What if you were lied to all your life that a square was a circle? Oh yes, you were told, it’s natural to have contrary thoughts, but you must not be deceived by appearances; those things that look like squares are not. They are merely apparent squares. And in reality, you are politely informed, they not only are circles, but they must be, because an all-encompassing Theory of Circumfusion requires them to be, and you must believe the Theory of Circumfusion.

And what if you did believe? Despite all that was in you; despite what you instinctively and empirically knew, what if you believed? What if?

Imagine that you really bought the lie. You began to see reality not as circles and squares, but as circles and the illusion of squares. And suppose over time you trained yourself, through constant reminder that what you see as squares are not squares, but circles; you actually saw only circles. Now where others see circles and squares you see only circles and imperfect circles. In fact, you find you are somewhat proud of the fact that you seem to be one of the very few people that can understand the Theory of Circumfusion to the extent that you see reality so wonderfully enveloped with circles. You teach with grand authority that your discipline is that of the study of circles that give the appearance of being squares. In fact, your reality becomes so self-evidently true you almost forget that others still see squares.

But you can’t forget. Picture your constant chagrin, if not downright irritation, at the constant use among lay people and uninformed scientists of the language of squareness. To make matters worse, squareness is always insisted on by the “straight” and “square” crowd, those who speak in vexatious pleonasms such as reference to “straight-edged squares” (as if there are any other kind). They are not squares! you want to shout, they are circles that only have the appearance of squareness! You try your best to be nice, but you find yourself blogging about imbeciles and the mentally ill who adamantly refuse to believe the scientific Theory of Circumfusion and persist in the delusion of the existence of true squareness.

Finally, you hit upon the perfect answer. A brilliant solution! The answer, so stunningly elegant a resolution that you are surprised it has not already been tried, involves simply remove the term “square” and the concept of squareness from the vocabulary! Simply deem the concept of squareness “inappropriate” and require that no one ever again use the term “square” when speaking, writing, or, you hope, even thinking about reality. Certainly then, you hope, all reality would be seen properly as circles, and the Theory of Circumfusion would finally be free of all the endless parade of pesky detractors.

Sound absurd? It is absurd. But absurdity is the natural destination of wrong ideas pressed against an unyielding reality. And such absurdity represents the pinnacle of thinking darkened by evolutionists, where a reality plain to all stands starkly against an insistent muddle all too plain. The problem for evolutionists lies with the term “design”. The term best describes everything we see in nature, but, insist evolutionists, it simply cannot be; The Theory will not allow it. Never mind what your eyes see, never mind what your hands touch, never mind what your ears hear, you must, as atheist co-discoverer of DNA Francis Crick insists biologist do, constantly remind yourself that what you see was not designed but evolved.

On the question of design, Darwinists from Darwin to Dawkins struggle with language developed for reality as we see it, to communicate reality as they wish us to see it. For years, in addition to preaching the gospel of “apparent” design, Richard Dawkins tried a muddled attempt at coining the term designoids to describe the Darwinian requirement of non-designed design. His concept of designoids, like most of his truth claims, not only reeks of tautological nonsense (designoids are things that look designed, and things that look designed are designoids), it sounds dorky. By his definition he is a designoid. So be it, the rest of us will pass on such rubbish demanded by science beholden to an imagined reality. And “apparent” design? Dawkins seems too miss that deeming design “apparent” is not only linguistically problematic, it is a scientifically useless contradiction in terms. Something is either designed or it is not. And like knowing someone is “apparently pregnant,” knowing something is “apparently designed” imparts no useful knowledge.

Consider an evolutionist’s logic found in the pages of the gloriously serious-sounding Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research. Here, years ago, Columbia University’s W.J. Bock surrendered to an Orwellian coward’s solution: simply eliminate the troublesome “D” word altogether. Rather than have biologists distracted repeating the mantra, “it is not designed, it is not designed, it is not designed,” Bock’s solution is to remove even the “concept of design” from all “biological explanations.” Design is “inappropriate” in biology, according to Bock, and “should not be used in evolutionary theory.” Bock’s necessary retreat to absurdity is doubly ineffective, as it does not solve his problem. Because, as he recognized indirectly by admitting that “substitute terms are awkward and not really informative,” if you remove the concept of design from biology, there is nothing informative left! All is awkwardness because biology is design. As atheist Richard Dawkins admits, “biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.”

Biological things look designed! Remove design and there’s nothing left to look at in biology. But importantly (and correctly), according to Bock and others, keep design and there’s nothing to talk about in evolutionary theory. This dilemma is exactly what muddled Darwin himself: keep the theory in spite of the empirical evidence, or yield to the evidence and ditch the theory. Unwilling to forsake their chosen theory, and unable to marshal language appropriate to Darwinian surreality, Darwinists have decided to change what they can in vain hopes of altering what they can’t. Like little gods attempting to remake nature into their own image, Darwinists believe that by banning the term “design” from explanations in biology, design itself will not need explaining.

Good luck. But here’s a workable compromise: drop the term “design” in evolutionary theory where it makes no sense and keep it in biology where it makes perfect sense. The two really have little need for each other. Biology can continue to operate (as it does, truth be told) in terms of design. And because there is no English word for “apparently-designed-yet-actually-unintelligently-caused” with respect to observed objects, evolutionary theory can adopt a more proper substitute term: adesign. Adesign is quite simply the absence of design. Adesign leads to adesignism, which, like its linguistic counterparts atheism and agnosticism, is a belief system defined by what it denies. By creating a clear contrast between design and adesign, the new terminology precisely captures the heart of the origins inquiry: nature exhibits either some design which is true design requiring intelligence, or all adesign which is simply an occurrence requiring no intelligence. There is no other logical choice.

Evolutionists will resist the term adesign, because ironically it is too perfect of a description, and will drive the kind of clarity they resist to continue hiding behind an obfuscation of pseudo-science and religious motivation. Bock himself, for example, laments about design that, “the term carries with it too many undesirable connotations, such as the existence of a creator, and should not be used in evolutionary theory.”

Undesirable connotations? Perhaps, just as to one who believed a lie that he could fly might find the law of gravity burdened with too many undesirable connotations. But with the new terms of debate, science controls: a designist is one who believes the design evident in nature is exactly that—true design. An adesignist is one who holds that what others see as design in nature is not design of any kind; it is simply an unlikely occurrence of unintelligent natural processes. Game on! Let the science begin.

And for those like Bock who apparently have religious motivations for their views, the new terminology of adesign has the added benefit of ferreting out the hidden religious component of the debate, and forcing clarity at a scientific level. A designist need not be a theist, but he or she may be a theist without inconsistency. Likewise, an adesignist is not required to be an atheist, but he or she may be an atheist without inconsistency. Further, the new terminology will drive logical precision directly at the point of greatest confusion, the supposed conflict between religion and science. A religious designist who claims to be a scientific adesignist (e.g., a theistic evolutionist) would seem to be taking a contradictory position, and should be required to explain. Likewise, a scientific adesignist who claims to be a religious designist (e.g., a Darwinist claiming to believe in a creative God) must explain this position clearly, because such a position is contradictory on its face.

Bock concluded his paper by saying: “Actually the living world as we see it is the result of chance because all of the attributes of these organisms evolved and the process of evolution is stochastic. To paraphrase a well-known statement by Einstein, God apparently does play with dice.” Aside from the blatantly sophomoric tautology posing as a scientific explanation here (”the living world is the result of chance because all the attributes evolved by chance”), one must wonder—why do evolutionists care about God, much less his dice?

Adesignists risk embarrassing themselves talking about God for one reason: to keep the confusion alive regarding the Darwin-busting fact of design in nature. Confusion is the ally of a wrong worldview, and a person that denies design in biology, particularly for fear of the “connotations” of a designer, must rely on silly thoughts about God and dice as they spin their worldview in a whirlwind of illogic and ever-growing deception.

Does that surprise you? It should! How can the exact same way of thinking be called good science in one case and silly religion in the other?

Radio telescopes hunt for special coded signals from space aliens. That is called real science. But when scientists use powerful microscopes and find coded information and amazing tiny machines inside cells, many people say that is not science. Why the difference?

Scientists with SETI are allowed to say, “This code means intelligence made it.” But when other scientists find real coded information inside every living cell, they get called crazy for saying the same thing.

Why does this happen?

Modern science has made a strong promise to something called naturalism. This idea says only natural causes are allowed—no smart designer is ever allowed as an answer, even if the evidence points that way. Because of this rule, scientists can look for space aliens but cannot consider a designer for life on Earth.

Charles Darwin, who started the idea of evolution, was more honest. In his book, he spent a lot of time talking about problems with his own theory. He said if anyone could show a complex body part that could not be built step by step, his theory would fall apart.

Today, many scientists who follow Darwin do the opposite. They do not want anyone to question Darwin’s idea. They use rules, courts, and pressure to stop criticism in schools. Darwin himself would probably get in trouble today for the honest questions he asked!

Michael Behe’s Discovery

A scientist named Michael Behe looked very closely at tiny parts inside cells. He found complex “machines” made of many pieces that all need to work together. He calls this irreducible complexity. If you remove even one piece, the whole machine stops working. It could not have been built slowly, one tiny step at a time, because the half-finished versions would not work at all.

This matches exactly what Darwin said would break his theory.

Instead of welcoming this test of the idea (like real science should), many scientists attacked Behe. They called him names and said he was just doing religion, even though he used real observations from inside cells.

The Big Double Standard

• Looking for coded messages from aliens in space? Cool science!

• Finding coded messages and working machines inside cells? Impossible!

The difference is not in the evidence. It is in what scientists are allowed to believe. They have decided ahead of time that a designer is not allowed.

This mix of Darwin’s ideas and naturalism hurts real science. Students and parents can see the problem: It makes no sense to accept design in space but reject the same kind of evidence inside living things.

True science should follow the evidence wherever it leads. When scientists put a belief system first, they stop being good scientists. The search for truth should be more important than protecting any one idea.

Surprised? You should be. How can the exact same methodology be both touted as scientific and dismissed as religious nuttery? Are radio telescopes searching for Morse code-like evidence of space aliens inherently scientific, while electron microscopes discovering source code-like evidence of design in the cell are not? Why are alien hunters with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) permitted to infer intelligence if ever they find evidence of coded information, but microbiologists who actually find such evidence extensively embedded in the cell are lambasted for inferring the same cause?

An honest assessment of our odd state of affairs explains the discrepancy by revealing a most unpleasant fact of modern science: an unholy alliance between institutions of science and the philosophy of naturalism. Science illogically rejects evidence of cellular design because it has taken upon itself the mantle of godless (but not Godless) naturalism, deeming all non-material causes non-scientific, regardless of the evidence. By unnecessarily championing the cause of a belief system, science has been duped into fronting for one set of philosophers while being derisively dogmatic against another. Darwin would be disappointed to find his eponymous ism has driven such a venomous schism.

Ironically, science evolved to its current state of complicity between Darwinism and naturalism by scientists exhibiting behavior exactly opposite that of Darwin. Despite all the evil heaped upon Darwin for the results of his legacy, Darwin himself was an honest scientist. Consider, for example, that in Origin of Species Darwin openly welcomed challenges to his theory. Taking almost half of his book to do so, he recognized and faced head-on numerous “difficulties” with his theory—difficulties that remain today. But unlike Darwin, current Darwinists enforce their ism like any good ism worth enforcing by suppressing the exact criticism Darwin welcomed. By political power, judicial rulings, and professional threats, Darwinists today have effectively shut down any criticism or critical analysis of Darwinism in the classroom—Darwin’s own critical analysis would land him in court were he to teach it today! Criticism is strictly off limits due to Darwinism’s vaulted position—almost unique in science—as non-challengeable dogma. Not un-challengeable, mind you, but non-challengeable. It is not so much that evidence, particularly cellular evidence, does not point to a designer; it simply cannot.

The irony is doubled, and the complicity redoubled, by the work of molecular biologist Michael Behe. Professor of Biochemistry at Lehigh University and author of the book Darwin’s Black Box, Professor Behe’s work beautifully responds to Darwin’s famous challenge: “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.” Although framed so as to require proving a negative, Darwin’s challenge is nevertheless a good scientist’s attempt to pose a testable hypothesis. Holding his theory tentatively (a trait that defines good science), Darwin provided future scientists with a way to test his theory (a trait that defines a good scientist) and to keep his theory from becoming presupposition-enforced dogma (a trait that defines good religion).

What scientist would not want to engage in the scientific activity of theory testing? Apparently many—contemporary academia is fraught with those bent on protecting Darwin from his own challenge. The rhetoric of fear sounds from anthropology to zoology because institutions of science are filled with those who are Darwinists first and scientists second.

Those like Professor Behe who are scientists first are the most to be feared by Darwinists. Behe studied code-built and operated complex cellular machinery (a feature Darwin never imagined) and, based on his observations, formulated a scientific hypothesis that certain complex features of the cell could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications. Specifically, in addition to the clear evidence of coded information in DNA, Behe found molecular “machines” that show signs of what he calls “irreducible complexity.”

By irreducible complexity, Behe means a single system composed of several interacting parts that contribute to the basic function, where the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning. An irreducibly complex system cannot be produced gradually by slight, successive modifications of a precursor system, since any precursor to an irreducibly complex system is by definition nonfunctional. Since natural selection requires a function to select, an irreducibly complex biological system, if there is such a thing, would have to arise as an integrated unit for natural selection to have anything to act on. With no reason to evolve separately in numerous, successive, slight modifications, the parts of the machines Behe found seemed to indicate an “organ” meeting Darwin’s challenge. Science at its best, one would think.

Think again. Those like Professor Behe who attempt to buck Darwinism’s blood-brother bond to naturalism can expect to be pilloried in the scientific literature, popular and unpopular alike. Even though asked for by their own patron saint, Behe’s scientific response to Darwin’s personal challenge has been ridiculed by contemporary Darwinists at every turn, with one California professor calling Behe a “screwball.”

In Behe’s words, critics of his book and his concept of irreducible complexity have remarkably similar reactions, varying in intensity depending on the personality of the people involved. The first reaction of most critics is to say, “Well, this is just thinly veiled creationism.” In reviews of his book, scientists often speak about the first chapters of Genesis and the Arkansas Creation Trial, none of which he mentions in his book. Darwinists simply cannot see a distinction between arriving at a conclusion simply from observation of the physical world, as a scientist is supposed to do, and arriving at a conclusion based on scripture or religious beliefs. Because Behe’s material evidence led him to conclusions unsanctioned by the high priesthood of Darwinism, his science ran afoul of the anointed dogma of naturalism, relegating him to the realm of religious nuts. Irony unbounded.

Perhaps if the religious screwball had a catchy acronym like SICI, the Search for Intracellular Intelligence, he would get more respect. Perhaps not. Even though Behe’s and SETI’s criteria for detecting intelligent design are essentially the same, respect, in this case, is less a function of the criteria than it is of the assumed source of design. Unknown intelligent being designing coded signals in outer space? Cool. Unknown intelligent being designing coded signals and complex machinery inside a cell? Impossible. Science has ruled out such a notion in the name of its illicit complicity with naturalism, deeming such philosophically impossible ideas as silly speculation at best and dangerous doctrine at worst.

Dangerous doctrine indeed. Darwinists lose credibility by the day as their adopted creed jeopardizes the integrity of science itself. By baptizing the scientific method in the water of naturalism, the altered method of religious Darwinists turns off objective onlookers—students, parents, and browbeaten educators easily perceive the obtuseness of denying cellular machinery (not to mention confirmed coded information in DNA) as strong evidence of intelligent design. To reject confirmed material evidence showing that life on Earth may be a product of an intelligent being while simultaneously looking for evidence of the same kind as evidence of intelligent beings elsewhere in the universe is, at minimum, a profound contradiction in scientific reasoning. But reason is the enemy of a science that adopts a creed, and the creed of naturalism—which Darwinism requires to survive against the evidence—is a greater science-stopper than any implications of a non-material cause ever have been or ever will be.

Like irreducible complexity, in which the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning, naturalism and Darwinism are the ultimate example of irreducible complicity: one cannot survive long without the other. Without an insistence on naturalism, Darwinism has no defense against the growing weight of material evidence, and without Darwinism, naturalism loses its standing as a coherent philosophy, its worldview stripped of a creation story. But science daily delivers blows to that creation story, and while those who are Darwinists first and scientists second will no doubt contrive to survive, those who drop the duplicity for scientific objectivity will find reason to thrive.

We are all creationists. Some credit nature alone as the architect of existence; others point to God. But to deny any creator is to deny reality itself. Nothing springs from nothing; no made thing emerges without a maker. Something—or someone—must account for our presence here. What, or who, can we logically infer as the cause? And how might we glimpse the truth?

Despite the fervent certainty on both sides, absolute proof will forever elude us, rendering any irrefutable explanation a hoped-for impossibility. Our best path forward is to allow evidence to lead to the best rational inference: What does the evidence in the created world most reasonably suggest about our creation?

Like forensic scientists piecing together evidence left at a death scene without witnesses, we examine life’s origins by considering the evidence left at a “life scene” without eyewitnesses. Are we a cosmic accident? Or the deliberate act of an intelligent agent?

On this question, evolutionist creationists often demand from Biblical creationists: “Show me your evidence for creation by God!” They assume their own view rests on unassailable evidential proof, while Biblical creationism floats on faith alone. My response is unchanging: We all share the same evidence. No hidden “creationist evidence vault” exists from which secret evidence can be drawn out to silence skeptics. Recall early astronomers arguing about the nature of our solar system: Identical evidence of planetary motion led some to insist the sun orbits Earth, others that Earth orbits the sun. Same data available to all; opposite explanations dividing all.

How do reasonable minds diverge so sharply on the question of creation? As in the days of the early astronomers, the answer lies not in the evidence alone, but in the worldview behind the eyes viewing it. Nature’s book reads like a book of cosmic Rorschach tests—its evidence interpreted as true representations of reality based on the filtering eyes of the observer.

Rather than the evidence itself, diverging views stem from preconceptions about reality. Believe the universe centers on Earth? You’ll “see” the sun circling it and dismiss alternative explanations as confirmation bias of wrong beliefs. Believe blind nature alone created living beings? You’ll “see” purposeless, self-organizing atoms in every example of purported design in nature and dismiss alternative explanations as religious anti-science belief.

Some beliefs, like an Earth-centered solar system, were maintained until the overwhelming weight of evidence made it an unreasonable inference from the evidence. Why can’t the same be said about evolutionary creation by natural selection since first popularized by Darwin in 1859? Consider the subsequent discovery of DNA: It’s an organization of atoms as the physical hardware for a software code, conceptually identical to computer hardware and software, executing instructions to build and sustain life—from flowers to humans.

In all human experience, such hardware and software demand a builder and a coder—both requiring purposeful intelligence. Thus, DNA points unmistakenly toward true design: creation by God. Evolutionists, however, like viewing a living Rorschach test, gaze at the same molecule and perceive only “apparent” design, purposeless atoms aimlessly shuffled by blind forces toward no goal.

Here’s the crux: It’s not the evidence that divides us, but the lens through which we view it—what we believe true about the world. Materialist and atheist creationists filter reality through a chosen prism of divine absence in nature, their choice rendering an intellectual inference of creation by God categorically impossible. Their anti-free-thinking worldview forces them to see in nature’s ample and sufficient evidence only cold, aimless creation processes mirroring their worldview. They have no other option; they necessarily remain blind to alternatives.

Biblical creationists, knowing God as ultimate reality, readily discern His unmistakable handiwork. Evidence like DNA is only one of the many evidences in nature that we find make it easy to imagine human existence made in His image. Our free-thinking ability leaves all options open and results in a worldview able to rationally infer purposeful design. And like the heliocentric astronomers of old willing to let their explanations change with changing evidence, we stand side by side with atheists of old, unwilling to change their views, blind to any anti-evolutionary logical inferences new evidence makes rationally tenable.

The debate isn’t “What is the evidence?” but “Whose eyes behold it?” Shift your worldview to be free thinking about God, and nature’s book of cosmic Rorschach tests transforms like magic, each piece of evidence revealing an unmistakable inference of God’s handwork.

Have you ever considered why the very first of the Ten Commandments reads, You shall have no other gods before Me?

No other gods?

Are there really other gods around—real or imagined—that we might “have” and believe in such that they could stand before the creator God of the Bible?

God says yes. And it seems God made this commandment with people like Richard Dawkins on his mind. In his book, The God Delusion, Dawkins popularized the idea that “We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”

Dawkins, perhaps thinking himself crafty and cunning, might be surprised to find his professed belief starts in full accord with the First Commandment. Of course, he might be more surprised to find that it ends in full violation of the First Commandment. After all, the First Commandment could have been written in modern parlance as “You should be atheists to every god but Me.”

Dawkins exhibits great obedience to God in his staunch atheism in view of “most of the gods humanity has believed in.” He joins forces with the God of the Bible, the only god known as God, who also agrees that Zeus, Thor, Baal, Hermes, Beelzebub, Dagon, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and every other worshipped deity are false gods. The Apostle Paul distinguishes “most of the gods humanity has believed in” from the true God as “so-called gods.”

For Dawkins, however, the God of the Bible is also a so-called god. Dawkins, along with vast multitudes across the globe, dismiss the God of the Bible as an imaginary sky fairy, believed to be a true God by nature only by the gullible and ignorant. And he, along with most of the same vast multitudes, takes some delight in loudly belittling those of us who believe differently.

An abrasive and belittling persona does not make a person’s belief wrong. So we can ask, is Dawkins correct in going one god further? At least the first part of his belief statement conforms to orthodox Christian theology. But can a position that partly keeps and partly violates the First Commandment be rationally coherent?

Rational is the key word.

What might the evidence on earth suggest, if a rational mind were to question Dawkins’ belief? After all, the Bible itself anticipates the question in many places asking, “Who is like our God?” That is, who, or what, is in the same category of our God and worthy of our true belief? In answer, the Bible offers many unique, and readily ascertainable characteristics of a true God. Can we not ask the same question and explore the evidence ourselves of “other gods” before throwing the Baby out with the bath water?

To answer, we must first note that Richard Dawkins ventures into public with his dismissal of God as a so-called god not as a scientist, but as a philosopher. No scientific principle demands lumping the God of the Bible in with all the other gods in the bath water of man-made and imaginary deities.

In evaluating Dawkins’ philosophical musings that affirm half of the First Commandment, we can inquire if he has made what, in philosophical circles, is called a category error. The question involves investigating if the God of the Bible exists in the same category with other, so-called, Gods. It is doubtful that Dawkins dug deep in this direction.

Consider that two things can be true at the same time. First, humans can, and do, entertain thoughts of many gods, real and imagined as a category; and, second, the God of the Bible can be categorically different—a true God to be worshipped above all others. Again, the question is one of categories, a question that can be approached both philosophically and scientifically.

We can overlook Dawkins’ unsubstantiated foray into philosophy because we are all amateur philosophers at some level on the issue of (the true) God’s existence. And we all fall prey to the lure of logically questionable philosophical barbs leveled at our opponents. But a potential category error renders his philosophical position not only highly suspect, but ironically readily rejectable by scientific analysis.

We can start by asking the question, “What might nature and the world around us look like if the God of the Bible was, in truth, a true, living God? For starters we would be forced into the scientific truth that the very fact that we are asking a question about nature and the world around us demands an uncaused cause of everything. Categorically, does this thought lead to any other god of humanity?

The fact of creation itself puts the God of the Bible in a category of one. The Apostle Paul writes: “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.” Paul is not denying the existence of the other Gods of humanity; rather, he is noting that they are not gods by nature. Only a God who is by nature God can account for the very existence of nature and the world around us.

We can go further, but this is well-trodden ground not to be repeated here. But we can agree that is the particular conceit of evolutionists that our scientific observations of genetics, fossils, developmental biology, comparative anatomy, and the like, are solely evidences of evolutionary theory. In fact, the data gathered in every one of these disciplines leads to a more logical inference of God as creator of nature, than nature as the creator of gods.

If Dawkins would stick to science, and I pray that he eventually does, he would find the flaw in his philosophical musings. In fact, ironically, he would find as a scientific matter that two more things can be true at the same time: first, evolution by natural selection fails to explain the existence of all living things from an early life form, and second, modern science provides the logical inference of an intelligent creator, the only God of all gods answering to the Bible’s question “who is like our God?”

With respect to the second fact that I assert is true, Dawkins would find that, if he looked, God’s invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.

In the things that have been made! The very object of Dawkins’ scientific discipline stares him in the face every day! But unless his eyes are opened, he will, like all the vast multitudes dismissing God as a sky fairy, eventually find that he is without excuse. For although he knows at some level the true God—enough to expend great energy in denying Him—he does not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but instead has become futile in his thinking, and his foolish heart is darkened.

That’s Richard Dawkins. What about you?

As all serious Substackers know, it takes a lot of effort, time, and talent to produce quality content. Whether my content is considered quality is for others to judge; I know I could use a gifted editor. But the effort and time spent in writing books, posting Substacks, producing videos, and engaging in other social media activities is substantial.

And after almost five years of trying, outside of my faithful—but relatively few subscribers—I can’t detect any substantial interest in the topic of evolution and creation. It seems it is a dead topic for now!

Thus, I am taking a break from writing. My last post was on July 30, 2025. In that post you will discover what caused me to pause and reconsider how I spend my time and efforts.

I am not a marketer or social media guru and long ago I reached the limit of my abilities to produce and spread content. During this time I have prayed often and earnestly that God would “take the ball” so to speak and run with the message of Creation Reformation, including The Natural Selection Paradox, far beyond my abilities.

But this has not happened. So due to the lack of any widespread interest generated by my efforts, it is not clear to me that, despite my own passion, God is in my work. Serious Christians will understand my sentiments here: Is my passion God’s passion at this time and place?

I’m fine with bowing out of the debate. First, if this is not God’s will for my life I am fine with putting it on the altar of sacrifice. Second, I am not unaware that there are many other, more qualified and capable, voices in this debate. I will let God be God on whom He chooses to advance his kingdom on this topic.

So it may be that my July 30th post will be my last. If so, thank you, sincerely, to all my subscribers. Each notification of a new subscriber brings me satisfaction. And I hope you remain subscribers, because you never know how God might reveal himself to me, and ultimately to you!

Recently I experienced the delight of brushing “email elbows” with a world-renowned polymath and fellow skeptic of Darwinian evolutionary theory. Hoping to engage a kindred spirit in my quest to find traction for The Natural Selection Paradox, I ventured to ask if he might lend an “email ear” to my thoughts. What a wonderful email exchange ensued!

This agnostic philosopher of science—a skeptic of theistic and atheistic creation claims alike—took his time to respond thoughtfully to my request: Does The Natural Selection Paradox state a necessary truth of evolutionary theory?

Why that question? For years I have asserted and defended The Natural Selection Paradox as a logically valid—yet scientifically absurd—necessary truth of evolutionary theory. The current version of The Natural Selection Paradox (above) evolved over time as I honed my arguments with constant listening to—and debating with—evolutionists. And, if logically valid, The Natural Selection Paradox destroys any scientific basis for the only important truth claim of evolutionary theory: all current living things evolved from an early life form!

Because admittedly The Natural Selection Paradox seems too simple to generate the disruptive energy that I envisioned, and because it seems no evolutionist ever succumbs to its evident conclusion, and because few knowledgeable voices sympathetic to my view ever weigh in to affirm The Natural Selection Paradox, I continually question the logical and rational basis for its truth claim. All the time.

Thus, my inquiry to this trusted voice, known to be impartial in evaluating claims on all sides of the creation/evolution issue. And the result? His insightful reply confirmed that The Natural Selection Paradox, with a suggested tweak (in the form shown above), does indeed state a truth demanded by the theory of evolution.

I was pleased and encouraged with this affirmation and posed a follow up question. Because, I suggested to him, it seems a simple statement that destroys the truth claims of the theory of evolution might garner more attention than it does. Why then, I asked, do I feel like a voice crying in the wilderness with little but angry antagonism or stares of indifference from the few wanderers I encounter?

My email friend, a veteran of refuting Darwinian evolution for years at the highest levels of intellectual discourse, answered simply: You are right in remarking that no one pays attention to contrary arguments; and right again in remarking that these arguments have exhausted themselves.

These arguments have exhausted themselves. Those were his words, not mine, but they rang true. Discouragingly true.

Old, exhausted arguments in this debate were what led me on a search for something new, something unique to spark new discussions. I forged The Natural Selection Paradox as just that: a new, effectively simple and devastating argument that I expected to single-handedly change the evolution/creation debate!

But, alas, it seems exhaustion might rule in our time; I can barely muster a choir to preach to, much less any serious, widespread debate with evolutionists on the merits of evolutionary theory. And whereas before I suspected faulty logic in The Natural Selection Paradox as the cause, I must now suspect an even more formidable challenge: people just don’t care anymore.

It certainly appears that everyone has made their peace on the topic of evolution. There are few signs of curiosity in either the evolutionist camp or creationist camp, each supplied with camp directors protecting camp dogma from contrary outside views. Sadly, the only time creationists and evolutionists find fellowship in the same camp, it’s always the evolutionist camp!

Sadly? Sadly to whom? Sadly to the creator God who made men and women in his image by his Word. True creation by God according to the Genesis account anchors one end of the narrative arc of Biblical redemption, as testified by everyone in the rest of the Bible, from God himself, Jesus, the Prophets and the Apostles.

Without creation by God as described by God, the Gospel of redemption—a divine transfer of rightful possession—loses any coherent rationale. Redemption of who (or what), by whom (or what), from what, to what, etc.? Because evolution moots any foundational basis for the arc of redemption, the Christians camping out with the evolutionists very likely believe a skewed Gospel, if not a different Gospel.

A different Gospel? Yes. Because addressing the question of purposeful creation by God veers not only into matters of science, it crashes directly into theological concerns of the veracity of God himself and the basis for the Gospel message itself. There is, in fact, a camp in which no conflict between “science” and “religion” exists on the question of creation. No evolutionist finds this camp comfortable, however, because God himself dwells there in the glory of his Gospel truths. Unfortunately, many Christians find discomfort there as well.

In pursuit of drawing people into God’s camp for God’s honor on this issue, Creation Reformation seeks a reformation in the church on the topic of creation. In pursuit of this reformation, I relentlessly pursue two goals (1) to use logic and reasoning to kick the legs out from under evolutionary theory’s only important truth claim with The Natural Selection Paradox, and (2) to show the theological necessity of a true, historical Adam, created by God in his image as necessary for a coherent Gospel. We spend most of our time on (1) because it is a necessary truth for all. And for Christians, once (1) is achieved (2) follows easily. To the Glory of God!

My commitment to the cause of revealing God’s truth of creation will continue despite exhausted arguments. Why? Because my philosopher friend revealed another truth clear to all steeped in this debate: The biologists know deep down that Darwinian theories are just for show; but they have no idea where to go.

Someday exhaustion may yield to a new restlessness in God’s image bearers. Creation Reformation stands committed to being ready for anyone looking for “where to go” by lighting the path out of bondage to a dead theory and into the light of true life!

Does natural selection operate non-randomly in nature?

A quick AI check indicated that the question you just read has never before appeared in print. The question never gets asked publicly. It seems the question is settled without ever having been asked at all!

For those not up on evolutionary theory, the question of randomness in nature makes or breaks any scientific basis for a theory alleging the appearance of millions of ordered codes from disorder accumulating in nature. But evolutionary theory attempts just that by claiming that the genetic code for an early life form’s traits evolved over time into millions of diverse codes, each programming thousands of new traits.

The grand claim of evolutionary theory faces challenges Darwin did not imagine. New working codes descending from older codes, each modified randomly without direction or purpose? Were he alive today, Darwin surely would find such a basis for “descent with modification” challenging to his theory. But Darwin is long gone, and with modern evolutionists conceding the randomness of genetic mutations, they are left with only one possible ordering principle in nature: Darwin’s treasure of natural selection.

And what a treasure! Once the allure of a natural substitute for direction in nature entered the popular consciousness of people eager for a natural substitute for purpose in creation, Darwin’s theory circled the globe at the speed of lies. Fiercely guarded today by a moat of philosophical naturalism, the otherwise vulnerable castle of evolution is said to represent the grand unifying theory of all biology, a claim that nobody truly believes.

Well, not nobody. The earth teems with those mesmerized by the great semantic chimera of natural selection: a natural choice substitute that operates without volition or purpose. And, though doubts abound inside the castle walls, the mesmerizers in the towers continue spellbinding generations of innocents beyond the moat with their unchallenged declarations of “non-random” natural selection.

But . . . does natural selection operate non-randomly in nature?

In the context of evolutionary theory, the meaning of the otherwise ordinary term “non-random” gets wrapped around ideology-protecting axles. To avoid that, let’s consider what the opposite of random might look like in nature as a good indication of what non-random might look like. A quick online check yields these AI-generated possibilities for the opposite of random: “an action that is planned, deliberate, or systematic” or one that “involves a clear intention, method, or pattern.”

Do we find any of “planned,” “deliberate,” “systematic,” or “involving clear intention, method, or pattern” processes operating anywhere in nature? In fact, we do find some natural processes meeting some of these descriptors. For example, we see natural operations “involving pattern” and “systematic actions” in nature. But, tellingly, the very presence of observed “patterns” and “systematic actions” in nature reveals a compelling fact of natural selection that calls into question its supposed “non-randomness.”

Two reasons for this compelling fact show why natural selection cannot be rationally defended as operating non-randomly in nature. The first finds support in a science-based logical argument. The second can be supported from first principles of science as expressed in scientific laws.

First, consider the operation of natural selection as set forth by Darwin and still relied upon today. As nature produces new genetic codes on earth the only way it can, i.e., randomly inside replicated offspring, it simultaneously produces new organisms into a population with each being fit for its environment or not. And based on their inherited fitness traits and the environment, these new arrivals on earth either survive to reproduce in their populations, or not.

But note: fitness varies with environments, and environments themselves change randomly over time. That is, the “filter” of natural selection itself can change randomly over time, affecting what qualifies as fit at varied places and times. Therefore, Darwinian speciation in populations exists as the product of two random variables: X-fitness and Y-environment. And we know that the product of two random variables is again a random variable, making natural selection logically completely random and unpredictable.

Unpredictable. Ironically, as much as evolutionists tout “prediction value” as the hallmark of a valid theory, the analysis expressed above renders the logical reason for the self-evident common-sense truth: the theory of evolution by natural selection cannot predict anything of value. A scientific reason for this lack of predictability becomes clear as we look at the second reason why natural selection cannot be defended as operating non-randomly in nature.

Second, we observe evidence of non-random processes in nature only where scientific laws or principles, including principles of physics and chemistry, demand them. Crystal patterns don’t form randomly; the laws of thermodynamics demand a lowest energy state resulting in their predictable ordered patterns. Leaves don’t turn green randomly; the laws of physics and chemistry demand photosynthesis systematically operate resulting in predictable color expression. And apples don’t fall in random directions. Again, a scientific law demands gravity operate predictably such that an apple falling upward would literally break the law.

Combine the logical fact of natural selection operating at the whim of fitness traits and environmental conditions with the lack of any supporting scientific law or principle rendering natural selection non-random with predictable results, and one stubborn question arises: Why wouldn’t natural selection operate randomly like everything else in nature not constrained by, or contingent on, natural laws?

The only predictable aspect of evolutionary theory is the sure specter of unchallenged evolutionists interjecting “non-random” with every mention of natural selection. But in view of objective reality, their basis for coupling natural selection with non-randomness stands not on facts, but as a necessary wishful mantra to be repeated despite facts.

Evolutionists insist on the “natural selection is non-random” mantra because this notion must be true in their chosen creation narrative. But when a truth must be true despite rational grounds to reject it, it becomes dogma: a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds. And, of course, while dogma naturally attaches to religious beliefs, it should be non-existent among scientific theories.

For example, some religious traditions claim as dogma that the earth rests on the back of a turtle. When questioned what that turtle rests on, the answer is another turtle. One can see the regress, and often theistic arguments for a creator are cynically criticized as requiring “turtles all the way down.”

Something must be “all the way down” in any creation narrative. And what can be said for a theory that rightly admits to random processes producing randomized raw material for the natural selection process that itself is also found to operate randomly? It appears that despite wishful thinking and scientific hegemony, the theory of evolution can be uncynically described as randomness all the way down.

Think about it.

The Natural Selection Paradox forces the truth claims of evolutionary theory into the light of reason. Of course, “the light of reason” evades those who love the darkness. But truth is not changed by love of darkness.

Here it is, slightly revised from a previous version because it is always evolving:

Think about that. The Natural Selection Paradox must be true if evolutionary theory explains current living things. But this statement cannot be defended scientifically. So, a statement that must be true renders the theory of evolution scientifically untenable as an explanation for all species.

Thus, the paradox.

Note that we are not denying the “fact of evolution” or natural selection; evolution as change over time is real, and natural selection is observed to operate in nature. But the Paradox relies on a careful—and often ignored—distinction related to the roles of evolutionary mechanisms in nature.

Natural selection’s role in speciation, however described (filter, selector, eliminator, etc.) operates non-randomly to determine which genes move forward in evolutionary progress and which don’t. That is, for any given population of organisms representing a gene pool, natural selection operates to remove some of them, thus altering the available gene pool for future organisms.

But only random evolutionary changes, such as genetic mutations, operate to determine what genes are available in the gene pool to potentially move forward at each step of evolutionary progress.

Between which or what in nature, only one is of existential importance. And since Darwin’s day the which dominates evolutionary discussion, with the what caused by random genetic changes being relegated to the hopeful “occasional good mutations” discussion.

Without a “what” there is no “which” at all! And without a lot of good whats, the question of which whats becomes virtually irrelevant.

And yet, what a wicked “which” flies out of evolutionary theory via focusing on natural selection to the point where it is often used synonymously with the term evolution. The shadow of natural selection’s which hides the necessary faith-based hope in the unscientific reliance on random changes alone to explain the what of organisms to feed it.

The wicked which of natural selection has cast its shadow over the entire western civilization. Opposition to it seems futile. Several generations of students accept the scientifically untenable the same way we all do: belief without examination.

But I believe The Natural Selection Paradox brings the stark clarity that forces an examination of the only important claim of evolutionary theory: the origin of organisms as the raw material for the origin of species.

And when given a fair hearing, The Natural Selection Paradox always prevails. “Here's how some scientists think some eyes may have evolved: . . .” So starts the “Evolution of the Eye” post from PBS’s online Evolution Library. It’s a quick read, and the vacuous ponderings of “some scientists” should evoke sketicism, if not a chuckle, from any serious person. The PBS article’s “coulda-happened-this-way” explanation could probably get a chuckle out of Darwin himself, who’s already on record admitting skepticism about evolution’s ability to create an eye.

It seems that convincing people of evolution’s prowess by spooning out “coulda-happened” stories like PBS’s evolution of the eye conjecture passes for science today. Nothing in such stories hints at how evolutionary theory’s unguided processes could possibly account for the massively complex, intricate and interdependent programming necessary for the constant new coding for evolving eyes.

Darwin can be admired for his skeptism of his own theory to create the eye. And Darwin can be excused for hoping his theory might someday explain the eye. Because Darwin’s 19th-century mind could not conceive what 21st-century minds would see: an intricate tangle of software codes for the intricate tangle of hardware of the eye.

By relying on “coulda-happened-this-way” narratives for everything from giraffe’s necks to opposing thumbs, evolutionists hide 21st-century evidence behind Darwin’s 19th-century ideas. And in doing so they perpetuate one of the greatest Bunko hustles in human history. Catering to generations of people longing for alternatives to God as their creator, modern evolutionists jettisoned Darwin’s honest sketicism and gave those with eyes the uncanny ability to be uncurious, unskeptical, and blind to the obvious evidence around them (and in them).

Ironically, the “coulda-happened-this-way” scientific method behind the story of the eye produced an equally widespread side effect: the evolution of the blind eye!

To illustrate the blind eyes of those who adopt evolutionary theory as their chosen creation narrative, consider my recent conversation with an evolutionist. I summarize key points below; a complete transcript is (or will be) appended to the end of this post.

First, some context.

As my readers know, I assert and defend what I call The Natural Selection Paradox: Despite natural selection’s role in nature, every current life form was produced from a first life form SOLELY by cumulative random evolutionary change.

Creation Reformation developed The Natural Selection Paradox as a statement that must be a true IF evolutionary theory is the correct explanation for all current species. A rational person carefully considering the scientific tenability of The Natural Selection Paradox will come to the logical conclusion that it cannot be scientifically defended, and thus cannot possibly be true.

For years I have invited evolutionists to show how The Natural Selection Paradox is not a true statement (thus saving evolutionary theory) or is a true statement and can be scientifically defended. What I often get are evolutionists who agree it is a true statement and believe it is scientifically defensible. And this is exactly what “Bill” maintained in our recent email exchange.

The Blind Eye of Evolutionists Demonstrated

In Bill’s introductory email he stated:

Regarding your 'paradox' statement: "Every current species evolved from a first life form SOLELY by cumulative random evolutionary change." I'd say that natural selection was a crucial element in that evolution, i.e. that randomness was not SOLELY the driver of evolution. Although natural selection did not create any new genotypes, it selected the survivors in a very specific & directed way.

I responded, calling out Bill’s mischaracterization of The Paradox (in bold below). This is very common in dialogs with evolutionists. They tend to be a bit sloppy with the precise language needed for clarity:

We do not disagree that natural selection is crucial to explaining which species exist today. But The Natural Selection Paradox is still true. The Paradox makes a subtle, surgical, precise point about the evolutionary mechanism of change that produced the unbroken chain of organisms in the direct line of descent for all current species. The Paradox is not stating, as you suggest, "that randomness is SOLELY the driver of evolution." I could explain the distinction here, but the distinction is in the literal words of the Paradox, and further, that is what the video explained. Again, it's a subtle distinction, but it renders the Paradox true and devestates evolution by natural selection as the explanation for current living things. If after some pondering you do not see the subtle, powerful distinction, let me know. We can discuss further.

Bill replied:

I don't find your 'paradox' statement to be a paradox, or scientifically indefensible. I wish you would elaborate on why you believe it's a paradox, given all the mechanisms that we've agree on. Do you think of it as a paradox because you can't believe that complex organisms could have resulted from random events? It's just like the 'a watch requires a watchmaker' argument. Calling it a paradox is still an argument from incredulity- "Ah, that never coulda happened!"

Statements like Bill’s are frustrating. I explained in the first five minutes of The Silver Bullet video why I “find” my statement to be a paradox. And I explained fully why it is scientifically indefensible. And for Bill to jump right to accusations of an “argument from incredulity” is disappointing and does not bode well for a meeting of the minds.

We had some back-and-forth exchanges about a dice analogy that he loves and kept insisting I respond to, which I did. Then I got back to the business at hand. I realized I was going to have to spoon feed Bill about why The Natural Selection Paradox is a paradox.

My response:

Before I explain the paradox, let me make sure we are on the same page with what must be true if evolutionary theory explains all current species.

Since you see the statement I proposed about your dice example as true, do you also agree that The Natural Selection Paradox is a TRUE statement?

Here is The Natural Selection Paradox for reference: Despite natural selection's role in nature, every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change.

Bill helpfully responded:

Yes- I agree that your statement ("Despite natural selection's role in nature, every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change.") is true. I don't accept it as a paradox.

To ensure I am not wasting any more time than necessary, I probed Bill’s understanding once more by stating a version of The Natural Selection Paradox that any rational person would reject on its face as being scientifically untenable:

One more step.

The Natural Selection Paradox is equally true without the introductory phrase, as such: "Every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change."

Do you agree?

Bill responded, unable to bring back into play his example of the dice analogy. His “analagous” statement is not analogous, but I let it go because at this point it is a distraction:

Yes, I agree with that statement.

It is analogous to the statement: "This morning I took a 6-sided die and rolled 10 sixes, solely by random rolls of the die"

I replied, spelling out the paradox in great detail to Bill. Keep in mind that when I say The Paradox is “true” I mean it must necessarily be true if evolution by natural selection is the true explanation for current life forms. Here we go:

Thank you. We both agree that if the theory of evolution is true, then The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement.

Here is The Natural Selection Paradox: "Every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change."

Here is the definition of the term "paradox": “a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well-founded or true.”

I maintain that The Natural Selection Paradox is absurd as a scientific matter, and self-contradictory to the theory of evolution. But we both agree it is true.

If you want to show there is no paradox, provide the scientific law or scientific principle that makes the statement not absurd or self-contradictory. Specifically, state the scientific law or scientific principle that makes today's highly complex coded information a non-contingent result of random evolutionary mechanisms from a first living thing.

Remember, you cannot appeal to non-random evolutionary mechanisms in your explanation.

And now we get to witness the blind eyes of evolutionists. Bill is typical of evolutionists in his response and when we cross this point of the discussion I know there will be no discovery of truth by Bill.

Here’s Bill, desparately trying to make his dice analogy relevant to the conversation:

I'm not following you. Your statement ("Every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change") is neither absurd nor contradictory to the theory of evolution. You've said several times that this statement is true; but if you consider it true, why do you also consider it absurd or a paradox?

If we take my dice-experiment, I could make an analogous statement to yours by saying "This morning I took a 6-sided die and rolled 10 sixes, solely by random rolls of the die." We both agree that this statement is not absurd or paradoxical; and we both agree that it can be easily done the way I've outlined it.

I believe that your statement ("Every current species evolved from a first life form solely by cumulative random evolutionary change") is not paradoxical or even far-fetched, due to the hereditary mechanism of DNA and natural selection's mechanism of allowing the most-fit mutations to survive (i.e. recording each positive result, then proceeding with the process). Just calling the statement "absurd" doesn't make it so.

It’s hard to know how to respond to the blindness of replies like Bill’s. I know he truly believes his dice experiment is meaningful. But I already disposed of it and Bill does not even know it. You can judge for yourself by reading the entire transcript below.

Because this is what I do (and I often question if this is the best use of my time), I got out a small spoon to spoon feed Bill. This is a bit long, but I realize I need to be very granular in my explanation to Bill:

Let me clarify.

I have said several times that The Natural Selection Paradox is true if “the theory of evolution by natural selection is the true explanation for all current species."

I made that clear in the first few minutes of the "Silver Bullet" video, and I try to always make that qualifier clear in all my communications. I may have failed to do that somewhere in our exchange.

I also made very clear in the first few minutes of the video why I call The Natural Selection Paradox a paradox. I will recap briefly in three steps:

1. The Natural Selection Paradox is necessarily true IF the the theory of evolution is the true explanation for all current species.

   1. (We both agree with this statement).

2. But The Natural Selection Paradox is scientifically indefensible.

   1. You (apparently) disagree with this statement.

3. Thus, it is a paradox, because a scientifically indefensible statement must be true for the theory of evolution to be true.

   1. It's a paradox because The Natural Selection Paradox is (or SHOULD BE) seemingly absurd or self-contradictory. But when investigated may turn out to be true. (This is the definition of a "paradox").

It is not any more complicated than that. In my last email I asked you to address Point 2 above.

I will try again with my latest question to you. To render The Natural Selection Paradox NOT a paradox, it must be shown that Point 2 above is false and The Natural Selection Paradox IS scientifically defensible.

That's why I asked you to provide me with any scientific law or principle that renders Point 2 false, and The Natural Selection Paradox scientifically defensible/believable.

There is no other area of science in which random change alone explains increased organized complexity of the kind required to produce the genetic codes for every current species from a first life form.

For example, we know that it is not random change that explains why apples fall downward. Apples fall downward in accordance with a scientific law that describes their expected change in position.

Similarly, we know that it is not random change that explains the motion of the planets. The planets change their positions in accordance to the laws of motion and the law of gravity that describe their expected change in position.

Similarly, we know that it is not random change that explains the change of position of atoms to produce crystals. The crystals change their position in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics, seeking their lowest energy state, to describe their expected change in position.

I'm asking you to provide a similar scientific law or principle that can account for the "truth" that cumulative random change alone can make the massive ordering necessary for evolution to be possible, much less expected.

If this is not clear, and/or, you cannot provide such a scientific law or principle, we are likely done. I await your reply.

Bill responded with a long email that I reproduce in full below (except for the details of his much-beloved dice analogy, which will not go away; the reader can find this in the full appended transcript at the end of this post). I will leave it to the reader to see if Bill produced one scientific law or principle that can make The Natural Selection Paradox scientifically tenable. In my view, all he did is illustrate many examples of normal physics and chemistry in action in obedience to laws of nature, like the Laws of Thermodynamics, gravity, etc. But you be the judge:

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

Yes, I definitely think your 'paradox' statement is scientifically defensible. The statement only seems far-fetched, because it's hard for us to envision the number of random events and the time spans that were required for random events to lead to today's organisms.

As for your examples of scientific laws, planetary motions are definitely guided by gravity, which can't be called random; i.e. we've got formulas that predict it. But if you look on a more macro scale- the motions of asteroids and all the tiny rocks orbiting the sun and buzzing through our system from outside the Sun's sphere of influence (and all their interactions with each other) start to describe a random system- it becomes unpredictable. Our models might be accurate enough for us to send spacecraft from Earth to Mars, but they can't predict whether some tiny asteroid will impact us 40,000 years from now- the motions & interactions & collisions of the solar system are too complex for us to predict.

Similarly, on the micro-scale, chemical mechanics are random, driven by Brownian motion. For instance, a zeolite that adsorbs oxygen (because it contains crystalline 'pockets' that are ideal fits for the O2 molecule) only works due to random events. We flow air over the zeolite for a while, then find that the surface of the zeolite has a bunch of O2 molecules stuck in it- and we can model & predict how much O2 the zeolite will glom onto, but we can't predict when or how the Brownian motion of one O2 molecule will somehow bring it into just the right position to fit into one of the zeolite's 'pockets'. We only know that we can count on it happening due to the random Brownian motion of trillions of O2 molecules.

It's statistical mechanics- we can come up with a good formula that calculates the speed of sound in a gas (the speed of sound being the average speed of the particles in that gas), but we know we'll never figure out how fast each particle is traveling- we only know that the particles are traveling at many different speeds (randomly), and our experiments tell us what the average speed must be.

It's a bit of a mind-bender to realize that what we call "random" events are really orderly events that we just can't predict because of our limitations. The events are still following the physical laws of the universe, but they are so numerous and so busy that we really shouldn't bother ourselves trying to figure them out. We just dismiss them as "random" and try to make accurate models of the outcomes.

Similarly, random chemical events (mutations) have made trillions of new versions of living things, only some of whom survived as they competed with each other (natural selection), and the survivors carried on their specific advantages to future living things (heredity).

I'll invite you back to my dice analogy, because it clearly illustrates why I don't believe your 'paradox' is a paradox. Only the scales are different:

Knowing now that understanding is hopeless, I nevertheless respond, seeking an exit ramp, knowing that a scientific explanation for The Paradox is impossible but Bill will never agree:

I quickly scanned your email looking for a scientific principle or law that would logically make the idea of cumulative random mutations expected to produce massive order in current genetic codes. I did not see one. Please let me know if I missed it with a simple, one-line description of it (similar to how Newton's laws of motion are articulated or a mathematical representation, like for gravity.)

I get all the "statistical" business. But there is no statistical chance that cumulative random mutations and variations in a first genetic code would result in every current ordered, working, genetic building code in each species today. If you believe there is, we are done--you are believing a faith belief that defies science. That idea is against logic, science, and plain common sense. If The Natural Selection Paradox is true, evolution requires miracles.

Thank you for being a good sport. I appreciate your willingness to discuss The Natural Selection Paradox. But unless you propose a scientific reason to believe it can be true, or even a logical reason, I will likely not reply again.

Bill responded, once again peddling his dice analogy:

I think your rejection of evolution is an argument based on incredulity- evidenced by the blanket statement: "there is no statistical chance that... random mutations... would result in every... species today". That statement is groundless. I've read this same statement in many forms, but it always distills down to "Naaah... that never coulda happened."

My dice analogy, while describing something on a much smaller scale, shows why your 'paradox' statement is not a paradox at all.

But I agree- we are done with that discussion- we won't be changing each others' minds!

I'll leave you with one question- something I always like to ask when discussing evolution with creationists (at least those creationists who are claiming scientific reasons to reject evolution)- What evidence would you need to see to begin thinking that random mutations are the root cause of all species? It's a question worth some reflection (for those devoted to scientific reasoning).

I should have let it go here. But Bill once again went back to a baseless accusation of “argument based on incredulity.” And his reasoning for leveling that accusation is equally baseless. So, our saga continues.

I replied:

Mine is not a rejection based on incredulity, and the fact that that's where you go after all I've said is a bit insulting, and entirely disappointing. I have repeatedly asked for a scientific reason to believe that The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement (if evolutionary theory is true). Asking for a scientific reason to believe and not being shown one is not rejecting based on incredulity any more than rejecting a sky fairy is based on incredulity. It is not simply unbelievable; it's the reason it's unbelievable.

As for your other arguments, they strike me as wishful thinking. It is the "enough time" with enough "random events" anything can happen idea. That is not a scientific idea. And I reject it on the grounds of scientific laws: The Laws of Thermodynamics, especially the Second Law. First, I'm not looking for evidence that random mutations are the "root cause" of all species. This characterization of my position is also insulting and disappointing and I suspect underlies your inability to see the devastating truth of The Natural Selection Paradox. But as for what evidence would I need to see to begin thinking that cumulative random evolutionary changes ALONE are the SOLE cause of all species, that's easy. Show me a scientific reason why The Natural Selection Paradox can be true. (Again, the fact that that's the question you would leave me with is a bit insulting and entirely disappointing. What do you think I've been asking you for?)

It's ironic you end with: "It's a question worth some reflection (for those devoted to scientific reasoning)." What do you think I've been doing with you? I'm not only "reflecting," I'm actively questioning you for scienfitic reasons to believe. You have shown no scientific reasoning in your attempted explanation for how The Natural Selection Paradox can be true. And yet you believe I'm the one who needs to "reflect?"

It's all very interesting, and predictable. I've been doing this a long time and I have yet for an evolutionist to agree The Natural Selection Paradox is true and based on the resulting obvious logical and scientific grounds reject evolutionary theory as true. What this means is that for evolutionists the question is not one of science, but ideology. That is fine, but it needs to be admitted.

You won't admit you are beholden to an ideology (because no one believes they are). But I will use our exchange (verbatim) to make a video to show how evolutionists are beholden to their chosen creation narrative. I will not use your name, and I'll let you know when it is out. In view of that, I will let you have the last word if you like. Feel free to end our dialogue with any last thoughts you would like those who video to see.

Bill made a reply that you can read in the apended transcript below. His reply drew what I know is a response falling on blind eyes, but I made it not for Bill, but for others who will read this exchange:

I'm glad to continue the dialog as well. But you are not understanding my position. One example: You said, "I'll assume that you judge it as a paradox because it seems statistically impossible to you."

I'm making a very different argument, which I will reluctantly make one more time. I judge The Natural Selection Paradox a paradox because it must be true if evolution is true, but since it is scientifically indefensible it ironically renders the theory of evolution by natural selection unscientific.

That's a lot of words, but that's it. And the reason The Natural Selection Paradox is scientifically indefensible is not because it "seems impossible to me." Lot's of things "seem impossible" but are nevertheless supported by scientific laws. Force through a distance, like gravity, seems impossible. But the law of gravity explains why it is true.

The Natural Selection Paradox does not "seem" impossible to me. It IS impossible by current scientific laws (Laws of Thermodynamics) and there is no scientific law or principle or action of physics or chemistry that can make the Paradox scientifically tenable.

In any other context, the same statement would be laughed at by scientists; it is simply an absurd idea. That is not incredulity. That is scientific rejection of the absurd.

Do you understand? It does not matter, really. But that's the best I can do.

Again, I promised you the last word, so feel free. But you are not paying close attention to my position, so I'm about to throw in the towel.

We had several more fruitless exchanges. But I told Bill I would give him the last word, and here it is, from Bill:

Well, I guess I'm done also. You haven't sufficiently explained why you believe your 'paradox' statement is scientifically indefensible; you've hinted that it's so obvious that it sufficiently supports itself ("the same statement would be laughed at by scientists; it is simply an absurd idea"; "It is not simply unbelievable; it's the reason it's unbelievable"). You've claimed that it violates the principles of thermodynamics "It IS impossible by current scientific laws (Laws of Thermodynamics)."

Yet your 'paradox' statement is completely viable & scientifically defensible; it it statistically viable (illustrated by my dice analogy), and it doesn't violate the 2nd law of thermo (because Earth & its biome are not a closed system). It is also not contradictory to the theory of evolution, although you maintain this is obvious.

You've claimed that I'm somehow trapped in the paradigm of the theory of evolution ("You won't admit you are beholden to an ideology"), yet I've offered several hypothetical examples of specific evidences that could change my mind. Meanwhile, you have not given me any such examples of evidences that could change your mind. I've got to conclude that you are not thinking scientifically, because you can't imagine any evidence that (if it showed up one day) would change your mind. If there's no hypothetical thing that you can think of that could change your mind, you are the one trapped in an ideology.

But, the discussion has been enjoyable for me. After watching your 'Silver Bullet' video, I was impressed by how much you understood the mechanisms of evolution (not very common amongst creationists). I disagreed with your assertion that your 'paradox' statement must be false, wanted to fully discuss it with you, and I appreciate the civil dialogue we've had. I'm sure you'll successfully spread your ideology in the USA, where we have a large anti-science movement in full swing.

I’m sure Bill is equally frustrated with my inability to see his point. We may both be blind and wrong, but we cannot both be right!

I'm writing because I just watched your 'Silver Bullet' video, enjoyed it, and you specifically said you'd like to hear from me (I'm a firm adherent to the theory of evolution by natural selection). Hopefully you won't end up regretting that invitation! You seem reasonable and you have a good grasp of the mechanics of evolution: random mutations leading to new phenotypes, natural selection of some of those phenotypes, resulting in gradual cumulative change.

One minor point of semantics: I tend to think of natural selection as the selection of more-fit individuals for survival & reproduction, while the less-fit individuals are not really selected- death & extinction just follow naturally for them. In the domestication of species, we think of a breeder as 'selecting' only the most advantageous individuals (i.e. the fastest race horses) to carry on the lineage.

Another minor point: the earlier common ancestor of all currently living species was not necessarily the first living thing (but I bet it was pretty close).

Regarding your 'paradox' statement: "Every current species evolved from a first life form SOLELY by cumulative random evolutionary change." Although natural selection did not create any new genotypes, it selected the survivors in a very specific & directed way.

The great majority of mutations are either neutral (no real effect) or negative (they make an organism less fit to survive & reproduce). For instance when an animal is conceived with some serious negative mutation, it will very likely die before being born or hatched. Natural selection does not modify genotypes but it filters almost all of them out- thus "guiding" the tree of life to proceed with more & more 'fit' organisms. Without natural selection (i.e. without death & extinction), there'd by trillions of unfit species running around with us today.

I took your 'tree of life' graphic and tried to represent the many, many neutral or negative mutations in just one little junction of that tree. I think that's what you're missing- that the tree of life (i.e. the unbroken genetic line of ancestors to today's organisms) was the result of many, many genetic "errors" in its history. While it's unscientific to think that the unbroken ancestral line of organisms proceeded without any errors, it's very scientific to think that the unbroken ancestral line was what was left after trillions and trillions of negative mutations went extinct.

An analogy to this might be: If I have a 6-sided die, and I roll it 10 times, there's only a 1-in-60,500,000 chance that every single roll in the series will be a six- i.e. it ain't gonna happen. But if I set up a system of selection & survivorship- let's say I mark out 10 boxes on a sheet of paper, and every time I roll a six, I place a check in one box. Now it's not so unlikely that I'll fill every box with a check- I'll probably have it before I roll the die 60 times. Genetic heredity and natural selection work the same way- they allow every positive step to be captured, recorded & preserved.

One minor point of semantics: I tend to think of natural selection as the selection of more-fit individuals for survival & reproduction, while the less-fit individuals are not really selected- death & extinction just follow naturally for them. In the domestication of species, we think of a breeder as 'selecting' only the most advantageous individuals (i.e. the fastest race horses) to carry on the lineage.

I don't disagree with your view. I find the term "selected" to be problematic however it is used because in English the term "selected" in its every day meaning requires a choice, which is something only a sentient being can do. But, again, I see your point and won't argue it.

Another minor point: the earlier common ancestor of all currently living species was not necessarily the first living thing (but I bet it was pretty close).

I understand your point here. Whatever the first living thing was, with its replication mechanisms, would have been much different than what we see today. But, as a matter of logic, unless there were two or more independent abiogenesis events, the earliest common ancestor must have been the first living thing. At least, it seems so to me.

I could explain the distinction here, but the distinction is in the literal words of the Paradox, and further, that is what the video explained. There is no other area of science in which random change alone explains increased organized complexity of the kind required to produce the genetic codes for every current species from a first life form.

Similarly, we know that it is not random change that explains the motion of the planets. The planets change their positions in accordance to the laws of motion and the law of gravity that describe their expected change in position.

SImilarly, we know that it is not random change that explains the change of position of atoms to produce crystals. The crystals change their position in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics, seeking their lowest energy state, to describe their expected change in position.

I'm asking you to provide a similar scientific law or principle that can account for the "truth" that cumulative random change alone can make the massive ordering necessary for evolution to be possible, much less expected.

Yes, I definitely think your 'paradox' statement is scientifically defensible. The statement only seems far-fetched, because it's hard for us to envision the number of random events and the time spans that were required for random events to lead to today's organisms.

As for your examples of scientific laws, planetary motions are definitely guided by gravity, which can't be called random; i.e. we've got formulas that predict it. But if you look on a more macro scale- the motions of asteroids and all the tiny rocks orbiting the sun and buzzing through our system from outside the Sun's sphere of influence (and all their interactions with each other) start to describe a random system- it becomes unpredictable. Our models might be accurate enough for us to send spacecraft from Earth to Mars, but they can't predict whether some tiny asteroid will impact us 40,000 years from now- the motions & interactions & collisions of the solar system are too complex for us to predict.

Similarly, on the micro-scale, chemical mechanics are random, driven by Brownian motion. For instance, a zeolite that adsorbs oxygen (because it contains crystalline 'pockets' that are ideal fits for the O2 molecule) only works due to random events. We flow air over the zeolite for a while, then find that the surface of the zeolite has a bunch of O2 molecules stuck in it- and we can model & predict how much O2 the zeolite will glom onto, but we can't predict when or how the Brownian motion of one O2 molecule will somehow bring it into just the right position to fit into one of the zeolite's 'pockets'. We only know that we can count on it happening due to the random Brownian motion of trillions of O2 molecules.

It's statistical mechanics- we can come up with a good formula that calculates the speed of sound in a gas (the speed of sound being the average speed of the particles in that gas), but we know we'll never figure out how fast each particle is traveling- we only know that the particles are traveling at many different speeds (randomly), and our experiments tell us what the average speed must be.

It's a bit of a mind-bender to realize that what we call "random" events are really orderly events that we just can't predict because of our limitations. The events are still following the physical laws of the universe, but they are so numerous and so busy that we really shouldn't bother ourselves trying to figure them out. We just dismiss them as "random" and try to make accurate models of the outcomes.

Similarly, random chemical events (mutations) have made trillions of new versions of living things, only some of whom survived as they competed with each other (natural selection), and the survivors carried on their specific advantages to future living things (heredity).

I'll invite you back to my dice analogy, because it clearly illustrates why I don't believe your 'paradox' is a paradox. Only the scales are different:

You've asked for scientific reasoning to think your 'paradox' statement is true- I'd say there are many different examples of how random, chaotic events lead to orderly systems. These would include: how the chaotic brownian motions of atoms (unpredictable) result in them finding their lowest energy state in an orderly crystal (predictable); how the chaotic collection of primordial dust & gas (unpredictable) resulted in the planets of our current solar system (predictable); how a vibratory feeder can take thousands of chaotic socket-head-cap-screws (unpredictable) and by its jiggling motion (and the right chute) feed out a nice line of screws, all oriented the same way (predictable).

But the best & simplest scientific reasoning I can come up with to claim your 'paradox' is true is my dice analogy. I'll repeat it here for completeness, along with a chart showing the parallels (this got unrecognizably reformatted by my email app last time):

I sit at my kitchen table and repetitively roll a single 6-sided die (it's a slow morning). After a while, I claim I've rolled a six 10 times. I've recorded my results each time I've rolled a 'six'- and sure enough, I've got 10 boxes drawn out on a piece of paper, with a check mark in each box.

Your judgement of your 'paradox' statement (you think it's false) does seem to be one of basic incredulity- "It's the reason that it's unbelievable." I'll assume that you judge it as a paradox because it seems statistically impossible to you. I don't believe that anybody has enough data or knowledge to figure out the statistical probability of life springing up on the young Earth and then proliferating into all the species we've seen- but I accept that it must have happened that way based on the mechanisms that we've scientifically observed (mutation; DNA; natural selection; genetic drift, order-falling-out-of-chaos; time scale; geologic scale). We haven't scientifically observed an intelligent designer pulling the strings or any other miraculous goings-on, and the things we HAVE observed could have led to our known species, so I'll accept it as viable.

But please take a bit to try answering my question with some specific things: What evidence would you need to see to begin thinking that random mutations are the root cause of all species? I know you're not looking for that evidence, but if you're thinking scientifically, you're staying open to any evidence that comes your way. I don't accept your answer of "Show me a scientific reason why The Natural Selection Paradox can be true"- because it's vague and a bit circular, like saying "I'll believe any evidence that's credible." This is an 'answer' I've heard before from creationists- it's a cop-out.

I'll try answering a similar question (What evidence would I need to see to begin thinking that random mutations are NOT the root cause of all species?) with specific examples:

• Fossil evidence that was chronologically out-of-synch (e.g. a homo Sapiens fossil dated to 300M years ago)

I'm making a very different argument, which I will reluctantly make one more time. I judge The Natural Selection Paradox a paradox because it must be true if evolution is true, but since it is scientifically indefensible it ironically renders the theory of evolution by natural selection unscientific.

That's a lot of words, but that's it. And the reason The Natural Selection Paradox is scientifically indefensible is not because it "seems impossible to me." Lot's of things "seem impossible" but are nevertheless supported by scientific laws. Force through a distance, like gravity, seems impossible. But the law of gravity explains why it is true.

The Natural Selection Paradox does not "seem" impossible to me. It IS impossible by current scientific laws (Laws of Thermodynamics) and there is no scientific law or principle or action of physics or chemistry that can make the Paradox scientifically tenable.

In any other context, the same statement would be laughed at by scientists; it is simply an absurd idea. That is not incredulity. That is scientific rejection of the absurd.

The idea that this issue is about mere "order" is one of the reasons evolutionists remain evolutionists.

• Natural processes can create orderly structures from chaotic, random particles (i.e. crystal growth)
  

• Organisms naturally generate mutations within their DNA (most importantly, when they reproduce)

• These mutations result in biological diversity
  

• The environment & competition naturally select some of these variations to survive & reproduce better than others

• Species thus evolve to become better 'fit' to survive & reproduce within their environments

• Many genes & genetic markers are shared by different species
  

My conclusion from this (along with all of mainstream biology) is: Random genetic mutations have ended up producing organisms that are increasingly more complex, as natural selection has brought them along to become more 'fit' within their environments. Sometimes enough random mutations have strung together to form new species, and genetic analysis shows common descent among species.

As I've explained above, the 2nd law of Thermo is not in conflict with the complexity of organisms, although you've stated you believe it to be. I doubt we'll ever come to agreement on that issue; I won't try further to persuade you.

But let's go back to my question for you- "What evidence would you need to see to begin thinking that random mutations are the root cause of all species?" This is a pretty critical part of this discussion for me; that's why I gave you four example answers to the opposite form of the question from my side (i.e. evidences that would make me begin to think that random mutations were NOT the root cause of all species). If we're thinking scientifically, we are keeping our minds open to new data & discoveries- so what would you need to see? It's a cop-out to answer that question with "any data that was scientifically defensible," because that is not a specific answer. Creationists have seen loads of data in support of evolution, and they've rejected every one. But- if we're thinking scientifically, let's name some specific examples that would change your mind. These by nature are going to be hypothetical (the examples I gave all were).

I'd invite you to come up with some examples for me, in answer to my question. I've only had two creationists give me answers to this question- one lady stated that her beliefs in creationism would get challenged if scientists ever produced life in the lab from scratch. Another guy claimed that he'd start believing evolution was viable if he witnessed "a fish giving birth to a bird." Every other creationist has non-answered it along the same lines you did: "any evidence that was viable."

By the way, I'm enjoying our discussion, and I think it's important we continue to express our views with a civil dialogue. We can certainly maintain mutual respect while we disagree on things!

ChatGPT showed itself a good evolutionist when queried about The Natural Selection Paradox.

I use the term “good” in two senses. First, ChatGPT displayed remarkable semantic agility in its ability to mimic human evolutionists. Consider this: despite my questions and the obvious answers showing the impotence of natural selection in explaining all current species, ChatGPT doggedly insisted at every opportunity to inject an unnecessary explanation of “what natural selection does” in its response. And, although at every attempt I was able to show ChatGPT the inapplicability of natural selection, I continued to be subjected to repetitive mini lectures on the role of natural selection. Just like evolutionists in real life!

Second, ChatGPT responded politely, even a bit chipper, in its interaction with my persistent questioning. Unlike evolutionists in real life. Fascinating!

Consider The Natural Selection Paradox, shown above. We at Creation Reformation developed this statement and assert that it, though scientifically indefensible, must be true if evolution explains the necessary evolutionary change leading to all current species. True if evolution is true, but destroys evolution as the true explanation for life today? Thus, the paradox.

For years I have fielded attempted rebuttals of The Natural Selection Paradox. And over time the statement has evolved based on various valid critiques of evolutionists. Getting ChatGPT to see the truth and agree with us proved as frustrating as dealing with a human evolutionist. Remarkably, ChatGPT did what most evolutionists do when engaged: tend to agree that The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement, but quickly abjure by denying it is really true by insisting that somehow natural selection necessarily operates to explain necessary evolutionary change to make it true. Like all evolutionists, ChatGPT believes natural selection is the magic in the machine, not because it is, but because it must be.

Thus, we queried ChatGPT. You can find the full transcript of the exchange appended below including our many simple questions. Any intrepid soul who follows all of our questions and combs through the weeds of ChatGPT answers will find we systematically, frustratingly, but successfully convinced ChatGPT to agree The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement. Here we relate the end of the very long transcript showing ChatGPT’s final surrender to truth.

In this snippet of the transcript, ChatGPT is responding to this query from me: Back to my question. If you read the full transcript below, you will see that ChatGPT acted almost precisely like a human evolutionist prior to simply stating the truth above. ChatGPT ducked and dodged, and only reluctantly concluded that The Natural Selection Paradox is “absolutely correct.” I found it amusing that, like a human evolutionist might do, ChatGPT could not resist adding “as written” to its admission.

The “as written” is just the thing a human evolutionist would tell us. Similarly, prior to this admission, ChatGPT said our statement was true “at its core.” Only after being questioned about why the qualifier did ChatGPT agree that the “at its core” did not change the truth of the statement. Apparently ChatGPT exhibited the very human tendency to dilute the impact of its admission noting that other (non-core?) evolutionary processes contribute “to evolution.”

The implication ChatGPT cannot help making is that the statement is only true because it is written in some tricky way. Of course, if the statement is true it is true “as written;” that’s the only way it exists! And we will take “at its core;” because the core claim devastates the theory of evolution by natural selection.

In summary, in a remarkably human-like fashion ChatGPT became convinced in a painstaking Q&A that mirrors exchanges we engage in regularly with human evolutionists. And just like in interactions with human evolutionists, ChatGPT forced me to engage in a frustratingly circuitous series of logical questioning and re-questioning to win its confirmation of The Natural Selection Paradox.

Unlike most human evolutionists, ChatGPT found it could finally recognize that The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement. Why? Because it is a machine and holds no sacred ideology. Oh, and also The Natural Selection Paradox is a true statement.

Thus, ChatGPT interacted logically and eventually resigned itself to truth. And though the internet filled its machine brain chock-full of evolutionary weeds that we had to plow up, we were successful precisely because logic and truth ignore sacred ideologies.

Now, if only human evolutionists could be so logical. But with an ideology to protect? It will never happen. Believe me, we often wear our plow shares to nubs trying.

A question mark turned exclamation mark—that's the state of origins science today. Science educators tell rather than ask on the one topic where questions matter most. Stiff answers in search of safe questions and stiffer exclamations in response to unsafe—such is the substance of science education on the topic of origins. Working backwards from answer to question, today's origins science has achieved the glorious status of a T-shirt truism previously reserved for love and Jesus: Evolution is the answer, what's the question?

Truisms abound in a land where truth is beholden to an ism. "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution," launched from the pen of an otherwise obscure luminary who claimed to be "a creationist and an evolutionist," has become the science stopping Truism of truisms on the subject. No other lights are necessary when scientific inquiry becomes so myopic that the penlight of evolution appears bright as the sun. The current myopia survives in the face of modern evidence only by tacking a huge "ism" onto a little truth—the grand presumption of matter and all-that-matters: all things are caused solely by the mindless laws of physics. And when this, the lifeless machine of naturalism, forces the life science of Darwinism to be the answer instead of a question, science has swallowed a lie.

Naturalism, the unscientific crutch for unguided, purposeless Darwinism, turns scientific inquiry on its head. Suddenly a philosophy that presumes only unintelligent causation becomes gatekeeper to the intelligible world of scientific knowledge. Guideless, godless, guile usurps legitimate authority of evidence-based reason as the backdrop against which every hypothesis is judged as being "science". And any claims that are apparently "religious"—or at least those that are congenial to a theological worldview—are marginalized and can never be defeaters of "science". Science defined by non-science defining competing science as non-science—naturalism is quite the wonderworker.

But what if naturalism is a lie? What if atheists are wrong? What if all material evidence were permitted to be considered freely, without naturalistic blinders? On the topic of origins, might Darwin's mountain of truth-by-decree then look more like a molehill of lies-by-degree? What fear this must strike deep in the heart of every atheist and scientist of the National Academy of Sciences. With respect to naturalism forcing a narrow range of "scientifically acceptable alternatives," John Searle was correct in observing, "Acceptance of the current views is motivated not so much by an independent conviction of their truth as by a terror of what are apparently the only alternatives." When it comes to the question, Where did we come from? philosophical naturalists would rather glory in a lie than face the terror of the truth.

Letting the bully-boy of naturalism protect the pretty-boy of Darwinism on the playground of ideas is an effective strategy for perpetuating a lie. Strutting about as untouchable among the impressionable pretty-boys of science, 19th century Darwinism has yet to go alone behind the gym for a few rounds with 21st century evidence. Knowing that without the constant protection of a philosophical thug their theory could not survive as science in the sunlight of modern evidence, pasty-skinned Darwinists ballyrag about in the shadow of naturalism, pretending to play science while ducking and dodging in diametrical opposition to the light of truth.

Contemporary popes-playing-science protect old theories from new data the same way their predecessors did, by banning all challenging theories not conforming to their philosophy-constrained truth. When contrary interpretations of the evidence are banned from consideration, is it surprising that the protected interpretation is accepted by all scientists? Is it surprising that a "mountain" of evidence supports Darwinism when all the evidence is permitted to be pushed into only one pre-determined, protected pile? Even landfills can become mountains if enough trash is pushed in and piled up in one place.

The fate of competing evidence is nowhere more evident than in the "publish and/or perish" dichotomy of academic truth suppression: unwarranted praise of Darwin—publish or perish, and unwarranted stifling of every other evidence-based theory—publish and perish. Publication for the former seems inevitable based on the unending stream of scientific papers that have little to do with Darwinism yet nevertheless bow, genuflect, and gratuitously pay homage to the Great Man. The latter is evidenced by the virtually complete ban on publishing any non-materialistic, evidence-based scientific theory; and what publications do slip through are accompanied by tenure-denying, petition-generating, hatred and vitriol. Like a modern-day Roman emperor enjoying his forced adoration in the coliseum of academia, Darwin-on-the-dais demands a salute from all who come to participate, knowing that survival of the skittish depends entirely upon his opposable thumb.

Read for yourself—in articles of popular and unpopular science alike you will find the "secret handshake" of "my idea supports Darwinism" in the oddest of places. Popular science articles purport to show the use of "evolutionary principles" for design, while actually showing how intelligence is necessary to achieve any meaningful result. In peer-reviewed journals the salute to the emperor often appears as an afterthought, perhaps added in at the request of a fearful editor sensing a trace of murmuring or a look of defiance before the emperor's thumb. It seems very difficult today, however, to write in scientific journals and make the salute to mindless Darwinism (the only kind there is) hardy and sincere. Usually, the duck-and-dodge is handled with a hearty—if not hardy—"this study supports 'evolution'" rather than "Darwinism", because, as everyone knows, all evidence proves the former, while the latter is merely the currently accepted theory.

Consider the plight of credentialed scientists who attempt to publish scientific findings slightly critical of "evolution". Jonathan Wells, author of Icons of Evolution, and as credentialed as most scientist get in the field of life sciences, first encountered what he refers to as a "Catch-23" in 1998 while a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Wells realized that pictures in his biology textbook were based on drawings that had been faked by 19th century German Darwinist Ernst Haeckel (knowingly so by all, but these pictures continue in use today!). Wells submitted an article about such a significant error in popular biology textbooks to the peer-reviewed American Biology Teacher--the official journal of an organization whose declared mission is to empower educators "to provide the best possible biology and life science education for all students." His article did not criticize Darwinian evolution; in fact, it explicitly pointed out that "it would be illogical to conclude that Haeckel's distortions invalidate Darwin's theory," because Darwin did not base his inferences on embryological evidence alone. His article did, however, state, "It might be better to look elsewhere for evidence of evolution."

Wells’ article was given to two anonymous reviewers; one liked it, and the other did not. The only change recommended by the first was that he include more references. The second recommended, among other things, that Wells "emphasize what is useful about the study of embryology in evolution" and that he "detail some positive lessons that could be demonstrated through comparative embryology." The journal editor agreed, telling Wells, "Your paper is acceptable for publication, provided you revise the paper according to the comments provided by the reviewers." Salute. Secret handshake. Wink, wink.

Wells added some quotes from other biologists who thought that the study of embryology would add to Darwin's theory; with this mandatory affirmation of faith in evolution, his article was published in May 1999. Wells has since learned well the rule: "A theory such as intelligent design, that fundamentally challenges Darwinian evolution, is not scientific so it can't be published in peer-reviewed science journals; and we know it's not scientific because it hasn't been published in peer-reviewed science journals. Catch-23!"

That was then, this is now. While evidence continues to flee from Darwinism and point to intelligent design like iron filings to a truth magnet, those of the opposite pole suppress truth by more cruel means. Consider the fate of Iowa State University's Guillermo Gonzalez, who has no problem generating peer-reviewed publications--nearly 70 of them--as well as being a co-author of a major college-level astronomy textbook. But because Gonzalez sees his truth in light of a different ism, Iowa State this month denied tenure to the ID-friendly astronomer. You see, in addition to performing undeniably stellar (so to speak) teaching and research, the good professor also happened to co-author a book presenting empirical evidence for the hypothesis that the universe is the product of intelligent design. A petition signed against him by 120 of his own faculty presages history-repeating irony: astronomer scientists with the initials G.G. seem destined for paradigm-changing greatness in the face of religiously inspired intolerance.

Sadly, intolerant invective toward disfavored viewpoints has become a virtue in origins science. Materialism—the reigning ism of Western culture—like its cousin naturalism, bears down hard on the evidence, seeking to smother it into suffocating submission. In such circumstances truisms must suffice for truth, but reliance on truisms can be risky business where darkness holds more than academic pitfalls and small faults open great chasms. As St. Thomas Aquinas remarked in his introduction to De Ente et Essentia, "a little error in the beginning leads to a great one in the end." By all evidential accounts materialism is a lie in the beginning, but what a wonderful lie it is. Matter alone means self on the throne. And self on the throne means truth all one's own. And truth all one's own means true truth unknown. A great error indeed.

Great errors are rarely corrected by working sideways to true truth. Little lies like naturalism set the trajectory so that great distortions like Darwinism only get greater as academic inertia enforces the lie so that those forced to believe diverge steadily away from the evidence. Only by humbly starting at the beginning to eliminate the little error can there be any hope of discovering the true truth about our origins. And like a lighthouse among theory-laden ships at sea, only true truth remains unchangeable and unchanging. Those who love truth know this. And those who don't will find out.

On its face, the Second Law of Thermodynamics (Second Law) stands diametrically opposed to any theory, including biological evolution, that requires matter to go naturally and unattended from a simple distributed form to a more complex, organized or structured form.

In terms of energy, natural systems always seek a lowest energy state. Thus, crystals in nature organize naturally according to physics and are simply atoms seeking a lowest energy state. Likewise, some plants are coded with directions to use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar, i.e., coded to perform photosynthesis. (See Note 1 below.)

In the absence of physical laws (crystals) or coded instructions (photosynthesis), the Second Law holds that all natural systems devolve to increasing disorder over time.

Are there any physical laws or coded instructions to drive the process of evolution?

The Second Law can be easily understood by considering what happens when a drop of red dye is dropped into a container of clear water. Before dropping, the concentrated dye molecules are moving in the drop and the water molecules are moving about the container. When the dye is added to the water the dye particles and water molecules continue to move, colliding with one another. In a natural process known as diffusion the dye particles gradually spread out in all directions resulting in an even distribution. Over time, the drop of dye no longer exists; it went from an organized, concentrated form to a simple, distributed form to make, e.g., an evenly pink liquid.

The simple, observable diffusion of a drop of dye in water illustrates the Second Law in operation. The Second Law operates in any closed system (our container of water with the dye dropped in) and holds: in the absence of any organizing principle (such as, atomic forces (crystals) or coded instructions (photosynthesis)) natural systems will always go from a relatively greater complex/ordered/concentrated form (our red drop of dye) to a more even/disordered/diluted form (our evenly pink liquid).

Importantly, note that there is no reverse natural process that will produce a drop of red dye from distributed red dye molecules in the water. In fact, in science there is no opposite term for “diffusion.” The best we have in English is words like “collection,” “concentration,” or “gathering.” It’s easy to see that in the simple dye-water-container “system” nature provides no force or law to “collect” the red dye molecules back into a drop form. To collect, concentrate, or gather requires directed energy from something else in the system.

How does this fact apply to evolutionary theory?

In brief, the theory of evolution describes a process that, in effect, states that the red dye molecules can, in fact, be “collected,” or “concentrated,” or “gathered,” back into a drop form. That is, the theory of evolution describes a natural process in which matter is said to go from the simple to the complex, from less structured to more structured, from less organized to more organized, from less meaningful order to more meaningful order.

Do evolutionary processes violate the Second Law?

The stock reply from virtually all evolutionists to this question is that the Second Law applies only to closed systems. In the case of evolution, evolutionists say, the Second Law’s tendency to prevent the incredible ordering necessary for evolution is circumvented by including the sun in our local earth system. The sun provides enormous amounts of energy, and this energy drives the massive Second Law-defying progress of evolution.

Usually, the Second Law is dismissed flippantly and casually as if its inapplicability to evolution is hardly worth elaborating. Understanding the Second Law (and the evolutionist response) is necessary for an understanding of how the Second Law remains a immovable wall of scientific truth against natural, unguided evolution. For this reason, the reader is urged to consider carefully the following discussion, where every effort has been made to avoid overly tedious details.

“Available energy” is required for any process to do “work”—a term having a defined meaning in physics of “force multiplied by distance.” (See Note 2 below.) For example, if you exerted a force on a chair to push it across the floor, you have done “work” in a physics sense. The “available energy” came from you; you had the energy potential stored in you to move the chair in a conversion to kinetic energy. Of course, the wind could also move a chair. If we find a lawn chair had moved in the night, we would have no way of conclusively determining if the potential energy to move it was supplied by an intelligent being or the wind. In the absence of a witness or other clues, both causes are plausible.

Thus, available energy is energy having the potential to be converted to kinetic energy, the energy of matter in motion to do work. A water wheel (as on old mill houses) is driven by the force exerted by water on the water wheel, converting its potential energy to kinetic energy as it falls and applies a force through a distance. Before the water wheel the water possessed a certain potential energy available that was converted to kinetic energy to do the “work” of turning the wheel. After falling, the water no longer had the same potential energy with respect to the water-water wheel system. Thus, within the constraints of the system (and assuming the water fell to a flat, level surface), the water is at its lowest available energy state, constrained by the ground so that it can do no more work. If the water had anywhere else to flow or fall, it could lose additional “potential,” which could likewise be directed as work if harnessed.

The concept of available energy, especially “potential energy,” has been well developed in science, and is expressed by the laws of thermodynamics. There are two important laws of thermodynamics, aptly named the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. The Second Law of Thermodynamics (the “Second Law”) in particular bears on evolution in a way that must be understood, given that on its face it flatly contradicts the ideas of evolution.

Water wheels rely on a difference in water level to create the energy “potential” necessary to do work. But falling water is not the only form of potential energy available for work. Differences in temperature create a potential for heat engines, such as the automobile engine. Electrical potential differences in batteries represent available energy, as do chemical potential differences in certain chemical formulations. In short, in whatever form energy exists, work can be obtained only if the energy is present in a state of greater intensity in one portion of the system and lesser intensity in another portion.

What do work and energy concepts have to do with evolution? Simply moving chairs across a floor or water wheels going around may be interesting in terms of understanding energy in nature. But how should we think about the work required to do more than merely exert force in a system of changing matter?

How do we think about “work” in the context of constructing a stone bridge or arranging large stones on a beach to spell “help”? Is not something more than “available energy” required to explain the movement of the stones? Is there not something more than mere energy expenditure required to explain how the stones changed over time to their ordered arrangement from the relative disorder of loose stones? Work was, indeed, performed to construct the bridge or arrange the letters on the beach, but simply “moving stones through a distance” does not explain their specific ordered arrangement for a purpose. Something more than mere work is required.

In a real sense, the idea of an energy “potential” is the idea of energy being able to go “downhill” to be useful. As long as energy can still go downhill, more work can “potentially” be extracted. Thus, more water wheels can be placed downstream from the first, each one driving more mill stones. Heat can be extracted and used to run a heat engine, batteries can run radios, and chemical reactions can drive to final products. But at some point, the river can no longer run downhill, the temperature differences disappear, the electrical charges equalize, and the chemical reactants are spent. At that point there is no more “available energy” within the “constraints of the system.”

Keeping in mind the example of the water wheel, it is easy to see that you can never expect the water wheel to turn faster than the water is falling. Nor can you get the wheel to turn if the forces of friction are too great for the force of the water to overcome. In general, it is clear that one cannot extract from a system more energy than the total energy present in the first place. This is, in fact, is the essence of the First Law of Thermodynamics (the First Law).iii

In addition to the First Law, the Second Law states that it’s impossible to extract more work (i.e., useful, directed energy) from a system than the quantity of available energy will permit. The idea here is that you “can’t get something for nothing” or, “you can’t get more than you started with.” The practical implications of the First and Second Laws are that no matter how the energy is supplied, for any system the amount of unavailable energy always increases with time. We might say that the unavailable energy in any system can remain unchanged under ideal conditions, but always increases with time under actual conditions.

The term “entropy” was invented to serve as a measure of the unavailability of energy. Therefore, as Asimov states:

We can say then that the entropy of a system can remain unchanged under ideal conditions, but always increases with time under actual conditions. And this, too, is an expression of the second law of thermodynamics. Isaac Asimov, Understanding Physics, 3 Volumes in 1 (New York: Barnes & Noble Books, 1993), p 231.

The Second Law and entropy are each expressed in various ways depending on the particular discipline of science to which they are applied. But in any context, entropy is in essence a measure of disorder, or the “evenness” of energy distribution. For example, when an electrical battery discharges, its electrical energy is more and more evenly distributed over its substance and over the material involved in the electrical flow of current. The increasing evenness with which energy is spread out is one manifestation of increasing disorder. This “evenness” is an invariable result of the Second Law and its effects are universal to all aspects of nature. As Asimov states:

For this reason, when we shuffle a neatly stacked deck of cards into random order, we can speak of an increase in entropy. And, in general, all spontaneous processes do indeed seem (in line with the second law of thermodynamics) to bring about an increase of disorder. Unless a special effort is made to reverse the order of things (increasing our own entropy), neat rooms will tend to become messed up, shining objects will tend to become dirty, things remembered will tend to become forgotten, and so on. Ibid., p. 239.

It’s the “special effort” referred to by Asimov that is the problem for Darwinists. As mentioned previously, the universality of the Second Law is unquestioned; it is sometimes referred to as the basis for our perception of time itself. The Second Law says that in the absence of directed energy (the “special effort” Asimov referred to), natural laws and physical constraints in the system will always result in a “winding down”; systems always go from a relatively ordered to a relatively more disordered state; from high energy to low energy; from hot to cold; from organized to disorganized.

On its face, therefore, the Second Law stands diametrically opposed to any theory, including biological evolution, which requires matter to go spontaneously from a simple, random form to a more complex, specified form. In essence, to do so is to say there is a natural system that requires water to run uphill.

The stock reply from virtually all Darwinists to such an objection is that the Second Law applies only to closed systems. (See, Note 3 below.) In our case, Darwinists say, the Second Law’s tendency to prevent the incredible ordering necessary for evolution is circumvented by including the sun in our local earth system.

As mentioned, the Second Law is dismissed flippantly and casually by evolutionists. For example, in Ernst Mayr’s 318-page book What Evolution Is, fully one paragraph of seven lines is employed on page 8 to assure us:

[T]here is no conflict, because the law of entropy is valid only for closed systems, whereas the evolution of a species of organisms takes place in an open system in which organisms can reduce entropy at the expense of the environment and the sun supplies a continuing input of energy. Mayr, What Evolution Is, p. 8. The Second Law, or thermodynamics in general, is not even mentioned in the index to Mayr’s book. The only other mention of “entropy” is in the glossary in which it is evident that Mayr apparently does not even understand the concept. Entropy is defined by Mayr as “The degradation of matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity. Entropy can be reached only in a closed system” (Ibid., p. 285). The first sentence is not a definition of entropy, but it is at least an acceptable description of the effects of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and can pass for a description of “entropy” for the lay reader. However, the second sentence is simply wrong. Entropy is a measure of something, like other measures such as temperature, weight, or distance. The second sentence is analogous to saying “Temperature can be reached only in a closed system.” Mistakes are excusable, but such cursory treatment of a topic otherwise given short shrift by someone of Mayr’s stature is difficult to understand.

The idea referred to by Mayr, which is the standard refutation invariably flashed like a fake ID to get past all but those who actually care, is that the Second Law applies only to systems closed to external sources of energy input, and our earth system has unlimited energy input from the sun. Therefore, because the earth is not a closed system, the sun can supply energy for local entropy reduction on earth at the expense of an increase in entropy elsewhere. Other Darwinists agree. For example, with respect to the Second Law and closed systems Richard Dawkins refers with typical condescension to:

[A]n irony in the claim, made by lay opponents of evolution, that the theory of evolution violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics … within any closed system. Dawkins, A Devil’s Chaplain, p. 84. Elsewhere Dawkins refers to arguments that evolution violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics as “ignorant nonsense” (Dawkins, Blind Watchmaker, p. 94).

In typical “up is down” thinking, Dawkins explains:

If anything appeared to violate the law (nothing really does), it would be the facts, not any particular explanation of those facts! The Darwinian explanation is the only viable explanation we have for those facts that shows us how they could have come into being without violating the laws of physics. Ibid. Dawkins here includes a footnote that the facts referred to are “About life’s functional complexity or high ‘information content.’”

Without question the facts appear to violate the Second Law—that is the reason for the inquiry in the first place. We are seeking to understand how any natural process could make water go uphill, so to speak, in the way Darwinism requires. To simply presume as a fact that Darwinism is the only viable explanation for these facts is a bald, question-begging assertion—putting forth as a conclusion what is the question under consideration.

Other Darwinists inadvertently prove themselves wrong while pretending to give a scientific answer to the question. For example, Dr. Tim M. Berra addressed “Some Creationist Claims” including the claim that “evolution violates the second law of thermodynamics” in his book Evolution and the Myth of Creationism he answers:

These statements conveniently ignore the fact that you can get order out of disorder if you add energy. For example, an unassembled bicycle that arrives at your house in a shopping carton is in a state of disorder. You supply the energy of your muscles (which you get from food that came ultimately from sunlight) to assemble the bike. You have got order from disorder by supplying energy. The Sun is the source of energy input to the Earth’s living systems and allows them to evolve. Tim M. Berra, Evolution and the Myth of Creationism (Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1990), p. 126.

Berra’s error is easy to see it. Obviously, it is not only energy that is supplied to the bicycle parts; a large dose of intelligent direction is also necessarily present. If Berra wants to use the bicycle analogy, he must explain how raw, undirected energy might combine with chance processes to do anything but cause the bicycle parts to decay, rust, or otherwise deteriorate. As he has set up his illustration, Berra has succeeded in proving that an intelligent being is necessary to direct energy (even if all the parts are in existence, and the energy ultimately comes from the sun). Like Berra’s bicycle, living organisms also need a “maker” otherwise the component parts would simply bask in the sun until they break down into even greater and greater disorder.

For a serious evolutionist perspective on the difficulties of reconciling evolution with the Second Law, the reader should consider Paul Davies’ treatment in The Fifth Miracle. Subtitled The Search for the Origin and Meaning of Life, Davies’ book treats this critical topic with the attention it deserves. In Chapter 2, entitled “Against the Tide” Davies notes that, rather than simply being ignorant nonsense among the “lay opponents of evolution,” serious evolutionary thinkers see problems with evolution in light of the Second Law:

Some eminent scientists have been deeply mystified by this contradiction [i.e., natural examples of an increase in order]. The German physicist Hermann von Helmholtz, himself one of the founders of the science of thermodynamics, was one of the first to suggest that life somehow circumvents the second law. … Eddington likewise perceived a clash between Darwinian evolution and thermodynamics, and suggested either that the former be abandoned or that an “anti-evolution principle” be set alongside it. … Even Schrödinger had his doubts. In his book What Is Life he examined the relationship between order and disorder in conventional thermodynamics and contrasted it with life’s hereditary principle of more order from order. Paul Davies, The Fifth Miracle, The Search for the Origin of Life (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1999), p. 52.

To be clear, Davies is an unequivocal evolutionist, and to the question “Is there a problem with the second law of thermodynamics when it comes to biological evolution?” he answers forthrightly, “No, there isn’t.” (Ibid.)

Unfortunately, Davies’ justification for this conclusion falls short of being persuasive. Discarding the standard-issue fake ID, Davies has a custom-made ID with a more realistic background that requires a little closer inspection. He begins by stating that the standard “the second law applies only to closed systems,” argument and gives the example of a refrigerator, which decreases entropy inside at the expense of an increase in entropy outside. (Ibid., p. 53.) This, of course, is a correct characterization of the Second Law, and when applied, as Davies does, to existing organisms it explains how they can exhibit entropy-decreasing characteristics because they are designed to do so.

For example, Davies’ explanation accounts for how things designed to direct energy, like refrigerators and rhododendrons, can process raw energy into increased order in entropy-decreasing processes such as refrigeration or photosynthesis. Unfortunately, this line of thought misses the point of explaining how the photosynthesis process, much less the rhododendron itself, got there in the first place—and that’s what Darwinism must account for.

Nevertheless, Davies does make an honest attempt to apply the entropic principle to biological evolution, rather than deny its applicability:

The appearance of new species marks an increase in order, but Darwin’s theory identifies the price that is paid to achieve this. To evolve a new species requires many mutations, the vast majority of which are harmful and get eliminated by the sieve of natural selection. … The carnage of natural selection amounts to a huge increase in entropy, which more than compensates for the gain represented by the successful mutant.” Ibid., pp. 53-54.

This argument is almost persuasive. However, it fails by falling short of explaining how the ordering of specified complexity came to be in the lucky mutant. The “carnage of natural selection” is nothing more than the death of already existing (if not unlucky) complex living things. But the death of the unlucky does not explain the creation of the lucky—the information rich, complex, entropy-decreasing order necessary for Darwinian survival.

Davies’ line of reasoning is a specific instance of the general argument that the Second Law permits a local decrease in entropy as long as there is an offsetting increase in entropy somewhere else in the system. This is accurate, but equally accurate and required by the Second Law is that a decrease (local or otherwise) in entropy comes about only in the presence of some ordering force or principle. That is, just as photosynthesis locally decreases entropy due to the programmed instructions in the plant, an entropy-decreased organism must have some ordering principle to account for local decreases in entropy. Like trying to claim water can locally run uphill if there are enough offsetting downhill runs, such a claim requires an explanation of how the uphill run happens. Including the sun in the system does not suffice.

Nevertheless, Davies’ in-depth attempt is appreciated as a good-faith effort to reconcile the Second Law with evolution, rather than all but ignore the inquiry as if it was just a misunderstanding among “lay opponents of evolution.” Davies clearly comprehends the problems of explaining evolution in the face of the Second Law, and his various theories on the subject, particularly with respect to the origin of life, are worth considering. And while his attempts at “reconciliation” strike an anti-evolutionist as contrived and somewhat far-fetched, at least he’s making an honest attempt instead of denying the conflict.

One of Davies most important contributions to the inquiry of the Second Law is his acknowledgment of the role information plays in living organisms. Davies is particularly interested in finding an explanation for the source of information as it relates to the origin of life in the first place, but his comments and insights are equally applicable to the Darwinian process of evolution, that must (if it is to be science-based) explain increasing, directional, specified complexity. Specifically, the contribution Davies makes to the inquiry is recognizing that for origin of life, we need to “explain, not the origin of material stuff, but the origin of information.” (Ibid., p. 62.) Specifically, he realizes:

We seem to be faced with a disturbing contradiction. The second law forbids the total information content of the universe from going up as it evolves, yet, from what we can tell about the early universe, it contained very little information. So where has the information present in the universe today come from? Another way of expressing the problem is in terms of entropy. If the universe started out close to thermodynamic equilibrium, or maximum entropy, how has it reached its present state of disequilibrium, given that the second law forbids the total entropy to go down? Ibid., p. 63.

The fact that Davies recognizes the problem in terms of the universe (i.e., the ultimate “system” of interest) is noteworthy. Equally notable is the fact that he also recognizes that simply attributing the energy of the sun to our “earth system” as an explanation for an information-building process falls short of being an explanation—scientific or otherwise. He clearly admits, for example, that protein formation from amino acids requires an “uphill process” that “heads in the wrong direction, thermodynamically speaking.” (Ibid., p. 89.) And it is not simply for lack of energy input into the system that such a process is in the “wrong direction.” As Davies notes:

To be sure, there would have been no lack of available energy sources on the early Earth to provide the work needed to forge the peptide bonds, but just throwing energy at the problem is no solution. The same energy sources that generate organic molecules also serve to destroy them. To work constructively, the energy has to be targeted at the specific reaction required. Uncontrolled energy input, such as simple heating, is far more likely to prove destructive than constructive. Ibid., p. 91.

Again, not to misrepresent Davies, he is discussing origin of life in the first place, not Darwinian descent with modification. However, the same considerations come into play with the Darwinian simple-to-specified-complex origin of species. The Darwinian process requires massive amounts of entropy-reducing gains in specified complex information to be generated naturally (albeit over long periods of time, but the Second Law is not any less applicable over long periods of time).xxxii Simply attributing such entropy-defying requirements to “energy from the sun,” as Dawkins and Berra do, suffers from the same defects as Davies’ origin of life explanations would if he also took such a lazy, circumspect route.

To reiterate, simply “throwing energy” from the sun at the problem of the Second Law’s applicability to evolution is not a solution—natural laws based on physical laws of necessity are incapable of converting raw energy into information-rich, complex, specified structures. Simply invoking the sun into the earth’s system as a cure-all for evolutionary complexity ignores the fact that raw, undirected energy is not known to be capable in itself, i.e., in the absence of a directing law or process (or person, such as Berra’s bicycle maker), of providing order out of disorder, much less specified order, and further much less specified complexity. As mentioned previously, and confirmed by Davies, the undirected energy of the sun has the opposite effect—in the absence of an imposed ordering principle (like photosynthesis), the sun’s radiation tends to break down matter into less ordered states.

The British astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington regarded the Second Law as occupying the supreme position among the laws of nature. He once wrote:

[I]f your theory is found to be against the second law of thermodynamics I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation. Ibid., p. 51, quoting A. S. Eddington, The Nature of the Physical World (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1928), p. 74.

To this sentiment Darwinists have yet to answer. That is, Darwinists have yet to propose any natural law, process, or mechanism that can “get something for nothing” as evolution requires. Specifically, what Darwinists have yet to explain is the origin of the information-rich, specified complexity exhibited by living organisms. Appealing to the sun to explain Second-Law-defying phenomena is like assuring us that somewhere a water wheel is pushing water uphill on its own simply because the sun is shining brightly.

With rare exceptions humility is not a selected trait among leading Darwinists. Nevertheless, Eddington is correct; and, like water running downhill against an earthen dam, the unyielding reality of the Second Law will continue to build up against the leaky dike of Darwinism. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before Darwinism is washed away by a flood of inviolable truth.

1 It is true that natural processes can produce simple ordered structures; therefore, the lowest energy state can be ordered by physical constraints such as molecular attraction or barriers to further potential energy loss. Thus, natural laws and physical constraints on a system can produce well-known “anti-entropic” simple order, such as the order in a crystal structure. The geometrical arrangement of a crystal lattice is determined predominantly by the interatomic forces operating. Likewise, marbles dropped on a flat, level surface come to rest in an “ordered” manner because all come to rest in the same plane. However, such “ordering” is simply a result of natural laws and physical constraints and is not to be confused with the increased anti-entropic specified complexity required by evolution.

In this video I show the error in scientific thinking of a very well informed evolutionist that kept him from seeing the truth about evolution. If your good friend wrote a novel with you as a character, how would he describe you? A talented author would develop a picture in words describing your outwardly visible looks, your inwardly evident attributes, and possibly some relevant quirks and idiosyncrasies. Your family history and national origin, as well as your occupation and hobbies, might help to color a full description. But would the author’s characterization of you provide indications that you are “in Christ?”

If you are a Christian, upon believing the truth of the Gospel message, a miracle happened: Your identity immediately changed. By God’s grace alone, your fundamental identity changed from that characterized by the death of sin to that of new life “in Christ.” Being alive “in Christ” becomes the most meaningful and consequential component of any Christian’s being, and it should be evident to others. Everything else pales in comparative eternal significance.

But who is Christ? Is Jesus the miraculously incarnate God-man, God the Son sent from heaven to earth as Emmanual—God with us—born of a woman? Or is Jesus merely an evolved animal in a long chain of evolved animals, all of whom trace their meaningless ancestry back to a first, primitive, chance life form on earth? To borrow a phrase, was Jesus a liar, a lunatic, or Lord?

When framed in terms of the most eternally consequential aspect of being human, determining Jesus’ identity becomes more than a mere academic exercise. His identity makes or breaks our hope on earth and in eternity. If Jesus arrived on earth as nothing more than evolved matter flung out from the Big Bang, the Gospel is a farce, God is a fiction, and humanity lives a purposeless, hopeless existence.

If evolutionary theory’s materialistic foundation is reality, then Christians have been duped by a liar or a lunatic. Because between “liar, lunatic, or Lord,” Lord is impossible; no conglomeration of mere atoms can make a “Lord,” and the very notion is foreign to a materialistic reality. In a universe of bare matter in motion, there is no God, no supernatural, no purpose, and no meaning. In such a universe, Jesus evolved like every other animal. His body consisted of nothing more than the temporary chance location of some bits of matter that burst forth long ago in the Big Bang.

We find that if Christianity—and our identity in Christ—has any meaning, the question of Jesus’ nature demands far more consideration than that allowed by scientists beholden to naturalistic, materialistic philosophy. When scientists practice naturalism, the idea that natural processes alone must explain the existence and nature of Jesus, they impose materialism’s philosophical assumptions on the question. And the assumptions of materialistic science driven by philosophical naturalism answer the question before it is asked: Jesus could not be who He claimed to be.

But what if materialism’s demand for naturalistic explanations rests on wrong assumptions? Can we legitimately apply a different presupposition—that a supernatural creative God exists—to reasonably understand Jesus’—and our—existence differently? And does this different presupposition permit the scientific evidence we see around us to lead naturally to different explanations for human identity as well as Jesus’ identity?

The answer to the last two questions is a resounding yes, and yes. By freeing our minds from the assumption-driven constraint of philosophical naturalism in science, we find we can freely use our minds, reason, and logical thinking to understand the evidence on earth differently. And when viewed without self-imposed limitations, this evidence clearly points to a scientific basis for embracing the Bible’s triune God as creator. And evidence of our creation by God in His image also fulfills a theologically necessary condition, without which we lose the gospel. Without creation by God first, there is no sin, no need for redemption, and no need for the necessary nature of Jesus as the fully God and fully human savior.

The effective hope of Christians’ identity in Christ rests on recognizing that rightly answering the question of our existence is far more than a scientific endeavor. A right view of our creation becomes a theological necessity for Christians. In short, if evolutionary theory is true, the Bible’s account of our creation in God’s image is not true: No Adam ever existed, sin is a human construct, and redemption becomes a meaningless abstraction. And Jesus? Well, he simply evolved as another “mud man” without any divine breath of life. Life itself reduces to a mere difference in category among all of nature’s meaningless mass of molecules.

For the sake of fully living in our true identity, it’s time to take back the creation narrative. Only by recognizing that science supports the Genesis account of creation as true history can we fully live “in Christ” as our living Lord and savior. Because the Bible’s account of creation not only aligns with modern science, it describes God’s gracious redemptive plan leading to life, and life more abundantly, in Christ.

Evolutionists, I want to hear from you!

Last month I changed my mind based on feedback from an informed evolutionist, and I remain open to my mind being changed again.

Background: At Creation Reformation we have for years defended a statement that, if true, kills evolutionary theory as an explanation for all current living things. We call it The Natural Selection Paradox, and it formerly read: “Natural selection played no role in the evolution of any current living thing.”

In a video entitled Dropping the Bomb on Evolution I defended the former version of The Natural Selection Paradox and invited evolutionists to tell me how I am wrong. And guess what? After three years of trying by many evolutionists, finally an informed evolutionist successfully showed me that, as worded, The Natural Selection Paradox was not a true statement!

Based on our fascinating exchange, explained here, I reworked The Natural Selection Paradox. Again, if true as reworded, it completely destroys the theory of evolution by natural selection as an explanation for all current living things.

Here is the new version: “Despite natural selection’s role in nature, every current species evolved from a first life form SOLELY by cumulative RANDOM evolutionary change.”

In view of this new version I re-produced the video, Dropping the Bomb on Evolution.

If evolution is the true explanation for human existence, then Easter is a farce.

How unscientific by modern sensibilities is it to believe that a human being, once dead for three days, became alive again?

And how utterly scientifically embarassing is the notion that this man was raised from the dead by his invisible father, whom the man claimed was the transcendent creator God of the universe?

And can we even dare in the 21st century to entertain the idea that this man was who he claimed to be: God himself, Emmanuel, a God-man, if you will?

And what about the claim of his biographers that this man can trace his lineage back to Adam, of all people?

What are we to make of such claims, especially among those who actually believe the claims are true, specifically about a man named Jesus?

Alternatively, what about those who choose to believe by faith that there is no God? For such people, if Jesus was a real person he must have been a liar or a lunatic (and, by extension, his followers must be liars or at least lunatic-ish).

Modern sensibilities—if not modern science—demand only one logical outcome: we must conclude that Jesus was a lunatic.

Why?

Because modern science has thrown its lot in with those who choose to believe by faith that there is no God. At least there is no God who created human beings; human beings are the result of purely natural processes that never had us in mind. And for those true believers, evolution is the true creation story for human beings because it must be, because it is the only believable creation story for human beings.

And, if those who choose by faith that believe there is no God have chosen correctly, then all the claims of Jesus are not only false, they are nonsensical.

Liars and lunatics abound.

If evolution is true, there is no mechanism in nature to bring back to life that which is 3-days dead.

If evolution is true, Jesus was not "Emmanu-el, God with us." At best he appeared on earth as an evolved human, merely emmanu-is, man with us. Or more properly in evolutionary categories, Jesus arose as emmanu-behemah, beast with us. In evolutionary terms, it remains impossible for the fullness of a non-human (and likely non-existent) deity to dwell in any earthly body.

Further, if evolution is true, Jesus' lineage does not go back to Adam; a true Adam never existed. According to evolution, Jesus' lineage, like yours and mine, goes back to a sea sponge in the animal line (yes, look it up), and even further back to something like a bacterium as a first life form.

Finally, if evolution is true, Jesus was not risen, he remains dead. And Easter is a farce.

It seems that the popular notion that "evolution and religion can co-exist" is not true for all religions. The notion is definitely not true for a religion that claims a saviour who was a God-man came to earth, born in the lineage of the "first Adam" and who himself was called the "second Adam" in his cosmic redemptive work, and who was raised from the dead on behalf of all God's created image-bearers to save them from death and destruction caused by the sin of the first Adam's fall.

There is a lot in that last sentence; it may not even be gramatically sound. But what it means is that Easter and Evolution are incompatible; they cannot co-exist. One must be a lie proclaimed by liars and possibly lunatics, whether knowingly or not.

What are we to do?

What if the Bible did not exist?

Imagine for a moment that the Bible did not exist. No Old Testament, no New Testament, and no religion too. Picture a world without the Bible's account of creation, and, of course, without its creator God. What might origins science look like in a Bible-less world?

With no metaphysical apparitions of a holy Creator God to drive men to imaginations of multiverse pumpkin patches and panspermian storks, might science adhere to age-old principles and permit the logical inference that what looks created for a purpose might truly be created for a purpose? If not, why not?

Before dismissing the thought, consider: it's a testable and tested proposition. Historically many with no knowledge of the Bible or its God reasonably concluded the necessity of a non-intuitive but logically necessary creator of all we see around us.

Whether Plato's "demiurge" of divine wisdom as the benevolent “maker and father” of the universe, or Aristotle's "prime mover" as an eternal being of thought, Bible-less super-thinkers of old followed logic to its rational and logical beginning: a scientifically necessary Logos.

A Logos—a rational wisdom manifest in creation—of some kind appears simply inescapable to any right thinking on the topic of origins. According to early philosphers, a rational something or someone must be responsible for the evident structure and ordered composition of the universe.

Today Plato and Aristotle might cheer for modern science that confirms their ancient science with elegant evidence driving reasonable inferences of a rational creator of the universe. What else is rational in view of the precisely specified and massively complex coded building instructions in every living thing? In fact, Plato and Aristotle might agree that now all men are without excuse for not readily assuming a creator with a divine nature. They may even affirm that what has been made compels belief in the invisible attributes of the creative God they could only hypothesize!

But, alas, they could not cheer loudly in the respectable halls of science today. Both Plato and Aristotle would risk being banned from biology class, being lectured in the lab, enduring teaching without tenure, and receiving the insult of all insults: being belittled as creationists. And creationists they were, if "creationist" simply means anyone who believes that an intelligent Logos is somehow and in some way the cause of our universe and life on earth.

How did we reach a place in science where no one is free to scientifically consider a Logos of creation in any form?

The answer is two-fold. First, the complete surrender of institutional science organizations to scientific materialism all but smothers true free inquiry from the likes of Aristotle. Adopting scientific materialism in the form of methodological naturalism drives out free-thinking scientists and permits only thought-constrained theories of origins.

Consider the modern scientific conundrum: how to marshal a purely materialistic (that is, natural, mindless, purposeless, and unguided) causal explanation for the origin of life that exhibits the hallmarks of being created (supernaturally, mindfully, purposefully, and intelligently) by a creator. Modern attempts to do so by intellectually encumbered materialists make the Biblical Logos of creation seem rational in comparison.

Take "multiverse" theory, for example, as advanced by leading evolutionary biologists like Eugene Koonin. Because by every account, whether by materialist or creationist, chance assembly of a code-specified, replicating life form by physics and chemistry alone is impossible, clever types constrained by scientific materialism have landed on a possible solution: multiverses.

Evidently, we are told, life from non-life is inevitable (yes, inevitable) if only we imagine an infinitely expanding multi-verse consisting of an infinite number of universes. Materialists welcome the evidence-starved and untestable musings of an infinity of eternal, unseen (and undetectable) universes as "science." Why? Because thoughts of limitless eternal mindless matter in motion, like a great metaphysical salve, temporarily soothes the mind, leaving for another day the stubborn necessity of an eternal logos, a sentient creator of not only life, but matter itself.

Multiverse theory appears almost scientifically reasonable relative to the wishful theory of panspermia. Panspermia stands as another "scientific" theory held by serious materialists despite the lack of compelling evidence. Leading scientists such as Francis Crick of DNA discovery fame entertain serious thoughts that “life” on earth first appeared when DNA-based organisms randomly hit earth’s surface after traveling through space from another planet or some other far away place in our universe.

Recognizing that the theory of extraterrestrial living organisms reaching earth from another planet, star, or meteorite by chance is "unlikely” Francis Crick set about fixing that problem. Crick proposed the more creative theory of Directed Panspermia. Not to be confused with the earlier unlikely version, Crick proposed Directed Panspermia as "the theory that organisms were deliberately transmitted to the earth [on spaceships] by intelligent beings on another planet."

Let's get serious. Both multiverse conjecture and panspermia speculation represent in-the-box thinking for those self-imprisoned inside the dark box of materialism. But all such theories only push out or back (while highlighting the need for) that solid rock of immutable truth: the out-of-the-box, non-materialistic causa sui of ours or any universe.

Why can we not, as did the pagan Greek Heraclitus, who first applied the term logos five hundred years before Christ, simply posit a rational intelligence behind creation? Why must we be resigned to endure the just-so stories of modern materialistic origins science? Are they not patently absurd?

Yes. Evolutionary geneticist Richard Lewontin refreshingly admitted the obvious when he described materialistic "unsubstantiated just-so stories" and other "constructs" as “patent absurdity." According to Lewontin, he and like-minded others hold to philosophically driven absurdities because they hold "a prior commitment, a commitment to [the philosophy of] materialism."

Such admissions are helpful, but do not reach the real reason why today's enforcers in origins science impose patent absurdity upon us all. After all, most evolutionists are not full-fledged materialists. Most of the public is nowhere near being any kind of materialist. So why must we all suffer the truth-suppressing curse of absolute materialism under the guise of modern science?

Lewontin continued his revealing admission, surprising only for its frankness, as he provided the second—and most important—of the two reasons people are not free to identify as creationists by a broad definition. Voicing a sentiment parroted incessantly on this subject Lewontin continued: "Moreover, that [philosophy of] materialism [that drives patent absurdity] is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door."

Eureka!

Materialist speculations are enforced against non-materialistic explanations not because they might be true—but to keep God out. It's not the Bible's creation story that's the problem; it's the Bible's creator. After all, Genesis-account creationism is no stranger, or less supported, or less probable, or less believable than Koonin's unseen, eternal multiverse or Crick's deliberative spaceship launchers.

The problem with Genesis-account creationism is not that it is absurd to non-believers, but that the theory comes with a Divine Foot, and not just any Divine Foot, but that foot directly connected to that Divine Being. Eliminate that Divine Being from consideration, and there is absolutely no reason not to consider the Logos hypothesis: that what looks created by a creator is created by a creator.

Not convinced? Try this at home: Ask anyone you know who opposes any form of creationism why they reject the Logos/creator hypothesis. The answer you receive will invariably involve one or more of the words, "God" or "Bible" or "Genesis" or “superstition” or "10,000 years" or "six days" or "religion" or "faith" or “intolerant” or “evil” or “goat-herders” or “incest” or “talking snakes” or the like. Then ask your friend to imagine there is no Bible—imagine that the Bible describing its creator God never existed and does not exist now—and ask the question again. And wait.

The silence you will hear, like a great resounding trumpet of truth, might set a captive free.

Because the dirty big secret of the materialists who rule and make rules in origins science today is not merely their collective commitment to scientific materialism. Behind the rule stands the reason for demanding absolute commitment from everyone: a great fear of the Divine Foot in the door.

Whose foot might that be? And how does Lewontin or any God-fearing materialist hiding behind the label of "atheist" have any knowledge of any divine feet at all?

In a better world argument over Divine Feet would follow, not prevent, a discussion of divine footprints. But the Bible has spoiled all that. Because the only being known to be causa sui, the great I AM, the Logos capable of creating footprints ex-nihilo, is also revealed in the Bible as a living God with a claim on life and conscience. And the specter of that Divine Foot affords no safe haven for boxed-in theophobes haunted by the blinding light shining unstoppably underneath the mind-locked door of their materialistic box.

Inside materialism’s self-constructed God-free box it's scientific to believe in eternal, unseen and undetectable infinite multiverses. It's respectable to believe in intelligent beings from another planet using spaceships to shoot life to earth. It’s even tolerable to believe in non-creative and otherwise uninteresting toy gods of other religions.

Why?

Because regardless of how silly, evidence-lacking, unbelievable, and otherwise absurd a materialistic theory of origins appears, it gets great respect because it avoids that Divine Foot in the door.

Without the fear of that Divine Foot in the door shutting down more rational avenues of curiosity we might all be creationists.

Why?

Because, well . . . why not?

In my last post I shared the reasons for a significant shift in how Creation Reformation will approach its critique of evolution going forward.

Specifically, in my last post entitled Natural Selection: A Scarecrow in a Cucumber Patch, I detailed how an informed evolutionist showed me that the previous version of The Natural Selection Paradox was, in fact, not fully accurate!

After some soul-searching and deep thinking, I found with great excitement that the intent of The Natural Selection Paradox—to destroy evolution by natural selection as an explanation for current species—could be salvaged. I’m currently crafting a newer version of The Natural Selection Paradox from several alternatives. Here is the current version, which holds true for the reasons detailed below!

To test newer versions, I asked Grok if some proposed statements of The Natural Selection Paradox are true or not. Grok is Elon Musk’s AI chatbot developed by xAI. Grok’s answers amaze me. Not only does Grok answer comprehensively, but Grok answers match precisely those of an honest evolutionist, as I’ll explain below.

Here is the first query with a version of The Natural Selection Paradox I submitted to Grok for analysis:

Is this a true statement: “Every current species descended from a first living organism in an unbroken line of ancestry, with each change from parent to offspring produced solely by random evolutionary change.”

Grok’s complete answer with reasoning can found below, but note Grok’s correct answer in conclusion (bold emphasis added):

Why?

Because, as this version of The Natural Selection Paradox makes clear, and Grok confirms, the sole evolutionary mechanism explaining the only evolutionary change of interest (heritable change in offspring to produce new phenotypes in nature) is produced randomly.

Random! Random change alone explains every evolutionary change that cumulatively produced all current species from a first living life form.

Once The Natural Selection Paradox is understood as a paradoxically true statement, evolution by natural selection becomes a dead letter. Rather than life as a product of “evolution by natural selection,” the theory must be called “evolution despite natural selection,” or “evolution by random genetic change alone.”

Thus, I am more confident than ever that The Natural Selection Paradox is true, and its message is lethal to the theory of evolution. There is simply no scientific reason to embrace the idea that every current species arrived from a first life form solely via a process of cumulative, random, changes.

But note something I find continually fascinating. Grok, like real-life evolutionists cannot resist wedging natural selection into the discussion, despite natural selection being completely irrelevant to the statement of The Natural Selection Paradox! Our friend “Tom” in our last post did the same thing, to an almost annoying degree!

“Tom” and Grok each agree that The Natural Selection Paradox is true. But neither Tom nor Grok can admit that without simultaneously imagining that natural selection nevertheless remains necessary to render the theory of evolution relevant!

Grok notes that “Each change from parent to offspring is produced solely by random evolutionary processes like mutations and recombination, though natural selection plays a crucial role in determining which changes persist.” This sentence is almost identical, and is identical in meaning, to the constant refrain from “Tom” in my last post! Grok amazingly thinks exactly like a real evolutionist!

But who cares what “changes persist”?? Changes “persisting” is not surprising, controversial, or particularly interesting. The only interesting aspect of evolutionary theory is how changes to make new phenotypes happen in the first place!

To test the idea that, whatever the “crucial role” played by natural selection entails, it does not change the truth of the Natural Selection Paradox, we asked the following of Grok. It’s the same query, but explicitly adds the qualifier, “Despite natural selection operating in nature…”:

Is this a true statement: “Despite natural selection operating in nature, every current species descended from a first living organism in an unbroken line of ancestry, with each change from parent to offspring produced solely by random evolutionary change."

I won’t repeat Grok’s entire response, as it is virtually the same as that copied below, but here is Grok’s answer (bold emphasis added):
