It is all one and the same: lives ended by bullets in a country where violence has become routine. But we will act as if one life mattered more — not because he was more important than those children, but because his death was louder. That is the spectacle of political violence.

This is not to say Charlie Kirk deserved this fate. He did not. Violence is never justified. But we cannot ignore that his death fits neatly into the narrative of America’s culture wars. He was on the front lines of many of the issues that divided us. He thrived in the friction of division, even if his intentions were pure. And in today’s America, populism is met with populism. That is the dangerous cycle we are living through.

Make no mistake, the left has not been innocent in this. Democrats, too, have greatly contributed to the cycle of division. But this is not about tallying blame or keeping score. It’s about survival of civil society itself, where political conflict must stay in the realm of speech, not bloodshed.

This is no different from what we have already seen. Just recently, two politicians in Minnesota were killed. Before that, Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. These are not isolated events. They are symptoms of the same disease: a nation where political violence, once unthinkable, is becoming routine.

It is often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Until we make structural changes, this cycle will continue. And now, I worry not only that it will continue, but that its pace and its scale will grow.

In 2023 alone, more than 46,000 Americans were killed by guns, the third highest number ever recorded, according to the CDC. About 18,000 were homicides, the rest suicides, accidents or undetermined. The Gun Violence Archive also tracked more than 600 mass shootings that year, nearly two a day.

Against those numbers, no single story should feel surprising anymore. And yet every time, we act shocked.

If the violence is relentless, then the guardrails of our democracy must be even stronger. That begins with remembering what sets America apart: the primacy of words over weapons.

We have a First Amendment in this country. Words should be answered with words, not bullets. James Madison wrote that freedom of speech was not only a right but the “guardian of every other right.” To forget that is to undermine the very idea of America.

A recent Pew survey found that 66 percent of Americans see political violence as a threat to democracy, yet nearly a quarter believe it may be justified in some cases. That is the road to ruin. It proves that the danger is not only in our weapons but in our minds, in the slow erosion of boundaries that once kept political conflict within the realm of speech.

I want to address one point of division that emerged almost immediately after Kirk’s death, when Speaker Mike Johnson called for a moment of prayer in Congress. Democrats rejected it, and Republicans were outraged. But here we must remember our Constitution. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment bars government institutions from endorsing or mandating religious expression. That doesn’t forbid private prayer, but it prevents Congress from appearing to privilege one faith, leader or moment of worship over others. To truly honor Kirk’s legacy, we must respect the Constitution itself, even when it contradicts the beliefs he often proclaimed.

Maybe this is the moment for all of us to go back and read the words of our founding fathers, the basis and the philosophy of this country.

George Washington, in his farewell address, cautioned against “the spirit of party,” which he said would distract public councils and enfeeble government. Abraham Lincoln warned that if America were to fall, it would not be from foreign enemies but from within, through our own self-destruction.

More than two centuries later, we are living in the world they warned about.

I don’t pretend to have the answer on a policy level. I don’t think anyone does. But we need to look at everything objectively, whether that means stronger gun laws, better mental health support, harsher criminal penalties, or reforming political rhetoric.

What I can say is this: go to someone with differing opinions and tell them you respect their views. Tell them that this needs to stop. Tell them we must begin to put country over party, and have a civil conversation about this issue. It is OK to agree to disagree. It is not OK to abandon respect.

We must demand better. This is the United States, the greatest country in the world. We are a melting pot, and differences will always be present. But we must never forget we are Americans first — that is how a nation survives.

At the start of 2025, the index sat near 109.2, but it wrapped up the year crashing all the way down near 97.8—a massive drop of over 10%. For context, that whole year marked one of the worst sustained slides for the dollar in modern history. Even with a slight bounce in 2026, that major drop remains a big, blinking red flag for global trade.

Still, history shows how quickly small slides can become large ones.

For example, between 2002 and 2008, the dollar fell about 40% vs major currencies. During the Carter years through the late 1970s, it dropped by about 33%, and another roughly 51% of erosion occurred between 1985 and 1992. Compared to those, our current drop so far is painful, but we’re not (yet) in that territory.

Thing is, most Americans won’t notice until they do. A weaker dollar doesn’t hit like a layoff or a housing crash. Instead, it creeps into gas prices, into electronics, and into the aisles of your grocery store, so gradually that by the time you notice, the purchasing power you counted on has already been shaved away. That iPhone you thought was expensive last year? Wait until the next model. And while wages might look flat, they’ll feel smaller because that’s what inflation does when your currency’s shrinking; it eats your purchasing power without asking.

But why now? What changed?

Plenty, honestly. And not all of it’s easy to summarize. But let’s start with the Fed. Trump’s made it clear he wants lower interest rates. Soon. Doesn’t seem to matter that inflation’s still a problem or that the national debt is climbing fast. The market now expects a couple of rate cuts by the end of the year. And each time Trump takes a swing at Jerome Powell, it pushes the idea of an “independent Fed” a little further into myth.

That kind of political pressure spooks capital. Fast.

Then came the tariffs. On August 1, broad reciprocal tariffs kicked in, a universal 10% rate for most imports, and much steeper rates (up to ~50%) for goods from countries with which the U.S. has large trade deficits or which failed to reach deals.

What’s confusing (and what markets hate) is that many of the enforcement boundaries are vague — which products get exemptions, which countries get deals, how penalties are assigned. That ambiguity breeds risk.

If that sounds chaotic, that’s because it is. And markets don’t like chaos. They don’t even like mystery. They like rules, schedules, certainty. The dollar is a reflection of that trust. And right now, the trust is wobbling.

But beyond economics, there’s a deeper issue. Institutions. Or maybe more accurately: how we treat them.

When Trump calls journalists “enemies of the people”, or attacks judges by name, or undermines government agencies, it doesn’t just fire up his base. It chips away at the image of American governance. From abroad, it looks like instability. Not the kind with riots or tanks, but something slower. A quiet erosion of norms. A weakening of systems. But it shows up in the dollar.

Now, some will argue this is actually good for exports. They’re not wrong. A cheaper dollar can help sell American goods abroad. Unfortunately, exports make up less than 10% of U.S. GDP. We buy way more than we sell. And when the dollar falls, the stuff we import- fuel, copper, tech- costs more.

Another way to say it is that raw materials are dollar-priced. If the dollar’s worth less, you need more of them to get the same stuff. Simple math.

And while all that’s playing out, foreign governments are watching closely, and acting quietly. Lately, they’ve been shifting away from long-term U.S. debt and loading up on short-term Treasuries instead. It’s subtle, but telling. A sign they’re hedging.

Not panicking, not dumping, just stepping back. That’s how slow exits begin.

Meanwhile, Trump keeps pushing for looser monetary policy. The Fed’s in a tough spot. Cut rates too soon, and inflation heats up again. Don’t cut, and Trump turns up the volume. Either way, it’s pressure. And pressure plus uncertainty? That’s a recipe for a softening dollar.

Add it all up and what do we see? Not a grand economic plan. Just improvisation. One week it’s tariffs. The next, tax cuts. Then it’s rate cuts. Then blame the Fed. Then a budget bill that adds $2.4 trillion to the deficit. Nothing lines up. Nothing follows a throughline.

This isn’t strategy. It’s improvisation disguised as control.

And the dollar, more than any speech, poll, or slogan, is reflecting that disconnect.

Republicans used to be the party of fiscal restraint. Of market trust. Now they’re co-signing policies that push investors away and hollow out credibility. That’s not conservative. That’s reactive.

The good news? This isn’t irreversible. The dollar can bounce back. But that takes something we haven’t seen in a while: policy that’s deliberate. Institutions that are respected. Leaders who understand that markets don’t just follow numbers; they follow signals.

And until that signal strengthens, investors will keep stepping back.

Corruption isn’t the exception. It’s the operating system. And we can’t fix that with anger alone. We need actual rules.

The truth is, outrage has become a commodity. Media feeds on it. Politicians use it to stall. Writers, too often, get stuck pointing fingers instead of offering something better. Somewhere along the way, solving problems stopped being the point. Keeping them alive became the strategy.

Corruption isn’t new, of course. But in Donald Trump’s second term, it feels like the curtain has been ripped down entirely. Whether you support him or not, the self-enrichment is hard to ignore. He’s backed a meme coin, charged for VIP dinners, and posted market-moving comments like they were punchlines. Since returning to office, estimates say his net worth has jumped to nearly $5 billion — up from $2.3 billion when he started. That kind of leap doesn’t happen from a government salary. It comes from turning influence into income.

And yes, before you say it, the Bidens should be scrutinized, too. So should Nancy Pelosi’s decades of well-timed stock trades. Trump doesn’t get a pass just because others played the game. That’s exactly the problem. Everyone’s playing.

This isn’t just a double standard. It’s a broken standard. One that’s hollowed out public trust, one ethical compromise at a time. And once that trust is gone? It’s almost impossible to get back.

I don’t think we can eliminate corruption. But I do think we can make it harder to get away with. That’s why I’m proposing the Elected Official Investment Fund — a neutral, practical tool to prevent public servants from profiting while in power. It doesn’t punish success. It just separates it from the job.

Here’s what the fund would do:

• Transfer assets at entry. Every elected official, from president to governor to senator, would move their investments into the fund upon taking office. This includes stocks, business stakes, and real estate partnerships. You keep your checking account and your house. But your portfolio goes in the fund.

• No tax penalty for rollover. Want to move your Tesla stock into an index fund when you join? Fine. No capital gains tax. But once you’re in office, you can’t buy or sell anything specific — no exceptions.

• Withdrawals get taxed. Need money from the fund? Sure. But it gets taxed like ordinary income. No sneaky liquidity plays. No gaming the tax code.

• Full public visibility. The public sees what’s in the fund. Voters deserve to know if their representatives are getting richer on the job.

• No family workarounds. If you can’t buy Nvidia the day before a hearing, neither can your spouse or your kids. Influence doesn’t stop at the dinner table.

• No private market deals. While in office, you can’t invest in private equity, hedge funds, or venture capital. These are the murkiest corners of finance, and the easiest to abuse.

• No gifts over a symbolic threshold. A framed jersey from a school visit? Fine. A luxury trip from a donor? No. Draw the line clearly, and don’t make it flexible.

This isn’t radical. Companies already do this. Major CEOs can’t trade stock without triggering disclosure. Some can’t give gifts at all. Business caught up to the ethics of influence. Politics hasn’t.

And the defenses are getting more absurd. Speaker Mike Johnson actually said Trump’s profiteering wasn’t a problem because it was “out in the open.” As if transparency turns bad behavior into good behavior. That’s like saying, “Sure, I robbed the store, but I smiled for the security camera.”

We’re grading corruption now based on how shameless it is. That’s not accountability. That’s surrender.

In the corporate world, you can be fired just for creating the appearance of impropriety. You don’t have to break a rule. You just have to make people think you might because perception matters. Leadership is supposed to mean restraint.

I care about this because I’ve run a business. I’ve seen how power warps decision-making. How proximity gets monetized. And how easy it is to justify. But more than that, I care because we’re running out of time.

We need to stop asking whether someone got rich from power. We need to build a system where the answer is that they can’t. The Elected Official Investment Fund won’t solve everything. But it’s a good place to start.

That’s not idealism. That’s baseline democracy.

All of that can be true, and it can still be difficult to define what “winning” looks like.

That is what makes Iran the hard case. Not because it is benign, and not because its ambitions are tolerable. But because the strategic options available to the United States carry enormous uncertainty, unclear end states, and the kind of downstream consequences that have historically trapped great powers in prolonged instability.

For years, my instinct was simple: negotiate from strength.

If Iran wanted sanctions relief, it should concede first. Don’t reward behavior; extract compliance.

Pressure works. Concessions come later.

But revisiting the nuclear agreement with some distance, I’ve had to admit something uncomfortable. For all its flaws, the deal appears to have pushed Iran further from the nuclear threshold than the reality that followed its collapse.

The agreement capped enrichment at 3.67%—appropriate for civilian nuclear energy—while weapons-grade uranium requires roughly 90% enrichment. More importantly, it extended Iran’s breakout time, the period required to produce enough weapons-grade material for a bomb if it chose to do so.

Under the agreement, that buffer was widely assessed at roughly a year. After the deal unraveled, public estimates shrank that window dramatically, down to days or weeks.

That does not mean Iran had a weapon. It means the margin for detection and response became thinner.

If the purpose of the strategy is to create distance from catastrophe, those numbers matter.

This isn’t about romanticizing diplomacy or ignoring Iran’s regional behavior. It’s about acknowledging that, in at least one measurable respect, the agreement constrained the most destabilizing risk more effectively than what replaced it.

Iran also clarifies something else: alliances are not ornamental; they are strategic multipliers.

The original nuclear framework was multilateral for a reason. Verification is stronger when shared. Sanctions bite harder when coordinated. Intelligence is more reliable when cross-checked. And enforcement is more credible when it reflects collective resolve rather than unilateral action.

If we expect our partners to help monitor, enforce, and contain Iranian behavior, we must recognize that alliances operate on reciprocity. They are not one-sided arrangements. European states view Ukraine as central to their own security. If we ask for solidarity on Iran, we cannot treat its priorities as peripheral. Relationships only endure when mutual interests are respected.

We must never forget that there is power in numbers.

If escalation is ever deemed necessary, acting alongside allies distributes risk and enhances legitimacy. Acting alone magnifies unpredictability. Especially in a region as volatile as the Middle East, unilateral ownership of escalation carries an enormous strategic burden.

This is also why Ukraine feels so different.

In Ukraine, there is a sovereign actor aligned with Western interests, fighting one of America’s most consequential adversaries. Supporting Ukraine allows the United States and its allies to weaken a revisionist power without deploying American troops into direct combat. The alignment is clear, the objective is defined, and there is someone we want to win.

In Iran, it is far less clear who that is.

When people speak casually about regime change, I struggle not because I lack sympathy for the Iranian people, but because I do not see the pathway.

Iran’s political system was constructed to survive leadership loss. Its coercive backbone—the Revolutionary Guard—exists precisely to ensure continuity through force, intelligence, and institutional durability. Civilian protest can erode legitimacy, but it cannot seize control of the state unless the coercive apparatus fractures or defects.

At present, there is no visible successor coalition with the power, cohesion, and governing capacity to replace what would fall.

Perhaps such a shift is possible. History can surprise us, but the outcome space is wide, and few of the plausible scenarios are clean.

At best, one might imagine a more pragmatic government emerging, less ideologically confrontational, more diplomatically open, and recalibrating not out of affection for the West but out of survival instinct. At worst, power consolidates under harder factions, or internal conflict erupts between competing security centers. And if fragmentation takes hold, the vacuum will not remain empty.

Something will rise from the ashes.

Power vacuums rarely produce immediate liberal democracy. More often, they produce consolidation, instability, or violence before any equilibrium is restored.

Sometimes nations must accept uncertainty when the threat is grave enough, but not every danger is an emergency. Iran can be a bad and dangerous regime capable of harming American interests without posing an immediate, direct threat to the U.S. homeland.

That distinction is difficult but important.

If the justification for escalation is imminent self-defense, the public case has not clearly demonstrated that threshold. If the justification is humanitarian, it is unclear whether recent actions bring the Iranian people closer to freedom, or whether they risk strengthening hardliners and reinforcing narratives of Western hostility.

That is the paradox.

External pressure can weaken a regime’s capabilities while simultaneously reinforcing its internal cohesion.

It reminds us that alliances matter precisely because no complex adversary is easier to manage alone. It clarifies why Ukraine is strategically straightforward, because the alignment and objectives are visible. It also exposes how difficult regime transformation becomes when the institutions of force are designed to regenerate under pressure.

I do not claim to have the perfect answer for Iran. I suspect few people do.

But strategy demands that we define our objectives honestly, measure our actions against realistic outcomes, and confront the uncertainty that follows escalation. In the Middle East, it is often the day after the headline moment—the vacuum, the succession, the unintended consequence—that defines the true cost.

And that is why Iran is the hard case.

Today, I keep a framed collection of similar “certainties” in my office. A graveyard of bold, confident predictions that were also, invariably, wrong. Some forecast permanent stagnation while others promised unstoppable dominance or inevitable collapse, yet time has a way of humbling even the most decorated experts.

Beneath those clippings sits a quote often attributed to Sir John Templeton: “The four most dangerous words in investing are, ‘This time it’s different.’” I look at that wall often, not because I believe risk is an illusion, but because it reminds me that certainty usually is, and that the future is notoriously difficult to predict.

Only months ago, markets were celebrating an AI supercycle as valuations expanded and legacy technology firms were rewarded for their strategic positioning in artificial intelligence.

Productivity gains were assumed, and growth projections were stretched further into the future than logic might usually allow. Now, however, the tone has flipped.

Each day, it feels as though a new artificial intelligence breakthrough makes another profession appear obsolete. And most recently, a published thought piece from Citrini Research, titled “The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis,” envisioned a scenario involving massive white-collar displacement, with unemployment climbing toward 20 or even 30%. Markets reacted sharply to this narrative; legacy tech names sold off, and entire industries began being discounted as if obsolescence were already a foregone conclusion.

While the swing has been abrupt, we must remember that markets move at the speed of narrative, while economies transform at the speed of infrastructure.

The magnitude of what is being implied deserves scrutiny. Roughly 70% of U.S. economic activity is tied to consumer spending. If unemployment truly approached 30%, the consequences would not be sector-specific; rather, that level of joblessness would rival the worst years of the Great Depression, when unemployment peaked near 25%.

Consumption would contract sharply, tax revenues would fall, credit markets would tighten, and political pressure would intensify almost immediately. At that point, we would no longer be debating artificial intelligence—we would be debating systemic stability.

Public and private companies share a basic objective: survival. Because survival implies profitability, and profitability requires a demand base with income, a firm that systematically destroys its own customers is not maximizing value; it is undermining its own future.

This is not about executive virtue, but rather the hard-coded structure of capitalism. Boards are not assembled to oversee their own decline, and executives are not compensated to hollow out the foundations of the businesses they serve.

Artificial intelligence did not arrive overnight; it has been modeled, piloted, and integrated into strategy for years. If AI adoption were truly on track to eliminate a quarter of the consumer income base, the signs would be broad and unmistakable—reflected in sustained earnings compression, severe credit stress, and collapsing capital expenditure. That is not what aggregate profitability data reflect yet. What we are seeing is a repricing, a rotation of capital that markets often confuse with ruin.

None of this denies disruption.

Slower hiring in certain white-collar fields is plausible, some displacement is likely, and wage compression in specific sectors could emerge. In a country already experiencing populist strain, those pressures would matter. But the debate suffers from an intellectual asymmetry where we hear constant discussion of destruction, but very little about creation.

History does not show technological revolutions that only subtract. Electrification displaced certain trades while enabling entirely new industries, just as computing reduced clerical labor only to create the software, semiconductor, and internet-based models that define the modern age. Economists describe this as creative destruction, where productivity growth lowers input costs and expands the economic frontier.

However, expansion often leaves a wake. While the frontier grows, the territory left behind can wither, and we have seen this before.

In the 20th century, we marveled at the efficiency of manufacturing automation but failed to plan for the human cost of the transition. The result was not just a shift in labor, but the hollowing out of entire communities, a displacement that lasted generations and fueled deep social fractures. If we acknowledge that AI is a systemic shift, we must also acknowledge that the “Transition Gap”—the period between the destruction of old roles and the formation of new ones- is where societies break.

Creative destruction is an economic necessity, but it should not be a social death sentence. To avoid the mistakes of the past, our focus must shift from protecting specific jobs to protecting the workers themselves through a structural evolution in portable benefits, continuous education, and localized resilience. The market may not be suicidal, but it can be indifferent. It is our responsibility to ensure the leap into an AI-driven future doesn’t leave half the population behind.

If we navigate this transition with intent, the same forces of disruption provide the tools for recovery. If intelligence becomes cheaper, the cost of problem-solving falls, the cost of experimentation falls, and the cost of launching new ventures falls. It is incomplete to assume the only outcome is subtraction.

After 2008, many believed municipal bonds would collapse, yet they did not. Others were certain China would quickly overtake the United States’ economic position, but that has not unfolded as predicted. History is filled with confident forecasts that underestimated human adaptation. This does not mean AI carries no risk, but systems built on profit and participation do not quietly choose extinction.

If unemployment ever approached the levels now being feared, the reaction would be immediate and structural. Capital would reallocate, policy would intervene, and new industries would form. The system would mutate long before it surrendered.

The greater danger may not be artificial intelligence itself, but allowing volatility to harden into fatalism. We should prepare, and we should think, using fear in moderation to sharpen our planning.

Disruption is inevitable.

4. Global Economic Impacts of the New Global Tariff

   Following the Supreme Court’s rejection of previous duties, the administration’s new 15% global tariff (under the Trade Act of 1974) goes into effect this week. Market analysts are watching for immediate retaliatory measures from trade partners or shifts in global supply chain pricing.

But seriousness cuts both ways.

The release of large portions of the Epstein files has reignited public outrage, understandably. When criminal behavior intersects with wealth and political access, transparency is not optional. In a country already strained by distrust, even the perception that elites shield elites is corrosive.

If wrongdoing was protected by influence, it must be exposed.

No one should be above the law.

And yet, the way this moment is unfolding risks undermining the very justice it seeks.

Investigative files are not verdicts. They are archives of inquiry — containing tips, interview summaries, third-hand allegations, duplicative records, and leads that went nowhere. Investigators document broadly because they must. Preservation is not validation.

In the court of public opinion, however, those distinctions disappear.

If a name appears frequently in a document release, it is treated as incriminating. If a public figure once socialized with Epstein, proximity becomes implication. Allegation hardens into assumed fact, frequency becomes depth, and association becomes guilt.

That is not how legal systems function.

Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein clearly moved in overlapping social circles in the 1990s and early 2000s. Photographs exist, public comments exist, and their association is documented. That proximity is politically damaging, but political damage and criminal liability are not the same.

A sustained social relationship, even an unwise one, is not proof of criminal participation or knowledge. The legal bar for prosecution is high by design. The burden of proof is rigorous because the cost of error is enormous.

It is also true that maintaining relationships after Epstein’s 2008 conviction raises legitimate moral questions. Continued association with a registered sex offender demands explanation, but moral discomfort is not criminal complicity. Questions require investigation, not assumption.

Seeking evidentiary discipline is not an act of protection for the powerful; it is an act of protection for the truth. If we convict by inference today, we leave the door open for the truly guilty to claim ‘witch hunt’ tomorrow. Real justice requires a scalpel, not a sledgehammer.

Part of what also makes this case combustible is human nature. Relationships at the highest levels of wealth and influence are often transactional. Access and opportunity can cloud judgment. People rationalize those they know. Some may have suspected more than they admit. Others may have underestimated the scale of abuse. Human beings are capable of moral blindness without participating in a criminal conspiracy.

Understanding that dynamic does not excuse abuse, but it explains how proximity can persist.

At the same time, the administration’s handling of this issue has not helped. In a low-trust environment, opacity breeds suspicion. Defensive rhetoric or inconsistent communication reinforces the instinct that something is being hidden. Even justified caution can appear as concealment.

But the solution to distrust is not a document avalanche.

Millions of pages cannot be meaningfully processed by the public. Excerpts circulate, and narratives harden within hours. With this volume of material, anyone can find a fragment that confirms what they already believe. That is not transparency, but rather interpretive chaos.

If we are serious about the truth, the path forward must be structured.

An independent special master or panel — a retired federal judge, experienced prosecutors and victim advocates — should review the entire archive. Completely, not selectively, and not politically.

That reviewer should categorize material by evidentiary weight, distinguish incidental contact from corroborated allegations, identify what was investigated and why charges were or were not pursued, protect victim identities, and issue a comprehensive public report.

Then testify under oath before Congress.

Sworn testimony introduces legal accountability. It allows bipartisan questioning, and most importantly, it forces clarity under penalty of perjury. In a low-trust era, accountability must be visible and structured.

The Department of Justice should, by definition, be the arbiter of this truth. But we have reached a point where the Department’s own proximity to political power has rendered it a ‘disqualified player.’ Whether through actual bias or the inescapable appearance of it, the DOJ can no longer provide the finality the country needs.

This moment is larger than any single political figure. It is a test of whether a republic can confront explosive information without abandoning evidentiary discipline. It is a test of whether we can demand accountability without surrendering due process.

If additional abuse occurred, survivors must feel this moment offers safety and justice — not spectacle. If powerful individuals shield wrongdoing, they must be held accountable. But justice achieved through disciplined investigation is durable. Justice declared through viral inference is not.

Proximity is not proof, allegation is not conviction, and transparency without structure is not accountability.

If we forget those distinctions now, we will not get to the bottom of this case. We will deepen the distrust that made it combustible in the first place.
