Every profession has its own vocabulary. Human services has no shortage of buzzwords. The System. Person-Centered. Inclusion. Equity. Quality. Choice. Community. Belonging.

These words appear in strategic plans, conference presentations, regulations, and mission statements. Yet after more than two decades working alongside people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, I have learned that the meaning of these words is ultimately revealed in ordinary moments.

A conversation during a team meeting.

A supervisor responding to a frustrated employee.

A direct support professional deciding whether to do something for a person or with them.

A family wondering if someone truly sees their son or daughter beyond a diagnosis.

This series is my invitation to explore those moments.

I write from many perspectives.

I write as a Black American woman whose lived experience shapes how I see power, belonging, identity, and opportunity in our communities.

I write as someone who has supported people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in community-based organizations through direct support, program coordination, leadership, training, organizational and strategic learning, community building, and systems change.

I write as a learning and development consultant who designs curriculum, develops training for managed care organizations, facilitates workshops, and coaches professionals, neurodivergent people, and their families.

I write as a lifelong student of Social Role Valorization (SRV), PASSING, and Person-Centered thinking, planning, and practices. I’ve had the privilege of learning and teaching SRV, experiencing PASSING (SRV’s part 2), preparing to lead a PASSING, and studying and teaching person-centeredness for the purposes of supporting others. These frameworks have challenged me to continually examine my own biases and assumptions, recognize the influence of social roles, and approach every person with curiosity rather than certainty.

I also write from my formidable experience at Inclusion Seekers powered by Starfire, an organization that fundamentally changed how I understood community when supporting others. There I witnessed inclusion not as a program to be delivered, but as relationships intentionally cultivated. Genuine belonging cannot be manufactured through services alone. It grows organically when people discover one another’s gifts and build lives together.

Over the years, I have learned that the most important lessons rarely come from standing at the front of a classroom. They emerge while listening. They come from people receiving services, family members, direct support professionals working long shifts, frontline supervisors balancing impossible demands, executives wrestling with systems, and community members willing to imagine something better.

These articles will not offer simple answers. Instead, I hope to ask better questions.

What does dignity actually look like in practice?

How do our organizational systems either expand or limit people’s opportunities?

What can disability services teach the rest of society about relationships, leadership, and community?

How does cultural humility change not only our interactions with others, but our understanding of ourselves?

Why do seemingly small daily decisions have such profound effects on a person’s social roles, identity, and future?

Sometimes I’ll share stories from the field while protecting the identities of marginalized and vulnerable people. Sometimes I’ll reflect on leadership, coaching, curriculum design, or organizational culture. Sometimes I’ll review books and documentaries related to human services. Other times I’ll connect ideas from my learning or my own experiences navigating life.

My hope is that these reflections encourage us to move beyond compliance toward conviction, beyond services toward belonging, and beyond good intentions toward thoughtful action. Human services has never simply been about delivering support.

At its best, human service is about supporting people to build lives of meaning, contribution, connection, and possibility.

That is the lens I write through. I invite you to look through it with me.
