufactured moral superiority, and demand we stop the future from happening.

The New Frontier

Every single time humanity steps into an unknown territory, the low-effort thinkers gather at the border to scream about the end of the world. “We don’t consent to this!” Yeah? Well, the rest of us didn’t consent to being held by you, either. When the first automobiles began rolling off assembly lines, the critics didn’t see progress. They saw loud, terrifying, smoke-belching iron monsters that were going to destroy livelihoods. They couldn’t conceive of a world where the automobile would create modern emergency services, fire brigades, and paramedics. They couldn’t envision how motorized food transportation would stabilize supply chains and ensure fresh sustenance could reach isolated communities before spoiling. We did it anyway and the global poverty levels took a major dip. You’re welcome.

Today’s anti-data-center crusaders are the spiritual descendants of those exact same town criers. They are the same people who, if left to their own devices, would have banned the printing press because it might put scribes out of work.

The data centers going up across the country aren’t corporate monuments to greed; they are the infrastructure of human potential. They are the engines that will help us map custom genetic cures for terminal illnesses, design local communities to weather hardships, and give independent creators the computing power to bypass Hollywood forever.

Don’t get me wrong. The risks are real, and we must navigate them with wisdom and discipline. But we cannot let the loudest, most short-sighted voices in the room drag us back into the dark out of sheer, unadulterated fear. That would only leave us more vulnerable to those who hope we’ll abandon it’s use, thus leaving the door open to socially engineer us out of existence. The digital frontier is calling, and it’s time to decide whether we’re going to build it, or just stand on the sidelines wearing our moral superiority badges while the rest of the world moves forward.

The idea behind her is that she is so beautiful, so statuesque, that she will be easy for the audience to fall in love with, in the same way her husband did. While she is kind, loving, and a devoted wife to her man, we also have to show that she has a lot of growing to do as a person, because her honeymoon phase was still in full swing and she was well on her way to becoming a well kept, and maybe even a high maintenance wife, before crash landing on the deserted world of Omega-12.

She’s beautiful and she knows this means most people, even her strong and forthright husband have a hard time saying no to her. For a hot minute, this almost became a problem as the latest AI models were prone to take my drawings and designs, and interpret them into depictions of Tara so realistic as to be indistinguishable from a photography. The problem with this being that she ceased to be the animated character in a fabricated world, that I envisioned and when set into motion, crossed that fine barrier into a magazine centerfold seductress.

Escape From Planet Omega-12 is sexy, but it also a marriage story, centered around a passionate monogamous relationship, and redefined by the sudden evaporation of pretense and comfort. Our Feral Eden does not respond to feminine whiles, and Brio’s contra working through Blob knows that his wife will not survive if he continues to humor her, as he did when they had every comfort.

So, in order to show her as a sort of Helen of Troy, but humanizer her, I always felt she needed a soft yet detailed animated feel so make my visual storytelling more flexible, so I could place her in both intimate and adult settings, as well as into fantastical worlds make as dioramas of various art materials.

After experimenting with different levels of realism and cartoonish representations, both drawing, prompting, and compositing, I have finally happened upon this style, which puts me in mind of old watercolor fashion illustrations, but with a much more detailed and updated twist.

After the designs through their paces, showing Tara in different situations, like bloodied, under black-light, and drenched, doing some basic animations like walk cycles, I knew that I had finally landed on what I needed. After a some passes to improve details, and make sure she had Tara’s face consistently, I’m pleased to show you these final designs which will be used in our animated feature film.
