Ukraine may be approaching such a line now.

For more than two years, the war has been sustained by a simple Western formula: keep the weapons flowing, keep the rhetoric elevated, and keep Ukraine in the field for as long as possible. Publicly, this has been framed as a defense of sovereignty, democracy and the international order. In practice, it has become something darker and more cynical: a proxy strategy with no credible path to victory, no serious peace process, and no visible limit to the human material it is willing to consume.

That reality has already been visible for some time in Ukraine’s forced mobilization campaign. Videos have circulated for months showing military recruiters and police dragging men from sidewalks, cafes, buses and cars. Families plead. Wives and mothers intervene physically. Men are beaten, shoved into vans, and sent into a war that large parts of the political class still describe in the language of honor and duty.

These are not isolated abuses. They are symptoms of exhaustion.

A state does not resort to this kind of coercion when it is confident. It does so when voluntary enlistment has dried up, when losses have become impossible to replace, and when the gap between official rhetoric and lived reality has grown too wide to hide. Forced mobilization is not a sign of national resolve. It is a sign that the social foundation of the war is cracking.

Now there are growing signs that the next step may be coming into view: the mobilization of women.

For months, Western commentary has dressed up this prospect in the approved language of modern liberal virtue. Women can do anything men can do. War service is equality. The battlefield is empowerment. If Ukraine needs more bodies, then asking whether women should be included is presented not as a tragedy, but as a progressive inevitability.

This is moral evasion masquerading as principle.

The issue is not whether women are capable of certain kinds of military service. Of course they are. Women already serve in armed forces around the world. The issue is what it means for a country to reach the point where it must seriously consider sending large numbers of its daughters into an attritional industrial war because so many of its sons are dead, maimed, missing, or in hiding.

That is not emancipation. It is national ruin.

The argument now taking shape in some policy and media circles is revealing in ways its authors may not intend. It does not ask whether the war remains winnable on acceptable terms. It does not ask whether the current course serves Ukraine’s long-term survival. It does not ask whether outside powers that encouraged maximalist aims bear responsibility for the disaster that followed. Instead, it asks how much further the manpower base can be stretched, which categories of exemption can be eliminated, and what new social groups can be fed into the front.

This is how a society speaks when people are no longer being treated as citizens to be defended, but as inputs to be managed.

The cruelty is compounded by the way this logic is sanitized abroad. In Western capitals, the suffering required to sustain the war is kept at arm’s length. The young men seized in Odessa or Kharkov do not appear in strategy papers. The wives pulling desperately at recruiting officers do not feature in speeches about democratic values. The hospitals losing medical staff to mobilization do not fit into triumphalist narratives about resilience. The likely next step, women pushed toward the same machinery, is discussed with the emotional register of a workplace inclusion initiative.

Yet the reality is brutally simple. When a state begins scraping the bottom of its demographic barrel, it is not demonstrating strength. It is advertising collapse.

It is worth pausing to consider how abnormal this is. In the mythology that still surrounds modern war in the West, democratic societies fight reluctantly, mobilize consensually, and preserve some visible distinction between necessary sacrifice and state predation. Whatever the truth of that self-image in earlier conflicts, it is becoming impossible to sustain now. There is nothing democratic about men being hunted through the streets to replenish a depleted front. There is nothing noble about extending that system to women and calling it equality. There is nothing humane about watching it happen from afar while insisting that perseverance itself is the strategy.

The deeper scandal is not only in Kiev. It is in Washington, London, Brussels, and the editorial culture that has helped normalize this trajectory. The Western approach to Ukraine has been trapped for many months in a framework of denial. Denial about the military balance. Denial about the effectiveness of sanctions and the limits of matériel. Denial about Russia’s ability to escalate. Denial about Ukraine’s shrinking manpower pool. Denial, above all, about the meaning of a war effort that must increasingly rely on coercion rather than consent.

There is a reason this matters beyond Ukraine itself. Proxy wars encourage a particular form of ethical corruption in the outside powers that sponsor them. They allow officials and commentators to speak in elevated abstractions while other people absorb the blood cost. They reward symbolic toughness over prudence. They turn restraint into disloyalty and negotiation into weakness. Most dangerously, they create a political environment in which almost any sacrifice becomes acceptable, provided it is borne by someone else.

That is the point at which strategy decays into moral vacancy.

The possible mobilization of women should force a reckoning because it exposes, in unusually stark form, what the war has become. If a country has reached the stage where its remaining option is to widen compulsory service to women in order to keep an unwinnable war going, then the proper response is not applause. It is horror and disgust at the spectacle of foreign backers and domestic elites preparing to consume yet another layer of Ukrainian society rather than admit that the strategy they supported has reached a dead end.

A country’s daughters are not the final reserve of someone else’s geopolitical fantasy. Please, Ukraine, don’t cross this line.

The pattern is now too consistent to ignore. Washington leans ever more heavily on sanctions, even after sanctions have repeatedly pushed rivals to build alternative financial channels. It threatens countries whose cooperation it depends on. It expands military commitments while its industrial base struggles to sustain them. It treats the dollar’s central role in the world economy as an instrument to be weaponized rather than a privilege to be preserved. And all the while, it borrows on a staggering scale, assuming that global confidence in American power will remain untouched.

The temptation is to explain such behavior as the product of bad individuals. There is some truth in that. Vanity, ideological rigidity, and political cowardice matter. Leaders can accelerate decline by refusing to absorb unwelcome facts. But the deeper problem lies elsewhere. The United States still operates from a worldview formed in the unipolar moment, even though the material basis for that moment has eroded.

For decades, American power rested on an exceptional combination of military reach, financial dominance, energy insulation, allied dependence, and industrial depth. The country could make mistakes and survive them because the surrounding system absorbed the cost. The dollar remained the world’s refuge. Treasury markets remained the world’s safe harbor. Allies complained but complied. Adversaries had limited room to maneuver. Even policy failures could be hidden inside a larger architecture of confidence.

That architecture is now under strain. Yet Washington behaves as though it still has the same margin for error.

Nowhere is this more visible than in the American addiction to sanctions. Sanctions once seemed like the perfect imperial instrument. They promised coercion without invasion, punishment without body bags, and control without formal occupation. They also depended on a simple premise: that access to the dollar system was so essential, and American influence over allies so extensive, that targeted states would either submit or suffocate.

That premise is weakening. China is not a client state. Russia is not economically isolated in the way Washington once imagined. Many countries that have no love for Tehran still understand the danger of living in a world where the United States can, at any time, treat commerce as a weapon and legal agreements as disposable. Each new sanctions package may inflict pain on its target. It also teaches the rest of the world the same lesson: build escape routes.

This is the paradox at the center of current U.S. strategy. Washington is using the power of the dollar in ways that steadily undermine trust in the dollar. It is trying to defend primacy by making primacy less attractive.

The same contradiction is visible in energy policy and the Persian Gulf. American officials still speak as though they can enforce outcomes by declaration. But chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz are not controlled by press conference. If Iranian oil is forced off the market, prices rise. If shipping through the Gulf becomes unstable, the effects spread far beyond the immediate conflict. Oil is only the first layer. Fertilizer, petrochemicals and other essential goods move through the same arteries. Shortages ripple outward. Insurance rates rise. Supply chains tighten. Inflation returns in forms central bankers cannot easily tame.

In such a setting, “economic warfare” is not a clean substitute for military escalation. It is another name for global self-injury.

The administration’s answer has been to reassure markets that tougher measures will produce stability. But this misunderstands the nature of the problem. Markets do not react only to intent. They react to structure. If a major oil producer is under siege and one of the world’s critical maritime passages is under pressure, no amount of official confidence can erase the underlying risk. Traders see what political messaging tries to blur: the United States has moved from shaping events to reacting to them.

That loss of control would be serious enough on its own. It becomes much more dangerous when paired with America’s fiscal condition.

The United States has now crossed $40 trillion in debt. That figure, by itself, does not tell the whole story. Great powers can carry heavy debt loads for long periods if borrowing costs remain low and confidence remains high. For years, the United States enjoyed exactly that advantage. It could issue debt cheaply because investors assumed that no safer destination existed. American deficits were cushioned by the dollar’s status as the global reserve currency and by the unmatched depth of U.S. capital markets.

But reserve-currency privilege is not a law of nature. It is a political and strategic asset sustained by trust. And trust can erode gradually until it suddenly does not.

The recent strain in long-term Treasury markets should be understood in this light. When demand weakens and yields rise, the issue is not simply technical. It is psychological. Investors are asking whether the United States still represents the kind of long-term stability it once did. If the answer becomes less certain, the implications are profound. A country accustomed to financing global primacy through cheap borrowing can no longer assume that the bill will always be deferred.

This is where foreign policy and financial policy meet. Endless coercion abroad feeds doubt about stability at home. If the United States uses its financial system as a weapon against rivals, third countries begin preparing for a world in which they may one day be targets as well. If Washington piles debt upon debt while showing little capacity for strategic discipline, holding dollars no longer feels like an act of prudence. It begins to feel like an exposure.

That shift is already visible in the steady move by central banks toward gold and in the broader search for payment systems less vulnerable to U.S. pressure. None of this means an overnight collapse of the dollar. Reserve systems die slowly, then all at once. The point is not that the dollar will disappear tomorrow. It is that the United States is steadily encouraging the world to imagine life after dollar supremacy.

That assumption shaped nearly everything. It informed procurement, doctrine, alliance structures, and the wider political culture of American power. A country that could establish air superiority quickly and then exploit it at will possessed a decisive military advantage. Once hostile air defenses were neutralized, American aircraft could roam overhead, strike deeply, provide persistent surveillance, and dismantle enemy infrastructure with a degree of freedom few states could hope to match.

This was not merely a battlefield advantage. It became a habit of mind.

From Iraq to the Balkans to Libya, the United States fought wars in which control of the air was treated not as a hard-won and fragile condition, but as the opening act. Air supremacy was expected, not contested. It was the foundation on which the rest of the campaign would be built.

That era has ended.

The clearest evidence did not come first from Iran, but from Ukraine. Early in the war, many analysts assumed Russia’s larger and more advanced air force would dominate Ukrainian skies. It did not. Instead, one of the most important military lessons of the conflict was that even a powerful air force now faces severe constraints when operating against layered air defenses. Russia retained major advantages in aircraft, missiles, and strike capacity, but in general it did not fly freely into Ukrainian airspace. It adapted by relying more heavily on standoff weapons, glide bombs, and ground-to-ground missiles launched from safe distances.

That adaptation was telling. It revealed a central fact of modern war: a formidable air force can be denied the freedom of action that once defined supremacy.

The same lesson is now visible in the confrontation with Iran.

American and Israeli officials have repeatedly spoken in the language of dominance. At various points, they have implied that Iranian airspace has been effectively mastered and that hostile defenses have been reduced to marginal importance. Yet the pattern of operations suggests something more limited and more cautious.

If the United States and Israel truly possessed uncontested command of the skies, their aircraft would fly repeatedly and deeply into Iranian airspace. They would strike targets across the country with manned aircraft operating at relative freedom. They would rely less on expensive standoff munitions launched from safer distances and less on vulnerable attack drones. In a permissive environment, a superior air force does not merely hit targets. It inhabits the airspace.

That is not what is happening.

Strikes have tended to concentrate in western and southern Iran, where geography shortens the exposure window and permits attacks from more favorable angles. Footage released from operations generally comes not from fighter cockpits ranging freely over Iranian territory, but from drones. The reliance on long-range precision weapons is especially revealing. Standoff munitions can inflict substantial damage, but they are not evidence of true aerial mastery. In many cases, they are evidence that airspace remains too dangerous to enter with confidence.

The fact is that the technologies of denial have improved. Modern air defense interceptors are faster and more accurate than the systems that shaped Western assumptions during the 1990s and early 2000s. Even when they cannot seal off the sky, they can raise the cost of manned flight enough to alter behavior. They can force pilots to remain farther out, reduce sortie flexibility, narrow target sets, and transform what would once have been routine penetration into a calculated gamble.

In earlier eras, pilots had more ability to evade. Aircraft could maneuver against incoming threats with a better chance of survival. That margin has narrowed drastically. Once a modern interceptor is launched and tracking properly, the odds of survival quickly drop towards zero. The effect is psychological as well as operational. Commanders become more cautious not because their air forces are weak, but because the consequences of losing advanced aircraft and trained pilots are too high.

That helps explain another striking feature of the Iran war: the growing dependence on large, expensive drones in contested environments even when those drones are clearly vulnerable.

The MQ-9 Reaper was not designed for sustained survival against capable air defenses. Yet it has been used repeatedly in exactly those conditions, and the results have been sobering. In Yemen, they were shot down with regularity. In the broader confrontation linked to Iran, the losses have mounted again. Each destroyed drone represents not just a high financial cost (over $30 million), but a strategic signal. When a military keeps sending vulnerable unmanned aircraft into hostile skies, despite knowing they are likely to be lost, it may be because those systems are considered more expendable than manned aircraft the military is unwilling to risk.

That is not a picture of invulnerability. It is a picture of adaptation under constraint. Even states that lack a world-class air force can now make the sky dangerous enough to deny their adversaries the freedom they once took for granted, and that denial does not have to be total to be effective. It only has to be sufficient.

For a country like the United States, this creates a particularly difficult challenge because so much of its broader military model depends on freedom of action at distance. The United States does not defend itself primarily by waiting behind its borders. It defends itself by projecting force abroad, reassuring allies, policing key regions, and preserving escalation dominance across several theaters. Air supremacy was central to that model because it made all of those commitments appear manageable. If the air domain becomes more contested, then the cost of maintaining global military primacy rises sharply.

This is not simply a matter of acquiring newer aircraft. The F-35, the B-21, and other advanced systems may preserve important advantages. But no platform can restore the strategic conditions of the 1990s. The problem is not the absence of innovation. It is that countermeasures have spread and matured too. The offense-defense balance has changed.

That requires more than technological adjustment. It requires intellectual adjustment.

For too long, American policymakers have spoken as though air power retained something close to its old freedom. Public language still drifts easily toward claims of complete control, total dominance, and overwhelming superiority. Yet these formulas obscure more than they reveal. A country that relies on standoff missiles because piloted aircraft cannot operate safely overhead is not exercising the same type of power it once did. A force that uses drones as risk absorbers in place of manned penetration is not demonstrating unconstrained command of the sky.

The vocabulary of supremacy survives. The operational reality has changed.

This does not mean the United States is helpless. It means that power has become more reciprocal than Washington prefers to admit. Adversaries no longer need to match America plane for plane to impose meaningful limits. They only need enough defensive competence to make unrestricted air operations prohibitively costly. Once that threshold is crossed, the psychological foundation of American military primacy begins to erode.

The lesson is uncomfortable because it strikes at one of the deepest assumptions in modern U.S. strategy. For a generation, air dominance was the least questioned element of American power. It was the one advantage that seemed beyond serious dispute. Naval reach could be challenged. Occupations could go badly. Proxy wars could become quagmires. But control of the sky remained secure.

No longer. The sky has become a dangerous place.

A narrow answer would focus on immediate gains. Tehran could seek some combination of unfrozen assets, a loosening of sanctions pressure, limits on American military activity in the region, and recognition of its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. Those are tangible objectives. They matter. Any state acting rationally would seek to convert battlefield or strategic advantage into durable concessions.

But there is also a larger possibility, one that is less often stated plainly. Iran’s greatest strategic opportunity may not lie in humiliating the United States. It may lie in driving a political wedge between the United States and Israel.

That split would not take the form of open rupture—at least, not at first. No American administration is likely to declare a dramatic break with Israel. The alliance is too entrenched, too institutionalized, too protected by decades of political consensus. But alliances do not have to collapse in public to weaken in substance. They can erode through blame, strategic divergence, and mounting domestic resentment over costs that no longer seem defensible.

That process is already underway.

The basic tension is straightforward. Israel and the United States do not always want the same thing, even if political rhetoric insists otherwise. Israel has long sought war with Iran, seeing Tehran as the principal obstacle to full regional freedom of action. For much of Washington, by contrast, the priority is more cautious and more practical. It is about maintaining dollar primacy, limiting economic disruption, and avoiding another open-ended military entanglement.

Until recently, the conflict between Israeli and American interests vis-à-vis Iran has been largely kept behind closed doors. Now, it is bursting out into the open.

The more Israel seeks escalation, the more it forces the United States to absorb the consequences. Those consequences are no longer abstract. They include higher energy costs, depleted munitions stockpiles, greater regional instability, and a rising sense among Americans that they are being dragged into conflicts they did not choose and from which they derive no clear benefit.

This is where Iran’s strategy could become more sophisticated than simple retaliation.

Rather than treating the United States and Israel as a single undifferentiated adversary, Tehran could exploit the growing mismatch between them. It could do so by making any de-escalation with Washington contingent not only on immediate bilateral concessions, but on visible pressure being brought to bear on Israel. That pressure could include demands for restraint in Lebanon, an end to the destruction in Gaza, limits on unilateral Israeli military escalation, and a broader recognition that the unresolved Palestinian question is not peripheral to regional instability but central to it.

To many in Washington, such demands would seem excessive. To many in Tehran, that is precisely the point.

There is a familiar and reasonable argument in foreign policy that victorious states should be cautious, moderate, and realistic. In general, this is wise. But when the defeated state is the United States, this sensible approach no longer applies. In practice, the United States reads moderation as weakness. States that lower their demands in hopes of earning a more reasonable American response discover that conciliation invites more pressure, not less. This has been the bitter experience of both Iran and Russia.

If Iran settles only for tactical relief, it may win a reprieve. It will not have altered the deeper structure of the conflict. That structure is rooted in the political and strategic centrality of Israel to American regional policy. As long as that remains untouched, any temporary arrangement risks becoming just that: temporary.

The argument for a broader strategy is not merely ideological. It is, above all, practical. If Tehran seeks only sanctions relief or the unfreezing of assets, Washington may comply in part while preserving the larger alignment that made confrontation inevitable in the first place. If, however, Iran forces the United States to confront the costs of Israel’s regional agenda, then something more consequential begins to happen. The conflict ceases to be a simple contest between Washington and Tehran. It becomes a political contest inside the American system itself.

There are already signs of strain. Across the American political spectrum, the old reflexes are weakening. The moral and strategic costs of unconditional support for Israel are more openly discussed than at any point in recent memory. Even within traditionally hawkish circles, there is visible frustration with the way Israeli actions repeatedly complicate American diplomacy and expose American interests to risks that Washington itself would prefer to avoid.

This does not amount to a realignment. Not yet. But it does mark the beginning of one.

The key to that change is not persuasion so much as pressure. Political systems rarely reconsider entrenched assumptions until those assumptions become expensive. In this case, the expense is becoming harder to ignore. By driving a hard bargain on Israel, Iran will shine a bright light on that expense, making it impossible to ignore.

That is why the next phase of this confrontation may be decided less by bombs than by blame.

If the costs continue to rise, someone in Washington will have to answer for them. If Israel refuses to make concessions in Palestine and Lebanon while America bears the consequences, then the logic of the alliance will come under greater scrutiny. The resulting argument may not begin in moral clarity. It may begin in anger, recrimination, and political self-preservation. That is often how strategic shifts begin.

Iran’s advantage is that it does not need to defeat the United States militarily to accelerate this process. It needs only to make clear that there is no stable return to the old order. No cheap victory. No symbolic strike that restores credibility. No arrangement in which Washington indulges Israeli escalation while insulating itself from the consequences.

In that sense, the most effective Iranian strategy may be the one least expected in Washington. It would aim not simply to end a war, but to rearrange the politics that made the war possible.

This would be a long game, one which would carry risks. Israel, if cornered, is unlikely to respond with calm. American leaders, even when frustrated with Israel, remain constrained by domestic politics and institutional habit. The path from strategic strain to political rupture is neither linear nor guaranteed.

Yet the possibility is now visible in a way it was not before.

A generation ago, the idea that pressure on Israel could become a serious feature of American politics would have seemed fanciful. Today it no longer does. The old consensus has not disappeared, but it is no longer unchallenged. Every regional crisis that exposes the divergence between Israeli ambitions and American interests weakens it a little more.

Tehran should understand the significance of that shift. Its most important task is not merely to survive the present confrontation. It is to shape what follows, and the surest way to do that is not to chase a theatrical victory over the United States. Rather, it is to deepen the contradiction between American interests and Israeli ambitions until Washington is forced, however reluctantly, to make the necessary and logical choice to put its own interests first.

That assumption is now being tested by reality. And reality is not being kind.

The clearest sign is not a dramatic battlefield defeat. It is something quieter and, in its own way, more devastating. It is the growing stream of reports that the United States is short on the munitions required for a prolonged modern conflict. Interceptors, long-range precision weapons, and key missile stocks have been depleted at rates the public was never meant to contemplate. The language of military supremacy remains intact. The material basis for it does not.

This is what makes the recent panic over leaks so revealing. Officials do not react this angrily to falsehoods that can be easily disproved. They react this way when uncomfortable truths are escaping containment. The issue is not merely that the United States has used large quantities of expensive munitions in support of allies and regional operations. It is that replenishment has proven far slower and more difficult than one would expect of a superpower.

This is not simply a matter of accounting. It goes to the heart of how power works.

Military power is not measured by rhetoric alone, nor by the nominal size of a defense budget. It is measured by what can actually be produced, delivered, sustained, and defended under wartime conditions. A country may spend more than any rival in history and still discover, at the moment of crisis, that much of what it bought was insufficient and ill-suited to the wars it now faces.

That appears to be the current position of the United States.

For years, Washington operated under conditions so permissive that its weaknesses were easy to hide. The post-Cold War era encouraged habits of strategic overconfidence. The wars that followed, especially those associated with the War on Terror, rewarded a military geared toward campaigns against weak and technologically inferior adversaries. Enormous sums were poured into platforms optimized for environments where American air dominance could be assumed, where supply lines were secure, and where the enemy could not strike back in serious ways.

That is not the present environment.

The wars now shaping the international system are not colonial expeditions or punitive raids. They are industrial contests. They demand missiles in volume, air defense in depth, resilient supply chains, and the capacity to replace losses quickly. They reward states that can manufacture at scale and adapt under pressure. They punish states that confuse high expenditure with usable strength.

The United States still speaks as if it retains escalation dominance everywhere. Yet in practice, it is failing to maintain the inventories needed to support existing commitments. This has become increasingly visible in Ukraine, where pleas for additional interceptors run up against a basic constraint. The problem is not reluctance in Washington. It is shortage.

Governments can change their minds, but they cannot instantly refill arsenals.

The same problem hovers over the Middle East. A country that cannot easily replenish key weapons stocks and that cannot reliably defend its own regional installations from retaliation is not in the same strategic position it occupied a generation ago. This does not mean the United States is defenseless, far from it. It remains the most heavily armed country in the world. But there is a profound difference between being heavily armed and being prepared for sustained high-intensity war against capable adversaries.

The illusion of abundance has concealed that difference for a long time.

What has made the revelation so jarring is the scale of the mismatch between spending and output. America spends sums on defense that would seem, on paper, to guarantee overwhelming readiness. Yet even now, when the need for production has become impossible to ignore, output increases have been incremental and slow. The problem is not solved by appropriating more money. Money can fund contracts, but cannot instantly create engineers, skilled labor, secure supply chains, or industrial ecosystems that have been hollowed out over decades.

This is one of the least understood facts about military decline. Industrial capacity is not a tap that can be turned on at will. It is an ecosystem of skills, machinery, subcontractors, materials, logistics, and organizational competence. Once degraded, it takes years to rebuild. In some sectors, the essential expertise has become scarce. Factories cannot be improvised through a press release.

In that sense, the weakness now on display is deeper than a temporary shortage. It reflects a broader national transformation. The United States has spent decades shifting away from productive capacity and toward finance, services, and consumption. It has retained immense wealth, but wealth is not the same as manufacturing power. A society can become extraordinarily rich while losing the habit and infrastructure of making things at scale. A nation can preserve the image of military supremacy long after the industrial foundations of that supremacy have eroded.

What is especially dangerous is the strategic psychology that lingers after the material basis has faded. Political leaders continue to speak in maximalist terms. Threats are made casually. Enemies are told they can be obliterated. Entire regions are treated as if they remain subject to the old logic of unquestioned American coercion. Yet if the stockpiles are strained, the factories are slow, and the logistics are fragile, then this style of rhetoric becomes more than irresponsible. It becomes a bluff that may be called.

A state that discovers its conventional power is less overwhelming than it imagined faces a temptation. It can either adjust its ambitions to its means, or it can reach for more dangerous instruments to preserve credibility. This is where logistical decline becomes a matter of strategic risk. If conventional deterrence is weakened, the pressure to rely more heavily on nuclear threats or other forms of extreme escalation can grow.

That does not mean such escalation is inevitable. But it does mean the world is entering a more volatile phase, one in which the old confidence of American statecraft is no longer backed by the same margin of material superiority.

Some of this may prove healthy in the long run. The mythology of limitless force has done immense damage. It encouraged interventions that should never have occurred and commitments that were never sustainable. It persuaded allies that American backing was inexhaustible. It persuaded Washington that military primacy could substitute for strategic restraint. A clearer understanding of limits could, in principle, produce a more sober foreign policy.

But there is no guarantee of sobriety. Declining powers do not always retreat gracefully. They often become more erratic as the gap widens between what they believe they are and what they are actually capable of doing.

That is why the recent admissions matter so much. They are not simply disclosures about inventories. They are glimpses of a structural truth. The United States may still possess extraordinary strength, but it no longer possesses the effortless, unquestioned military dominance that shaped the post-Cold War world. The arsenal is thinner than advertised. The industrial base is much less responsive than assumed. The threats are louder than the underlying capacity justifies.

The mythology has not yet collapsed. In politics, in media, and in elite foreign policy circles, the language of supremacy remains deeply entrenched. But the facts are becoming harder to suppress. Vanishing stockpiles, delayed replenishment, vulnerable bases, and overextended commitments all point in the same direction.

The illusion is evaporating.

And once a great power loses the ability to sustain the image of limitless force, the world begins to reorganize itself accordingly.

The deeper crisis is one of identity.

For decades, the United States did not have to answer basic questions about who it was, what it produced, or what purpose its political system served. Power itself supplied the answer. America was the center of the global order, the issuer of the world’s reserve currency, the military guarantor of allied states, and the country around which economic and diplomatic life was organized. Hegemony gave the nation not only influence but also a kind of borrowed coherence.

That coherence is beginning to fail.

The unipolar moment is over. Other centers of power have emerged. Much of the world is looking for ways to reduce its dependence on Washington, whether in trade, finance, diplomacy, or security. Moreover, the moral authority that once underwrote American leadership has eroded. Endless war, selective appeals to international law, and the open brutality of close allies have done lasting damage. Even where American power remains formidable, American legitimacy has become fragile.

For many countries, this shift creates strategic questions. For the United States, it creates something more unsettling: a civilizational question.

What is America if it is no longer the unquestioned organizer of the world system?

This is not a question the political class is prepared to answer. In fact, much of Washington seems determined not to ask it at all. Instead, both parties continue to speak as if primacy were the natural condition of American life and any movement away from it were a temporary malfunction to be corrected by more spending, more confrontation, and more insistence.

But a country cannot live forever on a memory of dominance.

The problem is not simply that America may be losing relative power. Great powers rise and decline. The problem is that the country has built too much of its economic structure, political imagination, and social psychology around the assumption of permanent supremacy.

The economy offers the clearest example. The United States has become accustomed to consuming beyond its means, borrowing on a vast scale, and relying on the special privileges that come from dollar hegemony. It has allowed large parts of its productive base to hollow out while finance expanded and debt accumulated. This arrangement could survive as long as the world continued to absorb the costs. It becomes far more precarious in a world where alternatives begin to emerge.

A nation that once made things on a continental scale now often struggles to imagine what rebuilding industrial capacity would even require. A society that celebrated production increasingly rewards speculation, administration, and spectacle. Many Americans sense that something fundamental has been lost, even if they cannot name it precisely.

That loss is not only economic. It is moral and cultural.

That strategic logic is failing in real time.

The confrontation with Iran is revealing something Washington has long tried to avoid confronting: the American way of war in the region depends on a basing architecture that is increasingly vulnerable, politically fragile, and militarily unsustainable. At the same time, the U.S. military is facing a type of conflict it was never truly designed to fight, one in which fixed installations are exposed, escalation carries immediate economic costs, and precision retaliation can make even “rear areas” dangerous.

This is not simply a question of whether the United States can bomb Iran. Of course it can. The more important question is whether it can wage a prolonged regional war against Iran while protecting its troops, preserving its alliances, and containing the economic consequences. The answer is looking more doubtful by the day.

The Old Model is Failing

The American military presence in the Gulf was built for an era in which local partners provided territory, the U.S. provided protection, and adversaries lacked the ability to inflict serious damage across the region. That arrangement gave Washington extraordinary freedom of action. Airfields, logistics hubs, naval facilities, and prepositioned assets across the Gulf allowed the United States to sustain operations while reassuring its allies that American power would keep the regional order intact.

But what once seemed like a stable platform for American power has become a source of growing vulnerability. Iran has shown that it can threaten not just American forces, but the physical infrastructure on which Gulf states themselves depend. That includes oil facilities, power plants, refineries, and desalination systems that are essential to daily life in some of the world’s most centralized and geographically exposed states. In many of these countries, critical infrastructure is not deeply dispersed. A small number of sites support enormous portions of the population. That creates a vulnerability that both Tehran and the Gulf monarchies understand well.

This matters because Washington’s military footprint does not exist in a vacuum. It depends on the continued consent of governments that know they may be made to pay a devastating price for hosting American operations. If the United States strikes Iranian infrastructure and Iran responds in kind against Bahrain, Kuwait, or other Gulf states, the burden does not fall on abstract strategic concepts. It falls on states whose water, energy, and commercial life can be disrupted with alarming speed.

That changes the political equation. Gulf governments may still want American protection, but they do not want to become the battlefield on which an American-Iranian war is fought. The more vulnerable they feel, the more likely they are to limit Washington’s freedom of action, quietly pressure for restraint, or restrict the use of their territory altogether.

In other words, the United States is discovering that its bases are only as useful as the willingness of its hosts to remain exposed.

Retreat Is Not a Solution

A natural response is to move personnel and assets farther from the most exposed positions. But here too the logic of the old system is breaking down.

The assumption behind relocation is that distance still provides security. If one set of Gulf bases becomes too dangerous, forces can be shifted to more insulated locations, perhaps farther west, perhaps to Jordan, perhaps into installations considered less vulnerable to immediate Iranian retaliation.

But this assumes a battlefield geometry that may no longer exist.

Iran’s missile and drone capabilities have steadily improved, particularly in accuracy. What was once considered tolerable risk is becoming something closer to persistent exposure. Bases once treated as rear areas are no longer reliably safe. Long range is no longer the protective barrier it once seemed. Consolidation does not necessarily reduce vulnerability. In some cases, it increases it, creating more attractive targets and concentrating personnel and equipment in fewer places.

This has profound operational consequences. A military designed around secure hubs, large installations, and dependable logistical corridors begins to struggle when every node in the network is threatened. Fuel, munitions, maintenance, aircraft staging, intelligence support, and troop housing all become more complicated when there is no true sanctuary.

The result is a strategic paradox. The more pressure Iran puts on the regional basing network, the more the United States is forced to centralize. And the more it centralizes, the more vulnerable it becomes.

That is the clearest lesson of the standoff over Iran. Strip away the bluster, the leaks, the contradictory headlines, and the familiar boasts about strength, and what remains is a more sobering reality: the United States faces three possible courses of action, none of them offering anything close to a clean success.

The first is renewed military escalation against Iran. The second is some form of negotiated arrangement, whether a formal deal or a narrower understanding that freezes the crisis and reopens regional commerce. The third is to postpone the decision, preserve the appearance of control, and let events drift until a larger economic or military rupture forces everyone’s hand.

None of these options is attractive. But that is what happens when a government helps ignite a conflict without a realistic plan for how it ends.

Military escalation risks a broader war that the United States may be unable to control. A diplomatic path runs into the most politically sensitive fact in the region: any real de-escalation would require Washington to say no to Israel. The third option, delay, may be the easiest politically, but it is also the most deceptive, preserving the appearance of control while the costs continue to mount.

Sooner or later, a choice will have to be made.

The most dramatic option, another round of military action, is also the one that seems least viable to anyone looking seriously at the balance of risk. The United States can strike Iran. That has never been the question. The question is whether it can strike Iran and emerge with something that resembles a strategic success rather than a wider regional breakdown.

That prospect appears increasingly doubtful. Iran has already shown it can disrupt shipping, threaten infrastructure across the Gulf, and impose costs well beyond the battlefield. The Strait of Hormuz is not simply another pressure point. It is one of the central arteries of the global economy. Any attempt to resolve the crisis through force risks setting off consequences that would travel quickly from the Gulf to fuel markets, supply chains, inflation data, and food systems around the world.

This is why even many governments aligned with Washington want no part of a new war. The Gulf states understand, perhaps more clearly than anyone in Washington, that they would be exposed first and punished fastest. Their economies, infrastructure, and shipping lanes would sit directly in the line of fire. A conflict sold in Washington as an assertion of resolve could look, from Riyadh, Doha, or Abu Dhabi, like an act of strategic insanity.

There is another problem with the military option. It does not seem likely to produce the political result its advocates once promised. Iran has not emerged from this confrontation cowed or isolated. If anything, it appears more unified, more hardened, and more conscious of its own leverage. A campaign meant to diminish Iranian power may instead have clarified it.

That leaves diplomacy, though even the word may promise more than the moment can deliver. What is reportedly under discussion is less a grand bargain than a mechanism for stepping back from the brink: a ceasefire extension, some easing of maritime restrictions, a framework for further talks, and enough stability to get traffic moving again through the Strait of Hormuz.

This would not be peace in any meaningful sense. It would be a temporary arrangement, fragile by design, meant less to solve the underlying dispute than to prevent immediate disaster. But temporary arrangements have their own value when the alternatives are catastrophic. They can reopen trade, calm energy markets, and give political leaders space to claim success while quietly retreating from a failed gamble.

For Washington, such an arrangement would offer something even more important: an exit.

And yet the diplomatic route runs into a problem that is by now impossible to ignore. Any meaningful de-escalation would require restraining Israel. Not rhetorically, not in private whispers, but in concrete terms. It would require the United States to use the leverage it unquestionably possesses and tell its closest regional ally that certain actions will not be supported, subsidized, or politically protected.

That is where the entire edifice begins to shake.
