“What’s the point of thinking about what I think about?” they asked. “For me, that’s where you cross the line into overthinking. The people who love life—the people who truly love life—you never hear about them thinking about their own thoughts and trying to understand them. They are just out there living in the moment. They’re too busy living their best life to think about what they’re thinking about and what not…”

“Thinking about what you think about is called metacognition, and it’s helpful because when you do it, you can identify the patterns and habits you have in what you think about. You can then make changes if you want to or at the very least understand yourself better. After all, you are how you think,” I said.

“Wait... why are you telling me all of this?!”

My butt never felt so sore before or since.

I felt like I was limping down the mountain even though it looked like I was properly walking. I was flanked on each side by the ski patrol. They were both significantly taller than I was and were radiant against the snowy landscape in their bright red uniforms.

People going up along the mountain trail were staring at us as we made our way down. There were a lot of people there skiing and snowboarding, so there were a lot of people staring.

It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life.

“I’m good,” I told the ski patrol. “I know my way back down.” But they insisted it was protocol to escort me safely all the way back down to the bottom of the mountain.

“Do you ever notice that there is a hierarchy among our friends?” they asked. “Like everyone calls each other ‘close friends’ but there are obviously two or three people in the group who aren’t as close to the members of the group as the others.”

“You mean, I am one of the people who isn’t as close to the others in the group? I notice that every time we hang out,” I said.

“It doesn’t bother you?!”

“It definitely has,” I replied. “But I weighed the pros and cons of our group of friends a few years ago, and I decided that I would still stay connected to the group, but from a distance. I have found another group of friends since then that I spend a lot more time with. I still think our group of friends is alright, but I saw the writing on the wall—I was never going to be a full-fledged member.”

“Wow… you’ve really thought about this… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised because you overthink about everything.”

“Guilty,” I admitted. “But you can learn a lot about your relationships from the little, unspoken details you find in the interactions you have. Take Charlie for example. Five years ago, Charlie didn’t invite me to his wedding. Everyone else in the group was either in the wedding party or at the very least, invited as a guest. I had a few people in the group try to add me as their ‘plus one,’ but it didn’t feel right. Charlie even approached me with a belated invite and apologized. I accepted his apology, but I still opted not to go. It felt too much like a ‘pity invite’ to me. However, my relationship with Charlie stayed intact. After all, he did apologize. We still hang out in group settings, but I haven’t hung out with Charlie one-on-one for like six or seven years now. I wouldn’t call it a ‘micro-aggression’ because Charlie is cool with me and he isn’t trying to harm or marginalize me. He is, however, placing himself at a distance from me—we just don’t connect the same way we used to. We grew apart. I wouldn’t call it ‘micro-ghosting’ either because our relationship has stayed intact. The way the relationship is constructed just changed. I still get a ‘happy birthday’ text from him every year and he still texts me to tune in when he’s watching a great college basketball game because we both still enjoy that.”

“Didn’t you also just tell me a month ago that Tasha didn’t respond to your ‘happy birthday’ message on her Facebook page?! Weren’t you the only one she didn’t reply to? I think that could be ‘micro-ghosting.’”

“I was, but it’s not, and I say that because Tasha just talked to me for an hour last night at Jacob’s party. When her partner isn’t around, she still looks for me whenever we are at the same events and gives me a big hug like she used to when we were closer friends. Tasha and I are still friends, but her partner doesn’t like me, so she has maintained a distance from me ever since they got together. It’s not micro-ghosting because she isn’t ending the friendship, but the complexion of the friendship has changed because her partner doesn’t like me at all. It hurt, but I’ve accepted that. I don’t identify it as a ‘micro-aggression’ either because I don’t think her non-response was done maliciously.”

“Yeah, but she ignored your birthday message on Facebook!”

“She Micro-ignored me,” I replied. “Most of the time, ignoring someone has a negative connotation, but I do think there are instances when it’s used as a neutral signal to set the tone of a relationship you otherwise want to maintain. I call that ‘Micro-ignoring’ someone. Micro-ignoring is the habit of signaling someone’s lower relational importance through small patterns of non-acknowledgment and omission. Micro-ignoring doesn’t always require ill will to be involved and the relationship remains intact, but there is a signal to indicate the relationship has changed and will be more distant moving forward.”

“Micro-ignoring still sounds harmful to me,” they said.

“It can be, depending on your expectations of the relationship. It can easily feel like micro-ghosting or a micro-aggression if the recipient chooses to take it that way. But if you take the time to look closer at the relationship and understand the other person’s intent, it may be a simple case of Micro-ignoring. You still decide in all instances if you want to keep the relationship.”

“If I were you, I’d dump both Charlie and Tasha as friends. I wouldn’t tolerate any form of being ignored, even if it’s just meant to distance themselves from me. Charlie should have asked you about his wedding in advance and Tasha should have at least explained why she wasn’t going to reply to your birthday greeting.”

“Ideally, that would have happened in both instances,” I acknowledged. “But life doesn’t always work that way. I also don’t think we need everything explained to us. There is a freedom you have when you simply let someone else’s actions explain to you where they stand. You can hear their rationalizations or excuses for it, but the action remains what it is, and you still have a choice to make.”

“So you chose to stay in our group of friends…”

“Because you are worth it,” I said.

All the people who shouldn’t have kids are raising kids and everyone who should have kids doesn’t have kids. Society is doomed if only for that reason alone. It’s like reverse evolution. The best genetic variants in terms of intellect die off at the end of heredity lines when the greatest minds determine that society isn’t worth procreating in. That’s why people were better when we were kids—all the wrong people in our parents’ generation and our generation had kids.”
