The Black Luminaries : The Heartbeat of History

Astrologers often point to the cycles of the outer planets to describe periods of historical development. Yet these cycles themselves form part of a much larger pattern—one in which individual consciousness is called to interact with world consciousness, particularly at moments when society is challenged to reflect its highest ideals.

The concept of the Black Luminaries originated in France in the early 20th century with the noted astrologer Dom Neroman (Pierre Rougié). They consist of the Black Moon at the lunar apogee—both Mean and True—and its polarity point, Priapus. The other Black Luminary is the Black Sun at the aphelion, together with its polarity point, the Diamond.

French astrologer Jean Carteret later interpreted the dialectical interaction of these points within the context of the post-structuralist and symbolic astrology that developed during the 1960s and 1970s. He also collaborated with Dutch astrologer George Bode in establishing Structural Astrology. Through this work, Bode discovered that key turning points in history have often been marked by alignments between the Black Luminaries and the Lunar Nodal Cross.

The Black Moon, Priapus, Black Sun, and Diamond can each be understood as symbolising different aspects of consciousness—an idea that resonates strongly with developments in 21st-century culture, particularly in fields such as the quantum sciences, where the role of consciousness is increasingly being integrated into scientific models.

The phases of this larger cycle are marked by conjunctions between the four points of the Lunar Nodal Cross and the four points of the Black Luminaries. The prelude to the current cycle began in March 2020, with its first stage unfolding in September 2024.

In this talk, Charlotte will explain the factors behind this powerful pattern and explore the larger cycle that may justly be called the heartbeat of history.

It’s always fascinating to look at the Solar Return for the year ahead and the patterns of growth ahead.

This year, with the Sun on the Nodal Axis, we know we are between eclipses. The 7th house is amplified, as is the Descendant, with Jupiter at 11° Leo.

Yes — 11° Leo.

We call this the “Agent Degree.”

Back in 2012, Caroline Casey told us that 11° Leo was the most significant degree she had found for “Secret Agents” while living and working in Washington DC.

And this year Jupiter at 11° Leo joins our natal 11° Mercury in the 7th house.

The astrology chart for the eclipse moment highlights a stellium in Leo, Fire, and hotheads, as the Fire-Air intensity that has swept through the astrological community over the past week, the cancelling of Steven Forrest, continues to raise many issues, resentments and foul responses. On the eve of many of us heading to UAC, it feels completely volatile: a microcosm of the macrocosm.

At this eclipse we see Venus join the Great Sextile, or as I feel misnamed Basket, given recent events, I have been calling it a Cauldron. Calling it a Basket seems much too gentle for such an intense outer-planet line-up. Venus in Libra deepens this Cauldron by another 60 degrees, opposing Neptune, sextiling Mercury and creating a Grand Trine with Pluto and Uranus. The great formation now momentarily looks like an envelope opening. What is the great message here, that will reverberate for coming months?

Venus is also now beaming in from her maximum elongation, a time in her cycle when her speed stabilises back to the same pace as the Sun. There is a determination here a not letting down, a perseverance, a willingness to stand by what we value. Venus opsite Neptune, are both in dynamic 8th-harmonic aspects to the eclipse, no doubt making this a time of reckoning, facing up to the reality we find ourselves with Leo courage and heart.

Mars and Ceres ebb from the World Point of 0° Cancer. Actions taken now affect us all.

As Saros Cycle 126 returns, as it did in August 2008 at 1° Leo, we cannot help but remember what followed. Just weeks later came the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September 2008, triggering the stock market crash and the Great Financial Crisis, with the banking system around the world left reeling. Cycles return but are never the same. In 2008 we were not immersed in this great formation, as its proven, a hard one to read.

Keeping calm and cool as the eclipse perfects, doing the inner work, helps us deal with the outer work that needs to be done. We hang on to our seats and Agent hats as the eclipse energy circulates.

August is here, and so is the Lion’s Gate hype, and this time with eclipses.

I joked the other day about how so many “portals” circulate, especially around eclipses, it’s a wonder we’re all still here. Portal or not, eclipses are powerful times of reset and change, when the eclipse Dragon confronts us to pass through its cosmic gate, to face something, or sit in stillness and let the storm pass.

This time, the eclipse falls at 20° Leo, the first in the series for a Metonic cycle at this degree, and part of Solar Saros Cycle 126, a Saros dragon series that began in 1179 over the southern pole at 26° Pisces. It will end after 68 eclipses in 2387 at 29° Pisces at the northern pole. I always love watching the animation of the eclipse Dragon, as it gives us a sense of this great celestial dragon flying above us across vast spans of time. Below from Wikipedia.

It reminds me that a dragon must always be able to fly, and that the nodal axis is where we are challenged to find a sacred balance between what has been and what is yet to come, otherwise we may crash and burn. The Dragon’s Head and the Dragon’s Tail, the North and South Node, the ancient symbols of the eternal cycle of renewal, the Ouroboros, is a most powerful symbol to be conscious of at solar eclipse time, as we rebalance our lives.

This time we are balancing the Leo–Aquarius axis, inviting us to find equilibrium between heart and our fast paced minds, the personal and the collective, creative self-expression and our shared vision for our future. Wherever 20° Leo is for you, it will be activating the next creative leap or reignite that dormant spark.

Thor’s Hammer is a YOD made of the most dynamic aspects, formed by two planets squaring one another, this time Venus and Mars, with both making sesquisquare aspects (135 degrees) to a third planet, being Pluto and the Moon, with the Sun and Jupiter opposite, also with the added semisquares 45° from Venus and Mars. Thor’s Hammer is an 8th harmonic Yod, heavy as it suggests being made of squares, semi, squares and octiles.

This is a most intense AIR and FIRE combination, in amongst the FIRE and AIR great sextile still in formation.

This week we are witnessing the devastating and unprecedented blazes across France and Spain. No doubt we are all living through our own challenges and adjustments during these times. Thor's Hammer, arriving at this Full Moon, perhaps reminds us to focus on what we are forging, or perhaps burning away, in order to give new life to something.

The true Nodes shift gears also tomorrow, moving into the Air and Fire of Leo and Aquarius transiting the last Solar eclipse degree of Feb 2026, elevating the Fire and Air themes circulating. A solar Eclipse at 20° Leo on August the 12th will perfect right over Spain and France, United Kingdom, Iceland and Greenland.

Fire both destroys and creates, and in this malleable yet potent combination of Fire and Air, transformation and movement and momentum is accelerated.

The Mjölnir, Thor’s Hammer in Norse mythology, carries several symbolic meanings.

Protection and Consecration: Its name translates roughly as “crusher” or “grinder.” Vikings wore Mjölnir as an amulet to ward off evil, and it was also used to consecrate sacred events such as weddings, births, and funerals.

Protector of the People: Thor was considered an accessible and relatable god who defended both humanity and the realms of the gods from natural and supernatural threats.

The Heartbeat of Life: In some ancient animistic traditions, the hammer was seen as a strengthening talisman for one’s life force, vitality, and protective aura.

As we enter the next eclipse season under this Full Moon, may we all feel protected, strengthened, and loved. May we find the courage to ward off what no longer serves us, allowing the fires of change to purify, cleanse, and forge a stronger path ahead.

This 3 part series invites the international astrology community to come and deepen their understanding of reading the natal chart as a living map of the family system and the ancestral field. Most astrologers reads the chart as the portrait of an individual. This series widens the lens.

Drawing on the systemic and phenomenological approach of Family Constellations, developed by Bert Hellinger, Archos shows how the natal chart can also be understood as one node within a larger, multigenerational family field, carrying inherited loyalties, unspoken stories, and patterns that quietly repeat across generations until they are seen and honoured.

“The chart is never only just ours,” says Archos. “It is also a record of those who came before us. When we read it systemically, the same placements that describe a personal struggle begin to reveal where that struggle was first set in motion and what is being asked to move.”

Over the course of the series, participants will explore how the lunar nodes, the IC–MC axis, Saturn, Pluto, and the fourth, eighth, and twelfth houses can be read as openings into the ancestral field, and how the principles that govern healthy systems belonging, order, and the balance of giving and receiving, map onto the architecture of the chart. Today, as Mars sparks off the grand alignment, circulating being called “the Barbault Basket”, or the aspect pattern being known as magical Angel Wings, or a Cradle, or a Cup, no matter what we call it really, it is the presence of so many planetary cycles in their opening sextiles and trines that makes this so unique, anchored by the bold opposition of Jupiter opposite Pluto.

As many of you would have heard, French astrologer André Barbault famously described this period as “a splendid relaunch of civilization.” Yet in his book “Planetary Cycles” 2014 he was primarily referring to the exact Saturn-Neptune conjunction at 0° Aries, which occurred on 20th February this year, with Uranus and Pluto flanking the conjunction on either side. It was at this time the war on Iran began, bombing the capital, killing the leader, starting the global energy crisis, oil price hikes and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Hardly a splendid relaunch into a new era.

Now, as we move into July, Jupiter’s progress through Leo extends this Great Sextile, with the pattern continuing to build and peaking again under a Full Moon in August.

As per usual, astrology reflects in the world around us. This week It was amazing to see perhaps the most viral video of the month , maybe year: a couple getting married atop the Empire State Building with the timely message,

“When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

It feels like the perfect message for this Great Sextile forming in our skies, reflecting both a Mars-Uranus conjunction in Gemini and the couple's daring feat. True to Mercury retrograde form, the video has since been reshaped into thousands of different versions, each carrying its own message as it spreads virally, giving people a platform to share their own voices, shouting from the rooftops!

Last week as I started my Masterclass on Geodetic Mapping, the devastating earthquake hit over Venezuela. As we know, developing nations often suffer the most during devastating natural events, due to poorly built housing and infrastructure, as well as any wealth continuously siphoned away through corruption, exploitation, and by internal and external ruling elites. When I checked the Geodetic Map I found Mercury stationed right over the area, with Chiron fresh in Taurus crossing. The Cancer Ingress A*C*G maps showed Uranus ascending exactly over this place as well. Now, as Mercury retrogrades in Cancer on the IC (on the Geodetic Map)through this area, it now profoundly traces the long process of cleanup, loss, and heartache so many are facing over there.

A Solstice Reflection: Navigating the Next Turning Point

The Solstice, marking the Sun’s ingress into Cancer, is upon us a powerful turning point in the year. The first half has presented its share of challenges, as clearly reflected in the astrological landscape we follow. Now, as we observe either the longest day or the deepest night, we stand at a crossroads, contemplating the path that lies ahead. Throughout history, the Solstice has been revered as one of the most sacred times of the year, inviting us to realign ourselves, offer gratitude, and honor the blessings in our lives.

With Uranus currently squaring the nodal axis, clarity remains elusive, and the unexpected feels like the only certainty. Today Chiron enters Taurus and another significant shift calls us to navigate differently to adjust again in these changeable times. Jupiter moves into Leo by the end of June, as the significant great sextile formation comes into a stronger alignment, kicking off with a Mars/Uranus conjunction on the 4th of July.

What does this grand alignment signify for us? Is this the “splendid reset of humanity” that André Barbault famously wrote about, will there be peace finally? Or will we find ourselves truly tested? Amidst these rare connections of the outer planets, many questions arise: Can we rise in the face of adversity and emerge with flying colours?

It’s hard to believe the year has flown by so fast and we are yet again at another Solstice, one of the major Sun turning points, or Earth-tilt extremes, of the year.

At the Cancer Ingress, Chiron has ingressed into Taurus, opening a Pandora’s Box on the value of things, the price of living, body consciousness, and our relationship with the material world, and let’s expect the the medicine, the salve and the wisdom that will come with ths transit. We are also on the brink of Jupiter’s full-pelt move into Leo and anticipate the coming Jupiter-Pluto opposition, activating the great sextile between the outer planets. Pluto, Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter are all part of this larger pattern, but Chiron sits within it too, as does the nodal axis at 1° Virgo.
