Hormonal health education is often associated with perimenopause and menopause, yet many women’s experiences of hormonal symptoms begin decades earlier. By the time they reach midlife, they may already have spent years being told that difficult periods, severe mood changes, acne, irregular cycles, unexplained weight gain or persistent fatigue are simply things they need to tolerate.

These early experiences matter. They can shape whether a woman trusts what her body is telling her, whether she feels entitled to ask further questions and whether she expects a healthcare appointment to provide explanation or simply another way to manage the most disruptive symptom.

Share

PMDD and PMOS are distinct conditions. They should not be placed under one vague hormonal label, and they will not require identical forms of assessment or support. However, women living with either can encounter a similar problem: their symptoms are treated individually while the connections between them receive far less attention.

Different conditions require different conversations

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, involves severe cyclical symptoms that can have a substantial effect on mood, work, relationships and everyday life. Timing is a central part of the picture. Understanding when symptoms appear, how they change and whether the pattern repeats across menstrual cycles can provide important information.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, can involve menstrual, hormonal and metabolic health. A woman may seek help for irregular or absent periods, acne, changes in hair growth, difficulty managing her weight, fertility concerns or low energy. She may receive support for one of these symptoms without being given a clear explanation of how it may relate to the others.

The distinction matters because “hormonal” is not a sufficiently precise explanation. A woman experiencing severe cyclical mood symptoms needs a different conversation from a woman experiencing irregular cycles alongside signs of metabolic dysfunction. Both deserve to have their symptoms taken seriously, but good support begins with understanding the specific condition rather than treating every hormonal experience as though it has the same cause.

“hormonal” is not a sufficiently precise explanation

A diagnosis is not the same as an explanation

Receiving a diagnosis can bring enormous relief. It can reassure a woman that her experiences are real and that there is a recognised reason she has been struggling. However, a diagnosis is most useful when it opens up a conversation about what the condition means and what happens next.

Too often, the label is followed by another fragmented response. A woman may be offered something for her mood, something for her skin or something to regulate her periods. These options may be appropriate and valuable, but she should also understand what each one is intended to address and whether there are other aspects of her health that need consideration.

Symptom management and education are not competing approaches. Medication can be important. Psychological support can be important. Nutrition, sleep and stress management are also relevant. The problem arises when any single option is presented as the entire answer, without acknowledging the wider context or the individual woman’s experience.

A diagnosis should help a woman move forward with greater clarity. It should not leave her with another label and the same unanswered questions.

What happens when symptoms are repeatedly dismissed?

When symptoms begin in adolescence or early adulthood, a woman may have no point of comparison. She may assume that everyone experiences the same degree of pain, emotional distress, exhaustion or disruption. If she is repeatedly told that her experience is normal, she may stop mentioning it.

This can be particularly damaging when the symptoms affect her education, work or relationships. She may begin to see herself as unreliable or incapable without recognising that there is a repeated physiological pattern influencing how she feels. I educate clients that symptoms are essential information, and they deserve context.

This does not mean that every difficult period or change in mood indicates PMDD, or that every irregular cycle means a woman has PMOS. Many symptoms can have more than one possible explanation, which is precisely why appropriate assessment matters. Education should help women recognise when something is having a meaningful effect on their lives and give them the confidence to ask for further support.

A diagnosis should help a woman move forward with greater clarity. It should not leave her with another label and the same unanswered questions.

Why recording patterns can be so useful

Memory is not always an accurate record, particularly when symptoms vary across the month. A woman may arrive at an appointment knowing that she has been struggling but find it difficult to describe exactly when symptoms occur, how long they last or what changes when they lift.

Keeping a daily symptom record across more than one menstrual cycle can make a pattern easier to see. For a woman concerned about PMDD, this may help clarify whether symptoms consistently relate to particular stages of her cycle. It also gives her more specific information to take into a conversation with a healthcare professional.

The purpose is not to use a diary to diagnose yourself. It is to gather useful information. Other physical or mental health conditions may need to be considered, and severe symptoms require appropriate professional assessment.

Women should also seek urgent support if cyclical mood symptoms include thoughts of self-harm or suicide rather than waiting to complete a symptom record.

PMOS deserves a better food conversation

The nutrition conversation surrounding PMOS can quickly become reduced to weight loss. Women may be told to lose weight without being given a meaningful explanation of why food, appetite, insulin and metabolic health could be relevant.

“Lose weight” is not an education. It does not help a woman understand how to build a more satisfying meal, why protein may be useful or how the composition of her food can affect energy and appetite. It may simply reinforce the belief that her body size is the problem.

When I am choosing food, I tend to begin with protein and then build the rest of the meal around it. This is not about pursuing a perfect diet or following a rigid list of permitted foods. It is a practical way of considering whether a meal will be nourishing, satisfying and likely to sustain me.

A woman deserves to know what she is trying to support and why a particular change has been suggested.

Food is not the whole answer to PMOS. Medical care, psychological wellbeing, sleep, movement and stress can also form part of the wider picture. The aim is not to suggest that women can resolve a complex condition through willpower or dietary discipline. It is to give them a clearer explanation of why particular choices may be relevant.

Lifestyle advice must have a purpose

Women with PMDD or PMOS are often given the same broad recommendations: eat well, exercise, sleep more and reduce stress. None of these suggestions is inherently unreasonable, but they can feel dismissive when they are delivered without reference to the condition or the severity of a woman’s symptoms.

Lifestyle support should have a clear purpose. A woman deserves to know what she is trying to support and why a particular change has been suggested.

For one woman, the most useful first step might be keeping a symptom record. For another, it might be reconsidering the composition of her meals or creating a more consistent sleep routine. Someone else may need medical or psychological treatment before broader lifestyle changes feel manageable.

Consistency can be valuable, but it should not become another standard women feel they have failed to meet. A realistic change that reflects the woman’s circumstances is more useful than an ideal routine she cannot maintain.

Helping younger women ask better questions

The purpose of hormonal-health education is not to turn every woman into her own clinician. It is to help her understand her experiences well enough to participate in conversations about her care.

Could these symptoms be connected?

Does the timing across my menstrual cycle matter?

What is this treatment intended to address?

Are there other possible explanations that should be considered?

Would recording my symptoms provide useful information?

Is there a metabolic aspect of my health that needs attention?

What should I do if the first option does not improve my symptoms?

These are not confrontational questions. They are reasonable questions from a woman who wants to understand her health and make informed choices.

Women should not have to wait until perimenopause to be told that hormonal health extends beyond a single hormone or symptom. They should not have to reach midlife before learning that nourishment, stress, sleep, metabolic health and sex hormones can interact. Most importantly, they should not have to spend years believing that symptoms which disrupt their lives are simply evidence that they are failing to cope.

PMDD and PMOS require different conversations, but the principle is the same: women deserve recognition, explanation and support that reflects the whole person.

For much of my life, exercise existed in the same world as weight loss. I don’t think I was particularly unusual in that. Women of my generation grew up surrounded by the idea that exercise was something we did to burn calories, compensate for what we’d eaten or make our bodies smaller. The harder the workout, the more successful it seemed. Sweat was good, exhaustion was even better. If you could barely walk the following day, you’d clearly done something worthwhile.

The eat less-move more mantra, is a very pervasive and toxic conditioning.

My relationship with movement changed considerably after developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. When your body no longer responds in the way you expect it to, you become very aware of the difference between challenging yourself and simply depleting yourself. I couldn’t keep demanding more from a body that was already struggling to meet the demands being placed upon it, and that forced me to reconsider something I had previously taken for granted: more exercise isn’t necessarily better exercise.

Exercise is, after all, a form of physiological stress, it’s part of the reason exercise is so beneficial. We create a demand and the body responds by adapting. Muscles become stronger, cardiovascular fitness improves and our capacity increases. But there is another part of that process that receives considerably less attention, particularly in a culture that celebrates pushing harder: the body also needs the resources and opportunity to recover from the demand we’ve created.

The resources, and opportunity, to recover are just as important as the exercise.

That distinction has become increasingly important to me as I’ve moved through midlife. I still want to challenge my body, but I’m much less interested in proving how hard I can push it. Instead, I think about what I’m trying to achieve. I want to preserve and build muscle. I want good cardiovascular fitness, mobility and balance. I want a strong body that’s metabolically healthy and resilient. Most importantly, I want my exercise to support the rest of my life rather than leave me too exhausted to enjoy it.

This is where I think the conversation around exercise for women needs to change. We have spent an extraordinary amount of time teaching women to exercise for the body they can see in the mirror and nowhere near enough time teaching them to exercise for the body they will need in twenty or thirty years. When the primary measure of a workout is calories burned, it’s very easy to overlook the things that may matter much more as we age: muscle, strength, bone health, cardiovascular fitness, balance, mobility and the ability to remain physically independent.

If you’re enjoying this post, share it with your friends.

Share

For me, that makes strength particularly important. Muscle isn’t simply about aesthetics, and strength training isn’t something reserved for people who want to look muscular. Maintaining muscle supports the practical business of living. It’s what allows us to carry our own shopping, lift a suitcase, climb stairs, get up from the floor and continue doing the things we currently take for granted. Those things might not feel particularly significant in our forties or fifties, but the work we do now helps shape what our bodies are capable of later.

It also means I no longer judge the success of exercise by how exhausted I feel afterwards. I don’t think waking up unable to move is evidence that I’ve had a better workout than someone who trained appropriately and recovered well. The question I’m much more interested in is whether my body can adapt to what I’ve asked it to do. That means considering the exercise itself alongside nutrition, protein, sleep, stress and recovery. They aren’t separate conversations; they’re all part of the same process.

Creating demand without allowing sufficient recovery doesn’t make us more disciplined.

Recovery was perhaps the hardest lesson Chronic Fatigue Syndrome taught me. Rest can feel passive, particularly when you’re someone who is used to achieving things by doing more. Yet recovery isn’t the absence of training. It’s part of training. The workout provides the stimulus, but the body needs time and resources to respond to that stimulus. Continually creating demand without allowing sufficient recovery doesn’t make us more disciplined; eventually it simply creates more demand for the body to manage.

None of this means women should be frightened of exercising hard. Quite the opposite. I want women to feel strong and capable, and that requires challenging the body. There will be workouts that are difficult. There will be days when muscles ache. There will be times when we deliberately increase the intensity because that’s how adaptation occurs. The distinction is between purposeful challenge and believing that exhaustion itself is the goal.

It also means accepting that what our body needs won’t always be identical from one week to the next. There will be times when we’re sleeping well, eating well, feeling strong and capable of doing more. There will be other periods when work is demanding, sleep is poor or life is simply placing more pressure on us. I don’t see adjusting exercise during those periods as failure. I see it as understanding the whole picture and training intelligently within it.

Perhaps the biggest change for me has been in why I exercise at all. I’m no longer exercising primarily for a smaller version of myself. I’m exercising for my future self. I want to travel, work, carry my own bags, move confidently, get up from the floor and remain independent for as long as possible. I want a body that allows me to keep participating fully in my own life.

When that becomes the goal, exercise starts to look very different. The question is no longer, “How many calories did I burn?” It becomes, “What am I building?”

Strength. Muscle. Mobility. Cardiovascular fitness. Resilience. Confidence in what my body can do.

Those are outcomes worth training for.

A question to leave you with

Perhaps this week, rather than asking whether you’re exercising enough, ask yourself something slightly different:

What am I training my body to be able to do ten, twenty or thirty years from now?

For me, that’s a much more interesting measure of a successful workout.

Claire
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" We’ve come to associate it with diagnosis, medication and managing disease rather than recognising it as something that affects every one of us, every single day.

But blood sugar has a much broader influence on how we feel than many people realise. It took me a few years to realise that it needed to be the main area of focus when it comes to creating the foundations of health.

Become a hormone pioneer and get updates straight to your inbox.

Long before someone develops diabetes, they may notice that their energy fluctuates throughout the day. They may feel hungry again an hour after eating breakfast, rely on another coffee to get through the afternoon or find themselves searching the kitchen cupboards for something sweet by three o’clock. They may assume they’re lacking willpower or simply making poor food choices, when in reality, their body is responding exactly as it has been designed to.

That’s one of the reasons I believe we’ve often been asking the wrong questions.

Instead of asking why we’re craving sugar, perhaps we should be asking why our body is asking for quick energy in the first place. That simple shift entirely changes the conversation.

One of the biggest changes I made to my own nutrition wasn’t eating less. It wasn’t counting calories or tracking macros or following another fashionable diet. It was understanding how the food I was eating influenced the way I felt. Looking back, I spent far too many years believing that if I simply ate fewer calories everything else would fall into place. It didn’t. What eventually changed was the quality of my nutrition.

Why does my body want a ‘quick fix’?

I started building meals around protein rather than carbohydrates. I paid much more attention to eating real food and much less attention to dieting. Almost without realising it, my energy became more consistent, I stopped thinking about food all day and those sudden afternoon crashes became far less common. That experience fundamentally changed the advice I give today.

When women tell me they’re constantly craving sugar, I don’t immediately think about willpower. I think about physiology. I wonder whether they’re eating enough protein, whether they’re fueling themselves consistently throughout the day, how they’re sleeping, how stressed they are and whether their body is constantly chasing the quickest source of energy because it isn’t receiving what it genuinely needs. It’s a much more compassionate way of looking at health because it stops us blaming ourselves for symptoms that often have a biological explanation.

This is also why I’m opposed to reducing nutrition to calories alone. Calories tell us how much energy food contains, but they tell us very little about how that food supports the body. A meal built around quality protein, healthy fats and whole foods sends a very different message to the body than one dominated by highly processed carbohydrates, even if the calorie content is identical. For me, that’s where the conversation becomes much more interesting.

Nutrition isn’t simply about weight management, it’s about creating an environment where the body can function well.

Stable blood sugar supports concentration, consistent energy, better appetite regulation and, in my experience, makes it much easier to make good food choices throughout the day. When we’re constantly riding the rollercoaster of energy highs and crashes, healthy decisions become much harder because our body is simply trying to solve an immediate problem.

That’s why I don’t believe cravings are something to fight against, more often than not, they’re information. They’re one of the ways our body communicates that something deserves our attention.

Perhaps that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learnt over the years, that our bodies are rarely working against us. More often, they’re doing everything they can to keep us going with the resources we’ve given them. When we begin to understand those signals instead of ignoring them, we stop seeing our body as the problem and start recognising it as our greatest source of information.

Give your body the consistency it needs

For me, stable blood sugar isn’t about following another set of food rules or striving for dietary perfection, it’s about giving the body the consistency it needs to do what it was designed to do.

And when we do that, we often discover that we feel better in ways we weren’t expecting—not because we’ve followed another diet, but because we’ve started working with our biology instead of against it.

A question to leave you with

The next time you find yourself reaching for something sweet or another coffee, pause for a moment before you blame yourself. Instead, ask:

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

That single question can start to change the way you think about food forever.

If I asked you whether you were stressed, I suspect your mind would immediately go to the obvious things like work, family responsibilities, finances, relationships or simply feeling overwhelmed by the pace of life. That’s how most of us have come to define stress, and understandably so. It’s the definition we’ve heard for years. However, this is far from the whole story.

One of the biggest shifts in my own thinking came when I stopped viewing stress as something we simply feel and started recognising it as something our body experiences.

Our bodies don’t just respond to emotional pressure. They respond to poor sleep, unstable blood sugar, nutritional deficiencies, chronic illness, over-exercising, under-eating, infections, long working days and the constant pressure of trying to keep up with modern life; including pollution, pesticides, EMF radiation and light toxicity. Every one of those places a demand on the body. Every one of these stimuli requires a response. When I started to understand this distinction, I stopped using the word stress and instead started to talk about ‘stressors’.

Emotional stress is not just a ‘feeling’ but something physical the body experiences.

Looking back, this understanding completely reframed my own health journey. Twenty-two years ago, I developed chronic fatigue syndrome after a traumatic labour giving birth to my daughter. I thought the fatigue was a direct response to this experience, but I now see it differently. My body had spent years responding, adapting and compensating. It had become incredibly good at surviving, but much less able to recover.

That experience shaped the way I live today and how I work. When women come to see me, I’m interested in far more than their hormone levels. Of course, hormones matter, but they never operate in isolation. They are responding to the environment they’re working in, and that environment is influenced by every decision we make throughout the day.

I want to know how someone sleeps, because sleep influences almost every system in the body. I’m interested in whether they’re eating enough protein, whether their blood sugar is stable, whether they’re preserving muscle as they move through midlife, whether they’re constantly relying on caffeine to keep going, if they are surrounded by toxic chemicals, and whether their lifestyle allows enough opportunity for genuine recovery. These aren’t separate conversations; they’re all part of the same one.

Have we been asking the wrong questions about stress?

This is where I think we’ve unintentionally made women’s health more complicated than it needs to be. We often tell women they need to “reduce their stress”, but what does that mean? Most women can’t simply remove the responsibilities that come with careers, families, ageing parents or running businesses. Life doesn’t become less demanding because we know stress isn’t good for us. Perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking how we eliminate stress, maybe we should be asking how we help the body cope with the stress that life inevitably brings. That feels like a far more realistic and compassionate place to start. It’s no longer about striving for a perfectly calm life that simply doesn’t exist; it’s about building a body that’s resilient enough to adapt and recover.

Subscribe to get the latest news from Claire straight to your inbox.

That’s why I constantly talk about coming back to the foundations. Good nutrition isn’t simply about eating well; it’s about giving the body the raw materials it needs to function. Stable blood sugar isn’t just about preventing energy dips; it’s about reducing another physiological demand. Preserving muscle isn’t only important for healthy ageing; it’s part of supporting metabolic health. Walking, strength training, restorative sleep and allowing time to recover are not isolated pieces of advice. Together they create an environment in which every system in the body, including our hormones, has a better opportunity to function well.

This isn’t about creating the perfect lifestyle, because perfection doesn’t exist. There will always be periods when life becomes busier than we’d like, sleep is disrupted or work takes over. The aim isn’t to remove every stressor. The aim is to reduce the overall load on the body wherever we reasonably can, while building the resilience to cope with the things we can’t control.

I’ve found that this shift in thinking often brings women a huge sense of relief. It moves them away from the belief that their body is somehow failing them and towards the understanding that their body is doing exactly what it has been designed to do. It’s responding to the environment it’s living in.

For me, that’s one of the most empowering ways to think about health. We can’t always choose what life throws at us, but we can influence the environment our body has to move through. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn’t finding another supplement or another prescription, it can be as simple as understanding what our body has been trying to tell us all along.

A question to leave you with

This week, rather than asking yourself, “Am I stressed?”, try asking a different question:

“What is my body responding to internally and externally right now?”

The answer may give you a very different perspective.

Claire

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" For many women, HRT has been genuinely life-changing; relieving hot flushes, improving sleep, stabilising mood and. helping them feel more like themselves again. It has also corrected years of misunderstanding and unnecessary fear, allowing more women to access treatment that can make a meaningful difference to their quality of life.

Yet there is another conversation that receives far less attention. Every week I meet women who tell me they’re taking HRT but they still don’t feel completely well. They’re often confused and anxious because they assumed hormones would solve everything

“Hormones are only one part of a much bigger picture”

HRT is designed to replace hormones where they’re needed, but our health is influenced by far more than hormones alone; sleep, nutrition, stress, our gut health, blood sugar regulation and the way our nervous system responds to everyday life all contribute to how we feel. These systems don’t work independently, they are constantly communicating with one another. If a woman is metabolically unstable or has gut issues, HRT cannot work effectively. This is the issue when women see private doctors who don’t look at metabolic and gut health; they can find they still aren’t getting results.

Get the newsletter straight to your inbox and join in the conversation by subscribing.

This is one of the biggest shifts in my own clinical thinking over the years. Earlier in my career, like many practitioners, I focussed heavily on hormones themselves. As my understanding grew and as I continued to learn from my own health journey I realised that hormones are only one part of a much bigger picture, where deeper questions must be asked.

That doesn’t diminish the value of HRT.

Quite the opposite, it allows us to have more expectations and, ultimately, achieve better outcomes. When we provide our bodies with better nutrition, when sleep improves, when stress is managed more effectively and when the right movement becomes part of daily life, many women find they feel better overall because the body is receiving multi-faceted support.

Before next week’s article I’d love to hear your thoughts on HRT, especially:

If you’re taking HRT, what surprised you most about your experience?

Was there anything you expected it to do that it didn’t?

Claire

Thanks for reading! They’ll tell me they’re eating less than they used to, trying to make healthier choices and doing everything they believe they should be doing, yet they still don’t feel great. Sometimes they’re talking about weight, but just as often they’re describing low energy, afternoon slumps, brain fog or feeling permanently hungry despite their best efforts.

Their frustration is understandable because, for decades, we’ve been told that health is largely a question of eating less and exercising more. If the scales don’t move, the assumption is that we’ve eaten too much. If we’re still feeling rubbish, perhaps we simply need more discipline. If one approach doesn’t work, there’s always another diet, another set of rules or another promise that this time will be different.

The difficulty is that our bodies don’t work in this way.

“The quality of our food and which macronutrients our meal consists of plays a much more important role”

Food is far more than a source of calories. Every time we eat, we’re providing our body with information. That information influences our blood sugar, our stress response, our ability to build and maintain muscle, our concentration, our appetite and countless other physiological processes that determine how we feel from one day to the next. Looking only at calories is a little like judging a book solely by the number of pages it contains. It tells us something, but it certainly doesn’t tell us everything. The quality of our food and which macronutrients our meal consists of plays a much more important role. My biggest “aha!” moment was when I realised the following phrase which I have taught thousands of clients and students: “Every time I put food in my mouth I have a hormonal response, that response is either fat burn and energy or fat storage and inflammation”.

Share

This was one of the biggest lessons I learnt during my own health journey. Living with chronic fatigue forced me to think very differently about health. At the time, I was also trying to deal with huge weight gain. I couldn’t work out why I was piling on weight and had no energy despite doing ‘everything right’. Like so many women, I hoped there would be one answer that would explain everything. Instead, I slowly realised that my body was responding to a combination of factors rather than a single problem. The food I ate, how I managed stress, the quality of my sleep, my movement, my hormones and my overall health were constantly influencing one another.

That experience completely changed the way I practise today.

When a woman comes to see me, I’m rarely interested in beginning with the question, “How many calories are you eating?” Instead, I want to understand how she feels throughout the day. Does she wake feeling refreshed? Is she hungry an hour after breakfast? Does she rely on caffeine to keep going? Does she feel energised after meals or ready to reach for something sweet by mid-afternoon? Those conversations usually reveal far more about what’s happening inside the body than a calorie count ever could.

None of this is to suggest that calories don’t matter. They do… (a bit). The problem arises when we reduce an incredibly complex biological system to a single equation and ignore everything else that influences it: stress, sleep, muscle mass, hormonal changes, blood sugar regulation and the nutritional quality of our diet all affect how our body functions. When those factors are overlooked, eating less often becomes an increasingly frustrating and dangerous strategy.

Perhaps that’s why I encourage women to think differently about food. Rather than asking “How can I eat less?” I think a far more helpful question is “How can I better support my body?”. It’s a subtle shift in perspective but it changes the conversation completely. Food stops becoming something to fear or control and becomes one of the many ways we can nourish ourselves and support long-term health.

It also moves us away from the idea of perfection. Real life has never been perfect and it never will be. Some days we’ll cook from scratch, sit down to eat and feel wonderfully organised. On other days, lunch might be eaten between meetings or dinner might be whatever can be prepared quickly after a long day. Those individual moments don’t define our health. What matters is the pattern we create over time and the understanding that sits behind the choices we make.

“Food…becomes one of the many ways we can nourish ourselves and support long-term health”

That’s one of the reasons I created this Substack community. I wanted women to have somewhere calm, practical and evidence-informed to begin. Not another programme telling them what they should and shouldn’t eat, but an opportunity to understand why their body responds the way it does. Once we understand the physiology, the decisions become much easier because they’re based on knowledge rather than fear.

If you haven’t subscribed and worked through my free course yet, I’d love you to join us. It takes less than an hour to complete and provides the foundations for many of the conversations we’ll be having over the coming months.

I’d also love to hear from you. What belief about healthy eating has had the biggest influence on your own health journey, and has your thinking changed over time? Your comments often inspire future articles, so please do join the conversation.

Claire

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" I wrote about my journey through chronic fatigue and how, after eventually being diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), I began to see women’s health in a completely different way.

I was genuinely overwhelmed by the response. Thank you to everyone who commented, sent me a message or shared part of their own story. It reminded me that although our experiences may be different, so many of us have the same underlying questions.

The one that came up time and time again was simply:

“Where do I start?”

It’s such a simple question, but I think it’s one of the hardest to answer. If you’ve spent any time trying to understand why you don’t feel like yourself, you’ll know exactly what I mean. There is no shortage of advice. In fact, there has never been more information available than there is today.

One expert tells you it’s your hormones. Another says you need to heal your gut. Someone else tells you it’s stress, while another insists it’s your blood sugar. You’re advised to cut out gluten, dairy or carbohydrates, to eat more protein, to fast, or not to fast. Every week there seems to be another headline telling you what you should or shouldn’t be doing. It’s exhausting!

Over time, many women stop trusting themselves, not because they don’t care about their health, but because they’re trying to make sense of advice that often feels conflicting or incomplete.

I know that feeling because I’ve lived it. When I was first diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, I genuinely believed there would be one clear path. I thought someone would explain what was happening to my body and tell me exactly what to do next. Instead, I found myself collecting pieces of information without ever feeling as though I understood the whole picture.

As my own health journey unfolded, I began asking different questions. Rather than looking for the next thing to fix, I wanted to understand why my body was responding the way it was. That change in thinking didn’t just help me personally; it shaped the rest of my career.

I realised the problem wasn’t that there wasn’t enough information. The problem was that very few people were connecting the dots.

For years I’ve watched women being given advice about individual parts of their health: hormones, nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, gut health. Every one of those conversations has value, but they don’t exist in isolation. Our bodies don’t work in separate compartments, so why do we so often approach our health that way? This is why I believe the first step isn’t changing everything at once. It’s understanding your body.

When you understand why something is happening, your decisions become much easier. You stop chasing every new trend, you stop feeling guilty because you haven’t followed the latest advice, and you begin making choices with confidence instead of confusion.

That belief is the reason I’ve created this Substack account and my free Healthy Hormones Reset course.

I haven’t created it because I think one short course can answer every question. It can’t. I’ve created it because I believe every woman deserves a calm, evidence-informed place to begin.

In less than an hour, I’ll walk you through the foundations I wish someone had explained to me years ago. We’ll explore why hormones don’t work in isolation, how blood sugar influences far more than your weight, why stress has such a profound effect on the body, how nutrition supports hormone health, and the simple lifestyle habits that create a stronger foundation for long-term wellbeing.

If you’ve found your way here, thank you.

I’ve been thinking about writing this for a very long time.

Not because the world needs another newsletter about hormones, but because I believe women deserve something better than the conversations we’re currently having about their health.

Every week I meet women who tell me exactly the same thing.

“I’ve read everything.”

“I’ve listened to the podcasts.”

“I’ve followed all the experts.”

“I’ve spent hundreds of pounds on supplements.”

“But I still don’t understand what’s happening to my body.”

That sentence has stayed with me for years.

Because, if I’m honest, I know exactly how it feels.

My journey didn’t begin as a clinician.

It began as a patient.

I was experiencing life altering chronic fatigue which I had tried everything to fix, eventually I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) and sent home by the doctor with HRT being told it was ‘an early menopause’.

Suddenly I was trying to understand something that none of my friends were talking about. Like so many women, I assumed someone would explain everything. I thought there would be a clear roadmap.

There wasn’t.

Instead, I found myself collecting fragments of information. One person talked about hormones, someone else talked about nutrition. Another talked about stress, another about exercise.

Each piece made sense on its own, but nobody seemed to explain how they all fitted together.

I wanted someone to join the dots.

Then everything changed again.

Just as I thought I was beginning to understand my body, my condition would fluctuate. I was dealing with intense energy swings, mood swings, weight gain and brain fog.

That experience challenged everything I thought I knew.

I realised that hormones were only part of the story. Why did stress make everything worse? Why did the food I ate change how I felt? Why did my energy disappear even when I was doing everything I thought was “right”?

Why were women being given advice in isolated pieces instead of being helped to understand how the whole body works together?

Those questions became impossible to ignore.

Looking back, they changed my life.

They shaped my career.

They led me into clinical practice.

They inspired me to educate other practitioners.

They became the foundation of everything I teach today.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting thousands of women through perimenopause, menopause, PMDD, PCOS, Premature Ovarian Insufficiency and many other hormone-related challenges. And despite every woman being different, one thing has remained remarkably consistent: most women don’t need more information.

They need clarity.

We’ve reached a strange point in health education.

There has never been so much information available yet there has never seemed to be so much confusion.

Social media rewards short clips and simple answers but real health doesn’t work like that.

Hormones don’t exist in isolation, neither does your metabolism or your stress response, or your nutrition. Everything influences everything else.

When we only look at one piece, we miss the bigger picture.

That’s why so many women still feel lost.

This is what I want this community to become.

Not another place full of quick fixes.

Not another source of fear.

Not somewhere that tells you to buy another supplement every week.

Instead, I want this to be a place where we slow down.

Where we understand.

Where complicated science becomes practical.

Where we ask better questions.

Where women finally feel that someone is explaining their bodies in a way that makes sense.

Every week I’ll be sharing the knowledge I’ve gained through my own experiences, my clinical work and my years of teaching practitioners.

We’ll talk about hormones, of course, but we’ll also explore nutrition, metabolic health, blood sugar, stress, movement, sleep and all the other pieces that influence how we feel every single day.

Because you deserve to understand the whole picture.

If you’ve been feeling confused…

If you’ve ever wondered why your symptoms don’t seem to fit into one neat box…

If you’ve felt dismissed, overwhelmed or unsure where to turn…

I hope you’ll feel at home here.

I’m so pleased you’ve joined me at the very beginning. Next week, I’ll be sharing something I’ve been quietly building for a long time. I think it’s the missing piece I’ve wanted to create ever since my own health journey began.

Until then, I’d love to hear from you.

What is the one thing about your hormones or your health that you wish someone had explained years ago?

Leave me a comment below.

I’ll be reading every single one.

Claire

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
