There’s a gravel lot off the old state highway where the truckers used to stop before they built the new interstate, and now it’s just the men who know. No app’s ever found it. Sixty-some years of being a big man have taught me that you don’t chase in a place like this. You park, and you smoke, and you let them see you, and the right ones make their way over.

And I’ve been watching one of them for the best part of an hour.

Slim kid, baseball cap, working the lot like it owes him money. I’ve seen him climb up into the silver pickup three rows over and come back down twenty minutes later wiping his mouth. Seen him lean into the window of the Buick by the fence and stay leaned in long enough that everyone with eyes knew what he was doing. Seen him on his knees in the open door of the panel van with the Arizona plates. Busy, busy boy. The lot’s been good to him today.

And now he’s drifting my way, slow, casual, like he just happens to be wandering in the direction of the biggest truck in the lot, and I let him come, and I draw on my cigar, and when he stops at the bottom of my cab step and shades his eyes to look up at me, I take the cigar out of my mouth and I tell him what I’ve been watching.

“Well, boy.”

I let the word sit in the heat. He goes still.

“You’ve been cruising this lot a good while now, haven’t you. No — don’t look around, don’t put on the innocent face, the sun’s too hot for that and I’m too old for it. I’ve been sat up here in this cab for an hour watching you work.” I count it off slow, the cigar smoke leaking out around the words. “The silver pickup. The Buick by the fence. That panel van with the out-of-state plates — you were down on your knees in that doorway a good fifteen minutes, son, the whole lot saw you. Busy morning. So let me ask you straight, the way the heat asks everything straight out here.” I lean down out of the cab toward him, my belly over my belt, the smoke rolling off me into the bright air. “How many loads you taken so far? Hm? Three? Four? You’ve got the look of a boy who’s lost count.”

His face goes red under the cap, that deep crimson that the sun didn’t put there, and his eyes drop, and his mouth opens and finds nothing to say, and that’s the whole answer, that red and that silence. He puts himself back together with shaking hands, wrecked and red and glowing, and before he climbs down out of the cab he looks back at me one more time — that look they get, the emptied-out grateful look — and I give him the nod.

“Lot’s open Sundays,” I say. “I park the deuce right here, nose to the mountains, most weeks. You come find the big truck, boy. Skip the warm-ups next time and come straight to the one that counts.”

He climbs down into the heat and walks back across the gravel toward whatever car he came in, walking a little different than he walked an hour ago, and I sit up in my cab with my cigar and watch the shimmer come off the mountains, and I think: not a bad way to spend a noon, out here, in the last lot the apps never found.

Some of us are still doing it the old way.

I’m twenty-six, and I have spent most of the last four years of my life walking the same mile of woodland above the lake, and I could draw you a map of it from memory that no council survey would recognise.

The path proper runs along the shore, and that’s for the dog-walkers and the pushchairs and the couples doing their weekend virtue. What I know is everything off it — the little worn desire-lines that peel away up the slope between the hazel and the thorn, the flattened places behind certain trees, the clearing at the top where three paths meet and no path arrives, the deep green tunnels under the hedge line where the brambles have grown over the top of themselves and made rooms. That’s the real map. That’s the map men have been walking since long before I was born.

This time of year is the best of it, and every cruiser I know says the same. The leaf cover comes right down — hazel and holly and the last of the bramble, everything green and low and closed over — and the woods stop being a place you can be seen in and become a place you can disappear in, and the crowd changes accordingly. In February it’s the brave and the desperate. In September it’s everybody. The regulars, the once-a-years, the ones from three towns over, the ones who only come when the cover’s thick enough to make them feel safe.

And it’s the late afternoon that brings me out, because the late afternoon brings out my kind of men.

I’ve never wanted lads my own age. Never once. I want them older — twice my age, ideally, and heavier, and settled, men who look like they’ve been something for thirty years. Businessmen, mostly, in this wood at this hour: that whole between-things procession, four till six, the cars pulling into the lay-by at the top with the engine ticking as it cools. The good suit. The wedding ring. The lanyard taken off and dropped in the cupholder. A man steps out of a car, and looks around, and looks at me, and gives the small nod — nothing more than a chin coming up an inch — and that’s the whole conversation. They want ten minutes off the path before they go home to their wives and their tea and their kids’ homework. They’re clean and pressed and smell of whatever they put on that morning, and they come already half-hard from the drive, and they’re grateful and quick and gone.

I love them. I do. Four years of them.

But today the wood gave me something else entirely, and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same about any of it again.

I’d gone deeper than usual. That was the start of it. It was well past five, the light going long and low and coming through the leaves in that late-September way, everything gold at the top and green-black underneath, and I’d taken the high line up past the beeches and into the hedge tunnels where the cover’s so thick it’s more or less dusk in there at any hour.

And I smelled it.

I want to try to do this properly, because everything that came after came out of this, and because I have never in my life been hit by a smell the way that smell hit me.

It arrived from somewhere ahead and above, carried on almost no wind at all, and it was completely, absolutely wrong for a wood — that’s the first thing. Woods in September smell of one thing: wet and rot and green, the sweet-sour of leaf mould breaking down, blackberry going over, fungus, the mineral cold coming up off the lake. That’s the whole register, and after four years I don’t even notice it.

This came through all of that like a brass band through a library.

Cigar. Not cigarette — I know cigarettes, everyone’s smoked one near me my whole life, and cigarettes are thin and grey and mean nothing; they smell of bus shelters. This was deep. It moved through those green tunnels in slow warm drifts, and it did not belong to the wood, it belonged to a man, and the wood was only carrying it.

And my body understood before my head did. My mouth flooded. My heart went. I turned into it like a dowsing rod turning to water, and I started walking, and I couldn’t have stopped.

That’s the part I keep coming back to. There was no decision in it. It was like something out of one of those stories you get read as a kid — the breadcrumbs, the thread through the maze, the music coming out of the hill — a thing in the woods calling you deeper off the path, and you go, and you know you’re going, and you go anyway, because whatever it is, it is for you.

I went about two hundred yards. Uphill, off any line I’d walked before, ducking under the low bramble arch and down into a green room I hadn’t known was there — cover to the ground on all sides, one shaft of gold coming through the canopy above, the ground trodden bare and soft with years of leaf.

And there he was standing in the middle of it, and he was nothing like anything the lay-by had ever sent me.

A farmer. There was no mistaking it and no need to ask.

Big — properly big, tall with it, six-two or -three and heavy through the chest and heavier through the great belly that pushed out the checked shirt between the buttons and hung over a leather belt worn pale at the buckle hole he actually used. Sixty, sixty-five. Grey stubble, a thick grey moustache, a face gone red-brown across the nose and cheekbones from thirty years of weather and white as milk where the cap sits. An old waxed jacket, gone the colour of a wet field, sagging in the pockets from a lifetime of carrying things. Work trousers with a shine on the thigh. And wellingtons — actual wellingtons, mud to the ankle, in a wood, at half five in the evening, as though he’d stepped straight over a gate on his way home and simply hadn’t seen the point of changing.

One hand in his pocket. The other holding the cigar down by his hip, and as I came into the clearing he lifted it back to his mouth and drew, and the coal went orange in the green gloom, and he looked at me down the length of the whole thing.

I got the rest of the smell then, up close, the full picture of him, and I’m going to tell you the truth about it: it was the best thing I have ever smelled in my life.

He didn’t smell bad. I want to be clear, because people hear this wrong. He wasn’t dirty, or neglected, or gone-over. He smelled used. He smelled like a man at the end of a full day of physical work, which is a completely different thing and a smell I’d genuinely never had at close range in four years of cruising this wood, because the men who come here at five o’clock have spent their day in air conditioning and a Volvo. There was clean sweat, gone slightly warm and sharp in the shirt. There was the mart on him somewhere — that particular sweet ammoniac dust that gets into a coat and stays there, straw and pens and diesel. There was dog, unmistakably, that biscuity oily doggy warmth off the sleeve where one had been leaning against him all afternoon. There was cattle meal, molasses-sweet, the smell of a scoop going into a bag. There was the rubber of the boots and the wax of the jacket and, under all of it, plain warm man.

And over it, crowning it, running through all of it like a seam through rock — the cigar.

Every businessman I have ever knelt for in this wood has smelled of the same three aftershaves, and they’ve all smelled nice, and not one of them has ever done to me what standing eight feet from that farmer did.

I looked at him. He looked at me.

I didn’t have to do anything with my face — I know that now, thinking back. Whatever’s in me was already all over it, and he read it in about a second and a half. He’s been around a few corners, that man; he’s stood at enough gates and enough marts and enough of these woods to know exactly what a young lad walking into a hidden clearing looks like when he’s already gone.

He drew on the cigar again, held it, let it go up through the shaft of gold light. And then he reached down with his free hand and unzipped himself. Just like that. No word, no nod even — just the small businesslike movement of a man who knows the score and doesn’t see the point of a discussion.

I went down on my knees in the leaf mould in front of him before he’d finished doing it.

He was soft when he brought it out, and I don’t think I’d ever properly understood until that moment how much better that is.

The businessmen arrive hard. They’ve been thinking about it since the car park; they’re ready before I’m on my knees, and I get a finished thing, a fait accompli. This was different. This was a big heavy loose thing in his hand, thick even at rest, uncut, with a long generous fold of foreskin hanging past the end of it, wrinkled and soft and warm, and he just held it there in front of my face and let me look at it. Let me take it in. Waited, with the patience of a man who’s spent his life waiting for weather and animals and prices, to see what I’d do.

God, the taste.

Warm. Salt. A slight sharpness right at the front of it — a whiff of piss, honestly, a man who’d been out all day and had a piss behind a hedge and shaken it and put it away, the way men have done since there were men — and four years ago that would have made me flinch and this afternoon it went through me like current. Because it was real. Because it was a man who’d been working, who lived in his body, who hadn’t scrubbed himself down and doused himself in something out of a bottle before coming to meet a stranger. He put his free hand on the back of my head — not gripping, just settling there, big and heavy and warm, a hand with proper calluses on it, the pads of it hard as a boot sole — and he guided me with it, small pressures, forward, down, hold there, while the other hand took the cigar to his mouth and away, to his mouth and away. Every so often he’d take it out and tap it with his thumb and I’d hear the little tick of ash falling onto the leaves beside me, and then the coal would go bright again as he drew, and then a few seconds later the smoke would come down over me, right down over my bowed head, and I’d breathe it in through my nose with my mouth full of him.

That’s what did it. That’s what took the whole afternoon somewhere I hadn’t been before.

Because I could taste him and smell the smoke at the same time — the salt and the skin and the day’s work in my mouth, and the dark sweet weight of the cigar going down into my lungs — and the two of them together made one single thing, one whole man, and I felt myself go under. Properly under. Not the pleasant little floaty ten minutes I get off a nice businessman in a hurry. Something deeper and slower and much further down, where my knees stopped mattering and my jaw stopped mattering and there was nothing left of me at all except the job in front of me.

And he grew.

That was the other thing, and I’d never had it like that either. He thickened in my mouth slowly, over minutes, not seconds — I felt it happen against my tongue, the shaft filling out and getting heavier and pushing my jaw wider, and then longer, reaching further back, and as it grew the foreskin drew tighter and tighter over the head of it until it was stretched taut and shining and the shape of him underneath showed through it. He came like a bull. There is no other way to write it and no other way it felt. I stayed on my knees in the leaf mould with him in my mouth and I felt every last thing — the final smaller pulses, the twitch of him against my tongue, the slow softening, that particular soft-heavy weight that only happens after — and I kept gently sucking, the whole way down, drawing out the last of it, taking every single drop of that man there was to have.

And when he was soft and spent and completely emptied I brought my lips to the loose warm end of him and kissed it. Just once. Properly.

Then I sat back on my heels and looked up.
