Mum used to call me at the end of each day, and we’d have a chat about how our day had been. I’d listen as she told me about something funny she had done, recommended a movie she thought I might enjoy, or shared one of her complaints about life and people.

I miss those nights.

My heart still aches when I remember Mum’s lively, vibrant voice on the other end of the phone. These days, she doesn’t remember to call me anymore.

On Sundays, I visit her or take her out for lunch. I still enjoy being with her, but it breaks my heart knowing that only minutes later, she may barely remember what we ate—or even that we had spent that time together.

And I feel the painful reality that, little by little, I am losing her.

I don’t know how I will deal with the grief when the time comes. But somehow, I feel that God is already gently preparing my heart.

Have you ever looked into the distance and seen dark clouds gathering on the horizon? The sun may still be shining where you are, but you can tell that rain is coming. Sometimes, you can even tell that it is going to rain hard.

Life can feel like that too.

There may be sunshine today, yet we know that rainy days will eventually come. A parent will grow older. Someone we love may become ill. A child will leave home. A career, ministry or season we have treasured will come to an end. Knowing this can make us afraid.

What do we do when we can already see the clouds forming? Do we pretend the rain isn’t coming? Do we spend our sunny days worrying about the storm?

Or do we remember that we already have a place to take shelter?

David prayed:

“I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.”
—Psalm 61:4

The shelter of His wings. Just holding that picture in my mind brings a deep sense of peace and comfort to my heart.

God does not promise that we will never experience storms. Following Him does not protect us from ageing, separation, disappointment, loss or grief. But He promises something perhaps even more precious—His presence in the middle of them.

So I don’t need to pretend that the rain isn’t coming. Neither do I need to live in fear of it. I can remind myself that when it comes, I already know where my shelter is.

I can take refuge in the presence of my Almighty God. He will be my strength when I feel weak and my comfort when my heart is overwhelmed. I can cry before Him, pour out my grief and trust that He will be there for me.

The Lord assures us:

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”
—Isaiah 43:2, NIV

And perhaps His shelter will sometimes come through the people He has lovingly placed around me. Family members who sit beside me. Friends who listen. Someone who calls at just the right moment, prays with me, brings a meal or simply stays close when there are no words to say.

Their love can become part of the shelter God provides—a roof over my head during some of the stormiest seasons of life.

I cannot stop every storm from coming. But I can choose where I will run when the rain begins to fall.

Prayer

Lord, sometimes I can see the clouds gathering, and my heart is afraid of what lies ahead. Help me not to let tomorrow’s worries steal the peace You have given me today. Teach me to stay close to You and rest beneath the shelter of Your wings.

When difficult days come, hold me when my heart is breaking and strengthen me when I feel weak. Whatever tomorrow brings, remind me that I will never face it alone. You will always be there. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Everyday Promise

I will dwell in God’s presence today, knowing that beneath the shelter of His wings I can face whatever tomorrow brings.

As I look back on my younger years, I can see how easily even good things can become our masters.

As Dad’s business became more successful, our family’s financial situation improved. We were grateful for God’s provision, yet those blessings also brought new temptations.

Dad gradually devoted more and more of his time and energy to work as he pursued greater financial success. The rest of us became captivated by the excitement of food, entertainment, travel and shopping, always looking forward to the next experience or the next purchase.

None of those things were wrong in themselves. They were good gifts from God, meant to be enjoyed. The danger was that they slowly demanded more of our attention, affection and energy than God ever intended.

The apostle Paul understood this danger well. He wrote, “I have the right to do anything... but I will not be mastered by anything” (1 Corinthians 6:12, NIV).

Paul’s concern wasn’t merely avoiding obvious sins. He was determined that nothing—not even good things—would become his master.

Freedom in Christ is not permission to pursue every desire. Rather, it is the freedom to live under Christ’s lordship instead of being ruled by our appetites.

But how do I recognise when something is becoming the master of my heart?

Sometimes the answer is found in the way I spend my free time.

…Am I becoming so dependent on entertainment that I struggle to be still before God?

…Do I instinctively reach for my phone to scroll through social media whenever I have a spare moment?

…Am I constantly looking for the next trip, the next purchase or the next activity to keep me occupied?

…Have I become so accustomed to constant stimulation that I’ve lost the ability to enjoy the simple pleasures God has already given me—a quiet walk, an unhurried conversation, a good book, or enjoying a simple meal with my family?

At other times, the answer may be found in my pursuits—my work, my ministry, or the goals and projects I’m working on.

…Have I become too busy to worship and spend unhurried time with God?

…Have I neglected my marriage, my family, my health or the rest that my body needs because I feel indispensable?

…Do I measure my worth by my productivity or by how useful I am to others rather than by my identity in Christ?

Many of our pursuits are often good gifts from God. The issue is not whether they are good or bad, but whether they have quietly begun to define our identity or take priority over what matters most.

The real test of what is quietly becoming the master of my heart is this:

If God asked me to step away from this pleasure or pursuit for a season, could I do it with peace?

If the thought fills me with fear, anxiety or discomfort, it may reveal that this good thing has gained a stronger hold on my heart than I realised.

Jesus never intended His followers to live in bondage—not to sinful habits, nor even to good gifts. He calls us to enjoy His blessings without allowing them to take His rightful place in our hearts.

True freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want, but the freedom to no longer be controlled by our desires. It is having the strength to say yes when God says yes, and no when He says no.

So whether you’re making an important decision or simply reflecting at the end of an ordinary day, pause and ask yourself:

What is quietly mastering my heart today?


Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for the many good gifts You have graciously placed in my life. Forgive me for the times I have allowed those gifts to take Your rightful place in my heart. Search me and reveal anything that has begun to master me.

Help me to set wise boundaries, practise self-control and keep You at the centre of every area of my life. May I enjoy Your blessings without ever allowing them to replace You. Teach me to live in the freedom that comes from having Christ as my only Master. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As I write this, George and I have been married for more than thirty-five years.

The years have brought us to a place of deep certainty that neither of us is going anywhere. We’ve grown older—grey hair, a few extra pounds, and all that comes with time—and we’ve grown accustomed to each other’s habits and quirks.

More importantly, we’ve accumulated countless treasured memories that we hope one day to share with our future grandchildren.

By all appearances, it might seem that time has been kind to us.

Yet over the years, I’ve come to realise something important:

Time alone cannot keep a marriage strong.

In fact, I’ve learned that the passing of years often tests a marriage far more than it strengthens it.

Sadly, I’ve seen this truth unfold in my own family. My parents separated after more than thirty-five years of marriage. Together they raised three children, built a beautiful home, and shared countless joys and challenges. Yet despite everything they had built together, their marriage eventually came to an end.

Their story reminds me that time, by itself, offers no guarantee of a lasting marriage. Many couples remain together for years, even decades, only to drift apart. Time may reveal the strength of a marriage, but it cannot create it. Instead, it often exposes the weaknesses in its foundation.

This raises an important question:
What is the foundation beneath our marriage?

That foundation reflects our deepest motivations: the reasons, hopes and expectations that shape why we marry and why we remain committed to one another. Whatever matters most to us will ultimately determine what our marriage is built upon.

The problem is that not every motivation provides solid ground. Some foundations appear strong and dependable at first, but life’s storms eventually reveal whether they can bear the weight of a lifelong commitment.

So where do couples commonly build their commitment?

Commitment Built on Shifting Sand

Some couples build their marriage on romance and physical attraction. While both are precious gifts from God, they naturally change over time. As the excitement of new love gives way to the familiarity of everyday life, couples who measure their love primarily by these feelings may begin to question whether they are still truly in love.

Others build their marriage around their children, only to discover that when the children leave home, they no longer know how to nurture their relationship with one another.

Still others build their marriage around financial security, shared dreams, or simply the good times. These are all wonderful gifts, but they were never meant to be the foundation of marriage. When circumstances change, the ground beneath that commitment begins to shift.

Commitment Built on the Solid Rock

Scripture points us to the only foundation strong enough to support a lifelong commitment.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain” — Psalm 127:1

This verse carries a profound truth for marriage. We may pour years of effort into our relationship, but unless the Lord Himself is its builder, our efforts alone will never produce the lasting security we long for.

But what does it mean for the Lord to build the house?

It means we invite Him to the very centre of our marriage. We no longer build our relationship around our own expectations, personal happiness, or changing emotions.

Instead, we begin to align our hearts with His purposes and our lives with His ways. Our greatest desire becomes not simply to have a happy marriage, but to honour and glorify God through it.

When that becomes the foundation of our marriage, it begins to reshape us from the inside out. As we submit our hearts to Christ, He transforms the way we think, the attitudes we carry, and the way we respond to one another.

It changes the way we love our spouse.

Our marriage gradually becomes less about demanding our own way and more about reflecting His character.

The storms still come. Feelings still fluctuate. Life still brings disappointment and hardship.

But when our marriage is built on reverence for God and faithful obedience to Christ, it rests upon the only foundation that can withstand every storm.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that a strong marriage is not built simply by the passing of time, but by a life firmly rooted in You. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my feelings, circumstances, or personal desires to become the foundation of my commitment.

Help me to honour You above all else and to faithfully put Your Word into practice each day. Strengthen my love, deepen my faithfulness, and give me the grace to persevere through every season. May our marriage always rest upon the solid rock of Christ, bringing glory to You in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When our family recently travelled back to our home country, one of the first decisions we had to make was where we would stay. Rather than deciding quickly, we weighed our options, read reviews, sought advice from relatives and prayed together before making our final decision.

As I reflected on our trip afterwards, it struck me that we often exercise great care over temporary decisions like accommodation for a holiday. Yet when it comes to decisions that shape the course of our lives, we sometimes act far too quickly, relying on our own judgement instead of seeking God’s wisdom.

Is it time to buy a new car? Should we purchase this house? Is this the right time to start a business? Should I accept this job? How should I respond to this conflict?

The book of Proverbs gives us this gentle warning:

“Do not be wise in your own eyes....” (Proverbs 3:7)

Wisdom begins when we recognise that we don’t know everything. It grows as we learn to depend on God rather than ourselves.

So how does God help us grow into people who make wise decisions?

Here are three habits that wise people practise:

#1 Pursuing Knowledge

Proverbs tells us:

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (Proverbs 1:5, NIV).

Wise people never stop learning. They understand that growth is a lifelong journey. They read, study, ask questions, observe and learn from both experience and the wisdom of others.

Above all, they continually turn to God’s Word, knowing that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).

Rather than assuming they already know enough, they remain teachable. Every lesson they learn and every truth they discover becomes another way God shapes their thinking and prepares them to make wiser decisions.

#2 Seeking Wise Counsel

Reflecting on my own life, I can see that my best decisions were made when I sought the wisdom and advice of others rather than relying solely on my own judgement. Past experiences have taught me that I can easily overlook important factors or make choices that seem right in the moment but may lead me down a difficult path.

Even the greatest leaders throughout history have relied on the counsel of others. King Solomon, one of the wisest men who ever lived, understood this deeply. He wrote,

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22, NIV).

We must also never forget that we have the best Counsellor of all—the Holy Spirit. He speaks through God’s Word, guides our hearts as we pray and often confirms His direction through the wise counsel of others.

#3 Listening with Humility

Seeking advice is only valuable if we’re willing to receive it. Many people ask for counsel after they’ve already decided what they want to do. They’re looking for confirmation rather than wisdom.

But Proverbs urges us to “incline your ear to wisdom” (Proverbs 2:2), and also says,

“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice” (Proverbs 12:15, NIV).

Listening requires more than simply hearing words. Sometimes wise counsel slows us down when we want to rush ahead. At other times, God’s answer isn’t what we hoped for.

It tells us to wait, to prepare more carefully, or even be willing to change direction altogether. That can be difficult, but it often protects us from the consequences of unwise decisions and leads us into something far better.

True wisdom isn’t measured by how much advice we receive. It’s measured by our willingness to obey what God shows us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for caring about every decision I make. Give me a teachable mind, a humble heart, and listening ears. Help me seek Your will above my own understanding, trusting that Your wisdom will always lead me into the life You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Who can forget the joy of their wedding day?

I can still remember standing beside George, filled with excitement and hope as we exchanged our vows before God. Like many couples, we were deeply in love. We enjoyed being together, admired each other’s strengths, and looked forward to building a life side by side.

At the time, I believed the love we felt would naturally carry us through the years ahead.

Yet, as every married couple eventually discovers, marriage does not remain in the honeymoon season forever.

The excitement of a new relationship gradually settles into something more familiar. Without even noticing it, complacency can quietly find its way into a marriage.

Some days we feel affectionate. Other days we make little effort to show it.
Some days we feel gracious. Other days we feel frustrated.

The little things we once did so naturally no longer happen as often. Slowly, we become less intentional in the way we express our love. We find ourselves reacting more quickly and extending less grace than we once did.

Looking back, I realise that if we allow our commitment to rise and fall with our emotions, our marriage can eventually drift off course.

A Commitment Guided By Emotions

The Bible warns us not to place our confidence in the human heart, for it can be deceptive and easily influenced by changing circumstances (Jeremiah 17:9).

When our relationship is guided mainly by emotions, we tend to show love when it feels easy but struggle when it requires effort and sacrifice.

When romance fades, conflict arises, or life becomes hard, we may start to question our love and commitment instead of recognising that every marriage experiences challenging seasons.

Feelings are an important part of marriage, but they were never meant to determine its direction.

A Commitment Guided By Promises

When our commitment is guided by promises, we recognise that love is more than a feeling and marriage is more than a romantic relationship. It is a covenant made before God and one another—to act in ways that honour and strengthen our relationship, regardless of how we feel.

While emotions may change, those promises remain the same. They help us choose kindness when frustrated, extend grace when disappointed, and remain faithful through life’s challenges.

These promises are not just words we wrote and recited on our wedding day. They were built upon truths that God had already established.

The promises to remain faithful, to forgive, to persevere, to serve and to love sacrificially all flow from His Word. We made those promises because God, in His wisdom, knows what is needed for a marriage to flourish.

Every time we choose to keep those promises, we are doing more than honouring our spouse—we are responding to God’s instructions and expressing our love for Him.

What is remarkable is that, as we faithfully live out those promises, our feelings often begin to follow. Rather than waiting for emotions to lead the way, we discover that loving actions can rekindle the feelings we thought we had lost.

Every act of kindness strengthens the bond between us. Every act of forgiveness weakens the grip of resentment. Every effort to listen and understand builds trust. Every thoughtful gesture breathes fresh life into the relationship.

God’s Love is Our Example

There is much about God’s love that reminds us that true love is far more than an emotion. He does not abandon us when we fail Him or withdraw when loving us becomes costly. His love is anchored in His faithful character and unwavering promises.

As husbands and wives, we are called to reflect that same kind of love—one that chooses faithfulness, grace and perseverance even when feelings ebb and flow.

When our commitment is guided by the promises we have made and the truths of God’s Word, we build a marriage that remains steady through every season.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us with a love that never gives up. When our feelings fade or our hearts grow weary, remind us of the promises we have made before You. Help us to choose patience over frustration, kindness over harshness, and forgiveness over resentment.

Teach us to love faithfully, not only when it is easy, but also when it requires sacrifice and perseverance. May our marriage reflect the steadfast love You have shown us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

When we left our home country to begin a new life in New Zealand, I remember sitting quietly on the plane, trying to hold myself together. The cabin lights were dim. Most of the passengers were asleep. But every time I closed my eyes, the tears would come again.

I would drift into sleep for a moment, wake up and feel the ache all over again.

Behind us were the people, places and familiar life we had always known. Ahead of us was a future we could not clearly see. Everything suddenly felt distant. There is a kind of loneliness that is difficult to explain unless you have lived it—the pain of leaving one life behind without really knowing what lies ahead.

Yet somewhere in the middle of all that grief and uncertainty, God’s promises became more real to me than ever before.

Not because everything suddenly became easy or the pain disappeared overnight.
But because His promises slowly carried me through what my own strength could not.

When many of us think about God’s promises, we often think about what He will give us—provision, protection, healing, answers, direction, or blessing.

And while God certainly cares for our needs, His promises were never meant only to change our circumstances. They were also meant to change us.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God’s promises produced something deeper within His people.

God’s promise to Abraham produced faith as he waited for the son he longed for.

God’s promise to Joseph produced perseverance through betrayal, hardship and years of uncertainty.

God’s promises to Israel taught them dependence in the wilderness.

His promises strengthened Joshua with courage as he stepped into overwhelming responsibility.

Even the disciples learned hope and endurance as they held onto Christ’s promises through suffering and persecution.

Sometimes we focus so much on whether God fulfilled the promise that we forget to ask what the promise was producing in us all along.

Looking back now, I can see that God was not only leading our family into a new country—He was leading us into a deeper and closer relationship with Him.

His promises taught us how to depend on Him more sincerely, pray more faithfully, and believe that He remains near even when life feels unfamiliar and uncertain.

Over time, we watched many of His promises unfold before our eyes. God provided for our needs, gave us strength when we felt emotionally exhausted, surrounded us with support, restored our joy, and slowly turned an unfamiliar place into our home.

But perhaps the greatest thing His promises produced in us was this: a faith that learned to trust Him more deeply than before.

God’s promises are not merely destinations we wait to reach. They are also tools He uses to shape our hearts as we walk with Him.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest miracles of all—not only that God changes our circumstances, but that through His promises, He changes us.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being faithful through every season of my life. When fear, uncertainty, or pain overwhelm me, help me hold firmly to Your promises. Teach me to trust You not only for the blessings I seek, but also for the work You are doing within my heart. Through every trial, produce in me deeper faith, endurance, hope, and a closer walk with You. Amen.

On a Sunday morning after church, I found myself in conversation with my friend Anne. As she spoke about her two sons, there was a quiet heaviness in her eyes—a grief that didn’t need explaining, yet was clearly there.

She shared how they had both drifted away from their faith.

“I did my best,” she said. She had raised them to follow Jesus, faithfully bringing them to church and guiding them along the way. She had even witnessed each of them receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour as teenagers. And yet, over time, she watched them slowly walk away—until their faith was no longer part of their lives.

My heart went out to her. I didn’t know what could truly comfort her in that moment, but as I listened, I found myself quietly wrestling with the same questions weighing on her heart.

It’s easy to place the blame on our parenting. Maybe we missed something. Maybe we didn’t do all that was necessary. Or maybe our best just wasn’t good enough.

But the painful truth is this: our best will not always be enough.

All three of my children are now grown and walking strongly in their faith. But during the years I was raising them, God was also raising me—out of my own immaturity. There were moments I didn’t respond the way I should have. Moments I fell short of the kind of parent I wanted to be. And in those moments, I realised how much I needed God to guide me.

I certainly didn’t do everything right.

I brought my shortcomings to God long ago and continue to rest in His grace. And still… I ask myself: Even if I had done everything perfectly…would I really have been able to control their choices?

This doesn’t mean we leave our children’s training to chance. Scripture still calls us to “train them in the way they should go” (Proverbs 22:6). We are called to raise and guide our children as faithfully as we can.

And even if they walk away, our role doesn’t end there.

We carry them in prayer. We entrust them to God. And we remain ready for any opportunity—no matter how small—to gently point them back to Him.

We don’t give up on them simply because they’ve chosen a different path. After all, we’re talking about their eternal future.

But the point is this: it’s not all on us if they walk away.

At the end of the day, faith is not a decision we can make for them—it is a choice each heart must make.

I’ve seen this in my own children. At one point in his young life, my son chose to surround himself with friends who would strengthen his faith. My daughter made the brave decision not to pursue a relationship with someone who didn’t share her faith. Those weren’t choices I made for them—they were choices they made for themselves.

In moments like these, I see more clearly where my role ends and God’s begins. I’m reminded to trust Him with what I cannot control. Just as He was at work in their hearts when they made those decisions, He is still at work—even in seasons when we cannot see it.

Even God, in His perfect love, does not force the hearts of His children. He has shown us everything—His love, His truth, His sacrifice—yet many still choose to walk away.

And if even a perfect Father is met with rejection, then we, as imperfect parents, must come to terms with what was never ours to control.

In a way, this frees us from carrying a weight we were never meant to bear.

So what can we do?

And as we do, we hold on to this truth:

Prayer
Father in heaven, You know the hearts of our children more deeply than we ever could. Help us to be faithful in training, guiding and loving them—without carrying what was never ours to control.

Even when they choose to step away from their faith, remind us that You are still at work in their lives. Teach us to trust You with their choices, their journey and their future, knowing that You love them even more than we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

I once met a lady at church who seemed kind and helpful. She served during events, showing up when needed, involved in ways many would consider faithful.

Over time, I began to notice something about her kindness. It felt… selective. There was warmth toward those she felt drawn to, but a distance with others—a lack of gentleness and sometimes even a quiet sharpness in her tone.

And though she served, it was at times accompanied by subtle complaints—small hints that her heart wasn’t fully at peace.

When I see something like this, I try to be careful—not to judge, not to mirror what I see, but to let it become a reminder for me.

I am aware of how easily my own kindness can become the same—shaped by how I feel, rather than by who I am called to be. If my kindness is to be consistent, I learned that it must come from within, not from circumstances.

So I hold on to a few simple reminders that guide me when my kindness is being tested:

Life has a way of placing us in situations—and with people—that quietly test our kindness. In those moments, we have a choice: we can react according to our natural impulses, or we can respond as someone who follows Jesus.

When I remember who I am—who I belong to and who I represent—my response begins to change. Kindness is no longer just something I try to do when it feels right; it becomes an expression of who I am becoming in Christ.

It is a quiet reminder that my words, my tone and my actions reflect more than just me—they reflect Him.

Kindness is not shaped by how others respond—it is guided by who we are seeking to honour.

There are moments when my first instinct is to withdraw, to feel irritated, or to mirror the tone I’m given. But when I remember who I belong to—and who I am living to please—it becomes easier to pause and redirect my response.

And when I choose humility, patience, and grace, I begin to experience something unexpected: a quiet sense of joy, a small but certain victory within. Not simply because I handled the situation well, but because I know I have pleased the heart of God.

When I come across moments that test my kindness, I turn to a quiet strength I’ve long relied on—prayer.

Instead of reacting outwardly, I bring that person before God—not with a critical heart, but with a surrendered one. I ask Him to gently reveal anything in them that needs to change, just as I ask Him to search my own heart and guard me from falling into the same patterns.

Prayer shifts the moment. It softens our hearts and reminds us that we do not have to carry the weight of the situation—we can place it in God’s hands.

Kindness is not something we simply produce—it is something that grows.

It is a fruit of the Spirit—an outcome of a life rooted in Him.

It grows as we spend time with Jesus and listen to his voice. In those quiet, restful moments, our hearts are softened, our thoughts are renewed and our strength is restored.

I have also come to value the importance of physical rest. When I am tired, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin, I become more irritable, more reactive and less aware of how I speak or respond to others. It becomes much harder to reflect kindness when I am running on empty.

Sometimes, all we need is to slow down. It is in that place of rest—both physical and spiritual—that we receive what we need to be kind when it is hardest.

Questions to reflect on:

• When my kindness is tested, do I respond from habit—or from a heart shaped by the Spirit?

• Am I staying close enough to Jesus and caring for my own rest, so that I can truly love others well?

Let this be the bible verse that guides your heart toward real kindness:

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you–Ephesians 4:32, NIV.

Prayer

Lord, You have shown me a kindness I did not deserve. Teach me to reflect that same kindness to others—not selectively, not conditionally, but faithfully. Search my heart and reveal what needs to change. Guard me from pride, and help me to serve with humility.

Teach me to rest in You, so that I may have the strength to respond with grace. Draw me closer to You each day, so that my life may bear the fruit of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What makes us believe that the resurrection of Jesus is real?
This is not a small claim. It is not a story simply meant to inspire…

For some, belief in the Resurrection feels like a leap of faith.
But for others, it began as an honest investigation.

There was once a journalist, Lee Strobel, who set out to disprove Christianity. Troubled by his wife’s growing faith, he used his training in journalism and law to examine the evidence—especially the Resurrection.

What he discovered was impossible to ignore…

First, the empty tomb.

Jesus was publicly executed under Pontius Pilate, and His burial was known. If His body had remained, the message would have been silenced immediately. Yet even those who opposed Him could not produce a body—they could only claim it had been taken.

There was a theory that Jesus didn’t really die (‘the swoon theory’), suggesting he survived the crucifixion. Historically, this is widely rejected because Roman execution methods were thorough, and a severely injured man could hardly convince others He had conquered death.

Second, the eyewitnesses.

Many claimed to have seen Jesus alive after His death—not just individuals, but groups. At one point, more than five hundred people were said to have seen Him at the same time, many of whom were still alive when the account was recorded (1 Corinthians 15:6, NLT).

They spoke of real encounters—conversations, shared meals, moments they could not deny. These accounts were recorded early, within the lifetime of those who could challenge them, yet they endured.

Third, the transformation of His followers.

Before the crucifixion, they were afraid and scattered. Afterwards, they became bold and unwavering. They proclaimed the resurrection in the very place where Jesus had been killed, and many suffered and died for it.

People may give their lives for something they believe is true—but not for something they know is false.

The Resurrection was not built on blind belief. It stands on evidence that demands a response.

And for Lee Strobel, the journalist, the evidence pointed to one unavoidable conclusion:

Jesus truly rose from the dead.

What struck me most about all of this was not just the evidence—but the transformation of the disciples. These were not men who gained something from their claim, but men who were willing to suffer—and even die—for it.

Even without having been there, I find myself convinced of the reality of the Resurrection—not only because of what happened then, but because of what I continue to witness today.

I have seen how Christ continues to transform people—how He heals what is broken, reshapes the heart and brings a kind of life none of us could produce on our own.

This is what I’ve come to realise: my faith is not anchored simply in the knowledge that Christ rose from the dead, but in the evidence of His life rising within me.

In the ways I am still being changed, in the areas where I am learning to surrender, to trust and to love more deeply.

I am no longer just raising my hands and singing praises to God on a Sunday morning—I am learning to worship Him in the quiet choices of my everyday life.

This is where the Resurrection becomes real.

The Resurrection is not just something that happened long ago— it is something still unfolding today in the lives of those who walk with Christ.

Let’s reflect on the following questions:

• Am I living as someone who truly believes the resurrection happened?

• What quiet choices can I make today that reflect His life at work within me?
  

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Thank You that Your resurrection is not just a story I believe, but a truth that transforms me. Help me to see the evidence of Your life in the way I live each day.

Teach me to reflect Your patience, Your love and Your humility in my home and in my relationships. Continue to change my heart, so that others may see that You are alive in me. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

I saw them wrestle over a decision that would eventually mark the beginning of the end of their marriage.

Dad had been wise, but this time he was on the verge of squandering one of the last opportunities to turn things around for the business he and mum had built together. Mum saw it clearly and offered wise counsel—but Dad wouldn’t listen.

Was it pride? Or had his past successes made it harder for him to see beyond his own understanding? Or was it something deeper—perhaps a struggle to fully trust Mum, not recognising that she, too, had made good decisions in the past.

Looking back now, the outcome speaks for itself. Dad could have greatly benefited from listening. And Mum… she carried her own regret. If only she had not given up on Dad—if only she had stayed faithful to her covenant and continued to stand, pray and fight for their marriage.

After a few years apart, they came to realise that despite their differences, they still loved each other—and that what they had was far more precious than what had come between them.

As I reflect on it now, I find myself wondering how things might have been different had they both turned more fully to God instead of navigating those decisions on their own.

We often think “irreconcilable differences” are about major disagreements—money, direction, decisions. But more often, they are the result of something quieter and more dangerous: a space where God is no longer invited to work.

When we stop inviting God into our decisions, our conversations and our conflicts, we begin to carry more than we were meant to. And what we carry alone eventually weighs down the relationship.

This is why Scripture calls us to a different posture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5, NIV).

For the greatest danger in marriage is not that we will disagree—but that we will begin to navigate those disagreements without God.

When God is no longer at the centre, we default to ourselves.
We defend instead of discern.
We speak to be heard but struggle to truly listen.
We make decisions based on fear, pride, or past wounds rather than wisdom.

But when God is invited into the middle of our differences, something changes.

He softens what has become rigid.
He brings clarity where emotions have clouded judgment.
He gives us the humility to pause, the patience to listen, and the wisdom to respond with grace.

Instead of asking, “How do I prove my point?” we begin to ask,
“Lord, what are You teaching me through my spouse?
How can I love well in this moment?”

Reconciliation begins—not in solving the issue first, but in surrendering our hearts to God. Because before anything is resolved between us, something must be made right within us.

Surrender shifts our posture and allows God to quiet the noise of our own thoughts and make space for His wisdom to lead us. And often, as our hearts begin to change, the way we see the situation—and each other—begins to change as well.

Prayer

Father, You see the places where we struggle to understand each other and the moments when our hearts begin to pull apart. Teach me to trust You more than my own understanding. Soften what pride has hardened in me, and help me to listen with humility and love.

When I am tempted to withdraw or insist on my way, remind me to invite You into that space. Lead us in wisdom, restore what has been strained and draw our hearts back together in You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

In the early years of our marriage, George and I agreed on almost everything—big or small. It felt as if we were a match made in heaven.

But one day, during a casual conversation about politics, we suddenly found ourselves on opposite sides of an issue. I remember feeling unsettled—almost worried. Are we drifting apart? Are the values we hold changing?

Instead of arguing, I chose to listen. I held back my immediate response and tried to truly hear what he was saying. As I did, I began to see things from his vantage point. I didn’t agree with everything—but my softened tone invited him to see the situation through my eyes as well.

This taught me something important: reconciliation begins when one heart chooses humility over fear, and listening over winning.

One of the promises I outline in my book What It Means When I Say I Do is to accept our differences in marriage. Even in the closest relationships, differences will exist. You may begin your journey thinking you agree on everything, only to discover later that you don’t.

But God never intended marriage to be a union of identical minds—it is meant to be a union of hearts that choose to grow together.

Often, it isn’t our differences that widen the gap—but how tightly we cling to our own way. When both partners insist on their opinions, rights and preferences, distance grows. Marriage calls us into oneness, yet selfishness quietly pulls us back into two separate lives.

So how do we reconcile differences with grace? Here are 5 steps to guide us:

1. Seek to Understand, Not to Win

When tension rises, our instinct is to defend ourselves. We want to explain, correct, or prove our point. But listening isn’t about preparing a rebuttal—it’s about understanding your spouse’s heart. It means laying down the need to defend yourself long enough to step into their experience and see what they are feeling beneath their words.

Often, reconciliation begins the moment one person feels truly heard.

Remember this: “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19, ESV).

2. Accept That Growth Takes Time

Your spouse may not see things the way you do today—but give them room to grow. God is shaping both of you, even in seasons that feel slow or frustrating. Patience softens the atmosphere of your marriage and makes room for grace.

Remember this: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” (Philippians 1:6, NIV).

3. Pray Instead of Pressuring

It is far more fruitful to pray for each other than to push for change. When you surrender your differences to God, you invite His wisdom into your marriage.

Prayer aligns your heart with God’s—softening frustration and planting peace where division once grew.

After all, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously…” (James 1:5, NIV).

4. Focus on What Unites You

Differences can either pull you apart or shape you into greater unity. Reconciliation begins when you return to what you share—your covenant, your faith, your love, your purpose.What binds you together carries more weight than any argument. When you return to your shared purpose, even conflict loses its power to divide.

Above all, “clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14, NLT).

5. Choose Humility Every Day

Every disagreement presents a choice—to demand your way or to display Christ’s way. Humility opens the door to healing because it places love above pride and understanding above ego.

Let this be the verse that guides you and your spouse every day of your marriage:

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:2, NIV)

Prayer

Lord, teach us to love beyond our differences. When we don’t see eye to eye, remind us that You are our common ground. Give me patience when I’m tempted to insist on own my way, and grace to listen with humility. Soften our hearts, Lord, and help us to grow—not into sameness, but into the likeness of Christ, who unites us in love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When they were growing up, I encouraged my children to begin each day with God—to open the Bible, to sit quietly with His Word and to learn to recognise His voice through Scripture.

I shared with them what I had come to learn myself: that as we listen to God’s Word and allow it to shape our thoughts and choices, growth happens slowly and quietly—helping us become more like Jesus in everyday life.

Yet there came a moment when one of my daughters approached me feeling discouraged. She asked, almost in frustration, “Why, despite all this time with God, am I still so impatient? Why do I still say things that upset people?”

I gently reassured her that nothing was wrong with her devotion or the time she spent with God. She was still young, and spiritual maturity cannot be rushed—it is formed over time. But I also knew, as her mother, that there was something she had not fully grasped—a vital truth that many sincere believers overlook:

Faith is not only about hearing. It is also about doing.

Scripture reminds us: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22).

Jesus Himself spoke about this when He said that those who hear His words and put them into practice are like someone who builds their house on a firm foundation (Matthew 7:24–25).

When we listen, we allow the Spirit to plant God’s truth like a seed in our hearts.

But it is as we put into practice what we have heard that the Spirit nurtures that seed, causing it to grow and bear fruit in our lives.

Imagine opening the Scriptures and reading these words:
“Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry…” (James 1:19)

Not long after, a situation arises or you come across someone who tests your patience. In that moment, you are faced with a choice: will you obey the instruction you have just read, or will you allow your anger to rise?

When you choose to obey, you release control and allow the Spirit to shape your response.

But when you react in anger, you resist the Spirit’s work. You quiet His influence and limit His power to change you and teach you how to become slow to anger.

While God alone brings transformation, He shapes us through a process that requires our participation. While He is working within us, strengthening our will and stirring our desire to obey, our role is to respond to His Work by living it out.

Each small act of obedience allows His Spirit to work more deeply in our hearts and lives.

Over time, as we consistently put God’s Word into practice, it moves from the page into our habits, our reactions and our character.

Patience now quietly forms our spirit.

Kindness settles into our hearts.

Love becomes the way we naturally respond.

So perhaps the missing element of your faith is not more listening—but a small, intentional step of obedience today. One moment where you choose to live out what you already know.

That is where the Word takes root.
And that is where real transformation begins.

Take a moment to reflect on these questions:

• What in God’s Word have I delayed putting into practice?

• How can I move from hearing His Word to living it out today?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for speaking to me through Your Word. Give me the courage to live what I hear—not in my own strength, but through Your grace at work within me. Help me choose obedience in small moments, trusting You to shape my heart as I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

I’ve rarely felt confident enough to write on a particular topic, much less turn it into a book. Yet time and again, I’ve discovered that faithfulness—not competence—is what carries me through.

Faithfulness reveals itself in the small promises I keep—to return each day to the work God has placed in my heart, even when self-doubt lingers. Over time, I know it is this steady faithfulness that grows my confidence and shapes my ability.

Looking back, I recognise that most of my quiet triumphs in life and work did not happen because I suddenly became more capable. They happened because I chose, again and again, to stay committed to the path God was inviting me to walk.

This has taught me something important: faithfulness carries us farther than talent ever could. Goals and plans may set the direction, but only commitment has the strength to take us all the way toward fulfilment.

Here are at least five ways God sees our promises—and why they matter to Him.

#1
God considers our promises not just commitments, but spiritual training grounds.

God views our promises as places of formation. When we make and keep a promise, our integrity is tested and strengthened. Each time we choose perseverance over quitting, we grow in the courage and discipline needed to follow the path God has set before us.

Our promises become quiet classrooms—places where God patiently teaches us to walk by faith rather than by impulse.

#2
God looks at our promises as a response of trust to His provision.

God often goes first. He opens doors, provides opportunities, supplies resources and places callings within our reach. But His provision alone does not bring fruit—our commitment does.

Our promises are how we respond to what God has already given. They are the means by which His gifts are stewarded, nurtured and grown into something that blesses others.

When we commit to using what God has provided, we participate in turning potential into purpose—and provision into blessing.

#3
God sees our promises as invitations to partnership with Him.

God never intended for us to keep our promises in our own strength. He knows that the courage to make a promise—and the faithfulness required to keep it—must be drawn from Him.

When we place our promises before God and ask for His strength, we turn our promises into a partnership. We stop striving alone and begin walking with the God who gives endurance, wisdom and grace.

#4
God treats our promises as a way to bring honour to His name.

God isn’t looking for us to make countless promises we cannot keep, but neither does He call us to settle for commitments that are easy to fulfil and cost us nothing. He invites us to form promises that safeguard our well-being, strengthen our relationships, nurture our families and reflect His love to others.

God values promises because He Himself is the Promise-Keeper.

God treasures promises because they flow from His very nature. He is faithful, steady and unchanging. When we live as promise-keepers, we reflect His image in a world that has forgotten what faithfulness looks like.

When we honour our promises, we do more than keep our word—we bear God’s name with integrity. Our faithfulness becomes a living testimony, quietly pointing others towards the God we represent.

Take a moment to reflect on these questions:

• What promises is God challenging you to make today?

• Which acts of faithfulness, when fulfilled, would please him and bring honour to His name?

Prayer

Faithful God, teach me to value faithfulness over feelings and perseverance over ease. Strengthen me to keep the promises You place on my heart—not by my strength, but by Yours. Let my quiet obedience reflect Your faithfulness and honour Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

If you are reading this, I want you to know something first: you are deeply loved by God — not because of what you have done, but because of who He is.

“…God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8, NIV

The Gospel is not a story about how to become a better person. It is the story of how God came to rescue us when we could not rescue ourselves.

God created us for relationship with Him — to know His love, His peace and His presence. But all of us, in our own ways, have chosen to live apart from Him. The Bible calls this sin — not just wrong actions, but a broken connection between our hearts and God’s heart.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23, NIV
“Your iniquities have separated you from your God.” — Isaiah 59:2, NIV

Yet God did not turn away from us.

He came toward us.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” — Luke 19:10, NIV

Jesus Christ, God’s Son, entered our broken world and lived the life we could not live — perfectly loving, perfectly obedient, perfectly faithful. Then He willingly carried our sin, our shame and our separation to the cross.

He died in our place so that we could be forgiven, restored and brought back into relationship with God.

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross.” — 1 Peter 2:24, NIV
“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV

But the story did not end with the cross.

Jesus rose again — proving that sin, death, and darkness do not have the final word. Through Him, we are offered new life, new identity, and a new beginning.

“He is not here; He has risen.” — Luke 24:6, NIV
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV

Salvation is not something we earn. It is a gift we receive.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8–9, NIV

And this is why Jesus could say with love and clarity:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6

This is not a message of exclusion — it is a message of invitation. God did not make many confusing paths back to Himself. He made one clear, loving way — so no heart would be lost trying to find Him.

When we place our trust in Jesus — not just believing He exists, but trusting Him with our lives — God forgives us, adopts us as His children, and begins a quiet, beautiful work of transformation within us.

“To all who received Him… He gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” — 1 John 1:9

You do not need to have everything figured out.
You do not need to be perfect.
You only need to be willing.

“Whoever comes to Me I will never drive away.” — John 6:37

If your heart is open, you can speak to God in your own words, or simply pray something like this:

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13

If you prayed that prayer — or even felt the desire to — I want you to know that God hears you. He is near. And this is not the end of your journey — it is the beginning.

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” — Psalm 145:18

Here at Everyday Promises, my hope is to walk with you as you learn what it means to follow Jesus, one small promise at a time.

Because faith does not grow in a moment.
It grows in daily choices.

Daily trust.
Daily surrender.
Daily promises.

And every promise you place in His hands, He holds with faithfulness.

As a new year begins, I find myself thinking about what lies ahead—the decisions I will need to make, the challenges I cannot yet see, and the prayers I will one day whisper. The future always carries a measure of uncertainty. I do not know what this year will demand of me, or how much strength I will need to walk through it.

Yet I’ve learned something important: I do not step into the unknown empty-handed.

Throughout Scripture, God often asked His people to remember—not because He feared they would forget events, but because He knew they would forget what those events revealed about Him.

When the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into a new season, God instructed them to take twelve stones from the riverbed and set them up as a memorial. Those stones were meant to serve as visible reminders of what God had done and who He had been to them in that moment.

The stones were not meant to keep the people looking back, but to strengthen them as they moved forward. Each time they saw them, they would remember that God made a way where there was none, that He was faithful to lead them through uncertainty, and that He could be trusted again in the future.

In much the same way, I’ve learned that as I step into a new year, Scripture invites me to pause and remember. Looking back steadies my heart and helps me move forward with confidence. It reminds me that whatever lies ahead is not new territory for God—He has already proven Himself faithful, and I trust He will do so again.

As I look back, there are five things I choose to remember—five “stones” of remembrance that steady my heart and strengthen my faith.

#1
Goals God Enabled Me to Reach

When I look back at the things I was able to accomplish, I see God’s grace quietly at work. He met me in moments of self-doubt and gave me the strength to keep showing up. Each step forward was possible not because I felt capable, but because God sustained me. Remembering this gives me confidence to trust Him with the goals still ahead.

Challenges God Carried Me Through

Some seasons stretched me, humbled me and brought me to my knees—but they did not defeat me. God met me in those difficult places and carried me through. Remembering this reassures me that future challenges are not signs of God’s absence, but opportunities to trust His faithfulness again.

As I look back, I notice blessings both obvious and easily overlooked—God’s provision, protection, encouragement and love. Remembering these gifts deepens my gratitude and strengthens my trust in God.

As I move into a new year, remembering what God has already done gives me peace. These memories become my stones of remembrance—visible reminders that God has been faithful and will be faithful again. With that assurance, I step forward with clarity, courage and hope.

Closing Prayer
Faithful God, thank You for every goal You helped me reach, every challenge You carried me through, every prayer You answered, every lesson You patiently taught and every blessing You gave. As I step into a new year, help me remember Your faithfulness and trust You for what lies ahead. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When my children were young, I was always the one negotiating for a holiday home instead of a camping ground. I never minded an adventure — as long as I could come back to a warm bed, a working kitchen, and a clean bathroom.

I used to joke that if we were going away as a family, the place needed to feel like home or better. If we were spending precious time together, it had to be somewhere comfortable — somewhere that wouldn’t make us miss what we’d left behind.

So when I think about Jesus leaving heaven — perfect, glorious, and filled with everything good — to be born in a manger… it still stuns me.

A feeding trough.
A cold floor.
A place no mother would choose for her child.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” — Luke 19:10.

I understand it more now than I did years ago, because I’ve seen how God meets us in the simplest, hardest places. There was a season when my parents stood on the edge of losing everything they had built.

It felt as though life had placed us in our own ‘manger’—bare, uncertain, humbling.

Every day carried its own ache of not knowing what was going to happen next. Yet strangely, that became the season our laughter grew louder, our prayers deeper, our gratitude sharper.

I still think back to that weekend we spent at the beach. After what felt like a long season apart, we were finally together again as a family… and that moment, though small and simple, felt beautiful — almost sacred.

In that season, a deeper truth about the manger began to unfold in my heart:

… The manger shows me God’s humility.

It is the clearest picture of how far God was willing to go to reach me. It shows that the King of Heaven chose the lowest place — not a palace — to make Himself known.

The Scripture says,

“Though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” — 2 Corinthians 8:9, NIV.

… The manger tells me that God is near, even in the most ordinary places.

He is near, not only when life looks perfect.

He came so I would know that even in loss, He is my joy.

Even in uncertainty, He is my peace.

Even in grief, He is my hope.

The Bible tells us,

“…they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”) — Matthew 1:23, NIV.

… The manger becomes the place where light breaks into my world.

There have been moments in my life when I felt lost, unsure of which way to turn. But every time, it was God who broke through my darkness. His light found me long before I knew how to look for it. His gentle leading showed me the next step, and the next — until I found myself back in His presence again.

The Scripture says,
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light” — Isaiah 9:2, NIV.

… The manger reveals that God’s presence changes everything.

It’s not the beauty or the size that transforms a place—it is His presence.

What was once just a feeding trough became the cradle of glory simply because Jesus rested in it. And the same is true in my life.

When His presence enters the small, ordinary, or broken places in me, everything begins to change.

He takes those broken pieces of my life and reshapes them for His purpose.

He takes my struggles and transforms them into the very things that strengthen me.

It’s His presence that makes the small significant — and nothing surrendered to Him stays small.

God’s Word says…

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you” — Ezekiel 36:26.

Let this be our prayer today…

Pray

Jesus, thank You for stepping into our world, for trading heaven’s glory for a manger, and for meeting us in places that feel small or uncertain. Teach me to find joy in the simple, peace in Your presence, and hope in Your promise that You are always near. Let my heart become a place where You are welcomed with wonder. Amen.

I love giving gifts. There’s something joyful about knowing you’ve made someone feel seen and special. Whether it’s Christmas or a birthday, I’ve always believed that gift-giving is not just an act of generosity—it’s an expression of genuine thoughtfulness.

“It’s the thought that counts,” as we often say.

And for me, it truly does. Whenever I’m buying a gift for someone close to me, I pause and think about them—what they enjoy, what they’ve mentioned in passing, what would bring a smile to their face. The worth of a gift is not found in its price tag, but in the heart that chose it.

But here’s the part that always made gift-giving hard for me: all the guessing. Wondering if the person would truly appreciate what I chose. There were times when I simply didn’t know them well enough to be sure, or I hadn’t paid enough attention to what they liked. So I had to rely on assumptions—choosing what I would enjoy receiving, or what seemed practical and affordable for me at the time.

But through the many gifts I’ve given—and the many I’ve been blessed to receive, I learned a truth that has shaped the way I give: a thoughtful gift is not just something I’m excited to offer—it’s something the other person is glad to receive, something they’ll use, enjoy and genuinely treasure.

So I changed my approach to gift-giving. Instead of guessing, I started asking. With my family, I’d encourage them to make wish lists within my budget. And with friends, whenever I ever have the opportunity, I try to get ideas from the people close to them or I ask them directly. It may soften the surprise, but I’ve found that it brings more joy in the end—because I can give something I know they’ll truly appreciate.

What God Teaches Us About Gift-Giving

As my understanding of giving began to change, my heart was gently drawn to the way God gives. His giving is never careless, never uncertain, never done in a hurry. On that first Christmas, God didn’t choose something dazzling or decorative. He chose what was eternal. He gave with perfect wisdom and with a love so tender it saw straight into the emptiest places of our hearts.

God knew…

We needed forgiveness.

We needed hope.

We needed love.

We needed someone who could step into the broken places we could never mend on our own.

So God gave us Jesus.

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given… — Isaiah 9:6, NIV.

He has been to me the most intentional gift—shaped by a love so patient, so gentle and so powerful that it still changes me in ways I could never change myself. Through Jesus, God met the deepest need of my own heart and offered a joy I didn’t have to earn and a grace I could never deserve.

And that same gift is being held out to you right now. If you’re searching, longing, or simply curious… open your heart to Him. He has never stopped offering Himself—and He delights for you to receive Him.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life — John 3:16, NIV.

Prayer

Father, thank You for giving Jesus—the gift my heart needed most. Shape my giving to reflect Yours: thoughtful, loving, and full of purpose. Help me offer what truly blesses others, not what simply fills a space. May every gift I give point to Your love and bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When my kids were small, I remember hurrying around the house, trying to finish everything before my husband got home. I wanted everything spotless—the dishes done, the toys put away—so that when he walked through the door, he’d feel the warmth of coming home, not the weight of another mess.

The moment he stepped through the door, I could already see the tiredness on his face—but part of me still hoped he’d notice all the effort I’d made to make things nice for him. Instead his eyes went straight to the one thing—yes, that one thing I’d missed—not the dozen things I had done right!

I felt so disappointed. Yet, if I’m honest, I’ve done the same thing. There were days I zeroed in on what my husband didn’t do than on all the things he faithfully did. When I focused on unmet expectations, I lost sight of the quiet, steady love expressed through his actions.

Left unchecked, I know that kind of thinking slowly drains gratitude from my heart—and when gratitude fades, the love I have for my husband starts to feel distant.

That’s when it became clear to me: gratitude doesn’t grow naturally; it must be practised intentionally.

Here are two simple but powerful steps that can help us build a thankful heart in marriage.

Gratitude begins in the mind. It’s a shift in focus—from what’s missing to what’s present, from what’s wrong to what’s right. Instead of expecting perfection, think about all the good your spouse brings to your life. Remember their efforts, sacrifices and quiet acts of love.

When we dwell on faults, our hearts harden. But when we choose to see the good, our hearts soften. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8, NIV).

Train your thoughts to see your spouse through this lens. And when disappointment creeps in, forgive quickly. Pray for them instead of criticising them. Finding faults won’t change your spouse, but prayer can—because when you pray, you invite God into the work of transformation. Gratitude and grace often begin on our knees.

Thinking grateful thoughts is the beginning, but expressing them is what breathes life into the relationship. When your spouse does something kind, say thank you right away. Don’t wait for grand gestures. Appreciate the small ones—the meals they prepare, the rubbish they take out, the problem they help you solve, the quiet ways they make life easier.

Let your gratitude take form through your actions. Return kindness with kindness. A note of appreciation, a warm embrace, or a thoughtful act of service communicates love more powerfully than silent approval ever could.

Scripture reminds us, “… let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:18, NIV). Gratitude comes alive when it’s practiced, not just felt.

Studies show that when gratitude is expressed, the brain releases dopamine and oxytocin—chemicals that build trust, joy and connection. In other words, saying thank you literally strengthens the emotional bond between two people.

Gratitude becomes a reinforcing loop: kindness inspires gratitude, and gratitude inspires more kindness.

The Prayer of a Thankful Heart

Lord, open our eyes to notice grace in small things and love through Your eyes.
Help us see that when we make gratitude a habit, criticism begins to fade and peace gently takes its place. Remind us that marriage isn’t about perfection but about growing together under Your perfect love.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

I only heard about Charlie Kirk from my daughter after he was killed on that fateful day in September. Many young people had already been following him online, but adults like me on this side of the world perhaps only began learning about him after his death. That’s when I started watching his interviews and hearing how boldly he spoke about his Christian faith.

I couldn’t help but admire his courage. How rare it is today to see a young person stand before a crowd and speak so boldly about their Saviour, when so many hesitate to even share their faith with a friend.

Opinions about him will differ, but one thing is certain—his death ignited something far greater than we could have imagined. Social media is suddenly filled with testimonies of young people not only picking up their Bibles for the first time, but also coming to know Christ as their Saviour. What the enemy meant for destruction became a trumpet blast drawing attention back to Christ.

Just a week before Charlie’s death, our pastor delivered a powerful message: followers of Christ are called to be watchmen—men and women who speak God’s truth with urgency.

In Ezekiel 33:7–9, God appointed the prophet Ezekiel as a watchman over Israel—to stand on the walls, listen for His word and warn the people when danger approached. If he saw trouble coming and remained silent, he would share in their guilt.

But if he sounded the warning and they refused to listen, he would be innocent before God. What mattered most was not how the people responded, but that Ezekiel had been faithful to do what God asked.

That same calling rests on us today. God has placed each of us as watchmen in our families, friendships and communities. When we see people walking toward eternity without Christ and choose to stay silent, we share in their peril—not because we joined in their sin, but because we did nothing to help them turn around.

Silence is not love. Warning is.

Our culture says tolerance is love, that minding our own business is respectful. But if I see someone drifting toward the cliff of eternity without Christ, how can I claim to love them and stay silent?

The Scripture reminds us that a friend who truly cares will tell us the truth, even when it hurts (Proverbs 27:6)—and when we help someone turn from the wrong path, we save them from death and cover a multitude of sins (James 5:19–20).

We live in urgent times. Voices rise daily to challenge and mock the Gospel, yet the opportunity to shine Christ’s light has never been greater.

And what if they refuse to heed our warning?

Like a watchman on the wall, we sound the alarm so others may have the chance to turn—but whether they receive the message is between them and God. Our task is not to control their response but to faithfully bring them God’s truth.

Charlie’s life and death reminded us that the courage to speak isn’t reserved for pastors or leaders—it is the call of every believer. Wherever God has placed us—at home, at work, in friendships or community—we are watchmen.

The question is: will we sound the alarm?

Let this watchman’s prayer guide your heart today:

Heavenly Father, You have called me to be a watchman. Show me the ones in my life who need to hear Your truth spoken in love. When fear rises and I hesitate, remind me that silence is not love.

Strengthen my heart to speak with courage and gentleness, trusting You to work in ways I cannot see. Prepare me each day to be faithful in this calling and open the hearts of those I warn, so they may turn to Christ and find life in Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I used to live by the rule, “When in doubt, don’t do it.” And for a long time, that seemed like safe advice. If I wasn’t completely sure about something, I held back. Sometimes that protected me from unwise choices.

But over time, I began to ask myself: Should I always allow doubt to stop me? What if doubt isn’t meant to be a wall, but a doorway—an invitation to seek God more deeply?

Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples, knew this tension well. After the resurrection, when the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” Thomas refused to believe unless he saw proof for himself. He wanted certainty, not risk. For a week, his doubt kept him outside the joy of believing.

Then Jesus appeared to Thomas and said, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27).

Jesus didn’t shame Thomas for his doubts—instead He called him to move past them. Thomas’s doubt wasn’t meant to be his guide. Jesus was.

And that’s true for us too. Doubt in itself isn’t always wrong. It can serve a purpose: it slows us down long enough to pray, to ask God for strength and guidance, to weigh the cost of what we are about to do and to consider if it truly honours Him.

Doubt can be the moment that sends us deeper into trust.

But once we have prayed, sought His Word and invited His wisdom, doubt should not be the master of our decisions. Faith must have the final say.

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” —John 20:29

The danger of letting doubt lead is that it narrows our world to what feels safe, predictable and controllable. Yet faith calls us to step beyond that, trusting the One who sees the whole picture when we cannot.

Scripture never tells us to ignore wisdom or leap recklessly. But it does remind us that fear is not our compass. Doubt is not our master. Christ is.

• Doubt says: “What if I fail?”
  Faith says: ““I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13, paraphrased).

• Doubt says: “What if I can’t handle it?”
  Faith says: “God’s grace is made perfect in my weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, paraphrased).

• Doubt says: “What if I don’t have enough?”
  Faith says: “My God will supply all my needs” (Philippians 4:19, paraphrased)
  

Thomas’s story reminds us that doubt is human—but it should never have the last word. Jesus does.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on these questions:

• Where am I allowing doubt to paralyse me from stepping out in obedience?

• How can I let my doubts drive me deeper into prayer and God’s wisdom, instead of letting them hold me back?

• What step of faith is God asking me to take, even when I’m uncertain?

Let these words guide your prayer today:

Heavenly Father, You know the doubts that weigh on my heart. Thank You for meeting me in them, just as You met Thomas. But don’t let me stay there. Teach me to pray through my doubts, to seek Your wisdom and to trust You with the outcome. Give me courage to obey, even when I don’t see the whole picture. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

My Everyday Promise:
I will not let doubt be the voice that guides me—I will seek God, pray through my questions and trust Him with the outcome.
