backward. From as early as I can remember, everything I was taught, shown by culture, or watched as an example suggested that the measure of a good life was how much you could fit into it. More work, better opportunities, more attention. Making more things happen to prove that you’re progressing, or quietly suffering with the thought that you’re lost and don’t have any value.

Living at high speed and packing in as much as you can feels exciting. It’s the buzz of keeping it all together and pushing your limits that gets used to justify the exhaustion and gradual loss of your sense of self. But if you look deeper, you can see that the motivation often comes from fear, not excitement. It’s the fear of not being enough, not having value, or not having a purpose.

That’s why you can have a full calendar and still feel empty. You can be making lots of money but still feel tense all the time. People can reach out to you often but, for some reason, there’s always that part of you that never lets you feel wanted.

At some point, you have to ask yourself what’s important.

Is it how much you can do, or how you want to feel while you’re doing it?

That question has become more important to me as I’ve gotten older. Society has entered a phase where everything demands an immediate response, and we’re constantly shown reasons to care, react, compare, decide, worry, or feel outraged. Even when we’re doing our best to relax, something finds a way to ask for our attention every few seconds.

So I’ve started thinking about calm as a kind of wealth.

Not immediately reaching for your phone in the morning is wealth. Spending time with people who make your body relax is wealth. Being able to say no without explaining yourself is wealth. Sitting somewhere beautiful and realizing you haven’t thought about checking your email is wealth. Allowing yourself to be here, in your body, in touch with the present moment, without feeling like you’re late for something is wealth.

None of this looks impressive from the outside, which is why people don’t focus on it. But once you switch your focus from doing what looks good from the outside to doing what feels good on the inside, everything changes.

You notice which parts of your life are eating you and which parts are feeding you. Your attention becomes something sacred instead of something for sale. You’re able to freely exist in your own life without feeling like you’re doing something wrong.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to believe that real success isn’t about how much money you stack, how big your status becomes, or how much people like you. It’s about not caring about any of that stuff, letting go of the story society sold us about how we should live, and existing freely, peacefully, and calmly on our own terms and in our own time.

Calm is the new currency because simply existing is expensive now.

Spend yours like you know what it’s worth.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

If this resonated with you, my upcoming book, The Quiet Age: Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World, goes much deeper into this idea.

It’s about stepping out of urgency, protecting your attention, trusting yourself more deeply, and building a life that feels calm on the inside—not just impressive from the outside.

When you preorder now, you’ll get free access ($197 value) to the Calm & Clarity Reset that Yung Pueblo and I created. 21 daily videos to help you start living your life of calm.

There are versions of you that still live in your mind long after they’ve stopped being true.

Maybe you think of yourself as someone who isn’t confident, not good enough, or doesn’t belong around people you see as more successful than you. You might think of yourself as unattractive, uninteresting, or unlovable.

These thoughts about who we are get coded into us from experiences we have early in our lives. Since they’ve had a long time to grow roots, they can stick with us for years.

When our perception is shaped this way, our mind becomes predisposed to believe a story about who we are, even though the reason we believe it is long past. So we end up walking through life, into new situations, carrying old conclusions.

You assume you’ll fail because you failed once before. Maybe you doubt yourself because someone once doubted you. Or perhaps you’re scared you’ll be rejected because you were rejected years ago.

The truth is that the negative thoughts you have about your value, worth, or capacity for great things aren’t the truth about you.

They don’t describe who you are today.

They describe a way you thought about yourself in the past.

This is one of the reasons stillness is so valuable. Slowing down creates space in the constant movement of life. This helps you start seeing the difference between what’s real in this moment and what your history is telling you.

You can notice a thought like, I’m not capable of this, and ask: Is that actually true today?

You can think people won’t accept you, and wonder: Is that reality, or is that an old fear trying to protect me?

You can catch yourself thinking, This is just who I am, and realize that maybe it’s only who you were in the past.

Pausing and making this distinction can change everything.

You don’t have to keep playing by the rules of your old thoughts about who you are. When one of those mental stories appears, you can recognize it for the outdated information it is and return to the person who is standing here today.

Take a moment to remember what you’ve learned, how you’ve grown, and all the ways you think, speak, and act differently than you once did.

Your awareness has grown. Your wisdom has grown. Your self-respect has grown.

Remember: your past helped shape you, but it doesn’t get to define your future.

Let who you are today have the final word.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

If this resonated with you, my upcoming book, The Quiet Age: Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World, was written for this exact kind of inner work.

It’s about slowing down enough to see yourself clearly, separating who you are today from the stories your past taught you to believe, and learning to trust the quieter voice underneath all that old noise.

The Quiet Age is a guide for letting go of outdated patterns, reconnecting with your intuition, and moving through life with more clarity, self-trust, and peace.

Preorder now and get Yung Pueblo and my 21-day Calm & Clarity course for FREE ($197 value) for a limited time.

Preorder & Get Course

Subscribe now

Share

Upgrade

The Quieter Your Mind, The Louder The Beauty

Why slowing down changes how you experience your life

Cory Allen

The quieter your mind gets, the louder the beauty becomes.

Most of us spend our days moving through life with so much mental noise that we barely notice how much is already here.

We’re thinking about what happened yesterday, what needs to happen tomorrow, what someone meant by what they said, what we should be doing, what we might be missing, and what could go wrong next.

Meanwhile, life keeps happening quietly around us.

Light moves across the wall. Someone you love laughs in the next room. The wind shifts. A bird lands nearby. Your coffee warms your hands. Your body breathes on its own.

None of these things are particularly dramatic, which is exactly why they’re so easy to miss.

We tend to think beauty needs to be extraordinary to get our attention. But often, the problem isn’t that life has stopped being beautiful.

It’s that our minds have become too loud to notice.

When you slow down, you begin to experience ordinary things with more depth. A walk feels different when you aren’t rushing because you finally notice everything happening around you. Conversations change when you’re actually listening because you don’t just hear their words, you begin to hear where they’re coming from. Meals become more satisfying when you truly taste them instead of tasting your expectation of them.

When you experience this, nothing outside of you has changed.

Your attention did. And awareness has a way of illuminating even the most ordinary things.

This is one of the reasons I value quiet so much. Quiet doesn’t take you out of your life. It returns you to it, creates space, and makes the subtle richness of your existence become visible again.

You notice what feels good, feel gratitude for being alive, receive the abundance of the present moment, and relax fully into yourself.

And that’s the trick. There’s nothing to gain, no status to reach, no magic amount of money you can accumulate that will finally make you happy, and no one that you have to become.

You just have to loosen your grip on all the urgency, become present enough to experience what is already here, and enjoy this moment in which you are alive and full of beautiful energy.

Sure, there will always be problems to solve, challenges to overcome, tension that stresses you out, and things that weigh heavily on your heart.

But your life isn’t happening in that noise.

It’s happening underneath it.

You just have to become quiet enough to notice.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

–

If this newsletter resonated with you, my upcoming book, The Quiet Age: resentment can feel like a form of justice.

When someone hurts, disappoints, or disrespects you, it’s natural for a part of you to keep that anger alive. We do this because, as we feel the burning of that emotion inside us, it can, in some way, feel like it’s punishing the person who hurt us.

Keeping the feeling alive also makes it feel like they aren’t getting away with it. They caused the feeling, and there’s a part of you that thinks if you just let it go, they’ll never have to take accountability for their actions.

These feelings are valid. But it’s simply not how people work.

The person who caused the feeling you’re carrying around is simply going on with their life. They’re eating dinner, answering emails, making plans, and sleeping through the night, and have most likely either forgotten about your interaction altogether or reframed it to justify their actions.

Meanwhile, you’re replaying the moment and feeling the burn of the emotional weight. You’re allowing something that happened in the past to keep influencing your mind in the present.

Resentment promises protection, but it just becomes another form of pain.

A pain that lives within you. And as it simmers, it influences your emotions and thoughts. That means that energy is subtly carried into your healthy relationships or moments of self-reflection.

Allowing the pain that someone else caused you in the past to steal away your joy and abundance in the present isn’t fair. Not to you, or the people around you.

That’s why letting go is so powerful. It doesn’t mean that you forgive the person or give them access to you again. It means that you refuse to carry their pain for them.

Because at the end of the day, people who inflict pain upon others do so because they are hurting. Offloading the charge of their suffering onto others provides temporary relief. So they do it often. But their pain always recharges and returns.

Carrying their suffering isn’t your responsibility. You can release the anger while creating a new boundary. You can let go of your resentment while remembering what you learned. You can keep living freely without allowing them back into your life.

Don’t carry what isn’t yours. Expect respect. And never hold on to glowing embers of resentment when it’s your hand that’s getting burned.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

_

If this resonated with you, my upcoming book, The Quiet Age: Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World, is about learning how to release what keeps disturbing your inner life without abandoning your boundaries or yourself. It’s a meditative companion for letting go of emotional weight, protecting your peace, and creating enough quiet to hear what you truly need.

When you preorder, you’ll get FREE access to Yung Pueblo and my 21-day Calm & Clarity Reset ($197 value).
<p class="button-wrapper" But we rarely think about where we are asking this question from. Sometimes we ask it out of fear. And sometimes we ask it from a place of trust.

The words may be the same, but the mindset behind them changes everything. When you ask from a place of fear, you’re often seeking external validation. You want the answer to remove your discomfort. When you ask from a place of trust, it comes from a place of curiosity. You’re grounded in yourself, and even though you don’t know what’s next, you trust you’ll be able to listen, respond, and find your way.

You don’t want the answer to relieve discomfort. You want it because you’re excited about what might happen next and you’re looking forward to the journey. Leaning into this way of thinking is freeing and empowering, but it’s important to stay balanced.

This is where humility comes in. We often confuse humility with making ourselves smaller or doubting ourselves. But that’s not humility. It simply means remembering that you don’t know everything, can’t control everything, and most importantly, you don’t need to.

You can trust yourself without believing you’re always right.

In fact, I rarely think I have the final answer. I think I have a perspective, with limited information, and am always open to learning more. I find that moving through life like this keeps me from making false assumptions while opening access to new ways of thinking I couldn’t have encountered if my mind was permanently made up.

The balance I come back to is simple. I trust myself, but I’m always teachable.

That’s the dosage of humility that feels healthy to me: enough to keep my ego from turning confidence into certainty, but not so much that my humility becomes self-doubt.

You can trust what’s true to you in the present moment, while still being able to discover that you were wrong. That happens to me often. Because trusting yourself isn’t about always being right. It’s about listening to your intuition, while staying open to new information, and doing so from an abundant mindset instead of a fear-based one. Maybe it’s just your nervous system asking you to slow down and listen.

I’ve been thinking about this lately because I’ve noticed that most people are so quick to judge their own minds. The second they start replaying a conversation, worrying about a decision, or projecting possible outcomes, they call it overthinking, and often feel down on themselves for doing so. But no one tells us that what we often call overthinking is really a signal from the body that the mind isn’t settled enough to hear.

That doesn’t mean all of your thoughts, fears, and anxious stories are true. It just means that something in you is asking for attention, grounding, or clarity. It’s a powerful form of self-awareness that is often obscured by the force of our minds.

Overthinking happens when the body goes into a kind of intellectual survival mode. It tries to create certainty in the face of mental overwhelm by seeking the perfect answer, plan, or response, with the hope that controlling or predicting everything accurately will finally let your nervous system relax.

But peace never comes from thinking harder. It comes from slowing down enough to hear what’s happening underneath your thinking. In other words, it’s about pausing and listening to what’s arising in your body instead of staying caught inside the noise of your mind.

Maybe what you’re feeling is a boundary that you haven’t honored or a truth you’ve been avoiding. Maybe you’re exhausted, and your thoughts are getting louder because your capacity is getting lower. Maybe, and most likely, your body noticed something your mind is still trying to rationalize. Maybe you don’t need to solve everything. Maybe you need water, rest, a walk, a quiet room, and a moment of stillness with yourself.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to listen more and more to what I feel, not just emotionally, but in my nervous system. And it’s been a transformative source of wisdom. So much so that many of the pieces in my upcoming book focus on that practice.

So, the next time your mind goes into overdrive, don’t panic. And definitely don’t shame yourself for being overwhelmed. Instead, pause and ask, “What is my nervous system trying to tell me?” Take a deep breath and gently ask what needs to be heard.

Then listen through the body. Notice your chest, stomach, jaw, breath, and shoulders. Feel where you are bracing. Notice what softens when you tell yourself the truth. Notice how, when you physically relax, you begin to see the connection between your felt sense of the world and your mental one.

This is how you begin to build trust with yourself and start making your mind work for you, instead of you working for it.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

-

If this newsletter resonated with you, my upcoming book, The Quiet Age: Creating a Calm Life in a Chaotic World, was written for this exact feeling. Instead of looking at it clearly, we look away, and then wonder why the pain keeps following us around.

We ignore, numb, explain away, and rationalize. We lean harder into habits that quiet the noise without clearing it. When a relationship consistently drains us, we make excuses or blame ourselves. When we’re not comfortable relaxing, because stillness might make us slow down enough to feel what we’re running from, we say it’s because we have too much to do and not enough time.

But ignoring our suffering doesn’t make it go away. It just sends its roots deeper into our bodies and minds. And the deeper the roots go, the stronger they get, and the more they start to touch every part of our lives.

It’s a weird irony that instead of being honest with ourselves and acknowledging the truth, we’d rather hide it and suffer much longer and harder instead.

I want to linger on this irony for a moment. Let’s see what’s so bad about looking reality straight in the face. Let’s see if all that denial, numbness, and anxiety is worth the voluntary self-ignorance.

Let’s say you have a friend you’ve known for years. Over the past few years, they’ve become more professionally successful, and they’ve been in touch less. You notice you’re always the one reaching out. When they respond, it’s short and noncommittal. Then one day, they stop responding to your texts at all.

It’s tempting to make excuses. Maybe they’re too busy with their flourishing career to get back to you, but they still consider you a friend. Or maybe you turn the blame on yourself and cling to the mental story that you’ve changed in a way they don’t like. Then maybe you feel anger, imagining that they now think they’re too good for you.

You can run with these stories for weeks or months, telling yourself things are still fine while feeling hurt, frustrated, and devalued every time you think about it. You keep trying to rationalize reality, but the truth is already there.

Their lack of response is the response.

That doesn’t mean you need to make them wrong, turn them into a villain, or create a dramatic story around it. It simply means you can acknowledge that, for whatever reason, they aren’t communicating with you anymore. You reached out in good faith. You did what you could. You left the ball in their court.

Now you can stop carrying the whole thing by yourself.

We go through situations like this again and again, in relationships, in work, and in the moments when our own intuition is trying to tell us something we’re not quite ready to hear.

The practice is simple, even when it isn’t easy. Look clearly at what’s actually happening. Name it without the story around it. Let the truth be uncomfortable for a moment instead of letting avoidance be uncomfortable for months.

When you do that consistently, the weight you’ve been carrying starts to lift. Not because your life became easier, but because you stopped adding the extra burden of pretending, delaying, and denying.

That’s where peace actually lives.

Not in a perfect life. In an honest one.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

Subscribe now

Share

Upgrade

A Peaceful Life Is Built From A Thousand Quiet Boundaries

How to create a calm life in small daily moments

Cory Allen

When I think about what separates people who feel peaceful from those who are constantly tense and depleted, it rarely comes down to the big stuff.

Work, relationships, and life all come with an inherent amount of stress. And stress is relative. By that I mean that we all carry our own stress, and since we are biased toward our own suffering, we often feel like it is worse or more urgent than other people’s. When really, we’re all feeling the same thing.

No matter if someone is peaceful or tense, the general weight of human stress they are holding is relatively similar, so that’s not where the difference is. More often, the answer lives in the texture of a peaceful person’s daily life. All the microscopic moments where they choose to slow down, let go, look at the big picture, focus on what they can control, and lead with compassion as much as possible.

These things aren’t performative. They are invisible choices made in small moments throughout the day. They’re subtle internal shifts that redirect the flow of your energy and mindset.

Like when you’re about to say yes to something and your body tenses with resistance. You notice that feeling, listen to it, and say no instead. Or when you feel the impulse to respond in a conversation with anger, sense the arising tension, choose to let it go, and express mindful articulation instead of blind emotion. It’s noticing when a specific person is draining you, and deciding to spend a little less time around them. It’s feeling the pull of a habit that numbs you and choosing what nourishes you instead. Or even becoming aware that your breathing has become short and resetting it with a long, deep breath.

After years of practice, I’ve come to believe that peace is less of a feeling and more of a way of being. It’s a practice of paying attention to what creates inner tension, and slowly, imperfectly learning to create a boundary that protects you from absorbing that tension.

Of course, just because this is simple doesn’t mean it’s easy. Life is constantly going to hit you with stress and surprise tension. Even your own mind will generate mental stories that start weighing on you. It can be hard to consistently protect your inner life, but that’s why it’s called a practice. We just keep slowing down, working at it, and getting a little better each day.

The people who feel peaceful aren’t the ones who have finally found a life without difficulty or stress. They are the ones who got quiet enough to notice what was costing them their calm and were honest enough with themselves to do something about it. One small decision at a time, they chose to slow down, let go, act in alignment with their values, and trust their intuition, even when it went unnoticed by everyone else.

Peace is building a thousand quiet boundaries.

Nobody can see them building. But eventually, everyone can feel the result.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

-

A lot of what we call “stress” isn’t just circumstance. But more than anything, you feel a special kind of energy.

When you’ve been doing real work on your inner life, an internal breathing room opens up, and that space is filled with this alive feeling of life force that starts to carry you everywhere you go. You feel it in your toes, fingertips, and heart. You feel it beaming out of your eyes when you talk.

Early on, it can almost be disorienting when it happens because you aren’t used to moving through life without heaviness and with this kind of electricity blossoming within you. In time, you settle into living with the feeling and start flowing with it.

At this stage of growth, you start to notice that things that used to drain you don’t pull you down in the same way. Situations that used to make you spiral effortlessly flow right through you. You feel more like yourself than you have, and that feeling makes you wonder how much more might be possible.

And this energetic charge doesn’t boost only parts of you. It also boosts things that might not need boosting. Like your ego. So, there’s a period where you start feeling really good about yourself. You might feed on how people react to your new charisma. Maybe you get a little blinded by your own light now and then. That’s all okay, it’s just a part of recentering after leveling up. As long as you keep doing the work to realign, of course.

All of this momentum is real and worth celebrating. It means you’re getting to a deeper level of self-understanding, awareness, courage, and willingness to see reality clearly.

But here’s something I want you to remember for when that wave of energy finally settles. Because it will.

Everything in life moves in rhythms. Energy expands and contracts.

The tide of the ocean always goes out, but that doesn’t mean it stops being the ocean.

The same is true for the life force that carries you forward in those open, flowing, “everything feels possible” moments. That energy will fade, but it doesn’t mean you are on the wrong track. It means that energy is resting, integrating, and gathering itself for its return.

So when the lull comes, and it will come, don’t interpret it as a failure, regression, or evidence that your growth wasn’t real. That’s a mistake far too many people make. They feel the contraction and immediately assume something is wrong, that they’ve lost their progress, that they were deluding themselves, or need to go back to square one.

But that’s not what’s happening. What’s happening is that the wave of energy is pulling back so it can build again. And this time, when it rises, it will do so with more nuance, maturity, and subtle energy. That’s an important distinction to make. Because a big wave rises fast and crashes fast. But a deep, slow rising wave ripples for a long time and carries you much further into the future.

When this starts happening, it means you’re getting to the stage where your inner work is becoming less of a practice and more of something you simply are. And from here, the only thing you have to do when the wave falls is remember that it will always rise again.

So if you’re resting between waves right now, remember that you’re still getting closer to the other shore. Even if you can’t feel yourself moving.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

-

One of the hardest parts of growth is what happens after the momentum fades. The energy settles, the clarity softens, and many people begin to wonder if they’ve lost their progress. But often, nothing is wrong. You’re simply moving through another season of being human.

Therapy can provide support during those quieter periods, helping you stay connected to yourself even when life feels uncertain or your inner momentum slows down. Sometimes having a space to reflect, process, and be understood can help you remember that growth doesn’t disappear simply because it becomes less visible.

If you’ve been wanting support for your own inner work, BetterHelp can help.

Visit BetterHelp.com/heycory today to get 10% off your first month.

Sponsored by BetterHelp.

Upgrade

Subscribe now

Share

<div class="instagram-embed-wrap" data-attrs="{"instagram_id":"DZxV8BrlmlR","title":"Cory Allen on Instagram: \"Peace doesn't arrive all at once. They think vulnerability is being completely unfiltered, speaking your truth no matter what, and letting every thought be known. But I’ve come to think that those things are often confused with one another.

In my experience, being vulnerable isn’t saying whatever you’re thinking. In fact, some of the least vulnerable people I’ve met are incredibly expressive. They’ll tell you their opinions, explain what’s wrong with a situation, tell you how they feel about someone else, or openly share their perspective on almost anything. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, but it isn’t vulnerability.

Vulnerability has a different feeling to it.

It’s the moment you say something that you would rather keep hidden.

It’s admitting you’re hurt when you’d rather appear unaffected. It’s acknowledging you’re struggling when you’d rather appear strong. It’s letting someone see your uncertainty when you’d much rather be seen as confident.

That’s why vulnerability feels uncomfortable. It asks us to step outside of the image we’re trying to maintain.

Most of us spend a surprising amount of energy protecting that image. We want to be liked. We want to be respected. We want to appear competent, emotionally stable, and in control. None of this makes us shallow or dishonest. It’s just part of being human. We all develop ways of protecting ourselves as we move through life.

The problem is that the same protections that help us feel safe can also make it difficult to connect.

When every conversation stays at the level of ideas, opinions, accomplishments, or carefully managed stories, people may learn things about us, but they don’t necessarily feel close to us. There’s a difference between being known and being understood.

Real connection happens when the protective layers soften for a moment.

Maybe someone admits they’re scared about something. Maybe they acknowledge they’re lonely. Maybe they reveal a disappointment they’ve been carrying quietly. Maybe they say something they’ve rehearsed in their head a hundred times but never felt safe enough to share.

When those moments happen, the conversation changes.

You can feel it.

The energy in the room shifts because something real has entered the space.

What makes vulnerability so powerful isn’t that people are drawn to weakness. It’s that people are drawn to honesty. Beneath all of our roles, achievements, identities, and carefully constructed presentations, there’s a part of us that wants to be seen as we are. When someone else allows themselves to be seen in that way, it often permits us to do the same.

That’s why vulnerability creates intimacy. Not because it impresses people, but because it dissolves the distance that people unconsciously maintain between one another.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we should walk around sharing everything with everyone we meet. Vulnerability still needs discernment. Trust matters. Context matters. Chaotically sharing your deepest feelings with the wrong people at the wrong times is an act of desperation, not connection.

But I do think it’s worth paying attention to the moments when something inside you wants to be expressed and you immediately move to protect it. Sometimes that instinct is appropriate. Other times, it’s simply a habit of creating distance so you can keep managing how others perceive you.

When the time, person, and feeling are right, and you do share that vulnerable truth, you’ll find the connection you’ve been hoping for.

Because most people aren’t looking for perfection in others.

They’re looking for a real connection.

Sending love and slowness,

Cory

-

Most people aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for connection.

The challenge is that connection requires honesty, and honesty often asks us to acknowledge things we’d rather avoid. The fears we don’t talk about. The emotions we keep managing. The parts of ourselves we try to hide behind being busy, capable, or in control.

Therapy offers a space to explore those parts with curiosity and care. Something familiar is no longer there, and we can’t help but focus on what is missing from our lives.

That makes sense. Human beings are naturally attached to what feels known. Familiarity creates a sense of stability, which in turn creates a sense of safety. Even when the situation isn’t ideal, there’s great comfort in knowing we’ll have something we can count on tomorrow.

The problem is that life isn’t interested in staying the same.

Everything changes constantly.

Seasons shift. Culture morphs. People evolve.

But subtle things are always changing, too. Your interests and priorities change. The conversations that excite you change. What seemed like the most important thing in the world to you at twenty is nothing but a memory. Even your understanding of yourself is constantly evolving, whether you notice it or not.

Yet many of us spend much of our energy trying to hold life still. We cling to identities, relationships, routines, and expectations because we believe we need them to make our lives feel stable. And they do for a while, but eventually life moves on again, as it always does.

In Buddhist philosophy, this is called impermanence. Everything is changing, forever.

When I first read about this idea a few decades ago, I initially took it somewhat pessimistically. Like, okay, great, nothing lasts, everything fades away and disappears from now until the end of time, when time itself eventually runs out.

While there is some truth in that observation, it’s only half the story.

One day, while I was thinking about impermanence, it hit me that for there to always be things disappearing, then there must also always be things coming into existence to fill the space of what’s gone.

In other words, every ending makes room for a new beginning. Every version of you that fades makes space for a wiser, more aligned you to emerge. New friendships, interests, opportunities, and understandings develop. Things we can’t imagine are always slowly entering our lives and reshaping them.

But we’re often so focused on what’s leaving our lives that we miss the beautiful things that are arriving.

The most meaningful parts of my life were things I never planned. Relationships I couldn’t have predicted changed me for the better, forever. Experiences I wasn’t looking for helped me understand what it truly means to be alive. Insights I’ve had that shaped my core view of life were only possible because something faded away first.

If life had remained exactly as it was, the most important parts of my life would have never happened. It doesn’t mean it was easy, but it was always worth the discomfort of growth.

After going through enough of these changes and seeing them play out for the better, I realized that change isn’t something to fear.

It’s an invitation. An opportunity to take life lightly, flow with the moving parts of being, and most importantly, shift your mindset to see possibilities in the unknown instead of fear.

Because when you do that, you begin receiving life like an artist. You see deeply, noticing potential on the horizon of your future that you wouldn’t have been able to see if you were busy looking backwards.

Seeing life like this is not only how you let go of the fear of change and reliance on the numbing familiar. It’s how you learn to take part in the very arising of life itself.

Sending love and slowness,

Cory

-

Sometimes the hardest part of change isn’t what we’re losing. It’s letting go of the familiar long enough to discover what’s trying to emerge. We start doing something because it feels useful or exciting at the time, and then we simply keep doing it. A hobby becomes a part of our routine, a relationship becomes a part of our life, a job becomes a part of our identity, and a way of thinking becomes our worldview. Before long, we stop seeing these things as choices we’ve made and start seeing them as fixed parts of who we are.

The strange thing is that much of what we identify ourselves with wasn’t consciously chosen in the first place. The universe has a way of tricking us into inheriting our sense of self through random chance. We stumble into interests. We’re influenced by our environment, family, circumstances, or versions of ourselves from years ago. Then we repeat these patterns until they become so familiar that they feel they are a part of us.

This is one of the reasons people stay in situations that no longer serve them. They continue investing energy into things they’ve outgrown because they’ve simply got into the habit of thinking it’s who they are. It can be difficult to recognize when something that once felt meaningful slowly becomes draining.

This happened to me. I started writing music when I was a teenager and went on to compose over a dozen albums. So, for the majority of my life, I had identified myself as someone who had to create music all the time. That’s how people knew me, too. When I hadn’t seen someone in a while, they’d always ask, “How’s the music going? When are you putting out a new record?” When I was in my late 30s, I was already a successful podcaster and had published a book through Penguin Random House, but I still always felt guilty that I wasn’t making much music.

One day, as I was sitting down to create sounds out of obligation, rather than passion, I paused and asked myself what I was doing. I thought about it and realized I was still holding on to this idea of being a musician when really, I wanted to be an author. So in that moment, I decided to spend all the time I would normally put into messing around with sounds into writing. It was then that I decided to start posting one thought a day on Instagram. Just for fun, and as a creative practice. Less than six months later, my page blew up, my account went viral, and well, here we are.

That experience was an important lesson. Now, when I start feeling drained from something in my life that once felt meaningful, I ask myself a few simple questions:

Is this feeding me anymore?

Does it make my world feel larger or smaller?

Does this create energy or drain it?

Asking these questions is a useful way to get clear on where you are today, and it helps keep you from getting trapped in a past sense of self. The moment you start asking these questions, you open up a space within you that contains the possibility of change. It disrupts the patterns of doing out of obligation and makes you see the present moment with clear eyes.

There can be fear in the process of letting go of a familiar pattern because it feels like you’re letting go of a piece of yourself. But in reality, you’re not really leaving something behind. You’re just making room for a more current version of you to emerge. That’s fine because you aren’t doing it for them. You’re doing it for you.

One of the odd things about being human is that we can look completely normal on the outside while experiencing something entirely different on the inside. A person can be productive, social, smiling, replying to messages, showing up, and making plans while feeling emotionally exhausted, disconnected, overwhelmed, or weighed down by something they can’t explain.

Living with this duality is strange because most of us are carrying far more than we let the world see. And we don’t even know why we are doing it.

Part of it is instinctual. Human beings naturally hide vulnerability because deep down, we associate struggle with weakness or danger. We learn how to function when we’re depleted and perform “okayness” because we don’t want to look fragile, emotional, or unstable. So we keep moving with a smile while feeling drained in ways we don’t talk about.

This is why so many of us feel beyond burned out, unable to find joy in the things we used to, and like we are watching our lives go by rather than participating in them.

Constantly being “on” is not sustainable.

Being engaged, visible, and ambitious is only half of being human. The other half is private. It’s about quiet, reflection, rest, emotional processing, and creating enough space to reconnect with yourself again.

The problem is that many people feel guilty for needing that space.

Modern life rewards visibility and constant participation. There’s a pressure to always be available, responsive, and emotionally steady. So when someone pulls back and goes quiet for a little while, maybe cancels some plans or needs more rest than usual, it can feel like something is wrong.

The truth is that intentionally spending time recharging isn’t wrong, and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. It’s a healthy response to feeling emotionally exhausted or overstimulated.

Sometimes you need a break from carrying too much, being oversaturated with noise, or having your nervous system fried through overstimulation. Sometimes you need to stop worrying about what other people think and give yourself the time you need to feel like yourself again.

Stop giving energy you don’t have. Forget about being productive sometimes. Simply exist in your own life without any explanation. When you feel the need, just let yourself marinate in the quiet stillness of the present moment.

Then, when you feel ready, you can return to the natural pace of your life, with more “you” energy than ever before.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

A lot of people spend years pushing through emotional exhaustion because they think needing rest, support, or space means something is wrong with them. But taking care of your mental health is not weakness. It’s part of being human. If someone becomes quiet, distant, or irritated, your nervous system can react instantly. Your body tightens, your heart rate goes up, and you start wondering if you did something wrong.

This is especially common for people who grew up in emotionally unpredictable environments. When you spend enough time around instability, criticism, or emotional inconsistency, you learn to become hyper-aware of other people’s emotional states as a form of self-protection. Tracking other people’s moods makes you feel safe because you feel prepared for conflict.

Over time, this creates a habit of emotional absorption.

You stop simply noticing other people’s emotions and start taking them on. Their stress becomes your stress, their frustration becomes your anxiety, and their bad mood becomes something you feel you need to fix so you can relax again.

Living like this is exhausting and not fair to you or them. And it doesn’t have to be that way.

Remember that caring about people and carrying people are not the same thing.

You can support someone without becoming consumed by their emotional state. You can listen deeply without becoming performative. You can care about their pain without making it your responsibility to regulate them.

This doesn’t mean becoming cold, detached, or dismissive. It means learning how to stay connected to yourself while someone else is experiencing something difficult.

That’s a very different kind of presence.

A healthier kind of support often looks much calmer than people expect. Instead of trying to fix or solve someone’s emotions, you simply stay grounded. You breathe, listen, and allow the other person to have their experience without making it about you.

Ironically, this groundedness makes you more emotionally available and able to support a struggling person in an authentic way that helps them instead of just calming your anxious internal reaction.

People don’t need or want you to absorb their emotions. They want you to be present with them while they are moving through a challenging moment. They don’t want you to fix them. They want you to hear them, validate their experience, and let them know they aren’t facing life alone.

The next time you notice yourself feeling anxious because someone else is upset, pause for a moment before reacting. Notice your elevated heart rate, anxiety, and your shift to survival mode. Then take a breath, relax your shoulders, and remind yourself that someone else experiencing emotions doesn’t mean that you’re in danger or need to fix something.

Just be there, stay rooted in your own energy, and remember that your calm, attentive openness is far more supportive and healing than any “solution” you could offer.

Sending love and slowness,
Cory

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is stop carrying emotional weight that was never yours to begin with. I’ve partnered with BetterHelp because I believe asking for support is a form of self-respect, one that we all deserve.

Visit BetterHelp.com/heycory to get 10% off.
Sponsored by BetterHelp.

Most people imagine peace as something that lives in the future. Like you’re always on the cusp of feeling it, but it never quite arrives. Over time, we get hope fatigue and stop believing peace is something we can actually experience.

So we make excuses for why our lives aren’t peaceful and tell ourselves we’ll feel it someday, while not entirely believing that is true. We tell ourselves we’ll feel peace when the stress settles down, the uncertainty clears, or everyone around us finally behaves more like we wish they would.

But peace doesn’t arrive like that. It’s something we slowly build through small internal shifts that change the way we experience everyday life. A lot of it comes from learning what no longer deserves access to your energy, attention, and nervous system.

Peace is not just a feeling of calm. It’s a way of living built through small acts of self-protection.

Here, I’m going to share five ways to protect your peace that will actually shift the energy in your life today.

Peace feels like saying no without needing to explain yourself.

So many people exhaust themselves trying to make their boundaries emotionally acceptable to everyone around them before allowing themselves to trust their own needs. We over-explain because we want understanding, agreement, or permission. The truth is, not every decision requires a defense. Sometimes, a simple and honest “I can’t” or “I’m not feeling that right now” is enough. The more comfortable you become with allowing your boundaries to exist without excessive explanation, the lighter life starts to feel.

Peace feels like not responding to everything right away.

Modern life has trained us into a constant state of reaction where every message, notification, opinion, and emotional shift feels urgent. Yet we forget that urgency and importance are not the same thing. You do not need to attend to every single thing the second it appears. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is pause before responding. Give yourself a second to breathe, think clearly, and reconnect with yourself before giving away your energy.

Peace feels like leaving behind what drains your energy every time.

Your body notices patterns long before your mind is willing to admit them. Certain environments, habits, conversations, and relationships leave you feeling heavy or tense every single time, yet many people continue tolerating them simply because they’re familiar. But familiarity does not always mean alignment. Sometimes peace begins the moment you stop trying to force yourself to adapt to things your nervous system has already recognized as unhealthy.

We want to be understood correctly. We want people to see our intentions accurately, think well of us, and interpret us in a way that feels fair and aligned with who we believe ourselves to be.

Because of this, many of us spend an incredible amount of energy managing perception without even realizing it. We soften parts of our personality, hold back honest thoughts, over-explain ourselves, or constantly monitor how others are responding to us in conversation. We replay interactions in our minds afterward, searching for signs that we may have been misunderstood or seen negatively.

Over time, this creates a subtle but exhausting form of tension because we stop simply living and start filtering ourselves through imagined interpretations. Instead of being present, we become occupied with managing how we exist in the minds of other people.

What’s important to notice is that much of this suffering is built on projection. We create mental stories about what people think of us, often with very little real evidence, and then emotionally react to those stories as if they were facts. The mind becomes consumed with trying to correct, anticipate, or control perception, even though other people’s interpretations will never be fully within our control to begin with.

A shift happens when you start noticing this process. You realize how much energy has been spent trying to manage experiences that can’t actually be managed at all. People will always interpret you through the lens of their own emotions, history, expectations, insecurities, and assumptions. Even when your intentions are sincere, you may still be misunderstood or misrepresented sometimes. That’s part of being human.

But this becomes much less painful when you stop placing your entire sense of self inside someone else’s interpretation of you.

A relationship, an idea, an expectation, a habit, or a version of ourselves. It feels heavy because we’ve grown to believe that weight is built into the thing itself.

But most of the time, the weight only feels that way because we decided to make it that heavy by assigning importance.

We give things meaning through repetition, attention, and emotional investment. We mistake our habits for who we are, attach stories to outcomes, and build identities around roles, relationships, and experiences.

Over time, what started as neutral begins to feel essential.

Not because it is, but because we made it that way.

This is why letting go can feel like losing something real. You’re not just releasing the thing itself. You’re releasing the meaning you built around it. And that’s the part that feels deeply connected to who you are.

But once you start to see this clearly, you begin to notice that meaning isn’t something you’re obligated to carry forever. Since it’s something you created, it means that it’s something you can destroy.

Of course, that doesn’t mean pretending things don’t matter, bypassing emotion, or indulging in detachment. It simply means recognizing that the intensity you feel is often coming from the story attached to the experience, not the experience itself.

When you start to see that, you gain space.

Instead of trying to force yourself to let go, you can start by gently questioning what you’re holding on to.
