This past week, I rewatched a movie that I haven’t seen for over 30-years, (pre-my son Casey being killed in Iraq in 2004): Glory.

Glory is a poignant story about a true-life Civil War all “colored” (except for the officers) Batallion: The 54th.

When I first watched Glory ca. 1990 with my oldest daughter who was nine at the time, we sobbed during some scenes. This time, however, when I watched it (streaming for free on Tubi), I could only imagine how terrified Casey felt when he was shoved into the battle in Baghdad that robbed him (and those of us who loved him) of his life and future. I became slightly unglued. Grief and injustice are two “gifts” that never stop “giving.”

At least the troops and white abolitionists who led the 54th had something personal for which they fought. These days, could the motives for “war” be any clearer? No working-class/poor person has any stake in Empire. Period. The. End.

The Empire is in decline so the Empire is getting even more deranged as it tries to hold on to the last vestiges of power and profit.

Don’t go, Don’t Kill (DGDK) by Cindy Sheehan

The recent repeal of the US military policy of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” is far from being the human rights advancement some are touting it to be. I find it intellectually dishonest, in fact, illogical on any level to associate human rights with any military, let alone one that is currently dehumanising two populations as well as numerous other victims of it’s clandestine “security” policies.

Placing this major contention aside, the enactment of the bill might be an institutional step forward in the fight for “equality”; however institutions rarely reflect reality.
Do we really think that the US congress vote to repeal the act and Obama signing the bill is going to stop the current systemic harassment of gays in the military?

While I am a staunch advocate for equality of marriage and same-sex partnership, I cannot - as a peace activist - rejoice in the fact that now homosexuals can openly serve next to heterosexuals in one of the least socially responsible organisations that currently exists on earth: The US military.

It is an organisation tainted with a history of intolerance towards anyone who isn’t a Caucasian male from the Mid-West. Even then I’m sure plenty fitting that description have faced the terror and torment enshrined into an institution that transforms the pride and enthusiasm of youth into a narrow zeal for dominating power relations.

Wrong battle for equality

It is hard to separate this issue from the activities of the military. War might be a “racket”, but it is also the most devastating act one can be involved in, whether you are the aggressor or a victimised civilian, no one can shake off the psychological scars of war. No one.

Its effects on the individual as well as collective human psyche are terminal. Championing equal rights is an issue of morality, war is immoral, and the US military is heading further and further down the path of immorality.

Even with the advent of WikiLeaks, transparency and accountability of US military activity has been sucked into a black hole of silence. Drone attacks, illegal cross-border interventions, extra-judicial assassinations all occur in the name of national interest. It is not in the interest of equal rights activists to support an institution that is intent on ignoring every protocol of human decency.
Face it, gays are now and have been in the military since before Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War.

The only difference being one can now admit their orientation without fear of official recrimination - a major boon for the equal rights movement! The capacity for increased carnage should not be celebrated as a victory!

I cannot help but think about those that are on the receiving end of US military aggression. So a minor change has occurred at the input juncture of the war machine, but the output remains the same: we dismantle systems of indigenous governance, support disingenuous often criminal overlords, commit endless acts of brutality, and worst of all leave entire nations rudderless, spiraling downwards into the same abyss that engulfs the US military’s lack of accountability.

I wonder what the response towards don’t ask, don’t will be overseas? I wonder if mothers across the Swat Valley in Northern Pakistan are cheering the repeal of the act (most likely not), gathering in the streets to celebrate a victory in the global pursuit of human equality, only to be forced to take cover as yet another hellfire-laden drone appears on the horizon. Hell hath no fury, as a drone operated from somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Don’t equal human rights extend to those that the Empire has mislabeled as the “enemy”? Or do we now have to ignore the fact that innocent people are being slaughtered by the thousands?

Unjust binaries

We live in a world governed by binaries, straight or gay, them or us, freedom or tyranny. Until we break away from this norm, we shall forever be shackled to a narrow existence, manipulated by a political establishment that serves its own interests.

We should embrace complication, appreciate difference and most of all not be duped into accepting “victories” that clearly benefit an elite, that you and me (pardon the binary) will never be part of.

Some of us in the peace movement work really hard to keep our young people out of the hands of the war machine that preys on disadvantaged young people in inner cities and poor rural settings.

To see a demographic that is (without appearing to stereotype) traditionally better educated, more politically progressive, and economically advantaged fight to join this killing machine is very disheartening.

I can see how one could view the repeal as a step forward, framed in the context dictated by the political elites of the Washington beltway. I can imagine much displeasure amongst the military brass – but I cannot reiterate enough how this is not a progressive moment in the social history of the United States.

The US military is not a human rights organisation and nowhere near a healthy place to earn a living or raise a family. My email box is filled with stories of mostly straight soldiers and their families who were deeply harmed by life in the military.

Because of the callous and violent nature of the system, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is on the rise and suicide rates among veterans and the spouses of active duty soldiers are skyrocketing.

Veterans still find it very difficult to access the services, benefits and bonuses that were promised to them by their recruiters. I cannot imagine the repealing of DADT significantly improving the material conditions experienced by gays during military service.

While the children of war profiteers and politicians are protected from any kind of sacrifice, this Empire preys on the rest of our youth - gay/straight; male/female - and spits their mangled or dead bodies onto the dung heap of history, without a qualm or a twinge of conscience.

Joining the US military should never be an option for the socially conscious while our troops are being used as corporate tools for profit, or hired assassins for imperial expansion. Soldiers are called: “Bullet sponges,” by their superiors and “dumb animals” by Henry Kissinger, the former secretary of state.
While soldiers are dehumanised and treated like dirt, they are taught to dehumanise “the other”, and treat them as less than dirt. It is a vicious cycle, and the way to stop a vicious cycle is to denounce and reject it, not openly participate.

I want to bang my head against a wall when another young gay person commits suicide as a result of despicable bullying, yet people within the same community have fought hard for the right to openly join the biggest bully ever! Don’t go, don’t kill!

Is this a foreign policy of liberation, or just a perpetual motion machine designed to feed the war economy?

The most chilling confession in modern U.S. foreign policy wasn’t made in a courtroom. It was made in a magazine interview.

It were generally accepted that the Soviet Union was the unprovoked aggressor in Afghanistan, and the U.S. stepped in to defend a sovereign nation.

But the architects of the empire have already admitted the truth: The invasion was deliberately provoked.

Former CIA Director Robert Gates and National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski confirmed what history books hide: The U.S. didn’t arm the Mujahideen after the Soviets invaded in December 1979. They armed them six months before.

Why? Brzezinski wrote to President Carter on the very day the aid began: “We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam War.”

It was a calculated trap. And the Afghan people were the bait.

Years later, when asked if he regretted arming the extremists who would eventually become the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, Brzezinski’s answer exposed the pure, sociopathic calculus of hegemony:

“What is more important in world history? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire?”

To the imperial mind, 1.8 million dead Afghans, 2.6 million refugees, and a country littered with 10 million landmines were not tragedies. They were acceptable line-item expenses.

But the lie didn’t end in the 1980s. The U.S. didn’t “liberate” Afghanistan by funding the Mujahideen, and it certainly didn’t “liberate” it during the 20-year occupation after 9/11.

Remember Barack Obama’s famously eloquent promise to “destroy, dismantle, and eliminate” the Taliban and Al Qaeda? It was a masterclass in using beautiful, wise-sounding words to mask a catastrophic reality.

When the U.S. finally “withdrew” in 2021, it didn’t leave behind a liberated democracy. It handed the keys of the country right back to the exact same Taliban it swore to eradicate.

The Afghan people were never allies; they were cannon fodder. First for the Cold War, and then for two decades of military-industrial profit.

When a US empire spends 40 years and trillions of dollars, sacrifices millions of lives, only to return a country to the exact same rulers it went to war to overthrow, we must ask:

Is this a foreign policy of liberation, or just a perpetual motion machine designed to feed the war economy?

Say Yes to Hillary: Two-Thousand and Never

Right after Camp Casey the huge media circus/protest in front of George Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas in August of 2005, I was invited to the home of Producer/Director/Actor Rob Reiner (RIP) to meet and have a chat. Also at that meeting was a major philanthropist (although I didn’t know it at the time) to all causes Clinton, wealthy Stephen Bing.

I naïvely believed that I was there because Rob Reiner and Steve Bing (also, RIP) were against war. HAH! I was there because Rob and Steve were above all things (even peace and justice) pro-Democrat.

At this meeting, the suggestion was made to me that I should support the potential candidacy of then NY Senator Hillary Clinton for president in 2008. Bing looked me right in the eyes and said, “Senator Clinton is our only hope.”

“Our only hope for what? Perpetual war?,” I asked. I also reminded Steve and Rob that she not only voted for the war my son and hundreds of thousands of others were needlessly and tragically murdered in, but she proudly did grunt work for the Bush administration in being a chief-Democratic Cheerleader for it. After which, Bing looked me right in the eyes again and said, “Mrs. Clinton is against the war, and she will come out against it when it is politically advantageous to do so.”

Well, even though I am not a multi-multi-millionaire with fancy homes and a private jet, I would not sell my soul to the Reiners or Bing to support a person who was/is so thoroughly opposed to everything I believed in.

My suspicions about Hillary Clinton were confirmed in a meeting I had with her on Capitol Hill about a month later where she said that the US had to remain in Iraq to “honor” the sacrifices of those that had died after I told her that I didn’t want my son’s death honored with more murder and mayhem.

I suppose since Hillary is potentially running for POTUS in 2016, it has become “politically advantageous” for her to come out with “regret” for her vote, saying in her new book about her pro-war vote: “I wasn’t alone in getting it wrong. But I got it wrong. Plain and simple.”

Well, also “plain and simple,” millions of people are dead, wounded, displaced, lives ruined. That she can be so glib about being a dumb shit while my son, and too many others, are dead forever really pisses me off.

With the Empire beating the drums for more war against Iraq, don’t believe a word this shill for Wall Street and the War Machine says about her Iraq vote or anything else—ALL WAR IS WRONG and anyone who votes for it is a murderer, period!

As Secretary of State, Hillary cackled hysterically when after a US bombardment of Libya, killing tens of thousands, Moammar Qadafi was slaughtered in the streets: “We came; we saw; he died.” (She’s as psychopathic as the male warmongers).

I not only don’t believe her “politically advantageous” admission, I don’t believe she was fooled into voting the way she did. A lot of us never bought what the Bush administration was selling (SEE, White House Iraq Group) and we weren’t in the Cat Bird’s Seat in DC like was she. All of these people (Hillary included) should be in prison for life, not out raking in the big dough and running for public office.

Please do not mistake that this exposé of Hillary Clinton, Two-Thousand and NEVER is an endorsement of whatever shill will be nominated by the Republicans that year, it’s not.

I am desperately disappointed that out of the ashes of Obama’s havoc wreaking on the world, a new and principled antiwar movement has not arisen and that people like Bing and Reiner did not one day say, “Hey, I do care about the world more than I care about Democrats.”

Sadly, what the hell will it take?

Recently, I was watching a video on YouTube about the Folger coffee dynasty and the family estate in Woodside California. It was very interesting, I had never thought about the “best part of waking-up” company that much, but, as a California history student, the origins of the coffee giant in the 1849 Gold Rush fascinated me.

Of course, besides coffee, the other thing the family is known for is that an heir to the fortune, Abigail aged 25, was one of the victims of the Manson Family in 1969 on Cielo Drive.

I was paying more attention to the California history part of the Folger family, until the narrator said that Abigail and her mother Ines Mejia Folger (a descendant of an original Spanish land grant family) were major donors and volunteers at the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic! My ears definitely picked up when I heard that.

In Tom O’Neil’s thoroughly researched book Chaos (pictured above—-link to order) he heavily ties Charles Manson, and some of his “girls” to the HAFC in San Francisco during the so-called Hippie days. Is it a coincidence that “Gibby” Folger was one of the victims that night on Cielo Drive? I don’t believe in coincidences, but I also don’t remember O’Neil making that connection in the book. While I was watching the video, I researched the connection between the Folgers, the HAFC, the CIA, etc, but I came up empty-handed. Anything I would say past this is pure speculation.

As linear time is divided into B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) and A.C.E. (you can guess what that acronym means), my life is divided into two eras: B.C.D and A.C.D, Before and After my son Casey Died.

Most of you know about my life After Casey Died (killed in another immoral U.S. imperial war for profit), but I had nearly 47-years of life before 04 April 2004 fundamentally and profoundly changed my life forever.

One part of my life B.C.D. was that I was a history student taking upper-division U.S. History classes at UCLA before our family packed our lives up and headed north (from SoCal to NorCal). As part of my studies, I took several classes in Indigenous Peoples studies: how can studying U.S. History be complete without studying the first peoples?

I feel like my core is the same A.C.D., as it was B.C.D. but, I feel like I have found new ways to analyze and express myself in my two separate lives. The meme above about dying for Israel would have come A.C.D. The article which I am including in this post springs from B.C.D., but lands here where I am still very interested in such information!

Please let me know your thoughts on this brief article and maybe any day/event that you have found divides your life into two distinct eras.

Another neocon bites the dust!

I grow weary of being told that I need to “respect” the dead. Why? When the deceased was such a horrible person when he/she was alive? If a person doesn’t want his/her death to be celebrated, then they should live a life worthy of respectful mourning. Many are paying glowing tribute to Lindsey, but, they are also the ones that I will not be sad to see go.

I know I have just scratched the surface of this special psychopath, what are your thoughts?

After Iran gets pummelled again, was he actually looking in a mirror?

I remember getting a phone call scolding from a “revolutionary” who was upset that I had posted the above photo about Stacey Abrams and criticized her hypocrisy for it. She was upset because they supported Abrams—yes, because revolution comes from the Democrat Party! Is there any defense for the above bullsh!t.

The reason many of us are still focused on those Bizzarro years is that nothing has been resolved. Nobody has been held accountable for the swath of destruction committed in the name of “public health” but, in reality, for profit, control, and fulfilling an agenda of stigmatization of those of us who had the audacity to question that craziness.
