BIG BROTHER PUBLIC HEALTH – HARMING THE MANY TO SAVE THE FEW

From December 2026 all non-wholemeal flour sold in or imported into Britain must have folic acid added at a rate that will supply an average individual with 400 micrograms of this synthetic chemical per day.

Proponents of folic acid supplementation assert that neural tube defects in babies, manifest mainly as spina bifida, are caused by a deficiency of folate in the diet of pregnant women. By supplementing flour with the related chemical folic acid, which is converted in the body to folate, they contend that the rate of babies born with neural tube defects will decline.

Measurement of the relationship between folate levels in pregnant women and the frequency of neural tube defects in their babies show no threshold level of folate above which neural tube defects are absent. Supplementation is therefore unlikely to resolve the problem.

In an experimental trial of folic acid at doses achieved by supplementation of flour, women who took folic acid during pregnancy had fewer babies born with neural defects than those that did not. However, the women who took folic acid suffered a significant increase in foetal deaths. For every neural defect prevented, nine foetuses died. The deleterious side effects of folic acid on foetuses therefore massively outweigh any putative benefit.

For pregnant women the scientific evidence therefore provides no support for folic acid supplementation of flour. In the general population there are known adverse effects associated with ingestion of folic acid. The NHS advises against taking folic acid where there is an allergy to the chemical, where patients suffer from low B12 levels, have cancer, are on kidney dialysis, or have heart stents.

On the basis of these considerations there are neither sound scientific nor ethical grounds for adulterating all non-wholemeal flour and the products made from it with the synthetic chemical folic acid. The policy is likely to result in net harm to developing foetuses and expose the vast majority of the general public, who can derive no benefit from the chemical to both well documented and as yet unknown health hazards.

It was in August of 1793 when residents who lived on the wharves of the Philadelphia docks started to turn a repulsive jaundiced colour, their eyes became red and they vomited a black bile from their bleeding stomachs. This had been preceded by the initial stages of chills and severe muscular pain from which the disease progressed to the perilous, often fatal, acute stages of Yellow Fever.

The disease had swept through the West Indies that year and a slave revolt in Santo Domingo had brought many refugees carrying it into mainland United States through the port of Philadelphia. Aided by a wet spring and a hot, dry summer and abetted by appalling sanitary conditions with gutters clogged by discarded detritus and filthy individual habits such as residents drinking from the contaminated water of outhouses.

By the end of the month, twenty people a day were dying. Coffin makers received a boom in business and vocally hawked their wares on the street. At the time, inhabitants did not know that mosquitoes spread the infection but they did know that it could be contracted from contact with infected persons so a form of improvised social distancing was introduced: no hand shaking and sticking to the middle of the street instead of the pavement when ambulating.

Reminiscent of Enlightenment Edinburgh, and recent Covid Times, and equally as ineffective as a preventative measure, people attempted to create a sanitary bubble around themselves by holding vinegar-dipped handkerchiefs over their nose or chewed garlic to placate their nostrils, and sense of well-being, with the vapours released from their masticating.

None of it worked, nothing abated the pestilence that enveloped the city. Yet among this scene of panic, fear, disease and death, the sprightly, ‘pretty’ figure of the city’s leading physician Dr. Benjamin Rush could be witnessed, striding confidently from the houses of the rich to those of the poor, discriminating against none, as he single-handedly defied the fever to take him and those charges under his care.

His approach was not one out of step with the prevailing wisdom of the day, although to us now it sounds wilfully barbaric, almost murderous, and so replete with contradiction that the poor unwitting doctor might be fitted with the term ‘mass murderer’ rather than the hero of Philadelphia. To begin, he bled and purged the victim; this was followed by an emptying of the bowels four or five times utilising a dispensary of potions and enemas, and then finally, for good measure, he drained ten to twelve ounces of blood to lower the pulse. In addition, he applied an emetic for good measure. To ensure success, this regimen was undertaken two or three times every day!

It is a wonder anyone recovered. Under the circumspect view of our modern eyes, the incapacitation of the body’s natural defences and debilitation of its capacity to recover and regenerate seems like insanity from a medical man, a man of purported science. How could a patient convalesce while their immune system was thinned and weakened while nourishment was withheld? Fortunately, there were dissenters.

When Alexander Hamilton, the uniquely brilliant Treasury Secretary of Washington’s first government, succumbed to the plague, he was tended to not by Dr Rush, the most renowned physician, but by his old friend from his impoverished childhood who had now become a successful physician Edward Stevens. His formative companion had practised in the West Indies and had a great deal of experience with tropical diseases. He did not subscribe to the common theories of purgation, concluding that these measures weakened the patient rather than aiding the restitution of health.

Instead of an approach closer to Medieval application of leeches, Stevens applied remedies that were ‘cordial, stimulating, and tonic’. To us in the present a few may seem a little extreme, cold baths and alcoholic drinks, albeit the use of natural flowers and plants may be welcomed, nonetheless, Stevens’ methods maintained the integrity of the body and augmented the exposure to minerals and compounds which the patient had been lacking.

The proof is in the pudding. In contrast to the weeks spent by the infected hovering near death, barely surviving the cure never mind the fever, Alexander Hamilton and his wife recovered in five days. Buoyed by his speedy revival, Hamilton set himself to proselytise Steven’s protocols with vigour. To his credit, swallowing the implicit rebuke and proscribing the awful thought that he was doing more harm than good, Dr Rush gave the new system a try for a few days; however, it failed to produce results as successful as his colleague. Infuriating Rush enough to resort to the public to defend his method and deprecate his rival.

Unfortunately, matters soon descended into the swamp of partisan politics since Rush was a supporter of Thomas Jefferson, a man who envied, feared and loathed Hamilton, and it was declared that Hamilton’s ‘Federalist’ medicine was as revolting and as fatal to the needs of the patient as his funding system was to the newly founded United States and its government. Rush ‘Republican’ methods were the only remedy to the situation. Two competing medical points of view, legitimate in that, as far as can be discerned, they were both sincerely held, were befouled by accusations of misanthropy and conspiracy on both sides, and a public, genuine application of the scientific method demonstrating a successful approach, beneficial to all, was made impossible. Sadly, the public lined up on either side guided by their party affiliations and not their reason.

Interesting to note in passing that when Hamilton was to be reunited with his children who had been moved to his father-in-law’s Albany mansion, his arrival was viewed with agitation by the local mayor. He asked Philip Schuyler, the father of Hamilton’s wife, that a guard be posted outside the family home to prevent Hamilton from mingling with the citizenry. Schuyler, under pressure, compromised and assured the official that his family would not leave the estate, and asked sarcastically if the guard could drop off food in the garden so the possibly contaminated could eat. It would take nearly 230 years for a world to exist where people voluntarily practised such absurdities.

Do we ever learn? Wasn’t the controversy over Ivermectin an issue that could have been quickly resolved by honest, public investigation, indeed, putting to one side the actions of bad actors, Epstein affiliates, and a clear plan to do mischief to billions, could not the entirety of Covid been stopped before the nonsense started if doctors and people of science simply stood up, openly questioned and refused to accept false, disingenuous or unprovable statements from the hierarchs?

The issue of vaccines is perhaps more apposite. In two hundred years time, I wonder what the reaction will be of future men and women when told that people injected themselves with the virus they wanted to avoid, sometimes modifying their DNA to continually produce them for years into the future, accompanied by adjuvants that included some of the planet’s most toxic chemicals. It sounds absurd, irrational, barbaric, murderous in the first instance, but then when they take into account this is correlated by explosions in the cases of autism and cancers, then what will they conclude about us?

And isn’t refusing to entertain a debate on theses points anything other than base, unthinking partisan politics, which is always a cover for hidden interests?

The global economy is bankrupt. From the 2008 financial crisis until today, the world has been living in an asymmetric system: ‘asymmetric’ in the sense that what was formerly a complete framework of financial accounting has partially dismantled a few supporting struts, removed to allow what remains to form some sort of stable existence. A fact that is counter-intuitive to anyone who has a view which conceptualises systems as being cohesive working wholes with mutual interdependency between parts, which, if not the actual case, then they are simply broken.

At a very early stage during the collapse of the banking system eighteen years ago, the requirement to mark assets to market was removed. This means that if a house had been purchased with a loan of a £1 000 000 and was now worth £800 000, then there was a loss of £200 000. Due to accounting rules, the bank which had lent the money originally. that previously have a one million pound asset, would now have an asset on their books showing a £200 000 reduction. Losing money unsettles banks, and markets, encouraging fear of further loss, whether rational or irrational, and therefore rules have been put in place to ensure that these losses are covered. Banks make what is called a ‘margin call’ to their debtors.

The debtor, in this situation, either has to pay back the principal sum or pay the deficit, ‘the margin’, between the loan and the asset to assure the jittery lender they will get the return of money previously leant in order to provide confidence in the borrower’s solvency. These protocols only work if debts are recorded realistically, and they are in place for very good reasons.

Given the interlinking dependency of financial transactions, a loss of faith in credit’s allocation, are like explosions of dynamite connected on a series circuit: the charge blows up one bundle of sticks, then another, and then another, all along the wire, as demands are made for payments that necessitate the liquidating of further assets which drive down these other prices and since these other assets were likely purchased with loans, precipitate require further demands on cash.

A fire sale flares across markets where asset prices fall quickly, the original nominal cash values are destroyed, gone for years, possibly forever, loanees thus remain heavily indebted; despite selling everything they are unable to clear their losses, and creditors are wiped out with loans which are unable to be repaid. Under the modern credit system, it is not only hypothetically possible that the system goes to zero, it is inevitable that it will do so and then go beyond that figure to a negative number, because the debt, augmented by interest payments, is far greater than the cash in the system. Operating under reckless, speculative behaviour, the negative numbers of the accounting book blast past zero with no end point in sight.

It is the refutation of Say’s Law. A theory that claims that all deficits and all surpluses cancel each other out. Unfortunately, Jean-Baptiste Say ignored something that every credit card user is all too familiar with – interest. Debt accrues due to interest on that debt. Unhappily, money does not likewise increase simply by its existing and the cases where it appears to do so is due to the transfer of payments from those who have borrowed it into existence, by whatever circuitous means.

The economy is a like a frenetic swirling sieve where the draining out (debt) has to be equalled or exceeded by the pouring in of liquid (credit) otherwise we face a collapse in demand – people having the cash to buy actual goods and services. In many respects, monetary systems live on a precipice, as Covid demonstrated, a sudden loss of confidence, which if continued without recovery over a relatively short time period can create a debt spiral that it is impossible to arrest endogenously i.e nothing within the system can stop the tailspin.

This is where central banks aided by government can step in, and did so in 2008, supplying ‘exogenous’ growth. Massive money printing begun then, and continuous to the present day, alongside the already mentioned relaxation of accounting rules, halted the collapse and has subsequently kept the economy functional on the surface at least. However, the real economy is bust. Injections of money, increased government spending and fraud, all combined, have allowed it to survive this far; akin to a patient who requires regular blood transfusions, steroids and a machine to continue breathing, and although the patient is kept technically in a state of existence, if required to be reliant on their own efforts, they will die. Growth supplied from within the system – borrowing money and spending to either consume or the expectation of returns – is too little to maintain the current size of the economy.

In normal circumstances, confidence would restore the economy. However, it illustrates the extent to which rampant, unregulated and unscrupulous borrowing piled-up unpayable debts that despite unprecedented institutional intervention, confidence has not returned sufficiently to engender growth which is not led and underwritten by government spending.

Yet the situation is worse than even this poor sketch of mercantile matters suggests: the amount of money used to bail out banks and other lenders should have caused massive inflationary pressure, especially so as the same actions have been performed near constantly over the intermittent years. There has been a massive, skewed rise in some assets, in particular the stock market, which now has share prices far in excess of even hopefully optimistic profits based on near impossible real-world scenarios. However, the volume of liquidity sprayed over these economic fires should have meant an unbridled torrent of inflation that raised all prices. This did not happen, despite permission to banks to sterilise bad debts and move them off their books. It is a testament to the fraud and greed of the late nineties and early two thousands that the debts that remain today still act as a too-heavy ballast dragging down the economic ship below the waterline.

Regardless of the richest’s gains in cash and asset price, the rest of the economy still labours in near-recession where inflation combines with stagnant wage growth and a higher tax burden to eat away at people’s disposable money. As mentioned, the government funds more and more of the economy, bailing out those on welfare, providing workers with supplemental income and professionals with an array of non-jobs in the arts, think tanks, charities and the civil service.

What this resembles ultimately is a neo-feudal state reminiscent of the dreams of fascism. All economic activity is now dependent on the state, whether handouts are to corporations or the individual, since the economy cannot maintain itself under its own steam. As this trend has been allowed to continue, markets have become captured by those monopolies favoured by the state and, slowly and unnoticed, all aspects of the economy are brought under control at the macro level.

Digital currencies potentially create an opportunity for control at the micro level too, thus presenting the prospect of a vast administrative state dominating all areas of economic activity. Money will be allocated from a central authority aligned with protocols implementing policies agreed far, far away from the people they effect.

Whether people agree with this or not, this is a carefully thought-out response to an economy that almost twenty years after it blew-up is still dysfunctional. There are four salient points I would like to mention as food for thought, however: the first – it is the oldest trick in the book to encourage speculative excesses by loosening lending practices, creating a boom, then in the subsequent crash buy up real assets, and thereby gaining the commanding heights of the economy; the second – if we consider what did not happen, the bailing out of debtors instead of creditors (who were also debtors), then there is a class element to the re-shaping of the economy; and, thirdly, by preventing collapse, the state has created a role enriching further the already rich, empowering its officers to a heady state of arrogance and making everyone else dependent.

The fourth is a dispiriting one: there is no loan without a loanee, and the wealthy know best of all, there is no crazed speculative asset bubbles without a mass of small-time speculators hoping to get rich quick and fund a lifestyle far beyond their current means. As Thomas Jefferson noted, once the tailor enriches himself in a day, even if it is lost the next, then he forever turns dissatisfied from the honest wage provided by his needle never to return. People’s greed about inflated house prices, funding living through loans and credit cards, and borrowing to place ‘one way bets’ on land and properties, led the world into the hands of neo-feudalists who could rightly point at the madness of crowds in throwing away financial security in a game they only dimly understand.

All of these are crucial elements in building a fascist society, that people do remember was anti-democratic, but forget that it was also anti-capitalist, anti-free markets and opposed to any individual initiative outside of the state. If we wish to escape the destination of this trend, then a change of values is required.

Former president, Richard Nixon, believed that it was one of his major political goals to prevent a race war. In what is one of history’s tantalising ipso facto postulations, many political historians and people within the Nixon administration from that period consider avoiding civil war, one fuelled by race and the recoiling fury caused by the practical dismantling of Segregation, one of the great achievements of his time in office. Ultimately, however, Nixon considered a race war inevitable and all he did was postpone the date on which it would arrive.

I wonder if Nixon’s calculation based itself on the conclusion that different races found it difficult to overcome their own prejudice, tribalism and economic favouritism and deal with one another in a manner that did not inflame tensions; or whether the hand of history lay too heavily on the subordinated race, unable to apply a psychic balm to themselves for the wounds of oppression or exorcise their self possessed seething spirits of resentment; or whether, despite the kind words and virtuous performance, the previously privileged could ever truly cede their dubiously accrued social benefits and unjustly accumulated capital? Or did he know that powerful misanthropes would continually use race as an instrument to prise apart unity and leverage division, hatred and violence?

It is a curiously telling sign that Richard Nixon in private life, post his presidency, hired and paid for his own private security, unlike the conventional arrangement pertaining to protecting former presidents where agents were supplied by the Secret Service, who, unknown at the time to most people, existed as a branch of the Treasury Office, until 2003, and were not their own independent agency, nor were they housed as a distinct unit within the command structure of one of the armed forces. A further example, if one is needed by now, that this is a Banker’s World and that its controlling tentacles still extends to and wraps around its servants, even when long past the zenith of their political usefulness.

Nixon knew that there were cabals and factions who wanted a race war. He cynically and brilliantly used such groups to gain election before turning his back on them and becoming the president who made practical application of the civil rights legislation passed by Lyndon Johnson through its realisable enforcement but who also softened the controversial policy of ‘busing’, making it more acceptable, and, ultimately, more successful. In doing so, he doused right-wing resentments, disarmed the weaponised rhetoric of the left-wing radicals, and, at the same time, began a less incendiary approach, domestically, to Vietnam.

Not a perfect man by any stretch, and humane people will despise and lament how his policy of escalation in Vietnam, through bombing and toxic poisoning of the environment, was conducted by the former president. Yet all this happens within a context: Nixon knew and feared that his potential failure in Vietnam would mean a Right, not a Left, takeover in America, likely after a civil war, and this would lead to a rapid intensification in Vietnam, the ruination of relations with Russia and China, recombining the communist bloc and setting the stage for a world conflagration, and the reversal of the social progress of the Kennedy and Johnson eras in the United States, subsumed under a tyranny founded on race and money. There was a lot at stake when he came to office and Richard Nixon knew it.

In many ways, Nixon was the last consequential president of the United States until now. Subsequent presidents inherited, more or less, the settled political world that Nixon had created for them. The Republican coalition of Yankee capitalists and white professional liberals with Southern conservatives and church goers have restrained the Far Right, while the Left has based its support on what remains of the demographic – liberal intellectuals, northern, industrial working class and ethnic minorities – in which there is not a huge amount of desire for anything that could be called ‘socialism’. It all balances around a centre that Nixon foresaw and created with his political strategy. From this overlapping mosaic, all others achieving the Oval Office have only trimmed some demographics and patched others with another here and there.

But, obviously, underlying all these coalitions are fundamental issues that Nixon thought could not be resolved, concerns to which, at best, only temporary barriers could be erected, lasting for however long, but ultimately swept away in the instinctual, genetic hurricane of the irrational human passions that swirl around race. Nixon’s opening of relations with China, an act of optimism tempered with economic pragmatism, although a world historical triumph, did not appear to convince him that peace was anything but temporary.

Nixon’s public reputation has suffered from his communist-baiting, his aggression as a vice-president and his bombing campaigns in Vietnam. However, the little discussed aspect of his career, is that he continually used corporate business as a tool, encouraging it to expand into ‘hostile’ countries and thereby link economic interests of enemies, giving each a stake in the success of the other. Influential with Pepsi, he helped the company build interests in Cuba and the Soviet Union; he cultivated Pan America’s Juan Trippe as they expanded across the Caribbean and South America, and he supported business’ entry into an excluded and closed communist China. All for a practical peace.

Now, this legacy looks on the verge of being over-turned. Bad actors have inflamed the racial issue by their acceleration of immigration, pushing it too far, too fast, and making it the touchstone issue of all political dialogue. Whether mass immigration is a good thing or a bad thing is not a debate that is possible to have today. The answer is already decided by which political camp you are in and must be furiously adhered to no matter what. Any dissent on this issue is now seen as a fundamental indicator of your righteousness within the Cause, and loyalty to it, and even any nuance on the matter, can lead to banishment from the tribe and an unwanted incarnation as an ‘enemy’.

Indeed, for what seems like millions, it has gone beyond a Cause and reaches down to the very core of identity. This means argument is impossible. For how can anyone argue that ‘You’ yourself are wrong or how can anyone accept that their entire being is mistaken? Consequently, insults replace arguments and no common ground is discoverable; in its place just further slander, assumed bad faith, resentment, manipulation, deceit, betrayal, and, finally, violence as the only resolution.

Monday’s alleged attempted murder by beheading in Belfast, including the gouging of one eye and damage to another, is the most graphic – so horrific that immediately my suspicions are aroused, but that’s a later discussion - of a series of incidents that are highlighting the fault lines in society, and the common factor of race as their demarcation. It is disturbing that people, who claim, ostensibly, to be helping race relations, like the police and the media, are acting in a way that is strengthening every anti-immigrant and racist narrative out there. As a conspiracy theorist, I wonder what element is deliberate in all of this, and then I recall Covid, and remember that people in positions of authority and influence can be very stupid. Undoubtedly, there is intention somewhere, however, many of the actions, and much of the commentary, especially on the Left, is making matters worse.

To deal with policy first: isn’t it incredible that a country which voted in their millions to leave a political organisation because it did not like millions of white, slavic immigrants from the same continent reducing wages, using services or fragmenting the culture, should suddenly import millions of people from different continents, causing similar results but made more conspicuous, and aggravated in the eyes of the native, by skin colour, culture and social demands? Politically, it seems like suicide. A calculating, acute politician like Richard Nixon would never have countenanced it. A backlash is built into a policy like this. And, I’m confident that there is little preparation to mitigate one. Whether this has been due to the naïve, incompetence of our current cohort of political leaders or resulting from deliberate planning, I don’t know, but I veer to the latter.

As for the commentariat: I can think of few more redundant purposes than the media’s intention to lecture millions of people about how awfully bad human beings they are, by implication, while at the same time they urge that ‘civilised’, better elements fill the hollow shells of being a ‘tolerant, accepting, diverse’ community, not withstanding their ongoing dismissive attitude towards the conchiolin of alienation, economic marginalisation, social implosion and despair that resides within the cavity. Vast swathes of today’s population residing in the British Isles, ignored and silenced by the public apparatus of narrative, disregard the ‘liberal’ media. In return, the media have entered the caricature phase of message delivery. The same old pieties, repeated ad nauseam, delivered in a shriller and shriller tone making the opposite position of their own the more relevant, the more serious and the more real. When you’re not being taken seriously, you stop being listened to, and then losing is simply a matter of time.

A subtle, brilliant politician like Richard Nixon was always prepared to give a point of view its due weight, irrespective of its source; it was not relevant factor if he agreed with it or found it repellent. Its existence was a political fact and had to be treated accordingly, not brushed aside, patronised or piously annihilated. Yes, some people are pure blood fascists, some are racists, some people are anti-immigration and some people are worried about paying bills. Nixon would take those views as credible and demanding of attention in a language that actually spoke to those holding those opinions. From there, he would start to work apart such a coalition, if it served the greater purpose of peace, even if he believed it only bought time. Peace was always preferable to chaotic, intestate violence. In peace, problems can be solved. In civil war, there’s only death, and the same problems existing with added bitterness for decades afterwards.

What he would not do is create a bloc of his opponents, meld them into adopting one decisive opinion to become their candle, and, by further condescending criticism, pour oil onto this single spark, permitting it to ignite all the other political issues and make the flames of civil strife inevitable.

Sadly, there is no one of Nixon’s abilities on the horizon in the UK. Trump might turn out to be a consequential president in the United States, and, although outwardly bombastic, has shown a deftness in some areas not in line with the image a critical media likes to portray of him. However, our politicians are incredibly one dimensional and their artlessness and limited imaginations are now confronting dynamics that, even if there is a military unit somewhere using AI to calculate outcomes and how to arrest the more savage ones, they lack the ability to articulate the necessary ideas, combining with a connective empathy, that would provide any side with appealing alternatives to barbarism.

A race war is not inevitable, probably. Yet that hardly matters if bad actors and poor actors cannot stop it. We will careen into it due mass resentment, media’s high-handed superiority complex, radicals’ ill-will and the intellectual and emotional restrictions of the political class.

Prostitution, trafficking, money laundering, genetic experimentation, eugenics, blackmail, extortion, bribery, Zionism, market manipulation, murder, genocide of the poor, global disruption, child-killing, ritual sacrifice and cannibalism: with Jeffrey Epstein, we know it starts with trafficking women, but where does it end?

From providing a narcissistic prince with a supply of sexual consorts, often underage and damaged girls, to trying to breed duplicates of himself with a team of scientists at his Arizona ranch, to conspiring with Bill Gates to have the World Health Organisation declare a pandemic with the clandestine purpose of ‘getting rid of poor people’, to human sacrifices in his Baal-worshipping temple situated on his island, as much a location for the depravities of the powerful as Capri during the reign of Tiberius, the average person is left confused wondering what is true and what is not?

Ironically, a little like the Kennedy Assassination, that attempt to reveal the truth rebounds on researchers. The amount of evidence, much of it lurid, some of it outlandish and hardly believable, leads to people switching off. It’s too intricate, too complicated for some; for others, the idea that any person or group could organise something like this is sheer fantasy. Government can barely deliver a train service, never mind organising a political assassination or, as in Jeffrey Epstein’s case, a global sex trafficking network that enticed, ensnared and likely enslaved numerous public figures. It extends beyond the scope of people’s imagination, like Covid being a hoax does.

With each subsequent reveal of the Epstein files, usually after tireless research from only a handful of committed individuals, we are startled to discover that Epstein funded Bitcoin; he was instrumental in the 2008 financial crash; he had global health under his sway; he was at the centre of the cabal conspiring to have the world shut down in 2020, despite being murdered in 2019, and he was managing the future in a range of areas, by funding and compromising leading scientists. He knew everyone and their secrets.

But who is Jeffrey Epstein? There are four things we can be confident about: he was some sort of intelligence agent, he was clever, he must have been charming, and he was depraved. Everything else is an attempt to make coherent a series of fragmentary, dislocated and innocuous pieces of information. He’s poor but he immediately has great contacts. He’s unqualified but he’s leading intellectuals around by the nose. He’s conspicuous, high-profile and attention-seeking, yet he’s a valuable asset seducing elites openly as part of a clandestine operation. And this is only the mainstream information – the genetic experiments, the occult connections and the grand conspiracies make the situation even more confusing. How did all this happen to the son of a gardener and a stay at home mum?

More intriguingly, and possibly harder to answer, is the question what is ‘Jeffrey Epstein’? ‘An intelligence agent’ would be the elective shout from most commentators and internet sleuths. ‘Yes, but who for?’ To which query an answer that supplying names of a series of alphabet agencies and departments from a range of countries with whom most people are very familiar. Mossad being the most vocally pronounced of them all.

However, this is unsatisfying. If, to take the weight of the evidence at face value, then Jeffrey Epstein is a Mossad agent working to give Israel useful intelligence and leverage on a swathe of the ruling class in western countries, and we should not ignore evidence, and it is likely that it is true to some extent. Israel is powerful and can open a lot of doors for a capable agent like Epstein.

Yet, when we think about the depth and range of access Epstein enjoyed, into all the worlds of politics, science, business and finance, and how he conveniently connects them all together, we may find ourselves slightly puzzled: rarely does life present itself so neatly, coherently and open to such an understandable narrative.

Everything bad about modern life and potentially disastrous for the future connects to Jeffrey Epstein. Vaccines, mRNA vaccines and scientific manipulation for political goals? Epstein’s there with Bill Gates and the pharmaceutical companies. Stock-market manipulation, crashing markets, creating financial products to foist on to unsuspecting investors? Epstein’s there again. The banks and their pump and dump schemes, their manipulation of prices and suppression of commodities? Yup, he’s here. Bitcoin, digital assets and a monetary control grid? Epstein’s involved. AI, the surveillance of society and the possible replacement of humans with robots? Guess who was funding projects? And genetics, the attempt to create superhumans and breed out the dysfunctional? Jeffrey Epstein is funding projects here too.

An observer would obviously conclude that Jeffrey Epstein was a bad guy with a lot of money, probably supplied by misanthrope billionaires and governments to provide cover between these activities and themselves. It’s a credible assumption. But still, I can’t quite escape the nagging feeling that it’s all too good, too obvious.

Even after he’d been ‘burned’ in 2006 when he was first arrested, Epstein was still able to move with ease among gatherings of the powerful. Rich people who are notoriously cautious, who have the best intelligence, pay advisers to protect them from individuals like Epstein and who must have known that any further association could frustrate their future ambitions. It doesn’t make sense. Epstein was highly susceptible to imploding at any moment, and yet, conveniently, billionaires took the time to email him placing on the record damning indictments of themselves – and sending them to a gmail email address! Don’t they have some sort of ultra-exclusive, clandestine internet pipeline for these type of communications?

To draw these threads together, let us try a thought the opposite of the celebrated ‘cui bono?’ which is to ask, ‘who does not benefit from the Epstein files?’. Clearly, Israel suffers from their revelations. A country that is using kompromat to maintain a hold over the policies of the United States primarily, but other nations too, is now a significant belief across the global population. Royal families are taking a battering as many off-shots of the royal line have been found to be involved in exploitation facilitated by Epstein, which is leading to greater scrutiny of them, none of it flattering.

The billionaire-celebrity-politician matrix is completely discredited with so many having flown to Epstein island, so too the banks which funded Epstein and the corporations that took his money. In fact, the entire kleptocracy of the global elite is implicated as no more than oily, sex predators or some level of pimp in the sex exploitation hierarchy. So, to answer the question, the entire upper strata of society that governs us at a global level.

Presently, the view of who benefits by Epstein and the record of his crimes is obscured. Nationalists? Anti-globalists? Libertarians? Utopians? Technologists? Futurists? Is this an attempt to restore a more human world by revealing the corruption of the old one, or a step towards a more dystopian society ushered in on our loss of faith in rulers, making them more easily replaced with an AI that watches over us with incontrovertible, unarguable and eternal protocols.

Epstein has penetrated the culture and is now one of the most famous men on the planet. As further releases appear to be inevitable, then our understanding of current day corruption will deepen, nonetheless, the meaning of it all is something that should concern us. If we draw the wrong conclusions, then we could find that the mass understanding of the name ‘Epstein’ corrals us into an unwanted future in the same way ‘Manson’ discredited hallucinogens as therapies, ‘Stalin’ is used to undermine working class movements, and the moniker ‘Hitler’ legitimises attacking the leader of any country our plutocrats disagree with.

The great German philosopher Immanuel Kant speaks about a ‘contradiction of ideas’ in his moral philosophy. This is when we follow a maxim, but when it is taken to its logical conclusion it undermines the purpose it was supposed to fulfil.

Kant believed that for a moral maxim to be workable, then it had to be applicable at all times and all places. He called this the Categorical Imperative. A morality that could not be followed by all people in all instances throughout time and space was one that introduced relativism to all moral concepts, a philosophical development that the rigorous and tidy Kant devoted the latter part of his life trying to refute.

An individual would take a moral maxim and put it through the Categorical Imperative, a thought experiment, which would then be able to conclude whether this moral rule was one that was ‘rational’. For instance, ‘Thou shalt not kill’ is a possible maxim which could be applied to all times and places. There is no particular contradiction in it, so it would be a moral rule to follow.

However, if there was a maxim such as ‘Do whatever it takes’ and we take such a one, applying it to an exam, then it is easy to imagine ambitious students cheating in the exam to pass. Furthermore, it is not at all impossible to conceive a majority or even nearly all students attempting some sort of clandestine manoeuvre to achieve their desired grade, or, perhaps the educator assisting – one whose pay, position and status may be dependent on passes. (In Scotland, not a great deal of imagination is required as the classroom based National qualifications are institutionally corrupt and there is pressure for all children to attain them.)

The problem, of course, is that if a sizable minority, majority or everybody cheats in an exam, then the object attained becomes less valuable. The reason for the examination is undone by the fact that it cannot be relied upon to demonstrate its claim. Kant would call this a Contradiction of Ideas since following the maxim would undermine the intent of the protagonist.

Another objection to a maxim might be a Contradiction of Actions. This is when the maxim applied results in actions that are seriously disadvantageous to the person carrying it out. A man who says, ‘Live for myself’, and adopts this as law for his own affairs can live a happy and possibly not an immoral life. Yet, when the day comes upon that, old and frail, he is committed to the nursing home by children of similar bent, there is very little onus on them or the staff in his new environment to do anything out the way of their own interests for him. In the home, there’d be no care, certainly none that was beyond the remit of the job, and so this cold, functional world would be the result of his previous motto. Would he now like the consequences of his maxim?

Covid taught us something: the maxims we are following, and, at a guess, it would seem to be ones like ‘Keep your head down’, ‘Please yourself’ and ‘Follow your Self-Interest’, across society and in our institutions are making an enemy of our future.

Take as an illustration the NHS, which was a complete disgrace during Covid, failing to adhere to the basic tenets of medical ethics or perform professional due diligence on the vaccines, in not just one individual or body but across all its hundreds of thousands of staff and multitude of health boards and subsidiary bodies, it adopted the maxims of ‘obedience without thought is good’ and ‘protecting patients is detrimental’.

Obviously, there is a Contradiction of Ideas here and we do not have to speculate on subservient behaviour producing morally catastrophic outcomes when the contemporary world offers multiple examples occurring at present. The Contradiction of Action too is clear: one day most NHS workers will need medical attention, will they wish that others see their rights as easily disposable as they did?

Using Kant’s concepts accurately, it should have been relatively easy to avoid the moral disasters of recent years, and, to some extent, although the ideas are framed in seemingly technical language, most people can understand the ideas when related in everyday language. In fact, they regularly apply them, usually. It does not require hundreds of pages of Kant to explain that ethics should be universal and that narrow self-interest rebounds on the unfeeling individual at some point.

As people are aware, then we have to ask what is missing in their personal worldview and moral make-up? They are not ignorant of the language of ethics since even the Covid propaganda was couched in moral terms and became a ‘moral’ argument about ‘doing the right thing for others’. And most people have prior experience of acting morally. What other aspect of morality, critical to its understanding and acting upon its precepts, are we missing?

There is a principle of Kant’s moral philosophy that is the foundation stone of the entire structure. Lacking this, the complexity and rationality of Kant’s system crumbles because it lacks the force to maintain it or execute its requirements. Ironically, it resides in the world of Feeling, an area where Kant seldom ventures due to the ‘pure’ rationality of his project.

Without an emotional bedrock to build upon that aspires to a set of ideals and infuses them with actions, a person’s moral philosophy, no matter how many times articulated, is a sham; because it then rests upon either Interest or Fear. And in my experience, it is often Interest that rules until unseated by its superior in feeling – Fear.

Good Will is fundamental to Kant’s moral philosophy. Unless an individual is disposed to do good, wants to do good, is passionate about doing good, then all of the intricate reasonings and wide-reaching consequences of Kant’s ideas are reduced to little more than formulaic and linguistic quibbles that would put a barrack’s room lawyer to shame. (Or just a lawyer, who as a collective were equally shameful during Covid: laws were overthrown without a peep, rights ignored, crimes committed; doubtless the legal fraternity operated under the same such dismal maxims as the medical profession.)

An alien visitor to this planet, having arrived five minutes ago, might be impressed by how attentive we are to establishing and maintaining moral norms. ‘Rights’ this, ‘Rights’ that, what is the right thing to be doing, what is the wrong thing, our public discourse is full to overflowing of this language, in fact, it never shuts up about it: not every one can be an expert or know what they’re talking about, but they can opine on morality, endlessly.

Nonetheless, the same alien visitor, after a few minutes, would start to discern that actions seem to fall a long way short of words. That the moralistic formulations that guides us are simply empty, easily dropped or manipulated to mean something else other than originally intended; that behind al the noise there is an Ill Will acting under many of these ‘moral’ subterfuges, promoting in the lower steps of the social pyramid their own selfish aims, and at the capstone, mass destruction across the planet, whilst planning more of it. We are in the grip of Ill Willed people.

However, part of the undiagnosed problem is that the Many in whom it is assumed Good Will exists should be more accurately described as Weak Willed, helping no one for good and obstructing no one who intends bad. The feeble desires that wish for better outcomes but excite no steps towards them make these individuals become unwitting co-conspirators with the genuinely malevolent, putting us into a situation where many commentators are predicting economic collapse and a few are sounding the warning that there is a month of oil left for Europe and then its famine.

Under such circumstances, what will be our moral philosophy then?
