I know how easy it is to become enchanted by life.

Something catches my attention. A person or idea… an opportunity or possibility. Before long, imagination takes over and begins filling in the spaces. one starts thinking about what could happen, what something could become, how one might feel if everything unfolded the way one hoped.

Sometimes the imagined version becomes more compelling than what is actually happening.

We have done this with people. We have done it with relationships, money, work, sex, spirituality, recognition and plans for the future. The details change, while the underlying feeling stays remarkably familiar.

Maybe this is it.

Maybe this person will make life feel fuller. Maybe this opportunity will create security or this experience will bring peace. Maybe reaching some future point will finally allow one to settle into onesSelf.

Advaita Vedanta gives us a useful way of understanding this through Maya.

Maya is the appearance of multiplicity within the One reality. It is the world of forms, names, experiences, identities, stories, desires and possibilities that consciousness encounters.

And it is convincing… It is supposed to be.

This whole movement of life is Lila, the divine play. Consciousness experiences ItSelf through countless forms and stories. For a while, we get to experience being this particular person, living this particular life, loving these particular people, carrying these particular memories.

The trouble begins whenever we become so absorbed in the character that we forget the Awareness experiencing the character

The Promise Hidden Inside Desire

Desire has an interesting way of speaking.

It rarely says, “I would enjoy experiencing this”.

It tends to whisper: “Once I have this, something inside me will finally settle.”

That is where one learns to pay attention.

We can want intimacy, companionship, money, adventure, pleasure, recognition, comfort, success… and hundreds of other things. Every one of those desires can have a place in a human life.

We simply have to look at what we are asking the desire to accomplish.

When we follow a desire far enough inward, we usually find something very basic underneath it.

“I want peace.”

“I want love.”

“I want freedom.”

“I want to feel whole.”

“I want to feel safe.”

“I want to feel seen.”

“I want to feel alive.”

Advaita invites looking deeper… Where do those experiences actually arise?

They arise here.

Within consciousness

Sat Chit Ananda

Vedanta uses the words Sat Chit Ananda as a pointer toward the nature of reality.

Sat is Being.

Chit is Consciousness.

Ananda is the fullness inherent in Being ItSelf.

This points toward Brahman, ultimate reality and toward Atman, the Self.

The great realization of Advaita is that Atman and Brahman are One Reality.

This changes the direction of the search.

We have spent plenty of time looking outward for something that would make us feel complete. Yet every experience of completeness we have ever known has appeared within the same Awareness that is here. right now.

That realization can be humbling.

We can spend years chasing a feeling that has been quietly sitting underneath the chase.

Maya Knows How to Sing

Maya becomes especially convincing through imagination… as an unrealized possibility can remain perfect because life has never had the opportunity to make it ordinary.

We can imagine a relationship without disagreements or success without responsibility.

We can imagine money without complications and pleasure without consequences.

We can imagine another version of life where everything finally falls into place.

Fantasy has a tremendous advantage over reality… imagination gets to write the entire script.

A thought appears… we entertain it.

An image develops… emotion attaches itself to the image.

Soon we are responding emotionally to something that has happened almost entirely inside thought.

Then desire starts singing.

Go after it.

Get closer.

Hold onto it.

This could finally be the thing.

We must learn to become curious whenever the mind starts promising arrival.

Arrival where?

And who exactly is supposed to arrive?

When the Water Starts Getting Rough

Some of the strongest illusions in life have arrive wrapped in beautiful experiences.

Attraction can easily become projection just as ambitions can become obsessive. Pleasure can become compulsory and our spirituality can become an identity.

Romance often carries expectations that another person was never meant to fulfill.

Maya can make all of these things shimmer.

That is why Awareness matters.

We must allow enough space inside ourselves to see what is happening… while it is happening.

We can experience attraction fully.

We can love.

We can desire.

We can make money.

We can enjoy sex.

We can pursue dreams.

We can build things, lose things, celebrate, grieve, travel, create, fail, begin again… and participate completely in being human.

This is Lila.

The practice is remembering what We Are while the play unfolds.

A simple question that helps is…

“Am I experiencing this, or am I asking this experience to tell me what I am?”

That question can save one from a lot of confusion.

Getting Lost in the Character

Sometimes we forget.

We become the person who needs approval.

The lover who wants reassurance.

The worker who wants recognition.

The person afraid of losing something.

The seeker trying to become enlightened.

The mind creates this character and then spends enormous amounts of energy trying to protect it.

Yet something is aware of the entire process.

Something sees the fear.

Something notices the wanting.

Something witnesses the fantasy.

Something knows the body.

Something knows the thoughts.

Something knows the story we call “me.”

That realization deserves more attention than we usually give it.

When we ask, “What is aware of this?”, attention begins turning toward its Source.

Thought cannot quite capture what it finds there.

There is simply Awareness.

Present before the explanation.

Present before the identity.

Present before whatever story happens to be running through our head today.

Coming Back to What Is Here

When we feel ourselves becoming consumed by a possibility, we must begin asking ourselves quite a few questions.

“What am I hoping this will give me?”

“What feeling am I expecting to experience once I get it?”

“How much of what I am responding to is actually happening right now?”

“How much of this exists inside imagination?”

“What happens if I stop rehearsing the future for a moment?”

“What is here before I add the story?”

And finally:

“Who is aware of all of this?”

That last question changes the focus and brings us home.

Desire can still be there. The person can still be beautiful. The opportunity can still be exciting. And the future can still hold possibilities.

We simply remember where all of it is appearing.

Living Inside the Dream

We have little interest in becoming detached from life.

We want to be here for it.

We want to love deeply. We want to laugh until breathing becomes difficult. We want good food, meaningful conversation, beautiful places, intimacy, friendship, creativity, adventure, quiet mornings, wild evenings and all the strange experiences that come with occupying a human body for however long it lasts.

We must also remember that every experience shifts.

Feelings arise and pass away.

Bodies develop and decline.

Relationships evolve.

Circumstances change.

Thoughts come and go.

The person we believe ourselves to be, has changed countless times already. Every cell in our bodies is quite literally replaced through a span of seven years. You are an entirely new Being.

Yet Awareness has been here through every version.

Keep drawing back to Advaita. Keep returning to something incredibly simple…

Before we describe ourselves, witness the phrase that arises within the mind… “I am…”.

Before we explain our lives, we begin with, “I am”.

Before desire tells us where happiness lives, there is always, “I am”.

Sat.

Chit.

Ananda.

Maya will keep singing just as Lila will keep unfolding. There will always be another beautiful possibility somewhere on the horizon.

We can enjoy the song.

We can follow some desires and allow others to pass.

We can fall in love with this strange experience of being alive.

And every so often, we can become quiet enough to remember:

The peace we keep searching for somewhere inside the story has always been present as the Awareness experiencing the story all along.

But is that actually true?

How many connections have you stayed in long after your heart had quietly stepped away? How many relationships have you continued participating in because of duty, obligation, kindness, guilt or compassion… even when something deeper in you knew the connection had already completed its purpose?

For many of us, this belief goes unquestioned for years.

If a relationship is meaningful, we assume it must have a future and if the love shared is genuine, we believe it should be preserved at almost any cost. We were taught it deserves a defined role, a recognized structure or a permanent place in the story of our lives.

And yet, life has a way of dismantling even our most deeply held assumptions.

Through experiences with polyamory, ethical non-monogamy and contemplative traditions such as Advaita Vedanta, one may begin to encounter a more uncomfortable and liberating truth…

Intimacy does not require permanence.

Love does not become more valuable simply because it lasts longer nor does a connection need to stretch across years, titles, agreements, or expectations in order to be a valuable experience.

Often, the desire to secure, define or possess a relationship says less about love itself and more about ones fears… the fear of abandonment, the fear of rejection, the fear that if something is not permanent, it was never truly ours.

Love was never meant to be owned. Some connections arrive not to stay forever, but to awaken something within us. To open us, soften us and reveal whatever truth we could not have accessed alone.

The deepest connections in our lives are not valuable because they last. They are valuable because they are fully experienced… freely, honestly and authentically… in the moment they arise.

No promise of forever.

No demand for permanence.

No need to turn Love into possession.

We cultivate Trust in Source to meet That which is here in this moment… and the grace to let It change when It must.

The Story We Inherit About Love

Most of us are programmed with socially acceptable relationship parameters long before we ever consciously try any… let alone choose the one that actually resonate with our individual expression.

The general narrative we are fed is that mutual attraction leads to connection… and when that connection is found to be compatible… exclusivity is expected for it to become more. Exclusivity leads to responsibility for those involved… commitments and mutual investments… involving deeper entanglement and attachments.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that path. Many people find deep meaning, stability and fulfillment within it. The structure can be beautiful and is exactly what Love wants to express through those specific vehicles of consciousness.

The problem begins when we mistake one possible expression of love for the only valid expression of love… because once intimacy appears, anxiety often follows close behind. We want to feel safe. We want reassurance. We want to know that what feels precious today will still be available to us tomorrow.

What if our pursuit of certainty sometimes prevents us from fully experiencing the relationship itself? How often do we try to secure future experiences before we have truly been present in this moment?

One of its central insights is that much of human suffering arises from identification and attachment to potentials. We cling to forms, identities, roles and expectations, hoping they will provide lasting security.

But life does not hold still. Reality is fluid, dynamic and constantly changing. We treat changing forms as though they possess lasting solidity and relationships are not exempt from this.

People change as circumstances evolve. Desires shift with experience and priorities rearrange themselves as life unfolds in ways none of us can fully predict.

And often, the deepest suffering does not come from change itself. It comes from our insistence that change should not happen. Anyone who has loved deeply knows this.

The harder we try to hold onto an experience, the more clearly, we feel its movement. The tighter we grip a relationship, the more we may lose contact with its Truth.

Love is asking us to meet It honestly, while It is here. To be cherished without needing to be controlled. Meaningful without needing to become permanent.

One that can remain real… even if it changes.

Intimacy ≠ Commitment

One of the most transformative lessons I have learned is that intimacy does not equate commitment… though they can absolutely coexist.

In many relationships, they do.

Commitment can create the conditions for intimacy to deepen over time offering consistency, devotion and care… but commitment is not proof of intimacy and intimacy does not always require commitment.

Modern culture often teaches us to confuse the two.

We were programmed to believe that the more committed a relationship becomes, the more intimate it must be. But reality tells a more complicated story.

Many relationships last for years while emotional distance slowly grows between the people involved. Partners can share a home, a mortgage, a family or simply a last name… and still feel profoundly unseen by one another.

A wedding certificate does not automatically confirm commitment… just as thoughtforms of a shared future together does not guarantee presence.

Many of us have experienced moments of astonishing intimacy outside any formal commitment.

It may have been a conversation with a stranger during a difficult season… or a friendship that lasted only briefly… but met us at exactly the right time. Even romances that occupied a short chapter of life, yet changed the way we understood ourselves forever.

These experiences reveal intimacy is about presence.

It is the experience of being genuinely seen.

It is vulnerability offered and received.

It is trust.

It is openness.

It is the rare and beautiful moment when another person encounters your human’ness without trying to reduce you to a role, a function or an expectation.

Advaita means “not two.” The tradition questions one of our most basic assumptions that we are separate selves relating to other separate selves. Beneath our personalities, histories, preferences, wounds and assumed identities… there is the Truth… a Unified Consciousness that is not as divided as it appears to be.

If intimacy is the experience of truly seeing another person, perhaps its deepest expression happens when we see beyond the masks and roles.

Beyond the labels and stories we use to define ourselves and each other.

For a moment, see beyond the forms need to define, secure and control the connection and what remains is simple presence.

You are seen… and we are here… together…

Neither a possession. No promises or expectations. No structures imposed from the outside.

Just Truth, revealed between beings willing to be present, acknowledging something that was already there.

The Difference Between Freedom and Avoidance

Whenever we speak about non-possessive love, a very understandable concern tends to arise… Is this really freedom or is it just emotional unavailability dressed up in spiritual language?

There is a world of difference between freedom and avoidance as avoidance fears intimacy. Freedom welcomes it.

Avoidance resists vulnerability while freedom understands that vulnerability is part of being alive.

Avoidance says:

“I do not need anyone.”

“People are replaceable.”

“I refuse to depend on others.”

“I am above attachment.”

But often, these attitudes arise from fear-based programming… a need for protection… not freedom. They are attempts to avoid disappointment by refusing to emotionally invest… keeping love at a distance so that loss cannot come too close.

Freedom manifests differently.

Freedom says:

“I care about you deeply.”

“I value what we share.”

“I am willing to be vulnerable with you.”

“And I do not need to own your future in order to appreciate your presence today.”

That final statement is key because the desire to possess another’s expression often disguises itself as love… under the cover of guidance and good intentions.

But possession is usually rooted in fear.

Fear of loss.

Fear of uncertainty.

Fear of change.

Fear of abandonment.

We may tell ourselves we are trying to protect the relationship, when in reality we are trying to protect ourselves from the discomfort of not knowing what comes next.

Advaita Vedanta offers a powerful way to InnerStand this as it repeatedly points to the role fear plays in attachment. When we identify ourselves only as a separate ego… an individual self trying to secure its place in an unpredictable world… we naturally become anxious about anything that threatens our stability.

So we cling and grasp.

We try to control.

We turn people into promises.

We turn love into a contract against future pain.

But the very act of grasping often creates the suffering we hoped to avoid. The more tightly we attempt to hold on… the more fragile connections feel due to that belief… and often manifests loss due to scarcity mindset.

True freedom does not mean we stop caring or become detached in a cold or indifferent way. It does not mean we avoid commitments, tenderness, responsibilities or depth.

True freedom means we remain open to love without demanding guarantees from it and allow ourselves to be vulnerable without turning another into a possession.

And this requires courage than possession ever does. It is relatively easy to love someone when we believe we have secured them. To stay open-hearted while admitting that every relationship contains uncertainty requires Knowing.

That every person is a living, changing Expression of The One… and ultimately beyond our control. Every connection must be met as it is in the present moment…as it arises… not simply managed for future use when circumstances necessitate such.

When we stop treating people as possessions, we begin encountering them as living beings. Not as extensions of our plans or answers to our fears. We no longer see connections as guarantees of our physical safety or financial security.

Each emanation of Source is acknowledged as a whole and unique expression. Our appreciation deepens when we witness them carefully and become more present in each moment of interaction for the messages and lessons to be learned. When we release the need to control connections as they arise, the currents flow without interference.

There is no longer the need to defend anything because there isn't the burden of fear.

Relationship as Structure or Relationships as Lived Experiences?

I have come to appreciate the difference between relationships experienced as needed structures… and those relationships consciously engaged in simply as desired experiences.

Some relationships entered into for structure include labels, agreements and clearly defined responsibilities. Schedules, commitments, living arrangements and future plans are often a part of this.

In many cases, they are deeply valuable. They help people situate themselves and collaborate with another for the highest good of the unit. They are able to coordinate their lives based on a mutual schedule, participate in the joy of raising children, share resources as needed, co-create stability for the whole and build trust over time.

Structured relationships can be very useful models for those who are just learning to be responsible for themselves but difficulties begin when the structure becomes more important than the lived experience it was meant to support. The lived experience of relationship is something else entirely.

It exists in laughter and shared silence… affection and meaningful conversations. It is there when one is understood without having to explain everything… and in those moments of comfort no contract can manufacture.

A label may describe a connection, but it cannot replace sincere presence. And while agreements do support intimacy, just as shared goals offer direction… it cannot guarantee continuity.

Advaita Vedanta offers a useful analogy here:

We can mistake the map for the territory. A map can be incredibly helpful. It gives us orientation and helps us navigate. It allows us to understand where we were… currently are… and where we might be headed depending on the yes’s and no’s we’ve issued in response to each moment.

But the map is not the landscape itself. You cannot feel the sun from a map or smell the earth. You cannot experience the path by studying the lines that represent it. You must live the experience.

A relationship may remain structurally intact while becoming emotionally absent.

Was it genuinely lived? Was there Presence? Truth? Was there care? How about openness?

A friendship that lasted one year, may transform someone’s life just as deeply as a romance shared for a single season. Each have the potential to open someone’s heart in ways they never expected. That connection that eventually faded was still profoundly worthwhile and its value does not vanish simply because it changed.

Its meaning is not erased because it did not prove permanent. Some relationships are simply not meant to become lifelong structures… just required curriculums… and sometimes, that is enough.

The Illusion of Possession and the Recognition of Love

At the center of this entire discourse is a deceptively simple question… Can we ever truly possess another human being?

We can possess agreements and expectations.

We can possess legal arrangements.

We can possess stories about who someone is… what they mean to us… and opinions on what role they play in our lives.

But the person themselves? They remain beyond ownership.

Their expression will continue to evolve with each experience. They will surprise us if we attempt to define them and continue to change in ways we cannot predict or control. Each expression we witness will truly remain, in the deepest sense, a mystery.

No contract can halt change and no promise can remove uncertainty.

No label can contain the fullness of a human life.

Perhaps this is where so much relational suffering begins…. with the belief that love gives us authority over another’s personal experience or Expression of Self.

Advaita Vedanta illuminates that the very sense of ownership arises from a mistaken identification with the separate ego. We imagine there is a distinct “me” who can possess a distinct “you.”

From that assumption, the desire to acquire, secure and control begins to take shape.

But if reality is ultimately non-dual… if separation is not as absolute as it appears… then possession becomes impossible from the beginning.

How can one part of the whole own another part of the same whole?

Loving another is not an act of acquisition.

It is recognition of consciousness that is being.. of shared humanness. The recognition of The Mystery that Witnesses in each One.

This is why non-possessive love can feel so spacious. When we stop trying to own people, we become free to appreciate them. There is ease. We no longer need them to fulfill predetermined mental roles in order to justify our attachments.

We no longer demand that they remain unchanged so we can feel secure nor do we reduce them to a version of themselves that best protects us from uncertainty.

We meet them as they are in each precious moment. Alive… changing… and free to become as they wish.

And in doing so, We begin to experience love without needing to turn it into an investment.We begin to care without needing to control or exert authority.

The deepest form of love is not the one that says, “You are mine.”

It’s the one that says:

“I see you, honor you and am grateful to meet you here.”

The less we attempt to possess love, the more fully we seem able to experience it.

Love Was Never Meant to Be Owned

The longer one reflects on intimacy through both lived experience and the teachings of Advaita Vedanta… the more one may return to one simple truth…

Loveing relationships do not need to be exclusive in order to be genuine or considered valid. ENM does not diminish the value of commitment. Far from it.

Commitment can be a profound expression of care for each individual involved. Shared responsibilities, long-term devotion and multiple enduring partnership can bring extraordinary richness to life. There is immense satisfaction in building something together over time. There is beauty in choosing each partner again and again. In staying when staying is honest, alive and freely chosen.

These connections are meaningful because they are lived in their truth. Reflections came together and something genuine occurred between them. For a time, they shared presence, vulnerability, trust, tenderness and care.

These connections opened parts of ourselves that needed to be seen and innerstood… truths that could only be experienced through that unique relationship.

Love is not something we can manufacture through effort. It’s not something we secure through possession.

Love is already present beneath our fears and attachments. Beneath our attempts to control what cannot truly be controlled.

When we release the demand for permanence, we discover that intimacy does not cease to be experienced in every moment it arises. With release of the desire to limit another, each connection often becomes more fulfilling through the freedom that is experienced.

When we release the illusion of ownership, love reveals ItSelf clearly and is known to be the greatest freedom available to us.

The freedom to care deeply without clinging and love without sacrificing One’s Truth.

To welcome each intimate moment without demanding permanence… honoring each connection without forcing it to conform to a socially acceptable script.

The worth of a relationship is not to be measured only by how long it lasts… by how often people communicate nor by whether it is recognizable to others.

However long it appeared within The Never Ending Story and ever-changing movement of existence, it mattered.

That, really is enough.

What might relationships feel like if they were rooted in consent, honesty, emotional care and the spiritual understanding offered by Advaita Vedanta…. that beneath our labels, roles, identities and relationship structures, each of us are Unique Expressions of The One?

Can we show up clearly? Can love be chosen freely? Can connections grow from resonance, care and truth rather than fear, pressure or possession?

Perhaps love becomes more ethical when we keep asking… Whose dignity is being protected here? Whose voice is being heard? Whose body, identity and lived experience are being honored?

Wholeness Before Partnership

Advaita Vedanta teaches that beneath each changing life experience… every person is already fundamentally whole… a unique and perfect expression.

This does not mean life will feels easy… for it is defined by the experiences of opposites. Experiences of heartbreak, longing, desire, grief, anxiety, joy, confusion and old wounds. They are part of This Moment. Response-ability to one’s self remains despite relationship status. A person does not become complete through romance.

Love may enrich life, but it does not create worth.

Autonomy-centered polyamory begins when each person enters connection as a fully functional and self-sufficient human being. Each relationship can be meaningful, passionate, domestic, spiritual, temporary or lifelong and those inside that relationship remain more than a role.

Real autonomy feels liberating… permitting each person to remain whole, sovereign and independent… while connected deeply to each expression witnessed in the present moment.

Commitment Without Possession

A common misunderstanding says autonomy and commitment cannot share the same room.

They can.

Some relationships naturally become more central. A nesting partner, spouse, co-parent, anchor partner, or long-term companion may share daily life, money, home, family, ritual, care work or future planning. Those bonds carry substantial influence on each ones lived experience and deserve respect.

Yet priority does not have to become control.

A primary partnership can be tender and devoted while still honoring freedom. That shared life can exist alongside body autonomy, emotional honesty and personal growth. Commitment can mean choosing each other with awareness, again and again, rather than claiming authority over another Ones’ Expression.

This is where Advaita Vedanta becomes practical in inviting a loosening of attachment to fixed forms. A home, title, marriage or shared routine can be a beautiful experience… but suffering arises when the forms become more important than the synergy generated through co-creation.

Ethical non-monogamy asks for living agreements. Agreements that need truth, consent and room for revision consistently. A loving structure should support life rather than trap it.

Race, class, immigration status, disability, gender identity and family culture can shape what freedom looks like. A public relationship may feel safe for one person and risky for another. Even conversation about openness may feel exciting to one nervous system and be overwhelming to another. Ethical love pays attention to these contrasting realities.

Commitment becomes stronger when nobody has to disappear inside it.

Resonance Over Relationship Scripts

Resonance is the felt sense of alignment that can arrive through shared values, emotional ease, attraction, humor, spiritual curiosity or simple recognition. While at times it expands slowly… intense encounters can appear suddenly. Some may last for years… others bless a short season and change shape.

Most of us were taught to measure love by permanence and exclusivity. If a relationship lasts, it is called successful but if it ends, it is considered failure. Those views can limit the richness of human connections.

Connections hold learning and necessary experiences… they are meaningful regardless of whether they last. All arrive at the right moment.

A brief connection can open the heart… a long friendship can carry more devotion than a romance. Queerplatonic bonds can become a steady home for the spirit. Sensual connections between friends can be sacred… even when it never becomes domestic.

Polyamory gives space for these varied forms and allows love to be understood beyond the usual ladder of dating, exclusivity, marriage and cohabitation. Those steps can be beautiful for people… and may bring great benefit… but they are far from the only valid path.

Advaita Vedanta reminds us that forms change. Human emotions arise and settle… wealth may ebb or flow. Finances and availability change. A wise heart learns to honor what is present, while allowing movement when alignment shifts.

This does not make people disposable. It makes presence more important. A connection deserves honesty while it is alive and gratitude through every transformation. It also deserves care if it ends.

Resonance asks us for candor… is this connection true in the present moment?

That question… if answered to ones’ self transparently… can guide the currents of love with surprising clarity.

Emotional Responsibility Is the Practice

Polyamory can sound expansive and liberating, and it can be. It also brings each person face to face with fear, jealousy, comparison, longing, exhaustion and old attachment wounds.

Spiritual language cannot replace emotional responsibility.

A grounded polyamorous life requires honest communication, self-inquiry, boundaries, repair, sexual health care and compassion. Feelings need space, yet feelings do not automatically become commands. Jealousy may reveal an unmet need just as fear may point toward an old wound and discomfort may signal a broken agreement.

The work is learning the difference.

Speak from tenderness rather than accusation and offer reassurance without surrendering autonomy. If necessary… slow down, check in and repair harm with maturity.

Gender-affirming care is part of that maturity as is racial awareness, respect for disability, neurodivergence, faith, culture and privacy. Ethical love pays attention to the whole person, not only the romantic role.

This path asks for courage… asking each person to say the hard things with kindness. It asks for consent before assumptions and truth before performance. This path requires care… even when the conversation feels awkward or scary.

That is the everyday practice. Less drama and more transparency. No ownership… only presence.

Love in Each Experience

At the heart of this approach is a simple belief… relationships are lived experiences of Source Consciousness.

Some experiences become deeply rooted... or show reoccurring patterns within Awareness. Some connections remain light and bright… teaching through joy and enthusiasm. Others teach through grief, abandonment and manipulation. One may find family… build memories… then drift apart. Each experience carries meaning when observed from the point of Awareness.

Advaita Vedanta does not disregard human needs. Consent and boundaries still matter. Names and pronouns still matter. Safety matters. Culture still matters.

The vehicle of consciousness still matters.

Love free from ownership is not detached or cold. It is intimate, authentic and transparent. It allows each expression of Source to fulfill their steps in the dance. It allows connections to be entered freely as they arise rather than be held in limitation through fear.

Then a text lands or plans change… maybe a date goes better than expected… and the nervous system lights up. Suddenly all that spiritual ease gets replaced by a tight chest, racing thoughts and a very strong urge to become “chill” in the least chill way possible.

That is where polyamory and ethical non-monogamy become more than relationship styles and become a practice where consent, truth, desire, attachment, gender, queerness, embodiment and Spirit all sit at the same table for snacks… and a slightly awkward group chat.

Advaita Vedanta, at its heart, points toward non-duality… the recognition that beneath all shifting forms, there is one indivisible reality. One field of Consciousness.. That…Being manifested infinitely through all forms of The One Self.

Human experience occurs through these bodies… and are given unique perspective and definition through these names, our individual histories and cultures, each gender, nervous system, love language, trauma response and boundary. They are all a part of this Never-Ending Story. We are its content.

Love Beyond Ownership

Polyamory can scare people because it questions a very familiar script… love equals possession… commitment equals exclusivity… security equals control.

Love is a current moving through the whole field of experience… not an object to hold. Each lover or companion can become a doorway into that current… yet the current itself remains beyond any single form.

That sounds lovely… maybe even poetic.

Then real life enters with dishes in the sink, a date running late, childcare logistics, chronic pain, trans healthcare appointments, family expectations, cultural shame, money stress or a sudden wave of “Am I still wanted?”

This is where grounded practice matters.

Polyamory through Advaita asks, “Can love be spacious without becoming vague?”

Non-Possessive love can still makes agreements and check in. This love still honors pronouns, names, bodies, access needs, racialized experience, disability, faith background, neurodivergence and trauma history.

Spacious love still says, “That felt tender. Can we slow down?” Love like that still says, “Yes, that works for me,” or “That pace feels too fast.”

Ethical non-monogamy is ethical because everyone involved gets to be fully honest with their human. Full humanity includes delight, desire and freedom.

It can also include grief, jealousy, fatigue, insecurity, confusion and the need for reassurance.

A non-dual approach does away with shame around jealousy and also does away with using jealousy as a weapon. The feeling is welcomed, honored, witnessed and released so that responding behavior can be chosen with care.

That distinction is everything.

The Body Keeps Score, So Love Needs Pace

A trauma-informed approach to polyamory begins with the body.

This matters because ethical non-monogamy can involve a lot of activation… new partners, changing agreements, shifting attention, sexual health talks, group dynamics, metamour relationships, social stigma, family secrecy and community visibility all play a part in what is experienced and how. This path of intimacy and relating often carries layers of survival learning.

Some people learnt early that love came with conditions or that desire had to stay hidden. There are those who learnt that gender expression invited danger or that family acceptance could be withdrawn. Others learnt that speaking a boundary meant risking connection and that being “easy-going” felt safer than being honest.

So when a polyamorous relationship opens a new layer of truth, a nervous system may read that openness as threat.

This is why “just communicate” can sound a bit thin.

Communication is vital, yes… but communication works best when bodies feel enough safety to tell the truth. That means slowing down and pausing before big decisions. Checking consent more than once or making room for repair.

Advaita can help here, because it invites witnessing. The Witness is the part of Awareness that can notice sensations, thoughts and emotions arising.

“I notice heat in the chest.”

“I notice a story about being replaced.”

“I notice fear around asking for reassurance.”

This kind of witnessing creates the needed space while the feeling expresses itself… giving the person breathing room around it. That pause makes informed response possible.

Still, witnessing is a practice, rather than an escape hatch. A person can witness anger and still apologize afterwards or witness desire and still respect a boundary. A person can witness attraction and still disclose relevant information… or insecurity and still avoid controlling someone else.

Spiritual clarity and relational responsibility belong together.

Queer, Trans and Culturally Rooted Non-Dual Love

Polyamory and ethical non-monogamy often become richer when they move beyond one-size-fits-all relationship templates.

For many LGBTQIA+ communities, love has already required imagination. Many communities carry relationship wisdom far older than modern Western coupledom. Some cultures hold extended kinship as central to life. At the same time, colonialism, caste, racism and religious shame have shaped how intimacy gets policed.

Spiritually rooted polyamory needs humility.

It asks which ideas about love came from direct knowing… and which came from social conditioning…fear, patriarchy, compulsory heterosexuality or respectability?

That question may feel uncomfortable… but opens a useful door.

Advaita invites a view where every being carries divinity within them… for the Divine is expressing and experiencing through that form which is perceived by you. Ethical non-monogamy asks for structures that protect that honor in real life. Casual does fine. Kind does better. Honest does best. Period.

Metamours, Mirrors and the Practice of Seeing Clearly

A metamour is a partner of a partner. In polyamory, metamours can become friends, family, co-conspirators, distant acquaintances or simply people held with respect from across the wider web.

Advaita teaches us each metamour is a mirror.

That mirror may show generosity or comparison. It may show fear. It may show delight in shared care or the ache of wanting to be special. It may reveal a limiting social program that says there can be only one “real” beloved.

Clear seeing means allowing each connection to have a shape of its own. One bond may be romantic and domestic while another may be erotic and occasional. This one may be deeply emotional with little sexual charge. Another may be queerplatonic. Then you encounter one rooted in ritual, art, activism, parenting or shared spiritual practice.

Advaita does not require flattening these differences into sameness. In fact, mature non-dual love can appreciate difference with more tenderness as the unity experienced does not erase texture. The ocean appears as many waves. Each wave still has a curve, rhythm, temperature and shine.

Avoid spiritual shortcuts like, “All love is one, so agreements are limiting,” or “Attachment is illusion, so reassurance is unnecessary”, as that sort of talk can sound profound while causing real harm.

A more grounded version might say: “Love is vast, and this human nervous system values steadiness.” Or: “Connection has many forms, and this agreement supports trust.”

Metamour dynamics benefit from this kind of grounded clarity because people need different levels of contact. Kitchen-table polyamory works for some while parallel polyamory works beautifully for others. Garden-party polyamory lands somewhere in between. None of these forms wins a prize. The kindest structure is the one built through consent, capacity and truth.

The Obstacle is The Way

We keep coming back to this… love reveals.

It reveals longing. It reveals tenderness. It reveals conditioning.

It reveals where freedom is genuine and where fear is wearing festival clothes. It reveals hidden rules about gender, desirability, worth, race, body size, age, ability, class, spirituality and belonging.

Polyamory can speed that revelation up and place the whole inner landscape under a brighter lamp that can feel intense but also liberating.

Advaita offers the deep reassurance that beneath every wave of emotion, Awareness remains present and unjudging. Beneath every changing relationship form, Being remains whole. Beneath every persona… lover, spouse, comet, anchor partner, solo poly person, nesting partner, metamour, friend, co-parent, ex, queer elder, baby gay, auntie, uncle, sibling or beloved… there is the same Light of Consciousness.

Human love asks for practice at the level of form. So we breathe. We check in. We repair. We name needs and respect consent. We take breaks. We learn the difference between discomfort and danger. We celebrate gender euphoria. We refuse shame as a teacher.

We make room for culture, ancestry, grief, pleasure, humor and the occasional messy spreadsheet.

Polyamory through Advaita Vedanta is not about becoming above attachment. It is about seeing attachment with awareness, compassion and skill. It is about letting love become wider without letting care become thinner.

That feels like a path worth walking.

Advaita (meaning “not two”) points towards a truth that separation is an illusion. Something that may appear real… yet is not what it appears to be. People seem separate… stories seem separate… bodies seem separate… yet beneath the whole beautiful mess, Consciousness ItSelf remains undivided.

In everyday relational life, Advaita asks a simple question:

“What happens when Love is treated less like a possession and more like God expressing ItSelf through each form?”

Love as Vibration with Consent as Foundation

Some spiritual traditions speak of truth as something already present, humming under the surface.

Truth feels familiar because the deepest part of Awareness already recognizes it. In that sense, love is a frequency tuned into through attention, care and presence.

Polyamory and Ethical Non-Monogamy can be understood through that same shift in Perspective. Love is already spacious and the heart already knows how to care in multiple directions.

You experience this Truth through your love for friends, partners, chosen kinfolk, children, elders, mentors, ancestors, communities, land, art, music and all those moments that keep life bearable.

The question becomes less “How many people can love include?” and more “Can this love move with clarity, consent and compassion?”

Consent is the ground of polyamory and ENM. Full stop.

Spiritual language becomes dangerous when it floats above consent. Any talk of cosmic unity that skips boundaries turns into nonsense with incense on top.

Advaita invites deep recognition of shared being, and trauma-informed relationship practices invite deep respect for embodied difference.

Both belong together.

A person can be Infinite Consciousness and still experience the desire for a text back through their human expression. A person can be divine in essence and still want to protect their vehicle of consciousness through STI transparency. They still schedule for clarity, require emotional honesty, safer-sex agreements and time to process. A person can rest in non-dual awareness and still say, “That pace feels too fast,” or “This conversation needs more care.”

That is where ethical non-monogamy becomes a spiritual practice rather than romantic chaos. Every agreement becomes a small meditation with each check-in becoming a bell of Awareness.

Every boundary becomes a doorway to your Truth.

For LGBTQIA+ people, gender-expansive people, intersex people, trans people, asexual people, aromantic people, bisexual people, pansexual people, Two-Spirit people and queer people from every cultural background… relational freedom can carry extra meaning. Many have already had to unlearn scripts handed down by family systems, religions, colonial laws, medical gatekeeping and social pressure.

Many already know what it means to ask, “Does this life fit… or was this life assigned?” Polyamory, at a wise pace, can extend that same question into love.

Does this relationship structure fit the actual people involved?
Does this agreement honour real capacity?
Does this bond expand dignity?
Does this practice reduce harm?

No grand speech required. Just honest answers, kindly held.

The Cosmic Dream and the Chapters of Relationship

Advaita often compares life to a dream.

The idea is not that life lacks meaning… but that forms shift, identities shift, roles shift and clinging to any one form as absolute brings suffering.

In love, the dream gets especially sticky.

“Partner.”
“Primary.”
“Anchor.”
“Spouse.”
“Lover.”
“Friend.”
“Date.”
“Meta.”
“Queerplatonic companion.”
“Chosen family.”

These words can help but they can also become little boxes with velvet lining. Comfortable… then cramped.

Advaita teaches every role is a temporary costume worn by Consciousness.

Useful… tender… sometimes sacred… sometimes awkward… and always changing. A person might be a lover in one season, a friend in another, a co-parent in this one and a memory in another.

None of that means the love was false. It means form moved. The resonant frequency shifted and the connection fell out of alignment. Each now vibrates on another thread.

Polyamory can teach this with uncomfortable directness. Multiple relationships reveal that love has many textures. While one bond may feel like warm bread and shared errands… another may feel like poetry and late-night voice notes. Then… as we move through the human experience others may arise who stimulate activism, deep care, mutual accountability and chosen kinship within us. There may be others… sensual, playful, brief… and still respectful. Or spiritual and quietly undefinable.

The mind often wants a ranking system, but the heart prefers a garden.

In a garden, basil does not need to become a rose. Ferns do not compete with mango trees. Each living form grows according to the light, soil, season and care. Ethical non-monogamy, at a mature level, asks each bond what kind of ecosystem helps life flourish.

This is where trauma-informed practice matters. Some nervous systems learnt love through abandonment. Some learnt love through control. Others learnt desire through secrecy or connection through survival.

When polyamory opens space, old fear may rise like shifting weather.

Jealousy, panic, numbness, comparison, shutdown, people-pleasing, fawning, anger, grief… all arrive as part of the narrative in this Neverending Story of Human Experience.

Advaita does not ask anyone to bypass that weather.

Awareness simply notices… fear is arising… tightness is arising.

Longing is arising… a childhood story is arising.

A cultural wound is arising, or a body memory is arising.

Then care can meet that moment.

Maya, Jealousy and Seeing Clearly

Maya is often described as illusion, veil or misperception. In relational life, Maya shows up as the stories that feel absolutely true while the nervous system is activated.

“She gets all the attention.”
“He must mean more.”
“They are replacing me.”
“A new connection is not what we need right now.”
“Desire elsewhere must mean I am not enough.”
“If they love someone else, how will they love me?”

These thoughts can feel like thunder and many know that chest-tight, stomach-dropping, doom-scrolling flavor of relational fear.

The point is neither to shame jealousy nor romanticize it. Jealousy is information that reveals unmet needs, unclear agreements, old grief, social conditioning or past trauma asking for care.

Advaita adds another layer: the self that feels threatened is often a constructed identity trying to survive. A role that feels endangered or a story feels unstable. The image of being “the only one”, “the chosen one”, “the central one” or “the secure one” begins to wobble.

That confusion can hurt.

Yet beneath the discomfort, Awareness remains.

Awareness can hold jealousy without becoming jealousy.

Awareness can hold comparison without becoming comparison.

And Awareness can hold longing without turning longing into accusation.

Polyamory practiced well is not about being above emotion but becoming honest enough to sit with emotion until wisdom returns.

Scarcity has been baked into many social conditions… limited safety, limited recognition, limited family acceptance, limited healthcare access, limited dating pools in some places, limited models of loving openly.

When scarcity is identified with the mind, another person receiving love can feel like danger.

Ethical non-monogamy rooted in Advaita gently asks… can love be experienced as field rather than ration? Can connection be felt as abundance while still naming very real limits around time, energy, disability, money, childcare, housing, immigration, race, caste, class and community safety?

This is important.

Spiritual talk about abundance can become flat when material realities get ignored.

A Black queer single parent or a disabled trans elder… a bisexual migrant, a Indigenous Two-Spirit organizer and a white urban professional may all approach non-monogamy through very different stakes. Access, safety, social cost and community accountability vary widely.

So this practice needs humility.

No single polyamory template fits everyone. Kitchen table polyamory, parallel polyamory, solo polyamory, relationship anarchy, hierarchical arrangements, non-hierarchical arrangements, queerplatonic networks, kink-informed dynamics, long-distance webs, culturally rooted family structures… each can be ethical when consent, clarity and care are alive.

Forms differ but essence is shared.

Dreams Within Dreams

Reincarnation can be read literally, symbolically or poetically. In relationship work, it offers a useful metaphor… patterns repeat until awareness enters.

A person may date the same emotional pattern in five different outfits. The unavailable artist. The rescuer. The chaotic charmer. The silent avoider. The sweet soul who agrees to everything then disappears inside resentment. The person who confuses intensity with intimacy. The person who says “flow” when accountability is needed. The person who says “logic” when tenderness is needed.

This is a dream within a dream.

Polyamory can multiply mirrors that can be beautiful and confronting.

With more relational data, patterns become harder to miss. Does avoidance appear with every partner after vulnerability? Does jealousy surge only when plans shift? Does desire bloom in novelty then fade during steadiness? Does caretaking become a way to earn belonging? Does spiritual language appear when apology would be cleaner?

Advaita says liberation comes through seeing. Simple, brutal, merciful seeing.

Seeing does not require self-hatred as growth lands better through warmth. Shame tends to freeze people, and accountability tends to move them.

This is where ethical non-monogamy becomes a classroom of awakening. Every partner, metamour, friend and community member becomes part of a wider mandala. Some people bringing joy… others bringing irritation. There will be those with erotic electricity… and those who share practical steadiness. you may experience lessons that sting but know that each encounter can reveal where consciousness is still contracted around fear.

The goal is not to become perfectly chill. That phrase often hides emotional suppression. A more human goal is becoming available to truth with less defensiveness.

A good check-in can become meditation.
A repair conversation can become prayer.
A boundary can become compassion in plain clothes.
A breakup can become a respectful bow to form changing.
A new relationship can become a practice in honesty rather than escape.

Within Advaita, the soul moves through many dreams until awakening recognises the dreamlike nature of every identity. In polyamory, the heart may move through many relational forms until love becomes less fused with ownership and more aligned with presence.

That does not mean everyone needs multiple partners. Ethical non-monogamy is one path, not a universal prescription. Monogamy can also be conscious, expansive, queer, sacred and free when chosen honestly.

The key is choice.

The key is awareness.

The key is love free from coercion.

Waking Up Together, One Honest Conversation at a Time

A common spiritual idea says life is a dream unworthy of endless tears. That can sound cold at first glance. Yet there is a softer reading… pain deserves care… and suffering grows when temporary forms are treated as final truth.

Relationships change just as bodies change or desire changes. Capacity changes with the seasons of life and labels once identified with shift. Family structures evolve. Change is the one constant in this life.

The person who once felt central may become peripheral. A connection that once felt casual may become profound. A lover may become kinfolk, or a partner may become a friend.

And that friendship may become the most stable love in the whole constellation.

When everything changes, what remains?

Awareness. Compassion. The chance to act with integrity right now.

Advaita Vedanta invites a radical relaxation of grasping. Ethical non-monogamy invites radical honesty about love in motion. Together, they ask for a heart brave enough to care deeply without expectations of outcome.

This does not mean being casual with feelings. It means reducing the grip of control and letting love breathe. it means allowing each person to remain a living mystery to be continuously discovered, rather than a role assigned for emotional security.

Consciousness shines through every body, every tongue, every gender, every shade of skin and every path of longing.

Mature practice honors all levels.

Polyamory through Advaita is about dissolving the illusion that love can be owned or possessed.

That is the invitation.

To wake up inside the dream.
To love without turning people into possessions and honor difference without forgetting unity.
To make room for queer joy, trans dignity, intersex autonomy, asexual clarity, bisexual fullness, disabled access, racial justice, cultural specificity and the holy ordinariness of people being people.

The cosmos may be a dream of Consciousness, vast and shimmering, unfolding through light, matter, bodies, names and stories.

Still, inside this dream, kindness counts.

Consent, repair, pleasure, rest… truth… They all count.

Awakening is not some faraway peak. Awakening happens at the kitchen table when someone takes a breath and says the real thing despite the feelings of Fear, Shame or Guilt. It happens in a group chat where reassurance comes before panic spirals or when chosen family gathering and nobody has to shrink.

It happens when love is allowed to move as love naturally moves… spacious, honest, diverse, embodied and free.

We learn it at home. We pick it up from culture and religion. We absorb it through fear, heartbreak, and whatever it took to make it through systems that were never built to fit everyone.

Those systems have often refused space for queer and trans bodies, disabled and neurodivergent bodies, chosen families, sacred friendships, soft men, masculine women, non-binary tenderness, asexual intimacy… any love that doesn’t follow the usual script.

After a while, habit starts posing as reality.

We begin to treat these ideas as facts:

Love has to look one way.
Commitment has to follow one structure.
Jealousy means danger.
Desire means betrayal.
Security means control.
A relationship has to be owned to count.
A body has to be available to prove devotion.
A partner has to shrink so someone else can feel safe.

Then Advaita Vedanta shows up and asks a sharper question:

What if many of these limits were learned inside the dream?

That question can loosen the grip as Advaita points to Conscious Awareness as the ground beneath every thought, feeling, label, memory and longing. Put simply, Awareness is the open space where your whole life appears.

Jealousy appears.
Tenderness appears.
Fear appears.
The need for reassurance appears.
The pull toward freedom appears.
The pull toward closeness appears.

None of it is outside awareness. All of it moves through.

This is where polyamory and ethical non-monogamy can act like a mirror. When love expands, the tight places show. Old attachment wounds rise. Scarcity thinking gets loud and the places where your worth became tied to being chosen, claimed, centered or prioritized can surface fast.

That can be a lot so the practice has to be gentle.

Trauma-informed love starts with respect for the nervous system. Nobody should be rushed into some idea of spiritual maturity. Nobody should be shamed for fear. Nobody should be told to “just transcend” jealousy, insecurity, grief or old pain.

The body remembers just as the heart has a history.
The mind learned protection for a reason.

Advaita doesn’t ask you to deny what you feel. It helps you hold it with more room.

Instead of “This fear is the truth,” you can learn, “Fear is here right now.”

Instead of “This jealousy defines the relationship,” you can learn, “Jealousy needs care, clarity and reassurance.”

Instead of “Love must be controlled to be safe,” you can learn, “Safety can grow through honesty, consent, clear agreements and presence.”

A lot of suffering comes from mistaking the dream for the whole of reality.

The dream says love is scarce. Awareness says love can take many shapes.

The dream says connection must be ranked. Awareness says every bond has its own feel.

The dream says possession equals security. Awareness says presence rests deeper than possession ever will.

The dream says the body must perform to earn affection. Awareness says the body deserves consent, patience and care.

The dream says identity must be defended at any cost. Awareness says identity can be honored while the deeper Self stays wide.

This matters for LGBTQ+ and diverse communities, because many people have already had to fight to be seen.

Many have had their love questioned.
Their family structures judged.
Their names disrespected.
Their pronouns ignored.
Their cultures misunderstood.
Their gender policed.
Their bodies fetishized.
Their boundaries crossed.
Their tenderness treated as suspicious.

So when expanded love meets Advaita, the work has to stay grounded. Spiritual language should create more dignity, more consent and more room for real people living real lives.

“Simple living,” in this sense, isn’t about having less as a badge. It’s about dropping the extra layers of performance.

Less pretending.
Less chasing status.
Less proving worth by being desired.
Less measuring love through possession.
Less turning partners into trophies.
Less confusing control with commitment.

More of what feeds you.

More honesty.
More rest.
More consent.
More clear agreements.
More emotional responsibility.
More community care.
More room for each person to breathe.

In Advaita, freedom grows as attachment softens but freedom isn’t indifference. It isn’t emotional distance and it isn’t floating above human need.

Freedom is loving with open hands.

A relationship can be cherished without turning into a cage. One can be loved deeply while being recognized as whole. A connection can be sacred without becoming ownership.

This is where ethical non-monogamy can become more than a label and become a practice.

Agreements become a daily meditation.
Check-ins become a mirror.
Boundaries become care in action.
Jealousy becomes a signal to listen inward.
Compersion becomes a glimpse of love without scarcity.
Hard conversations become another chance to wake up.

And still: the practical pieces matter.

People need food and sleep.
People need emotional safety.
People need consent.
People need communication.
People need time to process.
People need room to change.
People need loving accountability.
People need relationships that respect nervous systems, histories, bodies, cultures, genders, and capacity.

Advaita never asks you to abandon your humanity.

It asks you to remember.

Beneath the story, awareness is whole.

Before “partner,” “spouse,” “lover,” “friend,” “nesting partner,” “comet,” “anchor,” “metamour,” or “chosen family,” Awareness is already here.

Before fear says, “This connection may disappear,”… Awareness is here.
Before desire says, “This person completes everything,”… Awareness is here.
Before shame says, “This way of loving is too much,”… Awareness is here.

That Awareness is the deeper home.

From that place, love gets less frantic.

Connection can still be passionate.
Commitment can still be serious.
Agreements can still be clear.
Boundaries can still be firm.
Feelings can still be big.
Desire can still be holy.
Romance can still feel electric.

The difference is that love can breathe.

No one has to become an object.
No one has to become a possession.
No one has to become proof of worth.

Each person becomes a doorway into presence.

A reminder that the same awareness looking through one set of eyes is also looking through many.

Different bodies.
Different genders.
Different cultures.
Different histories.
Different needs.
Different ways of loving.

One field of consciousness, moving through countless forms.

Polyamory, practiced with care, can show that love was never a small room.

Ethical non-monogamy, practiced with honesty, can show that freedom and devotion can sit at the same table.

Advaita Vedanta, lived gently, can show that beneath every relationship structure, every longing, every fear and every name, one quiet truth remains:

Awareness is whole.

From that wholeness, love can be wide enough to hold truth, tenderness, desire, difference, accountability and freedom… at the same time.

There are some dates that hold memory, movement and the weight of millions of lived experiences.

May 17 is one of those days.

Today marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia… widely known as IDAHOBIT… and every year it arrives with the reminder that visibility, dignity and human connection still matter deeply in people’s everyday lives.

For some, this day looks like marches, public gatherings, rainbow flags, speeches, music and community events filled with warmth and celebration.

For others, it arrives much more subtly.

A shared post… a careful conversation. A message sent privately to someone who needs encouragement or asmall act of reassurance that says “you are safe with me”.

Solidarity deserves attention too.

Many LGBTQIA+ people around the world, simply existing openly still requires emotional energy, personal courage and trust in the people around them.

And perhaps that is why May 17 continues to resonate so strongly. It centres something profoundly human… the need to be seen fully and treated with dignity.

The History Behind May 17

The origins of IDAHOBIT trace back to a significant moment in modern history.

On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases.

That decision marked an important shift in global understanding around identity, mental health and human dignity. It helped create space for broader conversations rooted in respect, care and recognition of LGBTQIA+ lives.

Progress rarely arrives in one sweeping moment.

Social change tends to move gradually, shaped by countless conversations, personal stories and individuals willing to speak honestly about their experiences. The significance of May 17 rests partly in what it symbolizes… a collective willingness to rethink harmful assumptions and move toward greater understanding.

Since then, IDAHOBIT has grown into a global day of awareness observed in more than 130 countries. Communities mark the occasion in different ways depending on culture, local realities and personal safety. Some events are large and highly visible. Others are behind closed doors among trusted friends and chosen family.

Both matter.

Human connection does not become meaningful only when it is public. Some of the most important forms of support happen privately, through listening, reassurance and consistent kindness offered without fanfare.

Why Visibility Matters So Much

Visibility is often discussed in broad social terms, though its impact can feel intensely personal.

For many people growing up LGBTQIA+, one of the hardest experiences is the feeling of isolation. It can appear in various ways… hearing jokes that make openness feel risky, sitting silently during conversations about relationships, avoiding certain topics around family members or carrying the exhausting sense that parts of yourself need to remain hidden.

Visibility helps soften that isolation.

A young person who feels accepted at school may carry that confidence into adulthood. An employee who feels safe being themselves at work may experience greater wellbeing and stability.

Someone receiving compassionate healthcare without fear of dismissal or hostility may finally feel able to seek support they have needed for years.

The ripple effects matter enormously.

And visibility is not solely about being seen by others. It is also about allowing people to see themselves reflected in the world around them with dignity and humanity intact.

It often has very little to do with grand gestures.

Compassion lives comfortably inside everyday interactions:

• using someone’s chosen name,

🕉️ In La’ketch Ala Ka’in 🕉️

I’ve often found that these moments arrive through grief, rejection, burnout… or that nagging feeling that even when things appear fine on the outside… something stirs beneath those surface level interactions as we move from one experience to the next.

We spend years crafting identities.

We become the successful one… the wounded one, the desirable one… the overlooked one, the achiever… the healer… the rebel. We wear these identities so long that they begin to feel permanent.

Advaita Vedanta prompts us to ask ourselves…

“What if the self you defend so fiercely isn’t your true self at all?”

“What if much of human suffering stems not from life itself… but from mistaken identity?”

This is where the ancient dialogue between Ātman and Ahamkara begins.

Ātman: Self Beneath the Story

At the heart of Advaita Vedanta lies the concept of Ātman.

Now, this isn’t merely “soul” in the conventional Western sense… nor is it personality, emotion or memory. Ātman refers to the unchanging essence of your true self. Ātman is pure awareness.

It is the silent witness behind every thought you’ve ever had.

Before you say:

“I am, a parent,”
“I am, anxious,”
“I am, successful,”
“I am, broken,”

“I am,” is Conscious Awareness of Being.

That presence…before Thought… is Ātman.

It does not age when the body ages.
It does not diminish when status falls.
It does not fracture when relationships end.

Ātman is eternal, untouched and indivisible. Advaita teaches that Ātman is not separate from Brahman… the infinite universal consciousness that underlies all existence.

Your deepest self is not merely part of the Divine. It is Divine.

The individual self, at its core, is identical with ultimate reality.

That’s a bold claim, isn’t it? Yet countless sages have insisted this realization is experiential.

The problem is that most of us are too distracted by the noise of Ahamkara to notice.

Ahamkara: Ego That Builds the Illusion

Ahamkara is often translated as “ego,” though that word can be a bit simplistic.

More accurately, Ahamkara means “the I-maker.”

It is the psychological mechanism responsible for constructing personal identity.

Ahamkara says:

“I am this body.”
“I am my profession.”
“I am my trauma.”
“I am my achievements.”
“I am what others think of me.”

It creates the narrative self… the story-bound version of who we believe ourselves to be.

Now, ego in this sense isn’t inherently evil. Advaita doesn’t treat Ahamkara as some demonic force to be eradicated. Rather, it’s a functional tool for navigating the material world. You need some degree of identity to fill out forms, maintain relationships and remember where you parked the car.

The trouble begins when we mistake this temporary construct for our essential nature. That’s where suffering enters. With Ahamkara being built upon impermanent things, it is perpetually vulnerable.

Bodies age and careers shift. Relationships change. Public approval evaporates and even cherished beliefs can collapse.

And so the ego lives in fear.

It seeks validation relentlessly because, at its core, it senses its own instability. This is why so much of modern life feels like a never-ending performance.

We chase recognition, affection, status and control. The ego is trying desperately to secure itself in a world where nothing external can provide lasting certainty.

Ahamkara keeps asking:

“Am I enough?”
“Do they still love me?”
“Have I succeeded?”
“Do I matter?”

And beneath all of these questions is one primal plea:

“Do you still want me?”

The Real Source of Human Longing

Much of what we call desire is, in fact, spiritual amnesia. The ego searches outside for what can only be realized within.

We seek love from others because we have forgotten our innate wholeness.
We chase achievement because we confuse accomplishment with being.
We fear rejection because we identify with transient forms rather than eternal awareness.

The ego’s hunger is not truly for romance, applause or power. It is a distorted search for reunion with Source… like a wave panicking over its shape while forgetting it is made entirely of ocean. A wave that believes itself separate will fear disappearance. A wave that remembers its nature as water understands that while form changes, essence remains.

Likewise, when we identify solely as body, personality or social role… fear becomes inevitable.

But when identity shifts to Ātman, fear begins to dissipate.

Self-Inquiry… The Radical Turning Point

Advaita Vedanta doesn’t merely ask us to believe these teachings… but to investigate directly.

This practice is called Ātma-vichāra, or self-inquiry.

At first glance, the questions seem deceptively simple:

Who am I?
What in me is unchanging?
What observes my thoughts?
Who is aware of my emotions?

But these questions are dynamite when pursued sincerely.

Eventually, one notices something extraordinary:

Thoughts come and go.
Emotions rise and fall.
Roles evolve.
Beliefs shift.

Yet awareness itself remains.

The witness does not change, even as the content of experience changes constantly. This is the doorway to recognising Ātman… and this recognition can be deeply unsettling for the ego.

Why?

Because Ahamkara survives by maintaining identification with form. When one begins to observe rather than automatically believe the ego’s narratives, the illusion weakens.

The seeker may realise:

“I am not my fear.”
“I am not my social mask.”
“I am not my past.”
“I am not the endless voice in my head.”

That doesn’t mean these things vanish overnight but they lose their absolute authority.

An Inner Upanishad

The ego asks:

“Am I still worthy?”
“Do I still belong?”
“Will I be abandoned?”

And the deeper Self answers:

“You were never separate.”

That, in essence, is the healing. The Self does not need to “accept” the ego in the way one person accepts another. Ātman is the very ground from which Ahamkara arises.

The ego’s pain is born from forgetfulness. Its suffering stems from believing itself isolated. But separation, is illusion.

Tat Tvam Asi… “Thou Art That.”

You are not apart from ultimate reality. You are an expression of it.

This teaching doesn’t inflate personal identity into grandiosity. Quite the opposite. It dissolves the small self altogether and, in that dissolution… genuine peace emerges.

Why This Matters in Everyday Life

Now, all of this can sound wonderfully lofty, but what does it mean when you’re dealing with ordinary modern chaos… work stress, relationship struggles, insecurity or disappointment?

Quite a lot, actually. When fear arises, Vedanta encourages us to ask:

Is this my true Self speaking?
Or is this conditioned ego seeking reassurance?

That pause can be transformational.

For instance:

If someone rejects you, Ahamkara may scream:

“I am unworthy.”

But Ātman remains untouched.

If success fades, ego may panic:

“I am nothing without achievement.”

Yet Awareness ItSelf remains whole.

If ageing occurs, ego may despair:

“I am losing myself.”

But the Self was never the body to begin with.

This perspective creates spaciousness around suffering.

One can still grieve, love, strive and participate fully in life… without becoming entirely imprisoned by transient identities.

This often leads to greater emotional resilience and reduced dependence on external validation. Deeper inner peace, more authentic relationships and freedom from compulsive self-performance.

Liberation Is Remembrance

One of the most beautiful aspects of Advaita is that liberation is not framed as self-improvement. You do not become divine through effort. You remember that you have never been anything else.

Modern culture often treats spiritual growth like another achievement ladder… meditate harder, heal faster… optimize your consciousness.

But Advaita instructs the seeker…

Stop striving. Look!
Notice what has always been present.

The Self is not something to manufacture as it is what remains when illusion falls away. We are conditioned to believe peace must be earned. Looking beyond Maya…peace is uncovered.

The Final Truth

Ego says: “I need to be chosen.”

Self knows: “I am already whole.”

Ego says: “I fear loss.”

Self knows: “Nothing real can be lost.”

Ego says: “I am separate.”

Self knows: “I am.”

To awaken is to see clearly through the illusion of fragmentation.

Stop begging the world to complete what was never incomplete.

Returning Home to the Self

I think many of us spend years chasing reflections of home in people, achievements, ideologies or possessions. While these pursuits can hold beauty… they often cannot answer the deepest ache within.

You are not merely the character in the story. You are the awareness in which the story unfolds.

This doesn’t mean abandoning individuality or pretending life’s challenges vanish. It means engaging life from a deeper seat of truth. Not escaping the human experience… but seeing through its illusions while remaining fully present within it.

So when the inner voice trembles and asks:

“Do You still want me?”

May The Self answer with timeless clarity:

“I have never been separate from you.”

When questions first surfaced around Psilomethoxin just ahead of our Entheogenesis wisdom festival, the atmosphere shifted almost overnight. A published article challenged the legitimacy of our sacrament and, for many people watching from the sidelines, that seemed enough to settle the matter. Some members of the community drifted away quietly. Others stayed rooted. Many reached out with generosity, encouragement, and an unwavering sense that there was more to the story than a headline could capture.

Since then, the conversation around Psilomethoxin has lived in two worlds at once. There was the lived experience… deeply personal, embodied, transformative for many participants… and there was the demand for rigorous scientific validation. For a while, those worlds appeared to move at different speeds.

Now, fresh data has brought them closer together.

Over the past two years, Sacred Synthesis co-founder Ian Benouis dedicated himself to finding scientific evidence capable of standing beside the experiences so many in the community already knew intimately. According to the analysis, the molecular fingerprint observed in the sacrament aligned with what researchers would expect from Psilomethoxin. The molecular weight matched the predicted weight within only a few parts per million, which in analytical chemistry is extraordinarily precise. The fragmentation pattern… the smaller molecular pieces produced during testing… also aligned with the expected structure.

For many people in the Sacred Synthesis community, this moment feels significant in a very human way. Over the years, participants described experiences that felt emotionally vivid, spiritually meaningful, and at times profoundly life-altering. Joseph Goldstein frames compassion like a practice…. something lived, tested and returned to again and again.

In his longtime friendship with Ram Dass, you can feel that shared ground. Bhakti meets Buddhist insight, heart meets awareness and somewhere in the middle there’s a lot of laughter keeping it all human.

Goldstein poses a question that lingers… are we actually willing to open to suffering?

Not in theory.

In real time

In the body… in the chest… in the subtle tightening that happens when something uncomfortable shows up. Compassion begins right there, in that moment where we feel the urge to turn away. It asks for something simple and demanding at the same time… come closer.

The Dalai Lama once said compassion and love are simple… and hard to practice.

Most of us have the intention. The heart leans in that direction. Then life happens… pain, overwhelm, the constant stream of headlines… and something in us pulls back.

There’s a familiar reflex:

“Don’t let this in.”

Goldstein tells that story about Pearl Harbor, where a grandfather’s first response was, “Don’t tell your mother.” The instinct to protect and filter… to soften the blow. On some level, we all do it. We manage reality in small ways so it doesn’t press too hard against the heart.

Watch closely next time discomfort shows up.

Physical pain, emotional tension or a difficult experience to witness. Notice the first reaction. It’s often resistance dressed up in different forms… distraction, numbness… even subtle indifference

The heart knows how to open… but the mind is very skilled at keeping things at a distance.

And then there’s the world itself.

Images, stories, crises… an endless stream that can feel like too much.

The question becomes personal… how do we meet this without shutting down?

The poet Mary Oliver captures this distance clearly.

News of suffering often feels like it’s happening “two counties north”… somewhere abstract… somewhere removed. The mind files it away as distant. The heart stays calm, untouched.

And yet, there’s that line: except as we have loved, all news arrives as from a distant land.

Love brings things close.

It dissolves that sense of “over there.” Compassion grows in that same space.

It doesn’t require us to carry the whole world at once. It asks for presence, for sincerity and for a willingness to feel what’s here without turning away.

The one who witnesses suffering and the suffering itself arise in the same field of awareness.

The boundary feels real and it softens as attention rests more fully in that awareness. Compassion then flows less like an effort and more like a natural expression of what you are.

So… when suffering appears… yours or someone else’s… can you let it in, just a little more than before?

That’s the work.

A man rides on a bicycle, pedalling through the gentle streets of Basel, spring air brushing past his face, the world shifting in ways he could scarcely have imagined.

It feels almost cinematic, yet entirely real. Every 19th of April, I find myself returning to that moment in 1943, when Albert Hofmann… Swiss chemist, meticulous and curious… took what would become the most famous bicycle ride in scientific history.

We now call it Bicycle Day, and while the name carries a certain lightness, the story beneath it holds remarkable weight.

Hofmann had synthesised LSD years earlier, tucked away among other compounds, its potential unknown. On that April afternoon, driven by instinct and a scientist’s persistent curiosity, he deliberately ingested a small dose. What followed unfolded not in a sterile laboratory, but along the cobbled roads of Basel, as he cycled home with reality bending, colours intensifying and perception stretching into unfamiliar territory.

I often think about that ride as a moment where the boundaries of human understanding expanded. Bicycle Day has since grown into a kind of cultural marker, a nod to the beginning of modern psychedelic exploration.

Over the decades, LSD and related substances have woven their way through science, art, psychology and counterculture. Researchers have examined their effects on consciousness, artists have drawn inspiration from their perceptual shifts and entire movements have found language within the experiences they evoke.

From today’s vantage point, it feels less like a singular discovery and more like the opening of a door… one that revealed new questions about the mind, perception and the nature of reality itself.

Studies continue to explore therapeutic applications, particularly in mental health contexts, where renewed interest has sparked careful, controlled research. There’s a sense that we’re still in conversation with Hofmann’s discovery, still learning how to understand and integrate its implications.

At the same time, Bicycle Day carries a more reflective tone for many people.

It invites a pause.

A moment to consider how a single act… a decision made in a laboratory, followed by a solitary ride home… can ripple outward through decades. The story reminds me that progress often arrives in unexpected forms, shaped by curiosity and a willingness to engage with the unknown.

In today’s world, where conversations around psychedelics are evolving with care and nuance, Bicycle Day feels like a gentle anchor point. It offers a way to acknowledge the origins of that conversation without losing sight of its complexity.

It’s a reminder that exploration, whether scientific or personal, carries both promise and responsibility.

As I reflect on it this year, I’m struck by the courage embedded in Hofmann’s story. Curiosity guided him, and curiosity continues to guide us. The questions he opened remain alive, shifting and deepening with each generation.

So however the day passes… whether marked with reflection, conversation, or simply a fleeting thought, there’s something worth holding onto.

One bicycle ride, one curious mind and a moment that subtly reshaped how we understand consciousness.

Jack Kornfield shares a teaching from Ajahn Chah, who listened as a monk described years of profound spiritual visions… light, insight and deep understanding.

Ajahn Chah gently smiled and said, “These are like movies.”

Life unfolds in scenes… joy and sorrow, beauty and difficulty… identity and change. Thoughts move, sensations arise, roles shift and stories evolve.

And through it all, Awareness is Present.

Right now, there is hearing, seeing, feeling and thinking.

All of it appears within a field of knowing.

That knowing presence… clear, open, and awake… is what you are.

Ajahn Chah’s invitation was simple… turn attention toward that awareness.

Rest there.

Recognize its steady, spacious nature, like the sky that allows every cloud to pass.

Ram Dass expressed this in his own playful way. When asked about his identity, he said, “I’m only Jewish on my parents’ side.”

A lighthearted answer, pointing to something deeper… identity can be held lightly, appreciated, explored and expressed in many forms.

What remains constant is Awareness ItSelf.

Even as moments arise and dissolve, That Presence continues.

So the question returns…

“I experience myself as incomplete. I strive to become whole.”

The teacher replied:

“That which knows incompleteness… can it itself be incomplete?”

The seeker observed:

“There are thoughts of lack, movements of desire and the sense of becoming.”

The teacher said:

“All these arise and pass before you.

You are that to which they appear.”

The seeker asked:

“Who am I, then, if not this becoming?”

The teacher answered:

“You are awareness… self-luminous, unchanging, without need of attainment.

You do not move toward wholeness. You are wholeness.”

The seeker reflected:

“When I look at the body, judgment arises.”

The teacher said:

“The body is perceived. Judgment is perceived.

That which perceives is untouched.”

The seeker wondered:

“Why then do old patterns return?”

The teacher replied:

“Habit moves within the field of mind.

You are not bound to its movement.

You are the field in which it appears.”

The seeker asked:

“What is to be done?”

The teacher said:

“See clearly.

Abide as the seer.

Let what comes, come. Let what goes, go.”

The seeker became still and said:

“There is completeness here.”

The teacher replied:

“This is your nature. It has never been absent.”

Thus it is known:

The Self is not attained by effort,

nor improved by becoming.

It is revealed in the recognition

that nothing is lacking.

That which you seek to become…

is it not already present

as the one who seeks?

The movement of mind speaks in terms of versions, outcomes and identities. It arranges experience into paths and possibilities.

This has its place within the play of life. Yet beneath this lies Awareness ItSelf.

Before any assumption arises or perception organizes the world, there is a silent self-evident presence.

It does not come and go.

It does not improve or diminish.

It simply is.

This presence is what you are.

In Advaita Vedanta, this is called Atman… The Innermost Self. And this Self is not separate from Brahman, the infinite reality in which all appearances arise.

The seeker, the process of change and the sense of becoming anll unfold within awareness.

They are known.

And that which knows them remains untouched.

The mind may say, “I am becoming someone new.”

Awareness simply illuminates that thought.

The body may move through states of contraction or openness.

Awareness remains as the space in which these states are felt.

Even the sense of identity… the one who tries, chooses or transforms… is an appearance within this field.

When this is realized there is less concern with shaping experience into a particular form. There is a natural curiosity about the one to whom all experience appears.

Who is aware of this moment?

Stay with that. The attention turns back toward its source. Thoughts may arise. Sensations may move. Still, awareness remains unchanged.

In this recognition, life continues.

Actions happen.

Words are spoken.

Choices appear.

The play of individuality carries on,

expressive and alive.

Yet inwardly, there is clarity. Nothing needs to be added for you to be whole. Nothing needs to be removed for you to be complete. The fullness you seek is the very nature of the one who is seeking.

Rest there, even briefly… and notice that Consciousness is already present. It is open, boundless and at ease.

This is your natural state.

Pause for a moment. Bring to mind one person… just one… whom you trust deeply.
One who is sincere, conscientious and noble in intention. Hold this person gently in your awareness.

This friendship has divine potential.

As a wise father once responded to a heartbroken teen:
“There are so few friends I can trust.”
“Precious, aren’t they?”

Yes, they are.

Now ask: How can I elevate this friendship into divine love?

1. Acceptance, The Foundation of Love.

We all long to be accepted… not judged, fixed or measured. True acceptance is spiritual endurance. It is the strength to remain open-hearted through moods, storms and imperfections.

As Jesus taught:

“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

To love as the Divine loves means:

• Accepting them as they are right now

• Remaining steady through life’s changing conditions

• Offering a deep, unwavering sympathy

Right now, in your heart… accept your friend completely.

2. Belief, Seeing Their Divine Potential

To love someone deeply is to believe in who they are becoming. Human friendship shares life… Divine friendship shares destiny.

Ask them:

“How can I pray for you?”

This simple question opens a doorway. When someone shares their dreams, you are standing on holy ground… the voice of their soul.

Reflect:

• Do you know their dreams?

• Have you shared your own?

Pray for their highest aspirations. In doing so, your love becomes a channel for God’s will.

3. Appreciation, Awakening the Divine in Them.

To appreciate someone is to call forth their highest self.

Begin with one virtue:

• Name it

• Feel it

• Acknowledge it

When you recognize a virtue, you help it grow.

Also embrace:

• Their uniqueness

• Their differences

• Their perfections

Ask yourself honestly:

• Can I forgive them as I forgive myself?

• Can I defend them when they are misunderstood?

• Can I be the one who reconciles?

Divine love does not withdraw… it expands.

4. Respect for Free Will, Sacred Ground.

Every soul is a Expression of God, endowed with freedom.

To interfere with another’s free will is to step onto sacred ground uninvited. You will recognize instantly, they become defensive. This is your signal to
pause, reflect and realign.

Divine love does not control… it does not manipulate… it does not possess

Divine Love invites.

True harmony arises when love flows both ways… freely.

A Necessary Truth

Divine love is not passive in the face of harm.

If someone becomes destructive:

• Set boundaries

• Protect yourself

• Seek intervention if needed

God’s love is infinite… but it does not sanction abuse.

5. Presence, The Gift of Being There.

Sometimes, the highest love is simply this:

Be there because you care, with no agenda or attempt to fix. Just share presence.

The Alchemy of Friendship

When you:

• Accept them

• Believe in them

• Appreciate them

• Honor their freedom

• Stay present

Something extraordinary happens… Human love becomes divine love.

Even one such friendship can transform your life.

The Deeper Teaching

Paramahansa Yogananda reminds us:

“Friendship is the purest form of God’s love because it is born of the heart’s free choice.”

True friends never truly part.
Even when outwardly separated, love remains anchored in the Divine.

Because ultimately:

It is not the person you love…
It is God loving through them.

If God were loving your friend through you…
what would change in how you love them today?
