For this coloring page, I tried to create an image that captures the sound of meaning of the shofar’s blasts. To accomplish that, I included lots of patterns and opportunities for kids to choose their own colors and create a page that's uniquely theirs.

The famous Talmudic story about Rabbi Akiva and the fox is my inspiration for this month’s coloring page. The Talmud describes how Rabbi Akiva and three other Rabbis visit the place where the temple used to stand. His friends view the wreckage, and begin to cry. But then a fox runs by and Rabbi Akiva begins to laugh.

Why are you laughing? his friends ask him.

He explains that the fox reminds him of a prophecy, which said the temple would be destroyed, and foxes would come.

Now, here is a fox! That prophecy has come true!

But there is also a second prophecy that says the people will someday return and rebuild.

If the first, sad prophecy came true? Then the second, happy prophecy will someday come true too!

When Akiva’s friends heard this? They said, you have comforted us.

In response, I have decided that for this Hanukkah, I would make the same coloring page two ways: one full of details for kids (and grown-ups!) to enjoy coloring in, and a second of a menorah that has space for colorists to draw their own imaginings and designs.

I’m curious: which direction do YOU prefer? Which approach should I take as I make new pages going forward? Which do you find more enjoyable?
