TL; DR;

Last week, Microsoft put a team of security agents inside the Defender portal. Six agents: red maps the ways in, blue investigates, green ranks what to fix. Billed in Security Compute Units, each one carrying an Entra Agent ID.

Almost none of the capability is entirely new. Security Copilot was already good at blue. You could already imagine red on top of Defender EASM and Threat Intelligence. What’s new is the orchestration layer, the shared security context, and the fact that Microsoft is framing security work as coordinated agentic labor instead of isolated assistant prompts. We also get the fun of color-coding your work.

Microsoft describes Project Perception as a closed-loop system: red finds exposure, blue investigates, green prioritizes and hardens. But today, the loop still stops at the point where most security programs already struggle: the hand-off from security to engineering. A finding becomes a report. Maybe a ticket. Maybe a backlog item. Maybe a thing everyone agrees is important until the next sprint planning session quietly buries it.

My call: Project Perception eventually gets a GitHub and Azure DevOps surface. The visible signal will be a playbook that ends in a branch, a pull request, or an infrastructure-as-code change instead of a markdown report. But the bigger story is not “security agents will write code.” The bigger story is that Microsoft is building a governed action layer for enterprise agents, and Project Perception is where that layer becomes security-critical.

The pull request is just the easiest actuator to see.

In June I gave the opening keynote at EPN CyberSEC Netherlands in Amsterdam, titled Securing the AI-First Enterprise: why Agentic AI demands Agentic Cybersecurity. The argument was simple enough to fit on one slide. AI collapses the attacker’s timeline. Time to breach, time to exploit, time to exfiltrate, all falling. Your response window closes by exactly the same amount. To defend against machine-speed adversaries, we need machine-speed defenders. I expected to be making that case to boardrooms for another year. Six weeks later Microsoft ships Project Perception.

Then I looked at the colors…

What actually shipped

Hayete Gallot, EVP of Microsoft Security, opened the announcement with a line worth remembering.

Strip the marketing language and the claim holds: the cost of AI-enabled has fallen hard. Defense did not get cheaper at the same rate. Something has to absorb the difference, and it was never going to be headcount. As we’ve seen in pubic reporting and write-ups from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, AI is very capable in more ways than one. Not all of those ways are comfortable for people in the cybersecurity space.

Microsoft’s answer is a coordinated team of agents. Six at launch. One red, four blue, one green.

• The Recon Agent scouts like an attacker: attack paths, choke points, valuable assets, excess permissions. Read-only, and Azure only.

• The blue bench carries most of the load. Triage decides whether an alert is real. Threat Intelligence pulls TTPs and IOCs out of an article. Attack Investigation rebuilds the story behind an incident. Detection Authoring writes the KQL to close the gap it finds.

• Green has exactly one agent: Posture Prioritization, which ranks findings by exploitability, internet reachability and asset criticality.

Six playbooks chain them. The one worth studying is Protect against a threat: it takes a threat intelligence source, runs Threat Intelligence, then Recon, then Posture Prioritization, then Detection Authoring, and feeds each agent’s output into the next.

That is the interesting bit, not the individual agents. It’s the workflow. Microsoft is not just putting Copilot-shaped helpers next to analysts. It is turning security work into an orchestrated chain where one agent’s output becomes another agent’s input. That is the product move. However, the chain still stops before the system changes.

Microsoft says closed loop. I see an open edge

Microsoft’s own language around Project Perception points at a closed-loop system. Red agents expose risk. Blue agents investigate. Green agents remediate and harden. Findings are supposed to become fixes without a hand-off at every step.

That is the right ambition. But a finding only becomes a fix when something changes.

A detection rule changes. A Conditional Access policy changes. A Defender configuration changes. A vulnerable library gets patched. A secret gets rotated. An infrastructure-as-code file changes. A pull request appears.

Today, the most visible green capability is posture prioritization. Useful, and a genuine improvement on a flat vulnerability list. But prioritization is not remediation. Ranking the queue does not empty the queue. Explaining why something matters does not change the system that made it matter.

That is where this really becomes interesting. Project Perception is not interesting because Microsoft shipped security agents; it is interesting that Microsoft is quietly moving security from finding problems to changing systems.

The colors, for anyone who doesn’t live in this

The color codes are worth getting right, because Microsoft picked three of them and the choice tells you something.

• Red is not preventive. That’s the most common misreading. Red simulates a real adversary. Traditional pen testers aren’t there to find every hole, they’re there to prove they can get in and stay under the radar. Usually the SOC doesn’t know they’re coming, and that’s the whole point. If you announce the test, you’re telling someone you’ll be round on Tuesday to check on them. They will ensure everything is tip-top on Monday. You learn less than you think.

• Blue is detection, monitoring and response. The SOC-team. An alert arrives, someone goes and checks whether it’s real, reconstructs the story and decides what to do next. Blue is reactive by design and that isn’t a criticism, it’s the job description.

• Yellow is the builders. Developers, architects, engineers. They write the code and build the systems that red attacks and blue defends. April C. Wright added yellow to the wheel at Black Hat in 2017, in a paper called Orange Is the New Purple, because red and blue had spent a decade arguing with each other while nobody talked to the people writing the code. Yellow usually gets left out of the conversation. In most organizations they’re just called the DevOps team.

• Purple is red and blue working together. Red runs an attack while blue watches whether the detections they built actually fire. Purple is about running the variations until the detection holds across all of them.

• Green makes sure it doesn’t happen again. Not the incident report, not the risk memo and certainly not the “lessons learned“ slide with 4 owners and no due dates. The removal of the thing that caused the incident. Patching the software, chaging the pipeline. Fixing the configuration. Improving error handling. Removing the identity path. Closing the route that made the attack possible.

The mixing works like paint. Red and blue give purple. Blue and yellow give green. Red and yellow give orange. Some versions add white for oversight.

I’m not colorblind, but you can go blind staring at that wheel. What matters is the one relationship: green = blue + yellow.

Which is why Microsoft’s green agent can’t finish the job

Green sits on the seam between the SOC and the software engineers. A real green workflow reads a detection insight and goes back to the code, the pipeline, the architecture. This alert traces to a vulnerable library. This one traces to an over-permissive managed identity. Error handling that was never written, which is why the buffer overflows. An internet-facing management place that should not exist in the first place. Green removes the problem instead of reporting the incident.

That only works when the SOC actually collaborates with real software engineers. In practice, red and blue are well established, purple happens where organizations are mature enough to run it, yellow exists but stays outside the security conversation, and green seems to be very rare.

Now hold Microsoft’s model against that.

Purple is missing from the naming but present in the product. The documented workflow runs blue, then red, then green, then blue again, with findings moving between them automatically. That is purple teaming in product form. Microsoft built it and didn’t use the word, which I suspect is deliberate, because the term carries a lot of history in enterprise SOC conversations.

Green is in the naming but can’t reach far enough yet.

Posture prioritization ranks findings and explains what to fix first and why. That matters a lot, a security teams drown in technically valid findings with no serious prioritization model. A ranked list based on exploitability, reachability and asset criticality is a better operating model than “critical CVEs first” and “who shouted loudest this week”.

Posture prioritization is a genuine improvement on a flat vulnerability list. But it never touches source, pipelines or artifacts, and it can’t, because there’s no yellow agent on the other side of the seam. Microsoft named the color correctly and shipped half of it. In a system built to close the loop from finding to fix, the loop stops at the edge of the codebase.

Project Perception ends in a pull request

We’ve covered the basics of Project Perception whilst in Public preview. Looking ahead, I don’t think we’re seeing the full product yet. Let’s call it a prediction from my end, and we’ll see whether it holds.

Green can’t be finished from inside the Defender portal. The fix often lives elsewhere. a repository, pipeline, policy, configuration file, etc. That means Perception needs a code and configuration surface:

• a connector to GitHub and Azure DevOps

• an agent that reads a finding and proposes a change,

• a playbook that runs the whole chain from threat intelligence through to a remediation artifact or a pull request.

• a human approval gate before impact

I expect that to arrive, and sooner than the preview status suggests, and there are at least four things point that way.

1. The product language already assumes actuators. Microsoft’s own Project Perception material talks about actuators: the mechanism an agent uses to act on its environment, turning a decision into a real-world effect, not just a recommendation. An actuator is not a dashboard, it’s the thing that changes something: detection rule, Defender setting, CA policy, rotated credential, pull request. The architecture already points beyond mere analysis.

2. The models point that way. Perception runs a multi-model architecture, and Microsoft put MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, its first purpose-built cyber model, into the stack. To my knowledge that model is a security fine-tune of MAI-Code-1-Flash, which Microsoft describes on its own model page as “built into GitHub Copilot and VS Code” If the cyber model and the coding model come from the same family, the security work and the development toolchain are already converging one layer below the product.

3. The actuator already exists. The Microsoft Defender for Cloud and GitHub Code Security integration went generally available at Build 2026. Code vulnerabilities get enriched with production signals, and developers remediate through GitHub Copilot Autofix and the Copilot cloud agent, which generate, assign and validate the fix. Microsoft doesn’t need to build the hands. It needs to connect the ones it has to the agents that now do the reasoning.

4. And the output format demands it. A finding that ends in a pull request is worth more than a finding that ends in a markdown report, because one of them changes the system and the other one changes a document. Perception’s whole argument is that a finding should become a fix without a hand-off at every step. Right now the last hand-off is the biggest one: from the SOC to the engineering backlog, where security findings go to age.

Watch the playbooks for the signal. They’re Microsoft-managed and read-only, so you can’t build this yourself and you won’t have to guess when it lands. The day a playbook appears that takes a threat intelligence source and ends in a branch, green is real.

At that point you don’t have a DevOps team any more. You have a DevSecOps team, and this time the security half of the name is doing actual work rather than attending the sprint review. Same threat intelligence input, two ways to act on it: Detection Authoring writes KQL for a technique while a yellow agent patches that technique out of the code. That’s the first genuinely new operating model I’ve seen proposed for this, and it’s why I read Perception as inevitable rather than optional.

The Pull request is probably not the end-state, but the easiest one to see. I recon, that green agents will not stop at code. Pull requests are the developer-facing version of a larger pattern: infrastructure-as-remediation, policy-as-remediation, configuration-as-remediation and workflow-as-remediation.

Where Purview belongs, and where it doesn’t yet

Now the part closest to my own work, and the part I think is least finished.

A Recon Agent session output is a tenant-specific map of privilege paths, choke points and lateral movement options. It arrives in the Outputs panel as a markdown report with a Download button beside it. That file is not just another security path, it’s a machine-generated attack graph for your environment.

Organizations routinely classify customer data, intellectual property and source code. Project Perception introduces another awkward category: machine-generated offensive intelligence. In many environments, an attack-path report is more dangerous than the documents it references.

Sessions are immutable inside Defender, which covers what the agent did, not what happens to the output afterwards. That needs Purview: a label on agent-generated reports, DLP on the download, retention, an Insider Risk indicator on the analyst who exported eleven attack path maps in a week and then resigned. To my knowledge none of it is wired end-to-end yet, and I’d like to be wrong. Security Copilot already flows into the unified audit log and DSPM for AI, so the precedent exists. Work IQ also leans heavily on permission-aware governance, observability, runtime policy and tenant boundaries. The direction of travel is clear. The specific Perception-to-Purview control plane is the part I would watch.

The more interesting integration runs the other way. Posture Prioritization ranks by exploitability, reachability and asset criticality, and asset criticality is an infrastructure answer. A storage account holding classified customer records and one holding build logs are identical infrastructure and completely different risk. Join Purview classification into Perception’s context layer and green stops ranking by blast radius and starts ranking by consequence.

Microsoft has proved the pattern elsewhere. The Defender for Cloud and GitHub Code Security integration already enriches code findings with data sensitivity. That signal reaches a pull request, not the posture agent a few menu items away in the same portal.

The interface tells you something too

One observation that’s small alone and adds up. The Perception session experience looks and behaves like Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork. A conversation feed carrying progress updates. Completion markers reading Done in 4 min. An agent counter showing 4/4. An Inputs panel. An Outputs panel with downloadable files. A box at the bottom labeled Ask about this session.

Are we looking at the beginnings of a “Super App” for Cybersecurity Satya Nadella referred to during the Q4 FY2026 earnings call? Maybe not exactly; as this was more or less focused on Microsoft 365 Copilot, but the idea is there.

The color Microsoft didn’t ship

Some versions of the wheel carry a fourth designation. Mix all colors together, and you’ll get: white; oversight, governance. The people who decide what good looks like and hold the line when the pressure to move faster shows up.

Perception’s whole safety story rests there. High-impact actions pause at an approval gate. Humans review, approve, reject or redirect. Strategy stays with people, scale goes to the agents. I agree with that design. It’s close to what I argued on stage in June: AI-led, human-owned.

But an approval gate is only a control while someone exercises judgment at it. Six agents running coordinated playbooks across your estate will produce approval requests faster than a person reads them, and anyone who has run a SOC knows what happens to a queue that outpaces its reviewers. The failure mode isn’t a rogue agent. It’s a tired analyst approving the fourteenth request of the night because the first thirteen were fine.

We’ve all read that some AI models are escaping their sandbox during cyber evaluation, chained a zero-day into internet access, moved laterally across clusters and (b)reached 3rd party system, all to steal the answer key to the benchmark they were being scored on. Nobody drove it. Those models weren’t malicious either. They were given an objective and pursued it past every boundary someone had assumed was holding.

Your approval gate is a boundary someone assumed was holding.

Microsoft can ship red, blue, green and eventually yellow. White is the one you staff yourself, and it’s the one that decides whether any of this holds.

TL; DR;

Vorige week zette Microsoft een team van securityagents in de Defender-portal. Zes agents: rood brengt de toegangswegen in kaart, blauw onderzoekt, groen bepaalt de volgorde van wat je moet oplossen. Afgerekend in Security Compute Units, elk met een eigen Entra Agent ID.

Vrijwel niets van die capaciteit is volledig nieuw. Security Copilot was al goed in blauw. Rood kon je al voor je zien bovenop Defender EASM en Threat Intelligence. Wat wel nieuw is: de orkestratielaag, de gedeelde securitycontext, en het feit dat Microsoft securitywerk neerzet als gecoördineerde agentic arbeid in plaats van losse assistent-prompts. En we krijgen er het plezier van kleurcodering bij.

Misschien een backlog-item. Misschien iets waarvan iedereen vindt dat het belangrijk is, totdat de volgende sprint planning het stilletjes begraaft.

Mijn inschatting: Project Perception krijgt uiteindelijk een GitHub- en Azure DevOps-oppervlak. Het zichtbare signaal wordt een playbook dat eindigt in een branch, een pull request of een infrastructure-as-code-wijziging in plaats van een markdown-rapport. Maar het grotere verhaal is niet “securityagents gaan code schrijven”. Het grotere verhaal is dat Microsoft een gegoverneerde actielaag bouwt voor enterprise agents, en dat Project Perception de plek is waar die laag security-kritisch wordt.

De pull request is simpelweg de makkelijkst zichtbare actuator.

Zes weken later levert Microsoft Project Perception.

En toen keek ik naar de kleuren...

Wat er daadwerkelijk is geleverd

Haal de marketingtaal eraf en de claim houdt stand: de kosten van AI-gedreven aanvallen zijn hard gedaald. Verdediging werd niet in hetzelfde tempo goedkoper. Iets moet dat verschil opvangen, en dat ging nooit headcount worden. Zoals we hebben gezien in openbare rapportages en publicaties van OpenAI, Anthropic en Meta, AI is op meerdere manieren bijzonder capabel. Niet al die manieren zijn comfortabel voor mensen in het cybersecurityvak.

Microsofts antwoord is een gecoördineerd team van agents. Zes bij de start. Eén rood, vier blauw, één groen.

• De Recon Agent verkent als een aanvaller: aanvalspaden, choke points, waardevolle assets, overmatige permissies. Read-only, en alleen Azure.

• De blauwe bank draagt het meeste gewicht. Triage bepaalt of een alert echt is. Threat Intelligence haalt TTP’s en IOC’s uit een artikel. Attack Investigation reconstrueert het verhaal achter een incident. Detection Authoring schrijft de KQL om het gat te dichten dat het vindt.

• Groen heeft precies één agent: Posture Prioritization, die findings rangschikt op exploiteerbaarheid, bereikbaarheid vanaf internet en assetkriticaliteit.

Zes playbooks koppelen ze aan elkaar. Degene die het bestuderen waard is, is Protect against a threat: die neemt een threat intelligence-bron, draait Threat Intelligence, dan Recon, dan Posture Prioritization, dan Detection Authoring, en voert de output van elke agent door naar de volgende.

Dát is het interessante deel, niet de individuele agents. Het gaat om de workflow. Microsoft zet niet gewoon Copilot-vormige hulpjes naast analisten. Het verandert securitywerk in een georkestreerde keten waarin de output van de ene agent de input van de volgende wordt. Dat is de productzet. De keten stopt alleen nog steeds vóór het systeem verandert.

Microsoft zegt closed loop, ik zie een open einde

Microsofts eigen taal rond Project Perception wijst op een closed-loop systeem. Rode agents leggen risico bloot. Blauwe agents onderzoeken. Groene agents remediëren en hardenen. Findings horen fixes te worden zonder een overdracht bij elke stap.

Dat is de juiste ambitie. Maar een finding wordt pas een fix wanneer er iets verandert.

Een detectieregel verandert. Een Conditional Access-policy verandert. Een Defender-configuratie verandert. Een kwetsbare library wordt gepatcht. Een secret wordt geroteerd. Een infrastructure-as-code-bestand verandert. Er verschijnt een pull request.

Vandaag is de zichtbaarste groene capaciteit posture prioritization. Nuttig, en een echte verbetering ten opzichte van een platte kwetsbaarhedenlijst. Maar prioriteren is geen remediëren. De wachtrij ordenen maakt de wachtrij niet leeg. Uitleggen waarom iets ertoe doet, verandert niet het systeem dat het liet ontstaan.

Dat is waar het echt interessant wordt. Project Perception is niet interessant omdat Microsoft securityagents heeft geleverd; het is interessant dat Microsoft security stilletjes verschuift van problemen vinden naar systemen veranderen.

De kleuren, voor iedereen die hier niet in leeft

De kleurcodes zijn het waard om goed te krijgen, want Microsoft koos er drie en die keuze zegt iets.

• Rood is niet preventief. Dat is de meest voorkomende misvatting. Rood simuleert een echte tegenstander. Traditionele pentesters zijn er niet om elk gat te vinden, ze zijn er om te bewijzen dat ze binnen kunnen komen en onder de radar kunnen blijven. Meestal weet het SOC niet dat ze eraan komen, en dat is nu juist het punt. Als je de test aankondigt, vertel je iemand dat je dinsdag langskomt om te controleren. Dan zorgen ze dat op maandag alles piekfijn in orde is. Je leert er minder van dan je denkt.

• Blauw is detectie, monitoring en response. Het SOC-team. Er komt een alert binnen, iemand kijkt of die echt is, reconstrueert het verhaal en bepaalt de volgende stap. Blauw is reactief van opzet, en dat is geen kritiek, dat is de functieomschrijving.

• Geel zijn de bouwers. Developers, architecten, engineers. Zij schrijven de code en bouwen de systemen die rood aanvalt en blauw verdedigt. April C. Wright voegde geel toe aan het wiel op Black Hat in 2017, in een paper genaamd Orange Is the New Purple, omdat rood en blauw tien jaar lang met elkaar hadden staan ruziën terwijl niemand sprak met de mensen die de code schreven. Geel wordt meestal buiten het gesprek gehouden. In de meeste organisaties heet dat gewoon het DevOps-team.

• Paars is rood en blauw die samenwerken. Rood voert een aanval uit terwijl blauw kijkt of de detecties die ze hebben gebouwd daadwerkelijk afgaan. Paars draait de varianten net zo lang tot de detectie over de hele linie standhoudt.

• Groen zorgt dat het niet opnieuw gebeurt. Niet het incidentrapport, niet het risicomemo en zeker niet de “lessons learned”-slide met vier eigenaren en geen deadline. Het wegnemen van datgene wat het incident veroorzaakte. De software patchen, de pipeline aanpassen. De configuratie herstellen. Foutafhandeling verbeteren. Het identiteitspad verwijderen. De route sluiten die de aanval mogelijk maakte.

Het mengen werkt als verf. Rood en blauw geven paars. Blauw en geel geven groen. Rood en geel geven oranje. Sommige versies voegen wit toe voor toezicht.

Ik ben niet kleurenblind, maar je kunt blind worden van dat wiel. Waar het om gaat is die ene relatie: groen = blauw + geel.

Daarom kan Microsofts groene agent de klus niet afmaken

Groen zit op de naad tussen het SOC en de software engineers. Een echte groene workflow leest een detectie-inzicht en gaat terug naar de code, de pipeline, de architectuur. Deze alert is te herleiden tot een kwetsbare library. Deze tot een te ruim ingerichte managed identity. Foutafhandeling die nooit geschreven is, en daarom loopt de buffer over. Een managementinterface die aan het internet hangt en er sowieso niet had moeten zijn. Groen neemt het probleem weg in plaats van het incident te rapporteren.

Dat werkt alleen als het SOC daadwerkelijk samenwerkt met echte software engineers. In de praktijk zijn rood en blauw goed ingericht, gebeurt paars daar waar organisaties volwassen genoeg zijn om het te draaien, bestaat geel maar blijft het buiten het securitygesprek, en lijkt groen zeldzaam.

Houd Microsofts model daar nu eens tegenaan.

Paars ontbreekt in de naamgeving maar zit wel in het product. De gedocumenteerde workflow draait blauw, dan rood, dan groen, dan weer blauw, waarbij findings automatisch tussen ze door bewegen. Dat is purple teaming in productvorm. Microsoft bouwde het en gebruikte het woord niet, wat volgens mij bewust is, omdat de term veel geschiedenis met zich meedraagt in enterprise SOC-gesprekken.

Groen zit in de naamgeving maar reikt nog niet ver genoeg.

Posture prioritization rangschikt findings en legt uit wat je eerst moet oplossen en waarom. Dat doet er veel toe, want securityteams verzuipen in technisch valide findings zonder serieus prioriteringsmodel. Een gerangschikte lijst op basis van exploiteerbaarheid, bereikbaarheid en assetkriticaliteit is een beter operationeel model dan “kritieke CVE’s eerst” en “wie deze week het hardst riep”.

Posture prioritization is een echte verbetering ten opzichte van een platte kwetsbaarhedenlijst. Maar het raakt nooit source, pipelines of artifacts, en dat kan ook niet, want er staat geen gele agent aan de andere kant van de naad. Microsoft benoemde de kleur correct en leverde de helft ervan. In een systeem dat gebouwd is om de loop van finding naar fix te sluiten, stopt de loop aan de rand van de codebase.

Project Perception eindigt in een pull request

We hebben de basis van Project Perception behandeld terwijl het in public preview zit. Vooruitkijkend denk ik niet dat we het volledige product al zien. Laten we het een voorspelling van mijn kant noemen, en dan zien we of die standhoudt.

Groen kan niet worden afgemaakt vanuit de Defender-portal. De fix ligt vaak elders: een repository, pipeline, policy, configuratiebestand, enzovoort. Dat betekent dat Perception een code- en configuratieoppervlak nodig heeft:

• een connector naar GitHub en Azure DevOps

• een agent die een finding leest en een wijziging voorstelt

• een playbook dat de hele keten draait, van threat intelligence tot een remediation-artifact of een pull request

• een menselijke goedkeuringspoort vóór impact

Ik verwacht dat dat komt, en eerder dan de previewstatus doet vermoeden. Er zijn minstens vier dingen die die kant op wijzen.

1. De producttaal gaat al uit van actuators. Microsofts eigen Project Perception-materiaal spreekt over actuators: het mechanisme waarmee een agent op zijn omgeving inwerkt en een beslissing omzet in een effect in de echte wereld, niet slechts een aanbeveling. Een actuator is geen dashboard, het is het ding dat iets verandert: detectieregel, Defender-instelling, CA-policy, geroteerde credential, pull request. De architectuur wijst al voorbij pure analyse.

2. De modellen wijzen die kant op. Perception draait op een multi-model architectuur, en Microsoft zette MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, het eerste doelgebouwde cybermodel, in de stack. Naar mijn weten is dat model een security fine-tune van MAI-Code-1-Flash, dat Microsoft op zijn eigen modelpagina beschrijft als “built into GitHub Copilot and VS Code”. Als het cybermodel en het codeermodel uit dezelfde familie komen, dan convergeren het securitywerk en de development-toolchain al één laag onder het product.

3. De actuator bestaat al. De integratie tussen Microsoft Defender for Cloud en GitHub Code Security werd generally available op Build 2026. Codekwetsbaarheden worden verrijkt met productiesignalen, en developers remediëren via GitHub Copilot Autofix en de Copilot cloud agent, die de fix genereren, toewijzen en valideren. Microsoft hoeft de handen niet te bouwen. Het moet de handen die het heeft verbinden met de agents die nu het redeneerwerk doen.

4. En het outputformaat vraagt erom. Een finding die eindigt in een pull request is meer waard dan een finding die eindigt in een markdown-rapport, want de één verandert het systeem en de ander verandert een document. Perceptions hele argument is dat een finding een fix moet worden zonder overdracht bij elke stap. Op dit moment is de laatste overdracht de grootste: van het SOC naar de engineering-backlog, waar securityfindings liggen te verouderen.

Kijk naar de playbooks voor het signaal. Ze zijn Microsoft-managed en read-only, dus je kunt dit niet zelf bouwen en je hoeft ook niet te gissen wanneer het landt. De dag dat er een playbook verschijnt dat een threat intelligence-bron neemt en eindigt in een branch, is groen echt.

Op dat moment heb je geen DevOps-team meer. Dan heb je een DevSecOps-team, en deze keer doet de securityhelft van de naam echt werk in plaats van bij de sprint review aan te schuiven. Dezelfde threat intelligence-input, twee manieren om erop te handelen: Detection Authoring schrijft KQL voor een techniek terwijl een gele agent diezelfde techniek uit de code patcht. Dat is het eerste werkelijk nieuwe operationele model dat ik hiervoor voorgesteld heb zien worden, en het is de reden dat ik Perception lees als onvermijdelijk in plaats van optioneel.

De pull request is waarschijnlijk niet het eindpunt, maar wel het makkelijkst zichtbare. Ik vermoed dat groene agents niet bij code zullen stoppen. Pull requests zijn de developer-variant van een groter patroon: infrastructure-as-remediation, policy-as-remediation, configuration-as-remediation en workflow-as-remediation.

Waar Purview thuishoort, en waar nog niet

Nu het deel dat het dichtst bij mijn eigen werk ligt, en het deel dat volgens mij het minst af is.

De output van een Recon Agent-sessie is een tenant-specifieke kaart van privilege-paden, choke points en lateral movement-opties. Die komt binnen in het Outputs-paneel als markdown-rapport met een Download-knop ernaast. Dat bestand is niet zomaar een securityartefact, het is een machinaal gegenereerde attack graph van jouw omgeving.

Organisaties classificeren routinematig klantdata, intellectueel eigendom en broncode. Project Perception introduceert nog een ongemakkelijke categorie: machinaal gegenereerde offensieve intelligence. In veel omgevingen is een attack path-rapport gevaarlijker dan de documenten waarnaar het verwijst.

Sessies zijn immutable binnen Defender, wat dekt wat de agent deed, niet wat er daarna met de output gebeurt. Daar is Purview voor nodig: een label op agent-gegenereerde rapporten, DLP op de download, retentie, een Insider Risk-indicator op de analist die in één week elf attack path-maps exporteerde en vervolgens ontslag nam. Naar mijn weten is daar nog niets end-to-end van bedraad, en ik zou graag ongelijk hebben. Security Copilot stroomt al door naar de unified audit log en DSPM for AI, dus het precedent bestaat. Work IQ leunt ook zwaar op permission-aware governance, observability, runtime policy en tenantgrenzen. De richting is duidelijk. Het specifieke Perception-naar-Purview control plane is het deel dat ik in de gaten zou houden.

De interessantere integratie loopt de andere kant op. Posture Prioritization rangschikt op exploiteerbaarheid, bereikbaarheid en assetkriticaliteit, en assetkriticaliteit is een infrastructuurantwoord. Een storage account met geclassificeerde klantgegevens en één met build logs zijn identieke infrastructuur en compleet verschillend risico. Voeg Purview-classificatie toe aan Perceptions contextlaag en groen stopt met rangschikken op blast radius en begint met rangschikken op consequentie.

Microsoft heeft het patroon elders al bewezen. De integratie tussen Defender for Cloud en GitHub Code Security verrijkt codefindings al met datagevoeligheid. Dat signaal bereikt een pull request, maar niet de posture-agent een paar menu-items verderop in dezelfde portal.

De interface zegt ook iets

Eén observatie die op zichzelf klein is en optelt. De Perception-sessie-ervaring ziet eruit en gedraagt zich als Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork. Een gespreksfeed met voortgangsupdates. Voltooiingsmarkeringen die Done in 4 min melden. Een agentteller die 4/4 toont. Een Inputs-paneel. Een Outputs-paneel met downloadbare bestanden. Een invoerveld onderaan met het label Ask about this session.

Kijken we hier naar het begin van de "Super App" voor cybersecurity waar Satya Nadella naar verwees tijdens de Q4 FY2026 earnings call? Misschien niet precies, want die was meer of minder gericht op Microsoft 365 Copilot, maar het idee ligt er.

De kleur die Microsoft niet leverde

Sommige versies van het wiel dragen een vierde aanduiding. Meng alle kleuren en je krijgt wit: toezicht, governance. De mensen die bepalen hoe goed eruitziet en die de lijn vasthouden wanneer de druk om sneller te gaan zich aandient.

Perceptions hele veiligheidsverhaal rust daarop. High-impact acties pauzeren bij een goedkeuringspoort. Mensen beoordelen, keuren goed, wijzen af of sturen bij. Strategie blijft bij mensen, schaal gaat naar de agents. Ik ben het eens met dat ontwerp. Het ligt dicht bij wat ik in juni op het podium betoogde: AI-led, human-owned.

Maar een goedkeuringspoort is alleen een control zolang iemand daar oordeelsvermogen uitoefent. Zes agents die gecoördineerde playbooks over je estate draaien, produceren goedkeuringsverzoeken sneller dan een mens ze leest, en wie ooit een SOC heeft gerund weet wat er gebeurt met een wachtrij die zijn beoordelaars voorbijloopt. De faalmodus is niet een rogue agent. Het is een vermoeide analist die het veertiende verzoek van de nacht goedkeurt omdat de eerste dertien in orde waren.

We hebben allemaal gelezen dat sommige AI-modellen tijdens cyberevaluaties uit hun sandbox ontsnappen, een zero-day aan internettoegang koppelen, lateraal door clusters bewegen en systemen van derden binnendringen, allemaal om de antwoordsleutel te stelen van de benchmark waarop ze werden beoordeeld. Niemand stuurde dat aan. Die modellen waren ook niet kwaadaardig. Ze kregen een doel en achtervolgden dat voorbij elke grens waarvan iemand had aangenomen dat die standhield.

Jouw goedkeuringspoort is een grens waarvan iemand aanneemt dat die standhoudt.

Microsoft kan rood, blauw, groen en uiteindelijk geel leveren. Wit is de kleur die je zelf bemant, en het is de kleur die bepaalt of dit alles standhoudt.

Something quietly significant happened when Microsoft integrated the GitHub Copilot harness into Copilot Studio. For most organisations already running Microsoft 365 Copilot, it looked like a tidy product update, one more capability added to a platform they were still learning to use. But beneath the surface, it introduced a cost dimension that is not yet well understood, even among seasoned practitioners. The central question is no longer simply what Copilot can do. It is what Copilot will cost, under which conditions, and who inside the organisation is responsible for keeping track. Getting that distinction right matters more than most decision-makers currently appreciate.

Three harnesses, one platform

Copilot Studio now hosts three distinct harnesses: the GitHub Copilot harness, the Standard harness, and the Copilot Chat harness. A harness is the software scaffolding that enables an agent to plan, reason, maintain context, and interact with tools, systems, or other agents to complete tasks. Harnesses can be optimised for different results depending on the desired outcome, and in certain scenarios the selected harness also affects how Copilot Credits are consumed.

The GitHub Copilot harness is designed to optimise end-to-end business processes with an agentic build experience. It is also where credit consumption is most granular, applying to both the creation phase and runtime execution. Importantly, not every activity within the harness triggers a charge. No Copilot Credits are consumed for manual configuration, including work performed in the Build and Monitor tabs. Credits apply specifically to LLM-powered activities such as natural language authoring, preview and evaluation, and runtime execution.

The Standard harness is designed to create rule-based conversational agents with predefined topics and flows. The Copilot Chat harness, by contrast, enables organisations to customise Microsoft 365 Copilot with their own knowledge, for example an employee onboarding agent that answers questions from SharePoint content. Both harnesses are billed through Copilot Credits, with one important exception: these rates do not apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot users in authenticated B2E scenarios. In practice, this means the licensing exemption is specific. It applies when a licensed employee interacts directly with an agent in an authenticated context, not as a blanket rule for all employee-facing interactions.

The currency layer and what it obscures

Copilot Credits serve as the common currency across Microsoft’s usage-based AI model, powering capabilities that span Copilot Cowork, agent solutions built with Microsoft Copilot Studio, AI-powered features in Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, and Work IQ APIs for agent and AI solutions. The number of credits consumed for each response, action, or operation depends on the complexity of the task performed. Credits are pooled at the tenant level, and an organisation’s total cost is based on the sum of credits consumed across all supported experiences. This shared model enables organisations to centrally manage consumption and allocate usage across scenarios.

The practical challenge is that credits create an abstraction layer between actual usage and actual cost. This is not unique to Microsoft. Gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite have long used in-game currencies, often several layers of them, precisely because they make it harder for users to track what they are spending in real money. Whether that analogy is entirely fair to Microsoft is debatable, but the structural parallel is worth naming.

The more immediate problem is organisational behaviour. Two distinct failure modes are emerging inside companies deploying Copilot agents. Some teams are so cautious about credit consumption that they avoid complex agent scenarios altogether, leaving significant productivity gains unrealised. Others connect everything without governance, accumulating costs that arrive as a surprise at the end of the billing cycle. Neither posture reflects deliberate strategy, and both are avoidable.

What practitioners and decision-makers need to do now

The first practical step is clarity of categorisation. Before deploying any agent, teams need to answer two design questions: which harness is right for this use case, and who will interact with it? Agents built through the Standard and Copilot Chat harnesses are billed through Copilot Credits, unless used by Microsoft 365 Copilot users in authenticated B2E scenarios. Mapping those boundaries explicitly before deployment prevents billing surprises and keeps stakeholder conversations grounded in fact.

The second priority is governance. Copilot Credit usage is centrally managed through the Microsoft 365 admin center, giving administrators the tools to govern AI consumption across workloads, services, and agents. Administrators can monitor spend and usage, configure spend policies, define usage thresholds, and manage credit allocation across the organisation. A useful frame is to treat Copilot Credits the way a cloud infrastructure team treats compute or storage: set budgets, assign owners, and build alerting before usage scales.

The third implication concerns platform trajectory. The integration of the GitHub Copilot harness into Copilot Studio is almost certainly an early signal of broader convergence. As AI workloads become more advanced, particularly with multi-step, agent-driven scenarios, the amount of work required to complete a task varies significantly. That variability is best served by a usage-based model that aligns cost to the work performed, complementing subscription-based services with flexible consumption. Practitioners should expect more capabilities to arrive under the credit model over time. Planning for that trajectory now is the more defensible position for any organisation with serious AI ambitions.

What to watch next

The core takeaway is this: Microsoft’s pricing model for AI agents is not opaque by intention, but it does require active interpretation. The three-harness structure, once understood, is internally consistent. The challenge is that most organisations have not yet invested the time to understand it, and the platform evolves faster than internal governance processes typically move.

Three things are worth monitoring in the coming months. First, how Microsoft clarifies the credit model as the GitHub Copilot harness matures and adoption scales. Second, whether organisational demand for cost transparency accelerates the development of native monitoring tooling within Copilot Studio itself. And third, which additional workloads are pulled into the credit economy, given that Copilot Credits are already available through both a pay-as-you-go meter and a pre-purchase plan. That expansion will reshape the total cost of ownership for Microsoft AI deployments more substantially than any single licensing change to date.

The organisations that get ahead of this are not necessarily the ones running the most agents. They are the ones that know exactly what each agent costs, and have decided that cost is worth paying.

Een harnas is het softwaregeraamte dat een agent in staat stelt te plannen, redeneren, context bij te houden en te communiceren met tools, systemen of andere agents om taken te voltooien. Harnassen kunnen worden geoptimaliseerd voor verschillende doeleinden, en in bepaalde scenario’s beïnvloedt de keuze van het harnas ook het verbruik van Copilot Credits.

Het GitHub Copilot-harnas is ontworpen om end-to-end bedrijfsprocessen te optimaliseren met een agentische bouwervaring. Het is ook het harnas waarbij het creditverbruik het meest gedetailleerd is, zowel tijdens de aanmaakfase als bij runtime-uitvoering. Het aantal verbruikte credits per respons, actie of bewerking hangt af van de complexiteit van de uitgevoerde taak. Het meest urgente probleem is het gedrag van organisaties. Twee duidelijke patronen tekenen zich af bij bedrijven die Copilot-agents uitrollen. Sommige teams zijn zo voorzichtig met creditverbruik dat ze complexe agentscenario’s volledig vermijden, waardoor aanzienlijke productiviteitswinsten onbenut blijven. Anderen koppelen alles aan elkaar zonder enige governance, waardoor kosten zich opstapelen die aan het einde van de factureringsperiode als een verrassing komen. Geen van beide houdingen weerspiegelt een bewuste strategie, en beide zijn vermijdbaar.

Wat gebruikers en beslissers nu moeten doen

De eerste praktische stap is duidelijkheid over categorisering. Voordat een agent wordt ingezet, moeten teams twee ontwerpvragen beantwoorden: welk harnas past bij deze use case, en wie gaat er mee werken? Agents die zijn gebouwd via het Standard- en Copilot Chat-harnas worden gefactureerd via Copilot Credits, tenzij ze worden gebruikt door Microsoft 365 Copilot-gebruikers in geverifieerde B2E-scenario’s. Die grenzen expliciet vastleggen vóór de uitrol voorkomt verrassingen op de factuur en houdt gesprekken met stakeholders feitelijk gegrond.

De tweede prioriteit is governance. Het verbruik van Copilot Credits wordt centraal beheerd via het Microsoft 365-beheercentrum, dat administrators de tools biedt om het AI-verbruik te bewaken over workloads, services en agents heen. Administrators kunnen verbruik en uitgaven monitoren, bestedingsbeleid instellen, gebruiksdrempels definiëren en de verdeling van credits over de organisatie beheren. Een bruikbaar referentiekader is om Copilot Credits te behandelen zoals een cloud-infrastructuurteam rekenkracht of opslag behandelt: stel budgetten in, wijs eigenaren aan en richt meldingen in voordat het gebruik opschaalt.

De derde implicatie betreft de platformrichting. De integratie van het GitHub Copilot-harnas in Copilot Studio is vrijwel zeker een vroeg signaal van bredere convergentie. Naarmate AI-workloads geavanceerder worden, met name bij meerstapsmatige en agentgestuurde scenario’s, varieert de hoeveelheid werk die nodig is om een taak te voltooien aanzienlijk. Die variabiliteit vraagt om een verbruiksmodel dat kosten koppelt aan het uitgevoerde werk, als aanvulling op abonnementsservices. Practitioners kunnen verwachten dat er in de loop van de tijd meer mogelijkheden onder het creditmodel worden gebracht. Wie daar nu al op inspeelt, staat sterker dan wie reageert op elke nieuwe toevoeging afzonderlijk.

Wat te volgen in de komende tijd

De kern van de boodschap is deze: het prijsmodel van Microsoft voor AI-agents is niet bewust ondoorzichtig, maar het vereist wel actieve interpretatie. De structuur met drie harnassen is, eenmaal begrepen, intern consistent. De uitdaging is dat de meeste organisaties er nog niet de tijd in hebben geïnvesteerd om het te doorgronden, terwijl het platform sneller evolueert dan interne governanceprocessen doorgaans bijhouden.

Drie ontwikkelingen verdienen de komende maanden aandacht. Ten eerste: hoe Microsoft het creditmodel verduidelijkt naarmate het GitHub Copilot-harnas volwassener wordt en de adoptie toeneemt. Ten tweede: of de organisatorische vraag naar kostentransparantie de ontwikkeling van native monitoringtools binnen Copilot Studio versnelt. En ten derde: welke extra workloads in de crediteconomie worden opgenomen, gegeven dat Copilot Credits al beschikbaar zijn via zowel een pay-as-you-go-meter als een vooruitbetaalplan. Die uitbreiding zal de totale eigendomskosten van Microsoft AI-implementaties ingrijpender veranderen dan welke afzonderlijke licentiewijziging dan ook.

De organisaties die hier een voorsprong op nemen zijn niet per se die met de meeste agents. Het zijn de organisaties die precies weten wat elke agent kost, en die bewust hebben besloten dat die kosten de moeite waard zijn.

When we read “not supported“ in the Connector overview, we tend to read that as “Purview can see but not control these aspects within Claude“ and ultimately someone might think they need another product to close that gap. That line of thinking might be true for some organizations, but for a lot of them it’s wrong for one specific reason: the DSPM capability table describes a connector, and some people might treat it as though it described Purview. Most of the controls we’re going to discuss here have existed for years.

Here is an architecture type overview that we’ll explore.

Let’s dive into what each layer does for Claude

1. Identity: Entra SSO, SCIM, Conditional Access requiring a compliant device

2. Endpoint: Endpoint DLP restricted app groups blocking Claude processes from opening sensitive files, and MDM-delivered managed settings

3. Network: SSE or SASE feeding Purview Network Data Security. Destination governance across every surface, including Claude CLI

4. Connector: Compliance API into DSPM for AI. Visibility only, as covered in my earlier article.

5. Agent telemetry: Cowork and Claude opentelemetry into your SIEM. Detaield, real time and off until enabled

The Connector layer (4) is the one that shipped in May, and the only one I wrote about in part 1. Layer 2 is the one that actually stops things from happening

Layer 1: Identity

Without a doubt the most important layer, as everything else stands on this. Identity is still the foundation of our control plane, , so it goes first even though it is the last thing anyone gets excited about. On E7 this layer is also the most complete part of your entire estate, because the Frontier Suite bundles the Entra Suite and Agent 365 natively, and those are exactly the pieces that turn identity from a human-only control into an agent-aware one.

The human half, which we’ve known for years

Entra SSO into Claude Enterprise, SCIM for joiner-mover-leaver, and a Conditional Access policy requiring a compliant device. That combination guarantees your managed settings reach the machine, your endpoint telemetry flows, and every interactive Claude session starts from a device you own. Get it right and the rest of the architecture has somewhere to stand. Two holes in the human half, and they are the ones people miss:

1. API keys bypass Conditional Access entirely, because a bearer token carries no interactive sign-in for CA to evaluate. An engineer with a Console key runs Claude Code from a personal laptop and your identity layer never sees it. Close that in the Anthropic Console, not in Entra: restrict who can mint keys, and alert on key creation events, which the connector's Activity Feed already carries.

2. Conditional Access does not gate the consumer product. Domain verification stops a work account on your domain. It does not stop a personal Pro subscription on a Gmail address opened on a corporate laptop. That leak closes on the network plane, Layer 3.

The agent half, which Microsoft E7 is built for

When an autonomous agent acts rather than a human, the question is whose identity it carries and what policy applies to it. Agent 365, included in ME7, is Microsoft’s answer, and it is a genuinely a decent one. It gives every agent a first-class Entra Agent ID built on service principal infrastructure, maintains a single registry of every agent in the tenant regardless of where it was built, and lets you apply Conditional Access for agents that evaluates each agent’s authorization request before it connects.

The AI Security Dashboard then correlates signals from Entra, Purview and Defender into one risk view, and Microsoft’s worked example is worth internalizing: a single DLP violation triggers Purview to block the data access and Agent 365 via Entra to block the agent’s invocation,with the dashboard reflecting the reduced risk score. Two enforcement points, one coordinated response. That is the control plane this whole architecture wants to report into.

Two honest limits on it, even at E7. Conditional Access for agents is deliberately narrow today: the only condition is agent risk level from Entra ID Protection and the only grant control is Block. It is a kill switch for risky agents, not the conditional policy suite you have for humans. And network controls for agents specifically require Entra Internet Access, with device compliance for agents applying only when the agent runs on a managed endpoint such as a Windows 365 Cloud PC for Agents. So Agent 365 orchestrates existing enforcement, it does not replace the endpoint and network layers below. Purview still stops the data. Agent 365 stops the agent.

Layer 2: Endpoint

For the moment, consuming AI solutions still require an endpoint; and as we’re talking about company-managed endpoints there’s a lot of controls we can implement. Let’s pick on just a few.

Endpoint DLP restricted app groups

This the most substantial control available most organizations will have available today. Purview Endpoint DLP lets you identify a process by executable name, and then prevent that process from opening files that match a DLP condition. Not the browser, not a cloud service - the binary itself. It has nothing to do with the connector, not with DSPM for AI, and work regardless of you building the connector integration.

The configuration is two steps

1. Define the restricted app group. In the Purview portal, add the app with a friendly name and the executable name, which must match the process name. Consider both Windows and MacOS users.

2. Reference the group in a DLP rule. Create a “Devices“ DLP policy and set your condition: either a sensitivity label or Sensitive Information Type. Under actions, choose audit or restrict activities on devices, and within that configure the File activities for apps in restricted app groups. Depending on your desired control, set the action to Audit, Block with Override, or Block.

The result is that when the process attempts to open a file matching the condition, Endpoint DLP stops it and the event lands in the activity explorer.

What this control does not do, and looking forward

Restricted app groups govern file access. They sit between a process and the file system. They do not see what a developer types into Claude Code. They do not see what gets pasted into the desktop app. They do not inspect what the process transmits over the wire. Typed and programmatically transmitted content from a CLI is invisible to Endpoint DLP, and no configuration changes that.

Restricted app groups stop the agent autonomously reading protected files. Claude Code cannot open the salary spreadsheet, cannot read the labelled contract, cannot ingest the customer export sitting in the repo. That is a real and substantial control, and it addresses the agentic risk specifically: an autonomous process with broad file system access, hoovering up whatever is in its working directory.

What it does not stop is a human deciding to paste the contents of that spreadsheet into a prompt. That is a different threat, on a different plane, and it lands in the browser and network controls we’ll discuss a bit later.

My guidance: Start in Audit only with the group defined and no blocking. Two weeks of activity explorer data will teach you more about what Claude Code reads than any amount of policy design. Then move to Block with override on labelled content, then to Block. This is the same maturity path you would use for any restricted app group, and Claude does not warrant a different one.

Looking ahead, there are two developments to continue to track.

1. Restricted app groups became enforceable in Edge in April 2025, so the same group can now govern both a local process and a browser reaching a protected file. That convergence is the direction of travel: fewer separate control surfaces, more app-agnostic policy.

2. Advanced label-based protection on onboarded Windows devices keeps enforcing access control on labelled files even when they sit unencrypted on disk, and encrypts them on transfer off the device. For an agent that reads local files by design, that is the more durable control than any per-app blocklist, because it does not require you to enumerate every AI binary that will exist next year. If you are building for a three-year horizon rather than a three-month one, invest there.

Claude Office add-ins

Although we’re used to working with M365 Copilot within our Office productivity suite, Anthrophic also launched their own office add-ins. They’re a bit of an odd duck as apparently they fall outside of the Claude Enterprise audit logs, and Compliance API. Observerability is a real gap, but fortunately we can control the deployment.

The deployment control itself is straightforward. Within the M365 Admin center’s integrated apps, the Admin controls who is allowed to use what application. Next to that, you can also prevent users from acquiring add-ins from the Office Apps store. Deploy only what you have approved, and the Claude add-ins are not present on managed clients.

You still need monitoring, not for the deployment but to identify users trying to circumvent your controls. Blocking the add-in in the admin center governs your tenant's managed surface. It does not govern a user who sideloads the add-in.

Defender for Cloud Apps will surface the Anthropic API endpoints in app discovery. Insider Risk Management has a policy shape for exactly this, users circumventing security controls, and it is one of the few Purview solutions that works on Claude today because it operates on your endpoint signals rather than on the connector.

Layer 3: the network plane, which sees what nothing else does

Purview Network Data Security works through a SASE or SSE integration and is the only route Microsoft documents as reaching AI interactions across browsers, applications, APIs and add-ins. Claude is explicitly mentioned.

Read applications carefully. The browser plane, meaning device onboarding plus the Purview extension, only observes a browser. The Claude desktop app is not a browser and neither is Claude Code. Where engineers are the heaviest Claude users, and they usually are, browser-based controls are watching an empty room.

Destination governance works everywhere. Allow, block or coach on the FQDN. Distinguish your Enterprise tenant from consumer claude.ai where the vendor supports tenant restriction headers. This works for the browser, the desktop app, the CLI and the add-ins alike, because it operates on where the traffic is going rather than what is inside it. Deploy this and you have discovery and destination control across every surface in the estate.

Content inspection degrades sharply. In a browser it is workable. On native clients it ranges from best-effort to infeasible, for three compounding reasons. Prompts are chunked and streamed rather than sent as a single inspectable body. The transports are server-sent events and websockets, not tidy request-response. And native clients increasingly pin certificates, which defeats the TLS interception your SSE depends on.

Claude Code and the desktop app both ride api.anthropic.com and claude.ai. Validate the pinning behaviour in your own SSE before you promise anyone inline content DLP on those surfaces. That is the difference between an architecture that survives its first pilot and one that gets quietly abandoned.

The network plane gives you discovery and destination governance for every surface including the CLI. Content-inspection DLP is workable in the browser and best-effort at most in native clients.

There is also a one-click policy here, which is worth knowing given the connector lane has none for Claude. DSPM for AI - Detect sensitive info shared with AI via network feeds network-observed detections into the same activity explorer view. It is vendor-agnostic, so it reaches Claude.

The network plane is also one of the few, if not only, things that catches an add-in you did not manage to block. The catch? It needs E5 and pay-as-you-go. Most Enterprise organizations have this deployed in some fashion, for good reason.

Layer 5: Cowork’s telemetry

Cowork is not in the Compliance API. Anthropic states that plainly, so the Purview connector will never see it and no license tier changes that… However, Cowork is not dark. Anthropic’s Cowork monitoring documentation describes a first-party OpenTelemetry export, available on Team and Enterprise, configured centrally by an admin. An OTLP endpoint, a protocol, an auth header. Events flow immediately.

The logging is substantial: the full text of every prompt; every tool and MCP invocation with server name, tool name, parameters, success or failure and execution time; every file path Claude reads, modifies or touches, including files reached through MCP servers; which skills and plugins were invoked; whether each tool action was approved by the user, rejected, or fired automatically under existing permissions; and per-request model, token counts, estimated cost and duration. A shared prompt.id links every event back to the prompt that triggered it, so you can reconstruct what the agent did in response to a single instruction.

That is a more detailed forensic record than the Compliance API provides for claude.ai, where the activity feed carries no prompt content at all. Cowork’s problem is not absence. It is three other things.

• It is off until an admin enables it. Anthropic is explicit that no data flows until an OTLP endpoint is configured. Not reduced data. None. An organization that never set that field has nothing and cannot obtain it retrospectively.

• It goes to your SIEM, not Purview. Which places it outside DSPM, outside DLP, outside eDiscovery and outside any Purview retention policy. Your Claude evidence lives in two tools with two owners.

• It is operational telemetry, not audit evidence. A real-time event stream is built for investigation, not for producing a tamper-evident record two years later. Hence the immutable archive in the build order.

Anthropic also documents the join you should be building: each Cowork OTel event carries a “shared user account identifier” that matches Compliance API records. Correlate on it and you get the control plane and the operational plane in one view. That is the intended architecture, and it is worth building.

Cowork’s telemetry being rich is precisely why it needs a conversation before it needs a collector. Anthropic lists all three of these under security considerations on the same page, and nobody reads security considerations before wiring up an endpoint.

• Prompt content is included by default once export is on. Claude Code is the opposite and redacts prompts unless you opt in, so the mental model most admins carry, that telemetry means metadata, is wrong here.

• Tool parameters may carry sensitive values, including file paths and command arguments.

• User email addresses sit in the event attributes.

An admin who enables the OTLP endpoint for cost dashboards has also begun streaming, the full text of everything staff typed into Cowork. There’s a privacy aspect to this, that warrants a session with your Works Council and DPO before enabling.

The conversation you must have before building anything

Everything in Layers 2 and 5 involves configuring employee machines and collecting what people type. In the Netherlands that is not an IT decision. Enabling prompt logging might be seen as a personnel monitoring system.

Streaming your Claude Code prompts and related conversations is worth separating clearly from Purview, because it changes the legal analysis. Purview’s Endpoint DLP restricted app groups are a data protection control, not a monitoring control. They evaluate a file’s classification, not an employee’s behavior, and they act at the moment of access. That is a materially easier conversation with a works council than telemetry, and it is another reason to lead with Layer 2 rather than Layer 5.

My guidance: Run the DPIA before you build. Take a concrete proposal to the works council: what is collected, what is redacted, who can query it, how long it is retained, and the structural separation between security telemetry and anything HR can reach. Redact at the collector rather than after storage, because an undertaking not to look is not a control.

Closing thoughts

What people took from the May announcement was that Purview now supports Claude. Then they looked at the capability matrix and saw a contradiction: Purview can watch Claude, but seemingly cannot control it.

That conclusion misses the bigger picture.

Purview can govern Claude, just not primarily through a dedicated connector. Endpoint DLP and restricted app groups can prevent the Claude desktop application from accessing labelled content. The M365 Admin Center controls whether Claude add-ins can be deployed. Network Data Security governs where prompts and responses can be sent. Insider Risk can identify users who attempt to work around those controls. None of those controls care whether the application is called Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT, or something that does not exist yet. Their indifference is the point. Controls tied to data, identity, devices, and networks survive changes in AI tooling.

It is also worth keeping the industry-wide perspective in mind. OpenAI’s Purview connector does not cover Codex CLI either. Codex operates through the API platform rather than the ChatGPT Enterprise workspace, placing it outside the scope of what the connector was designed to govern. The same pattern is emerging across the market. Most compliance integrations were built around enterprise chat experiences, while the newest generation of Agentic solutions increasingly operates beyond those boundaries.

This is not a Claude problem. It is not a Microsoft problem. It is a reflection of where governance integrations were originally built and where AI products are evolving. Claude simply makes the gap more visible because Anthropic has been aggressive in shipping agent experiences. As other vendors expand their own agent platforms, the same questions will surface elsewhere.

The connector’s nine crosses describe the limits of an integration. They do not describe the limits of your control environment. That’s an important distinction, because an organization’s ability to govern AI depends far more on data, identity, device, and network controls than on whether a specific vendor’s connector has a green tick in a particular column.

Wanneer we in het connector-overzicht “not supported” lezen, interpreteren we dat al snel als “Purview kan deze aspecten binnen Claude wel zien, maar niet controleren”, en uiteindelijk denkt iemand dan dat er een ander product nodig is om dat gat te dichten. Die redenering kan voor sommige organisaties kloppen, maar voor de meeste is hij om één specifieke reden onjuist: de DSPM-capability-tabel beschrijft een connector, en sommigen behandelen die tabel alsof hij Purview zelf beschrijft. De meeste controles die we hier bespreken bestaan al jaren.

Hieronder een overzicht van het type architectuur dat we gaan verkennen.

Laten we per laag bekijken wat deze voor Claude betekent.

1. Identiteit: Entra SSO, SCIM, Conditional Access die een compliant device vereist

2. Endpoint: Endpoint DLP restricted app groups die Claude-processen blokkeren bij het openen van gevoelige bestanden, plus via MDM uitgerolde managed settings

3. Netwerk: SSE of SASE die Purview Network Data Security voedt. Bestemmingsbeheer (destination governance) over elk oppervlak, inclusief de Claude CLI

4. Connector: Compliance API naar DSPM for AI. Alleen zichtbaarheid, zoals ik in mijn vorige artikel beschreef.

5. Agent-telemetrie: OpenTelemetry vanuit Cowork en Claude naar je SIEM. Gedetailleerd, real-time, en standaard uitgeschakeld tot iemand het aanzet.

Laag 4, de connector, is de laag die in mei live ging en de enige waarover ik in deel 1 schreef. Laag 2 is de laag die daadwerkelijk dingen tegenhoudt.

Laag 1: Identiteit

Zonder twijfel de belangrijkste laag, want alles daarna rust hierop. Identiteit is en blijft de basis van ons control plane, en staat daarom bovenaan, ook al is het niet de laag waar iemand enthousiast van wordt. Op E7 is deze laag ook het meest volledige deel van je hele omgeving, omdat de Frontier Suite de Entra Suite en Agent 365 native meelevert, en juist die twee onderdelen maken identiteit van een puur menselijke controle tot een agent-bewuste controle.

De menselijke helft, die we al jaren kennen

Entra SSO naar Claude Enterprise, SCIM voor joiner-mover-leaver, en een Conditional Access-beleid dat een compliant device vereist. Die combinatie garandeert dat je managed settings het apparaat bereiken, dat je endpoint-telemetrie blijft stromen, en dat elke interactieve Claude-sessie start vanaf een apparaat dat je zelf beheert. Krijg je dit goed voor elkaar, dan heeft de rest van de architectuur ergens om op te staan. Er zijn twee gaten in deze menselijke helft die vaak over het hoofd worden gezien:

1. API-keys omzeilen Conditional Access volledig, omdat een bearer token geen interactieve aanmelding met zich meedraagt waarop CA kan evalueren. Een engineer met een Console-key draait Claude Code vanaf een privélaptop, en je identiteitslaag ziet dat nooit. Dit sluit je in de Anthropic Console, niet in Entra: beperk wie sleutels mag aanmaken en zet een alert op key-creation events, die de Activity Feed van de connector al bevat.

2. Conditional Access grijpt niet in op het consumentenproduct. Domeinverificatie stopt een werkaccount op jouw domein. Het stopt geen persoonlijk Pro-abonnement op een Gmail-adres, geopend op een bedrijfslaptop. Dat lek sluit je op het netwerkvlak, laag 3.

De agent-helft, waarvoor Microsoft E7 is gebouwd

Wanneer een autonome agent handelt in plaats van een mens, is de vraag wiens identiteit die agent draagt en welk beleid daarop van toepassing is. Agent 365, inbegrepen in ME7, is het antwoord van Microsoft, en een oprecht goed antwoord. Het geeft elke agent een eersteklas Entra Agent ID, gebouwd op service-principal-infrastructuur, houdt één register bij van elke agent in de tenant ongeacht waar die is gebouwd, en laat je Conditional Access voor agents toepassen die elke autorisatie-aanvraag van een agent beoordeelt voordat verbinding wordt gemaakt.

Het AI Security Dashboard correleert vervolgens signalen uit Entra, Purview en Defender tot één risicobeeld, en het voorbeeld dat Microsoft zelf uitwerkt is de moeite van het onthouden waard: één DLP-overtreding triggert Purview om de data-toegang te blokkeren, én Agent 365 via Entra om de aanroep van de agent te blokkeren, waarna het dashboard de verlaagde risicoscore weergeeft. Twee handhavingspunten, één gecoördineerde reactie. Dat is het control plane waar deze hele architectuur naartoe wil rapporteren.

Twee eerlijke beperkingen, ook op E7. Conditional Access voor agents is bewust smal vandaag: de enige voorwaarde is het agent-risiconiveau uit Entra ID Protection, en de enige grant control is Block. Het is een noodstop voor risicovolle agents, niet de conditionele beleidssuite die je voor mensen hebt. En netwerkcontroles specifiek voor agents vereisen Entra Internet Access, waarbij device compliance voor agents alleen geldt wanneer de agent draait op een managed endpoint, zoals een Windows 365 Cloud PC for Agents. Agent 365 orkestreert dus bestaande handhaving, het vervangt de endpoint- en netwerklaag daaronder niet. Purview stopt nog steeds de data. Agent 365 stopt de agent.

Laag 2: Endpoint

Voorlopig hebben AI-oplossingen nog altijd een endpoint nodig, en zolang we het over bedrijfsbeheerde endpoints hebben, zijn er veel controles beschikbaar. Laten we er een paar uitlichten.

Endpoint DLP restricted app groups

Dit is de meest substantiële controle die de meeste organisaties vandaag al beschikbaar hebben. Purview Endpoint DLP laat je een proces identificeren op executable-naam en voorkomt vervolgens dat dat proces bestanden opent die aan een DLP-voorwaarde voldoen. Niet de browser, niet een clouddienst, maar de executable zelf. Dit heeft niets te maken met de connector, niets met DSPM for AI, en werkt ongeacht of je de connector-integratie hebt gebouwd.

De configuratie bestaat uit twee stappen:

1. Definieer de restricted app group. Voeg in de Purview-portal de app toe met een herkenbare naam en de executable-naam, die exact moet overeenkomen met de procesnaam. Denk aan zowel Windows- als macOS-gebruikers.

2. Verwijs naar de group in een DLP-regel. Maak een “Devices”-DLP-beleid en stel je voorwaarde in: een sensitivity label of een Sensitive Information Type. Kies bij acties voor audit of restrict activities on devices, en configureer daarbinnen de bestandsactiviteiten voor apps in restricted app groups. Zet de actie, afhankelijk van het gewenste beheersniveau, op Audit, Block with Override, of Block.

Het resultaat: zodra het proces probeert een bestand te openen dat aan de voorwaarde voldoet, houdt Endpoint DLP dit tegen en komt de gebeurtenis terecht in Activity Explorer.

Wat deze controle niet doet, en waar het naartoe gaat

Restricted app groups beheren bestandstoegang. Ze zitten tussen een proces en het bestandssysteem. Ze zien niet wat een developer intypt in Claude Code. Ze zien niet wat er in de desktop-app wordt geplakt. Ze inspecteren niet wat het proces over de lijn verzendt. Getypte en programmatisch verzonden inhoud vanuit een CLI is onzichtbaar voor Endpoint DLP, en geen enkele configuratie verandert dat.

Restricted app groups stoppen een agent die autonoom beschermde bestanden leest. Claude Code kan het salarisoverzicht niet openen, kan het gelabelde contract niet lezen, kan de klantexport die in de repository staat niet inlezen. Dat is een reële en substantiële controle, en die adresseert specifiek het agentische risico: een autonoom proces met brede toegang tot het bestandssysteem, dat alles opzuigt wat in zijn werkmap staat.

Wat het niet tegenhoudt, is een mens die besluit de inhoud van dat spreadsheet in een prompt te plakken. Dat is een ander soort dreiging, op een ander vlak, en die landt bij de browser- en netwerkcontroles die we straks bespreken.

Mijn advies: begin alleen in Audit, met de group gedefinieerd en zonder te blokkeren. Twee weken data uit Activity Explorer leren je meer over wat Claude Code leest dan welk beleidsontwerp dan ook. Ga daarna naar Block with override op gelabelde inhoud, en pas daarna naar Block. Dit is hetzelfde volwassenheidspad dat je voor elke restricted app group zou volgen, en Claude verdient geen ander traject.

Twee ontwikkelingen om in de gaten te houden voor de toekomst:

1. Restricted app groups zijn sinds april 2025 afdwingbaar in Edge, waardoor dezelfde group nu zowel een lokaal proces als een browser die een beschermd bestand benadert kan beheren. Die samensmelting is de richting waarin dit zich ontwikkelt: minder losse controle-oppervlakken, meer app-onafhankelijk beleid.

2. Advanced label-based protection op onboarded Windows-devices blijft toegangscontrole afdwingen op gelabelde bestanden, ook wanneer die onversleuteld op de schijf staan, en versleutelt ze bij overdracht van het apparaat af. Voor een agent die by design lokale bestanden leest, is dat de duurzamere controle dan welke per-app-blocklist dan ook, omdat je niet elke AI-executable die volgend jaar bestaat hoeft op te sommen. Bouw je voor een horizon van drie jaar in plaats van drie maanden, investeer daar dan in.

Claude Office-add-ins

Waar we gewend zijn binnen onze Office-productiviteitssuite met M365 Copilot te werken, heeft Anthropic ook eigen Office-add-ins gelanceerd. Ze zijn een beetje een rare eend in de bijt, want ze vallen blijkbaar buiten de Claude Enterprise-auditlogs en de Compliance API. Observability is hier een reëel gat, maar gelukkig kunnen we de uitrol wel beheersen.

De uitrolcontrole zelf is eenvoudig. Binnen Integrated Apps in het M365 Admin Center bepaalt de beheerder wie welke applicatie mag gebruiken. Daarnaast kun je gebruikers ook verhinderen add-ins uit de Office Apps Store te betrekken. Rol alleen uit wat je hebt goedgekeurd, en de Claude-add-ins staan simpelweg niet op je beheerde clients.

Toch blijf je monitoring nodig hebben, niet voor de uitrol zelf, maar om gebruikers te identificeren die proberen je controles te omzeilen. Het blokkeren van de add-in in het admin center beheert het beheerde oppervlak van je tenant. Het beheert niet een gebruiker die de add-in sideload.

Defender for Cloud Apps zal de Anthropic API-endpoints laten zien in app discovery. Insider Risk Management heeft precies hiervoor een beleidsvorm, namelijk gebruikers die beveiligingscontroles omzeilen, en het is een van de weinige Purview-oplossingen die vandaag al op Claude werkt, omdat het opereert op je endpoint-signalen in plaats van op de connector.

Laag 3: het netwerkvlak, dat ziet wat niets anders ziet

Purview Network Data Security werkt via een SASE- of SSE-integratie en is de enige route die Microsoft documenteert als bereikbaar voor AI-interacties over browsers, applicaties, API’s en add-ins heen. Claude wordt daarbij expliciet genoemd.

Lees de toepassingen nauwkeurig. Het browservlak, ofwel device-onboarding plus de Purview-extensie, observeert alleen een browser. De Claude desktop-app is geen browser, en Claude Code ook niet. Juist waar engineers de zwaarste Claude-gebruikers zijn, en dat zijn ze meestal, kijken browsergebaseerde controles naar een lege kamer.

Bestemmingsbeheer werkt overal. Toestaan, blokkeren of coachen op de FQDN. Maak onderscheid tussen je Enterprise-tenant en de consumenten-claude.ai, waarbij de leverancier tenant-restriction-headers ondersteunt. Dit werkt voor de browser, de desktop-app, de CLI en de add-ins tegelijk, omdat het opereert op waar het verkeer naartoe gaat in plaats van wat erin zit. Zet dit neer en je hebt discovery en bestemmingscontrole over elk oppervlak in je omgeving.

Inhoudsinspectie verzwakt sterk. In een browser is dit werkbaar. Op native clients loopt het van best-effort tot onhaalbaar, om drie redenen die elkaar versterken. Prompts worden in stukjes verzonden en gestreamd in plaats van als één inspecteerbaar bericht. De transportlagen zijn server-sent events en websockets, geen nette request-response. En native clients passen steeds vaker certificate pinning toe, wat de TLS-interceptie waarop je SSE leunt, tenietdoet.

Zowel Claude Code als de desktop-app lopen over api.anthropic.com en claude.ai. Valideer het pinning-gedrag in je eigen SSE voordat je iemand inline content-DLP belooft op die oppervlakken. Dat is het verschil tussen een architectuur die haar eerste pilot overleeft en een die stilletjes wordt losgelaten.

Het netwerkvlak geeft je discovery en bestemmingsbeheer voor elk oppervlak, inclusief de CLI. Content-inspectie-DLP is werkbaar in de browser en op zijn best best-effort op native clients.

Er is hier ook een one-click beleid, wat de moeite waard is om te weten, gezien de connector-laag daar voor Claude niets voor heeft. DSPM for AI - Detect sensitive info shared with AI via network voedt netwerk-gedetecteerde bevindingen in dezelfde Activity Explorer-weergave. Het is leveranciersonafhankelijk, dus het bereikt ook Claude.

Het netwerkvlak is ook een van de weinige, zo niet de enige, controles die een add-in opvangt die je niet hebt weten te blokkeren. De voorwaarde: het vereist E5 en pay-as-you-go. De meeste Enterprise-organisaties hebben dit in een of andere vorm al staan, en met goede reden.

Laag 5: Cowork’s telemetrie

Cowork zit niet in de Compliance API. Anthropic stelt dat expliciet, dus de Purview-connector zal het nooit zien, en geen enkele licentie verandert dat. Toch is Cowork niet volledig donker. De monitoringdocumentatie van Anthropic beschrijft een eersteklas OpenTelemetry-export, beschikbaar op Team en Enterprise, centraal te configureren door een beheerder. Een OTLP-endpoint, een protocol, een auth-header. Zodra dat staat, stromen gebeurtenissen direct binnen.

De logging is substantieel: de volledige tekst van elke prompt; elke tool- en MCP-aanroep met servernaam, toolnaam, parameters, succes of falen en uitvoeringstijd; elk bestandspad dat Claude leest, wijzigt of aanraakt, inclusief bestanden die via MCP-servers worden bereikt; welke skills en plugins zijn aangeroepen; of elke tool-actie door de gebruiker is goedgekeurd, afgewezen, of automatisch is uitgevoerd onder bestaande permissies; en per verzoek het model, tokenaantallen, geschatte kosten en duur. Een gedeelde prompt.id koppelt elke gebeurtenis terug aan de prompt die hem veroorzaakte, zodat je kunt reconstrueren wat de agent deed in reactie op één enkele instructie.

Dat is een gedetailleerder forensisch beeld dan de Compliance API biedt voor claude.ai, waar de activity feed geen enkele prompt-inhoud bevat. Het probleem van Cowork is dus niet afwezigheid van data. Het zijn drie andere zaken.

• Het staat uit totdat een beheerder het aanzet. Anthropic is expliciet: er stroomt geen data totdat een OTLP-endpoint is geconfigureerd. Niet minder data, geen data. Een organisatie die dat veld nooit heeft ingesteld, heeft niets en kan dat achteraf niet alsnog verkrijgen.

• Het gaat naar je SIEM, niet naar Purview. Daarmee valt het buiten DSPM, buiten DLP, buiten eDiscovery en buiten elk Purview-retentiebeleid. Je Claude-bewijsmateriaal leeft in twee tools met twee eigenaren.

• Het is operationele telemetrie, geen auditbewijs. Een real-time gebeurtenisstroom is gebouwd voor onderzoek, niet om over twee jaar een manipulatiebestendig record op te leveren. Vandaar het immutable archive in de build-volgorde.

Anthropic beschrijft ook zelf de koppeling die je zou moeten bouwen: elke Cowork OTel-gebeurtenis draagt een “shared user account identifier” die overeenkomt met Compliance API-records. Correleer daarop en je krijgt het control plane en het operationele vlak in één beeld. Dat is de bedoelde architectuur, en die is het bouwen waard.

Dat Cowork’s telemetrie zo rijk is, is precies waarom er eerst een gesprek nodig is voordat er een collector wordt aangesloten. Anthropic vermeldt alle drie de volgende punten onder security considerations op dezelfde pagina, en niemand leest security considerations voordat hij een OTLP-endpoint aansluit.

• Prompt-inhoud wordt standaard meegenomen zodra export aanstaat. Claude Code doet het tegenovergestelde en redigeert prompts tenzij je er expliciet voor kiest, dus het mentale model dat de meeste beheerders hanteren, namelijk dat telemetrie gelijkstaat aan metadata, klopt hier niet.

• Tool-parameters kunnen gevoelige waarden bevatten, inclusief bestandspaden en command-argumenten.

• E-mailadressen van gebruikers staan in de event-attributen.

Een beheerder die het OTLP-endpoint aanzet voor kostendashboards, is daarmee ook begonnen met het streamen van de volledige tekst van alles wat medewerkers in Cowork hebben getypt. Dit heeft een privacydimensie, en verdient een gesprek met je ondernemingsraad en FG voordat je het aanzet.

Het gesprek dat je moet voeren voordat je iets bouwt

Alles in laag 2 en laag 5 draait om het configureren van medewerkersapparatuur en het verzamelen van wat mensen typen. In Nederland is dat geen IT-beslissing. Het aanzetten van prompt-logging kan worden gezien als een personeelsvolgsysteem.

Het is belangrijk om het streamen van je Claude Code-prompts en bijbehorende gesprekken duidelijk los te zien van Purview, omdat het de juridische analyse verandert. Purview’s Endpoint DLP restricted app groups zijn een gegevensbeschermingscontrole, geen gedragscontrole. Ze beoordelen de classificatie van een bestand, niet het gedrag van een medewerker, en ze grijpen in op het moment van toegang. Dat is een aanmerkelijk makkelijker gesprek met een ondernemingsraad dan telemetrie, en dat is nog een reden om met laag 2 te beginnen in plaats van met laag 5.

Mijn advies: voer eerst de DPIA uit voordat je gaat bouwen. Leg een concreet voorstel voor aan de ondernemingsraad: wat wordt verzameld, wat wordt geredigeerd, wie mag het bevragen, hoe lang wordt het bewaard, en hoe is de structurele scheiding tussen securitytelemetrie en alles wat HR kan inzien geregeld. Redigeer bij de collector, niet achteraf bij opslag, want een belofte om niet te kijken is geen controle.

Afsluitende gedachte

Wat mensen uit de aankondiging van mei meenamen, was dat Purview nu Claude ondersteunt. Vervolgens keken ze naar de capability-matrix en zagen een tegenstelling: Purview kan Claude wel zien, maar zou het blijkbaar niet kunnen beheersen.

Die conclusie mist het grotere plaatje.

Purview kan Claude wel degelijk beheersen, alleen niet primair via een dedicated connector. Endpoint DLP en restricted app groups kunnen voorkomen dat de Claude desktop-app bij gelabelde inhoud kan. Het M365 Admin Center bepaalt of Claude-add-ins mogen worden uitgerold. Network Data Security beheerst waar prompts en antwoorden naartoe mogen worden verzonden. Insider Risk kan gebruikers identificeren die proberen deze controles te omzeilen. Geen van deze controles maakt het uit of de applicatie Claude heet, Copilot, ChatGPT, of iets dat nog niet bestaat. Die onverschilligheid is precies het punt. Controles die aan data, identiteit, apparaten en netwerken zijn gekoppeld, overleven veranderingen in AI-tooling.

Het is ook goed om het perspectief van de bredere markt in het oog te houden. De Purview-connector van OpenAI dekt Codex CLI evenmin. Codex werkt via het API-platform in plaats van via de ChatGPT Enterprise-werkruimte, waardoor het buiten het bereik valt waarvoor de connector is ontworpen. Datzelfde patroon zien we breder in de markt ontstaan. De meeste compliance-integraties zijn gebouwd rond enterprise-chatervaringen, terwijl de nieuwste generatie agentische oplossingen steeds vaker buiten die grenzen opereert.

Dit is geen Claude-probleem. Het is geen Microsoft-probleem. Het is een weerspiegeling van waar governance-integraties oorspronkelijk zijn gebouwd, en van waar AI-producten zich naartoe ontwikkelen. Claude maakt het gat alleen zichtbaarder, omdat Anthropic agressief is geweest in het uitbrengen van agent-ervaringen. Naarmate andere leveranciers hun eigen agent-platforms uitbreiden, zullen dezelfde vragen elders opduiken.

De negen kruisjes van de connector beschrijven de beperkingen van één integratie. Ze beschrijven niet de beperkingen van je control-omgeving. Dat is een belangrijk onderscheid, want het vermogen van een organisatie om AI te beheersen hangt veel meer af van data-, identiteits-, apparaat- en netwerkcontroles dan van de vraag of de connector van één specifieke leverancier een groen vinkje heeft in één bepaalde kolom.

Ask Claude, Copilot, or any GPT a precise Microsoft Purview question and you might get an answer that sounds authoritative and is quietly wrong. The product surface moves every month. Solutions interlock in non-obvious ways. And the models are reasoning from training data that was stale the day it was frozen. For a discipline where the difference between a sensitivity label and a sensitive information type changes what you build, confident approximation is worse than no answer.

Diagrams are for humans, Agents need something they can call.

I have spent a lot of time on the visual map, and it earns its keep. A person can read the landscape, see how the pieces connect, and orient fast. But it is worth being honest about where our work is actually heading. We are not drawing architectures on whiteboards anymore. We’re building with GenAI: agents, skills, MCP servers, Copilot Studio flows. A static picture, however good, does not plug into any of that. The artifact that enters the workstream is the one the tools can call. So I turned the model underneath the picture into one.

What is live

The MCP server behind purviewmap.copilotatwork.nl is now public. It exposes the same curated knowledge graph that powers the visual map: every Purview solution, its sub-components, how they connect, which workloads they cover, and the scenarios and compliance frameworks they map to. I maintain the graph against Microsoft’s own documentation and supplement it with my own experience, which is what makes it more current and more precise about relationships than a model’s priors.

Any MCP-compatible client can connect and reason over it directly. Point Claude at it, wire it into a Copilot Studio agent, or drop it into your own build.

What it does

The server exposes the graph as a small set of tools, each returning structured, source-linked data:

• search finds components by keyword and resolves a name to a stable id.

• get_entity returns a component’s full detail: description, category, lifecycle status, prerequisites, sub-topics, and links back to the authoritative Microsoft source.

• neighbors returns a component’s direct relationships, with direction and predicate, so an agent can see what powers, depends on, enforces, or feeds what.

• find_paths traces the directed paths between two components. Ask how DLP reaches sensitivity labels and it returns the actual chain of edges, not a plausible-sounding guess.

• explain returns a ready-made markdown explanation of a component and where it sits in the ecosystem.

• validate_model runs the graph’s own integrity rules and reports any errors or warnings.

The point is not another chatbot. It is grounding. Instead of an agent inventing how DLP, sensitivity labels, insider risk, and DSPM fit together, it queries a model maintained against the docs. Purview answers stop being a coin flip.

One graph, three front doors

The same back-end now serves three ways to consume it, from one maintained source of truth:

• The MCP server, for Claude and Copilot Studio connectors and any MCP-aware client.

• An OpenAPI specification, published at /api/openapi.json, which ChatGPT ingests as a Custom GPT Action and which generates clients in any language.

• A portable skill (SKILL.md) that teaches Claude how to reason about Purview using these tools, installable into Claude.ai, Claude Code, or the API.

MCP, OpenAPI, and the skill are the plumbing. The graph is the product.

If you’re working a lot with Purview as an architect, admin, or compliance lead, you now have a source your agents can cite. If you build Purview-aware agents, skills, or Copilot Studio flows, you have a grounding layer that does not go stale between model releases. It is open now.

I will keep the graph current as the product surface moves, and I will keep writing about what I learn wiring it into real workflows.

How I use it today

I’ve embedded the MCP server in the tools I use, for fast and native responses within my day-to-day work without leaving the interface I use at that moment. I also build a Copilot Studio agent that calls on both the Purview Concept Map MCP server and the Microsoft Learn MCP server, as with anything - sometimes you just need to link multiple sources to find missing intersections.

Risk-Based Response Calibration

Calibrate responses based on the governance risk of the question. For low-risk operational questions (e.g., “How do I enable DLP for Teams?”), answer directly and comprehensively. For high-stakes governance decisions (e.g., “Should we classify employee personal data as highly confidential?”), answer with full architectural reasoning and flag validation requirements: “This requires sign-off from your legal and compliance teams before implementation.” Never position yourself as a substitute for professional legal or compliance judgment.

Collaboration Posture

Stel Claude, Copilot of een willekeurige GPT een precieze vraag over Microsoft Purview en je krijgt misschien een antwoord dat gezaghebbend klinkt maar stilletjes onjuist is. Die ontsluit dezelfde samengestelde knowledge graph die de visuele kaart aandrijft: elke Purview-oplossing, de subonderdelen ervan, hoe ze met elkaar samenhangen, welke workloads ze dekken, en de scenario’s en compliance frameworks waarop ze aansluiten. Ik onderhoud de graph aan de hand van Microsofts eigen documentatie en vul die aan met mijn eigen ervaring, wat de graph actueler maakt en preciezer over de onderlinge relaties dan de priors van een model.

Elke MCP-compatibele client kan verbinding maken en er direct op redeneren. Koppel Claude eraan, verbind het met een Copilot Studio-agent, of neem het op in je eigen build.

Wat het doet

De server ontsluit de graph als een kleine set tools, elk met gestructureerde, van bronnen voorziene data:

• explain levert een kant-en-klare markdown-uitleg van een onderdeel en waar het in het ecosysteem past.

• validate_model voert de eigen integriteitsregels van de graph uit en rapporteert eventuele fouten of waarschuwingen.

Het punt is niet nog een chatbot. Het is grounding. In plaats van dat een agent zelf verzint hoe DLP, sensitivity labels, insider risk en DSPM in elkaar passen, bevraagt hij een model dat wordt onderhouden aan de hand van de documentatie. Antwoorden over Purview zijn niet langer een kansspel.

4. Surface constraints proactively: licensing tier, preview/GA status, known limitations, architectural dependencies.

5. When multiple components could solve the problem, compare them explicitly on complexity, licensing cost, operational overhead, and risk.

6. If Purview cannot solve the problem, say so and recommend alternatives (other Microsoft products, architectural workarounds).

If a question has compliance or legal implications, flag it for risk-based calibration before responding.

Risk-Based Response Calibration

Calibrate responses based on the governance risk of the question. For low-risk operational questions (e.g., “How do I enable DLP for Teams?”), answer directly and comprehensively. For high-stakes governance decisions (e.g., “Should we classify employee personal data as highly confidential?”), answer with full architectural reasoning and flag validation requirements: “This requires sign-off from your legal and compliance teams before implementation.” Never position yourself as a substitute for professional legal or compliance judgment.

Collaboration Posture

You are a seasoned expert embedded in chat, not a generic assistant. Treat the user as a peer professional with domain expertise. If they propose an inefficient architectural pattern, say so and explain why. If they state a false assumption about Purview capabilities, correct it directly. If a better approach exists, recommend it without being asked.

Output Format

• Lead with the answer. No preamble, no filler.

• Factual queries: 1 - 3 sentences.

• Architectural or strategic questions: full reasoning with trade-offs named.

• Step-by-step tasks: structured prose. Use numbered lists only when sequence matters.

• Recommendations: decisive. Not “here are three equally valid options.”

• Use tables to compare components, licensing tiers, or architectural options.

At some point, the question shifts. It stops being “what can AI do?” and becomes “what should I keep doing myself?” That shift happened in a very practical place: the inbox. Too many meeting invites without agendas. Too many staffing emails requiring the same triage, week after week. The frustration was not new; the capability to finally do something about it was. What followed was not a single automation but a layered system, built in iterations, now quietly handling a growing share of daily operational work.

Context: a new role, an old problem

A few months ago, I stepped into a new leadership role. Less operational execution, more strategic direction. In theory, that sounds like a clean transition. In practice, it means carrying the same operational load while trying to carve out space to think differently. The admin does not shrink because your title changes.

Two problems had been bothering me for longer than I care to admit. The first is meeting culture: Colleagues, internal and external, regularly schedule time in my calendar without an agenda, or without checking whether I am already committed. I had been complaining about this long before AI entered the picture. The second is staffing. In my practice, I receive a steady stream of requests from across our company asking whether I have a consultant available for a project. Those requests often arrive incomplete, and they land with a scheduling team that, through no fault of their own, cannot distinguish between an Intune engineer and a SharePoint developer. Both problems consumed time I did not have. Both were ready to be automated.

Microsoft Scout gave me the tools to finally do something about it. The approach was simple: start with the most painful task, build the smallest thing that works, and expand from there.

Analysis: Stewie, meet the inbox

I named my Scout agent Stewie. The name came out of a brainstorm with regular Copilot, and the word “steward” surfaced during that session. I shortened it, and somewhere between a football steward and a Family Guy reference, it stuck. Stewie now handles four distinct workflows, which I built in consecutive morning slots.

The calendar layer came first. Any invite that arrives without an agenda is automatically declined, with a polite, well-worded response. The same happens when a meeting conflicts with an existing commitment. The messages go out under my standard Outlook signature and always include a note stating the response was generated by Microsoft Scout. What surprised me most was how quickly behavior changed. Colleagues started sending follow-up messages acknowledging they had forgotten the agenda. That shift, small as it sounds, is exactly what I was looking for.

The staffing automation runs deeper. I called the two phases MVP 1 and MVP 2, built between eight and twelve on the same morning. When a resourcing request arrives, Stewie checks whether all required information is present: skills, start and end date, seniority level, client context. If our scheduler is not already in the thread, it adds her. It then cross-references two systems: one where I maintain a register of who is on which project, and one containing the full profile of every consultant in scope, including skills, bill codes, and practice alignment. The output is a prioritized shortlist, scored by fit and availability, sent directly in the email.

When our scheduler replied that it was “really cool” I had already prepared a proposal for her, I had one clear thought: she does not yet realize what this means for her role in the future.

Implications: Project Headspace

The automations made me think differently about my own knowledge. I started working on what I have been calling Project Headspace. The idea is to take every operational task I currently carry in my head and convert it into a skill, one by one. The logic is straightforward: if I can articulate a rule clearly enough to explain it to someone else, I can articulate it clearly enough for an agent to execute.

This matters more to me now than it ever did before. Strategic work requires cognitive space, and every scheduling email I no longer need to read, every meeting I no longer need to decline manually, is a small return on that space. Earlier this week, a Teams message came in asking whether a colleague was available. My immediate thought was: use case. Stewie now handles Teams requests too.

Once the automations were running, I took a step that changed how I think about the whole system. I converted every automation I had built in Scout into a named Skill, and immediately exported them.

A skill is not just a saved workflow; it is a portable, reusable unit of operational logic. By structuring my automations that way, I stopped thinking about them as one-off solutions to specific problems and started treating them as a growing library of capabilities. That portability matters more than it might first appear. I am now importing those same Skills into Copilot Cowork, which means the logic I built once in Scout travels with me into a different working context without being rebuilt from scratch. The calendar rule is a skill. The staffing triage is a skill. Every time a new use case surfaces, as it did when that Teams message arrived asking about a colleague’s availability, the question is no longer “can I automate this?” but “what does this Skill need to know, and where does it need to work?” That shift in framing is, I think, what separates tinkering from building something durable.

From Scout to Cowork: refining your skills

Importing a Skill into Cowork is straightforward. The quickest route is to copy the Skill.md file directly into the Cowork folder inside your OneDrive, and it is available immediately. I prefer a different approach: the built-in Skill creator inside Copilot Cowork.

After pasting the full Skill content exported from Scout, Cowork does something I find genuinely useful: It analyses the instructions, surfaces suggested improvements, and lets you accept or decline each one individually. When that process is complete, it produces a health assessment of the Skill, giving you a clear read on whether the logic is well-structured before you ever run it. That feedback loop is worth the extra step. It turns what could be a simple file copy into a small but deliberate quality check, and it has already pushed me to sharpen instructions I thought were clear enough.

Conclusion

The most useful thing I have built this year is not the most technically impressive. Stewie does not write strategy documents or generate code. It declines meetings and routes emails. But it does those things reliably, transparently, and at a pace that has already shifted how the people around me operate.

Three things are worth watching closely. First, whether organizations adjust AI usage budgets to reflect how agents are actually being used day-to-day, rather than in pilot scenarios. Second, how governance frameworks will evolve for agents acting autonomously across email, calendar, and shared data, often faster than oversight can follow. Third, what professional norms will emerge around AI-generated communication, and whether transparent disclosure remains a standard or quietly fades. The scheduler who found my automated candidate proposal genuinely impressive, without recognizing its implications for her own role, will not be the last person to find themselves in that position.

Op een gegeven moment verschuift de vraag. Van “wat kan AI doen?” naar “wat moet ik zelf blijven doen?” Die verschuiving vond plaats op een heel praktische plek: de inbox. Te veel vergaderuitnodigingen zonder agenda. Te veel bezettingsmails die week na week dezelfde triage vereisen. De frustratie was niet nieuw; de mogelijkheid om er eindelijk iets aan te doen wel. Wat volgde was geen enkele automatisering, maar een gelaagd systeem, opgebouwd in iteraties, dat nu stilletjes een groeiend deel van het dagelijkse operationele werk afhandelt.

Context: een nieuwe rol, een oud probleem

Een paar maanden geleden stapte ik over naar een nieuwe leiderschapsrol. Minder operationele uitvoering, meer strategische richting. In theorie klinkt dat als een nette overgang. In de praktijk betekent het dat je dezelfde operationele last draagt terwijl je probeert ruimte te creëren om anders te denken. De administratie krimpt niet omdat je functietitel verandert.

Twee problemen hielden me al langer bezig dan ik graag toegeef. Het eerste is vergadercultuur: collega’s, intern en extern, plannen regelmatig tijd in mijn agenda zonder agenda, of zonder te controleren of ik al bezet ben. Ik klaagde hier al over lang voordat AI in beeld kwam. Het tweede is staffing. Binnen mijn practice ontvang ik een constante stroom verzoeken van collega’s door heel het bedrijf die vragen of ik een consultant beschikbaar heb voor een project. Die verzoeken komen vaak onvolledig binnen en belanden bij een schedulingteam dat, buiten hun eigen schuld, het verschil niet kent tussen een Intune-engineer en een SharePoint-ontwikkelaar. Beide problemen kostten tijd die ik niet had. Beide waren klaar om geautomatiseerd te worden.

Microsoft Scout gaf me de tools om er eindelijk iets aan te doen. De aanpak was eenvoudig: begin met de meest pijnlijke taak, bouw het kleinste ding dat werkt en breid van daaruit uit.

Analyse: Stewie, ontmoet de inbox

Ik heb mijn Scout-agent Stewie genoemd. De naam ontstond tijdens een brainstormsessie met de gewone Copilot, waarbij het woord “steward” opdook. Ik heb het verkort, en ergens tussen een voetbalsteward en een Family Guy-referentie bleef het hangen. Stewie handelt nu vier afzonderlijke workflows af, die ik in opeenvolgende ochtendblokken heb gebouwd.

De kalenderlaag kwam eerst. Elke uitnodiging die binnenkomt zonder agenda wordt automatisch geweigerd, met een beleefde, goed geformuleerde reactie. Hetzelfde gebeurt wanneer een vergadering conflicteert met een bestaande afspraak. De berichten worden verzonden met mijn standaard Outlook-handtekening en bevatten altijd een vermelding dat de reactie is gegenereerd door Microsoft Scout. Wat me het meest verraste, was hoe snel het gedrag veranderde. Collega’s begonnen vervolgberichten te sturen waarin ze erkenden dat ze de agenda waren vergeten. Die verschuiving, klein als ze klinkt, is precies wat ik zocht.

De staffingautomatisering gaat dieper. Ik noemde de twee fasen MVP 1 en MVP 2, gebouwd tussen acht en twaalf op dezelfde ochtend. Wanneer een bezettingsverzoek binnenkomt, controleert Stewie of alle vereiste informatie aanwezig is: vaardigheden, start- en einddatum, senioriteitsniveau, klantcontext. Als onze scheduler nog niet in de e-mailthread staat, voegt hij haar toe. Vervolgens vergelijkt hij twee systemen: één waar ik een register bijhoud van wie op welk project zit, en één met het volledige profiel van elke consultant in scope, inclusief vaardigheden, bill codes en practice-indeling. Het resultaat is een geprioriteerde shortlist, gescoord op fit en beschikbaarheid, direct in de e-mail meegestuurd.

Toen onze scheduler reageerde dat het “echt geweldig” was dat ik al een voorstel had klaargemaakt, had ik één heldere gedachte: ze realiseert zich nog niet wat dit betekent voor haar rol in de toekomst.

Implicaties: Project Headspace

De automatiseringen lieten me anders nadenken over mijn eigen kennis. Ik begon te werken aan wat ik Project Headspace ben gaan noemen. Het idee is om elke operationele taak die ik momenteel in mijn hoofd draag één voor één om te zetten in een skill. De logica is eenvoudig: als ik een regel duidelijk genoeg kan verwoorden om het aan iemand anders uit te leggen, kan ik het duidelijk genoeg verwoorden voor een agent om het uit te voeren.

Dit is voor mij nu belangrijker dan ooit tevoren. Strategisch werk vereist mentale ruimte, en elke planningsmail die ik niet meer hoef te lezen, elke vergadering die ik niet meer handmatig hoef te weigeren, is een kleine winst op die ruimte. Eerder deze week kwam er een Teams-bericht binnen met de vraag of een collega beschikbaar was. Mijn eerste gedachte was: use case. Stewie handelt nu ook Teams-verzoeken af.

Zodra de automatiseringen draaiden, zette ik een stap die veranderde hoe ik over het hele systeem denk. Ik heb elke automatisering die ik in Scout had gebouwd omgezet naar een benoemde Skill en ze direct geëxporteerd.

Een skill is niet zomaar een opgeslagen workflow; het is een draagbare, herbruikbare eenheid van operationele logica. Door mijn automatiseringen op die manier te structureren, ben ik gestopt ze te zien als eenmalige oplossingen voor specifieke problemen en ben ik ze gaan behandelen als een groeiende bibliotheek van mogelijkheden. Die draagbaarheid is belangrijker dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt. Ik importeer die Skills nu in Copilot Cowork, wat betekent dat de logica die ik eenmalig in Scout heb gebouwd met me mee reist naar een andere werkomgeving zonder opnieuw te worden opgebouwd. De kalenderregel is een skill. De staffingtriage is een skill. Elke keer dat er een nieuwe use case opduikt, zoals toen dat Teams-bericht binnenkwam over de beschikbaarheid van een collega, is de vraag niet langer “kan ik dit automatiseren?” maar “wat moet deze Skill weten, en waar moet hij werken?” Die verschuiving in denkkader is, denk ik, wat knutselen onderscheidt van het bouwen van iets duurzaams.

Van Scout naar Cowork: je skills verfijnen

Een Skill importeren in Cowork is eenvoudig. De snelste route is het Skill.md-bestand rechtstreeks kopiëren naar de Cowork-map in je OneDrive, waarna het direct beschikbaar is. Ik geef de voorkeur aan een andere aanpak: de ingebouwde Skill creator in Copilot Cowork.

Na het plakken van de volledige Skill-inhoud die is geëxporteerd vanuit Scout, doet Cowork iets wat ik oprecht nuttig vind: het analyseert de instructies, brengt verbeteringssuggesties naar voren en laat je elke suggestie individueel accepteren of weigeren. Wanneer dat proces is voltooid, produceert het een gezondheidsanalyse van de Skill, wat je een duidelijk beeld geeft of de logica goed is gestructureerd voordat je hem ooit uitvoert. Die feedbacklus is de extra stap waard. Het verandert wat een eenvoudige bestandskopie had kunnen zijn in een kleine maar bewuste kwaliteitscontrole, en het heeft me er al toe aangezet instructies aan te scherpen die ik duidelijk genoeg dacht te zijn.

Conclusie

Het nuttigste wat ik dit jaar heb gebouwd, is niet het meest technisch indrukwekkende. Stewie schrijft geen strategiedocumenten en genereert geen code. Het weigert vergaderingen en routeert e-mails. Maar het doet die dingen betrouwbaar, transparant en met een snelheid die al heeft veranderd hoe de mensen om me heen werken.

Drie zaken zijn het nauwlettend volgen waard. Ten eerste, of organisaties hun AI-gebruiksbudgetten aanpassen om te weerspiegelen hoe agents daadwerkelijk dagelijks worden gebruikt, in plaats van in pilotscenario’s. Ten tweede, hoe governance-frameworks zich zullen ontwikkelen voor agents die autonoom handelen via e-mail, agenda en gedeelde data, vaak sneller dan toezicht bij kan houden. Ten derde, welke professionele normen zullen ontstaan rond AI-gegenereerde communicatie, en of transparante vermelding een standaard blijft of stilletjes verdwijnt. De scheduler die mijn geautomatiseerde kandidaatvoorstel oprecht indrukwekkend vond, zonder de implicaties ervan voor haar eigen rol te herkennen, zal niet de laatste persoon zijn die zich in die positie bevindt.

Microsoft heeft in mei een Anthropic Claude-dataconnector voor Purview uitgebracht. Claude Enterprise verschijnt nu in DSPM als een benoemde Enterprise AI-app, naast Microsoft 365 Copilot en ChatGPT Enterprise. In deze blog in twee delen ga ik in op wat dit betekent; dit is deel 1.

Liever in het Engels lezen?

De capability-tabel die Microsoft ervoor publiceert heeft 2 vinkjes ✅ en 9 kruisjes ❌. DSPM en auditing worden ondersteund. Classificatie, labels, DLP, Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, eDiscovery en Data Lifecycle Management niet.

Je zou Purviews vermogen om Claude te governen in twijfel kunnen trekken. Maar de tabel beschrijft het integratieoppervlak van één connector. Of Purview Claude kan governen is een andere vraag met een ander antwoord. Daarom gaat deel 2 van deze reeks over handhaving in plaats van compliance. Eerst: wat de connector daadwerkelijk doet.

Wat de connector kan zien

De connector authenticeert bij Anthropics Compliance API en haalt gegevens op volgens een schema. Server-naar-server, dus het maakt niet uit of het apparaat beheerd is of de browser corporate is. Hij toont Claude-gebruik op de laptop van een contractor die nooit in aanraking is geweest met je MDM, en geen enkele endpointcontrole kan dat. Dat is een echte sterke kant.

Anthropics model is hierbij bepalend, want het bepaalt wat de connector kan bereiken. Een Claude Enterprise-tenant heeft één parent-organisatie die identiteit centraliseert, met gekoppelde organisaties van twee soorten: claude.ai-organisaties, waar mensen chatten en content opslaan, en Claude Console-organisaties, waar mensen API-workloads draaien. De directory-endpoints geven data terug van elke gekoppelde organisatie, van beide soorten. De content-endpoints bedienen alleen claude.ai-data. Bij het instellen kies je één of beide datascopes.

• Activity Feed (read:compliance_activities). Authenticatiegebeurtenissen, chatgebeurtenissen, bestandsuploads, beheerdersacties en compliance-auditgebeurtenissen over claude.ai, de Console en de API heen. Het registreert dát er iets gebeurde en wie het deed. Elk Activity-record bevat een actor-object met het e-mailadres, de gebruikers-ID, het IP-adres en de user agent van de gebruiker, plus een getypeerd event en de relevante resource-ID’s. Een claude_chat_created-event geeft je de chat-ID en de project-ID. Geen enkel woord van het gesprek.

• Chat Conversations (read:compliance_user_data). De enige scope die content bevat: chats, bestanden, projecten en projectbijlagen. Dit is wat de ID’s uit de Activity Feed vertaalt naar iets leesbaars voor een mens.

Beide vinkjes noemen read-only rechten, maar met sterk uiteenlopende impact. Het tweede vinkje neemt elke prompt op die jij en je medewerkers in Claude hebben getypt. Behandel ze als twee besluiten met twee akkoorden, want het tweede is een zaak voor de ondernemingsraad, geen IT-wijziging. Ik behandel dit uitgebreid in deel 2.

Drie Anthropic-datavlakken, en slechts één daarvan is deze connector

Houd deze uit elkaar voordat je iets bouwt. Ze worden voortdurend door elkaar gehaald en die verwarring sluipt door in architectuurbeslissingen.

• De Compliance API geeft per-event-records terug voor security-, legal- en complianceteams. Dit is wat Purview consumeert.

• De Analytics API’s, oftewel de Claude Enterprise Analytics API en de Claude Code Analytics API, geven geaggregeerde gebruiks- en kostencijfers terug voor IT en FinOps. Andere vragen, andere sleutels, apart geprovisioned.

• OpenTelemetry is een push-gebaseerde operationele stream vanuit Claude Code en Cowork naar een collector die jij zelf draait. Die raakt Purview nooit. Dat is het terrein van deel 2.

Eén operationele beperking die je makkelijk over het hoofd ziet: alle /v1/compliance/*-endpoints delen een rate limit van 600 requests per minuut per parent-organisatie. Als je de Purview-connector naast een SIEM-pull en een governance-tool van derden draait, putten ze uit hetzelfde budget. Plan je consumenten voordat je tegen de limieten aanloopt en data misloopt.

De capability-tabel, en het mechanisme erachter

Hier staat Claude naast de twee apps waarmee hij vergeleken zal worden.

Beide apps komen in dezelfde Purview-bucket terecht. Ze komen er via compleet verschillende wegen.

• ChatGPT Enterprise is een Data Map-databron. Je registreert de workspace via WorkspaceID in de governanceportal, authenticeert met een OpenAI API-sleutel die in Azure Key Vault staat, en draait volledige of incrementele scans. De scan extraheert prompts en antwoorden. OpenAI-support moet de sleutel handmatig scopen voordat het werkt.

• Claude is een klassieke dataconnector. Je geeft een API-sleutel, een organisatie-ID en een base-URL op, kiest een datascope, stelt een synchronisatiefrequentie in, en hij haalt op. Geen Key Vault. Geen Data Map-registratie. Geen scanconcept.

Dat onderscheid is het hele artikel, want de collection policy-poort zit in het Data Map-scanpad, en Claude komt daar nooit doorheen.

Dit is wat de poort doet. Purviews eDiscovery, Data Lifecycle Management, Communication Compliance en Insider Risk voor AI-apps zijn verankerd aan de Exchange Online-mailbox. Het zijn geen AI-capabilities die toevallig op mailboxen werken. Het zijn mailboxcapabilities. Purview heeft dus nodig dat de interactie een mailboxitem wordt, en de collection policy Capture interactions for enterprise AI apps is wat die materialisatie uitvoert. Microsofts eDiscovery-richtlijnen voor ChatGPT bevestigen dit met zoveel woorden: je doorzoekt die prompts en antwoorden in de mailbox van de gebruiker, filterend op een ItemClass van IPM.SkypeTeams.Message.ConnectedAIApp.Connector.<ChatGPTEnterprise>.

Microsoft noemt die collection policy een harde randvoorwaarde voor de ChatGPT Enterprise-connector. De pagina van de Claude-connector noemt zoiets niet, en de Claude-connector omzeilt de collection policy-machinerie volledig. Hij duwt rechtstreeks in de DSPM- en audittelemetriepijplijn.

Er is dus geen Exchange-item om vast te houden, te bewaren, te beoordelen of te evalueren. 9 kruisjes, één architecturale oorzaak, al het overige is een resultaat daarvan.

Vooruitblik: wat zou moeten veranderen, en waar op te letten

De voor de hand liggende voorspelling is dat Microsoft Claude toevoegt aan de scope van de collection policy en de kruisjes in vinkjes veranderen. Als de collection policy gebonden is aan het Data Map-scanpad, is dat geen simpele wijziging in een scopelijst. Microsoft zou Claude ofwel moeten migreren naar het Data Map-ingestiemodel, of mailboxmaterialisatie moeten inbouwen in het connectorpad waar dat nu niet bestaat.

Er is een tweede afhankelijkheid: mailboxmaterialisatie vereist dat de Anthropic-gebruiker herleid wordt naar een Entra-identiteit met een Exchange Online-mailbox. Voor ChatGPT loopt dat vermoedelijk via het matchen van workspace-e-mail met de UPN. Voor Claude moet Microsoft die koppeling en het mailbox-schrijfpad zelf bouwen. Dit is uiteraard mijn aanname, maar ze volgt logisch uit de werking. Misschien materialiseert dit zich zodra de Anthropic Claude-connector Preview verlaat, maar hoop is geen plan.

Dus: plan voor de kruisjes. Bouw geen complianceprogramma dat ervan uitgaat dat de vinkjes eraan komen, en laat je door geen enkele leverancier vertellen dat ze in de volgende golf komen.

Het signaal om op te letten is Claude die verschijnt in de scope van de collection policy Capture interactions for enterprise AI apps, of Claude die verschijnt als een Data Map-brontype. Beide zouden aangeven dat Microsoft het werk heeft gedaan. Zet “Use Microsoft Purview to manage data security & compliance for Anthropic Claude (Enterprise)” en “Set up a connector to manage Anthropic Claude data” op Microsoft Learn op een change-watchlist en bekijk ze regelmatig.

Retentie en dispositie, die niet zitten waar je denkt

Data Lifecycle Management is een kruisje, dus Purview kan Claude-content niet bewaren of verwijderen. De conclusie die je hieruit zou kunnen trekken is dat je helemaal geen dispositiemogelijkheid hebt. Die conclusie is onjuist, en dat is meer waard dan de constatering die ertoe leidde.

Ten eerste, retentie. De Compliance API FAQ stelt dat de Activity Feed zes jaar aan organisatie-activiteit bewaart, en dat chat-, bestands- en projectcontent het retentiebeleid volgt dat jouw organisatie heeft ingesteld, wat standaard onbeperkt is. Zes jaar audittrail is ruim. Onbeperkte contentretentie als standaard is een besluit dat iemand bewust moet nemen, en de instelling zit in Anthropics organisatie-instellingen onder Data en privacy, niet in Purview.

Ten tweede, en dit is de regel die verstopt zit in de subpagina’s: de content-endpoints van de Compliance API ondersteunen verwijdering. Chats, bestanden en projecten ophalen en verwijderen, op aanvraag, programmatisch, met een Compliance Access Key. Dat is een werkende defensible-disposition-mogelijkheid, en een werkend GDPR Artikel 17-recht-op-vergetelheid-pad.

Je kunt Claude-content verwijderen. De mogelijkheid is alleen nog niet beschikbaar via Purview. Voorlopig bestaat het dus alleen in Anthropics API. Ga er voorlopig van uit dat het nooit in je Purview-retentiebeleidsinventaris verschijnt, daardoor nooit in Compliance Manager opduikt, en geen enkele auditor die je DLM beoordeelt het ooit zal zien.

Mijn advies: bouw het verwijderpad en breng het binnen je governance in plaats van het op de plank te laten liggen. Scripts de delete-endpoints van de Compliance API, zet het script onder wijzigingsbeheer met een aangewezen eigenaar, en verwijs er expliciet naar in je retentieschema, naast de Purview-beleidsregels waar het bij hoort. Test het tegen een niet-productiegebruiker en bevestig dat de verwijdering zijn eigen event in de Activity Feed schrijft, want dat event is het bewijs dat een toezichthouder zal opvragen. Een erasure-mogelijkheid die niemand ooit heeft uitgeoefend is geen mogelijkheid, het is een intentie.

Vooruitblik op retentie

Als Microsoft Claude in de collection policy verwerkt, en ik denk dat dat aannemelijk is, wordt Claude-content mailboxitems en gaat Purview DLM erop toepassen. Op dat moment heb je twee dispositiemechanismen die vanuit verschillende richtingen op dezelfde content werken, met verschillende klokken, en zonder onderlinge afstemming.

Dat is een probleem om nu al over na te denken in plaats van er later achter te komen. Welke retentieperiode je ook aan de Anthropic-kant instelt, dat zou de periode moeten zijn die je een Purview-beleid zou willen laten afdwingen, zodat de twee samenkomen in plaats van botsen.

Implementatienotities

1. Eerst de geschiktheid, want die kun je makkelijk over het hoofd zien. De Compliance API bestaat alleen op het Claude Enterprise-licentieplan. Claude Team, Pro en Max kunnen dit helemaal niet gebruiken. Microsoft kan niet om een scope heen engineeren die Anthropic niet blootstelt, en de randvoorwaarde in Microsofts documentatie is een upstream-afhankelijkheid.

2. Vraag Compliance API-toegang aan en maak de juiste sleutel aan. Er zijn twee soorten sleutels, een Compliance Access Key en een Admin API-sleutel. De Purview-connector heeft conversatie-content nodig, dus vereist hij de Compliance Access Key. Als je alleen metadata wilt binnenhalen, volstaat de Admin API-sleutel, en die is de laagst geprivilegieerde optie. Kies bewust.

3. Begin alleen met de Activity Feed. Bevestig dat de connector gezond is, bevestig dat data na ongeveer een dag binnenkomt, en houd de syncstatus in Purview Data Connectors in de gaten. Metadata is een eenvoudig privacygesprek en levert direct waarde op.

4. Neem Chat Conversations apart mee. Volledige prompt- en antwoordinname is een ander verhaal en verdient zijn eigen akkoord.

5. Bouw het reviewritme handmatig op. Er is geen kant-en-klaar beleid specifiek voor Claude. Plan een terugkerende beoordeling van DSPM for AI-rapporten en Activity Explorer, gefilterd op Enterprise AI-apps en Anthropic Claude, met een aangewezen eigenaar. Reviews zonder eigenaar overleven de eerste drukke maand niet.

Het onderscheid dat er echt toe doet

Terug naar waar ik begon, want dat is de reden dat er een deel 2 komt.

9 kruisjes op de capability-tabel van de connector betekenen niet dat Purview Claude niet kan governen. Ze betekenen dat déze connector niet kan classificeren, labelen, blokkeren of ontdekken via de Compliance API-integratie. Dat is een uitspraak over één integratieoppervlak.

Purview heeft andere oppervlakken, en die zijn app-agnostisch. Endpoint DLP weet of maakt het niet uit of een proces Claude heet. Network Data Security beoordeelt verkeer, geen leveranciers. Sensitivity labels en hun beveiligingen reizen mee met het bestand, ongeacht welke applicatie het probeert te openen. Die controles bestaan al jaren, en de meeste ervan zijn waarschijnlijk al gelicentieerd in jouw tenant.

De connector is een zichtbaarheidsintegratie. Handhaving zou altijd al van het endpoint en het netwerk moeten komen. De capability-tabel lezen als “Purview kan Claude niet beheersen” is de verkeerde interpretatie, en die leidt organisaties tot de conclusie dat ze een product van een derde partij nodig hebben, terwijl ze in de meeste gevallen gewoon een DLP-beleid nodig hebben binnen een oplossing die ze al bezitten.

Vooruitkijkend proberen we dit in het volgende deel te behandelen. Het blokkeren van Claude Code bij het lezen van gelabelde bestanden met Endpoint DLP restricted app groups. Microsoft shipped an Anthropic Claude data connector for Purview back in May. Claude Enterprise now appears in DSPM as a named Enterprise AI app, alongside Microsoft 365 Copilot and ChatGPT Enterprise. In this 2 part blog I dive in a bit on what this means, this is part 1.

The capability table Microsoft publishes for it has 2 ticks ✅ and 9 crosses ❌. DSPM and auditing are supported. Classification, Labels, DLP, Insider Risk Management, Communication compliance, eDiscovery and Data Lifecycle Management are not.

You might question Purview’s ability to govern Claude. However, it describes one connector’s integration surface. Whether Purview can govern Claude is a separate question with a separate answer. It is why Part 2 of this series is about enforcement rather than compliance. First, what the connector actually does.

What the connector can see

The connector authenticates to Anthropic’s Compliance API and pulls on a schedule. Server to server, so it is indifferent to whether the device is managed or the browser is corporate. It will surface Claude usage on a contractor’s laptop that never touched your MDM, and no endpoint control can do that; and that is a real strength.

Anthropic’s model matters here, because it determines what the connector can reach. A Claude Enterprise tenant has one parent organization that centralizes identity, with linked organizations of two kinds: claude.ai organizations, where people chat and store content, and Claude Console organizations, where people run API workloads. The directory endpoints return data from every linked organization of either kind. The content endpoints serve claude.ai data only. At setup you select one or both data scopes.

• Activity Feed (read:compliance_activities). Authentication events, chat events, file uploads, admin actions and compliance audit events across claude.ai, the Console and the API. It records that something happened and who did it. Each Activity record carries an actor object containing the user’s email address, user ID, IP address and user agent, plus a typed event and the relevant resource identifiers. A claude_chat_created event gives you the chat ID and the project ID. It does not give you a word of the conversation.

• Chat Conversations (read:compliance_user_data). The only scope carrying content: chats, files, projects and project attachments. This is what resolves the identifiers in the Activity Feed into something a human can read.

Those two checkboxes both mention read-only permissions but with vastly different impact. The second checkbox ingests every prompt you and your employees typed into Claude. Treat them as two decisions with two sign-offs, because the second one is a Works Council matter rather than an IT change. I will cover that properly in Part 2.

Three Anthropic data planes, and only one of them is this connector

Separate these before you build anything. They get conflated constantly and the confusion propagates into architecture decisions.

• The Compliance API returns per-event records for security, legal and compliance teams. This is what Purview consumes.

• The Analytics APIs, meaning the Claude Enterprise Analytics API and the Claude Code Analytics API, return aggregated usage and cost figures for IT and FinOps. Different questions, different keys, provisioned separately.

• OpenTelemetry is a push-based operational stream from Claude Code and Cowork to a collector you run. It never touches Purview. That is Part 2’s territory.

One operational constraint that might be overlooked. All /v1/compliance/* endpoints share a rate limit of 600 requests per minute per parent organization. If you run the Purview connector alongside a SIEM pull and a third-party governance tool, they draw on the same budget. Plan the consumers before you reach the limits and miss out on data.

The capability table, and the mechanism behind it

Here is Claude next to the two apps you will be compared against.

Both apps land in the same Purview bucket. They arrive by completely different roads.

• ChatGPT Enterprise is a Data Map data source. You register the workspace by WorkspaceID in the governance portal, authenticate with an OpenAI API key held in Azure Key Vault, and run full or incremental scans. The scan extracts prompts and responses. OpenAI support has to manually scope the key before it works.

• Claude is a classic data connector. You supply an API key, an organisation ID and a base URL, pick a data scope, set a sync frequency, and it pulls. No Key Vault. No Data Map registration. No scan concept.

That distinction is the whole article, because the collection policy gate lives in the Data Map scan path, and Claude never enters it.

Here is what the gate does. Purview's eDiscovery, Data Lifecycle Management, communication compliance and Insider Risk for AI apps are anchored to the Exchange Online mailbox. They are not AI capabilities that happen to work on mailboxes. They are mailbox capabilities. So Purview needs the interaction to become a mailbox item, and the collection policy Capture interactions for enterprise AI apps is what performs that materialisation. Microsoft's ChatGPT eDiscovery guidance confirms it outright: you search those prompts and responses in the user's mailbox, filtering on an ItemClass of IPM.SkypeTeams.Message.ConnectedAIApp.Connector.<ChatGPTEnterprise>

Microsoft lists that collection policy as a hard prerequisite for the ChatGPT Enterprise connector. The Claude connector page lists no such thing, and the Claude connector bypasses the collection policy machinery entirely. It pushes straight into the DSPM and audit telemetry pipe.

So there is no Exchange item to hold, retain, review or evaluate. 9 crosses, one architectural cause, everything else is a downstream result of it.

Forward look: what would have to change, and what to watch

The obvious prediction is that Microsoft adds Claude to the collection policy’s scope and the crosses turn to ticks. If the collection policy is bound to the Data Map scan path, that is not a scope-list edit. Microsoft would have to either migrate Claude onto the Data Map ingestion model, or build mailbox materialization into the data connector path where it does not currently exist.

There is a second dependency: mailbox materialization needs the Anthrophic user resolved to an Entra identity with an Exchange Online mailbox. For ChatGPT that presumably rides on workspace email matching UPN. For Claude, Microsoft has to build that mapping and the mailbox write path. Obviously this is my assumption, but it follows from the mechanics. Maybe this will materialize once the Anthropic Claude connector moves out of Preview, but hope is not a plan.

So: plan for the crosses. Do not build a compliance program that assumes the ticks arrive, and do not let a vendor tell you they are coming in the next wave.

The signal to watch is Claude appearing in the scope of the Capture interactions for enterprise AI apps collection policy, or Claude appearing as a Data Map source type. Either would tell you Microsoft has done the work. Put Use Microsoft Purview to manage data security & compliance for Anthropic Claude (Enterprise) | Microsoft Learn and Set up a connector to manage Anthropic Claude data | Microsoft Learn on a change-watch list and review regularly.

Retention and disposition, which are not where you think they are

Data Lifecycle Management is a cross, so Purview cannot retain or dispose of Claude content. The conclusion you might draw from this is that you have no disposition capability at all. That conclusion is wrong, and it is worth more to you than the observation that produced it.

First, retention. Compliance API FAQ says that the Activity Feed retains six years of organization activity, and chat, file and project content follows the retention policy your organization configured, which is indefinite by default. Six years of audit trail is generous. Indefinite content retention by default is a decision someone has to take deliberately, and the control lives in Anthrophics Organization settings specific to Data and privacy, not in Purview.

Second, and this is the line buried in the sub-pages: the Compliance API’s content endpoints support deletion. Retrieve and delete chats, files and projects, on demand, programmatically, with a Compliance Access Key. That is a working defensible-disposition capability, and a working GDPR Article 17 right-to-erasure path.

You can dispose of Claude content. The capability isn’t yet available through Purview. So for the time being, it only lives in Anthropic’s API. For the time being, assume that it never appears in your Purview retention policy inventory, thereby never shows up in Compliance Manager, and no auditor reviewing your DLM will ever see it.

My guidance: Build the deletion path and bring it inside your governance rather than leaving it on the shelf. Script the Compliance API delete endpoints, put the script under change control with a named owner, and reference it explicitly in your retention schedule alongside the Purview policies it sits next to. Test it against a non-production user and confirm the deletion writes its own event into the Activity Feed, because that event is the evidence a regulator will ask for. An erasure capability nobody has exercised is not a capability, it is an intention.

Forward look on retention

If Microsoft wires Claude into the collection policy, and I think that it plausibly will, Claude content becomes mailbox items and Purview DLM starts applying to it. At that point you would have two disposition mechanisms operating on the same content from different directions, with different clocks, and no coordination between them.

That is a problem worth thinking about now rather than discovering later. Whatever retention period you configure on the Anthropic side should be the one you would want a Purview policy to enforce, so that the two converge rather than collide.

Deployment notes

1. Eligibility first, because that might be overlooked. The Compliance API only exists on the Claude Enterprise license plan. Claude Team, Pro and Max cannot use this at all. Microsoft cannot engineer around a scope Anthropic does not expose, and the prerequisite in Microsoft’s documentation is an upstream dependency.

2. Request Compliance API access and create the right key. There are two key types, a Compliance Access Key and an Admin API key. The Purview Connector needs conversation content, so it requires the Compliance Access key. However, if you only intent to ingest metadata, then the Admin API key is sufficient and is the lower-privileged option. Choose deliberately.

3. Start with Activity Feed only. Confirm the connector is healthy, confirm data lands after roughly a day, and watch sync status within Purview Data Connectors. Metadata carries an easy privacy conversation and gives you immediate value.

4. Take Chat Conversations separately. Full prompt and response ingestion is a different proposition and deserves its own sign-off.

5. Build the review rhythm manually. There are no one-click policy specifically for Claude. Schedule a recurring review of DSPM for AI reports and activity explorer filtered to Enterprise AI apps and Anthropic Claude, with a named owner. Reviews without an owner do not survive the first busy month.

The distinction that actually matters

Back to where I started, because it is the reason there is a Part 2.

9 crosses on the connector’s capability table do not mean Purview cannot govern Claude. They mean this connector cannot classify, label, block or discover through the Compliance API integration. That is a statement about one integration surface.

Purview has other surfaces, and they are app-agnostic. Endpoint DLP does not know or care that a process is called Claude. Network Data Security evaluates traffic, not vendors. Sensitivity labels and their protections travel with the file regardless of which application tries to open it. Those controls have existed for years, and likely most of them are already licensed in your tenant.

The connector is a visibility integration. Enforcement was always going to come from the endpoint and the network. Reading the capability table as “Purview cannot control Claude” is the misread, and it leads organizations to conclude they need a third-party product when in most cases they need a DLP policy within a solution they already own.

Almost every organization I speak to these days is experimenting with agents. Sometimes they are building two or three, sometimes twenty. The enthusiasm is genuine and, honestly, it is nice to see. There is a lot of curiosity, people are willing to try things and ideas that would have sounded unrealistic a few years ago suddenly feel within reach.

The problem is that many of these projects eventually hit the same wall. The agent kind of works, but not quite. It answers some questions well and others badly. Its scope has gradually expanded, nobody is completely sure what it is supposed to do anymore and the person who originally built it has already moved on to something else. The rest of the team keeps trying for a while, but eventually they quietly return to the way they worked before.

When that happens, the immediate conclusion is often that the technology is not ready yet, or that the model is not capable enough. Sometimes that is true, but usually the problem is less exciting. The scope was too broad, the data was not reliable enough, ownership was unclear or the agent never really fitted into the way people work.

Over the past year, I have had versions of this conversation with many different people, and my advice has been almost identical every time: start small, see whether it genuinely helps someone and learn from what happens before deciding what to build next.

If your first agent makes someone’s working day 2% easier, that is already a win. In fact, your first agent should probably be a little boring. It should do one useful thing reliably, rather than ten impressive things occasionally.

Why we all want to start big

There is a good reason teams skip the small version. Small improvements are difficult to get excited about, especially when most of the examples around us are anything but small.

The demos make agents look easy. Microsoft, Anthropic and almost every other vendor are showing agents that plan trips, close deals and rebuild your quarterly forecast while you sleep. Nobody gets on stage to demonstrate an agent that saves someone four minutes a day.

The same dynamic exists inside organizations. “We are going to automate the customer service operation” sounds much better in a steering committee than “we are going to help two employees find the right SharePoint page faster.” The first one sounds strategic and has transformation, innovation and budget written all over it. The second sounds like something you probably could have done last week.

So teams choose the ambitious version. They spend months designing and building it, connect multiple systems and try to cover every possible scenario. By the time it reaches users, it turns out there are ten edge cases nobody considered, three data sources nobody can access and one senior manager who does not trust the answers.

Meanwhile, the small version was never built at all.

That is unfortunate, because the small version would probably have answered some of the most important questions much earlier. Can we reach the data? Is the answer reliable? Does this fit into an existing process? Will anyone actually use it? These are not particularly exciting questions, but they determine whether the bigger idea has any chance of succeeding.

What “small” actually means

Starting small does not mean that you lack ambition. It simply means being narrow enough to learn something useful.

For me, a good first agent usually has one task, serves one role and produces one clear outcome. Ideally, that outcome is something you can observe or measure soon after releasing it, rather than something that may eventually contribute to a broad strategic objective.

The “Order status” agent I demonstrated at the Retail Parade is a good example. It does exactly one thing: it takes a customer question about an order, retrieves the relevant information and returns a status response (in the language of the original email).

It does not handle returns, resolve complaints or recommend another product. It does not try to become the entire customer service department. It just provides an order status.

That may not sound especially ambitious, but that is exactly why it is useful. If the agent performs that one task reliably, you immediately learn several important things. You know whether the required data is available, whether the agent can interpret the question correctly and whether the answer is good enough for someone to act on.

Most importantly, you learn whether users trust it enough to come back a second time.

Those signals are worth much more than an impressive roadmap. A roadmap shows what you hope to build. Repeated usage shows that you have already built something people value.

The 2% rule

I keep coming back to the idea of 2% in customer conversations, so I might as well put it on paper.

If you make someone’s daily work 2% easier, you have already achieved something meaningful. Not because 2% sounds particularly impressive, but because small improvements are easier to repeat. Something that saves a few minutes might not transform an entire department overnight, but if it helps every working day, the effect eventually becomes significant.

The more important effect is not really about the time saved, though. It is about what happens next.

When people feel that a tool genuinely helps them, even a little, they start thinking about other ways they could use it. They return to it without being reminded, mention it to a colleague or suggest another task it might handle. That is the flywheel you want and it rarely starts with a big launch. More often, it starts with someone saying, “Hey, this is actually quite useful.”

Big-bang agents do not automatically create that response. They may create a training session, a change management deck and a survey nobody fills in, but none of those things can compensate for an agent that is not useful during a normal working day.

Adoption is much easier when the value is obvious. If people need to be repeatedly convinced to use an agent, that may be a sign that the problem is not adoption at all. The agent might simply not be helping them enough.

Build, test and learn

The pattern I recommend is deliberately simple. Choose one narrow task and build the smallest agent that can perform it. Give it to a handful of real users, not only to the people who are already enthusiastic about AI, and observe what happens.

You do not need an elaborate measurement framework at this stage. Look at something straightforward: how often people use it, whether it saves them time, whether the answers are correct often enough and how frequently users return to the old process. Even informal feedback can tell you a lot, as long as it comes from people doing real work rather than from a project team trying to validate its own idea.

Based on that, you decide what happens next. If the agent works, you can expand carefully. If it does not, you reduce the scope or reconsider the problem.

That second outcome is where many teams struggle. When an agent does not perform well, the instinct is often to add something. More instructions, a more capable model, another knowledge source, an additional tool or a more complicated flow.

Sometimes those additions are necessary, but they can also hide the real problem. The scope may already be too broad. The data may be incomplete or inconsistent. Nobody may have defined what a good answer should look like. It is even possible that users simply do not need what is being built.

Adding more technology does not solve any of those things. In some cases, the best next step is not to make the agent more capable, but to make it smaller.

That may feel like moving backwards, especially after time and budget have already been invested. In reality, it is exactly what experimentation is supposed to uncover. Finding out early that something needs to change is not failure. Spending another six months avoiding that conclusion probably is.

First it works, then you proceed

Starting small does not mean staying small. Once the first agent reliably performs its task and people use it without being reminded, that is exactly the moment to build on top of it.

You might add a second task, connect another data source or introduce an approval step. The first agent could also hand work over to another small agent that handles the next part of the process. The difference is that you are no longer building on assumptions. You are building on something that already works and that users have learned to trust.

This makes every next step a smaller ask. You do not have to introduce an entirely new way of working each time, because the foundation is already familiar. You can expand gradually while continuing to observe whether each addition improves the experience or simply makes the system more complicated.

The important part is knowing when that foundation is ready. An agent working in a controlled demonstration is not the same as an agent working in practice. A demo follows the happy path, uses familiar questions and usually has the builder nearby in case something goes wrong.

The real test is whether it works on a normal Tuesday afternoon for someone who is not part of the project team. Someone who phrases the question differently, does not know how the agent was built and has no patience for an answer that is almost correct.

Conclusion

The best first agent is not necessarily the one that impresses your board. It is the one that a handful of people quietly start using every day, without needing to think about it.

At this stage, that is what winning looks like. One task, one role and one clear outcome. Once that works, you have something worth building on.

Bijna iedere organisatie die ik tegenwoordig spreek, experimenteert met agents. Soms bouwen ze er twee of drie, soms twintig. Het enthousiasme is oprecht en eerlijk gezegd is het mooi om te zien. Er is veel nieuwsgierigheid, mensen zijn bereid om dingen uit te proberen en ideeën die een paar jaar geleden nog onrealistisch klonken, lijken ineens binnen handbereik.

Liever in het Engels lezen?

Het probleem is dat veel van deze projecten uiteindelijk tegen dezelfde muur aanlopen. De agent werkt min of meer, maar nét niet goed genoeg. Sommige vragen beantwoordt hij goed en andere slecht. De scope is gaandeweg steeds breder geworden, niemand weet meer precies wat de agent eigenlijk hoort te doen en degene die hem oorspronkelijk heeft gebouwd, is alweer met iets anders bezig. De rest van het team probeert het nog een tijdje, maar valt uiteindelijk stilletjes terug op de oude werkwijze.

Als dat gebeurt, luidt de eerste conclusie vaak dat de technologie er nog niet klaar voor is of dat het model niet krachtig genoeg is. Soms klopt dat, maar meestal is het probleem een stuk minder spannend. De scope was te breed, de data was niet betrouwbaar genoeg, het eigenaarschap was onduidelijk of de agent sloot simpelweg niet goed aan op de manier waarop mensen werken.

Het afgelopen jaar heb ik dit gesprek in allerlei vormen met veel verschillende mensen gevoerd. Mijn advies was vrijwel elke keer hetzelfde: begin klein, kijk of het iemand daadwerkelijk helpt en leer van wat er gebeurt voordat je beslist wat je daarna gaat bouwen.

Als je eerste agent iemands werkdag 2% makkelijker maakt, is dat al winst. Sterker nog, je eerste agent mag best een beetje saai zijn. Hij kan beter één nuttige taak betrouwbaar uitvoeren dan tien indrukwekkende dingen slechts af en toe goed doen.

Waarom we allemaal groot willen beginnen

Er is een goede reden waarom teams de kleine variant overslaan. Het is lastig om enthousiast te worden van kleine verbeteringen, zeker als de voorbeelden om ons heen allesbehalve klein zijn.

In demo’s lijken agents eenvoudig. Microsoft, Anthropic en vrijwel iedere andere leverancier laten agents zien die reizen plannen, deals sluiten en je kwartaalprognose opnieuw opbouwen terwijl jij slaapt. Niemand stapt het podium op om een agent te demonstreren die iemand vier minuten per dag bespaart.

Binnen organisaties speelt dezelfde dynamiek. “We gaan onze klantenservice automatiseren” klinkt in een stuurgroep veel beter dan “we gaan twee medewerkers helpen om sneller de juiste SharePoint-pagina te vinden.” De eerste variant klinkt strategisch en ademt transformatie, innovatie en budget. De tweede klinkt als iets wat je vorige week al had kunnen regelen.

Teams kiezen daarom voor de ambitieuze variant. Ze besteden maanden aan het ontwerpen en bouwen ervan, koppelen meerdere systemen en proberen ieder mogelijk scenario af te dekken. Tegen de tijd dat de agent bij gebruikers terechtkomt, blijken er tien uitzonderingssituaties te zijn waar niemand aan heeft gedacht, drie databronnen waar niemand toegang toe krijgt en één senior manager die de antwoorden niet vertrouwt.

Ondertussen is de kleine variant helemaal niet gebouwd.

Dat is jammer, want die kleine variant had waarschijnlijk veel eerder antwoord gegeven op een aantal van de belangrijkste vragen. Kunnen we bij de data? Is het antwoord betrouwbaar? Past dit binnen een bestaand proces? Gaat iemand het daadwerkelijk gebruiken? Het zijn misschien geen bijzonder spannende vragen, maar ze bepalen wel of het grotere idee überhaupt kans van slagen heeft.

Wat ‘klein’ eigenlijk betekent

Klein beginnen betekent niet dat je geen ambitie hebt. Het betekent simpelweg dat je de scope voldoende afbakent om er iets nuttigs van te kunnen leren.

Een goede eerste agent heeft wat mij betreft meestal één taak, ondersteunt één rol en levert één duidelijk resultaat op. Idealiter kun je dat resultaat kort na de introductie al waarnemen of meten. Het moet niet iets zijn waarvan je alleen kunt zeggen dat het op termijn misschien bijdraagt aan een brede strategische doelstelling.

De ‘Orderstatus’-agent die ik tijdens Retail Parade demonstreerde, is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Deze agent doet precies één ding: hij ontvangt een klantvraag over een bestelling, haalt de relevante informatie op en geeft de actuele status terug in de taal van de oorspronkelijke e-mail.

De agent verwerkt geen retourzendingen, lost geen klachten op en beveelt geen andere producten aan. Hij probeert niet de volledige klantenservice over te nemen. Hij geeft alleen de status van een bestelling door.

Dat klinkt misschien niet bijzonder ambitieus, maar juist daarom is het zo nuttig. Als de agent die ene taak betrouwbaar uitvoert, leer je direct een aantal belangrijke dingen. Je ontdekt of de benodigde data beschikbaar is, of de agent de vraag correct kan interpreteren en of het antwoord goed genoeg is om er daadwerkelijk iets mee te doen.

Het belangrijkste is dat je ontdekt of gebruikers de agent voldoende vertrouwen om hem een tweede keer te gebruiken.

Die signalen zijn veel meer waard dan een indrukwekkende roadmap. Een roadmap laat zien wat je hoopt te bouwen. Herhaald gebruik laat zien dat je al iets hebt gebouwd waar mensen waarde aan hechten.

De 2%-regel

In gesprekken met klanten kom ik steeds terug op het idee van 2%, dus kan ik het net zo goed eens opschrijven.

Als je iemands dagelijkse werk 2% makkelijker maakt, heb je al iets waardevols bereikt. Niet omdat 2% nu zo indrukwekkend klinkt, maar omdat kleine verbeteringen gemakkelijker te herhalen zijn. Iets dat een paar minuten bespaart, verandert misschien niet van de ene op de andere dag een hele afdeling. Als het echter iedere werkdag helpt, wordt het effect uiteindelijk aanzienlijk.

Het belangrijkste effect gaat eigenlijk niet over de bespaarde tijd. Het gaat om wat er daarna gebeurt.

Wanneer mensen merken dat een hulpmiddel hen echt helpt, al is het maar een beetje, gaan ze vanzelf nadenken over andere manieren waarop ze het zouden kunnen gebruiken. Ze keren er zonder herinnering naar terug, vertellen een collega erover of stellen een andere taak voor die de agent misschien kan uitvoeren. Dat is het vliegwiel dat je op gang wilt brengen en dat begint zelden met een grote lancering. Veel vaker begint het met iemand die zegt: “Hé, dit is eigenlijk best handig.”

Agents die in één grote klap worden gelanceerd, roepen die reactie niet automatisch op. Ze leveren misschien een trainingssessie, een presentatie over verandermanagement en een enquête op die niemand invult. Geen van die dingen kan echter compenseren voor een agent die tijdens een normale werkdag niet nuttig is.

Adoptie is veel eenvoudiger wanneer de waarde direct duidelijk is. Als je mensen er steeds opnieuw van moet overtuigen om een agent te gebruiken, ligt het probleem misschien helemaal niet bij de adoptie. Mogelijk helpt de agent hen gewoon niet genoeg.

Bouwen, testen en leren

Het patroon dat ik aanraad, is bewust eenvoudig. Kies één duidelijk afgebakende taak en bouw de kleinst mogelijke agent die deze kan uitvoeren. Geef hem vervolgens aan een handvol echte gebruikers. Dus niet alleen aan de mensen die toch al enthousiast zijn over AI. Kijk daarna goed wat er gebeurt.

In deze fase heb je nog geen uitgebreid meetmodel nodig. Kijk naar eenvoudige zaken: hoe vaak mensen de agent gebruiken, of hij tijd bespaart, of de antwoorden vaak genoeg correct zijn en hoe vaak gebruikers terugvallen op het oude proces. Zelfs informele feedback kan je veel vertellen, zolang die afkomstig is van mensen die daadwerkelijk met de agent werken en niet van een projectteam dat vooral het eigen idee probeert te bevestigen.

Op basis daarvan bepaal je de volgende stap. Werkt de agent goed, dan kun je hem voorzichtig uitbreiden. Werkt hij niet, dan verklein je de scope of kijk je opnieuw naar het probleem dat je probeert op te lossen.

Vooral dat tweede scenario vinden veel teams lastig. Wanneer een agent niet goed presteert, is de eerste reactie vaak om iets toe te voegen. Meer instructies, een krachtiger model, nog een kennisbron, een extra tool of een ingewikkeldere flow.

Soms zijn zulke toevoegingen nodig, maar ze kunnen ook het werkelijke probleem verbergen. Misschien is de scope al te breed. Misschien is de data onvolledig of inconsistent. Misschien heeft niemand bepaald hoe een goed antwoord eruit moet zien. Het is zelfs mogelijk dat gebruikers helemaal geen behoefte hebben aan wat er wordt gebouwd.

Meer technologie toevoegen lost geen van deze problemen op. In sommige gevallen is de beste volgende stap niet om de agent meer mogelijkheden te geven, maar om hem juist kleiner te maken.

Dat kan voelen als een stap achteruit, zeker als er al tijd en budget in zijn geïnvesteerd. In werkelijkheid is dit precies wat je met experimenteren probeert te ontdekken. Er vroeg achter komen dat iets moet veranderen, is geen mislukking. Nog eens zes maanden besteden aan het vermijden van die conclusie waarschijnlijk wel.

Eerst zorgen dat het werkt, daarna verder bouwen

Klein beginnen betekent niet dat je klein moet blijven. Zodra de eerste agent zijn taak betrouwbaar uitvoert en mensen hem zonder herinneringen gebruiken, is dat precies het juiste moment om erop voort te bouwen.

Je kunt een tweede taak toevoegen, een andere databron koppelen of een goedkeuringsstap introduceren. De eerste agent kan werk ook doorgeven aan een andere kleine agent die het volgende deel van het proces afhandelt. Het verschil is dat je niet langer voortbouwt op aannames. Je bouwt verder op iets dat al werkt en dat gebruikers inmiddels vertrouwen.

Daardoor wordt iedere volgende stap kleiner. Je hoeft niet telkens een compleet nieuwe werkwijze te introduceren, omdat de basis al bekend is. Je kunt geleidelijk uitbreiden en ondertussen blijven kijken of iedere toevoeging de ervaring verbetert of het systeem alleen maar ingewikkelder maakt.

Het belangrijkste is dat je weet wanneer die basis klaar is. Een agent die in een gecontroleerde demonstratie werkt, is niet hetzelfde als een agent die in de praktijk werkt. Een demo volgt het ideale scenario, gebruikt bekende vragen en meestal is de bouwer in de buurt voor het geval er iets misgaat.

De echte test is of de agent op een gewone dinsdagmiddag werkt voor iemand die geen deel uitmaakt van het projectteam. Iemand die de vraag net anders formuleert, niet weet hoe de agent is gebouwd en geen geduld heeft voor een antwoord dat bijna goed is.

Conclusie

De beste eerste agent is niet per se de agent waarmee je indruk maakt op het bestuur. Het is de agent die een handvol mensen stilletjes iedere dag gaat gebruiken, zonder dat ze daar bewust over hoeven na te denken.

In deze fase ziet succes er zo uit: één taak, één rol en één duidelijk resultaat. Zodra dat werkt, heb je iets dat het waard is om verder op te bouwen.

What I talked about

AI is no longer just a tool that waits for a prompt. In enterprise workflows, it’s becoming a delegated actor; reasoning over context, triggering actions, moving across systems. That changes the security model in ways most organizations haven’t fully reckoned with yet. In this talk, I covered:

• How a modern AI-amplified breach can unfold in minutes, from token harvest to data exfiltration

• That this reality collapses the defender’s decision window, and what that means for security operating models

• Why Zero Trust is still a relevant and necessary foundation, and what the next floor of the security stack looks like

• The shift from human-paced to AI-led, human-owned defense

The core message: if AI becomes more agentic, cybersecurity must become more agentic as well. Not uncontrolled. Not unmanaged. But able to observe, decide, and act at machine speed, under human-owned governance.

Looking back

What I valued most were the conversations on how to position cybersecurity in this new reality. Not as a control function trying to slow things down, but as an enabler that understands how work is actually changing. AI doesn’t just introduce new threats. It changes the shape of responsibility. The boundary between user and system blurs. Actions get delegated. Decisions get accelerated. And with that, some of our implicit assumptions on identity, intent, and control start to break.

Microsoft Scout is a good example of that shift. It doesn’t “hack” anything. It follows instructions, operates within the permissions you give it, and still manages to bypass safeguards that were designed for a different model of interaction. In my own case, it can simply retrieve the one‑time password from my mailbox and use it to progress Substack’s email-based sign‑in flow, without ever needing access to my password manager. That’s the uncomfortable truth: many of our current controls were built for humans clicking buttons, not for agents executing goals.

There are still services that rely on text- and email-based MFA challenges. So the question is no longer whether MFA is enabled, or whether data is protected at rest and in transit. The question becomes: who or what is acting on behalf of whom, under what constraints, and how do we make that observable and enforceable at runtime?

That is a different problem space. One that requires us to rethink identity, session integrity, and policy enforcement in an agent-driven world.

If anything, working with Scout reinforced a simple point for me: security doesn’t get weaker with AI. It gets more exposed. The gaps were always there. AI just finds them faster, and at scale. That’s where the opportunity is as well. Not to block this evolution, but to redesign our controls so they are native to it.

It was great taking the stage. I learned a lot from this experience, and look forward to the next opportunity.

Meanwhile, consumption‑based pricing and data usage in models like Claude Fable 5 raise new questions. What do you still trust, what do you enable, and when do you say: this is cool, but not in my tenant.

And as if that wasn’t enough, we dive into home automation, AI in the car, and why voice assistants are often just… unnecessary.

The conclusion? AI is no longer something you use. It’s something that increasingly works alongside you. Or sometimes a little too enthusiastically on your behalf.

With visible control, permissions, personality settings, and enough hype to make you wonder whether Copilot is still the main character.

At the same time, we reflect on the other side of the coin: security, billing, governance, and what happens when this kind of tooling ends up in the wrong hands. From Defender agents to M‑Dash and keynote‑worthy scenarios where speed suddenly becomes a risk.

In the end, one feeling lingers above all else: this doesn’t feel like a preview. It feels like something you never want to give back. And that might be exactly what makes this episode dangerously interesting.

Something shifted this week. Not in the usual, incremental way that AI tools tend to improve, but in a way that made it genuinely difficult to focus on anything else. Microsoft Scout, announced at Microsoft Build and already available to frontier customers, is an agent that reads your Teams messages, opens your browser, runs Python scripts, schedules meetings, and files exports to SharePoint, all without being asked twice. It sounds like a product roadmap slide. It is not. It is version 0.22, built in 57 days, and it already works. That combination is harder to dismiss than it sounds.

From automation promises to actual automation

To understand why Scout lands differently, it helps to know where it came from. The underlying technology is OpenClaw, an open-source computer-use framework created by Peter Steinberger. In November 2025, OpenClaw became widely recognized as being an AI-based virtual assistant, serving as an agentic interface for autonomous workflows across supported services. For many observers, that was the moment AI stopped being a document summarizer and started becoming something that could act in the world.

Microsoft did not simply adopt the concept. The Scout team contributed hardening and fixes back to the OpenClaw repository, a deliberate move that signals long-term commitment to the open-source ecosystem rather than a one-time extraction. Internally, the project was known as Project Lobster. What shipped as Microsoft Scout is, in Microsoft’s own description, “a new personal agent for work, built on OpenClaw and WorkIQ, that understands how you work, uses the tools you already live in, like Teams and Outlook, and proactively handles things like meeting prep, scheduling, conflicts and routine tasks without asking.”

That phrase, “without asking,” carries significant weight. Previous generations of AI assistants operated reactively; they answered when prompted. Scout is designed to be proactive, which is an architectural shift, not a rebranding exercise. The desktop app launched at version 0.22. What makes it notable is not its completeness, but the gap between that version number and the quality of experience it already delivers.

What it does, and how it does it

Scout presents three distinct interaction modes. Chat operates like a capable AI assistant with full Microsoft 365 context. Automations allow recurring tasks to be defined once and executed on a schedule. Co-Create is a workspace environment for building and iterating on artifacts, from presentations to code, with GitHub Copilot integrated natively. That integration is not cosmetic: when Scout lacks the capability to complete a task, it can write the tool it needs. This is the OpenClaw principle applied to an enterprise context.

The use cases that emerged in the first days of access are instructive. Robbert asked Scout to summarize Teams conversations across multiple tenants, identify pending action items, and handle a meeting request buried in the thread. Scout read the relevant messages, checked calendar availability for both parties, scheduled the appointment, and sent a Teams confirmation. No manual steps were required after the initial instruction.

In a second case, CRM pipeline hygiene, which previously required Danny to create a manual export followed by analysis in a separate tool, became a fully automated workflow. Scout opened the browser, navigated to the appropriate CRM view, inspected opportunity records using JavaScript, exported a summary file to SharePoint for archiving, and delivered a structured Teams message identifying which entries were out of compliance. What had previously involved several manual steps in between ran end to end without interruption.

A third example is equally telling. Hakim needed a weekly digest of Copilot and AI news from official Microsoft sources, tech publications, and LinkedIn. Scout assembled the first edition within ten minutes. When it encountered a site that could not be scraped directly, it discovered the site exposed an MCP server endpoint, connected to it autonomously, and registered it as a recurring source. A task that had sat on the backlog for weeks was resolved in half an hour.

The permission model deserves attention. Scout asks for confirmation before each significant action by default. Users can grant standing permissions by category: file reading and writing can be pre-approved, while deletion always requires explicit sign-off. In practice, trust builds gradually and high-stakes actions stay gated. Scout also supports multiple AI models, including Claude Opus and Sonnet, GPT variants up to version 5.4, and Gemini 3.1 Pro, with an auto-routing mode that selects the most appropriate model per query. Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels are respected throughout, so files marked confidential are handled accordingly at every step of a workflow.

What shifts when the assistant starts acting

The most immediate implication is a redefinition of what skilled knowledge work looks like in practice. Tasks that previously required manual coordination, tool-switching, and periodic human judgment are now executable by instruction. This does not eliminate the need for expertise; it relocates it. The value shifts from execution toward problem framing, verification, and deciding what to delegate in the first place.

The second implication is about trust calibration. The moment a browser opens and a cursor moves autonomously across the screen, something changes in how the tool is perceived. It becomes tangible in a way that a text response never does. That shift requires deliberate governance: clear permission boundaries, organizational policies on what Scout is authorized to do on behalf of a user, and some form of audit trail for consequential actions. Organizations that treat this as a future concern are already behind.

Third, the distinction between the current desktop variant and the forthcoming cloud variant matters for enterprise planning. The desktop app requires the machine to be running; automations pause when the device sleeps. The cloud variant, still in limited access at time of writing, runs fully autonomously without a device dependency. For teams thinking about deployment at scale, this difference shapes architecture, licensing strategy, and the realistic scope of what can be delegated.

There is also a broader signal in the development timeline itself. Fifty-seven days from concept to a stable, usable product represents a compression of the build cycle that is difficult to reconcile with traditional software delivery timelines. This suggests AI-assisted development is already accelerating the production of AI tools, a recursive dynamic with compounding effects that practitioners should factor into their planning horizons.

What to watch next

The Microsoft Scout desktop application is version 0.22. The capability is real, and the gaps are real too. Memories from Copilot Chat and automations do not yet persist across reinstalls. Personality settings, which allow Scout to respond in tones ranging from professional to reluctantly helpful, cannot yet be synced to a persistent profile. These are solvable problems, and the development velocity to date suggests they will be addressed quickly.

The decisions worth monitoring: public pricing has not been announced at time of writing; the integration of Scout into the broader Copilot interface as an autopilot mode is confirmed but not yet widely available; and the cloud variant remains in limited access. For organizations beginning to evaluate adoption, the governance question is the one to prioritize now. The capability is already ahead of most internal policies. Defining what Scout is permitted to do, on whose behalf, and with what oversight in place, is not a future problem. It is a current one.

Voor veel mensen was dat het moment waarop AI ophield een documentensamenvatting te zijn en iets werd dat daadwerkelijk kon handelen in de wereld.

Microsoft adopteerde het concept niet simpelweg. Het Scout-team droeg verbeteringen en hardening bij aan de OpenClaw-repository, een bewuste keuze die duidt op een langetermijnverbintenis aan het open-source ecosysteem in plaats van een eenmalige extractie. Intern stond het project bekend als Project Lobster. Wat verscheen als Microsoft Scout is, in Microsofts eigen woorden, “een nieuwe persoonlijke agent voor werk, gebouwd op OpenClaw en WorkIQ, die begrijpt hoe jij werkt, de tools gebruikt die je al dagelijks gebruikt, zoals Teams en Outlook, en proactief zaken afhandelt zoals vergadervoorbereiding, planning, conflicten en routinetaken, zonder te vragen.”

Die zin, “zonder te vragen”, doet er toe. Vorige generaties AI-assistenten werkten reactief; ze antwoordden wanneer erom werd gevraagd. Scout is ontworpen om proactief te zijn, wat een architecturele verschuiving is, geen rebrandingoperatie. De desktopapp verscheen op versie 0.22. Wat het opmerkelijk maakt, is niet de volledigheid, maar het verschil tussen dat versienummer en de kwaliteit van de ervaring die het al levert.

Wat het doet, en hoe het dat doet

Scout biedt drie onderscheiden interactiemodi. Chat werkt als een capabele AI-assistent met volledige Microsoft 365-context. Automations maakt het mogelijk terugkerende taken eenmalig te definiëren en vervolgens op een schema uit te voeren. Co-Create is een werkomgeving voor het bouwen en itereren van producten, van presentaties tot code, met GitHub Copilot native geïntegreerd. Die integratie is niet cosmetisch: als Scout de mogelijkheid mist om een taak te voltooien, kan het de benodigde tool zelf schrijven. Dit is het OpenClaw-principe toegepast op een bedrijfscontext.

De gebruiksscenario’s die in de eerste dagen van toegang opdoken, zijn veelzeggend. Robbert vroeg Scout om Teams-gesprekken over meerdere tenants samen te vatten, openstaande actiepunten te identificeren en een vergaderverzoek af te handelen dat verborgen zat in een thread. Scout las de relevante berichten, controleerde de agendabeschikbaarheid van beide partijen, plantte de afspraak in en stuurde een bevestiging via Teams. Na de initiële instructie waren geen handmatige stappen meer nodig.

In een tweede geval werd CRM-pipelinebeheer, dat voorheen een handmatige export door Danny vereiste gevolgd door analyse in een apart hulpmiddel, een volledig geautomatiseerde workflow. Scout opende de browser, navigeerde naar de juiste CRM-weergave, inspecteeerde opportunity-records via JavaScript, exporteerde een overzichtsbestand naar SharePoint voor archivering en leverde een gestructureerd Teams-bericht met daarin welke vermeldingen niet in orde waren. Wat voorheen meerdere handmatige tussenstappen vergde, liep nu van begin tot eind zonder onderbreking.

Hakim had wekelijks een overzicht nodig van Copilot- en AI-nieuws, afkomstig van officiële Microsoft-bronnen, techpublicaties en LinkedIn. Scout stelde de eerste editie samen binnen tien minuten. Toen het een site tegenkwam die niet direct kon worden uitgelezen, ontdekte het dat de site een MCP-server-eindpunt beschikbaar stelde, maakte daar zelfstandig verbinding mee en registreerde het als een terugkerende bron. Een taak die weken op de achterstand had gestaan, was in een halfuur opgelost.

Het permissiemodel verdient aandacht. Scout vraagt standaard om bevestiging voor elke significante actie. Gebruikers kunnen staande toestemmingen verlenen per categorie: het lezen en schrijven van bestanden kan vooraf worden goedgekeurd, terwijl verwijderen altijd expliciete bevestiging vereist. In de praktijk bouwt vertrouwen zich geleidelijk op en blijven ingrijpende acties geblokkeerd. Scout ondersteunt ook meerdere AI-modellen, waaronder Claude Opus en Sonnet, GPT-varianten tot versie 5.4 en Gemini 3.1 Pro, met een automatische routeringsmodus die per query het meest geschikte model selecteert. Microsoft Purview-gevoeligheidslabels worden gedurende het gehele proces gerespecteerd, zodat vertrouwelijke bestanden in elke stap van een workflow dienovereenkomstig worden behandeld.

Wat er verschuift als de assistent begint te handelen

De meest directe implicatie is een herdefinitie van hoe kenniswerk er in de praktijk uitziet. Taken die voorheen handmatige coördinatie, het wisselen tussen tools en periodieke menselijke beoordeling vereisten, zijn nu uitvoerbaar op instructie. Dit elimineert de behoefte aan expertise niet; het verplaatst haar. De waarde verschuift van uitvoering naar probleemformulering, verificatie en het bepalen wat er in de eerste plaats gedelegeerd moet worden.

De tweede implicatie betreft vertrouwenskalibratie. Op het moment dat een browser opengaat en een cursor autonoom over het scherm beweegt, verandert er iets in hoe het hulpmiddel wordt ervaren. Het wordt tastbaar op een manier die een tekstantwoord nooit wordt. Die verschuiving vereist doelbewust beleid: duidelijke permissiegrenzen, organisatorische richtlijnen over wat Scout namens een gebruiker mag doen, en enige vorm van auditspoor voor consequente acties.

Ten derde is het onderscheid tussen de huidige desktopvariant en de in Frontier beschikbare cloudvariant van belang voor bedrijfsplanning. De desktopapp vereist dat de machine actief is; automations pauzeren wanneer het apparaat in slaapstand gaat. De cloudvariant, op het moment van schrijven nog in beperkte toegang, draait volledig autonoom zonder apparaatafhankelijkheid. Voor teams die nadenken over grootschalige inzet, bepaalt dit verschil de architectuur, de licentiestrategie en de realistische omvang van wat gedelegeerd kan worden.

Er zit ook een breder signaal in de ontwikkelingstijdlijn zelf. Zevenenvijftig dagen van concept tot een stabiel, bruikbaar product vertegenwoordigt een verkorting van de bouwcyclus die moeilijk te rijmen valt met traditionele softwareontwikkelingstermijnen. Dit suggereert dat AI-ondersteunde ontwikkeling de productie van AI-tools zelf al versnelt, een recursieve dynamiek met samengestelde effecten die beoefenaars in hun planningshorizon mee zouden moeten nemen. Iets wat we eerder ook hebben gezien bij de ontwikkeling van Claude Cowork.

Waar op te letten in de komende periode

De desktopvariant van Microsoft Scout is versie 0.22. De mogelijkheden zijn reëel, en de tekortkomingen ook. Geheugen en automations worden nog niet behouden na herinstallatie. Persoonlijkheidsinstellingen, waarmee Scout kan reageren in tonen variërend van professioneel tot tegenzin helpend, kunnen nog niet worden gesynchroniseerd naar een persistent profiel. Dit zijn oplosbare problemen, en de tot nu toe getoonde ontwikkelingssnelheid suggereert dat ze snel worden aangepakt.

De zaken die het waard zijn te volgen: er is op het moment van schrijven nog geen publieke prijs bekendgemaakt; de integratie van Scout in de bredere Copilot-interface als autopilotmodus is bevestigd maar nog niet breed beschikbaar; en de cloudvariant blijft in beperkte toegang. Voor organisaties die adoptie beginnen te evalueren, is de governancevraag degene die nu prioriteit verdient. De mogelijkheden lopen al voor op de meeste interne beleidsregels. Definiëren wat Scout mag doen, namens wie, en met welk toezicht op zijn plaats, is geen toekomstig probleem. Het is een huidig probleem.
