Now that we’re in the depths of summer, I thought it only natural to move onto the next category of my Great Closet Purge and try on all 22 long sleeve sweaters and cardigans in my closet. Why do I have 22 sweaters if I live in Texas? I don’t really know either, which is the whole point of this purge.

As a reminder, my criteria for keeping or parting ways with items in my closet includes the following questions:

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to?

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months?

3. Does this still feel special?

I tried on all pairs with my favorite Citizens of Humanity Annina 30” jeans*, so I’d be able to compare apples to apples. Here we go:

Dôen Cashmere Cable Knit Sweater (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes!

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Yes!

3. Does this still feel special? Yes - I’d been on the hunt for white cable knit sweater for ages when I found this. I’m excited to wear it this winter.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $249, worn once, cost per fit is $249. I have some work to do to bring down CPF!

5. Final Verdict: Keep and find ways to style this winter!

Dôen Gray Cashmere Sweater (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? To be honest, this sweater never quite fit the way I wanted it to, but I bought it during a warehouse sale and couldn’t return it. I’ve kept it in my closet in the hopes that I’d find a way to style it, but the fit is uncomfortable and I’ve worn it 0 times.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Realistically, no.

3. Does this still feel special? The fabric is so soft, but it has lost its charm as I’ve never felt comfortable enough in it to wear it.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $134, worn 0 times, cost per fit is $134.

5. Final Verdict: Pass onto a new home and STOP buying final sale items!

Everlane Gray Speckled Cashmere Sweater (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Everlane was my go-to for cashmere sweaters back in the day, especially after a sale. I found a lot of success with boat neck or turtleneck styles, but this older v-neck was a little too low cut to wear to work and didn’t actually keep me warm on true cold days. I actually put this sweater into “storage” a few years ago because I just never reached for it.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Realistically, no.

3. Does this still feel special? Love the speckled pattern, but a no for the fit.

4. Cost per Fit: I bought this sweater for $100 before I started tracking cost per fit and it’s been in storage since - I’ve probably worn it a handful of times and would estimate cost per fit to be around $20-$33.

5. Final Verdict: Pass onwards!

Everlane Cashmere Cropped High-V Sweater*

1. Do these still fit in the way I want it to? Yes! Unlike the previous version, these “high v” sweaters, are the perfect fit for me.

2. Do I see myself wearing these in the next 6 months? Definitely!

3. Do these still feel special? Yes, I love the relaxed vibes.

4. Cost per Fit: Both sweaters were purchased for $107 on sale last winter. I’ve already worn each a handful of times since! Cost per fit is around $33.

5. Final Verdict: Keep!

Reformation Cashmere Boyfriend Sweater*

1. Do these still fit in the way I want it to? Yes, I love the slouchy relaxed vibe.

2. Do I see myself wearing these in the next 6 months? Definitely!

3. Do these still feel special? Yes - the green striped pattern was what originally caught my eye and this still feels like something that fits in with my style. The pink version was gifted to me by my sister in law for Christmas!

4. Cost per Fit: Green - purchased for $198, worn 4 times, cost per fit is $50.

5. Final Verdict: Keep both!

Sablyn Tristan Cable-Knit Cashmere Sweater (Red Version*)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes, I love the slouchy relaxed vibe, although the cropped length does limit the amount of things I can pair it with.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Definitely!

3. Does this still feel special? I purchased this to wear with a pink Sablyn slip dress (white version*) on my wedding weekend, so it holds a special memory for me!

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $390, worn 2 times, cost per fit is $195.

5. Final Verdict: Keep and find more ways to style this winter!

Everlane Boxy Cashmere Turtleneck (Newer Version*)

1. Do these still fit in the way I want it to? I slowly collected these Everlane turtlenecks years ago, from various sales. For a good 5 years, these were the main workhorses in my knitwear collection. I didn’t really know how to take care of cashmere at that time and one or two have unfortunately shrunk a bit in the wash from a washing machine cycle that was a little too warm. Additionally, I realized in trying all of these on, that I just don’t love the look of a turtleneck anymore!

2. Do I see myself wearing these in the next 6 months? Probably not - I haven’t wanted to wear a turtleneck in a couple of years.

3. Do these still feel special? These felt special to me when I first purchased them, but no longer hold that spark for me.

4. Cost per Fit: Ranges varied from $100-$150; worn at least 5 times each, some more. Cost per fit is between $10-$30.

5. Final Verdict: I will likely hold onto the black turtleneck in storage, in case I decide I like turtlenecks again, but the rest I will part ways with.

Quince Crewneck Cashmere Sweater (Similar Version*)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes! It’s boxy but has a slight elasticized waist, giving it a nice sweatshirt vibe.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Definitely!

3. Does this still feel special? Yes, especially because it was gifted to me by my sister in law!

4. Cost per Fit: Since this was a gift, the cost per fit equation doesn’t apply!

5. Final Verdict: Keep!

Everlane Boxy Cashmere Crew*

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes! I LOVE the fit of this; boxy and slouchy, but hits at the right length on my waist.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? 1000%

3. Does this still feel special? I honestly think this might be my favorite sweater at the moment; the fit and color are perfection and it feels super special.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $137, worn twice, cost per fit is $68.5.

5. Final Verdict: Keep!

Reformation Clara Cashmere Cardigan*

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes! I bought this last year after a long search for the perfect cardigan and it still fits perfectly.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Yes!

3. Does this still feel special? It does - I feel like I haven’t fully cracked all the ways to style a cardigan, so I’m excited to style it more this year.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $198, worn twice, cost per fit is $99.

360 Cashmere Turtleneck (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? I haven’t wanted to wear this in years, likely because it’s a turtleneck!

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Unlikely.

3. Does this still feel special? I love blue and white stripes, but because of the turtleneck, it has lost its charm.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $267.16, worn 3 times, cost per fit is $89.

5. Final Verdict: I’ll be passing this on!

Doen Turtleneck (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? This was purchased in the same final sale as the gray sweater linked above. Although the body of the sweater is a better fit, the neck is incredibly tight for a turtleneck.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Unfortunately, no.

3. Does this still feel special? Again, super soft, love the color, but because of the neck, it has lost its spark for me.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $174, worn once, cost per fit is $174.

5. Final Verdict: Passing this onward!

Naadam V Neck Cashmere Cardigan (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes; boxy and oversized, this is the perfect cardigan to style on its own or over another top or cami.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Yes!

3. Does this still feel special? Yes - I couldn’t imagine a black cardigan that I’d like more than this.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $135, worn at least 3 times, cost per fit is $45.

5. Final Verdict: Keeping!

Vince Cashmere Crew (Old)

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? Yes; slouchy and oversized.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Yes!

3. Does this still feel special? Yes, the cashmere on this is so soft.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $139.97, worn at least 2 times, cost per fit is $69.99.

5. Final Verdict: Keeping!

Naadam Cashmere Pullover

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? The collar on this pullover is extra thick and wide, which makes it uncomfortable and causes my hair to tangle.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? I don’t think so.

3. Does this still feel special? When I saw Bhavitha’s iconic opening look on the Chanel’s 2025 Métiers d’art show, I immediately thought of this sweater! However, because of the thick collar, I just don’t think I’ll wear this.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $165, worn at least 1 time, cost per fit is $165.

5. Final Verdict: Going to pass along!

Jenni Kayne Cardigan*

1. Does this still fit in the way I want it to? I had been curious about the Jenni Kayne cardigans for years and finally bit the bullet and purchased it in beige. I love how it fits, but not sure if it’s “special” enough to justify a higher price tag.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months? Yes!

3. Does this still feel special? I love this cardigan and it definitely still feels special to me, although I don’t know if I’d purchase any more colors as I think you could maximize cost per fit by finding slightly better quality or cheaper alternatives.

4. Cost per Fit: Purchased for $275, worn at least 1 time, cost per fit is $275.

5. Final Verdict: Keeping!

In total, of the 22 sweaters I own, I will be keeping 12 and will be parting ways with 10. Here’s what I learned:

1. Forcing myself to try on each and every sweater made it easier to recognize that turtlenecks were no longer a cut that I liked wearing. For example, with the Everlane sweaters, I initially thought I had just gotten bored of those sweaters, having worn them for so many years. But then, when I tried on the Doen sweater and the 360 sweater, it clicked and I realized that it wasn’t that I had grown bored of Everlane, but rather of turtlenecks. I’m making a mental note to not buy any turtlenecks this season - maybe absence will make the heart grow fonder, and I’ll love turtlenecks again in future years, but it’s on the block list for now.

2. I owned a ton of neutral sweaters when I started, but the sweater that I felt best in was my red Everlane boxy sweater. Of the 12 remaining in my closet, there is now a better split, 6 are neutrals (black, beige, taupe, white) and 6 are colors (pinks, reds, green). If I add any more sweaters to my collection in the future, I’ll be mindful of that split and avoid indexing on any one category.

To make myself feel a little better about my long hours and generally sucky weeks, I did do a littttttttle bit of shopping recently. I know it’s a little counterintuitive to add stuff to my closet while in the midst of a purge, but in my defense, one of the items had been on my mind for a while and the other I picked up for a recent work trip to New York. Both items fell within the shopping framework that I shared in my Tokyo handbag post and were 1) within budget 2) maximized cost per fit and 3) felt special.

How exactly did I maximize cost per fit with these two pieces? Let me tell you!

Tip #1: Shop secondhand

My first tip for maximizing cost per fit is to shop secondhand! Environmental benefits aside, secondhand pieces are usually much cheaper than retail, decreasing the “cost” part of the cost per fit equation. Your value increases the cheaper your item is, and shopping secondhand can be a great way to get cheaper prices without sacrificing quality. Both of my purchases were from TheRealReal.

The first item I picked up was this vintage Louis Feraud skirt suit. The butter yellow color immediately caught my eye and for a wool and silk blend set, it was priced at an incredible $72. I plan on wearing just the jacket for now, but may end up shortening the skirt at a later point to wear as a fun summer set! If I can wear this jacket at least 3 times this summer, my cost per fit will be less than $25. Here’s how I styled the jacket for my recent work trip in New York - it polished off a casual base to elevate my style for a professional setting. 💪🏼

Tip #2: Wear your clothes

My second tip for maximizing cost per fit is to wear your clothes, multiple times. The more times you wear something, the more it increases the “wear” count or “fit” count in the cost per fit equation. So, regardless of if you buy something secondhand or full price, increasing the wear will increase the value you’re receiving from the item.

The second piece I picked up were these Nili Lotan green pants. These were more expensive than the suit, at $285, but still priced much cheaper than retail. Pants are much more versatile than a suit jacket and this green color is slowly becoming a “summer neutral” for me. These pants are butter soft and at 98% cotton, I plan to wear them all summer. With at least 10 wears, the cost per fit will be less than $30! I’ve already worn them twice, styled slightly differently.

• On the left, I’ve styled them with A.Emery suede sandals*, a white Sezane blouse (sold out, green linked*), and my vintage Loewe shoulder bag I picked up in Tokyo. I’ve left my hair down and have on minimal jewelry.

• On the right, I’m using the same base of sandals and pants, but am wearing an old peplum top along with my Celine Ava bag. I’ve pulled my hair back this time and have on beaded chunky jewelry.

How should I style this next, so I can maximize my wear?

One of my favorite parts of the trip was shopping for secondhand bags in Tokyo. I’d seen allll of the Youtube Videos and blogs from influencers leading up to the trip (Alyssa Lenore has some good ones) and I thought I had a good idea of what to expect. Even so, visiting in person and walking into stores with walls and walls of Chanel and Louis Vuitton was really overwhelming. Here’s the advice I’d give a friend, if he or she were planning to go vintage shopping soon:

1. Everyone tells you that prices are not as good as you’d expect for secondhand, but you can still find a deal if you’re patient and shop around a couple of stores. I do agree with this, but I also didn’t have days to dedicate to handbag shopping as it was my husband’s honeymoon too 😂 and we had so many other fun things planned! Personally, I tried to just make sure that I wasn’t getting a bad deal before making a purchase (aka buying something at or more expensive than retail).

2. Unless, you have endless money, set a budget that you’re okay with spending on handbags. This seems obvious, but having this number before you see the Hermes and Chanel and rare exotic bags is going to be helpful and help you from losing the plot and spending a car’s worth on bags.

3. Have a strategy. Some of the influencers I watched recommended having a “wishlist” bag or two, such as a Chanel Classic Flap, as that would make it easy to navigate each store and hunt for what you want. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a “dream bag” that was at top of my list - I was curious about vintage Chanels but equally curious about vintage Fendi baguettes, vintage canvas Dior and Celine, as well as other fashion houses such as Bottega, Miu Miu, Prada and Loewe. So, how did I narrow down my choices and decide?

My vintage handbag shopping strategy:

My approach for vintage shopping was the same as my approach to shopping overall, which I wrote about recently in this post:

1. Stick to Budget: I saved up and set aside around $4000 for shopping in Tokyo over the past year by allocating a small portion of my paycheck toward a Tokyo sinking fund. I also received a bonus from work recently, part of which I allocated to this fund, which helped considerably increase its size. I know to some, this will sound like a crazy amount, but to others, this may be nothing. $4000 felt like the right amount for me because I knew it was cheapest I’d likely find a vintage Chanel Small Classic Flap. Now, I’ve never really been into the “Chanel game”, probably because by the time I started earning money of my own, Chanel started their price hikes, and I lost my interest. However, I knew Japan would have the best condition vintage Chanels with 24K gold plated hardware (discontinued in current bags). I wasn’t sure exactly what the vintage handbag gods would reveal, but $4K was sort of my upper limit for that type of “lifetime opportunity special purchase”. And if I didn’t find a Chanel I liked, I could split up that money across a couple of other less expensive handbags! (Spoiler, this is what I ended up doing).

2. Optimize Cost per Fit: Since these handbags would be pricier purchases, I wanted to make sure that I’d actually get good wear out of whatever I bought. So, I avoided super trendy micro bags or bright colors that wouldn’t really fit into my everyday life.

3. Make it Special: This ended up being the most important criteria for making my final decision as there were PLENTY of bags that I could have fit into budget and that I theoretically could have gotten a lot of wear out of. Not all of these bags were special, though. I tried to ensure that everything I bought felt unique to ME and that I couldn’t easily find elsewhere. I slowly started to avoid the Louis Vuittons as I felt like there were hundreds of the same thing available in each store - I focused instead on the “rarer” finds.

To all the bags I loved in Tokyo (+ what I bought)

One of the first bags I found and loved was this vintage Loewe Denim shoulder bag at Hive Preloved (appointment required). It was priced at 111,600 yen or around $712.76, which is probably a little more expensive than I could have found online (see the same bag on TRR* priced at $695). I don’t regret this purchase though as this bag was in pristine condition and came with a dustbag whereas the one I linked on TRR has discoloration and residue! I never saw this bag again at other vintage stores in Japan so I’m glad I bought it when I did. I’m obsessed with this blue/white/brown color combination and think it will be the perfect bag for summer. I’ve already worn it 3 times! Final Decision: Purchased ✅

Hive Preloved is mainly known for its vintage Fendi baguettes and the selection here did not disappoint, although pricing does vary based upon how rare or unique the piece is. I went in on the hunt for a canvas baguette, but as soon as I laid my eyes on this beaded brown number, I knew she was coming home with me. Isn’t she the dreamiest bag? She’s got a zipper at the top and a larger strap which means she’s functional, as well as beautiful. She was priced at 205,200 yen or around $1,310 and was in great condition. Last week, I shared that I resold my Saint Laurent Wallet on Chain. I’m hoping that this bag will be a good replacement for dressier occasions. Final Decision: Purchased ✅

This cute Miu Miu bag was at a smaller Brand Off location that had great selection but slightly higher prices than I wanted to pay. I loved the size of this bag and the gold hardware, but ultimately felt that I wouldn’t get as much wear out of this bag if I had to hold it by the top handles. It was priced at 358,182 yen or around $2,287, which was around $1000 or so off of retail, but still more than I wanted to pay for a bag I wouldn’t wear as much. You’ll see a couple of other cute Miu Miu options in the background of that picture. What helped me make my decision was that I couldn’t pick a “favorite” out of those - they were all super cute, but none were special. Final Decision: Passed 🙅🏻‍♀️

That same Brand Off location had an entire wall of Chanel bags! This one caught my eye but at 727,273 yen or around $4,644 it was more than my budget (plus at this point, I’d already bought the two handbags from Hive Preloved…so the budget had shrunk). The leather on this bag felt a little dry and it didn’t feel that special compared to the other bags on the shelf. It was pretty easy to walk away from this Chanel, but I did have trouble with one later! Final Decision: Passed 🙅🏻‍♀️

The next day we walked into a different Brand Off location. The selection here was really small but this vintage Chanel wallet on chain caught my eye. It had such buttery leather and was priced EXTREMELY well at 250,000 yen or $1,516, which was in budget!! However, it’s hard to tell from this picture, but it had a ton of scratches (especially on the inside) and the bag felt extremely delicate. I also didn’t love where the bag, with its longer strap, hit me when I wore it. It felt a little crazy to be walking away from such a good deal, but I knew I wouldn’t get as much wear out of it and $1,516 was a lot to spend on a bag that would just sit pretty on a shelf in my closet! Final Decision: Passed 🙅🏻‍♀️

Later that day, I walked into a different vintage store that had several of these vintage Fendi Mama baguettes, which were so cute!! They were priced pretty well at 170,000 yen or $1,085. I thought that these would fit well into my lifestyle but I couldn’t decide if I actually thought these were special or if I just thought they were a good deal. I couldn’t pick a color I liked best so I decided it was a sign that I needed to move on. I’d already bought a beautiful vintage Fendi this trip and I wanted that type of feeling each time! Final Decision: Passed 🙅🏻‍♀️

Near the end of our trip, we had about an hour and a half to kill before a dinner reservation at a Ramen spot and my husband noticed that there was another Brand Off in the area so we popped by. Somehow, this unplanned addition to the itinerary ended up having some of the best bags and prices! I spotted this vintage Loewe shoulder bag immediately. It had the butteriest leather and was priced at 72,727 yen or around $464. I loved the gold rings and the individual strands of leather detail on the strap. I can see myself wearing this a ton this summer with linen and minimal gold jewelry. Final Decision: Purchased ✅

Last, but not least, was this Celine Small Heloise Bag. Now, this is not a vintage handbag, but it was in impeccable condition and came with a dustbag and was priced 40% off retail at 309,091 yen or $1,974. I loved the gold hardware and felt the black color and simple style was something that I could wear all year round. “Normal” hobo bags tend to swallow me up but this one was the perfect size. With this purchase, I’d be officially at the end of my handbag budget - I felt like it was the perfect last bag to round out the trip! Final Decision: Purchased ✅

How will I decide which items to keep and which items to part ways with? I’ll be asking myself the following 3 questions:

1. Does this still fit, in the way I want it to?

   The second part of this question is important. Just because something fits, doesn’t mean that you’ll feel confident wearing it. Sometimes our bodies change or items may shrink or get baggier with wear. It’s important to try things on and verify that they still fit in the way you want them to.

2. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months?*

   This is pretty straightforward, but I added an asterisk to account for seasons. Sometimes, in the dead of summer, it may be hard to know if you’ll want to wear a specific cashmere sweater in wintertime. In those times, it’s okay to hold onto pieces for a little longer and revaluate in different temperatures.

   What is not okay, is to hold onto something because you think it might be “cute to wear to Coachella one day”, if you have no plans of actually going to Coachella one day. Unless you and your friends are actively in a group chat planning for the next music festival, it’s time to part ways with aspirational, fantasy pieces. And if you do end up actually going to Coachella or another music festival one day? Who’s to say you’d actually want to wear that item that you saved years ago? You’d probably buy something new that is in line with current trends or wear a staple that you feel super comfortable in.

3. Does this still feel special?

   Sometimes things fit and you could see yourself wearing them to upcoming events, but these items have just lost their spark for you. It could be for a variety of reasons - maybe your tastes have shifted, or something else has caught your eye, or you’re just craving a little variety in your life! If an item no longer feels special, you don’t HAVE to keep it. Giving it a new home can be the perfect way to free up space and budget in your closet for something new.

Alright, so now that we’ve established our framework for the purge, it was time to approach my first category. Since I did a little bit of vintage handbag shopping in Tokyo (more on that soon), it felt fitting to put handbags on the chopping block first. I was chuffed to realize that even though the 4 handbags that I was parting ways with cost me $2,465, my average cost per fit overall was around $31!

Up first was my Strathberry Raffia Basket Tote. I was obsessed with this when I first got it. It was a much cheaper alternative to the popular Loewe Square Raffia bag at the time, and I thought it was more functional than that bag too, as it had a zippered pocket that could store valuables such as credit cards or cash. However, after using it for a season or two, I slowly started to get frustrated with it falling over in my car and things toppling out of the top. Because of the open top, I also felt more self conscious walking around with this and felt like I was constantly checking to make sure I hadn’t lost something or something hadn’t been stolen. Because of its stiff boxy structure, it wasn’t like a tote bag that I could “hold shut” with my arm while carrying - it was always open. Ultimately, I realized it didn’t “fit” the way I wanted it to and I couldn’t see myself wearing it much in the next 6 months, so it was time to part ways. My final cost per fit was $39.50.

Next, was my Staud Owen Shoulder Bag. I loved the vibes of this bag - unfussy, mixed metals, good price point for quality (or so I thought). However, I started to get annoyed with the mixed metal buckle, because it would never “sit flat” and always poked out in an awkward way. I found the bag was a little smaller than I’d like for every day wear too. Although I could see myself wearing it in the next 6 months (you can always wear a simple black bag), it didn’t fit the way I wanted it to and it didn’t feel special to me anymore and I kept daydreaming of other black bags - time to say goodbye. My final cost per fit was $38.02.

My Saint Laurent Wallet on Chain was next up on the chopping block. Now, there was nothing wrong with this bag - it was incredibly versatile and was my go-to bag to wear to weddings, for years! The strap could be folded to wear the bag as a shoulder bag or completely hidden to wear as a clutch. The neutral color meant it would match with everything. I would still highly recommend this bag to others. However, after having worn it for years, it just didn’t feel as special to me anymore. I picked up an “event bag” in Tokyo that I think will work well for weddings and is a little less formal and could be worn to nice dinners too. To make space for that, I decided to part ways with this bag. I was able to sell it for a decent price, so my final cost per fit was $39.67.

The final bag I parted ways with was my Hunting Season envelope clutch. I originally bought this as a bag a “special event clutch” before I got my Saint Laurent bag. Although I’ve had it a couple of years, I haven’t reached for it as much. I found that this bag was a little too small for every day, yet felt a little too plain for special events. This bag didn’t fit how I wanted, I couldn’t see myself wearing it, and it didn’t feel special to me anymore. Final cost per fit was $26.41.

All of these bags are on their way to their new owners and I hope they’ll give them a great second life! Speaking of second lives, I picked up 4 secondhand handbags in Tokyo. I’ll share more next week on how I chose these bags out of a sea of options in Tokyo and how cost per fit factored into it.

1. I had more discretionary spending to allocate towards categories such as shopping, since I was done with saving up for a wedding.

2. With my newfound extra budget and with fluctuating sizing and new trends, I felt the need to quickly add items to my closet to fill “gaps”, without putting as much thought into what I was adding or how it would actually fit in. I sort of panicked and tried to stretch my budget as far as it could go, opting for cheaper “basics” that I thought would allow me to mix and match effortlessly, but instead has led to a closet full of dull, uninspiring (to me) things.

3. I attempted to “upskill” my closet tracking process from my tried and true Airtable method I’ve previously shared to a closet tracking app. I lost steam while adding items to the app and was frustrated when I couldn’t find the right picture for my items. I found myself in a situation where some of my items were logged on the app and most were on Airtable and I was keeping track of stuff nowhere…lol. Lesson learned: Don’t fix what isn’t broken!

I opened up my Airtable tracker today and gasped a bit when I saw that I had 219 items in my closet - yikes!! After I recovered from the initial sticker shock and started to look through the individual items, I realized that my Airtable closet database was outdated. There were items still listed that I had already donated and a few newer items from my recent trip to Japan that I hadn’t yet added. There were also many, many items that I still had that I just didn’t wear or need. For example, tell me why I have this many sweaters in my closet, if I live in Texas??

This spring and summer, I’m on a mission to reset my closet and realign my personal style and spending habits to my core fashion values (shared below):

1. Stick to Budget: There are many ways to budget for your closet, but I like to set aside 15% of my post bills income for a shopping “sinking fund” and the rest goes towards savings or for other sinking funds, such as travel or home improvement. Once I have money in this fund, I can use it however I see fit towards shopping - worry free! I’ve kept to this goal pretty consistently last year, but the next two values are where I fell off of the track.

2. Optimize Cost per Fit: There are two components to cost per fit: the price of the item and the amount of times I could see myself realistically wearing it. There isn’t a perfect way to optimize cost per fit and it will vary per item and per person’s individual style and lifestyle. For me, trendy things such as sheer tops will not get a ton of wear and so I’ll set a much lower budget for these items. Core staples such as jeans or a “going out for dinner top” will get much more wear and I can set aside a higher budget for these things. I personally also choose to invest in quality and natural fabrics where possible - these materials will cost more, but also will last longer and get worn more often and are slightly better for the environment, so it evens out in my book.

3. Make it Special: My final category, and where I missed the mark the most in the past 8 months, is to only add pieces to my wardrobe that feel special. When I panicked and bought a bunch of Everlane and Reformation “basics” to tide me over on WFH zoom calls, I suddenly had a lot of stuff I could wear, only to realize that I didn’t want to. I didn’t get it completely wrong - the Reformation red cardigan, Lie Studio red earrings, Vince suede loafers, Le Monde Beryl flats, and Sablyn silk pants linked in those respective posts are all examples of things that feel special and very core to ME. Before I checkout, I need remember to pause and ask myself, “Is this special?”.

So what’s next? As the title of this post suggests, over the next few weeks, I’ll be slowly conducting a very large closet PURGE. Rather than cut everything out at once, my approach is to remove a few items from my closet each a week and sell them over Poshmark or donate them to local thrift stores like Heartening (which has an AMAZING mission).

It can be incredibly cathartic to “Marie Kondo” your closet and only keep what you love and get rid of the rest, but it can also leave you feeling a little vulnerable and doubtful of your choices, when you face an empty closet and wonder if you should have gotten rid of the classic black sweater that didn’t fill your cup while you were doing your culling. I also imagine it would make me want to “fill” my closet right away again, which is sort of what led to this mess to begin with. Slow and steady will work best for me!

I won’t prevent myself from shopping during this time, but will hold myself to the 3 core values I listed above. I’ll definitely bring you guys along for the journey and am excited to reflect on what my closet looks like in 6 months.

HOWDY

Hubby and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary recently! I know it isn’t quite March yet, but since I wore my emerald green wedding shoes (white version*) to a celebratory dinner at Uchiko and also found snapdragons, my wedding flowers, at the supermarket this weekend, I’ve decided that spring is here. I’m feeling a moodier pastel color palette this year. What about you??

You don’t need to buy anything new, but you can if you want to! Sometimes, it’s just fun to look at pretty things - a little virtual window shopping never hurt anyone! Here are a few beautiful pieces that have caught my eye recently:

• This Dôen set (top* and fringe pants*) is so dainty yet fun and is the perfect bridal getting ready outfit IMO. You could also wear the pieces separately throughout spring for a more casual look!

• These Reformation navy silk shorts* would look so nice paired with a slouchy navy sweater*

• I shared a few recent beauty launches last week, but this new Westman Atelier Sheer Tinted Lipstick* just popped up on the website! The color “English Rose” looks soooo pretty. I love Westman Atelier blushes, but have never tried their lipstick because matte formulas don’t work well for me - this new “hydrobalm” formula is interesting! However, at $50 a pop, I’ll definitely be waiting for the Sephora sale before I consider purchasing.

• If money was no object, I would also definitely be adding this Bottega Vanity case* to my collection. The matcha color is DIVINE. This Prada Bonnie tote* in Aviator Blue is cute too.

• Speaking of matcha, I’ve been loving an Iced Matcha with a splash of vanilla syrup in the afternoons! It doesn’t give me caffeine jitters and the milky green color makes me happy.

• This Chanel lip and cheek balm* has been alll over my feed since Pati Dubroff shared that she used it to create Margot’s signature looks for the Wuthering Heights press tour. Many shades are sold out but ‘Healthy Pink’ looks like a beautiful rosy wash of color. I have a sneaking suspicion that this little pot is more hype than substance - have any of you tried it?

• If you’re headed to a tropical destination this March, this linen Faithfull dress* could be really cute - I love the deep “U” back.

• I love the oversized casual look of this denim jacket with the corduroy collar* - perfect for those that are not quite ready for linen!

• These suede light blue dad sneakers from New Balance* are so cool.

I’ve been having fun letting my accessories shine at the start of the year - a cool pair of shoes or earrings can really elevate an outfit!

I’m obsessed with these Vince Larose Loafers* I picked up during Black Friday! Something about the suede and a block heel is just chef’s kiss. I wore them to dinner recently styled with Citizens of Humanity Annina Jeans (darker wash*, similar wash but slightly different style*), a Lisa Yang cashmere sweater (older, but linking a beige version I found on TRR), and my L19 dupe.

I’ve never really been a ballet flats person, but when I saw these Le Monde Beryle flats*, I couldn’t stop thinking about them! The studs help balance out the femininity of the shoe and add interest to a “basic” style. I also love the subtle “v” above the toe box as it helps the shoe look more pointed and helps prevent my feet from looking too stubby.

These are quite expensive and I personally wouldn’t pay full price for them, but I got lucky during Black Friday to find them on sale! I’ve found two pairs on TRR (one, two) and will also link a few similar alternatives that are at a lower price point (Naturalizer and Schutz).

I paired these with my Sablyn Brynn silk pants* I found on the TRR, an Everlane cropped v neck sweater*, my Staud shoulder bag (old, similar*), and Lié Studio earrings in red* (yellow on sale*, green*), which are the perfect pop of color. The earrings go on sale often so wait until the color you want is discounted!

FOOD

It has been ages since we’ve tried a new restaurant in Austin that we thought was at least 4/5 stars! I’m happy to share that Casa Bianca’s “funky italian” finally checked the box. We ordered a couple of things, but the Lamb Cavatelli was our favorite. I’d highly recommend!

SWEET TREATS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

You don’t have to spend money to treat yourself on Valentine’s Day, but you can if you want to! Here are a couple of sweet treats that would brighten my day, all free or under $100. I forced Hubby to come to a pilates class with me this morning and then we got coffee after. Highly recommend the Black Sesame Latte from Paperboy! I want to know, how are you celebrating this weekend?

1. Bake a cake! I’m not a “baker” but this Carrot-Orange Olive Oil Cake recipe from NYT was so easy to follow and it tasted incredible.

   

2. Sephora goodies: There have been some fun releases from my favorite brands recently! You, of course, don’t need to buy anything new, but here are a couple of suggestions just in case you’re looking to pick up a little sweet treat :)

   1. I’m still loving my Eadem lip balm in Fig Sauce* and the brand recently announced two new shades: Sakura Shaved Ice* (a “milky, translucent, neutral-toned pink”) and Château Rose* (a “cool, vintage rose with a golden-champagne pearl finish”). Both lip balms are showing up as “coming soon” on Sephora at the moment, but I think these are the perfect pinks for Valentine’s day!

   2. Merit recently released a new shade in their Signature Lip Lightweight Lipstick in Archival in Bespoke*, described as a pink brown. I had almost picked up their limited edition Archival Holiday set, but skipped it because it had a Lip Blush, a more matte formula, which I don’t love as much. I can’t wait to swatch this shade in stores soon!

   3. Finally, the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Powder Blush Duo in Sable & Suede*. This isn’t a “new” recommendation per se, but it isn’t one I hear talked about as often, as the Baby Cheeks Blush Sticks* usually get all of the hype (well deserved, it’s one of the best cream blush formulas out there). If you’re looking for a “creamy” powder formula, I think this little palette is incredible. I love that it comes with a bronzy shade and that both shades are newer and not found in the blush or contour sticks. Sidenote, the Jam & Fizz shade is so so beautiful - it was ultimately a little too bold for me, but could be right up your alley if you like bright blushes!

3. Trader Joe’s flowers: I love flowers, but I usually don’t buy any from the grocery stores around me as bouquets are pricey! If you live near a Trader Joe’s, you can get the most beautiful flowers for under $10.

4. Cozy Movie Night ft. Devil Wear’s Prada: Are you guys as excited as I am for the sequel?? You may already have access to the original via a streaming service, but if not, you should be able to rent it from Amazon for $2.99!

5. Reread Vacation Notes: One of my favorite things to do on vacation is to start a shared note on my phone and jot down allllll the little details that happened that day, that I don’t want to forget about. Things like meeting cute pets, the taste of yummy bites, how it felt to see a breathtaking sight, and the small interactions with people that the passage of time could erode away. Then a few months or years later, I like to open up that note and reread it and all those faded details become clear and I get to experience a happy memory again. For example, on my shared note from a trip to Hawaii with my Hubby a few years ago (where he ended up proposing!!), I wrote down that we ate incredible poke at a food truck called Aji Limo. I specifically wanted to remember that the Hawaiian Sun Passion Orange soda tasted like skittles and the sounds of the chickens clucking around the cute food truck area. Boom - happy memory unlocked :) Obviously, you can’t do this one right away, but keep it in mind for a future vacation!

The holidays are finally here! It’s amazing what two extra days off of work and yummy food can do for your nervous system. I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving with your loved ones.

I celebrated my birthday this month! For my birthday dinner, I wore the Sablyn silk pants I purchased from The Real Real a few weeks ago. I paired it a with a light pink Sablyn sweater*, suede A.Emery* sandals, and my L19 dupe. I’m still loving the slouchy yet structured vibes at the moment.

Totally Rec wrote a post about Black Friday recently and I recommend reading it if you haven’t already. Similar to her, I felt that Black Friday sales showed up in my inbox up super early this year and none of the discounts were compelling. I approached shopping this year as I would any normal weekend - I’ve got a budget for shopping set aside and I tried to find things that I would have bought at full price, just at a discount. Here’s what I picked up:

Black Friday Haul:

• Vince Larose Loafers* - I love the suede and the blocked heel! I can’t wait to style these with slightly flared jeans and a sweater.

• Staud Hendrix Boots* - I love the square toe, the color, and the boot shaft height. I’m imagining styling these with long dresses and with jeans and sweaters - very versatile.

• Lié Studio The Hannah Earrings* - I’ve built up a nice collection of golden toned jewelry over the years, but find that my “non golden toned” jewelry is a bit lacking, which limits the ways I can style outfits. I thought these red earrings were beautiful and so fitting for the season. They’re made from stone, and not plastic, which has me hopeful that they’ll fit and feel luxe. I’m excited to style them with both casual and dressy outfits!

• Reformation Ezra Slim Fit Long Sleeve* - Needed a few long sleeve tees for the cooler months aheads. From the pictures, these look like they’ll hit at the perfect waist length. I picked up Black and Heather Taupe!

• Lululemon Define Cropped Jacket Nulu* and Swiftly Tech Long-Sleeve Shirt 2.0 Waist Length* - I’ve been running outside more often recently and needed a few long sleeve tees for the chillier mornings. The Lululemon waist length is my favorite as it hits at the perfect spot and looks great with high waisted leggings, without being cropped. I picked up True Navy, Black, and Slate. I also noticed that the Define Cropped Jacket in Goodnight Plum was in the Black Friday sale! I have the leggings and sports bra already, so the jacket was the perfect addition to round out the set.

I saw a ton of ads and sponsored posts from Leset and Jenny Bird this year and despite the modest discounts of 30% and 25%, the constant repetition of Black Friday content gave me a ton of brand fatigue. If everyone suddenly starts talking about how the Margo Tee is the perfect tee and the Jenny Bird hoops are the perfect day to night accessory they never leave the house without…it feels suspicious to me. I’m sure both of those items are great, I just personally can’t buy things when there is that THAT much hype surrounding it. I’ve been obsessed with Eadem lip balms* recently! The colors are lovely and cleverly named and they leave a hydrating finish without being sticky. My favorite shade so far is Fig Sauce.

FOOD

Is that not the most glorious spread of food you’ve seen? I ate GOOD this month.

Most of this was actually home cooked, but we did go to Bufalina (top center, top right) for date night and Uchiko (not pictured) for my birthday dinner. Both are longtime favorites of ours and I’d still highly recommend.

My October was so much fun and so tiring at the same time. ACL was a blast — we got to see Luke Combs, Marina, Doechii, and Sabrina Carpenter. Everyone was amazing, but Doechii stole the show for me! I also had fun leaning into the cowboy aesthetic, made easier because of boots and a hat we were gifted through my husband’s work - lucky girl over here!!

Besides ACL, October was also special because of Diwali, Halloween, hubby and my dating anniversary, and my brother getting engaged (such a happy surprise)!

FASHION

This month, rather than sharing fashion bits that have been on my mind, I thought I’d share two outfits I wore in October that I loved and felt incredible in!

Sidenote - I bought a cardigan and silk pants to wear with sweaters last month and still haven’t had the chance to wear them because Texas has been hot. It’s finally starting to cool down and I’m hopeful I can put my knitwear to use this month!

On the left I’m wearing a brown silk sezane shirt*, brown aritzia linen pants*, a.mery suede flip flops*, and the L19 amazon dupe in maroon. I loved the color palette of this outfit and how I could channel “fall” through my suede flip flops while still being comfortable in the 80 and 90 degree weather.

On the right I’m wearing a silk St. John shirt I thrifted on The Real Real (similar*), Citizens of Humanity Annina Jeans 30 inches*, old black leather block sandals, and the same L19 amazon dupe bag. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but the silk shirt has a tuxedo pattern to it which was an interesting texture and I loved wearing it with the bottom few buttons undone. The jeans were an amazing find - they hit perfectly with heels on my 5’2” frame without needing alteration!

I’m craving slouchy yet polished looks this season and I’m making a mental note to channel this energy for November too!

BEAUTY

The Sephora sale is here! What are your favorite things to restock on? Anything new you’re picking up to try?

I’m restocking on the Biossance Squalane Face Cream* (although some recent reviews have said that there was recently a reformulation…hopeful that the newer version still works well for me), this Paula’s Choice spf*, this Paula’s Choice vitamin C serum*, and my favorite Clinique mascara*.

I’m also picking up this newly released Patrick Ta eyeshadow palette* (love that I can pick out a “shade range” for this palette, since I never get any use out of lighter shades) and this Eadem Lip Balm in Burnt Malai* (which looks like the perfect mid brownish pink shade).

FOOD

We went to Birdie’s for their Aiello’s popup recently and loved the vodka sauce pasta and the tiramisu! Doesn’t that look heavenly? Unfortunately, the popup is over, but Birdie’s is always a good choice for a delicious coursed meal.

For our “dating” Anniversary, we went to Sushi Bar in Austin. We’ve been once before and love the Omakase here, because it’s all fish over rice (no small plates). I was having such a good time, I forgot to take any pictures of the nigiri, but did snap a picture of this ice cream served with a crumble, which was the perfect treat to end the night! Sushi Bar is definitely one of the most expensive Omakase’s in Austin, so I’d recommend saving it for a special occasion.

I love the format of her monthly newsletters and thought I’d give a similar format a try. With work being more demanding recently, it feels more feasible to commit to a monthly post, rather than weekly. Also, to be honest, I don’t have as much to share week to week and a monthly compilation feels more fun to write and hopefully more interesting for you to read!

FASHION

5 Things I Bought in September

1. Western Belt*: The Aritzia western belt I wrote about last month finally arrived and I’m happy with the quality. Sometimes, the hardware on belts can feel cheap, but this belt has a nice weight to it. I’m excited to style it this season, especially at a music festival I’m going to later this month.

2. Red Cardigan*: I recently realized that all of my knitwear is shades of beige, brown, or black! I was on the hunt for a new cardigan (as I only have one big chunky black one) and decided to fully lean into color with red. I’m imagining styling it like this:

   I also think it could look really cute draped over my shoulders with a dress! Although I ended up finalizing this Reformation cardigan*, I also ordered this White & Warren* cardigan to compare - the White & Warren cardigan was much softer than the Ref one, but it was a tad snug and a little orangey-red, while I was looking for cherry red. Also, the White & Warren one was almost twice as much as the Ref one, which didn’t feel worth it to me, after having tried on both.

3. Silky Pants: I have a hunch that silk pants and chunky sweaters are going to be super popular this year! I personally love the look of the mismatched textures both in monochrome and mismatched:

   

   I initially ordered the Petite Reformation Olina Pant* in Mahogany and although the fit and length were perfect, Mahogany looked a little too warm on me and didn’t match well with any of the knitwear I own. I put myself on the waitlist for the “Morel” color, but then found these on TheRealReal: silk Sablyn pants in magenta for $176.25 (originally around ~700) and silk Reformation pants in black for $132 (originally around $200). Both were the perfect length on me and in great condition - excited to style these when they come back from the cleaners!

4. Barbour Top: I haven’t walked into a store in ages, but our friend wanted to try on Barbour jackets when we were in London and we popped into a store to get out of the rain. I wasn’t planning to buy anything but when I touched the fabric on this shirt, it was so soft, that I had to get it. It’s a nice memory and souvenir of our trip and I know I’ll get a lot of use out of it!

5. Loro Piana L19 Dupe: I love the look of the Loro Piana L19 clutch and I’m not one to usually recommend dupes, but you can’t even buy the L19 clutch if you wanted to as Loro Piana has been following the footsteps of Hermes with the L19 becoming “exclusive” to customers that have purchase history with the brand. I was searching for a clutch to wear to a wedding and ended up purchasing this $35 L19 dupe, which honestly is amazing value for the money. Does it feel as good as the real deal? No. But at $35, and considering I can’t even get the real thing, I am so happy with this purchase. I don’t have to baby it and it packs quite nicely for travel.

TRAVEL

Hubby and I got to go to London this month for a friend’s wedding! We both have been a little busy with work, so it was a quick 4 day trip. We spent about 1 day in London before heading to the countryside for the wedding. It was such a fun trip and we can’t wait to go back one day!

Lodging

In London, we stayed at the Hoxton Holborn, which we picked because of its proximity to the sightseeing we wanted to do around the city. We picked the “Shoebox” room and it was as tight as it sounds. I’d probably opt for a bit more space in the future, but this was perfectly fine for the 24 hours we were there.

In the countryside, we stayed at The Bowood in Wiltshire, which was about a 15 minute drive from the wedding venue. This hotel was lovely - the staff were so friendly and helpful, the onsite restaurant was surprisingly delicious, and the golf course was such a treat to play on.

Food

Dishoom - We’d heard a lot about Dishoom, both that it was amazing and that it was overrated. After having been, I’d say it falls somewhere in between. It wasn’t bad, but I definitely think you can find better, especially in London. Our favorite thing there was the Vada Pav and the chai!

Colonel Saab - We originally had reservations for the Ambassador’s Clubhouse, but London happened to be having a train strike and we didn’t want to sit in 45 minutes of traffic in a hot taxi. Our hotel recommended Colonel Saab, which was a close walk nearby and it was amazing. We got the Chicken Ghee Roast Kori, the Gutti Vankaya (eggplant), Garlic Naan, and Tandoor Roti. I’d highly recommend.

In the countryside, we just ate at our hotel ( The Bowood) for dinner and breakfast the next day. We didn’t really know what to expect from traditional British food, but it exceeded our expectations!

Sightseeing

London is such a fun city to walk around! We saw Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalger Square, and the surrounding area all in one evening. A little birdie visited us at coffee the next morning, before our train to the countryside.

We didn’t have much time for sightseeing in the countryside aside from the wedding, but we did walk the grounds of the Bowood Hotel to see the old estate after breakfast one morning! The estate has a really interesting history - it was originally built as a hunting lodge in 1725 and later became the seat of the Earls of Shelburne (later Marquesses of Lansdowne) in 1754 and has been in the Lansdowne family for over 250 years. It was used as a hospital during the world wars, after which the main house became too dilapidated to use. The building that you can tour today were originally the stables.

October should be a fun month! Even though I’ve lived in Austin for a long time, I’ve never been to ACL, but hubby managed to get tickets through work this year, which is exciting.

In addition to the Indian festival Diwali and Halloween, we also celebrate our “dating anniversary” and “engagement anniversary” in October! I’d love to know - if you’re married, do you still celebrate these other milestones each year?

Last but not the least, someone new is joining my team this month at work this month, which will add extra “people management” responsibilities to my plate, but should hopefully eventually make my overall workload manageable too.

Hello and happy Sunday!

It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? Work has been kicking my ass and I haven’t had any motivation to use my remaining free time in the evenings or weekends to do more work on my laptop. How do some of you balance it? Crazy.

Anyways, it’s finally a long weekend and I don’t have any work to catch up on, for once! Substack finally has my attention again :)

As I think ahead to fall and winter fashion, I’m trying to be more intentional this year (shocking, I know). It’s too easy to fall into the habit of picking out a few cute pieces for the upcoming season and yet still feeling uninspired when it’s time to get dressed. I want to avoid having a bunch of stuff, but nothing to wear.

This fall and winter, I hope to only add pieces that meet three conditions:

1. There is a specific gap in my wardrobe that this piece will fill. The idea is to avoid categories like “basics” or “cashmere sweaters”, but instead think of descriptive phrases such as “deep red boxy cashmere cardigan”.

2. I have a place to wear this piece in this upcoming season - no aspirational or fantasy pieces or pieces that I’ve bought because they’re on sale and I could maybe wear them to someone’s wedding next year.

3. This piece has been on my mind for a while and elicits a feeling. The goal isn’t to identify all of the gaps in my wardrobe and fill them…that would be impossible. The goal is to focus on the pieces I haven’t been able to stop thinking about and determine if any of those fit into my life and my budget!

You may notice that there aren’t specific conditions around buying secondhand vs buying new, buying real vs synthetic materials, or buying trends vs classics. Although I generally prefer real fabrics, will always browse secondhand sites, and usually like classics, I didn’t want to set those limits on myself for this season. If the item I buy is one that meets my three conditions, chances are that it will get a lot of wear, which will mean it is a sustainable purchase for me.

The first item that met my three conditions this season, was a gold or brass finished Western Belt. Although I have a few functional belts in my closet from my business casual days, I don’t usually wear a belt in a casual or dressy setting to complete an outfit. Winters are super mild in Texas and I’m often just wearing jeans and a top; I haven’t been able to stop thinking about adding a western belt to that outfit combo to add a little character.

Here are the belts that popped up in my search:

1. Aureum No.15 Belt* ($188): On sale for Labor Day, this was the first belt that popped up in my search. I loved the engraving on the hardware that gave it a more western vibe. However, since it was final sale and I had also read some mixed reviews about Aureum on Reddit, I decided to pass.

2. Khaite Benny Belt with Studs* ($740): It’s always fun to get inspiration from pricy designer brands, even if I could never see myself spending over $700 on a belt! Although I loved the gold studs, I felt the studs made it too much of a statement for me at the moment.

3. Khaite Benny Belt* ($490): I loved the clean lines on this belt and felt that this was the most neutral of the bunch. Having seen the engraving on the Aureum belt though, I knew I wanted something a little more Western.

4. Ralph Lauren Metal Accent Belt* ($598): I loved the look of this belt and thought it could look so cute over a dress or skirt. If I ever wanted to fully lean into Western, this is what I’d go for! However, I think I could find a belt like this for much cheaper, especially at vintage stores across Texas.

5. Ralph Lauren Tooled Vachetta Belt* ($1600????): I don’t know who is paying $1600 for a belt, but in case you are in the market, this one is really cute. I liked that the hardware had silver and gold and little four leaf clovers, for good luck! If you buy this, post a pic so I can see what it looks like!

6. Aritzia Western Belt* ($88): Spoiler alert, I bought this in black with golden hardware! Similar to the Aureum belt, I loved the engraving on the hardware. It was also priced very well compared to the others I’d seen.

7. Madewell Studded Western Belt* ($88): This belt is a really great in-between for those that want the studded look, but don’t want full on studs like the Khaite Benny Belt. I almost ended up getting this, but decided to dip my toe in the water with the Aritzia belt first. It’s also at a great price point!

8. Madewell Eyelet Belt* ($78): Another version of studs, but less in your face. I liked that the “holes” of the belt are the eyelets, so you could buy a size that fits at your hips and easily tighten to fit around your waist.

9. Madewell Cow Belt* ($88): For when you want to fully lean in! This style was personally a little too trendy for me, but if cow print has been living in your head rent free, this is a good one.

10. Alberta Ferretti (Secondhand via TheRealReal) ($84): It’s a little tough to search for a “vibe” on TheRealReal. You can filter for things like category or condition, but at some point you’re just going to be clicking through pages and pages of items to find what you want. When it comes to belts, there are a ton of Gucci belts cluttering up the site, but you can find goodies like this scattered throughout. This one was bought by someone within a day and was too studded for me, but just wanted to show you a secondhand example!

Hubby and I went to a cocktail + champagne bar called “Daydreamer” in East Austin this week, which has an allday pizza truck on the back patio.

The vibes were very cute, but for describing themselves as a champagne bar, I was surprised that they only had one champagne that could be ordered by the glass, with 4 others that could be ordered by the bottle. It would be SO cute if they did a mini champagne flight?? I ended up ordering a glass of the sparkling chenin, which was good.

Allday pizza is cool because you can order pizza by the slice and try a bunch of different flavors - our favorite was the spicy marg. I was most excited for the cacio pepe, but it was pretty bland and I wouldn’t get it again.

The combined experience of Daydreamer + allday pizza is a 4/5; I think separately they would each be a 3.5/5.

Last week, I wrote about my hunt to find jeans that fit. Well, of the three styles I ordered, the Aritzia Marlo jeans* were the perfect relaxed vibes. They’re made from a lighter denim fabric and will get a lot of wear this spring. I can’t wait to style them for you! The The Farrah Hi-rise Wide Jean* were a tighter fit and the Abercrombie High Rise 90s Relaxed Jean* had a super high rise, so I sent them back. I ordered a few additional sneaky linen items from Aritzia since I was placing an order anyways. I have this Regal Linen Vest* in gray and I picked it up in white and black. I also ordered these linen pants* in brown - they are a little long but fit well with heels! I wore the black vest and brown pants to Daydreamer.

I also popped into a Sephora last week because I wanted to swatch the new Merit lip liners* and lip glosses* and am a complete idiot because I didn’t take any pictures of the swatches for the newsletter - I was just that genuinely excited and curious about the formula! My impressions were that they were really silky and forgiving, similar to the Rhode liner*, but much skinnier which may make it easier to line lips. Colors wise, Beverly Hills showed up as a light pink on my hand, Bespoke and Coupe were both medium pinks, and the remaining 5 were varying shades of brown. I’ll probably pick up Beverly Hills and one other shade during the Sephora sale in a few weeks!

I was also curious about the new shades of the Complexion Stick. Sand is my tan shade and Ecru is my lighter shade and the newer shades weren’t that different to justify picking up another shade. However, I had a thought, wouldn’t it be cool if Merit launched double sided complexion sticks that could be customized based upon your summer and winter shades? That way, I’d just need to purchase or travel with one stick, rather than carry two around?

Although we see a lot of tall women across our runways, magazine covers, and e-commerce websites, women in the United States are much shorter, on average.

In their Vital and Health Statistics report from 2021, the CDC found that the average height of 5,510 females ages 20 and over surveyed across race and age from 2015-2018 was 63.5 inches or 5 feet and 3.5 inches. The 5th percentile of height is 59 inches or 4ft and 11 inches and the 95th percentile is 5ft and 8 inches.

Knowing this, why are so many of the pants on the market only made for tall women? If brands can offer customers the ability select the width/circumference of tops and bottoms (indicating the ability to sew different measurements), why do so few brands offer customization for inseam length?

As someone who is 5’2”, I find this the most frustrating while shopping for jeans. Although a lot of brands sell “crop” or “ankle” versions, not every style is available in these shorter inseams. Plus, if I buy an “ankle” version of a jean, it’s often full length on me and doesn’t hit at my ankle. Sometimes brands will sell a “crop” version of a regular style, but it often has an unfinished hem, which is supposed to be a “style feature” but just screams laziness to me - did brands just make a bunch of the regular styles and chop the hems off to make them cropped??

Perhaps brands think, what’s the big deal? We list our measurements in our description and you can just double check the inseams before placing an order. You could also take the jeans to the tailor to alter them to your measurements. Well, that sounds exhausting. Could you imagine if you went to buy a shirt and it was only available in one size and you didn’t have the ability to select small/medium/large but just had to read the measurements to see if it would fit? What if most of the shirts you purchased were oversized and you had to take them to the tailor before you could wear them? It is a poor experience to ask consumers to do this extra work before placing an order, especially if the range of heights of our population is on average shorter than the models selling the clothes.

Why am I ranting about this? Well, I purged my jean collection last fall, keeping 4 pairs that felt most comfortable on me at the time (and two pairs that are still a bit too snug but very much my style). The two pairs of Re/Done Stovepipe Jeans* have stretched out quite a bit and now just look a little baggy and loose, like mom jeans but not in a cute way (plus…raw hems), leaving the two Citizens of Humanity pairs* (similar linked). The CoH pairs still fit great and are my favorite jeans in my collection, but they are both “barrel leg” jeans and I’ve been craving having a straight leg jean in my collection again. I don’t want to spend a ton of money on these jeans, not knowing how my weight will fluctuate, but would prioritize fit over cost, if required. This gap in my wardrobe led me to start online jean shopping and I spent a few hours in this rabbit hole.

Thankfully, there are a few brands that have been a bright spot in a sea of 30” inseams. I thought I’d share them with you today and share what I’ve picked up to try from each - I’ll definitely share what I end up keeping in a future post.

1. Abercrombie - I love their Sloane collection dress pants and the shorter inseam length is the perfect fit for me. I love that Abercrombie offers shorter, short, regular, long, and extra long lengths! I’ve ordered the High Rise 90s Relaxed Jean* ($110) in the “Medium Marble” wash.

2. Aritzia (Denim Forum) - Although not every jean sold at Aritzia offers customizable inseams, the Denim Forum brand does offer some options, although the colors are limited in the short or tall heights. I’ve ordered the The Farrah Hi-rise Wide Jean* ($110) in the “7 yrs bleu taboo” wash and the The Marlo High Rise Loose* ($110) in the “5 yrs kiss n tell bl” wash.

It feels good to be writing again. I pulled an Irish exit from Substack at the beginning of the year, because life got busy. Not only was I in the final stretches of wedding planning with some unexpected bumps and twists, but things at work had started to get incredibly toxic and I found myself lucky enough to be in a recruiting process for a new job. It was a tough few weeks, but I’m happy to say that I’m on the other side now. Our wedding was an incredibly special weekend that we’ll cherish forever, I really like my new job so far, and life just feels lighter!

Austin Bites

Birdies is always incredible. We we had a chance to pop in during their recent “Aiello’s” pop-up, which was a pre-set menu inspired by food that the chef’s grandpa used to cook for his family. The menu was really simple, but delicious - the star of the show was the Caesar salad. Birdies doesn’t offer reservations, which funnily enough makes it more accessible compared to other Austin restaurants that are completely booked out for months. We arrived right after it opened at around 5:30PM and didn’t have to wait long to be seated. 4.5/5 stars.

Oko is a new Filipino and Southeast Asian fusion restaurant on the eastside. We ordered a couple of items from the menu and liked the Hamachi appetizer and Pak Pak (chicken wings) the best. Overall, we liked the flavors of the food but felt like all of the items were very rich and heavy. Vibes in the restaurant were very cute, but they were blasting music and I felt like I was yelling. 3.5/5 stars.

What I’ve been wearing and loving:

• I’ve been reaching for the A.Emery suede flip flops* constantly - they help dress down a fancier outfit and are perfect for the milder Texas winter and spring temperatures. They’re currently on sale at 40% off too!

• I purchased the Abercrombie Sloan Pant* for a work trip a few years ago, but they’ve surprisingly been getting a lot more wear in my everyday life too. I love that they make casual outfits look a bit more polished and elevated, but they’re still super comfortable to wear. Plus, the “short” length is perfect for my 5’2” height. I’ve got the dark brown and navy colors, but might pick up a lighter beige they’ve got available on their website for spring.

• This Staud shoulder bag* is really great value for money, in my opinion. The suede is good quality, the gold finishing is the perfect match for the gold toned jewelry I wear, and it’s got the perfect slouchy vibe.

• I wore the green Sézane top to dinner and the lady sitting next to me complimented me on it - it felt so lovely to receive a random compliment from a stranger and I definitely want to do that more this year! The green version is sold out, but they’ve got a lovely white version* and a maroon version* on their site at the moment. I think white would be perfect for spring!

Recent Purchases:

• Eberjey Silk Pajamas* - I wore this set while getting ready on my wedding day! I’d always loved the idea of wearing silk, but I wanted to make sure I could realistically wear it again. I loved this set as it’s machine washable and not as revealing as other bridal slips or pajamas can be. The buttons made it easy to slip into my wedding saree without ruining hair or makeup.

• Jimmy Choo Skye 70 Satin Mules* - When searching for my wedding shoes, I knew I wanted to wear a simple low heel, as I’d need to step out of my shoes for the Indian wedding ceremony and I didn’t want to fuss around with the straps or be dragging my saree on the ground. I was searching for a timeless look that I could wear again and after searching through what felt like hundreds of options, I finally stumbled upon these Jimmy Choo mules and they were perfect. I’ve linked the white version here, but I actually purchased an emerald green that was on sale at the time!! I can’t wait to rewear these for special occasions and milestones in the future ✨

• Mac Eyeliner Pen* - I stumbled across an older Allana Davison video (now I can’t remember which one it was) in which she was raving about this eyeliner* because it had great lasting power but could easily be washed off with warm water. I love and swear by the Lancome Artliner Eyeliner* for these reasons and I decided to give the Mac eyeliner pen* a try, especially considering it was $11 cheaper than the Lancome one. Unfortunately, it’s good, not great - I found that the Mac pen has a little bit of fallout at the end of the day, which doesn’t happen with my Lancome one. I have pretty oily lids though, so perhaps it would work better for you if your lids are pretty dry!

My entire Instagram feed was filled with content creators posting screenshots of the TikTok ban. Were you guys devastated? Where are people going to go next? This feels like a good time to share my Instagram handle, in case any of you are popping back on that platform. I haven’t been using it consistently, but this may be a good time to shake off the cobwebs.

I had two noteworthy outfits from the past week I wanted to share with y’all:

I paired it with White Vejas* (cpf: $3.30), which I keep forgetting to take pictures with. 😂

The Sezane Archive sale launched this morning - I had a quick scroll earlier and nothing really impressed me. I almost bought the Betty Cardigan but I personally don’t like pockets over the chest area so I decided not to. I know others really like this style, so I wanted to bring it to your attention as there are still a few sizes available. Did any of you purchase anything?

On the flipside, the Doen “Snow Day” sale did really impress me! I’ve been on the hunt for a cashmere cable knit sweater and when I saw this one*, I had to add to cart. That one is sold out, but they do still have a similar one in cotton and a dark gray in merino wool. A cold front arrived in Austin on Monday and it was freezing - we must have brought the cooler temps back with us from Boston. I wore gray Lulu Align Leggings in the Extra Short Length (worn 1 time, cpf is $99) and a blue long sleeve Lulu top (worn 1 time, cpf is $39).

As a quick note, I’ve mentioned before that I haven’t tracked the cost per fit (“cpf”) of loungewear/athleisure historically. I’m trying to change that this year, but this means that I’ve got a ton of loungewear/athleisure that I’ve worn a ton that I have no record of wearing. To keep things easy, I’m just “resetting the clock” and will be tracking the cpf of these items from this year onwards. So, although I love and have worn these mini flare leggings a bunch, for the sake of cpf, this is my first time wearing them.

I picked up these Lulu Soft Jersey Straight-Leg Mid-Rise Pant (worn 1 time, cpf is $59) in the short length during the “end of year scores” sale in December. They are super comfortable and now I wish I picked up a few more colors. The short length is sold out, but there are still a few sizes left in the regular length. I wore it with a pink Everlane Box Cut Tee (worn 2 times, cpf is $10)!

We were meeting our wedding planner for a walkthrough over lunch on Friday, so I decided to dress up a little. I finally had time to do my hair and I felt like a new person! We traveled to Houston yesterday to meet with our caterer for our final food tasting! Taking these poll results into account, as well as my own 2024 style reflections, I’ve put together the following Style Resolutions for 2025:

1. Get dressed every day, even if that just means changing from one set of loungewear to another set. Take a picture of the outfit to document and track cost per fit when you can. (I don’t typically track cost per fit for loungewear or athletic wear because I don’t remember how much the items cost, although I may consider documenting an “estimate” so I can have some directional data). I’ll definitely be sharing this closet journal with you!

2. Shop secondhand clothing when possible. To help with this, I’ve removed all of my “favorites” lists from sites like Shopbop and NetaPorter. I’d amassed quite a bit of favorites and was constantly feeding that dopamine hit by browsing those websites each week. Whenever a sale dropped, I’d feel the pressure to buy something, “because it was on sale”. A $400 sweater discounted to $300 is still a lot of money to spend on a impulse purchase!

3. Share one “financial deep dive” a quarter. These take a lot of time to put together, but I do enjoy learning about different companies! A quarterly financial deep dive feels like an achievable goal. My January and February are pretty busy with wedding planning, so I’ll likely share the first one in March.

I can’t believe the year is almost over. I hope you had a relaxing holiday season.

I was reflecting on my annual cost per fit and to be honest, I’ve done a bad job of tracking my outfits in the latter half of the year. One of my goals for next year is to improve this, for two reasons: 1) to get a fuller picture of cost per wear 2) tracking clothes inspires me to put together polished outfits for the day.

Here is what I wore the most in 2024:

1. Adidas Sambas: Worn at least 14 times (14 times in 2024), cost per fit is $8.35.

2. Veja V-10 Sneakers: Worn at least 47 times (13 times in 2024), cost per fit is $3.51.

3. Citizens of Humanity Black Curve Jeans: Worn at least 19 times (10 times in 2024), cost per fit is $6.30

4. ReDone Blue Jeans: Worn at least 23 times (9 times in 2024), cost per fit is $8.64.

5. Citizens of Humanity Blue Curve Jeans: Worn at least 10 times (7 times in 2024), cost per fit is $13.54.

Key Takeaways

• Comfort (jeans and sneakers) was key for me in 2024 - I don’t see this changing. Making a mental note to continue investing in pieces that emphasize comfort.

• I spent part of this year on an unintentional “low-buy”, which was great for my wallet and financial goals, but a bit boring for creativity. I ended up spending around $2000 on clothes this year, which will be low for some and high for others. We were in Manchester, Vermont over the weekend for a quick holiday getaway with my fiance’s family & friends. It’s such a special tradition and always so much fun! We’ll be in Boston for the next two weeks and I’m so excited to take some time off of work and soak up some relaxation. A quick update today:

1. Willoughby’s Depot Eatery

Willoughby’s Depot Eatery has the best Cider Donuts I’ve ever tried and the store has the cutest picture wall of beloved pets 💗 We also tried Blueberry this year and they were delicious too! We make it a point to stop by each year.

2. The best lounge set

I have been living in loungewear all weekend - one of my favorite sets is the Vuori Boyfriend Jogger and Halo Crew. I do wish they would release more colors - I always feel like stock is low for non-black sets. What are you faves from Vuori?

I’m back from India! It was a jam packed and super fun trip. We visited 3 cities: Mumbai, Lonavala, and Hyderabad and visited family, did some sightseeing, and shopping in each. Pictured below are a few snippets from my travels - India is so beautiful. I also have all of my wedding outfits now!! I finally feel like a bride :)

It’s been a busy week since we got back! On Thursday, I took a <24 hour trip for my company’s holiday party. I brought everything I needed in a large handbag - I’ve never packed so minimally! I wore an old red Tory Burch dress, Sezane trench, Adidas Sambas on the plane and changed into Aquazzura heels later.

Yesterday evening, we celebrated my fiance’s birthday early at our favorite Sushi spot. I wore a Sezane knit dress, Veja sneakers, and my Celine Ava shoulder bag.
