Killings, kidnappings, and violent raids by criminal gangs persisted across the Northwest, with Zamfara State recording 1,203 abductions in a single year. The authorities have consistently failed to protect communities or hold perpetrators accountable. Meanwhile, the government has poured billions of naira into rehabilitating the very people responsible for this carnage. Operation Safe Corridor, launched in 2016, has reintegrated nearly 10,000 former Boko Haram fighters into society. Borno State alone reported that about 9,680 ex-fighters had passed through the programme. Some of these “repentant” individuals have returned to terrorist groups and led attacks months after graduation.

The situation has become even more alarming with reports that repentant Boko Haram fighters are being integrated into the Nigerian military. At least 40 former insurgents sponsored by the Borno State government were reportedly shortlisted for the Nigerian Army’s 91st Regular Recruits Intake, undergoing medical examinations at a military hospital in Maiduguri. Soldiers on the front lines have expressed deep unease, fearing that the arrangement could expose military operations to intelligence leaks and compromise ongoing efforts against insurgent groups. One soldier stated: “You can see how these Boko Haram fighters have been killing our commanders. That should tell you there is a leak in information about their movements. Yet the government is asking us to trust these people and work with them. It won’t work”. Senator Adams Oshiomhole put it bluntly: “It does not make even common sense to grant pardon, rehabilitate and reintegrate criminals”. The Senate itself has called on the Federal Government to discontinue the policy.

May 3, 2025 — In Ngoshe community, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, Boko Haram kidnapped 416 women and children. Four hundred and sixteen human beings ripped from their homes in a single day.

May 15, 2025 — In Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, armed men stormed three schools: Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and L.A. Primary School. They took 46 people—7 teachers and 39 students. One teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded while in captivity. A 2-year-old toddler, Christianah Akanbi, was among the victims.

May 15, 2025 (same day) — In Askira Uba Local Government Area, Borno State, suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School. They abducted between 42 and 50 schoolchildren. The federal government sent helicopters and high-level delegations to Oyo. To Borno? Almost nothing. A nearly N10 million consolation prize was handed to traditional rulers and nothing else. Some lives are apparently worth more than others.

May 23, 2025 — In the same Oriire LGA, Oyo State, another wave of attacks. Armed assailants invaded Community High School and Yawota Baptist School, kidnapping more pupils, students, and teachers. One teacher was reportedly killed while in captivity. Many of the children were between ages 3 and 16.

November 16, 2025 — In Maga, Kebbi State, gunmen invaded Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School at around 4:00 am. They killed the vice principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, and abducted 25 schoolgirls.

November 21, 2025 — In Papiri village, Niger State, armed bandits stormed St. Mary's Catholic School. They kidnapped 303 students and 12 teachers. Some of the children were as young as 5 years old.

And these are just the mass school kidnappings. This doesn't include the countless individuals—farmers, traders, travelers—vanishing daily across the country.

Do you know what the president is doing?

He is sleeping.

No, I'm not being funny. I'm not being abusive. I'm stating a fact. The man sleeps. Our leaders sleep. They sleep in their air-conditioned bedrooms while children are being raped in the bushes. They sleep while mothers count the days since their daughters disappeared. They sleep while the fathers of those innocent children sell their life works just to bring home corpses.

Between July 2023 and June 2024 alone, at least 7,568 people were kidnapped in 1,130 cases across the country. Kidnappers demanded approximately ₦11 billion in ransom. They received at least ₦1 billion. The Nigerian senate outlawed ransom payments in 2022. Made abduction punishable by death. Has any of that stopped anything?

The Quiet Ones

The Oyo kidnappings made national headlines. Helicopters landed. Delegations visited. The National Security Adviser showed up with the Chief of Staff and the Minister of Defense. But in Borno, after 416 people were taken from Ngoshe? Silence. After 42 schoolchildren were taken from Askira Uba? More silence.

A civil society leader in Borno put it plainly: "This doesn't demonstrate that the federal government is treating victims equally".

He's right. And we all know why. Some parts of this country are treated like they don't exist until the cameras show up.

The Truth

I'm not going to end this with prayer. I don't believe in that anymore. I don't believe in the men in power, and I don't believe in a God who watches children get slaughtered and does nothing. Faith is a luxury for people who haven't buried their daughter after paying ransom.

The Catholic Church was a primary engine and an active, willing participant in the enslavement of millions of African people. From the very top—the Vatican itself, the highest seat of so-called moral authority on Earth—issued the decrees that made the entire horror morally acceptable to Christian Europe. I want you to understand this wasn't a mistake. It wasn't a few bad priests. It was the official, written, blessed policy of the papacy for centuries. The Church, as an institution, will forever have the blood of millions on its hands, and no amount of modern hand-wringing can wash it clean.

It all started in the 15th century, with the stroke of a papal pen. In 1452, Pope Nicholas V issued the papal bull Dum Diversas, a formal decree that gave the Catholic King of Portugal, Afonso V, his official blessing to "invade, search out, capture, and subjugate the Saracens and pagans and any other unbelievers and enemies of Christ wherever they may be" and, explicitly, "to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery". Now, let's bring this down to the ground. Let's talk about what this actually meant for real people. The Church's official blessing gave cover for the physical machinery of the trade. Catholic missionaries accompanied slave-hunting expeditions. But the involvement of the Catholic Church went far beyond simply blessing the trade. The Church became one of the largest slave-owning institutions in the Western Hemisphere. For centuries, Catholic religious orders like the Jesuits, the Dominicans, the Carmelites, and the Ursulines owned thousands of human beings across the Americas, particularly in Brazil and the Caribbean. They operated massive plantations staffed entirely by enslaved labor. They bought and sold people with the same dispassion as any other merchant, using the profits to build their universities, their grand cathedrals, and their power.

The most documented and damning example of this happened in the United States. In the 19th century, the Jesuit priests who ran Georgetown University were deep in debt. So, in 1838, they made a decision that reveals the true, cold-blooded nature of their enterprise. They decided to sell the people they had enslaved on their plantations in Maryland to raise money. On June 19, 1838, the Maryland Province of Jesuits signed a bill of sale for 272 men, women, and children to two Louisiana sugar planters for $115,000, a sum worth over $3 million in today's money. This transaction was personally orchestrated by Georgetown's president, Father Thomas Mulledy.

And from St. Inigoes, people like Nace Butler, Bibiana Mahoney, Bridget Butler, and Henny Butler were ripped from everything they knew. The Jesuits kept meticulous, bureaucratic records, listing them by name, by family group, and, most chillingly, by which ship they were forced onto for the voyage down the coast to the hell of Louisiana's sugar plantations. The ships were assigned numbers: "1, 2, or 3" in the ledger. They were cargo. And 91 of the 272 were "left behind in Maryland"—a chilling phrase meaning they were likely too young, too old, or too sick to be worth the cost of transport. They were sold, but not even worth the cost of the journey.

We also know about the specific cruelties because the Jesuits wrote them down in letters and ledgers. There was a girl named Suckie. She was enslaved by a Jesuit priest who, as an act of religious penance, would whip himself. One day, young Suckie tried to stop her owner from hurting himself. How did he repay her concern? He "gave her so sound a thrashing, that she was determined never to care much about his self-cruelties in the future" . The violence was reflexive, a tool of control that was never questioned.

And it wasn't just the men. Catholic nuns, women who had taken vows of poverty and charity, were often among the cruelest of owners. The Georgetown Visitation sisters in Washington, D.C., a convent of nuns, owned at least 107 people. For the first time, a pope publicly stated that the Holy See itself intervened to "legitimize forms of subjugation, and, in certain cases, the enslavement of 'infidels'" . He called the Church's centuries-long delay in condemning slavery a "wound in Christian memory" and asked for "pardon". On the surface, it's a historic step.

But you and I know better. This apology is a confession of institutional guilt that also serves as a shield against real justice. It is an acknowledgment of a "wound" they helped inflict, but it is not a concrete plan for reparations. It contains no act of financial restitution. It makes no formal offer to return any of the stolen wealth, property, or artifacts built on the backs of enslaved people. The Church owns hospitals, schools, and universities. Its art collection is one of the most valuable in the world. It has the money. Today’s breed of politician is savvier, more photogenic, and in some ways more dangerous than the strongmen of old, because they have learned to speak the language of the people, but only as a dialect of self-preservation. In Benue, by contrast, the energy, resources, and logistics poured into the charade could have gone into food supplies, temporary shelters, medical aid, and trauma counselling. Instead, the government chose optics over empathy.

What makes this case so damning is that it was not merely performative—it was anti-performative in the worst sense. The performance actively disrespected the victims, turning their deaths into a backdrop for political posturing. Schools were shut down, children were exploited, and grieving families were forced to witness a celebration staged in the shadow of their loss. When the International Organization For Human Rights Development and Environment described the event as “deeply insensitive, tone-deaf, and profoundly disrespectful to the grieving families,” it was not exaggerating.

Conclusion: Break the Applause

We, the electorate, are the audience. And we must stop applauding the performance. Senator Ani’s cooking pots, Governor Fintiri’s oversized cheques, President Tinubu’s agbada-clad carnival—all are variations on the same theme: governance replaced by gestures, accountability substituted with screenshots.

Real activism demands sacrifice. It demands that the powerful become less powerful. A Nigerian politician who genuinely wanted to end poverty would vote to remove the immunity clause that protects their office. They would publish their assets without being forced. They would decentralize the police—not just tweet about SARS. None of this is photogenic. But it is the only thing that works.

The next time you see a politician weeping on television, ask one question: What did they do last month when the cameras were off?

Stop clapping. Start checking the receipts. The curtains will not close on this act until the audience walks out.

There is a special kind of magic that exists in Nigeria. No, it is not the "Can-Do" spirit of Fela or the resilience of the Nnewi mechanic. It is the breathtaking, Olympic-level talent of the Professional Complainer.

Over the last few weeks, the news cycle has been a horror film. Insecurity is gnawing at every corner, from the dusty roads of the North-West where bandits have turned villages into ghost towns, to the South-East where unknown gunmen have made highways a game of Russian roulette. By Sunday morning, as you sipped your tea and scrolled through Twitter, you saw the headlines: more abductions, another attack, a fresh "regret message" from a state government.

And what was the reaction of the "Stubborn Nigerian"?

You logged into WhatsApp. You joined the "Concerned Citizens" group. You typed a five-paragraph essay on how Bola Tinubu, Atiku, or Peter Obi has failed. You lamented about the economy. You broke down the security vote. You analyzed the geopolitical nuances of Aso Rock like you were a visiting professor from Oxford.

But then someone asks you: "Boss, do you have your PVC?"

Silence.

Then the excuses roll in. "Ah, wahala. The INEC office is far." "The sun is too hot." "My village people will rig it anyway." "I am too busy hustling."

Aso Rock is not a cinema.

Let’s be honest. You know more about the internal politics of the Villa than you know about your neighbor’s name. You can tell me the exact date Tinubu traveled to France, the color of the jet Shettima used, and the brand of rice served at the budget defense. You are a detective when it comes to government failure.

But when it comes to the one tool that can actually fire the incompetent or hire the capable, the Permanent Voter’s Card, you are suddenly blind.

The Hypocrisy is deafening.

You will cry that the bandits have taken over the farms. You will wail that the kidnappers are demanding millions. You will hold a town hall meeting in your living room, complete with gesticulations and spittle, blaming the President for "not doing enough."

Yet, when the window opens to get your PVC or transfer it to where you actually live, you are "not moved."

You are the same person who will line up for three hours to buy pounds on the black market. You will camp overnight to get data bundles for a Big Brother finale. But walking to an INEC center to secure the future of your children? "Nah, I’m tired."

Do you hear yourselves?

We want a government that trembles at our anger, but we don't tremble at the ballot box. We want leaders who will fight insecurity with drones and special forces, but we are too fragile to fight the small small insecurity of traffic to the registration center.

If you stay at home during the election because "vote doesn’t count," you have forfeited your right to open your mouth when the country burns. You have lost the moral license to type "God save Nigeria" under a post about a massacre.

The Warning

To the armchair political analyst who knows everything about Aso Rock but owns mba (no) PVC: Shut up.

Seriously. Until you have that green card in your hand, your complaints about insecurity are just background noise. You are not a citizen; you are a spectator. And spectators don't get to coach the team.

We are tired of the hypocrisy. Go and get your PVC. It is the only bulletproof vest against the madness. If you choose to sit at home again, then when the kidnappers come, when the bad governance bites, when the insecurity swallows your street, please, just go inside, lock your door, and keep quiet.

Because you had the power to vote. You just chose to be a "hypocritical Nigerian."

Get your PVC. Vote. Or face the consequences of your silence.

For many people today, changing a surname after marriage is viewed as romantic, respectful, or symbolic of unity. It is presented as proof of love and commitment. However, the historical roots of the practice tell a very different story. The custom emerged primarily from English common law through a legal doctrine known as coverture. Under coverture, a married woman had no independent legal identity separate from her husband. Once married, she became what the law described as a feme covert, meaning her legal existence was effectively absorbed into that of her husband. She could not independently own property, sign contracts, sue in court, or fully control her finances. Her identity in the eyes of the law was “covered” by her husband’s authority.

The changing of a surname was therefore not originally about love or partnership. It functioned as a legal marker of possession and erasure. A woman’s identity shifted from belonging to her father’s household to belonging to her husband’s household. Her name changed because the legal system no longer recognised her as a separate person. This tradition spread widely across colonised societies as European powers imposed their legal systems and cultural norms on the rest of the world. Over time, many colonised people began to see these customs as natural or universal, even though they were rooted in patriarchal legal systems designed to limit women’s autonomy.

When colonial governments established European-style courts, administrative systems, and educational institutions across Africa, they also introduced European family structures and marital expectations. Practices that once belonged to specific European societies became presented as “civilized” standards. Indigenous customs were often dismissed as primitive or inferior. As a result, many African communities slowly absorbed foreign marital traditions into everyday life, including the expectation that a woman should abandon her surname after marriage.

Yet African societies historically understood marriage very differently. Before colonial interference transformed many legal and cultural systems, marriage in numerous African communities was not centred on the erasure of one identity into another. Instead, marriage was often viewed as a union between families, clans, or entire communities. It was not simply the joining of two individuals but the creation of a larger network of kinship, responsibility, and alliance. In these systems, identity was collective and deeply tied to lineage, ancestry, and communal belonging.

Because lineage mattered so deeply, the identity of a woman did not disappear when she married. She remained connected to her birth family and ancestral line. Her role expanded rather than dissolved. She became a bridge between two communities instead of someone absorbed into another person’s identity. In many African cultures, a woman retained her family name, titles, or clan identity even after marriage. Her heritage continued to hold social and cultural significance, and her children were often taught to recognise and honour both sides of their ancestry.

In numerous African naming traditions, children carried visible connections to both parents. While many societies were patrilineal, meaning clan identity primarily followed the father, this did not mean the mother’s lineage became invisible. The mother’s family name, praise name, lineage identity, or ancestral connections remained socially recognised and culturally important. Some children received names from both maternal and paternal families. Others carried names that reflected the histories of both lineages. In oral traditions and genealogies, maternal ancestry was preserved and remembered rather than erased.

This distinction is important because it reveals a fundamentally different understanding of identity. In the European model shaped by coverture, marriage often symbolised absorption: the woman loses her surname, the children inherit only the father’s identity, and within a few generations the maternal ancestral line becomes difficult to trace publicly. In many African systems, however, identity was additive rather than subtractive. Marriage connected lineages instead of erasing one of them. The child represented the union of two histories, two bloodlines, and two communities.

Today, many Africans passionately speak about reclaiming indigenous identity while simultaneously defending customs inherited from colonial systems. There is an inconsistency in rejecting colonial influence in some areas while preserving it unquestioningly in others. People criticise colonial education systems, imported religions, and foreign political structures, yet often treat the practice of surname change after marriage as sacred tradition without investigating its origins. The contradiction becomes even more striking when one considers that many precolonial African societies did not operate according to the same assumptions about women’s identity and legal existence.

Part of the reason this practice survives so strongly is because customs become emotionally embedded over time. What begins as law eventually becomes culture, and what becomes culture is later mistaken for timeless tradition. Many people no longer associate surname change with coverture or legal erasure. Instead, they associate it with family unity, loyalty, and social respectability. Challenging the custom can therefore feel uncomfortable because it forces people to reconsider practices they have long accepted as normal.

However, questioning a tradition does not mean condemning everyone who follows it. The purpose of examining history is not to shame personal choices but to encourage informed decisions. A woman who chooses to adopt her husband’s surname should be free to do so if it genuinely reflects her wishes. But the choice becomes more meaningful when it is made with full awareness of the custom’s historical origins rather than out of unquestioned social expectation.

Likewise, a woman who decides to keep her surname is not rejecting marriage, disrespecting her husband, or abandoning African values. In many ways, she may be acting in closer alignment with older African traditions that recognised women as permanent members of their own lineages even after marriage. Similarly, parents who choose to give children both maternal and paternal names are not creating division; they are acknowledging the equal importance of both ancestral lines and preserving a fuller sense of heritage.

Names are more than labels. They carry memory, ancestry, identity, and history. They tell stories about where people come from and how societies understand belonging. When a name disappears, a piece of history can disappear with it. This is why conversations about surnames are not shallow debates about modern feminism or personal preference alone. They are also discussions about law, colonialism, memory, identity, and cultural continuity.

If societies truly wish to decolonize their thinking, then every inherited practice deserves examination, especially the ones so deeply normalized that they appear invisible. Decolonization is not simply about rejecting foreign influence when convenient. It requires the courage to question traditions that have been accepted for generations and to ask whether they genuinely reflect ancestral values or merely the legacy of imposed systems.

The name we carry matters because it connects us to those who came before us and to those who will come after us. Whether a woman changes her surname, keeps it, combines it, or passes both names to her children should be a conscious decision grounded in knowledge rather than pressure or habit. True freedom lies not in blindly preserving every custom nor in rejecting tradition entirely, but in understanding the history behind our choices and deciding for ourselves which traditions deserve to continue into the future.

One thing many Nigerian women are never taught is that identity is deeply connected to ownership, documentation, and legal recognition. We grow up hearing “Mrs” as a badge of honour, a sign of marriage, respect, and stability. But very few people explain the legal and financial implications attached to that identity, especially when it comes to property ownership.

Under Section 43 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the law clearly states:

“Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, every citizen of Nigeria shall have the right to acquire and own immovable property anywhere in Nigeria.”

This means a married woman has an independent constitutional right to own land and property in her own legal identity. Marriage does not erase that right.

In Nigeria, when a property is purchased and documented carelessly under “Mr and Mrs” without clearly stating the woman’s full legal identity, independent ownership share, or proper co-ownership structure, the law and the system often default toward recognizing the husband as the primary owner. In practice, many women discover too late that the house they helped build financially, emotionally, or physically is not legally protected in their name. In disputes, inheritance battles, divorce, or even after the death of a spouse, vague documentation can become dangerous.

The Married Women’s Property Act further strengthens this protection by stating that a married woman is capable of acquiring, holding, and disposing of property as her separate legal property. In simple terms, the law recognises a married woman as a full legal individual capable of ownership independent of her husband.

This is not about promoting fear or division in marriage. It is about promoting awareness. Love is important, but legal clarity is protection. A woman should never disappear inside paperwork simply because society taught her that sacrifice equals loyalty. Marriage should not erase identity; it should strengthen partnership.

My professional advice to women is simple: always ensure your full legal name appears clearly on every property document, land agreement, deed, mortgage paper, survey, or certificate connected to any investment you contributed to. Do not rely on “Mr and Mrs” as protection. Ask questions. Understand the ownership structure. Use proper legal documentation. If a property is jointly owned, let the percentages and names be explicitly written. Consult a qualified property lawyer before signing anything important.

And to men who truly believe in partnership, transparency should never offend you. A protected woman is not a threat to marriage. She is a secure partner inside it.

We cannot continue teaching women to build homes while denying them legal visibility inside the foundations they helped create.

Every Sunday, millions of young women are told to be "Christian girls." Soft. Submissive. Patient in pain. Waiting on a husband. Smiling through the bruises. Praying away the abuse.

And they use the Bible to do it.

So let me tell you something you won't hear in Chidinma's Bible study with fairy lights and cold brew: Your holy book does not love you. Not the way you think.

Let's start with the Old Testament.

Numbers 5:11–31 – The ordeal of bitter water. A jealous husband can force his wife to drink poison. If she dies? Guilty. If she lives? Innocent. No trial. No evidence. No male equivalent. Just a woman swallowing death because a man felt insecure.

Deuteronomy 22:23–24 – A woman raped in a town but doesn't scream loud enough? Stone her. "She did not cry for help." As if terror follows a decibel rule.

Deuteronomy 22:28–29 – A man rapes a virgin. His punishment? Pay her father fifty shekels and marry her. She belongs to her rapist for life. No choice. No justice. Just a transaction.

Judges 19 – A Levite's concubine is gang-raped all night. She dies on the doorstep. His response? Cut her into twelve pieces and mail her across Israel. Her name? Not recorded. She's just a thing that happened.

Exodus 21:7 – A father can sell his daughter as a slave. Not a son. A daughter.

You want "Christian girl"? That's your heritage. A girl who exists to be sold, raped, tested, and silenced.

Now don't hide behind "that was the Old Testament." Because your Jesus showed up and doubled down.

Matthew 5:17 – "Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come to fulfill them." The same Law that orders rape marriages and stoned women? Jesus says it stands. Every stroke of the pen.

Luke 16:17 – "It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law."

So don't give me grace. Jesus didn't erase a single rape law.

1 Timothy 2:11–15 – "A woman must be quiet and fully submissive. I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man. Adam was formed first, then Eve. Adam was not deceived; the woman was deceived. But women will be saved through childbearing…"

Saved through childbirth? What about women who die in labor? What about barren women? What about women who never marry? Your Bible ties salvation to the pain of the womb and calls that good.

1 Peter 2:18–20 – "Slaves, submit to your masters—not only the good ones but also the harsh ones. It is commendable if you bear up under the pain of unjust suffering."

Now replace "slaves" with "wives." Same structure. Same command. Suffer unjustly. That's commendable to your God.

1 Peter 3:1 – "Wives, submit to your own husbands so that if any do not believe, they may be won over without words by your behavior."

Don't speak. Don't leave. Just bleed in silence. Maybe your pain will convert him. That's the "Christian girl" model.

And while you post your Bible verses with pastel filters, real women are dying.

Afghanistan – Girls banned from school past sixth grade. Women's voices now called awrah—private parts. Zarmina was executed in a stadium for "adultery" after she was raped. Her body displayed. That was 2023.

Nigeria – 276 Chibok girls kidnapped. Many still missing. Leah Sharibu, a child, held for four years because she refused to renounce her faith. The church? Posted hashtags.

DRC – Mass rape as a weapon of war. The church says "forgive" while women's pelvises shatter.

India – Nirbhaya, gang-raped on a bus and murdered. Her church told her family to pray for the rapists' souls.

Pakistan – Asia Bibi, nine years on death row for blasphemy. Her "crime"? Offering water. Christian men hid. Christian women died.

Iran – Mahsa Amini, 22, beaten to death for "improper hijab." Her last word: "My ear, my ear." September 2022. The global church? Posting reels about God's love.

United States – One in four evangelical women battered. Pastors say "submit and pray."

So don't you dare.

Don't you dare tell me to be a "Christian girl."

Don't tell me my suffering is sanctification.

Don't tell me to wait for a husband to lead me.

Don't tell me to be soft while women are stoned, raped, and silenced in the name of your God.

I would rather be a feminist—angry, loud, dangerous to the status quo—than spend one more minute pretending the "Christian girl" is anything but a lie wrapped in a leather-bound Bible.

If hell is for feminists, then heaven is full of the women your God burned alive.

And I know which side I choose.

Be a feminist. Not a corpse with a cross.

There’s a certain strain of moral absolutism that argues life begins not at birth, not at viability, but at the precise moment a sperm cell greets an egg cell. In this view, abortion isn’t just a medical procedure, it’s a sacrifice of a full human soul, complete with rights and hopes.

Let’s take that premise seriously for a moment. If we do, we don’t just arrive at pro-life politics. We arrive at a very weird, very bloody place, a place where oral sex becomes an act of mass cannibalism.

Follow the logic.

If the zygote is a full person, then the potential for that person resides in its constituent parts. But where do those parts come from? The sperm and the egg. And if those two cells, once joined, are sacred, what are they before the join?

Consider the sperm. Hundreds of millions are released in a single ejaculation. Under the “life-begins-at-conception” axiom, each of those sperm is not a person. But each carries half the unique DNA of a future person. To waste them is to waste half of a soul.

Now, where do those sperm often go? Into a condom. Into a tissue. Down a shower drain. And, yes, into a mouth.

If a swallowed ejaculate contains millions of potential persons (each sperm a half-finished key waiting for its lock), then swallowing is, at minimum, negligent homicide of possibilities. But if you believe the fertilized egg has full moral status, then you must also believe that the sperm and egg are the raw materials of that status. To consume them is to consume the un-consecrated host of a future saint.

Let’s push further: cannibalism is defined as the consumption of human flesh or tissue. Sperm and egg cells are human biological tissue. If a blowjob results in ejaculation and swallowing, one has ingested living human cells. If a zygote is a “person” because it has human DNA and a future, then those cells also have human DNA and a future—contingent on fertilization.

The only difference is a few minutes and a union event. That’s thinner moral ice than most are willing to skate on.

Of course, no one actually believes this. Not even the most ardent pro-life activist spits out communion wine for fear of “digesting Christ.” The reason is simple: bodies aren’t people. Potential isn’t actual. A seed isn’t a tree. And an unfertilized gamete, swallowed or otherwise, is not a murder victim.

The title of this piece is absurd on purpose. It’s meant to expose the absurdity of applying mystical, binary “soul logic” to messy biological realities. If you think abortion is a sin because a clump of cells is a person, then to be consistent, you’d have to declare oral sex an act of ritualistic cannibalism, masturbation a genocide of half-persons, and menstruation a tragedy of discarded thrones.

Since you won’t do that, since you’ll laugh, wince, or call this sophistry, you’ve already admitted the truth: personhood is not an on/off switch at conception. It is a gradual, complex, and deeply human question.

So let’s retire the sin talk. And maybe pass a napkin.

For generations across many African societies, women have been raised not to become individuals, but to become acceptable. Acceptable to fathers. Acceptable to husbands. Acceptable to culture. Acceptable to religion. Somewhere in the process, womanhood stopped being about humanity and became performance.

The tragedy is not that men created standards. Every society creates standards. The tragedy is that the standards placed on African women are often built on obedience instead of growth, silence instead of intelligence, endurance instead of happiness, and sacrifice instead of identity.

In many African homes, the definition of a “good woman” is painfully predictable. She must be quiet but hardworking. Ambitious, but never more successful than her husband. Intelligent, but never confrontational. Beautiful, but modest enough not to intimidate male insecurity. She must tolerate disrespect because patience is seen as virtue. She must carry the emotional burden of the home while pretending it is effortless. She must forgive cheating because “men are naturally like that.” She must cook, clean, pray, submit, endure, and disappear into service.

And if she does all these things successfully, society rewards her with a dangerous compliment: wife material.

But what exactly has she won?

A life where her dreams become secondary? A life where exhaustion is romanticized? A life where suffering is called femininity? A life where her value is measured by how useful she is to men?

If that is the highest achievement available to a woman, then society has fundamentally failed her long before she ever failed herself.

A disturbing reality in many African cultures is that men are not taught to seek partners. They are taught to seek caretakers disguised as lovers. The “ideal woman” is often simply a woman who inconveniences herself the most for male comfort. Her entire identity becomes built around maintenance: maintaining peace, maintaining family reputation, maintaining male ego, maintaining tradition.

Meanwhile, the same standards rarely apply to men.

A man can be emotionally unavailable, financially irresponsible, unfaithful, absent in parenting, lacking emotional intelligence, and still be considered respectable so long as he fulfills the minimum expectations of masculinity. Society forgives male failure easily while demanding female perfection permanently.

The imbalance is so normalized that many women no longer notice it. Some now compete for oppression, proudly announcing how much they can endure from a man as proof of loyalty. Pain has become a qualification for womanhood.

This is why many highly educated, talented, creative African women slowly shrink after marriage. Not because marriage itself destroys women, but because many marriages within patriarchal systems demand the death of female individuality. The woman who once had ambition becomes reduced to survival. The woman who once spoke boldly begins apologizing for existing loudly. The woman who once dreamed greatly begins negotiating for permission to breathe.

And society calls this maturity.

No human being should be celebrated for disappearing into another person’s expectations.

A woman is not successful because she suffers quietly. She is not virtuous because she tolerates humiliation. She is not “good” because she abandons herself to make men comfortable.

The true failure is not a woman refusing these standards. The true failure is a civilization teaching women that self-erasure is love.

The most dangerous thing African women were taught is that being chosen by a man is the highest form of achievement. This belief has destroyed countless lives. It has trapped brilliant women in abusive homes, silenced victims of violence, and convinced generations that loneliness is worse than oppression.

Yet history shows something different. Every society that progressed economically, intellectually, and politically did so when women became participants in civilization rather than servants beneath it. A society cannot develop while half its population is psychologically conditioned to minimize itself.

The future African woman cannot survive on old definitions. She cannot continue inheriting identities designed during periods where women were denied education, denied economic freedom, and denied political voice. Culture must evolve or it becomes imprisonment wearing traditional clothing.

A good woman should not mean a useful woman. It should mean a free human being with dignity, intelligence, ambition, emotional depth, and autonomy.

And any society that fears such women is not protecting culture.

It is protecting insecurity.

But does it teach a coherent, usable system of morality? The uncomfortable answer is: not really. At least, not in the way we desperately need it to.

The problem is not that the Bible lacks moral commands. It is drowning in them. The problem is that the Bible teaches everything, including the justification of genocide, the endorsement of slavery, the stoning of rebellious children, and the eternal condemnation of the curious, while providing no internal mechanism to distinguish the moral wheat from the chaff.

The Menu of Moral Chaos

Consider the 613 laws of the Old Testament. We are told not to cook a young goat in its mother’s milk (Deuteronomy 14:21), but also that it is permissible to sell your daughter into slavery (Exodus 21:7). We are commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18), and then commanded to dash infants against rocks (Psalm 137:9). We are told that lying is an abomination (Proverbs 12:22), and then rewarded for doing so (Exodus 1:19-20, Rahab and the spies).

This is not a moral code. It is a moral Rorschach test. Any ethical stance—pacifism or holy war, liberation or subjugation, tolerance or theocracy—can find its proof-text within the same leather binding. The Bible doesn't settle moral arguments; it merely supplies the ammunition for both sides.

The Great Evangelical Bypass

The most common Christian response to this problem is not to solve it, but to circumvent it. This is what theologians call hermeneutics—the art of interpretation. In practice, it is the art of deciding which verses are "eternal moral law" and which are "culturally conditioned ancient custom."

How do we know that "love your enemy" (Matthew 5:44) is binding, while "greet one another with a holy kiss" (Romans 16:16) is optional? How do we know that the prohibitions against homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22) survive the cutting-room floor, while the prohibitions against wearing mixed fabrics (Leviticus 19:19) do not?

The honest answer is that the believer must walk into the text already knowing what morality is. They must bring a filter. That filter is almost always secular humanism: the modern, post-Enlightenment conviction that cruelty is wrong, that human dignity matters, and that "love your neighbor" is more important than "suffer not a witch to live."

The Bible does not teach you to reject slavery. History teaches you that, in defiance of the Bible. The Bible does not teach you to value gender equality. The suffragettes taught you that, over the explicit objections of Paul. The Bible does not teach you that genocide is evil. The 20th century taught you that, after watching its logical conclusion.

What the Bible provides is narrative and relationship, not a moral system. The devout Christian does not consult Leviticus to decide whether to bail out a bank. They ask, "What would Jesus do?" But that question is meaningless unless you already believe that what Jesus did was good. And you can only believe that if you have an external moral compass that recognizes the Sermon on the Mount as sublime and the conquest of Canaan as barbaric.

The Bible is a magnificent, terrifying, beautiful, and brutal library of ancient texts. It teaches us about the iron age, about the birth of monotheism, about the psychology of exile and hope. It teaches poetry, prophecy, and the searing pain of betrayal. It teaches everything about how ancient people thought they should behave.

But morality? That is the one thing it cannot teach. Because morality requires you to choose which verses to obey. And that choice is always, always made from a place the Bible itself cannot supply.

The Bible is the question. Morality is what you bring to answer it.
